How To Get on Podcasts as a Guest
"One of the most free questions. I get asked about podcasting is how do i get on other podcasts as guest and its frequent for good reason because people know that podcasts are powerful way to market themselves to get out there to be known. Nobody wants to be ignored. But how do you get on a podcast. You just use cold outreach. Do spam people in their inboxes. Asking to be on their podcast. What is the most effective way to regularly show up on other podcasts. Well i'm going to tell you share with you my system so you can lineup guest appearances for the rest of the year. First of all. I want to address something. That's very very important. One of the things. We all have to come to terms with no matter where you are in your entrepreneurial. Journey is understanding. Why you should be on a podcast. Not talking about the benefits here. i'm talking about. Why would a podcast host. Won't you on their show. You have to honestly answer that question for example. Take a look at some of the bigger podcasts. Out there W f by marc maron. Joe rogan the jordan. Harbinger your show. Why is elon. Musk being interviewed by. Joe rogan. Why did richard bring it on the dribble. your show. Why did president. Braga obama get on w. f. with marc maron. How did that happen. That cold email. joe rogan. No probably the other way around right so the first thing we have establish is the more value can add to an audience. The more likely it's going to be that you're going to show up on that podcast. Let me say that again. The more value you can add to an audience the more likely you will be a guest on that podcast so elon. Musk shows up on. Joe rogan because joe rogan knows. His audience wants to hear from him. He sought after the something here. There's something that he can offer. That makes it worth him trying to get him on the show. One of my favorite podcast interviews is with jamie fox on the tim. Ferriss show and tim for a shares that it took him years to get to the point where he knew jamie foxx enough to convince him to get on his podcast. He had to put a lot of work in a lot of time. A lot of sacrifice a lot of investment and. I'll talk a little bit about how he actually got jamie fox at the end and how relates to today's lesson. Why did tim ferriss go through. All that effort will because he knew the jamie foxx would be a brilliant episode who share incredible stories. He has a lot of value to add. So i want you to start thinking in that way. Yes we all are not jamie fox or president barack obama but we can add value to an audience and we could start somewhere we will have to start with the can show right. We can start with smaller podcast with audiences that are more niche that can really benefit from what we can offer but a lot of us get disappointed that. Hey i'm reaching out these podcasts. And they're not getting back to me. I can really offer a lot of value. Omar will one of the reasons why they're not getting back to us because they just never heard of you or they don't really have any kind of rough of what you can deliver so we're going to solve this problem immediately. One of the best ways to get on a podcast. If your brand new is to be noteworthy that means you have to show people that you can deliver for example if somebody wanted to get on a podcast and they just reached out by email and said hey podcast. I'm an expert at seo. I think i'd be really valuable to your audience versus somebody who says hey. I'd love for you to have me on your show an seo expert. I should talk about how. Google has become the dominant search engine and y. Here's a link to that ted talk hoover's opening the email whoever's reading the email whether it's the host or the executive system that works for the host. They have a lot more mature work with now. They have a reason to say. Yes they have a ted talk to watch and say. Wow this person's credible they really delivered Enough people in that room were willing to listen to this person. He commanded an audience. Might be worth having on the podcast so you have to really give them something to say. Yes. this is why your own content is really really important until you have a few great interviews under your belt where you can share those in your pitches then you need to shoot something else whether it's a youtube video whether it's a bestselling book up performance onstage. Give something to. The decision is easy. It's an easy s now. Our which is one of the ways you can do. This is one of the strategies. I used in the beginning where i literally would go to the pages of all the podcasts. I wanted to go on. I emailed them and Ask them to be on. And i gave him some materials to kind of look through to know that. I'm legit but a more effective way is what's called a warm introduction. Introductions are one of the best ways to get on podcast and it's the fastest way to get a. yes now. there's a few things you can do. Let's start with one of the easiest step step number one is do you know anybody. That's been on amy podcasts. As a guest. Look at all your friends on facebook on social your emails. Is there anybody in your network. That's been on a podcast guest. That knows that can vouch for you if so ask