Fresh update on "jarrett stidham" discussed on NFL Live

"Style of offense when it's really humming. Yeah, no doubt. Anytime you're run game can be affected then your play action pass game can really be dynamic. To a talk about lodo, like we've given him every opportunity. Now they got weapons, he's got the perfect scheme. He's getting every opportunity to be successful. He better put up or shut up this shit because if he doesn't, they'll be a new quarterback in Miami next year. And I'm afraid for two. Maybe we've just seen the best of him so far. I don't want to write him off and send a guy, I can't get better, but it's going to be really tough, I think, for him to solidify his starting job. Not only this year, but moving into the future next year. Yeah, I mean, he's certainly been given all of the weapons around him and all of these great tools to have success to your point book, the pressure is on. Let's see what he can do. And our podcast ESPN daily, we ask questions that reveal the deeper side of sports. Did you hear from a certain former president? That's what I'm here to ask you. Did you ever have any sense that baseball was eating away at drew? So what inspired that name across sports and society? Did you kill Lorenzen Wright, chera? I'm Pablo Torre, and ESPN daily connects the best stories in sports to the final score, wherever you listen. I'm glad you're with us on NFL live and back to our developing story today. Colin Kaepernick getting an opportunity to work out for the Las Vegas Raiders this week, Adam Schefter, what more should we know about this? Laura, the workout is happening today. And this is the first workout for Colin Kaepernick since he was exiled from the National Football League. The last time he visited with an NFL team was May of 2017, when he flew to Seattle, Laura. That was 5 years ago. And the fact that the Raiders are going to have him work out today tells you that there has to be some level of interest in sonning him that this is not just some cursory look at a free agent quarterback. Nobody else has been willing to do what the Raiders are doing today and that is to bring in Colin Kaepernick who oh, by the way, has been working out in Las Vegas, went to school in Nevada, gets to stay in that area if the Raiders opted to sign him, they have Derek Carr Jarrett Stidham and Nick mullens on the roster, but they're taking a look to see if adding Kaepernick would be in addition to that quarterback room right now. Adam, thanks for the latest today on this developing story. We'll continue to follow it. A reminder that it's been 1970 days books since we saw Colin Kaepernick in an actual NFL game as you hear this news, what do you think? Well, first of all, I think it's real. The fact that there will have put their name on a workout and bring him inside their building, that way they know the coach and the GM are going to be out there watching. That's number one. Number two, I think we all realize that Colin Kaepernick is one of the best 64 quarterbacks in the world considering 32 teams have at least two quarterbacks on the roster. So I think if he goes out and shows that he's capable and he's in shape and his arm is ready to go, yeah, I think it's good for him. We all know why the Colin Kaepernick wasn't on an NFL team. Everyone knew that it had to do with the politics and all the kneeling in the flag and all that good stuff. So at least maybe or at least there's one team that's willing to go past that and put their name on a workout and have their head coach and their GM and have Colin Kaepernick on an NFL field in an NFL building and to me that's progress. It should have been done a long damn time ago, but at least we got progress today. In his career as a starting quarterback, Colin Kaepernick had a 28 and 30 record, led the forty-niners to Super Bowl 47, and Mike, when you think about the style of play in the NFL now, a lot's changed since we saw Kaepernick before. How do you think he would fit in the style of play that we were accustomed to seeing him play in a current NFL offense and what we're dealing with right now in the league? Laura, I think he's an ideal fit. You know, when you think about Josh McDaniels and some of the play action boots that he likes to do, that's a perfect fit for what Colin Kaepernick does so well. So again, I think when they work him out today and they look at the complimentary pieces around like Josh Jacobs now devonte Adams, he would be a great backup to Derek Carr. And again, I think this is also a referendum on what they think about Nick Mullins and Jared stem. That's what you're doing this time of year. So if this workout goes well, which I expect it would, I would try some immediately. So he has the best chance to be successful once training camp comes around and being every OTA be in the mini camp. So I think it's a good fit. And if I'm the Raiders, there has to be a sense of urgency as well. Yeah, I mean, we'll see if the Raiders don't bring him in. How many other teams might be interested? Jeff, you mentioned off the top of the show as this developing story came through what you remembered about Kaepernick when he was on the field, you know, now it's been since 2017. It just remind everybody exactly how good a player how good a quarterback what impressed you about him when you saw him play. Yeah, listen, he was running up and down the field. I was with the Green Bay Packers, my final season, the NFL, we're in the playoffs out in San Fran. And I'm literally watching this guy just take the ball up and down the field with his legs, throw bombs on us like he just lit us up. They ended up going to the Super Bowl, obviously that season and lost to the ravens, but he played lights out football and again, I know people talk about his record and where he is, but to Mike T's point, the way the game has changed and moved more towards mobile quarterbacks and doing the things that Josh McDaniels likes to do. He had Tim Tebow when he was in Denver on his first in as a head coach. He likes to get guys out of the pocket and if Kaepernick has stayed in the shape, he looks to have stayed in. Like when we see the brief things, whether it be at Michigan or him out there throwing the ball with different guys in different workouts. If he's there, you would want to give him a chance 'cause the book's point, if he makes you a better team, he's the best are better than the two guys you got backing them up. Your best 53 are who you want to walk in with. So I don't think he leaves. I think they bring him in to sign him in all honesty. Yeah, a book, I'm thinking about Josh McDonald's at the quarterbacks that he's had. Obviously you think about Tom Brady, you think about some of these guys. Has he ever really had a mobile quarterback? Like what we think that Colin Kaepernick could bring to the table with the type of scheme that he wants to run? Well, I don't think he's had anybody just like Colin Kaepernick. You can talk about Cam Newton McCann Newton to me was on the backside of his career. If Colin Kaepernick is in good shape and he's fast and he's a good weight, Josh mcdaniel has never had anyone like that and that's got to be intriguing to him when you can start talking about some of the play action getting a quarterback on the edge. We saw a little bit of it with Cam Newton, but cam was beat up the shoulder of the physicality took its toll. I think the Raiders are licking their chops. If you can get a healthy Colin Kaepernick that can still push the football down the field, he was dynamic at his best Laura. Again, we will probably find out what's going on here pretty soon. Adam Schefter just confirmed at the top of this block that this workout happened today with the Raiders and the Raiders do have some questions regarding the backup QB position. Right now they have four quarterbacks on the roster, but only Derek Carr has over a thousand career pass attempts. You see it there. After Nick Mullins, it's Jarrett Stidham and undrafted rookie chase garbers. Time for one more thing before we go. In preparing for the match taking place on June 1st, where Tom Brady, that's next week, and Aaron Rodgers will tee off against Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen Brady posted this golf swing on Twitter today. A pretty sinks the shot from the fairway. Patrick Mahomes took notice and jabbed at his competitor. He said, mahomes sweeting, not gonna lie pretty impressive, too bad. You wasted it a week early. Guys, I just want to show a thumbs here. Does anyone believe that this is real? As we bring you guys back on Cameron in a second, I want to know thumbs up here down. Is this real?.

Patriots Sign Quarterback Brian Hoyer to a One-Year Deal

"Going on with the Patriots. Obviously, the biggest news item in the last 24 hours. Brian Hoyer is once again. Greg Choice once again. Belichick can't quit him. Brian Hoyer is once again, back with the Patriots in the quarterback room. Wait, the big news isn't James Ferentz coming back, I was. Prepare for a hold James Ferentz, whole interior, office behind breakdown. Let's do it. So yeah, horror is back. I think this is fantastic for the Patriots. This is something that you've talked about. I wrote in my column, the night that Mac Jones was drafted, I said, by the way, can we get Brian Hoyer now in the building, sign them to basically be Mac Jones's Tudor and I believe from them alive talked to, that's why he's here. Now look Brian Hoyer. No matter what you think of him, he's no slouch, he's been around, he can get, he's, he's a good emergency backup quarterback. Who knows what's going to happen? But right now, of course, the popular thing Nick is to say, oh, well, this must mean something about Cam Newton or Jarrett Stidham. They must not like what they see maybe and they're looking to replace them as far as I know. None of that is true. All I know is look. It's met. This is when you you get down to now that we're past covid-19.

