"My name's Jason Ross. And in the spring of two thousand nine I was a writer at the daily show with John Stewart and we had a big problem because we we had to make comedy about the financial crisis and that was hard much harder than writing jokes about something horrible like the Iraq war. Everybody understands war for nobody understood the financial crisis. It didn't help that we couldn't even trust the experts because they're the ones who got us into this in two thousand nine. Nobody had any credibility ability. The media didn't have credibility because they let it happen under their watch. Wall Street didn't have credibility they created it. Washington was creating something called a money bazooka so they didn't and have any credibility with us so we were kind of in a bind with some of these guests because we didn't trust them one hundred percent but we also didn't have the expertise to challenge them with much credibility so we had some limited options and it was always a lot of work but on April fifteenth. Two thousand nine. We had a guest coming on. Who would really give the goods? I thought what am I doing here. This is a really bad idea from the New York Times. I'm Michael Borrow. This is the daily hard three in our series on pivotal moments in the lives of the top four Democratic candidates for President Today Elizabeth Warren It's Friday December thirteenth Senator Erica we. Where do you want me right there? Yeah there's your hot water got so thank you for making time for us. I'm delighted to be here. Let's just jump in my colleague Andrew. Ross Sorkin so financial columnist at the time WHO's written a lot about your career told me about what feels like a turning point moment for you back in April of two thousand nine so that's where I want to start this conversation. Listen it's the height of the financial crisis and you get a call from the daily show with Jon Stewart. What do you remember thinking when you got that call really really I mean here I am doing this really wonky? Work as the financial markets Are In free fall. The question every day is whether the banks can survive. Millions of families are facing foreclosure. People have lost their jobs. Pension funds have gone down. And I have this little panel the Congressional Oversight Panel that what is supposed to bring some accountability to the system and I'm fighting the Treasury Department every day the Federal Reserve every day. And just try to talk about what's happening and frankly since there's no official legal power for that little oversight panel handle to try to get more people engaged so we can put some pressure on them to get some accountability in. What's going on list taxpayer? Money and with these big banks and with the bailout following the crash this seven hundred billion dollars that Congress had authorized authorized and when John Stewart called. I thought wow I could talk to a whole lot of people who otherwise otherwise might not be watching this and be able to talk about what's going on and start to put it in some context because it's not only think about where it is at that moment it's about the crash and arresting the free fall and trying to save the economy but it's also about understanding what went wrong so we do the right thing next in terms of how we changed the rules and regulations Around Wall Street and financial matters. So you see. This is a big opportunity to explain what is going on right to people. That's my first response and then and then I actually show up in New York to do the Jon Stewart Stewart. Show and I've been watching it for a long time. And frankly taken real delight in watching Jon Stewart skewer one guest after another me and all of a sudden it's like realizing Whoa I may be the Turkey at this Thanksgiving dinner. So so the closer I get to going on the more anxious like that and they put you back in this little tiny tiny hiney green were right where they have some food out and some drink salad and I sat there. It could hear through the walls. They're warming up the crowd and I thought what am I doing here. This is this is a really bad idea and go in the bathroom and threw up. Yeah and I thought I may look stupid and more importantly I make the work look stupid so once you kind of clean yourself. And that's what I had to do. I don't remember standing of its tiny little sake and washing my mouth you with my hand and putting cold water all my Chin and looking up look at myself in the mirror and thinking you think anyone can tell you just I grew up so once you get out on. How does it go? It's worse I thought I thought tonight. Eight professor of law at Harvard University. I'm standing behind this big heavy curtain and then Pune weeklies walking on the show Elizabeth Warren into them on stage and all of it is new to me. Welcome welcome to the show you are. You are the head of the Congressional Oversight Panel on this. This relief effort the money that is being funneled funneled to these companies. How much money has been sent to them? And what have these companies done with it. Well we think it's about five hundred ninety billion dollars and he just starts hampering me with questions I mean. He's a smart and thoughtful. Are you confident that the right thing to do was to hand over billions of dollars to these companies. Do you believe that this is going to work. Do you think this was the right thing to do. Are we already behind the eight ball. We started this process. When Secretary Paulson basically said here's three hundred and fifty billion dollars to the financial institutions? And he did it on. He's asking me this he's asked Nazi was the money stolen. Is that why he didn't want any of it was no nothing is feeling coherent. Some of the money is now being committed to peep it. Are you about to curse. Is that an acronym. I'm not even GONNA try right on this one what what is stand for. I don't remember it's an investment my heart rate slowed down and I thought well that's it. I'll call the leader read tomorrow. Harry Reid the head of the Senate and resign politely for having so humiliated myself and the Congressional Oversight Panel and I will resign and he can put someone in who at least can remember the names. I've watched