My kitchen project is coming along well slowly. See, everything is super expensive, but the most expensive part I have found are the cabinets and the options are so vast. Do I want soft closed doors and drawers? Do I want them made of particle board? Or do I want them made of real plywood? Real lumber, or what color do I want? What finish do I want them? I came up with a solution. Cabinets are ridiculously expensive. So what I'm going to do is I am going to a cabinet maker and I'm buying raw cabinets, meaning they don't have any finish on them. They're all pure plywood. They're all dovetailed together, but I'm going to save a ton of money by staining them and finishing them myself. So if you want to redo a kitchen, you want to save some money, buy some raw cabinets. I'm Richard McCann, and I am your home improvement guru. "james madison university" Discussed on Assistive Technology Update

"Is where we connect individual users and their support system with other resources such as tech mentor training if they need some clinical services if they'd like to attend some virtual workshops and that's where a partnership that we have with james madison university comes in that any my guide care user has access to a number of virtual workshops where they can attend to do bowling football. Yoga kickboxing physical activities that are done in the virtual environment and it includes a trained tech mentor to work. One on one with the individual told me a story about someone that's been assisted by by some of these solutions. I certainly will. Okay so one is cindy and cindy is a forty year old with intellectual and developmental disabilities and she was living in a group home and when we met her at her day program and she was very quiet and she was very prompt dependent. She was very agreeable to everything. How are you today. nodding her head. Hi what would you like to do. would you like to color. Yes would you like to go to the bathroom. Yes and then you get the picture when we brought in my guide we asked everybody pudding cindy what would you like to do independently. And she immediately says and she's she's not very verbal. It's very difficult to understand her. But we were able to understand was that she wanted to fold close to unfold laundry and her group home said she absolutely cannot do that. Listen we've had her in our group home for ten years which you can't do that ninety impossible we said okay all right so we built a laundry lesson and we let her build a laundry lesson. The first step is you. Take it out of the hamper. The second step is as you lay down flat in the third step. Is that you fold in the arm and then you felt in the other arm and then you fold it up and then you put it in the pile and she. She liked building the guide and picking out the pictures and then we put in front of her and she was like. Where's the shirt worse. I want to do it want to do it. And we sat there and watched her follow this guide. She had a tech mentor. The first time and the tech mentor showed her tap this button. Swipe this is the difference between tapping swiping and after each picture was her favorite cartoon character given her thumbs up and she lit up like fireworks. Cindy has changed so many lives. Okay just by doing that. Laundry lesson that. Everybody said she couldn't do now. She folds laundry. She doesn't even need the guide. She does all kinds of things and doesn't even need the guide she's smiling. She's told us that she wanted to get her haircut. She told us that the reason. She's so grumpy every day because she's really starving hungry because she doesn't get a good enough breakfast at the group home. All of this happened before the pandemic then during the pandemic she was able to with her. My guide virtually connect with her staff that she missed so much and what they were able to do. Is you know. They took pictures of the center and now they're starting to be able to go out in the environment and she is a different person because she has a voice and she has choices and what she wants to do really matters okay. I'll give you another one when i give stories. What i'm most worried about is that everybody is going to peg. My guide is just that population. And so i am really worried about that but my guide really is transformative for human relationships. So i'll give you another underdog story as the story of john q. Is in his thirties. And he had a number of conditions. He was not able to do his toilet in routine independently. He was completely dependent. And so here. He is a thirty something year. Old man who literally had to wear diapers and had to wait until staff had time to change him and we started working with him for something entirely different. We started working with him because he was obsessed with coffee so obsessed with coffee he would leave the group home he would go across. The street could walk into somebody else's house and he'd himself as a cup of coffee because he knew they had it. He also had tremors he had epilepsy. I believe and so when we started working with him it was about coffee safety because once he stole coffee from somewhere he would just start gulping it and it would burn him obviously so we started with his clinician started to make a guide that allowed him to tap one button if he wanted coffee and another button. If you wanted water and you could see in his face that he was causing something to happen in his life. He was so used to for for thirty some years of making a commotion so that he could get what he needed because he had no way of communicating. What he needed he was also deaf so he started tapping of course rapid fire the coffee button but then she got tricky. Because sometimes clinicians do that in order to improve progress and she started to make the button smaller and closer together and we watched this man physically control his tremors so that he could press the coffee button and then guess what happened because that was so successful one of his day program staff. Do you know what. I wonder what he'd do. If we made a died for the toilet eating routine. John independently toilets now. Uses the guide to say. I'm going to the bathroom. He uses the guide to say. Hey i need help. Can you come in here. Otherwise could you stay out of my private space please..

