Well, steal money was impressive that day, as I mentioned, he is hoping for a big upset coming up on Saturday at Kentucky downs and hutches you were listening to that call from Jason beam. What was going through your mind? No, it always gets my heart racing. Whatever. Whatever you have a horse going to win in a race, it gets you. It's a good feeling. Yeah, get you a little pumped up, doesn't it? Yeah. What type of trainer are you? Are you a superstitious trainer in any way? Not really. I grew up with my uncles and grandpas and dad and they were always real superstitious, but I've never been real superstitious. They always want to wear the same clothes every time they win a race. Yeah, well, I'm kind of the same way though. If I'm betting at the track and I'm on a roll, I have to go to the same teller. I have to I have to go to the same restroom every time. I have to do go to get my food at the same stand. I have to use the same pen until I start losing, and then the pen goes in the trash. But I am very superstitious when it comes to those things. What's the craziest thing that your family like superstition wise? What's the craziest thing they ever did other than just wearing the same clothes to the track when they're on a hot streak? Oh, that's really the only thing I can remember was they always had this where that same shirt dressed the same or everybody has to ride in a truck the same same way or this little things like that. Everybody in the same seat they were in. The race before. I love it, man. This is a great industry and a great profession to be in training horses too. Let's go back to the beginning. We talked about the fact that you have issued horses for more than 30 years. You worked at Arlington. We'll talk about some of your favorite Arlington memories, but take me back to the very beginning. How did a young Hutch get hooked on the sport of thoroughbred racing? Happened in the county fairs and Illinois is where I started just growing up. My dad and the family was always always in the business. I don't know, I really had to explain just couldn't I just couldn't get enough of it as a kid and I bought my first horse when I was 14 from my grandpa. And I was able to win with him and it was all downhill from there all uphill. You had enough money as a 14 year old kid to buy a horse from your grandpa? No, I didn't. My grandma's brother was a bank president and a little hometown Toledo, Illinois. And she said, if you need the money, you go see uncle Bill. So I went to the bank and borrowed $500 to buy that horse and I was able to pay it back and like two times. He won two times for me. I was able to pay him back right away. Wow, two

"And I do keep a few mayors up in Kentucky and constantly breed up there by and sell a two breed a couple of years here. So we stay pretty busy, but I like that number. It kind of just works for us and that's just kind of kind of the way it goes. It fits with what we do. Well, and I was going to ask because I know your dad will have some of them been named and your brother will have some of the names. Is there a way you decide who gets which horses or is it just kind of random? No, no. It's just kind of random less. And we're all under the same porn. And we were all kind of raised the same way. And certainly there will be different ideas of what we think, but when there's three of us, we all put our heads together and usually we'll decide the same way. So that's kind of how it usually goes. Jake's a home joining us for another moment here on the show. One of the things I love about your story is that you and your wife met when you were young kids, basically. Was she around racing as well growing up? She was very familiar with her dad was in the oil field, which is obviously a huge industry down in Louisiana at the southern part. And he had a few horses during the course of the years and he enjoys betting the ponies. So she was around, so she was used to, I guess, the vernacular of horse racing. And so and then once we had kids, our kids were involved in many things with sports and activities at school. Really not so much. That's kind of more so for me. And my girls really haven't shown that true interest like I did. I wasn't going to force anything on them. So but yes, they do they do enjoy to come every now and then when they're not playing a sport or some type of other activity. So yes, but they know. You know what I mean? They get it. They understand the game and then they certainly pull up pull for me and the family and enjoy it. Yeah, just from knowing a lot of people in the game. Your partner does have to have a little understanding because between time and finance and all that stuff for me. It could be a big commitment to sport. Oh, there's no doubt. She's fantastic about it. She totally gets it. But that's all we've ever done. And you know, I've always been one. If you just work hard, good things will happen. And we're going to put the time and effort. It's not going to be something we're just going to do every now and then and hope for some good luck. We're going to try to put the time and effort in to give ourselves the best chance for success. "I was a lone wolf as I told Pete for to tell. He asked where's my posse? I'm like, well, I have a positive one besides the