"Part of the thing that the flyers missed with Carter Hart. It was all on him right away. And he succeeded for a while, but there was nobody there to sort of help him manage the ups and downs besides, like no peer that was sort of had been there a long time established on Roman guy to start helping him manage the inevitable ups and downs that are going to come. They'll come for skin or two. They're just part of the game. They were there to help you manage that is important. They will. I guess, and I think we actually, when you and I did a show right as free agency started in some of these. And we broke down Campbell to the oilers and all that in memory to the leaves and stuff like that. I think we actually made the point at the time. I would have personally preferred to see them go for like just try to acquire James reimer for nothing. And have him assume that role, and you look now, I mentioned there's no one gives up more rush shots in the sharks. He's above league average in save percentage. Before even adjust for that environment, making way less. And on shorter term, I guess. Somebody's going to come into the studio here if they can get in the front door and take away my goal and union card as soon as this comes out of my mouth. But that's why if I was in charge, if I was a general manager or in charge of goaltending decisions, the one thing I would avoid and I know I'm going to take it from the goalie union for saying this, but I would avoid term. I would just avoid term because it's a volatile position. And Matt Murray is a perfect example. Like, literally, the game changed, in part because of the way the penguins and Matt Murray succeeded in one Stanley Cup's playing it. To the extent where met married didn't forget how to play goal, the way he played gold doesn't work anymore. And so the last couple of years have been spent trying to adjust the technical foundation, the way he moves the way he holds his stance, the way he stands on the ice so that he can keep up with the east west that the penguins started the trend towards creating and also happened at the time to be the best of preventing.

And like so many of his legendary Bay Area rap predecessors, la Russell is innovating the game as well. The idea here was to build a venue that we own. Give him a team leading 27 points and that's the most of any defenseman in the NHL two. There's a shot and he's gone Joe marsh hurdle and the sharks have tied it here in the third. Now it was also a struggle for goaltender James reimer. He has started 13 games this season and played a critical role during their last three wins on the road, but he has yet to be the goalie during a home win, and he opened up his press conference after the game without the media having to ask a question. We couldn't get it done. I mean, obviously, I mean, I don't have to, you know, wait for a question. But obviously, I mean, you know, how close and good enough tonight. As for sharks defenseman Eric Carlson, he continues to dominate on the ice, he would score a goal in total three assists in this game, one of which was to Kevin le bank, who spoke about why Carlson has been so dangerous on the ice. "Be in it, how much stock we should put into it, how concerned we should potentially be about it. Ryan, let's stick with the theme of talking about young players and let's talk a little bit about the Conrad sweepstakes here. I know a very exciting topic for fans of teams one or two weeks into the seasons already be thinking ahead like this. But I have to say, you know, I don't know how heading into the season, I feel like coyotes, Blackhawks, potentially Canadians, flyers, those last two have actually looked quite encouraging to start the year. I think we very, very firmly and definitively need to put the San Jose sharks not only amongst that group, but arguably at the top of it based on how they look to start the season. Yeah. And that's a bit of a surprise, I think a lot of us would have said Arizona and Chicago and a runaway and as much as people want to bag on the flyers. For what they did this summer, I think it's totally reasonable to expect them to finish like 21st or whatever. That seems like the John tortorella system. There's a level of confidence. Yeah, that's right. And so yes, boy, these sharks think, man. I don't know