"Podcast. We imported the mighty. Gmc podcast network. I am you're humble host Howard Fletcher. Hope all of you all are doing well in these very trying times. It's very strange. Hopefully I can keep you entertained and informed about all things television for the next hour or so. Today's show is going to be a little bit different little bit piecemeal. I'd like to have more substantive and cohesive segments. Some people would question that but I try but you know with so many shows being put on hold so many things sort of in a stalled place. There's not much breaking news but when there is breaking news you can be sure that I will let you know so today. I am going to start with the Olympics. The Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo where we postpone for a year until next year twenty twenty one German German. Why don't you stay in Japan? I'm wondering by the Jamaican. Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo announced on Tuesday of this week. Which was the day. My lascaux came out the postponement like the krona virus. Break outbreak is going to have a big impact on the TV industry. Comcast which has the rights to show the Games in the US has been counting on hundreds of hours of coverage swing of archery trampoline gymnastics all kinds of stuff to lure viewers to its. Greens in an era when many of them might opt for streaming movies or TV series or or even going out. But there's a lot of competition right now for viewership on television. Nbc Universal has already sold more than ninety percent of its ads for the Games and so and that immaturity that it sold as added up to about one and a quarter billion with a B. Dollars the company's Parent Corporation which comcast agreed to pay four point three eight billion with a B. for the US media rights to four Olympic Games. That's going to include a winter Olympics. They won it. They bought the Games from twenty fourteen to twenty twenty these games. I we coming up and seven point seven five billion for the broadcast rights to Olympic Games between twenty twenty one and twenty to thirty two. They love the Olympics discovery. In two thousand fifteen agreed to play approximately one point four four billion dollars for the rights to broadcast the four Olympic Games between twenty eighteen and twenty four that are supposed to be in Europe. Postponement is also expected to hurt the Japanese economy. Of course they're not going to have as many people who are going to be coming there this year. In fact people are going to be staying away because the coronavirus. It's been estimated that canceling the event is going to put a dent in their overall economy of about seventy four billion dollars. So as you can see this thing is you know this unfortunate viruses epidemic pandemic actually is really affecting people not only getting round but financially at the end of twenty nineteen organizers estimated. The total cost of twenty twenty Olympic Games. We're going to be around twelve point six billion dollars now when they break. That cost down shit. The cost is going to be shared. That means to put on the Games that is those other costs were four. I was quoting. Were just add advertising and broadcast rights. The cost of putting on the Games is shared with the city of Tokyo which is paying five point. Six nine billion Japanese Organizing Olympic Organizing Committee. Which is paying five point seven billion dollars in Japan's central government which is paying one point? Four billion dollars was a disaster for the Olympics. My B- Little Ray of hope for movie theaters though because during the Olympic Year's summer Olympic years especially Theaters hold off on releasing movies because they expect a certain percentage of people to stay away and be watching the games so they weren't going to release as many movies this summer. Now because a corona virus a lot of the releases have been held up and or push back all the way to the next year while now that they're going to be no Olympic Games and they've had to close theaters down this spring and going into the summer. The end of the summer might be saved for the movie industry because of the lack of the Olympics. If theaters are able to reopen by then we shall see I think is still going to be a big boom boon for streaming services. They're already getting paid. And I think it's GonNa continue to the end of two thousand twenty well animated shows whereas all these things are being held up. Movies are being held up series or being held up because production companies can't shoot because people can't get together enemy. That shows have put together a work around as much as the television industry remains on hold because of the productive. Shutdown animated series like the simpsons are adopting and finding new creative ways to keep the show going. All of the animated show is produced by Disney which is owned by by Twentieth Century Fox. Which is the owns. Those are cartoons. Call Carton those are animated shows that include the Simpsons Family Guy Bob's Burgers and Duncanville all very successful shows. They are using a program called toon boom in order to work on shared story board so in other words they can do like Zoom Meeting Story Board without having to physically get together other shows. Light Net net. Flix is big mouth. Recently completed virtual table reads again on a Group Internet meeting situation at Family Guy. The show's composer had. This is pretty interesting. Is Attempting to do a remote score by having musicians play from home now? I know artists like to be more collaborative people aclu more collaborative I like to be more collaborative. Even I'm doing this so low. Podcast however I think this is something that was going to come into fruition. And a lot like a lot of these things and the corona virus situation has just accelerated it as movies and entertainment ventures become more international instead of having to try to coordinate a time for everyone to get together. I think if they can get the sound right people are going to start doing more this remote recording of not only voice voice overs like they would do for the Simpsons Bob's Burgers but also for scores for not only television but movies Fox owns this animation. House called Bento Box. Bento box puts together shows like Bob's Burgers they are having in-house animators use a program called harmony to handle retakes and new animation with tight turnaround. So these animators don't have to go to the studio or to wherever they went to collaborative -ly or on site do