"And we played against like brandon jacobs. Pleading stephen jackson shot. All you guys. Who are just absolute fucking thumpers. And i remember talking to james farrior like foot in letting all these guys who are like fucking flat mall stars near just like you know they just like that at hof like big strong quit and he wants all the smoke in so so extra eggs that well you know what willie i have never ever ever heard an athlete describe like that. Just like just inhale x. And that might be the most the best compliment i've ever heard in athlete receive ever. Yeah it's like no matter what's your favorite show and your wife is night. Oh baby i need you to go do this like fuck. You wouldn't in my life right now. My job yeah. I love it i love. It has great data. That's good insight to that. Was the one guy that he they fucking a like. We're known for playing like don't against bruises. Yeah well you play marshawn you light. Okay let me just let me throw a mouthpiece out i've got a fucking grip my back and my teeth hit smoking All right so it's to me before we move on though. I do want to talk about. Roman here classic. I mean i would it be classic. We gotta talk about people who need their swipes to last longer in bed. All right that's all i'm doing. I'm not stalling. Even though i don't know who. I wanna pick right here. Romans waves help you. I need romance. Rather i need stalling method. I could wipe a swipe my draft right now. both guys. Would you say looking for boehner. Yeah yeah yeah you you know. You know the drill here really. Most guys just tried different ways last longer and bad. But thinking about who you're going to draft third round doesn't work for you so get these roman swipes are clinically proven way..

"Maybe isn't the best to covering the tight ends just yet. That's what show here to do. You know we've talked about. Is he gonna wear to green dot. Which is going to be a position okay. He's going to be the guy that can cover somebody. I mean we've seen him pick off base and rudolf. Enough times. That i think and i think bend we be like okay. It's good to have some of this on our side. Finally what what is it with with the green dot. you know. that wasn't a big deal until just a few years ago. Now it's like. Oh they're the they're the head ranger you take out that power ranger and you take out all voltron. Does it matter who we making a big deal about the green dot. Well i don't know. I think it's one more way that we can separate one player from the rest. I think whenever as fans we see a player given additional responsibilities and additional duties. We think it's at the expense of everyone else. I don't think that's necessary the case here. I think this is a guy that you know. Maybe by him having a green dot. Maybe by him having the calls that let's bush just kind of run out there and free lance and hit dudes and ron and just be super athletic joy. I so i don't see it as a shot at the other guys. What i do kind of wonder about is we're gonna shelbert degreen dot and make it all the calls a guy that's been on the steelers roster. I believe at this point four days more than you and i yeah. He's watched about as much steelers footage as baker. Mayfield has so you know. Hey i don't wanna i don't wanna you know. Deflate the air out of this exciting situation. You know joe showboat a guy. We didn't even know we needed a week ago. Now is here to save our defense but look at the conversation on twitter. A lot of steeler fan super excited. But where were the jacksonville fans. It was a lot of crickets coming out of jacksonville as far as this. I don't even think jacksonville new. They had this guy on their roster where was blake bortles. Where was that guy. Come meeting us up at ireland's bar and grill walking in with his blake bortles jersey. Do remember that guy and then when then he switched to to what what what was divall. is that what. That's like the chant that's duval county florida. They go do all yeah. I was driving by ireland's all night. I didn't see blake bortles out there celebrating this. They're crying about the the departure of schober. What's that mean. When i look on social media and i don't see jacksonville crying peep about losing this. I think it's a little bit of a what a team was wanted. Fifteen hundred or whatever they were. They had the first overall pick. I don't think you're concern as a fan. Base is geez are linebackers are struggling in coverage. Like i mean sort of like you know. All my house was reduced to rubble. What a problem it had with the addict. I think it's it's i disagree with just a slight bit. I do think you know what i saw on twitter and maybe even slightly less toxic circles and you but i doubt it because it's twitter is that i think folks were worried about who what linebacker can cover somebody. I mean for lotteries. And so it's not nineteen ninety-seven anymore so you don't need to big dudes just running right at the line and sitting in the box and tackling your two hundred sixty pound running back duty the guy that can cover a wide receiver for a second and a half. And i don't know if we even had that guy before show came in. So i mean it's it's i think it's more like okay. It's almost like we went to a yard sale for like a house that got hit by a fire. And we're like okay. We'll take your painting and we'll give you ten bucks a state sales. I highly recommend it. Look hey don't be surprised. Steeler nation if our linebackers are still getting burnt by whiteouts out there you know. I don't think schober it's gonna come in and run made demand with dez bryant. Anyone out there you know maybe dez at this point bill. Yeah i mean. It was single people on twitter bryan. Yes i mean. I think it's a steelers tradition. Going all the way back to james farrior getting burnt out of the backfield by you. Know a jacksonville running back or if it's going to be a wide out so be it. I just don't think that we're gonna see the kind of success on defense that people are expecting with showed. I think we're still gonna have the same struggles that we deal with every year. I could certainly see that. I was going to say i can get go back even further. I can close my eyes. And i still see alfred papu running through the defense in the afc championship game with the chargers. But i think that. I keep coming like i said i come back to that thing about the second half shelbert can buy them an extra second half. Maybe the pass rush gets there may be. That's anger maybe that seismic maybe that keeps all four guys that are trying to block. T. j. watt may be that opens up that extra space. I think i think that's a bet worth taking because again. I keep sit with the alternative. Spelling wasn't buying that second of the half wonderful interception against lavar. And then i think that was kinda add like explain. Splaine's highlight reel is two plays right now and they were great play. He contributes at still a great little place. You can tell me a motivational speaker with those great place. And you're like dancer dine. Yeah I wanna pivot a little bit. This is still kind of within the deal. But kevin kevin colbert okay. People are just just a deluge of praise onto kevin colbert which you know wholeheartedly deserves every every. But let's not forget that he's not. He's not the perfect. Gm out there you know for every for every you know every schober signing we've had a larry green or who also had a couple of good plays against the bengals but he had honest. No one knew concussion. Thing anyone thrown off. I mean dante. Moncrieff or morgan burnett or blunt. Even bostick bostick. So you know we. There's a whole lot of praise out there. i've seen. I'm trying to find the tweet right now. I saw some some. Some guy was Had bought the a jersey with colbert. Put colbert on it that that might be. That's a bit much. I saw the tweet where someone had made their own. T shirt that said in the style of the godfather. It said the general manager. So there's already colbert. Merged wearing out there. If you if you're out there at the stadium with kevin colbert jersey than you know. More praise to you. But yeah i mean that's but you know this comes off to me a little bit suspicious a lot of this. I don't want to say. I don't wanna say that for a lot of fans that kevin colbert is our white night but there's another partner in the room with kevin colbert. And that's mike tomlin. Certainly who doesn't get the same type of praise. That colbert is certainly getting this month. Okay sure colbert has done. Great deals with. I'm thinking martavis brian. How he dealt him yes. Ab how he dealt how he went with that..

