What was it a name as many of the five nominated shows as you can okay so whereas all the period stuff happening right now. I am going to go with netflix. And it's got to be the crown yup going back in time. Jesus christ costume design I'm thinking gimme a second. I'm toiling tapping doors open. What is old. Is kate blanchett. "In the hot seat. Hold on hold on. Yeah tickets interesting. When i got the announcement that you're coming back. You texted me five minutes before and told me something's coming stay awake but after five seasons of being away from the show. Why was it a right time for you to come back yet. So you know what. I was actually off for four but it was five years because of you know how filming with the pandemic feels like ten you. It's really weird right. Now is the ten year anniversary of when i started the show. Oh my god. It's very literally right now. Serendipitous serendipitous how is that. Yeah well i mean. I think that in life you explore every opportunity right so they called me like in december and i laughed and i was like stop and then we started talking about it and we had a family meeting about it. Everyone talks about. It was terry's initial reaction was he like you can't go back there no he. He's very much like that too. I remember interview. Jane lynch ones and years ago and she she said to me your best advice as always say yes and i i might not always say yes but but i definitely consider everything in like we all the options and it just seemed like the universe was telling me it was time. I don't know why. But i as i'm getting older. I think i'd get better at reading. The tea leaves and listening to the universe of big open to it and it seemed like the right move asked me in a few months i might have but there were rumors that made where you would only come back if kelly did not true action. Tell us the truth. Will you guys have been in television a long time. I think you would know that anyone that thinks they have any kind of power on a show like this really is very misguided. Having said that. When i left the show i felt like the culture of the show was changing and it wasn't really sort of in line with who i am or something that i felt comfortable in and i definitely wanted to make sure that the show was going to be moving into a direction because they said they wanted to report it. I mean that's no secret. So i wanted to make sure it was going to be moving introduction that i thought you could thrive in that i could thrive in that could be successful and that would be beneficial to my family and and you know helpful.

When i think of jane lynch's maybe a little bit off the beaten path here but does anybody remember her character in the forty year. Old virgin where she's the manager of the electronic store. Yes i don't know why. But for some reason i hear her name and that's what i think of rather than thinking of glee or some other stuff that she's been in as for phoebe waller bridge. There's an opportunity for you that you didn't have two years ago so i love this for women's sports but i just think these video game covers are overrated. So i'll go on the other side. Okay i love the honor for her Personally but i am very disappointed that you wait until all these years that she was past her prime to do this. I'm disappointed that you let meyer more ball out in this league. And you didn't even put her on the cover when she was killing the game. A ridiculous level. I'm disappointed that you don't have sabrina on there. Now who is the baller today or brianna. Who is the ball of today. But because you're behind schedule you had to start with kansas at. She's already passed her prime. But it's not that she doesn't have a career that's worthy of recognition. I just wish that the video game industry hadn't been so far behind in the loop that they look like. That's what john michael higgins always says you you pack heavy. You know exactly how your character would respond to anything. And i hate to equate it with jazz. But i'm going to in order in order to play jazz and improvise. You really have to know your scales. You have to do your basics. You have to know your instrument very well so you come in really knowing who this character is and then when that happens the decisions like what does she wear like. Oh yeah she wears this. Oh looks like that. Her hair is like this. Because you now know that characters so well and then only then can you improvise when you're really really sure about who the person is and your settled in that net solid for you. Oh that's great. Is there any particular sort of exercise or scaffolding or plan that you use to do that. Yeah i do. And it's how i've done it my whole life my whole acting life. I always go right to. What is the vulnerability of this person. What does this person hiding that. They don't want anybody to see. What are they trying to pull off if you will. And even the most honest transparent person has something there that they don't want somebody to know and once you find out what that is like christy. Cummings is she just wants to count. She wants to be a success. She wants to show everybody from high school that they should like. I said in one of the outtakes that i want everybody in my high school. I wanna make them feel like they should have been nicer to me. Because now i'm a big buck and stuff. So it's like it's like a need for to rewrite her story and to look tough when deep down inside she has this wound where she doesn't feel like she counts. So that's where i go with. Every character i find what it is inside of them. That is their achilles heel. If you will. Jane should i die. Tragically in a very public way. And my story gets written maybe. I've been getting my abs- look like a you can kind of tell their there now and i'm sure it list which is not frequently but i shall on it. Looks like i have a six pack with some pancakes over it. That's how it makes show so all right. How i know you're not a no. You're not a comedian. Because you have no cojones in that. Do you have to have that in fact. I think that's what hangs down under my arm clock. That is so were you in chicago and then you started doing something yeah actually. I auditioned for theater a lot. When i was in chicago and i had a commercial agent. I did enough commercials to make a supplement. The income and i was at second city too. I did the touring company. And i did a lot of as cup. S shoot cargo. Second city then. I believe there's some form of the word. Comedian that does identify you. Okay yeah because it's sketch comedy but the thing about what you do paul and do so well and masterfully for so many years is you've got you stand up there by yourself and you have created this persona with the set of jokes that you've worked on that you've honed it and look i'm not demeaning. What what i've done but it is a completely different thing. It's a self motivated thing and it takes a lot of confidence up there to do it and do it well. I don't know what you're like. Offstage beds particular talent. You have it in. i don't do it anymore. Odd oh you don't know i'm going to but you know because of the pandemic in all xactly. Yeah what i've been doing for the last year and a half is not getting you know. I do have some advice for you on that. Stop auditioning your paula. Fucking poundstone let them come to you. It's like jumping off a cliff. Okay you have to take the chance. You have to turn the shit down when someone says. I want you to read for this animation series with the episode arc. Either give me the job or don't give it to me because people know who you are if they don't they're pretending and they're trying to get something for nothing and then watched the they're going to be banging down the doors. You have to kind of be hard to get in and confident and sit back and go. Oh this looks really interesting. i'll take an offer. Wow i only wish that you were casting something jane because i was too because i would just give it to you. You're the only person that i'll be able to make that work with. No have when i look back on the pandemic years from now i'm going to say to myself. Joe's turned me down cold. But here's the great part of the von story. Which is that. I had gone in to ask if they had gotten my application and the manager said oh. I said what can speak with the manager. You know i don. I talked to manager and she goes all yes we did. You know we just hired twelve people. And i said oh okay well could i check back another time. And she said yeah. Yeah sure sure. And i can't remember if i walked away and went grocery shopping or if i came grocery shopping the following day. I don't recall any longer. But i'm pushing the cart down the aisle and i hear would you like a career at the vaughn's and they were. Actually you know. Pull steel james advice here but i think it does apply. I think if you want to get a job at a grocery store you gotta say fuck it. I am not going to apply for that job. They can just come get me. Yeah yeah they were hoping. That's what i would say. They know who. Paula poundstone is. Yeah they do. I had a spill. And i'll nine wants. They'll never forgive me. Jane all right. I can't do this all the time. Lousy interviewer because i always end up telling a story about me. But was the part where he started doing the really cool shit. We loved the view coolidge. So damned funny. The whole thing about the makeup all right. So how much information did you have about that movie. And did you take the job. You did not did you. He told me that he can tell if somebody can do his of thing within thirty seconds of meeting themselves somehow i passed his yes i met him years ago so i guess zoo yes he could tell that i would make a lousy animated weasel the second conversation last thirty seconds exactly. I think that was about how long he had tolerance for me. By the way chris though he's not the most social guy in the world for sure but Yeah he's he's he's a great great person and i've known for a long time now but yet i is. He's a little scary because he's you know he doesn't bother with the social niceties. He just doesn't do them no he. Didn't he didn't seem to. In this case off your kids skated at the rink in culver city. And we'd been going there for a long long time. I for years kind of thing. And i'd always sat on the other side of the skating rink from where he was sitting and the side that we sat on even in the summer. Yeah debris jackets and shit because it was fucking cold in there and i win over because his wife was there who i i knew just briefly and then there and i sat down beside him and i'm like shit it's warm over here and it turns out that side of the rink has a heater and it wasn't like exclusive wasn't the rich people side. It was just that there was a heater in there in a couple years. I've been going. I never knew that. So maybe he wasn't as fascinated by that as a conversational subject. Matter as i was probably not just kept saying. It's warm over here.

