"If they knock themselves out of the playoff again or not. Never, nevermind existing in the future or being able to watch the games. It is absolute. I agree with you. It is one of the, it's probably the most interesting conference to watch. You mentioned Colorado with Deion. Is there, do you have like, how is that going to end man? Like, is it like, they're going to be good. He's, he's obviously changing things up and it's a, it's a calculation that the administration has made to become relevant very, very quickly. And it has worked so far. How is it going to end though? I think it either ends with him doing a very good job and leaving for a SEC type of job or it fails spectacularly. And the roster is completely just wrecked for a long period of time. I mean, I I'm very curious. And a lot of coaches and people I talk to as well are curious, how is he going to handle when they start the season, like one in five or something like that? How is he going to be able to handle that when you're not just the shiny new thing anymore and you've got potentially some one -sided losses on your roster because he has improved the talent there, no doubt, but there's not, there's still not a lot of depth. There's not much in the trenches. And if Chidora gets hurt, which is always possible in this sport, especially when you don't have a good offensive line, what happens to Colorado? You wonder early on. Are schools going to try to make a statement, potentially run up the score on them, just to kind of counteract the noise that Deon's making in recruiting? We'll see. That's going to be the big question. That's the reason. That's one of the reasons he hasn't, he didn't get a bigger job than Colorado is because people need to see how he handles what things aren't going the right way. There were some, you know, his first game at Jackson state, he comes in a locker room or it comes in the press conference and complaining that stuff was stolen out of the locker room. He had just kind of some weird things that have, have happened. So he's doing everything he was hired to do so far. The season tickets, the spring game attendance, the money, it's all happening. That's been a success, but we always knew this first season, especially it was going to not be great. So when that's happening, how is he handling the press conferences? How is he handling potentially some D commits from some, some players and stuff like that, that's what we got to see. And that's what I'm fascinated to see how he handles. Yeah. I mean, to your point, Chris Vanini, the athletic, he's done everything he's been hired to do. They're relevant. They're interesting. People care, but like, is he going to out scheme Kyle Whittingham? Is he sitting up late at night, drawing up plays to like out scheme Kyle Whittingham's defense? I don't think so, you know? Right. And at Jackson state, he had the most talented team because he was able to find really good players and get some transfers. That's not going to be the case in the pack 12 where he still has probably one of the worst rosters in that conference. And it would take a number of years for that to change. It's not an opinion. It's a fact. It's science. You had a column and I started the show talking about the big 10 coaches somehow being surprised that night games in November would be in the contract that their university signed, but also that they're just scared of playing night games, even though it would be extremely beneficial. You wrote a column, of course, on Sporting News about how the night games for the big 10 will be good, but it'll take some adjustment time. We're going to be playing playoff games in December, and hopefully some of these teams are going to get some of those games at home. Wouldn't it be beneficial for the big 10 to do this as much as possible? I just think it's part of the tradition. I grew up in central Ohio and Ohio State didn't start playing night games at home until the 1980s. Michigan played their first night game in 2011. Ohio State's only played 10 home games against big 10 opponents at night. So I think the point I made and the adjustment for people that grew up in this part of the country will be, it's not a special occasion anymore. It'll be more of an obligation. And you're right, as we get into November and the NBC deal and the college football off expansion, these night games will be good for the campus. But like I said, if you're eight out of 10, I bet you've asked 10 big 10 fans what their favorite window is, or would say either three 30 or noon than they would the prime time window. And I agree with that. I was born in Madison. I, you know, I was raised in a big 10 family. I went to an SCC school, but like where is Penn State harder to beat at noon and happy Valley or at eight o 'clock and happy Valley? It's clearly eight o 'clock. Ford field, maybe that'll be tougher to beat next year. That's part of this kind of the selling point. But to your point, yeah. I mean, Madison at night is amazing. You know, Kinnick stadium at night is amazing. What wasn't amazing last year was Ohio state playing Toledo and winning 77 21. Now SCC school has been doing that for