"To cinema veno. We're going to talk a little bit about morbius going to do a little mini podcast. Mini pod. So Travis and I have seen it and we're going to talk a little bit about our thoughts on it. You can also look and catch my review at Todd waffle movies dot com. Hear my very strong opinions about it. But I'm curious to hear Travis opinion first. We'll do as best we can to do spoiler free because it just came out a lot of people haven't seen it yet. General thoughts on it. What did you think? So vampire movies and superhero movies are right up my alley. I went in knowing I was going to hate this. And I didn't super hate it. It was not good. By any stretch of the imagination, I still thought it was better than venom two, let the re carnage. But there is no intentional humor at all in this film. There's attempts and there are terrible you could go see this and make it a joke with your Friends. It's not great, but I still somehow enjoyed it. Yeah. I thought it was atrocious. But I have not enjoyed venom, carnage. Either one of those part one or two. I did not enjoy this movie. At least. I giggled. I giggled at this one too. Second one, I don't even think I laughed. No, it was just straight up bad. It was a straight up bad movie. I thought this was honestly there were moments in this. It was like, I laughed. I laughed at it. I almost gave this an extra star for how much I left at this movie. It was literally like, there were a few other people in the theater, and they were away at the back of the theater, I was toward the front. So I couldn't tell their reaction, but literally I was laughing at the screen. About how bad this was. I don't want to give anything away, but it's like moments where Jared Leto, his performance was bizarre, I mean, it's like you go back to House of Gucci. I mean, it's like, I can't tell if this is great or it's terrible. I don't know..

"Genuinely, everything I do in my life is to not pay for therapy and not working. So I'm reviewing it's I'm reviewing the house of Gucci film, but it's more the experience of watching House of Gucci film. So on Saturday, I went to see a noon 12 o'clock show and of how Gucci in my new local cinema totally empty. I went there with my own microwave popcorn and tea in a flask. And I genuinely felt like I had broken 50 cents house and I was using his personal cinema. It was an amazing experience. I was there on my own. The fat suit that Jared Leto wore. It was hilarious. We've seen the house of Gucci trailer. So Jared Leo plays a man called Paolo, who I Googled, not even fat. The man in real life was not even fun, but they were like, no, we gotta put a fat suit on Jared Leo. You know they didn't say that. You know that Jared Leto just brought a fat suit to set that day. I swear 'cause he goes eco so far in with the Italian accident as well as I was trying to bomb and with the fact that he looks like a cross between a dull meal popper and not your professor in the clubs. Like honestly, it's like dumb meal clumps. Like that's what could be a good product. Tell me how I would buy that. I would also the accents are incredible. It's two hours, 40 minutes long. And the person that they're based on this woman, your one Gucci, I can't remember a first name. So she assassinated her husband, which is fair enough, not fair, I mean. She went to prison and she had an emotional support ferret. This is in real life. And another prisoner killed the emotional support by sitting on a bio accident. This was never depicted in the film. They depicted tanks avoidance. But they fought no, let's not put in the emotional support for it. Let's show the tax avoidance and this two hour 40 minute film. So I've given it. I'm giving it a two out 5. And there's a not to be rude or anything, right?.

Because i think this is kinda sort of the age old question. Could you take on the mouse. No matter if you're scar. Joe are you who joe or flurry joe. On the mouse. I couldn't do it. Everyone deserves their money that they work for the whole industry is changing. And if you're not going to change our contracts that's going to affect a lot of people who make a lot less than me. Not money had a huge problem with this. And they had to pay two hundred million dollars to actors like denzel washington kion reeves dagano so they also had this problem. "So he's kind of far. So i didn't get the conversation of talking to jared leto because i wasn't going to live on my phone like start recording us and like and i didn't even know if that was him or not right but based off of is answers saying something like that when i asked him if he an actor and then you know and then based off of what he was wearing on the pier and then what he was wearing on instagram. Like that same day in a few days prior it was hundred percent. Jared leto so so freaking coal. We met conversation with jared leto and he was cool like he was like literally. Just chill normal person. I mean famous people like they're normal regular people so the whole time we were just like. Oh my god. That's so cool. Jared leno leto and I i didn't see the joker movie. I saw the joaquin miller one. I didn't see the suicide squad now. I want to go back and watch him. And i don't even think that i've seen a movie with him in. We do know randy does know that he is preparing for a role right now or like shooting a role right now. Our the actor. The rule is very very skinny. So that's why jared had lost a lot of weight by so cool leto. After that we went to chinatown and we went to this dumping spot. That's a really really popular. Everyone's been telling me to go and susie really wanted to go. It's called joe's shanghai usually. It's like an hour or two way. But i guess we got there early enough at the perfect time where i think like. They're probably around like five like four or five and there was no wait and they just had his right away. Thank goodness yeah you get the the pork. The pork soup dumplings their fire. We got the the shrimp without the shrimp like spicy spicy sauce. Meat sauce shrimp. And that's pretty much it like. That's all i really liked from there. They didn't have the prins. They didn't really have like crab rangoon or anything like that. It's more. it's more like a traditional chinese restaurant where they don't have the american chinese entrees there so those are the only things i would get. We got noodles two. And i didn't really care if the noodles but the dump things are to die for like. That's what people in new york that places known in chinatown. It's like a place to go so if ever want to get dumplings trying to town go to joe's shanghai. It's on like bowery street so we did that and then by that time. Randy's scooter was dying. His was on read all of ours. Were like above reh like above half but scooters rainy scooter was dying so we just wachter scooters down the stairs of the subway we took the subway up to midtown and his scooter did last from the train to our.

"We don't need to steal your phone. Let me just say like. I hate people that still phones. It is like the brokest most just annoying thing to have your phone stolen like people who run around stealing phones like you need a real job like get get a real job get a life. Nolan should be out here stealing phones like you really ruin. Someone's week when you steal their phone like if they don't have insurance they don't have this and now like then they have to cash out for a brand new phone. It sucks all your contacts all your photos laws if it's not backed up to the cloud it's so stupid so him accusing us of stealing his phone. It's like your dome bro. like you're dumb. All these people at the bar like staring at it so awkward or walking out the guys screaming at us as walking out the balance the the bar. People like the bouncers and stuff like what's going on the guys being super disrespectful to randy mind you randy is gay. So this guy's out here like saying crazy slurs to randy and we're just like are you serious dude. Like randy's getting so angry. He's about a fight this guy like he is about to go full ape on this white dude in randy. You don't wanna see randy game out. You don't wanna see randy go ape so susan's have comedy down like randy. It's not worth it please. Like they're gonna. They're probably going. Call a cop on us like let's just go and it was true. Like there was already so much ruckus everywhere. We feel like the cops. Were just around the corner waiting for something like this to happen and luckily randy is a grown adult and was able to control himself and not get into a fight but he easily cut off. It would have been bad because there was no other guys to back up and like means you're going to throw hands if we have to throw hands but it's just we're going to get hit by these guys and it was just going to be a hot mess so we ended up leaving and there was.

