The Best Movie Soundtrack Songs Of 2019 | Movies
"I have a very special show today later. In this podcast I have an interview with Robbie Robertson one of the founding members of the band a significant figure in movie history as well. Who HAS COLLABORATED WITH? Martin Scorsese over the years. He has a new documentary that he participated in the basically tells the story of his life and the work of the band called. Once were brothers so I hope you'll stick around for that and inspired by that conversation. I had to invite on Ringer Staff Writer Rob Villa. Who is one of the funniest and smartest people I know about music? I Rob She's we'll thank you. It's an honor to be here of course alot rob you write about music and movies at the ringer as well and quite deftly and I think the use of music in movies has always been frankly an obsession of mine and I suspect that you are also a sophisticated thinker about this idea. Is that fair to say? Sophisticated is a strong word. But let's go with your role with your a guy who has a functioning brain that watches movies with music in them. Is that fair to say Aisha's? Amd during sonic the HEDGEHOG. That's the way I would describe my relationship with music and movies me I was that guy I feel like there's a lot we know there's a there's a conscientiousness about choosing songs in movies now because we grew up watching scorsese movies and then the movies of all the people who watched. Martin Scorsese movies and start making movies of their own and so the use of the pop song. We're not talking about score here. We're talking about pop music appearing in films you know what is your. What is your sense of? Who Does it well and sort of what goes into making a good choice for something that's really obvious or really obscure. I think the obviousness I see a lot more in prestige. Tv generally like that's the plate. Like any use of radiohead. Almost across the board. Like I I like a lot of Westworld but just the way that Westworld is uses those pop songs you know the old style piano version of pop songs. It's just you're just sort of leaching off that songs energy like the the cash that it already has and you're just sort of stealing and implanting it into your TV show or your movie like it's there's a difference between stealing a song soul and like taking a song and building a new universe around it like sort of recreating it in re-energizing it it's a it's a great point. I'll never forget the moment I watched the pilot of Ozark. Which is the last the last episode of ours. Ozark that I've ever watched and at the end of it Decks dark by radiohead began playing and I was like. Oh this is that JOE now. I mean no disrespect to say Chris Ryan. Who's a huge fan of that series but actually that choice indicated to me what the creators of the show thought they were doing and it wasn't for me you know it just didn't Didn't click with what despite liking radiohead and Jason Bateman and. I knew that there was a pretentiousness that I was not going to connect with their What do you think makes for a good song choice in a movie? I think it has to be at least a little unexpected. It has to re- contextual. Is it a little bit like I? There are instances where obviousness is what you need and I think there are a few of those and my list here but I I think. In general you need some element of surprise some just more gratuitous are just more surprising way of using it than what you would expect. Do you think it's important to saying something about character or the scene itself or because one of the things that that Robertson said when he and I talked which I thought was interesting was the he really likes the contrast he moments. That's the moment when you take a very sweet song. Said it against a very violent moment or you take a very sweet moment and give it something more braces and that's obviously a hallmark of a lot of the people that are best known for choosing songs and movies you know. Think of Quentin Tarantino or fincher. Scorsese are all these people that I talk about endlessly on this show. Do you think that the that music can play such a profound role in telling a story in that way? I think so. I mean you can go too far in that the phenomenon of every movie trailer now using like a really slow down creepy version of a pop song like you think. Fight THE FI. The fifty shades of grey beyond say series. You know like I suicide squad. I think did that. You know you can go too far in that direction and and just use it entirely as irony like. Here's a really sweet song to contrast with an ugly thing. But Yeah I mean. That's that's sort of an overused tropes at this point at the time in the heyday in the early reign of those people those directors like. Yeah that was a really effective use of contrast. So we're here to do a top five list. You'RE GONNA share your five favorite needle drops in movies and I'M GONNA share my five favorite needle drops. Now I don't know your picks and you don't know my picks you almost ruined this podcast by accidentally sharing those picks and I would like you. I'm I apologize profusely and I apologize for my choices. I think this is going to be yelling at me in the next twenty minutes. That's my concern. You know what my concern is is just being too basic right. There are some things that are sort of undeniably signature moments in movies and music especially in the last twenty to twenty five years when when I think this phenomenon has really picked up. Steam and my choices are not songs that were written for movies. They are entirely songs that had previously existed before the film came along. Is that true for you too? I think in all but one case my number five. That's not true but I think that's an important thing that you have to have a prior. Ideally you have a prior relationship with that song that the movie changes. That's what makes a really good moment for me. Not all of them but that's the platonic ideal. I absolutely love that. I probably have one song that that is out runs an opposition to that idea. But that's a great

