"Your hosts Tom Hudler and Shannon O'Kelly, physical therapist and president of I R G physical and hand therapy. Welcome everybody to another autumn morning. It's another edition of I R. D. Physical in hand therapies. Health Talk with Tom Cutler and Janet Kelly include what I mentioned Autumn. It is fairly deep into the fall. Now let's AH, let's talk Shane about Maybe some of the stuff that goes on as people encounter things like breaking leaves or climbing ladders to clean out their gutters or just walking out in the rain and making sure of their footing or You know, even carving pumpkins. There's a danger there. I understand. You guys have had unusual amount of people that come in with the injuries because of that, that function, so a lot of stuff to talk about here in this autumn. Autumn safety, You know, it's really important, Tom. You can imagine that people like you mentioned are active. They're out climbing ladders to get the leaves out of the gutters. They're raking leaves air bending over twisting turning, You know, Sometimes those leaves are wet and heavy, so they try to lift him up, not using their legs but used their back. And even like you mentioned walking, you know when those leaves get wet, you step off a curb and a pile of leaves there slippery. They're slimy and you can fall believe or not. I mean, it's kind of interesting topic. We see a lot of patients from these accidents during the fall. So ladder safety, you know, Think about it when you're setting that ladder up, Get ready to climb upon the gutter makes you have a sturdy base. The basis supported make sure they're not standing too far up on the ladder. Don't climb up on the very top of the last step. It actually says it on the ladder. Don'ts. Don't stand on this step sometimes. You know, people ignore that. I think they should have the word stupid. Don't stand on this step. Stupid. Yeah, but, you know, I mean, I've actually experience it personally where I put a ladder up, you know, and climbed up to get the gutter leaves out of the gutter. I put the ladder on my deck. My deck was wet and slippery. The ladder slowly, ladder slipped out, You know, so maybe having someone helping you that's holding the base of the ladder. And talking to you as you climb up, climb down, So you don't miss that step, believe or not? I've seen these injuries where people have phone even if it's the second to the last step from the bottom. You fall You sprained an ankle. You fractured fibula. You know there's injuries that can occur there. You know, a lot of people climb up cleaning those gutters and think I just got to reach out another foot in Greg. I grabbed that pile leaves will reaching out extended beyond that safety center of that ladder. When you fall off for you turn around a ladder flips out from the side. You know things like that has that's called Griswald ing. Oh, I love it. I love it when you watch that every night runs every night Love Griswald, you know, don't staple your glove to the sun. That's another good tip. Yeah. So you know, I've been there like raking leaves, you know. Watch your back. Use good posture. Keep your back straight and flat. Use your legs to lift. You Don't watch someone Wait, rake leaves or even if you break leaves before it's a lot of rotation. It's twisting turning your bending down. You're getting The leaves in the bag or the garbage can Whatever you're doing, Those leaves air heavy. I've seen back injuries. I've seen different injuries just people raking leaves. You know, The other thing, too, is like you mentioned carbon pumpkins believe or not. You know, you're there that pumpkin is pretty solid. And you're trying to grind that knife through there. And also the knife slips kind like we see with avocados and bagels, things like that. But you can you can last rate or cut your hand. That could cause yeah could cause a tendon laceration. And then you have a tenant attendant injury and then you know, you have to get surgically repaired. Then your hand therapy here. Hopefully at I r G because we have great certified hand therapists, but we don't want anybody get hurt. That's not what I'm saying. You know, I'm saying But just just be safe. I'm just think about what you're doing. You know, it all makes a lot of sense. So you just got to slow down. I know I'm always seems like I'm behind in everything. And if I get two hours on a Saturday and I'm out raking leaves, I want to get it done. I want you know what I'm rushing through it. Sometimes it's bending over. Just not using good posture. You sprain or strain your back, and that's when your back spasms. That's when also your your your stove DH up, you know, and it happens and you've got that disc problem down there. If you've got any kind of degeneration, you could be susceptible in your lumbar spine for injuries based on fall activity, So we're just talking about false safety. Good tips One and all. That's ah, really something you know a lot of us. Don't think about so thanks for the tips on that, Shana And as we go out to encounter these cooler, colder days, too, don't forget. Sometimes that step is.

what you have in this right now I've got clubs but I don't have any masks well Jim thanks sure thanks a lot spreading the word I guess but let's let's hope the people pulled pull it together some point I want to show the Natalie to release and also call we're doing what they do that was less fantastical Paul Walker did a great job over there and Natalie thank you for doing what you do with the medical field I like that chan that's very nice oftentimes people call it was disapproval so so sad so it's great to hear one caller compliment another hope and I know Natalie's listen and I hope she's less time because water quality recall thanks very much appreciate let's keep it positive okay we're gonna go next to a Richard in Weymouth Hey Richard next unless I go ahead I advance online love to show thank you I just wanted to say real quick then yeah that mass that was just on talking to someone good advice on I just want to say one thing on when I go supermarket nonstop I see blogs everywhere on the ground and masks hi this is Duong art Quincy rocked in everywhere you are even on my street yet live on okay which is like that shot through the wall that is discussed you're not the first person that that that's disgusting now now I just wanted to say that maybe like stop and shop should toward trash can out at the door because I'm seeing gloves on the ground in the carriages and all that stuff now can we I think that like that's very rude as I mean let's just say there was somebody has to pick that up yes absolutely I I hate litter of any sort I had looked up when I see something on the ball but yeah we're talking about a disease virus and it's like that I I just couldn't believe how many gloves and masks option on the street in the CAD using the parking lots everywhere you can always call us a lot on it I'm saying Hey you drop something there you know I mean I I get I get probably I wouldn't say aggressive but abrasive did you know you really should drop something there home sorry you know that we are that's yeah that day was saying something about blocking one of that compliment all of this on the old rules one guideline people controlling the gloves and masks on the ground like a hundred dollar ticket what's wrong with that I think that's a great idea I think it's a