"The Brady situation, I mean, again, it's like the Serena Williams farewell tour here. I mean, it's just you might as well just keep going at this point in forever because it's just fascinating to watch this go on. And how long can the guy do it? You know, every year we do this now, look at those 5th or 60 year in a row, maybe we've done one of these. And it's like, every year, it's like, well, this could be the hit for Brady, but then I never is. Theoretically, it must be Sunday, but I don't know. I mean, you know, he's not a world beater necessarily anymore, but he still has that good, that good receiving core. Tight end, yeah, we'll see, but gross probably overrated at this point, you know, it was probably overrated at that last point of his career. I still pretty good team. I mean, some people are picking the saints to be a kind of a spoiler team and maybe an underrated team, but I just can not buy a James Winston, Jameis Winston, a team, not to mention the fact that they still tasted a hill on the team for Christ's sake. Yeah, why do they have that? I guess it comes down. I mean, I have probably excessive animus for James Winston, but again, I will have exactly the same conversation. We could replay verbatim. What I said last year, right? Interceptions are not throwing interceptions. Is an NFL skill and Jameis Winston does not have it, right? And so, you know, you just can't have a lot of optimism about the saints. And there's just this belief that Winston's big arm and his athleticism and everything else is going to carry him at some point. At some point in the future, and it just never really happens. And so I think it would be unless this is the year that Tampa Bay that Tom Brady really falls apart. And to be honest, we have to accept that that might be the case. Right. You know, he might completely fall apart in like the third gay. Because man's 49 years old or something. And he retired, which suggests that he was, you know, that would be the one concern I would have is that, you know. And he took that time off in the middle of training camp, although my sense of it is he's just like, yeah, I don't need to be here so I'm not going to be. Right, no, I don't take away from that. I mean, I guess, you know, anything about a very collapse, it has to be the Buccaneers, right? If there's a Brady collapse, I guess it has to be the saints because what, seriously, you're going to pick the falcons or the Panthers? Defense really good to us. I mean, I don't think that it would, you know, I don't think it's impossible. I just don't trust Jamie's Winston at all. And I think in the end, you know, at best, at this point, Winston's upside is maybe an average quarterback. And we're talking about a guy who's almost 30 years old now. It's weird that, you know, this deep into their careers, Winston and Mario to find themselves as starting quarterbacks in the same division. That they're going to play twice this year, right?

"That's what i what i see him doing and and we'll see if his career pans out where he's actually more than a game manager which everybody wanted to jump. Put him in the hall of fame. So i was kind of happy to see it to be honest with you man. I know later on in his in his in his broadcast. We're going to talk a little bit about what's what's coming up for them. As wigan you talked about brady bowl you talk about that coming up. We'll doesn't doesn't look so well. I said last week you know watching the teams in east. It looks like the bills and everybody else but you know. That's that's discussion for for a later time. You know how do you feel about. sean payton how. He's decided to manage. James winston james winston threw for one twenty eight. Listen is one of those. No no no no yes yes yes. We throws the handgrenade to the end zone. It worked out in his favor. But you know we know in this league say they make you laugh. Make you cry. Yeah but i think it wasn't as reckless as that because he put the ball. You're supposed to over the face masks. you know. we're only his guy can catch that thing in the back of the end zone so i don't think it was that big that that big of a deal but what they did do as i said. It protected the football. He did throw two touchdowns no picks new ran the ball and guess what they put tastes hill in there to to run that thing in there too. So that's what they need to do. Shoot they used to play him when drew brees was out there saying give this guy more opportunities to play that position as well so i'm back on track. Yeah and and you know what you get ladder more Healthy this team will be just fine. It's you know they had the you know. They laid in a obviously that the past week but Shawn paid my money's on him. I think james is you know it was. It was unfortunate. What happened last week but You know he played much better in this game. All right. i'll tell you what rapid fire i'm gonna. I'm gonna throw three things that you see what you got for me. Okay ally bay retire. I feel about ally in the giants once again on three. Yeah i think the big thing is gonna be as eli going to be a hall of famer. We know is is jersey guy retired halftime and and that was great realize a tremendous player. He has the two super bowl rings. but right now the giants look far from a super bowl team. You know we got joe. Tough guy is is is owned. You know and and i don't get it. I will say this saquon barkley looks like he's coming back a little bit and daniel jones looks looks better and better but you know he did have the one You know sack strip sack. But he got on it in a hurry. I think this team can improve You know but again. They lost a tough one. But here's the thing they. There is no difference in those teams and they were playing the atlanta falcons. So is it a concern. Yes they do. Play the nfc east so it gives them a chance day but they got some tough opponents coming up. Listen cliff kingsbury..

"Three point performance against the saints was that the real packers or was that just an anomaly. A week one it was like preseason. It was just a bad performance all the way around. Because they're seeing the literal opposite of what they saw. Last week the saints have a top five defense even let him play very well against the padding at the panthers on the road. Yester- yesterday your team that you're not gonna have much resistance with if aaron rodgers playing the way he should be playing with the receivers these the offensive weapons that he has so. I mean at home home opener. I i can't see them not scoring thirty points. It would be stunning to me. If the packers score thirty points tonight up against the lions the question is can the lion score on the packers because manned they get torched by james winston in that saints offense so was that the reason was the problem. Was it practice. Time not taking james seriously. Whatever the reason is. We're gonna see. And jared goff in the second half move the ball on that forty nine or defense. It was all garbage time. But if you were on the law if you are on the forty niners and you were laying nine and a half points. You're sick to your stomach because of what happened late in that game. With late late touchdown they caused the lions to cover and it was just like. Are you kidding me. How did that just happen but it happened so the number here tonight is eleven and a half the same situations very possible. You can lose the game by ten points and cover thirty. Four twenty four is very possible. I'm not laying double digits. Not with the packard's rarely with anybody. When i lay double digits in the nfl in particular and primetime could it get away from the lions absolutely. Do i want to bet on it happening. No i do not wanna bet on it to happen..

"Version of alex smith type of play allah jameis winston. Something similar to say for instance. Jimmy garoppolo is doing over in san francisco because with the running game as i mentioned before one hundred seventy one yards thirty nine carries alvin kamara had eighty three yards. Tony jones junior nice compliment fifty yards three drive that started in the first half consumed nearly twenty two minutes produced seventeen points and because of that james wisden only need to throw the ball twenty one times if we can keep james sua around that ratio twenty one twenty six twenty seven times that means that the running game is working that means that the defense is doing his job and we don't need to have all of a sudden james winston go back and have memories of what it was in tampa bay now. I'm the will come a point during the season long season. Sixteen more games to go where they are going to have a multiple occasions. I think where. They're going to ask. James winston to go out and when again for them. Maybe not do it for four quarters but there might come a situation whereas like hey look ben you know You gotta go ahead. You know for this fourth quarter. We we need you. We need all of sudden start putting the ball in the air. You know. we're in trouble right now. You know they're keying up on the run and you need to start making some place so we're going to put the trust and responsibility into your hands to go out and stabilize this offense or go out and do what you need to do to keep us in the ball game at least half time so we could make some adjustments. There are going to be some games. Where james winston is going to throw thirty five to forty times a game now. How many times do you going to do that. Whatever be the situation for him to do that varied but those things are gonna happen. So the fourteen of twenty one hundred forty eight yards five touchdowns great also wonderful fantastic. Let's see you do not five touchdowns again type of deal. But let's see what we can do to zero interceptions. Let's see what we can do. More importantly offense to continue that balance. I think james winston was like. Let's win the game on steroids. That's where he threw thirty three touchdowns hidden thirty interceptions..

"I am proud of you. Two brothers man. I really great thank you. I think my dad thinks fan. I think it's james win. Four division titles Nfc south he's coming behind drew brees and he gets the chance to beat tampa bay personally when he got. Cut a trade. When you wanna call it Embarrassed kicked out. I think james winston. He's got the fruit. He's got a lot of pressure on him out. So you need a new contract. Well see i look. I think james is going to have a big year. I actually think he's going to be a candidate. For what is it most improved or comeback. Or whatever you know he. There's no reason to believe he won't i'm ryan there. He's always was offensive recreate a year at first year. Chris he put up numbers. He just got sloppy with the football. That rats correctable. That's not like you can't throw or you've never had put up numbers or anything. You know what i mean. He led the league in an office. That encouraged right risk. It no biz. Even radi had more intercepted than you had in ten years. You know what i mean. 'cause that's what that offense is. James took it to another level but has never been about whether he could play or not. You know like not. I think he's going to have a big year. I don't i don't know he's pressure him because as the caller said he wants to get paid. He wants to reestablish himself he was the number one pick to so A lot of people might feel like he's a busted this point so he wants to reestablish that but i don't think they're high expectations on him rob like i think most people aren't really expecting a lot from winston so i i think that lowers the pressure but good all right Interesting stuff we told you. This is the story that won't die. There's new information. Coming out about. Ben simmons situation if philadelphia. We'll get to that next but first fox. Sports radio has the best sports talk lineup. "And i'm just i'm just not sure i'm not sure what how it will look but i think if if they play conservative if they avoid turnovers. Obviously it's so easy to say. Avoid turnovers. I really think this could be a high functioning offense and they'll be leaning on a great line Crew great tackles incredible line in ram check and armstead but you also have kamera. Why things have a breakout year breakout you. He's already broken out but just another great year. He's alvin kamara. We know who he is we can do and i think they play it the right way in the they have the coaching with sean. Payton that they can do a lot of different things that they haven't been able to do the last few seasons which were breeze. Now with james winston who can really drive the ball down the field so we'll see week one. They're playing green bay. That game just got a lot a lot more interesting but the saints going through some scary stuff now with hurricane ida. They've been practicing in the cowboys facility this week. We don't know if they're going to be able to play in the caesar's superdome for week one but nonetheless prayers up to louisiana hurricanes are just terrifying and they devastating there absolutely devastating. And no one knows that more than saints fans and the people of new orleans. So hopefully that week. One game.