these edits or this new animation. They can just do it at home. And do it remotely other theories such as the Simpsons Bob's burgers again Duncanville and Netflix X.'s. Hoops in Apple's central park. They're still putting out episodes for all for their respective production companies and homes there among the rare scripted original still be producing and delivering new episodes as hundreds of broadcast and cable and streaming shows have been shut down so as we all know. Why am I talking about this? Well it does have to do with television. But it's also a stewart the future of television because as we all know money makes this world go round and money is what drives these distribution and streaming services. They need to make money and they can't afford to shut down and so while animated series. Well the simpsons has been a cow for Fox and but as they find that they can create these shows with lower overhead and still get viewers and something like a pandemic isn't GonNa shut them down. I think there's going to be a premium on animation and we might see a lot more virtual shows you might see more shows that would be live action become something that are that's just generated CGI animation and you know not meant to be cartoonish more along the lines of anime. So we'll see what happens. These are strange days. Indeed next. We're going to look at the shows that you can expect to see on the second half of April last show. We discussed some shows that are scheduled to premiere in the first two weeks of April. Some of these have gotten pushed back already but they're still on the list. My Name's Howard collector. this is Bloomberg gaming all right thank you Michael and it's six twenty on walls rate we are live from the Bloomberg interactive brokers studio and joining us now is greedy Gupta with the Bloomberg markets live team creates a pleasure to have you back thanks so much for joining us this morning and we want to talk economic data give us an idea of what you see well things are looking pretty good right now I think the next thing to be watching though is the consumer right the narrative has really changed the really big emphasis on economic data as if it wasn't important enough to begin with a few months ago we know we were we were looking at just weakness in the manufacturing sector saying you know we really was a spill over to services we hope it doesn't spillover into the consumer help these that these trade headlined Dona scare the consumer into hiding throwing us back into recession all that seems to have faded now we're looking really going into twenty twenty what that consumer spending looks like at nine forty five AM today Bloomberg consumer comfort index data coming out that should give us some indication we're really into the holidays it's gonna be crew or sorry excuse me into the new year it's gonna be crucial still in the holiday mood clearly it's going to be crucial to see just how the consumers doing any data on that front will will be really point to watch it's a pretty just bottom line it forces the idea of a recession and still in play possibly I don't think so anymore it seems like it's faded are you remember when Christian on the monies to come on from from Oppenheimer I guess now invesco he uses a five more years I would say you know what you're crazy it's not going to be five more years coming in twenty twenty and it kind of seems now it's going to be five more years down the road I think that paranoia though of the economic cycle just ending just out of you know just pure economics the end of this economic expansion is coming the question is when so I think some of that paranoia still going to be in twenty twenty but like I said before the consumer still strong we're still doing really well some of the data after the holidays is going to be going to be crucial and I think as long as we say you know the consumer spending really turning the economy here we're going to be kind of fine for the time being any any big signs of recession it's just gonna show up in that in that arena so is it still in play yes is it postponed I think that's more likely the answer all right fair enough now I do want to get into something you just touched on that holiday spending data what are you looking for in the coming days and weeks well retail sales is this gonna be crucial going into January and then any of that data coming in ahead of earnings is this going to be really important because when you look at earnings we need to see what we know what are they attributing revisions to whether that forward guidance looking positive for guidance looking negative what are they saying is is the real catalyst here of a few months ago it was it was traded was trade uncertainty we're gonna you know kind of had that's we're going to see turn our forecast lower just on an uncertainty I wonder if going into the new year they're gonna say well you know what the phase one deal is signed yeah a let's move let's move forward I think things are looking great were still expanding especially the retail stores that will have you know massive holiday data holiday spending coming and so if we see those numbers look really positive we could see a real change in tone here especially for that realty retail sector which has been under water for a good chunk of this year and next year could could be a turning point that when we talk about the earnings season I'm curious what you're hearing in the earnings calls well so far things seem fine I think there's a little bit of like positivity on on the trade deal once again I think I I I really want to see what what they attribute to write because I think a lot of the verbiage that we saw last earning season what was that uncertainty was brexit was geopolitical risk in and let me also point out here that the geopolitical risk hasn't exactly and it they're still kind of a wall of worry happening they're still you know protests in Hong Kong the brexit deal hasn't been solidified trade house and still been signed so those factors are still in place so you know something they could be saying on the call right now in the holiday mood won't necessarily be true you know three weeks down the road when all these traders are back at their desks so the narrative could really change I want to hear from you know the CEOs from the C. suite folks on these calls what is it that they're really concerned about Alec specific risks and I imagine my guess here is gonna be that they're gonna you know highly what I just said they're going to be watching