Mnuchin says economy is recovering but ‘more work’ is needed
"Pressed by Democrats, too quickly negotiate a new Corona virus relief package. The Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, says the administration does remain willing to work on a bipartisan agreement to help small businesses the unemployed Children in schools. Weapon, Yushin said Democratic leaders in Congress are holding it up with hardened positions at a hearing by the House Select subcommittee on the Corona virus crisis. Mnuchin made the case that the economy's recovery is strengthened in recent weeks, citing improved consumer spending, growth in manufacturing and a rebounding housing market. He claimed that it's the failure of some states to reopen activity that's holding back the economy. But Democrats insisted that dire economic conditions persist for many millions of Americans. You are now facing addiction, debt hunger. So, said the panel's chair representative James Clyburn of South Carolina, who warned of more layoffs coming Especially from states and cities whose budgets have been busted by dealing with the economic impacts of the Corona virus crisis. Subcommittees. Democratic staff, meanwhile, said it is identified lapses pointed to possible fraud and abuse in a signature piece of the administration's relief effort. The 660 Billion dollar plus small business loan program, including more than a billion awarded to businesses that received multiple loans. The staff investigators said in a report that a lack of government oversight and accountability for the program may have led to billions of dollars being diverted to fraud, waste and abuse rather than reaching small businesses Truly in need. With bipartisan agreement, Congress enacted an unprecedented $2.3 trillion pandemic rescue package in March. Now the Trump Administration and top congressional Democrats have been In a months long stalemate over new relief legislation.

COVID-19 relief bill negotiations fall apart as lawmakers remain divided
"Congressional leaders, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi met with the trump administration today for what we think was an eleventh round of face-to-face negotiations on another covid relief package for Americans who are out of work or otherwise up against it in the seventh full blown month of this pandemic Democrats offered to knock about a trillion dollars off of their relief bill, which should otherwise been pegged at three point four, trillion, the White House apparently said no to that offer. Many. The deadlines to replenish or extend the relief programs that Congress has passed in the past. Those have already come and gone deadline to continue paying the extra six hundred bucks and unemployment benefits that tens of millions of Americans have been relying on since they've been out of work that deadline came and went July thirty first. The deadline to extend the ban on people across the country that passed on July twenty fourth now as many as twelve million people or risk of losing their homes if they don't get help. Technically the paycheck protection program the Federal Loan Program to try to keep small businesses afloat. Technically, that program is still alive that program doesn't expire until tomorrow, but it does matter tomorrow. With all these federal leaf relief programs either collapsing on the verge of collapsing the trump administration is saying no to the Democrats compromise offer they've been making vague noises about the president trying to do some of these things by executive order the president talked about that tonight at his golf club in Bedminster but then quickly pivoted to spending the next half an hour remarks basically holding a very small campaign rally. Left unsaid at all was how he intends to muster the authority to try to do any of this single handedly since it's congress, not the president. That holds the power of the purse tick tock though in terms of how much Americans need relief right now, there's no end to this pandemic insight. The reason these things are expiring is because when they initially past people thought this would be over by now. It's nowhere near over Americans are suffering just as much as they were when these things were passed in the first place. How's this going to resolve? Joining us now is the Great James Clyburn South Carolina Congressman Chair of the House Select Committee Oversees Virus Relief Funds Congressman Clyburn. It's really nice to see you here. Tonight it's been too long since you've been here on the show I really appreciate you making time to be here. Thank you very much. Can you just give us your overview perspective on what you think is going to happen whether you think that these programs that so many Americans have been counting on will get extended what kind of lapse that will be looking at between those programs initially expiring and them getting re upped when ultimately some deal hopefully, it's worked out. I think we. WORKED OUT WE'LL be the tremendous amid of the week. Weekend. We will have. Some politicians tomorrow I think we're getting close to something happening. That will be beneficial to everybody. When the president talks about doing some of these things by executive order, I feel like I'm going back to my school house rock it's just I'm just a bill kind of basics about how the different branches of government work I mean the one thing the president doesn't have is the power of the purse when he says that he can do some of these things just by signing. An executive order when we're talking about, you know sending money to people weren't talking about an unemployment benefits boost when we're talking about changes around taxes that he's talking about, it doesn't seem to me that he has the power to do any of that as as president. But yet, the White House seems to think that that's a that's another way to get at the relief that's needed. The purchasing is saying that there is no congress, the acid deal with no people the he has to listen to He says these things up think as always throwing something up on the wall to see if it was. I think he knows better than this. The general owners that he issues have gone to court time and time again and they've been thrown back into his face as appointed time. I think he's get the message from the Courts as well. But keep working and we'll come to some agreement I. Wish that Mr McConnell or in the room so that we can get the legislative bodies together but he seems to have. Turned over to the White House, but we'll get something. You you sound confidence and that. Is booming to me because I feel like you're pretty clear eyed observer about what is capable what what Capitol Hill is capable of doing just ask what you would say to Americans right now who are really scared about not just the health aspects of this but the economic aspects of this I mean so many people that I know just in my personal life with their small business owners or whether they are employees of public or private entities. people are worried about whether or not the the economic. Blow that's been dealt to individual families into our country. Right now is something that we're going to recover from in the long run. How do you? How do you see that and? How do you think the government has done in terms of trying to fix some of these these wounds? People are worried and. Something, I'm worried. He got a really a pandemic, but then a pandemic here. When you really look at it they got a big healthcare crisis. They got an economic crisis, and as we focused on trying to do something about the economic crisis, the fact of the matter which are not yet it saw without solving this healthcare crisis. So it's a double whammy here. We have to try to operate knowing full well that you cannot operate within the silo here

