Kirk Douglas, Towering Icon of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Dies at 103
"So that's from the nineteen sixty film Spartacus it's Kirk Douglas in one of the best known scenes of his long Hollywood career Kirk Douglas died yesterday at the remarkable age of a hundred and three throughout the fifties and sixties he embodied a certain romantic idea of Old World masculinity in his films he often made movies about cowboys and soldiers prize fighters and rebels his most famous movie was Spartacus but the movie that made him a Hollywood star with the nineteen forty nine boxing movie champion the person he was in real life often mirrored the tough man that he portrayed on screen Kirk Douglas had a difficult childhood he grew up in New York in extreme poverty he actually was a wrestler and spent time in the navy before his success on Broadway he later went on to make movies that now define the era of Hollywood classics in nineteen eighty one Kirk Douglas received the presidential medal of freedom and fifteen years later he earned an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement Jason Gorder he's a movie critic and a big fan of Kirk Douglas is work and he's here to reflect on the actors impact on the film world to chase and thanks for being here my pleasure and honor to speak about this giant of talent what do you think when you think Kirk Douglas I think somebody that helped change what we think of of modern cinema frankly he's he bridge is very much the gap between sort of the traditional Hollywood leading man that's sort of you know the beautiful dimple in the middle of his chin the incredible physique a sort of sense that we had of the strong man the strong big actor but is also somebody that brought a great deal sensitivity to his character system the steps two wasn't simply a matinee idol who somebody that sort of brought through his performance a dramatic richness that would we'd be exhibited in many of his contemporaries people like Burt Lancaster but also into people like Marlon Brando who get celebrations and more but he also brought a very political a sophisticated political angle to his films he somebody that absolutely shifted the conversation but what it was like to be a performer not simply studio tool but somebody that could take charge of his own career and shift at and that's when the look of the great things that he did everything that we saw after the fact of of these performers that are able to shape their careers much more explicit way he was a pioneer on that front would you consider that is greatest contribution or what for you just it gleams above all the rest I mean for me my personal connection or to serve master pieces which are the films that he did with Kubrick puzzle glory was a film that nobody wanted to make nobody wanted to make this sort of anti war sophisticated look at World War one it was sort of it was a war that nobody was particularly interested in such a grisly film that about moral ambivalence that wasn't really to be taken up and he and his production company Brina named after his mother foster got the money together now a great deal the budget went towards him but nonetheless he gave a shot to this this quirky New York filmmaker called Stanley Kubrick an fifty seven nineteen sixty while he was doing Spartacus the other our grand collaboration there's another director and after a week Douglas realize this is not going to work and he brought in correct now that the dynamic between the two of them was a little tenuous but none the less he brought this to start the superstar director to one of the sort of last big epic Hollywood cast of thousands films and still injected with the with this real subtlety and real intelligence of performance and finally with Spartacus again the connection Douglas Trumbull is it was Kirk Douglas who unapologetically said this blacklisted armed writer is going to get credit actually John F. Kennedy cross the picket line in order to see Spartacus this is what broke the blacklist the famous arms those that were accused of being communists so in so many ways I Kirk Douglas of star power was used for good he was used to bring stories to screen that would have been brought otherwise he brought directors that otherwise Hollywood didn't think that were I'm sufficiently commercial and you brought to light the hypocrisy of actually bring these writers to to dream if for the if you only watch two forms of Kirk Douglas these are ones actually fully sober in you know a lot of people will be doing that tonight I want to play you a clip from almost thirty years ago no looking back I realize I was much more successful when I forgot about being a hit for years I proclaim loudly that a movie must be good entertainment no messages for me but I've changed it must in some small way touch improve humanity that was Kirk Douglas accepting a lifetime achievement award from the American film institute and you can hear that Douglas was ingesting this chiseled jaw line or a typical Hollywood celebrity of the era is like you say he was a man of principle and you're quite cranky I hear that a lot of people didn't get along with him but is that how he will be remembered do you think is a man of principle was incredibly philanthropic and and again his story is fascinating he has for his father was a smart the dealer a rag command in upstate New York came from nothing I'm dealt with severe anti semitism the sun changes name sort of inculcates himself into Hollywood as a sort of brash fully American leading man from that he saw the the division between high and low and he really took that film trophic spirit that's that moral spirit the moral conviction through his career what a hundred three is a long time to live but he lived a very very full life and I believe when he was getting at AFI award he had just been in a tragic helicopter accident then here he is again I'm coming to the fore because he was called his performance he was there to actually have the signs that he also had a stroke he's kind of had nine lives and his son Michael Douglas was watching all of this and he's an acting icon in his own right do you think that that what is it from Kirk Douglas that you see that Michael Douglas has it has in him I mean I've said the drive the conviction but of the the big deal is that once a problem OR one flew over the cuckoo's nest was a Kirk Douglas production he actually did the stage production he got the rights again he saw this very quirky very politically charged project his son would eventually produce the film in the Afghan Oscar glory because of that so so the the tradition certainly carries along with Michael Douglas but the I mean it's it's for for viewers who are not familiar with this film we just don't really have a Kirk Douglas anymore the system doesn't really work with that but we have certain people the Brad Pitt's of this world who are stars but also bringing in these films after their production so it's quite remarkable thank you so much Jason Jason is a film critic he joins us live in the studio to talk about the death of Hollywood actor Kirk Douglas who died yesterday at the age of a hundred

