"I know we argued about it on the college football show but I do think that style points are going they I think they always matter one because I think the test is a big thing but I do think this year it's GonNa play even more into it because of the different amount of games at conferences are playing and whatever else claims it doesn't need to prove anything but if they. Destroy Notre. Dame. It is very. It's a very big statement made. Wouldn't you think oh? Yeah it's like the way. I don't think they can but destroying them with. Shockwaves, statement. Yeah. You think Notre Dame's GonNa. Win I. DO Think Northampton Win The time I make a bet on it. How many times are we gonNA do this I have retired from bets you've retired from for making me Duvets. Yeah. That's true. Kyle Brazil says. Alabama's new Oklahoma in that. It doesn't matter whose quarterback when you have the weapons they have. They also won't choke in the playoffs his mattresses good as that's not new for Alabama. Alabama has won national titles with guys that you know what's up what I noticed today. I saw a stat that since two, thousand eighteen. Alabama scored forty points in seventy three percent of the Games. It's far and away the most in college football in from two, thousand, nine, two, thousand, twelve, they scored forty points or more in thirty percent of their games. Here's what makes us interesting. Since two thousand Eighteen Alabama hasn't won God. Damn thing in two thousand and two, thousand twelve they won three national titles. So I. Bet most teams have scored forty. Points have been in the what's have been up but. Alabama still seems like their straying from their recipe a little bit and when they get in these games are identity doesn't really fit I. Don't know where it is. It's a we set it all the time you know with with every quarterback that won a national title for Alabama. It was like it was a guy that fitted Nick Sabin. System. When they have the to talk by low as of the world which there aren't very many of them they they're not winning. While they won the like they don't have won a national title, they don't. They don't have to have a big name guy for that to happen Mazen Blues. His James Franklin, is the worst endgame football coach gets a pass from everyone because of a lucky blocked field goal in two thousand, sixteen, one third best team won the big ten championship two thousand sixteen that sounds like a Michigan Fan. Still, salty. Penn state won the title instead of them. In Twenty, sixteen the he's not he's not wrong about James Franklin making really bad decisions. No Jane Franklin is worst engage Franklin Stephanie a lot more bark than bite i. think that's the best way to describe Jane Franklin. I like that and NS S W mole path says there'll be five undefeated teams is here come selection time. The committee will be forced to show bias exposing how crappy a fourteen playoff is Oregon Ohio state Clemson Alabama Oklahoma state maybe even Cincinnati Byu and or boys only Oklahoma they can get through undefeated because I think. To Oklahoma and I think Oklahoma's getting right I feel like Oklahoma's knock him off. And what I like hearing, you say that no, I do I'm being real. Are you gonNA Apologize to Spencer Elliott. Have I ever said anything else around? I'm not that bad speak ill of Lincoln Riley and his refusal put a defense on the field I. think it was more about the media's response to Spencer Rattler Arrests Missouri stayed writing which I was correct Miami had their bad game of the year that will be in contention to play. Plymouth. Again, at the end of the year, Notre Dame will get badly Clemson says David Rosario? Everything you sat as possible, but it seems like the bloom is off the rose a little bit for Miami. There is no such thing as running up the score people are soft. This system rewards teams how bad they be people if it wasn't for injuries, I wouldn't even take out the first string hanging one hundred on everyone if you can. You don't want people embarrassing you don't let them I think that's stupid I. Think there's a time when the opponent is out man and you should. Respect should play into respect should play into it for to a certain degree, but also keeping your first string in just to potentially get them hurt us really really dumb really real. Just score on the next year your second story is going to be I drink run. Yes. So you want your second-string to beginning reps in garbage time. That's the whole point. I. Don't. If I'm Clemson I'm not leaving Trevor Lawrenson. When they're up by seventy fucking points conferences should have only one non conference games as Justin Yeah and then start conference play too many teams have played records going to conference play an end of the season when they should be playing teams in their conference instead. I see the value for a program like mine who isn't we'll have the SEC playing four non conference teams to get good bulk position but. I fucking love this. I love the straight conference play. It's so good. Yeah. It makes everything. So much an orchestra able to put everything in a bucket and then just compare the buckets, the season and every single weekend. The game is up in the air for the most part. You don't know it's not like a key the cupcake weakened in the SEC. Well, I'm going to watch an SEC game this weekend a couple more. Okay. I love this when so much. This is amazing. Alabama. Is paying off the refs to help Auburn win so they can continually beat a badly coach Gus Malzahn team each year make Auburn suffer that might be my favorite heartache task. That is genius. To probably explains it Nick Auburn give favorable treatment Nick Sabin doesn't want Gus Malzahn. He Gus Malzahn there. So he can just brilliant I love that. That's a conspiracy theory is we we start? Can we make it a thing? Won't take it. We'll see what from Hamilton. I I'll take it. You genital twitter this weekend, you should tweet it but Hamilton thanks for the idea or wh-. The heartaches next next episode, we're we're two hours. Now we've got to get out of here and we still have a couple of things you got one more no I want to end on that one I think Hamilton. In on that one. And then who on the Weekend Casey? The big ten just coming back and showing some n showing the I mean the guy that said the the the big ten is not any good. It's crazy like the hype around the big ten coming in yesterday was already massive and they delivered in Amazing Fashion Martha also to state obviously, they didn't need to quote win the weekend but they looked fucking Austrade who on the weekend from North Carolina I'm sure that's what you're gonNA say. No I was not going to go talk by the starting quarterbacks like petsmarts, Milton Finley, how they came out and showed out friendly at Lsu Mertz. Wisconsin. Yeah Yeah. quarterback. Name known this week. I'll be interesting to see what happens the next week because what happens if one of them turned into the next Castillo? Brennan. Hey Dad. Hey, what the fight I mean am I like. Illinois did not play Defense Whatsoever Jack on the weekend. Michigan. All everything is encompassed with. All right. It is but I I'm shocked at this one. Got To me with the last pick I mean, how did the Indiana win the weekend? Well I I said the big ten. Yeah. I think Indiana with its biggest wins. Nineteen eighty-seven emissions. Goldman. Michigan. Came in quietly and and and really showed showed up but I definitely think. And quietly Oklahoma state. Just sitting there undefeated and and they ate one of their main contenders I had written Indiana..

