tackle inflation Jeff Rosenberg is senior portfolio manager at BlackRock financial management This is good news but it's a little bit too much of good news And this is an economy and a labor market that's overheating The fed has to accelerate BlackRock's Jeff Rosenberg as for the pace of Federal Reserve rate increases Nadia lovell is senior equity strategist at UBS financial services We're looking for race to be front end loaded we're looking for 50 basis points in May as well as June and then a return to a 25 basis points cadence And so we think that the market can be able to weather that storm Nadia lovell of UBS as for the jobs report on the broader economic backdrop Michael Collins is senior portfolio manager at P Jim The economy is red hot the labor market is red hot But all of those things always occur right before a slowdown right You get a flat curve you've got a really low unemployment rate In fact that's actually one of the best leading indicators of future slowdowns is a really low unemployment rate You get really hot economies and we are there Michael Collins of P jum Oil had its biggest weekly loss in more than ten years after the Biden administration ordered an unprecedented release of U.S. strategic reserves to tame rampant prices This week West Texas intermediate crude oil was down $14 a barrel A late day rally S&P 500 Index finished with a gain of 15 by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm Charlie pellet This is Bloomberg Your listening to balance and power with David Westin on Bloomberg radio The biggest question facing the U.S. economy right now is the question whether we can have a so called soft landing that is raining inflation without tipping us over into a recession To answer this question I talked to Bill Dudley senior adviser to Bloomberg economics senior research scholar at the Princeton center for economic policy studies and former president of the Federal Reserve bank of New York Jared Powell cited three episodes where the fed tightened and we had a soft landing 1965 in 1984 and 1994 95 The comment is none of those episodes are really relevant to the current situation because in all those episodes the fed tightened but not enough to slow down the keep the unemployment rate from declining All three of those cases the unemployment rate kept falling And we can't afford to let the unemployment rate continue to fall in the current environment because all that would do is push inflation even higher So the chances of generating a soft landing it seems very remote because the economy if you start to push up the unemployment rate it's very hard to control that process There's a rule called the Somme rule which basically says every time the unemployment rate goes up by more than a half a percentage point the next stop is a full blown recession And a full blown recession is not a rise of a half a percent or 1% in the unemployment rate The smallest rise in the unemployment rate we've seen in the post World War II period is over two percentage points So I think it's going to be very difficult for the fed to pull this off You said it's theoretically possible It's going to be hard given history given what we've seen with past track record Is it within the power of the fed Can they be smarter or is this matter a mainly a matter of luck having certain other factors trigger for example a big infusion of labor into the workforce Well I think the problem is that they waited too long to begin the tightening process So they're just beginning to start to tighten at a time that inflation is way above their target and the unemployment rate is low at 3.8% And Paul has characterized the labor market as extremely tight In that situation if you're going to try to get inflation under control you're going to have to push up the unemployment rate And if you push up the unemployment rate it's almost impossible to avoid a recession at that point So they'll try to stretch this out as long as they can They'll try to push down inflation without pushing up the unemployment rate very much But I think at the end of the day it's going to be very difficult for them to pull this off This tree is not kind in this situation Bill as you just said in your opinion and a lot of other people as well the fed just waited too long I wonder how much of that was because of that famous framework that was unveiled at Jack's own Does J Powell need to admit that the framework was a mistake before they can make progress here because you've seen him being asked this question several times and every time he refuses to admit the framework was a mistake Well I don't think the framework was a mistake in the sense that they changed their inflation objective 2% inflation on average The problem is how they operationalize that If every recall what the fed basically said is we're not going to raise short term interest rates until we see 2% inflation we're confident that inflation is going to be above 2% for some time in the future And we've also reached full employment So that's the.