"False or wrong ideas from the world and they circulate for different reasons and today as we think about. Crt this is something as stan mentioned last week. The elders the congregation to be aware of get some insight about this is one of the philosophies that we find this product in our world but it is by no means the only one james madison university. Anybody ever hear them all right. You have over there in virginia this past week about forty hours ago. They came up with some interesting claims. New idea make not completely new but they have put together a video designed to help some of their students and in that video from james madison. They talk about oppressors. Now that's somewhat related to what we're talking about. And they played in that video. If you're a male you are either oppressor or it's very likely you are an oppressor and they don't specify whether you are this color or that color whether you are a young male or an old male but if you are a male you are likely in the oppressor category but it doesn't stop there if you are someone who is straight. That is someone who is not involved with homosexuality. There's a really good chance that you are an oppressor may think about that. The indictment against the people who would say well. We're not involved with homosexuality. We're not interested in that but they would say well we would look at you as if not in the presser potentially in oppressor gender. That's the word this being tossed around a lot. Anybody know what gender person is while you're probably you probably are one even though you don't know it assist person says well i i was born a male and i believe i'm a male or i believe i was born a female and i lay claim to being a female. If you were in your estimation Born a female and you sama female if you were in your estimate born a male and you send mail your sis gender person well in the past. We've had people who would say well. That's just you know the science so to speak but now if you lay claim to your gender Then you are at least by the training video that has been released. You are in oppressor if you are athletically-built now again you think about that. You discount all the other stuff that if you have an athletic build then of course you fall into the potentially or you are an oppressor but here's where it gets really interesting. If you are a christian you are an oppressor or you are at least in the very likely oppressor category and this is independent of races is independent of age. This is independent of a lot of other things. But if you profess to be a christian you are oppressor and this kind of thinking becomes very very dangerous very quickly. Carol correct pretty much bad about some. We have mechanized chapter five. Is you talked about turning good into evil evil. Good people flipping things on their heads so to speak so again. This kind of stuff is not new cross philosophies they've been around for a long time and this is the current culture that we live in so you as looking as far as looking at the sheet point number four hundred america gets to the point. And what you'd christians do well part of the problem is that people have taken wrongs from the past and they have started to do some very very interesting things with them. Looking the point number six have been treated unfairly. They've been treated badly wrongly for a lot of reasons. Sometimes those reasons are related to a person's economic status sometimes related to gender. Sometimes you're related to skin color as you look at what we have under six eight sundown towns or gray towns. Anybody know what a great town is. I don't say anything just raised your okay. Raise your hand anybody else. All right to. Stan probably knows because we discussed it. Maybe maybe not Anybody else a sundown town. If you don't know what a great town is all right. Bonnie raise your hand. I will let you be the star pupil. What is a great town or a son downtown off extra. That is a very succinct. That is a very good definition of that. And we've had as you go back practically to the seventeen hundreds and find that there were different rules different laws as far as great pounds. Downtown's anybody know that that's a little closer to home force. Well as far as it goes back to the seventeen hundreds about seventeen seventy seven but is that a little closer to home for us. I think that was a well. I don't know that we have that active in the us stay from. I did not know that. How about that bar how. 'bout goshen indiana sundown town. Don black really school. He's all over river. how about that. Well that does tie in with one of the things that have a little further down about you. Need some people who either lived through some of that because of where they were or some people who had some grandparents or people who have done some reading so thank you for that history. stand out a little more than just. The towns by parents were raised will county in all those countries. You couldn't find colored family with those comedies. They simply were not allowed period. Knows now were allowed. Their work some exclusions. As far as owning property and some other restrictions. We'll get into a couple more items related that and just a little bit. I if you go back and you do little searching on google. I think that you'll find back in two thousand fifteen six years ago Gauche in the city council had a meeting and they apologized for being the son downtown. So this is something that has been in the news fairly fairly recently. Now most of the people as far as adults in this class if you knew what you didn't say it but Based on the number of hands most would appear to have not been aware of that well. I'll tell you this if you have kids go to a lot of secular universities this is going to be something that they are told and it's going to be something that they're not only told. This is something that they're going to be told. Hit a great deal of fan for this is a huge point of emphasis in a lot of academic environments and they're at least in my instrumentation appears to be teachers who they just can't wait to tell kids came from sundown or you live in a state which has had sundown towns or american has had some downtown's for the last two hundred plus years and then they can tie in some other things that young people might be more familiar with We had recently want to remember. It's here older than i am telling me that. He could remember growing up in a more southern area that there were places they were restaurants. Where if you were of a particular skin color You got your hamburger surf your window. Now we think about today being served through a window as far as burger joint because of copeland nineteen can't come in and we can't get the staff but there have been places in this country. Where if you were of a certain skin color you can get your burger inside you can come inside and the point. That don made is exactly right You are welcome here as far as eating in this this particular established. But if you don't have the right skin color you get your ferguson. The window were somebody brings.

