House Republicans booted Minnesota democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar from the foreign affairs committee over comments she made about Israel that some Republicans deemed anti semitic speaker Kevin McCarthy defended the move. We're not removing her from other committees. We just do not believe when it comes to foreign affairs, especially the responsibility of that position around the world with the comments that you make. She shouldn't serve there. Ahead of the vote Omar said it was no surprise the new GOP majority was targeting her and her voice in Congress won't be diminished. House democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries called the move political revenge. And several House Democrats are now calling out speaker McCarthy to create a select committee to combat and not anti semitism amid a spike in incidents in recent years. The judge and the Alex Murdoch double murder trial decided that Murdoch's prior bed actions can now be admitted in court. News nation talked with trial attorney Brian claypool about that judge's decision. He says it was a good call. All of his finances are in question, and that really arguably does go to the motive for him killing both. Murda is acute Murdoch is accused of killing his wife and son in June 2021. "And so beyond the only midday show. The next star media group station. It's 39°, mostly cloudy at 2 o'clock, good morning. I'm James Sears. The Illinois House takes up an assault weapons ban today. Again, plus why the federal government could ban gas stoves. WGN traffic, looking right now at the Stevenson, there's an exit ramp closed due to an accident Stevenson north at cermak road. Everything else is looking good at this time. The Illinois Senate late Monday voted to pass assault weapons ban legislation. The Senate had made changes to the legislation passed by the House, but intends to negotiations resulted in a mostly unchanged Bill. It now goes back to the house for a vote today, then governor pritzker's signature, WGN political analyst Paul lisnik. But pritzker didn't get it in time for his inauguration. He's probably disappointed in that regard, but ultimately he will get it. And I think his new term kicks off with an assault weapons ban in place. The Senate president on Harmon believes the new law could withstand legal challenges from gun rights activists. Well, before he took the oath of office, governor pritzker signed a bill that includes a pay raise for lawmakers, also legislature and agency directors. House and Senate members will see their pay increase from 70,000 to $85,000 per year. The governor said he initially wanted lawmakers to only give agency directors a raise, so Illinois could be more competitive with other states in the country. I'm focused on the executive branch, but I can say that they haven't had a raise for really since before the Great Recession. So I can see why there's an interest in doing that. The bill also says that 7 and a half percent of the state's annual general funds go toward the rainy day fund, which is up from 5%. A $16 million settlement was announced Monday for the families of three women who died in a north side apartment building during hot weather last year. At this time, residents of the James Snyder apartments in Rogers park said management refused to turn off the heat in the building despite unseasonably hot weather. Megan O'Connor is an attorney for the families. The settlement, the lawsuit. It sends a message if we can even prevent one more death in a similar situation and we've really done our job. "Group station. WGN radio news is on the air, good morning. I'm James Sears at 1 o'clock. Downtown Chicago alderman call out a lack of transparency in securing a NASCAR street race and a settlements reached over COVID vaccine religious exemptions. WGN traffic, the expressways in hallways in the area are looking good at this early hour. The three Chicago aldermen are not all in with mayor lightfoot's plan to turn grand park into a NASCAR raceway next summer, downtown council members, Sophia king pet dowell and Brendan Reilly are drawing up legislation that includes aldermen in the special events approval process. Now they're also concerned that their constituents will be inconvenienced for two weeks next summer, Riley joined Chicago's afternoon news. That was a revelation. That was not initially disclosed the length of time would lose the park. So that's concerning. I do hope that they will make public all of those key details of the contract. So the public can judge for themselves, whether this is a good deal or not. Mayor lafitte was asked about long traffic shutdowns. I don't think that's accurate based upon the planning I've seen. Certainly, in the days leading up to and the days immediately after, there's a period of time where the construction is happening and then the deconstruction happens. Life says the spider report that roads could be closed for a month. She said the city will work with NASCAR the way they do with Lollapalooza and other Vince downtown to reduce inconvenience as much as possible for city residents. If you live in Lincoln square police are warning to stay alert after an attempted hold up turned into a home invasion and more. They say a man pulled a gun on pedestrians in the 4600 block of north Campbell a week ago Saturday when they couldn't give him the cash he demanded, the gunman forced them inside their home and searched for their valuables. He then ordered his victims to drive to a nearby ATM after getting the cash he returned to the victim's residence and stole their cell phones before taking off. Police have only released a vague description saying the gunman wore a black ski mask and white shirt. The Chicago Tribune reports that north shore university health system has agreed to pay a $10.3 million settlement in a COVID-19 lawsuit over religious exemptions during burn field reports. The lawsuit was brought by employees who alleged the hospital system wouldn't let them keep their jobs after they objected to getting the COVID-19 vaccine for religious reasons. 