"And I think I'll let you recover from that incredible impersonation. I think that that's how you're dealing with pictures like there's just gonna find the sticky stuff. It's just life's gonna find a way. It's like Jurassic Park, darn it. You didn't like that impression? Kevin, he laughed at me, so that's a terrible. That's the worst I've ever heard. And it was like, oh, yeah. I think I just whipped it on his podcast. Well, but Kevin also says OPS apps. So like, I don't know. We have some questionable takes over there. Well, again, I'm sure this will be another thing that we kind of watch over. The course of the off season one we're not trying to bang our heads against the wall with the CBA negotiations, but the spin. It's back. In his back, here we are. I appreciate rob doing such good work on the sticky stuff as it were. Okay, now we're going to start transitioning into more playoff related topics, although we will broaden them out. And the first is we are recording this on Wednesday afternoon. So it is before the game 5 of the ALCS in game four of the NLCS in last night's game four of the ALCS one of the moments that spurt controversy concerned laz Diaz's strike zone. Did you engage with this game? Do you watch AL baseball after your team is out of angry? Do you know what's going on? Generally I do. Generally I do. I really do watch every ALCS game every NLCS game, even when the Giants aren't involved. Unless it's the warrior season opener, so I didn't watch all of the Astros in all of the Red Sox. I did like I had a second screen up, so I guess I was watching it, but I wasn't listening. I will say that among us could have foreseen Las Diaz's strike zone being bad. Wow, that blows me away. But in general, like, yeah, I did. Oh boy. So I have a controversial take about this particular question, which is to say that I think that his zone generally was quite poor. Overall, and that might make what I'm about to say seem silly because it suggests that he just committed another error rather than having sort of a defensible position about the particular pitch he was calling. I think that this call was, I think it was fine. I appreciate, and here I should say, because our listeners are probably saying, but Meg, there were there were so many bad calls. What possible that call could you mean? And here I'm talking specifically about what could have been strike three to Jason Castro in the 9th inning, but ended up being ball two as we all remember Castro then singled to break a tie in the 9th and the Astros went on to score 7 runs in that inning and ultimately beat the Red Sox. I thought that this was a close, it was close, you know? That is a robo zone, strike, most certainly. And I can totally appreciate why. If you had called it a strike and punched and Castro had punched out it would have been like, yeah, it was a strikeout. But in watching it, it was like, this is the exact perfect kind of pitch that when we have the robo zone is going to piss at least some portion of the population off, right? Because it is right there, like 60% of it is in one part and 40 in the other. So I thought that this was fine. This is a big moment and that's why we care, but it is not an inherently crazy pitch to have called a ball, but I guess we have talked about this at several points over the course of the pod there have been many solutions offered. We will end up with a robo zone. But when we have one, like, will you miss calls like this being borderline? Do you think there should be some amount of discretion and judgment here or are you sitting there going Nash teeth? This is ridiculous. I will say like I come from, I grew up listening to my Cuoco. And he would always say, listen, as long as it's consistent, that is all you want. Looking at the strike zone from last year's I'm looking at the plot. And to the left handed batters or the right handed batteries I should say, the outside part of the zone was incredibly consistent all game long. He missed, you know, maybe two of the strikes that he was calling all night, but in general, if you could pepper that outside part of the zone, he would give it to you, regardless of which team you're on. And that doesn't make me Nash teeth. It's annoying. It's not something I like. And I kind of am still on team robo, just because baseball has a lot of quirky things to appreciate in a lot of judgment calls and a lot of all sorts of things like that that they'll remain. They'll be in place. And if you just do robo umps, I think it would be fine. But at the same time, I'm willing to overlook a home plate umpires calls when he's consistent at least all night as long as you're like on the correct side of the spectrum of Eric Gregor. I mean, you know, it can't be afoot in the short matter's box. But if it's within reasonable, and I'm looking at the overhead view of the call to Castro and it's like, yeah, it's like a baseball's width. Yeah, that's fine if you're consistent. Right. We were given the suggestion by a listener that instead of there should be a challenge system and you would be limited to a very small number of challenges. But in the challenge system, you will be able to appeal a particular ball or strike call, and they would go to whatever the robo version of the zone is to determine whether or not it was called correctly sort of like a boundary challenge in tennis, I guess. I don't know if that's exactly how you called that thing because I'm not a Thomas person, but I'm given to understand that that is part of tennis. And so that seems like another option here where in this moment, Alex Cora could have said, hey, no, put the headset on. You got to look at that because it's very quick, right?.