"So i didn't have this big board and all the buttons and all that it was just really easy for me to do it at home and this was the first time demanded the board by myself and i definitely did a few hiccups like i was editing. Phone calls on air like in between songs like it made into on air and it was very awkward like people were like texting me like crystal. I can hear you crystal like turn that down. We can hear you editing. The call my own. My god and then another time like the phone didn't work so i just had to run a different studio to pick up a phone call and it was not my best show but that's okay i called. I called my boss afterwards and she was also helping me out too and we had like a briefing about it. And i was just listening for every break but i told her i was like there was definitely some hiccups like i was editing calls on air. And she's like you know what it's okay like. It was your first time on the board. Now you know next time you have your shifts like it's going to be way better and you're not gonna make those mistakes we're just gonna keep going and we're gonna learn so that made me feel so good that because i was so down on myself i was like dang crystal umeda to new york. The next high and more way more comfortable the next time. I had so much support from listeners. Out here and you listeners at home saying it's okay crystal you know like it's like your first.

Rats screamed the top of my lungs. Look back at the train lady. And she's like a rat she like mouths. I mean she's like did you see a rat is that yes. And she's like sis. Get used to it so i met my first new york city rat. That was so cute. That was fun that was fabulous and then yeah friday my besties were in town susie and her brother randy now susie and i go way way back. She was like my first best friend kind of outside of school. I am when i was a freshmen. In highschool started as a celia drew police explorer. I was a saline drip police explore. Because i really wanted to be a spy. I wanted to be in the cia. And i don't know where. I heard it or read it that. If you want to be in the cia you have to be a cop. I for a few years after years. I found out that that was not true. At all but nonetheless here's freshman crystalline high school. I want to be a spy. One day i want to be in the cia. So i signed up to be a police explorer with san leandro police department which is essentially like cadets. It's like yeah. It's pretty much police cadets but they just name it so much more corny for us. I don't know why we were. The san leandro police explorer it gives me like is russell from upright picks up i think he was like a an explorer. Something kind of gives me that vibe. But susie and her cousin maryland were the only girls in the whole police explorer squad. I think there were like ten twelve of us total and we were the three only girls and means susie off about really really got along and we just became best ds. I mean susie got a car like fifteen. Dodd got her car instead of a kenia so we were mobbing in her car. My only trusted me with suzy. I could only hang out with her. Could only over her house like my mom. Never let me sleep over. Anyone's house was really only allowed to sleep over like suzy's and my friend ali and my god sister is like my sister. you've heard talk about isabella. So suzie was my outside of school. Friend that i was able to hang out with because her parents are guatemalan. My parents he'd gone nose and our parents pretty much have exact in culture. So i'm really trusted me around her parents and her family. So yeah me. And my means suzy would mob me and suzie. What on our. I like double date together. The guys ended up standing up susie. What made a whole fake email account from our police department squad. l. dot explores. Jared Leto on new movie 'The Little Things' and being an Oscar winner
"Hi everyone. I am peter travers. This is popcorn where we tell you. What's going on at the movies. And i saw terrific movie right now called the little things. This is a movie about two cops played by of all people in washington and rami. Malek in search of someone they think is a serial killer in nineteen ninety los angeles and this guy that they focused on is played by my guest today. jared leto. Who usually gives them a run for their money in terms of letting them twist in the wind deciding whether his character is guilty is he. A serial killer is he not. I've got to tell you jared that this is one of my favorite performances of yours. It's it's like a co lassic kind of movie villain that we don't know if he's guilty of what he's accused of but we know is guilty of something definite strange character but he has humor is playful. He's all those things that make you remember character. So did you feel when you first read the script. No i said what is this. I don't wanna do this. I is was actually buy those my response. I thought you know. Maybe i should explore different territory. You know. I played a kind of than the darker side of the moon. A bit and You know. I thought maybe this wasn't the right thing to do And then after talking to john lee. Hancock and i realized that there there could be an opportunity. Here's he seemed really open. I said if we're going to do this together. I'd like to to to kind of use it as an exercise in transformation to to really try to sculpt this this this wild man albert's pharma Into something quite unlike anything. I'd done before so he seemed really game And the prospect to working with denzel washington one of my heroes and then rami malek in the mix. It was just couldn't say no. And what i love about you. Working with them is that yes albert. Your character trump really tries to drive the both of them crazy and with a kind of zen deadpan. That you have yourself you know. There's i don't want to say there's a little of you albert but there's there's some of it in. Yeah sure i've been. You know you you take parts of yourself. Other people Experiences that you've had and you kinda just build this collage you know i it with. Albert's parma was head to toe from the walk to the voice. I had different color is different knows different teeth. I had some other prosthetics different way of carrying myself and it was quite exciting to put this guy to life and to really take risk and push things right up to the edge And hopefully not crossover into absurdity But yeah he is a bit An un unwittingly unknowingly zinn. He is the voice of like maybe a soothing yoga teacher or something does. There's one i don't want to spoil any platt detests. But there's one point where they both taking you to the police station in la. It's an interrogation room and the phone rings and albert says is that for me. You know quite a quite innocent with it. It's that kind of thing that he's open to sort of any moment until he's ready to spring with something that will make denzel crazy. Sic chrissy i. there's nothing more fun than you know. antagonizing the other characters in the film and for spar he knew he uses that as a tool a likes to keep people off balance off center and humor is one of the ways that he does it and it was quite fun to show on saddened to bring all kinds of different Ideas for ad libs and improv and John lee hancock was amazing. Because you know he was the writer as well but incredibly generous with the opportunity to improvise ad-lib and he really just let me go to town. Would you haven't worked with denzel rami before right. No no no. I had an an. I didn't know them Either and i mean what was kind of fun as well as that didn't do any rehearsal like for the interrogation senior talking about that was the first scene with all three of us and the first big seen it was quite intense and intimidating Exciting there was a lot of pressure and it was explosive on sad. It was it was there. Were fireworks going off. It was really exciting to get in the ring with those guys. Everyone came prepared. I think we all knew there was an opportunity there and we all took advantage of it. Well you know all you have oscars so now. Nobody can ask you to do anything. You don't wanna do right. You just hold that thing up. You can take it with you that day. You want you could certainly a casa damage with it It is a you know. Denzel washington said the other day. You know trophies the they it's like when you're a prizefighter that the belt you won the last times not going to help me this time in the ring and Is true you know you you. It's beautiful thing to be acknowledged and winning the oscar. Was you know. An unforgettable highlight of my life and share that with my family and my friends and supporters Through my life was a really special thing. It doesn't help you when you're sitting opposite denzel washington and you've got to
Snubs and surprises from this year's Golden Globe nominations