"We'll tell you why he could become one of the most important players ever, and then what will all of this mean next spring Mel kiper and our GM explain what no season would mean for the NFL and the draft all that and more as we get up with you starting right now Mike. Greenberg Bristol. We welcome all of you been watching. Korean baseball. We're delighted to have you here on what is a monumental day. This is a developing story from the world of college football, and if you've been paying attention, you are aware that two of the power five conferences could decide the fate of fall football in a matter of just hours from right now leaders of both the PAC. Twelve and big ten are expected to vote today on whether to postpone football possibly all the way until the spring up. I will be a meeting involving big ten presidents at ten thirty, a m eastern time, and we obviously following that closely. Now speaking of the big ten Jim Harbaugh coach at Michigan yesterday released a statement in which you discussed at length the success that they've had with the testing programme amongst his football players and said, we will continue to follow all health and safety guidelines teach train and coach those young men and their families that have put their trust in us while at getting for football season in the. Fall he wants to play. So does James Franklin head coach at Penn State he released this statement while we all agree there is much uncertainty. The best decision right now isn't a cancel the season I. Implore The big ten consider all possibilities to preserve college football this fall. Our conference intentionally built a flexible schedule allowing us to easily postpone the start of the season. Let's delay see clarity build the safest environment for our guys and make the best decision to coaches speaking out. So we're players here's Trevor Lawrence. And that was the main thing. That's what we're pushing for right now. A lot of other stuff out there that. Knows Online, we'll have to make decisions and maybe those things can happen but right now. We WanNA. Play us over here to do as we love to do I'm just saying we'll play whenever whoever, whatever anywhere. We just won't play football. We just we just want to do what we love to do. So there seems to be a lot of that within the sport but obviously, these aren't the people who ultimately make these decisions and this is just the beginning of the squad that I've put together for each day. Greg mcelroy's Paul Finebaum. Is here and heather insider will start with. You know you've been busy all morning already filing a story as we look ahead of this meeting of the big ten presidents at ten thirty am eastern time. What do we know? What we know is that this could vary in terms of impact. The two most likely scenarios that I'm hearing are that the president either decide to push the start of the season back to September twenty six or get much further, and they postponed fall sports until the spring after more communication between the president and the athletic directors it seems that there's definitely a shift in their mentality, but they're also paying attention to. What the PAC twelve does they are meeting today as well now. is, making visualize decisions but Greenie as you mentioned, these are in the hands of the president's I expect a decision today to come out of both the big ten in the pack twelve, their understanding that I'm asking you a question that probably WanNa live can answer I think a lot of fans and I would include myself in that are sitting back in looking at this just take the big ten the. Big Ten in the middle of last week released a schedule three days later, reporting from you and many others that they're now talking about canceling the season and now two days after that, it seems that they have at least softened on that position or are rethinking it. How would you describe what is going on amongst the decision makers in the big ten that there seems to be this constant back and forth. There are some disorganization to be quite frank. Maybe you could characterize it as a miscommunication, but I can tell you that the shift in momentum from last week to this week from all of the conferences because remember it wasn't just the big ten everyone announce their schedules last week and part of the shift in thinking was more of a concern about the unknown lasting impacts on the heart specifically from the Corona Virus I talked Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thomson last night and he said the unknowns are the difference. The Mountain West postponed their sports last night as well, and that was a big factor for their university presidents. So that was the. Start, in the shift now, look there are a lot of questions that the big ten is going to be answering reporters and media alike regardless of what they decide but I can't say I think part of this people need to Remember Commissioner Kevin Warren is new he's is in a high stress situation Jim Delany, was there for a very, very long time and everyone knew what to expect so I think part of this is the big ten is learning Kevin, Warren and Kevin Warren is learning his constituents in the big ten at one of the most historic moments in the conference's history an unprecedented moment everybody's history I suppose. So Heather. You touched on this a little in in your first answer. But what specifically is the impact of the highest profile and most powerful? Coaches in the big ten speaking out as they did James Franklin Penn State Jim Harbaugh Michigan Ryan Day Ohio state the these are the biggest programs in the conference and they are making no secret of the fact that they want to play. They're making that very public. What impact does that have on the president's and ultimately the decision? It matters it certainly powerful and impactful, and it's taken into consideration because those coaches report to the athletic directors and the athletic directors in the big ten are telling their president's. This is what we think a source in the conference. Told me last night that the majority of big ten athletic directors are not ready to pull the plug on the season they're listening to their coaches, their trainers and their physicians. So how much that influences the president's remain to be seen but as loud as the coaches? And players yell at the end of the day, this decision is in the hands of the university presidents who are coming at it with a different perspective. All right. So before bringing everyone else I suppose just to sort of encapsulate the conversation here there's a meeting today in the big ten in the morning and the PAC twelve in the afternoon by the end of this day, it is possible that both of those conferences will make a decision to postpone football possibly even to the spring. That's right. That's correct. Okay. So we know where we stand this is an extraordinarily consequential day heather outstanding, and so here's the rest of my squad for this morning, and again, they'll be many more to join us as we go. But Berger is here with us alongside Greg mcelroy and let me start with you Mr Find Bam as you listen to all of this and boy, there's a lot to digest here. What are your top level thoughts? Not My top level Greenie are just the continual dysfunctionality of college football and not to keep saying the same thing over and over again but this is a both in the middle of the ocean with with no engine no direction, and that's really the issue So why did the big ten presidents two days ago decided to shut down and today they're not so sure They have the same information I talked to the MAC. Commissioner yesterday Jon Steinbrecher, why did you shutdown Saturday?.

"End up like basically ending them early. But the point is he took over a program that was reeling from that that it had at least I think to smaller recruiting classes and they won the big ten in his third season I don't I'll never understand why that wasn't more appreciated at the time and it's certainly been forgotten now. Now, devil's advocate that was five years ago. This is completely has programmed completely his recruits and I think that Penn state fans. At this point or measuring him against they, they WANNA see the program be would it was peak Joe Paterno and they're not there yet and I don't know if they'll get there You know I think that that when they beat not only beat Ohio state but then. Could have certainly been the I was at that game at twenty, two, thousand, seventeen at Columbus. saquon Barkley. They blew a really big lead and they lost by one point two J. T. Barrett they lost by one point to them again at home the next year at that moment that was when Franklin gave the whole. Not Re- monologue. If you will about how we've become a good program we need to become a great program and they haven't really followed up on it since then right I mean can go eleven in last year but it felt a little bit. Can I count this still? Yes you WanNa talk about peak Joe Paterno and obviously this is a slippery slope to go down too much joe paternal stuff I get that but just talk about the record of of their success. You GotTa go back twenty five years to find a stretch where were penn state finished in the top ten three out of three out of four your stretch and remember there in the toughest division arguably in college football right now they're not an independent they're not in a different kind of big ten where where it's way more water down I. Mean it's a tough. It's a meat grinder division right now. So again, I just think you have to look at that in total and I I don't think you're making this case but like start counting down the list of coaches, you think right are more accomplished. Have done a better job than James, Franklin, well, I think that this. Shows you the first of all he's being held to an impossible standard but also just how much the playoff and basically. If you want to everybody measures everybody now about the playoff whether they won a national championship and that being the case, there are two elite coaches in college football nobody else nobody if you if that's your standard than it's Dabo in Nick Sabin and everybody else else's a trump because think about we're talking about him Franklin, being overrated there are people who think carbon smart is overrated there people who are going to look at what Lincoln Riley House he can't hear both thank Lincoln Riley is overrated. It's like if you don't win the National Championship in your first few years, then you're overrated I mean. When I do those top coaches list, there's twenty five spots to fill and you can't fill them all with saving in Davos. So I, I'm not gonNA reevaluated after one literally one game in the big ten season. But yeah, I'm I'm not jumping off the James Franklin bandwagon and and we'll see go if they have a bad season. You know after. I mean this is a team that front from like last season I think Penn state fans kinda treated as You know free money like this was the year they were pointing toward win Sean Clifford would have another years experience all those running backs, and of course, we thought they would have Michael. Parsons. Let's not forget. They lost the best defensive players in the country so. They end up having a bad season if they end up finishing. Behind Indiana, in the big ten standings than yeah you'll. You'll have reason to criticize him but let's not. Let's not forget everything before it just yet. This is how this is. How fickle those rankings I think if I had asked you in two, thousand, eighteen is Gary Patterson. A top ten coach I don't remember your list but I'm guessing you would've said probably, yes, absolutely Gary Patterson it since two, thousand, eighteen you his record is combined now you can't be good six, ten at six and ten by the way in a in in a really mediocre power five conference right now I think Gary Patterson's brilliant defensive coach and I think he's done a great job at Tcu but I think that's just the thing that speaks to. Kind of the level of scrutiny I think. Everything gets micro analyze like this. Darabi harsh is a pit fan and and for that I I just say Mike don't. You Think Darryl is harsh. Israel name. While it's a very specific spelling of Daryl Da Walk D. A. R. Y. L. Ear you're thinking he made it up. No I'm thinking the be harsh is just to Where's this question going? Two years ago I wrote you guys a similar problem pit fans under this season with high hopes at three hour flying high. At three and four, an embarrassing loss to name. All hope is gone we're looking at three and eight or four seven at best are issues or not cooled related. What do we do? I. Think that it's fair to say at this point that. It's not gonNA happen he's been there six years and they just can't string together any momentum or any any consistency I do think they could rebound here and win a few games with play Clemson and he's lost at least five games every season so far and I you know Clemson will be the will be lost number five this year. So on nothing they're gonNA fire him by any means, but I don't think he's Suddenly your six year seven. GonNa lead pit that Laurie. Yeah I mean, obviously, they haven't had Kenny pick the last couple of weeks. But just as you said, I mean it wasn't just like they lost seventeen to seven I mean they got They got smoked by team that really struggled in the offense to hit any big plays the week before against Louisville and I don't know it definitely feels like. Both pit Virginia Tech, there's there's a bunch of teams in the ACC you start to feel like optimistic about them, and then all of a sudden, they just completely lay an egg and this was a lot more than that and like and like Darryl said it has just been just been disappointing. and. I don't know much more to say about that I mean I think it's a good job and pit has amazing football history. If you look at the people who've come from there, it's obviously has a pretty strong recruiting area around it. There's a lot of you know has really good facilities. and. I don't know I mean I thought they would have been a lot better this year he knew who be perfect coach for that job..