14 workers, which included nurses, a pharmacy technician and a senior application analyst, sued north shore in October, alleging that they were refused true exemptions from the mandate. North shore is not admitting to wrongdoing in the settlement agreement, which must still be approved by a judge. North shore is also agreed to rehire the fired workers. Jordan burnfield, WGN news. Mount Carmel won't be going coed anytime soon in a letter to parents, the Catholic high school said they intend to stay boys only to the school year through this school year and next that according to block club Chicago in June school leadership floated the idea of adding girls to combat struggling enrollment. "O'Hare 44 at midway It is 38 up in Waukegan 35 down in Joliet 36 in Lansing 33 on the lakefront I'm James Sears on Chicago's very own 7 20 WGN Mad Max: Fury Road you may recall the 2015 movie is the most insane looking fun to watch movie even if like me you don't exactly understand what's going on here There's a car that looks like a porcupine Fighting a tanker train truck with flags and spears and guns There's a crane doing about 70 miles an hour And a roadster with a tall fenced grill attached to its front is Tom Hardy's character with his face in a metal cage There's a rolling sound stage with four drummers on the back and a guitar player strapped to the front whose guitar is a flamethrower as they roll through the desert into battle Who doesn't want to watch that I've watched that movie more than once and thought how is it that this got made and how is it that people didn't die making it And the lo and behold I see this book blood sweat and chrome And it's written by our guest Kyle Buchanan Kyle you're on WGN radio thanks for joining us Thanks for having me John and really what movie wouldn't be better by a porcupine shaped car I think maybe the most insane fun thing is the flamethrower guitar guy That was absolutely the moment where when I saw this film for the first time my jaw literally dropped you know That is a film that is unafraid to just push it to push things in a direction that other people might think it's wacky but because you're willing to go out on that knife stage the whole movie hits a little harder I mean it's got the craziest action scenes I've seen probably in just about any movie And it's astonishing to learn how they were made but also you know how this movie was made so much went into it took 20 years to get made and even when it finally finally got off the ground the leads were fighting the studio was trying to shut it down Just about everything that could go wrong went wrong and still somehow they made a masterpiece And made a masterpiece by a guy named George Miller who if you just looked at his IMDb you wouldn't go well he'll make this movie because he made movies like the witches of eastwick and Lorenzo's oil and what's the other puffy movie that he made Good one but I mean you wouldn't see it coming would you I mean before he made theory road the two films he directed were the happy feet movies You know animated penguin films I think people are always astonished to hear that the Mad Max guy made the happy feet movies but if you meet him he's much more the guy you'd expect who made the happy feet movies He's very kindly guy He has this sort of grandfather of paper professor manor He barely speaks above a mild Australian look And maybe because of that you know people see him on a set like this but so crazy and they think to themselves just I really have what it takes to get this movie over the line and to have people connect with it You know he hadn't even made a live action film in a long time when he signed on to make this movie And while he was making this movie he was making another movie too wasn't he Yeah I mean he was making a happy P two at the same time It's kind of a wild thing where I think because he seems so sort of you know it's not just fire breathing director like James Cameron who made Titanic or Michael Bay You know he seems like the kind of guy you can push around and many people have tried to and what they find is this man has a spine of steel He does not back down He does not quit I mean you have to That's the only way that you can have this movie where for 20 years people were saying no you can't make it No you can't do it No we'll shut it down And still he had the confidence to see it through Okay I'm going to not let you go longer than 25 seconds on the answer to this question And you can probably do this Not to answers have been long but here's the point What's the movie about It's deceptively simple It's a chase sequence Max and furiosa Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron are escaping through the desert They're being pursued by a warlord who wants the hostages that they've smuggled out But there's so much under the surface the more you unpack this film the more the themes jump out at you That's the thing that's prognosis post apocalyptic world gas and water or valued and the movie if you just ask me it's this really fun chase scene but as I've read the book and heard other interviews you've given there's a lot more going on there than maybe I appreciate it I don't have to appreciate all the subtext though do I No I always kind of liken it to a song you know The first time you hear a song you're just letting it wash over you The next few times maybe you're paying more attention to the lyrics And then if you really love it you want to know who made it how they made it and the love that went into making it But this movie didn't have a script as I understand it well as you tell Miller had created 3500 Is that the right number storyboards And they were seen by scene and goes we'll do this Then we'll do this And I don't know how the actors felt about that but it was like some of the scenes that he would shoot He needs to capture a storyboard are three seconds long And he says good got it And they go got what And he goes next storyboard We'll film that Something like that right I just didn't feel great about it You know they're usually used to getting Athena up on its feet and doing you know two or three minutes and it's shot from a bunch of angles George Miller knew down to the millisecond what's not he.