"The globe. Nominations happened and boy. They'd seemed a mess. How do you feel hi. How are you feeling about words and being back. I guess i'm glad to have award season back though isn't it. We can discuss specific to these nominations. I feel a little bit like charlie brown with the football because every year we talk about make fun of the hollywood foreign press association. And let's be clear we're going to continue to make fun of them. They are traditionally. It's a small group of international journalists. Who do not have a lot of renown really know outside of the fact that they are in this mysterious priests small group of people. They really like celebrities or their definition of another other thing. We'll discuss and their star fuckers and they give nominations to people they want in a room rather than a merit or at least our interpretation of merit. It seems like to win an award. You just have to go to as many parties as possible and then think the association from the stage. We know that there are always bad. Choices always mysterious traces. We're always like what is going on. Who are these people. Why do we do this. But i would say even for the hollywood foreign press association and even for a film here had some challenges aka pandemic theaters being close and far fewer films released unusual. These are real embarrassing. And i woke up just being like. Are you serious. We have to do this again. Like come on yeah i. It's hard to know we've gone through looking glass or not some of these. I think we're fairly standard and expected in their plenty of movies that i'm sure we'll be talking about when we get to the oscar nominations in a couple months but there were a handful of nominations. What what. I will generously called the surprises. That just took my breath away. That i i think even in my wildest dreams i could not have imagined the fbi concocting so. Let's just talk about them because this award show is happening really soon. It's february twenty eight. It's gonna be hosted by. Amy poehler and tina fey. It's going to be on nbc. And so we're going to actually having awards season to cover for real for real. I think we have to start with the jared leto nomination for the little things. This is probably the single biggest. W t.f of this collection and it's funny because when we talked about the little things on the show last week i think we both walked away from the little things thinking. Jared leto is pretty entertaining in it. And maybe rising to the challenge of this camp script and that being said i. I never considered him. A worthy report surprised to see this nomination. I enjoyed watching him in the little things in the context of the little things which was not a film that worked at all and so at least someone was doing something you know and i was talking with friends about it. There's like a really a nice like vintage. This is bad feeling to the little things that i found pretty comforting. You know it's like it's not like someone just made a twitter thread into a movie on an iphone and like someone wrote a script and they tried to do this old ninety staying. And then jared leto is doing the weird villain and having too much fun with it. It's like i know what's happening here even if it's not working and and i'm glad to have it back. I do not know that it needed to rise to the level of golden globes ovation especially because the golden globes supporting category does not differentiate between drama and comedy in some of the comedy. Nominations things get wild. But that's because you're kind of you're filling it out there some extra slots. A lot of people didn't get nominated in supporting actor. Jared leto like weird joke of serial killer. I think he's right. Can we talk about that for a second. This is dangerous rabbit hole to go down. I have no idea. The truth is. I don't know i think you're meant to believe that he did. Not if you haven't seen this movie. Sorry for spoiling it for you. It's unspoiled in many ways because it has an ambiguous ending of sword. I- i- i- jared. Leto obviously is has won an academy award. He is a very famous person has been celebrated. He's also like kind of a joke. You know like. I really enjoy him as a performer. A famous person. But he's kind of a joke. I mean he's he so Has all of the pretensions. And absurdity of the method actor who sort of you know pulling pranks on his cast members by trying to get into character and so outside and so masking his beauty all the time with these ridiculous roles you know like in the little things that character has like a is is fat and walks with a limp and why it's just pure actually affect nation and the role is actually affectation and the asia was impressed by that or impressed. By the idea of having jared sit in on their award show. But jared. Leto is not tom hanks. For example someone who did not get knocked out.
'The Little Things' stars Jared Leto, Rami Malek, Denzek Washington is a stirring crime thriller
"Denzel Washington Rami Malek and Jared Leto collide in the little things a mystery premiering today on HBO. Max, a jaded detective tracks a serial killer in the San Fernando Valley. It must really like my car. Do I was the trunk space. Denzel Washington gives a complex performance as a cop willing to bend the rules. Unlike his idealistic deputy, Ramsey Malik during a cat and mouse game with Jared Leto's creepy suspect, writer director John Lee Hancock has been trying to get a script made since 1993 feeling like a nineties thriller like the Silence of the Lambs. It's a shame it wasn't made back Then, as we've since seen the same concept done much better in seven Zodiac and prisoners. Still, I'm a mark for this John Rush trying to solve the case, even if we've seen it

"As of today news radio. Wait. 40 wh s so what do you think about that? Hayley, can you show up for work at a movie day after day shoot scenes with someone? And never feel like you met the other person who's in the scenes with you because you are in character. Is that little weird? We know that's absolute, especially Jared Leto. He's such a character actor, too. Method Actor whatever they're called, so he just works himself up into this person this this character, and he can't like even during the at the buffet for lunch when they break for lunch. And you reach for a piece of rye bread and Denzel Washington's right there, he said. Could you pass the ketchup? You wouldn't say also, it's really great to meet you. You're you're still that character from the movie. Yeah. You still have that same personality, So, Yeah, I guess you could still talk to him offset, but it's not gonna be days. Yeah, here. He did. An interview with variety. You know, the Hollywood news source or sight or whatever it's called, and they do a segment called actors on actors. The host is John David Washington talking with Jared Leto, who's in this thriller that little things opposite Denzel Washington. And they're talking about being on the set and working to your question is well. Haven't rehearsed in a movie it in 10 years. Haven't rehearsed. I just for some reason or another never worked out for rehearsal. I don't have a rule against it. But usually I just I'm ready to go and I don't I still haven't even Never. I still haven't met Mr Washington. Wait home, So there were 71 minute. You have anything that, uh what you do? You just arrived on set as the character in that one, and then it zit. That's peculiar to me. It's Jared Leto. Every time he talks, I just rolled my eyes. I don't know what it is about him. But you're an actor. That's your job, But you're seriously you think that they did. They never were just standing in the parking lot while they were moving cranes and lights around or whatever. And he just said, Hey, I really liked seeing you in training day there. You were. Just awesome was Malcolm X? I mean, no, but he just stares back at him. As the character I up. Boy. It would be difficult to live with somebody like that. Don't talk to me. I am the character for the next four weeks while we're shooting this movie, honey, uh, can you can use your shoes or in the hallway again there? Don't talk to me. I don't know who you are. I mean, what or do you just have to always use their? Don't call me Denzel. Call me Frederick Tens. I don't think I don't think themselves that way. I think themselves the greatest actor of our time, and I don't think he acts like that at home. I don't think he acts that way at home. I think Jared Leto acts that way at home, then Yeah, well, yeah, I would agree with that. You have to talk to him and character. Don't look at him or calling by the character there was like whatever. Dude, come on. It's a job. Stop. Stop making this seem it like it's bigger than it really is. You're a guy who stand somewhere opposites. One other person or multiple people in your reading words that are written on cars that are just off screen. Stop it. And it's a fun job. It's a desirable job. It's a challenging job, that's for sure. But and most people in it don't make much money. They're extras and whatever other but they just do it for the thrill of being in a film, But it's the stars who obviously people talk about, but to act like a time. She's a pained actress. Oh, my God. She was led to drugs because she just couldn't take the pressure of reading the words that the Minimum wage person holding on a sign right next to the camera lens. It was such challenging. She had to remember her character. I mean, sometimes those words are hard to read. Terry, stop it. I've never met Denzel. What? What the hell are you talking about? You're the room with him on it. He just forgot what made him famous. But I know it was an oddball character in one movie several years ago because my wife is like that Dude's weird. He was in a band called 30. I think he still is called 30 seconds to Mars, and it's like a punk band. And it made sense. He made sense in that scenario, But then when he moved to acting, I was like, I don't like you in this area. Go back to the other one didn't get an Academy Award Several years ago is some whack job and some movie. I think I'm China. I know you was the Joker in the suicide squad one I think he got the Academy Award for that movie Dallas Club or something with some buyers Dallas buyers Club that was with Matthew McConaughey. Matthew McConaughey was brilliant in that film. But there's Makana haters, another guy who would never act like one of those, Jack. We just like those tough to me, everybody. Yeah, he's just like, Hey, man, Whatever you want to talk about, you know here comes on college GameDay and makes football picks or whatever. He's a regular dude. In fact, he where he works for, um, beam distilleries..