good idea to get people set goals for chance somebody sees somebody there what I want them to stop because I don't know what to do with the valuable like that around and I'm John yeah I've noticed is home and a disposable gloves and masks and let's see let's see if others agree raise a great point and look look if you're gonna take that group that wrote those gloves a mask off or whatever put him in one of their somewhere you know that if you don't you know your mother is your mother is not around to pick up after this that's what you should tell thanks Richard appreciate the call have a great one I love this show thank you very much have a great night all right let me get you in Pennsylvania if you want to get you in here the wire go ahead you yet they're very good show as always the debate did what I look at right now is Dan I'm shopping in the stores that have plastic bags okay yeah yeah plastic bags have been attacked you know for the past few years because of in Bayern mental problems haven't paper bags by the way we're where we live in our neck of the woods up here they don't want to use paper or plastic they want you to bring your own reusable bags which are nothing but a Petri dishes X. it is crazy when I drove past the store let's see I used to work for whole foods I'm I'm retired but when I go pastor stores there's people standing in line with the re usable bags they're breaking the problem into the store I think I think you're right that they'll do a lot of folks who are very concerned about it Wilson legitimately if they were concerned about whether or not Wales was swallowing plastic bags and I don't know you know and and look I I'm I'm a big I'm an environmentalist but yeah with there will be no right well hi everybody wants to your to be beautiful right three three four you know beautiful air and everything but this is the problem Dan this is where look this virus is showing us today how crazy we have become because now all the sudden the way I look at it distortion I go to if they have plastic bags I'm probably more likely not to get the fiber virus you know right now you know you're absolutely right because someone pushed it takes their reusable bag and they think that they're doing this great thing for Mother Earth and all they do is they the reusable bags are crazy it's crazy and there was a real push up here and thank goodness this might wake people up and in some cases in the city where I live it's illegal it's illegal for the store although they've been suspended this now because of the corona virus it's illegal for a store to allow you to bring your own bags it I was bringing my own paper bags in and they said oh you can use your paper bags and they said but we have paper bags and we wouldn't would no longer charging so it was a scam to begin with and and we're done with it he I got to get one more here before the break have a great weekend happy Easter they say well you start thanks same to you let's go next we're going to get here real quickly but I'm gonna get as many people as we can a justice in Somerville Hey Jess how are you tonight I'm doing good how are you I'm doing just great what so what have you been looking for a what have you not found a what did you did you have a Eureka moment today I got it finally what you get it changes all the time so it depends upon the weak and it depends on where you're going I'm exhausted from when I go out to the store having to hit five doors without getting one which is not which is not good it's not good for social distancing not at all I did not approach this is not an issue has not been an issue at all but of course the a third of making my own sauces at home which is great at first it was bred but now there's plenty of bread because everybody now baking so there's no flour or corn or sugar it's a toss up those are like the biggest ones of course eggs is the big one ice cream lately it's been funny one and and not that I was buying ice cream but just walking by and saying that it's empty but I mean if you're allergic to dairy you're good to go because there's plenty of like the lactose free stuff well to me ice cream is a big one let me tag got it I got a big a couple weeks ago I got a big up friendlies got the cookie dough and I've been living off that trust me I did run into a place that minister of toilet paper one day even though I you know had three roles at home I was like I'm grabbing that now because otherwise I'll get in trouble what could we were walking out with twenty rolls right no no one thing you got to share that however a little right now and that's it thank you I do agree with that day the whole thing with the gloves in the parking lot and the face mask that has been a huge issue but my dad is actually you would he was retired he actually recently with all this going on back entertainment with the physician and and we were talking about stuff and ad space and gloves are reusable if you have cleaner and sanitizer defense had with them now I know that there isn't that in the grocery store if that does not exist I thought that that make that hi am I meant to ask I meant to ask nurse Natalie there if you could wash your hands with the gloves on to sort of random is that doable yeah it's your fault so one of the big things and this is something that I've seen are people going into liquor stores and looking for high proof alcohol now with that being said there was a woman who was desperately looking for a high proof alcohol and she walked with a bottle of rum even though the owner and I'm a bartender with like you don't want to take that washer counters it's thought added sugar in it because then you know the alcohol evaporates and you just created a Petri dish on your circuit does not sure which way why would you waste good rum cleaning your cafe but a lot of liquor stores by mid summer about I have Jerry's liquors which is right down the street he's been bringing N. grain alcohol that's like a hundred and ninety two hundred ninety eight hello very she although I just said you're right near don't light a cigarette near the sun do that but the thing with what my father sat on a lot of one thing that we don't see if lifestyle but you don't want to use a lifestyle because of the chemicals that are in it if you agree then those critical it will actually make your lawn more susceptible it'll bring down your immune system because I am a cult but it's great alcohol and you put it in a great bottle because it's such a high roof and it doesn't have anything else in it any other added chemicals you can spray down your maps and outside the gloves and rub your hands together with your gloves and all of that but it quickly and it will kill that it will kill the virus that is good to know that that is good to know Hey judgeship if you call my show before I don't remember your first call great call so like this is great alcohol if apple alcohol it's okay for consumption but it will it will kill the bacteria and it will instantly evaporate but won't poison you in any way you're going to liquor store he said if you said it was Gary slickers not the same Gary's from west Roxbury J. eighteen Jan and Jack generous Jerry okay so how do you do you have to ask for the grain alcohol or is there a particular brand that you'd recommend honestly he got he brought in at birth you bottom one type but that he brought in a cheaper type that the.