what to say. I don't know what else to say. They are unbelievably bad. And I think the reason they kind of snuck up on everybody here is you look at their roster and it's like, oh, those are like some pretty good players, right? Maybe Logan couture is a little bit past it, but they got like emo Mayer. Yeah, Tomas hurdle, right? Just like maybe not young is the right word anymore, but like guys, you should be excited about, you know? And I think the other thing is you would have said, oh, I bet their goaltending can be somewhat confident. Cabo cacan and James reimer, those are both goalies that even if you're not like, oh, those guys are really solid. I think you would say, they can be like average in behind a team that maybe isn't great defensively or whatever. How about this? James reimer 9 19 in his three games. He faced a 111 shots he's allowed 9 goals and he's Owen three. Yeah. It doesn't even matter if the goaltending is good, because that's how bad the team is. You mentioned some of those four is. I don't know if you've already been looking at their depth chart. Can you name the 12 words they're currently using? I know when I looked at it yesterday, I was like, oh, I feel like any time a team is led at any point in the season in scoring by evgeny fetching a car that's bad. I know, let's see here. Who else do I know that they have? They got Stephen Lawrence. That's a guy I looked at over the summer or like just a week or two ago because I thought he might have a brother who was playing college hockey. They were unrelated to

"Like that demko deal 5 years at 5 looks like if he can stay healthy, that's going to be a hell of a deal. It's just Eric and three at 5.6. Those are going to be the next ones. Is a team, those are the few guys that can be that big a difference maker. Do you pay them on a vasilevsky type scale? I think the answer is going to be no. But they're the next test cases to me. All right, we have gotten into the free agents, man. I don't think we're going to get to them. I think we're all we're an hour in and we haven't talked Matt Murray, man, like my phone's been ringing off the hook about Matt Murray for the last couple of weeks. Over the last couple of days, I should say. I don't think there's been a shortage of mammary coverage or the basket couple of days. I don't think most of it has been very educated. I'll be honest with you. Yes. You could apply that to a lot of hockey topics, but I don't know. Do you want to talk, I'll give you 5 minutes here. Memory, Jack Campbell. What's the most interesting component of all that to you? I do find an interesting again, we talk about the stats. I like Jack Campbell. There are elements of his game that improved in Toronto that I really liked. We all know about the story, the backstory. It's a good story. He's a great person, teammates play hard for him. At the end of the day, his numbers over the past two seasons grayed out in my numbers from clear site when we look at say adjusted save percentage. In the 30s. High 30s, but in the 30s. And as murky as that metal is and like you said, all goalies sort of make that range. 5 times 5 for a guy in the 30s makes me nervous. There are other things he deserves credit for. Toronto's obviously a very tough market. I thought he handled it very well. Toronto, and this is another one that doesn't come out in the stats. They're not always an easy team to play behind because they will generate a ton if they don't finish. They give up some good looks, the other way. But on the whole, they should be a good goalie environment defensively. But sometimes it's tough when you don't see a shop for 5 minutes to then face a two on one. And there's a little bit of that there. And he handled that well. But at the end of the day, the numbers don't lie. He grades out in the 30s. Are you going 5 times 5 for a guy in the 30s? That's the question I have. Well, I'm fascinated to see how it works out. Yeah. I mean, I'm on the record, I would have just done a James reimer Stewart skinner tandem for like 3.5 million next season and if that doesn't work out, then you readjust next off season. But I get it. I would have been a lot more worried about this if this was still a Dave tippett team because for all the reputations of him being a defensive coach, the numbers never.