'The Little Things' Is A Star-Studded, Old-School Serial Killer Thriller
"Um okay, So let's move over to, um, the thing that we were just talking about just a while ago. Why are we all talking about Jared Leto right now? Yeah. So he's in this movie called the little things that the on each feel, Max and and feeders. You got that? Don't you calling? I do I have that. Yeah. So start. You know Denzel Washington places better than cop he had back to his old stomping ground in L. A in order to help chase down the serial killer. Before the seventh victim was claim. Robin Malik is the new detective. That's kind of leading the case. So they've got a bad and you've got this new concept by those two. And then Jared Leto is someone they kind of have their eyes on. He's super creepy, super greasy looking. And you had allegedly that he is a killer. And throughout this movie, you're like you see, actually the killer or is this kind of a Mr AC on? Maybe just a token off kind of police blindness, If you well, I don't wanna get too much because it really kind of scratches that age if you like. That kind of grisly crime, psychological thriller serial killers. I do love me a good show color movies eat, right. It just kind of leaves you on edge the entire time.
The Little Things Movie Review
"Okay one less title. That's out this week. This went on in theaters and on. Hbo max i believe It's the little things which is a detective thriller. It is both set in the early nineties and feels a little bit like a time. Capsule from early nineties It starts in washington with rami. Malik and jared leto. Three best actor oscar winners. That's kind of a rare sight There it. I enjoyed the throwback quality of it while also thinking it was yet another of the stone cold boomers. We're talking about this week Richard i think you might have enjoyed it. Listen i did even. I didn't like it at all. I really wanted it to be something specific that of that was written in the early nineties. Steven spielberg directed. Imagine so strange are and then. I think clint eastwood was looking at it and deigned veto and finally john lee hancock wrote it decided to make himself twenty seven years later. I wanted it to be kind of one of those nineties. Post silence of the lambs. Serial killer studio thrillers. You know a little grimy kind of silly but like engaging good detective work kind of stuff and it has those trappings but at the center is kind of a weird void at the center. I think it's kind of trying to be about something bigger and fails at that. And so everything else kind of doesn't get its proper do denzel washington's always good rummy. Malik is fine. Jared leto. People people's tolerance level of him certainly varies. And he's really doing a thing you know and i found it engaging for like the first scene and then i was like okay i get it. I don't even more so for me. It was just like it had all these interesting component parts. But the whole didn't really didn't do it for me.
interview With Meagan Crawford
"Well. Megan welcome to manage and cut off. This has been a year overdue at this point. An entire pandemic overdue. Maybe i'm happy that you're here talking to us. I'm really thrilled to be here. Thank you for having me anything so to start. I want everyone to meet you. Because you're awesome So you are a member of space fund. You also have this podcast mission eve. That is fantastic. Can you tell everyone a little bit about you sure. Yeah co founder and managing partner of space fund Where venture capital firm investing exclusively in the new space ecosystem so very kind of targeted fund And then i also have my podcast mission eve which I interview the most amazing women in the space industry. It's just been a thrill and just so much fun to do. And in the hopes of inspiring more women to join us here in the space industry So that's that's a project that's near and dear to my heart I'm also on. The board of several nonprofits needs to do a quick shout out the space frontier foundation. The center for space commerce finance mars initiative and the earth light foundation Spend an inordinate amount of my time helping those at nonprofits. So i think that's probably about it so we're gonna talk about a bunch of different angles on the finance side of stuff which i occasionally touch on but probably not as deeply as i should in many cases there's some fundraising that has happened. In the past year that has been particularly notable for the size specifically spacex relativity. Been getting gargantuan amounts of money there's some acquisitions that have happened recently. And then There's a whole trend of holding companies. That i find quite interesting as well as a trend that i find interesting and more shady. Which is this whole special purpose acquisition friend. Those are the things. I want to pick your brain about. Is there an order. would you like to start with fundraising and then get into what happens after. You've gotten a bunch of funding and actually accomplish things. What's the right order there. Yeah well I think i'd like to start with this kind of startling statistic that that i i like to I like to bring up a lot. Is that One and it's it's one of the reasons that spaceman was founded. Actually is you know. Currently launched comprises less than two percents of the global space economy yet has received seven percent of the venture capital. Today right sounds crazy but it. It makes such intuitive sense to like you know somebody watches the markets but exactly crazy. Yeah that's crazy. Yeah i like it when you hear that you're like oh yeah that seems right but holy crap. That's crazy just hear those numbers right and now the one question i would have is. Does that. include any space x funding as launch. Yes that includes spacex funding and includes the you know that big relativity rounded includes all of that. So i guess that's my that would be. My stipulation is like how. How do you separate out. What of that is going to starlink. zach satellites. Then does that skew it or is it not big enough to actually skew. Anything no matter how you classify either couple billion. Yeah so you know the regardless. It's it's a huge number even if he were to try and take starlink out of the kind of the space x portion of that. They're going to be forty percent of the venture right number exactly exactly and so you know when When my partner. Rick tomlinson and i were contemplating a founding space fund. You know this was one of the things that was really bothering us. We were kind of looking around the industry at all of our our friends and colleagues. Who are these brilliant entrepreneurs going and down sandhill road and couldn't get any funding and meanwhile while all these other. Vc's are just pouring good money. After bad into launch company after launch company because all ilan has launched company and basil's has launched company and jared. Leto is invested in in relativity space so i need a launch company. Right and base fund is currently tracking a hundred and sixty two active launch companies around the world.
Do the celebrities help the startups or do the startups help the celebrities?