that person. Hey can you introduce me to that. Podcast you're on. A warm introduction is an easy way for them to say. Hey that gas was good and the recommending somebody. There's a good chance that somebody is going to be worth my time. This is why. I really emphasize the importance of building. Your personal network making friends in your industry because you can always help each other out vouch for each other and remember. I talked about how a lot of just don't know who you are. The more you network the more. You're well known. There are so many people. I know that are so good at networking yet. They don't have a best selling book. They are not a social media phenomenon. But if i say their name people know they are because they are great at networking. They're great at making friends in their space and people like that will never starve because they can always find opportunities because they know somebody. So get a warm introductions one of the best ways to get on podcast. Next piece of advice is your aim. Should be trying to get on five. Podcasts doesn't matter the size of the audience or how newer old the podcasts. Is you wanna get some rips. You wanna really understand the process and you want to deliver. Will you wanna do in those first. Five is be the absolute guest that podcast has ever had. I'm talking about study. This podcast study everybody. Who's in your niche or have spoken about the topics that you might talk about in the interview or in the podcast episode and cover things that haven't been covered address issues. Problems challenges that other people haven't addressed on the podcast before you want to be the most guests they've ever had you want to be the jamie foxx episode. Okay why because this is how you're gonna viral market yourself if you knock it out of the park. And you're the best episode for each of these. Podcasts podcasters listen to other podcasts. And the here episode the blake. I gotta get this person on my show and that really worked for me. I work super hard on making sure. I nail my first interviews. That i crush it that i really deliver value. It's my only goal. I'm not trying to promote products and services if the host talks about my websites or my products. That's great. that's fine. But i don't even mention the asking. That question is are any way people can reach out to you. I give out my e mail or give out my twitter handle and try to get the conversation to continue on those mediums. The point here is that you just got to really nail. This not only will help you with the viral marketing of a. But it's a great set of interviews that you can use as samples of your work when you reach out to other podcast to be a guest on. My next tip is make a list. Make a list of all the podcasts. You want to be on. And it's okay if you shoot for the stars and he may even wanna work to that list so like number. One is joe rogan number two. Is tim ferriss. Show whatever just you know naming names here. But you have your favorite podcasts or the best podcasts you want to be on and work your way down. you know. it's okay if that list is one hundred. Two hundred three hundred podcasts. And see as you know a a bucket list you know. I wanna cross these off. And i want to get through all the podcasts as much as possible. And don't forget new. Podcasts are being launched all the time. so you're gonna want to update this list but the list is great to have so you can track your progress and is literally just a spreadsheet on google sheets. You know the podcast name. The podcast host The link to the podcast. And then i actually have a column or linked to my episode. Once i'm on it when you're starting out on another quick tip. I have to say this. But i've noticed some people don't do this but when you're starting out when you're trying to get on other podcasts. Dopey a prima donna. Okay don't be too precious. A lot of people. Don't want to fill out forms. They wanna do pre interviews. They don't wanna do the initial chant. Sometimes they think well this established business successful This is beneath me and this podcast is not popular anyway. Why should i do this. Well you should do it because if you wanna get on the show. That's what needs to be done. There's no room for pride here. You want to get on the podcast. Go through the format. It's good for you helps you prepare helps you do your best when it's time to actually be on the podcast and you're on the road of the actual episode. You gotta earn your stripes. You might be successful in your own area in your own business. But you're entering a new world podcasting and you're nobody here. I don't want to speak on your behalf but if you're a beginner you are still earning your stripes. You're still proving yourself as good guest as a gray guesses a valuable guests so run through the steps in the is as needed. And sometimes you're going to have to do all these kinds of hoops and prepare and schedule months in advance before the episode of airs. The better podcasts. Actually you know. Have a pretty long lead time. Some of the bigger podcasts. I i've been on. They had four five six months of lead time. But as you know time flies so put in the work now so you can reap the benefits later.