years, right? So I think that's the adjustment we'll have to make at the end of the day. It's football. We'll enjoy it. But like you said, if you grew up in the big 10 country, you know that that we're slow to adjust to change. Aren't we? It's that big 10 speed Ohio state, Michigan, Penn State feels like a pretty clear top three in the big 10 again on paper in May, I get it. But Michigan has this thing over Ohio state, even though we can still look at Ohio state and say, oh, probably a more dynamic roster, certainly a more dynamic offense. Penn State is sneaky, sneaky, good, but needs its quarterback to come along quickly. What do you make of the, of the three team race in the big 10 again, in the middle of May? Well, I'm wondering what, yeah, of course it's his name. I mean, I'm wondering if this start to feel like the mid to late nineties where you start to wonder whose turn it is. It's no longer just Ohio state and everybody else. I mean, Michigan's made their point with back to back big 10 championships. They've got probably the best backfield in the nation with Donovan Edwards and Blake Corum and JJ McCarthy. That's not an overstatement, I don't think. And they've got some other nice pieces. Ohio state's got the most frontline first round talent, starting with Marvin Harrison. And then for Penn State, I was talking to a station there the other day, and this is the most excitement they've had around the roster since 1999 when they had with Brian and Courtney Brown and withdrew Aller on top of it. It's on them to go out and beat Ohio state in Michigan. James Franklin's done a lot of wonderful things there. Yeah, there was, and I think my tones were pretty obvious, but there were some utterly bizarre selections. Well, yeah. Starting at number 5 the 5th, the 5th best coach in the country, you can't have just a good coach, it's got to be a great coach. First point, Franklin's rated above Ryan day. When it went to James Franklin ever beat Ryan day, when his Shane Franklin taken Penn State to the playoffs. Yeah, I mean, right there, I mean, you're having a James Franklin, who's a good coach. I mean, I'm not here to disparage him. He's got a good record, but he's had four top ten finishes. He's won 11 games four times, but he's never been to the playoffs, Ryan day, I realize he inherited a good program from urban Meyer. I mean, who doesn't realize that? But he still been to the playoffs three times. He played for a national championship. I mean, he came within a second of playing for it again. I really don't, there's just no way you could ever say that James Franklin should rank ahead of Ryan day. Ever. Yeah. Okay. And then we look at both of the Kansas coaches KU in Kate state. Good coaches. Yeah, very good coaches. Are they are either of those guys a better coach than Josh eichel? Not in my opinion. No. Is chip Kelly better than John's hypo? No. I mean, I'm glad you mentioned that. Because this is not a lifetime achievement award. I've done this before with lists are and that's why Sabin is more vulnerable than people think. It's not about the greatest coach of all time. It's about the best coach right now. That's it. Yeah, I mean, you could even, you could even have the argument with dabo that Bruce has given him credit for, you know, four seasons that he had in the past. I would say that Ryan did a better coach than he would rank higher for me than davo right now. And I wouldn't throw dabble out the top 5, but I certainly would have Ryan day ahead of him. Good point. "So far is paid off with an undefeated season. They keep that going. Also the big ten some of the gains of importance you have number. Twenty penn state and ohio state. Ohio state Now ranked number five in the country ahead of the team that they lost to the second week of the season that home oregon but so far the season. If you take a look outside of george over the last couple of weeks he's been playing better football then ohio state now they might not have had the test that some of the other teams have had. But if you take a look at some of these top five top six teams that are currently ranked and you throw in ohio state. I mean it would take a very short list before you say in terms of the best teams in the country pulling in ohio state. Maybe only georgia would you put cincinnati over ohio state. I wouldn't would. You put oklahoma over ohio state. I wouldn't would. You put alabama over ohio state so far with the secondary and some of the defensive lapses that alabama has had the last couple of weeks even though impressive victory over tennessee and have rebounded well since losing to texas am. I was still put ohio state. The way that they're playing Over alabama and yes indiana is overrated but the beatdown that they gave them on the road very very impressive in for penn state knee. Look man james franklin. We don't know what's happening with him. With the penn state situation he's brought in he's bringing in a really great recruiting class. He finally going to be bringing in a quarterback something that he hasn't had sorry shawn clifford a quarterback and get him to possible national championship prestige. The top five were alabama