"Update is done the end. If something's is substantial happens during the season i'll have to report on it. It'll be excited to. I'd love to see on a new team. But it is kind of wild Eating up a roster spot and just not playing for the texans who could put a valuable player who can contribute on the field in that spot other huge huge news from yesterday with depth charges. Coming out cuts cuts cuts day cuts all across leak in my last episode. I went on a huge rant. About how the saints cannot cannot cannot go into the season with tastes mill as their starting quarterback that cannot do that and My wishes were answered. We will not have to watch a tesa some hill gadget. Style offense for new orleans because james winston was named the starting quarterback. Let's go we are back jamison. James winston is back I'm so excited. I'm soza this jameis winston in new orleans era because we really haven't seen it yet and we've seen flashes. We saw an incredible preseason game that he just put together against the jaguars i mean. He really looked incredible. I think he looked incredible. He led the nfc in passer rating throughout the preseason against the jaguars on monday night. Football in the preseason. He went nine for ten hundred twenty three yards in two touchdowns to was coward. Markle's calloway by the way looks fantastic. I don't know how the saints are so good at finding these pass. Catchers late in the draft goes calloway's undrafted free agent at these huge fantasy sleeper this year but with no mike thomas for at least six weeks. Marco's cow is going to be the the number one wide receiver i know on smith is going to have a big role. Kauai five receptions. A hundred four yards two touchdowns both just incredible incredible catches. I mean one near the pylon was able to get any down. One-handed brought in to his body secured the catch. Your mother was clearly getting pass. Interfered believe they call it falling down diving leaping extending catch on a great ball from james winston. So they're already kind of developing that chemistry. And i just don't see how much went undrafted out of tennessee. Because he's really looked really really really good. And when i at first reported about the mike. Thomas injury news. I'd seen marquis calloway's name. But i'd never seen him play And i didn't know what to expect this year.

"That jameis winston is likely to be named the starter. We'll talk about. Would you draft. Trevor lawrence or jameis. Winston we'll get into that also share some. Id thoughts later on in the draft. And that's the thing if you just want to hear the segment you want to hear the emails you don't wanna hear anything else. I'm gonna put a time code in the episode descriptions. Just read the description when we start talking about. Adp just go to that time code. Which will be approximate could be with with a minute. Sometimes we have Commercials and things like that. That makes up time codes for me so i do my best. But you don't have to listen to the whole thing if you don't want to but we want you to dave gay adam for trying your best. Thank you james. Winston tried his best and it looks like he's gonna win the job and this is according to rappaport all signs point to jameis winston being named the starter. This report came out on friday morning so there might be something more concrete by the time. People are listening. Would you rather have james winston or trevor lawrence at this point i'd rather have lawrence. I'm thinking long term for the entire season. I don't think there's much of a chance of trevor lawrence getting benched surly by comparison to jameis winston and the chances of him getting it seemed apparent after the first preseason game that james would be the answer there he just throws more velocity. He's willing to take chances with the ball downfield. He was particularly good with them against jacksonville. And that was with the receivers being tightly covered downfield. So i'm i'm encouraged by what i saw from winston. This preseason but i. I know jameis winston. I've been watching him play for several years. I know that he's eventually going to turn the ball over and have a bad game. And i'm sure that at that point sean. Payton will think about making a change at quarterback. Furthermore we also know that jameis winston will not get every single snap in the offense if drew brees was losing time to taste some hill. You better believe jameis. Winston will also lose time to taste smell..

"Jameis winston qb one in new orleans as reported by adam schefter. Welcome to nfl live. It's been quite an nfl journey for james. The former heisman trophy winner entered the league. Is the number one pick by the buccaneers and the twenty fifteen draft. You go on to spend five seasons. In tampa his final season with the franchise. He became the first. Nfl player in nfl. History to throw thirty touchdowns and thirty interceptions in a season and then last season winston signed a one year deal with the saints the entire twenty twenty season as a backup throwing this eleven pass attempts all year which leads us to today with our own. Adam schefter reporting that he's been named the starter in new orleans. Beating out tastes hill for the job. All the latest on james is coming. Plus the reason someone here says the saints team is a playoff team and actually has nothing to do with the quarterback spot. We'll get to that much more. Meena kinds is here you see. Jeff darlington there. Ryan clark's in studio with me which is Scary for everybody at home. Because we're already crazy up in here depth. What more can you add on how this decision to make james. The starter was made lubbock guys look in new orleans. This was the direction that sean payton felt himself heading in the last few weeks and he got the exact thing that every coach wants. That's dealing with a quarterback competition. Got clarity in the form of an objective performance when james winston had that first half and second preseason game where he threw for two touchdowns over forty yards distance. That was all payton needed to know you. Did you feel to know that. He was making the right decision through jameis winston as his starting quarterback that deep threat that passing attack that vertical attack of more than forty yards the saints haven't had that in three seasons. So for sean payton. He got exactly what he was looking for in the perfect time to be able to name winston historic. You know what. I'm going to clarify a little bit more for jeff. Jeff is an extremely nice human. I am not jeff assaying. That got what he needed to see a definitive performance. No shawn payne. Got what he needed. That it was jameis. Winston and i know people think i come on here and i just wanna kill tastes hill but as the truth tastes them. Hills shouldn't be an nfl starting quarterback and if he's the starting quarterback of the new orleans saints they're going to waste this great defense once again in two passes in a preseason game james winston showed us something that we hadn't seen in new orleans and four years and that was with tasting hill. That was with teddy bridgewater and it absolutely was with drew brees. This is what we have been saying for year. If you can eliminate some of the some of the interceptions eliminate some of the mistakes. James can add an explosive elements his offense that we hadn't seen in forever. And that's what he got. He got exactly what he needed. Because his jameis winston now tastes him. Who can go do things that he does much better than he does quarterbacking. This is the best case scenario. You know davis is gonna throw interceptions like everyone's gonna freak out when he throws his first interception and say this is the old jamus. And i think it's worth addressing ryan. How your point about his explosive playmaking mitigates that to some degree because it comes with some risks. You know the thirty for thirty season. I know we talk about. I do think it's worth pointing out. In the two prior seasons he had thrown only fourteen in eleven. so it's a little bit overrode. i've always thought to is. His interceptions in tampa often came out of desperation. It actually that's board out by the numbers. I saw a really interesting chart from tej. Seth at this morning pointing out that more than just about every other quarterback over the last three years james's interceptions have come in situations with low expected points like third and longs ak was throwing them out of desperation. So hopefully that means he's not going to be as desperate this year and again even if he is even who throws more picks and drew brees which he will you have to understand that some of that bad comes with the good in this case and that is the upside that you clearly saw on display in the preseason last week or see everyone talks about. Kyle shanahan sean. Mcvay all these offensive minds around the league. People don't really talk about sean payton. In that way as much there could be. I think a little bit of pain that wants to prove like. I can remake a quarterback. I've still got this about me that allows me to be in the elite minds of the offensive world in the nfl. One he is in mind. I mean we absolutely. But i think you have a guy like drew brees. People sometimes place everything on him to accuracy the intelligence the work ethic and they don't really point to show him peyton and say you know what we're teddy bridgewater. The new orleans saints were five no with tastes him hill. There were three and one. And i believe that ego you're talking about show. A was why he loved tastes him so much. Let me show the world. I can make tastes hill a quarterback. Well now he gets to show the world that he can bring jaimes winston to heights that he never reached and the reason. I love doing the show with me. Is we often think the same things you did. Mean is much more intelligent. I so when she bears that no fourteen. Interceptions eleven interceptions. Now people can get off of that thirty interception season and remember in three games last year. Tom brady had eight interceptions point because it was restoring bag and they changed things and so. I'm looking forward to see jameis. Winston that's right and by the way guys sean. Payton you talk the validation that he can get through james winston. It's exactly what you just said about the bucks last year. This is a a quarterback who is primed for being remade. I think it was brett far. Who one said that. If you throw that many interceptions it means you're really good because they left you in the game for that you have. If you're gonna throw thirty picks they must have kept you in there for reasons. Which has a really good opportunity quarterback. I just wanna hit the painting thing really quick as bringing a good point about his offensive mastery. There's a reason. Why jeff and ryan were saying we haven't seen the ball aired out in three or four years drew brees used to throw it. Downfield what we've seen so far just in the preseason granted in a limited sample size it reminds me of the saints offense from like a decade. Goes it champagne is coordinated just about every kind of offense under the sun. But i think we're gonna see some of the concepts we used to see with drew brees and i'm excited about it. That should have saints fan. Salivating and waterways kickoff by the way for saturday's preseason game between the saints and the arizona cardinals at the superdome was moved up to one. Pm eastern to avoid the weather that's caused by hurricane ida just upgraded to a hurricane by the way. Let's get more nfl news with jeff. What's the latest going on around the league in handling.

