"Ecosystem and receive a massive amount of attention. And we just wanted on this show. To give all of those who gave Their lives for our country, the attention and the respect and the commendation that they deserve. And also Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz 20 of ST Charles, Missouri, all 13. Of those individuals. Deserve our utmost respect. Commendation not just for themselves, but for their families and buck what stands out to me as we ran through all of those names. Just how young all of these guys and girls these are. These are the best of us these individuals And they stood at the fence line. They stood outside the wire and they were protecting our people, and they were protecting those the United States had entrusted with their security and those to whom we had a sacred obligation. And they paid the ultimate price. And it's just a reminder for all of us. I think, clay as we sit here, we talk about the politics. We talk about the administration and, um we criticize them, but we don't just do show. Because we're trying to score points or because this is, you know, Democrat Team, a Republican team. The decisions that are made by the commander in chief really matter the lack of planning here. And the disaster of the Kabul pullout has mattered. The entirety of the Afghan war and the inability of people that senior command level from the military all the way up to the White House. Has cost lives lives of heroes like the ones that we just read off on this list. Those are the stakes. Underway right now and have been for years. And not just for them, but for their families. So many of these guys were young. Several of them had I saw either young kids themselves or kids on the way. Our heart breaks for you. And we thank you for everything that you have done for us. You're listening to Clay,.

"To actually rank them was more difficult. Because i love conway twitty and this. I decided was my all time favorite of his. You're welcome to your own. It's actually oddly enough. A remake of a beatles song from a few years. Before did i. I'm sorry veggies that beatles of ob-gyn song from a few years before now. Let's get to it. Joe biden left stranded a number of americans in afghanistan. He allowed more than a dozen of our service members to be slaughtered by these awful awful human beings and then during the dignified transfer ceremony. He looked at his watch. If you've heard as you've heard our guest talk about even the liberal washington post reported on. Joe biden's meeting with the gold star families. He even tries to pass himself off as being a goldstar dad. He's not his son was not killed in battle. He died of cancer. I don't wish that on anybody but that doesn't make you a goldstar dad but he keeps trying act like he is listen carefully to what he says. I don't think enough people understand how much we've asked that. The one percent of this who put that uniform on willing to put their lives on the line in defense of our nation maybe because my deceased son beau served in iraq for a full year before that. Maybe it's because of what i've seen over the years as senator vice president and then president traveling these countries. His sentence trailed off about his son because he couldn't remember the washington post reported. The liberal washington post reported that mark. Schmidt's the father of marine lance corporal. Jared schmitz quote did not want to hear about biden's son beau. He wanted to talk about his son. Jared eventually the parents took out a photo to show to biden. I said don't you ever forget that name. Don't you ever forget that face. Don't you ever forget. The names of the other twelve schmidt said and take some time to learn their stories biden. Didn't seem to like that. Schmitz recalled and he bristled offering a blunt response. I do know their stories. Mcgurn rights over the last. Two weeks is a william mcgurn from wall street journal that over the last two weeks biden quote bizarrely keeps invoking his son the late. Major beau biden a delaware army national guard lawyer who served honorably in baghdad and whose early death from brain cancer was tragic but has nothing to do with afghanistan. Much less the eleven marines navy. Cormon army soldier killed in thursday's suicide bombing. Mr biden is not a gold star father and should stop playing one on tv during biden's week remarks yesterday. He couldn't bring himself to mention. The names of the servicemembers killed in afghanistan last week but he did once again mentioned bow and that he served in iraq as a lawyer. But you noticed in his voice trailed off because his mind trailed off. The man is demented. So we spent some time going through and listening to the audio of joe biden starting in nineteen seventy two when he joined the senate and comparing that to twenty twenty one so that you could hear the cognitive decline is inability to speak clearly and this is a relatively recent phenomenon and it is headed down the cliff. Fast.