Stop with the Cam Newton nonsense

"Season officially upon us. We've got a lot of lot of stories a lot of rumors lot of things floating out there that may not make people happy. It's the long dark Patriots podcast. We're going to talk about everything and anything related to the Patriots particularly their quarterback situation, of course always rate review subscribe all that good stuff regarding Patriots podcast with Nick cattles nickel be back for another episode later on this week. I'm John zanis filling in and the story du jour or do week or whatever you want to say here appears to be a Cam Newton wage. His name is resurfacing and the Patriots quarterback starch and Greg. I can't I can't think of Anything worse to happen right now if you're a Patriots fan right now and and all you want is New Hope. Okay. This is a new hope the possibilities are endless blank canvas money draft picks Capital. Theoretically the Patriots could do a lot of different things some of which could be very exciting and interesting and I can't think of one thing that would just throw a wet blanket all over over all over that any more than bringing back Cam Newton. Yeah John, it's it's weird. I I started hearing the chatter on all the Sports Talk radio station a week and I'm like what the hell is going on? Like it's basically like Cam Newton's become it's similar to some of the debates that you hear in politics like where they just like Stoke fear in people to generate interest in their shows and things like that. It's like, ooh now Cam Newton's the boogeyman that like who they might be bringing Cam Newton back just to get people to react like people people need to settle down and this is why you suck. Had to be SJ this why you listen to this podcast because you know things like how last offseason when everybody was going nuts about Saddam was a guy in Cherry stem is going to be this and Jerry system is going to be that and he's going to be the next guy. You know, what did I tell you from January of last year over a year ago. I told you that he was not be the starter that there was going to be some sort of Veteran competition. So, you know, welcome to coming here where you where you get well informed you don't have to worry about the hysteria. You just get straight facts and and what's going on. So here's where we are. We Cam Newton and this is something that I've been talking about since the end of his Patriots season, which is it's always been a possibly that Cam Newton could come back here. It all depends on what happens with the market and who they end up with the quarterback and this and that but for anyone to suggest the Cam Newton month Is going to be re-signed being the definite number one. That's what we want starter here next year. That's not going to happen. It just it just isn't in and here's why. We've also sort of touched on this but just to sort of reinforce the point. I think what happened this past season is the Patriots realized and and look we've talked about it that there wasn't really a plan back to check understood that there weren't enough chairs for the quarterbacks and somebody was going to be left could have been Jameis Winston could have been Cam Newton could have been Andy Dalton could have been anybody. It happened to be Cam Newton and they said they'd make it work. It did not work and what I think John what happened was and actually I know this happened the Patriots realized after the Cam Newton experiment that not every quarterback can work in the system and that's not to say Cam Newton still not capable of playing good football. I think that he is do I think it could be better with a better Supporting Cast absolutely I do and do I think God Part of the problem last year. Yes, but at its basis in this scheme, you need a quarterback who sees the totality of what's going on in the field. You need someone who's going to win before the snap. You need somebody who's going to see something on the defense say that's this is about to be a bad play here. We're checking to this and Cam Newton outside of you know, he might he might have alerted a few plays here and there but not even close to what we've seen in and look I'm not going to compare him to Tom Brady. Nobody's going to be Tom Brady, but The Baseline Jimmy Garoppolo would have been a lot better. Jarrett Stidham probably would have been a lot better in terms of what he could even when Jarrett Stidham got in John. We saw things like Palm Coast him would change things that the line that's the Baseline in this offense. And that's where it starts. The number one tenant in this offense is don't run any bad place when the quarterback is incapable of doing that for whatever reason that's that's strike. Number one strike. Number two is understanding after the snap. What's going to happen? What is the defense going to do? What is that going to mean in in reaction time? Like if I see the if I see the free safety all of a sudden rotate from too deep to single single life safety. I should know like that who's going to be open, but great. Let me ask you real quick. Cuz everything you're saying makes perfect sense, but did you need a year of did the Patriots need a year of Cam Newton to know that he wasn't that guy? Is it did you think he was that guy walking through the door? Is there anybody really smart Personnel people out there who thought? Oh can't might be able to adapt to this Patriots dial offense. It didn't seem sensible fit. Anyway. This is a guy who's always had accuracy problems who who plays a totally different style of ball. I mean, I don't know why you would have brought him in the first place. If your idea was to offer a patriot style offense

Patriots Knocked Out of Playoff Race for First Time Since 2008

"Patriots who i said would not make the playoffs are not making the playoffs here. Is bill belichick with this loss. You guys were eliminated from playoff contention first time since a wave. Just wondering your reaction to that does that. We win deserve to win tonight. So yeah pretty much. So and i started look at cam. Newton's numbers. Because if i'm new england do i play jarrett stidham the last two games. Do i want to see what i have do. They know what they have do. I just ride this out. And have cam newton as my starting quarterback in his last seventeen starts so this goes back two years cam. Newton has thrown. in seventeen games. Five touchdown passes twelve interceptions. He is had almost five hundred throws over those seventeen games. Peter king points out in his column today. Aaron rodgers has had four hundred seventy seven pass attempts through the same time period. He's thrown forty touchdowns cams thrown five. And i know coming back from arthroscopic surgery on his rotator cuff and for those of us who've had rotator cuff surgery just coming back for a normal life. Not trying to fit a football into a small window is really difficult. And i don't think cam has come all the way back from kovin that but cam. We're not going to see cam twenty fifteen. Never gonna come close to. That can still be a quarterback who starts in the nfl. Is he a quarterback who is going to be a backup quarterback. And i think that's going to be the next step to decide what happens with the patriots. What direction they go in to the go after quarterback do they keep cam. Do give him more. Money is jarrett stidham as that experience experiment over as

Should the Patriots replace Cam Newton with Jarrett Stidham?

"Think this is where we need to start because it's where everybody is starting when we talk about the Patriots and where we're at with Cam Newton right now in terms of the Patriots quarterback of the here-and-now home and also maybe even looking Beyond here and now to the 2021 season even and here in New England you turn on Boston sports radio, and I'm not trying to pick on those guys, but there are definitely talking a lot about Jarrett Stidham and the possibility of benching Cam Newton for Jarrett Stidham. I think they're crazy. But that that's a topic for another day. Mostly I want to focus on what are your opinions right knee about how cam is playing and how he can obviously improve from objectively. What was a very bad game on Sunday against the Cardinals whether you're a chemist and or a cam hater. Yeah, and it wasn't dead. A game against Arizona and Arizona. First of all, I think you have to remember that Arizona's defense is a lot different than Houston's defense. It's a lot different than Seattle's defense back in week to that Houston game. That's you know game those were two games with Jim actually got the passing game going and you felt hey maybe they could put together a passing game that could actually be effective Arizona see on their athletic. They fly all over the place Isaiah Simmons budda Baker. Like they have guys that can play they have some different things and they certainly they were putting an egg nine guys in the box of times. I'm sure having you saw that as well. I know you have from some of the work you've done they were basically dare in New England like go ahead. S game by throwing the football and it looked like they couldn't, you know, they got a couple breaks at the end with a missed field-goal and Isaiah Simmons penalty then put them in position to win, but they didn't win that game because of the passing game, but you know, that often said, I think we all have to sort of take a step back and realize a couple of things one. You mentioned I studied quarterbacks. Each week at USA Today. I have to do what we call a QB camp where I put up five of my quarterback videos of the most notable quarterback performances. There are some weeks friends. It's hard to find five good quarterback package, which is league-wide It's just tough. This is one of those weeks like you might get Baker Mayfield than that because there's just not great quarterback players Patriots fans were spoiled from two decades of Tom Brady where we took the best at the quarterback position weekend and week out but then when you take a step back and you don't have that and you see guys like, you know, Derek Carr and his high variance play or Baker Mayfield in his high variance player. Look at Carson waves, I mean talk about somebody that's regressed. He's regressed all the way back to his senior year at North Dakota State quarterback plays tough. And right now we have a quarterback. That's high variance. Well, that's one thing. I think we need to remember the other is this he came in late in a strange year in the midst of a pandemic with no training camp more minimal training camp. No minicamps. No OTAs, no prestige. James be tough complicated offense to run that has so many different moving parts. You've read The Playbook, you know, Evan every road has like six different variations. I'm trying to do is hard. There are some play books that are easy. It's like oh, yes, this makes sense Bruce Arians Playbook. It's kind of easy. Nothing really changes Josh McDaniels doing the Patriots Playbook. It's like quantum physics for me. Like I I can't figure it out. And so to try to do that in the midst of all this is difficult. So with that context, I think you know, if you want to get into the home Jared versus cam debate. I don't really think there is one because as you pointed out this week on Twitter Bill Belichick has seen Jarrett Stidham now for almost two years. He's seen him every day in practice if Jake was going to be the answer to what fixed to what else is Patriots passing game. Yes, he would play him but he's not so that tells you what you need to know about Jackson them. I was on Jarrett Stidham home. Right before they signed Camp. I remember I wrote the peace and said look Jack said it was a planet quarterback everybody and I'm so glad I snuck in at the ad. Well, look if they could get can do it for cheap short not be great. But Jarod said it was a planet like two weeks later. I signed Cam Newton Cam right now gives them the best chance to win games. Is it through the passing game most weeks? Probably not, you know this week might be a get right opportunity. But if I you know, if for the 2021 season, I still think canvas done enough to earn the chance to win this job with a full complement of training camp preseason, all that stuff of the engine needs to get better at Short of the mechanics break. Absolutely not do they matter. Sometimes they actually do but right now he's the best shot they've got week in and week out to win games.

