"The lawsuit and they get the rights to the character that doesn't stop disney from making marvel movies. They doesn't stop the avengers from coming around the you know what i'm saying. They just have to pay more people right day. Just have to cut half that marvel money in like two out to the estate which again this is what i'm saying. It's not that the it's not that the that the The artists kids or family have a better idea or plan for the characters. They just want the money. That's where we're at radic. Were at a position where it's all about the money so i don't leave it alone. I maybe whatever maybe if it was different if it was like our family and lego modern design the but again you work if you work for a company and you do something for that company. That company owns yeah. It's kind of a given. But i don't know anyway. So that's something that's happening in the news Pretty spears has been all over the news. The new documentary because the whole her whole free britney brittany yes to situation. I just watched britney spears episode of south park. Yeah there is their plane because the britney spears is all on. Hbo max i just let it play in the background and just happened to be that episode but but yeah so they came out with I think it was the new york times or something. Did another documentary on. Britney spears and the whole Her dad owns. Yeah all of that conservative ship or whatnot and how bad it was and with the stuff that they were doing and control leaner and i watched i watched part of it. I wasn't trying to like dive in. But i watched part of it now. Like jesus christ just as i mean. Yeah leave this poor girl alone. Fuck looks letter. P but That's all i'm gonna say about that. Like i didn't i didn't i don't have details. I just know that that's right now. Is what is circulating in the news You got anything else. I think so i think do but oh yeah yeah i guess go ahead. I came across this ad for investing in smart context. Talk contact lenses. Okay and i started looking into it more and there's another company that's actually doing it. Better faster called mojo mo jo contact lenses okay. And the where they do they. Because it's one thing for to say smart glenn tech lenses it's another thing for usually to be the same smart technology that's like in television. You see what. I'm saying like you could put smart on the front of anything right you know. Oh a smart toaster. Why 'cause toast fast. That's smart stupid. that's what it is to be stupid toaster but No no so it's like it. It's augmented reality on these contact lenses that actually help with just like. I don't know the only thing that i actually seen that it had done. Because it's still in the early development stage everything but like if you go to their website it shows like somebody looking up at the sky And then as you like start to scroll or whatever it shows that it like it lines out the constellations and then like tells you what. It is stuff like that so and then. There's another one that i had howard that i don't know how our contact lenses electronically powered in your eyeball. Maybe you put in a case in. It's like that pad thing where it charges it. So it's like what if the fucking battery explodes in your fucking Yeah the now. You're blind and now you see cool shit for like a day in the explodes and bill. Right pyro. I'm not going to say. I'm going to be the first one to test it out eric. One i But no and then there's like so if you're like riding your bike or whatever it tells you like the speed that you're going and stuff like over your normal vision but it doesn't obstruct your vision when you're right. Seems like it would be a headache. I get it well. Yeah because it's shining light straight into your retinas as close as you as you get closer literally like putting a tv on your eyeball. That's fucking bonkers. I think that's going to be a problem. But i like the google glass situation like you know. See we last. You know episode or episode before this. We talked about the ray-ban situation. Yeah facebook thing. Yeah if you have to connect facebook could suck it. Yeah you mount you can look my balls just lick it Yeah just like sorry. But no like i do because i thought about even getting smart glasses. But they don't do. Quite what i want. I don't i don't think they make them anymore right now. They do but it's like they're just like they have a camera and their bluetooth speakers a microphone. And i'm sorry that that they look creepy. Yeah right yeah. Like i was just like oh like like when you wear that. People are people. No yeah no. I wanted to look just wearing glasses and chits on the inside on the inside where i can like i can see and then it just like pulls up and saw like you know Like the constellation thing when you look up at the stars and then it does all you mind having that that augmented reality information on a regular set of glasses are love it but there was another one lines. contact lenses. seems a little too much right okay. So there was the other one that i had seen not mojo the one that originally i can't remember the name of it. That's okay but it's contact lenses but glasses as well. Wait. what so it's realistically. It's it's smart glasses right. But like when i'm wearing these contact lenses that's when i could see the augmented stuff on the glasses if i had given you my glasses and you put them on. You wouldn't be able to see any of the smart technology on it unless you wearing the contacts privacy screen of clouds. Nobody would see anything on the actual lenses. Only me because of the contacts. So it's like like. I said like a privacy screen type thing. I thought that was awesome. You that's cool but that means that the the the context are tinted a specific way. Right give seeing those screen tints. Were anybody looking at the screen. It looks like black right then. You put the glasses on. And it's like a regular screen or whatever like regular little monitor. Yes yeah it's gonna be that same way. So the question is how will that. If at all affect vision affect or ultra vision because supposedly it doesn't but here's the thing is i mean supposedly doesn't right and they'll say that same. They've said that. Same thing about sunglasses right but i remember. We were driving in the car. And gem one time gems like oh look at rainbow. It's huge it's like this huge rainbow on like driving. And i'm like what she's like. It's a huge ramo in front of us. You're are you losing your mind. there's no fucking rainbow in front of us. There's nothing in front of us. Just blue-sky she goes down. There's a huge it. It's gonna call cross the sky. She goes how do you not see this big ass