"In place by by him from a schematic attic standpoint and then really Steve Time should not go without blame the Carton Arizona Cardinals G._M.. That brought in you know both Mike Glennon and Sam Bradford to run. Mike McCoy's offense. I may just it was a comedy of Ariza comedy of ineptitude from this franchise and what it led to was the team bottoming out to the point where they got the number one overall pick and they've essentially head to restart in very much are are looking instead of short cutting instances last year at quarterback and head coach. They're going for a long rebuild approach and that's the sound way to do it John since you mentioned him. I have to ask you about James Becher. He was brought to New York last year. There was quite a bit of fanfare over the the hiring of Becher instead instead of the retaining of former defensive coordinator Steve Spagnolo the giants defense performed badly a year ago. Dave Gettleman said a number of times it had they been able to get stops stops at the end of games they would have won four or five more games than they did in their five and eleven season might take on bet your has been that it's not fair to judge him off of last season because he he didn't have the kind of players that fit the type of defense that he likes to run. Just give giants fans your thoughts on James Becher on the kind of defensive coordinator. He is in on what he might bring to the giants given some time to fully implement his system and get the kind of players that he wants yeah. Absolutely I think the perfect situation to compare imperative is what you just explained. "With is that the giants should have at the very least kept that group together and then built behind them or if at all possible keep that together build behind them. And then add another pass rusher to play opposite of Vernon. Instead they. Got rid of the guy who generated the bulk of their pressure and then completely blew up the secondary. Which granted was not the wrong thing to do. Yeah. So I was very adamant at the end of the season that a witty Vernon was not the problem. I think that was very clear for it. Those who paid attention and waited what he did by getting pressure and ignored the sax because the pass rush is more than sacks. We know this we've seen this from just what we talked about of how a quarterbacks just under pressure perform significantly worse. So just getting pressure is good. That is what a pass rusher can really control. They cannot control the time that a quarterback gets the ball out. And that is continually decreasing quarterbacks are getting the ball out quicker. So pressure is all in Ed rusher can really control or any defender can really control. And when if the quarterback can get the ball quickly because the coverage on the back end is not holding. Up and there is someone opened quickly. When defender is getting in his face, then he's going to get the ball quickly. But the pass rusher still did his job and a lot of that was what happened to Vernon this past year? So I was big on keeping Vernon baby. Adding another piece to the pass rush. But not a significant piece where you had to go out and get someone who is going to be like the number of one edge rusher, you didn't need to do that. But what the giants did now is without Vernon. They've made a pass rush group that I think is way more Representative of their sack number that was tied for thirtieth. In fewer sacks than it is Representative of a group that was above average in pressure rate. But what that opens up? I guess is what we talked about. The last episode is some some blitz packages and in the James Becher system, and that is part of what this Pash rush. First coverage debate kind of comes. Into. And it will a pro football focus when they did their study counted came to a conclusion, and they did mention it's this nuanced debate. And it is that when they look at their grades, and you can wait those grades and put the amount of competence in those grades as much as you want. But it came out that do coverage grade had more predictive power going forward than and pass rush. Great did. But a you can bring up an example like New England really the biggest two free agents that New England has ever signed. We're Durell rebus and Stefan Gilmore this past season. Those are two shutdown corners to fund Gilmore was great this past season. They do not really invest heavily in the past rush. They are able to find these guys they can find guys like trae flowers who can get pressure..

"So if the giants play him in the slot. They could probably man him up against almost anyone in offense is going to put their and he's he'll probably stand. Pretty good chance of holding up. He's good at separating the receiver from the ball. That's a good thing. He's got really good ball skills to all in all this. This is it strikes me. This is a steel. Yeah. I don't want to just gloss over the ball skills either. So we had five interceptions in three years, but thirty nine passes defense, which is insane. He had twenty twenty seventeen as a sophomore. And then sixteen this past year as a junior, so he can get his hands on the ball. But what we look at the role. He played at Notre Dame. He was mostly an outside corner. That was about three quarters of his snaps were on the outside. He played twenty five point four percent in the slot per sports solution. So if he does move there in a more fulltime role that's going to be new to him. But I think he can handle it. He someone who was very good against man coverage. We thirty six point two percent positive play rate against him in man thirty six point two percent in zone. So those are good numbers for someone who is potentially moving to slot. Couple moving pieces in the secondary. That I think are. Going to benefit all of those pieces involved. Yeah. And interestingly the Andre Baker has experience in the slot as well. He played less often. I believe but Georgia did line him up there on occasion and insert in down in distance packages. But he didn't and he didn't reasonably well. So that does present some options, and maybe even some opportunities for a guy James Becher who does like to be able to move guys around. It's a bigger within the slot of thirteen point six percent of the time last year. So does have a Whittal bit of experience. That's better than zero percent. So yeah, it's it just gives you another option which I think is good especially as the draft happen end. The edge rushers kind of came off the board. And this was a deep class in edge rushers. But to a point where it was so deep a lot of talent went pretty early. So once you got past za Menez. To a point..

