'The West Wing' enlists big names for its When We All Vote reunion special
"Thanks. I'm a big fan of Aaron Sorkin and tell us why This is a good time for me in television, because I like him so much. He absolutely if you didn't watch it yesterday, a cz, always with streaming. You can watch it at your leisure. But yesterday they dropped on HBO, Max. Ah, Special reunion of the West Wing cast is probably his most legendary TV show The West Wing and gathered almost everybody from the cast for Martin Sheen and Allison Janney and Rob Lowe and so forth. To recreate an episode from one of the early seasons as a theatrical staged event in an empty theater, But they filmed it like it was a play and it was in that shifted from scene to scene and it was really cleverly done, but also just reminded you how Wonderful that Siri's wass and how inspirational it was, even though it was about politics. So if the dueling if the dueling town halls and so you may be this would've last night, but it's still out there, but even more so today, Netflix drops another Aaron Sorkin project. Which he wrote and directed. It's called the Trial of the Chicago Seven, and it goes back to the sixties, when those counterculture figures Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin and Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale and others were put on trial for inciting the riots that disrupted the 1968 Democratic convention. It was a big media circus, and this film looks like it's got it all and including a terrific cast, including two Emmy winners from this season. Jeremy strong from succession and one of the stars of watchman job doing the team. They're playing two of the defendants. You also have frankly, Angela's The judge and Michael Keaton's in there. Sasha Baron Cohen's in there. Doing dramatic bit, and it just sounds like again. Aaron Sorkin is knows his way around a courtroom. If you remember his very first big hit was a few good men. So if you like Aaron Sorkin style you've got two choices was like a double whammy of Aaron Sorkin this week. Now? Yeah, I once interviewed Jerry Rubin, a za journalism student at Penn State, and he was in the Rolfing, which is when you beat yourself up physical. Just one strange cat, man. I got to say yes. I have a feeling that would be a fun one to watch. Yeah. Will be S O on Sunday. You got something? The

If you've done one, you know, it can be exasperatingly time consuming expensive in Janney musters doing more than a renovation. She's doing a remodel bathrooms and a whole new kitchen. It really was daunting the whole experience, you know, bought everything I bought a washer dryer refrigerator freezer, dishwasher, a range, and as she was going to show rooms for all these appliances. In January this stressful thing kept coming up their moment. Anti. I walked in everyone pretty much warned me that step. You worry. I everything was going up as an going up in price. And because muster was shopping on the higher end that could mean hundreds of dollars. Did they say why are they set because of all of the terrorists the terrorists they've been making a huge impact on the cost of appliances in the US, take whirlpool. It's a leading American appliance maker in whirlpool prices. Barely changed for years says alr- Lacayo housing analyst at G dot research. When you look at what happened in twenty eighteen you saw a big pickup where and at first the price to can upward was pretty welcome news for world bull it reflected whirlpools victory over its two main foreign competitors, L, G and Samsung, they're both based in South Korea. And for years world'll argued the Elgin Sampson had been dumping appliances into the US market at below cost rendering competition, irrational and last January, President Trump agreed with whirlpool. He said a new. Hefty tariff on imported washing machines selling washers to Americans became more expensive for foreign companies and domestic manufacturers like whirlpool could finally raise prices. But then Trump imposed more tariffs on metals like aluminum and steel which is critical to building almost any appliance. Suddenly blinds makers everywhere including world, we'll began complaining about the rising cost of raw materials they had little choice, but to start hiking their own prices on certain products. You could be looking at a fourteen to sixteen percent increase from last year to this year. Steve shine cough owns Yale appliance and lighting in the Boston area and his been in the industry his whole life. I'm third generation owner. Yeah, we're here in Boston have been here for almost one hundred years now, it's hard to believe. But in the past year, the increases have been bigger than most now overall prices of major appliances tracked by the Labor Department are starting to take down month to month, but they are still higher than they wore last year when you talk about machine for people wanna buy front loaders. But for shoppers who chase specials and deals. He says promotions have not been as good as a few years ago. He's noticed one other thing about Whirlpool's Korean competitors last year, both L G and Samsung fast-tracked two manufacturing plants in America. It's great news for American jobs but for world bull. I think this is biggest challenge will ever have and muster who's remodeling her house. "God, I know a lot of you look at this show is an escape. And sometimes I have to talk about things that are going on in the world that that are serious. No matter how serious they are. So today, this is what I saw in the news Instagram most like post is now a photo of aid. Must be a sexy. Tell you that this is the most popular Instagram posts. I don't it doesn't do anything for me. But I don't judge. So here's what happened. Do you know about this anybody some people know, all right? Well, ten days ago, someone started Instagram account and posted this AIG and said, let's set a world record together and get the most like post on Instagram beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner and says we got this. So kylie's photo that they're referring to is this one that she posted last year with her baby, which is a precious photo. And it has over eighteen million likes. And I understand that that's beautiful picture. So that was the record holder, but not anymore. Now that AIG has. Over forty one million likes. The eggs life has completely changed. I want that on the show egg. If you're listening. I want you on the show. So now that holds the record everyone's going to try to beat the egg. And you know, what happens when you beat today gets homeless? Thank you. I spend it up. So you weren't ahead of me. I. So anyway, I think I know how to break the record. I combine both posts I named it Edward shelling. Jenner the third. And it is working. This now has are most like photo, it has almost four million likes on it. So that's more likes than this photo of me in the rock. That's more than this photo of me. And Julia Roberts somehow it's more likes than this photo of Barack Obama giving me the presidential medal of freedom. Hashtag. But I think this is great because with all the divisiveness that we have going on in the world, we found something that we can all agree on. It's a damn eg. That's what we all agree on at least. It's something it's better than nothing. What