rainbow. And i'm like there's an okay first of all honey. I don't know what you're seeing. I don't know what medication you've taken. I don't know what's happening right now. But there's no fucking rainbow turns out. My ray bans. That was wearing had that. Like drivers. blake anti-glare vision So it immediately blocks out every color of the fucking rainbow. So i'm like what. I took my glasses off. And i and it's fucking huge ask rainbow in one can gone all we bucket. O mcgaughey across a guy like the double rainbow guy. All that bullshit was happening. It's almost triple vo odd. So beautiful all right so that was happening. And i couldn't see at all i'm like i looked at it off. I'm like oh my god. You're right and i you know. Hand her glasses. I'm like look through these glasses. Though it completely fucking anti rainbow glasses like stops rainbows no more fucking rainbows in your life. If you were these glasses. Fuck you know more sparkly rainbows. Everything is dull. Thank trayvon rape. Raymond sunglasses rayban hates rainbows. Fuck you. that's where we're at. That's how it goes. New Movie 'Zola' Is Based on a Long Series of Tweets

"Underscore Zoeller Moon tweeted. You want to hear a story about how me and this here fell out its kind of long, But it's Felicity Spence. What followed was a wild, mostly true tale about how an exotic dancer Zola found herself on a road trip that went dangerously awry to put it mildly. The new movie. Zola is based on that series of about 150, funny and often profane tweets. NPR's Mallory, You talk to some of the people behind Zola about turning a Twitter moment into a feature length film. That viral threat in 2015 wasn't the first time Zola born Asia King talked about that wild weekend on Twitter. She'd mentioned the story briefly after it happened the year before, but didn't go into much detail. Soon as I got home kind of just was like when I met this girl at my job, and she completely lied Kings, an exotic dancer, and she says her Twitter was already full of wild stories about people at the clubs where she worked. She got some sympathetic responses from her followers. But not much else. See, Intense encounters were just part of the job. Since I didn't go in depth. They kind of just felt like Oh, she had another one of her weekends, and we moved on Then that night in 2015. King was at home, pregnant and scrolling on her phone. I had came across the pictures from that weekend and kind of just like got triggered. I was like young man is I'm going to tell this for real. And while Twitter did want to hear what happened next Every detail she wanted to share. We just met yesterday and you're already trying to take hold trips together. Be ready by two. But the road to Zola, the movie, much like the trip itself would end up being full of suspense. Journalists called than Hollywood James Franco signed on to direct and brought his own writing team. But as a script took shape Asia King started to feel like the story was becoming less hers. They kind of added things in the blank space that I guess they thought would be entertaining. You know, in a film, it just started to really rub me the wrong way in 2017 Franco left the project, and

The class in question here was called a master class on sex scenes. In this class both sides did announce the settlement to the judge terms. Were not disclosed. I don't know how much money was given here studio for that. HBO's New Documentary Warns Of The Dangers Of Cyberwarfare

"The perfect weapon now on HBO is a documentary about a danger. We've all heard a lot about, but don't really know new and frightening warning from the FBI on hackers using malicious software to launch a cyber attack against us. It's based on the best selling book by New York Times National Security correspondent David He, Sanger. About a new form of conflict that is global, inexpensive, invisible and supremely available to small groups, not just large powers. Jon Mateos, the director of the perfect weapon, and he joins us now from Brooklyn. Thank you so much for being with us. Thanks for having me, Scott. You know, I'm going to ask you plenty of questions about the dangers that cyber warfare poses to the US, But I have to ask you first. Did we fire the first shots across the bow? It appears as if we did Scott because when we attacked the Iranian nuclear program in 2007, the code that we put into the plant was released and everyone knew about it. Now there were plenty of covert kind of operations that go on, probably things we'll never know about. But that one was let out of the box. And because of that, it appears as if we fire the first shot, and we've been paying for it ever since. Let me ask you about a few attacks. We know about 2013 cyber attack. On Las Vegas that was done in response to something of casino owners. That's right. Well, he wasn't just any casino owner was Sheldon Adelson, a well connected casino that's correct on he had gone online. He was part of the symposium where he talked about actually setting off a nuclear weapon. Against Iran as a way to stop their nuclear program, and that video went onto YouTube. It went viral and the Iranians found out about it, and they planned, very powerful, destructive cyber attack of his sands casino operation to demonstrate something to him or to the United States. Oh, that's the thing about these sorts of attacks. You know, they're short of war attacks. They're not necessarily attacking our Our critical infrastructure all the time. But it sends a message. That destructive attack is easy for a country like Iran. It's it's an asymmetrical attack, and it made a very strong point. Once it was let out. I mean, the Sands Corporation did everything I could to hide the fact that they've lost $40 million in their technology, But it was let out and incentive, frightening message And, as David Sanger says in the film What happened in Vegas didn't stay in Vegas 2014 cyberattack essentially brought down a Seth Rogan James Franco film the interview, which in fact does raise serious questions about freedom of expression. On also of you know, a major film corporation Sony. Yeah, that was that was the one that really got so much notice because it became suddenly an international incident. And I have to say it's one of the big issues in the film that I think people will recognizes that that the US is uniquely vulnerable to these kinds of attacks because of our open this because of our First Amendment because of the public square. Our weapons against authoritarians regimes don't necessarily have the same effect happened. Dump attacks, like what happened at Sony are not as effective to countries like Iran and Russia.

