"Finally match. It was supposed to be really good by all that good anymore. And that's gonna penn state against ohio. State gimme ohio state. It's just obvious right now. Houses won the top teams in the country ever since seizures style was out for the game with his injury. He's come back and been nothing. But i mean you can't rely spectacular. He's been very good. Has won the top defense in the country as well ever since i lost oregon and this happens a lot one that loss happens. They figured out really quick. I they just do. That's what it comes down to comes onto coaching. Hey what would you wrong looking to fix. It began to change the personnel. Put a new. You have opened the competition up. And who's the best player not just go by seniority or rank. Whatever it is you know what. I'm trying to say. Clearly oh house. They can things out quickly. Penn state is coming up and embarrassing loss to illinois. I don't expect to go into ohio state and even compete. I think this is actually going to be over by at least a third quarter. I just think penn state is not that good football team. James franklin is i think his mindset says also elsewhere like he is a hot candidate to go to usc. I think that'd be a great fit for him. I really do. Us's atop program by gimme. Oh how i want to say. Steam robot base iffy by beat penn state. Pretty bad like ohio say is favored by what eighteen and a half points. I the expect. More than that penn stater does not show up. i put them third quarter realize. Yeah this game is over. Ohio state is dominated his game. No way penn state can come back. I expect that now. My teams on upset alert. Now again when i do is upset alerts. I'm doing them based on a team being ranked versus. Tina's not right. I was two and three last week. Let's take three more again. I'm picking to since ni- 'cause no inada. Wisconsin is going to be my opinion. I think iwa..

"Know you're talk. Yeah i wonder what that gets. You give me a second. Go on per seat. I'll be listening. But i wonder indiana at maryland two teams that are struggling. The turps of ton of injuries Five and a half point favorites. I think i'm probably the hoosier. Just a wreck. Right now to the. I like the hoosier skin the points. Yeah they worry me because they've been really really bad and what happened there but it's just here's my advice for that one time deal. Don't gamble gamble got one. There's no there's no tell. Issue compelled to gamble on an. Here's another game i would say. Don't gamble on rutgers One and a half point favorites opened up his peckham at illinois. Blind eye coming off at the biggest win of the deal. The era in the nine over time high scoring twenty two eighteen game. This is going to seem very aver. But i'll take rutgers may to it's tougher you is online i fan. I don't like the next line either. Minnesota laying seven and a half north western and northwestern cats cats. I don't trust either. One of them. And i ate the hook i ate that was minus six and a half. Then maybe give me northwestern at home. I'll hold my nose and i'll take northwestern in dover do for for stinger aren't they do. I would sir speaking of stinkers this line stinks to high heaven purdue and nebraska nebraska now up to seven and a half point favorites. They were openness. Settle blue anybody out. But they don't win close games. I like nebraska and i would put him in a moneyline parlay but i don't know if i liked them enough. Lay the with that seven. What do you think might go on. Purdue just take to sell. And a half. I don't know the book does prejudice suck everywhere but when they face iowa is that maybe the the real thing here Yes i think they just have. Iowa's number certain teams figure it out in get it and that's one of them. Did you figure remembers there. Keep growing k. penn state at ohio state ohio state. Who's really clicking. But they haven't beat anybody recently. They've beaten bad teams. Poll like a drum like akron in indiana in Some other teams. But they're playing penn state penn state's kind of a hot mess right now. James franklin doesn't know who is playing. Did you hear that. He thought he was playing illinois again. He thought he was going to go to the big house. This weekend really needs the high. He wants out of there anyway. Ohio state is an eighteen and a half point favorite in columbus. This is i mean what worries me is. It doesn't make sense to to to go the opposite way but ohio state and you've been saying this all credit where credit's due. You've been saying this last weeks. I think while state lay the points. I think roland on a different level. I'm and is is sean clifford good. He's not good when he can't run. And that's what happened. Last week he could not condemning. The basically was to beat up that they just told me. You jangle go wrong and hurt. What did he hurt now. I had heard that it was ribs but somebody else told me might have been a hip but i thought it was ribs that maybe he.

"Coaching job at usc. So why now. So the urban meyer thing doesn't make sense the thing that makes sense. It probably aired amri or james franklin. They might be the two front runners. Because they're in positions. Where eric nfl but while he wanted leave the chiefs and loudly wanna leave. Patrick mahomes and why would he want to leave that great situation. James franklin might be the front runner. I don't know if james franklin likes penn state over. usc. But usc everybody likes living in la. Everybody would love that. And you know what. James franklin wouldn't have the pressure that he has penn state at usc. You know why. 'cause usc is not a college football town. Southern california is not a college football town. Because it's a dodger town. It's at laker town. It's a ram town but it's there's so many other sports that most people focus on that he could just sit back relax and he wouldn't have that pressure that he would have if he went to happy. Valley were in happy valley right now where he went to gainesville or if you went to oklahoma or if he went to texas sam and if he had this pressure of basically. You're the only thing in town. You're the big ticket. If you lose if you don't if you don't succeed you're going to be a bust. He doesn't have that pressure. And that's why this job is so great. Because you're gonna have the pressure but if you can get top recruits to come to your school. Like usc cam like usc has done. In the past you can be dominant powerhouse. And that could lead back to the prominence of usc. It i'm just saying it's a great job. And i think a lot of people who say you know what. I'm not going to take the usc job just like urban. Meyer has but in the back of their mind in the back of their mind all those cultures and thinking that might be a great job. If it doesn't work out here. I might be on the next train to southern california. But i'm just saying i'm saying so. We got james. Franklin plus four fifty urban meyer plus five hundred and we got eric b enemy at plus three thousand a few of the names. I would think that would be able and be interested in this job. It's going to be interesting to see how. Usc develops and how you go about getting their new head coach. But just look out for those three names especially james franklin and eric for the next head coaching job of us. That that's just my opinion on it. It's gonna be interesting to see. Maybe it could be played out way differently. But that's who. I see who might be the next head coach. The next great prominent head coach at usc at that great distinguished program. All right. so we've been talking about this a lot coming up next. Friday football picks the most anticipated segment of the gs into football podcast. And we got goodies for you coming up next. "Sound delightful and everything at auburn which we've already covered in excruciating detail on the other hand james franklin auditioning for the job. Can i ask a completely a question. Only tangentially related to football. That sounds really out of character on this show. Are any of you familiar with the tailgating and server this includes you the tailgating game known as stump no no learned about it in discord this week right this is zone stump s. t. u. mp no. I'm gonna try to explain it. Best i can. Is this like stump in the kronenbourg crash since or know. Why are you looking at me like that. That is i think that is the buffalo bills tailgate. So this this is how it is was explained to me by somebody else. You put a nail or multiple nails partway into a stump. And you try to hammer them in by flipping a hammer in the air catching it by the handle and swinging all in one motion and this is also a drinking game in some way shape tree. That's what i think when. I'm throwing hammers. A lumber field is my first quarter. I am told that. Penn state penn state fans bring their own stumps and look to play this game. Honey shift the cooler. Over the fact i got a load up. The best part is i asked some other people about this and the only person i knew who who said that they had heard of this. Was seth rosenthal who went to skidmore and was just like yeah. We were just bored in the woods a lot. So i like auburn in town bringing that yellow lumber putting putting the high quality pennsylvania's truly our greatest state. Come.

