I mean, if a lift driver shoots a passenger by accident, there liability could be huge. But here's where it gets ridiculous lift says there are many items that can be considered weapons and actually stun guns and tasers, and I'm not kidding slingshots. So you can't even have a non lethal weapon in your car while you're driving for lifts. I don't drive for one of these rideshare companies. We talk with a US Senator Martha mcsally earlier this morning about the government shutdown which isn't appear to it will end anytime soon at least not until President Trump gets the more than five and a half billion dollars. You once for a wall on our southern border frustrated with is I think most Americans most zones agree that we need border security, and that does include barriers Sonos a little bit about the border. And what's needed is? Yuma county sheriff Leon Wilmot who's the chairman of the southwest border sheriff's coalition sheriff not joins us. Now, you're not Johnny-come-latelies on this issue, by the way, you are just serving your second term as elected sheriff. You started with the Yuma county sheriff's office back in the eighties. Yes, sir. I sure did those uh station here in the Marine Corps and working as a reserve officer went on wasn't performing my duties with the Marine Corps. Gotcha. All right. So do you agree with Martha mcsally that? Are you one of those Arizona's she says believes we need a physical barrier. Well, I will tell you that every sheriff along the border has said that you have to tailor it to geographic needs. And Yuma was a prime example of. Yes, we did need a actual physical barrier to complement the rest of the technical infrastructure technology, boots on the ground to be able to combat the situations that we were dealing with back in two thousand five two thousand six when we were the worst in the nation for local law enforcement. We've seen a ninety one percent reduction in crimes that the transnational criminal element was exploiting because of the poor snus of our border. So it's gotta be. A situation where they're engaged with the local communities and local law enforcement boots on the ground to have an effective resolution to what's needed. And that's what we have always said and the president's standing up for what the boots on the ground of our homeland security partners have said that they need it most particular areas, we're talking with Yuma county sheriff Leon Wilmot what what are the biggest problems. You're seeing now with the border is it is it the drug trade. Is it human trafficking is it is it really a lot of families coming across looking for asylum. What's the biggest issue right now? Well, there's two issues that were facing right now, obviously, the family NS for the immigration side of it for our border patrol in icy are all partners and for us on the local level as well. So sheriff's throughout the United States is the the transnational criminal organizations smuggling these large amounts of hard narcotics into our country. It's a devastating argues us right now. And you know, the one of the biggest problems that we're seeing in our boots on the ground down. Here told us is that, you know, Congress's run on a continuing resolution for the past ten years. And the unfortunate thing is that when when they continue to do this type of activity they've not seen an increase in their operational funding because they never adopted a budget during the last ten years to be able to fun or federal partners adequately to be able to do their job. "I'm Jamie west with three things you need to know right now Air Force One ready to carry President Bush's casket on his final trip to the nation's capital this morning. The forty first president will lie in state there until Wednesday. A man convicted of killing two young girls in Sierra vista in nineteen sixty seven and released on home arrest in two thousand fifteen is back in prison the parole officer for sixty seven year old William half reportedly found an eight year old girl sleeping at his home. Last week KTAR is on the economy. Arizona's projected to I've added seventy two thousand new jobs by the end of this year. A new report from a issues w p Carey school of business. Also predicts seventy one thousand new jobs will be added next year. You're never more than fifteen minutes away from today's top stories on Arizona's news station. KTAR news. KTAR in-depth and those job numbers. Are why we have invited Arizona economists Jim rounds? Join us here on Arizona's morning news. But Jim I want to start with something else. I the Dow now up four hundred sixteen points. This is a pretty it's one of the biggest surges I've ever seen at the opening bell. And it's because Trump and Gijon ping of China have said, all right? Let's put this trade war on hold for a few months. Your thoughts on all that. Yeah. It's incredible. And there's two things I look at when there's a big jump in the stock market one. Is that something that's maybe some temporary enthusiasm or two is something that's going to last and I feel like we've been going through these ebbs and flows with these trade discussions. But all of a sudden, we're resolving the NAFTA issues or whatever they're gonna call it next to resolving issues with China, and that'll be more lasting unless something blows it up. You know, politics, always have that chance. But I think that this is going to be more permanent. So this is great. I actually asked this of the president of the Arizona chamber last week about the governor's trip to Mexico and this new deal that will replace NAFTA. If this is where the president has really done his job and been that tough negotiator and gotten some things done, you know, through some pretty tough negotiations. Yeah. And and it's hard to tell you know, politics is like a pendulum you always have to make sure you don't burn your bridges because it always wings back. And in this case, I was afraid that maybe things we're gonna be stuck on one side. But it seems like things are coming back on these economic issues. And that's what we want right now, we want this expansion to go on another two or three years that we can get that out of it. All right. Speaking of the expansion, how about this seventy two thousand new jobs when two thousand eighteen is all said and done according to the w p Carey school of business at ASU. And now they're talking about a similar number for two thousand nineteen. The those are pretty good numbers. Jim. Yeah. Yeah. They are in in. What you want to think about is? We have about seven million people in the state. Around three million jobs. So you wanna be growing between two and three percent for the state that puts us close to that number the greater Phoenix area is probably going to grow by about three and a half percent. So a little bit more. So it's in that range of what you'd want to see in this particular expansion, the same kind of range that we look at when we talk about GDP numbers and US numbers that range for Arizona. Tune out to three and a half percent is solid. And that's what we're gonna hit. What's driving all that growth? Well, we have a lot of good economic opportunity here. It's not just people coming here because of the sunshine. That's what it was like decades ago. Now, we're working on building the economy, we're adding higher-value job jobs when you had that high wage job, you add another medium wage job because people have to spend in the economy and the money circulates. So we're finally doing things well in it's amazing at the margin. When government gets involved in they do things. Well, it can lift the economy. But then when they do things poorly. It can push it down right now. We're doing it right near Zona. All right. There's Arizona economist.

Count me as one of these people that thinks that the the the goal line keeps moving and that doesn't necessarily help the accusers case if. I want to be heard to well, I don't really want to be heard in public to. Well, we should have an investigation. I like this. You could certainly look at it and say, I'm sure there's some validity to her concerns. And you could also look at it and say, wow, it looks like they're trying to drag this thing out as long as possible. The guy we were talking about yesterday. Mark judge his. I disagree on this to a certain extent where I say this is not about finding out. What happened that night? The Senate Judiciary committee has no desire to find out. What really happened that night? They are looking for cover to vote for or against cabinet on. That's what they're looking for. Now. I think you're right. And if there's enough plausible deniability, they can cause I still believe I don't think they've peeled one Republican off. I still think they're fifty two boats. You know, why we're so cynical? Don't you buy because they made us that way. Man. He really did. They tell me something that happened during the hearings that made you think that they were seriously concerned about his background or anything or they were just up there. Punt vacated speechifying for themselves. Yeah. No, what I thought was really interesting was when Chuck Schumer said, hey, we can't we can't trust the judiciary committee to investigate Brett cavenaugh because we know the Republicans are gonna vote for him. And I'm like, well, you can't trust them because we know you're gonna vote against it's it's a foregone conclusion. This is kabuki theatre in in Washington DC where you have to go through this process where everybody feels that everyone was heard and we took everyone's concerns very seriously. And then we're gonna vote exactly how we were gonna vote. All along. Anyway. All right. Well, if you get sick of talking about just stop and wish my wife, happy, okay?