Dwayne Haskins Throws with Giants Attending Pro Day

"Lot of pro days going on this week twos. Day. A large giants contingent including defensive coordinator James Becher was at Alabama on Wednesday. The Ohio State pro day where Dwayne Haskins was of course, the center of attention was attended by another large contingent of giants representatives head coach Pat Shurmur couple of the scouts several of the assistant coaches there to check out, you know, the the many prospects, you know, that that attend Ohio State, and we're working out today. We heard that the giants also had had dinner on Tuesday night with Dwayne Haskins. I'm not sure what to read into all of that. I look at it. Like the giants are simply doing due diligence getting to know as much as they possibly can about all of these guys entering the draft. So and also on Thursday as I said coming up, the Missouri pro day withdrew lock. I would intimidate once again, a large contingent of giants representatives to be in Missouri to watch lock workout. So, you know, it's it's an interesting time. You think maybe there isn't a whole lot going on. You know, the the main part of free agency is done the draft is a few weeks away. But there are still things going on still lots of intrigue, you know. And you never know what's going to happen. You never know what Dave Gettleman might do. But an awful lot. You know, continuing to go on at this point in time.

"He's a guy who should you know, be productive for the giants for a year or two and should also have a good impact on his teammates. I also liked the Marcus golden signing obviously having sent alleviate Vernon to the Cleveland Browns having cut Connor bar win. You know, having been in a situation last year where they were second last in the league in in sack total they needed to Ed Ed rushers they need to add pass rush Marcus golden is a guy who had a lot of success playing four James Becher with the Zona cardinals in two thousand sixteen suffered a bad. Injury in two thousand seventeen came back. The middle of two thousand eighteen was slowed still as he recovered from that knee injury didn't play as well. The one year. Prove it deal is I think a terrific move because it gives the giants and opportunity to look at golden and see if he can still be that player that he was for James Becher in two thousand seventeen he's not an older guy. He still I believe, you know, twenty seven I don't have it in front of me. But I believe that's how old golden is either way in he's still in his in his later twenties guy who should still have a lot of good football in front of him. If he's healthy if he's back to the same type of of athletic player that he was for Becher in two thousand seventeen and again, what it does a lot. Like like, some of the other things that. We've talked about is it while the giants could still and probably should still, you know, look to add to the defensive line..

"You know, something that you just have to deal with the point should be in the end candidate Gettleman Pat Shurmur defensive coordinator, James Becher, Ken. They find players that make the New York Giants better that is their job. Now, they have chosen to move on from Landon Collins. So now, what do they do? The proof will be in. How this all turns out in the end in what the roster looks like in September. Can the giants go out and get a premier free safety? Someone like Adrian Amos, Ken, they if they can't get Amos can they bring in short term solution. Someone like Eric Weddell who was recently let go by the Baltimore Ravens, Ken. They fill that role. I mean, the James Becher defense needs a guy who can play that single high free safety. Contextual can get sideline to sideline. They simply didn't have that last year with Curtis Riley. And unfortunately as good a player as he is in the with the things that he can do that is not and Colin specialty either can they fill the Collins role. Whether that's with Michael Thomas, who's already who was with the giants last year with someone else, you know, that someone that they draft or someone who maybe they find in free agency who's a little bit less costly than Landon Collins, can they at least fill that role adequately. They've gotta find the edge rusher as we talked about. So really the time to be upset isn't now the time to really be upset will be after we see free agency after we see the draft. And if the giants haven't adequately addressed the holes that they have and the whole. That they just created by letting Landon Collins go believe me, I understand if the priority is if they want to spend big money on a safety. I understand if the priority would be to use that on a free safety rather than a box safety. I get that. But now they have to go out in find that guy convince him to come to New York and be right about the decision that they made. So it's not a popular move right now. It's probably not one that I would have made it's not one that I would have anticipated. I would have liked to have seen the giants. Find a way to keep Landon Collins to make him happy. I'm not buying the whole distractions thing that get them and talked about about how Collins would be unhappy. I'm not buying the the the the idea that they couldn't have worked it out financially. What it comes down to? I think. Is that Collins wanted more money than the giants were willing to pay because Collins wanted to be looked at maybe as a free safety. Maybe as a kind of player that the giants just don't see him as and it's up to the giants right now to prove themselves right by building. A better defense will just have to see how all of that works out. Okay. Giants fans. Let's take a quick break. When we come back. I will play for you an interview with Espy nations. Dan Cadore as we turn our attention to the two thousand nineteen NFL draft. Hello. I'm Spencer hall from Espy nation. And I want to tell you about my new show..

