"james cliff" Discussed on The Crossover NBA Show with Chris Mannix

"Chris mannix and Howard back. It's a whole new level for you and me, Chris. This relationship. Like and subscribe for the best weekly NBA content these two are capable of. What does that mean? Could be the best duo ever. I don't see how you can beat that. Here they are. Chris mannix, and Howard back. All right, we are back Chris Maddox and Howard Beck cross over NBA podcast and Howard on this episode we are going to discuss what would once seemed almost unthinkable. And that is the idea of trading LeBron James. The Lakers season, I don't know if that pelicans lost was rock bottom. There's been a few kind of rock bottoms for the Lakers, but the level of effort. And that's how that game was decided, right? Like that was not a talent gap necessarily between the Lakers and pelicans. That was a team in New Orleans that played really hard and a team with the Lakers that a lot of times in that game looked like they were playing in quicksand, just not matching the effort intensity of New Orleans. So let's call that the Nader of this Laker season. So this one's out. And for me, you start looking at the future in the future does not look very good for the Lakers. Russell Westbrook is under contract for next year. They'll have a lot of new pieces coming in and out, but you're talking about new minimum salary pieces. You know, guys with deep flaws in their game that are going to come in. So I'm not looking at this off season and next season as being a room to make any kind of seismic changes to what the Lakers are on top of that. I mean, we're all kind of waiting for that LeBron James cliff, right? Like he hasn't hit it or even come near it, but at some point when he goes into what his age 38 season next year, there's going to be a decline. And we've seen some signs of decline. Albeit small ones from LeBron, but at some point it's going to come. So I look at the Lakers and Bill plaschke from the LA times kind of got The Rock rolling down the mountain on this last week and Bill has been an influential Los Angeles columnist as you know full well as a former colleague of his out with the LA times. He's been there for a long time and his voice resonates in that area. So he kind of got some momentum on this idea of trading LeBron and I can't disagree. There are layers to this. You have to peel back, not the least of which is it makes no sense for the Lakers to outright tank because they don't have control of their draft picks for the foreseeable future, but they're not winning anything with this roster. And if you know that, and it feels like at this point, the Lakers should know that. That every avenue should be explored, including trading LeBron. Well, Chris, I'll say this. As you notice, absolutely influential and been writing in that market for a long time and obviously, yeah, he and I go way back. I love Bill great, great person in addition to a phenomenal columnist. And one of the great things about the way he's always going about covering LA sports and particularly the Lakers obviously I did not pay as much attention in my days out there to the Dodgers and everything else. But he was always some combination of the voice of reason slash voice of the fan, right? Bill felt it. So when he's coming to the table, he's not doing it just because it's a fun hot take. Bill's writing that because he is, I think, kind of embracing encompassing, channeling all of the angst among Laker fans and that whole region about where things are and realizing that, yeah, like this is, this feels like a dead end. What else can you do? So I'll start with this. The fact that it's a discussion at all, that plasticky, as you say, got the ball rolling in some ways on this discussion. The fact that it is even a topic that we can reasonably discuss says a lot, right? Like, I don't agree with it. We'll get into that. I adamantly opposed to the idea of them trading LeBron. But that it's a reasonable discussion that it doesn't feel crazy that it doesn't feel like a hot take. Says something about where they are. It's a last resort, obviously. So you got to decide first if you're at the last resort stage, have you tried other resorts? Have you gone to Cabo? Well, I mean, stop down on there for a second Howard. Haven't they? Haven't they tried? The only thing left to try. Is what they can try to do this summer. Now this summer, Russell Westbrook will be as appealing as he possibly can be. He will be an expiring contract that some team out there will look and say, look, maybe we can stomach, you know, 6 months of Russell Westbrook will be a bad team, but at the end of that 6 months, we'll get Russell's contract off our books. The Lakers also will have two first round picks to dangle the 2027 first and the 2029 first. Now, I think it's ludicrous to trade unprotected 2027 and 2029 picks. Like, this team as we, as we see it, like they look like the Titanic right before hit the iceberg. Like they're steaming into it at full speed, not turning. So why you would deal potential lottery picks when you're in this type of situation is beyond me, but if the Lakers decide they're going to go the route of being all in on LeBron James, like we are going to maximize the last year, two years, three years, whatever it is, LeBron has left in Los Angeles or will play in Los Angeles, then yeah, you go and do that, but that to me is the quote last resort. If they don't make a deal this summer involving Westbrook and involving that draft capital, nada, nothing is going to change. And they