"White responded as only Dana can to that article in the New York Times. There was an article In New York Times today that was very critical of the execution. That guy that Guy. That guy thinks what he has to say what he writes good for him. He's he's pulling good traffic. I don't give up don't give. I'm going to defend him on that and let me say another sport. I'm going to defend college football. I like college football but college. Football wants to come back and they're gonNA get a lot of criticism for it in college. Football is going to get a lot of criticism for it. Because in some instances schools won't allow students back. But you're going to have football back and it's going to get a lot of blowback and here's why and Defend College football. Because I I think college football has been paying all the bills for my entire life. None of these other sports make money. And if you're the top earner company top sales guy you get a little more leeway on the corporate credit card for an expensive dinner. Well it's Susan is our top salesperson. Let's not let's not flag it. And that's the way life works college. Football's weird in that. It pays for all the bills but often gets the most criticism. The coaches make too much money wanting to pay the players. Let me taste you something. I'm GonNa Defend College football when they go back even if occasionally a student gets co vid on the team and that'll happen or a coach or they go back and the students aren't there because they been paying the bills for everything everything for ever everything. Nothing in college sports outside of a handful of college basketball programs you con- women do men makes any money. It's all a losing proposition. Everything hemorrhages money. I mean and Ohio. State is a well-capitalized Athletic Department. They got like thirty six programs. I have been told that if they don't do football they're going to be in chaos. They're going to have to slice and dice. A dozen programs okay. So before you get up you know. Y- you get pious and you start lecturing college football remember if you pay every bill in the family and the extended family and the extended families family. "Your stress and less need is the, and it's been an interesting general manager career nine seasons you go from one part of the country to the other part, the divisions become the best in Football Russell. Wilson's now in the division. Kyle Shanahan the rams had a step back year last year, but it should be acknowledged despite some injuries upfront. They went nine and seven in. Is the toughest division, football, and less need is now joining us via the Coward Global Satellite Network Ninth Year as Rams. General Manager drafted five pro bowlers as a GM since two thousand, twelve, an offensive player of the year defensive player of the year clearly knows what he's doing. Let's start with a pithy question. That means nothing I like your new logo I like your new outfits. New uniforms got some pushback so internally. Everybody's taking shots at it, and this is L. A.. It's a creative town. You know some movies flop some hit. What was the internal discussions as your uniforms were getting? Of criticism and discussion points on the Internet. With the interesting thing internally because our players had seen them, modeled them put them on. They were really jacked about him so. They're the they're the closer to the millennial or whatever generation we have gone the ones that really get into this so feeling the passion from players that was important My teenagers were Jack About him so I think that that's a big thing. When when the young generation likes him, but I. I go back to this. This documentary on on Air Jordan. That's going on right now, right? The last dance and I remember I think it was Letterman who was maybe. Let's call it criticizing the Nike Air Jordan. He made a good comments, said you know what it's all about basketball. It's all about winning up. People will will like them if we win and unsure winning helped, but I do think that shoes probably gonNA probably as many or more shoes than any other shoe, so of eventually change always gets a little pushback initially, but I do think things are stabilized states sets in and the and the fans will really get behind these unions. When you look I love California. It's full of smart independent thinkers with more regulations here. Our taxes are a little higher here, but I think it's worth it and I love living in Los Angeles and it's always been a place that attracts high school. Football recruits free agents and BA stars people like Los Angeles owners like GM's like it. It's a great place. It's endless dreams, but for the first time in my life with this virus. They've been a little more restrictive. Are you concerned as a general manager that you may have to train out of state? There's no concern there I. think like all of us you know the data's going to lead us and when I say US right, that'll be the NFL. That'll be the rams. That'll be the state of California on what's best in that moment. That's still dicamba, I. Do know all of us in the NFL us with the rams. For sure whether it's a playing I called the London Games. The the the Games over the pond, the the relocation from Saint Louis to Los Angeles. those. We're used to moving and adjusting and I think the best thing to do is planned for a really good training camp, a really good season, and from there wherever it occurs just moved that plan there. You know I have said I think you know what you're doing. You're obviously a good drafter, but I didn't love the Brandin. Cooks deal and I have said before on the air so I'll say it to your face when you're not here I've said sometimes I. Think less even though you're from the SEC, which is all defense, right? I said sometimes less falls in love with offensive stars and Sinema Tad early. You've heard that for more than just me. Read the papers. You hear things that you signed girly. I did back you on the golf move if you find the guy and you believe them, and I believe in Jared Goff and you pay him and you pay 'em early. It'll within two years. You made the right deal. But what are you making the criticism from many that you paid girly? Early Brandin cooks too much that that that you have a great offensive coach that's going to elevate even average offensive personnel. Is that a fair criticism? I think the blueprint. To try to piece this together. is a first of all right. Even Alabama's going away from defense. You see there Dan. Firepower these days, so were modeled after Alabama, but not really we when we set out and we hired Sean obviously brilliant offensive mine has become an evolved into a really really brilliant head football coach. We have in in the blueprint of a lot of successful teams. Some of those teams that when I was waiting to get on the show. You mentioned that that has one consistently in this league they. Started with a head coach who ended up having a success with a rookie, you know a a quarterback on his rookie contract in a lot of those teams went to the Super Bowl with that head coach, and that quarterback on his a rookie contract, so we definitely WANNA. Keep feeding that offense. We've been successful The last years of you know scoring a lot of points being one of the top one, the two to three to four to five teams often, so we wanna keep feeding that beast, and and I get all of the other positions, but on a simply put a hiring people acquiring players. Players who can gain yards and explosive chunks, and and move the chain score touchdowns. It is not a bad thing. It is interesting we. We said this a couple months ago. Join I talked about this that. If you look over the last five or six drafts, maybe even four or five that the players that have actually overachieved almost all offensive is that if you're on the bubble and you just don't know and your staff, arguing just go offense. You've been a very good drafter again. You have drafted five pro bowlers as a GM since two thousand twelve and a player of the offensively and defensively. Is You're drafting. Forget free agency. Is you're drafting less changing because of the modifications to the rules that if you're on, the fence, just goes good as Khalil Mack is. He can't change a game like a great slot receiver. That's a that's an excellent point that you make and I think you. With us with the Rams in each team would be different. There are still some teams that. Are maybe a run by a defensive head coach in. It's going to be cured more toward defense and lot of times the defense coaches will maybe gear the offense more toward a bigger offensive line and ground and pound, and and we've seen those teams be successful, but whatever? Your internal philosophy is whatever it is that you think the coaches want to do to try to win. That game on Sunday and win more came on Sunday than lose and get to the tournament The best thing GM can do is is try to do his. In in feeding that coach, the players are going to help execute his his system. so-fi stadium looks amazing. I fly over it. I used to fly over it more when I could fly. It's been more difficult last couple of months, but when I fly over it, it looks pretty close. We also know a that..

He just hobbled around and I. Love Him Linebacker, Patrick Willis who years ago I called is the number eleven pick in the draft. The steal of the draft hadn't played in over half a decade by the way Matt Ryan. Had Two seasons of a passer rating over one hundred. That's Russell Wilson's career average. And so I thought it was a slight to Russell Wilson, but what's new? Pete Carroll slights him. The organizations lights in. It's just the world lives in joining me now via coward.

"I asked if we could get Jeff Gordon on tomorrow show. It's Friday if we can get Jeff Gordon from his house or wherever I love to have him by the way. There's an epic rant out on the Internet. Is Jeff Gordon Tomorrow? Boom that's what we asked for. We Got Jeff Gordon Tomorrow. Good Dude. I've had two or three interviews with. He's actually very funny and he's Great. It's there's an epic rant right now on the Internet from Dana White and Dana White and I have gone back and forth. Dana white swore me. A said terrible things about me hurt. My feelings didn't sleep for weeks and I questioned something about Dana White once. Dane is very aggressive. I'm a fan of Dana. I went up to Dana after David said something about me and Blah Blah Blah and said stuff about him and we're both outspoken. People and I and I went up and I said Dina. I'm always gonNA respect you. I know what you've gone through Dana White and the UFC. There's a reason Dana made three hundred and fifty million bucks when they sold. Ufc Dana doesn't care what you think and in this virus. If you're running a sport you better not worry about what the New York Times says because strong people are needed. This is GONNA be imperfect. Were managing this thing. At best. Professional athletes are the safest of all Americans. Because they're in the right age space and they're in incredible shape so Dana White fired back at a negative report from the New York Times. And it's a little kostic and it's a little over the top but I've said this before. Thank God we have states like California that Lien Laugh. Thank God we have states like Florida that often lean right or Texas. We need both absolutely and we need everybody in the media loves Adam Silver. I don't think he's been strong enough. Everybody in the media pushes back on Roger Goodell. I think he's been great through this. You gotta be able to handle blowback because there's a lot of people on the interweb that are just negative. They wake up at six in the morning on a Saturday and they wanNA complain about life you give him positive covert news and they go crazy. There's a lot of positive news. More positive than negative flatten. The curve hospitalization. Surge did not happen. So Dana White's response hopefully we get it. There's a lot of swearing. I'll play it for you if I get it. Here's joy yet needs a lot of editing. Here's joy.

