Breaking Down 'Shazam!'

"Finds itself at an interesting inflection point. I would say I thought she was a very fun and entertaining movie, but it did not really feel like anything that had come in the DC universe before. And you kind of explain to me. What should I am is? And what it's trying to do. Sure. I mean, I kind of had the. To do the same thing after watching the movie because like right around the time the post credits scene with a evil Caterpillar happened. I was kinda like I've no idea what any of this stuff is. So thankfully, Mike does have a a piece on the ring dot com. A great website kind of breaking down the kind of Kazan origins. But yeah, he's he was actually originally called captain marvel and like in the movie there was like a wizard named 'schisms who gave him like all these superpowers. But when he sorta got folded into DC comics because marvel had its own captain marvel he then became Zam. But the whole spiel is basically the same thing like the wizards powers you activate it by saying Zam, and then I guess in the big conversion you just become buff, Zachary Levi. Yeah, I didn't even know buff Zachary Levi was going to be a thing that I would ever have to talk about. I can't say when I was watching Chuck ten years ago. That this ever crossed my mind that he would be a superhero, I think Tony Lee. This movie is pretty significantly different from superman vs Batman and the Justice league films and even wonder woman, which I thought was you know, is a very charming and obviously hugely successful movie. But there is a lightness in the tone, and it's not quite as operatic goofy. As was l-. You know, what did you make of the kind of movie that Sam was trying to be yet? No, I thought it was fun at kind of had like almost throwback Amblin entertainment coming of age vibe like something you'd see from like Amblin in like the eighties. But with the caveat that instead of a kid going on venture or something he can just become a superhero. But I thought it was a it was it was kind of an appropriate tone for for the kind of here that this guy is and I kind of like that, you know, a kid like a teenager becoming Kazan like he has like a bit of an aimlessness to him at the beginning. Like, there's not the sort of great power with great with great power comes great responsibility type speech. You just sorta has to learn things on the fly Yemen. One of the first things that the character does after he realizes his powers as he just goes to a convenience store in buys beer and candy. And you know, I it, you know, the movies clearly pitched as sort of what if big, but superhero, and it's very effective in showing us like maybe not with the real world ramifications would be because it's a little bit different in tone in the real world. But some of the like aspirations that you have as an adolescent, and the things that you wish you could do when you were thirteen sham does for the first hour of this movie, and the movie ultimately just becomes a story about like friendship and the way that we act bigger and older than we are. And what we can get away with in that time. And then it does turned into a little bit of a superhero movie. What did you make of the kind of balancing of those tones? Yeah. I mean, I think I did prefer sort of the the first half of the move. In that respect, as you know, there are so many superhero movies out there. And I think for the most part it's sorta gets derivative to when the movie gets the guy discovers his powers, you know, like Peter Parker, like scaling skyscrapers type of thing. But it was fun for Suzanne because it felt very like very genuine response. What if a fourteen year old kids suddenly had powers like, yeah? He would try to buy beer. He would go to script strip club in like beam about the chicken wings because this is a PG thirteen movie. You know, if he's in a world where superman Batman exists, and he doesn't really know. What to do is? You just if he can't find people to save is he just going to he's going to try to make cash and become a YouTube star. It was an interesting approach. But I think like I preferred that half of the movie versus like, the Mark strong shows up with seven CGI deadly sin, archetypes, or whatever. And it's time to punch him a lot. Yeah. I agree. I don't think part was active. It's funny because it feels like a movie like this, which is not exactly a reinvention. But is a is a reconsidering of what these kinds of movies can be still does arrive and its conclusion at the notion that needs to feature a lot of punching and a lot of fighting the bad guy. I'm curious to see if as we grow inside, the D C E U, I guess much like Zam. If they'll ever change the the the approach that they take having kind of the final showdown in the final forty five minutes of the movie that was also one of my struggles. Honestly with wonder woman, which I thought as I said was really clever and well made and then ultimately just turned into Diana fighting a demon monster who was played by David through Lous. What do you make of the decisions that DC is now making to singular is each of their movies? I mean, it's interesting because like, you know, they they did a pretty quick pivot from like fast-tracking their Justice league movie which end up being like relative to the expectations a bit of a bomb for them. Also, it didn't really track critically. But you know, they're kind of like making these films that have this very little interconnectivity like aquaman was only really playing the seeds for Auckland to and I guess a trench spinoff, which I could go on like a twenty minutes handed about the trench about the trend. Can't wait for the trench. And like kind of the same thing with wonder woman sequel in feels that way, which is. To you know, if it does well enough at the box office like affiliates just leading into sham two or maybe like a black atom movie, which is like a sham villain. That's supposed to be played by Dwayne Johnson. If you look at like the C projects that are in the air like a rebooted suicide squad, James Gunn, new bad movie. Perhaps a flash movie there's all these other projects like the one glaring omission is there are no plans to make like a Justice league to and not to say that would never happen again. But clearly like the D C you right now is content. Just kind of throwing stuff out there and seeing what resonates with audiences yet. If you look down there slate, we talked about this a little bit during the release of aquaman, but I was just in add an in Vegas at cinema Khan. And they were very proud of the approach that they were taking telling their stories because the next the next handful of movies. They have is of course, Zam, and you know, they also have joker which is coming in October. Which also feels quite standalone seems to have virtually nothing in common with the movie Lakesha Zam. And then there's also a birds of prey which is. Theon story of sort of five superhero team that will also include Margot Robbie Harley Quinn, and that totally and visually looks completely different from those other two movies. And so they've taken this decision to not just make that flash movie and not just make whatever inevitable green lantern movie. And with the same kind of stormy visualises that that Zack Snyder created, but to just kind of individually each story, which is what a lot of comic books are actually a lot of comic books have separate illustrators. They have separate writers their tones are quite different amazing spider. Man could be quite different from x men and superman could be quite different from, you know, detective comics, and what's going on with that, man. And of course, I guess next year late next year. We'll have the Batman which Matt Reeves Batman movie. Do you know, your your very closely track the comp films for us is it more interesting to you of all of this the fits together or do you like it better? If it stands alone and the movies get to be what they are. Well, I. Kind of like maybe I just have a bit of a marble fatigue. Just because it feels like we've been preparing for endgame like just just forever. But yeah, I kind of like this approach because you know, like, if something doesn't, you know resonate with with audiences like I personally wasn't as big of a fan as as wonder woman as other people were which is fine. You know, I I like parts of it. But, but you know, for the most part people really enjoyed it. And I think you know, it's an interesting approach. I think what will probably be most interesting is with wonder woman command and Zam they've all been pretty well received. And they've made a good amount of money. I'm curious what happens like how the DC EU responds when something flops with critics audiences in the box office. Do they like shake it off? Or if it's like, if it's bracing a certain tone, like, you know, let's say joker is actually quite terrible. And and you know, it's like a Scorsese prestige that. Just kind of doesn't work like will the DC you kinda void being that experimental. Again. I I'm curious to see what happens when there's kind of like a speed bump on the road for them. I am too is an interesting question because it does seem like in with Shas AM and most likely joker and handful of these other movies. They don't come with that two hundred and fifty million dollar production price tag. You know, they're definitely smaller movies with more modest ambitions, at least in terms of the execution of the movie. And so the risk is lower. So if let's say joker is not the sort of world-beating, cultural colossus that many would have us believe this week. That's okay. I think that they could probably survive that. And it's an you're right. It is a really interesting pivot away from all of that interconnectiveness. Is there anything else about his that you you really liked and you responded to? Yeah. I really like that, you know, I thought Zachary Levi was was just so good at like kind of capturing basically like, you know, a kid in a swollen dealt spot ended it so well like there were times where you almost felt to childlike for guy who's still like fourteen years old, but you could tell he was just having such a blast. And and yeah, I would have never expected Chuck would be like a swollen superhero. But I never expected Jim from the office to like, you know, make some hard movie also become buffer like Michael bay film. So I I guess, you know sick. I'm stars. They can transform. Yeah. Could you cast a sitcom debauche sitcom figure into into a superhero movie right now is there? Anybody springs to your mind? Is Jim Parsons our next. Green lantern. You think? Oh god. No, no. I'm trying to think of like if someone from parks and rec ado that transformation that isn't Chris Pratt. Because I mean, he's he's just forget about this point. He's he's like a discount printing. Frazier. But he he has done that as well. I mean, I guess maybe if if Adam Scott were cast as as galactic that would probably that. That's as close as we're gonna get

