Investigators say horwitz use the money to pay other investors and by a six million dollar house. In beverly would. Horwitz has been charged with wire fraud. If convicted he could get up to twenty years in prison. This one is relatively current. Definitely showed up on many timelines on my internet because it involved an actor and a ponzi scheme. And i think we both like swindled. Sure your little white collar crime mo for for the most part and this is how an actor a relatively unknown actor which is makes a story exciting scammed a lot of people for a lot of money and the examples he used are baffling to me. That's what makes it so interesting. And i'm going to get to that part baby. So zach horowitz who you may or may not know as zach. Avery and you've seen a lot of. I'm be pages. I wonder if human brains are capable of original thought roof. We can only think in terms of permutations of things. We've actually experienced all. I love this. It's getting real existential. In the case of machines and artificial intelligence would hardware count as a body. I think we need to sit down around a campfire with zevon and really have look at the things i learned today. So we're gonna be talking about the police conspiracy today. Pleaded starts as a kind of vintage video gamer urban legend in the two thousands. It's described as being literally addictive with lines forming around the machines and fights erupting over. Who had played next. "The cia as outdoor secret. I'm rebecca leave. I'm jason horton and this is a ghost town. Cryptos sculpture located on the grounds of cia headquarters created by sculptor. Jim sanborn installed in nineteen ninety. This thousands of characters they contain encrypted messages in four sections three have been solved. The fourth section consists of ninety seven characters which remains on solved. This is cryptos. i love. I love this one. I find something to be so interesting. Can you imagine being the person hired to create the sculpture. And how much goes into it and how indicative it is of the mystery that surrounds the cia. Looked pretty much everything else. It's incredible especially because it's under lock and key very secretive. It's all hush hush but right in the front right there. It's there for really anyone to try to crack this code and they've been cracking the code since it's been installed only when you solve all four sections can you solve cristos. I again just the idea of having a coded sculpture outside. The cia is so fucking cool. I love it so much. I love the people probably work for such a long time to crack each quadrant. But of course want remains unsolved. That's for you listener. You're just solve a real quick when you have a minutes to let us know jim. Sanborn worked with the employees ed. She'd from pronouncing that right to come up with the cryptographic systems on the sculpture. It's twelve foot high. It's made of copper granite and wood and it kind of looks. I kind of almost a computer paper kind of woven. It looks really cool and it just has a bunch of rando letters. Sorry to get technical everybody. That's what's on there and each section is separate and how you decide how you're gonna crack this code is really up to the person trying to do it. And there's been different methods to crack different things. And according to sanborn the sculpture contains a riddle within a riddle which will be solvable. After only all four encrypted passages have been deciphered..

A british journalist asked the small girl next to lewis one question. Who are you. She answered simply. And honestly saying i'm myra jerry's wife he was not yet divorced and mayer brown. Was his thirteen year old cousin. Today we're gonna talk about these seven wives of jerry lewis and there are parts that are obviously really bad. There's bad parts but there's also a testament to this person who's still alive and the time and place of these marriages and these women's stories which i hope is not a ton out there for some of them but you really get a sense of of again like i said at the time and place of things what music was like the culture of of being married to someone like him this highly successful abusive erotic musician. So i just wanna say that before. We even get started. Jerry lewis was a pioneer of rock and roll and rockabilly music. He was known by his concerning nickname at the killer which he used weaponized after a while he was very radic and with threaten many people not just the woman who was married to born in nineteen thirty five and concordia parish louisiana. Lewis began playing piano with his two cousins. Mickey gilley went on to be a popular country music singer. And jimmy swaggart no us pretty economic televangelist of the seventies recognizing his talent lewis. Parents mortgage their farm to buy him his first piano. Lewis started recording in fifties and memphis with his nineteen fifty seven. Hit whole lot of shaking going on making him. Essentially a star breakout star. He followed that song. Great balls of fire also incredibly famous breathless in highschool confidential. I grew up listening to him on the oldies channel. In my town's radio you'd hear it all the time soundtracks to things he again as someone who grew up in essentially the ninety s it was still such a big part of my musical childhood after marrying his second wife his thirteen year old cousin which we will get to to a little bit more in debt after marrying his second wife like we talked about his thirteen year old cousin. He didn't do much. In the nineteen sixties his performances were getting more erratic wildly energetic insane. Dude lots of things that will also get into you. Went full country at the end of the nineteen sixties and was known for covering classics and kind of a country style by twenty ten. He had a dozen gold records in both rock and country. He had forgotten me awards including a grammy lifetime achievement award and two grammy hall of fame awards in nineteen eighty six. He was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame..