Trump Wants to Ban TikTok, NASA-SpaceX Mission Success, & Unemployment Benefits Expire - Monday, August 3rd
"It's Monday August third president trump wants to ban TIKTOK. Info on the NASA spacex mission success plus unemployment benefits have expired why trump's team is interested in Biden's VP pick and more. Welcome to Rob Song, podcast where I bring you the latest Progressive News and politics and ten minutes or less I'm Robert Cunningham thank you for tuning in. Let's get informed. So president trump announced on Friday night that he wants to ban Tiktok Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that trump would be making an announcement on these matters in the coming days he said this on Fox News Sunday morning futures where he also said that Tiktok, the Chinese owned short form video APP needs to be taken down via executive action in addition to Tiktok. Mike. POMPEO. Pointed to we chat, which is a Chinese messaging APP saying that both of these are feeding data directly to the. Chinese Communist Party quote for a long time a long time. The United States just said well goodness if we're having fun with it or if a company can make money off of it, we're going to permit that to happen president trump said enough going on the secretary of state added and we are going to fix it and so he will take action in the coming days with respect to a broad array of national security risks that are presented by software that connected to the Chinese Communist Party. Microsoft has emerged as wanting to potentially by all US operations of tiktok accents reports that trump does have a deal on his desk where Microsoft would lead acquisition of the US operations of six talk and Microsoft seems to believe that it's possible that a total separation can happen from tiktok parent company by Dance. It's important for you to understand that presidents normally can't just order a ban on individual companies like this but the fact that Tiktok has a foreign owner allows the Treasury Department to have broad. Authority over it. Now, at this point, it's unclear whether trump is going to allow Microsoft to buy it or if trump is just going to push for an all out ban, we don't know. But what we do know is that this is super weird coming just months before an election six does have one hundred, million US users, and so it is rather strange move it could alienate some I mean granted I don't know if it would make much of a difference, but it just seemed strange. NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Bankin are safely on earth after a historic flight to and from the International Space Station provided by SPACEX Axios says on Saturday afternoon both astronaut splashdown into the Gulf of Mexico after about two forty, eight PM eastern time a space x vessel was able to recover both astronauts from their crew, dragon? Capsule. Hurley in bank in two month mission was the first time that people have been launched into orbit from the United States. The end of the space shuttle. Program in twenty eleven. This new move of partnering for Space Exploration, with private companies can allow NASA to act more of like a buyer instead of a provider of these services now and will free up NASA's budget to focus on things like getting people to the moon and eventually other planets in the future. In fact, NASA and SPACEX already have another trip planned this time for six months with multiple. NASA. Going up to the International Space Station, this will take place around late. September. So be on the lookout. Additional unemployment benefits of six hundred dollars per week expired on Friday July thirty first and reportedly the White House Senate. Republicans and Democrats are all know we're closer to a deal? Apparently, all sides are on board though for another twelve, hundred dollar check like was done with the cares act earlier this year the main point of disagreement is the additional unemployment benefits six hundred dollars extra. A month is what people have been receiving since the cares act was passed Democrats want to continue at that rate while Republicans want to. Bring that down to two hundred additional dollars per week while eventually moving holy to seventy percent of lost wages Republicans additionally wanted to get a one week extension on the six hundred dollars per week of additional benefits passed quickly. But the Democrats are refusing because they think that the Republicans are just GonNa. Use It as just a quick win and move on. But the Democrats are saying that they want a full robust bill. Now, the Democrats have proposed a three trillion dollar deal while the Republicans are looking to pass. A one trillion dollar deal, and as of yesterday junk Schumer the Senate Minority leader said that there were significant divisions remaining but good progress is being made quote. We made good progress. There are lots of things we are still divided on and we're not close to an agreement yet, but we are making good progress and I'm hopeful that we can get to an agreement. Now they're going to resume talks today. Okay. But do not be fooled. The Republicans are trying to place the onus here on Democrats but Democrats came. Up with a bill back in May the bill back in May like I said had a three trillion dollar price tag. It was approved by the House but then has not been voted on in the Senate and Senate Republicans want to have a one trillion dollar bill that does not do nearly enough in my opinion. So but as of right now you know who's GonNa Suffer America, the American people that are unemployed we just had on Thursday. One of the worse GDP records for quarter ever if not the worst. The percentage of GDP lost was close to thirty three percent. I hope we get a deal soon things are super hard to pass in Washington obviously, and I'm glad that the Democrats are sticking their feet in and trying to get this thing passed the Democrats are not perfect and I fear that