Safe staffing level for nurses in our hospitals will come before Washington lawmakers again this session. This new bill moves rulemaking from the Department of Health to labor and industries which supporters say will give all sides a voice. Jane Hopkins president of the service employees international union healthcare local 1199, says they tried and failed to get this past last year. We were in crisis. Working through dangerously low staffing levels and widespread burnout. I'm here to tell you today that the state of healthcare staffing is worse today than it was a year ago. Washington's hospital have argued that there are already bleeding money with losses in the billions and that this should force them to cut care. They argue it's not just burnout but nurses leaving for higher paying traveling jobs that is driven the shortage. President Biden is making a trip to the southern border amidst the renew push for immigration reform. Northwest news radios Jeff pojo got the latest from ABC's Andy field. This seems like a victory for Republicans because immigration has become one of their top issues. What is the president going to be doing down there? Well, he says he's going to be talking to local officials to talking to the shelters to talking to agents to find out firsthand what are the issues? What do they need and what else he can do as president to give it to him. He clearly he doesn't need to go to the southern border to know these things. He can read the reports that he gets from his own people. He's talked to them. People have come to the United States. Many of these trips that Republicans have made have basically been political stunts and political events that haven't really gotten much done. And of course, the president continues to say that what he wants to do is to get Republicans to respond to his ideas on how to fix the border permanently to add more officers there to change the laws to make it tougher. And of course, he's done some of that on his own by telling some nationalities from Cuba and other points south that if you enter here illegally, we're just going to send you back home and that he is making provisions for some of these folks to come in legally, but they have to apply legally to do it. So in many ways, he's applying some of the methods that Donald Trump use right now after all this pressure and the criticism that his administration hasn't been doing enough. And so we'll be seeing some of these changes because even the president at this point is seeing that the facilities and the people at the border are being overwhelmed by this influx of migrants. All of this with the backdrop of the court fight over title 42. Yeah, that's going to the Supreme Court in February. It's really interesting that this fight really isn't at this point over whether they can keep title 42, which came into effect during World War II. And it was something that Donald Trump used basically to keep people who have infectious diseases out of the country and they used it during the pandemic to basically reject asylum seekers saying, sorry, you know, we would use them regular asylum laws except for the fact that there's a pandemic, so you're just going to have to stay in your own country. We're not letting you in. The Biden administration really is kind of been hands off of this. It was the CDC last spring that said we don't need it anymore. And then there were other operations saying, okay, well, we're suing the government and that's why we've had this hold of getting rid of it for so long. And of course, the Supreme Court said, well, now we're just going to rule on whether states actually have the jurisdiction to sue about this here. Not that title 42 is right or wrong. That's not what this case is about. It's about whether the states have the power to do it, so they've kind of kept it in their temporarily. But chief justice John Roberts in issuing the statement along with the rest of the court saying we're going to hear the arguments in February. He said there's nothing that President Biden can't do on his own if he just wants to end it by himself right now. President Biden hasn't done that, and they've been very cagey about this in the Biden administration saying, well, we're just going to follow the court orders until this thing plays itself out. And that's ABC's Andy field talking, which I pog. For more subscribe to the northwest politics, available wherever you get your podcasts. It's two 40 and the coogs are in basketball action today. "Number of mental health beds in our state will continue to grow, but just a few at a time. Northwest news radio's Ryan Harris tells us about the new grants. That $18 million in Department of Commerce grants will go to existing providers to build new facilities often with just a dozen or so beds really to chip away at the shortage of mental health beds in Washington, but also to take some of the pressure off of the two big state hospitals. It's part of the governor's plan to bring more of these facilities into communities, where Matt Mays are Hart, who manages the program for commerce, says experts agree people are more successful in their treatment closer to support networks, whether that's family or friends or other sort of social support networks and they're closer to work, they're closer to other sort of social service resources. The deal for grant recipients is that they have to operate the new facilities for at least 15 years. Ryan Harris northwest news radio. A new study from the ad council shows nearly half of all Americans say they suffer from a mental health condition and only half of those people are getting the help they need. It's partly due to a shortage of licensed counselors. The local healthcare apprentice consortium is looking to change that with a program that pays students while they learn to help get them their necessary certifications. Jane Hopkins, with the service employees international union, says that kind of support can be vital to students. The learning as you earn is so important because those are barriers that get in where people actually getting a good job. Doing feeling their families. "Be used in these mass vaccination sites. Specifically in this first tier. We're setting up the following sites that will begin Vaccine administration starting next week. At the Spokane Arena in Spokane. Been County Fairgrounds in Kennewick. Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee. In the car County Fairgrounds in Ridgefield. So the state's allocation for doses for next week will be divided between these sites. In pharmacies and local clinics to begin one B vaccinations as well as existing vaccination. Large scale high throughput sites. They're currently under development in Snohomish, King and Pierce counties. You wanna have statewide coverage? In this degree in this respect. Fourth thing we're announcing today. Is that We're still mission a new criteria. To ensure that our partners in the health system We're administering this vaccines and their appropriate time frame. When that appreciates the urgency of this crisis. But I do want to preface talking about this announcement to realize that The state employees or not add ministry. These vaccines these air partners of the state hospitals, clinics. Tribes. They're actually doing the administration, so we have to have cooperation of these entities. In order to for the vaccine actually to be delivered. Starting today, we will have requirement. 95% of future vaccine allocations are required. Be administered in the first week after receipt. That data must be submitted to the state within 24 hours. By tomorrow, all vaccine providers in the state are expected to provide daily information on vaccines administered. And their plans for using a doses that remain. Every dose allocated prior to this week needs to be administered by January 24th this Sunday They're simply too many people who need access to Kuwait vaccines for this process to leg. Any further. And we appreciate obviously the help of all of our partners in this effort. We need to step it up. Again, you need to step up their game. Significantly. The fifth step we're taking Is that we're launching the Washington State Face finder. And To determine your eligibility now and going forward. You can go to the State Department Health website and use their face finder tool to check your eligibility. The website is deal wage dot wa dot wh dot wall that got basically you. You'll of Fill out of form. Describe your personal criteria and that face finder will advise you what phase you will be in. During this prioritization process. Now for this phase, it's relatively easy. Given the criteria I just discussed. That will help you to make sure that you find yourself in the appropriate phase. The sixth and you will describe that in the face Finer They will give you the information as to where the dosages are. In your area. So you will know where the doses should be available. To be able to find dosages in your area. Six thing we're doing is intended to fully mobilize Tremendous resource is in the state of Washington in this mission. We're excited to announce that we are establishing a public private partnership. The state has developed to accelerate covert 19 vaccinations. Calling this the Washington State Command in Coordination Center. You'll be led by the Department of Health. In partnership with business, health care and labor organizations. His team will coordinate all available resource is to administer more vaccines in the state of Washington. The fastest and most efficient way possible. I think you'll find out from our speakers today. This is very talented group. We have enormous resource is in our company's in our workers in the state of Washington, and this is designed to bring to bear all of our resource is in the state of Washington. Get this job done. Will be enjoyed joined momentarily by a number of our partners in this effort to speak in their role in their old. This is a massive effort. It takes. Everybody pulled it on the rope to do this. Because 2021 is a year to get vaccinated in our state. And we're gonna be mobilizing thousands of workers and resource is to save people from this virus. Glad to be able to say entered today this second stage. Of this initiative. So today we're joined By some of the first of what may think of charter members of this partnership. Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson, Microsoft President Brad Smith. How's your permit? Any of Washington president Susan Mulaney? Seymour Community Health Centers President Seo where Helio realists and Jane Hopkins, a registered nurse and executive vice president for Sulu Healthcare, 11 99. Northwest. And I'd like to start with some comments about this effort. You've been listening to Governor Jay Ainsley with a number of updates on the vaccination process here in Washington State, Revco, a lot of information there. Certainly so he talked about six different different portions of this bill. Starting off with a vase. One B Now of the vaccine. Everybody who is 65 older is eligible immediately. And if you're 50 or above and you're part of a multi tiered household, maybe you still have some folks who are going to college and in your household or high school or something in your 50 or above you, too now are eligible. Governor also talked about ramping up the number of daily vaccine vaccines. It's so now about 13 to 15,000. They want to get that to 45,000 in the next couple of months and also increase those mass vaccination sites all across the state and make sure it's done in a timely fashion. And then I think perhaps the most important thing you just mentioned Bill was the Face finder launch today to determine your eligibility. Where you can go get those vaccines. So I think a lot of people will be going on the Department of Health website deal wage dot.