"So this week. We saw that josh richards. Who is a tiktok star previously of the sway house which is one of the many tiktok mansions that have kind of popped up over los angeles as influence or homes. Josh richards is joining remiss capital and early stage venture firm as a venture partner. And as i'm sure we will get into not super nudist see celebrities get into venture space. They have huge reach. They can do a lot for especially consumer businesses with a simple instagram story. And so maybe the place to start with with the josh richards. Conversation is like really bullish on this transition. What would we say like what is good about this transition and then we can make the jokes because i know there will be jokes. But let's start with why this makes sense. Alex i okay. I have been critical in the past of celebrity investing. Because it's always struck me as little bit frivolous but i think that's because i underestimated the cultural impact of people of the moment and according to iverson will group text that i'm on with my friends. Talk is the thing. So if you are an enormous star in the tiktok world getting you involved with the company makes a lot of sense and my thought here is that i think in the old as we go to see more endorsements opposed to investments. You know you'd say like we're going to get you know josh richards or charlie delio or bryce. I'm reading the notes price hall to endorse your party to the long tail of knowledge for tiktok star. I see tiktok. But i don't know who the people are because i'm not cool at all but i think now with took being so popular and having so much cultural resonance with people that are out there using their dollars so in mark influence. It's probably reasonable that these people are going from being endorsers to be invested because once they have more money themselves and they have enough power deployed demand a seat at the table to get some ups. I did a piece of the pie. So i want to make jokes but i won't. I'll just say that in the past celebrity has had a mixed track record. But in this case. I think bringing attention via celebrity and tiktok makes sense. Okay danny leterrier pros and cons. And then i will finish this off. I think the big question is always do. The celebrities helped startup or the startups helped the celebrities. I think some celebrities have made a lot of money on their investments by think in many ways celebrities get access and in in many ways. I'm not sure they actually create the value for these companies. But because of the celebrity status they sort of get an allocation the otherwise it wouldn't have been able to get you know obviously if you're having a startup the targets gen z. Tiktok is the platform to go about do that. I just don't think it helps anyone else you know i. I just think about the company's like okay. Let's let's hope about sky flow. You know this is the polymorphic. Encryption data security company. Get josh richards to help. On what i'm kidding. Of course not so its seat and that's ultimately like you know. I think it's always about these brand plays. I'm in new york. We have a ton of successful brand plays because of the so like may richards endorses bro. And its next round and is like the the next to the guy in the commercials. I forget which the famous movie stars was on there. No one knows that this group. We're not that demographic. Danny this is where the show. We're just taking a right to the gutter. I think they're definitely serves. They can use this. I think it's fine to venture partner. Josh has been very entrepreneurial and getting a bunch of stuff out there. But what i've heard. The guy makes f ton of money saving our producers gave them work there but a ton of money doing all these sponsorship deals. I think it's fine. I just think we have to like not change coverage and we focused on in which companies make money based on which celebrities are attached to which companies like. It's always good to go back to the dollars and sense and so. I don't think it changes what we do here at techcrunch. I'm certainly not going to cover story. I actually been pitched stories. That are like gosh. Richards has invested in this company. I was like. I don't know who that is. Take this to not work in my experience talking to celebrities in and around technology events. More broadly i talked to a former doctor who about surface once that was a fiasco but i did. Enjoy my child with jared leto at a boxing event because one. I got to take a picture with him. I was topless now funny and to he actually had some pretty good he is about starts so i think there is the occasional investor who's also celebrity. Who can do some reasonable things. I'm curious to see how this bears out. Ashton kutcher is investments. Have been up and down. So we'll see. But i'm not going to be dismissive of the kids.

"He's his his his tweet badly treatable now Yeah. His tweet where he announced it was. Very, positively worded and then the other thing is that the trailer for steeled on was dropped for the next expansion for fallout seventy six. So it looks it looks fun bring the Brotherhood of steel to Appalachia. But yeah. That's me next. Ango I have a couple the one I'll bring up. Is One time shared with me broke my little heart ventured announced that there is no plan season three. For Mind Hunter. At least for the next. What was it five? Five five years apparently the show's really expensive. Shows, really expensive. He's getting booked up on other projects And it's sad because I think we were getting to a great point with with Holt, McGinley's character. And his son and that whole thing and everyone in it was phenomenal day. Yes. Jonathan Groff is amazing So it's it's a little bit of heartbreak. But. It's not a definite. No. So It's a little slightly less sticky than when Constantine was canceled But. It's still got two seasons at least. Yeah right and it's not a no creative like not right now and we're in the midst of seeing things come back ten years later. Yes. Looking at you dexter my other big big news that I was taking notes on is October twenty eighth. So that's when this comes out on a Tuesday that means tomorrow tomorrow just put me off. No Sir Josh off. Because fine. Tomorrow. A little comic book called. Last Ronin is going to be released finally for the. Team and fans out there. You know this is it is written created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird who are the og creators who created into turtles in their college dorm Kevin Eastman does the appear layer does the writing, but they collaborate on story together. The stories about a sole surviving turtle. The three you're dead we have no idea who it is but the. Other weapons, the pictures they have all the weapons on them. So they have the staff, the Chuck's the CY and the swords. I obviously have a bias towards donatello but as a storyteller, I think Michelangelo's A. More interesting choice as far as last Ronin is, but we don't know yet. We will find out Wednesday. Yes I. Think it is done. Telo. Oh. Okay. Does who else out of all the other Ninja if they were to die, they'd have to be like now in the physical prowess sense, I have to step up but I also have to meticulously find out or like stop the people who did this you think Donna's the one for that. He's a close one who I'd say like in terms of Batman minded, he'd be the yeah. Yeah it'd be okay with that. I I would as a storyteller wants to see my key step up for once. I love. Off Yeah in a way in a sense but not. Done anything like this I feel like all the other turtles have had their moments of like they have their serious sides and they've all matured a little bit and Mike you still like the party dude, he's the fun once. Again..

