"The hedgehog says that great that great scene re blows out the match and then suddenly. It's a hedgehog. What a magical movie moment. Tara reid apparently tweeted about this movie making fun of the poster self. So that's great school. Yeah file judgments. This is a bad movie a bad movie or movie we kind of like. I definitely did not like this movie. I'll put that. I'll go on. I think if i had seen this with like a group of friends this would be a good bad movie as it was like just Audrey myself watching it this morning out of a sense of duty because for some reason we have the podcast where we talked about hedgehog movies among other things. I didn't enj- joy even as a bad movie. I there's something weirdly like grim about it like there's a sadness about this movie. I feel like i don't know like this movie. You mean. was it too much too much. Whimsey too much family friendly places one of these like like kids movies that you can just feel like the cynicism of the person who made it whether it's like. I dunno kids. Watch whatever crap. Let's get some washed up actors and and it'll be fine. Whatever will make a move just like there's an unpleasantness bled through to the screen. But what you guys think. I don't know i i actually. I had a fun time watching this dumb movie. I think it. I think this is a solid good bad movie. I feel like it'd be fun to watch with a group. It's very stupid. it doesn't other than the we like. there's two there's way too much shaming but other than that it's like fairly innocuous except for like you have to see dean cain stupid face all the time but yeah i mean it's a it's it's dumb. It's like talking care. yeah i would. I'm also can have to put this in the good bad. It would be fun to watch with a group category. I think one of the things that makes that way for me is their kids in it but the kids are not terrible. The kids are fine. And so like i never felt like i laughing at them. Which would make you feel bad but it. Is there something about this movie. Where at every at every it wants to tell the simplest story a girl makes a.

That stewart which apparently i got to go back and watch want run. Don't walk home movie okay. Thank god invented the credit started. And i guess. I do have to watch these. Because they are interest. Weird voice over the director talking shit about everyone. It was as if knew everyone will have walked out of the one theatre shows this one time for qualify for an husker at one time. Was it the con film festival. It played at sperry's moviehouse according to a pedia in huron michigan in two thousand eighteen. Was this before or after the director did a couple episodes of what was that show. Yeah kenya realtors or something. There was as what is director done. Otherwise and he did two episodes of a show called spunky airlines now theoretically there thirteen episodes but there are only two listed on. I'm db and i don't know. I i think this is probably not an actual. Tv show but something. that was I don't know streaming somewhere small but it has a very wacky cartoon plane that has hunky on it and big cartoon letters and then like a very put upon looking man with I guess they're a bunch of flight attendants random. What dan pitch to me. What you think that. What do you think that is what is funky airlines. I don't understand well. I hope it has nothing to do with cheers fear. I assumed that it wasn't come related. But who knows. Only one way to find out i guess but dan. Okay okay. then it's me the one that is related to make reference to another max flame. Show join jesse go. Spunk is a come word As they would know okay but Yeah yeah they would Don't say anything on that show. I mean the the jisr related one would be this. Is you know they have to. This is an airline that specializes in a sperm donor. Transplant transport for the transfer corned for the league. Items in question. Your regular rubber tire didn't want to say that. I said it accidentally and i had to call myself out for it and you had to repeat it you you you. You were describing the poster for what spunky airlines. But i also want to say if you're interested in at all check out the poster for this movie. It is fantastically photoshop. It's great horse on it and there's no horse in this movie at all..

