That's the air is just got off the phone. Hey Paul, you ever heard a conversation where you start at the letter Z and just go backwards and that's the whole conversation. I just heard a whole lot of nothing. And yeah, he's going to be a decent quarterback, but if he get hit by one of the old defensive linemen, he'll be back in tea town as it offensive coordinator for Nick or whoever else they high after niggli stopped crying about the coordinator. The coordinated they got, he's run savvy. He run heavy and the reason Nick got him is because he know he don't have a quarterback. This year coming up. So leg and stop all that wine and crying and we want this OC we want this OC Nick said a few years ago. Did Barrett and don't. He's over with. The run is over. You can embrace it, believe it, disbelief. The run is over. And you can get on here every day and laugh at your own joke. Black hat club and all it is and what I'm thinking about it, you told the guy in the back, he needed to reach across and pimp slap somebody cousin in the black hair club. As far as I remember, he helps keep their women. I think legend just lost he is. So all that pimps are not in my guy. You just blowing smoke. And one more thing for you to let you go, Paul. "And so is it richton park or is it right in park? Well, we're about to find out from Linda. So Linda, which is it? It's a rich to the park. All right, richton park it is. I'll remember that. Yes. I just thought I'd call and let you know and your audience know today it would be Houston's birthday and if she would live, she would have been 59 today and she can't wait ten years ago. Yeah, February of 2012 just a terrible life. And on an emotional personal level. And she gave so much to so many, but boy, it was tough for her from day one, really. Oh yeah, it worked, but she seemed beautiful. I was wondering, I was wondering if maybe you could play, I will always love you. You have no doubt in two things good too. I would do that for you, Linda. It's a song, you know, funny. I think Whitney Houston has the greatest voice, but I never liked her choice of music. And I can't stand that record, but for you, I will play it. I will do that. One other thing I wanted to mention to you also, I had some friends many, many years ago when I was attending college open payloads and they had a band and together they accumulated a band and they were country. And they named the band the nitty Gritty dirt being I don't know if you ever heard of. I don't know, they had hits. In fact, their first hit, which very few people remember because it didn't do that well on the pop charts, but was a song called buy for me The Rain. Okay, 'cause I remember one of the guys, he said right next to me in the algebra class, we were going to marine valley community college. And he always talks about how they go to the garage at the end of the day and play nothing but Jane from music and I thought they were going to be like a sort of like Jane Brown music but when they came out it was country and I saw them on TV once and they changed the name from the nitty Gritty dirt band to the dirt band. So I don't know when that happened. So I just thought I'd make sure since you guys were talking about this country. When were you in college? I mean, it had to be an. Assist to get married in 69, so it was before 16 and let's get in like 60 might have been around 1969 when he was we were at class together 69 or 68. Somewhere around that time. Okay. The reason I asked is when they originally formed it was 1966 in Long Beach, California, and then they reformed it in 69. So probably the guys you went to school with were part of the reformed group. Oh, okay. I know they say it was namely the nitty Gritty dirt band. Right. I never knew what sounds on TV and they said they would have dirt bands. Right. Well, they had a big hit, mister Bojangles, which was a cover of Jerry Jeff walker, and that was around 1970, and that was just huge for them. Do you remember what your school friend's names were? You know, it was just this one guy that was in the thing. I can't remember what we said right next to each other and I held to request and the teacher she never stayed in the room. She was always out. So we got a lot of talking. Wow, that's what I can't remember what his name was at all. It's been so many years ago. Oh, of course it has. Now, there are probably a total of like 20 guys who had been in that group. Everybody from Jeff Hanna and Jim photo glow to Jimmy ibbotson and John mcewan. I mean, there's a Jackson Brown was even in that group for a minute. So a lot of people were, but like I say, when they around 68, that was clearly the end and then they reformed in 69. And I'll just bet you that your friend was a member of that reformation of the group. And then they had the big hit, mister Bojangles. Oh, okay. All right, I can't remember Zayn, but we were pretty young back in that. Yeah, exactly. Yes. Yes, although we didn't think so, did we? No, you know, I thought about the man. I wouldn't care if I could join a group may have one girl singing. Then I thought about what my mom was safe after for beauty. Yeah, I didn't even bother to answer. We were real tight, good friends. Yeah. All right. I can't remember his