"Let's get back. This amazing episode. Okay. Next up is Mandy Bateman from Lub dub, which is a marketplace that connects people who want fitness training with the pros who can provide it no relation to Jason Bateman. I didn't know. Okay. I'm not giving him. My Jason handle. He keeps asking tell me Mandy, where are you based in San Francisco area. Okay. Wherever enough the north bay beautiful. Tell me what is your biggest challenge at Lub dub, which is L UB D U, BB dot I O. Exactly. Thank you. Well, we launched about a year ago and came out of our private beta in the fall and have been on boarding. Instructors freelance instructors who your local yoga teacher Pilates teacher. And right now, we're just a two-way marketplace where they can post their offerings their weekly classes workshops retreats that kind of thank God it and they love what we're doing. We're definitely disrupting the current model where you would go to a studio to purchase a class. So the instructors are really excited about what we're doing. And we have been listening to what they're saying. And I've been spending a lot. A time with them and talking to them about what kind of features that they'd like gone for you know, iterating from where we're at right now. And I spent a lot of time connecting them with different studios. So, you know, placing them, and I'd really like to create this like three way marketplace. Okay, or what I've learned to be a market network. So I keep using this term market network with people which I read about from MS or M F sees me. I've never heard this. But okay, you haven't okay. But I somebody would say to see so the b- being the studio business the b- being trainer a business to consumer. Yes. Right. Sousa three sided marketplaces, how some people might refer to it. So now you have this new entrant which is the studio looking for instructors to host at their studios. What I'm getting? Yes, exactly exactly originally what you thought you were going to get the instructors students not for one on ones, but for classes exactly, but those instructors don't have a studio. Adam. So they're renting spaces got it. So it seems like a lot it seems like a mouthful when I'm explaining it to people. Sure, but I have recently come upon this new term, and it's James career NFL. Yes. Badly at work the network effect. Yes. Network affect Jennifer look after so, I guess my question for you is is that a term that I should be using. Or is it a buzzword or three way? Marketplace. How would you best describe what we're doing describing to an employee a customer? No an investor. Invest. Okay. So here's the thing. Mandy. A lot of times founders get obsessed with how to present their idea to the investors, and it's understandable. The investors are sitting there judgement over you deciding from on high if they shall write the check and you are bowing down before them. Please may have a check the truth is the way this works is there's one thing that guarantees you to get a meeting, and almost always will get you funded, and that is a chart that doubles every six months or less. Okay. If you came in and you described your business instead of as a B to B to C or market network or anything, and you said, I got this funky business that it's pretty confusing but tripled revenue in the last six months. They be like, oh, it's funky and confusing. Great. Mike reiss. You say tripled six months? We actually did. Great. That's that's all that matters. Okay..

"He's. Episode thirty five Jason Bateman. And he's also a front wiper. If you if government one of those I am to you'll be disappointed truly. Yes. In in. Let's let's argue about it. So you your worldview you get dumped? Yes. And then you when you're done you go back front round upon was sure you are you a eunuch? But no, what do you do with gar? This is what I wanna push back against your telling me. You don't have the physical dexterity to wipe your asshole and not touch your balls afterwards. What he can hand paralyze easier for me to go around where the balls aren't. I would argue it is not at all. Because you've got a now lift yourself off either got do stand up. No, okay. So you have one side you're leaning over right to get your arm off offer you offer side. So now, you're now you're leaning on the toilets, which is already little bit preposterous to me. So you're leaned over halfway and then you've got your ham behind. Yep. So your shoulder rotator cuff potential does that hurt if you ever had a rotator cuff issue, not like yours. I guess. Okay. So anyways, very awkward position for your shoulder. And you're leaning on your side on the toilets. Putting a ton of.

