"It just puts defenses in binds. I mean obviously they to take away travis and tyreek as much as possible just because of the consistent success that they've had the last five six twenty years for travis so i mean it's a it's a thing where when you have other guys that can make plays happen it puts them in a kind of predicament that we do. We want to double cover both of them. Leave these guys on islands or do we wanna play our defense and and do what we do so having the ability to get it to everybody and they can break into the for a touchdown every single play is definitely on the offense the flow more smoothly with guys are yeah. I mean i think the best thing about this team has everybody enjoys else success. And if you look at plays like the the pringle touchdown. I mean tyreek spin double cover the whole game had in the mall as much as usual and he's down there making the block to get them into the end zone and just speaks to the top of guys that we have in this locker room. It's not about who gets the statues about trying to find a way to win the football game and we're all gonna play for each other then today. Yeah i mean he's he's obviously a very physical receiver. "So andy reid indicated in his press conference earlier this week that he would basically use he would play this the same way that he normally would. He didn't outright say yeah. They're gonna play the first half so we'll see. I would probably lean towards like iran. I think they're gonna play. Maybe a quarter drives But i am a little bit surprised by that. I thought they would change up the strategy with the three week. Preseason that we're seeing now. I would also say. I don't think it's by accident that the chiefs are one of the teams to go ahead and do this. It's basically like them. Tampa bay in new england. Old school coaches. That have done it in an old school way successful very say. It's no coincidence of these are teams that. Start out the season hot right. i'm great. He's doing it champagnes doing like these these teams that have been successful doing it. You get better at playing football by actually playing football. And i know that's a crazy thing but i get. Why teams aren't doing it right. There's zero risk of guys getting hurt in these nonsensical games. When you don't play get that completely. These games do not count that being said if you're a team like the chiefs we've got a lot of new guys on the offensive line in particular. You need to coalesce for that to work the way that it's supposed to there's timing that needs to get down before you can get into the regular season and be at one hundred percent and with the way the chiefs scheduled lines up with the browns and week one the ravens week to chargers week three. You better be running. You better be ready to go. Otherwise these teams can come get you if your the chiefs. I'm surprised more teams aren't plan there guys because the i mean they've got two weeks in between these aims. This isn't generally where it's a week off. They got two weeks in between these games. I was surprised. I was kinda surprised. That more teams aren't getting these guys some work because now many of them may go a month three weeks to a month without playing in a semi close to a real game scenario. I haven't met an impostor. He's had listen. He's i think he's. He's got a possibility of being a good player. He showed it before he's had ten and a half sacks In this in this league before but that was right now from what we've seen an outlier right it. The the last two years he's had one and a half sacks in the last two years before the ten sec season he had two and six all right like he's getting a little older i. I'm not listen i. He's a good football player. But right now. If i had to put him in a category i would say imposter need to see. I don't know that he's going to be the dominant pass rusher that i think he has before. But right now. I would say jarran reed a guy who's had one big time out liar season as an pasta right now okay. That's what i was curious about. Was what you were judging. This on going just on is e in imposing pass rusher. Maybe he's an imposter in that capacity. Because i don't think he's a guy that's gonna come in and give you eight nine ten sacks. I don't think that's the type of player that he's going to be. I don't think that's the player. They're asking him to be though. I think he can get you three four five six and i think he is going to be a super effective flare from them from the interior and i think because he so so much of a consistent quality interior player. That's going to allow them to keep chris jones on the outside more often than they expected to play. Tur- sean wharton more than they expected to be able to play. Derek nadi more consistently on the interior. Which will help them a lot against the run. I think this team could be a legitimately good run defense this year which. I can't remember the last time that we said that about the kansas city chiefs jaren reads a big reason why because his presence allows them to play their best. Run defense out there So i'm going certified but for different reasons. I don't think he is a a minutes from the interior as a pass rusher. But he's a very good player. That's going to help them..