risk going into next season with LeBron as a free agent, which is not a tenable situation in my mind. All right, so before we get to the last resort, spend a little time with me here at club med on the not quite last resort. One, the Lakers are always bit about stars, right? So they do everything possible to get them. They don't generally trade them, right? Jerry West retired a Laker. Wilt Chamberlain retired a Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar retired a Lake or Kobe Bryant retired a Laker. They did trade Shaq, but that was because they had Kobe, and there was a little bit of an issue there as people may recall. This is not a team that's generally going to just like throw up its hands and say we're screwed and trade one of the greatest players in NBA history, so before we get to the trade LeBron stage and there's nothing they could do right now anyway, right? Like we got to wait till the season's over. As you point out, they'll have another draft pick and play once they get to or through this coming draft. It'll give them one more piece to play with. Russell B on an expiring $47 million contract. Just trading the math gymnastics alone are going to be astounding to pull it off because it may not be one team. It may require three teams, four teams, 5 teams, whatever, to figure out how to do this and to find the right home for him and to make it work for cap reasons. Although it's always easier in the off season, right? When teams are under the cap, it's a lot easier to make deals. And that opportunity comes in July. So there's the trade Russ option. There's the use the future picks option, which yes, scary as hell because you've already given up a ton of picks, mostly the Anthony Davis deal in the first place, picks and pick swaps. But I will go back to a premise that I've always..

"Welcome to another episode of Lamed Parlay. Your host might joke. I'm joining me. Today is none other than the famous James Hinchcliffe James First off. How are you doing today? I'm doing very well. Thanks for asking yourself hanging in there. Man and second question comes from actually comes from my wife is how are the dogs enjoying Hornsey and so far? I think the dogs are sick of seeing becky. I around the house you know like we used to have run of the world guide route. Now you're always you're yell it up to get up the couch and everything. Though I think they're they're anxious for the evacuated. I do have to say your weller. Looks like he's the size of a small bear at this point already. Yeah Yeah we're quite quickly approaching medium bear. Think is you know when when you get that kind of dog either. Bernie doodle tend to many Bernie doodle which is which is kind of funniest thing But it's it's a little bit of A little bit of lucky deck with the size of dog they can range from thirty to sixty five. Pounds really depends on On luck draw and so we weren't sure what we were getting. He's he's eight months and he's he's tipped over fifty so you still got a bit of room to go. Like think is going to be a big boy while that's that's insane that's actually before. I KNOW EVERYBODY LISTENS. Probably like why are you starting with this? But that's actually how I got my wife into paying attention to Indycar was look James. Santa Claus has a dog look at that that dogs instagram and now she actually pays attention to racing so that you did help win my wife over a little bit into the racing world there you go on the dog day. We'll give the dog so we'll we'll go to some some racing here you've got Texas coming up now in just a couple of weeks. Any thoughts or concerns on the fact that it's kind of lumped into one day the first race of the year after a unique in longer than usual off season. The the longer off season is is definitely the weirdest part of it. All you know I mean if you think back to twenty six teen. We got rained out of the first attempt to Texas and came back two or months later. Whatever it was. We got ten minutes the practice and picked up the race on lap. Seventy seven and everything was fine so the the idea of being a one day show. I don't think really Really throws anybody for a loop. It's it's something that we've sort of done in the past In a similar capacity but the weirdest thing is just yeah at at that point of the year. We were three quarters away this even when it happened last time this is going to be everybody's first race since Laguna last September. So there's definitely going to be a little bit of You know more cobwebs do To brush off. And I think everybody's going to have to understand and got to go to play a little smarter. Play a little safer you know. I said we're not three quarters of the way through the season we're just starting off and so there's there's no reason to make silly moves into to push too hard too fast Hopefully still going to be a long season and lots of racing involves but it's easy to get things wrong you know trying to trying to rush at all by Going to two quick for sure. That's that was. My thought was okay to our practice before is good but what happens if somebody in your Craxi suspension piece. Do they have enough time? And do they have enough people to fix a car in a couple of hours to get running again? It all depends. You know it all depends on On how big the head is in compared to team is. But you know we've had. We've had days of a of a race weekend. I duNNo. We'll rain that led to qualifying before the race on the same day. And so it's that's not at all Situation that we're not used to you know indycar. Has You know sort of guidelines