name. Yeah, so. Just for you. Just for you, I'm going to get you Whitney Houston, and I'll be grinding. I want to ask you what is it about what do you think you don't like? I love her voice, but I don't like the songs she chooses to sing. You know, she's not singing stuff that I like. So she's got a tremendous voice and of course, my God, her background for God's sakes darlene love was her godmother. You know, and of course her blood relatives are amazing. But for what reason when they got her into the studio in the 80s, the stuff that they chose, they were big hits, so obviously they did something right. But I just hate them. On TV and they just blew the TV up. Yeah. But that was years ago. I mean, years and years ago, it sounded so good together. Well, they did and when Natalie Cole did this will be. I loved this will be. I thought that was on the best records ever. And sometimes I just like the song. So no doubt Whitney Houston had a killer voice, but she just didn't sing songs I like. Oh yeah, okay, I could see that because a lot of people say the same thing about me. I love Janice Joplin, but a lot of people say, oh, I can't stand it. But I love her music. I love her singing. There you go. But there was just me. Yeah, but no, she certainly could sing. I just wish she was saying things I liked. But I will play you like anything, get a job and say, actually, that's not entirely true when she redid peace in my heart. That was a good record. And of course me and Bobby McGee, that was a smash record. Oh yeah, that was the best, right there, yeah. There was

"Leave your radar probably James those are the dogs yes from Harlem New York It was on George goldner's finds on gone That was their first chart record And why is it not a big hit None of their stuff charted R&B interestingly but that got to number 72 on the pop charts in 19 57 Yeah Richard blandon and many more in that group and I know they were wonderful and before we get back to Rick and Northern California who probably hated it Well we'll talk to Scotty in east Chicago who probably loved it So all right Scotty Rattle you kicking in that You're really kicking two of my back to back Guess who I saw today And asked me to be lonely And the dubs couldn't touch the channels but they was right close to him Yeah I thought they were great They were stable mates Yes Yes You see one you see the other That's right My sister called me to carry it on the news My sister called me and she grabs her husband's excess wedding Actually Britney Spears and exertion crash there We hadn't had to get locked up Good night but my sister called me this morning to tell me about he got lots of questions That's hilarious Now how long have you been locked up I don't know where they got married You did yesterday Yeah in California right Today And it just crashed We had a locking up Yeah he was married to her for 55 hours Oh well I guess he said there were no yet Well that's right And he felt that way He never got married again and he had been like a childhood friend of hers It wasn't somebody who was asking about camera to rear last night Yeah You know that girl was hitting me here a lot I don't know if she went with genius brown a little bit Yeah he hit her too but man I'll tell you He had it because he didn't watch the show That's right It's exactly going to be showing she didn't watch it He hit her That's right And I know I know when Dave was ripping her was running around But I didn't know he was married as a child Oh yes absolutely I didn't notice But now is it true that it's a motorcycle helmet in the head That's what the press said supposedly he did Well one of the deals still needed to hit it with his motorcycle him Yeah no that's a well-known story And as I say I didn't have to say that But they say she had all kind of brain issues anyway And Jane Brown hit in the head David Griffin because she had Marvin Gaye was going to do something to him about that Yeah no Marvin Gaye was really her protector And he was such a Michael sister to him Right And he was just broken up by this but when she was 11 years old They said that's when he's got into drugs after she there That's right That's true I will not do that Yeah well time wise it's true when she was 11 years old she was gang raped by three boys in the neighborhood And that's when the mic was headache started And everybody kind of discounted those migraine headaches but ultimately she had 8 surgeries and sadly died Edward Well how old was your dad Would you die 25 years old yeah When I was a child when they said David referenced a year with a motorcycle As well that shouldn't surprise you It's David ruffin He wasn't Well you know David wrote I've seen that boy Yeah Leafs are rolling Yeah And then he was worried because the guy was gone for two days with his car Right And I never could figure that dude out He was weird Well I think we're a lot of drugs involved with that too Yes it was yes it was You know so I just had a thank you Riley But keeping due up a laugh And I really appreciate you with that story about to rear because I didn't know that she went through all that Oh yeah And by the way not only was David ruffin married with three children but he had another girlfriend in Detroit And James Brown they said