"But orleans defense is not something to be played with and james switzer. Sean payton coming together not something to be played with. I'm confused yeah. I'm so so he's gosh godly man. I haven't been working so long and it's just been such a long summer that maybe maybe so so what we're saying is what what what we're saying. Is that the new orleans saints a really good the new orleans. Good enough to beat the tampa. Bay buccaneers twice last year's hard to beat a team three times. Unless you're the pittsburgh steelers and you're going on to win the super bowl and beat the baltimore ravens three times. A two thousand eight. But i digress. Okay and so. Now you're saying that jameis winston is going to open the season by beating. The green bay packers the same green bay packers were in the nfc championship last year. The same green bay packers that that have to be win. Win the super bowl or buzz this year. Aaron rodgers last year. And we're not going to say that. Jameis winston could be the quarterback of the future. I think this is exactly why. James winston is a new orleans saints. This is exactly why. James winston took a one year deal last year to learn under drew brees to have this opportunity to compete with tastes him hill for the starting job in twenty twenty one. Because this is the place with sean. Payton that understands how to groom. Quarterbacks understands how to protect quarterbacks which we watched him do with drew brees the last three years. We saw him do it with teddy bridgewater. Two years ago. We started doing time. Doing with tastes hill for four games. Last year. jamie's wizard is the future of the new orleans saints. James wants it. Plays well enough to beat the green bay packers week. One is james. Winston plays well enough to make this a playoff team to have this team that is competing with the tampa bay buccaneers. Why wouldn't he be the franchise quarterback. Why wouldn't you do. That was the heisman winner that was draft number one overall that was a pro bowler in in his second year. Be the guy. Here's what child miss last year. Tom brady during the three game. Stretch had eight interceptions. That's not tom. Brady like that's not what he does. But that was risk. No biscuit erin. Dessel bruce arians wants to do so. What did he do at that point. He changed things. They became a different team. And so for some reason. We can't listen. I've made the james jokes. I can't watch k- wait to watch the thirty for thirty with jamie. Do many interceptions as he down. That's going to be a great episode. That's gonna be a great documentary. But it's also going to finish with jameis winston finishing his career as the starting quarterback of the new orleans saints and that starts in two thousand twenty one. Yeah i tend to agree with our see in from the standpoint of this is his last shot. Let's be real. Like i talked to jay missed during training camp of two thousand nineteen his last year with the buccaneers and he said he said all the right things about how playing having biron left was as his offense coordinator one of the two black coordinated offensive coordinator in the league how that was going to help him and how he felt he understood that he was in a pivotal year. And what happened a year later. He's watching his his old team. The team that drafted him when a super bowl with tom brady like he understands what's at stake. I would hope based on what he said to germany following that really good piece that aired on sports on all that stuff a few weeks ago he gets it and let's let's think about it. I mean the guy had surgery yet. He had lisa surgery. Jamie's can see james guy. I've ever can see social. You wanna see. The nearsightedness has gone. The astigmatism is gone. Here's what a lot of us are missing excuses for that. You said i'm confused. You're on your head a little bit. You know timid trepidation. Here's what a lot of us are missing. It is nearly impossible to be a franchise quarterback for a long period of time and have extended success. The people we think about you think about tom. Brady's of the world you think about the aaron rodgers of the world thinking about the drew brees of the world. So you say the rare like the upper echelon of quarterback and then you go to people who have instant success early successor. Year-by-year success thing about the jared goff's of the world. They get paid that press still trying to see what he's going to be right at this point at this point where we stand right now the new orleans saints and james winston arnold position to win based off their defense within in the last night we have last year. Was the number one defensively. Nfl number one and number one scoring offense number one in takeaways health teams under sixteen points. A game you've got dogs on that defense. That may not be there in two or three or four years all of a sudden all the greatness that we're seeing with the new orleans saints right now you may not have that kind of leash in two or three or four years. We'll james have a great year this year. I believe he will for all the reasons that we stated. Will he do well next year. Maybe but when we talk about franchise quarterback that conversation is reserved for the few the proud the marines marine. They see what you're getting into conversations that people go coats that people opportunities to sit to to get hall of fame bust. Those were the type of names that you mentioned. You know you forget a guy like joe flacco who played for an extremely long time with the baltimore ravens and was able to get a huge deal. You forget you forget. Guys cam. Newton who was in carolina and to me for a time a period in his life cam. Newton was also a franchise quarterback you forget ally manning that ben rothlisberger that philip rivers all of these dudes were franchise quarterback so understand. What you're saying about drew brees. Is that what. You're saying about the aaron rodgers in what you're saying about tom brady. Those dudes are different. No one is saying okay. Let me just say no one. I am not saying that because of this transition because of this opportunity jameis winston ends up being a first ballot hall of famer. That's not what i'm saying. When i think franchise quarterback what i think is james. Winston was on a one year deal. Jameis winston has to sign another short deal. That james winston can play himself into getting a long term contract with the new orleans saints. That don't mean he gotta get josh allen money but it does mean that he has to have the type security that says you know what you are quarterback right now and the next year and the year after because you have shown us that you can lead us into the future. I'm not projecting jameis winston ends up having this career so resurrected by this. We forget that he thirty interceptions. Two years ago what. I'm saying his jameis. Winston can put a stronghold on this position and become the quarterback of the new orleans saints. That everybody knows that that they wear his jersey's that they say you know what each and every year james winston gives us an opportunity to go to the playoffs because no matter what we say when you're drafted number one overall you have talent when you're drafted number one overall. You have a resume. Will you have success in the league at some point. You've shown people you can do it but it's about getting in the right spot. I think the new orleans saints like you say for the next two or three years to right spot if he plays well then he does get an opportunity to be the quarterback of this franchise an issue of what you said. There's is some of those names you mentioned. I get like gold jackets. Like that's different right but the different astronaut but some of the other names you mentioned right the big bands of the world. You mentioned the joe flacco of the world. Those guys either one or two super bowls right talk about franchise quarterback to be there for five. Ten years super bowls. And i don't think james is taking this team two super bowls. And that's why yes. He's not in that. Upper echelon is not gonna be the franchise quarterback super bowls winning them going to them cam. Newton named that. You mentioned you went there right joe. Flacco won all these things. Big ben wanted jameis winston. I don't know if you can do right now. In new orleans. So here's what i've seen with new orleans. I have seen teddy bridgewater go five now. And then he goes to denver and he's in competition with drew. Lock like we've seen sean payton do some things with qb's right we've seen it. And when it comes to this competition between taste mellon james which a lot of people tell you like. Why is this even a competition. Because you know what at least you know with james. You can get five thousand yards and thirty five touchdowns it's on him to prove that he won't also throw the thirty interceptions to go along with that. This situation is tailor. Made for him as are said to come in and solidify. Yes i get it now. I can be that dude whether it's short term long term. Deal whether i win the super bowl or not at least with me. You know we have a chance or at least you believe we.

But <Speech_Male> not because you <Speech_Male> just need jameis <Speech_Male> winston to be the quarterback <Speech_Male> but because <Speech_Male> james winston earned <Speech_Male> j. earned it james <Speech_Male> winston went out <Speech_Male> and did the things <Speech_Male> you needed to see from <Speech_Male> him. "Interception and hill only nineteen of thirty two passing which is fifty nine percent two hundred nineteen yards on his nineteen to thirty two passing with one touchdown and one interception. I say this. With sean payton knowing a lot more about football than i am but look man when you're talking about the competition between james winston and Demons wasn't the taste. Nil wisden is a quarterback hill is a better football player. Hill is more of a natural athlete. Winston is a better quarterback. So you don't want championships with athletes playing quarterback you win championships with a true quarterback with a natural Playing quarterback winston is naturally a quarterback tastes hill. Is a football player. Football players. Playing quarterback do not win championships. And can we please kind of. I know everyone's gonna point to thirty interceptions. Thirty interception thirty interceptions. I get that. I understand that when you have an opportunity to get tom brady at the time. Forty two years old even though we forty two or forty three years old whenever he decided that he was interested in going to tampa bay. That you know what. It's about time that we can move away from james winston but still this is a guy who also that season in two thousand nineteen where he threw thirty interceptions. He had thirty three touchdowns as threw for over five thousand yards. Only the eighth player in nfl history to do that. Look time to change. Passing concepts of change. Rules have changed to accentuate the offense even more especially the passing game but still i don't give a damn five thousand yards. It's still five thousand yards. Thirty three touchdowns is still thirty three touchdowns and unfortunately for james winston in his family and his fans thirty interceptions is thirty interceptions. So he goes to new orleans. Resurrect this the talent. Is there the former number one. Pick for florida state. That talent is there and there's a good thing that you can chip waste there from some good things that you can polish. There's some good things that you can rebuild. There's good things that you can add onto. There's some good things about james watson's game that you can improve on. I mean this is the guy in five years the starting quarterback for the buccaneers coming out again. Florida state kirby number one draft. Pick right behind. Right ahead of marcus mariota. Well this is a guy who started all sixteen games three of his five years and in the possible eighty games that he played that he that has been there have been played. he'd played in seventy two of them. So this is a guy who's actually going to show up the high majority of times and we think about how many times quarterbacks have been injured throughout the same time period and the game that they missed because of injury. at least with james wisden. You know that this is a guy again. Three out of the five years and he was in tampa played sixteen games the one year. He missed Let me give you a one year. I think he missed two or three games..