You could record your part visa more. There were some recording studios That we're using very strict protocols and you could go so. I did get a job and i read for a show and i did not get the role that i read for. But they gave me another role and so no wasn't caterer. It was you know some sort of animal. It was really fun. I went and recently a two two record student i recorded. You know you give them three different takes of each line and they would come back there. Were on a screen. The people that i was working for afterwards they would say all that we loved it. Can you do it again and tried different. We loved it. This went on. And on and i did four episodes. I recorded all this. They were like. Oh so funny. So wonderful. And i was a bit reaganesque. Kauai can be where. I told little stories that just stalled for time here and there and then men. I went out feeling so great. You know it's going to be some income. And i have a job and i can brag about it and i think it was two days later. I woke up to an email. That said you know we've decided in another direction. Yeah so yeah. There's no business like showbiz. There's no was paula. Honestly i have no idea one of the pieces of good news about having been in the business for a long time is that i don't trouble myself trying to figure out you know. Just you know when the next thing comes along. Maybe yes maybe no but when the next one comes along though you could be a significantly improved actor well balanced on who. Everybody hates Harry and Megan, you know, showing up to their fancy neighborhood and creating all this chaos. And when you read the story, it basically is T M Z saying, you know, the locals like, for example, quote most locals tell us they want the paps to give it a rest. The paparazzi Because they feel things they're getting to the point where everyone's privacy is being compromised, and they're super annoyed, and they're saying That's because Harry and Megan moved to Montecito, and you've got all these other people in the neighborhood Ellen Oprah, Rob Lowe, Carol Burnett, Jane Lynch and the Kardashians by the way. On. They're all doing their thing in their private little enclave of Montecito, and they don't need all these paparazzi showing up to blow their cover and harsh. They're mellow.

We just pick one party, but we're GONNA have a coffee party that whatever you want to put your cup that that is awesome i. Former boys club kid and grew up. Yes, so that's a special in my heart. Good for you that you're raising because you're right a lot of kids. That's refuge for a lot of kids right there. I mean it's crazy, so we're just hoping to get some.
