"For a cause like that We raised over a quarter of a $1 billion for saint Jude children's research hospital and still make progress for tomorrow in space Because we have no idea what we could learn out there by satisfying our curiosity to explore the stars and just like as we climb the mountains across the oceans And what we could learn in space could change or alter humankind's life and destiny here on earth for the better So we have to be able to do both And that's why saint Jude was such a big part of our mission We were honored they unveiled the inspiration for advanced research center and they're going to raise the survival rates of childhood cancer across the world from that center Meantime I have to ask you about this Russia anti satellite weapons test creating 1500 pieces of debris and danger in astronauts on the ISS What's your take on this What does this tell you about the hazards of space travel Yeah I don't understand it at all honestly It's not hard to shoot down a satellite Satellites orbital mechanics would say that anything that's in orbit right now is essentially unreal retracts It's very predictable I do not think that Russia or China or even the U.S. for that matter has to shoot one down for people to know they can't So I really don't know what was accomplished here other than not just endangering human beings at the space station But it destroys satellites The debris will take out weather observation satellites things that can predict storms here on earth that could save lives as well So I don't see the good out of it And if there is a lot of kinetic activity in space I mean in satellite starting getting blown up it's going to really destroy low earth orbit and our ability to go and explore among the stars And that's unfortunate All right and people going up like yourself Jared Isaac's been ships for payment CEO always good to have you with us Thank you for stopping by Meantime the head of General Electric aviation open acquisitions that can make the jet engine maker bring the jet engine maker new capabilities GE said last week the company would be splitting in two three with aviation being one of the stand-alone companies The aviation CEO John slattery says electrification technologies is one area where deals could boost the company's portfolio Coming up a mid pandemic picture of Silicon Valley our tech startups overvalued We're going to talk about that and more with a crew capital founding partner Lauren Kalani next This is Bloomberg When was the moment you discovered that you were meant for the business world Have you been getting a lot of inquiries from employers And then you started looking for the best sources of information Technology is challenging the regulators Doctors use kind of a virtual reality look I feel like the world is courting Elon Musk Which is how you got here.

"I i'm neil. The host of good news podcast. This is your source for good news fun stories and sonic showing all of this. Goodness is coming to you from beautiful chicago illinois. I think the human drive to go to space is always inspirational and therefore good news. The most recent humans to return from space where on the inspiration for mission in this one is particularly interesting to me because they were essentially four jim oaks. This mission was comprised entirely of civilians and yes arguments could be made. The previous astronauts were technically civilians but the four people in the inspiration for captial were true. Blue civilians this mission was put on by space. X elon musk's space company. That has been doing a ton of commercial space exploration and this crew was in a crew dragon capsule which we've talked about on the good news podcast before because it is totally automated which is crazy to me so this crew flew up orbited the earth for three days and then splashed down this past weekend. This entire mission was paid for by a tech entrepreneur. Jared isaac men who wanted to go to space and raise money for saint jude's one of the other members of the civilian crew. Haley arnaud also works at saint jude's and is a former patient and childhood cancer survivor herself. So jared isaac men paid for the entire mission and donated one hundred million dollars to saint jude's during the mission. There was a fundraiser where the public raised sixty one million dollars and then right after splashdown elon. Musk donated fifty million dollars putting the grand total to over two hundred million dollars donated to saint jude's for children's cancer research very exciting stuff and i think listeners. That means that soon enough pretty much. Everyone's going to be able to afford a ticket to space. So start saving your pennies and one interesting piece of trivia about all of this is whether or not anyone who went on. This trip is actually technically considered an astronaut. They all went to space. So that's super cool and having the title is just icing on the cake but the faa created the commercial astronaut wings program in two thousand four and the rule. State that anyone who's going to get wings needs to be a crew member which means they demonstrated activities during the flight that were central to public safety or contributed to human spaceflight safety so because the crew dragon. Capsule was automated. Were the people in their astronauts. Something for you to consider as you lay your head down on your pillow this evening. If you have an opinion one way or the other tweeted at me. I'd love to know. That is the good news i have for you.