in terms of how much time minimum they give teams in between sessions in case of something like that and I think all that still being followed so I think it'll be fine awesome so last Texas based question. I don't know how much testing you've personally had with the new era screen. Is there any concern with the new? Just not being familiar with its characteristics. Ana Race track before Texas you know. I don't think I don't think it's concern about about you know characteristics. I'll remember praise. Allah concerns the right word. You know I think that every driver and especially in every engineer is the is dying to have more testing and a waste. They were able to come a little bit more prepared but the end of the day is pretty much the same for everyone. You know the work all did a test day at Texas after the CODA Open test so we know the cars have run on track with screen and and there wasn't any problems you know at that task Unfortunately no enter any cars royal the runabout one because all of our guys are Knock classified as rookies but they It's the same sort of scenario for everyone you know and I think it's I think it's GonNa be interesting to see how team sort of handle the task. And I can certainly going to speak to the level of simulation that each team has available to them and and what we roll off with on On I practice and the morning awesome so we will switch gears here slowly after a couple years away from Andrea. You're you're back into stable. There does that help your confidence going into Texas knowing the team knowing some of the guys that are there and kind of being familiar with how things are typically run it Andretti. It does for sure you know if I was if I was walking into an organization I never worked with. I would certainly be a little more apprehensive and maybe a little bit more work to do in in ingratiate myself to the team. But there's a lot of familiar faces. There are a lot of people that I worked with. You know in mice than at Andretti back in twelve to fourteen and And that does definitely. GimMe a degree of confidence. The the tricky part is you know as I was supposed to be heading into my first race at the GP last weekend we were already forays into the season. And I would have been in all those races. I would have been Attending engineering briefings. Really getting myself back up to speed with the procedural things that happened at Andretti. Go through thing you know. Then it's been five years since they're so there's there's Definitely some things that have changed and it's grown quite a bit since since I last ran there and so it would have been really nice to have at least a little bit of an understanding of you. Know some of their protocols and procedures and sometimes sorta you know sleep on that stuff to let him marinade. Now we're going to be talking about it all shop for the first time. I actually see it and it's going to be the first time doing it so that that part's a little bit a little bit tougher but at the end of the day you know we gotta get in and do the best job that we can make sense so switching gears here slaley. This is a fan question. We saw Joseph new gardens extreme artistic skills on social media. Yeah I mean it's it's really amazing. It's actually still better than I would do. But nonetheless has James Cliff picked up any new quarantine hobbies you know so I I swore to myself by the time it was all done. I wanted to be able to juggle. I have I have yet to start practicing. So I'm I'm definitely not on a on a positive stretch there but then the other thing that I I've taken up trying to pick up his Spanish I've been on. Oh I've been on duo lingo for A little bit every day trying to learn a little bit of Spanish. So we'll see how long see how well that holds up. When we get back more I love it so on a similar note you you alex and Sam all appeared on a podcast called whiskey cast that a couple years ago. I was a guest on so I wanted to know since then have found any new whiskey or bourbons that that really caught your eye Honestly what's interesting about quarantine is you're not there shopping and And trying As much bourbon as you are in so So no I think the short answer. I've I've been. I've been plowing through the stock pile of that. I had for corn team starting and it's much much more difficult in Pennsylvania to get anything right now other than what you can get at the local brewery because all of these state run liquor. Stores are closed. So that's all a challenge. I've actually asked mark at Whiskey. Cast a couple of times. What do I do so? And he doesn't really have a very good answer for me because there is no good answer. Did you get one of the fancy whiskey Whiskey cast Gla- tasting glasses. Yeah yeah he sent through a bunch of them so we've got a a bunch of nyc grandparent's now to add to the collection awesome so another question that typically just would ask unfortunately. She had to go to work early so she she couldn't join us. You pick three guests to bring dinner whether they're still with us or not. Who would your three guests be great? Great Question Well I WANNA have dinner with Greg more. You know. I never got the chance to really get to know my hero and it sucks because I've become such good friends with Dario. Tk and guide that were really tight with them So would have been would have been cool to get to know. This is Greg Dinner I would like to have Seth Macfarlane because I think he's going to the funniest guys out there and be it'd be cool to have You know have dinner at a bourbon with him and Last.