you did you choked. Yeah I choked I checked I. I choked big time. Never it's Public Private Investment Program. I'm sorry it just took me Matt Public Private Investment Program Pip Peop-. Yeah so anyway we finish up and like I'm ready to get out of his chair and the guy comes over to hustle me off because because you remember Jon Stewart's interviews to be one segment and that was it when the commercials come show through with the the guest and he's looking at me any said so. What would you have said about this crisis? And I told him in one sentence and he said okay. Stay and you were granted a television elevation reprieve. Well a reprieve for a second firing squad. I mean who knows a little bit. So why isn't the first thing we do is to say. No one will be allowed to be too big to fail okay. So what you're asking is if we can get this bus pulled out of the ditch the economy. What does the road road look like going forward because this really is the big question I told him about? What's gone wrong in America every ten to fifteen years? There's a financial a panic in our history. You just look at it and there's a big collapse. Big trouble people lose their farms wiped out until we hit the Great Depression. We come out of the Great Depression and you say you know we can do better in this. We don't have to go back to this kind of boom and bust cycle. We come out of the Great Depression with three regulations. We go fifty years without a financial panic without a crisis. Then what happens is say regulation at. It's a pain it's expensive. We don't need it so we start pulling the threads out of the regulatory fabric. And what's the first thing we get. We got the S. and L. Crisis. And what is our repeated response. We just keep pulling the threads out of the regulatory fabric so we have two choices. We're going to make a big decision. Asian probably over the next six months and the big decision. We're going to make is it's going to go one way or the other we're gonNA decide basically. Hey we don't need regulation you know it's fine bloom and bust boom and bust boom bust and good luck with your 401k. Or alternatively we're going to say you know we're GONNA put in some smart regulation. It's going to adapt to the fact that we have new products. And what we're going to have going forward is we're going to have some stability and some real prosperity for ordinary folks and that's socialism. That is the first time in probably six months to a a year that I felt better on something. I don't know what it is that you did right there but for a second that was like financial chicken soup for me. That was thank you. Aw actually put things in perspective and I really do appreciate.

"Jeff. This is Gerry how're you doing good? Great job. And so I wanted to say when you know, watching this what I noticed was as long as she was in her stride so to speak. She was off and running. But when I was just gonna say this, Jeff when Jeff would bring up something that was factual, she's sort of like back started doing the backstroke, and she was not answering and the one there were two statements that that really stay stuck out in my mind, which which I think we're just monumental in the sense of the whole debate in the fact that when you're right. I think I I actually tried to count how many times she did say Trump and Hanson Shelly said pants like four times. But she said Trump like over twenty five times, I would say that I would say at least that's for sure let let me get Jeff in here with us because he owes. Only has a couple of minutes. Theresa called the debate for you. Jeff I did as well. I I don't know how you felt about it. But I thought she did a really good job. And I thought one of the things that that struck me not only was both of you had your talking points down. Although we're still trying to figure out what the rally is that she was talking about you being at some sort of an anti Muslim rally. Have you? Yeah. We've called for an apology. I actually had three different events that day that we're nowhere near an anti Muslim rally. So I am looking for her to ultimately apologized. Do some research act for America. I have no idea we did have Jason Ross who was from young Republicans said that you were at one of their events for about five hours that day. Yeah. Back the blue rally later in the evening supporting police officers and in the morning, I was at a five K run in Andover for veterans. So that day was packed with a lot of great people serving in our military serving in our police and not at all, oh and young college kids to about Muslim, she she might assume that, you know, police because she's talked about the system is being racist from front to back. It could be that she perceived the police as being anti Muslim. I don't know. It seemed to me that she was stumbling around they may have had some sloppy work. Look, I thought that you came across very relaxed much more relaxed than I think I would have expected you to she. She came across his aggressive. Temp. Tents lecturing judgmental kept using the word ugly and smears in shameful. I don't think it was her best best night. I don't think the global call it for you, Jeff. But I think any nonpartisan honest observer would say you had one that debate. And I'll tell you for people who have not locked in in this race yet. And that was the first real impression of you. I think you made a great impression. Thanks, and Dan. It's not about. I I know that you know, what you're doing tonight is great and scoring it and talking to people about it. It's not about winning debate. It's about winning someone who's gonna actually worked for Massachusetts. And that's what I that's been in my heart for the last eight years is a state route that's might my desire. Now, let's go to Washington and be that ancient that's going to work for people of Massachusetts, not talk. So vindictively about other people like Senator Warren guys, and and really, you know, go down there and just still nice one party one president one vice president over and over again to the point where we have no sees the table down in Massachusetts because she's so strident, and I think that's really what's important. Of course. I think it was