FACEBOOK Grew up in Sun Valley located. No kidding wow were you on the scheme in high school and I mean pre high school I would ask and then I'm sure with you. It's going to be really serious about school or are you. It sounds like you guys have a winner school. We can go to school all summer. Long have the winter or summer. We did not but I think in steamboat. They did. That's where a lot of Olympians came from but one of the one of the guys on my ski team I went to the Olympic. So it was it was it was still pretty Hardcore data is awesome dickey missing. Yeah I did but it was cross country so proper entry. Yeah freestyle cross-country. It's the it's the kind of skiing you see in the Olympics where they're like skating That was okay see. I don't I don't know anyone that in proxy that that does that kind of scheme. Yeah it was. I love it and we got into a little bit of of of tally there. But like let's let's start earlier in the background. Like where do you up in cool. Ski Town Kid You WanNa like go to a big city for college like I want to do. What's going through your mind? Will it was for me. Actually I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur actually I've a little flyer that my mom saved. She showed me a couple years ago but I went door to door offering would stacking and poop scooping services when I was nine and actually when I was a freshman in college I started my first company which I ended up growing to four hundred employees dot. I built a one of the largest residential house painting companies in Massachusetts so I actually moved moved to To Boston to start this company. Anthony as a teenager and that company got acquired and I built a a couple of other companies thereafter. So I've just always been in love with the idea of You know taking an idea that you're passionate about from scratch and turning it into something and At least for me tally is the thing that's been closest to my heart. Because growing up there was just a lot of There's a lot of anxiety in our household around money and my mom in particular. Is this really dynamic eccentric. SMART person she works. It's really hard. Runs her own business and despite all of that She just there's just a lot of A lot of financial financial stress and she really hasn't been able to reach Chennai ever financial goals. So I was just like man. I want to build a service. That's capable of taking the load off of people and allow them to live their lives lives and so my mom. She's an exercise and she's a Ravi again. It's like you do all that okay and we're GONNA pay all your bills and manage everything for you just like if you had like a team of five. I people working for you and I want to build that into software so that we cannot take take all that All that off of off of the human experience plate and allow people to just do what they love right so this is an interesting kind of play. I always get to it so you grew up in an entrepreneurial family like this was instilled in you from from day one it was never. I'M GONNA go work for some big bank or something you know any my parents were Were Very Encouraging that we we should charter on path. And Actually I was home schooled for the first All the way through sixth grade and end you know I mean even my mom. She's like. Hey what do you Wanna learn and I was like well. I WANNA learn about taxidermy. She's like okay so she went through the yellow pages and cold. Called taxidermists is and found one that would let us camp out in their workshop for a a week or so and like we'd go there and you learn about the taxidermy business in all the chemicals they use and everything things so it was just this idea of. Hey the world is your oyster. You just have to be willing to go you know make phone call or knock on the door and go explore and you can learn anything. You want You just have to be willing to go after it so Feel really really fortunate. It's really empowering way to to educate here's some crappy don't Wanna learn learn it memorize. Yeah like learns actually care about exactly and it's just that that intrinsic motivation. My parents were always. It was all about curiosity and chasing your curiosity so for me. I was never at a point where I dreaded school like I always like. I couldn't wait to go to school like me when I hear my friends talking about. Like the next game of thrones. I haven't watched that here. It's over but when they were talking about the next episode that excitement and anticipation. That's kind of what I felt going to school because I was like. What am I gonNA learn? And what new ideas am I gonNA the House. Oh yeah that was definitely thanks to my parents okay. So then. What's the start of this of this house painting company? Yeah it was just I mean when you're eighteen years old old end Wanting to start a business I was like. Hey I want to do something. That will require a lot of employees because I really wanted to learn about leadership and I wanted to learn about on just like the actual people side of running a business and so that seemed like an accessible thing for me and the first year I had about Fifty employees and then ended up going from there to About four hundred when I sold the company and honestly I mean I I did eventually get an NBA from University of Chicago. But I learned more in those couple years running house painting business than I. I haven't any other point in my life and just just a complete crash course in you. Know recruiting in hiring firing managing on challenging situations on creating a management structure. All all of that was It was just this really really stressful. Suppose the most stressful point in my life but it was the place where I got A. I don't know if you've heard of the ten thousand arose but I I got a good chunk of my ten thousand hours of of building. It managing a company in the in College Shar so you started it in Colorado or Massachusetts in Massachusetts so I ended up going to school Boston University and I went the two classes at Bu but other than that. I was working the entire time. So I don't know a single person from view at least that did you graduate. I did I'm a buckner so I I graduated highest honors but literally. I'd be sitting in the back. I'd have my laptop open. I'm like sending emails like dealing with issues. And then I'd have my notebook on the other side taking notes so it was a very multitasking signs. Do you regret that. I do not I did go to business school for the reason that I wanted in intellectual vacation and when I was in business school I really enjoyed myself. I worked at a venture capital firm. I wanted to. I thought for a little bit I wanted to be a VC. But I realized that. I'm an operator Raider. But I took like a machine learning courses like I just went like super deep in finance and I just