"Season is surgery. He's got a chance to start. I think he's going to surprise a lot of people over james winston for me. Thank you for the call nick. Tj real quick. What is the. What is the hip thing that james does is that normal. And we don't see people doing it or i've never seen a few times with my man. I know dax done it too is that is that a weird thing. That's the that's the training they train with the guys out here in california is three d. Qb okay and so. That's part of their warm-up routine that all those guys and it's not just those those are just two people. But it's i can name fifteen starters at work with those guys out here in off season in. Just part of their warm-up doing sometimes you see it on camera sometimes you don't but for the most part they're all doing the same ups at least the guys that train with a three d. cube man. I gotta get with you in the off season you you get to watch all the college guys workout all the pro guys workout. I'm jealous man. But let's get back to the phones. Eric in el paso you're on the air and tours and tj. Zodda what'd you. What'd you think. Eric james surprising. Or how bad the jaguar. What was more surprising. There was no more. That was both my goodness i off new orleans needs james winston win that job so everything sean payton can do to make him keep it simple. That's great because that allows he anti some hill to be on the field at the same time allow tastes hill to take the chances and do the dynamic stuff if he can just keep jameis winston in his lane. Doing the simple stuff. Sean can scheme opportunities for them. He doesn't feel like he has to force anything. If he's had a year to be around sean payton to have an opportunity to you know assimilate that just make the simple plays be dynamic once or twice a game when we scheme it in. They could be dangerous even after losing drew. Brees i'm very excited for them. I think that adds a specific dynamic. They can push the ball down the field of a little bit more That makes them a little scary. On the jacksonville side man. Seventeen games eighteen weeks for urban meyer. Who's never lost in his life. This'll be the longest season of the rest of his career. He has not had his career. Hasn't been as long as this season's going to be for this young man. And i worried about him even making it to the end. Same thing when it comes to Trevor lawrence on the backside. Can he survive a season behind an online. That's not good and then there's not a lot of dynamic stuff happening outside for him so if he's unable to see things open he's not anticipating stuff It could be a real long year. Thank goodness they have the texans in their In their division. Because that's the only to win. They might get who that that's rough. That stuff's leading right there. They opened up. They opened with the texas. Thank you for the call. Aero they'll get better as a season progresses they'll improve in an urban meyer. all head. Coaches are a product of their assistance. Meaning if you have great assistant coaches that can really teach to game. He can develop kids and our kids. These young men. Your team is going to be better for in so that will be a telltale for me is at the end of this year. Are the jacksonville. Jaguars improving whether they're winning or not. Are they improving. Are they more competitive in games..

"Whether or not cam newton can improve on what he did with the patriots. I think this game is very important. I'm he's got the kid sitting there who's now got his number ten from high school and college instead of wearing a center jersey with fifty on it. Dude got to prove himself. He's on a very short string there in case he doesn't do well in opening three games for that team. That's been one hundred sixty five million dollars on free agents in the off season. he's going to be replaced. The freshest camp not solely because of mac. It's all about a fried thing. At this point campbell wants to race last season like the images in that this. That's that so this game is the first step. I think everybody knows eventually that will be jones. His job of but it's up to camden play the best football that he can't into that right meena mentioned it being a competition. I believe that's rule one of the patriot way. It's always about a competition. This team did not make the playoffs last year. Who is the coach of the team. One of the most competitive people out there. He's going to start. Who he thinks gives the team the best chance to win. I just wanna say real one of the patriot ways. You don't talk about the patriot off. I believe is another one. Starting week one. I think it'll be cam. We'll move by yourself to shop. Hanes whole dan graziano. He wants to see two or three preseason games before he makes a decision on james winston or pace amila quarterback since both are working their tail. So both are tailless right now would he. How do you hear no starter announce yet for the saints. I think you're trying to go in the direction of winston as much as they possibly. Can they like to put themselves tobacco situation. Where he'll comes in and situational predicaments for the for the saints as he did when drew brees was there and so if winston can continue.

"Let's get rg three back in the nfl. There's also two other things that just popped in my head. One phil rivers opening the door or not closing. The door on his career was the best news ever because we can hope is a dangerous thing but it will carry us for at least a year or two thinking phil rivers may show up somewhere and we get him back in our lives and then the clip of jamie's getting just rag doll by the By the pads. I i am so so excited for james winston on sundays. Like i'm i we. I think we have to slow. Play it though. We can't root for him to be full hilarious. James throwing pick sixes because we don't want bench. No i want him to come out there and set the set the league on fire and then have one or two slapstick worthy plays per week while he's still playing. Well there are two quarterbacks in the history of the that i think could have fit and seamlessly in the three stooges one is eli manning and the others jameis winston. He's he's hilarious to watch. He's got the best unintentional pratfalls ever. It's the best so get excited. We want him to play. Well with philip rivers thing. He said he went out of his way to say. I'm gonna finish the season. Coaching football right for my high school team right. And then afterwards al comeback so he's this is actually going to be philip rivers doing another fourth quarter comeback but this time for an entire season excited season and it's very clearly just an example of like he. He went home and he had to be a dad to nine kids for the first time in his life and he was like yeah. I don't think i'm retired yet. There's a lot. I think i probably could use some time in the office. Yeah right at the end of summer when school hasn't started back up and he should be at camp. Yeah he's like oh man. "Decided in training camp. Mets who's the heir apparent drew brees in new orleans. The two parties involved jameis winston and tastes some hill. All pro cam jordan. He was asked about the situation and he shared his thoughts. I do know that We have a baller jameis. Winston guy who you know can release that thing in the air. It's bombs etta james this way then. Of course you're talking about taste and you know. After last year we went through with them so known to win at high clip with them. It's going to be fun and interesting to see who ends up being quarterback if that is such a discussion is beyond my pay grade in. I like to say not. Many things are beyond my pay quote right there to finish it off darlington. What's the window one. The saints need to make the decision on their starter by the way. It ain't beyond his pay grade but look. We have incision to make pretty quick guys. Because you do have to quarterback score polar opposites of one another in him hill unorthodox quarterback in the conventional james winston. Sean payton you'll need to do this as fast as possible. So we can continue to build that offense around the quarterback. This is not a traditional quarterback competition in new orleans but it is one that right now feels dead heat down. The middle of sean payton tries to figure out which will be week one starter. Swag you know sean. Payton if you were sean payton. Who do you believe should be the starting quarterback in new orleans. It would be dame as wisden. Because i can keep a lot of what i with. Drew brees expound on that with the explosiveness of his arm and obviously we know the elephant in the room. When it comes to james will take care of the football but if he does this offense can be more explosive than it was last year with drew brees and i know that saying a lot and i get a sense that sean payton would prefer have tastes of yield in the role that he's been in because that makes them very difficult to stop from an offensive standpoint. So when i look at this situation with jameson year away. Able to digest sean. Payton with the veteran show everybody in his league that he can play at a high clip. A you look at the people surrounding him possibly a healthy michael. Thomas alvin kamara. Obviously being there. I believe jameis winston will be the starter and i think he's going to have a lot of success and don't sleep on the saints because tampa is in division guys. Don't sleep that's right. Thank you thank you. Listen when i think about this. It's gotta be jameis winston. Not not only. Do you have a quarterback. And i get the interceptions in tampa bay. But let's not forget. The coach he played for in bruce arians in tampa bang. No risk it no biscuit right. He wants to push the ball. He wants quarterbacks to take chances. Jameis winston did not do what he was supposed to do when he was in tampa bay. Sean payton does not have that mentality. I have played in super bowls against shawn. He will dink. And don't you to death. Whatever you give him. He will tell his quarterback this what we're going to take that will play and benefit jameis winston in this offense now you allow tastes them hill to be what he has been for your offense