"La La Land a musical, they never would have thought, I would love that movie makes me cry. Everytime I watch it in the 2009 Star Trek. So we'll start with a more manly movie, I guess cuz toxic masculinity is fun. I love 2009. Star Trek, it's my favorite movie like gas, dude, it's so fun. It, I, when I was a kid, my, my three favorite people that I wanted to be like, where Captain Kirk Captain James T. Kirk Han Solo, and Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean and I love the, I think it was in from the sixties the month, old Star Trek Captain Kirk TV, show in this movie so well honors, the past while also continuing the future of Star Trek. And I spine is a great, James T. Kirk and it's so so good. Great movie. It's fun. I watch it. I watched it three times in one day. I'm not kidding. It's a phenomenal. It just fun. The music is great. The ending credits are like phenomenal. Like the music and the ending credits are really phenomenal. Michael giacchino made it. I I cannot recommend enough if you haven't, it's it's free Star Trek 2009, it's made by JJ Abrams. It's on Netflix, go watch it. It's a phenomenal phenomenal movie. My favorite ever? Like, it's so good. Now, my other, my second, my other favorites on my second, it's my other favorite movie. Is La La Land. A gosh, it's a musical and I love it. I city of stars. Are you shining just for me? Like, I do I do? I love love, love the music of that movie, and it feels weird to say that. But it's honest here's why I love a attention to detail the way they made the movie is incredible. There's like a long tracking shots and these really long continuous shots and amazing choreography. And like really, really impressive behind the scenes filmmaking you go. This is just a really long well-made movie. That's it's impressive how they put it together. But also the story. So filmmaking is great. The music is good. But the story is so good. It's about chasing a dream. And there's a song it's the lyrics. Go like here's to the ones who dream. Here's the the hearts who ache the foolish as they may seem. Like it's about talking about chasing a dream. And God damn, that's what I did for years. I slept under my desk in a college dorm room, recording my stupid Sports podcast, like chasing my dream and I pulled all-nighters like crazy. I was full time working as a student..

But one of the things I talked about is adopting the model or models of others if they've done it better than you right why why reinvent the wheel? It's a no-win scenario. Unlike the Kobayashi Maru just as James Tiberius Kirk, but I digress so this morning were excited to announce that our new job board wage voice First Community has went live. That's right. "Sciences that we observed as we flip resources into our Flipboard magazine over the past two weeks in this episode. We have four trends that we all share and we have a recommended reading that goes along with each of these Trends. We in the episode by peering into the crystal ball and making predictions about the trends We Believe will observe in the upcoming two weeks Abby took us off by talking about our fortunes and sharing our for recommended readings. Thank you Tim. Yes, we have four Trends three of which I think most people will be very familiar with one of which is new and we'll explain why it kind of formed its own Trend. And yes, so we we looked at everything we flipped articles that we thought were of interest to people and Structural design and educational technology into our Flipboard magazine and from the past two weeks. We've distilled these four Trends number one teaching and learning online. We saw articles about why moving to online instruction will not reduced costs for for Education. We saw an article on providing students with a sense of connectedness engaging students an article from inside higher ed that supported the idea that better teaching is going to minimize cheating which makes a lot of sense. I mean even even regardless of the the venue when uses transition from video learning to other forms of of instruction, for example virtual learning using a virtual environment home. We saw intentional online program design. We saw a Content curation versus original content kind of a discussion of which how much one should have of both. Those things in anyone online course and providing teachers with training to improve their own online offerings. Our recommended read in this area is what incoming first-year students want online learning to be by James n Cork for educause review. And again, I apologize if I'm mispronouncing any authors names. This is a really interesting read in educause and Tim. I was laughing not laughing smiling. We were very proud of how doctors worked with his we assume a member of the family because the at the end of the article it says the article was authored by James M Kirk.

What do the European election results tell us abou politics?