when he was like you know he was 12 years old and 14 years old When they were going together And he got mad at her He hit her because she didn't watch his shoe Right no absolutely And he was that was very public But in addition to the motorcycle helmet supposedly David ruffin hit her over the head with a hammer Oh wow Yeah But I don't know About the temptations Paul Williams which is the one who committed suicide with me I think so He shot himself in Detroit in the garage His wife told us life is going to kick his car She heard a shot He killed himself Yeah Yeah And now Johnny H he committed suicide right Well I'll get to that in a minute but whatever Well maybe we'll get to that But with Paul Williams remember something before the suicide the reason that he retired was he had a lot of health problems So we had last time I've seen them Paul we've reached out to sweat in addressing room Yeah You look real sick of so I don't know what we're doing with him He was sick and he would break out I mean he wasn't even on stage yet He was just sweating Right And so I think that suicide and some people wondered if it was a suicide I assume that it was And I think that it was probably he was married He hurt that thing up If I say he went out to the garage And his issues was liver And that can cause all parts of all kinds of problems So some people said foul play and all that But I think that you heard that too but I never did We got to wonder about Johnny ace in that Johnny somebody made it sound Johnny hits gone Right You know who made that after Johnny's dad just leading me to some Chinese gone Yes And I remember that well beretta Dillard on Savoy in 1955 And he was very young when he died I don't remember too much about him but he was with Bobby bland and junior Parker on the same lady I think Well yeah and the problem is when you're dealing with Don Roby there's all sorts of stories you're going to hear But there were other people on that Bill who swore that it was as it was told but there were some people who thought I don't know about this So he was all for young too wasn't he Yeah Oh absolutely And he's had on Christmas with new year's Yeah it was Christmas And in Christmas Day in 1954 and he was born in 29 So he was a young guy My mother and they were crazy about him He was wonderful And he made the song called the clock and pledging my love My love was the big hit of course I loved it Yeah and I heard my mother used to play that all the time Absolutely And so some were saying in fact some of the musicians there said that he was waving a gun around the table and someone had said be careful with that thing And he said it's okay It's not even loaded See any pointed at himself with a smile and hit it and that was of course it Oh wow Big mama Thornton ran out of the room screaming Johnny ace just killed himself And so that was here That was the biggest thing That was way bigger than miles and gate when Marvin Gaye spoke to fathers both here And that was the thing back in the day Well he.

"And you didn't wake up the heat and making mistakes that they needed you to make because they didn't have it. They were missing open shots again. They couldn't find their offense. It was up to the Celtics to continue to find them. Take advantage of a vulnerable heat defense. That's exactly what they were. They're a step behind. Something to get in those files, they're in the penalty, what? Four minutes into that third quarter. And to me, that was the beginning that this others needed to build that big league going into the fourth quarter. And I see people, I see people calling for a brown apology cam. I mean, this isn't the same guy. You just keep saying it over and over and over. What's apologize for what? He was completely to blame for the start. Completely, every time he does the same thing, goes right in Oladipo and Oladipo is ready to punch it out. And he almost completely derailed them. You go down by double digits there, which they didn't because they couldn't make a shot. Sometimes they actually squandered their transition opportunities. But especially with the postseason he's been having. Don't you think he's been watching clips, especially within this series? See what night to do on the ball? And this was in the case of being aggressive and slip a few times. He was turning it over before he crossed the free throw line. He was running. He was driving into the traffic. It didn't make any sense. It was like you were seeking a foul every time. He needed to turn it around just to overcome that awful first half. So I guess credit to him for that, but this is not an apology cam night for what? He was like, rarely isn't an apology cam for any player. It needs to be extreme. We tell like it is. If he has a bad game, we tell it like it is. He has a good game. It happened. If he's inconsistent, we tell like it is. If he has a bad first half, we say it. If he has a good second half, we say it. I don't know if this guy came late. I've already talked about Jane Brown was a huge part of that second half run. Him and Tatum got hot, and they stretched out to lead. And I also said that Al Horford and Derek white kind of kept him in the game to begin with because those two players were no shows in the first half..