they're going to cave too much here. But we've got to get something done because there is an eviction crisis looming we need to renew the moratorium on fictions. Now CNBC just posted a study recently that twenty two to fifty nine percent depending on the state that you live in of renters may be facing eviction as a result of the corona virus economic circumstances these numbers are horrifying and I'm sure this isn't the last time you'll be hearing about it. Trump's campaign paused ads over the weekend, which is really weird because they wanted to rebrand their messaging and new ads launching today are going to be depicting Joe Biden as a puppet of the radical left. This comes from two senior campaign officials but the most recent internal polls show that the puppet of the left's attack on Biden is going to resonate with voters and speaking personally in someone who lives in a very heavy trump territory. The this is the talking point that I've heard Oh Biden's not the problem it's. Going to be the VP you have to look out for as if Kamla Harrison. Some sort of crazy radical assuming he chooses someone like her speaking of the VP spot trump's campaign is very interested in that because the quote unquote radical left thing that they're going to be using their ads is a placeholder for whoever Joe Biden ends up picking. By the way, we will learn who Joe Biden is going to pick around on tenth multiple sources have suggested he said now he pushed back his self imposed deadline from. The first week of August to the second week and one source has said that it's going to be August tenth now. So be on the lookout here. No matter who Joe Biden picks. I think that Joe Biden is well-positioned. Of course, we all have to go out and vote that. This is not a matter of that we have to vote even if we live in California or Massachusetts or Oklahoma Even for God's sake, we have to vote for Joe Biden, but it doesn't really matter as much who he picks. Think this go around because trump's campaign is reportedly very upset that Biden doesn't have the unfavorability rating that Hillary Clinton did in two, thousand, sixteen, all of this trump at drama gotta be Biden's campaign to respond Andrew Bates. Director of rapid response said quote the American people know Joe Biden and after seven consecutive months of failed leadership during the worst possible health crisis in generations they know that our nation's capacity to join the rest of the world beating back cove nineteen has been crippled by one overriding burden donald trump. Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina said on Sunday that he believes trump is trying to put a cloud over the election and that he does not plan to leave office. If he loses Clyburn told CNN that the American people had better wake up to trump and he compared trump to Mussalini and said Russian President Vladimir Putin is akin to Hitler further representative Clyburn said quote I don't think he plans to leave the White House. He doesn't plan to have fair unfettered elections I believe that he plans to install. Himself in some kind of emergency way to continue to hold office. Now, all of this is to say everything that Clyburn is saying here means that we have to so overwhelmed the vote that trump cannot cheat. We have to force him out of office because on January twentieth at noon no matter how hard trump tries he will not be the president if we overwhelmed the vote and like Joe. Biden. So that's what we have to do. If you need help getting registered in your state, go to vote Dot

What's next for Joe Biden after Super Tuesday?
"Can be twenty twenty on WTOP what a super Tuesday night it was this week for Joe Biden who captures super Tuesday victories across the south with strong support from African Americans in Alabama North Carolina and Virginia he also won Elizabeth Warren's home state of Massachusetts and scored a few upsets along the way beating Bernie Sanders and delegate rich Texas this morning USA today's Washington bureau chief Susan page on Joe Biden super Tuesday winds on how congressman James Clyburn is endorsement recently gave Joe a big big boost remarkable how powerful that endorsement proved to be for Joe Biden any job Jim Clyburn once in a blighted ministration I think you could probably get but there was another force at work here and that was the collective decision by the democratic establishment
Bernie Sanders is coming in hot to the South Carolina primary
"The last presidential primary before super Tuesday could be a major deciding factor in the future of the presidential race John Lawrence reports former vice president Joe Biden call South Carolina his fire wall I don't know why yes South Carolina looks favorable for Biden he got an endorsement from representative James Clyburn this week and in the polls he's leading current National Front runner senator Bernie Sanders won all of these serious things we gotta do is make sure that we defeat the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country Donald Trump

And so I thought it was important for me. Brennan Emily into the conversations. Because you're correct. If she were here she would have been standing with me and she would have been. She wouldn't have said a word but you could tell from her look and the way she would embrace joe what she was feeling so this day was as much for as was for how children and our grandchildren. Carson There there's a new ad out in South Carolina put out by the trump campaign a trump super PAC Using audio of Barack Obama that they have stolen from the audio recording of his old book. And they're trying to use sound from that book as if it was directed as a negative comment about Joe Biden. Did you expect this kind of really crazy last minute? "Now it's time for the last word with Lawrence O'Donnell ritual and at the end of that press coverage tonight Alex as our did a very good job of insisting that he's very happy that Mike Pence is now kind of on top of this because he insisted that Mike Pence can help make all of these various departments of government work. Which would be true if Mike Pence is actually good at that and we're not aware of any evidence that indicates that it is nice that Mike Pence has a job. I mean unlike other vice presidents. He hasn't been given an obvious thing to do in this administration. This is kind of the first thing they've given him in year. Four of the trump administration. I am comforted by the fact that Mike Pence does appear to operate kind of a normal staffing situation and maybe like a normal sort of policy process. At least he appears to have staffers that he doesn't fire every three days. The president does but the idea that this is something that he serve uniquely suited to and then Alex are didn't even know about the announcement until he stepped up to the podium and heard it doesn't inspire confidence. President