"Hit <Speech_Music_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> ground ball right <Speech_Music_Male> side diving, stop <Speech_Music_Male> by ward the first <Speech_Music_Male> baseman gets up <Speech_Music_Male> fires to the <Speech_Music_Male> pitcher Suarez <Speech_Music_Male> covering first <Speech_Music_Male> on the play to get <Speech_Music_Male> Jesse winker, that's <Speech_Music_Male> going to retire the side <Speech_Music_Male> and outstanding <Speech_Music_Male> play <Speech_Music_Male> by Taylor ward <Speech_Music_Male> at first base <Speech_Music_Male> and that will end the <Speech_Music_Male> inning. No runs. <Speech_Music_Male> <SpeakerChange> No hits, <Speech_Male> no airs. Well, <Speech_Male> actually, Rick there was <Speech_Male> one error. <Speech_Male> Did you catch it? It <Speech_Male> sounded like he said <Speech_Male> Taylor wore just fine. <Speech_Male> What was the problem? <Speech_Male> Oh, well, the problem <Speech_Male> was that that wasn't <Speech_Male> Taylor ward. That <Speech_Male> was Jared Walsh <Speech_Male> playing first base and <Speech_Male> making that nice play, <Speech_Male> so this is more <Speech_Male> a case of mistaken <Speech_Male> identity than <Speech_Male> problems with pronunciation. <Speech_Male> As we have <Speech_Male> observed, Walsh <Speech_Male> and ward, <Speech_Male> that's become the big problem <Speech_Male> in the aftermath <Speech_Male> of Tyler wade's <Speech_Male> departure. So that was <Speech_Male> the top of the first, we <Speech_Male> had Walsh mistaken <Speech_Male> for ward, <Speech_Male> now we change over <Speech_Male> to the Mariners TV <Speech_Male> broadcast, <Speech_Male> we move to the top of the <Speech_Male> 6th, take it <Speech_Male> away, Dave <SpeakerChange> Sims. Julio can run. <Speech_Music_Male> Here's the throw <Speech_Music_Male> by Turner ward <Speech_Music_Male> Julio. He's in <Speech_Music_Male> there, Jesse <Speech_Music_Male> winker. Gives <Speech_Music_Male> the Mariners a <Speech_Music_Male> three two lead with <Speech_Music_Male> the sac <SpeakerChange> fly. <Speech_Male> So here's <Speech_Male> a new entry in <Speech_Male> the genre, Turner <Speech_Male> ward. <Speech_Male> There's no Turner on <Speech_Male> either of these two teams, <Speech_Male> so I don't know <Speech_Male> where the Turner came <Speech_Male> from. This is the <Speech_Male> second time that we've <Speech_Male> documented Dave <Speech_Male> Sims running afoul <Speech_Male> of Taylor <Speech_Male> ward's name. Last <Speech_Male> time it was award <Speech_Male> wade screw up, he probably <Speech_Male> thought it was safe <Speech_Male> to go back in the water <Speech_Male> once weight was <Speech_Male> gone. Nope, not <Speech_Male> yet, but it's good to <Speech_Male> have this bit back. <Speech_Male> But you know what? I'm gonna <Speech_Male> come clean and level with <Speech_Male> you here. When I <Speech_Male> was recording the segment <Speech_Male> the first time, I <Speech_Male> teed up that Rick riz <Speech_Male> clip, where he <Speech_Male> mistakes Jared Walsh <Speech_Male> for Taylor ward, <Speech_Male> and here's what I said <Speech_Male> the first time I recorded <Speech_Male> it, okay? You ready? <Speech_Male> This is still gonna <Speech_Male> sound like just me <Speech_Male> talking, but this <Speech_Male> is gonna be me talking <Speech_Male> a little while ago <Speech_Male> instead of right now. <Speech_Male> That was Brandon <Speech_Male> Walsh playing first base <Speech_Male> and making <SpeakerChange> that nice <Speech_Male> play. See, <Speech_Male> I screwed it up <Speech_Male> too. I made <Speech_Male> the branded marsh Jared <Speech_Male> Walsh mistake, <Speech_Male> even though Brandon <Speech_Male> marsh is no longer <Speech_Male> an angel. And I was <Speech_Male> even thinking to <Speech_Male> myself, as I was <Speech_Male> saying this, now if you're <Speech_Male> going to get all sassy <Speech_Male> and call out Rick <Speech_Male> riz for saying there <Speech_Male> were no errors when he <Speech_Male> made an error, you better not <Speech_Male> make an error yourself, <Speech_Male> and yet I did. <Speech_Male> And I didn't notice <Speech_Male> until producer <Speech_Male> Dylan let me know. <Speech_Male> And Rick riz was <Speech_Male> talking live. So <Speech_Male> he didn't have a producer <Speech_Male> who could tell him, <Speech_Male> hey, you just said <Speech_Male> ward, that was Walsh, <Speech_Male> just trying to be <Speech_Male> accountable here. <Speech_Male> From calling out other <Speech_Male> people's mistakes, <Speech_Male> got to own up to my own. <Speech_Male> Turns out talking <Speech_Male> is hard. My <Speech_Male> daughter's more than ten <Speech_Male> months old. She still <Speech_Male> can't do it. You know, I think <Speech_Male> we need like an <Speech_Male> FCC <Speech_Male> 7 second delay <Speech_Male> situation <Speech_Male> for word and <Speech_Male> weight and Walsh <Speech_Male> and marsh. <Speech_Male> So someone drops <Speech_Male> an inadvertent F bomb, <Speech_Male> you can just <Speech_Male> cut it out. If someone <Speech_Male> makes a word <Speech_Male> weighed Walsh marsh <Speech_Male> mistake, you just have <Speech_Male> someone standing by. <Speech_Male> Maybe we need to <Speech_Male> start imposing fines <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> about <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> that could cost me money. <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> The FCC doesn't regulate <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> podcasts, so I'd probably <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> be okay. I know <Speech_Music_Male> I've screwed up words <Speech_Music_Male> named in the midst of <Speech_Music_Male> this segment <Speech_Music_Male> about screwing up words <Speech_Music_Male> named before though. <Speech_Music_Male> This is not the first time <Speech_Music_Male> for me. These errors <Speech_Music_Male> are very relatable. <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement>

"Ward was called out on strike his last time. He's keep falling behind three and O to Jared Jared Walsh. So now we discover that Jared Walsh can be mistaken for Taylor ward, which happened last week I played a clip for Matt vasgersian who did it. In that case, I think he just forgot who was batting as opposed to screwed up the names, but in this case callus was just kind of stumbling over the names, I think, and so while she was up there and he said word first and then he sort of got himself in his second saying of word and it ended up being worse. War Jared ward, Jared Walsh caught himself just in time there, but not quite. Anyway, so we still have that. We thought it was going to be Martian Walsh, would be the issue. But apparently word and Welsh is perhaps an even more serious issue. So we're not done with this segment. I don't think it's just changed a little bit. I mean, I would pause at the following, which is that there is a half season left to go, why I assume that we will not see every possible iteration of this bit of confusion. I assume we will see them all. Yeah, we have had Walsh and marsh probably. We've had Welsh and ward. I don't know if we've had marsh and ward. Maybe that's not close enough. But that spot is still unchecked on our bingo card, perhaps. So everyone keep your ears out. However, while I am bringing up broadcaster snafus, I come also to praise a broadcaster because we were notified of this clip as well, you're about to hear a snippet of the nationals broadcast from the nationals Mariners game on Wednesday. This is Dan kolko, you'll hear first the play by play guy, and then Kevin franzen, the color man chiming in.