friends I met the horse players at my last tournament. So I there were two other fellows, like I said, Ed and Gary who were at the table with me who stayed and but now she wasn't there with me. And I will tell you this too is another thing. Hopefully and again, anybody who's listening to this who's playing in the tournament is in a tour and hopes to get into the agency. I mean, we could be you. Okay. So anything that I could do to possibly help somebody compete and do better, I don't have any problem with giving some advice. But what I did, I shut down basically with communication after Saturday. Mid Saturday. Because Jason, I found the other two times, you know, friends who call me. How are you doing? How are you doing? You're always texting. You start getting obsessed with the phone, plus you have to handicap and there's a lot of there's a lot of activity going on in the room. And like you said, cheering and distractions. I shut down. I told my wife and my daughter and my son, I said, I sent them the leaderboard on Saturday. They're like, oh my God, I can't believe you're right there. And I'm like, so I said, okay, I told them, here's the deal. I'm shutting down. I'm going underground. I can't, and my Friends, some of them I didn't even tell I made Vegas. I just didn't want the distraction. I was trying to I wasn't my meaning. It wasn't to be rude or anything. No, it focused once in a lifetime thing. Yeah. You have to meet while I have to be focused. So shutting down and not responding to any text or any and I informed good Friends of mine and family that that's it. You'll hear from me at two three 45 eastern when the final tables concluded. It was so they were listening on Steve big lie and also watching the updates on TV G and so yeah, so I basically shut it down where I was just focusing. And I think that definitely helped me because you really have to kind of drown out any distraction. And at least I know with my style that I need to go to the go to bat with that I have to do that. "Week. About that in terms of weird derbies and they're always like, boy, you ate. Yeah, I've said it on a few shows before. I long for the days of spectacular bid and unbridled because those were the, you know, you weren't thinking about some of this crazy stuff that's happened last few years, especially The Rain and the DQs and everything else. Yeah, all right, Marty will always good to catch up with you, look forward to seeing you, I guess Wednesday morning. I'll be I'll be in Margo's office, you'll stop by, right? Oh yeah, I'll be there, and you know, Tampa made Derby day is always such an exciting day there. The fans are so Tom and you got the basketball turn right there this weekend and I imagine they'll do 15 million or more. I'm sure that they're going to set a record on Saturday. Yeah, I think the record would last year was like 15 two or I'm totally guessing off that memory. But I remember that was kind of I thought it was yeah, that was a high 14 you're probably right. I just got to get on the stick and talk to the higher ups at CDI and see what they want said in the commercials and I got to pay the production guy, Brian griggs, to do it. "Sat on him and just waited and killing him around. I was like, you know what? It's just shoot to win. We want to start having Saturday horses and enforces on fit that criteria. And we'll just start moving them on. And obviously, I thought, I thought it was giving them a confidence raising to drop an in for 30. We only paid 15 as a win. So we're still protecting and I think that was it was a good idea because I believe in giving horses confidence always. If you're not a level just always look for that next level down, it can help and might not, you know, just torch racing, but obviously once you once you learn, once you learn to get into the front, and he said, oh, this is what we do. Okay. I enjoy this. The lightbulb turned on. The lightbulb turned on and I knew he was something special after that race. I had actually breathed them again. One morning. And I was putting much of behind them on purpose because I figured these are two year old and he's like, mooch is going to want to run them down. So let's put a wall in front of him and kind of slow him down with a couple two year olds. And obviously mutually decided to go around by the quarter pole and he was going to blow by all of them. But Barbara road actually on his own, I was riding barbaro in that morning and he actually got his head and took down the stretch chasing mucho. And in the workout, he only got beat half a length and got that with him. So I was like, oh, this one's actually wants to play USB. He actually understands what we're asking of them. And he's willing to do it. So I told him that be ready. I think this was just going to be doing some pretty fun stuff for us. And we've got him back in distance and the starter, but that was just another practice race. And it showed that it worked out as you ran second to Harlan twist in the state trade. Yeah, second the lively traveling. I think I read going to come in the smarty Jones next. Is that right at Oakland? Yes, absolutely. So, you know, again, all of these races, once you have, once you have a nice horse, you're gonna get to pick your races. They're there. So we have the