riddles on Bloomberg radio I'm Barry Rudolph you're listening to master's business on Bloomberg radio My extra special guest this week is doctor Mark Mobius He is the founding partner of Mobius capital prior to that he worked at Franklin templeton investments for more than 30 years Where he was chairman of the templeton emerging markets group where he helped expand their assets from a 100 million to over 50 billion So let's talk a little bit about traveling to different countries and hunting down specific companies What do you recall as a particularly spectacular investment that you discovered after traveling to a country and were just really surprised by what you found researching a company Probably the best example was in China that was when we discovered a company that in China that made the gears for wind power companies It's about 15 years ago That's when the whole area of wind power was coming up strong And this company was doing incredible work We visited the factory and I noticed that the machine tools they were making were top notch automated machine tools And they were doing very high quality work according to their customers So we decided we'd invest in that company and that turned out to be an incredibly investment with double triple price we paid So that was probably one good example of doing on the ground research and finding something that other people are not noticing And by the way I think that's one of the features of good investing is finding something that other people are not defining In other words try to discover a company that has not been yet so called discovered by the market What about the opposite Did you ever show up somewhere excited about a specific company And only to discover hey this isn't what we were hoping for Many times And of course many times we will fool by the information we are getting and very missteps along the way It is the feature of investing anyway as you know but the emerging markets you have to be special and be very very extra careful So when you started doing this in the late 80s was anyone else from the United States or other U.S. investment firms actually traveling the world looking at companies you sort of the Indiana Jones of this how long did it take for other investment firms to say hey we need an EM or a developed ex U.S. fund and we need someone like Mobius out kick in the tires They took about 5 years for the field to grow where once they saw the results that we were getting a lot of people began to jump on the bag like and you must remember that the pioneer on this was the IFC the international finance corporation They started emerging markets in social funds about a similarly than we started our fund So they were on that as you know they were the precursor to the index because there's capital international they were the people that were doing researches of companies all around the world So you started venturing into Africa way earlier than just about everybody else what led you to discover that continent and how have the results been Well you know as the assets expanded we really had to find new opportunities everywhere And Africa was wide open There was so much there And of course the initial business there really excited us because we realized this is ground that has not been told in any direction lots of opportunities where there is no information which is an advantage because if you are on the ground if you're able to travel these places and get information then you have an edge on the any competitive ones to come in So I saw a tremendous opportunity in places like South Africa in Nigeria In Kenya and of course Africa is so huge There are so many countries that tremendous opportunities Of course the big challenge was to find an equity market as stock market And liquidity of course one of the biggest challenges you get of course is.

"And andy martinez and guys. We've really seeing the cubs. Play the role of spoiler lately eh. one eight of their last night. They had that pretty epic. Seven game win streak. That was really on. The backs of french wendell's clutch hits. But bruce i'll start with you as we look at this team and playing the role of spoiler. We heard jason heyward say wednesday night. How much fun. It is to play that role to be teams. That are really have to win to get into the playoffs roost. What is your take on that in. Just i don't want to say the lack of pressure because there's always a little bit of inherent pressure in playing the big leagues but to be this role where you don't have a ton on your shoulders you get to go out and just have fun and play free. Well that's the good news and the bad news right. The good news is is that you are seeing a bunch of guys that are just playing ball and and enjoying playing together and people getting in the first opportunity extended time on the field. Like the swindles. Like the wisdom's like your tegas to guard their show that they're very good professional ballplayers and Not having to look over their shoulders to see one the manager is going to take him out or if they're gonna put him back in against their starting ball players in the major leagues with the chicago cubs. One of the story franchises in baseball. And they are absorbing it and taking every advantage in the world with it but with that comes e reality that There is that weight offers shoulders of people because of the fact that you're not expected to win. You're not playing for anything. Other than being a spoiler however you are playing for the a for the remainder of your career and trying to impress people that you are an everyday player in the big leagues in the east should be respected in that mode. So from at all I think cub fans should be really enjoying this looking forward to these guys continuing to make an impact of this last month of the season. The great unknown is still out there. Beyond the what happens after the season with this group idia i know before will really after the trade deadline Have talked about how at some point. We could see this cubs team relaxing. Playing the role of spoiler I don't think we ever really expected this. I don't want to speak for you here. But winning eight of nine to three against a good team You know i i know. The twins in pirates are towards the bottom of their divisions as well. But just what if what is your take away. Any of looking at the way the cubs have played. Just what is impressed. You the most watching these last this last week and a half or so in the season. Be thinking andy. Green at A couple of days ago he said you know these guys never quit You know there are always putting up there at bats in the night It just wasn't noticed because some of those games you know. They're down thirteen to three and then you know they end up losing thirteen to seven. And you don't score four runs in the ninth..