"In foster care so talk about a couple of parties real quick so You know the first lady is doing an incredible job especially with her preschool initiative Which you know. I was glad to support on the education sub In appropriations I think that Which is very well thought. Out To make insurance specially that we're working with the youngest and the least to make sure that they have the best shot you know a full robust education. And so she's doing in you know has done incredible work in that field. And she's an educator so her heart's in it and so I was glad to support her. Vpi initiative One of the things I worked on my first year and I'm still working on Senator Mason I actually are the CO chairs. The Oscar Caucus in Virginia in Virginia in They'll be doing New Hampshire here shortly. But two years ago we were forty-ninth of fifty in the country for foster care policies placements in the lake. Reunification all these different metrics. I mean we were just awful And so what our goal was and I was adopted. So that's something that I'm passionate about making sure kids. Have you know a kid in foster care should have every single opportunity every other kid? Has You know what I mean. They should go to school. They should be able to learn Without Struggle They should be able to. You know living normal everyday life and it's hard for kids and Fusco they're already ripped out of you know Their core situation and they're dealing with a lot of different situation so What our goals was when we started busker caucus was to work on setting policies. Fourth totally revamp that system so two years ago we were forty nine fifty and in the past two and a half years. We have done the most meaningful overhaul foster care and adoption policies since nineteen eighty two. And I wasn't born then so yeah Senator Mason is been incredible to work with He's really got a heart for this and we're not stopping so You know we've worked in close relative adoption to make sure we expand that definition of family You know the code never thought years ago that we would have grandparents or great grandparents raising children right Kind of offering that Kinship care is with the new term for that is So I passed the Kinship Guardianship Assistance. Act Two years ago to really work on Making sure that we can put their next of kin. Said set of some of them may be halfway across Virginia to Open Foster Care. Placement at upsetting. You know the root of their life so It's one of the main things I worked on. You know it's it's it's something I'm going to continue to work on whether it's a hot button issue or not. You know it's important to Virginia. That's excellent work. I hope you're able to continue that effort in the future. Lastly So last week we spoke briefly about the decriminalization bill which Just in the past few days since we published has now passed. So can you talk to us about why you joined a handful of other Republican? Legislators in making this a priority are you shocked not at all. I think it's the right thing do So I think there's a couple of reasons for this there are some real technical reasons And then there are probably a couple of other reasons. I talk about in a second but So when we were in the majority I was actually giving the appointment on the Forensic Science Board While back and if you knew the backlogs The state lab. It's it's absolutely incredible and you know one of the big issues. Obviously we know also the OPIOID crisis. I wanted to talk about how marijuana affects that in the court system and a testing situation. And why you know. I I think that Just from a strategic standpoint. It's really important. Actually so nuclear crisis is so incredible because people are making these drugs right so people don't realize when something gets an offer testing especially if he's going before a court of law what has to happen is there's a scientist you know over the state lab a couple blocks up. They have to go through and build the exact A format with that drug is out and provide that to the court will. The problem is almost every single. Opioid is mechanically different. There's there's different pieces of everything and so when someone else to go and testify before court of law. They have to break that completely down. Talk about what it is in. You know there's a backlog for major issues and I think that marijuana was one of them Backlog there so I think that Especially for mistake lab perspective. Think is important that they to the meat of their work And you know I think it's a great criminal justice reform initiative we need to keep criminals or committing crimes In Jail I just. I think that it's time that that we find people for just like the bill says we find people for Decriminalization instead of locking them up one final thing before we release you from our studio to let you go off and do all those lawmakers door something. This is something we say we do here called. Plug it where you can plug something. You can get marketing to something. Let people know about an organization or a bill or something that's on the horizon so go ahead and plug it hilarious. I got to I thought about an I said I gotTa do to so voices Virginia. Children that I talked about a little bit ago. they're a great organization that's really fostering policies To advance education initiatives for children in Virginia. False care initiatives and the like so building a great family to plug this particular organization. Bec- I I've been working very closely with them over the past couple of years legislation for Foscari adoption and they've been with me every step of the way and they care about Virginia's kids so they're important to me And then the other one is. Virginia's kids belong Former Secretary Komo's Janet Kelly. She worked in the McDonnell administration. She started working with. Virginia's kids belong in Virginia in what their goal is to work with all spheres of the community whether it be a private public churches businesses. Whatever so they can find a way to kind of plug in to this industry Whether it be putting together Foster kids for kids going into foster care working with churches or civic groups find more people are willing to be foster parents Working on people to ease The tumultuousness of the adoption process is so they're trying to work with public private business and government entities to be able to make sure they're nibbling at all all edges of the cookie to make sure that we do a better job with adoption foster care..

Tuesday and and and John has our tradition of of giving Tuesday he's going we're gonna be talking with Janet Kelly she's the president of Virginia's kids belong and the former secretary of the Commonwealth you might remember that she served under Bob McDonnell governor Bob McDonnell and she was really with with the governor during his campaign and has known him for many years and he was she was appointed as secretary of the Commonwealth what she did afterward as of one of our projects in the met Mr latest years has been working on Virginia kids belong which you know this is a segment of of the we don't think about a lot you think about kids in the foster care system being very young are being adopted either as infants or toddlers or young children but if you you know considered a unique situation among older youth who are not yet eighteen let's say there's sixteen seventeen they're still in the foster system and if they are not adopted they you know are in a really tough situation where they enter the real world they they leave the foster care system really on on their own and without a big support system that a lot of the the younger children might have after being adopted so you know they they do the best prepare them for that and give them the support they need and what Virginia's kids belong is doing is launching a mentorship program of that will you know serve to connect those older youth with with the people who can provide some supports a mentorship and and really guidance guidance that you need when you're getting ready to head into the real world whether it's to college or trade school or into the working world and it's really a fantastic program a a great idea and I know that Janet Kelly's gonna be sharing a lot more about that in ways that you might be able to help if if you'd like to get involved on I also one a mention on some good news since we were we're hurt we've already hit impeachment in North characterization the Virginia business was out with the new Virginia unemployment numbers of four November they're out now and and and employment in Virginia is holding steady at two point six percent that means that Virginia is the lowest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate we have the lowest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the southeast of Virginia is cruising right along and as far as shopping goes as I mentioned in the last hour we hit a record thirty four point four billion dollars on Saturday on if you're looking to get those last minute gifts in today there are plenty of retailers opened local retailers are open with obviously they'll be you know cutting back on hours later today but they should be open for the most part during the day the malls will be open until six and if traffic of traffic is telling us right now that things are clear out there it should be easy to get around today without folks you know hitting the roads for work I now I'm when we hit the nine o'clock hour I'd like to hear of let's see sorry I'd like to hear a little bit about when we might be hearing from you about some of your most memorable Christmas gifts and you know this is a early morning hours to tomorrow the kids are gonna be op one of the one of the memories I have is is really a sign of the times that I don't think we have this anymore but I remember being kind of held back in the hallway of my house while my parents got everything finalized got breakfast together and got the really the most important thing was getting that camera ready so they we had this film strip can't I don't know if it's a business I guess it wasn't a super eight as the thirty five millimeter maybe it was one of the cameras that it was one of the video cameras not video but it had the had the film going through it I wish I could remember what that was caught I knew somebody out there yelling at the radio the name of that and with the big feature of this camera was that it had two giant lights almost like Mickey Mouse ears coming out of the sides and the top of the camera bright bright lights and my dad would get over by the tree with the presents underneath from Santa and and the family and my sister and I am a little sister and I would would be waiting in the hall and that meant you know we're kind of wiping the wiping the sleepers from our eyes and and excited and we've been we've been a kind of held back we're ready to go the the door opens and we Falkenberg PC Lee blinded by those lights because the the the film is on the cameras on already got the you know what I'm so glad we did that because we have some fantastic movies now of that time we were little and the lights are just such a part of my Christmas flashbacks it says six fourteen now coming up we're gonna be talking to Tim Murtada on newsradio W. RGA.