Joey Badass Settles Lawsuit With Trump Impersonator: Report

"Variety dropped a pretty big news story pertaining to the suicide squad sequel that of course, we know James Gunn is directing their reporting that one or brothers their choice. I want to phrase this correctly because you're going to see in talks and all these different things out there the way they phrase it is that aegis Elba is one or brothers choice to replace Will Smith as dead shot in the suicide squad sequel. So there is nothing here to necessarily say this is a done deal. It's locked it's confirmed. He is their top choice. So that is where we stand on this first off Haley, do you think this is gonna be a done deal? And does this news. Did it surprise you? When it popped up in your inbox earlier today. I definitely surprised me. I guess I didn't expect them to replace Will Smith I thought they'd just use other characters. That. I mean, it's it's great casting. If there was no previous actor attached. I think the immediate response would be like, yes. This is perfect. It's ideal. I think it's great. It's very surprising. I have a lot of faith in what James Gunn is going to do with this given his track record with on samba lls of slightly villainous heroes. So I'm very excited, and I can't wait. Hopefully, if it does come together because the report I read had an interesting, quote that was like not just their first choice, but said their first and only choice for the role. So oh, that's interesting. Yeah. Hopefully, I think that was HR's report. Okay. Hopefully that that says good things for the likelihood of it. And if so I very much look forward to seeing address Elba nail James guns dialogue,

"Netflix will not be picking up the option for season three of iron fist, but you will still see Danny rand crossover in some of the others and actually a defenders to is not off the table. So we will see Danny ran and possibly Jessica Jones. Another defenders. Probably Luke cage. They work so well together, and maybe we'll get a heroes for hire spin off, but there will be no more immortal iron fist solo series. I'm the. Protect your line. Yes. Danny, we know who you are. The aero verse has huge crossovers every fall. This fall, no, no different. We are going to be introduced to the city of Gotham and a new character to the aero verse bat woman, they cast ruby rose to be bat woman, and they've shown some costume pictures of her and looks like they took them straight out of the comic book. This is right off the pages of DC. Ruby rose has the look. She has the acting chops the arrow verse. All those shows are crazy popular. I'm loving that they're expanding, especially with Gotham going away. CW is expanding their CW superhero universe, so might not be long before we start seeing some more of these guys in their own series. DND players. If you remember a while back, they added a new class. Old spice came up with the gentlem-. In class based off of their commercial character? Well, not to be outdone. They've made another new class. Not old spice is just made up by the fans called the murder Hobo class. If you've ever played DND, you know, the murder hobos are the players who just want to maim kill rape, torture for no reason whatsoever. Just do it in cause chaos. They have made their own class with class defining rules. Now you can actually download this from DM guild, which is it's probably not going to be considered canon for DND, but being on DM guild is probably the next best thing. If you're DM is allowing it, you might try this murder Hobo class. If that's not for you, get the old spice gentlemen class there I've played the gentlemen class. It's pretty cool. You should try it out, murder Hobo class, not into that type of character. A lot of people are, but, hey. Now you've got rules for it by now. You've heard that Disney has fired James Gunn the guy who wrote and directed the guardians of the galaxy hugely popular movies. He was fired over some tweets. He made ten years ago or so. They were made in jest, but they were taken, I guess, by Disney's seriously. They didn't like the content a lot of dark humor that they didn't think was funny. So they've, they fired him well, as soon as they did that, all the other companies were lined up at his door knocking and the one he answered for was DC. The DC universe is going to have James Gunn attached to the new suicide squad to movie. He's already proven. He can write group movies with guardians of the galaxy in just do a killer job. It hasn't been decided if he's going to direct suicide squad to yet. But just the fact that he's writing it is it's mind blowing. We're going to see probably the best suicide squad incarnation. You could think of Batiste day Batista's already said that he wants to come over. If James Gunn is directing it and play a character. I just I can't wait for this to see a movie be as popular or some of the marvel movies would be great. I would love to see James Gunn grab this and run with it and just do a whole series of DC movies. So congratulations, James Gunn. Congratulations. DC marvel. I hope the guy you've replacing with does just as well. Let's finish this up with some Star Wars. Let's start with the mandatory and show by John Fabbro. If he don't know already, the Disney play channel is picked up a big budget, Star Wars series that they're letting Jon Favreau writing direct. Jon Favreau has done an excellent job with all the other stuff. He's worked on from iron man, two zero through gemology all the way up to jungle book the live action one. Handing him the reins of this in him picking a character or a classic character. So I contacted MandA Laurean can't wait man in case you didn't know Django fit Boba fett are the main delorean's you're probably more familiar with or maybe some the ones from the clone war series.