"Those of you that are homing. I will get to you momentarily. I do want to tell you. I saw a couple of other interesting. Films this week this week I last night or the night before actually my longtime my fiancee, and I watched a film called war machine. And we both enjoyed it very much. This is a film that stars Brad Pitt as a fit it's on Netflix as a fictionalized version or kind of a satirical version of Stanley mcchrystal and it's loosely loosely true. But they're all fictionalized characters. And so it was pretty good. And watching this it only strengthened my resolve to get out of Afghanistan. I will tell you what film we really enjoyed the other night. It's on DVD now, but it came out just last year. It's called game night with Jason Bateman and Rachel mcadams. It's kind of silly. But it sort of a dark comedy, it's terrific. If follows a group of friends whose name who's a game night gets turned into a real life mystery after one of them's kidnapped by burglars. Really well done is it gonna win any, you know, best picture awards at the Oscars or at the Golden Globes now, but it's fun. It's fun. And then what else did I did? I see this week. You know, the Orrville is back, which is one of the few TV shows that that that I watched we watched the first two episodes. That's fun. If you're a Star Trek fan, you would like the Orville sort of a lighthearted funnier version of of Star Trek, and it has Seth MacFarlane who a lot of people know as the voice of student family guy. He's the captain, and I thought that was really well done. And then we finished watching escape at down Amora. This was outstanding. This was an absolutely terrific series. It's on Showtime. You can watch it on demand. If you have Showtime, and it is really so incredibly well done deals with the escape of those two inmates from that prison in upstate New York. And you.

"And then I just start having conversations with myself, definitely about what it could be. And I begin doing note cards and sort of laying things out, and it identity thieves. I of hanging out with the with Jason Bateman the other day. And he reminded me that for identity thief, we went to dodger game and somewhere between the second and seventh inning. I had sky. Sketched out essentially the plot on a napkin, and you can do this very, like very sort of skeleton like thing. And then you begin to expand that into cards. And then I do really do enjoy writing a very long kind of expanded document that really forces me to start thinking about things before I start writing. Because you know if psychologically the thing I fear the most is the terror of backing writing myself into a corner that I can't get out of or not knowing what's supposed to happen in feeling overwhelmed. And this helps me not be overwhelmed because when I'm working in prose seems like it's much much lower stakes. And so anyway, that'll works for me and I could theoretically and all that over in order to get a job. But no never know. For me, the earliest process is once you have an idea in your head, you put on these kind of goggles in any of your shirt. Looking at the world saying, is this part of my movie? Is this part of me that does this fit inside my university of gathering collecting things. And I'll make a folder and I'll just throw images in their if there's stuff that sort of makes sense. I'll tied up little notes just my notes on my phone just for what something feels like if it's based on existing movie or a book on a watch the movie several times, I'll go through the book and highlight stuff that's especially meaningful to me. You're just in the process of collection then before I would go into hitch on something. I used to write detailed pitchers restored of a transcript of what has pitted saying there, and I don't do anything like that at all anymore. And instead what I'll tend to do is figure out what the images are that reflect the world, reflect the characters, reflect some ser-, big, crucial bees. And so there's a lot of Google image searching for actors who feel like the right people, or you know, just production designs or settings and feel right for this put us on a folder, a print them on the color printer. A spray, glue them to my art boards and it's really positive going through those art boards that gives me sense like, oh, I missing. Something here. Like, what am I missing? Oh, I'm kind of missing a beat. I'm missing a moment. I miss scenic character who could do this thing. And so that process is really wearing feeling like this is what the boob is going to look like this. It's going to feel like this is the world of the movie. So all I'm taking into that pitch meeting is these boards and a really, you know, one pager basically of reminders to me. If like I'm going to start the conversation by talking about why I want to do this when movie feels like to me, these are some crucial thematic elements, and here's how I'm introducing the most important characters, and then it ends up being kind of bullet point. He as you get through it, but also allows me to have it be more of a conversation. So as I'm showing boards, they can ask questions they can sort of get involved in the process as well. So there's not a thing for me to be leaving behind because it's just sort of my setup for things rather than the whole movie on paper. It's really interesting listening to. You talk about that process? Something occurred to me and it's why don't bring the boards and like you do..