"Velazquez is a guy who does have, you know, good stuff, but he can be erratic and put guys on base and really put himself into some jams against a powerful and patient lineup like the Yankees that is hot right now. I do think that's a bad combination. I like that bet a lot Anita. I'm going to a target another offense that's been very prolific this season. And that's the Los Angeles angels. They're on the road against the Oakland a's and righty starter Dalton Jeffries. I'm going to play the angels first 5 innings over two and a half runs. You can find that on DraftKings at plus one 35. So we need three runs from the angels in the first 5 at bats, and this is an offense that is maybe the best in all of Major League Baseball against right handed pitching. And Dalton Jeffries is a right handed pitcher that isn't overpowering at all. He doesn't miss bats. It's very easy to make contact against Dalton Jeffries and when the angels make contact against right handed hitters are right handed pitchers pardon me, they do damage. Their first and Major League Baseball and Homer's slugging percentage and OPS versus right handed pitchers this season. And Dalton Jeffries, as I said, is our right handed pitcher who doesn't overpower you. He has just a 15% K rate. That is very poor in today's baseball standard. So he doesn't miss bats. He's in bad form, each of his last three starts. He's allowed four or more earned runs. That's 15 earned over his last 14 innings covering his last three starts. And again, the angels mash right handers and they're often travels well. They've been a really good offense at home. They've been a really good consistent offense on the road, no matter what kind of part they play and the angels hit well. They're third in Major League Baseball and road OPS. So I trust Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout, you know, Jared Walsh, Anthony Rendon, heating up a little bit. This is an offense that we had to take notice of because that's been really, really good this season. So at that plus price of one 35 plus one 35, I need three runs from the angels in the first 5 innings on the road tonight against Dalton Jeffries and the Oakland a's..

"And they've got the ny onfield cameramen out. There just had to know over five. Tell you so now. It's just a artifacts somewhere on the city field grass. I guess or in the dirt they go on the road and a and one of the groundskeepers finds the diamond. that'd be horrible. Puts that in his pocket. And then show you. You know you can't do got fired for that. Obviously would know. There's gotta be cameras. I'm sure around there. That's true i'm cheri. Come on you a man of ethics. you can't go out there and just asking the question business ethics. Can you gotta go out there. And there's zooming in on this. I mean this. There's the the grounds crew. It's their job to touch the ground and right but if you find that you put in your pocket and walk away saying i would get caught on camera. I saw pebble protect the players. In case they slide Snowflakes anyway take the nightcap as well three to one behind a michael conforto two run homer in the fourth. Trevor williams gave you a four and a third of shutout ball aaron loop the credited with the win and edwin. D as the save is twenty-seventh so sweet for the mets. Three straight wins back within five and a half of the first place braves who have dropped three out of four. They were beaten by the dodgers last night. Three to here's nimmo. This turned out to be pretty good day with all the negative stuff going on around could definitely rolled over and just everybody pretty much but the calendar we could have rolled over and have here was row haas from after game one. We had a sleepy star. But these guys. Just don't give up an employee really good baseball. Starting of this game and our approach wasn't good And then to see the guys finished that you you see how this group is. Data have resilient is the word he likes. I like real haas. I'm tired of hearing it. i i really am just. It's the same stuff every game. It's the same stuff. I'm tired of it please. And he doubled down on his. I i know about the boone. The fans and all that until it was brought up to me sunday. So i have a kind of funny exchange with a reporter that allow a play for you guys probably next hour all right. Series finale already postponed with the rain coming in today the remnants from hurricane ida another doubleheader with miami on september twenty eight. You've got that to look forward to which is nice out of town meaningful baseball september twenty eighth marlin right. Yuck oh boy out in anaheim. The yankee suffered their first. Four game losing streak. Since late june the pitch cut on missed one and to throw second throw back home and otani is a double steal at work. Perfect john and by the way. The sanchez is kind of caught sleep. And he's looking into the i. I understand but i mean. I don't know what's going on so much. Listen wasn't running. And then he was running. I throw out by three. Yes close played hard road to the right side of the base for goodness egg. And then you're out it's it John felt the yanks should have handled a little differently. First of all. I wouldn't throw in a by through. I would have one of those place where throw to the pitcher. And then he goes and he's a dead duck so are they looking at it right way to do a game. Are they looking at it. They're not small people. Yeah that is the most entertaining radio broadcast by man. I smile anytime. I have a chance to listen to them. I am small. And whole. I mean i know exactly what's going on in the game but i'm smiling the whole way listening to the bowl. They don't either. Yeah that's not. Their fault is ironic that we talked about this all those years playing that clip. We didn't have a monarchy now. That's exactly we monitor monitor. You're right all right. That made it six. Two in the fifth angels would finish off the yanks six to four jamison. Taya was the al pitcher of the month for july ends up pitching to five five six era in august. The last two starts not great served up go ahead. Three run homer to jared walsh and the fourth he was charged with all six runs and the loss story really missed opportunities for the yankee offense one for ten with runners in scoring position and they grounded into five double