"Going to be crazy. That i'm putting him for because he's such a great player. I'm gonna go with rod woodson. He's another player. From that era that i grew up loving i'll never forget. I had a starter windbreaker that had woodson twenty six on the back and i wore that thing out. I mean i love that. Jagged was great war with pride every day to middle school. And i just loved it. Okay so i have five very foster four rod woodson. Now we get into the tough part number three number three. I'm going to go with at davos. Jerome bettis there was no one better than the bus when the guy go and come on. I know people want to talk about these other running backs and gravy on bell and you can even go to other teams. There is no one better than the bus when the bus goes on. Never forget the snow game against chicago. Jerome beddis run wild. And i think it was mike logan. Maybe set on the sideline. The media's james farrior. The bus has snow tires on it just great. It's just awesome. He epitomizes the pittsburgh steelers even. He wasn't drafted by them. He is a steeler through and through hall of famer absolutely loved the boss. Number two is my waist number one. It's everyone's top-five i feel. He just got into the hall of fame. And that's none. Other than the tasmanian devil troy paulo malo a. He was just so great so humble and then watching that speech that he gave for the hall of fame induction was just amazing and number one on my list of all time. Favorite steelers has to go with number seven. Ben rothlisberger count me as one of those individuals that was completely completely engulfed in big ben. Big ben mania in two thousand and four. I was a college student aid. I was just that team that fifteen in one team. The run that they went on with ben. I've been a ben rothlisberger fan ever since n. I've never denied that. Either i have one player's jersey in its ben rothlisberger. I have the old throwbacks. I have the home. I have the away i had the old authentic. I have replicas. I have the nike. All of ben rothlisberger. I won't where another players jersey until ben rothlisberger decides to hang it up and so for me. That's my top five number five. Barry foster number four rod woodson number. Three bus jerome bettas number. Two troy paula. Malu in lumber one. Big ben roethlisberger's there. You have it by writer dr crew. You're the best for giving me some of these questions. I appreciate it. I'm going to be back on friday talking about expectations for this game on saturday..

"He's better at that are so for me what we're looking at. What steelers debt. As they got an upgrade on roberts blame when it comes to play down and being run stopper they got an upgrade roberts filleting in terms of calling plays and knowing the defense and adjusting to what the at you and they got a guy who can cover and maybe blitz. There's gonna be some interesting things were that we're going to have to see play out like for example. Joe schober was on a terrible defense. Was he targeted less. Because the guys around him were worse than so he was just not the easiest guy to pick on right or roberts. Blame was often hey who he had a target. You're gonna target that backup guy who's never played. Who has you know before last season had exactly one snap on defense and his career so yet he got targeted more are are you gonna see where maybe joe schubert in this defense puts up better stats you know per target. Maybe he gives up fewer completions and so his yards per target. Go down in this year. Maybe we see joe. Schubert is actually a really good blitzer and his his rush percentage in his pressure rates. Go up or maybe we see. That's not a strength of his. And roberts blaine is just a better blitzer. That joe schober. Who knows there are some leeway here that we're gonna have to find out we're going to feel out how schober fit specifically in this defense. Statistically wise like what his productions going to be as he changes roles from from. You know the jacksonville defense to this defense. But really if you watch film. He's very similar to robert splaine. So what you saw the good of robert spilling last year with a little better run stuffing That's what i expect from. Joe schubert this year which is great. That's an upgrade. That's a that's a great addition especially for the for the cost. They got him for so two round out the show into our last little segment here on go through the last rest of the position. We spent a lot of time. Joe show burton inside linebackers. How he fits in devon bush gonna be your number one linebacker if he's healthy. You know there's a chance to steelers really are trying to limit his snaps early in the season because he's not one hundred percent yet i would understand the case or if they just say hey you know what we're we're going to give you a little break. You played a ton last season or give fewer snaps. But he's your number one linebacker eastern over one linebacker show. Joe shelbert is good and coverage but there's people out there saying he's better than david bush coverage in that's just simply not true. Film does not back that up numbers. No back that up. It's just it's not true Joe showers can be number two and he's playing a lot. He's gonna play a lot. He is a veteran of the group. He's going to be that you know the the voice in the helmet. He's gonna be the guy with the green dot he's going to be calling the defense colin adjustments which is good. We need someone who's really good at that. We haven't had someone who's really phenomenal. At that sense james farrior. He might be the best at it. Sense james farrior left and that would be a significant addition to our defense in no other way. is joe schubert. The equivalent of james farrior. That wanted to be clear to say that in case people here that wrong thing. I'm saying joe schober is that good. He's not a but he's going to be the best. Probably you know that that calling captaining the defense. The james farrior dick from a linebacker position. He's probably be the best sense. James farrer left that we have doing that specific job behind him. Roberts he's he's like joe schober and i would not be surprised if they wanna give joe schober to a break. You know it would be probably like in nickel. Where roberts billion really fits in. Well roberts plays a great fit in the nickel defense At at inside linebacker. I would not be surprised to see him there where he can add his blitzing to the pile. Then you have some interesting players behind there. You've got ulysses gilbert the third. You've got marcus allen. And you've got buddy johnson buddy johnson the rookie draft. He looks good. He is more of a thumper he's going to be that guy who can who can mix it up in line take on blockers stuff to run. He's not bad in coverage either at least at the level he's playing now which is kind of the second to third string Players for the other team is what he's been facing and he's shown pretty. Well they're ulysses gilbert. The third loved what he showed as a rookie Loved it his first preseason. He looked dynamic. He got injured. He's a series of injuries. And he has he hasn't really developed and in fact this season you know. I'm still looking for him to get back to looking like that player. He looked like when the steelers had just drafted more. He looked so impressive. I don't know maybe his injuries means he's never going to get back to that ply being that player right now. He's in a battle with marcus allen. Just make this roster bush over explain are gonna make it a buddy. Johnson is is going to be very hard to knock out simply because he is a rookie and he is looking. Really good. Just not quite. Nfl for snaps on defense radhi. He looks like a guy that next year could really take a huge second year. Leap marcus allen. Played really good in very limited snaps against philadelphia. He is not anyone you want to take on a blocker. He is just get swallowed up by blocks but in space and particularly Like a dime back role where he is taking on where he's in coverage on linebackers and coverage in zone. He's really good. He showed some fantastic aggressive defense on running backs against philadelphia When he was in there against a pretty good rookie gain well for For for philadelphia. Who's a good receiver. he did a fantastic job manned up on him really fantastic work. He knows the defense. He's he's got the the i q side down..

joe schober roberts joe schubert james farrior Joe schober steelers roberts blaine schober robert splaine Joe schubert devon bush buddy johnson Joe shelbert ulysses gilbert david bush Joe showers blitzer Schubert James farrer marcus allen

