Tell you what I'm doing, Because I found out what day I'll just drive on out your place. Let you know. You better. You got you a low life job, Mr Sheriff. So she plays John. She plays a wife and mother in 19 thirties Louisiana sharecropper family. She shows a huge range grace and gravitas tender or very, very strong, and she's absolutely terrific. And you know, I was talking to Viola Davis recently and she said that when she was around seven, she first saw the Miss Jane Pittman. Wonderful, wonderful TV movie, uh, that Cicely Tyson did the autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. And she said it changed her life completely and made her want to be an actress, and we don't want your sound. Then I want to tell you that the impact it had on me, okay? Jew, Pittman. Q Pardon me, but we didn't go to his grave. No man. Whatever it takes to base a joke. Hey, yes. Why? I can't his name Did this d Well, I'm no dude. Three other men's No. Took to pace up jump in I let him looted from here it comes. E. I have to tell you when I saw that in the early seventies, I was so profoundly moved so Deeply touched to hit me harder than roots hit me on, But she was also in yes, describe that role of Sicily. Tyson, which won awards describe that Oh, yes, well, John, the Bay Area's John quality, directed the Autobots famous Jane Pittman and remember John telling me that it was just incredible to direct this woman. I mean, she I mean, you can't really say it is a director, but she almost had so many ideas is that she directed herself. I mean, she knew what she wanted to get out of this character. She was so it's such a strong idea that there's this old Confederate widow and you're going through her life with her. It's a wonderful if there's a chance for people to see it now. It would still hold up. Don't you think? I think it is available? I think you could get it absolutely is astounding. So important Talk a little bit more about about Cicely Tyson because she really Refused to do certain things and explain that well, you know, Black women often played made Okay, whether it's gone with the wind of the help. I mean it just the way that Woz and Hattie McDaniel, who won an Oscar, you know from gone with the Wind said. I'd rather play a maid than be one. You have to point out. She is the first African American woman. You win an Oscar, right? What happened her on Academy Award night. People need to understand the indignity of it. Oh, absolutely. She wasn't a lot. Absolutely John. She was not allowed to sit with anybody else. She wasn't even allowed to go in. She had to stay in the lobby. And then when they called her name she could go in. She really was completely not invited to the Atlanta premiere. She had it bad. I mean, they mean in those days they all did. It was completely a time of white. Only, however, you know, she did get that Oscar, which is great, and it shows that there are some people in the academy who said the hell with you? I voted for pat him again. No, Tell me about Cicely Tyson's view of race and how she reacted. Yes, She was a real really early out spoken of person about the stereotypes so she wouldn't play a drug addict. She wouldn't play a prostitute. She turned down all kinds of roles and, well, that would have Probably. You know, she could have done them. But she said no. I'm gonna wait for things like a woman called Moses trip to bountiful later in her life. Other Rosa Parks story which was something she helped to promote. Uh so she really Was this totally on? She was also an activist, John. She was very hard for civil rights. Also married to Miles. Davis, Can you imagine the music in that house? Absolutely described Miles Davis just for a moment, So people know. And remember who? Miles Davis was? Yeah, they don't. I feel sorry for them. I mean, it's like not knowing natural right? Louis Armstrong could not know. Miles Davis. There's a really good documentary called Miles Davis, the birth of cool and he was a great the greatest jazz musician of his time in terms of improvisational and the cool sound of jazz, just amazing and a tough guy and she talks about that. I mean, she's got a new autobiography out. She just wrote it. And and then she passed on. So there is an autobiography that just came out of Cicely Tyson. It's called Cicely Tyson, just as I am and it would be, and she talks a lot about miles in it, and it would be a good one to get. She won two Emmy Awards. Cicely Tyson, her memoir just out, was active to the end

"This was not the news I was expecting to share with you. This is not how I was expecting the beginning of the show to start today as you just heard. Great actor Cicely Tyson died yesterday. She was 96. I spoke to her just a few days ago. You might have heard us talk on Tuesday. It was the day her memoir came out. It's called just as I am. I was saying to someone like Yesterday. I think one of the senior producers of the show does like how profoundly moved I was by Cicely Tyson. By her perspective, her presence, especially at 96. Also like her gratitude. You know, I complain about stuff all the time and to hear her go at the end of the interview. The last thing she said to me was Tom. I am so grateful For this moment. In time we talked about her early days, We talked about her career defining roles. We talked about movies like the Autobiography of Jane Pittman or and Sounder. We talked about her