plays to giancarlo stanton and another for joey. Gallo who now has twenty five percent of his career. Gdp's over the last four days. That was like a big deal when he came here. He's already granted into nine double plays in his career. And i think he's done like i dunno four times since the trade so go figure Anthony rizzo homered in this game. So he didn't even know about all the double play tonight. It's it's it's part of the overall. is especially That's pretty rare. So now they'll try to salvage the finale of this road trip tonight. Normal star time for us here on the east coast. We'll get a game at six twenty five very nice little late afternoon game out there. Anaheim carrot coal. Maybe go with that because you've gotta have the love that he does. He naughty i like what did you call. Oh gee i was going to giancarl but just jeez so yeah. Big big all right. good times. The red sox lost again to the race. No more fun zander. Bogart's and the positive tests came back sitting yank him off or was it. I thought it was the second before. I believe he had. He had the hit in the i. I don't think he came out for the second. Because i'm afraid of chris sale the red sox and wildcard game. As if that's gonna hold up. I mean please. The i said it before. The red sox are more likely to miss the playoffs and they beat the yankees and a wildcard john over there nervous about the they're fine. They'll nervous about the yanks. It's just anything can happen in that one game in sales. Maybe you're right but let's see what sale does to the race today on the yankees winning four game losing streak garrett cole minus two fifty. That's probably going to be a bad one. I'll guess minus thirty five human. He may even be a minus. Three hundred game. Might be one of those games. I'm going to bet and gm right. I'm saying while you look it up. Raised it win that game. Eight to five. It is nine in a row for them and they are now eight games clear of the town. I'm sure it's similar to what it was the night before breaking. Raise man. how annoying. They just don't understand. Would you know there was a point in my life. I remember the old fan newsroom. In a story i was talking to one of our former bosses. Eric spitz and i was just like the devil. Rays they're always going to be lousy and then boom the next year they probably wouldn't ninety games every year since sixty eight sixty eight attendance jerry and tells me minus two seventy on minus two seventy five hundred. I'm jay z. That is not much there for the mine is one and a half now. They've minus two and a half plus one hundred minus one and a half is minus one fifty two. That's what i have.

"They are four and six out of their last ten but the did win their most recent against toronto which is very good for dan. Kansas city fifty. Eight and seventy sixteen out of i fifteen out of the wild card. But they are seven three out of their last ten and they've won two in a row minnesota on the other hand they are fifty six and seventy two. And i'm gonna say this. Every time i talk about minnesota and you're always and i know you as a listener very upset with me that i'm gonna say it again. You already know what. I'm going to say i pick them to win the division. They've been the disappointment of everybody this year. They've been the biggest surprise even more so than the giants. Be just absolutely being amazing. This year but minnesota. I predicted them to win the central. I really did. And i predicted cleveland to compete a little bit more in the central i thought is division was going to be a little bit closer but a doesn't end up looking. It doesn't look like it ended up that way. And now we have the west visions so it will start out in the al west since we started out in the nfl the last two times. You have the rangers who are in last place right now. They're forty four. Eighty four thirty two out of i in twenty nine out of the wildcard. They've lost three row there in a series against houston and are two eight out of their last ten. Yeah that's that's about it. That's about it if you're rangers fan. I'm sorry the angels. Oh they are sixty three and sixty seven. They are fourteen atta i. And eleven abba wildcard or at six out of their last hand and they've lost three two row. If the angels can get a pitching staff or somewhat of a average pitching staff this angels team can legitimately compete for like a world series like they legitimately compete for a world series. I'm not even joking. They have that kind of talent in guys like shohei and might trout. And jared walsh and anthony run domain in. The list actually goes on from there but the only problem is is that their best bitter is right. Now they're also their best hitter. Ed they can't really have that when he is. He gets hurt too much with his hands. E can't throw as much as most starters do when they are only starters because he has to take those cuts in. He is using his the same hand because shohei otani is a right handed thrower but a left handed hitter. He's using the same right hand so much that he's going to get those blisters and things like that because of a mostly because of the way throws and because of how hard he hits the baseball a you don't hit them baseball if you're not pulling your rig if you're not pulling your hand through the zone heart and that is something that shohei ohtani does incredibly well. Seattle is in third place right now. They're sixty nine and sixty seven and a half out of i but only four and a half out of that. Last wildcard spot. They're six and four out of their last ten. But they have lost to enroll which is not not good now. Oakland right now see they are they. They're seventy in fifty nine right now. Six and a half out of i in three and a half out of the wild card now the thing about them only three and a half out of the wild card is that they've lost six games in a row and they're to and out of their last ten and they're playing the red hot yankees but after that. I like oakland. Chances of making a comeback in making a run re are'making making a run. I should say at that. Final wildcard spot. Because i'm not gonna lie. I i would prefer my team at this point to be hitting a slump. Because i know they're going to bounce back now i do. I want that to fall below To fall below four games back no not at all because that is a lot to make up but right now. This is the time if you are going to skate. This is the time to do it. And i think oakland is still in a very very good position. Even though they're two and eight of their last hand in lost six zero houston on the other hand. They're the most consistent team in baseball. They have. I mean like really over the course of this year. They're seventy six and fifty two. They're six and four out of their last ten and winners of three row. I mean they're one of the best teams in baseball. It just like they had in the entire year. It's as simple as that. I mean aside from They kinda got out to a slow start but aside from that real slow start they really been a consistent team and like i feel