"What the real world is, like, Go ahead and do it. But the problem is is when they get slapped in the face and let's just say in the travel ball world you face some kid throwing 73 11 you level and you know it is throwing the ball of the nasty hook and impression. Kids back inside. You gotta show him what that 73 is gonna look like. Right. That's how you prepare the child for the road. So that's been my philosophy. Um, I would say that, you know, sure. I imagine some other parents Um, educators or somebody else might argue with the way I've gone about doing it, but so maybe wrong again. Well, let me ask you this because my my oldest is this first season to play your pitch. Would have been last year. But obviously that didn't happen because well, pandemic on. I would like for him to learn that not every pitch is going to come from the machine or it's going to be grooved. It's not gonna be comfortable, so I'm I'm in agreement with your methods. Here's the problem. I can't hump it up there to 73 anymore. So can I bring my kid up to you? And then you can throw baseballs at him because I physically incapable of doing it and also It absolves me of any. Let's just say no Blood's on my hands so I could come back to my wife and say I didn't do it. Eric Burns did it. Talk to him. Yeah. Got gun, right? I could do that for you. But the problem is just when it comes to baseballs, and you know, throwing him to the DPD, kids everything. So we just got back from attorney in San Diego and we stay. Detroit lost his house. And it doesn't matter if you get this six set up for the cage and everything. And all throw tennis balls all day to the kids, right Like I mean, I'm talking. We call it TV, Cheddar cheese and again, you know, I think I've told you guys that story, but that's how I learned how to play the game of baseball. And then you know, the my neighbor would come over and he would throw the ball. He's the best picture of little baby 12 balls hard you can use like five years older than me. No chance, and eventually a certain tension up to it. So you know, I For whatever reason, I thought I'm like, You know what? It works for me? I'm I will try. My kids are doing it. Of course, much of swings and misses and Whatever else and then eventually search talents him off. And pretty soon you know, he was swearing him up now, every now and again, though, and and just even happened when he was, say five years old. We really started doing this. Of the ball's going to get away from me and it may or may not, You know, square him up in in the dome. So it's a tennis ball, though, so it's not that I don't think you know it's heavy enough to do any permanent damage out. You could do the tennis balls for an extended period of time. And still you know what I'm doing? I'm literally I've offered to throw tennis balls, too. Big leaguers, Brandon Belt and Jason Castor was actually the one I offered it to. Jason Castro, East Big Guy lives up by Ah Caetano and I told them belts in the in the same area and they're not obvious. These guys aren't aren't there full time. So I'm like, Yo, man during quarantine. I'm like I'm going out to throw to my kids. So if you want to get belt and whatever else that, like, let's do this, and I'm not kidding. When I say that it would. It would serve them well, like I would have no problem. Getting 46 ft. Away from him and throwing the ball is as hard as I can. And it basically simulating, you know, I mean, if you look at the actual times and everything, you know 90 MPH fast ball so that that that that all said, you know, with with With the part of balls. It could begin to get a little dangerous, and that's where I smoked my kid the other day, and I'm a little more hesitant to throw the hard balls when I'm throwing hard to other kids. Now, if it's my own kid day, that's right. The blood of the on my hands. But you know, I'm a again a little a little slow to to say yes with the hardball Cheddar cheese as opposed to the tennis ball. Cheddar cheese have to slip you 100. Then we can negotiate from there. Done a guy I got your odd e mean I can still I can still throw 90. I'm just 10 ft away. So you know you just you just keep moving. Closer simulation, right? Exactly. You know what? Something funny. I Look, I'm not. I'm just going to say this because it just happened. S o. Last. That was right when I smoke, my kid that was right before San Diego and he's nine and we're going out. We went played this year 11 you tournament in San Diego. And you know it. Yeah, he did. He did. He did find it all weekend, The voice battle the battle their tails off. This and that. I mean, it was. I can't believe that the games that we got into it was just like, almost like you can't. You can't make this stuff up like that, You know to two games in a row was You know, basically had to load the bases runaround. Serve winning run. You know, our pets player on the mound, you know, strikes the kid out all the drama in the world you could possibly think of every single one. The games we just played and what I told the boys I'm like, I'm like, Look, you know when you go through this stuff You know what this is doing? It's Harding. Them. It is it is. You know, the one kid Jackson climber, by the way, is there named the freaking studs from Fresno and Jax? Was on the mound. Two games in a row where we had to load the bases up, right runner on third, which is the winning run, and then bring the I'd like you to do the five infielders bring him in. Take the two outfielders basically pulled pulled them all the way in and you got eight