Obama of course gave that job came to the Ebola crisis he gave. What is now the Mike Pence job to Ron Clain? Ron Klein is gonNA join US tonight with his reaction excites. How the government's handling excellent. Well thank you Rachel. Thanks Rosanna. Arquette will join US tonight. Harvey Weinstein is awaiting sentencing on a rape conviction in New York before facing trial on other rape charges in Los Angeles. Thanks in part to Rosanna. Arquette who did not testify against Harvey Weinstein but didn't tell her story about Harvey Weinstein in that first week that the stories were emerging. She told her story to Ronan Farrow. Who published it in the New Yorker two and a half years ago and that forced prosecutors in New York and Los Angeles take the accusations against Harvey Weinstein seriously. Rosanna arquette was one of the most famous actresses who came forward and in fame obsessed country in the fame obsessed town of Los Angeles. The fame of the actresses did in fact add weight to the charges. Rosanna arquette will join us at the end of this hour with her reaction to what she thought was she was never gonNa see everyone's convicted of rape and sexual assault charges. But first we begin with the presidential campaign in the final days before the South Carolina primary on Saturday people to judge deleted a tweet yesterday mocking quote. Marsteller for the revolutionary politics of the one thousand nine hundred sixty s presumably. He booted judge who was born in one thousand nine hundred eighty two deleted that tweet after someone told him that. The revolutionary politics of the nineteen sixties represents the single most honorable most important and most dangerous period protests in the twentieth century. People were being killed them because they participated in civil rights protests. People were being killed because they helped black people registered to vote in the south people were being killed for protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State University in Ohio and in nineteen sixty eight at the historically Black College of South Carolina state the highway patrol shot and killed three students and wounded twenty seven and one of the most horrific reactions to protest by law enforcement in that very brave period of the nineteen sixty s and the nineteen seventies. That people to judge now realizes he should not mock James Clyburn wants to South Carolina. State where he met his wife. Emily in one thousand nine hundred. Seventy eight didn't meet her on the campus. He met her in jail and he told that story. Today we met soccer stays campus Come March fifteenth sixty years ago. I'll always remember that day because that was the first day that I was arrested and I met her in jail on that day about eighteen months later we were married off. Stay marriage for fifty eight years. We talked about this date that we love so much. I remember to tell you about her. Experiences walked in two and a half miles to school every morning. Joe Biden has 18-point lead in South Carolina, new poll shows
"But we begin at this hour for with your update from South Carolina now everyone including me sort of precipitously declare Joe Biden's campaign debt that's because he finished horribly and I will finish horribly in New Hampshire barely finish second in Nevada and so the the sort of going wisdom was that he was gonna collapse in South Carolina as well there's a new polling data out and it's showing that maybe his bat on that South Carolina firewall maybe he wasn't entirely wrong there two new polls out today one is from East Carolina University initialed by number eight thirty one percent to twenty three percent for Bernie Sanders and a second poll from Clemson University that shows a Biden up eighteen percent eighteen percent say blow out for a bite and that follows hot on the heels of a public policy poll that shows that that Biden is up fifteen percent which means that the new poll average in South Carolina she was a big spike for Biden it shows Biden is according to FiveThirtyEight shows Biden at thirty one percent in Sanders a twenty one percent if Biden would blow out Sanders in South Carolina in fact there's a new poll that shows the tenders actually running below times tire in South Carolina believe or not if Bernie were to finish third in South Carolina and buy more to clean up in South Carolina this radically region there's the race in a serious serious way why will suddenly it appears that Joe Biden is a living human being and that is a massive thing because then we move on to super Tuesday and once we get super Tuesday remember South Carolina has a lot of delegates I don't want it all gets once you get to super Tuesday if Biden is cleaning up in the southern states and Bernie is cleaning up in the northern states in say California you could very easily end up with an incredibly close race sirtuin allergies that are out about this today they're worth checking into because maybe this race isn't quite so over as we were expecting depending on what happens on to everything comes out of Saturday okay if Biden doesn't win in South Carolina the suckers over Sanders the nominee if Biden wins and very very close Sanders is still likely the nominee if Biden wins it just blows Sanders out of Sanders completely collapses in South Carolina if he gets going in South Carolina suddenly this looks like a race because you could end super Tuesday with a very close race in terms of delegate count and then it is a two man race Sanders and Biden down to the wire with presumably Bloomberg continuing to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into anti Sanders ads and all establishment money moving over by these bad really hasn't picked up a lot of money yet because frankly he's a corpse so five thirty eight has an analysis they're looking at super Tuesday so super Tuesday they're a bunch of states that our programs are California Texas North Carolina Virginia Massachusetts Minnesota Colorado Tennessee Alabama Oklahoma Arkansas Utah Maine Vermont and American Samoa those are the the states and territories that are open on super Tuesday but a late check out daily wire would have live coverage all evening long on super Tuesday Sanders is widely expected to do very well in California the polls are showing that right now in Texas Sanders and Biden running neck and neck but if Jenner is Barbara blowouts Anderson South Carolina that obviously changes things rather radically in North Carolina Sanders is running slightly ahead of iden but again if I does real well in South Carolina that may change radically in terms of North Carolina right now Sanders expected to do well in Virginia began that could change radically Massachusetts Sanders will win handily walking away Sanders is expected to compete pretty evenly with club which are in Minnesota is expected to win handily in