"All right. Hey, don't fuck around. I can make some calls too. But it really was this man got out to it was like barely got into the parking lot and it was the swoop down his ass. Put over. Let me talk to you rightly. It was from. The ship was the shit was almost predatory almost like wait, wait on a runaway at the bus station. Quick. It is like a prostitute. They got him like a prostitute looking for looking for new pimp. To some chloroform or. In the car. Give. DC does not give they got things to do so reasonable to. I said this when we talked about him being fired, I said, if DC is smart, they will scoop him up and get him to the director next suicide squad, which will turn that all around because what he did with guiding the galaxy is basically a suicide squad exactly. You know what is happening here is that they've gotten James Gunn to come in and do a rewrite of the script for suicide squad to the fish. Please. This, like none of them want to do this. You know what this is. This is the wish we were marble. They still have that picture of the guy who dies ten minutes. Like anybody gave a fuck about that. Right, right. Like so. Fucking tahu. How. Be there all. I remember even in that movie, they didn't give him the full stat screen. Again, everybody else. Somebody died. Cares. Bend over again in in in this, what they're saying is is that they have him not only tap to rewrite the script but also possibly direct. And I hear that. From news later today that the guy they did have to direct which is Gavin O'Connor. He's actually out. Oh yeah, they they say here, you know, because he was he was. He was going to be. He was pretty much shoeing did like warrior with Tom hardy, and he was pretty much shoeing in the day that James got fired. They would like give them call him back James on the phone. Yeah, we wanna talk to him right now and apparently the idea that he had, I don't even think they said I did that. He had this what you mean guardians, that's what we're going to do. Wanted to do shit. We might even talk and pass..

"You know, this film was produced way before any of that ever happened. So that's not the case at all. We, we still don't know where James Gunn will end up or you know what he will be doing next. We don't know anything about this movie. There's not even like a rumored plot, snaps, there's rumors and it might be this video game. I don't even know where I think it's like blood borne, which I don't. I really don't think it is because this seems like it's a very. Low budget, indie, horror film, and I just don't see it being a secret video game of tation. I feel like it would be a bigger movie if that were the case and. You know, I don't know like what Elizabeth banks will be doing in a movie like that. So I have a feeling this is going to be more like something like the belco experiment, which she had to go wrote and produced or even slither where it's sort of like a weird mix of comedy and horror. But like I said, this is all speculation. So who who we don't really know? Yeah. Well, with it coming out in November, we should find out soon enough unless they're gonna pull like Cloverfield and released the driller you know, two weeks before it comes out, but you know, that didn't work out that well for, you know, for the Cloverfield, covert, Blaine box office. So I think they're going to start promoting this soon. But let's talk about. Fun co pop has announced that they are releasing stranger things pops, but not just of the stranger things, you know, the characters, but of the directors each would. We know, sir, Funke pop announced that they are releasing a funky pop to pack of the defer brothers that's Matin Ross staffer who the sherve owners and creators of stranger things. And this is kind of the latest in their filmmaker toy line. And I think they call it the director series. Yes, the director series. So this is going to be available at hot topic exclusively sometime before the end of August. And yeah, this is like the the latest in the director series a. we've seen directors such as Gammel Taurel Alfred Hitchcock taika YTD James won- so it even even James Gunn even James Gunn. It's true. So this is an. Interesting choice of because I don't really know anyone who really knows who the what deft, what the differ brothers look like, and even their Funke pops kinda just look like they've copied and paces the format of each of them with like different hair. They have the same Goetschi even so it just they're very indistinguishable looking men and. Could just be like generic white fan boys. Exactly. And I don't know if the brothers have that much of a following outside of stranger things. So it's kind of an odd choice. What do you think about this choice? Chris. You know, I love stranger things and I like the idea of these these director pops, but and I don't have anything against the duffer brothers, but they're just they're just guys there to brand due to got really lucky. I think it's weird. They're getting their own toys like because I, you know, I honestly think if people saw the duffer brothers on the street and they would have no idea who they are and they wouldn't be like, oh my God. There's the duffer brought like no one would ever say that look like, I don't even think they would know who Ryan Kugler was. I feel like he maybe they would is. I don't know. I just don't think the duffer brothers. I feel like Ryan Kugler is more well known than the brothers. Brian Kuhn director, Black Panther drifted creed. People know what he looks like. I don't think people really know what the brothers look like. Honestly, I, I've seen pictures of them and every time I see a picture of them, I'm like, oh, that's what they look like. They're just nondescript men. So you know, but it's fine. I don't wanna make too big a deal about it because they're more they're worse things in the world than duffer buzzer pops. I do agree with you with their book. They, it's generic. We don't know what they look like. That's the problem here by. Do you need to take you to task Chris? You said that these guys just got lucky that feels a little come on. They got really there. They first season of m night Shamlan series. What was it called? Oh, the name..