"Joe Fresh out. What's going on and I? I'M ALL WORKED UP SUPPORTING RUSSELL. Wilson. I guess by the way when he was at Wisconsin. You're like an encyclopedia for college. Football do you remember Russell? I remember him at. Nc State. Don't do you remember how he changed. Wisconsin football for a year. Dear you go back to that point now. We've seen it broken. It seems like every single year but remember calling to that point. That was the most efficient college football season. We've ever seen from a quarterback he set the qbr standard or rating standard for the history of college football. In one season. He went in there and was a captain right away. He is the reason the catalyst why this graduate transfer rule has become so invoked throughout college football because what happened Wisconsin and they almost went won. The rosebowl remember was the great. Tcu team with Andy. Dalton I think tank Carter was a linebacker that actually beat them in the Rose Bowl or else they would've been rose bowl champions. That was that was a really good football team and the reason was Russell. Wilson was an fascinating year so I was told a couple of days ago that expect the PAC twelve at least to play a condensed PAC. Twelve schedule no traveling. No OUT OF CONFERENCE OUT OF REGION. It is going to be condensed if they can get it in the fall and with California's legislators Governor Mayor of L. A. We're not sure that's true. Your your thought on Games being played just regionalized big ten verse Big Ten. Sec Verse Sec. How's that land for you? Okay so the first thing is is is nothing has been decided firmly and they're talking about all sorts of Situations and and plans for the season. I think I would start with this call and I wanna make this abundantly clear. I absolutely believe there will be college. Football this fall in some capacity. There's no doubt in my mind. It's GonNa Happen Now. What it looks like that. Then we get into this minutia. What does it look like? Are we just GONNA DO CONFERENCE SCHEDULES? I've heard every commissioner and a lot of these talk about trying to get to those conference schedules right away when the weather is warm and when they feel like they have a window of opportunity early in the season the potentially play just conference teams. Like you said it would reduce the amount of travel. The hard part with that is that there is some some large revenue games that are scheduled right now in the Non League so An in particular Notre Dame is out there looking around looking at their AC schedule with their scheduling partnership. And what they could possibly do. Outside of this now I wanna go back to where you initially started. Which is the PAC twelve when you talk about they that they were talking about convinced schedules and so on and so forth. I want to be very clear about this. Larry Scott does not have the political capital to get that conference to behave as one. Okay so what's going to happen in the PAC twelve. If there's a conference that is most likely to be fractured? One school playing in one state against some other team Regardless of what's going on elsewhere in the conference it will be the PAC twelve. In fact I've been told by multiple sources that the have had conversations behind the conferences back. That would tell each other if unable to play via a mirrors ruling a state governors ruling. You guys go ahead and look out for yourself and in fact some of the eighties in states that really believed that they will have a ball have offered specifically the California schools and some have offered. Even the Oregon schools the chance to come play home games in their state. So if we make any sort of assertion about what we think that this is going to look like I think we would be jumping or way ahead of where they're at in the process right now because everything's on the table in the PAC twelve and make no bones about the s or the one driving that bus because Larry Scott does not have the political capital to get them to all behave as one so I was saying this earlier. I don't believe in these garage bands. That just never got a break. It doesn't matter the Beatles weren't even from here you twos not from here. If you're talented today America find you and compensate you ricky Jay Vases not from here. We found him and we love him. I don't buy that Jarrett Stidham. Is this secret sauce. He got drafted in the fourth round. Nobody was outraged. He played at a massive power with NFL guys everywhere. He beat Alabama. And now all these football insiders are like. Oh He's special. Oh He's Bella. Check was willing to move off Brady after we on a super bowl with Garoppolo Bella check though with an older brady of a bad season. Wanted Tom to resign with Jarrett. Stidham there is it possible stint. You saw him play jokes. He's okay average and remember he was a transfer you know he started his career. Baylor Not Many People. Remember that and remember how hard you've been on our boy. The first big Joe Borough for having to transfer away from Ohio state. Yes but I I will tell you this that there is no secret sauce and I think we attribute as sports fans in particular in the football arena. I think that we attribute way too much secret sauce to New England right. I think a large reason why Tom Brady struggled. Because Bill Belichick the GM failed them who they have to throw to his eggs in the basket of what Antonio Brown like you know what are we. What are we talking about so it to a large extent? I think that people view New England and the quarterback position at New England through this lens that they're going to win eleven games and and Y. You know almost make the playoffs regardless of what happened with Tom Brady because of what happened with him when he tore. Acl Remember when Matt Cassel Won. Eleven Games missed the playoffs and it was like. Oh My Gosh. Bill belichick greatest thing since sliced bread and he might be the greatest coach of all time. But I will say. There's no secret sauce and bill belichick would not have offered. Tom Brady contract. Even if Tom Brady felt like that was a bit of a slight. If he felt like jared cinemas a better option in no symbol of reality is Jarrett. Stidham may better option at quarterback for the New England Patriots. Tom Brady period you. You have a baseball career and a football background. So I was saying there are athletes in my life. That do things that are not explained. Russell Wilson never gets hit. You cannot explain Lamar does Carson. Wentz does mahomes Russell never gets hit Mariano Rivera one pitch. Nobody hit for twenty years. That's never happened in the history of baseball when people have a special ability. And we can't. It's not quantifiable. They become great Dennis. Rodman rebound are ever wise skinny. Six seven plan against seven footers. It makes no sense. I can explain to. I believe the only quarterback in this class that does stuff that can explain. He's innate. There are instincts here. He's not the biggest. His arm is okay. He's not a great athlete. And he's the number one high school quarterback he comes in as a freshman. He's great when I see special. All bets are off that most of the great app their special so I think I can explain burl and just in Herbert and Jordan love. I can't explain to does that. Make any sense. Just whip in here with but I love to as a player. You know that you and I have talked about to extensively. I think he is a brilliant player. There's no doubt his biggest flaw as I've told you before is that he thinks he's more elusive than he is. He actually thinks he's Russell Wilson when he's not and he does get hit and he does get wrapped up from behind which causes the ankle injuries which he's had two surgeries on. It caused the hip fracture So that's concerning to me now. His play from the pocket as UNCANNY. It's fantastic love is quick delivery. He's SMART. He knows where to go with the football. I would say that he end to a large extent. Joe Borough as well. I mean they got to throw to sue unbelievable players. Maybe the best was wide. Receiver on Alabama's team wasn't even available in the draft and they still had a couple of guys go in the first round from a wide receiver standpoint so he certainly was a benefactor of having great players around him I will. I will tell you this though that. I don't believe that there's a quarterback even Joe Borough who I'm so high on your explaining something that's like unexplainable and and I would call them independent contributors. It doesn't matter what's going on around them. They will come in and they will perform thought. Andrew luck was that level. I thought John Elway was that level. I thought Peyton manning to to a large extent was that level. In fact you reference my baseball career just quickly I was in the padres organization in the year. Two Thousand and two thousand and one. Tony Gwynn was still there and one day spring training. I got the had the opportunity to sit at a table and have lunch with them. And listen to Tony. Gwynn talk about hitting and I was looking across. I was like nothing about this. Guy's fish. Physical stature would suggest that he's one of the greatest hitters in the history of the sport and yet listening to him talk about the philosophy of hitting and pit selection the way that he approached each at bat it was just a a light bulb real. Of course his brain his mind is why. He's so great later that spring actually. The padres did a minor league deal with Ricky Henderson. If you go back you'll check this out. He was in AAA for a big portion of that spring. Training and Sean burroughs was a third baseman. At the time for the triple eight team. He got hurt. His arm was sore. He was going to be down for a week so they just said. Hey Kid from rookie ball me. Go play third base in baton. Sean Burroughs place in the lineup so I hit second behind Rickey Henderson. For a week in spring training in the year two thousand and one it was one of the most fascinating experiences in my life. In fact he would constantly look back at me before he went up to bat as I was walking to the on Deck Circle and colony. You'd be like two three and I was like what what in. What is Ricky Henderson telling me numbers about and then I finally asked our skipper? Jeff Gardner outside Gardy. Why does ricky keep keep telling me a number? Before he goes his he goes hello. Hey Rook that's the number of pitches. He expects you to take so he can steal second. I'll say oh I'm out there swinging from my heels not knowing what was going on but it goes to your point you talk about these. Innate contributors the greatness that can be measured. We're seeing it in the last dance. We I saw firsthand with Ricky Henderson. And Tony Gwynn watching ricky steel basis. Well into his forties. How his first step was as powerful as quick as I've Ever Seen Tula is not that right. I just don't think that he's an independent contributor yet. We haven't seen him go through college football season unscathed from a health standpoint. So I think that there's some room for him to go and prove it out there in the NFL. He's he's got some great qualities but I don't think that I'm going to sit here and say like hands down. He's got things that I can't explain because I think that you can certainly get better. If you're too good talking to you Klatten like hearing those old baseball stories. I want you put a put a pipe in you know once in a while and you just sit back on the port suburban Bourbon and talk baseball stories with Joel. That's a hell of a podcast to be honest with you. How Bad Ricky? Ricky Henderson stealing second base while I'm swinging from my heels. He probably was like who? Is this. Get him out of here a year later? I was at the University of Colorado. Joel Klatt Ladies and Gentlemen Thanking Joel. Appreciate that but pro. Football Focus has agreed to come on the show. I'm considering it before the end of the hour in next hour. Who HAVE NEXT HOUR? Well the dolphins a win because a tour. The rams sales will go through the roof. They'll go through the roof this year. I Love the New Jersey. I think they will. Great wasn't a fan of the logo. Alabama's team wasn't even available in the draft, and they still had a couple of guys. Go in the first round from a wide receiver standpoint, so he certainly was a benefactor of having great players around him. I will I will tell you this though that I. Don't believe that there's a quarterback. Even Joe Borough who I'm so high.