Colorado in Tennessee Alabama Oklahoma you should expect a big bite and boost if in fact Sanders were to collapse in South Carolina the same is true of Arkansas probably true in Utah probably true in in major American Samoa but that's like four four votes in in terms of delegate count five thirty eight as it should be a good night for Sanders delegate wise just as it should be in terms of votes for forecasting and to take on five hundred eighty seven delegates but remember that's in the average model running some runs he gets more others fewer but by name Bloomberg are also forecasted to get three hundred and five and two hundred eleven delegates now this is something you noticed Bloomberg is dropping precipitously in state polls he is dropping precipitously in national polling so the flavor of the week is done those last two debates have not how Bloomberg he's looking credibly week warnings taken out Bloomberg basically which means maybe that those voters go back to Biden if Biden shows that he is not a dead human in South Carolina warrant bridging club which are far bar far behind judge not significant number of delegates only out of California club which are from Minnesota and warm from California Texas Massachusetts in the five thirty eight numbers but here is the key says Nate silver at FiveThirtyEight these numbers could and likely will change they're still just under a week before super Tuesday plenty of time for the race to shift as we had a debate on Tuesday night and South Carolina but Saturday even small fluctuations in vote share can greatly affect the number of delegates each of these candidates gets that's because in order to be eligible for any delegates from a state or district a candidate has to get at least fifteen percent of the vote there and many non Sanders candidates are hovering right around fifteen percent in many states California is a good example on average they say we're currently forecasting by twin fourteen percent seventeen percent of the vote there warns when fourteen bluebirds went thirteen judge when ten because California is what so many delegates who gets fifteen percent is super important if the numbers were right only Biden Sanders we get a share of California's a hundred and forty four statewide delegates but minor variation could really scramble the picture so it's a mess it's a mess again those polling numbers in South Carolina and it's not those late breaking pulling numbers out of South Carolina it looks actually quite strong for Joe Biden going into the election the last three pulls out of South Carolina how Biden up average double digits eighteen fifteen eight K. N. Biden's got some momentum in South Carolina James Clyburn this was a very influential congressman from South Carolina particularly with the black community in South Carolina he came out today give a big speech about Joe Biden why he's endorsing by his club endorsing Biden I am fearful for the future of this country favor for my daughter's in the future and the other children the children's future the countries of the flexion point it is time for us to to restore
Biden Banks on Moderate Vote in South Carolina
"All eyes are on South Carolina ahead of next week's Democratic presidential primary there the first in the south former vice president. Joe Biden picked up a big endorsement today from representative James Clyburn. The top ranking black lawmaker in Congress. Do we know Joe. Most importantly Jew knows us but Biden could be facing an uphill battle in the state as he tries to court. Moderate voters joining me now from the campaign trail in Georgetown. South Carolina Is Wall Street Journal. Reporter. Ken Thomas Ken. How significant is representative? James Clyburn endorsement of Biden. Clyburn is probably the most influential Democrat in South Carolina. He's been in Congress since the early nineties and is the highest ranking black lawmaker in Congress right now and his words carry a lot of wheat. Were only a few days before the South Carolina primary and a little more than fifty percent of the electorate is black here in the state so getting that support from Clyburn has a big coup for Biden. He's been trying to win here and set the tone for Super Tuesday states coming up and as we head into South Carolina's primary. How is Biden? Faring well polls show Biden ahead here in South Carolina but it's a narrow lead. He's dominated the race throughout here in South Carolina but as he has struggled in Iowa and New Hampshire the polls gotten much tighter against Bernie Sanders. He's also dealing with Tom. Star who has spent more than twenty million dollars on advertising in South Carolina so he could also be a factor in so binding is really trying to use the state as a springboard for his campaign away to calm nervous. Democrats out there who have long thought that he could be the best matchup against president trump. Can you wrote about Biden's courting of centrist voters? What can you tell us about that? As compared to his Democratic rivals who's presenting the biggest challenge for him there so Biden is trying to consolidate the more moderate vote in the Democratic primaries. He's trying to make the case that Bernie Sanders would be to outside the mainstream if he turned into the nominee and that down ballot candidates running for office in the Senate and the House would struggle as a result if if Bernie Sanders was at the top of the ticket. The trouble for Biden. Though is that it's a very crowded lane. You have Buddha. Judge who is a has had success in in Iowa and New Hampshire so far you have amy Klobuchar who is run a pretty strong campaign and other candidates as well or just trying to fill that lane right now in so biden is running the risk of Having a a splintered vote among moderates and that would allow Sanders to pick up a lot of delegates by the basis of support from Liberals Biden was asked during last night's debate if he would drop out of the race if he failed to win South Carolina and his answer was that he will win South Carolina Ken. What if he doesn't? How important is it for Biden to win the state if he wants to continue in this race his candidacy really does hinge on winning South Carolina? It probably is not a fatal blow for him if he were to come in second place but this is all about momentum in the ability to keep improving as as the calendar goes along and the the the risk for Biden if he does not win in South Carolina is that he won't have much ability to to win votes in these Super Tuesday contests. That are coming. Up On march third. Just a few days after the South Carolina. Primary wraps up. He's hoping to use a win. In South Carolina to connect with African Americans who who make up a large portion of the electorate in number of Super Tuesday states including places like Georgia Alabama Tennessee and in other states around the country.