the consumers are gonna be walking the economic data we already know we're in a slow down how long is this going to process to that's going to be the real question and I'm curious what to hear what they say about it from coming up a business standpoint right those of the X. factors that you listed but it's not really clear exactly what we need to be watching in about a half a minute as well we have left here what do you think about the credit market coming up she'll go into twenty twenty in and refinancing is going to be a key key player of that what we're looking once again back on those earnings calls how are they planning on treading water into the new year big theme this year was the debt diet wise you know capital spending keeping us cap expending in check living within your means this next year could be crucial for for refining to see them kick the can down the road okay we're gonna watch it right there with you thank you creepy Gupta with the Bloomberg markets live team our terminal customers can "Michael good morning good morning here in thousands of people are kneeling in prayer in Indonesia's Aceh province at ceremonies marking the fifteenth anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami one of the modern history's worst natural disasters the massive December twenty six two thousand force an army was triggered by a magnitude nine point one earthquake off Sumatra island it killed about two hundred thirty thousand people in a dozen countries okay now was governor has renewed calls for Japan's central government hold construction of the US marine corps base being relocated to a less crowded area of the southern Japanese island despite vehement local opposition according to a defense ministry estimate the project will require more than twice the time and costs earlier estimated in the Christmas NBA both very the Celtics warrior seventy Sixers clippers and delegates all one global news twenty four hours a day on air and on quick take Barton Berg powered by more than twenty seven hundred journalist metals and more than a hundred twenty countries are Michael bar this is number eighty all right thank you Michael and it is five nineteen on Wall Street where life in the Bloomberg interactive brokers studios on Bloomberg daybreak and we are joined now by Kevin Cummins an economist at NatWest markets Kevin it's a pleasure thanks for taking the time with us this morning in which to start things off we just want to take a look back at twenty nineteen and get your thoughts the big take away from the past year good morning thanks for having me yeah I mean this year the economy in the U. S. held up reasonably well we had continued to see you know the too difference between the sectors of the economy where that business investment has remained very weak this year hampered by uncertainty with regard to the trade war wall the consumer side of the economy in the household size has held up very well and showed a lot of resilience from March of this year heading into next year into two thousand and twenty we see further slowing in the U. S. economy and uncertainty on a business investment side we think's gonna spill over to the consumer where the economy instead of growing closer to you know two and a half percent topline GDP growth slows to about one and a half percent in two thousand and twenty so would you say that that slowing is also because of the uncertainty over trade policy in in part yes we think that you know the the labor market really has been very resilient this year and has allowed the consumer to continue to spend on a fairly rapid pace but we think that the expansion is going to continue but it just at a slower pace as the consumer side really starts to moderate as we go on to the early part of the year and that sort of backdrop with growth remain below trend of of around one and a half percent coupled with the really soft inflation backdrop that we see is likely to get the fed to continue to have further easing into next year so in our own forecasts that night was markets we have two additional rate cuts in the first half of the year I love it when you anticipate my questions because I wanted to take another look ahead as what you would anticipate from the fed this year so you see or easing on hold yeah I mean this is a message from the iPhone C. continues to be that the fed is is on hold on there comfortably on hold for the time being take most participants think that policy right now is well calibrated and that'll take what they're categorizing as a material reassessment of the economic outlook to change that view but the sort of description that I've lead out here with regard to growth and a slowing in the labor market that we expect it should get the said re engage this year I mean if you look at the inflation data earlier just last week we had the core PC deflator and that was on a monthly basis is only a point one but the year on year pay slip down a one point six percent and that that ray alone for two thousand nineteen we expect to come in at one point six percent that's down from two percent at the end of two thousand eighteen so the inflation side of the fed's mandate has come in below expectations this year and looking ahead to two thousand twenty we we look for the core inflation rate to basically move sideways holding below the fed's two percent target meanwhile inflation expectations of this you look at the survey data from last week's university of Michigan survey they were down the five to ten year measure which the fed focuses most closely on that was down to just two point two percent that's the lowest level since the one the universe in Michigan begins at asking that question in the late nineteen seventies so with the weak inflation backed from monetary policy standpoint we think that you know the threshold for a rate hike is extremely high but threshold for additional rate cuts is relatively low even though the feds message so far as and that they're expected to be on hold okay Kevin I've got one more question for you and you've got about twenty seconds here to answer the biggest threat to future US growth can you boil that down force yeah I mean I I think if if the because what what what the one of the big worry so far has been on trade we think that the election uncertainty is probably gonna take over next year and it's going to weigh on on the U. S. consumer so if the labor market slows more than we think we have payroll growth averaging closer about a hundred thousand jobs a month if we further slowing.