guys staring at us a hitter like it's intimidating, and there was no other kids. That I would rather have on the mound and that I've ever coached. Then this kid Jack and and he went out there and absolutely ball of almost got out of it both times. Both times he was on the wrong end. Obviously, as a kid like this emotional to these kids, man, right, I get it. There's a lot going on. And you know, as you're developing, 12 year old and then you know, here we are. You know, Coach I put him into this situation. Because the one team was already got the third and so you walk into you put him in this really, really tough situation. What to come out of that, either. Which way? It doesn't matter, Man. Win or lose what we got. There was an experience that I just met with him for the rest of his life was like The more you go in there don't pressure packed sort of situations. And once again, the technology's going across all of life. But you, especially a baseball like that's how you get prepared to come up with the Chidi antic moments with 50,000 people in the stands of millions of watch on TV, new experience them. And so there's no. You know, it's a I've seen all sorts of kind of travel things. Now it's your teams and blow out other teams all the time. And, you know, it seems that get blown out all the time and what you want to do whatever you could do in anything. Try toe. Try to put your kid or ourselves even In competitive situations where those air the experiences that will stick with these kids. Wherever we go. We want tournaments without even like, you know, literally rolling there with a cup of coffee and a cigarette. You know, Like, like a case there is no water maker. Yeah, exactly. 21 Way. One of the Arizona like that. It And typically, it doesn't happen this way. But we did way had we had a freaking squad, but it was it was. It was easy. The boys think anything out of it. Nothing. And then yet we don't We go to something like this this weekend and, ironically We all four games were decided in the last game. One. The one that ended up in our favor that we won was against this team from Arizona. The Summerton met that ended up winning the entire tournament and we were the only team. To act out of 10 teams to beat the summer two Met in the top of that we beat their kids. They call him Loco. Who throws 73 MPH with a nasty hook. So what was the one team that we happen to get the victory against and then we had some battles with these other teams that we just came out on the wrong end? But again, I would rather take.

"The only one I got for you. Is that a player? Their most recent product is actually named Jason Castro on enough funny that the kid out of Castro Valley was named Castro right. He went to Stanford. Them got drafted by the Astros, and I always thought, Oh, that's easy to remember. He also Castro from Castro Valley. He also had a grand slam off us once when they were We were up seven. Nothing in the seventh inning and at one of the biggest meltdowns ever. They came back and scored nine runs with two outs and Castro captain with a grand Slam into center field over over what we called senior park. He was a monster. Dude, that's pretty cool. The way you guys see that the Padres did that yesterday. No joke. They were down 7 to 3. They played one of the few Gezi for the birds. Seven inning. Double headers to Yeah. And they were down seven. Listen to this. 7 to 3 Bottom seven. Hate to even say that bottom seven. I know right away 7 to 3 bottom 72 outs. Nobody on And they scored seven straight runs in and that's why you should be allowed to swing 30, Bro. Yeah, well, that's 7232 outs. That's different. Four runs is different than it was. Seven wasn't seven things might have been seven when he hit the slam might have been like a seven run lead. Bottom 82 out 10 to 3 was attended three bases juiced. Yeah, Again. Just the point is just that you could come back at any point. That's what I'm saying. Well, as you said, this was, I think you know as shyness has continued his breakout run through the Murphy Max show. He was the guy who bridged the gap. It both answers. He said to me. I agree with you. I like the Lawry like the tradition. I like learning from my elders and I like understanding that there are things in this game. That's the right thing to do, He said. However, the game has changed in terms of the ball flying in the launch angle, he said. I'm not so sure. Seven runs is safe anymore and s O. That was he did a nice job of it. Ameliorating arrested. What's the word pacifying Both parties. There s Oh, there you go, Polly, hopefully, water boys not to overwhelm their by the calls from that very chill song that you played there. It's kill. It's it's It's good. It's a little. I don't want to give away the title of the piece yet, but I will will reveal everything in due time, but we're giving away five passes right now and then we'll do. Another five passes Murph later on in the show. So listen. So the Giants lose two in the You know, the good feelings come to an end yesterday and seven inning sucks Bottom line, But Andi, it just wasn't happening offensively yesterday. They didn't score any runs right now. You're game. By the way. Last time they got shut out. I have the stat for you Here, guys, make sure you get this right? The stat for you On the last time they were shut out Herd in both ends of a doubleheader. Ready for this? Yeah, 19. 