like every time i look at this houston astros team in the standings. They're always six and four. The it feels like they are always six four and and they're winning percentage shows that because they have a five ninety four. Winning percentage on the year. That's basically a sixty percent. Winning percentage and out of their last ten. They've won sixty percent of their games. Like it's it's really as simple as it not really simple as that but it it does feel like this team has been the most consistent out of every team this year which is something that i absolutely love now. Now we're gonna go out and we're gonna finish up in the nfl west with arizona in fifth place in the bottom of the seller. Their forty four in eighty six forty games out of place which is by far the most. Actually it's not the most but it is the most in the nfl. And it's not. I mean by it is the most but it is not by far. Most baltimore is thirty nine and a half games back with a very very similar record. They are five and five out of their last stand but they did lose their most recent eighteen extras to philly this past friday colorado they are fifty nine and sixty nine twelve or twenty four games back out. I eleven and a half out of that wildcard spot which is actually really really good news if you're a colorado fan because this team is legitimately good home but the problem is is that we've we've talked about it..

minnesota angels al west shohei jared walsh anthony run shohei otani baseball shohei ohtani red hot yankees Kansas city houston nfl giants toronto dan rangers cleveland oakland Ed

"The justices upheld baseball's reserve clause against antitrust challenge and at the end of the day justice blackmun following various precedence ruled on behalf of the court that congress had exempted baseball from the scope of the federal antitrust laws but the opinions famous not for its holding but for its introductory section justice. Blackman's encomium to the national pastime. When the opinion was published one of justice blackman's friends called to ask why mela the new york giants celebrated rightfielder. Who had five hundred eleven. Home runs did not make the list of favorites. Of course he did the justice replied but when he checked out was nowhere to be found in justice blackman's personal copy of volume four zero seven of us reports. The justice in the spidery crystal clear script that was his trademark penciled in ops name next to the flood list. I shall never forgive myself. He is reputed to have said in. The mel at-bat but hung on his wall had that self-chastisement inscribed on a plaque below. This haunted him for the rest of his life. He had unintentionally left out quite a snub. Do you think that he called it. Airs a terata. Good one wasn't. But i did anyway and the less little follow up from episode seventeen twenty nine. I also answered question that episode about which is worse or or which performs worse position player pitchers or pitcher hitters and came to the conclusion which matched your intuition that pitcher hitters are worse and i did a deep dive on this at the ringer in written form and we got to emails from listeners. Who made the same point in response to this discussion. And i think it was an interesting point. And i'll read one of them from listener matt. Who says in recent podcast. You ran a lot of numbers to demonstrate that pitcher hitters had performed worse than position player pitchers. But it struck me that you're empirical analysis or at least. Your interpretation of the numbers was flawed in that you didn't seem to account for a particular selection bias in the major leagues in practice. Starting pitchers who are really terrible at hitting are frequently required to hit. While only the most competent position players tend to be asked to tow the rubber. It would not be stretch to assert that if baseball required position players to take the hill occasionally in order to stay in the hitting lineup. The results of those instances might be a lot uglier than the position. Player pitching outcomes. We become accustomed to seeing managers aren't plucking just anyone off their benches to pitch an inning. Conversely if manager could always sent his best hitting pitcher to the plate in a pinch pitcher hitters would perform a lot better than they do. So that's an interesting point. That's something that i hadn't really considered. But pitchers have to hit even if they are completely terrible at it as long as their national league. Starters as long as they're in the batting lineup they have to hit whereas position player pitchers that's voluntary managers. Decide which ones to send in. However i take slight issue with matt taking issue with me here. And i have two responses which i even if the selection bias did exist. I am not sure it would change my conclusion. It might change as he said my interpretation of the results and the difficulty of doing these things but mostly i was just interested in which have been worse which are worse relative to average and even if there were some selection bias that produce those results. It wouldn't actually change with the results. Were so great. What i found about which has actually performed. Better or worse that stands. I think but it's still an interesting point. But i do kinda quibble with the idea that the selection bias does existed. It's plausible but i think there might even be a bias that operates in the opposite direction. Because what matt was saying. Is that only the most competent position players are asked to pitch. But i think that's not actually true he wrote the managers aren't plucking just anyone off their benches to pitch an inning but they are almost always plucking someone off their benches off their benches being the operative phrase there they don't take starting players generally and make them pitch so the best position players many of whom would probably also be the best pitchers just because they're stronger harder throwing or or athletic or maybe more likely to have been good enough to have played two ways in the more recent past are essentially off limits because you don't want to risk hurting them or tiring them mer embarrassing them or anything so when the twins wanna a position player pitcher they signal for winds. Oh not interested in simmons. Who was a wichita mid pitching prospect in two way player before he was drafted or when the angels wanted one this april or last august. You know they have. Jared walsh other the roster who was actually a professional pitcher but they choose backup catcher. Anthony ben boom or at least they have a couple times. And that's not always the case like j cronin worth who was a a two way player. Did get a couple of outs for the padres this year. But that's more the exception than the rule like riley managers are limiting themselves to a a small group of replacement level position players basically and ruling out the players with the best arms and in recent seasons which is what i was focusing on in that article that episode. They haven't even