timeline already set up for him. And that was the key. We're going to start then look at the lively shyly and then the smarty Jones. Having two 6 and a half races in between that mile race for the smarty Jones, I thought it would be perfect preparation for that race. "The horses and give them money per start. So I'm going to go over there with my wife just ride her horses and just kind of waste three months. Little vacation kind of working vacation and we'll come back for the spring and Hawthorne. Have you ridden a Santana before? I did write there, probably like 15 years ago. Just for like Chicago we always have the winter off. Yeah, yeah. So I did go out there for like 6 weeks before and rode. And that was a very cool for me. So I'm going to go over there. I'm going to help her at the barn and we'll just write a few of our own in this, keep the horses fit. It won't be 8° over there. I can promise you that. Yes, we're trying to get out, get out of this cold weather because then when you come back and you'll be spring time, so. Awesome. Well, Chris, I really appreciate your time. I actually texted it to him the link after we were done talking, and I was like, you gotta check this out with me. And this race is crazy. Go look it up on YouTube if you haven't watched it. It's one word do SKA, and it should be the first thing that pops up. Like, the video that's got all the views. It says horse racing oddly incredible stretch run. It's like a 537,000. You just can't believe, you know, we watch these races all the time, right? And are there crazy things that happen in horse traces? Of course, it's one of the beauties of the sport, right? There's a lot of things that can happen. And one thing I kind of do love to is like, you never know when it's going to happen. You never know when some writers going to rattle off 7 wins. You never know when someone's going to ride a winner while bolting to the outside gate or no one the lights are going to go off in the middle of a race. Like you just you just don't and that tonic couscous race like he just turning for home, there's just no way that horse wins and there's a moment of acceleration between the 8th and the 16th pole. That you just can't believe. And I thought it was really interesting, Chris talking about kind of the tiring late part. It almost. Almost made me go back and watch it again through that lens of maybe they were just there because if I remember right like the speed figure was like a got like a 60 something like it wasn't even crazy, right? Because you'd think a horse winds like that. But speed figures are based on time. And so obviously it's visually impressive, but in the reality, the time of the race wasn't that crazy. And Augustus, she went on to have a pretty decent career 25 start 6 wins, 5 seconds, three thirds, made 91,000. You know, running at turfway park and river downs Indiana grand, Hawthorne. So we were talking about what dare and the other day, he realized there's an owner like it ain't it ain't easy to just to get to the races is a challenge to win your maiden is not something every horse does. And to win your conditions is like, you know, that puts you in a decent Echelon of horses because it's just not that easy to do. But I really appreciate Chris joining us. Looking forward tomorrow to tomorrow. Sam Sherman is going to join us for a little horse player Thursday. Hopefully I'll have some horseplay stuff to talk about as well. I sometimes I gotta rely on sometimes I have a topic I just want to talk about because I saw something that I thought was interesting and watch a sequence and just be utterly fascinated how the pick four paid this and the pick 5 paid this. Why was it in the easy answer as well? A four to one one the first leg. It paid 5 times more and the takeouts lower. It's one less multi. Sometimes it's just that easy. Other times it's not. And I always think it's kind of in fact there was a trifecta when I was looking through the races at turf way. I don't know which day it would take me a little while to look at it. But it came in like 9 to one over ten to one over 42 to one and in my head and it was a big field and obviously the top couple of favorites are out. And in my head, I'm thinking that's going to pay monstrous and it paid like 5 80 or 5 90 for 50 cents. Which just seems staggeringly low. And I know I've beaten the drum about trifecta and pick three. We need the dollar minimum not the 50 cents. But because I have to think that's one of the reasons that it paid so low. Because it just seemed like I think the exact for two paid a $173, which even that seemed a little light. And so maybe it was just in the wind pool that one horse was over bet. I don't know. But I'm always fascinated to see those kind of things and kind of try to not only figure out why and how, but in the situations where it comes out good. How do you get there? I don't know. So hopefully we'll have some I'll talk to something like that. But if not, trust me, we talk with Sam for a while, but tournaments and horse playing and he kind of talks about how he's essentially just become a win better in his normal bets and why, so look forward to that as well. "Derby, or they see the feel good stories that they choose to show and then they hear all the negative press