"I feel kinda bad that he's kinda slip by the wayside, but I don't know if doom patrol is the right step for that. I'm not sure. Sure as well. You know, we've been talking a lot lately about James Gunn in the situation with him being let go from Disney's marvel universe in gardens, galaxy volume three. He was supposed to be a con before, you know, that whole thing happened to surprise not surprised because I guess he tweeted about it, promote this secret horror movie that he is a producing and we now have word that is coming out later this year, Chris, what do we know. Yes. So let me preface by saying, even though everyone is calling this, the James Gunn horror movie, even Sony is calling it that it's not actually James Harvey because he didn't actually direct it. He's just the producer of the film. David, your Foschi is directing it and he's a longtime James Gunn collaborator. He actually directed the guardians inferno music video for the galaxy to. He's actually the director of the film, and we really don't know much about this movie. We know it's horror movie. We know that Elizabeth banks who was in James Gunn slither is in it. But beyond that, the project remains a mystery. This was, you know, we were supposed to get our first look at this at comic con, but literally, I think it was the day. The trailer was supposed to air comic on the news of James guns firing broke, and they obviously canceled the panel. So after that wasn't clear what was going to happen to this film, but Sony has. Firmed they are still releasing it and they're going to release it November thirtieth of this year, which is relatively soon. So I can only imagine we'll know sooner or later what this is, what the title is, what it's about. Probably you have a trailer, but for now we know it is definitely still coming out this year. It's funny because I see some reaction online like, oh, it's good that Sony picked up James Gunn after he got fired from and it's it's obviously anybody that knows how Hollywood works..

"Well it looks like it's not gonna happen James Gunn will not. Be. Reinstated he had a meeting yesterday that they were calling a courtesy meeting. That when he was hired he gave this information to Disney and it didn't change their approach to hiring them once it was called out by, some right worrying trolls that was. "I'm certainly not arguing that like he owns the rights Twitter or anything, but I just think you know for for them to. To be so shortsighted like this is so crazy. And I, I wonder if like you guys were talking about all these other studios, if they're showing all of this interest, if Disney is sort of going to get the equivalent of getting jealous basically, like relationship, you know, like somebody's hanging out with with some other other person and your Xs looking back and being like, oh, wow, actually, maybe I let something go here that I shouldn't have. So I wonder if if all especially one brothers and we don't know specifically that that we know that one brothers says interested in gun, but we don't know exactly what for you know, that sort of us drawing a line and speculating that maybe he could end up directing something for the DC subsidiary over there, but, but I wonder, I really wonder if this could be the final thing that ultimately convinces Disney that, hey, if all these other places are interested in working with him, maybe we should just hire him back and realize an admit. Our mistake that that we, you know gave into this far right organization that was operating in bad faith all from the very beginning. So I don't know. It's an interesting thing actually. Do you have any any final thoughts on this to to wrap this up? I think if they keep going, if Disney keeps going at the on the path that is now, but with using James Gunn scripted, not rehiring back to direct the film, it's kind of sort of spineless way out for them in terms of just like they basically fired him to keep the integrity of the company, but they're kind of going behind his back by using the scripts that he intended direct in the first place and to shepherd. And now it seems it's sticky. Yeah. I, I guess one last thing I'll say is that James gone has always been the heart and soul of the guardians franchise. And if for some reason, this whole thing plays out where they don't end up hiring him back, which is it's very possible that that that's what happens and they do end up using his script at least fans of the guardians franchise. Will know that that voice will be retained even though the direction will be different. I feel like the script is is so key for those movies and the understanding of those characters is so tight. You know, inexorably linked with James gun in his understanding of those characters. So I guess this is you know if this ends up panning out in, I guess. There are a couple of different ways. This could end up panning out even if he's not the director of this movie when all of a sudden done. But hopefully if they use his script, we'll at least get to feel his presence in the movie in some way. So let's move on to another big news item that broke this morning and that is that the Oscars are adding a new film category to their awards, Brad. What's going on here? Yeah. So there was a message sent out to Kennedy members today by the board after they recently met and figured out some official things behind the scenes, including the reelection of John Bailey as president of the academy for another year. But along with that, they announced a few things that they had decided during the recent board gathering and it means there some changes on the way for the Oscars telecast that will be coming early next year. One of the first things they announced that they're going to try to strictly limit the Oscars telecast to three hours. They know that the. Show constantly runs over. It's usually anywhere between three and four hours sometimes even longer, and they want to try and make sure that it's not a daunting task people to watch it to hope to improve ratings and the way that they're doing that is going to be cutting out airing some certain awards being presented during the ceremony..

The patriot you requested cannot be found. I mean, we should be sitting here talking about like, oh, movies, anywhere starting expansively, great. When some more studios come into, if I've got an XBox now I can watch all my movies, anywhere stuff. If I want to buy something on my XBox or through the window store, I can still watch it in I tunes, I can still watch it in the Google play store, and that hopefully is what's going to happen because they have prepared, but I don't want to all of it. I mean. 'cause 'cause you do you use your XBox to watch movies? Well, yeah. "The folks who are were behind sort of resurfacing the James Gunn tweets, Sern of it's a specially as gone and found tweets from a lot of different figures, including comedians, like Michael, Ian black and patent oswald's, and also the co creator of Rick and Morty Dan Harmon and so far. Granted, some of these people are self employed like Michael, Ian black is is a self employed comedian. So he stuck. A fire himself, but Dan Harmon, you know, works for a big TV show and a big network on a big entertainment conglomerate. And they essentially were fine with him. Just releasing a statement saying this old short film I made that people have taken offense to doesn't reflect too. I am now. I know it was bad. I took it off the internet five years ago for that reason. So I'm sorry if you had to see it picks clean and he continues to work on Rick and Morty to this day. So I do think the Disney aspect of this has been a little under appreciated. Sure. There are also those comparisons being drawn by some between James Gunn and Roseanne Barr whose ABC sitcom was canceled after she tweeted a racist remark that a fair comparison in your mind. He, no, I think that's a fairer comparison. I still don't think it's entirely fair comparison in the big reason is because of the timeframe Roseanne tweeted the thing that got her fired, which compared a former Obama staffer to ape on the more. Warning that she was fired. The James Gunn tweets came out almost decade. And in some cases, literally a decade before he was fired and Roseanne when she was hired by ABC to her show had many questionable tweets in terms of sort of the racially tinged things that eventually got her fired in her history. So sort of if you're a stab, wishing a precedent here, if you're the Disney corporation, you're saying you can have some skeletons in your closet online. Just don't add any new ones. But if you add any new ones, we're gonna act very decisively and that's really not happy. What happened with James Gunn. He hasn't added new skeletons at the very least. He has been very circumspect about that. So it felt sort of like this was cutting against that precedent. But in a way where you kinda had to sit and think about it because I think for a lot of people, the James Gunn tweets were news. They felt like. They had just been tweeted that morning. They had been tweeted ten years ago. Right, right, right. Quite quite divisive in. And it went right and left. You're mentioning Mike Cernavoda earlier. He has a far right following. He's a, he's a writer and I don't. I don't. I'm not even sure if he's a lawyer anymore. As you mentioned. Just part. Yeah, I don't know about that, but it that's possible this week, you know, sort of as where we are now in the stories that the guardians stood up for James, James Gunn stars, Chris Pratt, Zoe, Saldana Bradley Cooper. They signed a letter that called for Americans to quote, stop weaponising, mob mentality. Right? Was Disney manipulated by extreme right-wing activists in your mind. I think, yes, I think that major corporations are poorly positioned to understand sort of the gamer gates strategy, which has been honed to a fine point since gamer gate launched in two thousand fourteen. And that idea is basically you use a bunch of people online to flood zone and say, this offends me, this is bad at cetera, and you use whatever means you can to do that..