"The Chicago CPA, coming to the rescue of the Blackhawks. Slow to get up after that surprise contact. Here's why they put it in front. For 14 minutes, he was in goal. 14 full minutes of ice time, which probably felt like an eternity. Yeah. And he made 7 saves, he surrendered no goals. In the Blackhawks one, 6 to two. How shocked were you that you actually had to play? Well, the initial shock happened when I had to dress. And then I think you just kind of black out after that. Have you been the guy kind of on standby this year just in case this happens? There's a collection of guys. I think I've done maybe 1215 games I've come here. Usually I just head upstairs, watch a game from press box, have a bite to eat and head home. So what's your day job? I'm an accountant by day, so a few hours ago I was sitting on my computer typing on a ten key and now I'm standing in front of you guys just finished 14 and a half minutes of NHL hockey. Before you went out? I don't think I heard anything other than put your helmet on. Now I'm standing here. And so this is the guy who records the very first save as an E bug for the historical record here, but a couple years later, Jeremy, somehow, it's 2020 and an even more absurd historic story unfolds. This time with a dude and he is, again, a dude just a dude named David ayers. So tell us about David. Well, David ayers is 38. And he had played a long time ago in the low minor leagues, but his full-time job, and it was maybe misreported at the time that he was really a zamboni driver who could resist. He actually ran a ring in Toronto, which used to be maple leaf gardens and worked for the Toronto marlies, one of the teams there. So he's a guy whose life is in hockey. He's basically as close to the NHL as if you were the chief groundskeeper in triple-A. This is a guy also who 14 years earlier was in kidney failure. And needed a new kidney. And his mother chose to give him one of her kidneys. Originally, when I was on dialysis, you would have your tubes kind of hanging out of your neck on your chest. And I would still play hockey. I wasn't really supposed to. For me, that was a dream, to be able to get on the ice and being able to play again. So, you know, as he's getting older, he's still around the game, but the dream of getting back on the ice was something that stayed with him. And then it's February 22nd, 2020. Carolina is in Toronto and the hurricane starter James reimer gets injured in the first period. And then in the second period, the backup, Peter Murray. He goes down. So David ayers, you know, this guy who is dreamed of playing in the NHL his whole life, Maple Leafs fan. He's now in this situation, which is arisen only a couple of times ever in the NHL, a playing against the Maple Leafs for real. They're coming into me saying like, Dave, you know, get the rest of your gear on. Our goalie just got hit. And you're next in line. Everything has happened kind of so fast, you didn't have time to think about it. You just kind of put your gear on and go. It not only does airs actually play, you know, now he's in the NHL, but he makes 8 saves. Tip dares made the save. There's down makes his head has no idea where the puck is. Here's mix a lovely siege. Clifford dumps the puck in and I catch it and I was thinking to myself, this is my park and I'm not giving it to anybody. That was my thought. I'm like, I'm never letting go of this puck. This airs makes a bunch of saves and he is the goalie of record. He gets the win. He is the first E bug to win a game. In the NHL. What is the scene like in the locker room, Jeremy? As the first Victoria's E bug has just been crowned. You know, airs comes in. Everybody's waiting for them. They're popping champagne like they've just.

"Bet online, where the game starts. You know, it's funny, Connor. I was at the garden on Friday night for the Celtics game. I made that great luck. And I made some bets with bet online. And I typically do this when I go to a game that I'm not covering. It's like, it's fun. You know, you do it and makes you more into the game and I'm not gonna sit here and say I did great. I'm doing. Maybe. But you've been online. I use bet online. I actually used it on my phone. Convenient. Very convenient very easy to use. It was very simple. My Friends were very impressed. They were like, damn, that was very well. They're all just to win. Oh shit. Yeah, this guy's an expert, okay? Basketball expert. But yeah, very easy to use. And overall, again, just fun times. Fun times for all the very fun on Friday night by the way, too. I haven't been to the garden as like in the regular seats. You know, with you, will you comment folk? For many for many years now. So it was fun. The cafeteria kind of spot. That's pretty cool. It is cool. And we showed up kind of late, so I got my typical chicken fingers and fries. Because you can't go wrong. Garden chicken fingers and fries hit so different. Yes. So good. Expensive down east was 15 bucks. 15 bucks for a down east. It's quite hefty. Very hefty. Speaking of hefty, the bruins offensive game on Sunday, three goals, right? Pretty much right off the bat. But then later in the game, they give up some goals. They almost lost it. There was a real chance there at the end. It was James reimer's revenge that they were going to lose that game in the third period after being up four to one. Now, I ask you, what is more encouraging or concerning are you more encouraged by the offensive fast start and their ability to well not ability to hold the.