"Like jacobsen at least had some level of pedigree play big time college. Football has skill like skill sets fine. You know what i mean with him is just after the snap. He doesn't see it very well. And i think that's part of why sam allender got got some reps but at least they've got a couple of guys they've drafted that are in the pipeline. I wouldn't i think if you asked most teams. They would take jacobson over. Ben the new teachers based on town because at least east and there's a ceiling there and he played at university of georgia. The university of washington. I think you know you feel more comfortable about going into a game and this is this is really about right going into one game. You feel more comfortable going into a game which jacob and then you would bend the nucci. Here's some good situations. The raiders have marcus. Mariota brown's case keenum. Jags with gardner menchu The saints are going to have either one of the or james and they could both be bad. Dolphins have jacoby. bruce set. Bears niners patriots with rookie quarterbacks. I mean even blaine gabbert isn't horrible right like that's fine. You wouldn't want to be your starter but they drafted kyle. Trask too right. Yeah so like. They've got like a veteran guy and then a developmental guy so they're okay chief sev- chad henny seahawks online. Gino smith have experienced. You're not gonna have. I mean most teams aren't going to have like andy dalton as backup like the cowboys did last year and so i mean having a guy jacoby percent or gino smith. How did the bench not have an established backup quarterback who's not non-threatening is and that's why i still think i still look at it and i don't think nick foles wants to go to the jets and maybe that's a factor in this whole thing. Yeah but i think nick foles would be perfect for the jets. General manager there joe. Douglas was with nick. foles philadelphia. and wouldn't you want zach walsum beyond just what you're saying like which is the in case of emergency break glass thing. Wouldn't you want zach walls to have like a veteran guy in the room as a sounding board you know like the guy who's been there and done it and like can be a resource for them right like you'd wanna have somebody like that in the room so i'm with the. I think that i wouldn't be surprised at the jets. Make a move to put somebody like that in the room zach awesome. It's great to catch up with you as always The best training camp. Stop that you had was where and they'll tell you what like watching the rams practice right now. I think i'm gonna pick the packers to win the nfc but the rams of really they really maybe think about it. I mean i just the way the operation runs and the way matthew stafford looks and just watching where he morris has the new defensive coordinator and watching the way jalen ramsey as with his teammates is a really good vibe. There and can't beat the weather down there either so ram gimme the team. That you came away going uh-huh uh-huh like in a bad way so hard. This time of year say that about anybody the offensive line. I would be concerned with. I would just like that when i was there. They had a rookie at left. Tackle and dan moore a rookie at center. I speak concerned about that offensive line and their defense is going to be really good. Is the defense going to be like like james. Farrior troy paula. malo james harrison. Carry the team good. I think at least for a little while while they figure out the offensive line. They might need to be so. That was the one that really stuck out to me. Was that steelers up. Line and mike tomlin always figures that stuff out that steelers offensive line would have me pretty worried if i was there. Oh this was brought up by one of our listeners. Why are mike. Shanahan and mike holmgren. Not in the hall of fame. I mike shanahan demisch should be. I mean i get the whole thing is about like the story of pro football and like the impact. You've had on pro football. How many teams are running. Shanahan's offense twenty five years after like he like you remember what it was like ninety five ninety six. No one knew what to do with that run game. It basically pumped life into john. Elway's career the very end like that offense that went in twenty five years ago. Half the league's running it now like people who don't like offense coaches who don't know it are trying to get on staffs that run it so they can learn it. You know what i mean. Like how how. He won two super bowls and then the impact that he had on football overall. I i don't know why he has. And holmgren homeowners there to the super bowl two different teams in his coaching trees. Ridiculous like you look at those packers staffs and the guys that were on those staffs. And steve mary you chee and jon gruden and like you go up and down the line like both those guys at least deserve consideration. I think shanahan should be in. And i'm surprised. He isn't and when i look at like bill. Cower jimmy johnson all due respect to those guys i think shanahan has easily on those guys love. Yeah i do too. And i think you're gonna look at bill cower and you're going to have other coaches be compared to build cowards. So mike tomlin is already hall of fame coach in my opinion right right have cowards. In mike tomlin's going to be in. Yeah i think you know to me like it's tough with coaches. Because i think it's not just success. It's like legacy the impact. You know what i mean. So it's not just by tony dungy for example the impact that tony dungy had no tony. Dungy only one super bowl but tony dungy's impact on football the first african-american coach to win a super bowl. The amount of assistance that he had that became really good head coaches like like i would. I don't think you'd argue. Twenty dollars hall of famer but not about his overall record because there are a lot of people who could match his record. It's tony dungy's impact on the game of football and you know. I think that that's sort of what you have to look at. What some of these coaches. that's why would shanahan like his impact is undeniable. Look across the league. Shaw mcveigh his son. Kyle in san francisco matlock. Leur arthur smith who like never coached for him but was influenced by it because he learned his offense from floor like the branches of his tree. All over the place. And so i think you have to consider impact on the game and that to me is like where you separate the guys some guys who've one or two other guys who have won one or two which you know which ones are. Which ones do you give. Entrance to the hall of fame with other coaches who have won four super bowls. The guys like bill walsh bill ballot check and chuck knoll. Great to talk to you. Thanks for joining us as always all right thanks dan. That's albert brewer senior. Nfl reporter for the monday morning quarterback. He's good. I always learned something when he's on James in california. Hey james good morning. What do you have for me today for a long time. Six one to twenty. Yeah you just mentioned on your show yesterday that Kind of with the focal point was gonna be for hard knocks first episode not really focusing on the stars. They i felt like the whole episode was really focused on that prescott. Yeah a little bit of michael. Parsons was kinda. Were you surprised on that or yeah but it feels like they always start with that and then eventually hard knocks is going to be about. Secondary players is there a rift of fight in practice. it's formulaic hard knocks has did i think that they would start out with so much on back. But then they had all of this footage they had the audible of the audio of him talking about. Hey i'm gonna go out there. And i want every snap. And he was gung ho and then mike mccarthy's saying as anybody checking him out. You're going to go out there and get hurt. They had that we didn't know exactly get still a mystery to us this injury. They had the audio of that and that to me was really strong. Zeke elliott trying to wrap a birthday present for act. I didn't need to see it. Felt like it was scripted and the fact that that shows up right after he's finished.

nick foles sam allender jets Mariota brown keenum gardner menchu Bears niners chad henny Gino smith gino smith mike tomlin tony dungy zach walsum zach walls jalen ramsey football rams troy paula malo james harrison blaine gabbert