Jared Leto set to reprise Joker in 'Justice League: The Snyder Cut'
"Joker is getting some justice in director Zack Snyder's new cut of Justice League. Snyder had to leave the film due to the death of his daughter. But now he's shooting new footage in order to remake the movie into what he originally intended. It'll air on HBO. Max Leto wasn't even in the original version of Justice Lee, but he's been called into play the Joker in some new scenes. Jared, of course, played the Joker in suicide squad, which was tied to justice. Lee, thanks to an appearance by Ben Affleck's Batman
A Critique of Dallas Buyer's Club
"Let's. Let's Talk About Dallas Buyers Club. I first and foremost all the triggers. Goddamn because everything you thought you knew about this movie you were right and then there's more. There's The the TRANSPHOBIA is there from the characters. It's enacted characters but it's also just that kind of trans-phobia where it's tucked under. Oh, it's actually homophobia but that's because they don't know what to do with someone who presents in a way that is not stereotypical. To one gender or another. and. Yes. So look up triggers for this movie. There are so many that I don't even feel like sitting down and listing them but look them up before you continue to consume this podcast and before you decide to watch that movie. That said, had you either? Have you seen this movie before we went to the podcast first time? For a first time on that radio to. See what I did there. On brand very unbranded. Yeah. It was my first time too. I definitely knew it. As you said, for all the reasons that I knew, and then there were more reasons that I was glad I did until now. Oh Yeah so This movie I have to say because I tried to as much as I'm trashing it as much as I'm like Oh this all this I really wanted to like this movie I went in wanting to like it I remember talking to a friend about this movie because I refused to see it. So I was like, why are people praising jared leto wire people praising his portrayal of Now, I can't remember the name of Rayon why and I actually had to coax it out of a friend because. This was a friend that I respected their opinion on and they basically said they were like, well, you don't actually want to know you wanna be mad and it's like, no I respect your opinion i. am asking you why people care what is it about this helped me and what this friend said to me was that the portrayal of someone who is going through a having aids being HIV positive and then having AIDS, and then dying from another disease which. It, it was the thing that really drew this friend of mine into the character and into the world of this film and as much as. We are going to talk about a lot of the specifics now having watched it. I respect that opinion. Even though I did not get the same thing from this movie. At least from from Rayon and that's really mean I also did not grow up like I grew up as a child during the AIDS crisis I did not know a lot going on but at the same time. The movie in my opinion the movie itself. Didn't do a great job with ray on. But I really dug the way that they dealt with. Woodruff Matthew. mcconaughey character in the first act. Yeah To to. Put My cards on the table for we continue. To very specific misconceptions or like nervous conceptions but two very specific things that we're going to my mind when I started watching the movie. Deborah really softened a lot of it for me, which was one. The last movie that I've seen that was in relation to the AIDS crisis was the film adaptation of Rent. which was the worst movie that's life. I it's just. Sorry And the others conception is that I didn't realize that it was made in twenty thirteen I thought like watching it. It felt like it was like an early two thousands movie in house can be like well. Okay like Even. The Straits don't really get chanced stuff I. It was like a good attempts to try to like bring more color to the table metaphorically speaking. But it's a twenty thirteen. I don't know like. I mean at times article didn't come out yet. It's just it's just weirder and it's also like. That film strikes very early two thousands and I'm not like sinophile so I could be completely dead wrong on this, but it just felt. Like You know way older movie than it actually ended up being. So. And that. Up Sorry and then I guess the third conception. Sorry. The secret third one was that I actually was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt because as soon as I found out that it was like historical like a history piece because runway was a real person. As like, Oh, well then you know if they had to deal with a real life trans person like they're they're dead in the water like you know they're not going to handle that well. But no round is is a real. She was made for the movie. So cool. Great. Love that for us. So. Yeah. I wonder because Silas one of the things that you had mentioned that you had focused on when talking about the movie was a lot more of a real life historical things that were going on and about the real life of what was happening. Can you talk a little bit about that? Yes so Aside, from knowing about, you know sort of the kerfluffle about jared leto playing the part and hearing a little bit about that when the movie came out the other thing that I really had a bee in my bonnet about is the fact that Ron Woodruff was not straight. And he did talk about long clearly had some stuff but. They just. Changed him to be straight and altered his character quite a bit and watching it. It's so clear to me that they were like, how do we make this the straight male hero anti hero type that the straight people will come see the movie for? And so that to me like before, we even get to any issues of transphobia homophobia of that in the Bi phobia that really just made me now it becomes this sort of like. The straight guy in the hero of a crisis that you know certainly straight people and all people belong to this lots of. It was but it was primarily focused on the queer. Community. And sort of start off before you even have a chance to give the film the benefit of the doubt with that erasure just really for me. Through me completely out of it it was I wasn't able to come to the film really with. A kind of the I at that point.
Jared Leto was on a retreat and missed the coronavirus news
"Jared Leto who you may know from not five seconds of summer. Thirty seconds to Mars Thirty seconds to Mars and also the movie he was the joker before the good guy did the joker So he was on like a meditation retreat for twelve days. And they didn't tell them about it because he's meditating and so he only found out about it because he walked out into a very different world.
"Going to be a podcast her everyone laughed at me well no one's laughing now and Stewart and this is the host who always has negative thoughts Jacob joker a movie that I could not believe have the height around it that it did I can't recall the last time a superhero film was Ben so polarizing I mean people worried about shootings in theaters people saying Joaquin deserves an Oscar yeah it was all over the place coming out of Toronto Oh this is going to be the film of the year it's going to get all the Oscars and then Todd Phillips director opens his mouth and got a lot of backlash for what he thought we're comedy was these days yet all the place with this film that said I got to say this one took me by surprise I assumed that DC was in free fall. I mean we have all commented on how their output has been inconsistent can we all agree at best putting it nicely right that they have not had the scene unless nece that the Marvel Universe has been able to bestow on all of their works when I heard they were doing a one off joker movie I was like that sounds like a bad idea story are you getting those marvel paycheck saying they're in free fall I mean wonder woman made one of a billion dollars off man made a billion dollars what kind of free was that will somebody say well I don't care what the hardcore people think the truth of the matter is a lot of their movies have stone DOC and they've not consistent the fact that we have a one of joker movie this joker that we're told will never appear with Batman what the hell are they doing marvel would never do that is what I guess I would say sure but I don't mind that like what is the best spider man film Spiderman entered the spider verse like that is not connection to the m. c. you or what Sony is doing with Tom Allen's spider manoeuvres etta any of that so I don't mind a one off if you can just pull off a good movie I don't care if it's in any kind of continuity villain standalone movies making a Superhero movie without a superhero has not been something I've thought has worked before I mean Holly Aries cat-woman Tom Hardy thinom they could never figure out how to do sinister of six I mean you could even probably throw the Star Wars prequels into that concept having the super villain story told without a counterpoint of heroism where's our entry point who are we supposed to be with and what are they going to accomplish the you mentioned marvel I think that DC here is taking a cue from Marvel's newest acquisition Fox Todd Phillips talked about how it took a lot of convincing at Warner Brothers to let him do an R. rated joker movie but that was the only thing he was pitching and he's literally hearing responses from Warner brothers like we sell joker pajamas at target what are you going to do to our character that might hurt Pyjama sales and look at the roads that deadpool paved and I think even more specifically logan going more dramatic and being R. rated you can't beat marveled by playing Marvin those game the way you beat marvelous by making your own Fox did that and nobody is even see new mutants because nobody knows what to do with it again the X. Men horror movie yeah they've experimented sometimes those experiments have been successful I'm just saying approaching this project hearing the we're going to do a one off film about the region of joker seemed like a waste of time I was not excited about this movie at all until I saw the trailer Yeah Al admit I mean after seeing what happened to jared Leto in jokers role in suicide squad. We'll see at that movie he doesn't think he was in that movie enough he's got a scene it was not overly excited to see what they would do with joker now what I will say is somewhere