"A awesome school I can tell you the are and I think this is I mean this is also an extra analogy of it being Oh so many diehard fans on the cast as well as I think they're extra leery about each and every person you know I feel like maybe in another as in maybe a ghost island for example the triumvirate of Molly Jamal and Jackou Molly told me in her exit press that she this was not necessarily a thing it was flee hearn Jamal but I I don't think the king the Queen and the Jack was necessarily as big of a thing as the show made it out to be but I feel like maybe in a different season they could have very easily you know Costa by just being like hey look at someone like Nora who's very erratic who is you know ostracizing herself she's very easy person to take out but I think that because paranoia is running rampant this season it's partially due to the island of the idols name it's partially just due to the people that they cast on the season which is great it's just fostering the took like I gotta take my shot now because I don't know I don't know when the next time is when that seems to be the attitude really in these first two votes I guess you could also the logic of I know at one point like molly does nothing at camp and she's not exactly strong challenges whereas I know Nora is someone who is obviously very fit and could be more of a ah you know a a an asset there but yeah this just just seem to come completely out of nowhere and I really do give credit to like the the Janet Kelly and and Lauren trio on their own as well for sort of being like hey this is an opportunity for us as for a take control the game like the Women's Alliance online NRO decided that as well this time it's really those three they're like okay this is an opportunity for us to be the power trail instead yeah I don't know it it was a fun move and I appreciate the chaos from viewers perspective because I would rather go into a survivor season not knowing what's happened with everything being up in the air not knowing WHO's GonNa turn on who but I can't imagine being out there is a player just operating and chaos is so much more difficult and so to have this happen the very very first vote I would be so incredibly nervous and maybe even more paranoid to then be out there just sort of being about okay who's GonNa flip on who at least if you get the first vote where things seem to be relatively stable maybe it'd make you feel a little bit more comfortable I think maybe I am more on like Tommy's side of all of this where I would go along with it if that's what people wanted to do but I would definitely not be pushing for it and I think the Tommy seems like somebody else who essentially elvis relationships and maybe like he feels like more in the middle but then from Lauren Kellyanne Janet's perspective of really wanting to take control I guess I get that but I just wonder how much control they really truly have with all the chaos well let's start getting into you are usual stuff on the BBC I'm sure we'll talk a lot more about all the crazy Zina's that went down over this episode and let's stay on the molly train and talk about our preseason predictions on molly with an asterisk because as we've declared several times in the past automatically taken an l. this season because Liana says I am biased and that I do have information in talking to these people but I still wanted to play along and write down my thoughts on how I thought each of these cast members Sans Ronnie would do as I left Fiji but Liana I'm very intrigued hear from you molly was a huge preseason favorite for the survivor community at large going into this season where you on the same page so I had molly making the jury and I wrote her choice of soup was slow cooked Chili and that's very important for this action because in parentheses this begins the fall of the Chili threesome plus Tommy so let's just go along with that okay boy molly wrong social game and was everyone's best friend out on the island however because she was super well likes by everyone she was also a threat to win this fact combined with her strategic domino counts as part of the Chili Alliance was responsible for her downfall she was probably voted out by the non chilly people and her final words Molly states she had a good time was disappointed in the outcome disappoint online God that's beautiful so I well she did say she was feeling what'd she say she's like stunned and a little dizzy in her final words like this you point it could have been something on the on the cutting room floor there so I got molly also making the jury I said that she would get blindsided after people realised she was too likable for the end game I did say she'd go home with an idol in her pocket it or her hair and I said that either she or someone voting for her would be making a Harry Potter reference at some point in the voting booth over the course of the season now I do usually I wrote down her closest ally in her worst enemy I sent her closest ally was Kelly and her worst enemy was Nora so Haley you are the arbiter here you are the one looking at the antiques that Leon and I have brought in and determining their value God I you know AH predicting that she would make the jury I feel like that's that's an obvious one like definitely I would have done that as well gee just doesn't seem like an obvious person to go before the emerge but I think pretty well in saying like she's GonNa cause she's like almost two likeable and I think that was the case I know relation like well she was the leader of the mean girls pack it's like come on girlfriend but my thing like somebody would use a Harry Potter reference and voting her out there's something else he said that I can't quite remember even happened twelve and a half seconds ago so I gotta go with Mike I appreciate that yeah I was very surprised you or I know that I talked about Harry Potter a lot with Molly preseason she mentioned Binge Harry Potter as an example and I was stunned when it was not her who made the HP reference but Kelly I don't know if everyone noticed this but she wrote down Molly wogs on her herdsmen which is a reference to molly wobbles the affectionate nickname the Mr gives Mrs. Weasley in the Harry Potter Franchise and Kelly even confirmed that on social media that's crazy that you predicted that Mike I'm actually very impressed by that one I I don't know where that it's amazing it's maybe it's my preseason bias been able to try free cognitive power so should I give them like point seven five points why he's already lost what I've decided so this is just I mean this is just for the fun of it you know and like I'm playing I'm playing with House money right exactly yes so were you or you are I'm not I'm playing with negative house I don't know what analogy is appropriate in the circumstances but see that's the preseason bias when you get to go out there and you get to meet people and talk to them you can do the prediction that somebody will reference Harry Potter in voting out people so there to be fair I don't think her or I could have predicted that she was saddled with the popular girl mentality because she talked about it with me and she even posted a picture on social media l. like she was very kreil upfront to say like I was not cool whatsoever in school I've she was very much someone who is just like an offbeat person followed everything's the beat her own drummer and wasn't necessarily regard as popular cut to nor be like this is just like high school molly is the popular girl and she's like I've never been person yeah I didn't get that at all where the popular kids seen came into play it just seemed like they needed some analogy for people splitting into groups highschool seemed to be the one that was most appropriate for them but yeah I didn't get the sense that what was it it was Jamal Molly and the cool kids I don't know it seems very odd yeah it seems like Jack would be part of like I don't know going like high