"For member station wbz Susie on reports Martha rodeo waved goodbye this morning to her third grader in kindergartener before walking her pre-K daughter lilac to her class at McAuliffe elementary on Chicago's northwest side They're excited to go back to school So let me guess I miss my teachers A teacher sprays sanitizer on lyla's hands just before she enters her classroom Rodeos says she feels confident in sending her daughters back to school now because her family took the proper precautions I know my kids are negative They're vaccinated So those are two things that and then teachers agreed to come back Like most families here they've been battered by COVID twists and turns all this year that includes individual classrooms going remote because of a COVID exposure she says the past week was tough for a lot of families working parents had to scramble for child care and figure out ways to keep kids engaged She doesn't blame the teachers for that She thinks teachers were making reasonable requests following winter break like supporting stronger COVID testing and embracing metrics for when schools and the district flipped back to remote learning CPS should definitely help out their teachers At the end they're the ones in the front line and they should have a saying Not all students return to in class learning today Some classrooms remain dark because of high COVID cases and some parents decided to still keep their kids at home like laquita Simmons whose 7th grade daughter chastity is vaccinated but she isn't sending her back to school quite yet We are both as medic So I just can't take the chance of us contracting it because I don't know how we will react to it Simmons doesn't understand why school officials and mayor Lori Lightfoot were adamant in their opposition to temporary remote learning She notes that some of the teachers at chastity school are still at home Some of them have an even retired because they're sick or their children are sick And their home taking care of their own children Her plan now is to send chastity back to school next week after she gets a negative COVID test However I'm still not okay with that decision but I'm not gonna interfere with her learning because I know at this time they're not gonna allow her to do remote High school student journey member says he doesn't think classes should have been canceled at all and he's happy to be back While concerned about the latest surge he thinks it's manageable He's always having consistency in wearing masks And testing for who has COVID was not I think we can have control over this Journey's mother's orlina Smith member says she won't take sides between the district and the teachers union but she's among many here who are frustrated by the stalemate that lasted a week and says this all could have been handled much better If we do go to remote learning or shutdown again or pause or stop that they figure out a way that the children can still get some type of education and not block out the teachers She says her son's grades took a hit during virtual learning but as she looks ahead over the next several months of the school year she's focusing on the need for consistency and says she simply doesn't want the learning to stop again For NPR news I'm Susan Yelp and ma was collecting cans in east Harlem This pass spring when someone approached from behind struck him and then while he lay on the ground kicked him in the head Another man Jared Powell was arrested and charged with attempted murder and two hate crime assault charges Ma spent more than 8 months in the hospital he died this past New Year's Eve He was 61 And the New York police department is now investigating his death as a homicide Is a spokesperson for ma's family He joins us now Mister Chan welcome to all things considered Thank you Before we get to his death would you tell us just a little bit about Yao pen Maz life how he ended up in New York collecting cans that night Mister mall was a dim sum pastry chef in China in the khoisan sexual region of China which is located in Guangdong province He and his wife immigrated to the United States in October of 2018 In 2019 he worked as a kitchen helper slash cook but the place was went out of business when the city went into lockdown in March of 2020 The business that were reopened so he had to resort to collect the cans along with his wife his wife also lost work at the time I mentioned that among the charges that prosecutors have brought are hate crimes charges For which they need to show the victim was targeted because of his race I know police have said they've got surveillance camera footage suggesting that man has attacker had not interacted before the assault has led them to believe he may have been targeted because of his race I wonder if you can speak to just how what happened to mister maw fits in among other crimes that have been documented against Asian Americans in New York City Sure to police during the course of the investigation has some evidence that maybe not be disclosed yet let them at the hate crime charge but mister ma I have no interaction with the mister Powell and he was just minding his own business He never even saw a power come up behind him mister Maya was attacked from behind He was shoved up around and then repeatedly stopped against the sky look Remind us of the background here It hate crimes against Asian Americans have been way up during the pandemic Hate crimes against Asians against Chinese There's nothing new to me I'm in my mid 60s in grew up in New York City on a low east side here in the 60 70s that has always been resentment and bias against the Chinese in this country But like I said people did not reporting them at that time for instance I've walked down the street before and so many companies make it derogatory market And I was just shrug it off or if they pursued it We would have an argument We would go our separate ways I would not think about going into the priest in the reported But now in light of this big increase and also because of the media coverage of some of these horrific attacks people are reporting So we're getting a more accurate picture of how many eyes incidents against Asians are in the city and in the country You're a long time activist and advocate for Chinese immigrants in New York What has the reaction been to what happened to mister maw Well of course you have the empathy you have the outrage but at the end of the day none of that brings it back What we can hope for is something positive to come out of this As a result of any tragedy you're trying to make something good come out of it I mean nothing we can do forever bring them back That is Carlin Chan spokesperson for the family of the late yelpin ma Thank you very much mister chairman Thank you.