"The hundreds of responses I think I got once I there was a fantastic picture that soccer for the Center Center Daily Times took. And half the people said see, that's definitive proof he was out at half the people said, that's definitive proof that he's in. So when that's the case, I think it's pretty clear that they couldn't overturn the call on the field and I do wonder if the you know in a it's a split-second decision who knows but if you're the official. I would think you'd rather err on the side of its in and let the replay overturn it than to err on the side of. Denying them the chance to win the game the game would be over and because they wouldn't have the proof to overturn it. Yeah, I think the question you know look going back to. Do. I think Jane Franklin in the Post Game said that. His players were instructed. Hey Bill don't score a touchdown in that case I. Mean, you just kneel on it three times with whatever I think it was A. It was a minute and forty five or minute forty, six left. And you just take your chances at that point as opposed to risk a fumbled exchange. Or anything else that could have happened. Is it a different story and obviously that's hindsight. Just it was a great way to have the big ten back I. Know if you're a Penn State Fan, you certainly don't think that because now your own one and you got Ohio state next. James Franklin for whatever reason is somebody who Fan. Fans of other teams are just like desperate to get us to acknowledge that he's overrated and Penn state fans can't stand his. Game Management and I think that was such an unusual situation. I can't blame Devon Ford for following his you know the instinct of any college football player that you have a chance score touchdown, score a touchdown and I would say that I would actually I don't know why this this one didn't get mentioned but they when they kicked that fifty seven fuel, there were still eight seconds left. He didn't think he could run one more play and try to. Show. I. Live. Maybe end the thing was that was a fifty seven yard field that was from fifty five they win the made it. Yeah. Yeah. He clearly had faith in his kicker and he almost did make it. They had a lot of chances to win the game and also the the the final score obscures the fact that Penn State's defense. Before Indiana drove down the field at the very end, I think they were at like a forty four yards of offense for the whole game. So you've got defense that played very well, you've got you had any number of Kansas to win the game, but they didn't, and now it's like the sky is falling I will say that it was not a good. If you know if you're a penn state fan who were going into the season about the receivers, this game certainly did not answer those questions at all and. I mean I think journey Brown and when you say receivers qualified. So you mean wide receivers not pat with the tight end right wide receivers outside of Dotson who was like the only Semi proven guy coming into it and use the only guy that made any plays and. Obviously I mean they lost journey brown possibly for the season that was announced this week Noah King goes out on the first series and suddenly that four headed backfield they had last year was down to one. Yeah I mean the. The that's that's everything right there like right. Kazaam there was a couple of throws missed on the turned into picks and. Again I mean you don't WanNa write anybody off after one week and I'm not suggesting to do that the one thing i. Thought about and I. Look I heard this on our big noon show urban who's To say it very adamantly that Penn state was after Ohio state the second best team in the big ten now that we're sitting here, twenty four hours less than twenty four hours after the first day. I don't know how you didn't watch what happened in Minnesota last night thing Michigan is a lot more dangerous team than Penn state Joe Milton backed up all the hype I was here on from the people who are inside that program. He is very talented and he is feels like a difference maker Nahmad saying he's GonNa have the your Justin field last year. But he big arm physical Rauner and he seems to fit in that offense. They have a lot of speed. The thing that also stood out to me was they have a really really nasty defensive line and you saw that that was a pretty good team. They whipped last night on the road. So I'm GonNa ask you this and I'll ended here's an opportunity. We both kind of probably auto. Our were kind of really wowed by Gram Murtaza's accuracy on Friday night with the Wisconsin passing game. Right now on Sunday morning. The second best team in the biggest threat to Ohio state is. You want me to say Michigan I. Don't know why you wouldn't at this point, but please tell me based off one game you would but I mean look we always wildly overreact two week one the Salangi now even I think it's even more extreme this year because we waited so long to see them play week one. And obviously it's kind of like Lsu Mississippi state, right like you just don't know until a couple of weeks later. Like maybe Minnesota is much worse this year than they were last year especially on defense you just don't know, but there's no question that was a great showing by their offense and they looked explosive which is. Not, something I've said often about Michigan under Jim Harbaugh. The only reason I'm hesitating is Wisconsin is always a threat in the big ten and. They have a quarterback now, which is. Something I haven't said since Russell Wilson We'd be hearing about grammar. Since he was probably junior high school and all he didn't as I reminded me of I'm not saying he's Jameis Winston I wanNA make get clear but we'll remember. Four. Where's this going? This is going to you remember James Winstons. Game. Yeah. I think. Almost didn't he was very similar. We're GONNA. Grandma's had warning completion the other night it was something. That's all I'm saying is like a very similar circumstances where you've been hearing about the guy, he's he's going to be the save your quarterback than he comes out in the first game and could not have a better game now. It could be the year. They finally have a quarterback is the first year and in the history of recent Wisconsin football, they don't have great running backs. They certainly weren't impressive the other night but. That's that me is a game changer. So I'd like to hold off at least a week before making any grand declarations of course with Michigan you just it I mean. You don't WanNa get sucked in yet again, and then it gets the end of the year they get housed by Ohio state again. But yes, one game you're doing big ten power rankings after one game I pretty sure you'd have Ohio State one Michigan to and Wisconsin three if you're a betting man and after the last few weeks, evidently you are because I hear you're hanging out at the Ot be you're you're you're betting games every chance you can. I did my first ever third-quarter bat last night in one? Yes. So since you're a betting man. Who Do you think right now if you had to bet on one team being having the best chance. To win the big ten, that's not Ohio state who would you bet? Isn't that the same question it is, but I'm trying to get you to answer it well. It's not really in question because you have to think about the divisions there.

"Be more excited about having Kirk. From Long. Conti Pennsylvania originally experienced play caller what he was able to western Michigan and Minnesota was extremely impressive, and we couldn't be more excited about having her with us. He's going to make a significant impact force, but you know the reality is when her you know. I needed to hire someone that understood. You know that this isn't broke. You know we we've. We've won eleven gangs three out of the last four years. You know we finished you know in the top pen and pre Houston number five in the country, so I needed to hire somebody that was willing to come in here study what we were doing. What fits the system? System that could stay, and then he did it Minnesota that was really well, but fitness system, and we could merge the two systems so hiring somebody that had enough humility at said look I'm not just going to come in and install my offense. I'M GONNA. Go wait, and we're going to sit in a room for hours and meeks and grind through this and have discussions to come up with the best system moving forward for Penn State, and that's why Kirk came, and that's why a hired him, and he got so many years of experience, and and such a you know you know such and flexible background that that help. but at the end of the day you know Kirk also understands that hired him to come in here and be comfortable with calling the game the way he's used to calling the game but I I think that's important. We have a penn state offense. We have a Penn State Defense, and we have a Penn State's special teams and we have a plan that's worked in a model that's worked. We're going to tweak it each year and Kirk. Kirk support of that tweak on offense, but but we we expect to not only be L. explosive productive this year, but but take it to a whole `nother level with Kirk leadership. Well, the openers less than ten weeks away against Ken State and let's hope in ten weeks coach. We're talking about football. Right? 'CAUSE Our fingers are crossed. HOW THIS PLAYS OUT! We do appreciate the time today. Thank.