school musical trope like he's the the skater kid who secretly plays the cello you know Oh man and then okay let's see then Jamal what were the other characters so all the basketball player who bakes yes and I guess is molly can't be molly's that dances that hip hop this that's got to be Nora right nor is the nerd that hip hop dances. I suppose I mean this it's not foot loose footloose we know there's no dancing so maybe maybe era often molly was Sharpei oh maybe just trying to keep the clicks in line I don't do what you love we must adhere by these standards I noticed hale he's been silent rather entire conversation listen did I watch high school musical yes can I do a stunning rendition of that song that Sharpei and her brother do on stage when they completely redid the watchman call it of it Great Music Can Utah yes a beautiful do I remember every part of it gosh now is they T- I did see high school musical theater though I will give myself that is it true that view and thin did that exact condition when you've got your engagement photos taken whenever I try to sing and dance with Ethan. He sits on the couch and stares at the TV in tries to pretend whatever's going on is not happening that's really funny we'll go ahead and make no guard well I was just GonNa say Avia the do I remember this no so okay it was Oh let me start so I don't know if either of you remember but James From Big Brother Eighteen it did this weird long video like a couple summers ago remember there was a cease and desist yes this season assist thing with Natalie anyway there's one line just I always remember from it and it's when he's talking about college and he's like did I graduate no that I come close yes and for some reason I just really like enemy of that and I had to bring it up even though it's not relevant anyway so you're welcome no I always think that when people ask questions that they answer themselves exactly I love it sorry no no I love it I love it love it will Haley I'm GonNa turn the lecture an over to you because in the effort of the being be trying to always keep things fresh like survivor we're gonNA try something new starting this week and look this season is all about teaching lessons so we thought Wede be the students here nobody at the suggestion of like Oh Mike in Leon she tried to teach something is somebody a different lesson this week I don't know too much about this world to be quite honest we only we're speaking into the microphone we live inside tiny rooms twenty seven but we figured we do is every week or listen the first few weeks we're going to bring in our guest the teach us something anything survivor related or not about life and we're going to see if we can stick to those lessons and get rewarded or in some sort of way so healy I know he sorta prepped you for this do you have something that you want to teach us this week yes minds a little awful I don't think it's going to get you too far in life I'm being honest with you but it's funny that you know Mike your prediction skills are so dead on at the beginning of the episode he said I'm I'm the newer of all things bachelor in Canada and those were the two things whereas like what should I teach them about this candidate that's a little easier everyone knows candidate exists do you really know much about Canada we're not GONNA get quizzed on Canada are we you might give you some I give you some fun I'm excited and then you can you can just like hold all these facts in and then when you go to a trivia night at your local bar and there's a category about Canada you're GonNa think of me and I love whenever you're playing learned league or whatever the Trivia he is for the nerds online H. Two trivia each learn I used to learn league as like a very High Level Online Trivia League it's has like jeopardy champions in their Jessica leads is a very big part of it it's I went in there and I very much outmatched promptly bowed out after a year or so what's it called Learn League yes and you have to be invited by other smart got invitation then got to say well I know like I just went again I wouldn't.

"I don't WanNa name enough to myself. It was survive in New Zealand. The host matches him over the cheesy and then in the first recap. I did with the Great Zenon Henry Scranton Saliva. Yes I offer his chizzy another another yoga master yes and also seen badly. You're right saliva hates yoga re yeah so. I asked him who would get his Z. Fishy and he answered by saying this person would get three points. The second person would get points and the dog would get one point which is how we rank things like in Scorpio like an AFL rugby. That's how they do. There was at the end of the year. The UMPIRES gives three to one point to the three best players the game wow on the air. I was like that's brilliant and and I'm stealing it and I have ever since every show that I do and you know give out choosy points and then we have a leaderboard of we see who the best player is of the season mathematically semantically and I think the perfect system and now has a theme song like it's really growing on my no. One remembers handed that mad about that. I really think that in hindsight that Henry who made up that he was a yoga instructor I feel like that maybe not not the right way to go considering that survivor really seems to paint yoga and Yoga instructors in a negative light and it wasn't the right way to go reasons he he like crazy people okay so shannon. Do you have chizzy points to award for this week. No ideal oh I'm happy to do. I've got three points for Lawrence. I think she was the best player of the episode and I loved her approach. That was a really big thing for me like like we saw that the three Jamal Jack and molly we very much telling people what to do. She goes suggested and she's like. What do you think about molly? People come to our in conclusion. She totally gets credit credit for the move loved it for her and the exit interview wally said that she was closely with Janet Kelly so it seemed like it was a good social Mussa to to Chelsea Chelsea the five minute period for Chelsea to make the fire denied all those things that a key to winning modern. US Saliva. She did both in five minutes amazing and you want to Kelly L. E. Like I'm a bit you know. She shouldn't have lied but I get that she's being duped by Robin Sandra out of their boredom and production necessities the hair. I was just like it has to get a point. Give her a point yeah. Can you comment a little bit more about the hair idle Shannon that we got some questions comparing it to some some of the idol title hiding that we've seen on some of the international editions where where does it rank for you. This is the best thing I've ever seen. I I mean I right for a hand magazine. That's my nine to five right. I write about hair every day no idea yeah that'd be writing articles about the best idol hairstyles because I might it's an audience who would care about that. This is amazing. I mean for anyone who has long hair. The fact that hair could like hold the weight of the idol unbelievable she yeah. Oh my God 'cause this is one idol flowing out of your hair away from it being the best thing you've ever seen into the most embarrassing moment in the show's history right. Can you imagine if she's like. I was just so paranoid that you got. The idol falls out of a hair yeah. What did they have been in Australia survivor last year yes yes someone put the idleness shots and it came out so we voted the idle because it was like approved it. I'm highbrow stuffiness. SCALEA and it was super embarrassing. That's what I was thinking of. Also in this even restraint and survivor I wouldn't give spoilers but there was a woman who got an idol and have to come back to camp and didn't have any pockets to put it in so that was the week you on the podcast rob actually like rap didn't close aim was just holding it in her hand and you called it a lady. Lady Bulge purse this then did it again