the last few years and only get better now. You have more weapons on the outside. Now you have more weapons in the backfield. All of those benefit the entire football team as long as james winston protects a football in. Sean payton offense not bruce. Arians offense the offense. He's playing in now. This team is one to be reckoned with. So when i look at this to me. it's gotta be winston in less clearly tastes them hill. Outplacement him at quarterback which i just don't think he's gonna have to listen. You say what you want about. James winston do could spin it about as good as anybody in the game right. He can throw that thing. He's got an absolute can be so so it's the interceptions that have been the knock on him. But let's not forget the differences in the entirety of the offense so swagger. I'm gonna make the case for tastes million. You can just shredded if so light but last year winter saints you will when the saints lost breeze. They turn to taste some hill. Not jameis winston. And i know that had a lot of mon- on twitter with the saints. Restructuring tastes them hills contract and putting four void years in there but there were some method behind that madness. The boilerplate is in place if he balls out and they tried to extend them next. Offseason is there any chance in your opinion to the saints. Do turn to taste of him. Baby face you just trying to break the fight up but you got caught in the middle of the blows first of all when the beatles that in four games spritz okay the four teams that they played up. I mean my high school senior. We've gotten rid of the fourth quarter lead. The second thing is this man and to your point like i believe peyton led a little bit of emotion. Get him to put them in the game because he felt responsible to put him in the in the game and see what he had and giving them an opportunity to based on conversations. The other part of this is then. Teddy bridgewater go five or note or something like that when he came in for drew brees. So listen jameis. Winston under sean. Payton where we've seen other quarterbacks not have a lot of success but play at a high enough level to steal win games. Jeff saturday and i believe that jamie was mr. We'll take that to the next level. Apparently wise in the eagles wrong plenty of again at some point again. Go ahead jeff. Saturday real quick. I feel how many passes did hill. Complete against the broncos. I help you nine. The whole lot of quarterback play in that game his best. But it wasn't like required to lay the broncos and the broncos that game play with my son at quarterback hey kendall hidden now we gotta move forward a one more thing and we're going to go for the colts listening tweeted. We have a generous fifteen dollars. Buy you like a beer on nantucket swagger. What are you doing with your money and you can look at that. I see right there about three bucks we can. I don't know if we can zoom in on that. But i really handsome looking at this man a mask or pay. Hey hey you know my favorite part. That's three dollars four that made on my rituals dining three dollars zero dollars. If you got a swag you got your bonus pay because we have about fifteen seconds levin show. Well i mean for the sake of the show and trying to make friends. Because he's terrible. Take about any hill. I'm gonna put in the game playing put a coat. I think they went over. "They win games and then in the next offseason, Sean Payton wants a sign. Jamis Winston. It tells you that he's not all in on taste of it tells you that he wants a security blanket that look, maybe maybe Sean Payton really believes if you give me a full off season, and I can dictate the offense of terms around tastes and hill that he could be a starting quarterback, and I just want to make sure if he goes down, we've got a good starter behind us. And James Winston, is that That's hard for me to believe that you would spend free agent money on a good starting quarterback and let's face it. I mean, Jamis Winston is a guy that they turn to immediately when Drew Brees was injured. The moment he goes down. They don't go to taste of hell for the rest of the game. They go to Janus because he fit the offense better and cleaner and they didn't have to rework everything around them for the game. And also remember how much that Sean Payton was having in hiding about who was going to be a starting quarterback that week. Was it gonna be Jamis? Was it gonna be tasting Hill? There is something there that is both parts hesitation about giving tastes of the full offense full time and The hesitation toe push Jamis away. He wants Jamison the phone. And he sees the potential there and he sees what he could make out of Jamis Winston and it is possible. Also, guys That there was this belief from Sean Payton. That said, You know, we think he could be more than a part time quarterback and Taysom Hill and then they got Jamis and said. No, You know what? He's a better thing. They had already signed taste with that contract that had him in the system for so long and then looked at James has had not. You know what? No, no. We can't get rid of Jason Jamie's because he actually fits this whole thing better. I just find it very interesting because all signs publicly pointed to taste of being the guy this offseason. No questions asked at the same time gonna be happy doing so And now suddenly that plan is off kilter and it's we want we want both of these guys. We will pay for both of these guys. That's interesting. Maybe upon the phone today 55 to 1 to four, CBS. 855.
How the Tampa Bay Buccaneers upset the New Orleans Saints to advance to the N.F.C. championship game.
"Drew brees tom. Brady eighty five years worth of quarterbacks second quarter at six three saints and then dan fish huge mistake by brief. Yeah first of all the internal pressure and second of all the physical. Play at the line of scrimmage by murphy bunting getting physical with the receiver michael thomas undercutting that outraged by drew brees. That throw was a huge tone. And that. I love the to mike evans big body in the red zone. Stay in between the quarterback and defensive back touchdown tampa bay for cash in ten six tampa ensuing drive seats trying to respond. This is james winstons. First career playoff past and dan take a look at the triggering. Yeah love the beautiful design and then trey smith leaking down the middle field. But this is really about everyone paying attention to alvin kamara. Watch the tailback in. How many blocks defenders run that way. They lead tricon smith on blocked out here. You big cat. Take great play designed by matt. Nagy that sean payton carries over to yesterday saints thirteen. Ten is the advantage there. Bucks get a field goal. So we're tied up at halftime first. Possession of the second breeze to smith again beautiful. Throw we've seen so much by drew. Brees that incites thought. Fade carry into the sideline touchdown new orleans but then later in the third dan. This play changed the entire game. It's incredible winco junior yet. Tampa new orleans wins. The right they get that slant because it's man coverage but just watch that right hand come in on that back side punch to finish that playoff for tampa bay's defense. That ball bounces right to their defender to huge turnover for them saints turnovers and the bucks cashing in. That was the story of the game. Here's brady that's leonard. Four bucks tied up at twenty cook knows. That mistake was critical. Comes another one dan. Although this one clearly seems to be miscommunication yeah really. It's really just trying to get a vertically route to evan chimera out of the backfield but what happens is never liked. Does a remarkable job of playing with vision onto drew brees patient and then no wasted movement snaps drives on that football before kamera ever turns around and drew knows that was a terrible decision. Saints third turnover leads to this brady takes it himself. Tom brady giving the bucks a thirty to twenty lead. Only the rap isn't excited about it and one last chance now. Desperation time for freeze. That is tipped in the air. And that is all she

"Chavis Winston's future again on Sunday the season ended why him throwing a pick six on the first play of overtime in the loss to the falcons he becomes the first member in NFL history of the thirty thirty club at least thirty touchdowns and thirty interceptions in the same season you know the expression the enemy of great isn't bad the enemy of great is good Jameis Winston is good I don't think I'll ever be great if we were running any organization ESPN NFL team what would we want what attributes would we want in our leader to me its dependability its reliability I think he's high character I think it's important and but to me that's a fatal flaw he's been a week for five years yes AT a career interceptions without that dependability I think his ceiling is to be good and not great how sorry how does it affect your decision making at quarterback from GM standpoint when your do you have to look at what's out there absolutely I think it's the axiom Jason as you want to win for today and develop for tomorrow and again Bruce Aaron's took the job he was very clearly I'm gonna ride with James Winston on the make him better but at some point you have to say Hey you know what we have to react to what we're seeing so I wouldn't franchise him and the result would franchise in is who's going to pay him a lot of money coming off of the year they just threw thirty intercepted right that's the thing I I don't mean we're talking almost thirty million dollars on a franchise tag right so I mean I think they can get a deal done for less than that well I I would need to get the deal done I mean it's right for me my I'm not signing on a big jet one of the worst things you can do when you have your hand on the ball every player's turn it over and he does it more than anybody I can't rely on that even offer me a deal and by I agree to this a further as a former player I always felt like I was a GM you guys will hold me accountable if we pay him a lot of money we're saying that turning the ball over is
Are the Houston Texans a strong Superbowl contender?