"The weirdo detective who won't let the case go and unravels. I like seeing Bill Pullman in wrote roles like that because for longtime in movies, he was always like the nice guy. You know, the nice guy, Meg Ryan Dumpson sleepless in Seattle or whatever, and to see him playing something a little more complicated. And we are, like you said is kind of fun, and I'm watching the second series of the second season of Ozark Jason Bateman. Have you seen any of series too? I have not seen any of it yet. No, I'm looking forward to jumping into it though. They continue to get in trouble really cartel the local authority. I can't just been along with the cartel. Growing TV people don't get along with. I noticed that I cannot binge season two. It's just to its to ten, I I can't. I can't do more than an hour of it. Really. I'm a delicate fly. Yeah, I, I don't know. That show. I think Jason Bateman and Laura linear, both very good in it. We're talking about Julia garner who plays Ruth who's also very good in it. Redneck who's tried to kill him and now is working for him. Right. I think the acting in it overall is good, but it just still feels like I've seen this kind of show before. I don't feel like it's doing anything particularly inventive, like it's breaking bad in the ARC's breaking bed. There's one episode that's really really strong in the second season. I was like only every episode were like that episode. I would have liked it more. It's episode. I wanna say seven. I think speaking of breaking bad. I know you're in on Seoul all away the I are you a fan. I, I love it. It's I, I'm so happy to see this show back. I've been chastised by one of our Email. I will not read it, but somebody forgiving away a spoiler for the show, I guess, from the previous or something like that. I apologize for that about Saul or. Yeah. From seasons pass, but I but I did love the way this last episode now you probably watches a whole groups. Haven't seen the last episode yet. They didn't send it to them. You said they would send you season, but not the last up like this one, it was great because this the beginning of it and this doesn't spoil thing it takes 'cause they always have like a scene from it can be from the previous episode or something like that, but sometimes it's from Saul, the future of Saul in this is him as Saul in the office punching through a wall money. That was the episode last week. Yeah, I found it quite odd in an entertaining way. Yes, really jumped around really jump around, but it was great to see that flash Ford because you're like, ooh, that's exactly how breaking that ended. That was the very, very end. So and families, what can we expect anything for Saul or even I think Jason Bateman is up for something. Ours saw is out of contention because it's, it's seasons, didn't fall within the qualifying period. So it's not. It's not nominated this year. I, I'm sure it would have been had it aired in the right Jason Bateman. I mean, the the nomination at least shows a level of respect for the series, even though I get what you're saying. Yeah, it's, it's breaking it is very, very serious. Like did calbury few moments of levity and that thing at all. Did counterpart do anything with the Emmys you know, you think I'm trying to think of that in the right time period also, because when did that start? Always in the wintertime was maybe January February wasn't that long ago? Yeah, I'm doing. I need to look at the nomination this again to to double check that, but I watched it again on it was on a dated a marathon over, you loved that. Oh, and I fill. I love j. k. Simmons and it's such a weird plot and it just once you're like, oh my God, this is what's going on. I get sucked in for four episodes when I didn't have the time for it this past weekend. So let's put jed on the real hot seat, throw the she's starting to blush already..

"I realized they couldn't create enough prep time to do all of how to do, and that was a big disappointment. But but as the executive producer, that is sort of that oversight position that a director gets in film is is the equivalent in television sort of that that executive several. So that was your deal your executive producer and you you're the director of the of the the, the stage setting? Many as I can do. The first two are the most important indirect sort of setting the town's. You're, you're the star. Yes. So this was all and they approached you, or is that in and when you read this stuff that was what you want? Well, they came to me about the. They actually didn't even come to me. This disease were the first two scripts were the only ones that were written and my agent read them and they were in the office of of of abandoned scripts a floor to below his office. Yeah, he had cancelled lunch and he read these. Two scripts. He said, I just read the first the best scripts I've ever read. And I said, well, what fancy client they four of yours because I'm low man. I don't mind on his roster and he said, no, I think it'd be good for you. And I said, well, what is it? He says, well, they're, they're, it's too I to episodes of a series. I go a limited series. You know, one that is a finite ending said, no, it would be an ongoing show. And I said, well, we're looking for a film for me to direct that would be an escalation from the first two films. I directed something with more scope and more schedule our responsibility locations. And he said, well, I think this could qualify as those things if they let you direct all of them. And I said, well, yeah, you're right. That'll be a six hundred page movie. Yeah, and he said, let's ask him about it. I said, okay. Do you think that they wouldn't even be open for that? They even today? Have they haven't called us, right? He goes, no, no, no. I just found these scripts. I go, okay. So I, you have to call them and say, hey, do you know who my client Jason Bateman is and be he's interested in your show. See. Do you give a shit and d he wants a direct them all he wants to do. All right. So basically the response was, oh, thank you. Yes, we know who he is. Thank you very much interest.