Giants are unlikely to franchise tag Landon Collins

"I will also say that I was in have been very much surprised over the past few days by what seems to be the giants willingness to allow Landon Collins to enter free agency Tuesday is the day when the giants have to decide whether or not to use the franchise tag on Collins to keep him from entering free agent. A week ago. I would have said that I thought it was pretty certain that the giants would do that. After listening to Dave Gettleman on Wednesday in Indianapolis. I'm not so sure I think that Gettleman talked a lot about distractions. He talked a lot about how upset players get when you use the tag on them. He talked an awful lot about eliminating distraction. He talked a lot about the financial ramifications of using the tag on Collins, and what that would do to the giants ability to improve their team and use their their Capri sources, you know, in free agency in other things. So to me, you know, I've been a little bit surprised over the past few months to be honest with you that there seems to be somewhat. Of disconnect between Collins in the giants. At least I have the impression that there is that they don't quite see things the same way, whether that's Collins value, whether that's the position in how he should be used you know on the field by defensive coordinator, James Becher. But I just don't think that the relationship between Collins and giants management is as healthy or as good as one would hope that it would be. A veteran scout told me that he thinks the consensus around the league at this point. Is that the giants will not tag Collins that they will allow him to test the free agent market. And at this point, I have to agree with that. It's you know, much to my surprises. I said I would not have felt that way a week ago. But I think that I think that Collins is going to be allowed to test the market, and we'll see what that does to the giants defense will see how that we'll see how all of that plays out soon enough.

"Agent signing in twenty sixteen. He had a great twenty sixteen had eight non create twenty seventeen remember him not showing up after the bye last year. No one questioned his will to play this year. But he just he did not play very well. And they behind him. They started the season with apple who had a rough first half of the season. Then got traded to New Orleans that moved be w Webb who did not play in the NFL last year that moved him from nickel corner to the outside corner that put grant Haley in with more snaps as the starting nickel corner. So as just everything moved down. There was not enough quality death to boost their what of the. Reasons the giants pass rush of like we said in the beginning. Also, it's something I wrote in that piece on the differences between the giants pass rush and the patriots pass rushers which were very similar the patriots. Just had a better secondary to cover up when there was pressure. The giants on we didn't even allow a yard fewer with pressure then without pressure a yards per tempt. And that is almost unheard of. They had a higher touchdown allowed when they dot pressure. Then they did without pressure. That is unheard of. I that's all because the secondary just could not hold up. So her solutions and football outsiders among eighty five qualified Cornerbacks. Jenkins was seventieth in yards allowed per pass and seventieth insect. Sess rate web was fully second in yards per pass. And he was an eighteenth insect cesary alive. Of that came when he was working in the slot earlier in the season here. We was fifty eighth in yards allowed per pass and seventy first insect cesary. So when you just have corners that are all holding up on a point of play basis, I into very hard for everyone else to do that. Yeah. And Jenkins would have stretches where he looked like the player he was in twenty sixteen. He got he was hurt for pretty much all twenty seventeen he was playing through a succession of injuries, which that didn't come out until either very close to the end of the twenty seventeen season. Or after it ended that just how many lower leg injuries he was playing through. But then he would just give up a big play now because of some other things and not knowing what the. That covered that was called. Or what the responsibilities were? I'm not going to exactly kill him because some of them. I'm sure weren't his fault which we will get to that in our in our next spot. When I think was good for a player who wasn't in the league the year before. But I'm still not comfortable relying on him to be. The number two corner for another year. He would have a good savvy play. But then he would also have reps that showed why he wasn't in the league the year before I think most of the hope here is with grant Haley who I think played better than pretty much. Anyone could have asked for being an undrafted free agent rookie. But like you said the they need better coverage especially to run the kind of defense that James Becher wants to run. They're not running a zone based kind of sit back on wait for the offense to make a mistake defense. They run a pressure defense and you need to have a secondary. That can hold up in coverage. I that that's just it. Yeah. Web was a nice piece and he did exceed expectations. But again, he's someone if you're projecting toward twenty nine thousand nine. Yeah. He's someone you want as that death Pete's and not number two quarter. Which is what he was at the end of last year the same thing for Hayley. He came in. He played a pretty well a little bit as the season. We're on a thing team started to pick on him a little more. And then that's where he started to struggle. I don't think a lot of that is on him. When you're using a win on drafted free agent. Like that that's not always going to work out. He's not going to be expected to shutdown everyone. I think just personally I liked the way he played. I liked him coming out of college. So I do have hopes for him projecting going forward. But you you have to think about all that and adjust the the lack of quality the giants had there is what stands out to me is really that that second..