"But this morning the Texans or early this afternoon they went twenty three twenty the first question I brought up is first of all Texans they're not like the other three might not even be like the other two they're not like Baltimore other not like Kansas city they're not like the patriot style you got to wonder what happens when they meet in the playoffs if they do I don't have this confidence that this team is a Superbowl could the other no I'm totally with the army and listen even last week when they did beat the tie ins to kind of take control the division if you look at the box score the tie ins out gained in the tie ins maybe for big chunks were the better team and even today against Tampa Bay it was just one of those deals where you keep waiting for them to completely dominate if your a real legitimate contender yeah I know they jumped out to that big lead you got it you got to put the put your put your foot on the throat of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers so I am totally on board with you I know they just beat the patriots a few weeks ago I get it I don't think they're in that case see Baltimore even New England tear because obviously they would have to go to New England in the case of a playoff game I'm a hundred percent with you on that and and by the way how do you only score twenty three points when James Winston is the ball over to you like or intercepted run one back for a touchdown and and and you go ahead and you always scored twenty three points that that's very concerning it is a hundred percent I mean listen the the offense struggled all day today and I understand it was an early kick off and it's a short week and it's a Saturday but it's it's like I just said a minute ago we are now at the time of the year where you need to be playing your best football I just don't think the tech the Houston Texans are doing that right now so I'm with you a hundred percent on them and part of it was listen James was that all that stuff but independent of James being bad that was a chance for them to make a statement they didn't I I I'm I just I've been very underwhelmed by them like I said I know they beat new in that a few weeks ago but I've been under one with
Dr. David Chao talks injuries
"Dr Child always good to have you aboard for the show. Thanks for having me. So when we look at some of the injuries that kind of flakes of the skill position talents We had a big one again in Tampa and it seems to be history repeating itself last week we talked about Mike Evans. His hamstring hamstring the season ending scenario. That played out there. Lo and behold Chris Godwin goes down with what looked like a similar injury last. We saw him carted off in the tunnel in Detroit. Coincidence there is there something going on in Tampa as it pertains to their wideouts in their hamstrings as we get into the tail end of the season they run them ragged and they throw the ball lot. That's probably the only Only Lincoln Yeah and if you really WANNA go conspiracy theory Mike Evans last week. You Scott Miller Another wide receiver earlier in the game in Chris Godwin in early in the season Perriman had a hamstring issue. So if you really trying to go that way but I think it's just coincidence and maybe some of it is They're still slinging the ball around quite a bit Four hundred fifty yards for James Winston This week so so they were running a lot of routes and so forth as we talked about Mike Evans Hamstring with significant and with only three games left. We thought you and I are candidate. I think the same something's GonNa fall for for Chris Godwin here. You know there's only two weeks left there the bucks out of it The hamstring is probably going to be longer than that and he's probably headed into reserve so What does that mean I mean? Had you know from a fantasy site look for paramount. Because Winston's going to have to you. Who else is left? That's a blow. Be still my heart God. What has been the Horse Dr John? That's gotten me in the fantasy. Football finals beat up on her. Dear friend Clay Travis this past past week and in a massive showdown GonNa help that somebody else on my rosters able to step up and fill that void pain savior jokes. Because I know you're gonNA take cheap shots I'm not at all I'm not at all actually gonNA transition to another wide receiver with Adam Phelan. There was talks that he wasn't going to return until he was one hundred percent. Healthy Limited. Snap count this past against the chargers. What do you think that was maybe score or Israel setback therefore Adam feeling well? I think it's a original part of the plan in preparation. Maybe the seven snaps were only because of because of the score but he was never gonNA play fifty Think about it this way first of all if you look Ah. The history of what happened with Phelan was supposed to be a minor hamstring. You played it. Two weeks aggravated missed. Many more weeks. Try to come back to fast in in Practice aggravated again. So they've been burned twice with aggravation. Do you think they were GonNa be burned a third time when next week. They have the Monday night game against against the packers which is for the division and then even the week seventeen game against the division rival bears. This were the LA chargers not that you look past with them. But I don't care who it was only made medical sense to bring him back a little more slowly this type give them a few game raps so that he can and be good to go for the packers. I think you'll see. EEOC normal reps against the packers next week but there was no way he's going to see normal routes this week and so even when Schefter after said he was going to play and be fine. I never thought he would. But you know we all know coachspeak right. It's just another example of coachspeak another guy that's critical to the Vikings offensive successes. Delvin Cook suffered another shoulder. Injury couldn't return against the chargers. Obviously you mentioned the importance of the Monday night. Game against the packers will Delvin Cook play and if so how effective can you be. Well here's a good news. Bad News Bad news is he got hurt again and you didn't finish the game the bad news. It's actually a new injury and that's also the good news it's a new injury if it were the SC join again the right Septa. You'd have to say. Even when he plays against the packers he's one hit one play from being out against. This seems to be something to his left shoulder by video. I can't tell you exactly what it is. There's which sometimes good news because if he dislocated I could tell you. I don't think that's the case. I can't tell you exactly what he has. But it's new to the left shoulder and I think there is okay. Good chance I would expect that he will play and be good to go against the packers And I think that's part of where they said Look L.. Let us live to fight another day Dalvin and rest the rest of the game here in terms of feeling like they have a game in hand out in Los Angeles makes percents with a capable fill in like Mike. Boone had two touchdowns he actually had the second highest sparks score among running backs in two thousand eighteen draft only behind saquon so hard running running in athletic last Vikings Guy One ask you about. That's crucial to the defense's cornerback. Xavier Rhodes went into the chargers game with an ankle. Injury already played through it left left with what appeared to be a calf injury. Does he have a shot to play against Green Bay it's GonNa be hard Calf injuries linger CT Way Hilton. And uh-huh this even though he was GonNa want to at the quarterback position. It's pretty hard to break in driving the ball. If you don't have your staff there then you add the lingering ankle. I mean when you talk about multiple injuries and one of them being calf especially the positioning place as optimistic as I am on Dow Cook able to go. I'm not pessimistic and league's exist your roads being able to go last one. I want to ask you about beforehand it back to todd. The timeline probably doesn't work if it's a high ankle sprain but The seasons on the Line Right Philadelphia Dallas does lane. Johnson have a chance to play this week. I think he does first of all learning clean. Johnson Yasser Heikal Spring He might get some pre-game quote acupuncture to play area. I mean it's it's that big give a game and the other thing is he. You know Yes he's a tackle so he's a little more in space and I can guard. But but certainly it's easier to for a Lineman Wiedeman an offensive lineman to play through high ankle than some other skill position. So I think he's GonNa try everything you can to go. The question is If he can royal factor if you will be I think you're GONNA try all hands on deck type game coming up Sunday for the division and I know a lot of our board listeners Dr Chow who have been writing this Eagles Eagles train with the division future since the beginning of the season. So we'll all sit with wait and wait with bated breath as they go into that one against maybe resurgent cowboys team is short home underdogs but but before we get there. We do have a Monday night. Football game and clearly. The biggest injury around this contest is with. Ty held a lot of optimism through colts camp but you look through some of the lingering signs for T. Y.. Hilton this calf injury. Do you expect him to be able to give it a go tonight. And if if even tries how effective do you believe. He can be out there as a viable deep throat against the Saints Defense. Well you know. There's there's there's two two thoughts here the he will play thought and he won't play thought if you go by what the head coach says and very fulmer to him. Even Situation Frank Reich is if he plays on Monday. We'll be at one hundred percent. I E not playing short of a hundred percent. Well if that is actually true. He's not playing period. There's no way that cafeteria one hundred percent is lingered this long another couple of days. He's been full practice all all week and other days isn't GonNa Change Anything. There's no way he's hundred hundred percent for tonight's game. So we're going to stick to what Frank Reich really sad. Ty He's already told US T Y Hilton's not playing but we all know coachspeak and we all know this is. The colts is kind of last chance. They kind of have to win to stay in it to have any chance to stay in it so That may push what t y Hilton does and you may try. Try and go always interesting to see these guys and who's able to gut it out. As it becomes a war of attrition at this point in the season especially with playoff berths hanging in the balance team saw hang on for dear life in their respective conferences. You can follow Dr David Show on twitter at pro football doc like we say every week the single best source for injury information not only for your sports gambling but for those fantasy football ball championships. Although I'm going to have to cry before we continue the rest of this podcast with pain now. Knowing Chris Godden won't be available for me to go out there and win a title sort of your that gets into. Thanks as always Dr
2019 NFL Draft prospects