'Soul' rivals the Pixar classics but might aim too high for the kids
"Pixar films are the most philosophical of the animation world and the fact that they deal overtly with existential problems or anxieties might sometimes trick us into believing they're better or deeper than they actually are in pixar latest soul a jazz musician voiced by jamie foxx suffers a near death experience. Just as he gets his big break. The movie is wonderful when it's dealing with the small pleasures and big disappointments of living on earth specifically new york city which it renders a feta fantastically semi realistic beauty but overall the movie is so ambitious so intent on reminding us every minute that it really is a work of big ideas that it ends up subverting its own charms the pixar masterminds often seem to think complicated is better or at least just deeper but to paraphrase the loneliest monk. They've been making the wrong mistakes. That's a drag. Because soul could have been a work of great joy. If it weren't peddling so hard to answer unanswerable questions about what happens to us when we die and what shapes our personalities in the first place
Jamie Foxx talks Pixar's 'Soul'
"A great movie out there now that it's the holidays called soul and its stars my friend care jamie foxx who plays a guy who definitely has sold has the fight to recognize it in some way and it's a also history-making jamie in your the first black actor who's fronting of pixar animated movie possibilities to pressure on to that is definitely. I got the whole black race back and i'm karen and baby but it's it's great great to have things like this man. It's great. I mean you think about what we've gone through this past year you know Humanity needs a shot in the arm of of sold goodness and happiness and smiles and a reminder that we live in a place especially in america that is is You know full of freedoms that in other places of the world we just don't have and so you know to be able to have something like this to be able to be an african american black man who's done in the first pixar film. We welcome it. I mean when i first got to l. a. In living color. You know. I didn't even know i didn't even know. Did black. people can run their own thing because when he was on living color. Weedon question it. We're just doing. It was the hottest you know how to show out there. And we will blazing these trails with the winds and everything like that and then going on from there to jamie foxx show was you know definitely Created by a black man. Myself and bentley kyle evans and so it's just a natural progression so this is one of the pixar is doing this and i accept that honor and honor. Yeh but it is. You don't want to screw up to you know you can't 'cause i got to be able to go back to the you after you got one chance you blew a jamie with with your kids. Were they kind of thrilled. That you in a pixar movie. Are you kidding me. Both of my daughters says daddy finally made it especially. My youngest is like dad. You you really really like you you in a pixar film because you know my youngest daughter. She didn't get a chance to witness all of the things that i'd done twenty five thirty years ago so for her. This is a big big big thing and so It was fun to be able to take them up to pixar. You know be able to To see the place and feel the spirit of this incredible company in these great minds and pete doctrine camping. Those guys. so it's been great. You will when you when you're doing that. Everybody thinks what a great thing. It probably takes a couple of hours for me to do the voice of this character and it takes forever. Doesn't oh man noah it's tougher than anything because you know i've always relied on my physicality Facial expressions will do a facial expressions first day. They were like Cut a jamie. We're not gonna see you. We need the voice. Oh okay la but they did record some of it. You know maybe You know the spirit of my my my movement you know was in the character but it was really a tough task. Wasn't something that they you just go in and in because it's pixar so it's elevated it's not like There's a brand. There's there's there's a there's a level there's a bar says so It was hard work

"Not crossed over yet. And Bradley. Wonderful observation. You are the same age. Alright? I just don't like I think of him when he was on growing pains, and I'm like I kind of feel like we were in the same place. You are not gross. Yeah. Growing pains, right? Yeah, he showed up on growing pains. He didn't. He was the younger he was like the ad on the two younger kids that showed up towards the end of that. Siri's Was he like the cousin Oliver of growing pains. Wonderful. Let's go to Jamie Foxx Academy Award winning actor Jamie Foxx, Bradley and Grant. You have to tell me whether he has crossed the Brimley Cocoon line. Is he older or younger than Wilford Brimley was when he made the eighties classic cocoon. No way I'm saying no way he keeps the guy just looks. Wait. He's If he is he's drinking from the fountain of Youth. If he's over, I'm saying No. Ah, God, this is hard because again, I think maybe he just has Eugene, but genes I'm going to say he is he's over. He's over. Grant's Under I say over, Brad gets the ding Jamie Foxx has crossed the Brimley Cocoon line, and he did it about a year or so ago. He's 52 years old going to be 53 in December. Oh, crazy. Yeah, that's crazy, right? We'll grant. I think we did pretty decently, which lost one, but we almost right, You know what? Hold on. No, no. Fordham has good time. All right. Well, thank you guys for having another show. I know things can be a little weird out there, and it's just nice to have a place to turn to listen to some crazy people Talk about bizarre stories, whether their celebrity.