"Nineteen fifty nine. The bodies of ten young students experienced hikers and skiers were found in bizarre and puzzling ways strewn over a forested mountain tap. Their deaths would remain a mystery until a week ago. I kid you not. This is the story of the die off pass so again starts in one thousand nine hundred fifty nine. There's a group of early twenty somethings. They're all in their early twenties from like twenty two twenty three to one thirty eight year old outlier to kind of lead them has a little bit more experience under his belt. And they all study at the euro polytechnical institute and it was an organized skiing expedition across the euro mountains in the soviet union. Eager deitz lov. Three year old radio engineer was kind of the leader who assembled everybody asking nine of his college friends. Eight men and two women to join up again. I'm sorry if i mispronounced names. I'm bound to do that. Even deitz love pass. Was his stretch for me so again. Apologies in any case. All of them were experienced great to hikers with lots of skiing experience. Also it was kind of going to be a high scoring hybrid trip. And when they returned all of them would be receiving their grade three hiking certification which is really impressive. It was the highest certification available in the soviet union and required candidates to climb over a hundred ninety miles. The route was designed by dight loves group to reach the far northern regions of spurred lofts oblast and approved by the sverdlovsk city. Route commission even though it was supposed to be the most difficult time to take that route. The goal of the expedition was to reach a tort in our which is a six point. Two mile high mountain semi-in terry of who is previously certified to go with another expedition of similar difficulty. Decided to go with the dice. Love group on twenty third of january nineteen fifty-nine semyon Law of yuri. D'oro anco ludmila duhniah yuri christmas chanko alexandra Love tov is a nedia. Colomer dorota rustam slobodan nikolai thebault bre goals alexander and your yudin all left on their expedition. The group arrive by train at dell small town in the middle of spare lofts ups done two days later then. They all took a truck to his high where they bought a bunch of bread and carb loaded for the next day's start when the actual hike would begin as they hiked one. Member your yudin. Who suffered from several health ailments. He had rheumatism. And a congenial heart defect decided to turn back his knees and joints for giving him a pretty hard time. It would be a decision that saved his life on january thirty first. The group arrive at the edge of a highland area and began to prepare for climbing. They secured food and equipment. There that would be used for when they would come back through the next day. The ten plan to get over the pass and make camp for the next night on the opposite side but bad conditions snowstorms and decreasing visibility. Made them lose their direction and push the group more west than they had planned when they realized that they were more west than they should be. Group decided to just set up camp right on the slope of the mountain rather than move a couple of miles downhill to a forested area. Which would have offered a little bit of shelter from the weather. Diaries and cameras founder on their last campsite possible to track the group's route up until this point which is really a really profound part of the story to see their writing and to see the pictures they had a camera. The film was developed after the fact so it feels very very spooky in that way and they're all so young and very positive and optimistic and really excited about each other. And the you know exploring the mountaintop the group had so much ahead of them and they talk about what they were studying and how that was significant to this expedition but unfortunately that night would be the last day that they would all be alive before leaving on the expedition. Dight love told the university sports club he would send telegram no later than february twelfth on the twelfth passed and no messages have been received there was no immediate reaction because it was pretty normal to encounter delays etc but on february twentieth. Travelers relatives demanded a rescue operation. And the head of the institute sent the first rescue groups consisting of volunteer students and teachers

That i would have absolutely been part of and i could see myself in this specific time and place just before midnight austin police department officer troy gay was patrolling the area. He noticed smoke rising up from the strip mall. Gear reported as a fire and firefighters soon arrived on the scene as they were extinguishing the blaze. They saw it wasn't just a fire. It was a murder scene jennifer. Sarah amy elisa were dead. All of the girls were naked bound gagged with their own clothing jennifer. Sarah eliza were found deep in the store and a kind of supply closet clustered into one corner allies. And sarah were stacked on top of each other while jennifer lay close by legs were spread wide open. One body had an ice cream scoop placed on it. They were all shot in the back of the head. Execution style with a twenty two lead bullet. Sarah's hands have been tied behind her with a pair of underwear that she had also been gagged with and she was raped. Jennifer was not bound but her hands behind her back. Elisa have been gagged in her hands were also tied behind her their bodies were burned almost beyond recognition with napkins and other flammable items from around the shop on top of them clearly used to help burn their bodies. They also doused and lighter fluid. The fire was so bad in the room. Austin reporter. Dick ellis recounts the melted. The top rungs of a heavy aluminum ladder in the back of the store. Amy's