had a blast in college or I'm sorry and business school so I made up a little little bit for the sacrifice. Is The path Painting Company Sell Painting Company business. School no I started a new company after the painting company when I graduated. And we It's called Bass Dot Com and We ended up Boo Shopping the company. All the way till seven years in The only money we took was twenty twenty million for maybe S. capital partners after it was already very successful and You know kind of more to the private equity stage but we actually actually wrote our own screen sharing software so this was way way back in the day and what our vision was is that you know. This was in the birth of spyware and like people's computers were constantly having issues so he said we want to have a PC care subscription service so that any normal consumer Ken Press a button and have remote tech support instantly without having to talk anybody and then every quarter. Our our technicians would remote into the computer and maintain it to prevent issues like changing oil in the car. And so that was our our brain child right out of college in down built that up and then I was like. Hey you know what I. It's been a lot of hard work. I WANNA go take this vacation Chicago and it was. It was wonderful two years. That's actually where I met my co-founder from next to company so awesome and so you said you intern. During between years one and two the I did YEP in Chicago. Ah note was in Silicon Valley so there's a A Pacific Northwest Venture capital firm. They do a series they investing called Voyager capital and. I actually really was just supposed to intern. But they kept. Were having me look at deals and do work when I went back to Chicago. Yeah so it really taught me a lot. I learned a lot about fundraising and how bad most pitchers are. I learned how painful it is to be on that side of the table when pitches a really bad And I also learned that. It's I mean no offense to anybody who is a V. V. C. but it's a very passive sort of world you're like you're trying to identify and pick value creators but you're not like creating value yourself in for for at least my disposition. I just love

Skip you've been in a relationship and you've got to self talk w light you know what I'm GonNa end it. I just know it's not the right thing to do. We're going into directions. She wants different thing. He wants different things. You got this all plan that genie get home. I'm going to say you know what Babe I just think it's time for us is to go out separate ways you must have a negative. It's all bad break. Yeah you get there you like. Hey how you doing see. You had a great day at work because you care now you don't care about get out kit rocks however what if you don't call call be lose my number Yada Yada Yada. Jerry can't do this because he allowed himself to get close to this situation and remember. This is one reason why the military do not let higher ups have relationships with subordinates. Because it cloud your judgment. It makes it so hard for you to do things that you know you should do. Jerry knows what he should you do because we've gotten so close. It's hard for me to believe I believe that over the course of this nine year relationship as an owner coach. Jason has gone on vacation with Jerry. Very believe he's gone to Jerry's home and had nice meals or a celebration. I agree with Jerry is so skip it makes it so much harder because deep down. Here's what you look here. We've been together nine years. I've got four eight hundred. Five hundred seasons Made the playoffs three times. I missed the other times so I know what I should do down and I liked Jason. He's like a son term it years and you he gave Sam we have lived together and they have give because like you said he was. Troy's backup you WanNa Championship together. He was his offense as a coordinator and he promoted him to head coach. There's a lot of history there. But and plus you said Jay read would it pro football say their own looking at team they got some bad breaks here. J. Like you know what we did. Get a couple of bad breaking Jason's really not that bad 'cause you see how you look. We look to Washington skill. Look how we look. The first time around gets phillies killed so he look at what we did to. The Rams team had a winning record and we destroyed him. No He's he's looking at it but because he jerry has the range of emotions if he's ready to fire. I was surprised that Jay was allowed to get back on the plane. At the New England. Game Ain't and then he comes out and then Chicago game. They lose on a Thursday night skipping puts his arm around him a that's when he came up with we had a football life together almost seemed like I can't let this guy go skip. Look he's Jerry is looking deep down. Maybe if I just give him a two year deal say Jay somebody you to turn this thing around. I'm getting some new coaches Yada. Yada Yada and this thing will be different. He knows what he should do. But because his heart is so connected to Jason Jason it makes it almost impossible for him to do it because he also knows nine years. I've groomed Jason. He's GonNa take everything they all in the paper Apor Agua I can beat him up. beat him down and he's going to take it in stride and just go say hey we gotta keep our head that remember we keep our heads down and we keep working keep grinding and jared all know somebody that's GonNa be. They say that I don't know if they're going to be able to take it. So that's what's going on. Skip he's too close to the situation. He allowed himself to get too close to Jason Get In his tearing at his heart that he knows he needs to let Jason go but he can't right now for once. I unfortunately agreed with every word you just utter and I must say publicly. My worst football nightmare is taking place right before my very eyes and I can't do anything to stop it. In fact the more I sit over here and pound his desk Jerry wakeup jakup finally and fire this man. He's a nice guy. We all agree. He's not the right guide to coach The Dallas Cowboys going forward. You Know Jerry and I know at Gerry. Shannon Sharpe deep down. I believe he knows it though. He won't admit it out and yet the more I beat this table. Trust me on this because I know Jerry Jones. The more I found the more he's going to dig in because he he has lived his life his oil and gas life. Doing just the opposite of what everybody totally should do. Jerry you're done you're tapped out. You gotTA quit. You gotta go
Island of the Idols Episode 2 Recap