And this is what he wrote on social Media. My beautiful loving sister Deandra has transitioned I say transition because you'll always be alive. "To bring together business leaders from the T he's got Shaquille O'Neal involved a loco Jay Gabrielle union, Jamie Foxx, and he's got some investors like backstage Capital coming on board. And they all are coming together to create some content. Give inspiration to any kind of know what I think we all can get something from a day like this. So super excited to hear your coming from shark tanks on Damon John. How would people sign up to go to it? Well, you can follow him on Instagram. It looks like they have a Facebook page so definitely on social media. There should be some information there. The articles actually enforce. That's how I found out about so If you Google, Daymond John Forbes will come up and all the information's there. It gives you a whole outline of what the day's gonna involve chance. The rapper is going to be involved, and it's really going to be like a big black party online and they're really gonna have the time with this. So make sure that you check it out on October 24 That was parable for today. I believe I saw something in Daniel said that they're going to be given out. $25,000 grants its wonderful Wow, that's awesome. Well, so Go on. I'm finding out more about this. People will definitely tune it in then for that, Yeah, And, you know, I think it's really timely and culturally smart to do this right now, because we've all been in the cove in doldrums for so long, and now is a great time to do something the lift people's spirits a little bit that it seems like the media is just so full of controversy and acrimony. Damon really stands out by doing something so positive so Kudos for him. He's a good guy. Well, he's a very good that well, you guys got to meet and we did an event with him last year at her. I'm our headquarters. So, Yeah. If anybody should be doing this or be doing this in a great way, it's definitely him. I couldn't talk a little bit about my new venture. Well, not so new anymore. I've lost the vicious feels new feels fresher today. Eels nukes to happen. It's hard to make progress and do it all yourself, but I'm not so much anymore. So I started an online video directory for small businesses. So Caroline has done an interview with me and Kenya's in an interview with me so I interview small business owners and basically ask them, what makes them special, indifferent, and then we have a conversation about why people should want to work with them and what they offered to their clients, etcetera. 10 15 minute videos, usually and then I have a website and a YouTube channel where I post these videos with their descriptions, and I am trying to get up to a critical number before I actually start advertising to the public to come and find people and hire them from these videos on the site, So it's a directory so there may be five business coaches, but you know what? Everybody does it different. It's amazing, and so I'm getting to that critical mass. Now I'm having so much fun doing it. The people of interviewing are fantastic. So I hope to be promoting it eventually. And I heart radio, but all over the place on I was thinking I just picked up, But I don't know. You know, Right now it's so anyway, one thing and you want to say that sales we have Joyce here I met this woman and I joined her Good lunch club, and she's like my own personal sales rep. Like she is telling everybody to come do it. Of you with me. It's awesome. Yeah, she's a champion. Spark plug. So many referrals and cells and video is where it's at. If you're not on video. Now you're nowhere. So check out fireside directory and you'll be thrilled. You'll be on video and it'll help you with your business. Yes, so enough about me. So I am excited to injured is heavenly part. I love your product. Any.