"That we would have liked to have been different on. You know, I know in some ways probably people look at that one play, but there was a lot of plays throughout the game. That That we should have been definitely should have done differently and could've handled better could have made place. So you know my job is the head coach to make sure by clearly understands of situations and obviously Right there. That didn't happen. Look. The irony is that Penn State should have won this football game. That wasn't a good two point conversion. It wasn't The Indiana quarterback panics Rolls left extends his entire arm and body goes vertical, essentially and then horizontal. Teo get to the pylon that ball hit the ground before it hit the pylon by a millimeter. But it did hit the ground before hand. It should not have a two point conversion, but the refs called it a such they did not overturn it on the review. Indiana wins a dramatic, amazing game, but Penn State can't make the college football playoff after losing to an unranked Indiana team. It's not gonna happen. So simply because James Franklin may have said it but didn't impress it upon his players enough. He blew his chance to play off. Simple is that Simple as that, And it is sad that one decision like that could do it. But I don't see how Penn State goes to a playoff having lost Indiana. They'd have to have a lot break their way and they have to beat Ohio State, obviously, and they have to go in 2 ft. Of the rest of the way and then have to win the big 10 championship game. A lot of things got to go their way and all those games have to be played, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. That may have taken them out of the playoff because he wasn't forceful enough. His player clearly didn't get the message. In the NFL today. Jimmy Garoppolo has a lot on his shoulders not only to San Francisco desperately need a win in Foxboro, but of course This is against the Patriots franchise that traded him away and opted for Tom Brady. There was a story today by Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, saying that Niners are not wedded to Garoppolo beyond this year. They're guaranteed money to him. He's gonna dry up after this season so they could go out there and look at a different quarterback. And remember that Kyle Shannon has success and a history with two veteran quarterbacks that could be available. Matthew Stafford and Kirk Cousins now I don't know if I would trade I wouldn't swap Kirk cousins in for Grapple. Is that really an upgrade? But Matt Matt riot is that right? Absolutely is Should Jimmy G be worried that his struggles a couple of weeks ago against the Dolphins could still rear their ugly heads? Well, my ankle's feeling a lot better than the one I was in the Miami weak, so I think that will definitely help out a little bit. But as far as the scheme, you know, it says they come from the same tree. But I mean, that type of defense of scheme is so you just gotta be ready for anything. They could do what they're showing a film that could not s. Oh, it's kind of just died. It's a game plan defense and he's got to be ready for a game adjustments. I was very impressed by the Niners ability, too. Win and win easily over the Rams. And so they kind of wash the stink off themselves after that Dolphins debacle. But Jimmy G hasn't washed the stink off him. And if today he goes, the Fox looks completely outclassed by a Belichick defense that let's face it is pretty limited right now and in the talent that it has If the Niners go to Fox Fur and Grapple looks overwhelmed, outmatched. Clueless. You've really gotta wonder if Garoppolo is the guy I know they were the Super Bowl last year. Into this offseason. They opted for Garoppolo over Tom Brady, saying We want the future, not the temporary president and Brady. Well. Let's face it right now. The Niners would be a much different team with Tom Brady than they would with what they have in Garoppolo Grapple might not be 100%. That's part of this equation. But he needs to play well today because he might be playing for his job. I don't know how many times you could come up small, a big spot. And have the Niners in the offseason. Say Yeah, we want to go back into the Jimmy Garoppolo business. Huge game for him. And finally in Miami. It's a bye week, but the Dolphins this week decided to turn to the rookie to a tongue of I Lo. Uh, I spoke to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald who covered the Dolphins this week on my shown here was his reaction to the news. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I got the news yesterday, because for the very reason you just mentioned Look, this is a good football team right now. The record does not suggest how good they are Their number three. I believe in the FC and Point differential. And Ryan Fitzpatrick is a big reason why they lost close games. The Seahawks Bills Patriots, and they just absolutely took three bad teams in the wood shed. I guess the Niners aren't a bad team. They were at that time with Rob Lowe, not healthy. So no, this is a team that probably would have made the playoffs that they had made the change. Now we have no idea what the future has in store for this team for the last 10 games of the season, they have the tent. Easiest schedule. And Brian Forrest team as it was last year, as it was for years of the New England Patriots gets better with each and every week they would be better in November, and they were October and better in December than they were in November. So, yes, I think they would have gotten in on our 10 wins. And they needed the 7 ft. Or even won the Adam Beasley, The Miami Herald, saying he thought with Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Dolphins could win the A F. C East. Everything I'd go that far because I still think the bills were the better team. Oh, boy, I love with Brian Flores is double that organization and that roster and that team. I thought this was a mistake. I think this was bad timing by the Dolphins. I know you have the bye week, but I think that dictated to much here you're playing well, you had back to back blowout wins over the Niners. Hand over the Jets. Fitzpatrick had clearly been moved. The football well played some of the best football his career. I think there's a value in winning games in playing important games and not giving up the ghost. And I know that too has got to be the future And I know that you want to get him reps. I just think you wait on it. Why ruin the Momenta MME right now that you got cooking. Why do it just because the bye week is here. Wait to see how the season unfolds a little bit to me before turning to to, uh, Coming up here on the show. We're going to go out to Vegas every Sunday. This is a team that's going to be probably preseason. Top Five I'd be surprised if they're outside the top seven when you look at who they have returning on offense and defense. Before, we get to James Though. House vacation treat you pollock, but say some people aren't vacation. They still have to hear from your sorry butt. So I mean it's even. Worse for May, not vacation is vacations. Grand I needed A. I needed a reprieve I. Don't know about you Kevin, but a lot of time at the House and I looked at my wife. At one point, I'm like all like I just. I need to see a different house like I just need to see something different like i. don't care if it's trees, I don't care what it is I just need. A I need to go. Look at something else so I think it's been nice. Get for beach for a couple of days instead a couple of days more and so it's been it's. It's been a lot of fun. I've been. I'm rapping vacations and I were taping this Sunday night. I'm rapping a vacation just now after being for the last ten days from sports sportscenter as well as just anything. ESPN related and Taylor are fine producer and I were talking before we started this, he asked me if I got away. 'cause we were planning on getting away and we did not go away. We were supposed to go to Newport a couple days ago, and like this morning I, woke up, and I was just like looking at my wife, and I was like this is Groundhog Day? We love our house, but it just feels like it's groundhog day every single day. If you have kids, especially, it's like okay. What are we GONNA do today. How about we ride bikes and we're not complaining. Because everybody's safe and healthy, it's just over and over again the same stuff we're just missing sunny and share. Waking is up every morning. Now I feel we we've We've adopted a bunch of new hobbies, and we've scare the piss out of our neighbors, and on the regular now because my kids and their friends have so, how about this my kids? They're addicted to air soft now. And they have vite the guns that first of all they look really real, and they have the masks that they're wearing. You know all over the place and they're going through our whole yard. We live off of a road where you drive by, and you can see. Everything's going on, but they've started to take Howitt's in put it to put them in the woods and build bases and baby. Oh Yeah. I've used the hammers in the nails and I got my buddies coming over there builders. Fifteen pallets at a time, and they just take them in the woods and goes start building stuff, so we've you know we've adopted some air soft life, but yeah, we definitely look each other occasionally and just like they have I feel like we just did this, but you know what it's all saw. The one good thing about this pandemic for US I. If there's anything good, trust me I'm aware of what my words are right now. Considering what we're going through as a country is that the time that I've had with the kids where I could teach the boys to ride a bike and now every night, their data's go out riding bikes and that type. Amazing I wouldn't have been able to do that. Where Sicily every day. Let's keep on practicing on practicing and. Today was a big big deal. Let's go down these hills. It's like. Oh, you're good to go. Go down the hills. You know we'll Kevin. How many times have you said life? If, you looked at your wife and gone man. I wish life would slow down a little bit. Yeah, well like God slowed us down like we were all slow down like the the world has. Come to a standstill for in our lifetime more so than any, and so it's been amazement a blessing. I think for a lot of people. It's not just me, but I've I've just heard so many people that talk about dinners as a family and so many people playing board games and INORDINATE amount of time I've loved not having baseball and softball, because my we, my sons or my daughter's tournament every weekend. Were coaching, and and it's just there's a lot their practice. That goes into it now. You know we don't have to worry about that stuff. It has been off I'm not saying I Miss Sports I love sports, but I would have told you this. I would have said that. We are sports family through through and we're not. We're not Lincoln from that. We we. We can't live without sports. We definitely can live without sports and yeah, we've we've shown ourselves. Our families weighed more than sports, and even if we don't have sports, we're still having a good time together and enjoy life and and and going along. Along just fine, so it's definitely showed our family that yeah, it's definitely a good reset, but here's the thing you know we. We also are in this business. And you got into the position that you got into because of sports same here because my passion for sports, and now we may, we may experience a screeching halt here this fall. Because the numbers the reality is, they're not going down in many states when you look at the testing and in fact Texas. Florida California Ohio Michigan. Arizona, they've been hit hard at Texas Tech on Friday reporting twenty three positive Kobe nineteen test results among football athletes and. Kevin let me ask you a question. Did, we did. We not expect the numbers to skyrocket like I am I in the minority of going. We're going to bring seventy eighty people back together who have been in different locations all over the place that are now going to come back together by the way testing readily available testing often like who didn't think that this was going to happen you're you're one hundred percent right I. Just saw. I'm very confused by people that. Look like Oh. My God, can you believe this Yakim? Believe it and yeah. I'm with you on that, but I will tell you this that I think that we were all expecting tests to come up positive at every program. Just because that's what I mean more than two million people in this country of tested positive for Kobe. The stunning thing I think though is. Well how new cases seem to slow down in late spring? Right and then and we've seen in mid June now. This trend upward nationally and I. think that's the scary part I i. think that when you enter this point where you know, we were in the spring, and we're saying okay. Hopefully that it will go down and we could get in front of this, and now the concern is that Oh goodness everywhere you go. The numbers are high, and now I'm concerned I. I have. Have General concern about whether. We're GONNA. Have season whether it's going to start on time whether we're GONNA finish on time before at one point, I was like okay. You know I think that by September. We will be in a position that we can do, but here here's the thing that separates college football from all of the other sports were talking about you are on campus, and many of these campuses feature fifteen to twenty to thirty to forty thousand students, and it is impossible. He to twenty two to make sure your containing this virus, if it spreads well especially when there's no, there's there's not there's not a real threat to those kids, and you know as well as I do and we don't when. We start to think about more people than ourselves. When you're eighteen, nineteen, twenty twenty one. You think about yourself ninety nine percent of the time. It's just a fact. I did and I think and I think these kids do, but you know what's what's interesting to me as we're getting all these cases and we're GONNA. Get them all out of the way. What's the first team? Is that Clemson now that is. Is Self contaminating. That's basically saying. Let's just kid everybody..