"I'm sure he's going to be frigging sore and he'll have to ice it and he's got whatever. He's got everyone's here gotten a Charlie horse on their thigh before. It hurts. You stiffen up. It's not awesome. It's all pain tolerance, you know? They'll play. Whether it's Marcus, whether it's Jane Brown, I mean. But with brown, it's more of a with brown, I'm worried he's in his head because the hamstring you're always worried is the next stride gonna be the one where I get that pop and that's gonna knock me out. And if it's in the back of your head, it's really hard to kind of play free 'cause you're always gonna be going in about 70%, 75. If you feel it tug and you feel it pulling a little, it was like, is this the one that's gonna let it that's gonna make it go? So if that was bugging him and it's been bugging him and it was in the back of his mind, I kind of get it. We haven't heard from Brown yet, so we don't have an injury update as far as that's concerned. Rob falls are okay, I think. John will let us know tomorrow. Yeah. Yeah. Rob's rubs, rubs, rubs, you know, got a bruised ding ding. But he'll be all right. Yeah. Oh, he's fine. Don't worry about that. Don't worry about it. Honestly, it could have been a lot worse seeing some of the are you guys, you got your injury updates, you guys. Yeah, you got you in your updates, right? And people, it could have been a lot worse based on what when we saw Marcus smart running up the court. And we saw rob Williams just writhing and we weren't sure right away what it was. So I think they came out of this best case scenario, I guess, based on what we saw. Yeah, bruises. This is a playoffs. You're playing a physical team. You get knocked around a little bit, okay? You got kicked in the stack. Yeah, you got need in the thigh. It happens, okay? You just gotta go Charlie horse in the shoulder. You know those things happen. You gotta punch back. You know, a little physicality out there..

"It's time for you to dial in So 888-876-5593 that's 88 88 But a note if you're listening on Friday night we really appreciate it but it's a replay so do not call however Monday night Yeah I'm yours So let's see what's going on here I got a couple of first time callers and oh yeah our bumper stumper right now since it's bumper summers a to Z and we're concluding the letter W tonight Well it is a female vocalist one word starts with a W so who is she All right 888-876-5593 We got married She's a first time caller in Ohio Illinois a hello Mary Hello rally How are you All right thanks for calling Okay I'm not calling about the bumper stumper I'm gone about the Chicago question Okay what do you think I think the special Olympics Well that's a nice guess That's not right but that is a lovely guess Oh you kidding Nope sorry about that All the way around I'm glad you called and I hope you'll do it again Okay I will Thank you Appreciate it All right so let's see what do we have with mark the first time caller and he is in Chandler Arizona all right Mark thanks for calling Well I don't know if this counts as cheating because I actually heard this a couple of months ago During black history month and I don't have the specifics I don't know if it was a musical or it was some type of not Broadway but some type of play performance that was all black One thing I don't recall so it was a musical I did hear it Like I said it was recently a black history month a couple of months ago So I heard it on I don't know if it was BE Z but it's kind of common to me as that Well it's a great guess and the first known play by an African American actually dates back to 1823 It was James Brown king's shot away William wells Brown did the escape a leap for freedom in 1858 And that was the first one that was published but I think probably what black history month was referring to was Angelina grimke who did Rachel And African American theater flourished in Harlem in the 1920s and 30s especially and there were black theater companies that emerged in Chicago as well as New York and D.C. Paul Robeson who later was banned for being a communist but was American's foremost black actor at that period of time Garland Anderson probably that would have been about 1925 appearances was the play That was probably the first one on Broadway But the first hit on Broadway was mulatto in 1935 So it wasn't a big field production Well there were a ton of zoo things but you're talking about white people You know all of them All of the minstrel show us for instance and there were a lot of minstrel shows in the early 1900s And that some will say well that would be the roots of African American theater The problem is they were written by whites and initially they were whites in blackface And they were performed for white audiences So after the Civil War you started to see the seeds of it and really it was the 20th century before you were seeing things that were written produced acted entirely by African Americans but the first one known was Jane Brown his king shot away in 1823 But interesting stuff I bet you what they were talking about on black history month was Angelina grimke because she was a dramatist and she did Rachel in 1916 and that was successful And not on Broadway per se but that was successful So I'm glad you called and I hope you're going to do it again Thank you very much Thank you Thank you You have a great evening You too Yeah I'm glad he brought that up because there are some wonderful stories about early African American plays and productions And of course like I say Paul Robeson who was he had it going on Let's just say that All right so 888-876-5593 88 88 rallies Stephanie by the way I heard a bumper She was the first but John quickly came in and said she won the only Scotty Jeff and Ken all knew it so all right Stephanie you were first Why'd you hear Hey It's the willows and the rings Yes So were they integrated No they were African American I don't think there was anything but like I say originally they were the dovers and that's when Bobby Robinson was in that group but later Tony Middleton was in that Wow I've got some pictures of them and