"Partner. I know those guys could take some shots. But the reason I brought up Steve Smith is because they were so good in 1980. Maybe it's more of a question for stand because you kind of came right after that, But you played with guys on that 81 team. They were. They look like they're without question playing for a national championship, and they kind of crapped the bed on in their opener. I don't know why they opened on the road in a big 10. Game it Wisconsin. But they did. And he had a really rough time. And you know was it was really on that kid shoulders Or was there other things going on? And again? This one question for staying because you worked there. Right, But there are other things but stand. I mean, but Steve Smith was young and I'm sure knowing that coaching staff because I would know that go just that they didn't want to put a lot on him. They didn't want to infuse the whole often on him. So they held things back. No knowing coach him back like that was the way itwas I'll tell you this year. I agree with you on James Franklin and big moments he has frozen up when it comes to play calling. I think about that one point loss that he had at home to Ohio State. That was ridiculous. But the part about you know if If James Franklin if Jim Harbaugh had done what James Franklin is not actually beat Ohio State and when the big 10 East will be talking about Harbaugh, you know it's a deity and you know that stuff. That's the one part Y pause a little bit on Franklin and I'll cut him too much, because, yeah, Game day and they just came in and armor and smack Michigan upside the head, even though they hadn't won a game this year, so I'm having a hard time, you know, going after him too hard. Well, I'm telling you, I'm looking. I'm finally looking. I'm just I'm just thinking that this is here that we finally break through. We got new blood in there that we can go on the road and beat somebody Tell you this, I'll tell you this right now bringing up Steve Smith. You talk about a door, Fred guy that I would love to see him run a spread offense today, he because that kid had some wheels. Remember? They said that he had Jamie, you would know. Did he really have 45 speed? But I remember that we say he was 45. Yes. Yeah. Could you imagine having him today? That would be because he had my sorrow to do? You would have been really nice fit for the for the present day offices and spread offense today, many to throw that ball control now. I'm not back by the time he got out of there, He really woz. I just feel bad. You know that. You know, In his first year, there was somebody expectations for that team and you know they had a rough year, obviously considered all considering what their expectations were, but You know, but hey, guys, I'm saying 10 wins this year. That's what I'm telling you. 10 wins. Glad I'm telling you Are words. All right. Hey, If Steve Smith was playing nowadays you would transfer because Harvey, I wouldn't play him. Oh, I'm sorry. That's just a joke. You know, Jim's gonna get it right. He's the quarterback coach now. He's gonna figure out what's one of these guys, and he's gonna have a bounce back season like Brian Kelly and Mark Antonio and Things. They're gonna be restored a little bit here. That's the whole right. So it I'm point I'm gonna get out. Last Castle of Kool Aid is what I'm saying, right? Yeah. I just got to get on board with it. You know, at some point you either, you know? Are you there in her out? Come on. You're in. You're in. Basically here that I don't want to hear that crack. You just made the list. Exactly. Well, hopefully it starts with recruiting day and we get that type of from Michigan State. We steal him away. That zoning right there. Yeah. Hey, that's where Shawn No, it is right now doing what he's supposed to be doing. You want to start turning in a shares like I put myself in that category right now. Flipping Benny would be a nice start getting this kid Dixon is in a transfer portal on and haven't Bellamy deliver him? Yeah, that's how I'm gonna start feeling better. Any word on the scheme that they're actually going to run on defense and any clue at all. Yeah, I think they're gonna run a 34. Yeah, but we haven't heard from the just but yeah, This is what they're used to. I think these these two coaches, they they've been running Only 34 their whole career so far, so I don't know why they would change. We got to put some serious weight on Mr Hinton. Then do we not Yeah. Or find somebody like I know you. You said they're hard to find in the portal. But I think they're hard to find in general anywhere, right? I mean, you think about you having to gabs era technique kind of guy. I don't think you're let him walk off campus. Sorry. So we gotta develop somebody through strength and conditioning as the way I'm looking at. I don't think that guy's out there if he's out there great. But we're gonna have to develop somebody. That's just my feeling. I think you're right. Okay, Well, thanks for the phone call to talk to you tomorrow. 734 99 10 50. Let's go to Mustafa. What's up More stuff for Doing good. How are you? I'm doing well now. Yeah. Yeah, It's good to hear from you. You and Jamie were going at it last last time. Everybody could have disagreements and that's fine. Look, I I'm just trying to tell everyone Every player is not going to be loved four years you fall in love with that player as he improves or Are we not or he doesn't improve and you just don't like him and I get it. But you gotta give me play. You can absolutely say I don't want to see this player ever again because Yes, what you may you may be skipping the great year he's having or the next great leap year or something like that. As I said, Brian, Greasy is a perfect example. That 97 season..

"So from that front crystal contact. Yeah. How about a vote of confidence for your guy that he's going to be the coach going forward Right now. In Kirk's column, there's one pair entire paragraph he deserves better. Tom Herman deserves better says that Texas has treated Herman shabbily. Is Tom Herman Make What is it $6 million dollars $60 million a year. This is his fourth year, collecting 5 to $6 million Every year. He loses two games that we have no business losing. Would not, I would I do not think that he deserves to be treated better. Because of you. Why? Because he has to have an uncomfortable press conference every couple of weeks. This is part of this part of the territory is part of the territory, but but I think Longhorn nation needs to know what decision Krystal contact is gonna make sense. Urban Meyer is out of the mixed Are you going to go ahead and fire him and pay and pay him off to the tune of $15 Million in the assistants who got three year guaranteed contract last year to the tune of 25 men? And what is your plan? What was your plan? So do you read anything into that? The fact that he has not Krystal content, and I guess I was not aware of his No commenting during the season policy, but the fact that he has not offered an endorsement despite the fact that Urban Meyer's apparently out You think that's more likely that he is still leaning towards going with a new guy? Because I think now they did the numbers that you just laid out there. It just makes sense to keep Tom Herman if you don't have a guaranteed guy, if you don't have a guaranteed guy who's gonna be a big splash because you know Kurt mints in some names today, But they weren't big splash. So James Franklin has a $38 million buyout. I don't know how this works. Does Texas have to pay 38 million? Surely not right? Yes, they would to get James Franklin, Texas would pay them. Let's not even talk about it. No, because you got to pay 25 million to get rid of Tom Herman and then $38 million to Penn State University and a tree to get James Franklin got James Franklin seven years ago. I could've got James Franklin seven years ago when Penn State Harden and, uh, they didn't do it because they had a pea brain running the athletic department within Steve Patterson, who didn't know anything about football. Which we all know he didn't know a damn thing about football. Yeah, And I did shouldn't be so harsh Pea brain. I'll say he's ill informed about football. He's a decent businessman. You know, Eddie brought beer into the deeper here will forever be in your debt s C. Patterson. You're a good guy there, But, Yeah, I mean, I mean, unless A what? I would consider the pipe dream situation like a Kyle Shanahan. You know, an NFL coach, Something like that were to become available high level and I just don't think that I just don't think anybody Eyes is a slam dunk better choice than having Tom Herman again next year, and I don't even necessarily mean that just because of the money in the cove. It's situation. All of that, like I literally would. Pretty much I know we're all matted Tom Herman, But I'd rather have Tom Herman than Brian Harston or Luke Fickell. I would to others. As you know, there's only one guy I want more than Is Sonny docks, personal friend, but I was just trying to get a sideline passes. I'm gonna.