"And and this is something that has just been a week wide thing. And you see the what's look at. I think we can also bring in to what the chargers did over the weekend at this was one of my takeaways of the wildcard game they played what exclusively with seven defensive backs on the field. So if you're doing math that seven defensive backs and four of their defensive lineman. So they had four really defensive linemen rushing the passer, and then they took to the the ravens running game. And they match speed with speed of defenses have gone against the ravens who are so run heavy with Lamar Jackson, and they've stayed in base or nickel with just one extra defensive back. But they've get they don't have the speed. And the ravens were able to run pass them. With the chargers did against the ravens is they had all these defensive backs on the field. They had three safeties on the field for every play. And they were just able to match the raven speed us a when you look at that. You should be building these defenses around speed. And I think the giants have kind of done that you look at who they drafted this year. We're rental quarter was the top edge rusher by spark. He was still little raw in terms of of edge production. A, but the when you have someone who is that athletic that that's that's a good sign. So if James Becher, I think can can get a little more of his influence there. I think that could be a good step for the giants going forward as they look to probably get some more talent on the defensive side of the ball. Definitely. I I think and definitely based on how. Gettleman responded in his press conference. This is going to be a defense heavy off season for the giants. They've they're drafting highly in a defense heavy draft. We'll see what happens with the quarterback position. But if they elect to not take a quarterback at six were all it is very likely that they will be drafting defensive player, and he's probably going to be a very athletic one. It's unlikely that they will that there will even be an anaphylactic defender there to draft. That's true that I think that is a good sign, and again, we have been breaking some of these guys down on our college and draft shell but said multiple times on that show. How much of our evaluation is going to be in some of those numbers and that athletic testing, so at that is going to be something to watch out for as it goes forward. But I think that that was my Cowboys takeaway. But I think that really goes to so many defenses that were successful in this team. But I think one other takeaway we saw even from this weekend is that the offense is so much more important than defense. I if you have a good offense. It really does not matter how good or bad your defense is so right now we have eight teams left in the playoffs. Yes. Five of those teams or in the top five of ofensive Devia way this season zero of those teams remaining we're in the top five of defensive de away this season. I think we saw that in in a bunch of places the bears had the best defense in the week by four this season. It was not even remotely close. But their offense was not great. They were only twentieth. In authentic Devia way on Mitchell Trubisky was not great this season. And you saw through the first three quarters of before they scheme some open receivers late in the fourth quarter..