at this very moment jared Leto has pissed Yeah Joaquin Phoenix get attached this because that's what I would have gotten excited you know he's one of those actors like Tom Hardy who's like a Nicholas cage who is just going to make some decisions and go with them they could be czar. They could be captivating like that trailer yeah they really tapped into Martin Scorsese in that taxi driver field but I was even more excited about Joaquin Phoenix playing this role and should be pointed out he is the man that would be doctor strange he has quartered comic book movies before and walked away saying this is not really for me why do this one he was also offered the role of Bruce Banner the reason he didn't do them he didn't WanNa sign multi picture contracts he didn't want to do what Chris Evans and Robert Downey junior did where the next seven years of your life you're working basically as a day player for marvel here it's a one picture deal and the ways they got him on board for this one it was Todd Phillips again Joaquin was connected from the very beginning and the Pitch Phillips gave him is we're going to make a real movie but we're going to get warner brothers to fifty million dollars for it by calling it fucking joker yeah how did Todd Phillips and doing this because I've seen a lot of his films old cool that hangover trilogy these are not things that I associate with a Gritty New York Scorsese style film you saying that and coach when I look at this filmography I hadn't seen most of what he meant. Yeah they're bad comedies well he makes kind of comedy I don't patronize the I'm not ever interested in watching skin hutch that's just not something I'm going to see I did see war dogs which I actually thought it was a little underrated I thought it was pretty good it's okay yeah kind of fell apart at the end yeah thought it was decent as well and it was four dogs that actually got this happening as he was at an early screening of war dogs with Warner brothers and realize is is exact phrase was war dogs wasn't going to set the world on fire as so he started talking to Warner about what could we make that's going to really get attention and do a little bit more be a little more provocative look way down on his resume his first film and you might actually see why he really got the Gig I was doc I didn't realize I had always heard about this documentary about the punk icon singer G- yeah I did not know top Phillips did that I have seen it ooh those are some live performances you wanna be careful with he strips down throws a species tough stuff to watch yeah I watched the movie I was like Oh I've always wanted to see it this gives me an lent reason it may be the closest of all his films to joker it begins with an actual endorsement from John Wayne Gay see another killer clown so yeah brutal I don't know that I'm telling people I recommend that experience be prepared I don't say this lightly it is very punishing it is very hard set is provocative and ways a lot of people probably want appreciate but you can't see a director who's very much trying to confront a freak entertainer and I do think at a core G G Allen and joker are two sides of the same coin so I would be interested to see a guy that came from punk rock bring a punk rock aesthetic to of joker movie if we must Gotcha Joker Origin Story. I WanNa say though I'm hesitant because I mean I always liked the way Keith Ledger played it how did I get my scars there's a danger and telling US definitively how joker came to exist right. There's something about the mystery we want to leave I've always liked the mystery the funny thing and you can go back to books and Nachos where in our talks about the killing joke written by Alan Moore the joker says I always change my story but here's the version I'm going to tell of my own gin and they tell an origin story and then just as origin story we're just GonNa make that the real thing but yeah I've always preferred him to be like Batman rewritten so obsessed with origin Martha Thomas Wayne Getting Killed and the pearls and walking out Zora all of that that has been told so many times joker being the opposite of Batman I liked that you just this mysterious chaotic clown figure that comes out of nowhere yeah I've definitely was thinking the killing joke when watching this and how it took elements of that in that Comic Book Joker was a failed stand up comedian who was kind of down on his luck in a rundown older Gotham city but I came in I think we might be seeing virtually and adaptation of the killing joke minus all the Batman stuff no they definitely go in a different direction with this but it gave them a good starting point and joker said he likes his origin story to be multiple choice. DC is having both ways they're gonNa make their continuity multiple choice switch movies do you want and continuity go ahead that's weird for me that we're seeing something that I should not think of as a comic book movies essentially what they're telling me don't worry I'll have nothing to do with Zam Aquaman wonder woman and all of that I mean did they even have that DC logo they have that old school Warner Brothers logo show up no DC logo okay and yet I mean it's not just your average comic book movies this movie's doing bigger than a lot of films I mean it's opening bigger than the average thor film it's maybe not topped here it's not spiderman but I'm not really it's no atman though it's beaten that man right yeah this is going to have a ninety million joining in the US. The biggest October release of all time is it Halloween in the mood for something kind of scary after it we want another killer oh but it's shocking to me the box office for what essentially feels a little art film is so huge and that it's rated R. You can't get teenagers in which is where marvel makes its money is they are aiming specifically at thirteen to seventeen year old market with their PG thirteen films and yes adults can like it in younger kids can like it but they're keeping that content for a rated R. Film in an error where in my experience it's much harder for young people to get into a rated R. Film that it made this much money is shocking to me I expected it to do well I didn't expect it to break venoms record

"And you saw the joker their hippie. So fucking baller. They have the what is the there's the purple amber Gainey song, Rick Ross and skirl ex that video music video. Scroll IX Jared Leto joker are in a strip club. Rick ross. Yeah. It ends with them on a boat together. Just makes me think how pimp it'd be to hang out with the joker, dude. Yeah. That'd be cool. You just can't stop thinking about going to strip club and jokers in there in the corner throwing money. He's a big stack of money. He's burning while he's throwing strippers. Okay. But it's not like a strip club strip club. It's one of those cool ones. That's like have like classy, and like hipster because they oh, you know, instead of listening to rap music. They listen to the cure, and like the Smiths or whatever, and they lend Portland style like Portland. It's like cool to go to it. You know, it's like they don't play rap music. It's like for because they classy muse classy music like it's this. Yeah. One of those strip clubs where you're not going to there's no Tim's allowed. Yeah. Yeah. They have a policy on backwards hats. Yeah. You walk in the no baggage, gene. That's so one of those bugged up things I was like we had drinks last night at one of those like a place like that where it's like a strip club. That's not like, it's like socially. Okay, go there. And it was like joker. Yeah. Me and the joker were there. And it's like, you know, it's a respectable one. Where it's it's not like fully, nude or whatever. Yeah. But yeah, I was thinking in there. I'm like the only difference between this and the regular strip clubs day is like listen to white people Isic, right? That's all it is dancing to like taking back Sunday or fucking whatever. That sounds. Lame super lame. Sounds bad. Yeah. One of the one of those strip clubs where it's less about swag and more about cloudy. Remember there was a phase where people are into going to burlesque clubs. Oh, right. That was another things yet burlesque is it's like stripping except they're ugly. That's like that's the whole thing about burlesque is like, yeah. What if what if strippers were ugly? Yeah. What if strippers were like ugly, and they had bangs and you didn't see anything. Well, that was a little phase that was like a. There was a period of time for like two years where you would have one friend that would try to convince you that you should go to burlesque club with them because it's actually really dope. Let's go. Let's go see burlesque into get soft. Yeah. No, dude is fucking awesome. It's like it's not like a strip club. You know? 'cause instead of you know, like, they they danced to INTERPOL like this one girl dance to INTERPOL song and another one does like a modest mouse routine show, and it super cool, and yeah, you should come nude. It's fucking dope. Anyway, I've given them thousands of dollars of all my. Spent all my money there. You don't even they. Oh, don't they put the like tassels on red? Yeah. The pasties. I don't want to like, we're anti strippers. We're pro. I'm literally pro real strip clubs died. I think that's apparent with. What I've what I've. Yeah. It's weird Bieber. That there exist alternative that's like, oh, this is a better not classy version. Yeah. Because we're not playing songs I wanna see an entire of Jonah. I want to want to hear rap music and see one remembered something really funny this. Okay. So last night. I was reminded. I've mentioned working on that judge Mathis show, and Gary, Indiana, which was one of the experience of my life. I wear a bulletproof vest every he'd never came never came out. We were like risk our lives like going up to gang members. Like, hey, you wanna snitch on a murder to judge Mathis? But the man who is only handled small-claims for year. Yeah. All of a sudden putting to very real crime. But the most of the time we I mean, we shot this in the winter, and Gary, Indiana, it's basically Chicago but much more dangerous. But I remember to guy this cop because we had a few cops working on the show when like in the show, helping them investigate and when Sir Jack Wagner, well, this one that I befriended in a weird way. His name was a lotto..