"We begin at this hour. However, with the results from the EU elections. I know you're saying what do I care about the elections? The EU man. What do I care over there? We're over here. Well, it does have some pretty significant ramifications, not only for foreign policy in the United States, but also it goes to sort of mentality of a lot of folks in the west right now, so called populist, nationalist movement, that has been burgeoning across Europe, and the United States is on the move these elections show, it again, according to the Associated Press Francis president and the leader of Italy's eurosceptic far-right movement jock. For the role of chief powerbroker on the continent on Monday after elections to the European parliament hollowed out the traditional polling middle after four days of balloting that drew to a close Sunday across the European Union's twenty eight countries ended the domination of the main center, right? And center left parties in parliament and established the anti forces on the right and the environmentalists on left as forces to be reckoned with the center, right? And center left had basically agreed on open, immigration and free trade. Those were sort of the basic premises of the centre-right, and central now I think most people still agree on free-trade, although there are folks on the environmentalists left who do not. But I think what's happened here is that people basically on the on the far-right, meaning the nonsense righty, just regular. Right. And the have decided that they are tired of taking orders from people in Brussels people. They did not vote for bureaucrats that are elected. We'll get to decide how they do their business, and they've also decided that they are tired of not being in control of their own borders. When it comes to immigration. One of the things about being a member of the EU. Is that if somebody enters Germany, as an immigrant, they can then move anywhere inside the EU and a lot of folks are getting uptight with this. And I think for some pretty good reasons, voters delivered the highest turnout in twenty years, rejecting mainstream politics in France, Germany, Britain, and Italy, the results could make the business of governing Europe, even trickier, leaving the parliament deadlock issues to come including immigration, a major trade agreement with the United States, global warming regulation of the tech industry. And of course, Brexit, there's been a lot of talk about the EU regulating, top-down environmentalism the far left is picked up points there. But so has the far right. Which, basically says no, we're done with this. We're not going to cram down on ourselves, all sorts of environmental regulations that make our lives worse, while the chief polluters on planet earth are outside of Europe. The outcome of the election is already setting off power struggles in France. President Emmanuel Macron's party narrowly lost the French far-right led by marine Le Pen, Macron's party was poised to secure twenty one seats to twenty two for men's national rally. Spent Monday busily amassing allies ahead of a summit Tuesday in Brussels, hoping to build a durable coalition. Now it's worthwhile. Noting here. What was originally designed to do? The EU was originally designed for a couple of purposes. The European Commonwealth, it was designed number one to have an integrated market, which most people still agree with. But number two, it was designed effectively to keep Germany down to integrate Europe for future security threats end to integrate Europe against the threat to the east, namely, the Soviet Union. Well, Soviet Union no longer exists. And a lot of countries are saying no, the chief threat right now is not coming from any external power, the chief threat right now is coming from those bureaucrats in Brussels, who wants to run our lives in Italy. That is how beanies right-wing party won a third of the country's vote. They're poised to become the biggest parties in European parliament with twenty eight seats in the seven hundred fifty one legislature by midday Salvini had already spoken to lapenne Hungary's, hardline, anti-immigrant, Prime Minister, Viktor, Orban, and Brexit leader. Nigel Farraj and was promising to singlehandedly bring together, an international group of nationalists. The centre-right European People's Party, the central of socialists and Democrats dominated parliament, but they are getting creamed. They're getting creamed in these polls writing what they called Europe's. Green wave environmentalist parties taking action on climate change, did make strong gains, particularly in Germany, where you would figure a lot of Angela Merkel's voters have been moving to the left, basically everything is becoming polarized has gone can fin is one of the leading candidates from parties in the future majority of European parliament goes thrust without question there isn't one without us in Germany, Anglo, Merckel, centre-right movement, also lost ground. A subdued EP candidate emend for Weber said, we're facing shrinking center from now on those who want to have a strong European Union. Have to join forces. Real power. In Europe remains in the hands of the twenty eight Member States parliaments influences grown they've helped improve air flight safety, and you're up they've cut down on plastics use. They've basically regulated enormous number of different industries inside of Europe. And a lot of nations are saying, I don't want Anglo-American deciding for Britain. What exactly are immigration policy ought to be Anglo Merckel is very upset about all of this, obviously, she says dark forces at play here. But the reality is that she helped break apart that centre-right centre-left coalition that has been governing European politics for very long time. Germany has been hesitant to report the rise in crime levels. Thanks to increased migration in Germany, but those increased tram levels have been taking place. The same has been true of anti-semitism in Europe, folks on the left wished to pretend that anti-semitism in Europe is purely in effect of the far right? Neo Nazi parties, which are indubitably and have always been disgusting and horrify, but it is important to note that when it comes to anti-semitism across Europe is from attic rise is in large part due to the increase in the number of Muslim refugees being taken from the Middle East. Now they're the only country that has refused to join your reporting on this, basically, as Germany. So Germany keeps saying that all of the violence in Germany directed against Jews is being directed by the far right? However, it is important to note that a lot of the statistics that they cite do not include a huge majority of the incidents as politically motivated. So, for example, there's a research and information center for anti-semitism report that came out last year, and it's that there is an increase in anti semitic offenses in two thousand eighteen over a thousand in Berlin alone. They according to the study, most incidents had no apparent political motive forty nine percents of cases had no traceable motive in politically motivated cases right wing extremism was identified as the main motive followed by activists hostile toward the state of Israel, which would be nine percent. So eighteen percents for white wing extremism nine percent for activists