Oscars 2020: who will have the biggest night?

"Are the Oscars are this weekend who are you rooting for anybody on your list I like once upon a time in Hollywood I just thought that was a great film I love the cast awesome stuff several nominations for that film bills worker is joining us now long time energy reporter for the sun times still with five Chicago is a contributor and bill has followed many many many Oscars lot but you know I always loved about you bill you you follow the local entertainment scene so well and always told us such interesting nuggets about what was going on here well that's true I've always loved you know I mean I think that's important I think it as we all know how they moved in this world of of the current the twenty first century media I think local local local is the way to cope in general because I think that's what people really want to get because they can get you know the national stories from other outlets but but this is an interesting year at all well it's always interesting with the Academy Awards although I do think in certain categories is here there's there's some things that are pretty well said but I know we think of course they're going to go again this year without it without a without a whole list which I don't think it's a terrible thing I think you know well I'll tell you why I think so often unless you get somebody like Billy crystal who's always knocks the you know the ball out of the park I think over the years I think will be colder did a good job we recently had our critic's guide Bible to the critics choice awards which of the broadcast broadcast critics and you know we had two days he did a wonderful job and I think because he didn't try to overdo it you know came out was charming and didn't you know try to be too cute but I think sometimes I think people want to see who's going to win they want to see the presenters I don't think they want a lot of big production numbers and all those give me some wonderful musical numbers at the Oscars you know your health Elton John performing in and you know it's gonna be really quite quite wonderful in the court system the result of a few people who really are talented musically but it's gonna be interesting to see what happens on Sunday I can say I disagree too but I'd like the host I guess you're right but what okay what is a good host was a good house because right some of the host I kind of remember the Anne Hathaway that was a disaster and as much as I loved you know but she yeah I do too but she what that wasn't right for her at all and James Franco I think the the combo wasn't right and that yeah then they tried to do so many acts that an already long ceremony got longer and longer right letterman was not successful either you know so I mean and and I love him but I mean I just it's just a very tough job I will say that so I think sometimes a safe way to go is with out the host and we'll see how it goes David Letterman wasn't wanted the Oprah uma uma Oprah right rumors were rolling their eyes he's like I got to go and I got a key thing is we we didn't work we actually have some audio here from Billy crystal because he was just on Jimmy Kimmel okay crystal has hosted the Oscars I think nine times total nine times jingle himself is hosted the Oscars twice yes yeah he did a good job he did so the two of them had thoughts about the hostess Oscars here's here's what they had to say I always loved being out there I I loved the guess the trusts you know that the movie academy had a made to to get me out that I always I felt like there was a great honor to do it and I think that when you have a show that's as long as it is is going to happen and I think the problem with the no hosting perhaps is that there's not somebody out there to capitalize on that moment ledge view had when the wrong Best Picture right who could forget that the one that's right but he does make a good point there he does make a good point that you can can bring it into the moment and and capitalize on it that is a very good point I hadn't thought of that someone says something that you can sort of have fun with right that just sort of right out there and then they bring it back and make everybody sort of laugher connect over that moment we just had a listener say six three oh what about the la la land fiasco that would be weird without a host because sort of look at each other like what that would that would have been terrible and and then on a lighter note I mean it's great when you have somebody you know when when Jack Palance remember that the one arm push up you know on the sages many years ago and of course and you know Billy came out and made a great joke about it because you know those are the things that you love love to see happen yeah my favorite also I think was on my list of favorites I should say Ellen DeGeneres remember that a normal than the selfie she took and then when she was busting Steven Spielberg around a telephone tell take the picture you know when I could change my point of view you're either going to go maybe on your side your honor but you know I heard you it coming in when you talk about once upon a time in Hollywood that really was one of my favorite favorite movies of the year I see like bill if this one is sort of got a little bit of an unfair advantage because it seems like one of those movies that people in the industry natural sort of are drawn to because it has history of historical factor I know it's sort of a bag I would love to see it with but it's it's one of my favorite but I think all of the momentum seems to be from the directors guild of the producers guild all of the different wards have been happened sounds like it's going to be nineteen seventeen which I liked very much but technically it had some incredible you know incredible beautiful moments but my favorite if I was going to pick one it would be once upon a time in Hollywood or parasite which of course is going to win trust me it's gonna win best foreign film the people that are further further Oscar parties if they want to fill out there if you get if you get some of those lesser known categories right you can win the Oscar Poole I've no I bet it's true that's a good strategy that's true yes I have eight one five Oscars praying for no politics I need a break yeah what do you think we all do I think we all do and I think that will be that's one thing that I hope we do have because I think after what we've all gone through in this country in the last few weeks I think yes no politics is a very good suggestion but it's interesting because in terms of all the acting categories I think they're pretty well locked into a whole I think it is going to win and I think most people do what do you think what you got for best supporting actress I think well that's what the one category where there could be a surprise in the usually is a surprise the one category excuse me would be best supporting actress because even though most people think it's gonna be Laura Dern was terrific as a divorce lawyer in marriage story you know who could possibly slip in there because he has won a few things as far as people from little women who played one of the daughters and that's one category but I do think it's gonna be Laura Dern for best Supporting Actor it's Brad Pitt as one everything is beloved by many people in Hollywood you know it's sort of his his year in his time and I think that's a pretty much of a lock in for Best Actress it's it's I think pretty much going to be Renee Zellweger for Judy plank Judy Garland and although I would look I would be disappointed if there was a real real upset here in Jersey ronin from little women one