"But the big bass fans they're really going to try to appeal to our people that are digging into all this shit and they knew what they were doing when they put him up there but screen but is electra is Jamie Foxx. Electro, he's saying he's not going to be blue in this one. So is he coming back is the same electro that we knew from amazing spider man to What I what I think is here is a chance for. Sony and Marvel and five eighty. Two to show off that they can do everything better than you did it. and. By by taking this character. There's there's only one explanation to all of this is taking Jamie Fox and moving into Spiderman three is to say it's to show off that that's the only reason to show that I can do what you did and do better. and. But here's the thing. The picture that he posted showed three different spiderman are we to believe? From this picture. That Jamie Fox is read the script number one, number two are we to believe that they might be introducing the multi-diverse into the Spiderman Universe, which we're GONNA see in the doctor strange movie. But are we getting tobey? Maguire. Coming back into this are we going to get Andrew Garfield playing Spiderman again? Are they going to go to those links to introduce the multi-diverse Cute from questions there you asking if if the multi versus going to be part of Spiderman three or has Jamie Fox been privy to like the bigger picture. I think that second part of that statement is is is the true part. Is that. What's the big plan like? When you approach Jamie Fox and say, Hey, can you come back Spiderman three Jamie Fox has to be like why? Let me explain to you what's going to happen here's what's going to happen in the next five movies. That's also mentioned like he knows he's not going to be blue. Rose, what he knows what they have planned for him. So could this be just like another rendition of electro like I was thinking to myself like at first before I even read that like Oh maybe they'll just have Jamie Fox come back and play a guy that saying he's like a super villain named electro and he's actually dressed comic book accurate and looks ridiculous and it's just a cameo appearance. But Like you become a comic book accurate because because the blue electro was from the ultimate universe. I'm saying comic book six one six. Okay well yeah. I mean and that's a question as as all these things starts to get muddled around. Is What are we talking about? We talking about the six one six? Are we talking about bringing somebody I? There's so much that we don't know and and will it will it make sense at the end of the day? It will. It makes sense that the Indus Spiderman. Three. I don't think we're going to know. Much more than we know. Now at the end of Spiderman three, my big thing here is that. If the okay. We have an answer anything. It sounds like we don't even know what the fuck is..

So when I say if you ever hear me, just sort of absentmindedly refer to him as a colleague or Mia past collaborators friend. He also thinks he's a costar with Sharon. Sharon Stone. Oh, Sharon murder. Do you remember that time was it great? Somebody. This's a gun now reading these comments. Well, that wasn't Kanye is best, but I mean with a wack A double snakes beat in a white guy doing the beat. I don't blame him. Can you feel it low, Kanye like God? Oh, yeah. You want to go in a way so bad? And then what I did was nice to you, though. It was very nice, by the way, so I had moved spots to catch him right before he got in the door. He thought he was home free and then I move spots. Right after I do that. I'm like to my camera and like, Yeah, we got Kanye. We made a freestyle with our Web site name and this is what just happened. And why that's our Facebook question. Today? We'll dig into that when we return on, Don and Steve on my talk. Another lorry and Julia moment Pokemon Go has been a popular mobile games.

Jamie Foxx on his latest film 'Just Mercy'
"Is popcorn where we tell you what's happening at the movies and there's a great movie out right now for your c called just mercy that has Michael Jordan and then also this ask Jamie Foxx. Yes you're not from give it up now you either are or execute chicks you have to face. This is all right Jamie before I lose complete control interview which would be fine but you made a great movie and Jess Mercy you dead. I think this is a true story. True story I think this is the opposite is this is the most important movie I've ever done Yeah I got yes because of who it's about and what it's about Brian Stephen. A lawyer of WHO's played wonderfully about Michael Jordan. who his whole life is? A Journey is exonerating people that are on death row of wrongly accused and and when I met Bryan Stevenson I was blown away about how much he's done. And what is and it's been sort of under the radar so I applaud Michael Jordan for being the biggest star in the world But always coming back to the movies like this for our cultural for us to educate is to uplift us to give us hope and like I said it is the most important movie I've ever the and who do you play. Play Walter mcmillen Watson Watt's McDonald's amendment south in in Alabama who own pulping business chop down trees for living on his way home on a country road he gets pulled over by the sheriff. And the sheriff says you killed someone it city he's never been in Never met this person. They say you're going to jail. And they put him in jail. Put him on death row without a trial he was on death. Row without a trial for six years and I've been death row before studying for movie and the one thing that I knew about death row was at the worst thing you give. A person is hope because they know that at some point At any point they could be