"Maybe service, sir. Last night in Indiana Pain state was a top 10 team. The Hoosiers had not beaten a top 10 squad since 1987 in Penn State. Had a lead and the football with under two minutes to play. All pensive has to do Is hold on to the football drain clock and not give it back to Indiana. They lead by a point. Instead. Indiana decides Let's let him score. Penn State does. It's running back, tippy toeing into the end zone saying Should I go in? Should I? Now What am I supposed to do here goes into the end zone. They're up eight. Indiana comes back down the field and score. The game tying touchdown and two point conversion has sent OT that ultimately wins in dramatic fashion in overtime. "That's out there and some of the technology that's out there and some of the signs and sits out there to make the best decisions for your program without losing that toughness that grittiness that you also need in our game. Coach I'm I'm here with this because I'm a first time head coach just finishing my first season as a high school head coach I think you like the fact that we use. We are for High School Mantra. But if I had to ask you one question I want to ask you about culture building it and maintaining it. You've done it at two different places. How do you build it? And how do you maintain it. Once you begin to have success. Yes so it's interesting one of the things that I think first of all that we all better be careful of whether it's culture culture whether it's standard whether it's cloud corner we have a tendency is coaches and leaders to throw these terms around. But we've never truly been able to articulate or define what that word means in our. I mean how. Wait Times you've gone through a whole sees the end of the season in ninth grade or a freshman goes coach. You've been saying cloud quarter all year. Long what the Heck's cloud court uses assume they know and I think it's the same same way everybody throws culture out you read books you go listen to speakers you hear coaches and they use the word culture thirty five times in their presentation but have you ever really defined it. That players know what you're talking about so I think one of the things you have to do is whatever you're talking about in your program you know whether their core values or whether they're your overall philosophy you can't assume that people know what those things are for me you know It's making sure that players understand number one that you care. It's gotTa start with relationships building that trust I and the relationships with the players because I believe once you have that you have the ability to take the program and the kids to a level that they're probably not able oh to do on their own. Why because you can be really challenging and demanding on people if they know it's coming from a place where you're doing this because you care about them and you care about the program and when you have that trust and you have that respect and those types of relationships then you can really do some significant a significant things not only as a team but also individually so it starts with that it starts with trust the thing I would also tell you is? It's amazing. Amazing what you can get done within your locker room with identifying some weaknesses. Maybe things that have been there for a long time and getting them affixed so like for example when I got vanderbilt. The locker room was in bad shape. Well that locker embiid in bad shape for a long time and the administration supported me to get it fixed fast so now they saw a guy who had a plan a very clear plan he had a vision and I was fighting for them to get things done and they saw it happening so it gave me instant credibility with them. I'd also make the argument. It's amazing racing. What you can get done with a hat t shirt and what I mean by that is I as a as a high school coach? You're talking about is the first time I would set up ten meetings with influential people in that community. The Superintendent principal the mayor. Whoever it may be invite him the lunch and they're gonNA be sitting there waiting for you to ask them for something and you don't ask for anything and you give them a hat and a t shirt and you ask? What do you know about this community now? Now that you wish you knew when I got here give me that information and you don't ask them for anything you give them a t shirt at the end of the at the end of the meeting you say to them you say. Hey if there's ever anything you need from me or our program don't hesitate to reach out and those guys leave that meeting and they say hey this guy really care about the kids. This guy really cares about community and now when you do need something down the road and you call. They're more willing to help you because they know where your heart is and how you're invested so you've got to create that culture turned out bion in the locker room but then you also better do it in the community because when you can get some of those yeses when you really need them. They're going to be valuable. That's great advice. That is outstanding coach. Coach we've got Sheet full of notes. Here just a couple more things when you look at Co Scott's Garfield who coach me at APP state. He said the one of the big keys for him when he took over there was open the door to the head coach's office you have players. Come in you've talked about building relationships. How do you go about doing that? One on one with the kids. Yeah I I think you're exactly right and I got so much respect for coach. Who will we played them? Here at Penn State Last year and we were lucky to get out of there man. They played great against us. And he's doing a great job. Louisville's well obviously but yeah. I think there's a lot of as doing it. I think everybody uses the open door. You know philosophy and I think that's great. I always tried to maybe take some other approaches. That maybe aren't as common or as Cliche and the wrong way coach. Misinterpret what I'm saying but everybody says an open door so what I try to do is try to identify identify. Certain amount of guys every off season and I take them out to dinner and we do the Thursday night dinners at my house with a lot of coaches. Were you have a position group over to house for dinner and and that's really good but I also think spend one on one time like you'd mentioned is really important so what I did is identify vice. Certain on our guys each off season go out to dinner with one on one talk to them. Ask them how their families doing. Ask them how schools go. What are the issues? What are the problems? What are the challenges? Oranges what do you like about the program. What don't like about the program or the head coach? What would you change and just sit there and talk you know and and you know the only bad part again? Is this a state college so I ended up going to the same Burger joint like thirty seven times in a row when it comes to show up but but I think that more than anything. It's not just the information you gain but it's just taking a moment with that kid to show them one on one that you care and that you listen and those things go along ways you know they really do and and the other thing. That's always interesting as the head coach. Is I miss being with a position because the position you've got to know that those guys on one of very significant level because you spent two hours a day with them and sane guys over to your house every Thursday night. My wife still very close with all the quarterbacks that I coached at Kansas estate in Maryland and in those places but as a head coach you never really get enough time with any of the players to build it on the same level that a position coach would so you have to work hard that you know but what I will tell you is there's value because you may not know any one one group but you know the whole team better and not just know the whole team. You may know you may know an individual may be better or differently because you you learn things about him from three or four other conversations you had with other players that allows you to put the whole puzzle together and and to me. That's what we're all trying to do is the best way that we can make. Decisions as leaders is by having much information. And if you're getting information from your staff ah you're getting information from the administration if you're getting information from the community and now you're also getting information from your players at the end of the day. You GotTa make the decision but the only way you're gonNA make great decision is by having all or most of the information and that's where the relationships are critical coach. I know you've gotta run a practice actor so last thing we've asked us to every guy we've got some great stories best high school football player that you've ever seen could be somebody assigned didn't sign but just best high school go football player you've ever seen we've heard Alan Iverson. We've heard Frank Gore. We've heard unbelievable list of player so we want to get your answer on that one. It's hard for me to say that because I'm GonNA pissed a lot of people that'll say then that I know everybody's done it. Everybody's done it coach. You GotTa do it man. Wow you know who got Sammy Watkins. He's got a ton of votes from from coaches to really hard. It's hard for me not to say saquon Barkley a sequel on loud loud like a whole. It's hard to go against. That guy is a cool picture that I got in my basement with me and Sean Spencer. My D line coach. You had that recruiting area and it's a picture taken from a local newspaper and shot over saquon shoulder. saquon back shod over his shoulder and me and Sean or standing ending on the sidelines scouting the game and this was on was saquon. You know so. It's a really cool shop. I'm I'M GONNA go with my man saquon then wrong. The coach nothing right. You're allowed coach. You're allowed hey thank you so much man again. We've got pages four notes that we learned a lot today and no. You've got a busy week ahead so thank you for your time. We do appreciate it. Thanks guys have a great day thanks goes. Hobart can't coach Franklin enough for his time. They literally had his coaching gear on headed out to the field for practice. So it's great to catch up with him big takeaways. I thought the toughness conversation is interesting. Do you do you recruit it. Do you develop a lot of times. You hear people. I'll say you know it's really fifty of one fifty other you've got to find some toughness but then we really build it. He made it sound like more like eighty twenty. You GotTa go find tough kids because you're not. I can have the same opportunity to train them to make them tough. Yeah I think there's something to that I think inside either. You have it or you don't have it. You can kind of bring it to the service a little more but ultimately if you are tough resilient person like that is in you you can kind of show them the way and give them the tools but if he's not deep down in them I think players have a tough time kind of exhibiting those traits on the feel. Aw I think the thing that he talked about that was really interesting. was hiring us who understand where they're going. Meaning sexy hired a sexy school but but what about when that same coast doesn't have all the resources. izzy resilient resourceful enough to be able to work around it. Obviously with James Franklin He. He came from a situation where he didn't have all the resources so now you give him more resources he is able to kind of take a program and take it to a higher level because he he has more access to other things and so I do believe it was great advice to those who are in the hiring cycle. Who are hiring coaches? Know what your coaches use used to what he's accustomed to make sure that you bring them to a place that either matches that or you may need to look to somebody who has called the ball kind of working a little harder to to count do more with less. I think that is great advice for him. Absolutely they'll thing I'll leave finished with here. I thought when he talked about getting to know the staff the players in the community get to take the time to learn your environment that you're going into before you come and blast them with all the plans and all these great ideas that you've generated across the country where you may be worked previously. Get in there and find out what the needs are what they like what. They don't like what they have what they don't have. And then then you can craft your plan and present your plan. I think just coming in there knocking them over with your plan before you figure out. The lay of the land isn't mistake. I that's great advice not just in the coaching role. Oh but even outside that world you take a new job take a little bit of time to learn a new surroundings. Yeah think so. I think you have to understand what you're stepping into every school. Every situation had his own culture. You need to make sure you kind of ingratiate yourself to the culture understand what the coach is before you begin to make these radical changes absolutely well. It's a fun conversation there there with coach James Franklin we continue to have these conversations on a weekly basis. Hope you guys enjoy him as much as we do. That's going to do it for us today. Thank you so much for tuning an end to move the sticks. We'll catch you next time yeah..
What does Clemson's No. 5 playoff ranking mean for the Tigers?
"The college football playoff ranking is out the first ranking this season and is different in the polls well hi status first than LSU Alabama and Penn state in the top four Clemson out of the top four Penn state's in the playoffs we are completely focused on Minnesota preseason rankings mean nothing middle this season rankings mean nothing as you may have guessed James Franklin the new alliance played at Minnesota a Saturday afternoon plus they played Ohio state in two weeks and for that matter LSU and Alabama go head to head