that we get and I wanted her to see that it's it takes a village to get a horse to a race. No matter if it's a 5000 claimer, no matter if it's The Kentucky Derby, no matter what. So immediately, when I got the opportunity, I took her to the backstretch, and I showed her what people do and how hard they work. And everything entailed in it that it's this is people's lives. This is their and they do it because they love it. They don't do it because, you know, they're looking to get super rich or you know, you know what I mean? Clearly. Yeah, right. There's the assumption that it's just for the elite people and only the rich can afford it. But yet, you know, like these people give everything they have every day to get these horses and to the races. And to me, that's what it's about. So I wanted to learn the process from my eyes, not from what everybody else told her. And that gave her such a view of what the equine world is really about, whether it's the show jumping or the race track. Like it just gave her a more broad scope as to what the equine world involved. And then she can make chrome decisions from there. But I wanted her to know that hey, this is like these are people's lives here. It's just like anybody else going to work. These guys go to work. And then they have to go to the track to race their horses in the afternoon. They go to do nights feed. They got to do early morning. They got to and so she was just like, wow, I can't look like they've been here all day. I'm like, yeah. All day. So it was just important because I wanted her to understand why I loved it so much. And it wasn't just, it's not just about the gambling part. You know, do I like it? Sure. Yeah. But it's more it's more than that. It's more than just that for me. And why I have the connection that I do. And when we all tend to have our favorites or we like to have the trainers that we follow and but you got to be the early morning to watch the workouts and stuff like that to actually really know the process and behind it. And there's so many people that don't know the process, but I wanted her to know the process. So she could be like, wow. And you know what? She tells her friend that her friends want to come to the track. I've taken so many little girls to the track, and that's what makes me proud. Is because they don't see it the way that it in that negative light that I think was just out there for so long. And if I can just, if I can just change that little bit of thinking, then I feel like I've done a good job. Sure, Riddick our guest here on the program. "As the name might have given away, I'm Jason beam, and we talk about horse racing. So that's what we're going to do. I like to picture somebody new listening to the show and they just heard that corny intro. They're just like, nope. Let's see. Let's see what's going on over Steve big show. Four to tell. One of the other ones not taking listen to this idiot. Anyways, happy to be with you guys here on this Monday, a new week, a shortened holiday week. Of course, so Thanksgiving author Thursday we will have shows Monday through Thursday. I get Thanksgiving off. I get the major holidays off. That's part of my deal. And so we'll have guest tomorrow. We'll have guest Wednesday. We'll have just Jason Thursday. Don't want to bother the jury guys. It's their Thanksgiving too. Chef is often said, though, on holidays, I can still bug him. So maybe I'll bug shop. We'll see. But looking forward to that, of course, Wednesday opening day for us here down a Tampa Bay downs. The card is drawn the morning line odds are set. And big fields. 9 in the first race, and then everything else is ten or more. So they're not going to go easy on your buddy here. But as I told my boss, I said, I eat ten horse fields for breakfast. No prob colonial. They give me 14 for the early double every day. What is Tam? What is 11 or 12? So I'm looking forward to that. We'll talk more about that of course on tomorrow's show. I realized I've known pat for 15 years because I started I met pat for the first time like one of my first weeks at river downs. He stopped by. So always good to have him on the show. So looking forward to that tomorrow rent or others Wednesday and I said Thursday, we'll preview. The weekend, but it'll also be like, you know, Thursday, Friday, Saturday because their stakes races Thursday Friday and Saturday. There's good stakes race Thursday Friday Saturday. "I mean, it's endless. I mean, I'm trying to think of more. But off the top of my head, it's just it's every year. The guys that are not going to be the greats become better than the ones that aren't, and it's just these people get super convinced and their convictions and I just find it funny because it's just there's so much that we don't know and that goes into this stuff. And even though kuipers of the world are reaching for a lot of the information they have, it's like trying to predict a two year old maybe special weight. There's angles. So you're going to be surprised sometimes. Oh, man. I mean, yeah, I feel like racing people we could appreciate that, because how many times have we walked into a race? Like I frosted as no shot in the Met mile this year. That was me walking around Emeril telling everybody was the worst two to one shot of all