taken off to either electric chair or however they're going to be a or expired but hope walks in in the form of Bryan Bryan Stevenson. Who has played wonderfully Michael Jordan? He takes the case. This is a nineteen eighty six. which wasn't that long ago and They pulled off the miraculous And exonorated a person who had never been in. This has never happened in Alabama person to be exonerated off of death row. And that's the store and what was amazing about how our director destination destined and Michael Be put the movie together on how it brings. Everybody and you saw this Toronto in Toronto. Where just make people crazy and you got I? I don't know eight minutes and thirteen minutes standing ovation but what I really appreciated about the movie. Was it allowed everyone in this movie tested in front of a all black audience at a ninety seven now we expect it for that to be in a high number then they tested in the mid West in front of mostly white audience and we what they say it tested at a ninety eight so that lets you know that the work that was done in the movie as the adapt tation of a book really really got it done. It really worked. Let's look at a clip from your performance Sir Ingest Mercy Screen Actors Guild nominated for I godless. So let's look list from Harvey all know what it is here. You get from the moment you ball buddy over these white folks and make them laugh and try to make him like it. Whatever that is and you say yes or no man but when it's your turn ain't got no thanks take evidence and all the witnesses they got eight thing another matter when all your thank is I looked like a WHO could kill somebody? That's not what I think the way. You're not looking at him and then you do. It's just it's devastating because he wants to get it out. He wants him to hear what was going on in in this soul and then that look. I'm sure he's done it a few times that look to see if what I told hold him really landed. Sometimes people can be in those positions and it's no pad pencil numbers. You're just another person. I'm on my way. But when he looked up so Michael be looking back at him. Engaged young ready ready to take on whatever this whatever this monster is designed to do at the end it was another thing too. I studied a film that that move to me was made famous to me by Al Pacino in The Godfather and if you remember I think it was Zena he was when he was getting ready to kill him at the dinner table. Yeah when he says. I'm going to talk Doc Italian till Michael foresaken and as he goes to talk. Al Pacino Leans up to listen but he looks this way first and and then he engaged so as you study the the art. There's certain things that you bring along with you. That are really effective. Well it sure sure works and that's what you want. You don't just see this movie and say you want to talk to people about it and you see this. You gotTa feel it because there's instead of just anger and just rage. There's a sense of. We can do something about it if we fail. Were trying to do something it. Listen the thing about. This is what I enjoyed about the way. The movie plays out is said when people leave this movie. They feel like they want to get involved. What can I do? What can I do to change his narrative? What can I do to pull back to mass of some of these injustices? And that's what's been so fulfilling with this film because Brian I Steve Isn't who still going out there every day of about his job. He needs it. He needs that people to know that these things are going on because it helps in his endeavors in taking these people and trying to you know put their lives back together. Well Walter Your Johnny on on these calls a lot of things. But he's the kind of person that grows up in this Alabama neighborhood and it was. It's very ironic in the movie. How everybody there even racist Alabama is saying? This is Monroe Kennedy. This is where Harper Lee wrote to them walking bird right which is about Wow this racist that. They don't even say dangerous sort of bouncing off her celebrity. What well here's the thing is like like I'd say all the time there were some very interesting things that wall to sit? Did I looked like a man that could kill somebody. This is the perception that were attacking what tackling the perception that a black man automatically you feel like there is some some of villainous or ominous thing that he possesses therefore of when he is accused of something. We sorta turn the other way. You know we don't necessarily we give them the benefit of the doubt. I can't tell you how many times when when there's something going on on television and there's there's some type of crime every black person to tell you man. I hope it's not a black person. Listen you know why because it continues the narrative but continues The procession so that's what we're what we were tackling in in the movie Walter. Walter says you're guilty from the day you were born now. That was something that we actually ad-libbed in the in the script really. Yeah because yes that's my line Growing up in a southern place in Texas in Texas and being met with early age age racism being called As a young kid it baffled me I was eight years old. My grandfather told me go. Get some gas and gas like twenty five cents a gallon. So he's bringing some gas. I I had to walk on the other side of the tracks. Go get the gas but I think the gas only came up to eighteen cents and I need to get to seven cents back but I didn't WANNA leave the gas out you know so I had to walk into the place I walk in and the guy says. Hey what are you doing while you bring the gas. And I looked at him. I said hey eight. I'm only eight nine. Remember marching back to my grandfather and told him what happened. My grandfather went over and talked to the man told him. You know. That's not nice and whatever you told them what He. He squatted. But I couldn't couldn't wrap my mind around a grown man looking at a child insane and saying that and so that's where I got the line I said I don't have nothing to do with this. I was just born. How can I change this? Why are you so angry at me just because because I was born? Yeah so when you're born into the world and this label is on you just because you're born. I thought that that was something that Walter that we should Add to the to the layer of his character saying I was just born because that's all of us were only just