"There. You know desk best. That's just how it is. And what i've known about seven years you play seven ping pong. Go smoke you plan golf. He smoke you plan to pick up basketball regardless of what would you want to say how he looked he goes smoking. His is like a natural all around athlete. So you like dying seven okay you. You could have been all american basketball player. You just chose football. I can't say that about a lot of other quarterbacks you know in the nfl so savvy in price themselves on being very competitive now to get back on what you said unbelievable like this. You said well first of all. Let's let's be specific just for a second so you said if he wants if he likes you. You're in so. I mean la. I've never heard that. So ben would go to. Calvin colbert mike and say i like this. I mean even draft free agent stuff now is wash your team you on the t. Now you got for him he. He's not a part of the draft in the personnel part. Once you wanna team he feel like you're capable of helping helping the team in himselves. We got actually on wash once. He feels like you might be a problem. Is going to be a little bit. How're you know what i'm saying. So yeah and that's what i mean. He's he's not into the drafting. 'cause that's about kevin cove. I felt like. He's a future hall of fame. Ozzy notion you know what i'm saying. Once he once he writes but seven is okay. If you're not going to be assistant if you're not gonna come in like me if you ain't gonna put into work like me we gotta You know in a mop personal opinion is all off of the competitive of seven. Seven could've played a lot of difference for scholar. A lot accused at about two quarterbacks in the league embiid very successful. and how is your relationship with band. Did you stay mostly on his good side. Shuffleboard champion in the locker room. Talk be talking talking about bid. I'm just looking at it. Probably how you looking at it. So i'm looking at it from a standpoint. Okay you gotta young. Afc north would three youngsters. Joe bar rope a lamar jackson in baker mayfield. If we can't go on to win a championship right now. With seven at him is going to be even harder once you find his successor successor because of the experience alamar half a former. Mvp experience as you can see what baker mayfield not. He got a good gm in head coach. The experience you would have with joe borough in what he possibly could do if he stay healthy. That's looking at it from gentlemen's standpoint. Do you think do you ever worry about. We're not the nba here dude. You got play hard every week. Do you ever worry a little bit about that. That the the physicality diminished a little. No because that's the rules that have changed with the head ups in nfl. You know what. I'm saying so we just as players either. You adjust your to be the league asep if me ryan clark choi model of chris. Casey hilarious James harrison james farrior if all lust was planning right now the way replay. We'll probably be in the league for three years because we they probably would've took all that money and we would have got suspended for six to eight games that along the suspension. That's just what it is. You know what. I'm saying so with a concussion protocol. They change it for us. It was hit the head of the body of follow for these guys. You got a league which showed so as a player you just have to adjust. Not because you really want to. That's the way the. Nfl is going right now. Did you ever feel as a steeler intimidated offensive players to come. You could fuck around us man you as so as as soon as a player or a coach or office coordinator saying we had to be physical against the pittsburgh steelers We already knew we want because that might not have been y'all personality. We knew that we knew that's all not personality was smashed faces in. We used to call it facetime in back in the day and we used to call it catching the bike. Who can be the first to catch a body. You know what i'm saying so for us. We looked at much. I'm calling like so. You mean to tell me i can take the soul out of another man physical wires and not go to jail. So that's exactly what ought without personality was but did we got it off of the greats. the seventy steelers the major green. "In case your first time listening we've had a lot of people join us during the season last year in twenty twenty one that weren't with us during training camp. If you're one of those people just understand the training camp recap is really just a chance for me to let you know what's going on a practice. These will only be happening when the steelers actually practice. Obviously there's not gonna be news when they have the day off in the steelers. Were back on the field for the very first time. They reported on wednesday. Thursday was their very first time at practice. And it wasn't saint vincent college it wasn't latrobe. Pa but there was a lot of news happening amongst the pittsburgh steelers. And i'm going to break it down for you in simple terms is what you need to know The steelers after practice did have three three people. I should say three very important. People available for in-person media. It was actually the first time since two thousand nineteen you know. Mike tomlin stood in front of reporters. They weren't that close but he stood in front of reporters. So mike tomlin office. He spoke to ben. Rothlisberger and t. j. watt. Were the three people that spoke after practice on thursday so a couple of things of note The first thing that came that was really noticeable for me. Was that This mike tomlin said the kendrick green. Everyone's thinking could this guy be the center for the steelers in week. One what he said he is going to be the starter at center at least for week. One of the preseason. He also said the big. Dan more could start at tackle. I'm not sure if it was left to right tackle. But he did say the kendra kendrick green but dan more could be starting as well And then you got a feel for already early in training camp. There were some that were getting into like kendra green guy first team snaps. He dealt with ben rothlisberger on thursday rothlisberger said. Although it's not pouncey he said that Kendrick green communicated did all the calls. They didn't fumble a snap. So good i start for kendrick green but then also antoine brooks junior six round draft pick at a twenty and the twenty twenty draft out of maryland. You know how. Mike tomlin loves disturbs. He intercepted rothlisberger from the slot and rothlisberger. He said quote. He's filling mike hilton shoes. Who's been a rock on that defense for him to make that play. I was happy for him. And then also jim wechsel of twenty four seven. Sports said rothlisberger appeared frustrated by sensational diving interception by slot corner. Antoine brooks dens. Eddie was just amazed and was complimenting. Mike hilton's heir apparent a larkin change in the course of a preseason in training camp folks but it seems like the steelers are giving that first shot at that slot cornerback to antoine brooks junior. Some people thought it might be james pierre. Some people thought it might be someone like marcus allen no antoine brooks junior is getting the first look and he is seems to be making the most out of its keep that a minds to file it away. It's only day one. I don't wanna make too much video out of this but still something. No worthy also tj. Watts new deal might. Tom was asked about that. And he said quote. I'm sure that process will run. Its course and we'll have something to announce That's interesting. I didn't expect a contract to be done before the season. But maybe it will. Ben rothlisberger took to the podium and he was asked about some of the off season in a narratives supposedly involving his ability and his physique etc and he said quote are things being said about me nationally and then with a smile said well. What's new ben rothlisberger. Understand what's being said about him folks. If you're someone that's sitting there thinking how does not know he knows and he is. Trust me he's motivated to go out and show people that he is still capable of getting the job done. Speaking of rothlisberger a lot of people are wondering will he be able to learn nat canada's offense. It is different. It is complex. No one really knows exactly what it's going to look like rothlisberger certainly does he was asked about how he's learning all the formations. The new verbiage play calls. I mean this guy's going into his eighteenth year in the national football league actually said that his daughter helped him make flash cards and he said quote. There's been some quizzes with a smile. Devon bush if you didn't read the article on behind steel curtain dot com. He was told that he's basically been fully cleared medically with his knee. That he won't be you know. Have any downtime. Before he's able to practice he should be given the green light right away. Zach banner also ahead of schedule. Zero steeler players will be starting camp on the pup list the physically unable to perform list. That is great news for the steelers to not have anyone. That's dealing with a major injury. Early on now kevin and didn't work today. He didn't practice today. Said he's dealing with something that something is not serious enough to put them on the publis. I wouldn't put too much stock into that something. That was interesting. That i thought of it. i was curious. Did the steelers know about vince. Williams thinking about retirement according to mark bali of the athletic. He said it sounds like the steelers. Had no idea that vince williams retiring until yesterday. That's really interesting to me. Really interesting to me. And so Maybe he didn't tell them maybe he didn't know i'm not saying it's his fault. I'm not saying that anyone is to blame but very interesting news there. If the steelers had no clue that vince williams was about to hang it. Up tomlin. Mike tomlin was asked about the new offense of line in he did not Splice words he said quote. We don't have the bar set too high. We were last in the league in rushing. We have nowhere to go but up with certain aspects of that. Yeah i hope that that's the way they view it as they can only go up but at the same time we hope that they they don't just move up a little bit. They actually thrive. That's that's the hope that is the hope. And then lastly in like. I said there wasn't a ton of news coming out of this first day of camp There are some steelers that will be wearing new numbers. Some people like the jersey. Some people want to go out and buy a bunch of jersey. so in case you're interested like new. Newly-acquired melvin ingram. Outside linebacker will wear number eight number eight this is. He's taking advantage that new. Nfl rule where linebackers are allowed to wear single digit numbers. He wore number. Eight trade turner. But we're never fifty one. That's really weird for me. When i think fifty one i think james farrior But still fifty one and yeah a buddy johnson. The rookie from texas am fourth round. Pick is also wearing number fifty one He's on the other side so something's gonna give but honestly if the rookie makes the team he will probably not be too attached to that number if trae turner wants it. We'll keep it that way. Kicker sam sloman. Who is basically a camp unless chris boswell gets hurt is gonna wear sixteen and also newly acquired offense attack. Oh chaz green is wearing number seventy four so for all you jersey fans out there. There's your jersey fixing all those new numbers the pittsburgh steelers. I wanna make this very clear. The pittsburgh steelers have not released. That i've seen any type of schedule for training camp when they're at latrobe. There is a clear cut. The players are working out this day this day off this day this day this day. Preseason game i have not seen anything like that. So i wanna be able to say. Check me tomorrow. For another training camp recap but if they give him the day off and there won't be a training camp recap so your best bet is to check out behind.