oklahoma clemson ohio state in georgia. Now take a look at them for teams. Take a look for those five teams namely alabama ohio state clemson and oklahoma. I really shouldn't add alabama here. People are just losing their minds on most because of the game against florida on saturday. But i'll go ahead. I'll play that game. I'll go ahead allah. You a look at michigan state. You take a look at michigan all of a sudden now. Those teams have a true realistic shot of believing that they can go ahead in usurp up in the ohio. State reign of terror on the big ten at for one more year. Same thing with the big twelve. Yeah you know what oklahoma who seems. Every year under the lincoln riley loses a game which they should win. They're susceptible vulnerable this year. More than ever offer those conferences. The big twelve the big ten in the acc rookie looking at all of those teams having new conference champions now you can sit there and say are you willing to bid on that. "Know, Jim, that was certainly tough. I definitely wasn't looking to leave New Orleans. I absolutely loved it. There was there for 13 years. I was there for Hurricane Katrina was there when you know the city kind of Came back to life if you will, and to be part of the Saint Organization to win that Super Bowl and see what it did for the Gulf. South was awesome. I wasn't looking to leave. That was a dream job to be the quarterback coach with the Saints working under Sean Payton, working with a guy like Drew Brees every day, but Just like I told the student athletes that we recruit on a yearly basis. I just couldn't ignore that feeling in my gut on my alma mater was down a little bit at that time, and I wanted to do my part to see if I can come back to a place that was special to me. And maybe try to help rebuild it. Maybe, you know, so that was such a challenge that you know, I just couldn't ignore that feeling in my gut when they presented me with the opportunity to come back, and I wanted to come make a difference and part of my roots in the arena League and trying to help build players back up. After they've been cutting the NFL and they thought, you know there was they were down and out, never counted down in the dumps. So I loved the challenge that you know, to come back to ball state and and then try to build something special, and I love having an opportunity to try to impact. 18 1920 year old young man to be difference makers in our world and want to help them all chase their dream. But I also want to help them be a difference maker in the world, and that's the part I love about college football. It's certainly working Mike, newest head coach of ball State, My tear point You had amazing situation with the Saints and again. You played quarterback in college and were very successful and you've worked with some really good quarterbacks along the way. Including Drew Brees. In fact, what was your biggest takeaway from your time with him? You know, the best part about grew Berries. I think his career and what he does on the field when everybody has a chance to watch them on TV. That speaks for itself. But he's such a phenomenal human being and to watch. You know, it made such a lasting impact with me. We would play a game. In the Superdome. It might have been over 4 30 or five o'clock and by the time you know all the postgame, uh, press conferences Rover family time we had a chance to get something to eat. He would take all the little kids whether it's his own kids. Kids of staff members, my son, he'd go back down to the game feel that he would throw the ball on that field with those little kids. For however long it took an hour or two hours and That left left such a lasting impression on my son and to see him No. One that we just got done playing a game and I know he's tired. Don't know which probably ready to go home and decompressed and Unwind a little bit. He's down there with the kids, and that just is such a remarkable human being. And, uh, I'm just he really is a better person than he is player and I know that's hard to believe, because his career was so special talking ball state football for a few more moments, Mike, I've got to ask about your quarterback Drew plate. He's been putting up numbers for years. What is it about him and his game that makes him special? Yeah, I love the swagger that he plays the game with, you know, when you play quarterback certainly got to be a confident on your abilities and you've got to believe in yourself, but he has a great swagger about himself. That's still humble and you know when, when he's out there, man. He is an ultimate competitor. He works extremely hard in the film room when the lights are off, and nobody's watching because he knows that part of the preparation is going to make the difference form on game day, and I'm just proud of them because you know he did something that's never been done here at Ball State, help them lead His football team last year in our program to the First bowl went in school history, and so, um, you know unfortunate to be able to work with a guy like that every day. He's still hungry, though, and you know nobody in our programs fat and happy after You