because I think she's terrific but they're all these categories have great nominees and of course for Best Actor again it's probably going to be Joaquin Phoenix because again he won everything so far incredible performance I didn't see G. R. A. Renee Zellweger in Judy but I didn't know that that was not universally loved by critics no it was not what happened there was everybody pretty much loved her I mean I agree with this the movie itself was just sort of you know just so so I think the reason she's basically the nominee the only nominee for that movie there may be a cost and it might be a minor on the minor categories I shouldn't call minor but one of the most popular categories but the movie itself was not great she was what made the movie yeah I you know I I didn't see that because of sort of the reviews the main one that would be worth revisiting because I loved her and that was the online series where she was the rich woman who is trying to convince people a little comes of age is he was a recent series streaming and she was phenomenal and I just remember and she sings herself I mean the fact that she you know somebody's like a voice like garland which everybody knows so well the fact that you do your own singing I think is also a major push any and there's so many scenes in this movie you look and you think it's actually Judy Garland on stage and screen excuse me so I think it's and that's pretty much of a lock but there again you know you never that's pictures that that was one I mean I think it's probably going to be nineteen seventeen but I would be happy with virtually any of those you know that are up there there's nine nominees you know because they changed the rules a few years ago but you know a lot of talk this year the parasite which definitely is gonna win best foreign film it might be the first year that the best foreign film also wins Best Picture that would be somewhat of an upset but that would be a fascinating thing to see what is the Netflix series that Renee Zellweger was and I was trying to remember to remember bill out we only have a minute here but if you if you are going to the movies this weekend as I know some people do when they try to say Hey I'm gonna catch up on some of these Oscar nominated films what what was one of the films you would suggest the probably not many people have gone to I think I don't know I think first of all I think you know probably nineteen seventeen I think it's it's a kind of a tough movie to watch many ways but I think that that that seems to be the front runner for Best Picture if you haven't seen once upon a time in Hollywood definitely catch that and I'll tell you a parasite is be the third one because that is such it's got a real twist to it I can't tell you much and I would give it away but it that would be the film that is probably the one most unique dark comedy that come down the pike in a long time okay you got my attention on that I'm gonna check that one out bills record thank you so much for checking in with us at any time good to hear your voice same

The Frame 5th Anniversary Special

"We launched the frame. We were doing something for the the very first time I had been a print reporter my entire life so we ask our guests for stories when they first succeeded or failed old. We have a thirty second request though in two weeks. Everybody who comes on is saying the first thing that something happened. I M Gena Davis and the first time fine I got cast in a movie was in tootsie. Few the first job did I failed and actually got fired on American gangster. I'm John Stewart the first time. I've bobbed onstage. funnily enough was the first time I was on stage. For some reason I was absolutely not nervous at all. The first scene was with Dustin Hoffman in my underwear but what I learned from that was Is Not all about me and you have to learn how to advocate sometimes as a filmmaker The Bitter End New York City. One o'clock in the morning following three doors cover bands. I had a good five minutes prepared about two minutes into the audience realized I might suck at this. The funniest thing was I didn't know you're only supposed to come on the days that you're working and nobody bothered to to tell me for six weeks. I showed up at six and went home when everybody else did. I'd get a chair and put it right next to Sydney Pollack considerable bad day avenue. I still feel that page on the is I walked into the night I thought to myself you know. There are a lot of law schools if I could I could go to them. And our first guest in two thousand fourteen was Christopher Nolan He. He was about to release his movie. Interstellar a lot of people are saying that this is your most personal film. How do you respond to that? You take a compliment. You think they might be right. I basic they don't know me so I I do you know yourself. I don't know Myself Derby when either you've been a lot of real world events that have driven our coverage over the years but the one that coincided with our launch was a Sony Hack today today the. US government pointed the finger of blame directly at North Korea with a devastating cyber attack against Sony. Pictures taken down the movie. The interview. That poked fun on at the North Korean dictator whole. They caused a Lotta damage. The cyber attack of Sony pictures which allegedly was conducted by North Korea came in response to a movie. It was called the interview. It Starts Seth Rogan and James Franco. It was a crazy story. It evolved every day and in the middle of it Dan Sterling in who was the screenwriter of the interview was with us in studio. Hi thanks for having me. It's very rare that a screenwriter is like with us to talk about breaking news news so I guess my breaking news questions. What the Hell's going on today? Well I just know what's going on in my email inbox which is an increasing flood of people asking me if if I'm okay both emotionally physically and financially was your answer. What do you tell you know? I was at a party on Saturday night where the host was introducing me to everybody the at the Party as this is the guy that brought down Sony exit was funny. Well the first four or five hundred times. The joke was made. It was funny except Except actually it's a way it's actually not funny to me I'm It's been a surreal experience. I'm still very much in the middle of the one thing that I know that I'm not happy about is actually The real suffering that is going on at Sony. Not Not just by the person who green lit my films so bravely but also by all the other people affected by the hack. I'm quite concerned about them there. There's so much about this story. We'll get to the film in it in a second. But what about about the reaction to the film itself has been the most surprising to you. Well look About a year ago today I was I was on a sound stage age and I was at the monitor watching Seth Rogan who was completely naked except for a sock around his penis and he had a bunch of Salami Alami tucked between his buttocks that a German shepherd was eating out of because the scene was he was being Sniffed by you know a bomb sniffing dog and I was laughing my head off sitting next to his mother who seemed to be used to these sorts of things and she was knitting a scarf and at the time Nothing like any. This could have occurred to me because the movie is just a in our minds was supposed to be an outrageous of course somewhat provocative but totally hilarious comedy which I think that it is but the the the reaction by the North Korean government was surprising to me And all of the things that have ensued have been. Ah I was quite naive going into

Five Years Later, Who Really Hacked Sony?