time. I tell you what I left emerald faster than frosted ran that day for sure. I didn't like them. Well, and the thing was, it's like, it's one thing to get beat and it's another thing when the horse is 12 in front with at the 8th pole and you're just like, yeah, had that one clock. Yeah, I mean, between that and more spirit and the Met mile for a couple of years there, I definitely not only was beat trying to beat the chalk, but embarrassed. That happens, pal. "I mean. i don't know that. I want to be a super steady presence in the race. It's as i said yesterday. I do like a little card. Diversity like a little distance and surface diversity. Because i do think it keeps things fresh. I don't know that betters will be crazy. The synthetic surfaces in general. I don't think we're wildly loved. Some people loved him. I liked him in some situations. But if they're us more so as a you know occasional thing or hey we want to give the turf course. A few weeks but mostly. I think it's most useful as a rain off the turf thing because you can a lot of the i can still run and you can keep field size. That's for tracks. I mean that's paramount. Those you know we had the off the turf week at colonial downs and a couple of days where we still handle light. One point something million each day but you know our average two point five and so you know you put in a couple of three and four horsfield's and people just don't want them and they shouldn't by the way you shouldn't wanna bet three or four horsfield so for gulfstream. You know if they can avoid those big rainouts in the summertime where they get rain too often three or four horses stick and instead six seven eight nine stick. I mean you're talking about an extra. I mean hundreds of hundreds of thousands of dollars per race extra that will be bet as opposed to not bet so makes sense in that you know. In that sense i mean. Of course there of course was so wide lush beautiful does that make colonial now the whitest her of course in the country i think it might gulfstream think was bigger but maybe not Anyways let's take a quick break when we come back. "You only have to win one leg if you just bet the horse to win. I mean if you're combos. Ab with abc with abc. It might come in ccb essential quality. And you might get back. You know hundred thirty four hundred fifty bucks hundred two hundred or something like that. You had to do a lot of work when you could have just got three to five. Want him to win. If he's your big opinion which obviously we don't want sit fire three to five shots anyways. I just thought for me it was. It was helpful to write that down in the in the idea of you know why why am i. Handicapping what am i looking for. Because you know these preview shows that we do i try to give you a general sense of what's coming up for the weekend. It's certainly i'll give you a couple of opinions horses. I might like favorites. I might think bad or something like that but in reality none of us know until a all the scratches or out be what kind of prices are being offered and see. Also you know. Handicapping factors house detract plane. What's the weather like. you know. We don't know that stuff two and three days out. Somebody gives you a pick four two or three days out. It's kind of insane really isn't it. I might give you a roadmap for pick for. I might say. Hey look you know. Today's just not the day to central quality. He's he's a me. And i'm not saying look threes yet. But you know. I might say like today's you know he's gonna win. So you know if i'm going to try to play pick five. I would try to beat favorites b. c. and d. but i'm not gonna let a full ticket for you. That's that's crazy this. That's not how you do this thing so anyways just some thoughts these are. This is what horse player thursdays. Four throwing some thoughts out there helping you guys to hopefully like i said i don't want i don't ever want you to just copy your listen anything. I say his gospel. Because lord knows i'm no expert but i hope that at least forces you to think and you know wasting things and all that we wanna do. Let's take a quick time out. "Story. Yeah i Funny enough my family's not horse related that all. They have nothing to do with it. But i grew up down the road from somare farm. Who foldout princess omar. They're running and betsy. Helton and bernie houghton. And i started working there when i was ten. And just doing like the farm. You know work stuff cleaning halters and mucking stalls and they actually taught me to gallup at thirteen and i had been doing some kind of like riding ponies and doing some showing and stuff but the minute i gaza resource i knew it was gonna be racehorses forever so they got me into it and i ended up at jonathan's a couple of years later and School in my first turtles. I guess at some stage with him and kinda the rest is history went through the ranks in his his stable. So when you when you start writing at the time. Did you kind of think like i'm going to be a writer. This is going to be my career. Did you know that you the training was maybe in the in the future. Yeah always loved the training. I kind of knew early on. I didn't know what capacity or what it would look like. But i kinda always knew. I wanted to be a trainer. It wasn't until i