know, accomplishing, you know a special year last year, and so it's great to be around the group of humble guys that are just ready to go back to work. And certainly, um, you know, Drew is one of those guys that is at the top of that list. So finally, you've got a great challenge, but a great opportunity Saturday. You've got Penn State in their place. What is your message to your team going into that game? And what is the key? Yeah, You know, Penn State coach Franklin's done a great job. That roster is loaded from top to bottom. Extremely talented, very impressive Opening game won at Wisconsin on the road. Really a big 10 slugfest type of game. But this will be the first time since 2019 that there will be 106,000 strong and Beaver Stadium. And so we got to handle the noise, which we've practiced our tail off all week long on making it as loud and obnoxious as we possibly can in our stadium with music or the crowd noise, everything we could possibly get our hands on. But they put their uniform on the same way that we do and yes, they're talented, but it's about us, making sure that we clean up our mistakes from game number one, and we put our best brand of ball state football out there on the field and And we've got to build the countenance of three ft. Feel confident in our game plan, and we've studied it. We just got to go out man and cut it loose and we can compete with anybody on underwear. Guys believe that and we're going to respect him because great program with a lot of great talent, and James Franklin's been a winner everywhere he's been, and so it's a great challenge. This is why you play the game, though, and this is a great opportunity for us as a program. Great opportunity. Great challenge for a great opportunity. I like it. I like it a lot. You get ball state at number 11 Penn State, He is the head football coach at Boston. "Game, so our goal Is as much as we want to win all these games. We want to beat our rivals. We need to get back to it. We need to get to not back to We need to get to Indianapolis and play for a big 10 championship. So I put Wisconsin as number three. I got Washington coming in as number four, because even though it's not a conference game, like you said The national implications being on TV, uh, the the tone setting for the season that that big nonconference game for so many teams it not only Gets the positive momentum going, But when we look at the end of the season, when we're comparing two quality teams at the season, it's usually those non conference games that we look at. So I had them. At number four, uh, Indiana at number five because, like you said it was 80 was when you were playing pretty sure 85 80 86 was the last time in 1980 1987. I had to throw the jab and when I have the chance, GMO Uh, but you know, it's been since 86 since we lost to Indiana, so they come in at number five. You gotta and not only that they're predicted to be. I think that the second place team in the East this year or they're they're certainly A team that people expect to compete for the East. So I have them coming in at five Penn State and that that conference You know that that division I don't wanna say rival but like they're they're a team that we expect to compete for the East. So that's why I put them ahead. I think Northwestern, we'll have another good team. I have them finishing out My top seven With you, J Mo, But the fact that Penn State is in the East, That wind will mean a little bit more So again. I part of me just wants to crinkle this up and throw it out because I still can't believe I put Michigan State ahead of Ohio State. But yeah, that's that's my order. Everyone keeps saying No. It's all about Ohio State's all by Ohio State when they are at the top of the mountain of this conference for the better part of a decade. Yeah, it's going to be tough to try to chop them down. But, uh, to give the game a dogfight rather than just laying down and have them trounce all over you. Yeah, that's that's that's a big thing right there. But getting that in states, you know that in state bragging rights. To me, it's bigger, especially when last year. We all thought that Michigan should have won that game and they didn't do it. Uh, number three. Indiana. You know, it's been, you know, almost as old as us, Matt. You know, since the last time that Indiana beat Michigan and I've always said this how many years have I said this that Indiana was going to be a trap game because it was always the game before. Ohio State was always the week end before Buckeye Week. Now it's not But you still have now You got an Indiana team that just that that's coming in this year, and they're saying You know what We're crashing the party. Now we're making ourselves known as being You know, we're going to be A problem in this East Division. We're going to be the problem. You gotta come through us. Now You want to get towards the top. You know, with the exception of that playoff appearance when they were under the, uh, the coaching, uh, lineage of Chris Peterson. But They are still a tough team there from a power five conference. They're part of the alliance now, so I mean, it's Yeah, to me. This is the first