"Welcome to the frame. I'm John Horn five years ago. Oh just as Thanksgiving approached employs at Sony pictures logged into their computers and were greeted by this ominous message hacked by Hashtag copay over a picture of a sinister looking red skeleton. GOP reportedly stands for guardians of peace a previously unknown group now claiming credit for the hack the the hackers leaked millions of files putting confidential employee. Information and embarrassing e mails about the studios internal workings out in the Open Ben. Fritz there's an editor at the Wall Street Journal and the author of the book. The big picture the fight for the future of movies and he remembers being in the Journal. Newsroom when he heard about the hack I remember I remember reading about it online and talking to a few sources I knew what Sony and of course it I I didn't really understand the magnitude of it and how how damaging it would be that it wasn't until the next week I believe when When they started leaking all these documents and information I started to see some of the stuff that was coming out and realized? Just how serious this was for. Those who don't remember the hack was quickly connected to North Korea and Kim Jong Moons anger over the film the interview. It started Seth Rogan James Franco as a couple of TV. TV journalists who are going to interview and potentially assassinate the North Korean president. And at the time we were interviewing the screenwriter. Dan Sterling this. This is back in two thousand fourteen. You know I was at a party. On Saturday night where the per- the host was introducing me to everybody at the party. As this is the guy that brought down Sony. It was funny by that. Well the first four or five hundred times the joke was made It was funny except actually in a way. It's actually not funny to me. How was the heck essentially blamed on the movie and was that theory actually borne out after the fact? North Korea was in fact behind the hacking and Kim Jong was very very mad. That this you know American film was was was mocking him. Northwards of very poor country but they do actually have A. It's kind of very good Hacking program and He wanted to stop them from coming out and or punish Sony for having made it and he was pretty successful on both fronts. At the time the leading theory experts was there was North Korea but a lot of people around Sony. Thought it couldn't be eight or maybe it was angry at employee's rivals or something but The the FBI About a year ago concluded pretty definitively that it wasn't Korea and in fact they indicted Somebody who was part of a North korean-backed hacking team that was called the Lazarus project and was for numerous cybercrimes including the intrusion at Sony. That a lot of people forget. Is that the movie. We didn't really get released. I mean Sony was so worried about it that they pulled the release and then they kind of backtracked on that and at the time we were talking gene with a guy named James cursed he's the founder of. La's downtown independent theatre. He is in the studio talking about the movie. And this is what happens. There's been so much we were getting calls about it. My phone's ringing up. Oh it's the REP from Sony. Go ahead take it. Hi this the gym so he actually gets a call from Sony in the middle of the interview pain. Can you play the. Can you play movie in your theater. It ends up not getting getting much of an exhibition schedule at all. Does it. No it only a few hundred independent theaters briefly What happened was the hackers threatened that they were going to Bomb or cause violence at at an attack any theater that played the film and You know understandably a lot didn't wanNA play and as a result and Sony you know AH incorrectly so they weren't going to force any theater to play it even those that had contractual obligations to do it and then it was just crazy thing where a few hundred independent theaters did play it and It was also released online simultaneously by a few companies that were willing to do that. Not many people ended up seeing results. So if that was Kim Jong UN's goal he was very successful at that. Most people didn't see the film and Sony was severely damaged by the hack. So you gotta give the wind North Korea here very sadly well. Let's talk about how Sony was damaged by the hack. You spent a lot of time. I'm looking through documents. Released in the hack for part of your research and your book the Big picture the fight for the future of movies. So what did it reveal about Sony. And how did it more important reveal. How the studio had kind of lost its way right? So the hacktivists released tons of you know from the top executives at the time as well as internal documents than really sensitive financial stuff and it revealed when it comes to the interview that they had had numerous discussions about something like this happening and didn't take it seriously really. There was a lot of conflict between the top executives at the studio and they weren't just having a lot of trouble coming up with major motion picture franchises that could compete