"Always, are they Gardner or are they sampled? And Bret Gardner could still be playing Major League Baseball this season whereas Sam fault is literally a GM. So it kind of shows you the spectrum, so to speak, of risk reward and potential outcomes, you know, 15 year big league career, or early retirement, you become an executive or a coach or what have you. So I don't know where he's going to fall, but I really want to give kudos to Eric for a bold evaluation. And I kind of hope he's right because I think Juan is a very interesting player. He's also I assume the most important rookie or is there anyone else you want to mention? I think I did have him down as the most important rookie. I do have a few others, I would name, though. Nolan Jones has been in the upper miners going on three years now, I think. It was pre-pandemic. He reached double-A, and I just keep winning on him the debut. We used to say, oh, you know, he's he'll be Josh Donaldson's replacement. Well, Josh Donaldson's on like his third team since and Nolan Jones is still not taking a big league swing. So I kind of want to see what's going on there. They have a lot of Enfield prospects nearing the majors. I believe Gabriel Arias is the closest to the majors and he came over in the Mike lavender trade of San Diego. He's pretty interesting. It's a good glove, and I have to imagine he's going to make his big league debut at some point this year. Albeit probably later in the summer. So I think one of those two would probably be my other most important rookie, but realistically you're any of those three going to make a difference for them, probably not this year and probably not at all. It might be breakout pick, I don't know if this even qualifies, but I'm a big Tristan McKenzie believer, still, I know he's been good before, so maybe he shouldn't even count as a breakout, but he was good for parts of last season. He started terribly, and then he was great for a while, and then at the end, he kind of fizzled and maybe it was fatigue, but if he could be more like he was in his rookie season when he first came up or when he was kind of clicking in the middle of last season, I still just think like he's pretty nasty. And so I sort of expect him to put that together and I don't know whether the fatigue. I mean, obviously people have been saying, oh, maybe he can't handle the workload because of his build and the bean pole Ness of Tristan McKenzie, which is historic. We've covered that in the past just like the BNI of Tristan McKenzie. He is an outlier in that respect, and maybe that changes as he gets older or maybe he just puts it together anyway, but obviously pitching development has been a strength of this organization. And so I would see him hopefully becoming a key cog in that rotation. And I guess that rotation you mentioned it as the strength and the bullpen behind class a, a lot of questions there. A lot of questions about James Karen check who just completely collapsed last year, perhaps related to sticky stuff, but maybe not solely that and went back down to the miners to collect himself, so I'm curious to see whether he can come back, but just seeing, hopefully, healthy Bieber who made it back at the end of last season, Cointreau was great. Mackenzie, if he can be good, please second sofa being healthy, hopefully that should be a really strong unit. So I guess that's the strength and maybe also an interesting storyline about this team too. Yeah, and I would throw in Nick sandlin and Anthony goes to whoever interesting arms in the brain. Yeah. I think sailing got overlooked last year because Cleveland wasn't very interesting late in the season, but he had a really strong introduction to the majors and obviously goes a story is remarkable and I always root for interesting career arcs. So hopefully he takes the ball and runs with it. Yeah, and I am also curious about the middle infield and how that shakes out, you know, the post when door replacements, you have Andre simis, you have Ahmed Rosario. It's been hard to know which of those guys is going to play it, which up the middle infield position and also they have some prospects coming along behind them some promising short steps. Some of whom you mentioned already. So do they get displaced? Does either of them really establish themselves? I know Rosario hit very well in the second half last season, but maybe defensively not quite as great. So yeah, that kind of long-term short and second picture, I think, is a big question for me as well. And also, I guess, while we're talking about the infield, you can't talk about the guardians without talking about José Ramírez is future and probably more so than if he gets traded. And so I don't know what you guys think, whether they will learn a lesson from perhaps hanging on to Francisco Lindor, a little too long if they were not going to extend him. I don't know whether they resolved not to make that same pattern with Ramirez and they say, we'll trade him this season, whether he's more of a deadline trade candidate or an off season trade candidate. I don't know. That's not like a fun storyline for guardians fans who would rather just see him stay around because he's been one of the very best players in baseball and is still somehow underrated, but you have to at least consider whether he will not finish the season with them. Yeah. Yeah. The Rosario M and S thing is interesting because roster resource. I don't know if y'all ever heard of that website. Very useful. I recommend it highly. But right now they list Rosario is the shortstop in him and as does the second baseman and defensively, that's all messed up, right? You know, him and his entire value is being a good defensive shortstop. So it'd be weird if they went out there like that, but that seems to be what they intend to do. So I find that odd and you talked about the infield prospects, I should mention, because I just went on and on about Stephen Quan that they have, Tyler Freeman coming. And he's one of these magical types where he's all about the contact and he doesn't walk. He doesn't have her power, but he can put a bat on the ball. So if he comes up at some point late this season, I think he's going to start in triple-A. He's a never interesting one to watch, even if I'm not quite sure what his total value is going to be heading forward. And we should also note, I guess, that Terry Franco in his back and hopefully we'll have better health this season. So maybe that helps the team, whether or not it does, it's nice to have him back and hopefully healthy. And you also have to hope, I guess, that this team will not get no hit three times this season, or arguably four times, right, depending on whether you count the 7 inning no hitter or not. So that was an accomplishment that they would hope not to repeat. So maybe things will be better for them, not that they have actually made any effort to make things better for them. And I know they also lost their pitching coach Ruben niebla, who left to join the Padres. I don't know whether that hurts their pitching development, which as we've noted has been such a strength for them or not, but it's just occurred to me then that they spent $1 million for every time they were almost no hit last season. Good point. All right, well, I guess we can leave the AL central behind RJ, thank you very much for coming on and sharing your expertise. I know you're not an AL central specialist or anything, but you're able to talk intelligently about every team at any time, which is why you should follow RJ on Twitter at our underscore J underscore Anderson and read him at CBS sports where he is writing all the time. He does a bit of everything really he does reported features. We had him on last year to talk about his Atlantic league mound move story. He does break out picks. He does news blogs. He does draft coverage. He somehow became an amateur draft expert at the certified expert. I have my license, but yes, I am a utility starter to throw this back to the very beginning of the podcast. Yes, exactly. You're the Garcia CBS sports, if not better. So thank you very much, RJ always a pleasure to have you on. Thank you all for having me and stay safe, everybody. All right, that will do it for today. Thanks as always for listening. Hope you enjoyed this new preview format. We'll probably stick with something like it over the following 5 divisions, but feel free to send suggestions if you are so inclined and I should also provide an update that the big headlining.