The 2020 Oscar Nominations Din't Have To Look Like This
"We now know who was nominated for this year's Academy Awards and who wasn't there were no women pick for the directing Oscar and only one person of color. Harriet Stars Cynthia. Rio was among the twenty acting nominees. He's but what if like Hollywood does in a few movies. There was an alternate history to the Oscars. Franklin Leonard wrote about his imagined Academy Award nominations for the Washington Post. He's the creator of the blacklist an annual compilation of much admired but unpredicted movie scripts Franklin. Welcome back to the show. Thanks for having me the back. So we're not so sad. Your column is almost funny. It could have been a satirical piece from the onion. What motivated it? Well here's here's the interesting thing right like it. It didn't necessarily need to even be ready satire if anything you know. The article was written as a as a list of all of the people could reasonably have been nominated in place of those who got nominated and I think that there are additional people. That aren't even mentioned in the article. who also could have gotten reasonably? We nominated and no one would have batted an eye except for the fact that it would have been unusual that all the nominees people of color that all of the directing on these women which you know is so far from our reality only because history would suggest that all the nominees should be white and all the directors should be met. Well let's talk about that right. Because there was a lot of great artistic accomplishment from people who weren't nominated I think about hustlers from Lorraine Skafar you on the star Jennifer Lopez Lulu Wong the director of the Farewell Greta Gerwig who made little women performances by Alfie Woodard and clemency Aquafina and farewell the entire cast a parasite right nominated for best picture. None of the actors were so. What's the disconnect in your mind between the great work and the recognition or lack of recognition of that? Great Work Work. I mean the short answer is racism and sexism in the intersection between the two. I think that there is a fundamental lack of appreciation for the work of women directors and the work of Actors of Color. I mean I. I saw it in on my twitter timeline. And yesterday people saying Oh Jennifer for Lopez wasn't really acting playing herself you know and I think there's an assumption that you know the actors in parasite or somehow that's just who they are. They're not actually performing. If you've been in a room with a with Song King Ho you know that that was a heck of a performance. So I think that the assumptions and the appreciation and the value that we give to these performances into these directing Sort of accomplishments is diminished. Because of. WHO's doing it? Someone told me you know. Why are you trying to inject politics politics into these decisions? And it's not that I'm trying to inject politics into it is the politics are already in it. I'd like to see them removed or at least an acknowledgement the extent to which the politics there. We're talking with blacklist Creator Franklin Leonard About this year's Oscar nominations earlier this morning a read a piece in the Guardian about how award. Nominations granted people of Color especially women are often for subservient roles like slaves nannies maids. And that's movies like twelve years a slave that help babble even Roma g think there's some truth in that for the few women and women of color who are recognized they play a certain kinds of part and not another kind of role Yeah I think it's pretty arguable. You look at the list of women of color that have been nominated in London You know I suppose. In theory those nomination is progress because She's not playing a slave. The entire time in actually is playing a freedom fighter rescue slaves but no I look I think that there is again and there are some by a large percentage of certain demographics of American culture and really sort of Western culture culture about what role is appropriate for women specifically women of Color. They are far more comfortable with women in those roles than they are. If you stray too far afield and I suspect Jennifer Lopez playing a stripper gets one over on the men that she is supposed to be dancing for left left. Some significant percentage of members who the Kademi uncomfortable since actors are by far the biggest block of Academy voters. Why do the Oscar? Nominations differ from the screen actors guild. which nominated Jamie Foxx from just mercy the Peter Neon go from us and Jennifer Lopez from hustlers I suspect it's age. I I again this. I'm I'm not an expert on this. You can probably correct me if I'm wrong. But the threshold to join SAG is a lot lower in terms of career accomplishment than the threshold to join the academy and therefore it sort of seems inevitable that the academy voters are probably at least the mean significantly older than your average Sag goater and given the changes that have happened in the industry particularly over the last twenty years. I