"They're going to have to do something at the position and you know you and I've talked about it. Did they just bridge to Yuka Peca Lucan in Are they that confident that he's going to be the guy that they don't make any sort of long term commitments or Do they want to be good right away. You know one of the one of the things that have to do with Don Granado. Okay, let's say they hire Granado. It's a young team They're going to want to learn to win. He's going to teach them the way he the way he does, You know, national development team, whatever. We're going to grow as a team. We're not expecting to win the Stanley Cup. Okay, What kind of goal does that team get? The best possible goalie, the young goalie, the veteran guy that they can count on. Do they want to get Marc Andre Fleury right. His name was thrown around like last year. So Vegas is committed to Lennar. Long term. Why would they want to not going to give a flurry? Another contract? So you kind of get to that? I don't know what they're going to do in goal, but they don't have any. They don't have an NHL goaltender under contract so they'll probably bring in two And Hallmark again. He was generally fine. So do you want to pay? Generally find pretty good. Yeah, six million a year because that's what he might want right around right around. Now. Do you try to take a flyer on somebody else's young guy that had a hot year like Carter. Hutton wasn't young when they took the flyer on him fill through power. You want to go give him a big group of U F A in Colorado has cat problems? Go ahead and give him big money, then, right Pheasant, a finalist. You want to go out and give that guy a big contract? I just don't think that's the right approach. Right, so it'll be interesting to see what they do. You know, I I Ideally, you want the goalie that makes you feel great back there every single night, But in a salary cap world you have to. You have to have conversations about every position so It is a more interesting It's a very interesting spot. In terms of what they do, and it feels like the large amount of hockey fans and how the hockey world has kind of accepted the you don't just go out and pay the top goalie on the market, big money the way you would if he's a quarterback, right? We don't do that. But It's almost like a wait and see. Do you have You say no to group our you saying no to Gibson. Who do you say? Yes. To Yeah, well, I'm asking myself that too. Like I don't even know who the who The answer is. There are a truckload of free agent goalies on the market this year. To now, again varying degrees of contract. If you're Philip Group hours, 29, I'm going to guess you're looking for a pretty good sized deal off the season. He just add. Took her ass. Pecker, Rene Frederik Andersen, Devon Dubnyk. Uh, ego. Ego. She's Sturcken. He's restricted. Sorry. Those guys are all U F phase. James Reimer, Peter Marra. Zack, You want him? What about the Florida goalie? The guy that's behind Um, What was it brightens Chris Trigger, Chris trigger. Thank you. Right. He's behind both. Bobrovsky and their first trump expense er night. Yeah, so he's changing to what happens with him, like Is that a guy? I mean, maybe an R F A, Um or are you if I'll double check? Is that an answer for you? Because, you know he's had some success right? And like. It's a he's six ft Four like you might like a tall goalie, But you wouldn't be paying this guy $7 million a year anyway. Well, if you're the Sabres, you might decide again. Like what is Kevyn Adams? How does Kevin Adams view this team? Does he think Our scouts are Pro scouts say this guy is a number one. Yeah, we're going to sign him for five years. 30,000,005 years $35 million. We think he's the number one just Do it. See? But okay, all right, I'll not that I would do this, but I guess if you want to play along on how this all fits, it's entirely possible. Over the next few weeks, Three guys will come off the roster that eat up about $20 Million of Cap space. Michael Reinhardt risk the line in So you would certainly be opening up a lot of cap space. If you wanted to pay a goalie. Big money it gets to for me. I guess it gets to Toby readers going to eat up a lot of that, though. No, no, But Darlene Yoki har you future contract. Borgen. Those are three R F A s middle stats. An R F a splint and R F A Right? But it gets to, I guess you know, I know the position. Yes, the positions important, Ultimately, that's the guy who has to stop the puck and I think, but I still think it comes down to what kind of a team do you have? Like when we're watching? I mean, Carter Hutton turns out to be not so good. But we were watching the Sabres and we're seeing them lose hockey games We're talking about boy. If the goal is could just come up with a clutch, save every now and then to bail out the team when