hostile toward the state of Israel Islamic motive was only identified in two percents of the cases. But again, that is leaving more than half of all these incidents off the board. So we just don't really know in those particular cases, and if Germany were to follow the broader patterns in Europe, it would suggest that it is anti semitism, that has led to this massive uptick. There's a report from the European Union agency for fundamental rights back last year. James, Kirk reported for tablet magazine, it found that much of the upswing is predominantly, Muslim and origin. According to the findings are dispiriting it confirmed. What many? No, but he will say that European anti-semitism is predominantly Muslim origin, followed in close, second by the left wing variety. According to respondents who experience some form events Medicare aspens in the past five years. Thirty percents of the perpetrators are Muslim twenty one percent where people espousing left wing view, that would be a majority only thirteen percents, expressed a right wing view. A third of respondents in Europe, where Jewish say that they no longer feel safe there as using are considering emigrating left-wingers responsible for a full quarter of anti semitic harassment in the United Kingdom kingdom, that is more than twice that of right-wingers and exceeded only by those views, or religious background, the victims could not describe in Germany, where the absorption of over one million mostly Muslim immigrants has propelled, the nationalist alternative for Deutsche lend into becoming the country's third largest political party, sparking fears of a right-wing revival forty one percent of the perpetrators were reported to be Muslim just twenty percent right wing. So something is getting hidden here something is getting hit in here really. The German government is reporting as they did today that eighty nine percents of all anti semitic incidents were traceable to the far-right. But this survey from the EU is finding that forty one percents of perpetrators of anti-semitic harassment were reported to be Muslim in Germany and just twenty percent right wing. That's a massive massive discrepancy suggest that perhaps the government of Germany is not being honest about its districts. The reason all this is important is because if you want to acknowledge, what exactly is happening. In europe. You have to acknowledge that taking invest swabs of people without any move toward assimilating, those people or figuring out, whether those folks agree with western values, that's going to be a problem. Any place you do. This is going to be a problem. It doesn't matter any prevailing culture, or a bunch of folks from the non-privileged culture who oppose the values the prevailing culture, enter that will create cultural conflict, and it doesn't matter. Which cultures you're talking about. And this is not to suggest that Muslims can't be great citizens of Europe or the United States at all. They can be. But if you were taking invest, unvetted, Muslim migration from areas of the world that have no history of western values are really shocked when vast one of those people are not simulating in that has some problems with it. This is I think what is driving people nuts in Europe. And in the United States this notion. The can't be protective of your country's culture by asking that folks assimilate. And then if you do that, you are some sort of racist that you are some sort of bigot. It's really despicable. And that's what the left is the center has done to the center has been doing this in Europe. And that's why more people are moving away from the centre. They're saying if we cannot say that we want immigrants who come into our countries to be vetted, so that they believe in our system, or willing to change to believe in our system. Then why exactly would listen to you or bringing in a lot of these folks without regard for that, again, multi-culturalism is such a fail in Europe that even angle miracle, and David Cameron have suggested multi-culturalism was a fail. The same England who brought a million Muslim refugees from the Middle East is suggested that multi-culturalism is a giant fail because it is. And yet, the political class, in Europe refuses to acknowledge the multi-culturalism is a fail because the alternative would be to call for assimilation or too slow immigration. It'd be more picky about immigration. And a lot of folks in European Europe, chattering classes, don't want to do that, not really sympathy reasons but because many of the countries of Europe rely on new immigrants. Accomplish a lot it can connect the show to the classic world of Kirk and Spock and also move new story forward. Still discovery has taken a lot of criticism from track fans some of whom prefer a series more like the classic show or the late eighties program next generation, but high value the bold vision of discovery, which is trying to build a new style of trek series with movie level, special effects and more modern pacing. That.

"Great Bill Shatner, William Shatner. Yes. Captain James t Kirk. This is exciting, man. I'll throw we're going to get them on, you know, it's funny that you're saying this because I I I didn't have you pegged as somebody who would be excited to hear from James t Kirk the captain of the enterprise. I was a dork man, I was a total Trekkie dork growing up until I got into college. So did you watch the original series like the TV series from sixty six to sixty nine in? I know you didn't obviously watch it when it was out at first, but I met I got into Star Trek movement. And the Star Trek. The next generation got me interested in the Star Trek movies, the Star Trek movies. Then maybe go back and start watching the series when I remember movies give from right? Yeah. Like, I I remember getting a VHS box set back in like nineteen ninety six for Christmas of like every episode of the original Star Trek series. And I was like stoked. That's all. I did that whole Christmas. Break was watched Star Trek. Well, and I didn't actually I didn't care for Boston legal that wasn't my thing. I mean, he he got a couple of Emmys and a Golden Globe for that stuff. My. Yeah. My girlfriend at my freshman year of college watch that she was into Boston legal. She's very much in the boss. He played attorney. Denny crane which you know, just for research purposes. I didn't I you know, that would have been in my wheelhouse. As far as my age and stuff, I just didn't get into it. And I didn't watch t j Hooker either. Which was I didn't watch that that was a huge thing for him. And he made a ton of money off of these. But this guy is going to be eighty eight years old. He's coming to town and more on that, obviously when we talked to him, but I cannot believe his body of work doing research on him. Josh it's unreal. How much stuff this guy has done? He has done. It all literally all well when you have a career that spans six and a half decades. It's crazy. It's amazing. What you can get accomplished. And I don't know. I'm sure he's got some great stories. I'm sure we'll be on you'll be able to coax a few out of him. I can't wait. The great bell Shatner William Shatner, captain James Deaker that'll be coming up at about five ten or so so did you take down your Christmas decorations yet eight to one WTVN one eight hundred six WTVN, John?