"Gotta give James Becher a lot of credit because that was an all out blitz. And that was one on one down the field. Yes. It was. And that is a risk and janoris Jenkins made a really good play if chase Daniel's stroz that ball to the right further where Tele Gabriel can go and get it. Maybe they got a shot. But that's put the pressure on the opposing team's backup quarterback doing it at the right moment. So James betcha gets a big hug from Pat Shurmur after the game because it was a gutsy call and chase, Geno. Couldn't quite step into that throw because who had the pressure Alec Ogle tree two interceptions in the game yesterday. Yes. Yes. He did. And that was Bob Papa here on her. And that was after all Jack SaaS put the giants ahead with a forty four yard field goal in the extra session. That was also after the giants had blown a ten point lead in the final minute and change of regulation to recall into Anthony Miller little Phillies special variety to get the bears into the end zone as time expired in the fourth quarter. But Pat Shurmur team hangs in there to get the victory. What was his post-game message to swear words out of it? But you know, some people are fond of talented people. Some people are fond of smart people. I'm fond of tough resilient people. I mean. That's a lot of talent there. Pat, Shurmur, actually. On them. Do the audio did. Now the giants have right now have the seventh overall draft pick in the NFL. So they keep kind of like, you know, going down. And the jets are going up all the way up to number three you go in for Shurmur just building off of that last cut. We heard there nobody tougher than his second year kicker as the Rosa's man crush continue or kicker, and I'm fond of who he is as a football player because he's not just the kicker football player on a fine. "And that will always be helpful successful. I'm very interested to see Carson is he gonna stand in the pocket lead things kind of collapse around him. She gonna escape because we've been wanting to see. A few more escapes from him. I've been more proactive pocket movement on Sunday. We haven't seen. So I love that to be able to come out for Carson. That'd be great this week. Yeah. On what you look at. When when you're looking at this Washington Redskins defense in you kinda lose I agree with you as as far as matching up verse four guys coming after you. I think that this line is going to be able to hold up. I can see the issues that you're of which you speak about the Amal dealing with power because Ron Payne and Jonathan Allen can can really mess you up in that way. But we look at this Redskins defense in you mentioned third-down, medium third down and long. Their defense is bad. But it gets really good when they're in a position to blit. So on the year, they ranked twenty eighth with forty three percent allowed on third down. But you move it to just pulled this up here from NFL LA NFL matchup third long defense the Redskins. Our sixth actually tied for fifth with the Steelers on third long defense because. They are able to dial up those blitzes and really come after you. And what makes all last week? Was that the giants win? They blitz. The eagles. We talked about this. But James Becher the giants defensive coordinator game with thirty two percent. Blitzing two sacks one point eight yards per play in a twenty percent opposing success rate from the eagle so they have been struggling against the blitz. So that's something that you could see in obviously, the key for the eagles with that is not getting yourself into third long situations. Luckily for the eagles the Redskins despite that real that they have up front despite some good line linebacker play from Zac Brown despite the end in the terrible play from Mason foster. This is a team that is struggling with officiency on the ground twenty six or twenty eight something like that inefficiency for delay in the last three games are allowing something like five or six yards per carry. So you can run on them. And I think we we were talking about it before the show some of it has to do with the fact that these defense. Lyman aren't really penetrators Jonathan Allen, and Doron pain or more the two gap ING type, so they're gonna hold things up in the linebackers have to come and clean it up which is area where I think the Redskins have struggled a little bit more. What do you expect from the ground game because Josh Adams having twenty two carries last week, which is really an outlier for the eagles. Historically. Would you expect more run from the eagles early to try to get that a stab wished quote, unquote? Or would you expect them to just like throw it out in a drive? See if it's working in kind of stick with it later on when the passing game isn't clicking for them. Yeah. I'm never going to expect Peterson to all of a sudden care about Salish on the run early. That is ever once been his way remotely I'd do not into the bait that changing now I look at this Washington defense. And while I acknowledge that they're statistically port against the run to me. It's still a very it's still a tricky defense run against I should say specifically up. Middle of that you're going to have the strength with pain with Jonathan Allen. I think they have very strong there on the interior. And if we're talking about linebackers with movement skill problems like Mason foster will you wanna get him in space. You don't want to be dealing with him in a phone booth whether as much room to evade him again Philidelphia does not really have that vase of guy on the roster. But potentially they do with Darren sproles coming back. So you don't really know..

"That doesn't give me a lot of confidence. But no, James Becher said grant Haley, and Sean Chandler or going to be. Getting some more time in the slot. Haley was an undrafted free agent. He was the guy the giants made a pretty big effort to sign after the draft. They gave him one of the largest signing bonuses, you can give in undrafted free agent. I liked him a lot during training camp. And he had a little bit of an up and down preseason. He was released during the final fifty three man cuts but signed to the practice squad. He was brought up to the active roster last week only played three snaps on defense. But he'll get a little more time there. He was really good at Penn State. He's only five nine he played actually more outside Penn State. It was like a sixty forty split between outside into slot. But he was also really good in the slot allowed less than fifty percent. Completion percentage when he was there. So he'll get a little more time hearing Sean Chandler's going to play a little bit in the slot. Surprised me? He's been on the roster. The whole time. Think he's played one defensive snap this year, but he was an undrafted player out of temple. That's where I went to school. So I watched him quite a bit. He played a lot of safety. So slot quarter was not something I would expect for him. But I guess that's where the secondary depth is right now that hey, let's see how this works because really nothing else has at this point yet. He did have a little bit of experience at corner. So I wonder if they might be thinking about using him similar to how they have used Curtis Riley a little bit him played free safety, and then have him and Landon Collins kind of switch if they're going to go for a man blitz. Have the better coverage safety down in the box to cover a tight end running back. Have you wall Collins is going back in the deep center, which isn't where you'd want him all the time. But given the choice that's probably better to have the better coverage safety up in man coverage or the guy who is better in zone coverage in zone coverage. It's actually something. The Jacksonville Jaguars do when they run a mand Litz usually on third downs at this point see Renault's preseason. Yeah. Play around see what works because what had been going on a hasn't been working. So. We'll see also will also see how Tony with that fits into this rotation. Once he gets maybe accustomed to the defense who were maybe potentially healthy because he did miss twenty seventeen within the Killys tear. So he was a fifth round pick of the dolphins in twenty fifteen. He started thirteen games in twenty sixteen. He was he's actually a converted wide receiver. He played receiver in college. At Michigan state. I actually liked him a lot as a possession receiver type of guy when he was coming out. But he played a little bit of cornerback at Michigan state. They converted him at the combine. And he was drafted as a cornerback. So he made some strides there. So he has some upside he still only twenty six so there's some development that can come. If you're talking about the players, you have potential upside that's probably as big as a guest on this Rosser. Right now. So depending on where his health is with that achilles. I know he worked out for the giants like either before week one or right after week one and nothing happened. But I guess they stayed in contact with a need for defensive death. Now is when they signed him. So he could be definitely an interesting piece just to see and get a test run out least through the end of the season. Definitely. He has the length that game spectrum really likes in his corners, learning, generally a pressman. Or at least a man covered scheme haven't that left? Length is good for wideout. He's gotta have ball skills. Always liked to joke. When a interception bounces off defensive backs hands. They well that's why you're playing defense not offense. Well, he used to play offense. And he was good. I remember like him a lot coming out as well. In twenty sixteen. He had four interceptions and ten passes defense, which are pretty good numbers for a quarterback..