"I've talked to the sisters and I know what they're feeling and so I said to people. Listen the resources down there. This man people down there Doug Jones GonNa win this election and he wanted so Doug Jones perhaps an example of a white candidate who gaps. I'm curious looking at Pew. Research Center Data White Democrats in particular have become much more liberal over the past two decades now a majority of White Democrats identify as liberal. That's not the case for black and Hispanic Democrat absolutely. That number is closer to thirty percent and I think the trump campaign see some of that and says we're going to go after voters of color. For whom the Democratic Party? Maybe too liberal. Are you worried at about that? Divide that exists now between maybe white liberals and more conservative voters of color in the party. Yes and that's what I'm talking about. We're not saying reality versus rhetoric all this liberalism. That's a bunch of rhetoric. Just look at. We regain the house this time. Why not because for Progressives defeated for Progressives in pick up a single thing in those four races that everybody talks about is fine? She beat another Democrat. You know I love She's is fine. She replaced another Black Democrat. As you go down through it but all of a sudden because these other people winning seats Lauren Underwood. She wins a seat against an incumbent. Republican in the district. That's four percent African American. Those are the people that flipped the house. And so when you got all these people with all those liberal rhetoric. It doesn't mean a thing in this district everyone you are house. Majority Whip Party. Unity is your job in part. What do you do facing those kinds of divisions in the party? I mean you mentioned a Alexandra classroom. Cortez she said that in any other country she and Joe Biden would not even be in the same party so facing the nomination and just a general election coming down the pike. What do you think leadership or progressives need to do in order to work out their differences? Nothing there are differences. That's what I'm saying would need to direct our attention to what we can do for people who are trying to participate in this process. What would you do for them? Their families and their communities. That's where we need to folks out attention and I think that's where we're making a big mistake. People ask for time. How do you get such strong support from the back end humidity? How did he get us? Prone support From the Chambers of Commerce I get support for the National Chamber of Commerce. I have never sacrificed principles one time. Never and you look at my voting record. Have a voting record That any so called Liberal Would be embarrassed with you. Hold onto your principles but you make sure that you make programs work for them so I don't talk about Reparations as a thing I'll talk about how we repair faults. That's what's two thirds all about. That's what My student reducing student loan debt. I didn't go out and says I'M GONNA emanate student on that. We got candidates. I'm more in limited. Your student loan debt. I'm going to give you free childcare or give you free college education come on so you clearly doesn't agree with that way of campaigning. Or is there any aspect of what? Progressives are arguing that you think is right that you say you have point we can learn from you. I'm a progressive. I guess okay so perhaps more liberal parts of the party that we've been discussing be practical drink pads but I mean. Is there any any part of their appeal to the public? You think is correct that you say okay we can learn from you Alexander Cortez or Bernie Sanders and take a page out of your book absoluteness. Jamaica. I believe in everybody. Having access to healthcare problem with the goal the problem is how do we get there by the having access to affordable housing? How do we get there? That's where I disagree. I don't think this goal disagree with the approaches. And you're not going to do in South Carolina Georgia Florida Mississippi Alabama Texas. The approaches. GotTa be different. How does call an RN? Defeat the immediate past chair of the Republican National Committee. How does he feel in the district near the B block? He did it by appealing to people's basics. Do you think that if Bernie Sanders wins the nomination that the Democratic Party will lose the general election in the fall? I think it would be very very hard for us to win. We don't have to lose if he's right and remember now he keeps saying if I'm the nominee I'm gonNA turn out all these new voters. He's saying that because he was going to be required if you turn them out. He wins if he doesn't we lose all. I'm saying that George McGovern didn't bring new voters and we cared on the one st just wrapping up here. I know your endorsement as forthcoming have you ever endorsed? Someone and later regretted giving out that endorsement. Yes another elected official. Not An elected official. I regret Feeling the class Thomas will get in touch with his roots when he got to be is a pretty good justice. "The discussion of reparations. That was congressman James Clyburn, democrat of South Carolina talking about the best way to proceed with the national discussion over slavery reparations. This is the takeaway. The WNBA season is in full swing. And the league has more recently become known for its activism, and as a place where athletes, feel more comfortable being out as gay, and that move toward acceptance has had an impact on how the athletes present themselves off the court may seem small, but the evolution of fashion in the WNBA to include more on drowsiness and masculine looks marks an important change from what the league used to expect from its athletes. Britney democrat is a sportswriter focusing on the intersection of gender and sports. Thanks for being with us. Brittany, thanks for having me. So let's talk about pre-game looks in both the NBA and the WNBA. How long those outfits been catching public attention before Instagram if you will. It's definitely been longer in the NBA where they've almost been using the hallway like a runway. And now designers are, you know, debuting clothing on the NBA, athletes, and boosting sales that way in terms of the WNBA, this is a newer thing that has definitely risen with social media, and especially this year. I've, you've seen a major uptick in that with teams dedicating specific hallways for taking these pre-game photos, and some of them even making hallway murals as a backdrop for them you've done reporting on how there are a number of stars in the WNBA, who are embracing less gender