I don't remember ever seeing anybody who was Caucasian Because I know there are a few there were a few integrated groups Oh yeah There were a ton of them But originally the Martin brothers Richie Davis John Thomas Steele They were the first group of it And then when Bobby Robinson left it but that's when Tony Middleton came in And sadly church bells may ring which was just wonderful What was the hit of course the diamonds cover And the problem is you know in terms of originally on melba who wrote it and you know it's listed as willows dash craft I don't know if that's Morty or not but in any event I wonder if they got some royalties I would hope so but I would doubt it Yeah Hey I missed the original I missed a trivia question that everybody's been trying to answer but I'm wondering if I can have a trivia category Yeah absolutely My husband and I we've been on we got our kids got us a smart TV and they're getting us into the 21st century And we've been binging on bandstand And I'm wondering if you can do an American bandstand trivia Who was the original host when it debuted in 1952 That would be bob horn All right we got our winner Yeah I just want to say when really quick thing I know and I'm going to hang up is it's trivia and I got people but I wanted to just say I know like Dick Clark like everybody else has foibles and his strengths but the one thing I always have kind of mixed feelings but really appreciative now after not seeing him for years and he's been gone for ten years now but the one thing that really pumped up my admiration was when after he had a stroke he went on and hosted the New Year's Eve celebration in his speech was impaired but he went on anyway And I just thought that was amazing So that's all I wanted to share okay All right yes there's many different viewpoints about that Trust me But thanks for calling All right And yes Stephanie is a winner so add to her cash for sure All right so Gary wants radio trivia We're going to do that and Carol and planes think she knows about our.

"In promoting these artists careers alongside his own. He worked closely with harriet to figure out how they could china spotlight on his favorite artists. Brown's band assange wilson she day main condition sharon jones and the debt kings e anthony. hamilton. Shocker khan and misty copeland the very first person. That interview was esperanza spalding. And she was not famous like she is now. She would not gotten a grammy yet. One thing about prince that he saw he was a visionary and he could see who she was but hadn't become yet and i really think that was an incredible gift of his. He could see laser sharp into future in them wondered. But why don't you see this. Why don't you understand this before each interview. I would go into his dressing wherever we were and he would come in and we talk about the arts and he would tell me his thoughts about the artist and he would tell me what he hoped. I would get out of the conversation. So this is the fascinating way of working. I may make sense but again is with prince. Along the way as we games interviews we started talking about. What are we going to do with this material. My background was magazines. So we got to the point of. Why don't we make bags and so many ideas of just endless giant ideas. But we'd say and make magazine that he came up with the name intelligence again try to into that philosophical spiritual high spiritual life and creative. It's time that he said you go the magazine. Harry you just make. He just believed it could happen and it is true. We did make things happen but we got into ferocious debates about financing so anyway we didn't make the magazine but what we did was interview all these incredible people. There's a theme. That's emerged through so many of the interviews that i've done of prince explicitly wanting to support an amplifying promote black women. And i'm hearing that in so many of the stories that you're telling about who he was surrounding himself with in this period who he had opening for him even requesting that you are the one to write the cover story for ebony. Can you talk a little bit about what you observed in that regard yes Prints had tremendous regard for women and particularly black and in elegant kind of wet. I have no idea who he was dating. Because you just didn't know that. But you knew that. He had female friends that he had. He held him very highest theme. He likes for women to dress up. He loved elegance and glamorous and intelligence so he surrounded himself with very smart beautiful women and beauty not in one particular wet from share. We j. fierce black woman with a bald head to mystical but missing could jump on a baby grand piano on point. Everyone was incredibly dynamic. There's a dj rashida very close friend of his who. "He was the way what's are so. That was detained. So this is the made that jump with l. Hawks the war paint jake again taking the initiative to make sure the job gets done even disobeyed orders to do that. What happened after d day. When did they wrap things up there. And where did they were the army syndrome next. Well after they recovered from the bridges they they pretty much for security around. Well no they had to take care of it. So the whole five 506 six regiment had to take any was part of that attack but they were pretty much security for regimental headquarters. So they weren't like the band of brothers actually attacking in there. They did get engaged but after that they pretty much performed security patrols things like that until he went back to england and then they did the market garden jump. And as i mentioned the demolition platoon had three bridge mission so each one of the sections was assigned to bridge now. An interesting story of that is the bombing of the bridges if you watch the movie band of brothers and win they're out there on this flank attack on this one town. I think moves whatever. His name is gets captured recovered. The scene ends with them looking at dark. And they see this bombing of eindhoven. Well that's the bombing of the bridges and jake's lieutenant yowen jake saw