role in the TV series roots We talked about Everything you know, most recently she was and how to get away with murder. Miss Tyson's co star on that Syriza Viola Davis tweeted this last night and I wanted to read it for you quote. I'm devastated. My heart is just broken. I loved you so much. You were everything to me. You made me feel loved and seen and valued in a world where there is still a cloak of invisibility. Us dark chocolate girls. You gave me permission to dream. Cicely Tyson's accolades are too many to list here. Emmys, Golden Globes, A Peabody, a Tony and honorary Oscar mult multiple in the Deep Image awards. I mean, you know a million things. Had a clear vision. Mission to bring complex and nuanced black characters to the screen and on stage and tow uplift others who had dreams just like hers. When I got to speak to Cicely Tyson again just a few days ago. That dedication was crystal clear. I am so grateful. We got to bring you that conversation. So much of it is stuck with me and Especially the part where she talked about getting the presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2016. That moment is a moment that will live with me forever forever. And someone pointed out to me not too long ago. That I was the last person and his administration to receive it. Okay on that, he said. He made that statement. And then, he said And she's cool, gorgeous one than I need, huh? That's pretty good. If that gets into your presidential medal, you know that's a good sign. That's right. Well, you know, maybe this is a good way to close it off your 96 years old now and, you know, I think a lot of people want to know about the secret to a long life. And in the book you talk about how celery juice and morning pull ups are part of a key role. But what what other advice would you give people? I think that when, uh You get up in the morning and you're fortunate enough to see daylight. You're blessed on when I get up, and I see daylight. I first thank God I go into my meditation. Another change, and that gives me the faith. The car I thank God first. Very sick needs a face and a trust to go on for another day. And I think that's the most important thing that one have Detective Thank God just seeing another day. I never thought I would like to be 96 years old. My God, Every member of my family is gone. I am so surviving member of my family, and I was not expected to be here past three months.

"This is all things considered from NPR news. I'm Ari Shapiro and I'm Elsa Chang, renowned actress Cicely Tyson has died at the age of 96. In a career that spanned more than 60 years, Taison was an elegant, dignified presence on stage and screen. Less than a week ago, she spoke with NPR's Michele Martin, looking back on her career. It's remarkable to me that I have arrived at where I am today because I had that anticipated it. No matter what happened in my life, it did not did not deter me from reaching the goal that I had set for myself. Tyson commanded attention in such movies as Sounder and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. She won Emmys and at age 88. A Tony Award. She also inspired generations of African American actors who grew up watching her MPR's Elizabeth Blair has this appreciation Sicily, Tyson brought grace and gravitas to the roles she played, and boy did she have range in sounder? She was a wife and mother in a family of black sharecroppers in Louisiana in the 19 thirties. Apart called for Tyson to be tender with her family. Missing the bake A cake for David later. Take you, Daddy just time. Make a chocolate cake. Mom, Daddy legs, things this chocolate and seethe when the town's white sheriff won't let her see her husband who's in jail. You got you a low life job, Mr Sheriff. Taison. It was her eyes that spoke, they could sparkle in one scene and then pierce the soul. In another critic, Roger Ebert wrote that it was a wonder to see the subtleties and her performance. 1972 sounder was one of the first movies to show the strong bonds of a loving black family. Tyson once told NPR. It was also the movie that made her realize she needed to look for roles that reflected her experience as an African American woman. During a press conference for Sounder Ah white journalist told her the movie made him aware of his own prejudice because he said he was surprised to hear African American Children call their father, Daddy. Just like his kids called him. He could not equate the fact that this man was on the same level as he and I, really I I admired him for standing up in an audience and saying that and I thought to myself, Sicily You really can't afford the luxury of just being an actress Cicely Tyson was born in Harlem. Her parents were from the Caribbean. Her father was a carpenter and a painter. Her mother was a housekeeper who was deeply religious. In 2005. Tyson told NPR. Their lives revolved around the church. We did everything in the church and me we had I played the organ. I played the piano. I taught Sunday school, I sang in the choir. And then on Monday, we had prayer meeting and Tuesday we had a young people's meeting Wednesday. We had old people's needing. It was just a Saturday between the church and Sunday, we were right back in the church. My entire social life was in and about the church. And so that is the basis. My foundation. Tyson was also gorgeous. She started modeling after high school. Soon she