really been all that selective with the scrubs that they put in to pitch there been so many position player pitchers lately that now. You don't even have to throw hard for a position player to get in there. Like the average velocity of position. Player pitchers has sunk pretty precipitously so if pitcher hitting work the same way that position pitching did i think some of the good pitcher hitters quote unquote like bumgarner and cranky and will listen. They might have been deemed too valuable to let hit and so you just have all the at bats. Going to like replaceable relievers. I think that might be actually a closer analog to this situation so i'm not sure that actually exists or that if it does exist it's not balanced out by this equal and opposite bias toward not letting your best position players take the mound. It's amazing how rapidly the sort of barometer for success in moments like that shift from what we commonly understand in baseball to something. That isn't really about the results on the field. At all right and you can see it in the selection of trends that you're noting here right. You're you're trying to get out of it but like you don't care by how much because you've already blown the thing and you really don't want anyone valuable to get hurt. And so the the sort of gauged by what you're saying is so different than what we expect you know. It's kinda like when when actual pitchers pitch in blowouts their barometers different to right. You're not worried about me. You're still wanting to get guys out but you're wanting to get them out in service of like not having to get someone also warm because it's huge. There's already this huge differential so the goal shifts ever so slightly in. I don't know. I always find those women's interesting because they do think it tells us something about how we understand. Stakes end end sort of accomplishment. In any given moment but yeah. They're you know the fact that we saw. Rizzo hitch to freddy. Freeman is leah. Hina wild when you about like what. What were they doing right. That's they probably should not have done that. I'm glad they did and clearly. It worked out fine and did not result in in any sort of injury or anything like that. But it's really very surprising that we saw that in twenty twenty one. You don't see that often. Has that was a fun moment. So i'm glad it happened but it was definitely an outlier and like even going back to win jose canseco pitched and through his knuckle for the ninety three rangers and he heard himself which was like the worst nightmare. And i've read about that unlike. Kevin kennedy was reluctant to use him just because he might get injured. And that's not something you ever wanna risk A really good player on and even if like a rizzo pitches or someone like that pitches. I think they're not throwing all out like they're they're just kind of lobbying it up there. They're playing catch released. So even saw that this weekend where you had brock holt who in addition to throwing some harder pitches not hard but harder. He was throwing like thirty one mile per f-a-s-t pitches. And no that's like almost as slow as you can possibly throw like according to physics like ray and still get the ball. Might fast did an article on that for the hardball times like ten years ago and he concluded that it's about like twenty seven miles per hour. Roughly like with the right amount of backspin with the launch angle. And everything like you can throw a pitch that crosses the plates of thirty one like that's cutting it close of like not even getting there and that is a true defense. I mean people sometimes call. Things uses that i would not actually call..

"Here's a three Oh, swinging the ball line left field walls coming on sliding, and he makes the catch. Oh boy, that one saved at least a couple of runs. Jared Walsh out in left field, steals a hit from Kris Bryant and a huge place. And the National League leaves them loaded. Thought it was funny once again Angels player making that play probably the biggest catch of the game. Like I said, one of bigger moments of the All Star Game on Tuesday night, and the Angels just have all these great stories. Mike Trout, the best player in baseball, even though he's hurt Shohei Otani, the biggest superstar right now. Maybe the most talented player like I said. That we've seen in this sport with the ability to hit a 500 ft home run in Monday's home run Derby and then throw 100 mile per hour fastball starting in the All Star Game on Tuesday. Look, I was nervous that he was going to be down to 90 91 92. When I saw how gassed he looked after that home run Derby, But give the guy credit. Came out and prove that he's for real. And Jared Walsh 39th round draft pick being an All Star first baseman going out and playing left field because that's where the American League team needed him. And yet the Angels are not going anywhere. Baseball is a team sport. The Giants have won as a team this season didn't have any starters on Buster Posey. That the injured list in this all Star game Kevin Dawson would have been a candidate, but he pitched on Sunday. And so what did that mean? You saw to Pittsburgh pirates to Cincinnati Reds in the National League starting lineup. And two members. Nationally, West teams most loaded division in baseball. I thought that was interesting. Brandon Crawford made a quick cameo popped out against a starter Chris Bassett. So not really a memorable performance for Giants players. And quite frankly, Giants players. Specifically, pitchers never have memorable moments unless you're talking about their meltdowns in the All Star game, so Giants probably just happy to get through with Crawford being healthy gospel, not throwing a pitch and Posey able to rest up. Like I said that 468 ft home run from Vladimir Guerrero. I just wish we could have seen him in the home run Derby, which by the way, Shohei Otani said he'd love to participate in another one. I'm all for it. Let's see him do this again. Let's see him. Keep doing this. On the other side. We're talking about the Giants, who need to step up in the second half. This Giants team has had a long list of contributors made this 57 32 record possible the first half before the All Star break. An even bigger group of players can make this postseason push. Reality and help the Giants lock up a playoff berth. Crowley in for Copes, You're listening. It can be our 1456, a TV sports leader. We've swapped one seam head for another. "That's that'd be wild. Imagine adding those guys like trade that you can make right exactly not having to give up any assets either. They're getting the talent fusion back. Just just bring back to superstar potential players. Oh that's pretty cool. Yeah so you know again. I don't think he's changing the landscape of my team. But i think he's a solid contributor right now and even if it does start to fade the playing time a little bit down the road. I've gotten some health back or or found some other guys. But i think at least in the short term i. I really