"Domain and now back to the show. Alison, thank you so much for joining us. I'm fairy happy to be here with you guys. It's been while. It is very kind of you to give us your time. I have to say these days, it's kind of a pleasure to go back and look at west wing episode. This episode liftoff could actually air today fit in perfectly. It would be about President Trump choosing Sarah Huckabee Sanders as new chief of staff. That's what you're saying. You want? That's that's how I interpret. What you just said. Oh my God. Please don't when did I soon. John wells tell you that you're going to be the choice for chief of staff. Have when did you learn about the storyline? I don't remember that moment. I do. Remember knowing me that I was probably like are, you sure? I don't know. Really? I'm not sure that guy is just not entirely behind the idea because I was so comfortable in my position. They're in the west wing as press secretary thought, I was doing a great job. And I just I loved the way things were. And I knew that kind of change was going to create some bumps along the way for me Allison Janney, and for CJ much more fun to show CJ's bumps along the way than mine there were a few after stepping into those shoes. Interesting so truly your response was in. Did you would have just as soon stay doing what you're doing? I think you've used so capable of doing anything. I can't imagine you would actually well, let's just say this. If I had started off in that role, a hick, I might be totally gamed jump to that challenge. But I tend to be self deprecating, but my, you know, political savvy I just knew that would be it would be harsh shoot as heart. She is for me to fill in the stand there and just spit out all. This day easier. It's easier to do that as press secretary than to have to be the boss of Toby, Josh. And just it was it was difficult for me. And I also made that didn't need to get ahead of myself here but going down the road in further episodes. I remember always having to tell the director. I know don't have a line here. But shouldn't they all look to me for a nod like needing to have that power? I can't create that myself. Everyone has to give me that power like a cat play the Queen walk in the room. Everyone else makes me the Queen. I I have to. So that those moments I found a little tricky. And it was comfortable for me to say to ask for those things. But no, I think CJ absolutely capable of doing that job at I love how she goes about it in a way of let's just not make this a big deal. Okay. Let's just, you know, just businesses usual. I'll just be chief of staff it's not like it's kind of a fish out of water, but not really out of water, but it a different water, and it was enormously fun to watch her. Navigate the transition and everyone else what were the bumps that you anticipated for yourself? The Allison Janney, bumps you thought, you might might be coming your way having to be the boss of Josh. And Brad, and Richard and be in a room and have to have them..