"Is 35 aurora 33 34 on the lakefront I'm James Sears on Chicago's very own 7 20 WGN WGN radio haven't talked to our friend Carrie peck in a while but we do now the elder law attorney You've got a question about your estate your will maybe your parents estate or will or how somebody's massen with them Carrie peck is the guy to talk to Carrie welcome back How have you been Excellent John How are you today Thanks for having me I'm glad to hear you say excellent Are you an excellent spirits in health I am an excellent spirits and health and I hope you and your family are as well Well I know you were really cautious about the pandemic and very very careful in your personal and business practices And so I think I don't want to get ahead of ourselves here but I think a lot of people are going to breathe a little bit of a sigh of relief without a mask on come the first to march Well I'm sure you're right John There's no question but you're right I was very careful And I thank God it paid off Well particularly since I suppose you see adults or elder adults so in your practice you would have to be particularly careful to say nothing about your own care I think that's been a point of concern for a lot of people Kerry has been over the course of the pandemic and we're talking a couple of years now a lot of us who have parents who are senior citizens wish that their caretakers would take better care of their health you know what I mean And I don't know what Options you have if the day care center or the people that come into mom and dad's house aren't exercising the kind of caution you wish they would Do you have any advice or thoughts along those lines Well I think that you know it's kind of it starts with don't kill grandma And you know we take it from there And I think that when people come into your home particularly if they're paid caregivers you can set the rules as to what protocol you want them to follow regarding wearing a mask and COVID precautions And you know as you know and pointed out already that the elderly population is very susceptible to COVID and ultimately they potential death So this is a real serious issue And I think at most caregivers will be responsive to a family saying you know wear a mask or follow the following COVID protocols to keep Bond safe I can see that sign now Don't kill grandma take to the front door I should have put that on the front door My mom and dad's house who have both survived COVID late during the pandemic but we didn't have that sign Don't kill grandma don't kill grandpa which I think would at least be a reminder to people of how stark the decision is when you're taking care of people if you decide not to get the vaccine what the consequences could be And I don't know that everybody will abide by that or has been abiding by that carry I think a lot of people said yeah I'm not going to do it And either I'll lie to you or I'll quit my job But I don't know that all of the caretakers out there had been that conscientious Well I think you're right And I think it's kind of a case by case situation And I think that you know when somebody hires a caretaker they should ask the agency or the individuals they're hiring them directly What can we expect and what preventive precautions will you take to keep your patient your client safe Because you know I really think that you know kind of the bumper sticker the sign on the door don't kill grandma says it all Carey pecks on a phone line Peck Ritchie dot com is the website He's the elder law attorney whose commercials you hear her once in a while and who we turn to for expertise on things like will's state plans trust a candy has a question for you Candy you're on WGN What's your question for Carrie Hi we're getting ready to meet with a lawyer next week And we're trying to figure out if we need a will or a trust Okay It's a great question candy And I think that a lot of John's listeners have the same question If you use a revocable living trust you will have a will also And the purpose of using what we call a revocable living trust is to avoid probate In Illinois if you die with assets in your name alone not a joint tenancy that was the beneficiary designation but assets in excess of a $100,000 in your name alone it's necessary to open a post death probate estate And that's done at the daily center if you die in Cook County in the 18th floor and that's where we administer decedents estates and basically administration of the decedents to state is gathering the assets paying the debts and distributing the assets either under the terms of a will and or trust or if someone dies without a will the state of Illinois has already created a will for you So a revocable living trust is a state of the art device to avoid the post death probate proceeding and it's a real good one and I would encourage you to have that discussion with your attorney and he's likely to or she to recommend the preparation of what we call a pour over will in conjunction with a revocable living trust Okay now you're getting to a question I've got which is because you said if you have a revocable living trust you have a will Those aren't synonymous with each other are they No but in this instance they are paired couple And the reason they're a paired couple is because when you use a revocable living trust the intention is that you're going to change the title of your assets and put them into the trust So for example John if you have a stock portfolio and you want to put it into your revocable living trust to avoid probate and you do you're going to change the.