1930 come on now started. I saved it. I can't find it. Shoot. It was like 1936 in 1939 1 of right now we're just totally totally long blank in time for their alright, So rigatoni Russo or whatever you know, it's been basically 80 years. Shut out in both ends of a double header. Of course in those ones they played nine. So I don't know if you want to count that my hearing. Yeah, Totally. That's a real guy. But for Joey Fart boy, Kershaw just I think it was either Kruger Keiper Miller. Somebody said he just toyed with him. He just toyed with the Bali Our cat in the yard. He just And he's now having trouble with that. A couple of things there. Everybody's pitching in on his hands. That's the word right. He's gonna have to deal with that. That's why he gets hit so much right that the word is. You can't let joy Bart get his arms extended right? And in that back foot slider, you know, coming from the left side that just comes in, and he was just waving at it over 10 with seven strikeouts in the Siri's, So here's Kappler official answer on Joey Barton. Okay, A lot of it has to do with me is gonna make a quick adjustments to Joey and And Joey is always going to need to adjust back. But I think the direct answer questions. He's he's going out the bumps and bruises. He's going to go through a stretch of 15 20 bats that Don't look great. He's gonna struggle behind the plate. He's He's an inexperienced young player that is, goingto take lumps along the way. He's also gonna have Ah lot of successes and he's gonna be really good for a long time. Okay, so that there's a fair analysis very well. There's just very fair. People do tend to overreact. He has become a bad games and people send him down. We were wrong. He doesn't should be. No, no. So here is the question is, Are you going to keep playing him and he's here? We've got to develop. In the interim, though there are going to be some ups and downs were gonna be patient with them. We're going to talk. Talk to him about How he can get better and looked about developed him at every turn. Well so that he can help us win as quickly as possible. And so we get the most out of Joey enjoy gets the most out of himself. Long term. Yeah, so I hope he's playing tonight, right? I'm looking forward to any two. Yeah, yeah, in the same spirit checked in. He's been checking in on a lot of stuff with Samson's A lot of good Howards Sammy dogs. He's doing good. He hears a lot of thoughts. You know, I feel like it's some point. Wherefore do, aren't we? It's It's almost like your right like it's been to. In fact, now that I think about it, have we had him during the panda. Honestly, I don't even know If we've had spent too long. That's my point's been too long. Hey, says Bart will be better for the experience and next year, failures and successes will be part of the maturation period with no minor leagues. He needed to be brought up because there was nothing more to learn in playing interest. Got games in Sacramento to one forces simply though, Yeah, but he has a hole in his swing. Well right now he does, And he's going to have to adjust. Here is capture on Bart's struggling with the inside pitch. Speaking of the whole okay, Yeah, I think they I think Kershaw and in particularly dots is his bread and butter. He's gonna use his slider on Brunnen in on your head. Ends, and then he's gonna He's gonna throw his his curveball is throwing it for strikes and easy and throw it out of the zone. One thing we know about Kershaw's curveballs is usually damages and done on that pitch. It's a pitch that A lot of hitters tried to take it if you're if you're swinging and about pitch and the slider in in the slider in office, it's gonna be a long day for you. I think that that Joey is going to hunt hunt out over. You gonna look for a kid to drive it out over so he can get extended and drive through the baseball. And he's just gonna He's gonna learn opponents repertoires and and how to adjust accordingly. And look, the one thing I'll say is I feel very confidently that are getting coaches. You are gonna work really hard with Joanna. Joey's gonna work justice hard to get him prepared and ready to adjust back. Is it good answers of capital Very actually a lottery. And this is exactly where, Okay, You know, we had all kind of rift on the 13 coaches and see Marja that great line at mine early camp and he said Yes, you know, As soon as we can tell the coaches from the minor league free agents will be fine. You know, it's so funny. But this is where this is where exactly this coaching staff should shine because the kids got all the town in the world. He just has this problem with the inside pitch. Right? So this is where they bring out the binders, Dudes. Your tunnel, You know, don't get your pockets. Bring out your approach actors, you know? Yeah. Yeah, sure. I know for sure We're going to put utilize all that stuff. But also Murph, like thinking back like part has already had to. I think two different injuries on his hand Like he broke his hand. It's a said everything. And he also wasn't a broken finger or D break the hand. I said twice the hand. Yeah, so they still come in on him? Polly everytime like that last night, they came in on him. Two is a little too close. That's got to be in the back of his head to. It's like you don't mind taking inside pitches, but at the same time if you've got a history of broken hands like that's got to be something he's thinking about two in the box like I don't want to take another one off the hand. Man, I agree with you, but I'll say this. There's a lot of panic on the text line at nine. Once about Bart. What scares me is the hole is huge, and he's swinging at balls their way inside. He looks amateurish at times..