"Those book to. Npr's audie cornish from doha. Now president biden said this week that ninety eight percent of americans who wanted to leave afghanistan were able to those remaining americans. There is no deadline. We remain committed to get them out if they want to come out. Fighting also defended his decision not to keep the. Us military in the country longer doing so he argued would have required sending even more troops into harm's way and at a time when veterans face battles at home to eighteen of them a day on average die by suicide. I don't think enough people understand how much we've asked of the one percent of this country who put that uniform on willing to put their lives on the line in defense of our nation two thousand four hundred sixty one american troops died in afghanistan over the last twenty years thirteen of them just this past week in that attack on the kabul airport. One of those was marine lance corporal. Jared schmitz he was twenty years old just six months old when nine eleven happened. Jared was an energetic little guy. He he was constantly happy. If you have the opportunity to look through our photo albums you would see that no matter how. He captured him on a camera. He was always smiling nonstop. Carrots father mark. He told npr that jared decided in high school instead of going to college following his dad in the family business. He wanted to join the marines. Yeah it was About sophomore year of high school gut reaction probably an equal mix of proud crowdedness as well as fear concern. But i knew that it fit like a glove. Then last month it came time for jarod's first deployment. He told his dad. He couldn't say where he was going. And like a good father got it out of him And told them you know you got to be incredibly careful. Jared stayed in touch with his dad when he got to kabul. They texted back and forth but at one point last week it had been a few days since they'd been in contact mark schmidt's shared what happened next within. Npr's rachel martin so then when this attack happened i was just gut wrenching feeling for our military and their families. You know that somebody just lost her life over this in the back of my mind though. Of course thinking my mom my son's okay. At least you know. That's thank god for that. You know another day goes by still hadn't heard from. I'm starting to get kind of worked up and upset like what's going on. Why is he not getting all of us in my friend. Patrick who's a marine as well. He's lucky he's real busy so he'll get to you when he can ensure everything's spine and It was later that night to forty in the morning. You're knocking on the door. And there's two dark silhouettes on the other side of our glass door slip. The porch light on and lights just went right on their ribbons and medals on their. You know the rest part of their jackets and uniforms. My heart just sunk. you know. i'm like okay. They're here to tell me he's injured. But is injuries are it took forever for them to get me to comprehend that they were there to deliver the most horrific moose so that conversation. Where you manage to get jared to tell you. He was deploying taff ghanistan. That was that was your last with him. That was my last phone conversation with him. But we we've been able to stay in communication via tax. I was looking for some information that he had given me a while back. So i have to jump in my text messages today and i went back and scroll back to most recent conversations with him and just to make sure. I always tell your kid. You'll love them. But you just wanna make sure you got that last one in you know and i did thank god but You know so hard. Because i was scrolling back so far i've alway back to father's and there's a message from him in there and My son is telling me how proud he is of me. Here's new idea. Last weekend mark schmidt's went to dover air force base when his sons remains and those of the other servicemembers killed were returned to the us he and jared's mother had a chance to meet with president. Biden there mark. Says he almost didn't go through with it. I just. I didn't have a lot of good thoughts about the man when president biden did me with mark and jared's mother. She pulled up a photo on her phone sent to them. By one of jared fellow marines and it was the last photo of our son taken that the morning of 'em we showed it to him and kinda stared at it and mumbled something. I couldn't really make out what he said. But as he's looking at a picture of my son. I just flat out said to jared jared schmitz ever forget that name and don't forget the name of the twelve others when you need to spend some time learning their stores who they were and then that's when he kind of described it as barking back. Because i don't know how else to really describe it. But he says i know their stores. I thought was. That's literally impossible. You know in. Why are you arguing with me. And then of course you mentioned his son again and i will. I will say fairness soon. As i got done speaking about that. And he said but he said he reached into his pocket and pulled out a card. And obviously this wasn't set up. Because this was immediately after what i said he pulls the car out and shows me number. Didn't know what the number met but after that number was plus thirteen and he explained to me that he keeps his card with them every day as a reminder of everyone has been lost. So there's that i'll give the guy kudos hem showing up and having to do what he had to do. Given the circumstances of.

It passed off to barack obama by republicans but they immediately started turning around saying where the jobs. Why are you bailing out. The banks and the deficit. That's the country that the last democratic president was ended now fast forward twelve years just thinking country that was handed over joe biden a global pandemic in which the us performed terribly more than six hundred thousand americans dead millions of people out of work millions unable to pay their rent result and crucially millions under the sway of political movement led by that former president. Feeding them this information and constant lies about both democracy and public health and under these conditions the biden administration has done an incredible job on a number of fronts. The vaccine rollout was an amazing. Bit of logistics competence. Passing the big recovery bill that included new child tax credit help families badly in need of assistance managing the recovery economy which is now trending the right way wages are finally rising swiftly and they have also had places where they have fallen short and even messed up very very badly there many immigration facilities for example for minors. That remain awful. We've reported on whistle blowers talk about that. Even if some of them are improvement from the trump administration another issue global vaccine distribution which is of the utmost importance is nowhere near word needs to be and it is true that many folks members of congress veterans groups human rights groups warned this white house bind ministration about the backlog a special visas for afghans for months and those warnings. Well they went pretty unheeded but again. Why is joe biden. The one ending this war after twenty years one answer is because donald trump was too much of a coward to actually do it. Donald trump could have gotten the us out entirely. Mr the endless worst could have done it. Sent a secretary state. Mike pompeo to meet with the head of the taliban three times in february temper november. Two thousand twenty. You made plans to pull out but never did it. So it was passed off to the new administration. This happening on joe biden's wash. It was left to this administration to coordinate. How the us would get out. And now the evacuation of more than one hundred ten thousand people that evacuation meant that american service members were putting vulnerable position trying to get people out and yesterday. The worst manageable happened at those airport gates. Now let me be clear. Joanne's president is states and this happened present. There should be congressional hearings. There should be oversight. Absolutely but i just cannot stomach watching feckless. Republicans and right wing. Tv personalities callously carping about this particularly purveyors of the same war and war. Nonsense that have gotten us to this point. We come back. I'll talk to someone who's involved in cleaning the last republican and has a deep understanding of our wars in iraq and afghanistan. Next there has been too much tragedy to bear in afghanistan over the past twenty years both servicemembers and afghan civilians. Their time you have to ask yourself. What is the mission. Why did this happen. Because the mission for much of that time was unclear as unclear as soon as bin laden got away. Probably the service servicemembers that died for died. Yesterday was a clear. One was to get americans and our allies out of afghanistan. They were. they're on the frontlines saving lives. They gave their lives for it and after their deaths mission continued according to the administration. Roughly twelve thousand five hundred people were evacuated between yesterday and this morning despite that horrific act of mass murder. And that's a point of pride for all the service members taking part in this mission did and continue to do their jobs. Ben rhodes served as deputy national security visor. President barack obama worked on the iran nuclear deal. He's author of after the folding america in the world we made of and he joins me now. Just i start on this the sort of cleaning up other messes kind of point. I mean i guess the first question. I wanna ask. You is when you look at this. Do you think like we should have done this. We we should have gotten out of their ten years ago. It was a mistake not to and we left it for this administration.