"Fundraising chief on space missions pushing boundaries and a record-setting year by belinda. Luscomb saint jude children's research hospital which looks after children with cancer. While also researching how to eliminate the pediatric form of the disease raised two billion dollars in donations in its last fiscal year. It's a record for an independent charity and an impressive feat in a year when donors had more causes than ever vying for their attention and money. Richard shattuck the president and ceo of the american lebanese syrian associated charities saint jude's fundraising organization attributes that success to a nimble pivot to different fundraising strategies. One of which was a collaboration with inspiration for the first orbital space mission crewed entirely by civilian astronauts that partnership brought in not only one hundred million dollars promised by jared isaac men the billionaire commander of the flight but a further sixteen million dollars through such initiatives as a sweepstakes to win a chance at joining isaac men as part of his crew time recently spoke with shoddy aca about the stratospheric challenges of the mission to raise money. The following is lightly edited for length and clarity time. Are there some ways in which solving the puzzle of childhood cancer is a little bit like sending civilian astronaut to space shatti. Ac saint jude has always been about pushing boundaries and taking what seems like impossible and making it possible. Our founder comedian. Danny thomas determined that he was going to tackle. An incurable disease called leukemia. It had a survival rate of four percent and it was the most common form of childhood cancer fast forward almost sixty years and the survival rate is now ninety four percent. It seems impossible that four civilians could go into space under the earth right. And that's exactly what's going to happen now. The goal is tackling global cancer the survival rates in low and middle income countries or twenty percent or less. So that's the current problem that we're trying to solve which i think is akin to four civilians being shot into space time studios is producing a documentary series on the inspiration for mission. One way that you could raise the funds you'll need people might suggest would be using the money that these billionaires are spending ongoing space. What would you say to those people. I would say that. It's a both and jared isaac. Men is made a one hundred million dollar commitment to us. So i would say that. Jared is helping to solve this multi trillion multi-year problem that global cancer is for us. It's both revenue strategy and an awareness strategy. It has allowed us to get in front of different audiences. We know that many of the people who participated in this drawing tended to be on the younger side so it brought some of those people who may not have gravitated toward our mission in april twenty twenty. You said that like nearly every nonprofit you were being profoundly affected by lost financial support but then twenty twenty one was a record year..

It's not a cliffhanger. Serialized show like every other marvel series. Which i like. I like that aspect. I think it's great. I think every everyone has been. I mean. they've they've also varied intone like the first couple were fund and then they got a little dark so i'm curious to see where they're going to go with each one. I mean i just love seeing chadwick hearing chadwick again and that was one of my favorite episodes the black panther ravitch or one of the best one so far and even the last episode which was more zombies or there was one that came out last night but when washed it yet. The mom was a serious debts everywhere but he's still is funny but really light funny. Which tells you this is not. This is not canonical. This is just like watching a cartoon. Animations fantastic i think whatever they're doing with the nation there they had money to put it in there for sure by half an hour's too short for some of these stories it goes away quickly. It feels like they expect you to know the characters in life. It's like oh this characters here. All that character is there A lot of inside jokes from sue fans. But you'll get a lot of character development which is why like the the black panther felt like there was good character development for him. Yeah my favorite too. Yeah all right Again the one more before the big apple event quote unquote big apple events Tonight we have the launch of inspiration for this is the private spaceflight booked via spacex. "Memories challenger and being home with pistol mcauliffe and what that means to me her legacy as being the first teacher in space to me being now this educated going to space to one of the civilian astronauts i dunno of spacex wanted to evoke the challenger memory. Because it's kind of unspoken at this point it's high pressure but high reward to how that i think dr scien- proctor. She's going to be the pilot. So i guess they showed her out a flight. In the event something goes wrong. I don't know because i'm assuming this is kind of like. When ilan went up were basis went up it was. You just sat there in the you know. The rocket went up and came back down in. Its own right here along. Lake the luggage and so i'm assuming that's what this is like But is there any steering involved. You have to worry about you. Know a rocket thruster somewhere to get you into a different orbit basically. What the bob's did right over the same thing. Same outfit same same rocket. Yeah but at one point they had to maneuver to in to connect to the international space station so it did take some pilot. Piloting of the falcon nine rocket. These folks are jailed orbiting the three days of orbits and then they come back down and they splashdown yes not crash land. They splashed down in the atlantic somewhere off our coast but they always aim for the atlantic but then they end up moving into the gulf because the atlantic slave to chop or the way to bigger too rough could be um los mantis accomplishment though with four civilians because then all of a sudden it opens the door. The on the pressure's off we've done it. Four civilians up there now. It's open for space travel for everybody. Get out your checkbooks kids and the girl. That's the physician's assistant e-right twenty nine year old holly arsenal. Yes she is. The youngest american ever to fly into space. She was the girl. I guess that was the connection. Why i guess the funding for this thing's going things go to saint jude's she is a a worker there but was a patient as a kid quite a story She survived her battle with cancer. Now she's a physicians assistant at the saint jude's children's research hospital. They raised so far over. Two hundred million dollars for that. How did they really so amazing. Play and it's in. That was the whole point. The guy the guy that bought it all. I can't think of his name. Jared eisenman. that's him He he was the one who said two of the people were picked by making a donation to the saint shoots hosp if you made a donation you were put into some kind of drawing. And so that's how they pick to the people and then he picked holly arsenal. He said i want her to come with us. So that's the long term goal. This moneymaker right. They want more. Jared isaac men's of the world opened up the checkbook. Have your own trip. You know like some palm beach billionaires gonna take you up in the next one..