"I'm starting to get the fields for I'm starting to get the A smurfing back with him started Get the pangs start to feel the The encroaching baseball season. It could be fun man. It could be some fun. It could be weird could be a scope into what the Giants are doing in the future. By the way, an update little bit they signed. What's that kid's name? Kyle Harrison. The left handed pitcher out of the daily He finally reached an agreement yesterday. He was the number 85 overall pick in the draft about a month ago. Right early June is that when that happened, left handed pitcher was committed to you and was heavily committed. I think they thought that if he was not drafted his eyes he was he probably was not going to go play professional baseball. This is what some of these teams deal with is You got a kid who's committed? You want to draft him? But if you draft into high, you wasted draft pick on a guy. I'm telling this story like third. Third person through the grapevine third degrees of three degrees away four degrees away. Tyson Ross played played high school baseball out here in Oakland at Bishop O'Dowd, his brother, Joe Ross, do Gerard Washington National. He's opted out of the season. I don't think Tyson Ross had been picked up since the Giants let him go. Bottom line. Tyson was when I was a sophomore in high school. He was a senior. He wa I want to see he came in second for M V P of the jail. The Hayward area athletically thatyou're because Jason Castro, I think when the VP. Now Castro went down Stanford They went super Regional. He was a monster. And then and then, actually, Jason Castro made it all the way to the big leagues and made the final out of Matt Cain's perfect game. He sees every day on a decent career that I think is a Minnesota twin. Now was an Astro for awhile. He's bounced around, but he was he was a good player, Castro Valley High But bottom line is is both of these guys. That sort of applies to I want to say that Tyson Ross had already committed to cow by the time scouts. We're talking about the major league draft, and I think both of his parents are our teachers or take education very seriously, And I kind of told him like he's going to school. He's not gonna go play baseball till after he's done with school again. I'm hearing this. I'm sure there are people out there who know the Rosses and I'm Telling you this story like four degrees away from people who I know who know him who know people who know people who know people but Jason Castro. Same thing. He might have been taken much higher out of high school. I want to see the red sides drafted him, unlike the 25th round or 30th rounds. I'm like that, but he's already committed to Stanford. They knew he was going to go play ball there and he comes out in his a first round. Draft picks. So Kyle Harrison, the giant selected him Number 85 overall left handed pitcher. He got 2.5 $1,000,000 signing bonus, which is like I said, above the above the pace lot for number 85. Get this and make with what you want of high school baseball stats, but it's kind of fun. When you see a guy who's I feel like that right guys in the big leagues are probably the best from wherever they came. Whatever you know, wherever whatever, Cracker Avenue are street of the country there from every kid played in a league with a guy who is the most dominant guy in the league, and I feel like that's what the big leaguers are there. The collection of those guys Cal Harrison in high school get this. He went 21 1 with a 1.19 tiara at day LaSalle. He also last year as a junior went 10. I know The 1.26 tiara Hey, didn't allow a run last summer pitching for the U. Eighteen's team USA World Cup team. He struck out 12 in 10 innings. So hard throwing left handed pitcher Okay, I'm in. I'm all for it. All right, let's get to some stuff from from yesterday and it actually just real quick, actually on the Kyle Harrison note. He's an interesting case because we've seen Patrick Bailey show up now to camp right. The Giants put Pat Bailey, who is their their top hitting choice or her top offensive selection in the draft in the player pool, just Because I think they want to make sure he's getting work. I wonder what they're thinking about the pictures. If they think a time off for the pictures is okay or time away, is OK that we could just give them a program and maybe save the number of innings of the stress on their arm. For the time being, could be Shawn Jelly. Also another guy, young guy who's not in the pool, so it seems like maybe this is by design. Not that I would expect a young guy like like Kyle Harrison to just 18 years old pop up it at Oracle parking the Giants player pool, but they now have three of their top pitching prospects. I believe you are not At camp, so the hitting prospects are because they want to get work pitching prospects. Maybe it's it's taking a little light on the arms but something to pay attention to, as we parse through the season anyway, so sound from Gabe Kapler yesterday. This is what we were just talking about his focus on the pitching staff relative to the hitters. Now he's saying he thinks the hitters