was acting in movies and on TV. It was the 19 sixties, the civil rights movement. New York was a place where black artists formed alliances Taison performed in shows with all black casts alongside artists like Maya Angelo and James Earl Jones. One of Tyson's first roles was in the socially conscious but short lived TV series East Side West Side. Dyson played a poised, intelligent secretary in an office of social workers. He found out that I like to read books, but I couldn't go to the library Negro Children and didn't go to the library. Tyson's short Afro hairstyle inspired other black women toe also wear their hair natural. She was on magazine covers like Ebony and Miss. She married jazz star Miles Davis. Photographers swooned over the famous couple, Sicily, Tyson always looked for positive portrayals of black women. 1974. She took on one of her most famous characters, the lead in the autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman you had in 10 years old. Mm. So did tell me. How far back can you remember? Off their back. You won't go with the help of a stunning makeup job. Tyson transformed herself to play Miss Jane Pittman. She made her body look withered and frail. It was a rare event for a TV network to broadcast a feature film about the brutal struggles of African Americans in prime time from the point of view of African Americans. Dyson played Ms Pittman at various stages in her life as a young adult. She's beaten up by Klansmen, friends and family members are murdered. Taison captured her wariness as well as her resilience. You're the day they thought girl in jail. Trying to drink from the felt today. He killed match me. And I say, I'm going, Miss Jane Pittman walk slowly to the whites only water.

We said in the typing pool of the Red Cross, and you'd kind of go to the department stores on the kind of the late, Great Lord, Take your lunch hour. That wasn't my favorite place, sadly, just closing its doors. When did you decide that acting? Was your calling? What was the thing that made you say? This is what I have to do. It happened. We could. I learned that I could speak. Through other people. I was very shy child. I was an observer. I would sit And observe and listen and watch people's actions in order to understand what they were. Well, I wanted to know what planted them just say and do things that they did. I sucked my figures for 12 years. I never spoke. Was a silencer, but I was a great observer. Remember, you're writing about the effect. That's a role like sounder had on people where you played Rebecca and I think many people might know the story. Poor Paul Winfield played against you as the Nathan and you played Rebecca and it's It's a story of kind of a loving black couple. Basically, just trying to live against that almost exactly right. Yes, And what amazing was you said that some of the reactions that people got when, like, for example, television writers, saying that they didn't realize that black Children called there Parents, Dad and, Mom, can you imagine that? Understand motion for sounder and after I finished after the film was completed, this journalist said. That he discovered a bit of bigotry and himself. But he realized that this black boy, which should buy first son, Kevin Hooks called his father Daddy. On and when I asked why, he said, That's what my son calls May and I'm not. I tell you, Uh, I was so started to be a few minutes to catch my breath in order. To question What is this man thought? That we were human. You know why Pat my son call his black father Daddy as his sons. Called him and it was at that time that I decided I could not afford the luxury of just big fractures. There were certain issues I have to adjust. And I thought I would use like a rare as why flat floor and you know we can't let you go without talking about Miles Davis. Oh, Yeah, well, you can't because she was part of my life. What do you think you learned from that? I mean, you write about the fact that you all were like the it couple at the time. I mean, you were one of the couples in me. He's a jazz legend. You are a legend in your field. On yet, you know, he had some issues as we as we all know, I mean, he had a serious drug problem and Some other sort of issues. Demons that he was dealing with. What do you think you learned from that relationship? I wish people knew the Miles Davis that I knew. Really because to you can walk into a bookstore and you sing dreams of books about Miles Davis and few people who wrote the books. Yeah. Not only was she feeling they talented, he was brilliantly sensitive, and that is the Miles Davis that people know. I don't know that he was trying to Okay? You have a very forgiving spirit. Well, Isn't that what we're supposed to do? Forgive each other, huh? We don't keep riding a rough truck over a sensitive so you can't do that. People are looking for help. And you look and you see them And you know that they need help. Okay, and you can help them. At least I can. I can always speak myself. Okay on. So what? I realized that he was in deep trouble on that he wanted he wants. He said I don't want to do that anymore. Okay. Uh, So when somebody says that to you And they're asking for help at this. I would try to help them. Before we let you go, Miss Tyson. We have only just scratched the surface of your remarkable life. And I am so honored to have had this time to spend with you.