body was discovered alone in a room closer to the main dining area. She was not as hard as friends but she received second and third degree burns on twenty five to thirty percent of her body. She was found with a sock like cloth around her neck. She had been raped shot similarly to the others but the bullet had missed her brain. She had a second bullet which did go through her brain hitting her cheek and exiting through her jaw based on the patterns in the rooms. Killer may have stacked all four bodies on top of each other but amy had pulled herself off and managed to crawl out to a different part of the store. There was five hundred and forty dollars missing from the store itself. Police also deduced. The two guns had been used to commit the murder suggesting there were multiple killers in the days. After i mean everyone was obviously incredibly upset but of course a lot of cases that we talk about lots of mistakes were made and lots of people were suspects. The police department had over three hundred suspects initially and lots of false confessions right out the gate. The i suspect was a fifteen year old maurice pierce who was caught with a twenty two handgun in north crest mall the same night as the murderers. The same gun used to kill at least one of them. Eight days later he was brought in although he initially promising information after tough questioning detectives decided maurice was trying to get himself out of a gun charge and eliminated him and his three friends that he had implicated. Michael scott roberts springsteen forrest wellborn. All of them were under seventeen. When pierce's gun was tested. The ballistic showed it didn't match the murder weapon. Also fingerprints and hair collected from the crime. Seed didn't match any of the four teens. Eventually the investigators just moved on still austin looked feverishly around for the person or people who could have done such a terrible thing

And i've gotten very invested in the people anything xactly. There's a little more investment in the us during the podcast and the people listening as compared to some of the other ones that are you know. Look just a little more informative little more like breaking down things news which i love and if i started chatting i'd be like wait. New york's elite society. They were listed in the new york city social register and enjoyed pretty much every privilege. One might have in new york at the time as a teenager. Dorothy went to velten school for girls which was a private school in the upper west side preparing rich new york. Young ladies for fancy women's colleges which is exactly what dorothy did. After velten she went. To bryn mawr college where she got a degree in literature and language. Dorothy is greatest. Passion or dream was really to become a writer so when she graduated in nineteen zero five. Dorothy move back into her parents home and got to it naturally. Her parents were more focused on her getting married and less thrilled that she wasn't doing that and wanted to write in the spring of nineteen ten. Dorothy submitted. a short story to mcclure's magazine. It was rejected and dorothy family. Pretty much like tore her a new one very very mean very maybe appropriate for the time but just like a lot of really bad ridicule for someone who again as a woman wouldn't of had an easy time in that career to begin with dorothy to her credit refocused and double down on her budding writing career of setting up a po box to secretly correspond with publishers and avoid her family's scrutiny around writing. Dorothy also asked her father if she can get an apartment in greenwich village so she could concentrate on improving her writing but he rejected that idea. Very quickly quote. A good writer can write anywhere. He said sure that fall. Dorothy submitted another story to mcclure's which also was rejected. She was pretty upset about the second failure. And when she disclosed the news to her friends and family again they were really really harsh and teased her and judged her for it. On december twelfth nineteen ten. Dorothy told her mother she was going out to buy. Address versus marjorie is coming out party. Debutante ball thing. According to the arnold family dorothy with had approximately twenty five to thirty dollars cash in her possession which is around seven hundred dollars today. Give or take. I'm not great with conversions. But it's a fair amount of money. She wore a tailor-made blue coat. A straight cut skirt and an ornate. Black velvet hat adorned with two white roses and a pale blue lining. She carried a large fox. Muffed warm her preparing her for the cold new york afternoon. So very get very upscale very fashionable very very moneyed daugherty's mother offered to go with but she declined her mother was ill. Dorothy was fine going alone. She said goodbye and walked out of her house. Dorothy i stopped at park until ford store on fifth avenue where she bought a box of chocolates. She then walked to burn tahoe's bookstore where she bought a book of humorous essays. Called engaged girl sketches by. Emily calvin blake. She left brittan oser on two pm. Ran into a friend. Gladys king gladys. Dorothy appeared. Happy that she seemed genuinely said from marjorie his debutante party gladys had to go meet her mom at the waldorf-astoria because of course she did and dorothy told gladys that she was going to take a walk through central park king last saw arnold twenty seven th street shortly before two pm where she turned to a goodbye for a second time again. She seemed really happy. Normal cordial social as one newspaper remarked. She disappeared from one of the busiest streets on earth at the sunniest our brilliant afternoon with thousands within sight and breach men and women who knew her on every side officers the law thickly strewn about her path.