"Of management information systems program from the J Whitney bunting college of business Ed, Georgia college now Jared, so you start earning your masters in business at Georgia college, and they're in the middle of the program. It switches from classroom study to an online program. Let's talk about that transition of going from face to face to online. Learning was that jarring at all for me? It was a little different because I feel like I learn better in a classroom setting and just having the interaction the physical interaction which I think a lot of people would agree with. But it was interesting to transition because we had a couple of classes that would meet one week face to face and in one week online. So it was kind of testing the waters, and got used to it because we had to post in forums that sort of thing to really communicate with the class. But once we went fully online, it was just like jumping in the deep end and you just kind of had to run with it, but it was fun because it was something totally new. Got to play with all kinds of newer technology for like labs. And that sort of thing to really get interactive in the classroom. Can you talk about some ways that you had dappled to that new format of online learning? Oh, sure I like I'm better at vocalizing myself face to face, or just like having a conversation with someone. And I really had to teach myself how to take that and type it into a small blank, and really explain concepts or things that we were talking about in the classroom, and then have to comment on other people's thoughts and posts in our online discussion panels, so that was unique because for me, I'm like, okay, I only have one or two things to say if I type it, but if I'm talking, I could talk all day. Do you think that made you a stronger communicator, I believe? So I think it helped me to be more direct and to just also be able to, I guess, give constructive criticism to Mark classmates. And not be I guess, to direct. So you were talking a little bit about the differences between online and classroom learning you kind of expand on that a little bit any other differences that you noticed, well, we just had to learn how to be in online classroom where we would meet in those WebEx, was the program we use, and that's like a online classroom where you can come in, and you can see the video and audio feed from your professor, so you actually get to see them. It's not like you're just staring into the void and listening to someone ramble on. But you so that was interesting because you'd see your classmates. Sometimes somebody wouldn't eat the Mike and they may be eating a little like dinner or something so that those are the some of the growing pains, we had to learn through in the process. But other than that, it was, it was pretty fun and pretty smooth transition. I don't know if any other of my classmates had any issues, I've never really heard anybody complain about it. So, so we're some of the biggest misconceptions of online learning, maybe some that you had. Had that were dispelled once you started experiencing it. I think some of the main ones are it will if it's online, I'm going to be isolated or if it's online. I'm going to not really be able to have a relationship with my professor and really get to know this person. And I don't think was necessarily true and in my case. And in the case of my fellow students in the program. We had plenty of opportunities to talk to our professors into he invited he and she invited us to meet with them in their office. If we wanted to come to campus to, to meet up with them, which lucky for me, I worked on campus, so I could just stares, but they had a open door policy, even online space, anytime you want to call anytime you wanna come by, like they were willing to do that. And that really made it special because I like that aspect about Jordan college in my undergrad and it felt like you just cared right? On over into the masters program of open door policy. Please come by and chat. And I think also have in relationship with students like. Being able to connect with your peers to study to, to grow and to learn, and maybe even collaborate on projects. Together, we were required. We had many a project where we would have to do those sort of things, so they almost reinforced it a little bit, too. So you don't feel so isolated and it's not just a solo gig. Folks are listening to lens on business presented by the j Whitney bunting college of business at Georgia college. Georgia's public liberal arts university, I'm guest host, John Waterhouse, and this week, we're chatting with Jared Powell and all mine graduate of the masters of management information systems program from the j Whitney bunting college of business at Georgia college. Now, Jared, you're talking about communicating with fellow students in that comradery in what ways there in the online program, where you able to communicate outside of traditional Email. What ways did you all get creative as far as collaborating during studies? Well we definitely had to use Skype sessions or or also use WebEx sessions. They opened up lobbyists for us. So we could have those interactions with students if we wanted to inner space like that whether lobbies a lobby is just essentially a room online, where you can log in basically use the same setting that you would use for the classroom, but use it for collaborate. With students and the professor may or may not be there. We had breakout sessions in the classroom to where the professor would open up multiple lobbies, and we'd be able to chat together. Same way you a chat, pretty much like Skype or video conferencing, FaceTime, whatever you're familiar with, and we had to like use that a good many times, because some of our classmates weren't in the same city as us or maybe not even in the same state. So that's pretty interesting to kind of experience that and have to work around not being able to meet up face to face all the time with our fellow classmates. So you never ever really felt your own an island. I never did. No. I, I mean, I'm pretty social butterfly, but a lot of my classmates there's a few there that were maybe a little bit more introverted, and even then we had, I would just engage with them and make sure they, hey, we're here, and I think that would be the encouragement, I would say to anyone other who's maybe hesitant about getting into the masters program or online program, just give it a shot and put.