Uh, they're leading Rutgers tend to nothing. Does James Franklin? What's this? The story there? Is. Franklin still will be a with Penn State next year. Seems like it seems like the two marquee programs are going to move off. Their coaches will be Michigan, Texas. Um, I wonder if with James Franklin especially if they show a little something a little fight down the stretch, That's enough the to make sure he's safe there. Pen stain. Yeah, I think he's I think he's safe there. You know, there was the there was the investigation going on about him and a player and a cover up going on there, and that seemed to kind of beat. Gone by the 24 hour news cycle with all the you know, with Cove it and all that kind of stuff, But I think that he I think he'll be fine there as far as keeping his job. I know we're talking college football here on the show. Can I pass along the Bears Injury report that was just released? Yes. Just just a couple of notes. This breaking news, not breaking news, something. Keep your eye on. Key makes questionable. Khalil Mack questionable. Own Robinson questionable for tomorrow's game against the lines. Question like you didn't want to play it are questionable on the injury report. Donald Moody, questionable as well. On the injury report and for the Lions Matthew Stafford, listed as questionable for tomorrow's game. Receivers were gonna play right? No question. Well, why? What's got was from the movie. Mooney was a knee. Which I believe happened yesterday, right? Yeah. And then let's see Alan Robson knee as well. How many of those receivers get on Twitter and said, Hey, man, you all need to come to Washington like you get to become a Seattle like, Hey, you want to go? You guys saw that right this week. Happy fingers on Twitter is that I've been. I've been very confident about a few things this season. I'm very confident Alabama today. I'm very confident and Alan Robson will not be a bear next year. "I'll always love having fun play with my guys here play a little true false. And so I originally had a question for you here. Which was that a true or false that Ohio State is playing its toughest to game stretch of this even season between today and next week when they play Maryland. And Ohio and Indiana. But that obviously is now fall Steve Clark because they are playing today against Maryland. But would that have been their toughest to game stretch of the season based on what we've seen to this point? Yeah. Yeah. Say false because I think Penn State's on a completely different trail and not to really discount what Maryland is done. But I've seen Maryland played this game of destroying average teams. And then playing against a fairly decent team and get their socks beaten off of him. Uh, I think Ohio State right now feels like they have two games to play in their season and that's I you And Michigan and Michigan just because they just want to play Michigan. But other than that, it's just e. The toughest challenge for Ohio State right now is Kobe. Like their biggest opponent off the field right now, for the next five or six week is not to get into it. Oh, UNEP id Emmick. Imagine if they played Maryland is scheduled and a bunch of players came down with covert from Ohio State right before the I You game. Where they have canceled that game against Are you or were. They have tried to play it anyway with just healthy players and then wound up getting upset? Because I you ended up being somewhat decent. This is something that all have said don't have to worry about because Maryland came clean. What is the true false IRA? Well, it was just a conversation about that. This would this have been into the toughest to game stretch of the season for Ohio State before this Maryland game obviously got canceled today as actually play Indiana. So how do you feel about the true true false IRA feels better about his Terps. Then what would be the year? Absolutely. You did headed into the season. Oh, there's no question about it. There's a couple of teams and I think we can. Obviously we talk about our team and we spent a lot of time talking about it. But there's a couple of teams that you would very much the opposite opinions. I think of what you thought your season was gonna be. And one of them is on the positive side for Maryland fans. They're definitely they found their quarterback, and they're much more positive about their team that they were, even after week one. They got deep pants and weak one. But you looking what we've learned is you don't take a lot of the week one. You have to go forward from there. But the other one is the flip side, and we've talked about Penn State, but this that came up today. I just want to bring it up to you guys. Have you seen it yet? But Penn State they were seven in the preseason AP Poll there the fourth team to start 014 after being ranked in the top 10 of the preseason, a people and the first since 1984 Pittsburgh. It's under that they've lost their first four games of a season for just the second time in school history after losing to Nebraska today, that is a remarkable set. We're going to see a lot of these type of stats like you know. Michigan could be one and three since the first time since the 1967 or something like that, all of this gets thrown out the window in my book because you're not playing a nonconference schedule in which you're beating a lot of teams up, so only won one game where the you know been winless. So far. It's no bet you know. A Penn State team has never been winless through the month of November since 1911 or something like WeII. I didn't play until late October, either. So, ah lot of these statistics. I just throw it out because it is weird, weird season. But what is true, though, is what I was saying an hour ago. You have a pen state team that thought they were going to potentially win the Big 10 championship. Answer two games. It was taken out from under them, and they have responded that way. By the way, they've lost to Maryland and that they way they've lost in Nebraska. They're not interested. They're not interested in playing. Here's what I wonder. I wonder how much of a Mulligan Penn State fans air Are willing to get. You know, I never have really gotten a real good feel for how they feel about James Franklin over there. Steve. I don't know, And I don't know if you guys have. I don't know me. He's beating Ohio State once they've You know they have accomplished in things there. He's had some good recruiting classes, but I've never really gotten You know, kind of a feel for if they really like him. If they really feel feel like he's their guy is this is this Owen for start something they're gonna look at it as an opportunity to I'd be like, Okay? Yeah. Let's get rid of that guy where they just waiting for the chance to do you really like James Franklin over there? So it's a lot the same way it is here, Sam. You've got a certain segment of the population that thanks, James Franklin is great, and he's going to lead them and you got another segment of the population that with each loss goes back. It says you know that one year where they blocked a kick. I got lucky and beat Ohio State James Frank. One has written that for five years now. And that's the way they feel. They feel like it was one lucky game. And, you know, let's tell you the truth. Let's tell the truth. The year after that Penn State nearly beat Ohio State in Columbus, but it's true. Franklin's got the one win. And he has written that all the way to where he is today, and there's a lot of people that, says Ben. When is he going to be looked at for how he is coaching today or the previous year, So there's a certain certain segment of Penn State fandom, and it's certainly feeling that way real quick. We made the PICS earlier in the show on the night game. Injury. Update. George Karl office. It has an ankle injury is available if necessary. Rhonda more with his undisclosed injury is out. I am not cheering injury. I'm cheering my pick, not injury, and we make that clear cause you know, I love George. I think George is a ball player. But I'm here in my pit Northwestern. All right? Yeah, When? Today I'll take one game late next week. That's all right. I'm sure you will. I'm sure you will save all right. True or false. Sam Web. I don't think I've ever been to say this about a team in this stage of the season in November, but Wisconsin is the best one win team in America. Yeah, e gotta go. It's true. I don't know who or what is the other one with even America? I don't know a lot of one win teams. There's no other one of the old team in America. E don't know any other one and no teams out there. But I think so. They were very impressive in week one. You know, I think that their fans not that they cheer injury, but I think that they were actually excited. About the opportunity to see merged with cone out. I think on and he looked like Wow is much as we were talking about Joe Milton. After week one. Those people were like, Oh, my God. He he's the next coming. This is he has arrived. This is the highest rate quart quarterback. In Wisconsin history..

And when I see PS you and you're in your tag, I know that exactly what you're doing. You're a homer, and that's okay. You that It's okay to be a homer. Just admit that you're homer. You're out of your mind. Because I'm going to tell you there have been a year in the last 20 years where anybody could have told you what you have to do to win a national title, unlike nowadays in the college football playoff era, In consecutive weeks. You have to be able to beat if you were a Penn State because you would already have to have gotten by Ohio State. You would have to have beaten a team, the caliber of Clemson and Alabama and the next like in two consecutive weeks. Spoiler alert. You're not doing that. You're not doing it. 855 to 1 to four. CBS. If you want to join us on the show 855 to 1 to four CBS and No, I wasn't mocking Cincinnati. I would have Cincinnati right there in the mix. I really would. I really would. And if these teams start tripping up I've already said, too. You Clemson with one loss. He's not in any way going to affect me. If Clemson loses to note your name next week. It's not going to affect me. Because those two will have a rematch, Gaming and Trevor Laurence will be there for that one. So it's not going. That's not going to change. My thinking. If anybody's opinion of Clemson football has changed was wow. They look really mediocre. Without Trevor Laurence know they found a way to win. They took care of business. They found a way to survive and if they can survive next week Then I mean, just it's over. It's over. They're in the culture football playoff. Martin Simmons College football writer, CBS Sports H Q. He will join us coming up in the next hour around 20 minutes past the hour. We'll have a chance to catch up with him and see what the see what the deal is in his mind. I am a big believer that the college football season is missing some juice. I think it's just been the late starts the it's missing some sort of juice. But We're not going to complain, right? I'm not complaining. Major league Baseball begins today. Begins. Free agency at 501. And Anthony Piano, has a new owner for his favorite baseball team. There you go. "Ranking teams? Based on their name brands. Because I've got to tell you the name brand of Penn State football. Is rancid upon the shelf. And for those of you who continually tried to correct me about James Franklin. Keep continuing. Keep at it. Keep trying to figure it out. You'll finally come around at some point. You will come around at some point I long what it's gonna be. I'm not sure when it's going to be But you'll come around at some point. I've already figured it out. I'm trying to save you. I already figured it out. You, on the other hand, just can't seem to figure it out. Every year, the James Franklin Kool Aid We got one of the best coaches in the country. James Franklin is not the best coaches in the country. Yep. Keep telling yourself that. You keep telling yourself that How many times do you have to be fooled? How many times do you have to just like someone is going to play you for the full And you're going to keep lapping it up. You keep believing it and you're gonna keep thinking We're Penn State. It's going to come back. Where? Where Penn State were prominent program. No, you're not. Not anymore. No, you're not. You're not You're not there. Used to be. Back in the day when you were well. Let's just say, running a far different Moralistic program. You were there. You haven't been there in forever. Stop talking about history. Not talking to me about what you were. Talk to me about what you are..