"We're about three weeks from the NFL draft. It's been an interesting off season. If you were bears fan last season. It was interesting the bears gone out and done a lot of things this off-season than to talk about that and much much more. We bring in our guy NFL writer, Eric at home. Nice enough to jump on and Eric tonight. Everything's good. Yeah. It was just thinking these last three weeks for the drafter get a feel like any turn into here that always does every single year seems like it takes a long time here in Chicago. We've always been interested in the draft. Because usually the bears were bad a high draft pick. And now they were smart last year and traded pigs got gotta Khalil Mack. And now they've not picking until the third round unless they make a move. But I mean, I think it seems like all their other moves have been in you know, in free agency and bringing. Players in. So it's not nearly the draft excitement here in Chicago. Like, it was when just imagine if the draft was here, and it was no bears draft pick for you know, for the first day and a half down. Admit what difficult I think it would be legal to do that. The office. Like, let's about this. The bears probably will make their selection around nine o'clock. I think on Friday night. So you settle in. You know, maybe, you know, get some food get something to eat whatever it's going to be a while. I don't think they'll be moving up. They don't have a lot of picks. So yeah, it's gotta be patience is virtue for bears fans outside of kicker because kickers not real answer. When you talk about to what's the biggest need for the bears. Hang into the draft. It's a great question. You know, I think it probably, you know, I think what they did themselves. A lot of a good favor by refunding airless, you know, and just you know for a one year deal. Right. We know he's the third outside guy. But still it just eliminated one spot that you have to kinda reach four and not reach four. But you know, have to hope that somebody is at that position waiting for you in the draft. So it probably slimmed down to two maybe three or four positions. I would think running back has to be on that list. You know, I personally would like to see. Them. Get more death on the offense of line. And I think the secondary either corner or safety would be a spot they can look at and their few defensive action, the strap that I think could play, you know, cover the flight and also places safety. So there's some versatile guys in this great year for either position a corner safety, but it's deep enough where they could possibly get somebody there. So I would just, you know, spit balling kinda Dr throwing I would say those it's likely that they could be picking one of those three spots that eighty seven toys have you ever seen as I'm asking the question. I know we've all seen it. But have you? I was gonna ask you if you've seen the situation where teams running back like Jordan Howard performed relatively well and was light by many people. And but basically the head coach had no use form at this point. And that's why they ended up moving them. Yeah. I mean, obviously, totally different situation from what happened with Levy on bell. You know, those are the exceptions to the rule, but you know, it is one of those. Position where if you're not one of the elite top, you know, five or six guys in the league at your spot. You know, there's only so much teams willing to kind of sink into that dishing. I know that there have been back strapped in the top. You know, five ten picks several years, it's not gonna have this year. But it's happened. A lot in recent history or often more often than I would've expected. I know Todd Gurley got his big deal. I know other people have gotten pretty good money. That's dishing bell sign this off season. But there's a drop off, you know. And so I think if you're not special, you know, that maybe are deemed expendable depending on the system. And so you know, I can see both sides why they moved on. And I think they feel like with Mike Davis Torri Cohen, they add one more the draft. You know, maybe Ryan dollars trading Kampe preseason hero again or something like that. But you know, we'll see I think they will try to add at least one more. And then maybe an underrated free agent to add on top of that. Daryl. Patterson is. Is an interesting guy. But he's been an interesting guys come into the league. Other people have found out ways to use them and the patriots even lined him up in the backfield as a running back. Do you expect Matt Nagy to do that? Also, not only just swing passes and give them in and around and things like that. And also given the ball out of the running back position. Yeah. It's a great option. I think you know, the patriots really the first team to really unlocked at running ability. I mean like you said when he was in Oakland, you know, other places he was running those kind of gadget runs and things like that. But I mean, they line them up as a tailback and got buffalo game was it was crazy to watch. He had twenty something carries. And so, yeah, it was it was a strange thing to think about you know, a six to two hundred twenty pound receiver who could run like the wind lining up kind of power back. But he can do it. I think that really added to the appeal. He's the perfect Matt Nagy player. They'll run kick off, you know, he could be a wide receiver if you need to. I don't think he's more than. A number four. But still, you know, having that deeper out option is important. And I think that's you know, that kinda speed if Taylor Gabriel is out there, they may not have that exact replica that so it's different version of speed. And then as you said we saw last year that he can be running back, you know, in cut a break glass in case for -mergency situation. Seahawks quarterback. Russell Wilson wants a new deal. He gave the Seahawks April fifteenth as a deadline to get that deal done. Do you think he gets done in what type of deal? Do you think Russell Wilson who get from the Seahawks? So here's my hypothetical question here. Like what they let's say if April sixteenth by parents diversity, by the way. Let's. Let's say April sixteenth. They offer him. The richest TV deal of all time. You're gonna say oh sorry. The deadline. Hey, understand that this thing happened in January. We didn't really hear about it until very recently. But meeting his, you know, giving them a deadline, but you know, it just doesn't make a lot of stints. It's not a if something magical happens on that calendar day, not as some kind of contract, you know, bonus kicks in or anything else that would prevent them from getting this thing done, or if there's some kind of you know, league deadline or something like that. It's not July fifteenth and the franchise player, so it's just one of those kind of subtle threats from the from the Wilson camp saying, hey, don't forget about me, baby. You know, I still want to get my deal. I still want to get this thing done. You know, there's an opportunity for him to really cash in. And also kind of hold them hostage a little bit. I suspect it there's a good chance that gets done. But for months now there have been whispers that you know, maybe the Seahawks aren't quite prepared to pay him. What what a lot of people think he's worth it would at least entertain the idea of. What could we get you know, trade for him? Just theoretically, what would he get you know, is worth three first Thursay? We're still talking about a thirty thirty one year old guy. And there's still a handful of teams that really badly need that franchise different speaking quarterback. So I I don't know. I still think it's gonna get done 'cause that's city loves them. Even if a lot of past teammates were the biggest Russell Wilson fan. They know how much he means for the team another couple minutes with NFL writer, Eric at home and Erica week or so ago, rob gronkowski decided to retire. A lot of people on Twitter and everywhere else going, okay. The best tight end. Maybe you'll ever play the game has retired. Who's the best tight end in the NFL? Now who do you like? Yeah. I mean, that's a great question. To kinda depends what you want. So if you guys can do with grunk did which is being impact players blocker, and as receiver, you know. And and think about all the calls that were made against gronk over the years. He was kinda like the Cam Newton of the tight end position like say what that's not interference. Though, he just, you know, even with that work in Gascony was so special. I love the fact that Travis Kelsey can be as dangerous, you know, the last couple of years he's actually been a better receiver than gronk. No question about it. But he's not nearly the blocker that he is. You know, we see some of these young pass catching tight. I mean, George Kittle out in San Francisco at times has flashed like he could be the best to way tight in the league because he blocks his tail off. He's got great receiving chops. And really the only thing that's kind of held them back injuries. I don't necessarily think you can have a long career. So this might be one of those debate that we kinda have for years. I don't think there's any one guy that fills that checked off all the boxes like like gronk did. And he had injury issues too. But still when he was out there. There's really no doubt. And I don't know that that that one guy even though there are some great blockers. It's about staying receivers you rarely see both. Do you think that Jason Witten can still be productive? I don't know man this. I wanted to I know Jason Witten the player, it was outstanding. He was just so consistent day in and day. I knew what you're going to get from. He was probably, you know, he was unsexy version of gronk and that he could block and catch fast but a year off his age. I know they say they're going to come in just and all that. His feeling this thing could kind of turn south, and we could see 'cause he looked slow by the end when he was out there last time. He just wasn't the same guy. Eric, we appreciate jumping for few minutes. We'll hopefully those go to slow the next couple of weeks. We'll talk to you soon. All right. Enjoy the run up to the draft guys. Thanks. They got home jumping on talking NFL. Like Whitten wasn't good at the end. Then like fancy players, look like, wait. Hold on. Really? Like, what is she some Witten really gonna bring to the Cowboys? Here's a guy wanted to bring up to you. Because this is a guy that I thought when he got to the NFL was going to have a bigger impact than he's head and OJ Howard at the tight end. Okay. Because what we saw in college. We thought. Okay. The when this guy gets here Dowd using is just because the quarterback situation and the problems have had do you think he can still become a dominant tight end in this league? Maybe because he did it in college. And you assume that that body type in his speed is is ability to get down field. And you know, James Winstons been not very good. No. And I think a lot of people misread what Tampa Bay is doing. I don't think he's there for the long haul. I think Tampa Bay if they could find someone else to be their quarterback. They would go with that person. Yeah. So whether or not it's trying to find a quarterback in this year's draft. Or or or planning for the future? Elsewhere. But like I don't trust him as Winston do.