they're making mistakes in front of them. Don't know that Kevin Adams vision should be. We're going to be young from the next 23 years we're going to develop. We're going to have some talent here. We're going to maybe go through some growing pains. We're going to be prone to mistakes. I need a wall back there. I need like a big giant freaking wall to cover up for what this team is going to be going through as it goes through its growing pains. I'm just not a fan of you know you can find a goalie, but whether or not you want to pay him a big, big contract, high cap number long term. I'm just not a fan of that. I just think nobody was talking about Montreal as a model. Now, all of a sudden, they win three playoff series and and Marc Bergeron is the version is all of a sudden the GM of the year when he's been on the hot seat for how many years now in Montreal. It was not a good contract to give out. Nobody in the league thought it was a good contract to give out to carry price. But all of a sudden they make a little run, and now we're looking at them and saying Yep. Do what The Canadians did go sink tons of money into the best goal you can find and bring them in here right now. It's just not the way I would. I know I got to have a good goalie. That doesn't mean you've got to find the most expensive, biggest contract, you know, sink it into a good free agent goalie and pay that guy $678 million a year. No, I just don't think that's the way to go. That's not to me. That's not the correct way to allocate your resources. The thing that Montreal is getting right now. Is first off. They don't have a really high paid forward on the roster, the highest paid salaries Brendan Gallagher 6.5. Josh Anderson Tyler Toffoli. How bout to Foley, who signed for them as a great signing for them? 4.2 you know, that was one of those silly season free agencies where they got what they really came for. Then you've got young and cheap. So if you wanna talk about The Sabres being better. This is this. This is how you again It's not like how you build a roster. Not trying to say Montreal is perfect, but Whole Caulfield 20 years old entry level contract. He's good. Nick Suzuki 21 Entry Level contract. He's good economy. Cut, Kenny Emmy. Sorry of struggling on that again, Um They've They've got young guys that jumped in and have really given them results. And with that, it's one thing that The Sabres have not had that mix right whether it's rushing middle stat or not playing roots align in soon enough, right? It seems like The organization can always claim that the timelines there on are the best. If a guy comes up and does really well in rot does really well after being in Rochester. Well,.

"At the left point. Still looking at 1st 1st NHL goal, Stillman put the fuck down the boards the camp about 10 ft. Inside the line near the point. Oblique scripts and Frieda Connolly in the slot. He tried to unload a shot. It was black to the left wing corner. Connelly got it back to arugula and he'll fire from the slot and that may have hit the mask of morass IQ. Arugula again along the right boards runs into a check from Hamilton. But put the puck down the boards in behind the hurricane. That awake goes to the left wing corner to Connelly. Camp Taku, Billy confronted shoots on Miranda. Brilliant saving the butterfly in a follow up shot by Kubelik and again morass IQ makes the save this time with the glove. Great sequence of saves there for Peter Morass IQ, denying his countrymen Dominic Jubilee. Why Cooper gets him. Real good looks. The best one was the beginning of this whole sequence, and he fanned on that opportunity, but I think he probably had three shots. Maybe for this little sequence and all good opportunities more as it has had a tremendous season for the Hurricanes when he has been healthy. Got three shadows on the season and only 10 games. I think it is, and that's more than 11 teams combined. All season long. Murphy fired a shot from the right point. It was blocked in front of the net look like a different Tessie Puckett's fun down. I said to the Hawks known We're gonna get icing here to Carolina. Think that Rod Brind'Amour is probably trying to get his top goaltender some game. Experience here in the last couple games before heading into the postseason, get him into some type of a rhythm before the playoffs. I gotta think he's gonna be the guy. You've got Alex the delicate You have been pretty good this year, and James Reimer, the quintessential backup. He's been pretty solid, but I agree with you. If you're as it gets onto his game, the Kanes could go far. Sanest Rosa breaking into the hurricane zone on the left wing. Turning back toward the high slot. He lets a shot go that is blocked wide. Was parked in the near boards geeky, trying to clear it out in a stroller picks it off wheels.