the next week like there were two lady votes passes in a season which is incredible content and it was so bad and it didn't work either time doc and at the time we were told on twitter by Von. Ah You should've put it in a hair and like this was manifested incredible. Stop so would you recommend to a woman who is going through casting testing to grow her hair out as long as possible and maybe would you suggest like taking like boss supplements like biotech inner not bio strath to try to get your hair strongest possible yes because the thing is like women don't find as many idols via in fact bold. Men are like the main demographic finding idle Italy. We win yeah. Yeah I know you. We have invited so yeah hiding it in in your hair and so should you incorporate. If you're a woman should you go to survivor with sort of like the pony tail. Look as opposed to like you wear your hair down all the time or Lincoln differ away and then also hold on. Why do you have your hair in a ponytail. That's weird yeah. Do you think that's a really good strategy. She had an abundance of other any other types of cells. Web wanted hide an idol. You what life what do. I know you could maybe braided in Bonn was best and she was already wearing one. This is just this is game changing strategy right March Simpson. I feel like often put things into her beehive. I feel like that might be be a good way to go. You have a whole bag of tricks in Washington. That's such a good thing. It's it's going to be on the CBS tribe she. She's going to cause some damage. That's on Fox. I don't know what all right let you mentioned Chelsea and she had a great episode. We saw all her did. She find the idol but you also got the fire started but Shannon. I could not notice that she says the word started in a very weird way. Play this for you yeah. I was weird that she turn would be made into his sound clips. We can overanalyze it turned into like two words. I don't know if she lose it chessy point for that the Bossio trying to stop denigrating the decorating. It's not auditory the criteria. You know that it's not I don't she may she got to. JC points. You don't give the language here. I'm sorry that I started and trump says it really weird gone avoided latest Chelsea. It's so hard to survive a player in nineteen thousand content. If you say something a little bit weird we will find it Chelsea by the way gotTa Lotta Shows Shannon. We also had our challenge this week and in addition to individual immunity the survivors were playing for a very exciting reward that they you're playing for Spices Shannon Yeah Day six. Why don't they want like fishing gear yeah. They get fish spices his let's play it may spicing though they don't have any in fee. I don't know it was a very underwhelming your well-meaning reward but I wonder what was it so underwhelming that Jeff probst himself knew that it was underwhelming welcoming and was trying to really build this up for people I you're GonNa hear Dan and then Jeff's reaction to the spicy clearly worth plant so there's a few parts of that I love. Dan Says the spices have gotten him on fire. The one thing we've learned from does not take much to get get Dan going here on survivor survivor. He's a he's on fire already from from the spices that when I heard Jeffs Jeff's wow now I audibly laugh out loud when I heard you the yet he's amazing. They're so excited about this. These people are dying. What was he doing their reaction to the spice that you should well well. I didn't think there would be any any reaction at all. I guess it's clearly worth playing for well well. This is a terrible reward. You guys have very far in the whole. This is our our easily amused. Well not take much it. You guys know this right yeah. I'm conscious. Spices is the worst REWA. I've gotten some some pushback on this because I've said this many times over the years spices is terrible and not worth playing for but now some survivors swear by no no changes when you have spices and you can put it on the rice. It's amazing but who cares yeah. I mean I haven't played but it does. I seem really bad. I mean surely you go fishing fishing constant spices right like that's the order you know what the best spice is. Shannon human human one the second-best spice the second best spice is hunger. Whatever you're eating if it doesn't taste good get hungrier and genuinely thought you're making human jerk. I wasn't humid is good but that's for these fancy pants city folk. The best spice is hunger because if it doesn't taste good go longer without eating so Dharavi Sandra gas prices because they don't have the opportunity to win. Win Rewards being fed what where like what is happening with them. We don't know Boston did seem very invested in the frying pan. Try Listening to you. We're GONNA send you about you. Come back here with all the cooking thank supplies and the cumin from your popcorn I wanted to I will say that I did see there error chickens on the island with Robert Sandra in in one of the secrets that I saw where Robin Sandra are hanging out like waking up their chickens around so I guess the Boston doesn't have to go and chase after the chickens like he did more cases that they have them. I I guess chickens to E. nazi-era proof like they could just be given sandwiches. They don't need to have live chickens there. Yeah I guess so. We are why why do Robin Sandra have to deal with the survival elements like really would make me feel better that they're not coming into the game if they were just like we we got a mini fridge. We yeah we we got to take like a Dharma. Initiative stuff being dropped opt into the island should not be bothering the tribes frying. Pan A sad state of affairs for Open Sandra. Them says the Fares Affairs also speaking of Jeff. There was a moment at the tribal council where everybody came in. I got to see Robin Urban Sandra's sneak inch and did you like that Robin Sandra sneaking onto the premises. I love every single tiny tribal box. It is ridiculous breath every every single by but is it just so. We see them like it's like Oh. There's some danger of. Shouldn't they be loaded in before the survivors get there. We need to see them walking in because otherwise mean you'll be concerned have been there for the whole day. They have air like I'm concerned for them. Do Do you think that that was just show us that how they get in there or do you think it was like sorry a busy shuttle. Sandals Daniel is going on about dogs and we were so we lost track of time sneaking into a comedian and they didn't call you out there like trying to get in five minutes late like what did we miss all right. He was gonNA blow. It was timed perfectly shadow where they had to like all right. Turn around and get your torch and then that's when Robin Sandra snuck in yeah because they're so did they get off on the thrill of sneaking incident. Maybe someone will catch them like they could be in ten minutes earlier but then like that's another boring part of their day because is exciting thing that happens in and is that someone might be like that Boston raw and it'll be like who's Boston Rob and women's friend from the Unicorn yes but I I didn't even know who it was until my friend told me like oh you mean the guy from the band survivor. Yeah I've tiger yeah. I know that no think of the band survivable the show. That's completely unreasonable. The Unicorn seem so bad. I just can't get may well. We need to know more of the details like I don't know what Walton in Goggin character is is a shut in that. He doesn't know he he may be was he frozen in ice and then he a why is he be a Unicorn. I don't really understand what what the premise of the shows anyway so that there is a a quiz another quiz that goes on trial counsel and this time. It's GonNa be for Jamal who is going to get called on in class of what how does Tribal Council Work Doc. Here's Jeff calling on Jamal part of the ritual travel council in this game fire represents your.