"What resent said was actually racist what Rozan said was racist and racism actually harms people. It James Gunn is not an actual pedophile as far as anyone knows. There's there's no reason to believe that. So it's it's like a difference in. It's just not the same at all, but the really big thing here is, are we going to allow people acting under such phony like obvious bad faith, destroy the careers of artists because you want someone to be able to make a guardians of the galaxy movie or all kinds of geek properties. If you want people, they've never made an offensive joke before you're not gonna be able to hire anyone, and that's just the truth. So yeah, it's it's complicated because it does give them this kind of perfect smokescreen because when. When somebody does something like Roseanne say something in the current time, actively harmful people get upset about it and that has consequences. But the thing is that the consequences for this already happened for James Gunn riers ago and he apologized doesn't make this content anymore, which I, of course in no way support, but like that is that is what the difference is well. And I also think even beyond what ends up as racist and the what the that he's not a pedophile. I mean, I agree with that, but I think the bigger thing is that a heat, apologize. And those were statements that he'd made in the past. Whereas the statement she said were happening now, but it does offer the perfect ideological smokescreen which will with they're using if in conversation for Chen where they're saying, okay, left-wing people yell at us. When we make these jokes, therefore we're gonna pull that too well one which she was saying wasn't a joke. You know. To you could make the argument that just as a James Gunn had a history that I think Disney knew about, and that was it was not hidden. You know, the people complain about before that he'd had to address before. Now we can debate whether he really, you know how honest he's being in contrite or whatever. I don't really know. I that that's that's beside the point. Roseanne also had a significant history on her blog on Twitter on some of her radio type things. You know, well, before the Roseanne reboot of being the way that that she then came out to be. And that was actually one of the things that people kind of said, which was like, you know, Disney new, they're getting into win when they hired her and rebooted the show to begin with. And so you know her her state, her comments after this already happened, which then kind of went to another level was on top of this past history. Whereas in this case, we don't have anything from him since probably twenty. Eleven, maybe twenty twelve of problematic south and certainly none of the pedophilia type of stuff. And so..

"We have thousands of thousands of hours of things we've said and done for the sake of comedy and and to think that people can just pull that whenever they want to do anything. Now, Disney is a company and we spent the last hundred years in powering corporations to do whatever the fuck they want whenever the fuck they won. That's coming out where I did a voice for because he was in Hercules marina voice for Hercules. You should take me out of it because I've said some horrible things from my comedy days back when. And so I'm curious to see if they're going to actually go through their roster of people they've done business with and continue to do business with and say, whoa, this is not in line with our current thing because there's nothing left. I mean, historically though, Robin Williams, Sarah Silverman like there's a lot of people are like you watch any of their stuff paths. You mean comedian's? Yeah, people who've said some unsavory things are done on savory things on him. I don't know. It's yes. The big joke is, does Donald. Have to apologize for being a Nazi. You know, like I say he dress a while ago. Well, the thing that bothers me the most about this is that Disney has made all their money or a lot of their money on dreams gun. So then they're like, all right. Well, we're good. We all need to know. And that kind of bugs me that stuff bugs me the lack of loyalty because it, yeah, because it's like maybe they didn't even bother to call, but then bothered calling in at somebody's office. Like Bob laggers off, it'd be like, hey, what's going on? James? Can you tell us about these tweets? And then they have a conversation. Bob IRA goes to the press and goes, you know what we talked. I believe he's a good guy. I stand behind James Gunn while all wa. Well, I, I mean, again, companies can do you want to. I think there's also a way you can do it where you go into a meeting and you say, listen, this is really burning us up right now. So you know, we don't have to come out and say, we're firing you because of your tweets from ten years ago, but we can part ways. We can say that it's a mutual agreement that these tones don't work, whatever like, but it didn't seem it didn't feel like that. I don't want it to be the case that it comes out and there's worse things behind the scenes that's causing this firing. I don't. I don't want it to be that feels like the right. But if it was it would feel more justified, but I don't want it to be that case. I, it's, it's weird too, and I, it's, it's a both sides. But I don't like when some sort of method like this is successful and then people feel like they figured out they created now they've created their Wm MD and they know how to use it because they soon as this was a successful other people immediately started getting attacked the exact same way and it's like, oh, now this way we can do it in. Well, this is this is even after patent Oswal, whoever and says is one of the most lovable men but never met him. But theoretically, he's beloved. They did the exact same thing. Sent him a bunch of. Out of context tweets that he's made sure. Trevor Noah and made a joke made a pretty pretty tasteless joke, twenty thirteen who's being made. And and then also Michael, Ian black, yes. And the problem is a lot of these people also are outspoken against Trump and and the conservative movement in general and stuff like that. So in not that you shouldn't be allowed to be for whatever side you wanna be. But like it's clear that people discovered a like a tool and now everyone's trying to constantly use that tool at that to me. That's scary because it's like now you're not even knowing having a conversation, no one's talking to anyone anymore, and that's how things get worse. A lack of communication whether or not you agree with the marketplace, tweet endorsing a pundit that you don't agree with at very least he was saying, have a huge, have a conversation open, open up..