they're just going to struggle in General Kate No. I don't know if he's just Sadie. It's a timing thing. I don't think he's slamming his guys. I think he just knows, Hey, that hitting is going to be an issue. It's going to be a timing thing. And the other thing to consider here is with these hitters. You will very seldom if at all, I think she a picture twice or three times in a ball game. Right, especially early in the season, Like what's the over under on Johnny Cueto Innings pitched on on Thursday of next week. 3.5. If he gets through three. I'd say that that's a hell of a relevant outing on maybe he's maybe he's more ramped up to that. Maybe he's good for 75 pitches and go four innings or five innings. And, of course it's It's how economically are, too. But Clayton Kershaw, I'll be a good litmus test for that. He's a true ace. Right? See what Ace Khun do on these. These either sort, pitch counts or or differently, manage ballgame so Ah, Here's Gabe Kapler yesterday talking about how he's more focused on the pitching staff than the hitters, and he tells you why. In all openness. I am much more focused right now on on the pictures. I tend to think that hitters are behind pictures and so I expect some struggles at the plate. In spring training and even this short and modified camp. It just takes a little while for others to catch up pictures, and I am uber focused on things like discounts.

"Here's the season ending injury. Didn't he did he rip ACL or something? Let me look. Yes. Surgery to pair torn meniscus in right knee. So that's not ACL. But that's a severe injury that. That's basically a lost season for Jason Castro last year. But they're bringing him back. He will be the starter. That one should probably be a little bit of a fifty five forty five though as well. Right. Because of what Garver was able to do I don't know Garvers profile behind the dish. If anyone knows that off hand, and they could tweet me at spore to let me know if he's somebody's the bat. I guy can he handle his own back there because I know Castro has a good reputation behind the dish is so then I'll keep him into into some playing time. Garver could also snake some time at first base though and sap some of CJ Krones playing time although cronies coming off a great season. So unless he flops. It won't be too much. But anyway. I think Castro. Super deeply, right? All these guys. I don't think I need the caveat that we're talking deep league here except for maybe one of the remaining guys a little bit of a shallow or league consideration. But they're all deeply, okay, but Castro, you know, he's been a solid like ninety ninety three WRC plus the last two seasons that he played. He was dreadful last year in his small sample before the injury. Double digit Homer guy. Eighteen fourteen eleven eleven ten the batting. Average can be pretty brutal though, it's been in those in those double digit homers seasons. It was two seventy six that was the all-star season with the Astros. But then to twenty two to eleven to ten and then pop back up to two forty two in two thousand seventeen. So yeah, I I would prefer Garver as well. Even as a backup. I prefer him to Castro. Okay. "There's the shotgun. Snap looking past toward the end zone. And it's. Comes up with a store. Two minutes to go to yard touchdown. The two thousand eighteen Heisman Trophy was awarded to Murray. Hello. You found the leadoff spot. With your host. Adam Copeland on KNB are six eighty sports leader. Mikailah Murray sound coming in he's at the forefront of everyone's mind right now as far as the sports world concerned. Like, I said before it's rare you get a story that covers three major sports college football, of course, right on top everyone's head after the national championship and the way Tyler MAURICE played man, of course, winning the Heisman Trophy. Then you get a bigger story, of course, here in the bay area because it's the Oakland A's and because we're pretty aware of the the incredible season. They had last year and the thought that after two years ago when they have the number nine overall pick going into last season. And then they they draft a player that people sort question. How could you draft a guy who may not end up playing baseball? And the thought was do there's no way this guy is going to go to the NFL. But then he as I don't think believed he was going to go win a Heisman Trophy. I think don't be an even said that. So we'll get we'll get into a little bit more of that. As far as Kyle Murray's baseball career was concerned. But. Billy bean was on with Murph and MAC about a month ago month and a half ago, we have a date on that effect. That's in the system there. We're going to hear a cut from Billy bean, just a minute December four. So there you go a little over a month ago he came on. And this is wall the the Heisman high pitched started to circulate around him. I'm not sure we could look at the Heisman and say had he not won the Heisman he'd be playing baseball. But the report last night from Susan's lesser of the San Francisco Chronicle is that he will at some point or the as are expecting him to enter the NFL