"These the world who in camber has the capacity to mike that imagine me leave to a world where american power and purpose is obsessed with its domestic problems. That's academic historian. James karen bridge koby does washington's focus on serious domestic problems main. We should doubt american staying power in idea. No i don't think so. At all. And i think peter jennings actually put this in a really nice way. I mean if you look at american history through not for rose colored glasses. But through the the i mean. America has long had deep divisions and a pretty chaotic political turbulence. Sort of history in which you know. I think he mentioned exactly right fifty years ago. There was marches on a million people in front of the capitol people burning themselves in front of the pentagon over vietnam. Mass societal unrest multiple cities burnt to the ground. My mother grew up in detroit which used to be the silicon valley of of the united states. You know became a smoking hulk in the nineteen sixties you know riots etc drugs everything everything everything but america still end up winning the cold war that that's sort of the feature of our system that's how it actually works out in fact it may be a sign that we're grappling with problems. That may be too rosy. I think we do have very profound problems. But so of course this. China china has enormous internal problems that they may be covering up under xi jinping sort of Suffocating leadership. The other thing i would say is the one thing that republicans and pretty much agree on. That's meaningful the naming post offices and even that who knows is is the challenge from china. In fact there are actually competing over. Who's better at it. And i mean president biden and president trump. Not on the same page on pretty much anything. The one thing that senior vitamin rich before sayings china and asia or the party. And they're moving in that direction and so i think you know the proof is in the pudding. It's there in front of you. But tom with the humiliating. Us withdraw from afghanistan. A month ago you among other friends of america you've been very critical of the of us resolve commitment you even compared the debacle in kabul with the suez crisis in fifty six. Which of course. Precipitated britain strategic retreat. So why should we have confidence in. Us dying power in asia. Tom on the crisis was a strategic retreat for the uk. But it didn't happen tonight. It took ten years and the difference is of course. The economics of british leadership switched at that point over to washington will make clear. That's that's not the case here. What we're seeing is something quite different. You know the united states still dominates the world's largest economy and suddenly has every expectation to do so for many years to come in as briggs says the internal difficulties that the chinese system is facing whether it's demographics or whether it's You know the environmental challenges of sodomization of the eastern seaboard or or desertification of the north. A huge so these issues that are gonna go away what we really need to be talking about his not whether or not. The united states will stay demonstrate. Very clearly that it's going to stay in countries like japan south korea and indeed his cooperation with Australia eights how on earth are we going to manage this Current competition. And i think the way to do that is to make it very clear. That war is not an option. In the way you do that is by making decisions. Like the australian government has made which is to say that we will maintain the capability to defend ourselves and i think you know by nuclear powered submarines as these submarines is a very clear statement..

"So walter good script and he turned to me and said the script shocks could i. Oh my bookie two million. And he wasn't kidding. Oh well then. Once i got comfortable enough to have an actual conversation with him and not you know being what they call now a fan boy but just sort of trading barbs about working on this and working on that and i said you know that that scene in in the in the odd couple where you throw the bowl of pasta against the wall when you're arguing if it's called pasta and spaghetti and you throw it against the wall and say no we're garbage and matthau said no our garbage so's an instant review and critique and did you witnessed like you must have witnessed the french of math. Alan lemon extraordinary. You know we. We shot in minneapolis. Saint paul in the dead of winter which was really stupid. But it worked for the story and Both of their reps were looking for the best hotel room to stay in and it turns out there was one extraordinary presidential suite and their reps were fighting over who was going to stay there and matthau and lemmon as the story goes found out. There was a second bedroom and so while we shot the grumpy and movie the to the odd couple. Were roommates in this giant. You know with a kitchen and a piano and it was really really was something and so we would be asked up there for dinner on occasion and and So i got a chance to see them away from work a little bit. They just loved each other a lifetime. Friendship and yeah the nice thing to be part of truly was gift you you talking before about how you collected comedians names and come in took comedians into your heart almost the way. A kid collects baseball cards. I've heard you say you did that with character actors as well that you have our fondness for character actors. You've you've worked with some great ones. Own gabriel byrne joan plow right and and then giamatti. I could go on yes. Tell us about and this is not necessarily a character actor. He could be character actor at certain points in his career would also a leading man. That's rod steiger favourite gilbert's days. Yeah well y- you show them to. You did dinner dinner for five. He he was I would call him a character actor. In my opinion matthau lemon were character actors. Who got to be movie stars. They were definitely characters. And i would even push the notion as far as to say brad pitt is one of our best character actors. He's a bona fide. Bigger than life movie star but his character work in inglorious bastards is character work in in Burn after reading out to fun Even true romance. He's always looking to do. It seems to me a character rather than a a Romantic lead that way. Because yes this guy who's like the most handsome guy the planet. Yeah and year really a talented character. Oh benjamin button moneyball so many young but you know you could argue. Even money ball is sort of leading man. You're saying he's not the the main thing it seems to me. He has a real heart. Four character. Work and i mean his character. Inglorious bastards is damn near cartoonish and it's pulled off. Brilliant in there are moments of cliff booth in once upon a time in hollywood and you are on a horse. I remember you know where he's sort of leans into the character guy. I like your theory to this. There's a thin line sometimes between character actors and people who become leading men. Why yeah. I'm sort of pushing the idea of how i've collected character actors. It's really They're from very young age. It was the sidekick or the character supporting actors who really caught my attention. For whatever reason the slim pickens of the world and the bar struther martins and those guys boys rod steiger like to work with When i don't. I don't have too fond of memory about it. I mean i might have been that. He didn't wanna be there You know sometimes you just sort of sense. That was doing really solid work. And but he was. He was pretty difficult and demanding in terms of his work process. Interesting which made for of slightly unpleasant environment It didn't mean. He deserved less respect but just his process. I i Because i don't