with you know the marvels marvels and the fast and furious is of the world. It was really an amazing insight into a studio that was struggling to adapt to the modern movie business. Well I'm going to ask about marvel because one of the the most remarkable pieces of information in your book is how and why Sony Refuse to pay twenty five million dollars for almost all of Marvel superheroes in the late nineties. So what did that episode say. About how Hollywood is changing and how Sony really missed the future. Yeah Hollywood You know in the late nineties. Not Rule I- franchises. The way it is now is really ruled ruled by movie stars. So Sony thought. Well we've got Adam Sandler we've got will Smith. That's that's what really is valuable. You know we're not gonNA waste our money in the reserve. It was maybe spider-man's valuable but that that's all that's all they wanted. And of course Sony horrifically miscalculated and. There's there's a Lotta stuff in the hack about Sony's attempts to to fix that mistake including trying to revive the spiderman franchise a few years ago. I think it's fair to say that in the wake of the Sony Hack back a lot of studios and a lot of companies probably try to improve their firewalls and had better. It security but do you think there's a bigger less than about Hollywood. That might be remembered from the hack. Do you think it still has an impact on the business into people still talk and think about what happened to Sony people. You know people all the time reference Sony when they when they talk about. How much sensitive stuff should we say on an email? There's a sense that there's this knowledge not to censor knowledge that email is never truly secure. And if you're not necessarily they comfortable with the world knowing about it then you probably shouldn't put it in an email if you don't have something nice to say. Don't say it at all. I guess or at least eight on the phone Ben. Fritz is an editor At The Wall Street Journal and he is the author of the book. The big picture the fight for the future movies Ben. Thanks so much for coming back on the show. John was my pleasure

"Off a loss well James Franco is only three and twelve against the spread and no Tom Allen has a really done well as an underdog as far as going on right now so it's fun I think it's a decent spot I'm on the Hoosiers there sorry I love again here Katie I think that no paid Ramsey is not good against pressure typically attempt by the unit Indians on they've only given up thirteen sacks this year a top to bottom the match of really really well I don't think I don't think Penn state has the office of weapons to run away with this game all right that's good okay so I feel a little bit better about the play now a lot of people say look whenever all three guys are going with that same play could be a little dicey I'll have to ask a little time to get that stat because we do have the stats when JD and Brad go with the same like but if Katie also chimes in on a play we'll see how it goes when all three of us are on the same side by Cincinnati going to South Florida it is a Cincinnati team that avoided disaster against east Carolina it's a good solid team I mean would rate when readers get that ball going and us bring it out and getting good production of the run game they are tough South Florida it's been a miserable campaign but they played a couple decent games there at home in Tampa they're catching two touchdown just winds growing from twelve to fourteen total dropped three points down to forty seven bridal store with you South Florida at home against the Cincinnati Bearcats in Luke Fickell yeah I thought I'd be liking Cincinnati here yeah I just think it's too expensive at this point the you know Cincinnati it really came up that bad performance conceive Caroline and show themselves last week South Florida I don't think is going to get much going offense cleared the path for me yeah I I lean Eileen the under here Katie but I would also T. Cincinnati and enter together hi to you tease cincy and the under right okay and maybe I mean the under so you would take Cincinnati minus eight and go down to take under fifty three right okay there you go just making sure I get it out there for the listeners Syracuse accuse been a tough campaign for Dino beavers and the guys are going down to Durham now do really excited about bringing Norton Notre Dame in their last week while they were only excited for about four minutes in that game and then after that Notre Dame was excited that they were going to destroy that do teen bride power on the wrong side of that one and Brad to Notre Dame guy said the JT as well as answer there is one all three of us went with the same squad we got beat Syracuse just two and seven against number three in six straight out to foreign five straight up and against the number rattle store with you because I I know this is a big play for you I know this is you know not sour grapes not because you lost against do totals fifty one Duke laying ten and a half but you like the cues and you maybe we got a better number than that yeah.