Interview With Kaely McDevitt

"Haley thank you so much for coming on the podcast today. I'd love to get started. If you could talk about your journey to become a dietitian and then how your philosophy towards nutrition and working with clients has changed over the years to where it is now for sure and thanks so much for having me then. I've been excited about this for a couple of weeks. So I get my journey started back in undergrad and we just recently found out at least you live in DC now. I don't know if that's where you started but I was around that area at James Madison University and I always was interested. In fact, I was an athlete growing up in high school. I wasn't an athlete in college, but I was always interested in how different foods made me, you know feel a certain way during games and I had what felt like a like a ritual before my games with like a smoothie that I would make but really it was just like Common Sense Sports Nutrition that made it work. So I was undecided in undergrad and I was spending a lot of money. I'm reading nutrition research for myself. And then I realized like well, there is a career option in this direction. I might as well make use of what I've you know spending all of my time doing so I started researching nutrition. I got into the dietetics program there and when it started out, you know, I was very much trying to learn about nutrition for myself because I couldn't quite figure out how to feed myself correctly. I was just into college and I just realized like I didn't know what to do. I might eating dining hall food. I'm not an athlete for the first time in my life. How does that like, how does somebody exercise and they're not an athlete how did they feel themselves? So I'm honestly just looking for information for myself and trying to find the quote unquote perfect diet and I was meticulously following everything. I was being taught in school. I was like looking for a low fat labels. I was eating Special K cereal like it was my job and I was logging so much time on ellipticals and getting into distance running and I really watch dog. A health decline as I was doing all of these things, and I was doing them really well to like I was typing with how I was approaching my nutrition and this carried on into my internship off a whole lot of stress in that year. I'm sure as you remember a lot of late nights little sleep lots of work. I was in a master's program at the same time, too, and my health health was really getting worse, and I couldn't find information that I needed cuz a lot of my symptoms were in the hormone realm, which I'm sure we'll get into and I just felt like really alone and honestly kind of like a fraud because divorce quote unquote a nutrition professional and I was following the rules and I I wasn't feeling good. And so I ended up spending a lot more of my free time diving into the Women's Health specific stuff and realizing maybe I am doing this wrong. Maybe I'm approaching this from a completely incorrect standpoint and instead of trying to find the perfect diet. I really just needed to support my body and listen to the signs and symptoms that were popping up dead. And so as I was getting my Rd credential and transitioning into into the workforce, I had this big change of philosophy and approach and it was really sick around. How do we listen to the signs at their bodies giving us? How do we interpret those things at the body sending? How do we use food and movement and lifestyle to actually support and nourish ourselves instead of like meticulously counting and restricting and using food as a manipulation versus using food is nourishment. So really like my own personal health evolved right along side that approach and ended up where I am today in private practice helping women navigate hormone and digestive issues that are typically at least in some part caused by not really understanding that connection between food wage supporting your body, but it's so true. I mean, I think a big problem and one of the reasons why so many people seek out these diets in addition to weight loss, right which is what we've all been told. Oh you need to birth In order to be healthy, right but it's like we don't know what to do in order to be healthy. And so we seek out this external information and then lose the ability to stay in tune with those internal cues from we're we're kids and we know how to eat intuitively and in line with our bodies and like don't demonize cravings and everything until you get to the like bombardment of everything that you experience. I mean really starting in like Elementary School at this point for us. It might have been like a little bit later cuz we didn't have that much social media, right but it gets to the point where you just don't know how to interpret the signals of your body anymore. So like of course people are looking for this external information. It's not like you've been doing something wrong dear listeners, right? Like it's of course you're going that way and so now it's time to like you said instead of trying to like manipulate your food. It's trying to learn what your body is telling you so you can learn how to nourish it and help it get better by helping it along. And just eliminating everything and meticulously counting calories. Yeah, exactly. I think you hit the nail on the head with it's just a big disconnect. Like we basically are are taught to ignore those signs and symptoms. The body is giving us and the fact that our body does a great job at regulating what it needs and informing us of what it needs and somewhere in that mix which probably Elementary School now between social media and the way things are marketed, we just lose that ability and we're taught that that's actually not what we should be following.