this mr smith fly over and drop flares. Jake recognize what was gonna happen. He was illuminating bridges for bombing. Run and jake told all his guys to get into bunkers the lieutenants telling him no gosh out here and defend the bridges and there was a tank a german tank off into the distance. Jake said no one's going to be attacking this bridges while the germs are bombing. It trust me and he goes any of you guys who don't wanna get killed your because you didn't tell them builder like anyone. Don't give getting the bunker where they all gonna bunker now the other two sections when you get it in you. Get the story in Warpaint they did. As they were trained they stayed out and the counter to strafing or bombing issue fire and hair so these guys got one grandmoms inside machine guns and they're just throwing bullets up that don't do anything and several of them. There were so many of the got killed and wounded by the bombing both. Nco's were killed. Many of the soldiers were seriously injured. That what was left of that platoon was rolled up under jake mini. Jake had the only section that was left intact. And that is when he goes from being section sergeant to the platoon sergeant. Now he's from going from buck. Sergeant his discharge. He was a staff sergey. That was a platoon sharpton day and then warmer will replace jacobs sections sergeant right. That tells you like okay. He disobeyed the order of the author. But that was the right thing to do. He saved his section. And what's left of the others. Probably made another squad and if they actually sent the officers away they distributed the officers throughout the rest of the battalion or regiment and remove the platoon shark gave him other duties. Basically the on. Jake's guy's going to keep everybody luck and that's something else. When i met rags man cohen robert coat your he. He was captured in normandy and spent the war as appear. W and it wasn't until somebody radio show tracking down and or his son tracked down any way they egos to a reunion start selling and when i talked to him about joining the filthy thirteen he said jc only when he remembered but he goes a new. That guy was little gonna live there when when you talk to these guys these world war two vets. There's always like one guy in the company that you know he's gonna make it through and he's blessed with common sense but usually gets them busted because they're smarter than most of their leaders and are tough as hell and that was jay and bob kohn said you know. Well look at jake. I'm like that guy's gonna win the metal bar okay. That's the kind of person. Jake was okay. So after operation market garden gig joined a group called pathfinders and these guys they would jump in ahead of the main airborne body to set up things like beacons to guide the rest of the planes in there were dropping off the main airborne body. Half of the filthy thirteen joined him on the head and they get dropped into the battle of the bulge and then jake ultimately he ended up with four combat jobs which is really rare for a paratrooper after the war ended. After that. what happened in jake. What what happened to jake after the war. Well by the time they get to occupation in Zella switzerland day get discharged on points and they go home now. District ego points and talk kick miller career soldier stuff that wounded enormity. He had a lot of points so they sent him home. And the company commander who jane brown at that time picks jake db the acting i art. So here's this guy who they will jay brown funny story in the book about when they're in the new york port of embarkation and jake astill a private not even private kurds plan and they tell him you got to promote this dining says jake already a downtown drinking and andy brown says they can send me to leavenworth the prison but before i ever promote skied a private g brown end up promoting this guy all the way to i charge of gay acting. I charge is discharge listed him as staff target which was the rank of platoon charging after the war. He travels around raises. Hell and stuff like that till he moved back to. Ponca city falls in love with a good hispanic woman and she knows his troubled background. And jake says look he said. My problem is drinking. And if i get and fight when i'm not drinking and so he says i give that up and give it well. So here's jay. He's given up drinking a lay. Preacher now I did lit world. War two lifts history at what of the guys had just read the book and he says is it true. This hellraiser became a lay preacher. I said yeah. Was it. So i told jake that he says take had had a comeback. He his real calling should have been a standup comic. It goes yeah. He said next time you're asked that question. He said tell them this. I spent the first thirty five years of my life so in wild oats and the rest of my life praying for a crop failure classic. Jake yeah yeah leads. That's that summed up his life right there. So what do you hope. People walk away with thinking after they. They finish your books about the filthy thirteen. And jacob niece well several things first of all. Take it as a entertaining story. Okay now if you're caught up in discipline and stuff read between the lines. Why do they not kick this guy out. Why do they keep promoting him. Why is he made the first ardent. Of the pathfinder wisey made acting first sergeant regimental headquarters company because he's a leader. The only thing he had problem was was saluting and staining formations in his mind. He's looking like if this doesn't contribute to my training for the war it doesn't make sense but he also is going to the limit any did and he got away with it because they were trying to rationalize with murray for all those people's at ida kicked him out we have lost the war. Okay i was a company commander. I'd had a hard time out. You know as much as i'd gate hard time protecting that guy. We got along. He you know he would have probably obeyed. What i'd only do anyway because i would have been rational with him like in canada but he would definitely as teams are Affords because there was guys like.