"On this this this really exclusive island, that's this private island, very few people on it and honeymoon. They are on their honeymoon. And and portion I r- there, and we were in Barack Obama happened to be there. He was writing his book. So portion I had been working out with Barack in the gym every single day, and and they came in and he was wearing the shortest beggested one thing to wear short shorts, but short end baggy, and and nothing underneath. Well, it I didn't look, but. But they came into yoga, and he said, and she's like you wearing that. And he goes who's going to be here? Yeah. We didn't know you how fancy this island was going to be. It was quite a shock to walk in and say, you or shy and then. Yeah. And so anyway, so we just never stopped making fun of him for because he was he was trying to do yoga, and literally he's in positions like this. And and the short term like an he's flying hold his hand like that. And you go to Jim talent put it that. It was in Barack like stepping over him to like do things because it was a really small gym. It was really just us in there. It was funny, and he was so upset off teeth three shorts out and they thought it was low injury. And so they wash the in return them to yoga. I was like, I know who's shorts. They're not mine. I know who they belong to. And so he's he must be mortified absolutely to this day and too. And I'm glad I reminded him of it. Yeah. I'm glad we talked about it on national television. Once again for those are the people that twice. Well, that's what he gets. He deserves it. I saw picture of a cute dog in the in the packet that it looks like you did you rescue the song? Yes. I wasn't aware that we will rescuing. I know she's so cute her name names bell. And she's a pit mix. We don't know what the mix pot is. But she's growing at an alarming rate. So I'm guessing mixes something big. Let's talk about this movie. What what departure from Tanya to the Queen and this makeup. How early did you have to get up to put that on took? I think we got down to three to four hours in the makeup chair. So it was a three forty five AM cool everyday. It's not good. I'm not a morning person. And but after like four hours in the channel, I'm awaking four hours in the chair. But that's a pantley how long it took Elizabeth's to get ready. So kind of what for the character and she wore that makeup because she had chicken pox right to cinema pucks. Smallpox? I think I don't know what it is. I I was raised Christian Science. What is that? What is the difference? I don't know. I will smoke. Fox's a pretty severe, and it left a lotta people permanently Scott so alva- in this in this depiction of Elizabeth we. Really dove into the smallpox, and then play up the fact that it left apparently Scott him. That's why she kept packing on the the white makeup that had awesome and lovely things in it. Wow. Yeah. And did you love playing that was that? I mean that seems like a huge commitment yet. No, I loved it. It was it was just something totally different and Janney circle. Who's the makeup in head design on really I have worked with her before. And I know it work, and I was like I trust you have you want to do because you like wearing a lot of make. I mean, you like the whole idea of special effects and all that right love special effects makeup.

"Janney got it instead and not only would i have preferred hadish to get it just because it really is a wonderful hilarious performance in girls trip i'm not a fan of allison janney and i tanya and that really hurts me because i love allison janney but it's just one of those situations where there are many other performances of hers that i wish were getting the recognition this one is getting and i'll admit to i can't even completely articulate i haven't been able to figure out why i don't love that performance because i don't think she's chewing scenery and yet there's something about of this just a little bit too big in a movie that you know let's be honest is big in lots of ways the just doesn't quite work for me so that's the one i'd replace she's not cheering scenery but that paradigm her shoulder is true the movie really wants though scenes to shoe scenery and this was related to one of my reservations about that film in general that the empathy it extends towards tonya harding in that film and i appreciate it does not extend towards her mother that janney plays in so i do think that that's a limitation to that performance that has more to do with the film itself than janney but still i wouldn't have put her among my favorite supporting actress performances of the year either thrilled to see mary j blige on that list she was among my favorites and i just didn't know if she would be recognized by the academy laurie metcalf was my favorite smart performance of the year so so that's great i was hoping be michelle pfeiffer in mother might get a nod there was a lot of talk around her performance when aronovski is film came out but i think the maybe a little bit of the push back against that movie in general and that it came out i think it was the summer hurt her and then here's a real long shot but our producer sam vent hogan will appreciate this nod to cure in kiki who plays the grandmother in they hear a kazu create a film enter the storm alana so it was really championing throughout the year i did finally get to catch towards the end of the year appreciated a lot and she is.

"And i think everyone on this podcast is is pleased with the general trend of how the eitan and nominations are going to sue who knows but i just don't understand the allison janney performance it despite the problems with the movie if you have them it's as such e it's easy for her i don't understand our warning allison janney can do this kind of one liners in her sleep and i i don't get it i don't i don't get a dealer it feels like the kind of performance with her if you ever looking duly rb of like previous supporting actor or actress winners it seems like one of those very dated ones rudest like oh yeah i guess you would have voted for that in the '70s the feels like upper on your shoulder kind of bits you one liner mean mom roll just doesn't feel very contemporary as a choice to me and i don't mean that in a pop little go away i just me that it's like seem to in a way that seems to obvious um whereas mccaw an even even every right up that i saw this morning pointed out that were in mecca was the more nuance are interesting role so it's clear that we all seem that bank bed laurie metcalf year is the wanted to be paying attention to but allison janney just keeps winning and good for her first oscar if she wins i have a question for you shine which is just it it allison janney and margo robbie were both instrumental in the in the making of i time and sort of making that happen do you think there's anything to the idea that that is being rewarded whether they're rather than their performances as i do think that that is what has been identified in allison janney performance specifically which is that you know she's very very close friends with steven rogers who wrote the screenplay and the par was written explicitly for her and if if she were to not get it um i don't think this movie would have happened and even though what you guys are saying is true and you at a man i know specifically are a long time allison janney watcher the fact that is kind of her hitting hurt.