"If you haven't heard somehow James Gunn the director of guardians of the galaxy one end to end was supposed to have been the direct writer, director, guardians of galaxy volume. Three was fired by Disney due to some. Regrettable. Yeah, right, right. Tweets. It's okay. So internet gonna find you? Yeah, it's Cheesman it's it's it's shit, so okay. I'm getting this from deadline. Says gun was fired swiftly by Disney on Friday after Fox News and other right wing media outlets on earth. Some old social media posts from the filmmaker on subjects that touched on rape impedance. Celia gun claimed that the old tweets were just have jokes, conservative media resurface guns old posted an effort to knock him down since he's an outspoken critic of President, Donald Trump. This this, this is going to be a pretty lengthy information dump. So just bear with me, so. Okay, these are the tweets in question. Now I'm not gonna read all the tweets, but these are just some of the ones that I had you specifically picked out one of the ones that you've probably seen if you heard about this story at all, as it's one that says, I like it when little boys touch me in my silly place sh then there's one that says this hotel shower is the weakest ever felt like at three zero was peeing on my head. Then there's another that says, eagle snatches kid is what I call it. When I get lucky, there's another three men in a baby they had sex with and then there's one that goes. I remember my first name leaving. It was the first time I felt okay being who I am. Some of those guys are still might be fess now Nambla if you don't know is like the north. American. What is it? Main boy love association, which it it's basically a group that is trying to justify pedophilia pretty much. Yeah. No. Like I said, there's there's more just just bear with me. Now I'm getting this par- from diverge. Now this is James guns. Apology after the tweets were released. This is before he actually got fired many people who have followed my career. No, when I started, I've you'd myself as a provocateur making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo as I have discussed publicly many times as as I've developed as a person. So has my work in my humor. It's not to say I'm better, but I am very, very different that I was a few years ago today. I try to route my work in love in connection and less anger my day saying something just because his shocking in trying to get a reaction are over in the past. I have apologized for humor of mine that her people I truly felt. Sorry, emit every word of my apologies for the record. When I made the shocking jokes, I wasn't living them out. I know this is a weird statement to make. In seems obvious, but still here I am saying anyway, that's the completely honest truth. I used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don't anymore. I don't blame my past. So for this, but like myself. But I like myself more and feel like I. If like a more full human being in creator today, love you to you all. And so. In in light of that. There has been, you know, obviously, Disney, put the axiom, let them go, but in light of that since that's happened. A bunch of celebrities have come out in defense of James Gunn and one of which was on the Blair. Excuse me. She said in two tweets. She said, James Gunn at James Gunn. I think you you for your talent, your decency and you're ever Lucien as a man. You prop me up when I was in a scary place in guiding me towards the decent right thing to do. You have shown strength of character more than most anyone. I know you understood in the second tweet Blair said, marvel rehire, James Gunn signed the petition, and there's changed at Orrick petition because if people are punished despite changing than what does that teach people about own mistakes. Any volving? This man is one of the good ones on director. Joe Carnahan also shared to petition the petition yesterday. And as of this story had amassed more the sixty four thousand signatures. Now there's, there's more said it was a big information that was bullshitting 'cause I, I wanna keep completely vet this story before we start to make any kind of commentary on..

"They're clearly liars. They love taking tweets, out of context, people fired. They do this guy at MSNBC and the try to do it with Dan harming on corporation. So he deleted right here, but also like corporations are just like very wolf. Like they don't understand context. It was like, oh my God, ten tweets, fire the person. But the thing about this is that it's also they're like crimes of privilege at the same time, like who is the privilege of standing around and making pit affiliate jokes all day. And who has the privilege of thinking that their voice, we'll get somebody fired, right? I was like, it is not an accident that it's all men that are getting caught up in this net, you know. So I watch it. No white men were on Twitter like white making, also to pedophilia jobs back in a day. Not even back to. It's the thing about like being provocative, right? And so it's like I look at like James guns brother or whatever, like defended him and was like, oh my God. He's an amazing person. He's great filmmaker, whatever. And I was like, that's probably all true. But you know the woman like I don't see a world in which like I'm out here making pedophilia jokes. Sport, you know, like and getting hired and also just like all of the consequences of that same kind of speech for us is very different. So I don't understand like being provocateur for the sake of it or for different kinds of speech. You know, you imagine if there was a high ranking black director or executive who got fired for tweets, let's say about white people like that's something it's all part of the same universe. You know what I mean? Which is to say that our speech is already suppressed. And when they decide to mobilize on all those old tweets, we have about white people acting certain ways. Like that's when I think it's worth it to like talk about speech, but like I don't personally, I don't think that James Gunn Israeli like a good example of like, well, I should be able to say whatever. I want to say people literally football players out here who don't have were because they're actually doing a real. Athlete who had those like really crazy racist tweets. And then he was applauded when he, oh, is baseball prime? Yeah. The breweries, there's a hometown based reason like baseball has historically low like black viewership bang. That's not my problem. I'm like, shut out to all the puppies. On your own. Kind of it's like nobody looks at what's happening in the NFL all of these. You know, everybody who's like rehire. James garner whenever none of them are like, hey, maybe if we're engaged in the same kind of exercise in the same kind of battle, maybe we should find a way to prop up these sports players assert their first memorize, but they're just out there on their own. And then people want. They want me to break a sweat for like somebody who. Jokes, and they see in James Gunn, right? They don't see themselves in those athletes. Also, James guns problem to as many women started pointing out is that he also had a history of making sexist and homophobic comments, which he apologized for. But in two thousand twelve, he was called out for making them in reference to lesbian superhero bat woman and other sort of sexes, comments online. Any also went through that home, battle with the woman who originally came up with the plot of guardians of the galaxy. And we're in the writers guild, you know. So it's like if you do a significant amount of rewrite and changes and make it your own light, your name gets slapped on it. Yes. But there's something to be said about the fact that a woman put in all that work to bring these characters to life and get Disney to green light a movie based on nobody knew who the fuck the guardians of the galaxies were, you know, at large before they green lit it, then he, you know, just sort of swooped in, you know..