Tech resurrects James Dean for a new movie

"The Hollywood reporter reporter ran an article. That says James Dean will be brought back on film now. James Dean has been dead since one thousand nine hundred fifty five also. The role is considered the secondary lead. So you're you're going to get a lot of. CG James Dean. The film is called a finding Jack by the CEO of CMG worldwide which represents Danes family said to quote. This opens up a whole new opportunity for many of our clients who are no longer with us Ben just because we have this technology. Should we not doing this. Is this right. Is it right Look we'll see if the movie is successful because unfortunately if it is successful you'll see a lot of copycatting adding that's how Hollywood. That's how Hollywood works. That's how a lot of entertainment works a problem that I have here from reading the Hollywood reporter story is that They said they spent a lot of time. Trying to find the right secondary lead for this part and then determined that a CGI. James Dean was their rest option. I'm not buying that. Yeah I mean how bad is your talent pool such that you can't go like hey possible. James Franco's pretty close like he was kind of looks like extraordinaire to the role. Maybe maybe could find an unknown but yes deficit. Sounds like a gimmick but the idea that the the talent agencies like Oh a lot of our guys are happened happened to be dead we can bring him back. It just sounds like a terrible terrible idea so if you want to look at this very cynically to this has the possibility going back to here. James Franco example of avoiding having to pay a very large sums of money to living well known actors and instead putting a completely really unknown person in a CGI out fed. And then slapping a James Dean skin on them and then calling it a day. It is entirely possible that they would save a lot of money doing this. But I'm not really sure what the dollars and sense are here. So you're thinking that there's going to be a mo cap man or mo cap person running around on stage with whoever the actually does wouldn't wouldn't mo cap motion capture bow cap okay. I'm totally with it. So they are hiring an actor to do the voice though of James Dean so the question. This is a terrible idea. I don't I don't love it and We've we've certainly seen other examples of this before but certainly not not for a lead character. Like for instance. Carrie Fisher is a good example where they did a young version of Carrie Fisher for one of the Star Wars Movies but Young Carrie Fisher didn't exist anymore. She was his older Carrie Fisher at that point so it's in that part it's unavoidable and I would have been I'm more okay with that example I duNno. I just really really curious what this is going to do could this. CG James Dean Win an academy award if is it possible. You're hurting my head I okay. Let's let's let's. Let's talk with that aside.

"Winning actor James Franco has been named in a lawsuit alleging he and two other men ran an acting school that sexually exploited female students the complaint was filed yesterday in Los Angeles Superior Court the plaintiffs are two former students of the now shuttered school called studio for in a statement Franco's lawyer calls it a scurrilous publicity seeking lawsuit and hers Elizabeth Blair reports James Franco was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in one hundred twenty seven hours he won the golden globe for that film as well as for the disaster artist when he opened studio for in twenty fourteen Sarah to their Kaplan was one of its first students she says Franco taught a class called sex scenes she says you have to audition for the class and pay an extra seven hundred and fifty dollars for it but she was thrilled to be selected I really respected him as an actor and the fact that I was selected based of off of an audition meant to me that I was valued for my talent she assumed she would learn how to maneuver sex scenes professionally as an actor but the class did not do that at all in fact I didn't know anything about nudity riders the detail required in them the right to counsel with the director about nude scenes the custom to choreograph nude scenes ahead of time to negotiate them with the cast and the director I knew none of that throughout that class in twenty sixteen Franco made videos of his sex scenes class that he posted on his Facebook page the videos have since been taken down but there is one on video it's described as the first class session in which students talk about the scenarios they came up with when they auditioned Franco give them feedback that's crossing lines you know what I mean and then see how you deal with either you like it or you down as the classes progressed Serra to their Kaplan. says students were encouraged to take risks with their bodies she said she wanted to be a team player so she went along I wanted to do my best and I wanted to make friends there and I wanted to you know have it really means something for me so I did what would seem to be the thing that they wanted in this class and that was. get naked and do sex scenes and not complain and you know push the envelope and I felt encouraged when I. just went for it and she says that she was rewarded for it after I did the sex scenes master class ended the nude scene and the sex scene in my short film I started working with them very regularly and not a lot of other students got that chance the complaint alleges that studio for promise students who were paying tuition they would get to audition for Franco and his company's film projects former student Tony gall is the other plaintiffs who filed the suit most of the work that was offered for us had nudity requirements the complaint also contends the school was designed to circumvent California's a pay for play regulations which prohibits making actors pay for auditions Tony gall says that wasn't the only problem and we were consistently auditioning for projects that he had to nudity and we had to upload are some tapes at home so there's there consistently getting footage of you know the sensitive nature of work some of the allegations against James Franco were reported in January twenty eighteen by the Los Angeles Times Serra to their Kaplan and for other women all former students of Franco's made allegations that similar to those pleaded in the complaint but the times also noted that more than a dozen of Franco's former students at studio for said they had positive experiences there the complaint alleges that the acting school purposefully sought out quote young naive women between the ages of seventeen and twenty four because they would not understand how the film industry functioned plaintiff Serra to their Kaplan says she hopes her lawsuit will shine a light on what she describes as an abuse of power they knew who they were asking to do the improviser nude scenes they knew who was in their classes and I think that's by design because it sort of protects them from any kind of real repercussions because they can just write us off as you know. nobody's the women are seeking unspecified damages they also want an apology and the destruction of any videos Franco and his partners still have from their time in the class in response to the lawsuit James Franco's lawyer issued a statement that reads this is not the first time that these claims have been made and they have already been debunked the statement continues James will not only fully defend himself but will also seek damages from the plaintiffs and their attorneys for filing this is scurrilous publicity seeking lawsuit Elizabeth Blair.