"Big numbers, there's inflated numbers. I thought owed back from junior played good. When the ball was in his area. He made all of his catches you drop one. I think, but I wouldn't even count that a drop on the two point play attempt that you know, the ball was behind him. It's just it's frustrating. It's all emanates. I'm saying on offense at emanates. You know, it's a. You gotta you gotta be OB accurate. You gotta stand in the face of pressure. You know, Matt Ryan was under pressure to James Becher was blitz and all night, long Johns. I love the fact that he was aggressive, and I'm sure the giants defensive players like the two there were a couple of really inopportune penalties for the giants the holding on UI apple. But then they come back. They get a fumble. That was great. I mean, they were all over the for the most part all over the falcons. And and I liked the aggressive play calling. I liked the blitzing. And I am betcha was like, you know, once they couldn't handle a blitz where we're going to stay with the blitz. And then once they figured it out. You saw Matt Ryan buying time and hitting shallow crosses and dropping it off and thrown at the guys who are open because of the matchup problems. I don't know. I don't know what to tell you, man. You can't. Again, you can't score over thirty points in a league where everybody with the exception of maybe a handful of teams or scoring over thirty points. Because that's the way the league is built, and yeah, I know there's pressure. I know that Nate soldiers not been great. I know that they have a problem over there. Here in Hernandez are having problems just dealing with the most basic of pass rush maneuvers by the opposing teams. I know all that. But still you have Odell Beckham junior. You have Evan Ingram. You have sterling Shepard. And you have frigging saquon Barkley, and you are not scoring. And it's it's mind boggling to me that in this league with those athletes that you cannot score. And it's you know, it's a play here or play there that bogs somebody down. It's either a sack or it's an offense a holding penalty or two missed wide open receiver or it's a drop pass. And they cannot get any sort of momentum going door. In the game off pensively. It's it's so frustrating to watch because other teams around the league with standout quarterbacks and with quarterbacks that have been in this league are doing it. Yeah. This is a game last night that if most defenses in the NFL gave the same game that the giants defense did their offense to win the game. Almost every time an offense with personnel that don't even match the giants talent. And by the way, by the way that offense for Atlanta. I know I know there was a couple of big plays. Of course, the big pass play for a touchdown. And then to the Tevin Coleman Ron where they broke those. But I mean outside of that the giants defense held in in against the Atlanta Falcons that was fighting for their season in their building with a guy. And Matt Ryan was putting up numbers that rival he's MVP in some instances are even better. He's on a better pace than that. The defense played well enough to win and you had an opportunity to win this game. But you're coming up short in a red zone in the second quarter on second down. You've got old L Beckham junior in the corner of the endzone people can discuss whether or not Odell was in the wrong spot or it was a bad throw by alive. But that's a connection that you need to make in the end zone. You could put up big numbers. There's an old L play their own. I'll play here. That's the one you need to connect on in the end zone at that point in the game in the second quarter. Then on third down. He's sitting back there and waiting and waiting and waiting and boom takes the sack and of course, have to kick the field goal. And then the ESPN. Broadcast. He's pointing out how everybody is covered. But yet, I think it was Evan Ingram optical back. And look, but there is a guy. All right in the middle of the field. And they say look you had no place to throw the pole. What are you nuts? He did have a place.