Is the players several nodded and again. I had had enough experience with tennis players. The men's side as well as women's side to know that. I couldn't really take that to the bank. That wasn't sure that anyone would remember that by the end of the tournament makes phone calls talk to the ages of tongue. Sure enough we get toward the end of the tournament and we get through semi final final day. Venus one hundred seventy and about two hours after the semifinal match my phone rings and it's venus tonight had a good relationship work done some other things. But i took the call and she says what time are we on for grand slam committee meeting. Not one word with her her agent or anyone else since the top ten player meeting the weekend before the tournament started. So this tells you a lot about venus. Williams that often is not appreciated or understood she did not forget this mattered to her and she initiated the contact woman also among the next morning nine. Am let's meet. you know. Eight forty five on the lawn and you don't have a check going has all make some introductory remarks and then i'm gonna turn it over to you. I think it'd be great frontier from you so the next morning we go in and i i let tim phillips. Who is the chair at the time. I'd like to bring venus with me. And he was delighted. Fine i think it was a little trepidation probably. I don't think a player had ever come into a grand slam committee meeting before venus. And i walked down the ol- england offices and go into the room and there were twelve. Representatives of grand slams. Share some vice chair from each of the grand slam the chief executive Around the table. I started talking about how thought tumblers right now made the economic arguments the research we've done and all that i thought was the morally right thing to do for roland. Garros wimbledon to join the australian. Open and i turned it over to venus and to my surprise. I didn't know exactly what you'd say she started by saying. Thanks for having here Can i ask you all to just close your eyes for a moment. Stunned me everyone else. So everyone close their eyes and listen and she gave his beautiful impassioned. talk about. Magin yourself a little girl growing up dreaming one day of being a pro tennis player and hoping you'd have the same opportunity a little boy would have and then you grow up and you realize you don't have it. I won't repeat hose off speech but it was at a very emotional level and it was clear that she felt deeply about this and that it had an impact on her and she was worried about future generations. Everyone opened their eyes head of discussion airplane and and that was it was stunning and and we left. So that's that's what happened in two thousand five amazing amazing and i just wanted to mention a women. Could jane brown grimes. Because she was the only other woman in that grand slam board meeting that day. Besides venus williams she was a nonvoting member of the board as she was the. Usda's first vice president. She went on to be president if the. Usda for a couple of years and she is now eighty years of age and is currently working on her phd thesis with cambridge university and the thesis examines women's tennis from start of the open air in nineteen sixty eight up until wimbledon in two thousand and seven on a on a big prong of that is equal prize money in beijing king in all the rest of it so yeah just wanted to give her a mentioned because she sounds pretty cool so that happens wimbledon two thousand and five. Venus williams wins the title. Anything show. okay. This thing's happening now right. But wimbledon didn't budge budge. Spite of the fact that the prizemoney difference at this stage is pretty much nominal In two thousand and six The final year that prize money was on equal for the for the win. At wimbledon there was a thirty thousand pound difference. It was six hundred and twenty five thousand verses. Six hundred fifty five thousand. That's four point five percents so it's a matter of principle at this point. You know it's interesting. You know. Billie jean king in the first clip we heard from her saying it's not about the money it's about the message it will this point. They are whether they acknowledged the no this specifically doing it in order to send. The message is absolutely not to do with money. Everybody's agreed on that. Except that the powers that be are saying the message we want to send is that you'll know equal which i find really extraordinary and and you know the excuse. They gave at the time. Because i looked back on this. Because of the fact that all the happening still hadn't been equalled. They tried to say the they they wanted to be fair to the fact that because men play best to five they couldn't play doubles as easily and and be earn money from that. Actually women were taking away more money from the tournament because they're able to play both events. That was the kind of reasoning. They were giving. I mean i. I remember that was when i was at my most furious about all this because of the nominal nature of it. If you've got a really strong conviction and a reason for it. That's one thing i still don't agree with it but at least you're making a position that i can understand where you're coming from this as you say. This was just digging hails in a not being prepared to to be to do the right thing and and i couldn't have it anymore eight myself. Yeah we'll know could anybody. Because 'cause wimbledon budging so whether that was a conversation as if a power rangers type right let's get. Listen you adapt over time. There's there's a moment in candid you memoir where your record collection gets gets nicked. She's using some british that counts can. Yeah can we talk about what was in that record collection. Oh i had i mean. I was a massive hip hop fan in nine hundred at cub every week. Doing the running man in the clubs and learn dance from hip hop videos on mtv. So i had big daddy kane. I had public enemy. Had de la soul ads. Sweet tia had queen latifah mony. Love like a massive biz. Markie all the all the hip hop giants of that time had collection on vile. That was my job. I was a mad hypothesis and fun. I bought their last album to sure domestically molest definitely got their last. You know what. I bought it. I was listening to maybe not. Maybe i'm wrong labor. 