draft. Now, Scott Boris is his agent. So there's a lot of stuff that goes into the Scott Boris. I don't think it's going to switch gears and dip into football now, which I don't I I don't believe Boris's an agent at all in football, mostly just baseball. But he put out a statement, of course, about a month back. Same thing saying I expect him to be at a spring training February fifteenth when they report to Mesa Arizona when the when all the youngsters in the and the guy in the position players make their first report. Well. In between the five days when when stout Boris made his first statement saying there was no doubt he'd play baseball to sort of real in that back in and saying, I'm not positive he'd play baseball. The only thing that happened in those five days lesser reports is that he won the Heisman Trophy. So once you win the Heisman seems like everything here started to change. So here's the Scott Boras, quote, he says when you win a Heisman Trophy. You're gonna have a lot of information come to you to be looked at all I know is Keiler has a tremendous opportunity to be a great baseball player. And he knows that he has every intention of being in spring training in advance that interest. So that was of course, before he won the Heisman anyone the Heisman and everyone kind of went. Oh, well, maybe maybe not so fast. He 5-foot-10 up. Probably not a quarterback in the NFL. Right. Dave. I mean, that's a big thing. I mean, they make a big case of Russell Wilson. And drew Brees being they say six feet and those guys are like five ten five eleven right. I had a list up here of a great quarterback six feet under guys like Kentucky. Cleats. Yes. Could Fran play today gave? Yeah. Would the way he that? He runs in the way, they the dinking done kind often. So yeah. But when we look at a guy like Lamar Jackson who used his legs most thing collagen collar Murray, I think a much better passer than Lamar Jackson ever was in college. I think Lamar used his legs a lot to get open. But I think Tyler is stronger arm, much more athletic. Maybe not quite the speed. I'm not sure maybe comparable speed to Lamar Jackson. But of course, the ravens put Lamar Jackson and a system that they felt was affected where they just do the RPO the run pass option left and right. And and you've got a big guy and Gus the bus back there. You had a great defense. And then the chargers exploited him in the post in the the playoff game last week wild card weekend. They said a lot of blitzes, Adam they I mean the offensive line was porous in that game. And you've got to have a big offensive line. If you're going to run that kind of that kind of offense ninety percent of the time in a ballgame. Right. When you're when you're relying under quarterback to complete like eleven passes a game or ten passes a game. You better have a damn good offensive line. Does it mean to run in the ball a whole lot? So the sad thing here. Sad thing. The unfortunate thing here for the as is. And Susan's lesser report of this that the ruling baseball is if you don't sign your your number one draft pick your first round draft choice the following season. And this is how it works with a with the tiered free agent market, right? If there's a free agent like Bryce Harper will is is our free agent. If he signs with say the dodgers next season the nationals will get a compensatory draft pick because he was a type a free agent, right? Okay. They'll get a draft pick a sandwich Paker something between the second and third. However, they figure that out the giants got one member with the year. They drafted Madison Bumgarner they had three draft picks in the first round between the first and second because they lost a player of the year before and they were getting compensation for it. So they had Tim Alderson. They had Madison Bumgarner Wendell fairly only one of those pan out. Tim Alderson did turn into FREDDY Sanchez, and we know how that worked out. So the same thing happen with just about any type airtight be free agent. They give you a compensatory draft pick. Now, the same thing will happen. If you you know, you go. And you try to draft the player. And usually it doesn't happen where you don't sign your first round or because if you're a first round draft choice oftentimes you're getting paid in the slot that you want to get paid in and you're more likely to to be. I mean, you're generally viewed as a top prospect, then within the organization they try to fast track you now they're trying to get you to the bids. They try to make sure they've spent a number one pick on you that you're gonna go. I remember when I was in high school. I played a Moreau Catholic and Tyson Ross was pitching at Bishop O'Dowd at the same time, I was in high school. So we faced him a handful of times and also at the same time Jason Castro was in our league. He was playing catcher Castro Valley High. Now, Jason Castro was viewed as a guy who could have been drafted out of high school as was Tyson. Ross. Jason Castro won the league MVP that year had already committed to go to staff to be a catcher Stanford. I think he took him to a super regional or