"All right so I'm very excited to be back with. You live here tonight. Let's talk about episode episode number two. I really enjoyed this episode that this was a lot of fun tonight. Steven yeah this was great. I it was a great cast. It's a really great cast on growth as as has down as I was on the island of the idols premise. It's so fun and like a kind of a campy way but it's it's a fun can't be what okay all right so. We're going to talk about that and much more here tonight. As we kick off your survivor week. I love an exit interview with Molly tomorrow morning. It'll be on the lookout exit interviews back back. Bradley is going to be here in the studio. We'll get into a feedback show with your friend of Mine Shannon Gates this week oh well and plus the wiggle room and this week and survivor ever all coming up here on the podcast not to mention what's happening on the BNB and why Imali lost all here on ROB's website dot com but Stephen. I I want to start. Dr With a quiz told you this whole time was going to be a quiz Steven. If you're paying attention I definitely was not paying attention. Where will who is going to be on the feedback. Show now who Stephen Jair yesterday right where were you should have held out a AH. Where were we five years ago tonight. Stephen like in our lives like emotionally. Yes state eight of agitation. I probably but tonight five years ago tonight October. Second Twenty fourteen was the first I ever live know it alls us in a state of agitate yeah you and I were in the basement of the Gotham Comedy Club with seventy five of our closest assist friends. We couldn't believe seventy. Five people came out to see us. We watched Val Collins. Find to idols on redemption should island or on exile island before she was voted out and Stephen could you could you believe it five years ago tonight. I can't believe we're still bill France. That was a scary episode for me later because you know we were we made so much fun of valid time and who's now like one of my great friends. I was was terrified going back to play with Jeremy that he would never forgive me for for having mocked his wife what a fun night that was. I was very very very nervous obviously missile in advance of of that yeah who can and now it's like we can like then we sold seventy five tickets now so we can sell eighty ninety tickets like we've we've It's gotten so big okay so he was five years ago. Tonight's Fund October Second Twenty Fourteen and I've seen some pictures today in our patron group of people that were there that first night that the original seventy yeah that's who can. I get invited to that group. I would like to be part of that yeah. I think that we could talk about that. Let's talk about offline. Okay all right so steven we should talk about this big vote and I kind of thought a weekend the bait and switch did they dangle all this molly vote off in front of us and then here. I go hook line and sinker but a big move a big blindside at the Second Travel Council yeah and I'm really curious to talk about it with you because I couldn't decide like is this like obviously every every site is good for some people bad for other people but like from from those kinds of people in the middle from the Kelly's in the Tommy's of the world like is this the right decision or is this just sort of the excitement of a big move who've early yeah I side with. I think it might be the excitement of a big move early. I mean it was exciting for me. I I loved it. I wonder if if the people that were in the middle might have had a little bit of the big move by the way Hashtag Rha. If you WANNA get your questions here live into the show show so yeah Stephen. I feel like that who specifically do you think might have been just caught up in the excitement. I mean I think we we can you know I think the the shows sort of presented us these like this. You know when when Tommy heard about it he was like Whoa Whoa hold the phone I don't Wanna I don't WanNa do that. Necessarily and I'm sure there was a lot of thinking that ultimately and probably many conversations that ultimately went into the his his decision in it you know they presented as do I go after I could go right. You know of course horse. There's many more subtle interplay in conversation that goes into it but I kind of think. It seems to me no brainer in that in that situation you've Jason Jason like Jason is like you know no reason Nora but I mean I say this with respect for Jason and you know love for my d'appel nerd out there who has so many great lines and I just feel like that. Don't know dancing like this. This is Fort Lewis as villas yeah. It was so fantastic by just a no brainer enter to get rid of that guy now yeah because I think that the people that we saw talking about this. It seemed like that Lauren was the ringleader of the the Let's let's take out molly here so that molly is the person who she's the new poverty we have to get get rid of. Mali early and it seemed like that she was the person who really got the momentum going we saw her talking with Janet ultimately with Kelly and with Tommy as well and they were able to get nor Jason onboard but it didn't seem like that Nora and Jason were people that were they were particularly close to. It seemed like it was more of a shot across the bow of that three. Eh of Jamal and Jack and molly and it did seem to Lawrence credit sheets. It seemed like she was like well. If I do this now I can pull in Nora and Jason Right like these are people like why get rid of these people when these are people I can use and work with later and that's pretty valid. You know if you don't feel like you're empower or in control of what's happening and any of these three people who think that they're running things and then over here like you're like Oh. I can like forge bonds and build build a relationship where these people are. GonNa really value me simply because I've saved them here whereas those people like they don't seem to value me at all you know like those people are treating me like I'm a number. They're telling me where to vote. I mean you had that great conversation with Kellyanne and Lauren and Janet where they're like. Oh so what do we do in a bright before. Lauren proposed the plan or what are we doing guys. Nicole and we're like we've received our orders. You know we are told us with the votes you. There was no sense of like conversation between them decision making between them. It was more like the bosses have told us what to do and we must do that thing so you know to the sense that like you want to play okay with people who value your perspective you. WanNa play with people who are GonNa look to you and ask you questions. I see the idea of of a of sacrificing. I sing of sacrificing molly to keep to keep Jason and Nora but it also is this is gonNA cause a lot of dissension within the tribe right like getting rid rid of Jason like Nora's North got nowhere to go but voting out molly now you know Jamal. You know that Jack are going to be really really really betrayed in the way that on the other tribe we we saw Aaron Aaron. Yes here in bay feeling very betrayed. Okay yeah so he he definitely wants to open up the episode. So where do you think this goes from here. Here can Jamal Jack rebound against the forces that ended up taking out molly at this with this sort of just like a one time shot across the Dow now and then they turn back around and go after a Jason or Nora at the next vote yea I mean it seems like a tough one because it doesn't seem like a cohesive group really came together in the way that last or certainly we didn't see the narrative of like you know. This is a really tight for some now. It wasn't it wasn't like you think think oh now. Kelly Janet. Lauren and Tommy are going to go together for you know moving in the way that on on the other tribe we saw we the women's Allianz Forum. We saw Vince Elaine and Tom Form so yeah I mean I I. It seems like the Purple tribe is is a lot more