"About the day Sir it was a call first time because we want to hear from you and we got as good well mom she's got online and J. T. no let me go back here to Ron I guess Tony all set you got your Mike on your put your Mike back on so let let's get the wrong back in because Ron said he was over in Vietnam and run you're bringing up the fact in course we all agree with you I mean the thing with the Agent Orange well we now find out find out you know you know at forty five fifty years later just how deadly it was and it ends up are heard in our troops as much as it did the the brake Kong. we gave Tony up I will tell you how I got exposed aging or directly to sell Santa aspect okay but like I said I want the Vietnam War to the Vietnam War against war when I got there within the first month or so I started organizing G. eyes do you have because you remember that standard be institutions Robbins that teacher yeah okay and I got G. eyes organized to my anti were actively in literature to me after after work you know in the evening yeah first of all like five or ten guys which is around rap about the war our experiences at home Tuesday and it grew after a couple of weeks over a hundred guys sitting around yes in the peace pipe all right talking you know did not specially combat guys they would get up because he had short time to come to our unit and they give their experiences in the field you know that but they went through and the others are all that whatever yeah and sorties on our base didn't like it but we were not breaking any laws as far as we were concerned it we were just peacefully and if they try to break us up and we wouldn't break okay some guys brought their weapons and but they did they call in a helicopter and sprayed us with the Agent Orange all while the recluse were it wasn't tear gas we you know we go through basic training with tear gas during this was agent ward's sneaking shrine. poison and over a hundred guys were exposed you know the agent but here's the thing what I'm getting at Dave and I also saw a shot here when at the damaged art in Vietnam when I was there are right now if I helicopter pilot immuno helicopter pilots god bless niece they they they save many lives in old shot the pieces so they're sold you brought in the wounded at but dad helicopter pilot for him to have taken on that mission and he knows poison you know we knew it was poised we saw was being dumped on the jungles and on the animals and they were dying okay so then for that the poison U. S. troops having peaceful activity. weather related same pilots were flying into her win in Thailand just to hook our troops in that era when epidemic came she came to the United States in the seventies in it not many people died would know some people are still on the streets maybe you know more when you're shopping carts but you know that's all part of the legacy of the Vietnam War no there's no quote I think Hey Ron I think there's no question that you're right on the money in your back it up a lot of the arguments that Tony makes it I think I do look at back now I think anybody with any kind of common sense at all would say and I say the same thing what the hell we were doing over there and that's why I'm kinda you money more money well you're right and that's what I hours spent I just read the the quote today everybody would Dwight D. Eisenhower said as he was leaving the office and I think John F. Kennedy realized that he gave his speech they highlighted all the time no we'll talk about later on this year of doing a look back in November but yeah and so Kennedy was smart enough course he was over there World War two he knew what war was all about yeah and I I don't think he really had a stomach Ford it was same thing they realized what was going on but once Kennedy got knocked off everything got shifted around the rest is history but as far as the helicopter pilot dropping it on you guys I don't know I mean somewhere along the line if general or colonel or who are captain who ever orders a pilot the you know given the topper and take it off and you know we we got a mission were doing whatever I guess like anything they got to follow orders of they don't you're gonna be thrown and who shall right. yeah but yeah I'll tell you what they want one of the real heroes of Vietnam War which you jobs in helicopter pilot during the me Lai massacre he was flying over it PGE drop down right in front Janet Kelly while the massacre was going on and he asked Kelly said you got a wounded Americans I could take out it Kelly said no get out here it is you want to take these wounded Vietnamese children here. Thompson said in a callous of no legal will take care of them and U. Johnson told his machine gunner put your machine gun on a lieutenant Calley in the other the crew chief to load up the doctor the wounded children he said sure Kelly first is to try to stop yeah you know that that's one of the heroes of the Vietnam War my opinion got Johnson got a metal for Jedi yeah of course he well okay. well I mean so there you go so what we can get into a lot of these different stories we just don't have enough time to really get into it all tonight but I'm hoping somewhere along the line we can get somebody like you Ron or a couple other guys maybe Tony knows in will I'll talk more about it but I thought I could see why the country is being torn apart I mean course you know that the draft was getting re instituted and stuff and a lot of people they don't want to go to the war when it's that was another thing to remember Ron that's when the TV media every night they were highlighting all the stuff was going on all this reporting all the reporting came back negative and probably rightly so with the everybody getting shot and wounded got a bag. every every night it was a body count you talking high right right you don't know if it was just twenty to twenty or twenty five dead for the week that was a good week you know it you know and what Tony you have to read this book to ten minutes of the of the tet offensive content offensive was really a victory for the Vietnamese nurse ten reasons why but but here here's one one one reason we know there were calming the colonel in charge of the Viet Vietcong too shy guy he defected a week before the attack and went over to the Americans and told HIM IT cactus coming it because he he defected because he knows is thousands of Viet Cong in the countryside would never make it to the tet offensive in time because you know when they took the embassy does like twenty twenty zappers it took them they were supposed to been a hundred and twenty okay but they didn't they weren't coming in from the countryside fast enough on foot what happened what happened Dave to the momentum of the Vietnam War wide shifted is because people start to grow weary of CRS on TV every night right and see and people who they knew coming back in body right in caskets and with draped with the American flag and all the young come within one. I wanted to be drafted in row over there because why there was no stated there was no apparent military reason our objective to be there so it was a whole different flow from war war to the Vietnam War two were fighting the Japanese who bombed us at Pearl Harbor war too we were so we were fighting.