"Road. I think it was either tuesday or monday about how in the steelers are successful. Especially in the cower tomlin erez. It's always been the defense that carries the towards the defense. It carries the flag. Let's hope that is the case this season. But let's take a look at some numbers and no i'm not a numbers guy not a geeky guy. That's dave scofield. That's his show on thursday night. This is just looking at general numbers in before we get started with this. We're going to look at some twenty twenty numbers. There are some fans out there that say all jeff. You can't look at these numbers because of a different schedule this season. And there's a seventeen game and who knows about this the other listen. Here's the fact. What else are we supposed to look at. Two thousand nineteen two thousand eighteen. What are we supposed to. What am i supposed to look at here okay. So we're going to look at the last season the most up-to-date numbers that we have so far. Okay so for the sake of this argument. Let's just assume that the pittsburgh steelers offense in twenty twenty one duplicates itself in twenty twenty. I'm yet i'm slowly. I confuse myself. Let's say that in twenty twenty one this dealers basically have mere numbers to last season. Let's look at what those numbers were by the way. I'm not predicting this will happen. I'm just using this. As an example so if the steelers in terms of yardage they finished with five thousand three hundred fifty four yards which equated to three hundred and thirty four point six yards per game in terms of passing four thousand in three yards which averages out to two hundred and fifty point two yards per game rushing one thousand two hundred fifty one eighty four point four yards a game in points. They had four hundred sixteen total which averaged twenty six point zero points per game. So you look at those numbers and again. I'm not predicting that that's going to do. I do think they'll run the ball better. I think the passing should be about the same total yardage. Might be a little bit better. And i didn't even look at rankings because it doesn't matter i don't care what the kansas city chiefs frank last season. I'm only looking at the pittsburgh steelers. So when i'm looking at these numbers and looking at these numbers and i'm trying to figure out okay. What in the world's happening here. Let's say they stay the same looking at me. A struggling to run the ball effectively. Still having decent passing game scoring points twenty. Six points per game is pretty good. That's pretty good so let's get last season's defensive statistics and say where will this defense need to improve for them to really set the tone. That's what this is all about. This is about the defense having to set the tone for this twenty twenty one steelers team in being the unit. Says we have it. We've got it under control if the offense sputters it's okay. Think back to those legendary defenses of the early two thousands. You're talking about you. Know when james harrison troy apollo malu aaron smith james farrior could go down the entire roster defensive roster tell you all those players you know those players. How many times would this were there with the steelers. Winning games of final score of sixteen to ten. Yeah that's the type of performance. The steelers might need twenty twenty one. How many times did we see the steelers when a game fourteen to three or the defense almost pitched a shutout. They held on the opposition to three points. Yes i know when you look at the schedule. The steelers are paired up with. Afc west very good very good division the nfc north another pretty decent division. That's kind of uncertain at some certain anything about justin fields in chicago. And things like that. And matt stafford stafford gone in detroit. He's out in. La jared goff is inserted. No one knows what does are going to look like those teams still. It's the nfl seattle's going to be coming to pittsburgh it's a it's a good offense. The steelers defense is not going to have easy. Oh did i also forget to mention that they the bengals a job. Borough should have a better offense. Their offensive line is questionable. But they're going to better in terms of skill position. The baltimore ravens. We know that they're going to have a good offense with lamar jackson. They're gonna be able to run the football and things like that. And obviously the cleveland browns. Our in nick chub and kareem hunt and baker mayfield. It's not going to be easy but let's look at these numbers. At the pittsburgh steelers defense put up in twenty. Twenty in terms of yards surrendered. They surrendered four thousand eight hundred ninety three which averages out to three hundred five point eight yards per game in passing three thousand one hundred ten averages one hundred ninety four point four yards per game in rushing they surrendered one thousand seven hundred eighty three yards which adds to one hundred and eleven point four yards per game and then points. You have three hundred. Twelve which averages out to nineteen point five yards per game okay. So the numbers of the numbers from the twenty twenty steelers defense. We can't go back and change them. We've talked about them. Ad nauseam this entire offseason. But when i'm looking at these numbers. I have to ask myself. Where can they improve. Where can this defense ends. It's all about the defense. Where can they improve. I think there's plenty of spots for them to improve. In terms of passing defense the fact that they surrendered less than two hundred yards per game through. The air is great. I would not expect anything more if they can do that again. That's tremendous rushing defense. This is where i feel like. The steelers could tighten up a little bit. You're averaging one hundred and eleven point four yards per game. The one thing. When i loved watching the steelers defense and i still do but when i loved it the most when dick lebeau was the coordinator and he would always say we want to make offenses one dimensional. We want to dictate what they do in. That hasn't always been the case under keith butler. Sometimes they've given up a lot of rushing yards. And i understand that a lot of those rushing yards have been by big runs. You think back to the game sanders from the eagles last season where i think he had a seventy six yard jaunt. So it's a situation where they stop the run. Mc entire game and they gave up of huge backbreaking run. It really does change. Not only the game but it changes their averages as well so they could get under a hundred yards rushing dow would be tremendous. And then you look at points. Nineteen point five points per game. Nineteen point five points per game. It's under twenty in. That's great get it to around sixteen. Take a field goal off in now. You're in some elite as as a lead rarified air. We'll put it that way this dealers defense in. It's a lot to ask. Especially when they've lost but depre- mike helton steven nelson when you've lost those players. It is a tough ask to say you need to and get better. You need to get better i. It's it's gonna require a lot of players to step up. It's going to require a lot of players to elevate their game and to somehow some way find a way to make this defense truly truly great based on the fact that we don't know if the pittsburgh steelers will be an offensive team that can win you games. I hope i'm wrong. I hope they can but as of right now as we sit here. We don't know that for a fact what we do know for. A fact is this defense is going to be really really good. But can they be great. Can they be great. That's the question the steelers when they succeed they have a great defense. The steelers when they get to super bowls they had a great defense. The steelers when they win super bowls. They have a great defense. Will this defense be great. It's going to require players to step up their game. And i have five players that i think really need to step up their game. And we're gonna talk about that. We're going to talk about dwayne haskins situation coming up in the second half in a heart to heart stay tuned. We'll be right.