This went so far already the devil's in the details yup. He coined that phrase. He may take a photo every today and look. I don't think magic is going to happen but my but have you ever tried a buzzed about product product where you read like fifty articles. It's like i know ev articles like this changed my life and celebrity swear by and then you try it and it doesn't do anything like yes but i've also had the experience where something does do something like when i tried bill ashiq ricerche p fifty your sweet sweet baby used in quite some time because of pregnancy z. and childbirth essner saying yeah even though it's probably fine. I'm being like super paranoid but that i do think is like a pretty amazing product but yes. I hear you because you don't see when these celebrities are like. I tried this agustinus a spotter cream and look homeys. My skin is like they also have like meals delivered to their house. They have a personal trainer. They like facials every weekday shows every week they blazers yes everywhere so it's just like okay yes. The cream is great but like you also have so much else going on that is making your skin. Look amazing. Yeah yeah probably getting fillers bo talk like which is fine but like don't just all say it's the cream. I like it. You are spicy today. I'm spiciest so that was my big purchase but then there was a sephora sale very recently. Yes and we should tell people that i had been sort of off the problem. The new product trained for quite some time live very off of it. Yeah i was just like i like what i like. I don't have the time or the energy to start exploring new products and then the sephora sale just real me the and i was like you know what i do. Self-care slash skin-care podcast. I might as well buy some stuff and check it out for the sake of the listeners that's right. You didn't do it for yourself for this. Podcast lists yeah <hes> do you and then you got some stuff. I squeaked in at the last did but you know what happened. I squeaked in the last day like eleven p._m. And then i forgot to use the code for fifteen percent. Oh my god has it ever happened to you where you're like. I'm gonna make big purchase because of a code and then you forget to use it yeah. I had a meltdown so i emailed sephora through their customer service link and the next morning i got the nicest reply from the person who was like we can't add the from a customer sales rep who simply can't add the code to your purchase because purchase already in the system so they added the equivalent of what fifteen percent off obt my purchase fifty percents off of my purchase to the to my account. That's also have this money sitting in my account. That never expires that i can use that i thought that was a very positive customer. Service secure safaris again and not a sponsor of this podcast. Just we're just fans just fan. So what did you buy in. This rebellious purchase plunged plunged. Let me break it down for you so i started with not one but two bottles bottles can what are they jars. No not jars jugs containers pieces of supergroup unseen unseen sunscreen bottles yeah but it comes in like a squeezy to be a two. That's the word you're looking for. I was looking for a two jug. Thank you know not a jug. I really like the sunscreen it goes on so smoothly it is unseen. It blends in really nicely. I use it on my arms and i'm keeping a tube tube of it on my bathroom counters. I remember to put it on my arms and hands. You put it on your face. Well i still use the japanese sunscreen sunscreen. Oh interesting okay but you cannot get safaris so i bought two of those. I also decided that i was going to do a little experiment with me. Solaire water <hes> controversial so what i i did was i bought three different ones one by cowardly one by tart and one by premera which i learned is owned owned by amaury pacific intriguing <hes> it's like they're you know cheaper clean brand. Oh interesting pursing so you're having it's like america's test kitchen but dory's test kitchen for toy story test bathroom does for me. What made you decide to go deep on me slur water well i was out of. I may slayer water which i didn't you know homey. Slur waters are not created equal. I they have a very deep reference for the bioter-. I know which they don't sell before <hes> i had been sort of dabbling. I have a have a travel the size of the bio dermot that i do really like <hes>. I've also really liked simple. I've tried the most recent one. I tried was laroche. Jose didn't didn't love it. I love the scent. I've also tried number. Seven boots number seven me slayer flare water which was fine. I just thought you know what let's mix it up so i bought these three last time. They used the primera. I liked liked it. It's a camomile missile cleansing water and it sounds yeah it was it did feel really nice so i'll i'll report back all of those <hes> the other thing that i was out of was a a day cream and i'd like to use a lightweight gel moisturizer i had been using the tart water gel essence moisturizer and and when i went i was like i like this heart water gel 'sorry tasha gotcha tasha water essence which i liked i mean i liked it enough. I think i recommended a newsletter but i was like you know all things being equal. I do think i liked the bio sants squally and probiotic joe moisturizer just a little better and then you know what i went onto sephora. The tasha was not being sold anymore mysterious odd so i bought another thing of the bioscience and then i thought you know what let me try this other. One by origins called jin zing zing oil free energy boosting gel moisturizer which which also comes in a mini version which i like so i could just sort of try it out. You got the mini. I got the mini. I tried tried this morning. It smells kind of orangey. It's a little thicker than i was expecting but a nice consistency and ice texture sure very smooth so i like it so far i mean i've used at one day so we'll see and then i got another one of my bare minerals primetime eyelid primer which is my favorite. That's an old hat but what's so funny is. I realized i always stock up on it. During the sales i wonder as much makeup purpose i used to so i went into the drawer that i keep like all my extra stuff like my stockpiles and i already had to well my gosh in there so i now now have three so. I need to remind myself that next time the sale
Should You Really Punch an Animal in the Nose If Attacked?