"In the side here for the big ten is they cannot afford and certainly last year could not afford for Notre Dame to not be affiliated with the conference in go undefeated. The moment down happened. The big ten was doomed and what we've got to remember here and I think Pat Fitzgerald Herald mentioned something. That was very wise regardless of whether we have the B._C._s. we have the College Football playoff the one thing that you're not eliminating is subjectivity and when you put those people in a room and you start examining schedule and you're you're looking at this data point and that data point right and you're talking about the eye test. If you're notre dame and your undefeated. You're going to create a problem for the rest of the power five conferences. If there's a team that's viewed equally because they're always going to fall to the side. Outta the undefeated team in that happened to the big ten last year because of Notre Dame real quick lubes remember who Notre Dame played week one a big German team handle your problems because I'm with you wholeheartedly but the big ten has complete and total fate of its destiny just handle handle your business look at some of this has to do with competitive balance. The big ten Ezer is better than the big ten west they tried it with legends and leaders but they got knocked for that so they did it geographically and it's just not even but you hear some solutions. They're excuse me James Franklin Luke San we should have discussions and he went on to say about doing away with divisions of so that we can have a more likely champion you buy that listen. I think there's a lot of ideas that can be thrown out there. That need to be discussed need to be debated but the one thing that I do agree on is they're not all playing the same amount of games okay now. Everybody has to play a championship game to me. That's got to be rectified before we do anything as far as the visions in any power five conference agree wholeheartedly. There's no clear cut solution. If you do try to do what James Franklin is recommending emend up doing what the big twelve has done. You have to see a team twice Michigan wind up playing Ohio State Ohio State Oh backdoor and play Michigan in the championship game. There is no easy answer well. Let's be honest Ohio. State didn't miss out on the playoff. The big ten didn't miss out on the plow because of divisions or data points losses to Iowa and preview. You've got to beat those teams. If you're national championship caliber team up next here on college football live fifty years ago this weekend the world changed with a trip to the moon which team is prime to make one giant leap and we'll look back at some of the great leap. We've seen here in college football this Saturday. We'll have one giant so you have to fight card highlighted by welterweight half A._l...

"He got a chance to talk to James Franklin NCOA coach Lotte Roster Movement from last season. What is your approach to a season like this when you have so much turnover on your roster yeah a lot more questions this year than we've had in the pastors? There's no doubt about it but that that's where your development that's where your culture and that's where your program really needs to step up so we've done a pretty good job of that. Were excited <hes> but it is going to be new. It's going to be new for our fans. It's going to be new for the media. It's going to be new for the coaching staff but <hes> our guys have done the necessary things and we'll go into camp and figure out who your guys are going to be one position where you lose. Someone like trace mcsorley than Tommy Stevens decides to transfer. What is a guy like Sean Clifford have to do to win that starting job this year? It's it's like it is at any any position. We got guys. That have a lot of skills that can do some. The some spectacular things but it's consistency that's what trace was able to do at a high level for so long he was able to consistently be able to do his job so <hes> that's what we're looking from Shaw and that's what we're looking from lettuce and the freshman as well so <hes> you know how to great spring has had a great summer so far so we're interested to see how those guys are going to compete you know come come volcano speaking about those nittany lions fifteen percent chance to win big tinny East over and under eight and a half wins. That's kind of what it said that at right now overrated properly rated R. underrated. I'd say underrated because yeah you rush reference the eight and a half wins but and their offense it might be a bit of a work in progress especially early on but you look at this defenseman I mean they have stars coming back guys. That's a really broke out last season and Mica Parsons the second level and you think about detour Gross Mahto so what he could do upfront so I really liked his defense and that's really going to be what Kinda keeps them in games offense kind of figures out who they're going to become but this is the team that it's many people don't think are in the top twenty five and yet here. We are projecting in the F._B._I.. We're projecting the one nine games here at E._S._P._N.. So I I'm a believer in James Franklin. I'm just a little worried about replacing the intangible qualities that trace mcsorley leads leads with upon graduation potato quarterback thing to properly rated looked at Penn state team is GonNa matter in the East what you do against Ohio state and what you do against Michigan and they have to go to Ohio state and it's tough to win in Columbus for Penn State Trace mcsorley missing on this team is a huge deal trace mcsorley found a way to make plays in fourth quarters of games when they needed it and that is something that you don't know about a guy until you get in that situation you're gonNA have talented quarterback talented players but in in the fourth quarter when you need a play they could always look to trace mcsorley and he would find a way to make a play. You won't know if you have that guy until you're at Columbus Ohio stadium in the fourth quarter and a close game and then you find out if you have him or not you. I don't know that so I think they're properly rated. That's why I think the big ten is going to be so interesting with the S._e._C. as well Art Scott Frost entering year to over in Lincoln and guess what you buying into the big red height are you how what team is is going to take that monster length in two thousand.

"An apocalyptic evil Monday. But it's a little different. Because now we have minor league football. The alliance of American football. Guys who? Didn't quite make it. Or washed out of the NFL. We'll try to resurrect their careers. And if week one is any indication Christian. Hackenberg is not getting back to the NFL anytime soon. So Christian hackenberg. Once an incredibly highly touted high school prospect went to Penn State flourished under Bill O'Brien for a year flopped under James Franklin entered the draft was selected fifty first overall by the. New York football jets. J E S T. Well, hackenberg last you dyslexic. No. S T. Yes. Best jest? It's not right. Yeah. The Jeff story justly football team. So hack who was out of the NFL in two thousand eighteen. Playing for the Memphis express. Well, they got shut out last night by the Birmingham by the Birmingham iron twenty-six, nothing. Hack. "I mean, if you were to look at the rest of the options for them, and let's just say that your US senior approaching it as a really good school, much less. Not not per se. How USC approaches things which is always bizarre. You would say okay, there is Matt Campbell who everybody outside of USC. At least thinks is a rising star in the businesses donate terrific job at Iowa State. I don't know if I could see USC hiring him just because of how USC operates Jeff Brom who I think they should probably really consider. He probably will end up at Louisville. We don't know that for sure I mean, there's been reports saying that's the case. I'm not sure that's that's anything like a done deal. But I think he's a guy if you were USC Stu who else would you would you really consider for this job? I think you just name the Matt Cam. On Jeff bronze me or the to homerun guys that might be on that might be up for not saying either of them are desperately looking to get out of where they are by any means, and I do think Bronwyn up at Louisville. In fact, Bronwyn sprays me if he had offers from USC in Louisville. He would still go to Louisville. I mean, this is just a crucial moment for that school in that athletic department. They have to have to have to and the cycle of hiring USC retreats. They've just gotta go hire the best coach. And I don't think it's going to be somebody from the peak Carroll tree or from the oh, this guy coached or played here one hundred years ago tree. So there's a lot of good coaches out there, James Franklin's, the only one that to me. That's like well that that would be a no brainer. And I know that look there are people listening Spock asks you think he's overrated. But I think you would agree. He's a big upgrade over what they have. And he is a big personality who I think would would do well in that market when he was in Nashville Vanderbilt, he was Mr. salesman because he knew he. Had to do that to to you know, Rev up interest in Vanderbilt he's been much more reclusive. I think Penn State, especially with the media because you don't really have to do much to get a hundred thousand people to show up at that stadium. But in L A now, and you know, this well being there. I mean, the Rams are now the team there's no more. These are not the days anymore of well USC is L A's NFL team. The Rams are that team chips got going to get going at UCLA you're going to have to sell that program. So it would make a lot of sense to me one other name. Let me throw this at you. If you were USC, you already screwed this up because you you you're you didn't wait for chip Kelly. The last time probably coulda gotten him. If they waited a couple more months. It would cost them quite a bit to get out of his UCLA deal. You just watch him whip you in a way that you're really going to go there. I'm gonna throw it out. Let's lissi, and you have a lot of money. Would you consider do throwing that money out him eat? That's just throwing the ball move. My friend. I mean chip Kelly had a chance to go to the SEC into Florida and chose. He didn't want be. He did not want to be the the mayor of floor or the the mayor Florida. Thank you, governor of Florida prop popularity. He did not want to be the guy at Tennessee. Who everybody's watching eat every meal, which is what you get. He didn't wanna live in the bubble. If you're the head coach USC, you definitely have more of a bubble quality than you would if you're UCLA, but it's nowhere near like SEC level. Hey, go for it throw million and throw a gazillion dollars adamant and see if he might I mean that would be that'd be something..

