"If you have had any experiences positive or negative of reclaiming missile p._p._o. Insurance then we'd love to hear from me you can get in touch with us on our email address money at after you don't come and i will update you on the progress of my own personal personal of p._p._i. Claims on officiapl 'cause we all have bad habits but these can prove pretty costly if they are linked to our finances now my next guest argues that we hard wired as human beings to favor immediate pleasure over deferred gratification sound familiar but he's also going to share some effective active money habits. We can all adopt jason butler. The f._t.'s wealth man columnist joins me in the studio. Now welcome jason clear well one of the worst financial habits as it turns out is letting our emotions rule our finances yeah well. I think it is because if you look at most of the studies we we've got a a primeval hard wiring to favor immediate gratification immediate rewards as opposed to things in the future and when it comes to money spending spending your money now to have an immediate reward of holiday or going out for drinks or buying that new car or vice cray moldavia's. I'm in the house of these resent shows but that will always crowd al and we'll always be more appealing because primarily we are hardwired to think about out survival and that served us very well you know thousands of hundreds of thousands of years ago but when it comes to your money can play havoc with your need to save invest invest and to avoid spending more than you earn and incurring debt now one of the things that you said in your column on this topic was that you should avoid making financial decisions and when you are emotional as a direct result well. We're all emotional. All of the time the point i was making was that if you all going through trauma or if you are very reese sad or depressed or you're grieving that is not a good time to be making k financial decisions. I mean you know buying three coffees is opposed to one in the long. Run won't be doing you who finances any good in the short time. It's okay but deciding about selling houses businesses investing in new things or even data if you've sold the business i've seen this many times you've you've. You've spent years building a business you sold it for significant some several million pounds pass and then lots of opportunities come to you and your flush with this feeling that you've been vindicated you for all your hard work and so therefore you're over-optimistic so your emotional state where it's predominantly to make you feel better more because you're overly overly excited and optimistic about the future from what you've already achieved can mean you doubt look things clearly and dispassionately so so the doer in you impulsiveness as part of you will respond to the need to do something as opposed to the rational planner the long-term watching your best interests well as we were hearing an all fast ice about p._p._i. P._p._i. Anyone who's managed to actually get some p._p._i. Compensation your next backup habit relates to autism or to spend these unexpected windfalls yeah well well. That point is that we don't view every pound or everydollar. Every year are the same so where the money comes from the source of the money seems from all the studies. I've looked at seems to have a big bearing as to how we think of it so for instance. You might think that when you go if you if you bet say hundred pounds and you've got five hundred pounds back. You'd think that the hundred was yours but the four hundred was free money so you could do something different you if it rather than thinking. I now have five hundred pounds. What should i do with it. Full stop where it's come from or if you have winnings so we re regular on the premium bonds most of the time it's twenty five pounds. We don't spend that money. We just have it reinvested so so i think the point there is that if you get payrise or if you've got bonus we get tax rebate it all of it is the same you should just look at it and and develop a set of rules and i think one of my previous articles i talked about the money rose deny your own set of rules and doesn't matter where the money comes from you should dispassionately look at it and apply it to your short medium medium and long-term needs and priorities as you said in the article future you and fun you make time for fun yeah some of it you. You know have a have in mind. Keep the key point is is that you've got to be making sure. You're good to all three of us. Base it you the present you fun you and the a future you and finally also reckon we can replace some of our bad habits with good ones. You've done that yourself recently that you would have any bad money habits being jason the plenty of money habits. That's what makes me reasonably good advising people but yeah the one was about alcohol and and that's the central fame which i explained is the i hadn't had a he week in thirty years other than if i had flu or something when it hadn't had an alcoholic drink that doesn't mean i was drinking everyday or drinking enormous amounts including gap in the morning but just thought we'll hang on a minute this isn't right and i wanted to change my association and my habits around alcohol and so what i did was i replaced the alcohol in my fridge. We've just non alcoholic beer and non alcoholic wine because he was actually the routine of having a cold beer in a friday night or a glass of wine with dinner on a friday or saturday and i wanted to just change change that the alcohol sommes about if i go out with a friend or a colleague or a special occasion or