"Welcome back to the steelers retro show. I am brian athey davis. He is tony. Julius deaf man. I'm beating a dead horse. Aren't i anthony. Julius nephew tony julius. I'll take it ring to it now. I haven't really used that middle name most my life. Maybe it's gonna be my new thing. Maybe my signature. So i like it that said hey look down the street. You better watch out tony jones's coming exactly you don't mess with tony jolson especially on the internet. A lot of people don't realize tony. You're a lot nicer on the mike than you are on the keyboard exactly. I'm not even that. I mean it's all sports coni but you're doing your momma jokes solve sports. Really people take sports you seriously. I'm a lot nicer on the mike. Maybe i'll work on that in perfect my snarky persona on the mike. We'll see we'll see. I'm still early. You know what i think. Your articles are the absolute best in. That's one of the reasons that attracted me to wanting to do a show with you so you don't change tony and just like mc hammer would say. I'm gonna adapt his lyrics. He's dope on the keyboard and he's magic on the mic. Wow you are the man. I'm going to hire you as my agent. Pr guy fire become big. I'm telling you. I i'm telling you you're my posse. You're going to be my own man. I want to be like an entourage. I wanna be like e for you. Tony i'd want to be at least you're conciliator and if you become big thinking remember me. That's all that's him. I've got a lottery. Lists tony and if i ever win the lottery gonna play the lottery. But you're firmly on the lottery lists because you're my buddy. If i win the lottery. I gotta have fun and i'm to take people with me right you. I do people that bring you down at the end. You'll be on one of those Vice shows says we talked about hammer before hammer breath so many people from the neighborhood into a stage shows of the into his entourage and a guy would be standing there on the stage with his arms folded. And they're like what are you doing there like hammer tomio. Full my arms and stand here. And that's what i'm doing now. Hammer went broke from doing all that all those people were like. Screw you hammer. i'm out here. They use the poor guy like crazy. They weren't legitimate. Quit then right. Oh no yeah. They quit all right. This show is going off the rails in a fun fun way. Let's go back to the steelers. As they came out of the locker room with a first down ten to seven at this point to start the third quarter they started out at the twenty six and started moving the ball on the ground so the second year man rashard mendenhall and then nine while mike wallace tore off a run of six with fifteen yards on after a facemask penalty with a ball to minnesota something. You're in line tony. Don't have it right here okay. Soda territory. Ben converted a third and one at the eight with a personal foul on. Benny sapp tacked on not. I don't remember benny sapp was. He warns little brothers something. He's the acting like that on. Its play because they weren't headed out for the steelers thinking on his play when he committed that personal father was kind of a stupid from the eight. The drive stalled after sack in an incompletion to ward and homes lot jeff read old skippy your boy skippy tony. He salvaged the points by connecting on a twenty seven yard field goal. The steelers lead thirteen to seven with eleven. Oh nine remaining in the third tony. This is twice now that they should have been in for touchdowns and they stalled. They have settled for jeff. Reed points what are you making of this. Could they just not convert. Can they not finish. Certainly seemed like that early on and steelers defense was legendary back in those days. But you gotta take advantage of these reds and opportunities and that's you said this twice now that they had to settle for three seven alternately often comes back to bite you in the nfl indeed does nearly seven minutes later. The vikings road farms arm down the field with completions to rice harvest. Louis johnson and new folks who he facing a fourth and one at the steelers thirty five brad shoulders. His team gambled and won for the time. Being the hall of fame quarterback through over the middle to sydney rice for a gain of thirty four palmolive caught him. From behind the save the touchdown thank goodness for troy. Forty three or would have been right into the end zone where they're looking now at a first and goal at the one yard line but the steelers had a tough defense and they needed to step up on first down. Peterson was stuffed up the middle by kieran fox and potsy james farrior farms. Second down past rice was too high. On third and goal. Brent through to jim klein sasser and it was incomplete after being well covered by farrier instead of being victims of a goal. Line stand ryan. Longwell came on for an eighteen yard field goal. The score was now thirteen to ten steelers. The steelers were on the move again. After twenty two yards onto carries by mendenhall as the fourth quarter arrived on third and five from the steelers forty six san antonio took a short pass from big ben and pinball d- for forty five yards all the way down to the vikings nine. That was a thing of beauty. Wasn't tony it certainly was. I think people forget how granted counts in tuning homes. Really wasn't he was really a special talent and it's a shame things didn't work out for him as far as have going to have a legendary career but he was really special for them during this era and showed on this play to follow mendenhall..

"Baker Mayfield performance on me and I might have to plural eyes that on some level I know that they've had some winds and that they came in on a roll. But you know, he they have. I don't want to say that they won in spite of them this year, but they had not won because of him. That is for damn sure, And we have the first overall pick. You can't be along for the ride in winds as often as he is, And you certainly can't be an eyesore as he was yesterday in losses as he often is. So before we start cutting the nut, Let's get the word from the coach coach to fan ski on. Why'd you pull Baker? I just I don't want to see him get hit one more time, and that's put that on myself. When in this game No. One. We have to keep them clean, and we didn't do enough jobs so that that starts with me, obviously, and he's a very, very tough Player and I know he wants to fight, but it's a long season. We had a game next week, and I didn't feel like it was the right thing to put him back out. There knows these tough. I mean, he is He's grind there, and he's earned everything he's gotten so far. He was not handed the full tool box from the football gods on the conveyor belt. Got a lot of respect for Baker, but I mean, listen, Baker Mayfield has been playing football in the NFL now for a couple of years with a lot of talent, and he's not where he should be. No period. Well, let's also not forget He was playing another team just like Aaron Rodgers. We just talked about that has one of the top defense is in the National Football League. The Pittsburgh Steelers are becoming vicious and how they play defense. It almost reminds you You know those early 2000 years when they were just dominant on on that side of the ball with my buddy James Farrior, my teammate from UVA and James Harrison. And although I mean Troy Polamalu, who he had on a couple of weeks ago or last week I mean, those guys get after the football, they turn you over on. They punish you, man. I mean, T. J. Watt is one of the best pass rushes and football as is but the pre and Steven to it on the inside of these dudes get after you and Baker Mayfield didn't know what to do with it now regularly on a healthy day. Let's not let's not discount the fact that he is beat up. We saw him get hit that one time. I think it was right before ultimately got taken out, and he just you could tell his ribs were in excruciating pain. He couldn't get off the ground after he got after he got slammed down, and that's what coach to fancy was alluding to the job was Keep your quarterback clean. Don't won't let him get hit, right?.

"I have to do when the guy is lower than. Waleed. and his point was. When the guy is lower than wail bleep who controls the situation. I do. I control the situation because now he doesn't have a hefty signing bonus. Now, he doesn't have A. He doesn't have a guarantee like if I'm bringing them in if I'm buying low on him. I've got all the upside potential upside. And control the situation in the more. I. Thought About that discussion. The more I realized that's exactly what build us. Buys low bought. Low on Randy Moss about low on Corey Dillon, bought low Albert, hanes. Worth about low on shadow Cinco. Rarely, buy low on PEOP- or buys high on people. You buys low on people into this coach kind of explained to me is like. We got a lot better. Wants that happen because what ended up happening was we take these risks and sometimes they work sometimes they did. But that guy had to ingratiate himself into the Locker Room? He wasn't coming into the locker room in a place where you could screw things up. He was coming into the locker room in a place where he had to prove himself to everybody else and not the other way around. And he knew he had to show who he. To. The. Coaching staff in a positive way or he'd be gone, and so I just thought it was a really interesting way to look at it where. My guess is Pete Carroll would look at it that way. While I. Guess I would say this that Moyano. Albert. We- We thought we had to and. He Uh. became too much of a problem. Key difference key difference key difference is. Set to make ten million bucks in New England. And I think money is power in the NFL. Already collected a signing bonus and I just think like in a lot of these cases, some vacant come down to among my last shot I. Sat out there forever. I'm not saying it will work. I'm just saying I think Seattle a team like Seattle can look at this and say. Yeah like let's kick. The tires is bring him in even now. You say like let's bring him in now and given three work three weeks to make it work, and then he's gotTa go away because they'll be suspended, but we'll get like three week trial. and. If we think he's got it lined up. Okay. Maybe and I like look like the moral questions obviously different and like if you've got a moral issue with bringing men right that you know what I mean, that's totally fair. But I do think that there is a football. There's a logical football reason why you might do it and quickly it's gotta be the right situation the right coach. Coach, Doug Marrone, not convincing Jacksonville to bring this guy in because they're going to make a decision on him maybe at the end of the year. But if you're entrenched and you got a nice long term contract, maybe that is a hill, you would be willing to die on because the because the talent is so good i. say good luck to you. Okay. Our final topic, my final takeaway. So the steelers I guess more specifically Ben Himself revealed that he had three tore tendons in his elbow. Last which sounds painful and I, guess, he had said that are the team had said that like they couldn't find a previous case of it and a quarterback. He's lost weight You know to be fair I? Mean we we we poke. Fun. At. Him and everything else. He actually did look good. He looks like he's in good shape. Gresh I like I, think the steelers are sort of like lying in the weeds and this way wanted me this last topic because that's that's that's your squad, right? They're sort of lying in the weeds is like a team that could be a thirteen and three or fourteen, and two, and here's the reason why wo- Tomlin kept them pretty level last year with a horrific quarterback situation and I just think like a team goes through that and I think that there's a long-term benefit for having gone through that where the team had become reliant on Ben over the years, maybe different parts of the team realize. We're pretty good. Like the offensive line, the receivers are getting like, I. Think. You've got some promise in the receiver group. Now jus use misusers going to have to break come back around and Deontay Johnson's going to have to develop? And then that defense, the defense has been bad for a long time. And that was a really good group last year. Now, you got promising young guys, TJ Watt. Minka Fitzpatrick and Devon Bush. Who should get better I thought it was awful the time and I mean they look brilliant. Now because not only did they get Minka in their system for what was it? Thirteen twelve games last year whatever the NAR? Whatever the number out to be. He is now that guy on the back end. Bert that helps give them the identity that they lost when Paul Malu left, and they got him, he was in the middle of the second year of his rookie contract. have. Cheap for the next couple years to I just really like where the steelers are organizationally. Developing talent for a long long time. But I think it's fair to say that there was a lull there on. Defense. You know really coming out of the polymer. Taylor. The Ryan Clark. Dad. That group. James. Farrior like that? That whole? Aaron Smith That Group Amar. Woodley. I keep going like that group. That was a really really good defense. They won two super bowls that defense. They never really got it back to that level and I do feel like that defense has got a shot now to close to where that group was..