"Actually, it's very viable for them in terms of buyout. And whether he can get out of his situation or exit Penn State now people will say, well, he's he's a Pennsylvania guy. Yes, he is. And he has really done a really good job in state college. Here is the reality though. And I don't know if Penn State fans probably will not like to hear this. But if you're the head coach at USC you have by far the best job the best program in the conference. It is not even close in terms of if you have all these recruits in your backyard, you have manageable academics to get them into school. A lot of these kids. Most of these kids grew up dreaming of playing for USC. You have really good facilities. You're also going into the you would be going into the Pac twelve south when it is in complete disarray. Right. If you're at Penn State. Yeah. It's got great tradition to and you've got really good facilities. You also have Ohio State and Michigan. Been in your division. Not to mention Michigan state. I mean, I think most people who are who are objective and or not diehard Penn. State fans would say that's probably the third best job in the division. Right. I would you agree with me on that? Absolutely. I mean, that's the reality of it. And you know, another thing that should be brought up is. I don't know that the Penn State fan base has ever fully embraced James Franklin. Even after winning a big ten championship. I still hear the criticism. Every time they lose a game. They're eight and three you know, that's not a bad season by any means. But I'm sure a lot of people think it should have been better. So you could stick around and continue to butt heads with Ohio State, Michigan and try to keep winning everybody over or you could go to a place that is so hungry and desperate to win that you know, you will be in its Hollywood you will be given the Royal treatment the minute you step off the plane. Yeah. And also, you know, there's been times would the perfect example to me of this was Chris Peterson a couple of years ago when USC had reached out to him. Chris Petersen's, a great coach you and I both agree on that. I think Chris Peterson. And he will admit this is not the ideal fit for USC. He is not a Hollywood guy. There's a lot of stuff about him that I think is just prefer not to Washington is a better fit for him than than USC is James Franklin. And I'm not saying James Franklin wants to have every practice in all the access that Pete Carroll had. But James Franklin's personality is a much better fit. I think for southern California. So we'll see I mean, I think for the people who think this seems crazy. I don't think they're either really diehard Penn State fans, and they see everything through that perspective. You know, or there's a few people out there who just think and maybe the right on this that it's too far outside the US cease fear of oh, well, we're going to get del. Rio or some of the people who early on this year really wanted. Hugh Jackson, just because they have an affinity for Hugh Jackson from his time at USC twenty years ago. I don't know..

"Kid who's always smiling from year to year, just a delightful kid, and what I took from that is as you're watching them run all over USC was this was the chip Kelly where no matter what call the defense is there going to be wrong because he has all these answers into it. And there's some wrinkles that. He's added, you know, from from his time away where his own line. Coach Justin Frye came from Boston College. So you see some different things they do. But they just ran it down US's throat. And you know, this isn't like a great offensive line. They have fifty seven scholarship guys. But you can see this thing starting to turn at UCLA. Whereas on the other side, it was it was just a disaster for USC. I mean, they they couldn't run the ball again. And then at the beginning of the fourth. Quarter. Mogambo song comes on and UC USC USC players like dancing in a frenzy onto the field. And there is like well what's going on here? You know, kind of thing are the are the refs going to flag this. I mean a week earlier. Remember, they flagged one of the leaders of the team Iman Marshall for his behavior towards the sideline at cow, which didn't which kinda cost them or contributed to them losing the game. And right after this kind of display USC gets a procedure penalty on coming back at the start of the fourth quarter. And they just basically were in neutral, or, you know, going backwards from that point on they got out scored thirteen nothing. They just kind of fizzled out, and I had talked to I got a call on Sunday morning from a old USC defensive player. Who is disgusted? He was like you gave up three hundred yards to an F C S back. You can't run the football. And then you show that fake swagger by trying to dance all over the place when you had no juice on the on the sideline before that. He's like, it's embarrassing. What has happened to USC? And the question here is to me this feels like a lot like the latter part of the Larry Coker era at Miami. Nice guy head coach in clay Hilton. Brought some stability certainly the first couple of years where it was needed. But after a while the message gets tuned out, and I don't know what's going to happen with USC. It just seems like they are they have lost their way. The only reason there's any suspense about this. I mean, clearly clearly he's not the coach for USC moving forward. Frankly, people weren't all that confident. And I'm even after the two great years and now he's lost any confidence. But the only so it will be a foregone conclusion, maybe they wouldn't even made the coaching change by now if not for the fact that lends swan continuing a recent US tradition of smart moves by directors gave him this extension earlier this year with a huge buyout. So I don't doubt that Lynn small. On the comments, the he is said publicly, and that you've heard behind the scenes that he really wants to keep him were true. Because it's going to be extreme extremely expensive heat damn reported about fifteen million could be more than that could be also be less than that. This is a private school. It's a private school. We don't know. Exactly. But but you gotta do it. You know, you can't there's no way they'll be able to go into the next season selling fans for crew tes assistant coaches like, you know, they gotta go hire an offense coordinator who's going to come work there knowing that the guys on such thin ice. So I guess the question is, okay. It's easy to say you need to fire the coach it's not so easy to say who you gonna bring in instead and don't give me this Jack del Rio or Jeff Fisher, any more of these USC retrieves this needs to be a legit homerun higher and the one name, and you've thrown it out there and others of throwing it out there that really intrigues me. But I think maybe people on the outside. Thank why on earth. Would he go? There is James Franklin. Well, first of all the finan-..

"He apologized for that later, but there's a lot of people that don't like James Franklin is what I came away from this with. Yeah, look, I think. That that was there before, and I think there's a lot of people who are just waiting to say a hoc-. I told you it rare for a guy to lose a game and maybe up his Heisman stock. It sounds like trace McSorley probably did that, right? I think for people who are questioning how good of a player he was or maybe they knew he was good, maybe didn't realize just how good I didn't. That was a pretty good example. It sounds like on Saturday night, I don't know. You know the column you're you're referencing. I'm sorry. Like Penn State came with an appointment. A really talented team today, make a bad play call. Obviously hindsight is twenty twenty. I mean, if if if it hits then they're going to say, well, everyone's expecting this sounds a little bit like the great Texas u. s. t. game where USC doesn't go to Reggie Bush. They go to lender white. Reggie Bush is out. There isn't a factor on the play, and it blows up in Pete Carroll's face again, similar deal. The Super Bowl p p Carol, where Malcolm Butler picks off picks off Russell Wilson at the goal. On his great. You got this great player. Why don't you feed him and in the in the crucial moment and it didn't work out. This was a particularly. I mean, you're right, and I saw definitely the comparisons to Reggie Bush not being on the field, but this wasn't fourth in one. This was four thousand five, it just I. It was just strange. There's no other way to put it like, what? Why on earth would you think an inside handoff would against chase young, all the injury mon- Joe is all those guys was gonna get you five yards. So it was odd and it was an it was off to timeouts. Right? They had a lot of time to get this right. There was a stat that came out Saturday night. That's pretty crazy than by the way. Remember if you saw the press conference afterward, a very, very heated. James Franklin said that his main point was that we were great program, but we're not in elite program yet, like Ohio State, and that's on me and I'm going to get that fixed mortgage become an elite program. Well, Penn State, you go back to the Rose Bowl in twenty. The twenty sixteen season there. Last four losses, which would be that one the state game last year, which by the way for these two teams to play three affluent thrillers in a row. Now in last year was thirty nine thirty eight. Another big Ohio State fourth quarter comeback. This year's twenty seven twenty six. So the Rosebowl they lost by on field goals by three points, they lose Ohio State last year. By one point, that's four points. They lose to Michigan state by field goal that seven points. And then this one was another one point game, so four losses by a combined eight points in which they lead in the fourth quarter in all four games. So that's one of those things where you can look at it one of two ways like, oh, they're so close. Generally speaking, you're you're supposed to split those kind of games not lose all for or in the case of the James Franklin, skeptics or critics while that's a reflection of his bad bad play calling the bad coaching in the second half..
College Football: Ohio State, Clemson and two season-defining drives
"College football continues to be wild. It continues to be wacky and it continues to deliver with every part of drama that I want. And yesterday we got it with those two months dries from Clemson in Ohio State, maybe perhaps saving their college football, playoff chances here, the first part of the season. Yeah, you know, the frustrating thing for me is we've been talking over the past several weeks, Alabama has yet to show any sign any sign of whatsoever. Right. And for a while, we were saying that Ohio State was kind of the one lone saving grace. We take a high of state can can compete, but Mahanta state verse TCU they took to the third quarter for them to finally exert their dominance. And last night that game looked a lot more like the look. A lot more like Penn State lost that when then Ohio State won at Dwayne Haskins, you know, looked very humid you took. You took that that was a Penn State choke job. I mean, look at the fourth down. There's there's a, there's a whole Twitter, anarchy right now over the play calling at the end of that game. You know what happened is fourth down and five after Ohio State takes the ball, what ninety plus yards to score after being down two touchdowns with eight minutes to go James Franklin in urban Meyer have like a time out, like who's going to like basically it was like an old school western duel, right? You call your time out and let me see what play you're running. And then James Franklin calls the time out in Franklin decides at this point that he despite having trace McSorley go for what it seemed like nine thousand yards in that game. I know it was only what four hundred in. Four hundred seventy yards of total offense. He decides to take the ball out of McSorley hand and run a quarterback draw on fourth in five.
Ohio State football has everything at stake against Penn State
"We got Penn State Ohio State this weekend, and it's a playoff game. It is, what do you expect? Well, and to your point, people always like expand the playoff and go to eighteen sixteen teams. This is a playoff game. It is. This is an elimination game. I'm going to be at another one up. These are the games and we talk about this game on this show because with that playoff predicted that tells you even if you were just an essay. Person, and that's all you watch. You don't watch any game outside of the conference. You need to keep an eye on this one because you're going to see more than likely one of these teams because listen that play predictor at Penn State where to win this game this weekend, they're the ones that are gonna take over that number four spot. I expect shootout and going into the year, honestly before I was there and personal Saturday, I'm might not have believed that Ohio State could keep up in a shootout with trace McSorley and Penn State. Dwayne Haskins is, is the truth may legit, oh, he's the truth. And there's a reason Joe boroughs at LSU. Yeah, Joe borough is at LSU because Dwayne Haskins beat him out for the Ohio State quarterback job. They engaged in quite a battle during the spring Haskins ultimately wins at I in Happy Valley all day Tuesday. I'm doing a big feature for sportscenter on Saturday on one of a Penn State's offense of linemen. And I talked spoke extensively with James Franklin who you see here, not only for that feature but about his team. He loves his team. They lost a ton offensively. This saquon Barkley to the New York Giants day. Sean Hamilton was one. Of the best and most underrated wide receivers in the country. Last year they got bowlers. So you would expect, okay, they're going to fall off authentically, oh, Appalachian state gave them all they could handle in week one that was actually a great learning experience with this group. So they have resorted all trace McSorley does is win. He is tougher than woodpecker lips man. And I think this one is going to be attract me. I agree with you, and it's going to be so fun to what I learned this from you that trace McSorley won four consecutive state championship, all he does win. All it does all that that young man does is win football games