come from the theater or even a trained actor i'm there to have fun And it was rob reiner actually who almost as a mission statement at some point. We're shooting said if you're not having there's literally no point to any of it And there was less than zero fund onset. When when i did work with sorry and remember we had james karen on this show another great character actor and and he had worked with steiger and he asked him to tell the audience about work when steiger and he just said. I don't like to speak ill it did. Yeah yeah in my book. I tell it very funny but disparaging story but michael clarke duncan and he passed away about six weeks before the book was published in. The publisher called me and said. I don't know if you heard today's news. But michael. clarke duncan passed. I don't know if you want to keep the story in the book. And i thought for four seconds and said you don't get a pass for You know the stories funny. And he was a really shitty thing that he did. And there were witnesses and on the whole nine yards. Do too much detail on that one. But gilbert give since we have to gifted mimics here. Give give give kevin a little bit of your rod steiger. A group listened to that one very much. Did you buy additional one. I don't think so. I don't know i don't think they'll remember. That thing was around long. No it was a short lake. I don't know something for kids like we're going to have the pocket rockers. Like why would you have like the fucking cutting crew and betty the fat boys. Well the february snake sense because the fat boys you know like movie disorder lease. Yeah fat boys. Yeah that's right. Boys boys tape though did you. The whole yeah. Yeah i did. Non fat boys also like that song. They did with chubby checker because they did the toys a twist. That's right so they did wipe out and they did the twist. it's like. What karma fat boys one of them just died in your arms tonight into early case but not telling no return. The living dead was written and directed by dan. O'bannon do you know who that guy is. He wasn't involved in the regional. No he wrote alien. Okay wow what are the greatest ever made. Yeah dan o'bannon no a you're on the right track though john russo. Who was involved in night of the living dead with jorge romero. Jorge romero and him kind of split ways. Yeah and russo retain the rights to any movies that featured living dead in the title. The title okay. So that's what he got. And then romero was free to create and so we got dawn of the dead. Whatever did you're living. Yeah so romero was like can i get what time of the day it is and you get living deal. Sure so yeah. So dawn of the dead was where romero went and then russo went return of the living dead. I think russo originally wanted to do something more serious maybe This is very much a comedy. Oh yeah yeah. Very much comedy yeah. It's funny it's not slapsticky but it's got lots of laughs laffer riot but Dan o'bannon so yeah. He's written some Famous movies but alien is probably the one. Most famous yesterday was four directed this also music by matt. Clifford francis hands and it stars kluger famous actor the character actor from back in length of fifty s. These still around still was as the recording. Yes he's old. He was also in the feast. Movies that we His his son actually directed those. And then james karen plays frank. Don kalfa plays ernie tom matthews as freddie don kalfa. I always think of is the dude from weakened bernie's he's the guy he's the hitman. Oh yeah miguel nunez place spider which just realized that miguel nunez played juwan aman messages to david. My fucking want him in. I didn't know that you didn't realize either. I didn't realize that it was him. No me neither. that's funny. I just know him as spider demon. Yeah so same linnea quigley then other people one thing that i wanted to mention about this. "Just stick with that. That's what makes you happy blinders so much more. I heard badly pretty good. Which i had seen it but some people say it's like oh you got it. I was like i go james karen. They're like yeah but it's good. I also read the debate or the big of that. But we're all over the place. We all good this but this this is probably because like i said i love dress. I dress part. I've seen all the jurassic park Come out i did too. I haven't seen jurassic world at anything. After that i kept up with out of some weird like obligation to see if they could possibly have a different plot and feel like i should have gone to see it. But i wanna say my best friend. He went without me. I can tell you really attached to it. If that deterred you for seven or eight years you remember the time someone went without you. Because i kept thinking like i'll get it. I'll get to a video would seem to really fight for it like jumanji. I can't imagine pitching this. If you're like let's watch movies and someone's like jurassic and everyone like perks up and then like world or everyone just sort of like x. Down tried to see it actually at the drive in And it was the second feature i forget. The first movie was but it started My wife and i fell asleep. So you literally slept in your car and watch so. I read a plot like i read like plot highlights until i couldn't figure out like okay so i know like some elements but we're not seen it in a i don't think any made it into our. This is up there for the most characters were ever had in a script. We'll keep it very concise. Well in you know. I think sometimes people right. It just won't have to be a lot but like in our last episode which was fielding alone. Larry clark they did nomad land characters. It's yes did Two episodes or two characters and it was almost just two people in a marriage arguing with each other which it felt like a little more Was being worked out for them personally. And they kept referring to it as their therapy session the entire time you see the opening night. The cavities movie. I have not. It's like there's a. There's it's like a play within that movie where it's just him geeta rowlett's talking and that's why i love it but like you say it's just arguing and it's real. This felt like it had nothing to do with nomad. Land like was upset about dishes is the by the president. Did a three billboards. That is no That just as they both have the person that did the writer right the same director Nomad land is khloe How i wanna say is how your last name. Who's doing the new marvel movie doing new into the director of the writer. Which that's a fascinating movie this This thing happens every time. I see a movie so we actually and i don't want to tread too much on what we talked about last week with but three billboards a movie. I'm from missouri. I did not like it at all. It was clearly written by someone. Who wasn't there wasn't from there who's good at writing. If there's there's there's bits that are good but overall it's kind of a barber and nomad land. It was a very well made movie. That was clearly a very rich person making a movie about something that they can sort of fetish is and fan and like Not in like you know in in a harmless way of a world that they didn't seem to quite understand but it looks pretty to have big sets and that's then i found out that like i don't remember which of them is feeling larry was just like. Oh you know. Her family are billionaires. And so this is like people like to make poor porn like in movies. You know what i mean. It's fun to be like. Well look but they try real hard and they do. This seattle's on is a good company and this is all anyways. That's what it felt like to me right. I always put everything to the side. It say within the first five minutes. I'd be Is this really really really be it. You know it's like it doesn't matter where it comes from no medley didn't pull me in but what it did do was. I wasn't allowed to