"This is not just. You know, what is his name? The guy who Alan Taylor stepping in for Thor, the dark world where it doesn't really feel like there's a personality behind the camera, the the gardens franchise, arguably more than any other marvel movies really felt like they had an authorship under James Gunn and I just don't like Chris, I have zero interest. I love those movies, but I have zero interest in seeing what a guardian three looks like with somebody else, writing directing this movie Peter. What do you think? I don't know. I don't know how this series could go forward without chiefs. Go like, I don't know what it would look like, what you know, all the song choices are him. All the personalities are him. If you read the guardians, galaxy comic books, I mean, sure. It's based on them, but it is. It is more original than any of the other marvel movies in my mind. It's crazy. I want to get back to the guardians on Twitter. Chris Pratt posted a bible verse from James one nineteen. He's very religious guy if you did not know and the bible versus understand this, my dear brothers and sisters, every person be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger. It's it's, it seems like all these people involved in this franchise are very angered with this decision by Disney. And I'm wondering if Disney thought that through, Christie you have any thoughts on this. I mean, I don't know how ironclad their contracts are and all the legal entities of this stuff. But I know this were me and I was in this situation, I would put my foot down. You know, if I firmly believed that James Gunn should not have been fired as I do as you know, someone not involved with these films, I would be like, you know, I'm not doing your damn sequel unless you. Make this right. I mean, I don't think Disney will make it right. I feel like it be possible at this point for Disney to hire him back even though I wish they would. So I really don't know where where it goes from here. I mean marvel has this whole machine in in in progress, where in all these films are tied together and you know it, it'd be very hard for anyone to make any sort of definitive opinion about this. But I, I really don't know what Disney does now. I and I do think Disney is learning what a big mistake. This is because I haven't seen a single level headed person say, this is a good idea. Like the only people celebrating this are just terrible people and every. Forward thinking person I can think of has pointed out what a, what a terrible idea. This was on Disney's part. So again, I don't know if Disney will backtrack. I don't know if they're willing to admit they made a mistake, but if I were the cast, I would be, you know, making a stink about this as they should be. Also, here's something that we haven't really talked about much yet. But let's recall that guardians of the galaxy volume three was meant to kick off the next ten years of the marvel cinematic universe. And James Gunn was meant to be integral in planning that next phase of cinematic universe by introducing new elements, presumably expanding the cosmic side of the Marla cinematic universe. So this is has larger implications just beyond guardians of the galaxy volume three. This is a massive decision that will affect the entire future of the marvel cinematic universe because marvel has plans for what they. To do over the next decade. But James Gunn was a big part of that creative direction because of how guardians was going to, you know, start us down that path. So you know, getting rid of gun is just it's, it opens the whole, the playing field to something different and who knows how they're gonna handle that. Yeah, we talk about some other celebrities came out to James's defense like some Blair saying that this man is one of the good ones. Fans have started petition petition as they often do to try to get James Gunn rehired as of the time we were recording this I think has like two hundred ten thousand signatures in. That's just an like what two days or something. I'm not sure if that would you know have any effect over at the mouse house..

"And then some people are now trying to attack patent Oswal and what's hilarious about this as they're doing it with tweets that he made that were intentionally misleading and made meant to be taken out of context sometime in the future. And now people are using them as if they're things that he actually said that he believed in. It's like, you can't write parody this this like good, it's, it's just it's unbelievable. What would the depth of these people are thinking. Two. So we all agree that the people responsible for this. It is political motivations, right is not that they also stumbled across these tweets and we're like appalled and like we, we need to make sure Disney knows that. You know someone who is making films for children, said these things. Yeah. And if you want to know what kind of person lead this campaign Haida at one of the tweets going around from Mike Serna veg is where he says, have you guys ever tried quote, unquote, raping a girl without using force, try it. It's basically impossible date. Rape does not exist. So this is the kind of wholesome, conservative family values Centric people that we're dealing with. He who got James, gunfire and thing is Disney would have been aware of James guns persona an image before he signed onto guardians of the galaxy. Also because of the previous controversy hadn't twenty twelve where you had to issue an apology, and it was a sincere apology for the blog post. He wrote. Four. So why now, why in response like this obvious orchestrated attack against him and the is that a dangerous sort of precedent that it says. Okay. I think we've set this up good enough. So I wanna ask you HD. What are your thoughts on this on this firing? I don't think the tweets were good. I think that you know whatever the jokes that he made were are we're unacceptable are unacceptable to today and unacceptable back then. But I think that Disney reacting to this bad faith attack against James Gunn in this manner is not is not helpful and it it honestly only aids these sort of outright movement by to attack like filmmakers and people who have opinions against the Republican party or against against conservatives. And it's it's honestly, I think it's dangerous. Like I was saying before, I think it's going to lead to even to even more like sort of orchestrated attack against people like a. Bad was saying, all ready happening against Patton walls, wealth and other comedians. I would say I'm not defending gun in any way, but you know, ten years ago, the climate was much different. If you like, went and listen to Howard Stern, for instance, you would hear humor much like this much like many of these jokes and it was considered..