something. Maybe the year before he was drafted ended up getting drafted right behind BUSTER Posey. But the thought was that had I think, and I believe the Red Sox went out and still drafted Jayson Castro in the twenty-something round the thirty something around late in the draft because you're not going to waste a top ten round draft pick on a guy who might not sign with you. So if a kid is committed to a university, and this still happens a lot where if a kid commits to a university to go play college ball and you draft him higher than maybe he'd anticipated or sometimes they'll commit any way. Just let me know they've got somewhere else to go play. And then you draft him. He might he might forego the college season Alah Billy bean to play professional baseball. So Jason Castro had already committed to a good college. Baseball program to go planned or Mark lasette at Stanford down at sunken diamond, by the way, Toby Gerhart was his leftfielder when he was out there that was kind of fun. That he was other calling wall. She's in the in the major leagues. Now, he was a second basement on that team. So a good program when Jason Castro decided to go there. So the Red Sox opted to not waste they hide raft. Economy drafted and pretty late. Dave, do you have it up there? They will go. He was doing a little next to the Jason Castro. They will find a forest wigs. Actually when he was drafted. Well, they didn't waste a high went on him. And then he went to Stanford. And then he comes out after I can't remember if he played three or four seasons or ethic three and then he decides he's he's going to enter the draft. And he gets drafted yet again. So then he signs because he got drafted in the first round, which he made on a bit of first round Radha high school, if you are you probably signed. But if not then, you know, whatever, then you go to college in your reenter, and you hope it works out as it did for Castro. Same thing happened with Tyson Ross where Tessa Ross we have been drafted out of high school. Now, I believe Tyson Ross parents are ones in the medical field one. Maybe a teacher something of that nature. And he said, no our kids go into Berkeley, Berkeley, a damn good school. He's going to go get his education before he goes to play pro baseball. So. Nope. I think drafted Tyson Ross outta high school and then he signs with Cal. And then, of course, ends up with the as and the rest is history. You got the year. Dave Castro was drafted in the first round in. Oh, eight ride the Houston Astros. Right. But then in two thousand and six I believe he was drafted. I think two thousand six he was drafted late by the Boston Red Sox did not sign, but the Red Sox didn't waste a high selection on it because he was going to Stanford. Yeah. Say it doesn't actually say about that. Yeah. It just starts with it starts with his with this year. He signed. Yeah. He was a first round draft. Of course, rolled over a pitch to Joaquin Arias to end McCain's perfect game. So the same thing happens in two thousand three two thousand thirteen Mark appel a pitcher at Stanford actually played with just past Castro was a I a first round draft choice by the Astros did not sign. So the Astros were given a compensatory draft pick the following year. The difference with all this with Tyler Murray. Is that Keiler Murray agreed to the contract cower Murray signed his deal with the as for poor point six six million dollars under the stipulation, and I actually didn't know this that the you're allowed to go back and play for your junior season. Not for your senior season in hindsight. Now, I think as fans are thinking well damn they should have just told him. Know, you can't you can't do it at all. You can't go play football at all not because he injury, but because of the risk factor. Now, I was reading a tweet from Julian McWilliams of the yesterday who covers the Oakland A's. He's been on with us here in the leadoff spot came on during the postseason. He played some baseball. And he was talking about how when Tyler Murray was coming out of high school. He was viewed as like a guy who would have been right behind. Andrew Benintendi of Boston Red Sox is like a number one number two like a first round draft choice out of high school. If you're a first round draft choice in baseball out of high school, and you still want to go play football in college. It's pretty clear to me that your mind is set on playing football not on playing baseball, which I think should have been at the forefront of the as mine now, I I'm not gonna put it. I'm not gonna come down on collar Murray for saying I'm gonna put my eggs in his many baskets as I can and take any opportunity allotted to me because here's the deal Cuyler Murray goes out, and he tears his ACL playing football this year. He still has a contract with yoke Liniers, and he is probably not drafted into the NFL at all features ACL, but he still got a contract to play pro baseball. And there are not many ACL injuries in baseball, you'd probably be okay recovering from that. And still having a pretty good minor league. Or or whatever it is career trying to get to.