"Heard good to Evian. I saw this where there's a story out that should compete for the dolphins Miami Dolphins starting job right now as long as the medical staff in Miami clears him. One of the reasons I think too I is the best prospect in this draft is because a lot of what he does. You can't really It's not quantifiable. And when you get people like that and we have examples of it it usually becomes great. Let me give you three examples. The first one we've talked about Russell Wilson. How can we never get head? He runs like Lamar Jackson. He runs Carson wentz eight years in the NFL. He never gets hit. You can't really explain. He runs backwards. You're not supposed to do that. He runs he shorter than you're supposed to. He never gets hit. There's an instinct with him that nobody else has. Even the Mar- doesn't have it went doesn't have it. Steve. Young didn't have it. He never gets hit you when you can't explain it it's special. Let me give you a second one. Mariano Rivera he had one pech. For Twenty years he had one pitch. It was a cutter. Nobody could hit it. He got old the pitch got slower. Nobody could hit it. You can't explain it. There's nobody in baseball. That has one pitch. He had one and he's the most unhittable revolt time. Batters knew it was coming as he got older. It got slower kid one pitch and it was often better against the better hitters. You can't explain it that special. Let me give you another Dennis. Rodman six seven and a half skinny guy is the all time best rebounder in league history. How's that possible? He played in era with Chemo. Shack and big seven-foot centers. And this skinny guy was the best rebounder. What that doesn't make any sense wasn't like he was the strongest. He wasn't the tallest he wasn't the best jumper wasn't the most powerful he hustle but lots of guys hustle. Larry Bird Hustled. Guys jumped into the stands house. Dennis Rodman the best rebounder ever. You can't quantify it. Russell Wilson Mariano Rivera Dennis Rodman when you can't qualify it. It's called special and those people usually become great Mark Sanchez on the other day. Mark Sanchez. Good College player and you know. Nfl had some success watches film. This is what he does and he tried to explain to. He couldn't really explain some of it. Sometimes you can't even articulate what he did on film and it leaves you scratching your head because it's so good and so fast and so instinctive. You're like WHOA. How did you know that? And can't really get the words out like he doesn't even know it's almost like he's processing. What's happening physically in front of him and in the nanoseconds his body's already reacting he's already making decisions that he didn't even know he can make that quickly and he can't even talk about it. Sounds like what the heck is that? How did you know and I I mean it's just uncanny the way he does stuff like that. So mentally twitchy. That's I've never been around anybody like that. That's why I think he's special. I think you can explain Joe Pearl. You can explain Justin. Herbert Justin Herbert's a four points. Student Big strong kid family was athletes. Got a cannon for an arm really good offensive. Line College I think Joe Borough wasn't great until he got a great team around him. He's a good distributor of football when he has protection time and good receivers to a lot of stuff. I can't explain. It's not very big. Didn't have a great arm. Didn't have a huge arm. You not real not real big. He's actually people will tell you. It's not even that great of an athlete. But why was he the number one high school quarterback in the country he was undersized? Never rocket arm wasn't a super athlete. Don't you have to be great at one of those things like John? Elway you were like whole my God. What an arm. Trevor Lawrence size arm. What is it it's the unexplainable and that usually becomes great. I can explain Patrick. Mahomes played in the majors. Guys got ridiculous arm. He's he's all time armed talent. He also has great weapons and one of the great play designers. Ever I can explain the whole Patrick. Mahomes the explain Carson Wentz. Six five rocket arm throws from angles. Tough kid really athletic. I can explain it. I can explain Michael Jordan. I can explain Michael Jordan. Huge hands allowed him to palm it a relentless work ethic and competitive to the point of strange. I can I am by the way had a forty inch vertical big hand super-quick. He had big hands but not huge. Allow them to be quick and shifty. I can explain everything Magic Johnson. He was six nine and a half point. We're no six nine and a half points. He was just so much bigger than everybody and he had the button. He backed in and he had great court vision and he worked his game and he was still at the very end not a great shooter and not a great defender but I could explain. It also happens. He inherited Kareem that helped. But when we can't explain you and there's Mariano Rivera it's hard to explain a lot of guys who the cutter was. I mean Dennis Rodman. Lotta guys hustled. Lot of six seven and a half guys hustled. Well he was skilled not really couldn't shoot. I mean you know. I don't know how to explain it all right so Joel. Klatt top next hour by the way. A doctor Foulsham F. L. season. I think we're going to have an SEC season. I'm not going to predict any of these leagues. I will say today. I feel more positive about baseball and especially the NBA two or three weeks ago but takeaway on this whole thing is it's May. What is the Fourteenth Fifteenth Fourteenth? Okay so we're middle of May I'M NOT GONNA make any big predictions on September fifteenth. I don't really understand governor's doing that. Senators doing that talk show host doing that. I don't know what's going to happen. We've been locked down for a couple of months. We don't have a later issue or a mask issue. We don't appear to have in California testing issue so some things have been solved. Some haven't but I just don't know I've only made one prediction. There will be an SEC football season..