leave my house because of pandemic so that was sort of. I was pulled in by government. Oversight just happened to watch and it was very pretty. You know the acting is good but it's just one of those movies where you're like. I don't know if it's we're making. It seem like these people are having fun being. I haven't seen it. But i if it is that director of the writer. That's a good movie. So i'm interested because i said three billboards 'cause i got a big step for some reason i do. It was one of these avant garde director. Also francis mc norman winning wards for both of those movies like back to back years. She's also a dark bit. If she sticks with it. I think she can really carve out like a career in all this i know. Yeah just give her a chance. Forgive her of famous director would bury her. That's what's happened. She could marry half of directors. She's been one of the codes like 'cause like that. She's delivered the same house with him. At savvy of. Oh boy. I bet there were some like a model. That's why she's a dark bit all right. Let's let's let's jurassic world here. We have a lot of characters and Big whoever you'd like to play whichever. I guess both wrote this together. Yeah yeah yeah. The funny thing is is like we. We just finished writing board space. so it's like biker. Already kind of like we know each other's rhythms but we're both into the same stuff and we have the same sort of like ideas. Jokes that are that are similar so it was a fun thing for us to write and Like i've obsessive disneyland. So it's kind of where. I was going with this. Okay so who who who wants to read elliott our main character elliott sadler. That's the thing it's a girl. We don't have a girl here. It's called so abed acting well. Lesser at fifteen hundred shakespeare. Right you know what. I can do l. e. but i i. I'm not gonna do depression. Because that's okay give it. You can always precede align with who is about to deliver that line. If that 'cause this is a read so if you wanna be like and then the exact says and get into it that's okay. You can make a decision. Whatever is makes most cohesive what we could do. Because i think there is over twenty parts we could probably just as we go will will cite the parts. I don't want to break up the rhythm though like a i'm happy to stage direction I could do that and also you do so. Sorry i think it'll it'll break up the flow of it if we're like okay now Who wants to do one has come to this. Podcast.

"My co-host rally is on vacation. And so once again two guests will fill in for her first. Up is the great david. Brock of defector. Last time we talked about the yankees the new york team whose plot fortunes improved dramatically in august. That was the best of times for one of new york's teams today. We'll talk about the worst of times for the new york mets who have seen their fortunes fall just as steeply as the yankees have seen. There's rise not only. Are they losing a lot. But they're also sort of feuding with fans. Keep in mind that we recorded the segment before the mets walked off the marlins on tuesday in the continuation of a suspended game from april and the hero of that game in the ninth was none other than one of the instigators of that feud year bias. Who had an rbi infield single to keep them mets alive and then scored on a michael conforto walk-off so at least for a day. I'm sure some of the bad blood stop boiling by as was predictably booed when he pinch hit in the eighth but the booze turned to cheers at least temporarily in the following an intense or fickle and conforto said. We got to keep winning winning his all. We want winning his health. Offense what we're all pulling in the same direction here. I can tell you that the guys wanted to win this game about as badly as any other game. We've played in short winning cures all and as you'll hear shortly they have many more ill secure in l. Need many more wins in a short spent time to get back in the race. After that i will be joined by ben clements of fan graphs to talk about another swift fall. This one involving cleveland. Closer james karen check was gone from being one of the best relievers in baseball. Aaa will discuss how that happened. What it did and didn't have to do with sticky stuff. And then we'll also discuss the excellence of adam wainwright who is thriving at forty in the post. Far substance era will also discuss the cardinals who are still kind of contended. Even though you may not have noticed. And then i will play you out with some stat blasts and i should warn you the second segment of the show is clean in the first segment. David will do some swears and we have left them in. Because when you talking to someone who's a skilled at swearing as david is. It seems like ashamed to censor him so hydra kids though really if you let them watch the mets you should probably let them pick up some profanity to just they'll be equipped for what's in store. So let's meet those mets almost a year ago. We had david roth. On the show marked two milestones the launch of the website he co-founded defector and the new york. Mets brave new world without the wilpon. The good news all these months later is that it seems like defectors doing great the same. Cathy said of the mets who are doing a good impression of their same old selves after stumbling along at the top of a week division for most of the season they have completely cratered lately getting demolished by the giants and dodgers on a recent road trip. Which is somewhat understandable but also going eight nineteen in august heading into a tuesday doubleheader. They now trail atlanta by several games. They're also behind philadelphia. Their playoff odds which were hovering around eighty percent for most of the season are now down to two point. Six percent and on top of that multiple members of the team gave the fence. The thumbs down during sunday's game. It's so funny that. I can't even say it with a straight face with the parts of cisco ebert being played by heavier by as francisco. Indoor and kevin Maybe the funniest part is that. Apparently some mets have been thumbs downing the fence for most of the month but no one really noticed. Because presumably the mets have had so few occasions to celebrate so team. President sandy alderson released a statement condemning. The thumbs downing the players apologized team owner. Steve cohen is tweeting through it. Things are generally go in great so david less time you were on. I think we asked you whether you had mixed feelings. About the fact that with the mets seemingly poised on the point of competence. Your services as the internet's foremost mixologist. Were about to be in much less dement but as it turns out the brand is still strong. Well that's right ben. Defectors doing great coming on our first year live online and We're planning a celebration for all our fans it'll be online. And of course. Ed venue in brooklyn. That's september ninth thumbs up two defectors fans. Yes won't be talking about any of the other things you addressed. Don't feel like it's time yet. This is really something man. I was away for a lot of august. And i was able to keep up with the mets in the way that you're able to keep up with the mets like i have the mlb at bat app on my phone. So i knew that they were winning twice a week coming back and finding out that they've been taunting fans every time they score ronin home which is again every three game. It's really remarkable shit. I'm i don't think that. I get that surprised by the things that the team does anymore or at least i want to believe that. That's the case in this whole thing is Feels newish to me. Yeah i love it. But i do. If i'm gonna watch the team like lose two out of three games to the marlins for the entire rest of the season like i've done that before you know. And like miguel..