Johnson's Suspension Of Parliament Was 'Unlawful,' U.K. Court Rules

"Support for NPR comes from James Madison University named for the man known as the father of the US constitution presenting the next Madison Vision Series Lecture on November fourth learn more at J. Dot Mu Slash Civic British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has lost big votes again and again in parliament and now he has suffered a huge defeat in court the UK Supreme Court has ruled against the prime minister. Let's remember Johnson suspended parliament for five weeks in what was seen seen as an effort to limit debate on Brexit. Will that is the act that the court has found to be illegal and let's bring. NPR's Frank Langfitt who is in the English seaside aside city of Brighton this morning frank. Hey Good Morning David. What exactly is the court saying here well if you remember. David Johnson argued that he needed this long extension so we could work on his legislative agenda but lady Brenda Hall. She was speaking for the eleven justices this morning and she said the suspension effectively prevented legislators from doing their job. This is the way that she put it. It had the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of parliament want to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification. Okay frank a big setback for the prime minister. I mean after a series as of setbacks in parliament now defeated in the courts date has not WanNa vote yet. So how is he is. He sounding still upbeat. Well it's interesting he is. He's going along with this. I don't think he has any choice. This was such a resounding verdict from the Supreme Court but he also says he's going to continue with this policy which the plan is we've been talking about is for Britain to leave the European Union on October thirty first one way or the other Johnson of course is in New York for the UN General Assembly meeting and a and here's what he had to say from New York. Obviously this is a but we will respect. We respect the judicial process. I have to say I strongly disagree with what the justices found I didn't think it's writes but we will go ahead and correspondent post-partum comeback. I think is a good case for getting with the Queen's speech anyway. We'll do that and David when he says the Queen's speech what he's talking talking about is he his legislative agenda which he is planned he's supposed to give on October fourteenth so he does plan to go through with that but House Speaker John Berko he he says that parliament will tomorrow and we'll see how they spend that time certainly we're gonNA probably hear a lot more criticism and scrutiny of Johnson's policies in in the days and weeks ahead and practically I mean what what does this mean for among other things specs it in this October thirty deadline politically this. This is yet another setback for Boris Johnson but I don't think you're going to see him back down at all. He's already said to his party. I'm going to do this do or die and he has. I don't think he has a lot of choice there. we are expecting a general election coming up in November or December and certainly Johnson knows that if he goes back on his word he could lose a lot of voters in his greatest fear. Most people who who followed his career his greatest fear would be actually not being able to stay as prime minister and and serving not a very long time well and that brings up the opposition the opposition leader Pro Labor Party and you're actually covering their convention right in in Britain I mean would they have had their own problems. As as this brexit process of been going they have had their own problems. David one thing is they've not been able to come up with a policy that is clear. They're kind of straddling the fence on this but I gotta say today this morning for Labor. This was a a big victory. They were euphoric very excited. Jeremy Corbyn the Labor leary came out on stage. He said this verdict showed that had contempt for democracy heat abused power and this. This is how corporate put it. I invite Boris Johnson in the historic words to consider his position. The become the shortest serving prime ministers have obeyed okay frank. Let's summarize British politics in turmoil and we have no idea what it happens in Brexit is that said about where we still are feels like. It's been that for more than eight years. David N._p._R.'s Frank Langfitt reporting this morning. Thanks so much have you David.