"Perkins. Actually, we were going to ask you. If late Johnson did it start. I wanted to hear you pronounce their new right tackle, we'll save that for later on in the program. Well, I don't know about that. Jeff we may put you to the test urgency's a receiver. Let's face. It does lead the NFL it targets for tight ends. But he's their top than the NFL of any players in reception. So they go to save it over to the giants will win the chart over battle. They want the turnover battle just once in the first five games at no coincidence. It's the low game that they actually want it Houston against the Texas. Let's start with you, Paul. Well, you consider that the eagles have thirteen fumbles this year, which is an NFL high wenches fumbled the ball once in each of the three games that he has played there benign nine different eagles to fumble bowl this year. There's no question in my mind. The giants will win this turnover. Battle fact, I'm gonna fiction here. I think lost fumbles oftentimes can be a matter of chance. Now, there's a number of total fobel's I mentioned a sixteen but seven of those have been lost which is by far the most in the NFL. I think that regulates itself a little bit. That's really the reason. The eagles are two or three right now. They're minus four turnover ratio. Only two teams. I believe are worse than them. And in the NFL this year. I think that balances out a little bit tonight. Giants have trouble getting to the quarterback even with Olivier Vernon back. And if you can't get to the quarterback, it's hard to force turnovers. I think with the Livia Vernon that like you said earlier James Becher, I think he's chomping at the bit hit those little chapters. He gets into the chap Zoro the day foaming at the mouth describing giants really the coming off a big turnover game last week. And I like the way that this defense is gonna play young running backs weather last year. The eagles were really good. In this category. This year, they're they're not I'm gonna go fast. But he's about Vernon allowed the blitz more. I think blitzing is controlled by how much you trust your secondary. And I'm not sure how much you can trust your secondary. At this point with the way, they played the last couple of weeks. So I mean, he doesn't have to to get get there. He can still has award so far. Well, he hasn't played so far. True. But he also Jason Peters who's pretty darn good. And it's not as bad as. What I understand. It's important to note. The eagles have not won the turnover battle at all this season in their five games. They've been tied twice. But they have yet to actually they think they've allowed. What fifteen sacks in the last three games of not mistaken? Maybe six twelve twelve has been sacked twelve times three games. They've had protected issues. Whether it's Nick foles or cards whites David over three. Speaking of Carson Wentz. He's going to throw for more yards. He li- manning. His average queue seventy-five manic to fifty one men's though wet six gives me has thrown for more yards of the opposing quarterback at all three of his games this season. Let's start with you, John. This is a fact middle of the field. Ten plus yards in the air. Carson Wentz is twelve for seventeen this year for toured you eighty eight yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions. He will attack the middle of the field with those tight ends. And also look out for Nelson. They like running him on deep patterns in the post over the middle. They will challenge the giants linebackers and safeties which I think coverage wise is where the giants probably struggle. The most lap. George Jenkins do a pretty good job. So I think this has to be factor. I think whence gives the giants a lot of issues in the middle of the field. How about you Paul? Well, whence is throwing the ball minimum of thirty five times in each of his three games because the eagles don't have much of a running game. They beat him to throw it about forty times tonight. So just by process of elimination. He'll throw it about forty times. Eli may throw it about thirty one times. So I'll say that once we'll have more yards. This was a tough one. I this is a tough one because I think go either way, obviously. But the weather to me was was something that it was going to determine this pick for me right now. It doesn't look very bad. So I'm gonna go I'm gonna go. Just before you do this. I'm gonna help you ally has been a very good passer. A bad rainy weather. I liked for his career. And he's also been good against the eagles. The last couple of years, and he's also going to be really good against Jalen, Milton. Bradley Roby tonight, those two combined fifty five receptions, five hundred sixty five I could throw a touchdown on them. I'm going fact here..

"And I think that there's some enticing pieces in place on offense. Don't love the defense. You have issues potentially a quarterback. If if you know ally manning could fall apart at any moment and no backup to save the day, no backup. So it's just that let's hold off a little bit because I think that there are a couple of players way before they're going to challenge in a very tough NFC. So you're out on July MRIs. I'm not out on ally in the way that western Greg historically route because I think that he's probably at some point going to find a way to win one more Super Bowl over the patriots, and we'll be there to watch it. But but yes, I don't think the playoffs going on. I think James Becher their coordinator was kind of a sneaky big pick up and they do have players on that side. It's a little like. They have stars and then they have big drop-offs, but they're dangerous. I feel like they're that any team in that division could make the playoffs that wouldn't shock me. The giants were my choice to the chiefs are good. The niners. Niners. I was gonna say the buccaneers because they do have talent. They've got talent at the skill positions on offense. They've got a really interesting front seven now and I don't trust anything about the quarterback coach dynamic. Let's fair. I would go at the Niners cut because of the defense and because it almost came not because it came to easily last year just because I, I think the Anka's the giants are gonna steal their wildcard spot in your right and the problems that they've had over the last few years. Kyle Shanahan and grapple fix like a lot of them, but they don't fix the whole team. I guess I'll throw out my other one. The the away says, the blur nasty Brit pop viewed of the mid nineties award that could go to Oakland raider fans and this current raiders regime, and it's something to keep an eye on how this, how this can turn if this gets ugly because you can from an organizational standpoint, even though I disagree and I think you guys all agree that or all disagree with their decision to not keep Khalil Mack who's like a once in a generation talent and a at a position where it's almost impossible to get a guy at that. Level, but I just think that if they got off to a slow start. If they got off to a slow start, the fans are gonna turn on that team coach and organizationally, yes, you have to first round picks coming. That doesn't do anything for these people in Oakland who kinda got banged a little bit here and I could see them really hand, you know, dishing out some vitriol. If this team gets off to a slow, start making it a really ugly season in Oakland. The thing I never bought to begin with was that, hey, let's give these Oakland fans to really nice seasons before, hey, we just moved your team to Las Vegas, but.