"Guess this morning is James Karen. Professor of modern history at the university of Sydney. Look, while I've got you, you specialize in the history of Australian and U.S. foreign relations. I'm just interested in where you think Australia sends now under the Biden administration. Vis-à-vis Trump, Vis-à-vis all those administrations beforehand. Well, on September the first, we're going to celebrate 70 years of the Andes treaty. Now, I think we're in this situation now shown where obviously there's been a lot of hand wringing and hair pulling over the chaotic and dysfunction that is unfurling before our eyes in Kabul, the collapse of the government in Afghanistan and the return of the Taliban and there's been a almost I think a knee jerk reaction to the bottom administration's decision I don't think they should have taken us by surprise. I think certainly lots of arguments can be made about whether a residual U.S. force should have been left, but ultimately the withdrawal was coming. We're in this position where publicly, we proclaim 100 years of my chip with the Americans and the prime minister at The White House a couple of years ago said we will have 100 years more of my chip. But privately, I think we're more doubtful than other of whether America has the capacity or the will for global leadership anymore. There is a country that is broken within. There is a country where political ranker and toxic partisanship whilst it's always been part of politics has reached an entirely new level. We have doubts here, I think that you'll never hear them publicly expressed by political leaders in Canberra, but we have doubts here about whether America is up for it. Some are grateful that they're out of South Asia and Afghanistan so that they can focus more on China. And China has to be faced regardless, but I think on the 70th anniversary of Andes, there are more doubts than the public rhetoric will allow for. I always think it's interesting with the relationships how much it does come down to the leader. Now I'm not sure that Joe Biden would remember Scott Morrison's name. Bob hawke turned great stories, bob hawke, real left, he was great mates actually with Ronald Reagan, who was as conservator as they came..

"A crew member in the mirror towards the end of the film after decades of watching in my son of a fix now, you can't unsee. That's right like with all the. Technology it's like, okay, this is a classic. Digitally. Removed that. Limi- out of the shot. That's right. Man In. The film was supposed to take. Place in Louisville. Kentucky but they filmed it in Bakersfield California. Oh Okay and they got all the police officers are wearing Louisville Kentucky patches and stuff like that. Are they? Yes. They had to get permission from the Louisville Kentucky Police Department to use all those badges and all my God patches and stuff. So. Right. I think the graveyard and the that's I think that's said is gone but I know that you need a medical still there but it's just the I. Think it's. I. Don't know if it's a business or if it's somebody's really cool. Lawsti kind of apartment building but still there, and that's one of my dreams is. I want go I want to go to all these different places and get my picture in front of all these you know sets before they're gone. Yeah. 'cause I know Higgins haven from king three fans burned it down. You know I wanna go see these places and just an people like stupid stand in front of these buildings yes I do yes. Right. I want to go to the Graveyard and Evans City Pennsylvania where they fell night so I want to ask In the chapel still there. So I want to go to the camp where they shot part your team I wanted to go the lighthouse from the fog and the church are printed darkness in all this I want to go see these places. Vacation. Area you go. Oh Yeah. The church from printed darkness. A theater now is it really? Yeah it's a for live stage. Yeah to live. Stage Theatre. That's like one of my favorite scenes in any John Carpenter movies that whole sequence with the dark figure coming out of the church at so freaky and surreal real as like. Wow that's crazy. Carpenters my favorite. So while they still have the house for Texas chainsaw I mean it's it's like a I think it's a restaurant now or something. Yeah. I think the Myers House or one of the houses from Halloween is a chiropractic office now yeah. I know you and I WANNA go. Get Your pitcher shot in front of the House and then get your back done. Pretty cool. Yeah. Get adjusted. Go. Maybe. He'll put on a Michael Mass and do you know? That Marius picture man if. A bit. would. Be. Well, that's what I did with That's what I was Shashank when I went to Mansfield Ohio obviously toward the prison but then we did like a walking tour all the spots where they filmed the exteriors and stuff the outside shots and. Obviously. It's all changed. That was still in the night before so But yeah, like we were saying now it's now it's this now but it's still that's where was shot so I I'm like I'm like I've stood for take my picture I want you know this is where the the brewer supposedly which actually was filmed in the prison but building were they in the movie where they you know they take the they take the shots and everything is this other building. So I had my picture taken there and and anyway it's it was a good time I. Love It. I. Love. The would you? Okay. Now we I don't know if you've discussed I think you have especially when you're talking about. Frankenstein core horror comedy is hard to pull off. Yes. Yes. It is the balance hard and if you're going for comedy, you might go too far and I think what what they did with this was they played it straight as they could and let the humor come from the page. Yeah. I would agree the only person who might have taken over a notch with James Karen but his performance was so hilarious. Yes. He was the boss or the manager the. Freddie's uncle. Okay. Okay just the brilliant balance of you know abandoned script and directing which. Word on the street was he was kind of hard court director. Like. No nonsense but A lot of people were over by the script. Yeah. Yes. and. It's such a simple simple script simple story but I the the Comic Book Reference Really Stands Out. A living comic book it really is it just? It just works so well on so many levels it's It's a great horror film. It's a great comedy It's a really wanted a few horror films and you're like, this is a lot of fun. Going into a haunted house. That's really cool. That was fun man that was granted. It's just no nonsense. You don't have to think it just it just create. They had took me with them. You know it's like, what are they going to do next? Okay. Now, what are they gonNA? Do they gonNA cover that up I can't call the cops you know I'll be ruined L.. Let's go. Let's go see Ernie and they you know they ambush him and he's like what the fuck you know is just an it's just like you said, it just keeps spiraling out of control at Carl said, they try to fix something it just gets worse keeps getting worse and it's just so good and that's Funny about it to. Make it work they make it work. Yeah. Yeah. Because He. He's Oh you did it you bring it all up God yeah now. And I'm like. Oh this happened the new the we came. Love. Go listen to that and they're like what? He can hear the screaming and the. Dead or coming back to life and like. Did we do. Oh. My God, that's a great line to it's dead screaming. Subtleties Ernie trying to move the big dresser. By the way he sets it all by. Oh God it's that reminds me of another little film mistake when. When. Brian Peck's character gets his brains eaten by the female half corpse. His his head, start spraying all over the place and they spear her and bring her into the the room. You'll see a piece of cardboard falls on top of her and then in the next shot, it's moved over. This little cool things regardless. The comedic timing that these guys had I don't. That's something that either came just. So nationally because they had lightning in a bottle casting or they were just on, that was a great take or that's something you have to rehearse yeah. At any rate timing. The three of them fighting with the Yellow Dombi. Like we discussed and then. Tom Matthews and games care and having the scene in the Office Watch. Your tongue boy if like this job this job. Right so many. There was just utter perfect comedic was especially when when he goes.