"But the why did not give them any satisfaction they contented themselves with admonishing me and dismiss me considering me perhaps as an apprentice who was bound to keep his masters secrets. During my brothers confinement, which I resented a good deal notwithstanding our private differences, I had the management of the paper and I made it to give our rulers. Some rubs in it which my brother took very kindly while others began to consider me in an unfavourable light as a young genius that had a turn for libelling and satire my brothers discharge was accompanied with an of the house a very odd one that James Franklin should no longer printed the paper called the new. England current. There was a consultation held in our printing house among his friends what he should do in this case. Some proposed to obey the order by changing the name of the paper. But my brothers seeing inconveniences in that it was finally concluded on as a better way to let it be printed for the future under the name of Benjamin Franklin and to avoid the center of the Assembly that might fall on him as still printing it by his apprentice. The contrivance was that my olden denture. Should be returned to me with a full discharge on the back of it to be shown on occasion but to secure to him the benefit of my service, I was to sign new in dentures for the remainder of the term which were to be kept private a very flimsy scheme. It was however, it was immediately executed and the paper went on accordingly under my name for several months. At length a fresh difference arising between my brother and me I took upon me to assert my freedom presuming that he would not venture to produce the new in dentures. It was not fair in me to take this advantage and this I therefore reckon one of the first era of my life. But the unfairness of it weighed little with me when under the impressions of resentment for the below his passion too often urged him to bestow upon me though he was not otherwise and ill-natured man. Perhaps. I was too saucy and provoking..

"Are long term effects. Centered on the long term effects of covert 19 One of the aides. Out of power five school, told Dennis Dodd of CBS. Why do we think that we can protect all these fans and players? Any better than one of the largest monopolies in the world, and he's referring to the NFL. How many of 130 FBs teams will even be around when we come out of this. The ugly truth of carrying that much debt. May prove to be too much for these teams. During the pandemic. Georgia bragged about having $100 million in reserves, but they are an outlier. At the bottom end of the sport. Some programs essentially play football. So that they can continue playing football. It's the budget that feeds the budget. Notre Dame A D Jack Swarbrick said. We're going to lose institutions were going to have a number of member institutions who won't be evolved in college education 3 to 4 years. The crisis has further revealed how athletic departments live paycheck to paycheck. The Iowa State A D. Said his athletic department would have $41 million. Of Bill's in unfunded expenses. Meaning that the money they're not getting from football will leave them. With a bill of $41 million. James Franklin makes $7 million at Penn State. That's 7% of the universities. Annual athletic budget. If the school president got 7% of Penn State's tuition money. He'd been making $119 million a year. In actuality, he makes one million. So the school president makes one million. James Franklin makes seven million to coach Penn State football. Where's it all come from? Obviously, you know where it comes from. But if it isn't being funded, if if, if No TV money is coming in. Then. How do you continue these programs and if they don't play in the spring, they'll go 21 months without playing. From December off 19. Till August or September of 21. And everyone else is also saying Across the board. That college football and basketball will almost certainly be more professionalized. Fans will still packed stadiums even when the next Trevor Laurence Is making a $1,000,000 from his name, image and likeness just from his social media accounts. Right? And the Pac 12 had their player demands. We are united relating to black lives matter. And there's a player's bill of rights being developed in Washington, D. C. That would dramatically expand name, image and likeness opportunities. So look, It's a long story. You should read it, But let's just talk about what the bottom lines are here. This whole system We knew we knew. Waas a sham when it came to who was making the money and who was making the sacrifice the players were selling. The eyeballs that we're watching on television and Going to the stadiums and tailgating. It was about the players. But the Beneficiaries of their play or administrators. We're all behind the scenes people at these universities and the other kids going to that school because they were taking that money, and they were using it to fund their other sports. As well. So that the soccer program in the field hockey and the cross country on the track and field and The women's volleyball and whatever else is being played. Would all have funding for their travel. And their equipment and their coaches and their trainers, and everything that is required to put a program on was funded through football. So I still don't think that in a general sense The public really has any idea Ofjust how wide reaching The effects of Not playing. Ah! Revenue generating sports are going to reach how far those tentacles they're going to reach. How many Um People that you would not think of are going to be affected. And when you Multiply that by the number of as we said 130 FBS football programs. That's high Division one programs. You know about half of those in the power five. Conferences, Thie a cc that Sec. The Pac 12 The Big 12 and the Big 10. You. You get a sense of just how Powerful this all is And then when you realized what was happening With the players banding together and remember now It's not as hard anymore for players to band together. Social media allows us to plan and do things Simultaneously and quickly and for a wave to become A tsunami. And players are now Connected through texting through social media. So quickly. That they can decide that for a Saturday Blackout a moratorium None of us are playing today. I mean that that's what makes this inevitable, okay? Players are going to be represented because they are the product. They are the product. They are the product. They are the hamburgers at McDonald's. McDonald's could do everything else they want. But if they don't have food, they don't have a business. They can have the arches and the signs and the employees and the uniforms. On the drive up windows. And the Friars and the grill on it and have everything but if they don't have the food, they don't have a product. Ah, ah product or a business. And these players are the food. And they know they're the food. And if you don't treat them well. And they're able to organize into. Ah Boycott situation..