"To the house and hide their true feelings. Yeah. Oh, um, I know you like that stuff, but I just Well, now, wait. I didn't say that. I like that stuff. I mean, I admit that I get a little My attention level can wane a bit when it gets to the personnel, character stories. But boy when they're doing their space thing and going to the moon, they're flying people back and forth to the moon like it's a shuttle. You know, I mean, it's pretty convincing. Yeah, Yeah, well, anyway, uh, so good choice. Good choice. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much. Trying to remember what my next choice is. I don't know. Um, so because that's the way I am now because your parents used to say things like, please make better choices done. But today you made a good choice. Did you So did? Uh, because it was all of us, John. John, You're just not living up to your potential. Okay, God, that again. All right. Now wait a minute. So wrong with the back of the classroom. Okay, But speaking of people that live up to their potential and beyond, how about that Jared Isaac men and inspiration for a Tell me So inspiration for is a, uh, the mission that should have gotten all the attention that the Bezos you know, up and down Pop, gunshot and Virgin Galactic got not that those were significant. You know, those are two sub orbital flights for tourist economies, primarily And it's cool. You know, these are billionaires living their dreams and building rockets and flying other rich people around. But this is an orbital mission. So Jared Isaac Hman, who started the company years ago, called Shift for payment, which I had never heard of before I read about him made billions of dollars on it. And said, You know, he was an avid aviation enthusiasts. They said, You know, I want to fly into space. So instead of building a rocket, he just went to SpaceX and said how much to buy a flight. They said. It's about $55 million. They said. Okay, I want to buy a flight to charity for ST Jude's Hospital. So he did that. And he, uh, then had three crew positions left to fit because you can easily fit for people in the crew Dragon capsule, which is what they used to send people back and forth the space station. So one of them is a woman that was selected from the staff of ST Jude's. Named Haley Arsenal. And she's a bone cancer survivors shall be the first Person to fly into space with the prospect of prosthesis in curb her. Her leg. Um Then they had a contest. Couple of contests. So Chris some brow ski who's a data engineer at Lockheed Martin. Got one seat and the fundraising contest. And then they actually ran a contest during the Super Bowl with a commercial saying, Hey, you want to go to space? Sign up. So a woman named Science tractor but actually worked with a number of times. Uh, and who had gotten pretty close to becoming an ass Asked not didn't make the final cut years ago was selected for that. So Jared, the commander. It says money he gets to be. The commander is 38 Sands, 51. She's the co pilot and Haley in and Chris above Ski are the crew members, So I've got more to say about these individual people, but I should finish sketching out the mission. This launches Wednesday night. On from pad 39, which is SpaceX is least pad out of the Cape Kennedy Sorry Kennedy Space Center. We don't call keep candid anymore, right from where the Apollo flights and most of shuttle launches with And this is the first time and all civilian flight will go up. So there's no actual astronaut on this thing. It's just these four people that have had some training with SpaceX. Now, Jared, the commander has like 6000 hours of flight time and military jets and so forth, which he does the hobby by the way, he wasn't in the service. Um In fact, he was a high school dropout at 15 Wow selling credit card processing terminals. But anyway, so he's the closest thing to an astronaut to have on board and then Scion Proctor did some training as well, and they're going to go up there for three days and not go to the space station. They're going up actually above the space station or but this is the highest. Anybody will have flown since the shuttle went up to use the Hubble mission in 2000 and nine the servicing mission and they've got where the hats would normally be on the front of the capsule. They've got this big hemispherical plexiglass dome. So one or two people at a time can go up there and just stare out at the great nothing and it's going to be really cool. This is a no. Go ahead. Start the first. Well, it strikes me that this is way beyond anything. Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos did. I mean, these these people are going into orbit. They're not just going up. Says Musk. You mean branch of the Yeah, you know, Yeah. They're not just going up and coming down. They're going up higher than anybody has gone and then they're gonna orbit for three days. That is why I mean that's for real. People have gone further, but it was always, you know, military slash Napa's astronauts or or the Russians? That's it. So, Yeah, this is a very big thing and other than one of them being a billionaire, The rest of them are us. You know, this is the first time just regular old folks are going to be going up there. It's a self flying spacecraft, so they only intervene if something goes wrong, which is great, and it's just it's a very big thing. And it's funny. There's not getting nearly as much pressing. The other one did not. I should. Yeah, flicks with doing a mini doc on it. If you get a chance, you should watch it. It's called Countdown inspiration for a mission to space. They've done two of four episodes, and I tell you I mean, I used to climb on Nick's back for loving interstellar all the time because I didn't enjoy that movie. But I'm the harshest criticism. I have. For media is for bad space document reasons, but a lot of them. This one is sensational. You'll laugh. You'll cry. Close your heart strings. You know they show the reveal where SpaceX and, uh, Isaac Hman, calling the other three people saying, Hey, you won. There's tears of joy and all this. The cutest thing is when they call Haley, the, uh, medical technician from ST Jude's, Who won the flight, the one with the bone. Insert your first question is, Are we going to the moon? Thank clearly she has been studying this yet. Just we're going to break. We're going to break and come back and do more with Robert. I hope people understand. That somebody put up, you know, Screw liens and scroll Ian's dollars. But nobody on this. Mission. Is an astronaut. And they.