"Book but I I'm telling you now that we're on the air everything's blanking. But. There's no point something out I don't think as far as I know, I don't think there's any youtube things out there and fan things or anything I think I spotted one thing my friend that not many any dead fans haven't seen in a scene in the movie with the half. Corpse half female corpse on the table that they're talking to Paul that's hilarious. There's a there's a scene and I don't know if anybody else spotted this movie has you know like any other movie has little mistakes and things you could catch how think caught by anybody out there but there is a crew member in that seat all my God. Like mark my friend mark is just like a hold it. What's that? What's what look? What? He posited any points I and I'm like no way. This movie five, hundred Goddamn family never saw only cow and I know you've seen lifeforce right you've seen. Seen that movie lifeforce. Yes. Okay. It when they on the tape when they when they suck the life other people. Yeah. Yes. Doesn't that look like the same as the half corpse and returning very, very much so very, very much. So I would have to say this I don't know if this the same special effects team did that or I'd have to research that. But. It always always reminded me of of force when I saw I was like what's lifeforce? Yeah I agree I agree and that's a good connection I didn't think about that I know like one affects guy I guess got cans because they weren't liking his work Yes and. Yes. So like mid production, they switched over to somebody else's what I think happened and I think maybe the culprit piece of work in the film that got him potentially fired was the. I know it's kind of cheesy to some people but the awesome skeleton that comes out of the ground opens his eyes. Yeah. Yeah and they hit forty five grave's do you WANNA party. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. You could see some little mechanisms in there and I don't know if that's what got him can but. Whether you like it or not. That's my chronic moment. And, they used the shot twice. Yeah yeah they did they did. Harmon was awesome. Does not be ever all my God. He's great. He's very much EC comics love and after. The actor who I met at the Convention got other autographs and he his I told him for years. I thought I thought this was sort of intricate marionette puppet. The way you move on my I was fooled for years. I. Think you like this brilliant puppet. And he? Thought. It was too. There's actually that somebody. Yeah, and now. He took it as high as and all that and I think he said he was in the puppetry or something to so. Yeah. He could pull his body and stuff like that. That was that was saying some. level. Physical work? And then plus a makeup affects incredible. I mean, he's his tap half of his head looks like it's been burned off. You know it's just yeah, skull. Yeah, is is. and. He's like brains like what? An introduction man it was like holy crap. That things scary. Man Slime what do you call them slammers something like that or under the slime. Tarman man that's a term. Yeah. Yeah and I know when Miguel Nunez alias spiders crying about suicide getting his name, he's all gross inside me. I just love how does off the rail. Like all of the sudden it just you know what I mean it it's just. There's no way to stop the zombies which I think is so incredible. Yeah. Oh Yeah you could chop. Them and they still. That's right. That's right. So Vic departure from nine eleven and they referenced the. Shoot 'em. E- either you know killer brain or Burnham or yeah. So and then they ended up burning the you know the want and then all it goes up in the air and the rain all my God it was just so good. Yeah. Pro for every thing they try. It gets worse. Yeah it's just great. Wants to move ends that way to. At. One of the best lines of the movies which I don that is A. Is a music. I thought you said you killed if you the brains at the fucking brain, you mean, the movie lied yeah, exactly right. The pickaxe right through the head. There he's got a good point. God out a bad question by question for yes. So good. So good the. Only thing is when they go over in the half dogs in the floor and they're barking and shit I never laughed so hard oh? God the half dog that's right like oh And he's Over. The he's hitting it with the Williams. A crutch. Oh. My never laughed so hard. I have I have a dog on my refrigerator. Do you really? My God. That's awesome. And then there's always this James Karen and I think Don Kalfa maybe even. Kluger. I, think they signed something about rabid weasels on your autograph Todd I love that scene to weasel whether really not weasels all my earning was. Oh. Why don't you just kick it? Off. Shoot 'em. Now. Don't you ain't that way. I'll just turn it up. Hotter keep eating. At Home my God. God. I was so good. You know what a? Little. Thing when Ernie gets to. ripped. At a sitting down and he's ready to whatever it is ready to do is ready to do something partner vaguer brave or something, and then clips the other part yeah and then and then he goes okay let's go. Now that actually was not in the script it was an lived a he just wanted to cut the pants off and they left it in the film. All that I loved it. Yeah. I'm so glad they left at all my God. That was a right. Like really stops and Ernie. English. I was great moment. Awesome. Stops cuts his yes. Everything gets. Let's go. My God. Is Great you guys point that out because I think clue even kind of playing along because there's there's there's long pauses he's doing nobody knows what to do include just I think he says like others breath I'm sorry you know. Yeah. Yeah. Another really interesting subtle things into your being settle things about. Ernie kaltenbrunner a dime. Kelso God rest his soul character There's a there's a German Kinda. Like hidden Nazi thing going on there because. He got the German music and his headset on his Walkman. He's got German ZIP gun there are. Thirty eight pistol. And Yeltsin. It's raining cats and dogs.