actually started. I wrote jump races for a little while. When we're working for jonathan for like four years and and i enjoyed the writing but i knew i was never going to be wasn't striving to be champion jockey or anything like that. It was kind of doing it more. Just have it on my resume and everything and when jonathan started to slow down a bit and look to me a little bit more for more you know help in the barn and whatnot. That was kinda my opportunity that and that was twenty nineteen. I stopped riding focused more on helping him. You know with the training and then started to kind of really see. This is the way it was hopefully going. And you know i would. I have the owners behind me and at some stage you know. I was hoping happened. It didn't quite happen. I thought it would but nonetheless You know here. I am now. It's interesting i think one thing. A lot of our listeners might not realize is how much the assistant trainer a lot of times is a big communicator with clients and owners and kind of doing that business side of things as well as the the horse side of things i mean i know many owners who talked to the assistance just as much if not more than the actual trainer. Yeah and that's that was a huge thing that really you know have really benefited me. But jonathan last year especially between health issues and covert and whatnot. He was never even in the barn. So twenty twenty. It was mainly it was just me in the barn his program in his training and whatnot. But it was just me. And i over the years. Jonathan allowed me to creep. You know good relationships with his owners but you know that season twenty twenty which we were champion trainer that the last year you know i got to be very close with all of the owners and you know i think i earned their respect and everything else to win it kind of came time. When he announced retirement. I was in ireland. You know i had to call them and just call the owners and ask them you know. Could i keep their horses at the house. You know currently in the barn in pennsylvania with jonathan. Can you know. Could i take them to fair hill. I had my assistant at the time with. Set it up and i couldn't leave. Ireland couldn't leave those horses there and luckily all these owners they never never wavered at all. I mean absolutely you know. They're yours the train. So i was very lucky in. Obviously he worked for a barn like that for a long time. Any favorite moments or big races from your time in the shepherd born Yeah my so many but I would say probably. Winston see winning. You know the dismiss of turf writers in twenty nineteen and and winning clips award that year. That was all a pretty exciting sort of you know endeavor we were on with that with with him and he still had a minor setback and he won't run this year but i still have to train which is which is also very exciting so at colonial each week we we've seen horses who alternate between jumping and flat. There was in fact one coming in this week. I think who's coming off a win over the flat and their win over the jumps but are they trained similarly you know or or dr. Okay i think. A lot of people that misconception. A lot of people think it's like so different and it's not especially this day and age by jumping as the jump racing has gotten got the flat track as you see at colonial they no longer jump the last fence on the stand Which turns it into a sprint. Well you have to have a fast or you have to train them to be fast per se so i mean i worked my horses fi the saratoga horses they worked five eighth and one at one On saturday you know they. They trained just like like a flat. Horse does really. It's not much different. They might do a couple of far dollops in their week. compared to what a flat horse would do but for the most part like you need them to be just a speedy so You know some people think. Oh if they're too slow take him dumping at this stage. That's not what you look for anymore because you do have to be somewhat fast to run over john as well yeah. I think we've had two horses. This meet the vulture ones jessica's tapped on top. That have been you know. Jump in their last start and one here on the flat and both have been turf routes from off the pace and fitness obviously became a. Yeah and i mean. I i would have been one of those people and probably wasn't till two weeks ago who would have just dismissed it and thought like well. This horse hasn't been running on the flat so there's no way it's it's ready for that race in apparently not the case. No it's not the case. It's it's a funny but it. It definitely is definitely true You know they train very similarly and a lot of them do both you know very successfully. Are there certain characteristics of a flat horse that will make you say he or she might be really good over the jumps. I always look for obviously no brainer. You look for long on the car. That's kind of the first thing. But that doesn't mean dirt's fine too doesn't mean they can't run on the turf but you look on the but really dirt or turf. I always look for horse. It's always running late and he's always run out of room that always seems to be the that's the telltale signs look at breeding and you can get all of that but i always horse. That's been maybe fourth third second and always