"And welcome back. It is Frankie Boyer. And we're talking in the middle of a conversation today on biz talk radio with Ned Gorman and Kevin Hamilton. Have written a book it's called lookout America. The secret Hollywood studio at the heart of the Cold War. This is so it's a fascinating story because up in the Hollywood hills. There's this studio it's called lookout mountain lab. And it's it operated from nineteen forty seven. You said knit to about one thousand nine hundred sixty nine. That's right. And it's stored volumes of Cold War, imagery, and it served as a regular meeting. Spot for Tomic, scientists military brass in Hollywood professionals. It employed. Hundreds. Of Hollywood studio veterans and could summon anybody in their brother to come to this facility. It's so fascinating. And it's where all of the documentaries that we would see about the war and the Cold War were probably put together knit. That's right. That's right. Especially. You know, anything having to do with nuclear weapons are nuclear weapons testing as well as missiles. And then what's really fascinating is that when we get into the nineteen sixties and the Vietnam war really takes off its lookout mountain that is rigging. US air force planes with all kinds of camera equipment, so that we can get all kinds of aerial footage of the Vietnam war. So if any of your listeners, so the Ken burns documentary that was out last year the year before in the Vietnam war so much of the footage in that documentary was shot by the cameras of the studio. Wow. What's the website, by the way? I forgot to ask you b break. Thank you. Yeah. Lookout, America dot org. Lookout, America dot org. So the there was also an Oscar. To tell us about that. Yeah. In the early nineteen sixties lookout mountain made a short documentary about the Thunderbirds. It was you know, the Thunderbirds were these acrobatic fighter jets that the air force would feature in various airshows across the country, but also across the globe. And and they made a short film, featuring the Thunderbirds in flight, and because of its technical qualities that got nominated for an Oscar award. They didn't win. It was nominated. And so all that stock footage that we saw it's all it all came from lookout mountain. And and for those of you that missed the first segment lookout mountain is now a residence owned by musician and actor Jared Leto. She is. So fascinating. It is fascinating. I mean. I just can't even imagine this kind of space in the Hollywood hills to be honest with you. You know, the air force pick the place initially because it was a radar station in World War Two, and they just need it someplace to work, and this is in the late nineteen forties. And as I got underway there. They just had more and more work to do. And they had to keep on expanding and expanding and expanding it eventually reached forty thousand square feet. That's a lot of blocks. It is very real estate. Yeah. And made a lot of neighbors actually, very upset. So there's sure pretty pretty pretty funny. L A time stories in the nineteen fifties about neighbors who are upset about all the construction in their neighborhood there. Do you know what Jared paid for it? I'm just curious. I do not. I mean, I'm sure we can look that up. And at one time I did. But I don't know the top of my head. It has to be millions and millions of dollars has to be millions of dollars. What was the most fascinating piece of this that shocked you when you started to look at this look at America, you know, as a film watcher, myself, a Hollywood film watcher. I think really the most shocking part is is that, you know, the one of the most iconic scenes in the film is Dr Strangelove, you know, at the end there and with the with the with the nuclear detonation, and it turns out that's footage from the studio. And I think just recognizing realizing when we were first working on this project that really, you know, virtually every image. We have seen of a nuclear detonation or mushroom cloud was shot through the cameras of this place. That was just a total shock. You know, the whole thing is shocking for me. I mean, I just never knew this existed in my question is were there any other secret studios that you know, of as well as to look out. Not not like this one. No, this is entirely unique for Asian. None of the other branches of the military had an operation like this in Hollywood during World War Two the army air force at the time did set up a studio to produce what we might think of as propaganda films as well as training films for airmen, and that was called the first motion picture unit, and and that was closed down after World War Two lookout mountain laboratory in some ways is the air to that studio. So is it fair to say that there was the beginning of the cinemascope and super scope this cinematic techniques and technologies that were used in films that it really rejuvinated from there. It's not fair to say that they originated there. But it is certainly fair to say that the first testing of many of these technologies happened at this studio. And so the studio was actively working with Hollywood engineers on testing this kind of new new these new visual technologies and film, and and it was a it was a place where that could get done early on because there was so much freedom. And there was also a budget to t t not to try to explore the cutting cutting edge technologies, and so they were a big part of the development of these technologies, but they didn't themselves originate them. And they also had a active in highly skilled animation department that was staffed by the animators who worked on ten. Asia. Dumbo in other Disney features, and I don't know about you. But Fantasia I thought was one of the most sophisticated still to this day animated films. If you have not seen Fantasia, I have to tell you. It is absolutely. I'm so shocked. They haven't brought it back for its time or something. But it's really an extraordinary animation piece of animation. It is. It is amazing. And the fact that some of those very same animators from working in the studio is just really fascinating. And and in fact, if you know, the animations were produced in lookout mountain films are are themselves. Disney quality, they are just remarkable. Typically, they're portraying some sort of scientific process like what happens when a nuclear bomb is detonated. But they're just just really extraordinary animations. It was also fair to say that they did innovative camera mounts for for shooting certain scenes. Yeah. That's right. And so if you think about, you know, trying to film a Thunderbird in flight from the ground, that's actually really really hard to do. And or similarly a missile being launched up into the stratosphere that is really hard to do. And so this this studio had to develop these very sophisticated camera mounts in order to be able to track objects in flight at high speed, and they did a remarkable job. And NASA counted on lookout mountain for some technology for records of its launching launches for for years as well. Yeah. That's right. And so, you know, early on the space program was wrapped up with the missile program. They were pretty much of the same operation. And therefore look mountain was sent out to some of these missile launch sites and early space rocket launch sites, and they were asked to document every aspect of the operation, and it turns out that footage proved to be really valuable because when something went wrong when a missile didn't get off the ground. It was the footage the film footage that allowed the engineers to figure out typically what went wrong. Yeah. And renowned director. John Ford's most dramatic direct role within the unit was a supervisor and director on films that were produced by lookout mountain to the Pacific command in the films were produced for American military personnel and their families. It's so fascinating who knew. Do. I'm so glad you guys were able to explore lookout America in the new book the secret Hollywood studio at the end of the Cold War and give.