"Collins is in the house. She's are investing team leader here at Bloomberg news covers. Some really important people. He's been a great team. I do have a fantastic team. Well, and they're responsible for almost always the most read stories on the Bloomberg writing about the biggest names in money and few bigger than Jeff gun Mark who had his just markets webcast earlier this week. It's must watch must listen. You guys were blogging on it. There was an M Y. Right. A live blog. We went out of our comfort zone this week. And of course, as the team is so stellar. They did a great job. But yeah, he Jeffrey gun lock is one of the story bond managers of all time super successful. But he doesn't webcast each year in January where he doesn't talk about his specific funds. The double line total return fund, for example, he talks about markets, and essentially walks investors through what he's seeing an expecting in stocks bonds, commodities, you name it or his calls, usually good. So my colleague John Gittleson did a fantastic story ahead of the webcast last week where he looked at his calls from two thousand eighteen and essentially he got he nailed most of them. He really did. I gotta give him credit. Yeah. It's called. And so what jumped out at you as you were sort of synthesizing all of it. What are the one or two things that really were the kind of must takeaways? Well, one of the things having listened to it myself was that he spent a lot of time on the US national debt lot of concern there in terms of. Sounding the alarm bells where he really feels like this is going to come back to bite us both the markets. Investors the country's. So he really said it's something investors are not paying enough attention to he also talked about the government shutdown is weighing on markets as well. But you're Ajay pal is also talked about his concerns about right? The rising American debt to. That's right. Did point to chairman of fed chairman Jared Powell as well in terms of seeing his capitulation last week in terms of a good for the markets. But he was he went from pragmatic Powell Gunnlaug said to a Powell put and the markets have been throwing a party since then. Yeah. It was really restraint out there. So he also reiterated that he sees Europe as a value trap. So his position hasn't changed. They're a value trap. Exactly. He was more positive on for twenty nine thousand nine than he was last year. I felt like a lot of people are starting to talk the emerging markets. Big time. Yes, we are hearing in a number of places. Sometimes that concerns me I do too big piling in. Yes. Having been in in in the investing space for a while. I don't know. I know you Jason you came out of the investing team home. Did I did it was it was a nice safe home? We were just talking about my adventures back in the day with Cathy Burton are Notre hedge fund, which I think there's a book fair, and maybe even a Netflix series. But we'll talk about that later. I might need a little editing too. Well, definitely Netflixing not broadcast. So nothing untoward nothing untoward. Just some really good stories when anybody says that of course, there's stuff. So the other headline I wanted to ask you about BlackRock elevating a guy who has really taken on a higher and higher profile. Everybody knows Larry Fink, but a notable promotion at BlackRock. That's right. Mark Wedeman was promoted this week, and he's essentially taking over some more role internationally in terms of black rocks expansion internationally and also corporate strategy in general. So there have been a handful of executives in play as or in terms of people have talking about whether or not who would succeed. Larry think his name is definitely being in place. We didn't come out of nowhere. But certainly this week the added role that he's taking on its newly created role had a lot of people thinking, hey, could he be the successor lot a number of investors that we talk to an anti master. Who wrote the story on our team talked to said could it's definitely giving him more power. But it's not a sure thing that he's definitely the successor. Because there are a lot of other. People who are running big units and black still and are still in the game such a massively influential I feel like whenever they make a move one way or the other people stand up and take notice both in terms of where they're putting their money. But also, even how they're running their company and a lot of ways, and this is a company that runs six point four trillion dollars in assets, the world's biggest asset manager. So where are they going who runs? It is really important to a lot of people's portfolios into it all started in a corner of Blackstone office back in the day. Yeah. It's become Pegues. Always good to catch up. The Peggy Collins investing team leader for around her neck. I know it's called. That's a it's cold in here. It's called everywhere. It is my mom. Can I gotta give her a shot? Was mom Texans. Earlier is like leaving my coat on. Texas just like golden here. Chilly. All right. Thanks have a great weekend. Hope you get to do some yoga with Carol keeping our fingers crossed. All.