"Why? It didn't work out, you know? Toys. What Lo? Let's tow put it into context. The N B A. If you have one really, really special player in the MBA. That's a difference of making the playoffs or, you know, a 20 win season, right? And you condemn, kind of quantify how much Sales were coming in because of this once very special player, and then you make the playoffs and you know the hype around that. It's It's not the same in the NFL. You can have one very special player. What if they just think back to our O? If you remember, 05 season when Chad got hurt, everyone heard it was the injury plagued season, so it didn't matter how special Some of the players were on the team. The team itself just wasn't good. And so you take the mentality if you're a GM, and I can understand that mentality is that they go to GM president owner Where you say, Look, we really want this guy. But we don't need him in the N B. A. It's different if you have a really special player LeBron James, where we need that player. Just ask the Cleveland Cavaliers. So there is always going to be that fine line Where the players really, really good. You know, you look at your mall Adams one of best seasonally, really, really good. But that just don't needem. That's just support the unfortunate reality of it. And so I think that's just what happened. I was a very good player. You know, I had a lot of fun a lot of success, but the judge didn't need me. And to that point there was more value in trading me then in keeping me And of course you go to the Saints, of course, and you win a Super Bowl with saints. You know, nine, and it's just typical of the Jets C This is I understand where you're coming from John. But you gotta understand where a guy jet fan. I mean, Jeff Francis, 1965. Andi have a David sniff the Super Bowl in 52 years now, and I am so sick and tired. Off seeing us bringing guys guys like you guys like Darrelle Revis guys like James Farrior guys like Keyshawn Johnson. I've only got a good trade Keyshawn Johnson role at Who, you know, we develop these guys. And then for whatever reason they don't want to pay him. There's an issue. Whatever the reason, maybe they wind up going somewhere else. And they're hosted a Super Bowl trophy with somebody else. It makes me delirious. Well, I would really tell you this. Or some of the players that you name. Just think about the pills the time or the season that right before they got traded. So you think about the season right before I got traded for 12 hours, and I are right. You again? Yeah. Farrier think that they knew what they were, like. Six in 10. Something like that. Um Jamal Adams came off. Sad or not him as a player, but you know, there's 15 7 and nine, right right didn't have a lot of success. And so what happens is, if you have, if you look at some of these old school and gets a kind of, you know, really football organizations like Pittsburgh, I was used. Pittsburgh has a great example of one of the best. They're one of the best because They give their players and coaches time you've got to give them time, and that means that you're gonna have to suffer through 796 in 10 or 12 season. And still not overreacting. When I mean by overreact, it's not that it's ah, poor decision. It may be a rushed decision, right if someone they love Darrelle Revis. We need to keep him because Darryl Revis He's going to be a a mainstay for the next generation. Literally. The next generation is going to be a mainstay 10 12 years, we will never have to worry about that position. So let's figure out how to keep him and work around him and that'll take time..

"Shouts out to you. It is an all request Wednesday. And we got a request for the teriyaki Boyz Tokyo drift off arrages insta- along with the shoutout to you. Tommy, I don't know why he puts those two together. But he does. So so those to you that's what you could do on an all request Wednesday could kind of do whatever you want. You could sign a new deal. If you want to you could retain we got what have we got? Ben roethlisberger. And the Steelers have a reportedly come to terms on a new deal that will keep in Rothlisberger. The Steelers quarterback through the twenty twenty one season. No details have been announced he was going into the final year of his deal. So that they gave him a couple of more year to year deal. Yeah. Probably not a huge surprise. That's a it's a two year deal, which is really probably a year to year deal. You know, they got him this year. It'll get him in twenty in. And if he feels good looks good they'll get him in twenty one. I mean, they basically have been saying all offseason that he's the guy running the team anyway. So no big surprise that they weren't going to go into a lame duck season, especially with everybody that you just jettison still Chirpin. Yeah. Yeah. Everybody should listen to Ben these these these guys don't know what they're doing. Yeah. But. Two thousand eight been awhile. It's been a minute. Deputy Super Bowls are hard to come by. Apparently, they they've struggled within the division to to just pull away with division. Like they've done in the past. Yeah, they just I don't know. I mean, I'm leaving. I'm bills not there anymore. A B's not there anymore. Let's see how life is without those guys. There's no Jayme Harrison on defense. There's there's no fairy James Farrior been gone off the team and they're coming into a season where they didn't make the playoffs. This is. Exactly. Make the playoffs with certain way about Mike Tomlin as a head coach. So it's it's going to be an interesting year for the Steelers at nine hundred eighty nine make the playoffs the slid out of the playoffs. They which was even worse. What else Lipson slides Chelsea do? We got a major announcement coming up in just a moment after keys headline which is presented by sprint. Cocktail doodle..