"Today's episode is brought to you by the capital one venture card the capital one venture card you earn unlimited double miles on every purchase everyday and you can use those miles toward travel expenses like flights hotels the rental cars and more just book and pay for your travel using your venture card and redeemer miles toward the cost capital one. What's in your wallet. Credit approval required capital one bank u._s._a. N._a. Look into brain stuff production of iheartradio. Hey brain stuff. Lauren vogel bomb here. Let's say something has gone horribly wrong and you're in a physical fight with another human person. If that person punched you in the face what make you back off some might say that getting punched in the nose hurts like unreasonably so and that they would disengage others might argue that it would merely incite their ire after the initial shock kolin would kick in and then make even quicker work of their opponent when it comes to animal attacks the answer to whether a punch to the nose would stop an attack pretty much lies with what kind of animal you're considering punching and let's just make it clear right now that you should do all you can to avoid provoking animal attack and that if you're not being attacked punching any kind of animal is means for admittance into the special hell but that aside let's talk about a few different animals that have a reputation for needing a good stick in the nose and and whether that would actually help save your skin. The shark is the animal. Perhaps most commonly singled out for a defensive sucker punch. The rumor is that a good hard punch to the snout is going to send a shark reeling. There are a couple of problems with this. Though one is that it's super hard to punch anything underwater making dump on the nose pretty unrealistic another issue while shark noses are sensitive their gills and is are much more vulnerable punching one in the nose probably wouldn't do enough damage to stun it and you've got the added problem of needing to get a little too close for comfort to its enormous gaping jaws so perhaps no on punching sharks unless it's actively early and aggressively up in your face your best bet would generally be to swim away quickly and quietly as possible and keep in mind that we're not sharks preferred snacks. They usually approach humans out of curiosity rather than predation another suggested attacker for which a punch in the nose might work bears in many many cases. It's best to play dead around bear if they're just curious or if a mother is defending her cubs playing dead means they'll likely lose interest in you and amble on but it's also certainly appropriate to try to fight off aggressive bear and while it's not a sure thing punching more hitting bear is certainly going to help you fight it off so go go ahead in clocking in the knows if it's absolutely necessary of course the animal that's really going to be useful to punch is one that has a wildly sensitive snout so we present to you the animal it would be most useful to open the knows if it were attacking you. The star nosed mole with one hundred thousand sensory three neurons in its snout. It's extremely sensitive to touch however you'll almost certainly never need to defend yourself from one although they look like creatures out of a gemmell del toro film the star nosed mole is the size of a mouse and way more interested in eating worms than in bothering you today's episode written by kate kirschner and produced by tyler playing brain stuff is the production of iheartradio's how stuff works for more in this and lots of other sensitive topics visitor home planet housed networks dot com and from our podcast my heart radio doesn't iheartradio app apple podcasts or wherever you listen to your favorite shows money vertical of it and i'm jason jason pfeiffer editor in chief of entrepreneur magazine and what we know is this. Star Wars: Galaxy Edge to open at Disneyland on Friday
"And we've been talking about this all morning long, the galaxy Star Wars galaxy edge it's. What this story says, from the Orange County Register which I, I guess there's some validity here. Is that the Star Wars galaxy edge could pump fourteen billion dollars into the region's economy, over forty years. Which okay, I, although I don't know how much fourteen additional. I don't know. Because here's the thing isn't Disneyland packed all the time, anyway. And the money is spent although maybe they're talking about the sales tax on a two hundred dollar lightsaber, and affording dollar flight of beer as the Nathan Jason Jason Nathanson said earlier when he's at Disneyland for us. Well for him and then reported but I so it's, it's, it's crazy making it really is. I'm not gonna go just too crowded. John is going. He'll be there Sunday morning. I think he's shows up at four AM. And he will be reporting on Monday,

"Jason Jason Jason. I am so disappointed in you. Have you have you know? No. I mean, you have military friends. That's being I had I had Marcus Latrell. Just happened to be over at my house, right? Incident happened the over this happens. And and I just was talking to this young man about how much. I love my daughter. Oh, and have you met Marcus Latrell lone survivor navy seal? Yeah. He. He lived by himself for days. He took on a whole Afghan army by himself in the end any survived, and then just Marcus it. Yeah. I love I love that little lady that you're into enough said. Part of a long time with you. You have various experiences where you have. I mean, some would say intimidate intimidated younger. Younger men that may want to date one of your daughters. All I no, no, no, no. I mean, the worst one you're talking about the pizza one. Yeah. The worst one and an I contend the best one, and you can do this all you need is you need a friend who's a cop. That's it make friends with a cop. Okay. Just saw when your daughter turns or a male stripper that has a uniform even that that might work that might work, although your your daughter will know like I just had I just we have security, so I have a security, and my kids know, they can find anything about anybody at any time. And so I just had security sit at another table, but you can do this dads with a cop friend. Okay. I don't know what you were going to offer them. Maybe just pay them pay them scale just have them sit at another table. And whatever you say they just start to look at you. When you look over to them, and they have to be on their phone. They have to be sitting like the next table over and they have to sit at their phone, and you just look at them. And when you look at them they just have to shake their head. Okay. It doesn't matter. Yes. No doesn't matter just have to shake their head. Okay. So that was the deal going in. So this kid we are gonna meet at a pizza parlor, we're gonna have dinner. And so my daughter is there, and he shows up, and it's nice and everything else, and we're just having nice little chitchat, and I asked him about himself, and eventually we get into you know, does he have any? How is he