like him. But i did get him at somebody. I think can be there for the rest of the year just because the plate skills. I'm hoping he can. He can perform his way into more of that. Share that you're talking about. I think gavin sheets has better skills than all the guys. You name there with goodwin angle larry garcia billy hamilton. So hopefully that shines for him and he's able to keep that plane time going. Mike is mike fulton and people remember he is at one. Point was a really interesting to pitcher He's got four pitches now. In each recently changed the grip. On his slider and curveball. In it's been helping quite a bit over the last three starts. He's got three sixty. Ira the walks are down only to walks in twenty innings. That's huge for lengthy for him. It is huge. I mean he's getting to pitch in. Texas is once he stay in texas in. You know in that amazing place to pitch. That's ugly on the outside but beautiful on the inside. I really like him. And i streamed him last week of for the oakland and in seattle starts. I'm happy with what i got from him. I don't know if i in some of my weekly leagues. i them out this week in some. I didn't just because he got. He's got oakland again for the third time that's right right. Yeah and then just that scares out of me understandably in some ways. I didn't have a choice. So you know in my mid event. Like i said i didn't have. I didn't have many options to your way for the schedule. The break did nuts. So i'm open. He doesn't like get crushed. Being seen the third time in you know two weeks but i really like what fulton average is doing and i think he is especially your deeper leagues is someone people should take a look at As a kind of a team stream room for it. Yeah i think so too on faulty and Just throw an ad on guy who was picked up a lot this week off. Their team is colby. Allard was pitching well and he was fine against the tigers for his first start. He's also been pitching while. I think both of them could be around and i don't know that either them is necessarily going to be. I mean our twenty. Three's not getting traded but even faulty at twenty nine. We'll see maybe if he runs this this week and then out of the break pitching well and generate some. But i don't know that it would be enough for them to want to trade him. So i think he'll stick around in texas and just keep starting every fifth day as well there so the they got a few guys in addition to all star kyle gibson. Boom a well done man. He's awesome. he's awesome one. Nine eighty are a one four whip. He's been incredible. There are no two ways around it. You would think the combination of cedric moans. And kyle gibson have me in first place in every one of my leads legs right now. Maybe a few and listen far far. Be it for me to just go around and back patting us to aggressively. But i will say there were two guys that you know if you listen to the show in the off season probably likely to have these guys on more teams than not based off our promotion of them if you if you liked what we were saying. And that's cedric moans. Jared walsh and they're both all stars. So i felt pretty good about that. You know we don't get anything right. I know that for sure. But you know when you put when you plant your flag and it's on a couple of guys that are mid late round guys. I mean mullins was dirt cheap. Walsh had some juice but he was still very affordable as well and they both make the all star team. I felt pretty good about that. So a little kudos to us on the all star break there if i can be so bold as to As to brag a little bit and then throw in your kyle gibson love as well and you know we got. We got small stars out there. So yeah. I mean a little bit right just a little a little bit of bragging again. We got plenty. We got plenty of stuff wrong that we can get hammered on so we'll take a little a little love here and there but yeah mullins is fourth in the outfield are you. Are you kidding. "Yeah i guess this is always the risk that you take right that things you go. We want to mark special occasions in place that feels special to us and we wanna do it with our nearest and dearest and also with the players that we enjoy most sometimes things go wildly outta whack. And i think that the the sort of part of the deal right. The the risk is that otani only goes in inning and their two rain delays and the game goes into one in the morning and ends in a bizarre way and everything. Is you know cats and dogs living together but the reward that you get is that you're maybe going to see a thing you've never seen before and maybe the no one's ever seen before i did see something that hadn't happened before but you know in any individual game that can feel like a lousy bargain. But i think in the you know the course of one's life over the you know when you complete your register it probably balances out in a way that is to the to the baseball fans favor. But that doesn't make bad bad show appearances. And i mostly i in addition to not getting to see him pitch to his full potential. And what we've seen from him so far this year. Almost how that you saw you just got to see. So little of him at all right knows after that first inning. He was just. He was out in in both ways. Radius is the. This is dangerous. So i was like. Oh not only does does not get to see that. You know fabulous splitter work the way that it's supposed to you but you're not gonna get to see him heading so yeah and you're right. There was a point in my life. Where i really prided myself on. Never leaving a baseball game before it was over. I mean it could have gone. Eighteen innings could have been three rain delays. I would just not leave. It was a point of pride that was how a marked myself as a hardcore fan in my mind was i was not gonna go until it was all over but that was not the case on wednesday. We left during the first rain. Delay otani was out and we did a little walk ashamed to the subway with our otani gear on and some drunk yankees fence along. The way made some remarks of their our choice of apparel. Not in a mean way. Billy from what i can tell most of the yankees fans had a real respect for otani especially after he hit three homers in the i do games and even though i think. They think that he spurned the team. Possibly in two thousand seventeen and although obviously they wanted to knock him out of the game they probably wouldn't have wanted it to happen quite that way or quite that quickly. So yes i i guess. They got their comeuppance later. But i pity a yankees fan. Su's sacramento see the end of that one. Cas the angels had their own seven running in the ninth and yet jared walsh hit his second home of the game in that case a grand slam the first grand slam ever off of aroldis chapman and yeah that was that the essential sexually won that game so the game on thursday was then rained out or postponed. And so now. If they're gonna make that up in august on what would have been an off day for the angel so now they have to come back to new york in between a series