just seems to run out of room. They're normally the one that just want that extra in a couple of speed bumps. "If. I was playing in early pick five. I probably single a shar in the first leg of the horses just ran terrible over the mud. The last couple of starts if you go back to the fast tracks and especially back to gulfstream. You're looking at speed figures. That are far ahead of everybody else but those were while ago and pleasures kinda cold right now but we sayas. Isn't he's hot But again i just thought that might be a decent place to single. Then you gotta a maiden race with the decently full field. I think a lot of people tracy flick on the outside is interesting because the horse is already broken her maiden that she ran second being a nose in a maiden at keeneland and got disqualified. She's been disqualified twice in three starts And then she actually bumped somebody last time but she didn't run very well. it was in a stakes race. She was five to one in a stakes race. You know after being disqualified twice in a hundred thousand dollars takes freeze on preakness weekend. So i think it was black-eyed susan dey fact but anyways certainly one that's gonna get a lot of tension. I didn't really like so you know my my way of going. If this i'm playing this big five is probably single shar Take a few horses in that two year old race. That are not the favorite on the outside but again it just to me. It's the secrets with not that many horses early on and so it becomes the fourth race is the logical spread race for everybody so e unless you can really scope out a bomb there you know you're you're you're kind of in bed with everyone else. Who's five six seven deep in there for deeper whatever it is because there's a lot of a lot of speed but there's just a lot of horses that are five four five six two one eight to one Even ten to one on like to lodge that make a lot of sense and given the way the sequence structures with everybody singling mala thought not everybody. But you know what i'm saying And probably people going pretty narrow. I mean there's a lot of people might single that sixty five and the i. It just seems like a really tough sequence to find if you if you hate now thought it's probably an amazing sequence but if you think mouth is a single where do you get creative. Because i said the leg that you're going to want to spread is the fourth and that's everybody's spread so i think you have to try to find in racists one two or three some real separators and maybe not spend that much to get them. Because as i said with that big big favourite anchor in the last. If you're singling mala thought. I think i don't think you want to be invested too many combinations. Unless you're really against most of the top horses in the first four legs and so anyways just thinking out loud looking at the sequence kind of thinking how it might shape up and That's kind of my impression. Well a and it's a process obviously and reestablishing They're actually not that not that you were aided in any way by last year's difficulties The fact is that the purse account Just grew and grew in grew. "Midnight. Bourbon cost the opportunity to better place in the minute. The jack comes off that answer to the question is yes if paco stays on. It's kind of clear in the video at least to me that midnight bourbon was gonna run third. They both had gone by him or were in the process of going by him. And you know it just seemed like that was where it was going gonna end up now. Paco disagreed a little bit. In the post race quotes. He said he told everybody was fine. And he's gone ice up but he said my horse kicked me in. The knee felt pain in my ten in there and i couldn't move my leg for about ten minutes. I'm fine now you know. He's given us report. He said i had my horse and the right position to win. I was fighting back but my horse had a lot of run left. So i think i could have won that race. I one hundred percent disagree with that part of the statement because you were in the lead and both horses kind of went by at the same time now. They weren't you know. I think he would have been a length and a half back to links back and i know. It's hard for the stewards. You don't want them playing god in terms of just being out there. Predicting what could have happened But you know. I disagree with pacos comet. They're just from watching races like midnight. Bourbon was not winning that race. They were actively going by him. But then the horse did log in and so therefore again he was cost the opportunity for a better place. So i one. Hundred percent agree with the disqualification. One hundred percent agree with kind of how that all played out. there was a great quote afterwards. Flabby his only real quote was. I'm really proud of my efforts. Just clip heels That's it It in parentheses. this is lynn. near since reporting. We should give linda shoutout Says floppy and apologized to palko at parco said it happens. Man it does happen. Doesn't it tackle. It does happen sometimes. "I've talked about on the show many times. I was struggling. I was doing pretty good with my mental health before that and in louisiana i kind of you know really self isolated. I wasn't doing anything and it. Just i kinda went right back down the the ditch of anxiety and