"Global Satellite Network sponsored by Mercedes Benz the best or nothing. By the way I saw pro football focus which I like it's it's a little, wonky and nerdy Peter, but I am and so I like pro football. Focus a lot and I saw this morning. They had Russell. Wilson, as the. Best Player in the decade under Matt Ryan. GRONK miss. Forty five games the decade Patrick Willis retired six years ago. They were above Russell Wilson. You and I have discussed this. There's even a story two days ago. That Cam Newton maybe going to Seattle at some point if you were Russell, Wilson. Wouldn't you say to Yourself Peter? Cam Newton I never get hurt but I. I'm not. I think deep down Russell's too classy of a guy to talk about this stuff, but I think he's bothered. I think he's bothered by this, Du. Well, if you were Russell Wilson in you, we played eight years at his level of football and think of this. He got drafted in two thousand twelve in the middle of the third round. And from that moment he is started every football game. The Seattle seahawks have played. Regular season playoffs. and He's played at an extraordinarily high level. He's the second highest rated quarterback in NFL history. And in those eight years playing at that high level, you know winning a super bowl. He's never got one MVP vote in those eight years. So if I were Russell Wilson I might go to bed at night. Occasionally, be very happy. Yo seemingly very happily married very well compensated and look up at the ceiling occasionally and say what is wrong with people. Yeah. That's that's. That's the minimum I think I would say. I don't have the composure of Russell Wilson by the way the Cam. Newton Cam! Newton Thing to me didn't make sense because I do think cam fits in Pittsburgh behind a quarterback that gets hurt. I think cam and Ben have some similarities in style. I don't think cameras I don't think big bends an off season workout freak. I don't think he even fits in Seattle. I don't think Seattle needs a high profile. Backup are shocked at all. That Pittsburgh hasn't made a run at cam or nobody really has. This is the first discussion of any singular team. Pittsburgh I thought should have hired higher. Should have signed James Winston I think he's very very good for that. Particular offense got a great arm these he's a lot like Rothlisburger and look Cam Newton depending on. You know one of the problems right now. With Judging Cam Newton is. I don't really know who what he is who he is so last year in training camp. He told me that you know he was going to be a different kind of quarterback. You know he wasn't going to run around as much. Changing his style a bit, and then he got hurt again, so we don't really know what Cam Newton is, and that's not being critical. A Cam Newton is just a for the last year and a half. He is either not played, or or had a terrible shoulder injury that he gritty and in the gradient gut. Cam played through. But I don't know whether he is a guy who's going to run around very much whether he's going to be almost exclusively pocket. kind of like Rothlisberger is so that's the biggest problem right now with Cam Newton. We kind of do an autopsy. A word that Kevin wilds on first thing I use the other morning on the Tom Brady relationship with now is former teammates and coaches, and I'm not really interested in it because they wanNA bunch and I don't really care about how they got along. It didn't affect their winning, but there was a story that came out from Gary. Myers New York Daily News reporter that. One of the reasons Brady left. Does he and Josh mcdaniels that relationship deteriorated. And my takeaway was didn't hurt winning. So you know I don't care really, but do you do? Do you buy the report that that is part of it? I have a tremendous amount of respect for Gary I really do. I've known him forever. I. Don't I don't know that Colin I can't say any honestly I. Just can't say anything about it because when I heard it, I said wow. Josh mcdaniels and Tom Brady always seemed joined at the hip to me and I hadn't heard that, but having said that I don't. I don't know I truly don't know so. You know the way I kind of look at this is when a guy leaves a place. There's GonNa be a lot of things that are going be reported about the circumstances surrounding him leaving, but that one I'm just not aware of it, so you recently interviewed Dr Anthony Pfau chief. WHO's a qualifications were never question, but we live in a very partisan time now so if you don't vote on that side. It's very polarizing world. We live in and suddenly this brilliant guy. Were questioning his credentials, which to me is makes no sense at all is laughable, but you interviewed him recently. And what was your takeaway? I mean it's amazing to me. How would he have? Fatty said it's such a hot button issue I. I sent out a tweet I. Think What Day is Thursday Tuesday evening? In which I said basically. F- chief has been doing this. He started studying science in college in Nineteen fifty seven. He's been the head of the most respected. Agency, the National Institutes of Health in the United States since nineteen eighty-four. You'd probably the most respected infectious disease specialist in the United States. And yet over the last ten weeks we tend to think that people who write sports, columns, or talk on sports radio, or who quite honestly, our politicians now are saying that. FAO Cheese a fraud. He's trash. He's no good. In Colin I mean the the amazing thing is. Within an hour, I think I'll have about one hundred thousand likes on that tweet that I had which is five times more than I've ever had, but almost as strenuously is the other side of people saying he's a quack, so I don't I don't get where we are in this country and quite frankly it's ridiculous and disturbing, but as far as. What he said, and what it means for football I mean I asked him flat out. Your obvious, the NFL's obviously going to test every week, and probably more than once a week. All of the players in essential personnel on every team, so if three or four players on a team test positive on a Friday or Saturday is fouled. She said to me you got to shut it down. That means in essence that that team has got sit on the sideline for two weeks in quarantine. And everybody can say hey. Just take those three or four guys out, but here's the problem with just saying that. Number One. A guy on a team can test positive the next day after testing negative, so you almost have to test these players every day, but the other big problem is i. want you to think if your team ex- and you're getting ready to host team, y. and the night before the game four guys on team x test positive. What do you think the player Rep for team? Why is going to say when they get to the stadium on Sunday I? I can tell you what they were going to say. We're not playing against a team. That just had four guys taken out because their positive for the corona virus. So this is this is going to be a very fascinating season. In my opinion, I think the NFL's GonNa play, but I mean just fasten your seatbelts. Yeah, I mean there's I've said before social distancing matters everything else. I have no idea. I I have said very little about this other than. It. We have to manage it. That's what we're doing. We're managing. We managed mental health. We manage manage everything I i. don't know anything about this. I do think there's a bunch of Internet experts. I'm not one. To your point, it does bother me that the leading man in America or person in regards to a virus of this nature is now being called quack I. Don't get it. So. That's where we are today. Peter King, NBC, sports I gotTa Run Peterson. One third of the Co. third of the country is calling him a quack, and that's third I think we know what that with that all means, but whatever? We life is today in this country. It is the way it is. Peter King. Thanks Peter Appreciate it. Yeah I mean that the Internet has turned people like You know that don't know anything in two experts and experts in the people that don't know anything it's it is remarkable. If Ouchi Talks I listen in my takeaway. All of us know he's smarter than many smarter than everybody else in the Internet, that's my takeaway on. It doesn't mean he's right on everything, but he's right mostly on everything in terms of science. Coming up next, Joel, Klatt top of the hour. We argue a lot. Joe Class got some very interesting information. College football is going to be different this year. Absolutely perhaps regionalized if we get it in the fall. That's coming up next when you can't explain what somebody does that. Generally me ensures great..