Jimbo Fisher Coaching Record
"Kevin someone to me just sold out that program for one player in that you, you know, better than I do that doesn't ever work no sedan. Not does not. And I think that I think coach Fisher was called it. The same problem at say totally agree with you on that of the quarterback there. He I I like, JIMBO Fisher. But I never understood that because Florida state was bigger than James Winston. It was much bigger. You know? It's not it's not about the person. It's about the institution. And about school. You know, you got to have you've got to put that for a you're going to be in serious problem. I
Panthers owner David Tepper told reporters that quarterback Cam Newton sitting out the entire 2019 season could be an option
"The other item. I want to get into his Cam Newton. Now, David Tepper Ono for the Carolina Panthers. Basically alluded to Cam Newton maybe possibly having the sit out the next season. Just so they could prioritize getting him one hundred percent healthy. I love Cam Newton. Cam Newton is a star athlete stud athlete. But one could argue Cam Newton. They really learn how to throw the football until the season. When north Turner was his office coordinator because he's complete six sixty seven percent of his passes this year, whereas throughout his first seven years in the National Football League, he never completed better than sixty percent of his passes. And even that was only one time at sixty percent. So I'm not talking about moving off from Cam Newton in terms of all my Lord. He's finished he's done, etc. Etc. I'm talking about a plan b. You know, it was Cam Newton wanted to run the football when he got popped by TJ watts on over eighty I believe it was against Pittsburgh. All right. And he got hitting that show. It wasn't the same sense. An appearance was six two at that time. When all of those things happen to Cam Newton. We saw that. But it was Cam Newton that insisted on running for boy was Cam Newton didn't wanna take the capable of superman. It was Cam Newton had a problem with coach Ron Rivera for wanting to streamline and dissipate. Those running plays for his star quarterback. It was Cam Newton for that. So is the way you wanna play. But the reality is is that. One could argue. They Cam Newton. Just as a great pocket passer. He's never he never has been career. Why? It eight say ESPN, it's inundate seven to nine three seven seven six about a way, you know, what next year? I mean think about the quarterbacks that are going to be mentioned, Nick foles. You don't want him because he's getting a long term deal. He's gonna have his pick of the litter. I'd say go to Jacksonville, you consider it. You got teddy Bridgewater. You got Joe flacco. One year. Gotta get Ryan Fitzpatrick why Fitzpatrick going to Carolina for the year and do damage. That's okay gets back. What? He was looking pretty damn good until cutter decided to put in James Winston. Worth consideration
Eagles' Wentz has stress fracture in back; no surgery needed
"Recovery. Time estimated three months outta college football and plenty of ball action today, Las Vegas bowl number twenty one Fresno state basing, Arizona state, Fresno state, head coach Jeff Tedford sizes up the opposition understand going into this game. We're playing a great football team. Very well coach in all areas of the game, very explosive. It's gonna be a battle. We understand that we have a lot of respect for the Pac twelve conference and Arizona state. And you know, they played very very hard kick off at three thirty eastern time. I'm Peter Schwartz. Football season. Which is why you need Sunday morning football tomorrow at ninety s- turn with me DA on CBS sports radio. Hi, this is Dan Patrick catch me. Weekday mornings seven to ten on the home of the best sports talk in Colorado. Xtra sports thirteen hundred. He's arena he calls. It. The bullpen. Come late in ten. Hang brew. Another hour. We add the booze show us. Adam the bull back our number three. Adam the bull of you here on CBS sports radio. And we're coming to you live from the Quicken Loans studios. National mortgage lender. Quicken Loans apply simply understand fully mortgage confidently. We'll continue our NFL conversation. Sam Monson pro football focus lead analyst Sam how you doing? What's going on buddy? I'm doing great excellent. You know, it's funny this week. I heard I don't know if you heard this. But. Greg Williams who to me. Why don't really work in Cleveland locally in the week? And I have no desire for Greg Williams to remain the long-term coach Gregg Williams. I think he's about as old school is old school gets and he referred to some advanced analytics this week. And I almost was brought to tears Sam because well, I think I think that all sports need to have a good balance between old school scouting and new school analytics you'll so many old school football guys are so hesitant look where we are in baseball. Now. Right. The sport is completely run. Everybody has an analytics department in basketball and football is dragging their feet a little bit more in some organizations, but the here an old school coach like Greg Williams referred to some advanced analytics. That was that was wild for me to hear it must have. I don't know if you heard it. But it probably would've made you happy. If you did. Yeah. I think you're right football is behind baseball. And how that kind of stuff is gone, but everybody understands that it can help you how you present it to all of these people know, so head coaches are often the last guy to get on board. But it's because you need to present it to them in in the right away. Now, there's a ton of ways that say the PS database can help is those guys. But if you come to them initially where you know, something they don't wanna hear they're not going to buy. But if you immediately show them something, you know, a fancy pretty grasp the chosen exactly what they've been saying for years, suddenly they're all on board. So I think a lot of teams the league you're just starting to sort of see this time where the analytics guys or people that have been using the stuff within the Bill. Building for years are finally starting to figure out how to present it to coaches added presented to general manager is and you know, the guys bad again in front of the media. And that's when you're starting to see this filter out. I think it's been used a lot within the building for years already. But now we're starting to see those guys use it on a daily basis and get the headline stuff sent to them in a way that they're they're much more comfortable with gesturing at an and actually taking it on board. We're talking with Sam Monson pro football focus lead analysts Sam. Baker Mayfield has had a tremendous season. As a rookie as put up some big old school numbers if you will. But when when you went from a pro football, focus perspective when you guys run the numbers on what he's done. How would how does he great out compared to some other rookie quarterback's of the past? Yeah. I think you do need to go to quarterbacks with a pass because he hadn't shoulders above any other rookie season right now. He's a top ten grade quarterback in the NFL. He's tense overall. Just one physician behind Russell Wilson. So you're already talking about it really really well graded player right off the five. And obviously pro football focus was very high invade your Mayfield coming out were the guy is the winter by for him saying that he was the best prospect in this draft in it really wasn't close to the next guy. I think so far. That's that is being born out. We have seen better performances in the past rookies. I think that twenty twelve season was a pretty incredible year for rookie performances. Obviously it didn't last because RG three in particular had a phenomenal season that year, and then tours and really hasn't been the same player since. But you know, Baker Mayfield is looking as good as we've seen any rookie quarterback. Look probably dating by twenty twelve season. We're seeing some really impressive play from him. And I think his play generally has been better than even the statistics suggest because you had one of the highest rates in the NFL right five and drop rates. And unlike most of the times when a receiver drops the ball, it's an incomplete passes. It's not doing that much damage to your passer rating, or whatever but Baker mayfield's have multiple assets that have been hit his receivers and my hands and ended up as interceptions. So those are taking a sledgehammer to operating over the course of the season. It's ninety three. Point four right now. And this is a season where passing is exploded operating ninety three point four is nice great at the moment. But it's his performance has been way better than that. We're talking with Sam Monson lead analyst pro football, focus Sam, let's talk about another rookie and that saquon Barkley who probably be battling Baker Mayfield for rookie of the year. From an offensive standpoint. There's been other good rookie running back but saquon Barkley make over two thousand total yards this season. How does he compare to Todd Gurley Leonard four nets and some of the other big rookie seasons from running backs? Yeah. I mean saquon Barkley just moved into first edition CFS running back rankings. He's the the number one guy right now through the through part of the season. He's been incredible. He's been everything that everybody who was championing him saying he would be coming out. I think he's been better than we thought. He might be there. The idea that he was a perfect running back prospect that don't think really holds up work holes in his game in particular. This tendency to to be a bit. Reggie Bush in terms of wanting to balance everything outside to look for that clay, but he's gotten a lot better in his first year at not doing that at taking ugly yards when they're there. And that's all there to be had. And it's still maximizing goes explosive plays getting huge games. Those are there. So he has been fantastic. I think again he's been as good as any rookie running back the receipt for a number of years. Really? He's I guess he's played as well. As Alvin Kamara did last year as a rookie on he's done more fulltime base. So he already has you know, two hundred more snaps than Kamara managed all last season playing that same kind of rate is Amari Cooper. Has memorial Cooper's play been much better. Or is just a the players around him made him much better. I think it's a bit of both, you know, playing wide receiver it so difficult to play. Well, if the ball isn't coming in your direction off the ball is coming in your direction in attachable manner. Having you can do about it. There's only so much fancy route running against air. You can do if the ball isn't coming your way. So I think we're seeing Amari Cooper was always a quality route runaround player that would get consistently open. And now we're seeing what happens when you target that guy. He's still a very good player and I play put up big numbers. And obviously, that's that's meaning that his greatest better because he's being given the ball and that talent is being maximized. So you know, I think that that was always there that that talent that play was always inherited his game. Even in Oakland. The raiders just weren't making use of it. We're talking with Sam Monson pro football focus lead analyst. Sam. I know you guys today had an article about projecting Cuyler Murray's pro potential. I'm curious because obviously he's a top ten pick and major league baseball. He's giving compared to Ricky Henderson. He signed a four and a half million dollar bonus. There would have to give it back obviously at a even a better year than Baker Mayfield did this past year in college, which is hard to believe. But obviously, you know, people make a thing about the thing about Baker mayfield's hike, which I thought was over rated. But obviously calamari isn't even close those big as as Baker Mayfield. A what is his potential d do you think he could be a good NFL quarterback? I think he could be, you know, you're right people that the highest the big question Mark because people did make an issue out of Baker Mayfield. Tighter on Baker Mayfield is short for an NFL quarterback. But not, you know, it's not unprecedented. We've seen quarterbacks Baker Mayfield type successful in the past. They're not obviously, not as many as there are as you know, six with three quarterbacks, but those guys have existed and they've been good in the past. I don't I don't know that we've ever seen quarterback that is Kyla Murray's Hite house significant success at the end up, right? You know, he is going to be when we get the official number on him. If it ever gets that far he's going to be significantly shorter than even a guy like Russell Wilson. And you would be in legitimately uncharted territory. When it comes to that. Now, if you're going to do that, you have to be there has to be something else to say, well, okay. That's not going to be a problem because of this and his grading has been incredible. His is great this season at Oklahoma has been basically everything is as as good. As Baker mayfield's grade had been on that was the best we've ever seen from a quarterback, right? The best seasons we've ever seen at college with one of his own. So he has a level of the best play. We've ever seen coming out of college from a college quarterback. And we've been doing this going back to two thousand fourteen but we've seen some pretty good quarterbacks over that's fine. You know, we went back, and we also graded James Winstons freshman seasons. We have got Carson Wentz you got Jared Goff. We've got right. And they got all these guys and Carl Amari stacks up to those guys. Sorry.
Fitzpatrick or Winston: Who will start for the Tampa Bay Bucs?
"To footballs and entertainment business, and you have to convince the fans to part ways with money time. And and emotion. Loyalty dedication to the team. What are the people in Tampa? Think of Ryan Fitzpatrick versus Jameis Winston, right? I mean, I saw a bunch of beards. I didn't see anybody eating ws in the stands on Monday night. I saw a bunch of beards on Monday night. Do the Tampa Bay fans want Fitzpatrick or do they want Winston, and and coaches can say we ignore the outside of baloney. If you ignore what your fans want what the people who pay the bills want what the people who either show. Show up or don't want the people who either clamor for you to be fired or clamor for you to get an extension want. Then you're stupid. You have to listen to what the fans want, and you have to be communicating with the fans, you have to be doing focus groups and surveys, and you have to have your finger on the pulse at all times of what the people want because that's a factor. It's not the deciding factor, Chris. But if there is a clear momentum for Fitspatrick, you can't move to Winston you can. But you have to do it at your own risk until there's that clear move among the fans to go with James Winston.