"They're known for the the Tyree catch and you point out all the often, but the reason that you you won two Super Bowls was the defensive line. And yeah, the offense is skill position looks cool, and that makes you want to draft a guys for fantasy football, but for a team to win. You gotta have a legit defense and it starts up front compare and contrast this, this offense, a skill group off the charts on. Paper. What about the defense, especially upfront? That's the one thing that concerns me. They don't have a lot of proven commodities at the edge rusher position. I mean, you have alleviate Vernon and a lot of other possibles now you bought in Connor bar went for depth. I think that was a sneaky. Good move by the giants. He's been a consistent player on the field. But more importantly, I think he's going to be great in the locker. And yet those guys drafted Lorenzo Carter out of Georgia athletic guy will see what James Becher does in terms of high deploys them how to utilize him, but it's it's got to be more than just smoke and mirrors. So James Becher has got his work cut out for them. And that's one of the things I'm looking to see how that plays out in the preseason. "Of Torres somebody coming right off the disabled list I probably would have made the? Same decision myself what's your what's your football point the joint? I think we're going to score a lot of points I've been join fan since as long as I've been Yankee fan what do you think of the joints defense has been a lot of changes made. Do you think the the enough pass rush Whole teams down you know since we've made a lot of changes on defensive? Line also pickups in the wind back or Well let's start with I I think maybe the most significant pickup on defense. The, giants made is James Becher the defensive coordinator, who I like a lot coming. Over from, the cardinals and his style he's he's obviously switching the, giants to a three four base defense But in today's NFL you don't pay the base defense the majority of the time the majority of the time you're probably out. There, with extra DB's in all kinds of other, different looks but So number one I like better I. Like the defensive coordinator the other thing to know when you mentioned pass. Rush is two things one no I don't think the giants, have enough pass rushers but I do like the recent pickup a lot of Connor bar win the. Outside linebacker who is a pass rusher bar wins a guy who, was drafted. By the Texans then came and played with the eagles for a, few years played last season with. The LA Rams and I think he's a guy who has, experienced in a three four defense I think that's going to help. The pass rush and then we're they don't have enough pass rushers I think Becher is a guy he blitzes more than basically I think, last season more than any other coordinator in the league so I think. We're gonna see a lot of blitzing and a lotta guys coming from a lot, of different positions to pressure the quarterback and so far at least in practice from what I gather the. D Defense has been out playing the offense so far in in practice. And so I think you are going to see a lot of, pressure and. I think you are going to certainly see improved linebacker play with, the addition of guys like Alex. Ogle tree bar win if PJ Goodson can stay healthy so, I think that all of those are improvements to the defense defense. Will be better I really do I think the defense is not look coming off the last season there's not too many ways they could, be worse eleven eighteen when I come back how about this Sam darnold Hold up after the break after. "That that this is my new bread and butter this is exactly in my opinion what the giants are going to do not to mention like i'm not even saying that saquon barkley is gonna get you know fifteen hundred rushing yards i don't know what he's gonna get he is going to be a yard from scrimmage guy i had one scout around the combine say this is the best college back as a receiver that i've ever seen and not only that but sean payton told me this is the best running back prospect i've seen in twenty five years how many yards from scrimmage does he need to have for us to say after the fact you know what he was worth the second overall eighteen hundreds that's a lot it is you know what that means that means he's eleven hundred rushing and seven hundred receiving which is not unrealistic if he's going to catch sixty balls he's going to get around seven hundred yards receiving so i don't think that's unreasonable at all stats give us another one all right mike i'll start with you with this one then saquon barkley since you brought him up peter and a returning oto beckham junior make the giants a blank team i you know i don't nine and seven yeah i say potential wildcard team so nine and seven same we're in agreement on that chris simms thinks they can make it to the superbowl now i just think he's sucking up to his dad when he says that but he thinks they can become a super bowl team was saquon barkley i think a lot of that depends on the revival of the defense and you know and right now the key guy with the new york giants in my opinion i think their offense is going to be fine too key guy on this team in my opinions james becher because he is bringing a new philosophy a new style to that defense.