"Here. The Jim Harbaugh's in the James Franklin's and the On the other coaches who have spoken up about this and said, Look, we could we could do this. We can play. We can play safely and those players that I mentioned that. Are there some That I will predict right now will never again pull out. Ah Michigan football helmet. And Ah, they weren't ready for that. Jon. You know, you just mentioned safety there, and we know we heard that today from the commissioner you just talked about when he mentioned the health of rest, and I'm sure you've looked at A number of these different spring models, and I've looked at a couple of myself and I don't see anywhere. They're talking about a a spring season. You can't exactly play a full season and then expect these guys to come back in 2021. Play a full season, so the model if safety and health risks are at the top, which the Big 10 emphasized today. I can't see them playing any more than two or three scrimmages. Or maybe they could play for But you're just playing the games. You're not playing for any kind of championship in four games. Maybe an exhibition game or, like I said a scrimmage. So this part have you looked at any of those models? Do you agree with that? Or do you think that there might be ableto find away? With with safety and health risk and looking at 2021 are they thinking about and one of the models like pushing 2021 back to October? Something to give him more breathing room? Or they could play 1/2 dozen games? What have you looked at there? Well, I agree completely with what you're saying. Dennis, And maybe I maybe more dubious about any kind of spring season than that, Even what you're citing and that these models, you know, they say they'll look at it. Ah, behind the scenes. I think that the Big 10 is very dubious about doing it. And I think they're very dubious about doing it for good reason. You know as well as I do you get these guys that go through a full football season in the fall. What we what we get reports about From the time that the season is over until spring practice begins. Okay, someone, so it's not gonna be there for spring ball. He's getting shoulder cleaned up, so and so is not going to be there for spring ball. He's got a knee. There's so much wear and tear through the course of that three month season, and then it really extends. I mean, you got the practice is leading up to the ball game. You're going into January and then all of a sudden you're goingto. Turn around and, ah, you know, have spring ball. Now you're talking about some sort of season in the spring and then just a handful of months later, even in the best scenario You're talking about, Okay? We're gonna have another season. I just don't I I do not Expect there to be two football seasons of any kind of legitimacy within the same calendar year and Ah folks are gonna want to hear that. And I think the big 10 will make a ah ah honest effort to look at it and make ah, a wise decision, but I think the wise decision If you've given up this fall is not to go ahead and play next spring. You're listening The job board from the wolverine W T K M 10. 50 on the M Zone, John, I guess my next question is, is that you know Some of these players. I mean, look, if you're looking if you're looking at new coaches melt Mel Tucker down. I mean, up up the road. I mean, he gets a year reprieve. I mean, really, he doesn't He doesn't have to face is it? And you look at some of these. All of the new coach is ever coming in. I look, I look at it as an opportunity. Michigan. I mean, they may get a spring ball. I don't think they're going to play a season in the spring. For all the reasons you said, because next years got to be a gangbuster next next season's gotta be a real gangbuster. But I mean that being said you're going to need some of these players. And I mean, maybe we could figure out a quarterback position. I mean, by that time You can do some things in the meantime, and then on top of that. If the big 12? No, I didn't not the big 12. The SEC and the SEC do try toe have a season and if they're not successful The Big 10. Looks like they're smart for what they did. But if they get a season through Then the victim goes down or not. Yes. No. Yeah, There's no doubt about that. And, you know a cz faras what you're saying about the way people are reacting to this news that, you know. Ah, you know, unofficially, Mel Tucker is probably having a House party tonight. It may be a well mask. Socially distance House party. But you know, the guy has got to be Ah, feeling like he got a reprieve. You know, 10 game Big 10 schedule that program in the state. It's in right now and with a new coach and trying to put in a new system, they have been very, very fortunate to win five football games. Out of those 10. So yeah, they get a reprieve. Certainly a program like Michigan like Penn State like Ohio State. Absolutely wanted to have fall football. You know, the one thing that you know, we see people talking about on our boards is well, you know, Mr Fields down. Ah, down at Ohio State. He's probably out the door now and so. Ah, you don't have to worry about him. So now I don't think I think he comes but what he thinks he comes back. What? What would Prompt him to come back if he feels like he's a first or second rounder in the in the in the NFL draft. Look around in the NFL. That's all. I'm going to say. What team quarterback if he look, he's got a chance to Better his skills and get a better chance to come out. I mean, we know that Trevor Trevor is going to be the number one pick overall. So with that being said, I mean, Justin feels could be a number one pick that the following year if he wanted to, But I get it and he could make more money. He could probably make more money this time around, but he probably if he waits He may He may get to go the neck. Yeah, you know, maybe maybe, and ah, you know, you might make more money than Ah, then. Ah, he would make this year and He might even make more money than Ah, well, that's another story. I'm not going to go there, but, uh Well, what I'm saying is somebody is going to pay him. Very well for his services. If he goes now and ah and boy that I think that would be tough to turn down. I just, uh so we'll see. I mean that, but that's what we're talking about. Now. All these things, okay. Nico Collins, stick around for Ah. For the fall and really go two years without football. Um Before he takes a jump and goes, the NFL does does quickly pay hanging around. What one of these guys that are in position? To Ah, have and generate NFL interest. What do they do? And you're gonna have that guessing game? Ah, starting now and right on through the winter. No, You're right. That's not a lot of Yep. Go ahead, Jamie. Sorry. No. Go ahead. No, Dennis, you got it. I was going to add..

"His current deal it maybe it's a financial thing looking like someone who had stated the number nine recruiting class right now that's why James Franklin name was out there to guide he he had USC's backing he could probably be even better coach with even better town if you're just getting into your car on the white Sox also missed out on Zack Wheeler they claim or at least quotes sources claim the white Sox offered more than Philadelphia but he went to Philadelphia because of family considerations I'm with the cat I said at the beginning of the show I acted like I think it may be something that you may be happy about down the road yeah no I think you made a great point early that if you're going to be out there bidding for a pitcher and you were willing to give more than a hundred nineteen million why not go all the way an offer to stop Strasbourg test I take the chance there on Madison Bumgarner in now other than the two guys exact Gerrit Cole and also Strasbourg he's the number three rated pitcher laughed and according to Bob Nightengale there are sources that are telling him that he they believe Bumgarner will get more than a hundred million in remember Carmen was saying Hey you in and now are the you said it to that you were hoping that he'd be a guy that you can get for like seventy million or seventy five million he's a god it's going to unless he's what is he doing Mallory's reckon a dirt bike or whatever he's doing he's gonna give you two hundred L. yes but that's where his career it kind of shifted and he's no longer the same player that he once was he's but he's still pitched over two hundred any you know certainly in so there's something to be said for that right I think that's what and the number that so we just mentioned over hundred I can understand why because of bidding wars probably gonna break out because of the lack of sound arms on free agency but the reality is as a Sox fan I think that's just paying for past performance and you will regret if you give medicine bomb guy and I don't answer deal I think Sylvie is is is is is spot on I mean look if you're going to get in the building you know into a bidding war with some of these teams for some of these pictures that shoot hot shoe higher than you're never you're never going to be in a better situation actually for financially than you are now yeah three years ago you could be in a ton of the guys that are going to be difference makers in this league I'm tired I'd be mad if this was my team because I'm tired of spending need guys like Adam Dunn or who is the guy who enemy Adam laroche enemy in our data for and I'm sorry yeah but for for the Diamondbacks but they signed him to a team friendly deal I'm just tired of the big level guys if you continue to bring in and just sort of pacify everybody saying Hey look we're spending money but we're not really spending money if you're gonna spend money spend money and you've got all the room in the world so it's fine to say look I completely agree with you and I'm just look and maybe naively I'm not getting as upset as a maybe in a few months once all these free agents all these big names maybe I'm holding out hope that they do get involved in call in Strasbourg but that seems like a.