big test. That Michigan faces That's why I don't have him at number one, but I do have him further down at number four number five at Wisconsin. I think this whiskey matchup. I mean, how many times have as Michigan gone into Wisconsin and fourth quarter comes around, jump around plays? It gets loud at Camp Randall. The something it brews different up there in Madison, Wisconsin. And they've been pretty much down in the West, with the exception of the past two years when Northwestern found a way to sneak themselves in I've got Wisconsin at five. Number six. "Yeah well obviously they're not going to do that So again just when you think you wanna trust these guys again They they go in a different direction. I'm let me call on ryan day. I've only talked about it earlier. About his recruiting but so many people are are trying to differentiate urban and ryan day. And i know ryan day is not one of the title but his. His resume is just unbelievable. How would you differentiate these two And are you in. Why are you optimistic That ryan day is going to continue this on other than the brand is ohio state liberal one. Both those guys are extremely intelligent. Way day is very intelligent. I mean i think that has a lot to do with success. He knows what he knows and he knows what he doesn't know and wants to find out you know That's one way of the curiosity factor. There takes you a long way when you're the leader of a of a program or corporation or whatever you know so number one. That's what both of those guys have going for him. you know. Urban meyer walked into house state and it was almost like a rock or a front man. You know Taking the stage ryan day was the guy playing. You know maybe rhythm guitar back there in the you know the last couple of years when he got hired as he quarterbacks coach and then elevated pretty much to the office coordinator Or at least had you know those kind of duties when he had that Three game Sabbatical when urban had three game suspension and And ryan had three day three game intern ship. I guess what. I should say as the head. Football coach Once again he leaned on guys to help him get through it but he also showed leadership that just struck gene smith. Big time and the thing about rand. He's you know he just strikes you as this real guy. You know what i mean. Urban you know for urban strikes. A lot of people i think is almost you know unless you know him. He's almost unapproachable or something. Like sort of you know Like a lot of people are afraid to like even go up and say hi you know and But i've always found urban engaging when i when i get to talk to him so You know it's it's what you know what you don't know an regard but ryan is very personable You know these recruits. He's taken what he's taking a lot of what urban left behind like the real life quincy program and stuff and people can laugh at things like that all the time but you know those things that's really come into bear big time now with the names. You likeness ohio. State has been working really hard to prepare. You know the players for for life after football or life postal. how state and Yeah that's a great recruiting tool to. There's no doubt about it because a lot of players come in and talk about that but ryan is taking it to another level now you know. He embraced all the challenges of the covy situation. Just like make saving did just like devo did. That's why they were back in the playoffs last year when other we'll love other programs maybe struggled and but that's what i like about him. He's always looking for a new way to do things and he's very engaging Football clinic or where. he was Giving a lecture one time and it crowd dwindled down to pretty much just about five or six of us. Sports raise and a couple of the coaches weren't asking any questions. And i just started asking him questions about different things and their offense and he was answering them. Those pretty cool you know and But it just gives you a good feeling about the guy because all the recruits and everybody talked about the family atmosphere to house state when when they show up and i don't think they're i don't think they're bs. I mean two three. Mola while the kid that they just signed the five star you know. The organization's been made aware of multiple vehicle accident involving outside linebackers Coach Britt Reid, the team senator statement. We're in the process of gathering information. The drunk driver had a passenger in his car, and that passenger and it was a family member of the drunk driver ended up dying. That was The story with with my friend, too. Luckily did survive. But once you get on the road, you may be safe. You may be the person that you know when you're in your car. You think you're doing everything the right way and because someone wants to drive drunk. I've zero tolerance for that. And my mom also She was hit by a drunk driver as a kid, so I have no tolerance and no sympathy for anyone that drinks and drives. "We got Penn State Ohio State this weekend, and it's a playoff game. It is, what do you expect? Well, and to your point, people always like expand the playoff and go to eighteen sixteen teams.