He was at San Diego State. Not Lsu Not Michigan Baseball Don Oregon. State like great programs. Strasbourg was the talk of of College Baseball. And it's like and then you watch him. You're like Oh yeah. Bryce Harper in Highschool Lebron Highschool boy. Does we have so much access to video and information and communication. Now that it's almost impossible for someone to just appear out of nowhere anymore. Late Youtube has really been the GR- Youtube in American idol and Youtube have been the greatest creations for people that don't have lots of capitalization that don't have funding right. They don't come from like they come from small towns and you don't need big funding and you can go on. Youtube and people will by the way. Twitter is free. I mean no. Social media is a key. Look grassroots basketball. How early we know about young basketball players now because of social media otherwise we would. We would never know about these kids and what they're doing they are on. I saw him on a twitter account. Yeah otherwise and then I was like. Oh who's this? Do go on to watch it because it's dumped otherwise you would have only found out about it. Imagine that's I mean a completely different world now so the steelers don't seem too concerned with how Ben Roethlisberger will look when he returns to the field following the elbow surgery their GM. Kevin Colbert says he is confident. That Big Ben is doing everything he can do to get back in shape. I know we're been years where he's been in his career and I never worried about his conditioning when he shows up at a training camp. He's ready to go and he knows how to prepare himself. And I I know that you know he could easily walk away from this game as well. But he's choosing to continue to play it because that's still think he really wants to prove and do more to me. Guys Got Hall of fame credentials as stands today But that's not enough for him and that's to me that's a mark of greatness. Well Kevin Culverts great GM so. I tend to buy into him. But I think Ben's reputation joy is fair right super talented. Hasn't squeeze the most out of his talent. In general I trust the steelers. They're a very well run organization very stable organization. But I think it's also fair to argue over the last few years they have grossly under delivered. Absolutely and it's it's been a disappointment. I mean the fact that they didn't have more success with Ben Rothlisberger Healthy Antonio Brown Levy. Bell is a disappointment. There's that's that's a fair to say so it's not that I think he is being an accurate. It's just like you said Benz. Reputation is what it is for a reason. We didn't just come up with it. You know what he looks like. He doesn't work out or he he he takes a unnecessary hits like we can see what is happening with. Ben Rothlisberger not to mention the fact that he's had open conversations about possibly retiring. I don't love the idea that he could walk away from the game right now that that doesn't make me feel great coming off of an elbow surgery. It's not like Tom Brady. Who's coming off of a kind of disappointing season by Tom Brady Sanders? I'm wondering how much more he hasn't him. He just had elbow surgery and he's coming back so so this is these are all fair questions and again. I wouldn't be so apprehensive about the steelers this year if they had a solid backup quarterback but they seem completely does interested in bringing in a veteran or someone that we did it. Just watch last year completely. Dropped the ball. If they had been anyone of functional last year they probably would have been in the playoffs. Like Mason Rudolph dodges or not where it's at well. He had surgery on September twenty third and he's not at one hundred percent right now but they're saying you're not pushing it because he has more time so we'll see Eli. Manning said that he thinks Daniel Jones will have a better opportunity to step into a leadership role now that he knows he's the guy he law. I also thought that was kind of an awkward dynamic between the two of them last season and Daniel Jones agrees with his former teammate. Looking back you know there. There was definitely You know probably a little bit a little bit awkward at Times Certain Times but You know I think we did A. We did a good job working together. I know I know I enjoyed Working with him and you know certainly learned a ton from from him. The funny thing about it is is Daniel Jones. Just kind of like meaning two point. Oh looks like he's actually Spiderman meanwhile they're pointing at each other so I can't. I can't not do awkward situations. It is not what I do if I'm in an Awkward Situation. I leave if I'm watching something awkward on TV. I will fight fast. I'll go get a drink. I can't remember that show intervention. Yes I couldn't watch it like having family members confront other family members on television. I've told you this before if somebody's on jeopardy and they're getting crushed yeah. I have to turn the channel. I I'm the same way. I cannot tolerate awkward so I can't imagine you live in Indiana Jones who are kind of just naturally awkward guys to begin with being awkward around each other like this dramatic scenario like you last month. No you have the last muffin. I insist you last month. I glad for Daniel Jones that he is now in this role. It must have been difficult for him. I mean it is. It's not just like it's not just quarterback it's manning who's won two super bowls. It's The New York giants manning. Daniel Jones is a strange player. He had three games last year. Joy where I think combined thirteen touchdowns no picks like three. I watched the jets game and I was like. Oh my God jets. Defense was good. He lit it up. Daniels a fascinating kid and the truth is when you're the number six pick you could understand. Eli being like right to Super Bowl No. I don't blame me. I don't blame you. I don't blame again. This is why it's kind of weird when you do something that aggressive take Daniel Jones six overall that you kind of try and squeeze it all in there like you. GotTa say who the guy is especially if the guy is Eli Manning. And he's super bowls matter. How he's playing. It makes it weird finally back. Prescott's contract negotiation is the story that never ends and Steven Jones admitted that it's taking much longer than the cowboys. Hope to get it done. He told The Dallas Morning News. Dak obviously. Is the elephants in the room. Knows it. We've gotta just keep grinding? So they are. They are still. What does that mean? Elephant in the room means means that they know that it's I guess like an elephant in the room is something that like. No one is really talking about. But they know it's still there I mean they franchise tag him so you know it's it's handled as of now but you know it's exclusive Franchise Act for thirty one point four million for twenty twenty the. They apparently offered him thirty five million per year. Which is the average salary of Russell Wilson? But they've yet to agree on the structure of in length and the guarantees on the deal. So they're still going back and forth on all the details of the deal and they have until July fifteenth to get. I don't I don't think an elephant in the room. I think it's the opposite. I think everybody knows everybody's talking about it. They just disagree. I don't think Dax not talking about Steven Jones. Not Talking. That wasn't in the room would be like there that no one wants to acknowledge everybody here is like we're offering you a huge deal and you're turning it down the elephant in the room when they were signing everyone else. Yeah now it's like here's the offer you're crazy not to take it right and that offers -rageous. I'm not taking now. The elephant is hitting you with is trump. Get this done good job with the news. Well that's the news. And thanks for stopping by heard lie football morning in America Peter King. Nbc Sports Dot Com covering the NFL's from the early eighties on his now. Joining US via the Cower Global Satellite Network sponsored by Mercedes Benz the best or nothing by the way I saw pro football focus which I like. It's it's a little wonky and nerdy Peter but I am and so I like pro football. Focus a lot and I saw this morning. They had Russell Wilson As the thirty third best player in the decade under Matt Ryan Gronk Miss Forty Five Games. The Decade Patrick Willis retired six years ago. They were above Russell Wilson. You and I have discussed this. There's even a story two days ago. That Cam Newton maybe going to Seattle at some point if you were Russell Wilson. Wouldn't you say to yourself? Peter Cam Newton. I never get hurt but I. I'm not I think deep down Russell's too classy of a guy to talk about this stuff but I think he's bothered. I think he's bothered by this. Du Well if you were Russell Wilson in you. We played eight years at his level of Football. And think of this. He got drafted in two thousand twelve in the middle of the third round and from that moment he has started every football game. The Seattle seahawks have played regular season playoffs and he's played at an extraordinarily high level. He's the second highest rated quarterback in NFL history and in those eight years playing at that high level. You know winning a super bowl. He's never got one. Mvp vote in those eight years. So if I were Russell Wilson I might go to bed at night occasionally be very happy. Yo seemingly very happily married very well compensated and look up at the ceiling occasionally and say what is wrong with people. Yeah that's that's that's the minimum. I think I would say I. Don't have the composure of Russell Wilson. By the way the Cam Newton Cam Newton thing to me didn't make sense because I do think cam fits in Pittsburgh behind a quarterback that gets hurt. I think cam and Ben have some similarities in style. I don't think cameras. I don't think big bends an off season workout freak. I don't think he even fits in Seattle. I don't think Seattle needs a high profile. Backup are shocked at all that Pittsburgh hasn't made a run at CAM or nobody really has and this is the first discussion of any singular team. Pittsburgh I thought should have hired hired should have signed James Winston. I think he's very very good for that. Particular offense got a great arm these. He's a lot like rothlisburger. And Look Cam Newton depending on you know one of the problems right now. With Judging Cam Newton is. I don't really know who what he is. Who He is so last year in training camp. He told me that you know he was going to be a different kind of quarterback. You know he wasn't going to run around as much changing his style a bit and then he got hurt again. So we don't really know what Cam Newton is and that's not being critical a cam. Newton is just a for the last year and a half. He is either not played or or had a terrible shoulder injury that he gritty and in the gradient gut and Gut Cam played through. But I don't know whether he is a guy who's going to run around very much whether he's going to be almost exclusively pocket kind of like Rothlisberger is so. That's the biggest problem right now. With Cam Newton we kind of do an autopsy word that Kevin wilds on. First thing I use the other morning on the Tom Brady relationship with now is former teammates and coaches. And I'm not really interested in it because they wanNA bunch and I don't really care about how they got along. It didn't affect their winning. But there was a story that came out from Gary Myers Daily News reporter. That one of the reasons Brady left does he. And Josh mcdaniels that relationship deteriorated and my takeaway was didn't hurt winning so you know. I don't care really but do you do. Do you buy the report that that is part of it. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Gary. I really do. I've known him forever. I don't I don't know that Colin I can't say any honestly I just can't say anything about it because when I heard it I said Wow Josh mcdaniels and Tom Brady always seemed joined at the hip to me..