"That's out there and some of the technology that's out there and some of the signs and sits out there to make the best decisions for your program without losing that toughness that grittiness that you also need in our game. Coach I'm I'm here with this because I'm a first time head coach just finishing my first season as a high school head coach I think you like the fact that we use. We are for High School Mantra. But if I had to ask you one question I want to ask you about culture building it and maintaining it. You've done it at two different places. How do you build it? And how do you maintain it. Once you begin to have success. Yes so it's interesting one of the things that I think first of all that we all better be careful of whether it's culture culture whether it's standard whether it's cloud corner we have a tendency is coaches and leaders to throw these terms around. But we've never truly been able to articulate or define what that word means in our. I mean how. Wait Times you've gone through a whole sees the end of the season in ninth grade or a freshman goes coach. You've been saying cloud quarter all year. Long what the Heck's cloud court uses assume they know and I think it's the same same way everybody throws culture out you read books you go listen to speakers you hear coaches and they use the word culture thirty five times in their presentation but have you ever really defined it. That players know what you're talking about so I think one of the things you have to do is whatever you're talking about in your program you know whether their core values or whether they're your overall philosophy you can't assume that people know what those things are for me you know It's making sure that players understand number one that you care. It's gotTa start with relationships building that trust I and the relationships with the players because I believe once you have that you have the ability to take the program and the kids to a level that they're probably not able oh to do on their own. Why because you can be really challenging and demanding on people if they know it's coming from a place where you're doing this because you care about them and you care about the program and when you have that trust and you have that respect and those types of relationships then you can really do some significant a significant things not only as a team but also individually so it starts with that it starts with trust the thing I would also tell you is? It's amazing. Amazing what you can get done within your locker room with identifying some weaknesses. Maybe things that have been there for a long time and getting them affixed so like for example when I got vanderbilt. The locker room was in bad shape. Well that locker embiid in bad shape for a long time and the administration supported me to get it fixed fast so now they saw a guy who had a plan a very clear plan he had a vision and I was fighting for them to get things done and they saw it happening so it gave me instant credibility with them. I'd also make the argument. It's amazing racing. What you can get done with a hat t shirt and what I mean by that is I as a as a high school coach? You're talking about is the first time I would set up ten meetings with influential people in that community. The Superintendent principal the mayor. Whoever it may be invite him the lunch and they're gonNA be sitting there waiting for you to ask them for something and you don't ask for anything and you give them a hat and a t shirt and you ask? What do you know about this community now? Now that you wish you knew when I got here give me that information and you don't ask them for anything you give them a t shirt at the end of the at the end of the meeting you say to them you say. Hey if there's ever anything you need from me or our program don't hesitate to reach out and those guys leave that meeting and they say hey this guy really care about the kids. This guy really cares about community and now when you do need something down the road and you call. They're more willing to help you because they know where your heart is and how you're invested so you've got to create that culture turned out bion in the locker room but then you also better do it in the community because when you can get some of those yeses when you really need them. They're going to be valuable. That's great advice. That is outstanding coach. Coach we've got Sheet full of notes. Here just a couple more things when you look at Co Scott's Garfield who coach me at APP state. He said the one of the big keys for him when he took over there was open the door to the head coach's office you have players. Come in you've talked about building relationships. How do you go about doing that? One on one with the kids. Yeah I I think you're exactly right and I got so much respect for coach. Who will we played them? Here at Penn State Last year and we were lucky to get out of there man. They played great against us. And he's doing a great job. Louisville's well obviously but yeah. I think there's a lot of as doing it. I think everybody uses the open door. You know philosophy and I think that's great. I always tried to maybe take some other approaches. That maybe aren't as common or as Cliche and the wrong way coach. Misinterpret what I'm saying but everybody says an open door so what I try to do is try to identify identify. Certain amount of guys every off season and I take them out to dinner and we do the Thursday night dinners at my house with a lot of coaches. Were you have a position group over to house for dinner and and that's really good but I also think spend one on one time like you'd mentioned is really important so what I did is identify vice. Certain on our guys each off season go out to dinner with one on one talk to them. Ask them how their families doing. Ask them how schools go. What are the issues? What are the problems? What are the challenges? Oranges what do you like about the program. What don't like about the program or the head coach? What would you change and just sit there and talk you know and and you know the only bad part again? Is this a state college so I ended up going to the same Burger joint like thirty seven times in a row when it comes to show up but but I think that more than anything. It's not just the information you gain but it's just taking a moment with that kid to show them one on one that you care and that you listen and those things go along ways you know they really do and and the other thing. That's always interesting as the head coach. Is I miss being with a position because the position you've got to know that those guys on one of very significant level because you spent two hours a day with them and sane guys over to your house every Thursday night. My wife still very close with all the quarterbacks that I coached at Kansas estate in Maryland and in those places but as a head coach you never really get enough time with any of the players to build it on the same level that a position coach would so you have to work hard that you know but what I will tell you is there's value because you may not know any one one group but you know the whole team better and not just know the whole team. You may know you may know an individual may be better or differently because you you learn things about him from three or four other conversations you had with other players that allows you to put the whole puzzle together and and to me. That's what we're all trying to do is the best way that we can make. Decisions as leaders is by having much information. And if you're getting information from your staff ah you're getting information from the administration if you're getting information from the community and now you're also getting information from your players at the end of the day. You GotTa make the decision but the only way you're gonNA make great decision is by having all or most of the information and that's where the relationships are critical coach. I know you've gotta run a practice actor so last thing we've asked us to every guy we've got some great stories best high school football player that you've ever seen could be somebody assigned didn't sign but just best high school go football player you've ever seen we've heard Alan Iverson. We've heard Frank Gore. We've heard unbelievable list of player so we want to get your answer on that one. It's hard for me to say that because I'm GonNA pissed a lot of people that'll say then that I know everybody's done it. Everybody's done it coach. You GotTa do it man. Wow you know who got Sammy Watkins. He's got a ton of votes from from coaches to really hard. It's hard for me not to say saquon Barkley a sequel on loud loud like a whole. It's hard to go against. That guy is a cool picture that I got in my basement with me and Sean Spencer. My D line coach. You had that recruiting area and it's a picture taken from a local newspaper and shot over saquon shoulder. saquon back shod over his shoulder and me and Sean or standing ending on the sidelines scouting the game and this was on was saquon. You know so. It's a really cool shop. I'm I'M GONNA go with my man saquon then wrong. The coach nothing right. You're allowed coach. You're allowed hey thank you so much man again. We've got pages four notes that we learned a lot today and no. You've got a busy week ahead so thank you for your time. We do appreciate it. Thanks guys have a great day thanks goes. Hobart can't coach Franklin enough for his time. They literally had his coaching gear on headed out to the field for practice. So it's great to catch up with him big takeaways. I thought the toughness conversation is interesting. Do you do you recruit it. Do you develop a lot of times. You hear people. I'll say you know it's really fifty of one fifty other you've got to find some toughness but then we really build it. He made it sound like more like eighty twenty. You GotTa go find tough kids because you're not. I can have the same opportunity to train them to make them tough. Yeah I think there's something to that I think inside either. You have it or you don't have it. You can kind of bring it to the service a little more but ultimately if you are tough resilient person like that is in you you can kind of show them the way and give them the tools but if he's not deep down in them I think players have a tough time kind of exhibiting those traits on the feel. Aw I think the thing that he talked about that was really interesting. was hiring us who understand where they're going. Meaning sexy hired a sexy school but but what about when that same coast doesn't have all the resources. izzy resilient resourceful enough to be able to work around it. Obviously with James Franklin He. He came from a situation where he didn't have all the resources so now you give him more resources he is able to kind of take a program and take it to a higher level because he he has more access to other things and so I do believe it was great advice to those who are in the hiring cycle. Who are hiring coaches? Know what your coaches use used to what he's accustomed to make sure that you bring them to a place that either matches that or you may need to look to somebody who has called the ball kind of working a little harder to to count do more with less. I think that is great advice for him. Absolutely they'll thing I'll leave finished with here. I thought when he talked about getting to know the staff the players in the community get to take the time to learn your environment that you're going into before you come and blast them with all the plans and all these great ideas that you've generated across the country where you may be worked previously. Get in there and find out what the needs are what they like what. They don't like what they have what they don't have. And then then you can craft your plan and present your plan. I think just coming in there knocking them over with your plan before you figure out. The lay of the land isn't mistake. I that's great advice not just in the coaching role. Oh but even outside that world you take a new job take a little bit of time to learn a new surroundings. Yeah think so. I think you have to understand what you're stepping into every school. Every situation had his own culture. You need to make sure you kind of ingratiate yourself to the culture understand what the coach is before you begin to make these radical changes absolutely well. It's a fun conversation there there with coach James Franklin we continue to have these conversations on a weekly basis. Hope you guys enjoy him as much as we do. That's going to do it for us today. Thank you so much for tuning an end to move the sticks. We'll catch you next time yeah..