"Everybody was distracted. I don't know why probably because the all star but also very clue is really close. Tomorrow is the last game of, uh Of the first half. And I don't think that way. But, um I don't think we were on today really hard, special Leave. You want to win. You want to fight for for anything that that is in your control. Also, we are have to understand that business of team effort. I'm just gonna keep doing my job. The way I played, it is not going to change. Uh, does on everybody's, uh, work ethic and and job. We had to. We had to tune but also I can No cannot, um Ask everybody to play like I do or to play to play like like bison. I play everybody is different and not the they might be tired, But I mean, I'm here to win. I'm here to win. I'm here to compete, and that's what I like to have from from everybody else. We have an attack starts right now. I think we had to be turning around. But like I said, tougher, it's not. It's not individual for. I think the biggest thing that I took away from that. Or the biggest question I took away from that was When you single out yourself and Harvey What are you saying about Kris Bryant. And what are you saying about Anthony? Result? And what are you saying about Nico Horner? What are you saying about Ian happ, everybody. And what about Jason Heyward? What about like, Say what you want about J. Hey, he's having a terrible year. Statistically, I think he's always playing hard. Is it? Is it the outward emotion that he's talking about that Javi and Wilson are always running a little bit hot. Do you know what I mean? And and when they they are pissed when they they show the emotion that maybe some of the other guys don't outward. There's no doubt that I mean, I agree with that. Contreras plays hard. I don't believe there's another catcher in Major league baseball that has caught the number of games nor the number of innings that Wilson could. Tourist has caught your right and I think that Willie plays the game exceptionally hard when you start to When you start to focus on yourself and separate yourself from the rest of the team. You're you're you're treading in dangerous water as far as I'm concerned. Like and I would hope that If he's going to make these comments publicly, he made these comments privately to his teammates prior to making them publicly. I think you're always better off suggesting, you know, Speak of yourself. But don't talk about anybody else, Right? Like when you seclude yourself as playing heart legs are different than the other guys. What are you saying about the other guys? Kris Bryant has also reacted to this. I have not. I do not see this and I'll tell you why. David Ross also wasn't happy with Willson Contreras. I think the answer is pretty obvious. But Cubs fans what did you think about what Willson Contreras said. "About knee high. Sonny's got that come back fastball working already. Normally when a pitcher comes back off the injured list. You don't see them being able to shave the edges as we're seeing Sonny due here early. Here's Jason Heyward with a runner on at first. Now two outs. They were to 1 94 hitter with five homers in 14 batted end. Left handed hitter, right handed pitcher. Here it comes. Strike one right on the inside corner with a good fastball, Nothing and one on Hayward. With Sonny Gray. He started the year on the injured list, and after he came back and took my man, he said, This time he was able to keep throwing the entire way. He never really needed to take a break. So now he's coming out much stronger. I think we've talked about it up here and David Bell kind of echoed it today that that almost could serve as a blessing in disguise. Here's the pitch breaking ball outside the count is even one and one just a way to How to manage the workload for him. As you get deeper into the season. That's every picture. You know, The one of the big talking points of this season is responding off 60 games. You know, the Reds pitching staff has had their stuff to deal with, but parents would say the Cardinals and the cups are going through. It's not a good place. Here's the 11 and a swinging themis good curveball in the dirt Hayward right over top of it, and he's down to the counter ball and two strikes. Going back to Suarez. Did he talk about How he cut his finger. And what what happened there? One of his favorite off the activities is barbecue.