Don't be good at that. He's not very good at that. He's okay is it approved. But he's not very good at that. I'm sorry i don't buy that. But i will be very much on the record that this is not going to be seamless that this is not going to be an easy transition that you don't snap your fingers just like tom. Let's say running back. Maybe i think one thing. You know darwin's gotta get a little love a little more love. He's the fourth running back right now. I still think he's not someone you want to rely on in coverage. And when you have guys like willa gain nick bolton those guys should be put in those positions a little more than hitchens i would say that. So what do you think about that. Like in the past. Some good stuff Feels good to be back here for training camp. That guys are working hard Obviously we just continue chopping wood. We know what our goals and expectations. But it don't mean nothing if we don't take care of business on the day to day basis so with that said the mole is today out there still well. Obviously you know being a competitor. We all want it to be perfect. But we understand the ebb and flow of quite. Sometimes you have good days. Sometimes the guys on the other side have good days. The only thing that you want to see this guys making sure that they continue to play with the effort that we expect them to play with and then when it's all said and done we'll coach on take just clean it up so today. We didn't have a very good day. But i'll have an opportunity to really evaluate once we're going there and take a look at it on take early moral to face. What have you seen as you know what i'm very excited about. Those young guys coach is a is a helluva coach. He does a great job of communicating. He's done a great job over the years of teaching He has a way with those guys. Those guys are doing a good job. Are they right where we needed to be right now. No but that's what training campus. Four in fact you know as bad as as you hate to see mistakes made almost good because now you can go out there and take a look at it on tape and half those guys learn from their mistakes so right now these guys are doing a heck of a job they learn the strain the finish and when it's all done with coach doing an outstanding job of collectively getting those guys to learn how to play together can't like it forces all of them to be accountable to one another because at that position you have to communicate you have to have awareness in you gotta stay in contact with each other so it forces those guys to talk to one another which is a great thing so all the little phase that they're not doing is going to help them as we continue to build anything he's ready for a bigger role you know what mccall has done a great job of coming back to camp in shape like he always does but you're still seeing that explosive power he's working on his releases and he just fine tuning the little things we're excited about it not only a we excited about him but also to you got mccoll he knows he has prang on his back. Do you rob you know. A number of guys cornell. Calloway and i mean the list continues but mccoll is doing a heck of a job. He's working on and he's working on the details to help them to improve each. And every day sessions with willie guide without on rouser which one. I'm sorry person who put it this way. In my opinion. From what. I remember it would just poorly executed play. We need to execute better. I also wanted to ask you about another new guy jerk again. What sort of different element to bring you know what djuric has has been in this week for a number of years. He brings experience okay. So i think with him being that room he's going to help date and he's going to help cli- he's gonna help. Those guys grow on top of that. He can help in many different ways giving us a nice little change of pace. You know what those guys are working hard every day. They're doing a hell of a job. Are they right where we need to be. Not quite but i will say this every day. I'm seeing them improve upon something now. They make mistakes. Yes mistakes happen. And like i said you wanna encourage them because when they do make a mistake. It's not about that particular play. What are they going to do the next time. They have an opportunity to get out there. So the good thing is that both those guys are working at tails. They've found a way to make plays each and every day and so the thing that we want them to do is just to continue to strive to be at their best listen. I'm not getting into that. He lost a race. You know so. I don't know when that's gonna take place at. It'd probably take place sometime next offseason. But i'll be curious to see hussein. Vote right now. Here's the thing. You still need help right now. A defense event. And i think that's totally fair to say that I think what they're doing is more about the run than a pass. I think the chiefs have noticed that their run defense flat out has stunk for the last like three four five years. Now in if you're going to get better there at the best way to do. That is by moving chris jones to the outside having jarran reed and derek nadi playing in the interior on running downs. Like first and ten second three those sorts of downs. You're gonna see chris jones. that's when he's going to be playing outside. That's also when you're going to be seeing anthony. Hitchens and mick bolton on the field. I think they're just going bigger. They wanna get more bulk out there to be able to prevent teams from running all over them. Which has been a huge huge issue for many years now and i think that's the biggest thing i think on passing downs third and seven Second fifteen those sorts of situations. I think you're gonna see chris. Jones bump back inside because they know that's where he's at his best when it comes to his pass rush presence. I don't expect to see him out there a whole lot on those situations. I think it's going to be very specific in the way that they utilize them. And i think they're gonna utilize them as a weapon similar to what you see them. Offensively utilizing mccoll hardman. Wear a one time. He's going to be in the slot. Maybe he lines up in the backfield and then ends up. Kinda motioning out. Does that that orbit motion like you're going to see him all over the place. I think that's gonna be what they do with chris jones on the defensive line and i think it's perfectly valid to be concerned about. Christians are moving outside. I have questions about whether or not. He is truly athletic. Enough to like ben the edge and go up against some of those best tackles in the nfl. But adding melvin. Ingram doesn't change the situation in any way. You're you're still expecting frank clark to likely be suspended in some way so even if it's for the first four games of the season or whatever you're probably going to see him bounce outside a little bit and i just kind of to see what happens. "I do for a living. This is this is where i you know if it felt good to be you. Think about a dual threat. Back entering the league with jean. I mean you would want as much repetition as you could possibly have. And the fact is physical. Repetition didn't happen for the chiefs in an edwards. Helaire in your one. And like i always go back to those. Let's not forget. He had eleven hundred yards from scrimmage as a as a rookie and i just think the hype was so much from a