"james franklin" Discussed on NFL: Move the Sticks with Daniel Jeremiah & Bucky Brooks
"Multiple programs. James Franklin has done it he did it at Vanderbilt he assents done it at Penn state and to have penn state consistently competing not only only for the big ten title but being in the conversation to be in the playoffs for that is what you WanNa see so. I'm excited to talk to him about the things that he has done to create the culture at Penn State. Yeah it's a culture really based off toughness and I can't wait to talk to him about how to cultivate. That one of the questions we always are are are intrigued by is tough guys. Do you find. Did you build them. What do they exist out there? You gotta go F- locate a more. You have to be trained up and and and ingrain that toughness on him once they get on campus so those are Conversation look forward to having with coach Franklin and and block. It's it's always interesting to talk to coach coming off a loss. I know this team had been rolling was in the top four in the country tough loss last week in Minnesota Salsa looking forward to chatting with him of of how you refocus a team get them right back on that bike can and Get up and go. Yeah it would be interesting to talk to him. Because when we talk to these coaches we not only. We're talking about the good times. But how do you get your team to respond in bad times. How do you pick them up off the MAT? How do you get them to take on the resume? You see that the head coach has so we'll be able to ask James Franklin those those questions a couple more. Well let's stop. We'll stop telling you what we were going to ask him. And let's just do it. Here's our conversation with the head. Coach Penn State University city. James Franklin all right coach. Appreciate your time today. The first question for me you guys have have built such a strong culture there a lot of times you. You have a tough team like this. Adversity brings out that toughness. You guys have your first loss of the season last week. What have you seen from your team this weekend? Response Yeah well. We'll find out more today the way we do it here. We we have a light. Practice on Sunday make corrections basically a walk and Talk Walk Scouting Report on our next opponent on the field and then we're off on Mondays and then practice Tuesdays. I thought in the locker room it was the correct response. Obviously a lot of raw motioned guys were hurt and and then our guys on their own on Monday while we come in and game plan and do those types of things so today will be a really good idea but from my conversations with guys. I think we're in a good place. We'll use this. You have a choice in my mind. Everything is used for fuel when you win a game. That's used for fuel from confidence perspective. When you lose a game mm you can use that as fuel to make sure that you do everything in your power date you ever feel that way again coach? As a coach you are responsible for setting division of the program and so you talked about going through those those high moments in those lows. How are you able to keep your team on a consistent plane so they can sustain it week to week over twelve L.? Thirteen fourteen weeks season well for us. That's where we we really try to do the one no mantra and we don't just talk it. We live it and everything we we do be worked around a lot of coaches where they say that you know. We're going to do the WanNa know deal but then they get up in front of the team and you can tell that this game is more important than another game and that may be going to class that maybe the weight room. It's all it's it's winning the moment it's being present and those types types of things and I think we've we've done a pretty good job of that. Obviously since I got here you think about where the program was right before I got a job to where it it is. Now we've made significant strides. Obviously hard to have this conversation after you know just having our first loss at a season. But I've been I've been impressed with it But we try to live live it. We try to be consistent with our behaviors and our habits approach and so far we. We've done a pretty good job of that coach. You mentioned where this program was when when you got there. I want to go back to that time when you took the job and your first meeting in front of the team when you got a chance to deliver that first message. I'm anxious to hear what that message passage was and how it was received. Well you know you're talking about one of the more challenging times in maybe college football history. You're talking about now if you look back. If you count interim head coaches there was the same head coach here for like eight years and then I was was the fifth head coaching. Twenty seven months. If you count the interim so obviously ill I think one of the most important Borton messages was me that I want to be here and had plans to be here and that I was invested in them invested into program but there was a lot for me to learn all these universities and all these programs are very sophisticated and complicated. And you have to be careful because if you think you can just bring the model from program x and just plug it into programs e. It doesn't look like there's lessons that can be learned but you you better understand what your what your work was. I think one of the most important things you can do is is having some some really good conversations with with the players and then also finding out who are the people that have unbelievable institutional knowledge in community knowledge. That are going to get. You caught up the speed as quick as you possibly can so so for me. It was you know basically speaking from the art and tell them how excited I was about being here and and how we were going to build this thing together but there was a wall put up at that point because again I was the fifth head coach. Twenty seven months to stand up in front of them and sell them on a vision and Selma. I'm on a plan so it was gonNA take some time that knocked out wall down and build that trust backup not really in me but in whoever was sitting in this position Shen coach. What was instinct about what you just said? You said you can't necessarily take one motto from one school and drop it in the other school. How how do you know what things are able to be carried over? And how do you know where you need to Kinda create new traditions. But you need to do new things that are very specific vic to the school where you're at Penn state well to me. That's where like your core values that that's where they are critical. That's where you know your your mission. Statement is critical. That's where your overall you know. Your overall philosophy is critical so like for me it sounds very simplistic but my philosophy loss. If he is everything starts and ends with relationships so every decision you make within that organization that building it better be something that builds olds and strengthens relationships between individuals but also within the team that's holding people accountable. That's all those types of things So my point is says those big picture common themes that are critical in any organization in any environment. Those don't change but what your point is a good one understanding what that university is like what things do carry over from Vanderbilt. That makes sense at a place like Penn State. And what don't you know me go into Vanderbilt walking around the union and try to convince students to not go home for Thanksgiving. Thanks giving break. Stay for the Tennessee game. I don't need to do that. You know a little different different model little different model from that perspective and you know it did take some adjustment because less of that was needed but but I just think being able identify those things. Here's the critical things that are never going to change your core values your core beliefs and then all these other things. It's got to be built. You know no different than the offense. It's got to be built to the personnel. You have no different than the defense. No different than recruiting flossy. They're recruiting philosophy. Penn state is very different than a recruiting philosophy. Sophy at Vanderbilt and I think that one of the distinctions at a lot of people probably would think about is we're going to recruit probably more national at Vanderbilt than we are Penn State and people said well that doesn't make sense. Why would you do that? We'll number one. Because the academic requirements you had to go broader but the other thing is we had international airport. There you know so you could get anywhere. Where at Penn State? This isn't it. Yeah I don't know if you guys have been here. This is an easy place to get. It's not only getting recruits here here. It's also been able to get our staff out efficiently so all those things kind of factor into it and that's why your plan has to be very specific traffic to the university in the program. I'll make one more point on that. I think one of the big mistakes that that sometimes eighties or presidents or search berms make is they go higher the sexy higher from the sexy school. Well that's fine if it's sexy school too sexy sexy school but if you go hire a guy from a program that's in the top five that's always been the top five that have every resource necessary. And now he's got to go take over a job at a place that doesn't have the resources and you gotta find ways to make things work through creativity TV. You know whatever. It may be a lot of those guys. You're going to get frustrated because they're like what do you mean we don't have this or what do you mean. We don't have that so finding those guys that are going to find ways to solve problems and be creative and come up with solutions rather than always the guy that's had reason to be successful his his whole career. Yeah the head. Coach is sitting there going. Wait I have to go pick up the recruit at the airport. Where's where's our staff to get that done a little different their Coach the Penn State Football Program. I mentioned a little bit just toughness and you play in a conference where I look. I think we've seen the speed with the top teams in the conference. You go to another level over the last decade but still there's A. There's a toughness element you have to have to win in the big ten. So when you're building your Ross. Going out recruiting kids. I'm always fascinated by whether you believe you have to go fine tough kids or whether it's the programs responsibility to build toughness into into them once they get there. Yeah I think you'd better go find toughness. I think coaches are always trying to develop it and you always is will. I would also make the argument. It's harder to develop toughness now probably more than ever You know this is a very popular thing to say right now. But I'M GONNA say it anyway. You know this generation gets more and does less US than any any time in the history of football and I know that's the complete opposite of the conversation that's going on right now but it it is. I mean you know even when I played division to ball. I don't know if it was necessarily legal but we did it. We did three a days the entire camp the entire. Can't and I'm not exaggerating cracks in the Maurya practice and afternoon then we had a special teams and conditioning practice at night the entire camp and now we we. We can't even do two days and I'm not don't don't Miss Remember what I'm saying. I'm not saying that these decisions are wrong. But when you think that you're going to be able to develop toughness snus now in kid doesn't have it with the limited amount of time that we get with them and practices. It's very difficult to do. Do I think you can develop it to a degree. Yes but but you better go find you. Better go find speed on the front end. You'd better go find toughness on the front end. You can coach to fundamentals and techniques coach. I real quick here buck just just just just just rope. I just wanted to touch on that. You say you can improve it a little bit like how just give me me an example of of your program how you try and grow that that culture of toughness there once they get to campus all. It's funny because like so forever. Everybody you guys did it. You do the morning workouts. Where in the off season you do the morning workout? You bring them in at five o'clock in the morning you know. It's not a whole lot. What about development techniques? It's about building mental and physical toughness. It's about going through that shared adversity to bring the team together and guys have been doing it forever. Well now. There's a lot of this generation that don't necessarily always understand Y. Are we doing something. That doesn't like correlate directly to fundamentals and technique or speed or strength. They don't seem to understand our value that bringing the team together and that adversity that you have to go through that mental and physical. Toughness that you're trying to develop I and then you also have the sports scientists that are saying well. Why are you waking up at five o'clock in the morning sleep is critical development? So there's just so many different voices is in perspectives in angles. That are coming. So it's how do you balance that. How do you take some of the information?.