"You bring younger guys in young character guys, again, what a bunch of others, and then they establish their their role in the locker room, and then everybody follows them. And that's how you create a the culture you want. I think it's that's how it's gonna have to happen. I mean, most people will tell you, it's it's it's more of the players that set the tone in the locker room than the coach, you know, that they're they're holding each other accountable. So I think that's that's gonna be a natural progression. I think in the next couple of years. I think it's it's it's something we can all look forward. You who's the one player that you think that they can fuck from the past. That would really help us Keam inside the locker room. I'm gonna guy in mind, and I'm gonna throw them out back. Actor fiction guy like Hines ward factor fixing Tony to go ahead and stabilize this author. Yeah. I think I mean he was really good at honing teammates countable. I'm gonna go Berra's. Hey, you need study the playbook. You know? So, you know, he's definitely he he never minced words when it came to to telling his teammates, but they had to do in. He's all he led, by example. He led with his, you know, vocally. So yeah, I think he he would be a great mentor in that locker and definitely somebody. I don't think they could they could go wrong because he was all about winning. And he was all about doing doing it the right way. Who do you think is the most let's say the? The. Joe saving Bill cower years in the Mike Tomlin dayers post. Chef who do you think is the most respected Pittsburgh Steeler of that era? So let's see since nineteen I need to you know, walking room. Of course, we threw a Hines ward there who else throw in as the most respected room figures. I say, honestly, it's not your own better. It would have to be. I think errands Aaron Smith. I mean, everybody universally loved that guy. I mean, they they would run through brick wall for him. So I think it's it's either better Smith, and I'm actually towards Aaron Smith. I think he was he was universally loved by everybody. You know, I love that. I think that is a great call right there. You know, definitely a big one in that time. I know what let me throw the name. But. That might be overlooked as much just means even start here, but he finished here and finished here. In a big way. I think James barrier was a huge loss of guy. Yeah. Actually, you mentioned he wasn't kind of when Joey porter in wondering who's gonna be vocal leader? And the guy who got him reading on the silent, and the tunnels turned that was you think maybe Larry Ford or somebody like that. It was James Farrior. He was the one, you know, you know, it's a five start massive. We're in it. You know, you always hear that sound bite. So yeah, that's a good one. I mean, there are a lot of them. They were definitely a lot of them. I think that's that was a great. That was a great air. It really was a great time to be a Steeler fan. I you know, one of my favorites dealers. I actually have remember fifty one. But it right after they won the super law and had the symbol of forty three. Mojo on it packs since one of my one of my guys that so where we're talking about super forty three. Let's get back to Super Bowl fifty three. We talked a lot about feelers. And we talk about how the Steelers would have actually won that game could have scored more points. We definitely think that but how many interceptions?.

"Guys like Morgan Burnett who's already asked to be traded because he doesn't wanna play dime. Linebacker. You. Need stars go out and spend some money. And get some stars. How about move up in the draft leverage yourself leverage extra picks move up the draft. Get aggressive try to get into top fifteen top ten get a guy there. Just get a Gresley of just change it up. You know, if they're asking Tomlin to get a challenge coach, which is well-needed didn't change it up with the Steelers are doing. That's why said, yeah. Said it the Steelers way is broken is because they keep trying to do this this way that they think is tried and true when the patriots played in eight straight AFC championships Macy's, you know, clearly this dealer way is broken when another team is been eight straight AFC championships and they're trying to go to their third consecutive Super Bowl. So it's not only time for the coaching staff to do some things differently sodas the front office and sodas ownership in the way, they have to approach. Winning. You gotta do everything and be aggressive at it. Yeah. No, you're right. But I guess by question is when was the last one out now granted the Steelers haven't always had the salary cap space. But what was the last time? They actually went out and got a big name player that panned out in free agency. Can you think of one? Stew Staley he pays out. He paid two games as someone say, I know that someone pricey will James James Farrior. They got him in free agency. Wasn't. He wasn't a superstar. Then the jets led him on for reasons. Some we'll say Ryan Clark. Ryan Clark was another guy that was on the he's on the scrapheap. Did they find these gems sometimes? And so I I don't know, man. I I'm trying to think of the last time those the big free agent move really in the division even that turned out to really pay dividends. I mean, you who's been more aggressive than people might think if Rainsy has been the ravens. Ravens have been very aggressive. You know, they went out and got those receivers nag granted flacco could throw the ball when he was in there and Lamar Jackson runs more than he throws. But they they went out and got Tony Jefferson. They got Eric Weddell. And so I guess maybe I'd answer. My question there. There are teams in the division that are doing it. I just don't know. Okay. So what are you gonna target? I if there's a if there's one that you say, look, we don't wanna draft pick. Here we need experience. What positions at inside linebacker. I'll give you an example, they need to aggressively. Go after CJ Moseley if he becomes available naked. They could go could CJ Moseley they need to go. Try to get CJ Moseley. You get better on defense and you weaken. The ravens go get them out. My gosh, could do that would be an that would rock Silmi different boats. Yeah. I mean, I guess that's gotta do. The funny thing is is you think about was it two or three years ago? When as we're watching right now Dont'a Hightower the Steelers very aggressive going after him, and they were one of two teams in the end of going back to the patriots. But so I guess maybe that's something they need to do. There's just not used to this situation, in my opinion, where you know, they're just not used to having to go out or they're not used to having the salary f- space team, go out and bake it. He moves. So I don't know. I agree with you know. Sounds like what just like not being used to dating the ten. I'm not used to dating the ten. I just feel kind of comfortable he so attractive, man. She's just makes me feel nervous to get over it..

"And there were a group of men James Farrior and Larry foot, and Chris Hoke, and Smith and keys, and Paula Malu and Hines ward men who did their job who showed up were driven who cared so much and realized how fun it was to play the game of football that didn't need any. They didn't any strict structure they were going to be there. They have that self discipline. And when Mike Tomlin came in. He had this group of veterans that didn't need to be for lack of a better word. Police didn't need to be treated like children and be told. Okay. It's not negotiable that you show up to a walk through. I mean, can you can you imagine any of those men just not showing up to a through and full L expecting? There would be no repercussions. If they didn't show up for walk through. And then the organization changed a little bit. And there there weren't leaders like that to kind of keep the younger guys in line. And there's a lot of the neighboring Peter. I mean, it's probably just like with your kids. If you let your daughter skip curfew five days in a row, should you really be surprised at on the six day, she's curfew. It's an excellent point. I think the one thing I've wondered about I wonder about the the effect of the death of Dan Rooney on the team on the structure of the team and on situations like this, and I'm not saying that no situation like this ever happened under Chuck Noll's watcher. I it. I mean, I don't think it would it was as severe. You know as a star going AWOL and being incommunicative non-communicative before the game. But I'm sure things happen. I I don't seem to remember. I think a lot of these things have happened post, Dan, Rooney, I think Dan, Rooney was e- both in the locker room and in the front office. And with the coaches highly highly respected in terms of he he didn't really have to he didn't have to display a huge amount of discipline, or or or you know, meet out a huge amount of discipline. He people just knew that you don't do this with the Steelers. And again, I'm not faulting art Rooney the second now, obviously because his dad died, and he's not his father anything like that. But I think the death of Dan Rooney is a major factor in this. That's not a minority opinion. Peter that's something that's been heard. I mean, I've heard that many a time from people within the organization and outside the organization, and as you're saying aren't really is a good, man. This is not at all to say anything other than that. But everybody has a different management style. Everybody has different expectations there, there were different feelings about who you want to disappoint and who you want to please that that's all part of this. But go back to having respect for people and. If you truly respect someone, and it's the phone call thing, Peter that just blows my mind. I don't understand that at all this man, Mike Tomlin has had Antonio Brown's back from the start from the time that he made him a six round pick because let's not make any bones about this. Mike, Mike Tomlin and Kevin. Colbert says Jewish general manager working up Luke concert together, they are aligned and picks are made by consensus with the two of them. So Mike Tomlin is responsible for intoning Brown coming to the Steelers as a six round pick. My palm Lynn is the man who helped make sure that when my when Mike Wallace held out. It was Antonio Brown who got a long term contract. Mike Tomlin is the man who after an Tonio Brown acted the fool and the Kansas City locker room made sure that Antonio Brown got the richest contract in the history of the NFL for a wide receiver. And then look at just this year alone. Okay. So they were meltdowns. There was a throne of a water cooler. There was a lot of nonsense year ago. My Tomlin coverage for Antonio Brown. But then this year going back to OTA's when and let me say this. I'm jumping around a little bit Peter. But let me preface this with this and Tonio Brown works harder than any other athlete. I've ever been around in my entire life Antonio Brown. Okay. Antonio brown. Also, I believe and you have worked fiercer than they. But I believe gets more out of what he was given than any other athlete..