"Russell can win with battle lines. Matt Ryan is overwhelmed with battle lines. And I like Matt Ryan. I consider him a top ten quarterback and I love drew brees. I consider him a first ballot hall of Famer. You gotta be kidding me. You know what it tells me about this pro. Football focus should not be working from home. Pro Football unfocused is what I'm calling it this morning. I will give them next hour a chance to fight for their case. This is absurd. And I've said it before. Russell Wilson is the best football player in the world. Today is not the tallest the best arm I Q leadership playmaking Russell. Wilson literally does things. We can't explain eight years. What isn't even he ever get hit. The Jackson's faster gets hit Carson. Wentz bigger stronger gets hit. Mahomes last year gets hit. Russell Wilson does stuff. Nobody can explain. He never gets hit. He runs backwards here on sideways. He runs forward. He faces the niners twice a year. He faces Aaron Donald twice a year. He never gets hit. You can't even explain stuff. He does Russell. Wilson Thirty Third Fourth Seahawk Best Player of the decade. And You wonder I fight injustice. I am now Batman without the Butler. I am fighting this. 'cause I'm not letting it go. It's ridiculous and he's the only player on this list. I've seen so far. That in the last two days was rumored to be traded two years ago to the Cleveland Browns and his team wants to bring Cam Newton in as a backup. What it's incredible to me do this. All the time is that. If you don't look like everybody else looks like we don't know what to make of you. A kind of weird. Russell's he's not the prototypical this is Lamar Jackson. I'm guilty of it. I'm like he runs more than he passes. But I didn't consider great coach. Great Great Personnel Department. And and the League's changing the running thing works. Now you gotTa Kinda run so a pro football focus. Russell Wilson Gronk Miss Forty five games in the decade hobbled. His last three years is five. Calvin Johnson Evan. Mathis Patrick Willis. These are good players. I'm not I'm not denying it rustles below. All of never forget. Seattle was an I'm from. There was an irrelevant franchise known for cool uniforms. Baas GETTING RUN OVER GREAT FANS P. Carol had a losing record in Seattle if Russell Wilson isn't drafted Pete's not in the NFL not in Seattle. He was getting one more year. They were paying him too much. Pete's career double baggage at USC. Nfl already been fired twice two losing seasons if he didn't draft. Russell Wilson Has Matt Flynn. He has a third losing season. He's done. He's a legend K. That's just that's just where I'm starting today and a good mood. You know what you know. What are they say? Not all heroes where capes were sports shirt button down somewhere about now. Okay so Okay I got I got to topic. I can't I can't get enough of but you know everybody always talked. You ever heard about like a comic's comic. Oh He's a he's an actor's actor he's he's a writer's writer. Don't believe that stuff. If you're great America find you. The Beatles were great. They weren't even from here. We love the Beatles. Anabol- day where you know you don't get this music now if you're good we get when we like you you choose from Dublin. The Beatles from Liverpool huge in America. If you're a great comic Richie Ricky Surveys. You don't even have to be from here. It'd be crossed upon doesn't matter if you're great we find you. We elevate you pay we make you rich Jim Carey. Canada grew up poor. We found him got rich. Mike Myers Got Rick Ben Stiller. It doesn't matter. I think Ben Stiller's from here the point being is it doesn't matter Wayne Gretzky Canada Ricky Gervais over there. We find you. We pay you hit the lottery in America. So I don't WanNa hear about the garage band that I don't get or a comic's comic you know. He's a writer's writer. No no no no no the great writers in this country in this world always make it big in America. I don't buy that and there's a football player. I'm I'm being told. Oh He's something special. "There's a lot of talk about Jarrett Stidham and I've heard a lot of talk about Jarrett Stidham on national radio national sports radio and what I would tell you is that a lot of national sports radio comes out of the northeast and factually as someone who came out of the northeast in my media career before coming south I can assure you one thing is true the northeast does not watch college football does not consume it in the same way as other parts of the country college football far bigger in the Midwest far bigger in the southwest far bigger far far far bigger in the American south then it is in the northeast but major media outlets are located in the northeast so a lot of times what you get is college football coverage on some of the stories or talking about college athletes it's like listening to me talk about the NC double a tournament and that's why I always preface it by saying look if you're looking for great insights on these teams from the pac twelve in the big twelve and everything like that I raise my hand and say I'm not gonna block yeah I didn't watch them that intently I try to coach myself up but I'm just I I don't try to bluff my audience why see that a lot with college football so when Gus Malzahn the head coach of Auburn comes out in a piece on Jarrett Stidham I expect him to defend his player and to talk about what kind of a great young man he is and everything like that by the way everything I've heard about Jarrett Stidham is exactly that I've heard he's a great young man to be around I heard that he's a hard worker and these are things I heard before he got to the NFL hard worker I'm a good guy to have around your program I'm not a diva and so these are all great attributes about Jarrett Stidham but one thing in the piece that I heard and I'm reading was that Gus Malzahn said no moment would be too big for Jarrett Stidham when he's talked about can he replace Tom Brady no moment would be too big for Jarrett Stidham I've heard a lot of national media members just do you know what can't they they they just they just repeat this and say like yeah we'll look at Gus Malzahn's telling you there's no moment it's going to be too big for this guy and that's when I can tell they haven't watched Jared stempler or have been taken ten minutes to do a little bit of research if you're talking about all the positive attributes and I lead with that every single person that I've ever seen that I've ever heard speak of Jarrett Stidham or I'd spoken to about Jarrett Stidham has had something good to say about the young man and that's awesome and when I hear hard worker and I hear a good guy to have around that tells me he's going to be humble he's going to be a he's going to try to be a leader and he's going to do some good things in those kind of things I think would impress any organization but when I hear no moments going to be too big for him tell me if I'm a bit out of line here if you hear coach say no moments going to be too big for a guy wouldn't you tend to believe that means in the biggest games he plays his best exactly that's not unfair for me to say right that's what I would assume it is biggest names you can expect your instead of the plant's best know moments going to be too big for well I'm here to tell you that the facts don't spell any of that out in fact insured students biggest moments is when he came up the smallest when Jarrett Stidham started at Baylor he started in three what would be called big games I'm not talking about plain directional universities and east bumble state the three best teams he faced at Baylor he lost at Oklahoma he lost to TCU he lost at home versus Texas and his team averaged twenty points scored which by the way was far below their average scoring that year so was below what they usually do against other teams look you're playing better competition the numbers appear you can expect the number's gonna be down a bit numbers are down drastically seven Jarrett Stidham went Auburn where the way I look at it as far as big games he went to a nine or three and nine I'll be kind and say he went three and nine his teams went three and nine but here's what you know about their performances offensively in twenty seventeen as a starting quarterback lost to Clemson lost LSU lost versus Georgia for the SEC championship game loss versus the university of central Florida his offense averaged sixteen points a game in those four losses six team points a game almost half of what they averaged in their other games so what I would say is in the biggest moments your offense put up sixteen points those moments were pretty big so the next year he comes back loses versus LSU loses at Mississippi state loses versus Tennessee at home a wretched Tennessee team loses a Georgia loses at Alabama five losses his offense averages seventeen points again again around half of what they averaged in other games Gus Malzahn can tell you all the good things about Jarrett Stidham any should that's is guy and from everything I as I told you everything I've heard that is the kind of young man he is but saying no moment will be too big for him that is completely contrary to the resume that he's put up we'll talk more about it will open up the phone lines at the bottom of the hour for you to be able to get in with us but coming up next Cody Benjamin joins me from CBS sports covering the NFL I have some thoughts on the NFL schedule and I have some thoughts about what people think about the.

The Patriots' Quarterback Question

"Mike how're you holding up Nina? We're doing great. We're healthy. I hope the same for you and all our listeners. Mike Reese covers the New England patriots for ESPN. Well Patriots. Have a lot of questions. So we're GONNA get to that. Actually I think everybody does about the England Patriots. Right now to me. I think they're the most interesting team in the NFL. At the moment I love it and you know a lot of people ask me like how do you feel about covering the Patriots? Now that Tom Brady isn't there and I said well you know that part is not the greatest feeling but when you think about compelling storylines what could be more compelling than what we're going into here which is how are they going to replace arguably the greatest quarterback of all time and that is what we're going to discuss so mike it is early. May and there is still a very long way to go until the regular season begins and obviously there are questions about that. But at this moment the two quarterbacks on the Patriots depth chart our Jarret Stidham the Auburn quarterback who New England drafted in the fourth round in two thousand nineteen and journeyman backup Brian. Hoyer for months. There's been speculation about whether they would draft someone. They did not whether they would sign juice. Winston or Andy Dalton did not so. Let's start here is Jarrett. Stidham the guy at the moment. Well there's no question minute. It's his job to lose. I would say the Patriots aren't GonNa say Jarret Stidham the guy because they don't want to put more pressure on him then is already

"Because I don't want to run out of time I do want to touch on what transpired in patriot world today yes Tom Brady is now Tampa Bay bucs the it is borderline old news now because it's a couple days add the reverberations will go on for a very long period of time there after but the news itself is not breaking today you did have a couple of moves that were breaking news today in New England give me a read on the two sidings the patriots had brain a couple of the guy I talk play for my jets this year not a bad player as a matter of fact and the return of Brian Hoyer to potentially compete for the starting quarterback job there in New England give me your thoughts on both to two months yeah I think they're directional moves I think as soon as you know sort of the cold side Philip rivers you know a lot of people around here we're thinking that you know reunion with lawyer or maybe even Jacoby percent was up author bility I think the horrible exactly he's got he's got great knowledge of this offense he knows that locker room he does the coaching staff so he'll come in and help you know if not compete for the starting job to always be a great sounding boards for Jarrett Stidham you know who's kind of a presumptive you know successor to Brady a fourth round pick out of Auburn last year so a great locker room guy you know like I said very knowledgeable and you know one thing about Brian Williams when the patriots won the Super Bowl against the rams two years ago he was universally wanted by his teammates for his ability to run the scout team and kind of morph into the opposing quarterback down the stretch in the playoffs run so really good guy really good signing I just just make a lot of sense for him to be here you know Brandon Copeland the guy who did the patriots has seen up close for a number of years now where they pay it you know in the at the I got at the Coachella tickets Oct glowingly about the past seems like the patriots have a guy you know good special teams guy and also has that versatility that the patriots love in their life back together can rush the passer he can drop in coverage you can play the run picnic walk a lot of guys in free agency this week Kyle van Noy Jamie Collins in the Robert so really need to restock that line backing core and feel good start getting brand coke on a guy who they had interesting last offseason but weren't able to

Auburn Bouncing Back

"So Auburn bounces back given up for dead. They won a couple of games. Now that gives them a little momentum heading to Georgia Saturday. I didn't see that one coming. You know, they were down ten in that in that ballgame. And I really thought I was going to be over. So it was good to see them find something. It was good to see I think that leadership Jarrett's did him that football team kind of learned something about themselves down in that football game. Now, here's a little say, you can't run the football. So win this football team. Decides to put the ego aside and say, you know, what this is who we are. And until Gus malzahn says you know, what we can't run the football. Let's do what we do best. They're still gonna walk in there to Georgia. And they're going to try to be something. They're not they're gonna try to run the football. When they can't if they do that. They're not gonna come close. If they see you know, what we can do some things wish works. We can do some misdirection the back, but we can steal some is allow Jarrett stidham to throw the football go four and five lied that. That's what gives us the best chance to win. If they do that. They're talented enough on the defensive side that they could keep it close. They can make it a ballgame. But I just don't know if from an ego standpoint that staff can get together and say, okay, we can't run the football. What can we do? I think they're still going to try to beat their head against the wall. Go into Georgia run the football. And again, I just don't think that's going to do it.