suspect that has something to do with the different nominations. The academy to a certain extent stint can only recognize movies that get made even if Oscar voters still ignored a lot of great work from underrepresented filmmakers and actors. Now you've worked as a creative executive. I can Hollywood so from where you sat on that side of the table. What needs to change in the kinds of movies that are made and who gets to make them so the academy voters voters at least can pick from a wider pool of eligible performances? Films having the same changes that needs to be made in any hiring environment where there's endemic matthias you know. We need to hire a labor force. That's more representative of the culture. As a whole we need to empower them to tell the stories. If they're most excited about telling we you need to make sure they have the resources to tell those stories well And then I think that combined with the changing demographics of the academy membership. I think you'd see a real shift over time in what gets awarded. I think it's really important to remember that you know the reason this conversation sort of pivots around the academy as bad as the time. I'm during the year when the industry is the most visible to the world and I think that it's the time when you know they're they're they're the most outside pressure can be exerted and it's it's the clearest opportunity community to make these cases right that no women were nominated for best director. It's a lot easier to understand that than it is to understand that ninety percent of the movies that are directed a studios are directed by men by so. I think that that's why this conversation happens around this time of year but the real issue and the one that matters is who Who tells the stories of our time? Do they have the resources to tell them. And do they have the autonomy to tell them as they see fit. So let me ask you this last question. We know that the academy I suspect is probably a little mortified. That only one person of color was nominated in the acting races and that no women were many directors. Is it going to be same as it always was the year from now two years from now. How quickly are we not going to be having this conversation? You know I think that the end of the day we're doing with small data sets and you know the IT. It takes a long time to make movies put movies into the marketplace and then run them through the award season so you know even if everything changed as of today we probably wouldn't be looking at a major change until twenty twenty two and as we all know Those changes tend to be even more glacial than the industry. So it's hard to say you know hopefully within this decade Lord knows. I'm going to do everything to make sure it happens faster. Franklin Leonard is the creator of the blacklist. His piece in the Washington Post is called the twenty twenty Oscar Oscar. Nominations didn't have to look like this. Franklin thanks so much for coming back on the show. Thanks for having

"And leo kinda sees used as a kindred spirit so to speak gets famous after titanic little closed off to the media he brings the book to michael man who directed heat last the mohicans and the inside are all films that we love you're on the podcast and man brings the book to john logan the right the screenplay logan had had success writing the screenplay for any given sunday and then gladiator so although he's involved for years on the project man actually ends up passing on directing the aviator because he had just done ali and he didn't wanna do nother biopic he instead chooses to direct collateral the tom cruise and jamie foxx and so he calls marty and says do you want a direct the aviere samardi said he had always wanted to stay away from the hughes story because guys like his good buddy steven spielberg in warren beatty had expressed interest in it but he was struck by the symbolism hughes represented and he also he said his law the curse so to speak this is mardi talking about hughes his cursor to speak is the curse for all of us in terms of a nation a country that acquires wealth like empires i love studying ancient history and seeing how empires rise and fall they sowed the seeds of their own destruction and i think that's what fascinated may ultimately the story asks is that the wave of the future for everyone.

"Then we have big sean i kinda talked about it that was a big hit that was like and no no in my opinion i know some people would disagree but bic sean i know you could do better let's talk about tirees i feel like tirees is always dressed impress i loved his succeed or and i felt like i had just the right amount of sparkles on speaking of tirades by the way i'm not sure if worse all goes on at bt awards are not and i'm hoping next year i'll be able to have a different you know a different experience or feedback because i hope to be actually at the bt awards but i felt like every single person that was introducing these awards whether it's tirees whether it's jamie foxx whether it was p diddy it was so obvious that they're reading off a teleprompter and me in that is that is not really acceptable thought jimmy fox was very funny so i didn't really minded but then there were other people that clearly like they're just reading off the teleprompter so i think that's something that probably they should work on next year may be and then i kind of want to end it on a positive note because i am obsessed literally obsessed with dj callard's son assads his suit made my entire night like this literally the cutest a baby ever and i love how he matched with gucci mane i'm not sure if it was intentional i'm not sure if gucci mane call dj cowed an awesome he can me in your son kind of.