"Not. I don't know I mean I can't I can't say yes I can't say no. I think both sides could have handled things a little bit better. I don't know but I also you said that the very last minute kinda thing that Honda stepped in and I don't think it's at the very last minute because this is just February so he's still got some time to throw some stuff together or the last minute in that they are set to announce like Friday in on Thursday. They told him to kick rocks. Or something I I totally serious saying with the IRS room for both sides to kind of know let things go and I agree with that. I just think that given what Alonzo had to go through from twenty fifteen to twenty seventeen. I mean he's right. Ana was terrible Formula One. They did him absolutely no favors. I mean they spence they as McLaren Alonzo and stuff van. Doren they spent a Lotta time and effort trying to get them from last place to somewhere towards the front and it just never panned out and it was between reparation the lack of engineering off things like that. Whatever it may be it just never worked out for him and you know at the time. Yeah I would. I would have been frustrated too. If I was Alonzo so I personally I think Hana needs to take a step back and realize yeah. You know we didn't really help out Fernando those years and McLaren as well and you know our informative one. We're winning again so maybe we should just let it go So I guess with that Alonzo. He's got some question marks we feel. Now where does he end up? I mean this was a couple of fan questions on this. One including from ashes. Racing Janelle and ashes dead and Andy Jones and a couple of others. So what are we gonNA end up now? I think he's GonNa end up right back at Mclaren where I said he was going to be at in the first place on my. I think that's his best shot. I was kind of taken aback when he was looking like he was going to be with. Android anyways because I felt like he was always going to be with unclear. I feel like he's GonNa be back at Maclay Renton so in the interest of disagreeing with just so that one of us can be right when he goes somewhere. I'm going to say he's going to be the dragon. Speed Indy. Five hundred champion champion Indy. Five hundred driver. Oh boy I'm GONNA GONNA Regret Stink Alan for awhile all right. That's a flex I was about to say I have a hot which is H. A. W. Capital T. Take coming but I don't know if I can top. That is going to be hard. My hot take was that Pepsi is GonNa say. Screw it or put five cars in the field and Alonzo's going to be one of no. That doesn't top dragon. Speed enforcement speed winning the resume. My hot capital t take and this penske as normal answer so you can make it a heartache. Spelled normal and with smell h h IOT take is that money is the winner of this segment as far as H. A. W. Capital. T TAKE. You got time to redeem yourself your though because the next question is will Andretti autosport. Still field a six car at Indianapolis and for new. Yeah of course they're gonNA still at that car in the raise. A hand for who is a really tough question. I GONNA pick somebody. Can I left field here? I'M GONNA go with Oriol Servia. I think you know. He's he's been decent in his tries. So why not? I'm GonNa go with Carlos Yunos. He's got the Andretti history there before he. I'm sure probably wants back in. I think I've heard his name mentioned a timer to another places over the last month so I'll go with Munis. Yes I think. Technically this Alonzo was in dirty seventh car. If we're cutting Harvey I agree. I mean it's so easy to lose track since it's basically a third of the field at this point but my answer is a guy who already has sponsorship announced and that's actually James Cliffs and another reason I say that is when he was showing off his livery. It was just a kind of a brief sketch on his phone. The engine cover on that livery had Honda pointed out to buy the critically acclaimed offer Stephen King In our message groups so I think Hinchcliffe. Since he's got the money I wouldn't be surprised to see him in that entry at all. That's going to be my guest here and then the final question for this segment is from David. Mitchell on facebook should indycar step in and help Fred. Find a ride. No I thank you David for commenting that but indy-car is under no obligation to help. Any driver is especially one who is not a regular find a C. I get why Mark Miles actually tried to help Tony. Kahn find some funding this year. But Nando Alonzo no the the the five hundred in the series is bigger than just one driver. I have to agree with you which hurts me a little bit. Tattoo agree with you. One hundred percent should not get help from India