Let's hold this for a take that later cream coming here, guys said Nasty Shino the playbook. I don't with it in the mornings back. Don't tell Don't accusing Chris Holt. I'm not using that playbook. Where's fully Sorry. I'm just saying saying is you can look to get like a lot of always says you could have two of the things convene True. The white sex could be in first place and be great, but they could have a bad manager agree, And that's why that's why I'm preemptively telling you. You can't preemptively told me to take that in the future. That is because I don't like LaRussa. Yeah. So I'm with you on that. I just I'm not. I'm not as outraged because they're playing really good baseball. And I think Giolito was fantastic the other day, and I'm looking at Mercedes and ways doing with the bat and all this different stuff. And I'm saying, that's what I'm focusing on. Right. That's the macro The micro is is you watch the game against the Twins and Tony Condones the other team. Ridiculous. Yeah, right. That's what I'll be when you guys boy. We haven't yesterday that there is not Problem because of the trip yesterday If these guys would have left the clubhouse heads down, they're still all mad People still of the you know, defending your mean and all that kind of stuff. They got to go through. All this Bs again is different, but they left. You gotta look to the drip. You gotta look to the vibes. I watched all the instagram videos last night have good vibes in Tony's walking through the instagram live and he doesn't know what the hell's going on. I don't know what happened. It was like, Look, he's smiling and he's a joint. You look together. It was like an uncomfortable laugh. Every parent on Tic tac, they don't know what the hell is going on that video again As long as you keep winning, Are you videoconference? 26 16, and you're leading the division by two or three games. You also can't take the ostrich approach and just put your head in the sand and say to yourself that this may not rear its ugly head. That's what I'm saying to you Can I can I share the contract for you to be too sensitive in there? I'm not calling us oxygen. You are being a little sensitive. What I'm saying about the ostrich. You could be all sensitive all you want about the lazy comment. Ostrich comment. You can't look at this Dude. Ostriches will beat the crowd. They're angry birds, very angry, already angry. It's a compliment, bump and use their and their violence. Shame that there's no sports teams that have an ostrich as a logo. OK, that's true. This is what I would say to you, the vibe of the team and the what was the one question we always talked about at the start of the season? Would he be able to connect with this group of talented players that play with a new style and play with energy? And that was a question, I think was valid Question. Right now, you've got Tony saying one thing and Lance Lynn and Ta san. Another thing so You are getting mixed messages from the same team. It's fine because they're 26 16. I've just said, Keep an eye on it. Keep an eye on everything that you say is is like, Look I Tony's the Hall of Fame manager. All of a manager that should have known better with regard to window pole Giolito or should have known better toe. Leave Billy Hamilton in at a certain spot, Or should I say this to steal or that another rule book? Yes, I mean, so these air again these This is kind of my female life. More than one thing can be true at the same time, and we should all be able to process more than one concept that want my argument with Chris is just these three I get. I agree there that all the metrics show. They're a good team. I don't believe there's a metric out there that shows he's a good manager, and I think it's a late. It's not that I've heard it from other people, too, that it's lazy. Just to look at the record and say, Well, all's good because they're winning. And let me tell you the matted story, Okay, because that's why I want to get too. For all the people think that this is a Cubs or Sox thing. The untold story Or maybe it is told I forget it. Verducci wrote this, But I know this is fact. Okay, and it will come out one day publicly where people will be willing to speak on the record about this. That the greatest moment in Cubs history and the 17 minute rain delay was much different than the mythical Rah rah players on Lee speech that you may have heard about. So we all know this. The Cubs give up that big run. Raja Davis hits the home run. I'm flipping off Waddle because he told me that we'd get the best of the Indians and Chapman will be fine. You did. And so I think my dreams they're gonna fall apart here. I came so close. I'm in Cleveland. I'm despondent. My wife jinx the Cubs. She's counting down hatch out, she said. There were four outs left when there were five outs and then that's when the home run happened. It was just a mess. So the story goes that during the rain delay the 17 minute rain delay that came at the perfect time just short enough to meet guys in the weight room, and it's like in Jason Heyward gathered, it called it The untold story about this gathering is it was a basically a blank Joe Maddon gathering. It was more than just Let's go out. We've worked too hard. This was guys Despite what he's done in this game. Despite what he did the cow Hendricks despite what he did to John Laster, despite what he did to wear out, Chapman before this moment, we don't play for him. We play for us, and as players we can overcome this, and it sort of reminds with white socks on what they're doing. They have like the drip. You're talking about a dollar that they have this really good vibe around each other. They like each other. They liked being together the Cubs in that short term moment very short. And one day a player will come out and talk about the real thing that happened behind closed doors. And if you remember while we were getting into big debates about it, Joe waiting in spite of Joe Maddon and I love Joe, but but he screwed up in a lot of the area there, and the Cubs actually used him in that famous gathering in Cleveland. To rally against their manner manager and rally together as a team to win the world Syria's and that is I don't know. Like his Paul Harvey would say that is the rest of the story. Well and again. What Giolito said. What was the quote Giolito most recently had about We were all behind Mercedes, keep hitting home runs. We're all good with him. It wasn't like I mean, he made it. In my opinion, my interpretation. It was appointed comment that inside the four walls of this clubhouse We're supporting each other where we're a tight knit by suggesting to you that they're pushing and shoving and fighting with their manager. I'm just telling you that there are certain things that do occur that bring teams together like the moment that you just mentioned. And Like Right now this the winds it they're back. It Z blue skies and sunshine and it should be look yesterday was brilliant..