normative, fashion, and looks, who are some of those athletes, Courtney Williams with the Connecticut sun is one for new Sykes with the Atlanta dream, tamra young, who's with the Las Vegas aces. And she actually even has her own clothing line. That's just a few, but there are many, many on every team who. Are doing this? And what kind of how would you describe there looks I would say that gender presentation is on a spectrum? And when we think of typical traditional feminine looks, it might be heels. It might be dresses. It might be, you know, really items and along the spectrum are more androgynous or gender neutral, looks and masculine of center and Bush looks as well which may include actual men's clothes, or things like blazers and pants and sneakers, so it can fall really anywhere on that spectrum. Now how supportive has the WNBA been about those fashion choices? Yeah, I feel like there has been this shift, particularly in more recent years in which the WNBA has stopped trying to shoehorn its players into an image that doesn't necessarily fit who they are. And they did that for a very long time. And it's really only I'd say, Lisa aboard. Who was the president until last season? I feel like it was part of her legacy to really start to embrace the players for who they are, and to let them be themselves, which really has brought a much more authentic connection, I think between fans and players as well. Fuck a little bit about that history. Because you've written about the fears that or the unfounded, fears, I should say that playing sports could make women queer or more masculine, what impacted that have on women athletes in the past, and what they were expected or allowed to wear. Yes. So this goes back to the turn of the twentieth century, where they were afraid that women were too fragile to play sports or that playing sports would make them masculine. A lot of those fears were rooted in homophobia worries that women who became to manage would be unable to, you know, bear children, which was they're seen as their purpose, and we can see in the all American girls. Professional baseball league during World War Two made. Famous by the movie league of their own the players were forced to wear lipstick on the field. They had to play in skirts, they attended charm school. And these requirements were to make them both attractive to the men who might be watching, and as non-threatening as possible. But those policies went deeper, it wasn't just because they wanted the women to appear feminine really was a fear of, of lesbianism that led to that there was no Frighteners ation policies as well between teammates because of that fear and that continued, you know, in the WNBA early history, I think they also tried to shoehorn their players into a more palatable what they perceived as palatable image, which was rooted in traditional femininity, you know, in two thousand eight they had make up classes for rookies, and those went on for several years, and they became optional in later years, but it was something that they asked players to do. And they even had in the early odds. There was a campaign. They called this is who I am. And to watch it now is pretty cringe-worthy. Their shots of like sue bird, who's one of the best players to have ever played like in a bathing suit while holding a basketball, so, yeah, this history goes back a really long time. I wonder if there you mentioned, the WNBA as a previous makeup tutorials for rookies was there anything quivalent to how male athletes were expected to look or were, they ever trained on how to cut their hair or shave or any of those other things. You know, I don't know. I know there's some baseball teams like the Yankees notoriously have no facial hair policy. That's one that comes to mind. But I don't think it's ever been as extreme, as we've seen in women's sports, and, you know, there's this perception or stereotype, that all female athletes are gay, which is not true, but a lot of them are and for a long time, there has been this effort to prevent them from being perceived, as you know, who they are, and that, and that fear is rooted in what in the fact that they would turn off mail viewers, or the fact that advertiser, wh where's that fear rooted in a lot of things that they would turn off the men who might be watching, I think, you know, filtered through the male gaze, which particularly sports has often been the assumption being that the audience is, is male and that they wouldn't wanna watch women just play sports in that maybe the attraction might be the attractiveness of the athletes to. A heterosexual male. Viewer. I think there was fear of losing money or, you know, a lot of times, this is driven by money who traditionally gets the endorsements and the marketing deals often that has been athlete to fit these very traditional ideas of feminine, beauty, who are thin and blonde and white. So I think it's rooted in a lot of things and also that, you know, queer women have balked the system that, you know, revolves around patriarchy, and so there's also that as well that they are somehow issuing what they should be in who they should be for several players on the US women's soccer team have started their own clothing brands that feature a lot of gender neutral pieces. Is that starting to become more of an option for female athletes? Or are a lot of female athletes still looking to partner with bigger brands like Nike who may not be as open to gender neutral fashion. I think what we're. Seeing is athletes, creating the kind of clothes that they wanna wear. And if they don't think it's available from a mainstream brand that they're going to go out and create it themselves. You know, lake tamra young with the w NBA, and I think what we're also seeing is, you know, you mentioned these are soccer players, and we're talking about the WNBA. These two leagues have the most openly gay players the most players who are out, and it is those players who are starting to push the boundaries of presentation. And I think moving their entire sport into a more accepting direction. We're running out of time in the segment, but I do want to get in one question here, we're talking about fashions off the court. But what about women's the way women's fashions are being policed when they're playing the sport? And I think the most obvious example, here is three and Williams. Yeah. Absolutely. And I think you know what should be at play is the comfort and what allows them to play their game the best. But unfortunately it's often been about how they look as much as how well they play, but that is starting to change..