cards. It's up to him you know. I mean he wants to come and win the triple crown in that school and that would be an amazing piece of history. But I don't think any car means to help him agree and I think that helping him out. Be a kind of Tony George. Move and that is no longer the case that the union apples motor speedway of come down to the final day needing somebody. So let's go find Larry foyt and put him in a car or something along those lines so I think that is not the responsibility of Indycar and I think they should just Kinda Unless we're at the point where we may not get thirty three entries. Maybe but that doesn't look like it's GonNa case so I agree. I do not think they should help. But thanks for the question. David thank you moving on. So we'll we'll take a break here for team pit lane and a little run in with stump the host. So thank you to matt grew holds. Thank you Colin Taylor. And lastly thank you to Steven A. Clark and everybody else who is a member in chats daily about racing so with that being said stump the host this week is going to honor. Chip Ganassi racing at chip. Ganassi racing is celebrating their thirtieth year in motor sports this year. So the Refunded if they're real easy but it's it's a very simple question. They have won many indy five hundreds and how many INDYCAR CHAMPIONSHIPS? I can see Matt counting right now. I'm just GONNA make up. I can just make up numbers. They're doing wrong. Hang on no. Yeah you go for A. You're telling me I'm doing it wrong. I'm just give a next step up like how can you make a wrong? The question wrong. Then you're making it look wrong. They have one seven and nine. Give me a second here. So in hundreds two thousand two thousand eight nine two thousand ten. No yes no. He didn't own it. And so two thousand two hundred eighty two thousand ten doesn't twelve any the jeopardy clock right now years listed five. If you said five it's not correct. Four for his car. I was calling and then championship says ninety. Six Ninety seven ninety eight ninety nine. Oh three O's death is just sitting back and letting Matt Count as one L. O. Eight nine ten eleven thirteen fifteen seventeen on the wrong eighteen. So I think that's what twelve twelve. Yes taking too long. No no you deserve that one so we will transition right into.

"About to carlin's behind. But if it's any indication pants putting on ponchos it has picked up then earlier this afternoon, Jack Harvey, certainly Mark receive a lot of slipping and sliding now so I would have to think that the track is starting to be affected by these sprinkles Gilman, and that'll be an battle of we're watching on track. As craziest strategies had been is for the fourth position. Dickson has it right now as passionate closest within about three car links tournament seven you can really see these drivers start to back up these corners as the rain continues to fall little bit harder. Those breaking zones become more like excels as they make their way through turnover. Ten Nixon still has to spot overpass. It is visible now is that precipitation as the skyline of Indianapolis off in the background starts to fade away a little bit. That's because of that moisture that's come into play Scott Dixon, hurt by say they were counting on it. But what they also might have been thinking about whether or not signing passionate was going to win. It's going to real in Scott, Dixon, Dixon on the push to pass Paget or trying to get out of fourteen on update for Bob how? Yeah, Mark the story of Carlin races pothole award his scratchy today can be told. But what we're seeing down here in pit-lane. You're right now, they have the rain tires and these thicker black tires leaned up against the wall. I can tell you exactly which says. Interesting to note underscore with Colt verte said the pre race he remembered that even the race control has told them that precipitation picking on the racetrack her to feel like that poll up to the driver. Yeah. No, I I completely agree with that in. And of course, the only call that the that the race Detroit really can have is at what point do they say, okay? You can now forfeit your tire strategies because now you could rightly put Ron rain tires. I don't think we're quite to that point yet. But that would hugely benefit the likes of Joseph new garden. Pots award Scott Dixon, basically, everyone except for James cliffs. So I think the arrow Schmidt Peterson motorsports team is going to be talking to him because saying no, no, no, no, don't call. It. Don't call it. We we want to keep the tire regulations as they work because otherwise that that essentially takes James out of the contents of the race win leader Joseph Dugard has.