"Not to see two minutes of footage, but yeah, that's just how things turned out, but we should talk about, let's move on to talk about the main topic and that is James Gunn getting fired as the director of guardians, galaxy three by Disney. This happened on Friday HT. You wrote this up for the site. Tell us what happened. So Friday afternoon, Disney announced that James Gunn would be fired from directing guardians of the galaxy three. After helming. The first two wildly successful guardians of the galaxy films. And this was in response to the James Gunn's old tweets that had resurfaced recently and recovering controversy on Twitter, and they were old old tweets that were tweeted before he was hired by Disney and marvel to direct guarding the galaxy, and a lot of them were jokes about rape and pedophilia, and we're, we're basically resurfaced by conservative bloggers, Mike, Serna, veg, and Jack Poso plus suit post-soviet and. James Gunn shortly after issued an apology on Twitter and then issued. Another one that was released to the press saying, I will read a little bit of his press apology. Quote, my words of nearly a decade ago were at the time totally failed. Unfortunate events be provocative. I forget them for many years since not just because they are stupid. Not at all funny while the insensitive and certainly not provocative like I had hopes, but also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time. And this happened Friday and we have yet. We've had the weekend sort of mullet over and since then we've had some reactions from the garden scouts cast and a some for marvel as well. But we'll get into that a little bit later. I guess you know, we should talk about the extent of what these tweets are because just saying that, you know what, you know in broad terms with their bout, I think, can give people the wrong idea. Maybe I, as far as I'm seeing, at least in these screen shots that they've put together, he's all jokes, right? And they're all like. I know they're all these are all jokes that are meant meant to be shocking in and of themselves. They're, it's, it's intentionally byu, blue humor. It's intended to make you open your mouth and gas because it's something that's such, you know, that is actually supposed to be offensive, but not meant to be taken literally or seriously. You know, it is like this is one of the many facets of comedy, and it's nothing that attended to be taken as anything that James Gunn actually believes in or partake Zain or anything like that. It's like the the more extreme equivalent of everybody in high school. At some point, I'm sure her those jokes about, like, you know, dead babies, you know, like like there's the kind of jokes, but you tell to get a response out of somebody and that's exactly what are intended to do. And for the longest time, James Gunn career and his focus was on creating comedy that made that shocked people that was intentionally inappro-. Kriat and provocative, and that's why he made movies with trauma Trump Julia. There's a movie that is exactly intended to do just the same thing and the fact that he's being held accountable for these jokes that are, you know, some some of them nearly a decade old as being something that he is like, believe in and supportive of is actually ludicrous, not only because has the, you know, the state of comedy change in what is you know, kind of okay. To make fun of that kind of thing is a little bit different now, but it's just these are intended to to be jokes, you know, and that's comedy, like works in a variety of ways. And some of it is in isn't ways that people don't entirely understand, especially if you come from, you know, a place where you have conservative beliefs and so it might be hard to understand some of the people..

"Turnby. Everyone in Chris Evangelista. Oh, okay. Before we get into this, I want to thank everybody for listening to our coverage of comic con. We are exhausted. I also want to thank each t. h. e. in Ben for kicking butt while we were incendiary go because it seemed like there was just days filled with lots of news. And normally we would have done an emergency podcast about this James Gunn news, but our staff was literally spread too thin, so we just couldn't get to it. So you know, and it's probably for the better because I feel like having the weekend to think about this and to formulate in opinion, it's probably going to do us all a little bit better think. But before that I do want to say Comecon was exhausting guys. I don't know. I'm not sure if it's the fact that you know marvel wasn't there. HBO wasn't there and net flicks wasn't there with their big things. So there was less exciting panels. There wasn't really any big surprises out of outside of, you know, Disney, bringing back the clone wars animated series. There. It, you know, there's some sad news, John snap, who was, you know a director of that superman lives documentary and a colleague of ours who worked at clattering a bunch of other outlets, you know, died of a stroke was looming over the whole event. And then this James Gunn news hit and it was just it was. It was not my Comecon the I've been going for, I think eleven or twelve years now and I, it just felt wrong, Brad. Do you have any postmortem thoughts on this year's con-? No. I mean, I'm pretty much right there with you. I've been going for. I think this was my ninth year and there was something about it where it just didn't feel quite as exciting and I, I don't know if part of it was. It seemed like maybe we were running around more because the panels are more spread out instead of spending so much time in hall h. or if it was, you know, like you said, a lack of. Marvel and some of the bigger things and the lack of surprises that made it feel not quite an exciting or, you know, just the cloud. But yeah, there's something about this year's common con didn't feel quite that. Great. Like it's I wanna say, like outright say, man, this Comecon sucked because I still had some good times and got to hang out with the slash Rome crew and picked up some things from the show floor. But it just didn't feel quite as magical or as exciting as comic found has in the past. Chris Zere first comic con. Wh- what do you think? Would it all your thoughts? I think I'm glad I did this and I never wanna do it again. I knew what I was getting into in some sense. You know, I knew about the lines. I knew about all that stuff. At the same time. I wasn't mentally prepared for all of this, and I don't know if I ever will be, you know, I don't want to oversell it as like this, you know, torturous event because you know in in the end, I did have a good time with certain things like I loved the Halloween footage I saw was amazing. You know it was. It was great to meet. You know you guys who I've never actually met in person before, and I got to see, you know, some other people I know. And so stuff like that was was great, but a lot of it was just it just gets frustrating after a while and when you boil it all down, you know, waiting in line for hours to watch. Two minutes of footage is is like the act of a mad person and the fact that it's become this huge thing. I can't really quantify in my brain and you know, by the last day or I guess the second the last day. I was I was in line for something I was outside. I was covered in sweat, and I was literally about to just be like, you know what? Fuck off everyone in front of each book off. So yeah, that's my Comecon takeaway. Well, the be fair. This is not been the typical communist, Brad, and I suggested usually you're waiting in long lines to stay in a hall all day..

"He's definitely I don't agree with that. I don't know if that clearly makes him a pedophile. I think it's just a joke that goes too far. Probably touching reality. Gimme year might point to what he may like behind the scenes. I don't know, but I I'm not ready to say definitely a better for the year, and we have James Gunn pictures of him in court defending himself against pedophilia charges. I give it a year until Takashi six nine is dead, but I will say these are the good point. These are the Pam Beesley years when he was dating. Pam, Beesley are married to her. But no. I mean, he came out and essentially said that, hey, I'm provocateur early in my career. I said a lot of dumb shit that I said just to piss people off. Should he be fired from Disney because of that now, what is thing? I, I don't think it should be fired, but I do think that someone should speak up and say, you know, he, he fucked my son. I think I don't think it should be fired off those tweets, but I think he's probably a pedophile. You guys heard it here first on hard factor.