at home in this series in detroit. Just the play. That one game. So i don't know maybe things will up so that otani will make that start to fill kitchens at redemption. Maybe i'll go back and see him again it. It can't be worse than than that. I suppose perhaps you will get another shot and maybe this time you'll learn that part of your otani related modrow means that you have to sit like you know in the upper deck and then he'll throw a perfect game or something like maybe you know it. It's not your fault. bend like he you like. You said you haven't been to a game in a long time and this is the first time you would have gotten to see him. You don't know what your your mojo is like here. We've we've talked about this at various points before we are sometimes unaware of the extent and and boundaries of our own power in these moments and it could be that in the course of understandably wanting to have a nice anniversary celebration that it got a little out of whack but then you know there were two rain delays and they washed away and presumably Made you now just drenched in rain instead of sticky so we yes emerged. Different at the end unwisely. We didn't really wear rain gear and so when we emerged from the subway of his absolutely pouring and we just started. Charlie brown walked back to our apartment. Totally drenched and our otani gear was sopping which seemed like a metaphor for the performance. So it ended in an appropriate way but but it wasn't a total us. We also had some some nice time. Unique other company so You know it's a bit of a bummer. Because if he had hit indoor pitched well it could have capped off one of the most amazing months in baseball history really and and it still is sort of but ended on a down note. Obviously so that's that. But i guess if you care about someone the way that we care about shohei ohtani then you have to stick with them in the worst times to and you see them at their worst and you still appreciate what they can do at their best so We have seen him at his worst as a pitcher. Let's hope well and his j jaffe noted when he wrote about this for us because he trekked up to the bronx from brooklyn hoping to see great otani times and being similarly disappointed. You know like Otani is practice team up plenty of times over the course of the season and so at least they picked him up this time. It's kind of nice isn't isn't that what a good relationships all about. Ben can each other up. one one. One party falters really. They were celebrating your anniversary. They were they were. That medicine isn't is better and hasn't done this before. Jar walls is gonna hit to sixty with thirty home runs this year. I to sixteen thirty. I don't have a problem with marketing. It down june seventeenth. That's going to be our jared walsh. I matt allston update podcast. All right so there it interesting. Jared walsh. I was on board two months ago. He's not not olsen buddy the top hundred fantasy option for sure. Jared walls is a power guy. now he can't hit lefties and they moved down in line up there but and he's not gonna three hundred dollars season but a two seventy five batting average with thirty plus home runs makes them a top thought hundred guy and i mean i was just using the matt olsen cop because west coast lefthanded batter and you know matt olsen isn't exactly killing lefties himself but Joe walsh is legit. It's a shame that the angels don't have my drought because that's a team. That has a good offense a base in windows hitting either like men that could be a top offense there. Yeah actually one of the things that bugs me about the angels lineup composition. Right now is just that. I actually think one of the big differences between these two players to date as of today is run scored. It's the depth of the line of turning it over and scoring runs and padding walsh's if he had gotten more of those they're actually pretty close in the player then It's you know we we talked the time and you heard my projection there. He's done better than that. I probably would still project what i had said in that. But that's still an excellent player as you said a top hundred guy. Ulsan spend awesome. What's really weird about this. Is i kind of wish. In retrospect we had talked about vladimir guerrero at the time since their one two three for a first based on the player. But we're going to see how the rest of this year place kind of what. I was unsure of it at the time we discussed. This is how you tab june seventeen. It's like you've thought this was a sixty game season. We'll are eric in two months. And it was on the fifteenth of april and. I'm like a podcast. In two months months in two days. It's june seventeenth. We've got to pay it off. I know eric doesn't like victory laps. But but but do we victory lap if it stays this way at the end of the year victory lap. at all it's still on september seventeenth. Who knows who knows where we are said. In two months we could have this discussion again. We're having this discussion again. If you wanna make new claim we can do that again today. You want us. I'm curious to players go. I'm curious to see how you knew to remember that we talked about this two months ago. What the heck never forgets. He's good. He's the best he's the best. So who's the next jared walston. Who's the next. Jared walsh bobby bradley. I mean i'm. I'm trying to think of lefty hitting first baseman. I think bradley is not that. But i don't either but i but i that's a curious off that's interesting interesting. I mean it could be bradley. I think he's got some pop and they have to stay with him and he's off to a good start. I mean it's only a couple of weeks. He's been well over three hundred. But i'm trying to think of a left handed hitting first baseman. Who could be and he's not going to be vogel. Bach mean kissinger hundred. This incredible. what's happened to him. This season never going to be brand bell as possible. There is nobody else like this but a either on right. And that's what i'm trying to i. I you know that. I walk on multiple teams. I had them in labor. I haven't been are sim league. I enjoyed that breakout. Season is basically. Because i studied is aaa numbers and i was like. He's got power. Jared wells have always had power whether he can keep the batting average or something is a different story altogether. Okay another. it's it's the contact. It's really contact with him and the one thing. I want to see corrected. a bit. Going forward is bring back the contact rate of last year. That's all time for combo meals things today. Many small business owners are busier than ever because they're focused on managing and growing their business. They can't always spend the time. They wish they could recruiting. And that's why linked in jobs has made it easier to find and hire the best candidates for free. Look i sure. Wish i had lincoln jobs as an option when i was assembling my staff at. Espn many years ago. What it made the process easier more efficient. Nobody wants to waste time and with lincoln jobs..