is a driver and have any any speeding tickets Ono, sir? None at all. None. Really, none. That's when I look over my friend, and he just shakes his head. Now. He's not doing anything. He's playing a game. Probably. He just shakes his head in the kid goes. Okay. Okay. There is that one. But I didn't know it was a one way street, and it was very confused, and I just put my hand up, and I sit down, and I know I know you don't have to tell me, I know, and he just looked at me. And then he looked like it's no big deal. And then we just moved on for a while. Okay. We just had a nice conversation. Then when we got up he had was having coke, and he had finished his can of coke. And I said to him as we're getting up walking away. He got up, and I said you done with your coke. And he said yes now before I went I had turned a ziplock bag inside out. And I put it in my pocket. So I take it out of my pocket, and I put my hand in the ziplock bag, which is inside out. And then I grabbed the can of coke, and I put it now, and I roll down the ziplock bags so now, it's right side. And I zip it up. And he said. What what do you? Are you doing I said just just just running some tests? That's all I had to say he went white. We laughed and I was really proud of my my my daughter didn't know whether I would run. We have to keep them off balance. She wasn't sure if I would run them or not. And and so. So I saw a we we laughed, and I was feeling pretty good until like two days later the phone rings, my house, I could still see this. Because I thought I mean all of a sudden like I had tunnel vision. Everything went dark.

And he just looked at me, and he looked at hand. Like, it's no big deal. And I zip it up, and he said. What are you? What are you? What are you doing? I said just just just running some tests. That's all I had to say she went white we left, and I was really proud of my my my daughter didn't know whether I would run. We have to keep them off balance. She wasn't sure if I would run them or not. And and so. So we we laughed and I was feeling pretty good until like two days later the phone rings, my house, I could still see this. Because I thought I mean all of a sudden had tunnel vision. So it's it's a little weird for us because we're in this insulated part of the valley here in Salt Lake where there's not much going on. But apparently down south end up north Dylan said he got high centered coming out of his driveway with so much snow. I'm hearing Utah county bogged in passer, avalanches. Yeah. So now, I'm not seeing any accidents reported right now. But just so you're aware canyons or having their their four wheel drive or chain restrictions right now, and you're going to need some extra time if you're coming from either north or south to come to downtown Salt Lake once you get to either point of the mountain it looks like it's fine. But we will have snow off and on throughout your morning commute. That's traffic. Thank you very much. "One of the jasons Jason but'real judicial dictatorship. Yes. So I this is this is really Erkan me lately. Every time a federal judge will going back. The last time a judge really really pissed me off was when they basically they put the injunction for getting rid of Dhaka. Like when really really long list, but I'll skip to this two instances time. But that is just amazing to me because that was not a law that was something that the president. Then President Obama just did which you could probably you could even say that was just unconstitutional executive order this thing just as kind of a stopgap didn't go the congress could have. But the moment of the present this current president tried to dump it give the power back to congress. He said, no, you can't do that. I'm like, what is like how you're not interpreting any law like this is understand that. Well, the the most recent one was I believe it was yesterday where a district judge that's still considered a federal judge, right? Federal judge shut down the president's plans to not allow asylum seekers when they enter the country illegally to claim asylum. They have to go through a legal, you know, like an actual point of entry to do that. So they have to actually go through the. Process that is laid out for them to go through right? Well, okay. So let's talk about that. Because the law is the act the refugee act is kind of ache on that. So basically, there is some wording that says, basically, if you interpret it the way this judge interpreted, I guess as long as they get inside the United States or get to the border. They can claim a Silom. Now, this one of the reasons why got out of the Marine Corps, and it's probably just military wide because they make you do things that just don't make sense. Like, there's like guys commonsense. We don't have to use commonsense here. This the refugee act was enacted in nineteen eighty they obviously had no idea that there was going to be this tactic of two thousand three thousand whatever people just flooding down to the border. They didn't think about that. Now, that's obvious that people like now be like okay now, maybe we should use commonsense here. But of course, this is all about judicial activism here. So he doesn't really care. He went off of a lawsuit from the southern poverty Law Center for crying out loud and the ACLU. I mean, it's got activism written all over it. But so the law states that basically is long as they're here. However, they got here they can claim asylum. Now, those are kind of built off of also like UN guidelines, and again, one of the reasons why these mega super, you know, treaty organizations like the UN e you whatever how you can see the dangers where this can encroach on your sovereignty if you're just going along with this just because it's right for this country at this time doesn't mean it's going to be right for another country at another time. But this is one of those things where this is a judge that his entire job. His entire re reason for being is to ensure that law and order is being maintained in the country right now, he's agreeing to put an injunction to help people break the law to then apply for asylum. I just I'm wit's end on this. Now the injunction I think only lasts until maybe mid December. And then they'll be another decision made on it. But I mean, I just. I'm at a loss. Like how bad is this going to get? I mean, mean. I'm an idiot. So I don't know how that all that process works. But is it possible just to be devil's advocate? The judge could do the injunction to send it to to a higher court to let them kind of really analyze it and figure out what the right course, of that versus him just being he might just be activist judge, right? But he's a he's an Obama appointed judge. That would be possible. I don't understand really what you would even get out of that. Because I'm I'm assuming that this court would say the president has jurisdiction here to decide who who doesn't doesn't come into the country. He just doesn't want to be the guy to make Obama, man. I dunno ticket to somebody else. You figure it out..