i want to celebrate something or fill you know the situation is more social who was opposed to habitual so when it comes to money if you're thinking you'll recall go out to the shops and spend money for an hour in your lunch break. What did you think about taking the book. I'm going to sit in the park and replace that that previously spending or financially detrimental habit with a better habit by redesigning your environment and your routine well lots to think about their thank you very much to jason butler or wealth man columnist you can read his column the six effective financial habits to adopt now on our website f. not dot com slash money the tape it annual allowance a means of chlorine back pensions tax relief only affects those on very high incomes however the unintended consequences of this tax legislation are affecting everyone. He relies on the n._h._l. In burson senior staff cutting their hours sometimes refusing to work extra shifts in order to avoid punitive tax challenges the new chancellor side javid has pledged to review but how far will it go here in the studio to explain more. It's incumbent incumbent the f._t._c. pensions correspondent. Welcome back jack with a pleasure to have you on the f. t. money pecans but these are pretty tricky concepts for people to get the heads around but can you tell us why. The taper is such a problem for the n._h._s. There's two reasons why the tapers such a big problem finches rich's <hes> number one. It's the rules and the design of the pension scheme number two the n._h._l. Has got the most higher earners out of all the public servants servants <hes> in this country so that's the reason why the nature has particularly hit by the tape just breaking down those two problems to start with the pension scheme. Mm is rigidly set in terms of contribution so consultants the most senior doctors will typically have no choices to what the level of their contributions unlike people in the private <unk> sector they typically pay thirteen to fourteen percent of salary into this game or their pay nothing and what this means is that it affects pension growth in that pushes them into into the type zone so that is achieved problem is the lack of flexibility and secondly the other issue is is just the high concentration of higher earners in in the indian h._h._s. At risk of the type of currently every full-time consultant in this country working as a senior consultant is at risk of of of getting a type of bill so this is why the problem is so big not just for the n._h._s. but for the government who wants to ensure that patients get seen in a timely manner around waiting too long for for this surgery so what the pensions experts think the chance level due to try and find a cure for these problems. The chancellor tesla has proposed number one just changing the rules for the pension scheme foreseen your doctors only for the rest of the for for for members of the innate chess or so anyone else just to start with to make clear these changes are only recommended for senior doctors and what they will do is give seeing doctors more flexibility for flexibility over their pension contributions so they can mitigate the risk of getting into the type zone and getting tax bills doctors aren't completely completely happy with this resolution. I want the tape to go. The government has said that it's going to review the taper but as to what happens from here no opinions <hes> fairly mixed more so though on the side of minor tweaks to the system more generally the experts. I've spoken onto do not see that this is going to lead to any more wide scout changes across the system to the tape because that that would be quite a drastic measure asia for the government to do without a broad review of how tax relief works so for anyone listening who's affected by the pensions tape. He's working in the private sector. Uh not much hope that the n._h._s. rat will kill the taper off explained in your article but for other high earners in the public sector. They've been kicking off in saying well if you're making exceptions to the n._h._s. Allowing people to have <hes> you know cash in lieu of pension contributions for example then we wanted and we're other servants. It's like dentists so yeah the dentist unhappy with the judges when they heard about what was going on with us and quite i can see their argument to because there are plenty plenty of high awareness in working as dentists as judges in the armed forces working as medics for the forces particularly who were hit by exactly the same problems problems and in some cases even worse than than the natures and they haven't got the flexibility so their argument is well. This flexibility should be extended to the rest of us as well now. The government is committed to reviewing the effect of the taper across the public sector that would cover <hes> dentists the armed forces police chiefs et cetera but for them to go as far as extending these flexibilities to other public servants would involve the treasury having to make some pretty tricky decisions <hes> a number country because it relies on those pension contributions from the higher earners to subsidize <hes> the opinions of of lower earners working for the public service so for them to make the decision to extend those flexibilities for the rest of the public sector. I think would be quite a big move but i can certainly we see the case and the argument being made by the rest of civil public servants for that to be those flexibilities to be extended to them as well well. Thanks very very much. There's a joke company. You can read the full story on our website..