Yeah, Dylan's Trump's fourth of the year from the brink it and Kubelik. So both of those guys who provided the helpers on that one getting their second points of the night and then I even things up at three. Carolina kept pushing through the end of regulation to the point where Kevin like they had to come up big with some saves of the game. Murphy at the hotline. Monitor head now for shots center ice had it knocked away suspension, a copy on the right wing of the hot nanny poles and shoots in the next state by Lincoln and down in the butterfly position. Here the other way. A Soderbergh a center ice gave it away to Passy. Hurricane line the whole hawk right? Put it into the zone. This match the cop down the slot, he shoots and it's wide of the net. Whole gotta back. The pesky right circle he fires down is linking him with a butterfly. Save kicking it away. Now passing another drive from the right point, Lincoln and down with another butterfly save and he'll hold a pocket. A whistle will stop playing Boy Lincoln and coming up Big Yeah, The rookie did come up big there to keep it a 33 game and force overtime that despite the fact that Carolina out shot the Blackhawks in the final 20 minutes, 17 to 6 under overtime. We went Each team certainly had its share of opportunities as Carolina put five shots on that compared to three for the Blackhawks, But they went to a shoot out in the first five skaters. Shooters were all denied to break it for the Hawks Hamilton for the Canes. And Patrick Kane and Vinny Trocheck were denied by the respective opposing goaltenders. Dylan Strome in the third round for the Blackhawks. Almost had one going but couldn't sneak one past James Reimer. And then it was upto Andre Special, Nick off taking the pocket center ice man. It's gonna be Andres fetching a cough. He's over one this season. So let's see what happens. Takes the puck at center ice in over the hotline, turning down the slide Dicks and shoots his scars and the Hurricanes win the shoot out one to nothing. They end up winning the hockey game. 4 to 3? Yeah, Way to go Troy over one, always one for two on the Blackhawks fall 43 in a shoot out there that ended things up as the Blackhawks were out shot in this game, 41 to 33 overall and after winning 56% of the face off in the first period that fell over all in the game to just 44% as Blackhawks. Victoria's just on 30 of 68 draws on the night as it was particularly tilted in the third period, when Carolina won 17 of 21 face offs to help them to that 17 6 shots. Advantage. "James Reimer. And he's ready to break. It picks up the puck. It's center ice carries it over the hurricane line, twisting down the slot to break it. Deeks and shoots and Reimer got the right pat on it, kicking it away. So no score in the shootout. Hammered by the way 21 21 in his career in shoot outs. Hamilton this year. One for one. He's got the puck racing over the hot line down the slide Biggs and shoots, said Lincoln and stopped it with the stick, so no score in the shoot out. And now Patrick Kane will take the next shot for the heart last time that he took that Shootout attempt just didn't look like he was very confident in what he wanted to do You see what he does here? He picks up the puck. It's center ice races over the hurricane line down the slot slows down. Dixon Dixon Dixon Dixon shoots that glove save made by Rhymer. That's a save. He did what he wanted to do there went to the back end and try to elevate it. Reimer stuck right with him and Snap that one out of the air. Here's Vincent Pro check. He's one for one on the season. Yep, he picks up the puck. It's center ice carries it over the hot line on the left wing side angles back to the SWAT shoots and Lincoln and down with a butterfly. Say so, no score in the shoot out after two shooters from each side. It's going to be Dylan Strome. You can put the Hawks ahead if he can tally one here. Drome in his career and shootouts over one. He takes the puck over the hurricane line down the slot geeks and shoots on Reimers somehow made the save on his belly. Got some part of his equipment on that to stop it. Now the Hurricanes can win it here if they can score And it's going to be Andres. Fetch Nick off. He's over one this season, So let's see what happens. Takes the puck. It's center ice in over the hotline, turning down the slide dicks and shoots his scars and the Hurricanes win the shoot out one to nothing. They end up winning the hockey game. 4 to 3. Why It was a good effort by the Blackhawks here against a very good team. They extracted one point out of this game from the Hurricanes. These two teams will meet again on Thursday night. And you just know that this was a confidence builder for the Hawks to play this Carolina team this tough. I think they're gonna be coming to the ice Thursday night with a lot of confidence.