Yeah. Dirt if there's money in it. Yeah. And. And so I met with them. I I'd issue. I go out on his is for Peter Parker and spider man, which I know that I'm wrong for but I wear my glasses button-down shirt. And I go in there. And I, you know, do great job and we get done and Francine maze. Learn the casting director said, you know, you're really great. But you're totally wrong for this part. You're six five you can't play the nerd in high school. 'cause who will we gonna find for the bully? He like, I mean, it's it's never gonna work. You're not right. She's there is other part for you the that that you right for and I said flash. And she said, yes, I said, oh, great. And I said, she's let me go find you the sides. I said I don't worry about I already off book on on those sides. Like, I don't know. I got this wild hair. And like you knew you more suited for flash you prepare. Maybe it'll go that way. And so I actually wore another show like a t shirt on underneath my down. So I think the button down off the glasses off. And then did my flash audition right there, a little more bicep little, yes. And and she said, okay, I want you to meet Sam Ramey soon as I was done. I want you meet Sam so great. Okay. I'll call your agents. So okay. Did he say, hey, buddy? When you first walked in. Or was it not till you were onset probably heats midway. Yeah. You that's that's typical Sam. And it's so the next week I got paid five hundred bucks to come in and screen test. As flash Thompson versus all of the Spiderman candidates three three of this. The Spiderman candidates James Franko was James Franco who was in the middle of shooting. James Dean, right? So he was I mean, he had he looked like James and kind of did James Dean as Peter Parker. And so that's how he and I met Scott speedmen was the was another one. And then there was another kid who I've never seen again. Who's the third one something McGuire? No Toby had a separate screen test later on after this round this one you haven't heard of his famous name, I'm sensing. So that in so so that was so I did that and the Mets AM, and he did the, hey, buddy. And and then I didn't hear again until November. But how long had passed was June June to November or anything? That's too long November. They call back and said, hey, they want you to come back again screen test again so endeavor had found out no information you missed the her day. They were going to go cast Peter Parker, then they're going to cast mayor Jane. Yeah, you're not. Then immediate role is not an immediate concern. And that was the same with James Franco. I assume as well, it's you're not getting Peter Parker. But you're not on hold. Right. Just will. Yeah. Crickets, and so then they came back around. I guess they added James. And then they brought me in. So from junior November. How'd you moved lock stock and barrel already to Los Angeles after that meeting with Ramey. I I went home packed up the car and trove out meeting Ramey. Yeah. I didn't have a job. No. You just had the promise of a future. And also, by the way, Janet the casting agent. All we could hope to do is some independent feature in the middle of Edmonton, really shake it up as far as the prosecution went that could be handled by casper van Dien from starship troopers. No, the I love it starship troopers just rewatching again, totally holds up love that one of my favorites. Wonderful wonderful. I love it. You get Bobby honestly, Joey navy get Mardian there. That's a whole. You have them be on their jury. You have smarty plane the fucking baby that before I don't think deniro makes good judge. I think it's bad cast. He's on trial. You could see him a little bit like Graham me guilty. Maybe a little bit. Because it's really the face of the big silly wig on because this candidate to him. All right. Little bit me. Defy milk me actually, men Ken lactate within with extreme stress. Good. From danger and men also can get breast cancer. So guys get your checkups thanks bringing up. No, probably. But when it came time to cast himself, Mark twitchell, just couldn't decide it's hard. But he was able to narrow it down to three. Okay. Well, we guess this gonna go. Woody harrelson. What are you Harrelson nNcholas cage and another what would be a great? Let's go with a young. Let's go with a young. Maybe James Franco time. Interesting. I haven't in front of me. So I know what it is Henry now. Okay, guy Pearce. No. Yeah. I can see it. Ryan Philipe got to. I was actually thinking Ryan. James Franco, because I couldn't think of Philippines name or if he was lucky Matt Damon got to be Matt Damon? It's a pretty good luck of its Matt Damon doing it is now it's going to be the full fat red-headed kit from the Sam line. That kid movie as to be expected twitchell's trial was just as bizarre as the murder at self see twitchell at finally given up the location of Johnny alters body on June third twenty ten about a year and a half after he was arrested. But that's only because it was all part of his defense. See twitchell fully admitted on the stand to killing Johnny alter. But in twitchell's version of the story. It wasn't his fault. The fault lied, a Frankenstein creation of twitchell's own devising that had taken on a life of its own and destroyed its creator, the whole thing could be blamed on maple maple and twitchell laid it all out on the witness stand himself during his trial. Wait, hold on his syrup. What what does the maple leaf what does that mean is conduct horsh in? I don't wanna pin on the rest of canal. Radian? I respect them. And I know that they none of the rest of them would be as hack it might as well have been called moose. Okay. What the hell is this take maple wasn't acronym? It's stood for multi angle, psychosis, layering entertainment. This guy sounds like frigging Gary Busey. All six patients appearing real fear. I honestly very in spraying extremely inspiring. Love the Beauce maple was twitchell's genius PR plan that was going to catapult him to the top because twitchell was planning to apply maple to house of cards. See his plan was to take beyond just a short film. He was gonna turn house of cards into a feature a novel an online marketing campaign, which was yet another off taken from the Blair witch project campaign that was done back in the nineties, which was sweet, which is great. I Buchan loved it, man. Original Blair witch, the campaign credit. Yeah. It was so fucking cool. The movie I I never saw it. I saw ever saw. I was watching him. Where is it scary? Yeah..