panic and depression and all that stuff and it and it got you know i was. I was doing bad. And so the last time i talked to. Trent who was. When i called him on the phone in tears saying i needed to go home and i needed to be around my support network because i was not feeling safe down there and everything else and so you know that was they had about four weeks before the thoroughbred meet started. This was two weeks after the quarter horse meat ended. And so obviously i put him in a little bit of a tough spot. They found they ended up higher. John kerry who was down there and it worked out. Okay i think. I think john might have missed the first week because i think maybe he had you know. Took a couple of weeks to get everything lined up. But regardless john still there which six years later but i always had a lot of guilt not only for myself but for just how that all went down because you know when travis left you know they. They needed someone. I really kind of thought. I was going to be the guy there for a while and i wanted to be and it just you know i look at it now like i was trying to process the guilt of that whole situation in therapy a couple years ago and i i really with a lot of that stuff. I just came to the conclusion that you know what i was sick and i was just trying you know i was struggling and i was trying to get through at the best i could and i did what i thought was the best for me at the time and i think it was the best for me at the time but it's obviously sucked for trent and for louisiana downs and so as we're sitting there in the middle of card i looked over and i saw trent he because he's gm at hoosier so he's obviously you know going be there. They're sister tracks big day and so i'm sitting there. Oh man. I said i should go say hello to him so i walked up. I said hi trent. I don't know if you remember jason beam and he said yeah man how you doing and so. We sat talked for a little bit. And he's like he's like so you know what what's been going on and i work for churchill and culinary i just got the tampa job and doing this and he said that's great to hear you know and so he told me what he was up to and I so i just want to come say hello to you and i said i really wanna you know. Just say i'm sorry for how everything kind of went down back there. And he kinda stopped me he goes. Are you doing okay. And i said i'm doing a lot better i said i really am and You know. I told him this what i just said here. I said you know. I was just sick man and i didn't know how to deal with it. Then and he put his arm on. My shoulder said some nice words. And i we say goodbye but it was. It was really It was really emotional. Because it was a little bit of a closure for that. I mean i kinda had done my therapy work and made the closure for myself but it was nice to at least get to chat with him and And say i was sorry for how everything kind of went and you know he obviously understood and just seem genuinely concerned and it was. It was nice to be able to tell them that. You know things are going well. And i'm doing well and you know kind of shake hands and you bygones are bygones and everything's all goods. That was that was honestly for me in a weird way like the highlight of the day. Just because it was it was it was so nice to to get to see him and kind of have that conversation after six years so the big ups to trent. And i was good to see him and i it was. I got to see a lot of you guys. I must have got stopped twenty times yesterday for people that listen to the show. Follow me on twitter. Whatever but the connection. And the i want to say power of the podcast but just connection that it enables for me to have with with so many you guys. Who are you know. We're all just horse racing. Fans i mean when i bump and you guys it's usually somebody comes up and they said hey you know i listened to show. It's nice to meet you and we immediately start talking about whatever races coming up next or you know that person's you know how they play the horses or or whatever and like it's just so cool to me to get to meet you guys and have those moments of of conversation and it just kind of put you know because because you know the show is done. It's me in a room and so we don't do calls and so the emails me very important because it does kinda keep that connection somewhat tangible even an email isn't tangible But going to the track and getting to meet people that listen to the show and appreciated her. It was what guy one guy or talking about. You know what we just listened to the inside the pylon interview so repetitive places. Show on every horse here. I just about fell over laugh. But like i love that. I love that that i get to meet people that listen to the show and you know like i said we're all just we're just worse players and fans and we're all just trying to enjoy the game. We love and i got to do a lot of that with with many people yesterday and it was very cool to spend the day with with scott. I've never truly gotten the hang out with scott other than one day at hcc so we sat in the car for an hour and a half each way and sat at the table with each other the whole day it was. It was a blast fact. We will talk to scott next as i said. It's not going to be the jury. So scott's gonna lead us off.