'cause i had. I had a whole cache of downloaded music from back in the day when used to buy music and download it though. I've seen the downloaded stuff. So maybe that's okay. That's probably what you were. That was favorite albums. i used to be in dallas. Oh so i have the same hair in fact kind of reverted back to this. I had this haircut when i was nineteen. And now i've got again forty seven thou- i-it's it's so pulling it off. Thank you yeah. Three behind rising is just unparalleled so creative and and insane martha we will. Yeah yeah toco dancer so we have to talk about your grandmother. Because she's such a big part of of the book and the book starts out with this really great kind of like historical overview of nigeria and how colonialism shaped your family and all really starts with your grandmother and she's fascinating character. 'cause she's married to this very important chief. She is the first of his many wives. She's the favorite of his wife. So can you tell us a little about about your connection to her and Yeah y. y. A man in love would have dreamed up a gift better suited to his bride. My gratitude philip among the duke looked so of congratulatory. My pleasure curry glared at him. On behalf of women everywhere who longed for more than token gestures of force affection that fact cliffs kind didn't waste time on matters of the heart lords and ladies or those who aspired to become them selected their unions with cold practicality minds were muddied with emotion but with visions of titles and dowries and states and social connections. Khloe was delighted not to belong to a world like that. Mrs york clapped her hands together now. A suburb tori. The duke's face displayed a comical. Look of alarm. I don't think must join us. Mrs york's hans flapped like a frightened bird the ladies. We're about to have cakes and sandwiches. We were about to discuss epistolary structure in eighteen. Th century french novels. Philip amendment never meant to interrupt factly said with haste must stay and in fact since of you mrs york two arms about the room driving her guests into the dining room like a shepherd herding sheep khloe and cliff were both caught in the flow. This was her chance to liberate her beloved park. But i she needed an excuse to disappear an adorable ferry reason. She released ticket from the large wicker basket. The calico kitten dotted between boots and beneath petticoats with a formidable missus. York gave a dramatic shriek in response. Tickets scaled several curtains in search of an open window before darting out of the dining room and flying off down the corridor as though his tail were afire. There was no sense looking for the kitten strands of calico for and unfortunate pawprints on a velvet curtain indicated. Piglet had already found an open window and was well on his way home. Khloe hurry to lift her family painting from the wool and carried it behind a shinwari folding screen in the corner. Cutting the canvas free was not an option. The replacement must look identical to the original. And besides she would damage an object that meant they smart quickly. She lay the frame face down and removed her tools from the basket. Marjorie had drilled khloe on mounting and on mounting canvases until her fingers were calloused and she could perform the maneuver in. Her sleep came to grips off came. The backing out came puck and family. She rode it into a scroll the size of her forearm and tucked it into the basket before stretching the forgery over the wooden frame. The was the tricky part. There was no way to attach the painting. Without hammering the grips in place. She must do so in silence. If she placed only one grip on each side and lined each one perfectly with the holes it had come from she hurriedly returned it to the wall as long as it stayed there. No one would notice the imperfect craftsmanship and if one day someone did notice that was none of chloe's concern fair cliff would be the one who had to explain the shoddy frame. She did not feel sorry for him. A tool this was not his painting to give away for that alone. she could never forgive him. She ran to open the door before anyone noticed it had been shot and strode past the dining room to the front door without taking her. Leave from the guests by now. Fact and philip were exchanging romantic words with all of the other ladies hanging on every utterance. Anyone realize she had failed to return doubtful. If anything the ladies would assume jane brown had slunk off in mortification her throat pre-cooled she would never know what the other ladies thought of the current novel. But chloe didn't need reading circles she was a winchester they had each other which was more than enough keeping her face down. She headed along the front walk toward the first carriage in the queue only when she glimpsed red curtains and a pair of leather gloves on the books did she lift.