great that we talked on actual issues. So the fact that I wanna make sure that our veterans take care of the fact that I want to make sure our military basis remained that we have the fact that we want to make sure the economy continues on the pace attack giving more people jobs, and I think that you know, Senator Warren. It just made it clear that for her. It's more about making a run for the White House in twenty twenty and and basically giving up on being a Senator she doesn't really want this job. That's the most amazing part. I mean, I really think that maybe she should take a hard look after tonight about whether she wants to be serving other Senator whether she really wants to make her full-time goal running for the White House. And I think that's really what her heart where her heart is that I will tell you that when she had interrupted you several times, and then at one point you interrupted her, and she said to may I please finish. I I really admired the restraint that you showed there because it was it was the opposite of what I'm sure some people would be concerned about that. You would be disrespectful to her you were very respectful to to to her into the office. I don't think she was respectful to you at all. Last you. Raised me to be respectful of the you know, when you're at somebody's house here respect school, the host. So whenever John Keller was trying to move the topics along and make sure that we were following the schedule I tried to do that. And you know, if if Senator Warren feels like it's important to make a point I guess, I let her finish. But at some point, you know, there was times where I felt she did any inappropriate cut me off. And I mean, we've got two more debates. We'll we'll see if he continues to meaner. Well, Jeff appreciate you calling in. I know you're heading over to a rally of supporters. I believe it's in west Roxbury. So you I think you acquitted yourself very well tonight. And it let's let's see how the other two debates go, and let's see how how the poll numbers. Look, I know the globe won't call it for you tomorrow. And I've looked at this tell you if she'd won the debate chef. I would have said she wanted debate. That's that's my take on it. And I've kept a fairly close scorecard here and not only in terms of substance. You both were very good on substance. You both ad you talking points. But I think stylistically you looked like much more like United States Senator to my way of thinking just in terms of demeanor and calm employs till seeking. Thank you very much. And by the way, it wouldn't be an appearance on your radio show. I did not tell people that if they wanted to help the campaign. Get more ads out make sure we do in this. They can go to deal for Senate dot com. I e h l S Senate dot com. Check out our Facebook page or Twitter accounts that link off of that website because we're posting a lot about tonight's debate. So exciting it's one step closer to November six, and I think wants to closer for me serving in the US Senate for you. Well, I can tell you this you read my mind because that was going to be my next question. But Jeff thanks so much for calling enjoy enjoy the night. I get a good night's sleep and get up. Get get up added. Tomorrow back in the campaign trail right away. You had a great night. And I think you're gonna have a great day tomorrow. Thank you. Jeff. You take care of deal. The Republican candidates six one seven two five four ten thirty triple eight nine two nine ten thirty. Let's keep it rolling here. We're gonna I'm going to say good night. Are you still there? I didn't wanna get to make my point. Okay. Go ahead. Real quick. So when he said, Liz Warren, you voted against the law that would have kept the Boston bombings from happening. And she said, yes, I did. And I'm proud of that because I said that it was against the constitution. In fact, it was not against the constitution that she was wrong. She voted against the law, which which which he was referring to which was the travel ban, which came after the bombings. And at that point. She could have at least said her sympathies to the families did not say one thing about that. He said to her you focus has been on Trump and Pence and in the White House, and you know, what that was the first time in the night, he shot her right down 'cause she turned her head and she was silent. All right. That's her goal. And she's not concerned about the homes in Massachusetts. And I say to anyone that who didn't watch that. And I agree with you. Jeff actually was most poised, and I believe that he he really is looked more like a Senator, but she's not for my house in Massachusetts. So..

"Him some rest, which has been great. We've got Jason Ross which has been great and he's throwing the ball. Really? Well, and so we'll try to keep them there. We're obviously at a critical point in the season. And and he's a guy we're gonna rely on heavily. You know, should we should we take the next step? So it's not think he's a pretty good place. What is your making? Yeah. I mean, I thought it was really where he just he struggled with his fastball tonight. And so there was he was behind an account quite a bit. He has slider. We he was throwing it for a lot of he was able to throw him for strikes. But he was it was kind of the pitch that they were able to sit down a little bit. And so. Just not getting ahead in the count thought had kind of. No, it is kind of narrowed him in as far as what he could do to hitters and then some of their guys took advantage of that. Loses. Well, we got we got three run producers in there. And then, you know, with the guys that are have been at the top for most of the year and yell. Ian Kane there's there's guys on base for them when they hit. And so it's all it's all connected. The lineups connected and their success each other success. I think is really connected. When the pitcher's facing? You're with men on base all the time and the stretch and worrying about good baserunners like Lorenzo, and Elliott's it's helpful. And and so those guys have reaps dividends of that. But then it's part of our. Our thought was having those guys in there. They're both all capable of home runs and power and Donut Burs.