"Yeah. And the load. This is Steve days. The Steve day show. Well, unfortunately for you. This is not Steve day. I'm sorry. Steve day is out this week. But you've got us Sarah Gonzales and Jason Butler all here here in Dallas by popular demand. Yes. Yes. They were like probably three hole people who were like we really wanna see Sarah again on radio together for three fins. Yes. Your mother my mother. My son three, right? They're not not your kids, though, just mind lot happened this weekend. We've got a lot to get into glad to be with you. I think the the one thing that stuck out to me. The biggest news over the weekend. I'll see if you agree Jason was the the ruling on the Affordable Care Act. There was a federal court here in Texas. Go Texas who ruled that the forego Care Act is now on constitutional that was big. That's huge. I mean, there's a lot. I think it's gonna take us a while to even get through this. And what actually this means? But I kinda cracks me up though, how the name of it the Affordable Care Act. And I mean, it kind of brings us to. And I think we have this on here tweet from. I mean, she's she's really she really is a leader in know. Academic mind. Oh, yeah. Maybe we just call her the professor, professor Causey Cortes. We should her friends. Call alexandria. We're gonna call it. Professor, doctor Dr yonder. Cortes, smell so much about everything doctor or anything else. But dr. But this tweet just reminding her fellow millennials to get your act together and buy insurance before tonight's deadline. Okay. So is open enrollment of pain. She says. Yeah. This is the best part. That's all millennial. The hold on. Hold on film. Eleni is open enrollment pain. You are on your computer typing things. These these kids are on their phones and their computers literally all day long. But open enrollment is a pain because you have to cook. This is my first name. This is my last name. This is like, no, it's it's not a pain. There's auto fill auto fill bills in the entire thing. Already lit pain for a reasonable logical adults. But I forgot who we're dealing with to check this out. You know, this is this is a stunning I think. I don't know acceptance or something or maybe just giving in. But is it expensive question, Mark? Yes. What the heck is the name of this thing? What is the name? What is as a stand? Well, but imagine a system here engine expensive. It would be if we didn't have the Affordable Care Act in place. That's of course, their defense. This is ridiculous. Affordable Care Act is it expensive. Yes. So many times. I I'm just sick of this is that they try and blame like the reason for rising premiums and all this stuff on GOP, the free market conservative. Whatever it's the the reason why it's so expensive is because of the socialist program called ObamaCare that is the reason why it's so expensive, right? But well, and you put you couple that with the fact that now with the individual mandate does not exist. Right. So no one is being penalized. That was their entire premise was. Okay. We understand that you know. There are issues with with what we are concocting here in this portable carrot Affordable Care Act, therefore, we will make sure that everyone joins we're going to to mandate that everyone joins to offset all of these other issues that you have a problem with and their argument. Of course, was that that was going to offset the cost and everyone was going to be buying into this. And that would that would settle it. But now that the individual mandates gone. There's no literally only sick people are like why wanna buy into this? The only people that are going to because either you're you've either got the incredibly wealthy who can afford or you've got employers who obviously sometimes can afford, but they can adjust depending on what their profits are like, so you've got incredibly wealthy. Don't have a problem buying insurance. Employers are buying insurance. This is hurting the Democrats base like their own plan. It is hurting. Their base because this is hurting the average American, you know, the the the forgotten Americans who are just trying to paycheck to paycheck. These people are being hurt by these premiums, and it's because of the individual mandate and the Affordable Care Act and the way that they structured this as a tax. That's that..