How A Tragedy Sparked Change In MLB Ballparks
"So how can you take us back to May twenty ninth. Yeah it was. It's just a regular season game cubs astros welcome back inside minute maid park cubs in Astros. Wrap up in interleague interleague set. Those are two teams loaded with talent and at times it felt playoff light because there were some great swings in the Game Schwarzer pretty well let center and then this terrible incident involving a two year old happens happens in the fourth inning. Now more is up too bad Albert Bell Morale who's been struggling for a while and I think he was just starting to find his footing On the season he's been really good for the better part of a month. Now pulled down the left field line. I just happened to be seeing exactly what happened. That moment I followed the ball off the crack of the bat. I saw the ball strike a fan. Can you hear this scream. You saw what was really chilling was how it went silent. You hear others around them. MM screaming I heard someone call for their dad. saw man run up the stairs clutching would I believed at the time was his daughter and the rest of his family scurry up the stairs with him and it was a tough moment as a reporter to watch that it had shaken everyone in that ballpark. Once we kind of understood that a young child had been struck with the foul ball and in the immediate aftermath. What did we know about the girl who was hit? She's you know a toddler a very young baby. There was very little information given about what happened to her. There are varying reports. It's about how she was doing in the media aftermath any updates that we've seen or heard have have kind of come through secondhand information. Why that isn't isn't nobody really knows but obviously it's their right to to have that privacy and and try and deal with the situation on their own? Do you remember where she was sitting. I'd say a little little past third base just beyond the dugout and that's about where the netting ends usually most ballparks the Nettie goes above the dugout all the way down to the edge of the dugout and the line drive just got cast that knitting. And can you just describe for people who just to visualize how you're getting a ninety mile an hour fastball. And and you're fouling that off. How quickly that's getting into the stands? That's a split second. It was one of those things it was a low line drive. Nepal can be you know. Crushed it a hundred route ten miles per hour if you take your eye off of it for a split second. It's impossible to get out of the way of a ball that's heading straight for you and then if it skips off a railing if it skips off seat the best athletes when it takes a bad hop can always feel it cleanly i. I can't imagine just someone sitting in that seat is going to be able to react properly and get out of the way of that ball and so it sounds like there are a couple of moments that really stuck with you from this incident and was Albert Al.. Moore's reaction after the the play. Yeah Albert told us after the game that he followed that ball and he saw it. Strike the girl immediately. He went to the ground over for more junior. saw that line drive to the crowd and that was not a good moment. This is gonNA take a little while to regroup. Just covered his face ace with his hands. He was shaken clearly. Stay down for a while. Jason Heyward he immediately came to Albert's side and kind of consoled him soon enough Joe Madden came to his side was whispering in his ear trying to calm him down letting him know that. This isn't his fault the game stop for for me. It seemed like a very long time. It was probably just a few minutes. It seemed like a really long time. And that's rare in baseball where you just stop a game like that for ball. Eventually he was consoled he came back up to the plate play restarted and it was one pitch to and to on our moral swings and misses for strike three. It wasn't close to the plate and he just flailed at it and then headed back to the dugout and then he tries to get an update on the girl's condition a half inning later. This was another moment that really I think shook everyone. He walked over to that side of the field. Right in front of of of the stands and started started talking to some fans and they pointed to a security guard the security guard it came over to him whispered something in his ears and he started to break down crying again. We do not have any update Albert visibly shaken. Eventually we learned that the child was at least talking and and awake when they left. I think that kind of comforted Albert. He was able to fully release all that emotion and that you know very visible reaction that no more had continued through the game obviously and then to the post game press conference and he was very he was still very shaken in in the clubhouse. It's one of those moments as a reporter where it's really tough you. You know you have to talk to the guy but it's also clear that he doesn't have a lot to say he's he's still shaken by it. As a survey hit the first person I locked eyes was hurt so obviously I want that to happen an intent for that to happen the rest was kind of a blur the rest of that bat. And I'm I'm I'm speechless and lost words. All he could think about was protecting that young girl. I WANNA put a letter on the host stadium