"Great trick has been really good for them. Guerrero has been good, necessarily great. Bichette got hurt. I was Shed has a busy A rather has a 400 on base. Their pitching is new. Ah, good guys out of the rotation, but the Balkans a lot of unknowns, and for now that they're going, all right. But I don't know that I would trust them. The one thing that I would be a little concerned about. We mentioned the way, he says. I think the Blue Jays air last in baseball there in their lesson base for a lesson in the American League. Insensitive, run saved. They're not a good defensive team. And I think that Ah, if you look at the history of our defensive fits that The good The good seems to be good. Defensive humans on the guard teams tend to be their defensive. So either they got to get better or not. They're they're fighting the odds of something like that, And eventually there, their luck might want out. Mark Simon's joining us this morning. Bill Lasky filling in for Marty Lor just a couple more points here about the American League, and I really want to talk about this Central because the White Sox and the Twins always has always have caught my attention, and both these teams have had Some good runs in some winds. And now Cleveland all of a sudden is getting hot Cleveland white socks in Minnesota. Who do you like winning that division? And why? Well, I always tend to be the person that goes fishing first. So I would go to the Indians because they have the best pitcher in baseball right now. I think Bieber Very impressive array, a ball and two breaking balls to bury money breaking balls. 75 strikeouts, nine walks in 46 innings. I don't know if you've seen their relief pitcher James Karen Jack. But he throws Yeah is unbelievable to Pearl. He's two per inning is 34 strikeouts in like 18 innings, which is worse come from mark from their minor leagues because I tell you what he's coming out this year, just blowing people away. He was 1/9 Rand pick from Bryant University Ah couple of years ago and he has gotten what he went through the minors last year in a very similar fashion, and he found that it works at the major league level tip. They must have Oliver Prez ageless one. Listen, You're spoken to go with Brad Hand system Mackenzie. You compare him with Bieber Clevinger. On Carrasco, and they're Mackenzie's made to You made one really good start Anything one. That was OK. So you have two good guys. They're the white girls. They're going to make the playoffs and the White Sox are gonna be dangerous because it seems like they can do a lot of different things. They can hit it. Can Anderson sitting about 3 60, a lawyer that is getting very well, A Braille looks like an M v. P candidate. They can catch it because they added Grand doll. They ended Luis Robert in center field. He spared very well on the defensive side. Okay, look better defensively, even a brave in the field looks a lot better than he has in the past. Not only did they put Robert in center field, which means if they took one of their center fielders out of angle, and they moved him to write Mazarin, right, right field for them. Last year was like this disaster area for defense. And this year it's actually been pretty good, so they're solid there. Their rotation includes green veteran pitchers Toledo cycle and dollars on Giulietta Psycho right now are a very good one, too, and with stressful heard another one two's not necessarily all there yet. They're 12 is in the top 512, probably in baseball. It's elite s O. They have needs that they could show up in the next 24 hours. It could maybe get another picture. Maybe even get a closer to try and finish games out. They could try and get another started picture to give themselves Take three. Get themselves a pretty mixed salad. I think that the attacks on me and then another people like the twins. I think I'm a little more down on the twins. Then I would be on the tracks in the Indian Mark. Simon, I have pushed the pedal to the medal with you, my friend. I could talk base with you a baseball with you all day love listening to your insight, and I want to thank you for joining me this morning. You be safe and be well And once again thank you for joining me. You got it. I was Mark Simon with sports info solutions on the pre game show, and we're going to take a quick break here on KNBR. "So I think from, you know, if you're to the best case scenario, there's definite interest in Arizona folly or from winter leagues. I just don't know if that's feasible, given where we are as a country. And that precedes me to my next question. Spring training next year. How many new players? How many new faces are going to be in these uniforms? How many guys are going to be tested in in a month of spring training to try to develop what part of Triple A double A ball in rookie league? Where is that going to go in? How many new faces and Hominy players air going to be out of baseball? Because there hasn't been any development this year. And so many guys air trying to hold on at the Triple A level get an opportunity, and those guys might be out of baseball. Tell me your thoughts about that. It is definitely a little overwhelming when you think about it, you know, just just Looking at the grand scheme of things on how this corona virus on 2020 has worked the baseball world. I don't think there's an answer for a wet spring training is going to look like because so many things can change. I will say this Is I know that there will be a an abundance of minor league players who have had to give up their dreams of beer just to make a living, which I think is incredibly sad and itjust harmful for the sport to lose talent because you never know who's going to be a star, and he was going to pan out. Some of the Stars and baseball have never even been a top rated prospect. I think that's the beauty of the game is you never know who's going to make it. You also kind of really don't know what country you're going to look like in 2021. Anyway. I mean, I personally I've only wagon through today is imagining that spring training, You know, relatively normal. Maybe we have. We don't have fans. But We can kind of, you know, build spring training in Arizona and Florida the way that we've seen year similar. I don't know how that's going to affect the players, though. I mean, you were spot on they have what six weeks to prove that You know they can play here or there, or they need to be in the score What they need to work on. It's a mess, and I feel for everyone involved from a player perspective from a coach perspective from the foreign office Perspectives. There's just no right way to do it because we just never experience this kind of. Ah dilemma before and one of the big things. Katie is. You're always going to miss a development player. He might have two weeks of terrible baps or two weeks can't get anybody out and you let him go on another club picks him up. And sure enough, he'll kick in. It is so difficult to judge talent in such a short window. And so you know, I want to kind of go into this year a little bit more. Let's talk about some of the players that have come from the minor leagues that have made an adjustment in a 60 game schedule. Tell me some of your guys that you could think of. Maybe could be the rookie of the year this year. Sure, Bill. I mean, the bright side 2020 is that we have seen, you know a bunch of guys come up, make the best out of situation and run with it. I think from a nationally perspective, the one that stands out to me as a clear frontrunner for rookie of the Year is the Padres. Jay Conan Worth. He's Ah, two way player. Although he has not pitched for the party to get the season, you can play pretty much any inbuilt position. You see, they've seen the Masters. They seem that second he's filled in quite nicely with the various injuries that the Pretty hot Indian Padres have been dealing with. But what's really style about Jake Cronin worth to me is the fact that he's never really fazed by anything. This is a guy that you know was traded to the Padres over the off season. He was a top 30 prospect from can today where he came from, and then was able to crack the Padres top 30 as well. Our site might like baseball dot com. Has the Padres in the race at the top to find persons and baseball so This is not a guy that wasn't projected to be great, You know, really defense. He is absolutely run away with this opportunity. I mean, he's hitting almost 3 50 has a 500.98 A O. P s. He's just like a a core member of this padre seem that a suddenly really good and one of the more exciting teams in baseball. And none of that has mattered. He's coming, even composure. He's been really exciting to watch that my clear front runner for rookie of the year. Obviously, things could happen with another half of the season coming up. I think the Dodgers Dustin may should get some consideration there as well. But for me from the national perspective, it's Jake Cronin worth all the way. The American League is a little ah, a little more bunched up. There's no clear front runner for me, and there's a bunch of guys that come to mind. Seattle's Kyle Lewis. He made the jump last year straight to the big leagues from he's been really fun to watch Chicago White Sox who eats Robert. He's the number three prospect and baseball he's going to be one of the faces of the White Sox are also much like the Padres. Kind of rising up and becoming really exciting. Giants fans saw Oakland Theseus Elizardo maybe one of his AA. Not not his greatest start, but there's definitely think to be excited. About him and one guy that I really am interested in the American League is a reliever. And as you know, bill, it is hard to get to garner kind of any of attention as a reliever. The Cleveland James Karen Jack has a 0.5 for a and a 53% strikeout rate, striking out over half the batter that he and for me if I had to pick one of those four, I would lean to James. He's been really fun to watch any time that you see and warming up in the bullpen. For me Personally, I turned the Indians game on and I watched because he's just carving Heather's up in a way, that's that's really, really interesting. And I tell you what, what's exciting when you see these players and you've mentioned some great players and and Roberts, Of course, Lewis in Seattle, I was a name. I saw Luciano last year in Vegas. I cover the river cats and he was he was dynamited. And you're absolutely right. Probably his worst start came against the Giants because he's been electric and you go into the National.