"W worthy. When we invite folks who work in the community with our charities and not for profit groups doing great work with lots of different people in the community. And we want to welcome Janet Kelly who's the president of Virginia's kids belong to the air this morning to talk about an organization that she has helped to start that's going national, and Janet I mentioned to you maybe a year ago right after I got here. I went to an event where you were one of the scheduled speakers, and I like you. But when I saw that you were on the scheduled to speak about the foster kids program, I thought oh my goodness. I guess I can I guess I can sit through ten or fifteen minutes of this. And at the end of the at the end of the meeting your story was so moving I just knew we had to get it on the radio. So before we get into the big event tomorrow. I I really want you to tell our audience how you got involved with the foster program, and it's to me. It's just an incredible story of a conservative who talks a lot about family values actually living at Satele tell tell us that story. Well, John thank you so much for saying that, and I'm just I'm humbled anytime. Anyone is inspired by our story. Not just because I hope it Spurs people to action. But because our story is one of those that is one of the best things I've ever done, but it's also been really hard. And so hearing that it's also worth it is really nice. I was secretary of the Commonwealth when I ran into a young woman outside the side on a out of Chick-fil-A at the mall, and she was in a crisis pregnancy situation and just we ended up becoming friends and she had the baby random personally, you just a random person. My daughter had been praying for God to bring someone into our lives to show his jail. So I am assuming that prayer had something to do with that random encounter outside that she was six at the time for was Reagan, by the way, okay? So we this this young lady, and I became friends. She ended up having the baby later that November. He would not supposed to be healthy with have some help. She completely healthy. And it was one of those great stories. I thought well this is and we were very supportive of her. And you know, an of the dad, and I just thought. Wow. This is what everyone is supposed to do. This is how life is face over and everybody just hitches in a little bit. Everything is rosy happy ending story. And it was until about a year later when when this little boy was eighteen months old Ryan, and I and I had just gotten married, and we ended up getting a call from this little boys at Kearney that. I'd like, and and they said, listen, we know you've recently become aware of the foster care crisis in advance. I didn't learn about this even though I was secretary of the Commonwealth. I have been involved in government for fifteen years at this point. I didn't find out about the foster care crisis from a government worker. I gotta about it from. My pastor. So he's the one that said we're fifty permanency we were forty seventh now. But at the time we were fiftieth infirmity, we are we have five hundred kids age on Virginia's foster care system every year because they don't have a loving family. There were at the time eight hundred kids you needed a doctor times. Now, they're only two hundred fifty. So we've done a lot of great working for Jimmy on that. But we're still desire for for flexible foster families, and so I did know all of those things. So when we got the call it was a pretty obvious situation. We're like, okay, we need to we need to do this even that we love them. We've been married three weeks. And I just got married. So we said, yes, we found that we were expecting the next day. So from our honeymoon your own your own kid out of our own baby. So when people say, oh, we got too much going on to foster that you kind of shuffle inside. I don't call them out on on the side side. Because if somebody that's in the governor's cabinet who had just gotten married already had a kid who had a replacement, Donald she got like it. I can do it than anybody can do it. So you brought this little boy this baby in into your home and eventually adopted we did we'd reunification was not successful. We do have an open adoption, which is, you know, I think it's really important for my son to know whose birth parents are to have that identity and how that relationship and his parents are doing well. And you know, it's it's it's a really humbling I will just say that the best way to sum it up. Very humbling experience to get to. Be part of the story and to watch all of the moving parts in the story. And and and see all of the implications from both sort of got my clinical conservative hot on at all times like watching this happened. But I'm also deep in the middle of it. And it is a great example of the power up community. We had a lot of people behind us. You were helping us people. Bring us dinner. We people advocate for him. We have people pray for us. And and that's really a nice segue into our work now because of that personal story did lead into this work. And that inspired you to start Virginia's kids belongs to tell us about this organization. I will and it is a affiliate of national organization called America's kids that Ryan and I helped to co found with another couple in Colorado. So Ryan, and I ended up running the magazine program for governor McDonnell in twenty thirteen last year the administration, and we matched a thousand forty one kids with a doctor. That year which was a significant increase over the previous year. And all we did was use the power of the bully, pulpit and social media. It was dumb. But it wasn't anything sophisticated or smart. I wish it were that we could take credit for. But we ran it where you sort of overlaid, a political campaign model that sense of urgency measuring numbers who is your universe. How are you gonna get people to oppose? We basically overlay that onto eat this effort. Meanwhile, our friends, Brian and Julie Mavis in Colorado had been using high quality pictures and videos of kids in Colorado. And so we basically through a another quite random encounter Ryan and Julie and ended up forming the organization called America's kids along Virginia's kids belong is the third state. We've worked in Oklahoma HIV has worked in Oklahoma and Tennessee, and essentially what all of these organizations do is to empower government, faith, creative and business leaders to end the foster care crisis in their respective states. And in. Oklahoma and Tennessee normally you get a five or ten percent increase in the number late every year. We ran the play. There was a forty four percent increase in the number of foster families and Oklahoma forty two intimacy the first year, we're seeing the retention numbers. Go out and really what this means is it just better outcomes for kids and at risk families. And then you can start doing upstream of the problem and really getting into some of these root causes the sound a little maybe scandalous to say that I would love it. If there weren't any available for adoption of foster care because the community has wrapped around them. So well that they're at risk family are stable and healthy. I think science shows that that is what's best for kids. And if you're a person that say, I think that that I I am I think that's their birth family is kind of God's plan. A if you will. And you know, I would love to see the community step up in that way. And we've seen it work in other states. And I know it's going to work in Virginia. Well, it sounds like it's working and for those of us who consider ourselves to be social conservatives. This is one of those moments where you have. To step forward. And at least be supportive of those who will take these kids into their homes and raise them. Well, you can find out more about Virginia kids belong on their website VA kids belong dot org. No, social this firm has ever failed the bar exam. Kidding? Yeah. So Thomas this question was personal injury. Case plaintiff slips falls outside of a store. We have used this hypothetical. You know, thousands of times on the show plaintiff alleged that the store was negligent in allowing the entry way to become slippery from snow tracked in from outside. And then before the lawsuit was filed the plaintiff threatened to sue the store's manager said, hey, you know, look, I get that there was less outside. But yeah, the one in the four inch heels like come on can't we settle this? Let's agree. I'll pay your medical. Bills. And and then you, you know, you drop these tort claims plaintiff refused at trial plaintiff seeks to introduce the manager statement that. Yeah. Okay. That was slush on the marble entryway. And you picked answer a no. Because that that that the statement will not be admissible in trial because it is a statement made in the course of compromise negotiations, and I am pleased to tell you that answer is exactly correct. I was nervous. Because of the before the lawsuit was filed thought there'd be some technicality. This is the time period place where these negotiations officially can't be part of the whatever. But not so I gotta right. Yeah. You you got it. Right. This is federal rule of evidence rule. Four eight. It is a rule that this kind of question is one that will trip up some lawsuits, but didn't trip you up and doesn't trip up anybody, right? Who is a regular practitioner for precisely the reasons you are ticketed on the show. Right rule. Rufo eight right. The one of the yes answers that you that you pondered over for for a little bit on is. They're going to be a technicality is the rule excluding offers of compromise. That's four zero eight does not protect statements of fact.