national standpoint on these shows. And i think there's a fantasy football aspect to it. That felt like a letdown. Because he you know you expected him to produce even more but this has been a point and the really haven't been afraid to lean into it. And i think a big part of it is okay. We were actually able to install some things in the off season for edwards helaire and that even bleeds into the greater point of like this is why the the teams really like having these off seasons in person because you can start to install things ahead of training camp where training camp becomes initially more of a review than having to start fresh and you could hear it in edwards layers voice. You could tell he's determined and he's a lot more comfortable at seems going into this training camp last training camp. We'll have of course he is you know. Because he's he's had more exposure to things. He's at an opportunity to work on it on the field. Would you didn't get to do last year. But i think there you you you touched on this pete and i think that one of the things that as chiefs fans we have to remember Is that our expectations are skewed pretty badly because of kareem hunt you know. No one expected kareem hunt to explode and be such player in his rookie season. And so we've set the bar pretty high for clyde edwards helaire and and i and i agree. That hunt had in his rookie season. And that's a really high bar to meet. And i think that's kind of ruined our expectations on what to expect from a running back. If you really look kareem hunt season last year there was a period of believe it was four or five games where nick chubb was out and kareem hunt who we thought. Was this golden goose. Three or four yards per attempt So i look at it. And i'll go back to andy reid and now looking clyde edwards allaire. And i'm saying maybe this is the year that we see that type of seventeen hundred yards from scrimmage explosion that we saw from hans that rookie season where he was able to win the rushing title. Lewis moving from receivers to running backs coach. Be more intentional than we gave it credit when they announced the staff moves. It starting to really seem like well. Yeah i know that. Oh absolutely the chiefs are hyping and hyping him up enough for where we have to consider trey smith now and they keep talking about and we keep hearing his name. I mean andy heck saying that. He's he basically sounded very confident that he'd be a starter at some point in his career. Just you know he has some stuff to work on but he just flat out said you know he doesn't he doesn't need to say that at this point you know. He doesn't need to hype them up like that publicly so i think it's absolutely a competition. Elliot does have a good chance. So you know it's it's important no system and he's a smart dude. Obviously so that's really going to give them an advantage. In and trae is is rob prospect and it that there were reasons he drops to the sixth round. Not just because of you know the medical. That's the main part of it. Obviously but he's a raw player and you know he wasn't nfl. Ready maybe a write up the gate But we'll see we'll see trying to competition that she's been able to get away with putting guards not experienced guards. you know. maybe you know a more. You don't wanna call. It transmits off the street. But just you anyone in there and being able to make it work so maybe throwing some with raw power in their raw talent could could be worked with you know experienced at the rest of the positions. I think the challenge with trae smith and college at least appear to be consistency. He had the highlight reel plays the high high is a major believe he's a future all pro and then he had some other place where you're wondering what he was doing and or wondering if he knew what he was doing and so they'll be a learning curve for him. L. d. t. I think you know what you have in that player. He's been there long enough in the system. He's had some really good years years getting paid. He's had a couple of years that maybe weren't so impressive. Where were talking about finding a replacement for him. So is it just the two main competition at this point or do we think any of these other guys might factor in awesome bligh. You know Andrew wylie. There's another number of other bodies that could theoretically be thrown at right guard position. Even lucas neang. What do you think is a two main competition or is it. is it a five or six main competition. Yeah allah grady Allegany is another one to consider to You know he did start at left guard all last year. So that's that's something you know. Hey his starting experience even it's not the same position with someone else we have to consider. Lucas neang maybe Getting more guard play if if they do wanna be in one of the situations where they're putting their best five up and they do want to get bigger and they think remers a solid right tackle You know maybe they do say hey we know you're you're the future at right tackle. Let's get you playing now. Let's get your body in there. Let's get you at right guard. So that's another one to consider you know I it is truly open. Competition and brave each did call Neang a guard possibility last offseason right after they drafted him. I know the situation was different last year on the line. Because you know yet eric fisher mitchell schwartz. He wasn't playing tackle for you. But yeah it. It's it's interesting and it will definitely be one of the best competitions at training camp to watch To follow. well let's six names. I honestly think it's a two person competition there and everybody else is going to be scrambling for death spots along the line. I really do think they're going to do everything can to make it a competition between smith and lt. Yeah with l. d. Ldc having the contract know that he has the incentive to make it work there with smith you know an on such a cheap deal having such the upside that he has they might wanna bring him along a little bit more slowly and let long-term answer there. Smith be the long-term answer maybe count alarm doesn't make the roster his you know his health isn't right and they don't see a spot for him so there's a lot of different ways this thing can go whether a competition or wider competition. I it brings us to some other comments. That i saw one was jarran reed commenting about your his role in the defense and how things were going so far. He went out of his way to praise. Maybe we're not talking about enough in that rotation in turk- warden and is that an underrated player is under the radar guide. That you're we're all excited about drawn. Read with chris jones and frank clark all at the same time you know or or drawn read with derek ninety on running downs but warton might be that extra rotational interior pass rusher. That makes us thing really really go. Yeah when you see a guy come out like he did his rookie year. I think everyone he is. He is on everyone's radar. He's not as if you're achieved saying you know if you're watching the chiefs every week you know tershawn wharton is now. And that's pretty impressive for an undrafted free agent rookie from i believe it was missouri. Sat down in raleigh missouri shadow. If anyone's from there. So yeah. I think it is important to understand that he was a really good pass rusher last year. He was one of the best rookie pass shows in the nfl.