"And so it's a lot of their versions of who she was and then that documentary from when you're with the bird then you really get a sense of who cadence in her attitude in her mannerisms in that documentary which i think allison took a lot froman any amazing thing with allison janney as a as as an actor is it's the most vile stuff that she's doing and saying is is the most heinous and somehow she makes is the leica and this is empathy and you can feel the pain whenever she's talking it's funny as it is you can feel she's almost regretting it as soon as she sang it you know you see that i feel like you see that struggle in her and that's like that so talent as an actor yang that incompletely operates i dunno if we like her but we we don't want her to be our mommy but uh but she's in good but it feels incredibly humane in an honest you know and and you can see and feel that struggle i'm curious on that note the did each of the actors have an opportunity to talk to their counterparts like what added that play out magoe obviously did and then as so much time they spend together margo and to not that much said martin is so much footage on tania amin more than than any of the other characters obviously somato really did who work with that and she would listen to the the audio and that the really get it all down and then she wanted to do all of that first before she met tanya and just just have a conversation with her and explains her that she's playing a character this is her interpretation it's not you know it's not a faithful rendition of of of of tanya so that was for her fisa bashing he really wanted to meet jeff because there's not that much footage of jeff and generally it's him or after the incident being interviewed where he's got his his.

"Oh yeah so just that was just one of the things were it took me a little bit of getting used to oddly enough the person in the film so for allison janney crushes it absolutely crushes it because she is amazing and everything she does yeah as tonya harding's motto she has the bus line delivery of any movie i've seen so far this year and when i mean line delivery i mean stating of one line reading like she spoke at one it i don't mean like her perform but um his group performance we'll talk about that but but she has i studied laugh because watching it at home mmhmm which we were fortunate enough to do yeah um there was that there's the scene it's it's five seconds long who it's in the middle of the movie came allison janney character she place tonya harding's mother in a just irascible awful human being of a performance rate much there is a moment though where she has been out of the movie for a little while and so the movie is is edited extremely well well and a lot because the mood he hasn't city still it jumps around a lot in the end i think some of that is the hyper kinetic nature of of not only tonya harding in but the stories but the story yes so many pieces to it just getting to the olympics that you you need to get an idea of who she is e county just get this like runthrough of everything and so there's a lot editing going on in the movie like is just jumping around doing lots of different things and then it stops and it's shot from a back and allison janney is sitting on a couch without oxygen um and if you've been a bird owner had ordered owner shoulder and she poorest a drink and she again has not been in the movie for awhile um and i can't say what she says because you would have to recode this for i tunes and all of your the podcast right places but she.

"Right now on ciller file i turn to come in theaters in december on goal derbycom argh i've got you getting nominated for best actress and allison janney for best supporting actress your scenes together are the heart of the movie and you mentioned the fact that its brutal at times i would be laughing because it was such drool dra hi dead pam janney is at the mother from el within a couple laughing because he's just so rug blunt and so ruthless but then i altered rick has the physical abuses awful to see it's startling between youtube what were those seems like 'cause i thought both of you knocked another park yeah alphand cabinet well allison doing at characters like laughing and church way you can't help but lost but then you feel bad about it um straight off to it's there's a lot of those moments now film way you find yourself laughing but moments later you kinda hugh but the reality of the situation it is really confronting and suddenly the rim goes dead silent you could hear a pin drop um it's amazing what craig i directed did to manage to pull off the tarn so specifics one that dances between the drama in the comedy and uh it's a very entertaining film the violent moments on not entertaining they are confronting we didn't want to sugarcoat that and make it seemed like something you know an issue as serious as this is by any means easy for someone to deal with so those moments yeah it's it's quite confronting i think for for an audience to watch uh but then you know in moments later you find yourself laughing at something else entirely and uh it's just a wild ride this film it really it's hard to give it a specific genre does encompasses income.