"When you look at how bad the SEC east was nine wins, even at vandy was really sure if that was like, it wasn't like he turned his program around because they suck immediately again. But the Penn State like to me like people that don't like Harbaugh shut up. But like if you're a college coach and you've had your team flirting with being one of the four teams in the playoff in the last couple years, that means you're doing something and it's real, and I understand why people made said he's, he's overrated. But like at this point, I think you kind of have to give that up and that's from somebody that probably was anti him in the media. This is one of those situations where both things can be true. I think we struggle with that because everybody wants it to be either. It's either this or that. And in this case it can be both because I don't remember vividly doing the segments on the show talking about the end of Bill and it's and it was Haney. James Franklin deserves credit for making Vanderbilt relevant and getting them to bowl games and anchor down and doing all of the things that you gotta do social media wise to build a little bit of excitement around your program. And yes, they won games when foam is like, Owen, twelve. I think right at Vanderbilt and Tennessee was down yada, yada, like every every Vanderbilt has never beaten this team since like he, he accomplished all of those in those dyers and executive yet, right? You're like, oh, my God. Vanderbilt doesn't suck right now. But like when Missouri comes in and starts winning the division, I think that tells you how bad and you know Missouri. Go not so this, but like collectively look at how bad the east was over those years. And but you know, I'm saying that also understanding. I'm not being fair because it's also Vanderbilt. So I'm sorry, I'm eating them matter more than they have or sets, and they also benefited from winning games against that work at their at their peak levels of being whatever they've been in the SEC. So that part could be true. And then you go to Penn State and you know that game, they won that white out game against a high, oh state. If you go back and look at pistons from that night, and I think they had nine first downs and and out of block pick and they won. And at the end of it kinda shrugging how they win that game with they won that game and they have to your point one that they can been right there on the fringe of the playoffs and have done incredibly well recruiting, which doesn't surprise anybody because you know James dynamic die and. And connects with people. So I think I think the coaches that say that they don't what's? What's the, what's the word that you always hear people butter, you know, privately about about him, that's that's supposed to be negative. They'll say, like salesman, right? Yeah, cars salesman implementing. The but any. Right. And it has a bad. Do you get? No, Carfax. But you can't you say that about him? The people that would say that are like, oh, like an IRO like big think it's like some magic show or they don't? Well, probably people he's beating on the on the trail to get players and then probably people he's beating on the field on Saturdays. It's it's gotten to, you know, to to the playoff and and just on other things I'm rambling thinking about James Franken, go back and look. They were trailing, Minnesota, going home in the ring, and people wanted gone and they came back and won and overtime. They were underdogs at home against Maryland, the following week, and they do them, and then they didn't lose again and went to the big, you know, we're going there and just beat the turps. Now it was. It was a home game. They were at home. You just said, oh my God. Yeah, we were home home underdogs this seasons ago. I'm not making it up, so it just speaks no one's gonna remember. So don't worry, of course not, but other than other than me, but what he's managed to do is to a real quick. One eighty with perception do do a really good job on cruising trail when a big ten be right there on the fringe of the play up, go to the Rose Bowl win, be walkington, whatever that bulls call now and she's,.

"The young man especial here are some numbers no school has produced more i ron running backs than penn state and no player in penn state history brush for more touchdowns than saquon barkley is also the school's all time leader in all purpose yards along side his head coach from penn saint james franklin is our great pleasure to welcome saquon barkley who tonight will hear his name somewhere very early in the nfl draft and thank you to both of you in a moment we'll have saquon explained why this will only be the second most significant thing that happens to him this week but let's start just with this notion and coach i'd love you to chime in as well this idea that a running back shouldn't go as high as a quarterback or other players because of the position why do you think it would be a mistake for teams to pass over saquon well i think the biggest thing is is what you're trying to do i guess in all businesses you trying to reduce risk and i get the history of it but when you when you talk about saquon specifically saquon and your and you talk about all the positives and all the action beauts that he has that you look for at that position body type speed strength power vision l bility to catch the ball out of the backfield the way the game is evolved so much he has all those but i think probably the more powerful thing is on all these prospects they're also looking for negatives they're looking for issues or looking for red flags and from everything i've seen and heard and what i've experienced myself there really isn't any so when you're able to get a player that i think has a chance to really change the game and really be able to make a huge impact on the nfl very quickly it's hard to pass on that.

"To remarkable young miss the barclay secretary of state there you go in and james franklin was talking about it at ghotra penn state he said eight the body on this kid i mean you watch him run the football in there it's almost inconceivable eddie tried to get your mind around the he's two hundred thirty pounds i mean he is a big back and james franklin was saying you look at you you look at his body with the pads off in it's just wow and and bill you know i went down i was at the combine that you know after the 1985 year down in in the superdome in new orleans and they parade everybody around in their scabbies and he got to pay you gotta pass the eye test i want the ice as but i guarantee you say kwan barkley he's gonna zabibah's ena out he look the part and you know james franklin when he what he's evaluating sake one bark is not just the way it carries the ball not the way returns kicks in specialty teams and i mean he's a vicious blocker he's mentally on top of everything great teammate leader that we we talked about his past catching ability which is is just ridiculous coming out of the backfield and i think it's gonna be real exciting to see you know who he plays for the nfl level and really fun to watch him on sunday well i pushed out a ten that status triggers exert their twenty nine moving righttoleft applicable touchdowns can't ask when it out in the left lane taken at the stevens who jumps the initial tackle six it up field through the rental market with thirty one yard want him to thirty two that's a gain of about three out of way again tommy stevens the backup quarterback it they're using have day at all shapes and forms of his football game wide receiver running back uh by play will quarterback but not the way mcsorley go on and on got three seconded set a running back as sanders they action fake now the new side of the field land sick he makes the cat scott packed by kiljo mcintosh but he was able to hold out boy that was a great catch and that gets the first down after.

"In a different situation from coach trestle all right and we went through an interim coach we have a talented roster but then urban meyer came available we hired or ramar penn state we know what they went through what does it mean to be able to get someone after bill o'brien like james franklin and how he's change that program it's it's unbelievable how far they've communist short time if you look what james franklin has done i think if you're a head coach and candidate obviously the penn state job is one of the most coveted gigs in college football but to think what you're up against coming through everything and with not only are you trying to replace joe paternal but all of what happened the same dusky situation and you're going to bring this team together in all of a sudden there on the national stage was ranked two in the country might have the highest been trophy winner in your back field he's just he's brought him this far said in such a short time is is really really amazing and now you will continue to get those four and fivestar recruits that will want to go to penn state what the stakes in this game what happens to the to the winner at lee where does the winner go from here let's say that playoffs well if if you're penn state it it looks real really good wives they put them back in the picture i think that's why if you look at there's more pressure from for a highest having one loss they lose state they can they make the play was definitely more pressure on the ohio state team because pence they can still find a way to have an argument to get into the college football players if they do lose this game so technically ohio state has the pressure.