"Thank you for being a friend. Travel down a road and back again. It is. A con. Welcome back to multiple money. Chris hill here in studio. Jason Moser, Jeff Fisher, and Matt ARGUS singer. It's our thanksgiving special. Trying to get to the Turkey. Stocks guys. It is the the stock to avoid we've we've done a little looking back at twenty eighteen but let's look forward and just go around the table. Jeff Fisher, I'll start with you. What is what is a stock that you think is really in the Turkey category. Have any of you ever shopped at a Dillard's department store twelve longtime ago? Yeah, they're not really in this Washington DC area, but Dillard's tickers DD s you know, their retail department store competing with every other retailer out their revenue peaked in the year two thousand actually at eight point six billion two thousand what to. Just two. Eight hundred eight point six billion now at six point five billion just slowly steadily declining interest expenses of fifty five million on their debt which net debt is about seven hundred million eats up about twenty percent of their operating income. And now their margins are under pressure as well as the competition just keeps growing so the stock trades at about twelve times expected earnings fourteen times free cash flow could maybe be taken private at some point. There's a lot of family ownership involved. But still I think overall it's it's a Turkey to avoid. Jason moser. Yeah. So Mattel is one that they just cannot seem to stay out of their own way. And in a time where consumer spending is actually on the rise, and seemingly this company should making a killing. I mean, they're getting killed instead. And I mean, the toys R us bankruptcy has been a catalyst in bringing not only Mattel down. I mean, of course Hasbro has been subject to that as well. But I mean, really they're still night in day stories in in with Hasbro. I'm quite confident they'll be able to recover Mattel not so sure there they continue to maintain a very less than compelling portfolio of brands is what it's all about right with Barbie. And how we also don't maintain the same sort of resonance with with kids these days and fewer ties with with owners of that IP like Disney and whatnot of me. Let that deal go that was just a killer in honestly, the balance sheet now is turning into one, massive liability. The stock is cheap for a reason I would steer very. Clear manning, you got one. Well, I I hate piling on here. And I didn't plan this Jason Butler, but Facebook. Okay. Okay. Yeah. I mean, this the user base basis massive they've got Instagram. They're going to keep making billions at least in the short term. And yes, I think the stock by most measures is cheap. But beyond the leadership problems that Jason talked about earlier, keep this in mind, I think Google Facebook, Amazon, I think all three are going to face rising scrutiny in the years ahead. I just think they're so big and so impactful, but ask yourself this which of the three by the nature of its business model is required to make your experiences and user worse in order to make money. What's the one? That's going to continue stuff. Your news feed or message feeds with stuff. You don't care about an art looking for. I'm not sure Facebook is the next cigarettes. But man, can probably all be a little healthier less of it..