"I will say one caveat, especially for people who are in a head to head format leagues is specially if you're playoff start early. I know some leagues head to head leagues have moved their playoffs towards like the first week of September last week of August to avoid September call ups and all the issues that happened for fantasy leagues around that. He does have a five game stretch in nationally parks at the end of August. So there's, you know, there's probably about, you know, three or four games that he may not be in the lineup, other than as a pinch hitter for that stretch. But other than that, I one hundred percent law so it should adopt in my room. I tweeted something dirty all star game and said, the winner of the all star game is determined pitcher hitting rule, the rest of the season. I love that. And I heard one yesterday on the broadcast. This is what I liked. When you play in the other league, did you have to you bring your rules with you? So the American League folks love the d. h. nationally hate it. So you have interleague play because this wasn't a raise a Miami game. When the rays of Miami, you're playing in Miami d. h. applies with their playing the Tropicana field pitcher's hit and led the fans take a look at it, and this sucks or this rules and God. I don't like it early plan. All aside from the the bay series, we've got your natural rivalry maybe making. I don't like this every year stuff. That'd be to me if I tweeted this a few weeks ago be if Jason Jason, when the Commissioner baseball, I'd make universal, get rid of the divisions now get rid of the unbalanced schedule in the top. Sixteen make the playoffs. In I two teams get a bye three play six for place. Five in three game series. Your NLD you're, you're LDS a five-game your CSM World Series or seven game series, but the the interleague stuff in the changing roles. I don't. I don't like it, but if you want me to keep interleague play around, I really like the idea of visiting team brings they're hitting rules. Yeah, I have been a long staunch opponent. Of bringing the DA ch- to the National League and I've finally come around, I, you know, I finally gotten to the point where it is not about like people complain all the time. We'll pitchers get hurt hitting, you know, at pitchers, get hurt doing anything. So that to me isn't a viable excuse for me. It's the rules need to be the same for every team in in both leagues. It just makes no sense. The only sport that I know of that there are different rules for different conferences and then, and that's ridiculous. It's time that we let go of this. Obviously, I would prefer personally to see the go away in both leagues, but that's not gonna happen. So let's be been nice talking with. You will talk to you later. I mean, I like I like pitchers hitting. I, I think there's more there's more strategy. There's more man at enga- managing when you have to double switch and hit for a pitcher and things like that. So I prefer that and I'm a giants fan, some nationally guy. But at the end of the day, the rules need to be uniform for for both sides. So it's it's ridiculous that you can have a seven game series in in the World Series and have to switch back and forth between rules. All right, let's I'll get off my soapbox there and let's move onto a little bit of Rae's corner..

"I do always have a reason a lot of things that i do and there might be an underlying backstory but that's i mean aren't we all know nurse assist will utilize your weakness and they see in you it's not it's not like a defined weakness it's just what they think is a weakness in your personality to get whatever they want you do that jason you're good at that you are i'm trying not to do that in a manipulative way i'm trying to do it to reach a positive outcome for yourself manipulator narcissist will manipulate they'll degrade you they'll use your weakness against you to add more power to their personality if that narcissists does you a favor you've pretty much sold your soul to the devil because you'll oh them forever and you just like katie i gave you a copy here's the difference i try to give her a compliment a damn cupcakes so she's not so mean to me all the time bribing exponent i'm grateful for the cupcake i'm very grateful have that in a minute but there have been several times in my life where i bring in things for the whole show at i've never liked but i brought you this one too because usually i'm not attacking you all the time a nurse assists here's a sign if you are one or dating one they don't recognize or accept your feelings their feelings are the only ones that matter jason sounds like they're not gonna like this a narcissist is arrogant yup hey brag and step over anything or anyone along their path to get the things they want we all got something right okay another sign that you're a narcissist dating one they require constant admiration or at meaning that when attention is no longer available they move onto another person so it's almost like they're using in a way because i noticed that recently it's kind of change because maximum more on edge was a change me and jason buddy buddy yeah jason jason.

"Uh you know he's going he's going to have to go to a camp on a team that you know where he was with the cowboys superpopular iis very comfortable to going to being you know if he's lucky enough to get picked up going to a brand new organization i think you know and i and i do think if i was lucky i would actually use this opportunity a force of i would sue i would try to sue because their act the polices action of not doing their due diligence and make sure they had the right person has really costs lucky his his career and has altered his uh you know altered his future possibly um but as far as lucky goes i think one or two things that lucky should do because you know when you go to jason geared and you listened to what he has to say even after the fact that the cowboys head cut him and then they found out that he really hadn't gotten and into any uh and get into a situation and they had and they had the wrong guy jason geared and a cowboys still stuck by the fact that no they're not gonna re sin release because there was still time to stop lucky from being cut the cowboys did not rescind their waiver uh and as a matter of fact jason jason kerr just said you know we made a decision best for the cowboys and we are moving oon gives a lucky a chance again on with another team and maybe a different situation.