They also have these little. Some people have. The headphones are like headsets. They flipped down and they can talk to each other in a minute's pretty entertaining frequent read. I've never thought about the idea like a specialty coffee shop or any kind of like kind of like you know small business during a drive through like. That's frigging so-called always franchises but you could probably make it a relief fun like experience. And they're set up for covid because they're already drive-thru capacity would deserve counterculture. And the coffee's delicious so I just WanNa go to Mantica and just for that reason. We did at the kitchen table there. That's an early with Darah recording it and my gosh, he was sweet. And I remember when I call him he go Gilbert my ball. Why? And you know, people know him as the path Markelle had quite a career oh silver screen. You know? I mean, he's in we talked about Hercules in New York, which he's armed the Arnold's. That's also never sang from my father, all the president's men. Fist Capricorn one the jazz singer, the China syndrome, poultry guys jagged edge, not bad Wall Street, Nixon invaders from Mars, he had a he had a big career and a lot of television. Yeah. Yeah. A lot and he he almost got killed by a mob and banned from show business because on the jeffersons he was so white supremacy convincing so the crowds were gathering outside threatening to kill him. And then finally, they what they did was they got James Karen and Sherman Helmsley, and we see to Toews together in a picture, you know, with their arms around each other who said all this white supremacist does get along. But he's okay with we's. Okay. With me. It was original black klansman. Yeah. And his story actor, here's this story. James Karen, told me, and he refused to say on the air, and you're going to honor him in death. Thanks story. Itsel he was of course, in any given Sunday for all stone along with Al Pacino and James woods. And he said we don't one of the other actresses in. It was Cameron Diaz and one time Cameron Diaz came in. And she goes, my breast feel really sore, and she says James would you were up my breast and he did. And I thought he wouldn't talk about I thought if I've Cameron he has breast. I would be torn the world telling people one man show. Yes. That'd be entire episode. Yes, I feel like you owe it to the public. And now that you bring it up. I remember his reaction when you tried to get this. He said Gilbert, I don't want her name on your. About him is I talked to him. He'd get sick. You know and be back. One hundred times. And it's like one time he said, you know, he almost died, and he said, well, I've retired. And then by the next sentence. He said, and I'm working on a documentary about BUSTER never retired. So he never. Yeah. He's he's in the the bug Donovan documentary about yes, Lester, and and when I told him on the phone when we'd get off the phone. He would always say and tell your wife, she has my simple. It's trending. It's trending the wrong to right. I'd love her most in of course, car fifty Sylvia schnauzer. Yes. I believe she did not get along with Al Lewis. Now think she was disgusted by Joey Ross. Oh well. Like, Fred Gwynne. If I have this right from Milwaukee. She started acting at the ripe of ripe young age of sixteen. She went to Northwestern University with Charlton Heston, Paul Lynde and Claude Aikman's which is kind of fun and she moved to New York and forty eight and played club. She played the Blue Angel the village vanguard, she told us all about it. She's still impressions that. She did a great. Josh audible, she did it for us on the show. She released an album shouldn't a lot of stuff. I mean, these people get known for one TV character, you know, like she was from his Barrett. But she she was a surprising guest in that way. She done a lot of stuff in everyone. And I heard when shoes missus Nile, Sarah she, and I'll Lewis found this rehearsal space where they would get into augments with each other to get into character. And one thing she said, I really sounded like like a method actor because she said, they're yelling back and forth, wasn't point Lewis culture or retard. And I think she had an autistic Sunday..

But I thought you know, I should have come here with a taper quarter do Sullivan. No. But come home will. He was lying very weak and his voice who slow, but he had these amazing stories. He was telling all he was lying there. He was he was something else. So our loved to Mike fine and rose. And we love the guy. Speaking of guys, we loved and lost your friend, your friend, James, Karen. Oh, yeah. We talked about him at length with Leonard Maltin when we had him here, but a a self effacing man unpretentious really funny, one of the nicest people I've ever encountered in or out of show business. I had the good fortune to call him about two weeks before he passed, and he said tell Gobert I still disrespect him. And I remember like I did some movie not the one of these movies had no one tracking the beanstalk. And the director knew I was an old showbiz freak. And he says, well, the actor you're going to be working with tomorrow. I think you to a gonna hit it off and like within a minute. It's like we knew each other for years. Karen?