"Great. That's a great one. No, no, just all I did was I said, I wished the prince had been out there with them with the king and the Queen AB nice. But certainly he'll he'll come up with something this weekend. And you guys already know who what I like, I'm not I'm not making any secrets about it. But you know, what I don't think it even matters because I feel like you're gonna come with another monster play, and it's just going to render all my pixie, relevant, man. Who knows maybe I just take it knee and waved the white flag and say, you you can't take it when you're behind. What do you? What are you James Franklin as you can give up you can start? You can do it all missed it against Alabama. Just say, hey, let's just take the l. That's no fun. No. That's not in my DNA either. I. What was I going to say, oh, so you're on the t box because I am I lost more money last week. Yeah. I can go. I'll just give you guys already know what I like. But I'll give it to you. Anyway, I I'm gonna play all just do like this. I'll play Seattle I'll do plus one and a half for. I'll do it for a dime. I bet it a plus three. But I think they're gonna win the game. So I'll take the one and a half. That's fine. All right. My first place going to I'm going to do something. I don't know. It's like, you know, those like you just keep doubling up until you win kind of things. That's a risky strategy. But a continue continue is every half gonna go under. Probably not I would think I would get eight half's here. Right. Yeah. And I just think what defense now just nonexistent. In so many in so many ways. Some pretty good defenses playing on Sunday. Yeah. I don't know about the the Saturday again. Well, actually, there's pretty good defense plan on Saturday too. But there's some very good defenses playing in those those two games on Sunday. I guess I I just feel I non existence a wrong word because I obviously there's some stud defy defenders and stud defenses. I just feel like. I don't know man these quarterbacks and these offenses are too involved. And you just have these penalties now with capacitor Fearance. And frankly, the Degan squad just feel like over the way to go. And I know that sounds very square, but I mean, we know how painful this debate under these days. Yeah. That's for sure. Well, I find betting on the NFL in general painful, but certainly unders or particularly painful special kind of pain. So I'm gonna play the first half over in Houston and Indy. And then maybe Twitter, we'll have some activity after that. But let's start with the sort of five K on the over first-half over twenty four for five. K that gives me some action in the first game. Yeah. Already got my action in the second game. I'm gonna go to the third game. And you guys know that how I feel about the chargers. I'll take the chargers plus two and a half. I'll do that for a dime as well. Right. So L A C plus two and a half hour you in the LA calling LA thing and all that. I almost call them San Diego in every interview I do. And I do a lot of interviews. So think about what I'm saying. I I almost I always go San oh. I mean chargers it, Los Angeles. Chargers doesn't sound right. That all it does not sound right at all..
College Football: Ohio State, Clemson and two season-defining drives
"College football continues to be wild. It continues to be wacky and it continues to deliver with every part of drama that I want. And yesterday we got it with those two months dries from Clemson in Ohio State, maybe perhaps saving their college football, playoff chances here, the first part of the season. Yeah, you know, the frustrating thing for me is we've been talking over the past several weeks, Alabama has yet to show any sign any sign of whatsoever. Right. And for a while, we were saying that Ohio State was kind of the one lone saving grace. We take a high of state can can compete, but Mahanta state verse TCU they took to the third quarter for them to finally exert their dominance. And last night that game looked a lot more like the look. A lot more like Penn State lost that when then Ohio State won at Dwayne Haskins, you know, looked very humid you took. You took that that was a Penn State choke job. I mean, look at the fourth down. There's there's a, there's a whole Twitter, anarchy right now over the play calling at the end of that game. You know what happened is fourth down and five after Ohio State takes the ball, what ninety plus yards to score after being down two touchdowns with eight minutes to go James Franklin in urban Meyer have like a time out, like who's going to like basically it was like an old school western duel, right? You call your time out and let me see what play you're running. And then James Franklin calls the time out in Franklin decides at this point that he despite having trace McSorley go for what it seemed like nine thousand yards in that game. I know it was only what four hundred in. Four hundred seventy yards of total offense. He decides to take the ball out of McSorley hand and run a quarterback draw on fourth in five.
Ohio State football has everything at stake against Penn State
"We got Penn State Ohio State this weekend, and it's a playoff game. It is, what do you expect? Well, and to your point, people always like expand the playoff and go to eighteen sixteen teams. This is a playoff game. It is. This is an elimination game. I'm going to be at another one up. These are the games and we talk about this game on this show because with that playoff predicted that tells you even if you were just an essay. Person, and that's all you watch. You don't watch any game outside of the conference. You need to keep an eye on this one because you're going to see more than likely one of these teams because listen that play predictor at Penn State where to win this game this weekend, they're the ones that are gonna take over that number four spot. I expect shootout and going into the year, honestly before I was there and personal Saturday, I'm might not have believed that Ohio State could keep up in a shootout with trace McSorley and Penn State. Dwayne Haskins is, is the truth may legit, oh, he's the truth. And there's a reason Joe boroughs at LSU. Yeah, Joe borough is at LSU because Dwayne Haskins beat him out for the Ohio State quarterback job. They engaged in quite a battle during the spring Haskins ultimately wins at I in Happy Valley all day Tuesday. I'm doing a big feature for sportscenter on Saturday on one of a Penn State's offense of linemen. And I talked spoke extensively with James Franklin who you see here, not only for that feature but about his team. He loves his team. They lost a ton offensively. This saquon Barkley to the New York Giants day. Sean Hamilton was one. Of the best and most underrated wide receivers in the country. Last year they got bowlers. So you would expect, okay, they're going to fall off authentically, oh, Appalachian state gave them all they could handle in week one that was actually a great learning experience with this group. So they have resorted all trace McSorley does is win. He is tougher than woodpecker lips man. And I think this one is going to be attract me. I agree with you, and it's going to be so fun to what I learned this from you that trace McSorley won four consecutive state championship, all he does win. All it does all that that young man does is win football games