vladimir guerrero matt olsen jared walston Jared walls jared walsh Jared walsh Joe walsh Jar walls last year sixty september seventeenth bradley walsh Jared walsh bobby bradley Kyle two days thirty plus home runs today two months ago eleven hundred s

"It's going to be good series getting shohei in the series or no the bus again not getting shohei There's a solid champions that missing the bus anyway But we're not getting to see him on the mound. That's okay. I believe we've got Dylan bundy andrew. Heaney and the canning is who the as will be seen Look mass asi big part of why the angels are hot right now. He's swinging about very well during this stretch. we're gonna get. I had a little exchange back and forth with mark. Group is up who is the color analyst phenomenal color analyst For the angels. And he talked about. Jared walsh coming into town. Squaring off against matt olsen two guys who play a very important defensive position in this day and age and have produced at a wonderful clip. Jared walsh just a tick really behind mendelssohn across the board in production slight advantage in batting average i think while she's in to ninety one but After that he you know just behind only in a lot of the other offensive categories and being able to watch him along with Along with the rest of this halo squad is going to be exciting just to see kind of why they're playing or why they're winning the games that they're winning and like i told you i think a lot of it has to do with the way. Justin upton has been hitting the ball to the last two weeks. Justin upton is hitting three sixty one with a thirteen thirty six opie that is the fifth highest. Opiates and major league baseball over that span just in the month of june just in the month of june. It's pretty good. I mean fuck and you just look up and down here. And it's like staticy thirteen eighty one. He's fourth The majors in this month upton in his fifth and then you go down to tenth shohei ohtani eleven seventy eight. The angels have been hitting the ball. It's a matter of whether or not they're going to be able to pitch at the same time corrobos. Yeah they don't. They haven't figured that out yet they will. Eventually i feel like we will get to a point where the angels realize. You do need pitching in order to succeed at the major league level and when they get their look the fuck out i just wish i really do for angels fans. I wish that. Like and. I'm sorry if i if i say this in this offense you and it hurts our feelings but you didn't need anthony window. No you didn't know you didn't. I think that was panicked. Pivot after losing out on garrett cole and we talk about micky calloway's presence being a potential deterrent for the angels and a trevor bauer union. That really sucks to considering how that played out and it just like fuck man. It feels like the angels fucked that up. I'm sorry like it. We can continue to talk about how they haven't had the success in the pitching front but it kind of feels like you haven't had success in landing pitching on the pitching front to help the pitching front which is a little strange like it shouldn't be that hard to lur a pitcher to california and really and like how. Come on especially with what you've got now. As far as the supporting offense of cast look like. Hey we have mike trout shohei otani and california weather sound good. Oh and all the money that you were asking for. Even though they didn't have all the money that garrett cole is asking for what was their excuse for that. I mean if that's the guy that kind of puts you over the top. And i could understand like i said before about the toronto blue jays. I one of the toronto blue jays to be on on garrett cole and it's like well at that point we don't exactly know what we have now. We do like the blue jays have one of the best if not the best offenses in baseball. So it's like you know if garrett kohl's free agency came around now instead of back then. I feel like they should have been way more aggressive but with the angels. They're kind of in. That position was like yeah. We definitely know what we have offensively like. We're not waiting for anyone to see if they can bloom into a superstar player that we know what we got. So that supplement that bullet let let me. Let me stop you there. Because a guy. Like jared walsh coming on to the scene in in the way he has this year. I don't know if that's something that they fully accounted for. Because walsh is a luxury what's that he was he's a he's a luxury he's like. Hey look we found talking about talk. Shohei otani and mike. Trout are responsible for over fucking eighty five percent of their offensive production until upton started swinging. Well and isn't it crazy that we talk about the angels offense and we don't even really mention rundown people just forget he's on the team ugali. What three hundred million dollars right. What did he get like to eighty something. No to forty five to forty. That's fucking crazy like when we talked about the angels. Hey come on out to see the angels. They've got x. they've got y they've got z. No one anthony run down crazy for threes and forty five million dollars. Let's just say like all right. Let me ask you. We'll do this exercise. And i know you didn't have time to prepare for this. But two hundred forty five million dollars goes to anthony rundown on a seven year deal in the season going into the two thousand twenty season..

matt olsen Jared walsh fifth Justin upton jared walsh micky calloway fourth california two guys garrett cole ninety one toronto blue jays mendelssohn garrett kohl Heaney three hundred million dollars forty mike seven year tenth

"I don't i don't know like you know there's there's some situations that i think that like there should be an understanding that it's just like maybe not the right thing to do You know we're talking about last night like in. It's an eight to one game in the eighth inning and our game You guide Not just jared walsh. Jared walsh's hitting big big left handed hitter. Everybody shifted over. You know and let's just say for sake of the argument. Jared walsh is hitting you know to ten like he's not he's raking like whatever let's just say sitting and the guy wants to get a base hit of eight to one in a like who's to say that like he can't like dragged on and try and get on you know like we're all everybody's playing for money your contract you know like whatever to stay in the big leagues like at you know. Give any example. You want in rural. Say that that's you know you shouldn't do that right. Like that's just not something you do now. I probably agree and that situation. But like on the flip side of it is i if we don't want to give him a basic then. Why should we be allowed to ship right. Like you're you're giving up half of the field and maybe that's the easiest way for him to get on. You know raises average. Whatever so. i think that there's certain situations like i kinda.