"I'm waiting for Steve Cohen who is Jewish to come out and condemn Representative. Omar, David Duke has come out and said that Ilam Omar is quote, the most important member of congress. Now, the former grand wizard the Klux Klan and open racist and anti Semite is publicly defending Representative Omar in the wake of the freshman Democrats series of anti-semitic statements that have well now, I guess shown us what the Democratic Party really thinks nationally of people that are Jewish jokes. Tweet is praise of Omar today, calling her the most important member of the US congress now that she has stood up to the Democratic Party leadership after making anti-semitic statements against Israel, which Democrats have refused to condemn that. Would also include Jewish congressman from right here in the mid south. Steve cohen. All because she's one of them. And apparently, if you're a democrat, you can say, whatever you want to and other Democrats will protect and defend you at all costs. Even if it means you sang that basically, you believe that Jewish people should not exist. Number three in line Representative James Clyburn. The Democratic Party third. Highest ranking member of the Democratic Party said Omar's experiences, quote, more personal than that of holocaust survivors children. That's now his new defense of her. "Joining Nancy Pelosi on stage. Congressional democratic leadership. James Clyburn, Barbara Lee. Benny. Currently the house GOP has two hundred thirty five seats in the house of representatives. It's looking like the Democrats could pick up thirty five seats. So that would bring the House Republicans down to about two hundred two hundred and eighteen needed for the majority. But Steve Scully has more results this morning, and Peter we're focusing on the house races. Take a look at Georgia's sixth congressional district keep in mind, Karen Handel, she won and that special election last year, and it is essentially tied with just a handful of votes between the Republican incumbent and Lucy MacBeth who is the democratic challenger and keep in mind that Lucy MacBeth is a gun a gun rights advocate. Her son was murdered in two thousand twelve which essentially led her to run for this seat. And so we will be keeping an eye on Georgia's sixth congressional district. Let's head out west in Utah. The fourth congressional district were NIA love hoping to hold onto her seat. But then mcadams has been maintaining his lead. With nearly seventy percent of the vote now in he has about fifty one and a half percent compared to nearly forty seven percent for the Republican incumbent in California's forty eighth congressional district. We'll go to Nevada's fourth congressional district. Kristen hardy who is the Republican candidate. With about nine percent of the vote. Now reporting has sixty six percent Stephen Horford has twenty seven and a half percent. California's forty eighth congressional district Harley Ruta the democratic candidate is increasing his lead over congressman Dana Rohrabacher, the Republican incumbent who's been in the house of representatives for three decades. But this could be another potential pickup for the Democrats in Washington, Kim schreier who is the candidate to defeat. Dino Rossi has increased her lead more votes now in that congressional district with about sixty four percent now in the democratic candidate has nearly fifty three percent of the vote. There was a poll in Alaska's at large. District showed Dongyang behind by one point. But now you see the actual numbers in that race. He is holding a lead fifty three percent in that at-large seat. He of course, is the dean of the house of representatives a reminder that you can check out the results on our website as well as speeches the victory and the concession speeches on demand as we get more of them tonight, especially out west in Arizona in Nevada. But we've collected so far it's all there. Available for you to check it out at C span dot ORG eater. Now, the hill newspaper is tweeting out that Stacey Abrams suggests a recount will take place in the Georgia governor's race. You can see it there. Bryan camp up a little over fifty percent. Stacey Abrams at about forty eight point seven or so percent. That's where that race stands. Now. A couple of hours ago Kellyanne Conway came out to the White House lawn to speak to reporters about the White House. React. To tonight results. Gubernatorial.