Com but they say that health officials in Hawaii are also urging residents to avoid floodwaters now right. I mean I just make sense you want to avoid floodwaters because you just don't. Want to get swept away in some of these some of these have been coming through. And just ripping through communities taking out homes I haven't heard a lot about a high death count yet praying that that doesn't happen but when you see some of the devastation of these, raging floods that look like the washes I mentioned in Arizona Like you would think how does how how's everybody gotten by so far But that's not actually with the worried about, it's not actually the floodwaters so much as it's the years of chemicals bacteria and other toxic, substances in the water that's causing the greatest fear You know there's a, lot of agricultural land there. And so there's a lot. Of runoff that they're fearing is coming out all, at once coming right. Into the water entering floodwaters with cuts and, other open wounds increases your chance for infection, not to mention that creepy Garuba herb might be crawling up your leg, too but that's not you did you see the story earlier this week Of the guy who got bit by a shark it was a you know the the shark was like eating of, alive or trying to but that wasn't the hard part the hard part. Is when the guy was. Rescued the flesh eating bacteria that was in the, water had gotten in. The wound and that started eating him alive So I think. They were able to successfully stop the flesh eating bacteria from, doing any further damage to his leg but here, he was sewn, up all the cuts from the shark bites and and now they were sort of made. Doubly painful with, the with, the flesh eating bacteria and meanwhile from England the first time, that's ever happened in England there. Are other parts of the world that has reported, this but, it appears to be creeping across the globe not a pandemic but, a flesh eating s t TD Sexually transmitted, disease so like the thing that you pick up, from the water, but you're not big on the water And I mean it's it's a terrifying thought, of what it starts to eat first Who needs Catholic guilt just. You know flash those pictures around the kids that'll that that, shouldn't festivities right there Yikes yet that that plant that swims upstream like a snake. Runaway runoff in paradise and. An s. t. d. that is not just the, clap it's like a standing ovation none of that is is compared to the stories a. Sustained weirdness on coast to coast AM dot com that we collect all. Week long Tim banal is the news director of coast to coast. AM dot com you may know. Him as the host and creator of the broadcast the podcast been all of America he also covers the paranormal Newsbeat for. Us writing most of the original articles that you see during the weekend every Friday he's been joining us here at the start of the show with a round up of some of the. Most fascinating stories, from the last week and and helping put like a little. Capstone On those stories let's bring up Tim good evening Tim How you doing it's great to be back. It'd be talking to you again, tonight I had, a we, weekend I I've been reading this book weeks strange stars about. The the you know the way that Science fiction mainstreamed and pop music had decided to deviate from the mainstream and become more like science fiction it's a really cool book and we'll be, talking about some of the most famous examples of that and how they were directly impacted by? Science fiction in a minute but you you. Like, that. Period of the sort of the, late sixties seventies period of music, I'm a big classic rock, man for, sure yeah absolutely So if you had to name a song? Which you thought was based on a science. Fiction, story One which was maybe even in and of itself a science. Fiction song a song completely? Like a self contained little science fiction narrative in a in a song can you think of one Yeah I this one that I really love I hope it kind of fits the, Bill a treatise Clearwater revival, and came out of the sky crash yeah yeah yeah see, now that's interesting. So this is I'll I'll actually I'll ask Jason Butler because I'm not sure I I heard him mention that but I do like that story and so that'll be. One we'll get you but I mean some of the things that will be talking about coming up, our songs which I have known always and did. Not realise in a way I didn't I didn't, connect the dots like he does in how the artists were reading a science fiction novel and then decided to put. That into a song and then on the other side of that too I believe so much of, that, influenced actual science and we'll get back to that coming up in just a second but let's find out what were the big stories.

"A foreign country but what if you'll you'll you'll read out children starting a young family have you felt that one through they might not have a family when you retire at night you when you're in your retirement and your new lifestyles that something to think about and and there is another issue that some people that go abroad because they think is going to be cheaper ends up costing them more money in particular health fouls you have to think that through and then the other thing to think of his so what do we do if one of us is the dominant planner you know because there's always tends to be a doormat for planner with the money or the one that does today today what do i do if i go ill or died with my wife or my husband who's gonna take care of the dates day if i can't do it that's something a lot of people don't think he'll because the best laid plans could fall apart so and then the other thing of course is to think about any disconnect so if you thinking you will one thing when reading possible where you're going to have to give something up for you to achieve what it is you want in retirement you've gotta get disconnects out there and it's not necessarily that you're gonna soulful the problems but the e will hopefully get some compromises out there and you you'll actually get to sort of plan at least works and this is the most important thing is that the plan is merely a sort of framework it's not a straightjacket just to kinda rough idea it's a guess of where we think you want to go what we see good looks like and how we're going to achieve it and you can make course corrections you go but as long as you're on the same hymn sheet thanks very much that's jason butler you can beat the full t money cover on the eight questions to ask before you retire at f t dot com for slash money we've just had the retirement planning mustn't happen in isolation and about the importance of communicating your thoughts to your partner says to reduce the risk.