"It is absolutely free in Suzy Weldon joins us now. Hello suzy. Hi. How are you? I'm fine. It's good to see to. Thank you for having me. I wanna ask you about the kids because the last time I saw them was at the last Dan Weldon memorial go karting race. And that was probably was two years ago. Fifteen which I'm like, how did that happen? It was I think twenty fifteen with our last event. That's when I saw the kid. Yeah. And they were still babies. My oldest is ten now. Oliver's eight so. Yeah, just crazy. How time? Flies. You know? I was doing the math. When I saw that pro-am was coming back. It's hard to believe the Dan's been gone for eight years now almost eight years it'll be eight years in October. He was one of the most personable drivers I've ever known and flashy and cute, I've explaining this because there may be some that are new to racing that don't know who Dan was an incredible driver fun to watch made a race exciting. If he was in it and IndyCar series champion and two-time Indy. Five hundred winner he loved the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and completely in love with his family and then tragically killed in a crash in Las Vegas speedway. Twenty eleven for anybody that that doesn't know who he was how do you describe him? Oh, man. I mean, there's so many things that that obviously I loved about him. He just had the biggest personality, and when you walked in a room or he walked into the room, he just kind of took over and he had just an amazing ability to connect with people. People. I think that was one of the reasons why he was so loved by the fans, and he just loved Indianapolis. And he really understood the tradition and history of this race and what it meant to win. And and you know, that was all part of. Just his success here. I feel and and it was a special place for him and to be able to win it twice and to able to share that with our children, both our children. Obviously the second time that he wanted in two thousand eleven which is something that was so special and we'll never forget. And you know, it's it's just amazing. Now, I feel so humbled by all the support and love still just the outpouring from all the the IndyCar community in the fans and just people that didn't even know him or even know about racing just just touched by by him and how much he's had an impact on people. And even now, it's just it's so amazing. I feel so loved, you know, the two of you are great love story short is is it was. But it was a great love story. And the great love story with his fans. You know, he never he never turned anybody away if they wanted to stop and talk to him for a minute. And so it neither is a more. There is a foundation Dan Wheldon foundation now that you have put together in a lot of this. Proceeds will. Benefit the foundation from this race today. It seems like if I remember correctly a lot of the proceeds from the foundation went to at one time, the Alzheimer's Association that was an organization I think that was close to his heart. Is that right? Yes. So sadly, his mother supassed away about two years after he did she was diagnosed with early onset, Alzheimer's, and that was something that was, you know, just a devastating blow tar family, and it was something that he was really advocating for and working closely with the Alzheimer's Association. So when he passed I started the foundation did this event to start a fund in her name name is sue, and we donate a lot of money to have the fun to savage to help families and also research and development, and then it kind of gave us an opportunity as the years kind of went on to raise money for other causes at reclose to us. One year we were able to raise the money for. Julia Wilson and her family, and obviously Shadley. Julia had similar story to mine. Her husband Justin passed away in an accident on track. So it's just been a really amazing journey to be able to have the foundation to put on these events and to be able to give bags I felt so much love and support. You know, certainly after Dan died and just for me to be able to give back in some small way has been so amazing. And and fulfilling for me. Well, we want everybody to come out and support this is absolutely free for you that want to attend and watch and you'll be thrilled. Because it not only the every driver comes out for this. Big names will be there. Tony kahn. Scott Dixon Conor Daly. I just saw Connor will be there and many more Simon pageant. Oh, and and Spencer pig it. And I know the list is long James cliff will be there, right? Jane? Simon won't be there this year. He's competed with us in the past. Okay. I'll be there this year. But we've got some just some. Yeah. Some all all the l the top guys that are going to be racing in the Indy. Five hundred this year. It's you know, it's amazing. They'll all be out there supporting supporting us, and it's going to be probably about fourteen teams. They make make up with three amateur drivers. Yes. We've got a lot of the Macy's sponsors onboard Firestone PNC Bank, big machine records Nova tack IndyCar, and I m s o obviously supporting they'll be Connor will be driving the cart that that.