"It's with will Arnett and Jason Bateman Jeffrey tambor, Jessica Walter Elliot shock it and Tony hill and like the, there's this incident that happened on the set, I guess, where Jeffrey tambor blew up at just go alter and rely went to completely to town and was terrifying, and they talk about that. And she liked tears up in the interview. And Jason Bateman repeatedly in the interview is like, you know, not to belittle what Jeffrey tambor did or what he's been accused of doing it transparent. But you know, some people are just difficult and he says it repeatedly, and at one point Ali Ishak it, I actually haven't finished this completely at, but about two thirds of the way through. And she's the only thing that she said so far. Is about shanzer softball question about like growing up on the show, but then she interrupts to say to cameras, Willard, Jason, Bateman, like it's, but it doesn't make it. Okay. Just because a lot of people in Hollywood are difficult and then the rest of the time she doesn't say that much and usually tells you a lot about probably what the dynamics on the show are like, and you know Jason era Jeffrey tambor like we knew from, you know what? What the allegations were against him on transparent that he sounds like a fucking terrorist, but now, but like to this thing, it was just Golders upsetting, but also just just for like the other men on the show to be like defending him when and Jason Bateman goes out of his way like there's this Partridge Elfrid hammers. I'm really sorry. You know, really like learning mistakes or whatever. But you know, I can't. I'm not being transparent anymore, but I love Russell minute left to be interested element Jason's like, and there's no reason why you shouldn't be like he's really going out of his way. Way to like stick up for him and I, it's just it's so disheartening and so stupid. So annoying and I don't. I don't really know about, I guess this is bothering because I, I really like rested element and I, I've always been really drawn to Jason Bateman. There's something about him that I find really compelling and funny and earnest. Yeah, and now he's dead to make. So I never liked learn it. I have met him once. To. I mean, I've, I've never liked him. I again, I worked with him very briefly barely worked with him, but he was one of the rudest people onset to everyone. I know him Amy Poehler, remarried. I always thought he was the funnier one. She was the funnier one, but he thought he was the funnier. One checks out whatever and no shade on AB polar. I'm sure they were in love and you know, didn't work out. Whatever happens happens, but he, he just seemed like, I think, I don't know. I don't wanna go there. What I do want to say is it's never okay to do anything to anyone onset, but not to Jessica Walter. She is like literally. Nobody should have to go out. But how dare and she's crying and inter. I mean, the thing is this is a transcript who knows what like what it was like if you listened, but it's like just go alter like brackets, something like talking through tears or tearing up or something like that. And it's just like, she's, she's been, I don't know, fifty years as long as she's been an actor. I mean, you Jason Bateman sitting here being like, well, you know, they're difficult people in Hollywood. It's like you're fucking telling someone who's been acting longer than you've been alive asshole. It's like saying, hey, you know, there's some rapist doesn't mean the Harvey Weinstein isn't a good person. It's like there is exactly a reason why he shouldn't be back in rested development. 'cause he treats his cast mates like shit. Yeah, it's pretty horrifying. Like when you. Yeah, it's, it's a, it's a bummer. I don't even. It's like at this point, not even really worth every time. I see a news item that it's like someone actually as it turns out someone's terrible. I'm like, I'm disappointed, but not surprised, and it's not worth reporting..

"Brilliant jason bateman and laura linney are or brilliant in the show i mean laura linney one of my favorite actresses but the work she does here is just phenomenal so both releasing at that show is that most is kind of a genre about sort of average ask people creating a web of lies and than getting trapped in their web of lies and how are they going to get out you know that's that's the genre sopranos to shield breaking about all those shows and ozark is when he's cornered the dude tells the truth right and i love that about it it's such an interesting take it's so cool south ozarks he's in one had a chance to water and i'd recommend it and there is a season do coming so it's pretty cool yeah and finally guys i had a chance to watch a documentary called the beginning uh about the phantom menace have you guys heard this is the documentary be oh yes sixty six minute documentary that is on the dvd of stores of anthony yes and then if first of all it is an amazing documentary so i would just say if you have any curiosity about how the store were spent the ministers made go watches this documentary we realize what heroes the design team is on that movie for i mean i expected watching it to be like oh my gosh this is a like this is the creation of a nonstop train wreck i when i tweeted about i called it the anti lost in the mancha it's like a behind the scenes like nonstop train wreck about a movie that did make it into theaters you know like that's that's why it and tell us launch a bit.