The trailers seem to be the pledge allegiance. I pledge allegiance bitch to the flag. So we have this. You're gonna make this movie. This is your ticket to features. Come on yeah we ever seen in the kitchen of course where the mother is preparing dinner. And andy asks melissa. Like what are you cooking. And she says sushi and that was the last thing. I was expecting your. Oh man it was great okay so the next day they the teenagers bring andy to the science show. Which seems to be this kind of free form thing happening in the cafeteria. You get your volcano etc. Before they go up of course lily is like okay. Fuck it. I wish he can't talk anymore. I'm debbie did. We miss the part. Where lily brings andy to the school and some girls are bullying her and andy. 'cause one of the girls fat i didn't i missed that part of that shocked me. That's crazy girls are bullying lily and andy's like you shouldn't say mean things about her fat and i was like what the fuck off dude the but then later she wants. She goes later. She she can. I pet andy and she does and it was like. Oh any the hedgehog knows the game obviously under mystery. He's yeah he's nagging here. He's been watching f boy island. I've been watching if we want to talk about halfway island. Okay well i have so many. I don't wanna go all the way to it. And i have so many questions to choose which ones are the f. boys and which ones are the what looking looking for love you know and The there's twenty four contests and you get added spoiler and half of them are nice guys. Half of them are f- boys and the boys are just in it for the money so if they get picked at the end they're like i just got the money sucker and they have to eliminate people you tweak and when they eliminated we find out if they're nice guys are f- boys. "I just want to say that for listeners i. It was a delight to see jim face. When react to elliott's. Fred let's see lilly goes to the bathroom. She really has to go back to fairyland so she has another attempt to have lily. Change your wish no dice yet. The i really don't understand why she so resistant to changing her. Wish considering that it is obvious that her dad is having a breakdown as the basis of i mean i don't i don't have any small children so i don't know if they're stubborn. Difficult to deal with guys. Nope always i. Don't know about your your experience. My children are always like. Yeah whatever you saved dad. That's what i wanna do. Let's do it dinner. Yes definitely kids. Love to be obedient to do what. Their parents say That's just how it goes bedtime. I'm way ahead of you. I'm already in the bed. That's five times today okay. Let's rush my teeth. I love it. Hey can i do homework now. They love to do it at this point. My both of my sons are anytime anything as mentioned they go. No even if it's something they like and want or like let's go get the ice cream and they're like let's stay home but if we were like let's say they'd say let's go get ice cream there just a couple of real. Contrary zoro's i guess christopher hitchens you have a i hope not So lily takes andy to school. Andy charms everybody at school even the bullies a little bit but this is weird because later on there's a a the plot is to bring andy talking hedgehog to the science show. Yeah as some kind of science thing and if she's already brought the hedgehog like what's the over as well because everyone was like what a talking. I mean i guess to be excellent school versus the high school where the cheerleaders were. It's an all in one school. It's a very small community as we've seen there's like twenty school teachers. My issue was that he had a science fair. Usually you've got prove something like you're like. I built a thing or i'm going to show that this. Does i have an experiment. This is literally just like we found a hedge that talks like d. minus You don't you didn't have anything to do this. You know what's your whatever on my hypothesis is that sometimes hedgehogs can talk bitch. Well now. you're definitely getting unacceptable. Stop dabbing you're getting enough. Also freddie goes to this ice school well. Here's my experiment. Is i wanted to see if you put sugar and water. If it made plants grow better. And i guess it kinda does surrender. Learn more about teens around often killing teams. That are reminded me. I never got my high school. Never chase my back to school and now the teens i'm used to killing are killing me. Socially they just won't let me be harder than rooms. Oh man it's so hard being again. It was already hard being me. Because i'm a i'm a. I'm a criminal deviant who is hardly scored in a fire and i kind of dream demon. I mean he should just change his wardrobe. It's pretty simple. that's why it's called. It's called a diurnal street. Ultimate nightmare for freddie's ultimate nightmare school..

"We might have to see the screen. Haven't watched them on his phone. You just to piss off christopher. He's watching the animated version of dunkirk. She describes as duck pig. Two guys who go boom do each other that's done. He says he's caught up with the with the duck in pig or whatever. I'm like i don't think assuming that you're talking about working. Happy new developments. Recently i mean we saw one of the most recent one a couple of episodes back but otherwise they've been hibernating his wife. They're doing dan when they're not in cartoons hibernating somewhere there's like a cave on the warner brothers lot that forty begging done and daffy duck sleeping in right. Now they're in stasis in the center of the earth. Everyone knows this. Meanwhile melissa his wife is worried that dean canes behavior which now includes acting like a dog for some reason is due to him skipping breakfast her want as we have seen her interaction with other characters. Very breakfast focus. Yes she likes all about now. The bad guys are still hiding in house garage this whole time. Yeah okay now. it's bedtime. Is that when she walks in on them like collapsed on top of each other. The garage door works. And it's at that point i would. I don't care if you're in a relationship that's great but please not in my garage with telling me. What are you doing here. exactly what are you doing. Well what were there for in the first place always seen them do as wander around and set up a ladder. Like what we're going undone ruin they're supposed to be They pitched roof cleaning the gutters. Who are these guys to begin with when you bring a contractor in you. Expect them to do one thing but then they find a bunch of other things need to be fixed. Truly needs to be kidnapped yes. Stir you say it's bedtime. I just wanted to know. The the the andy voiceover says now. Our story goes to later. That night guy told me because of the establishing shot of a dark house i would have been so confused. I would've been like get extinguished. The it's like. It's like in wally and the computer that controls the the sky of the climate bubble there in just abruptly switched. Tonight's that they all have to go by now. So the cheerleaders. I guess are having a sleepover in the same house. They briefly talk about a car accident story that i would like to hear more about and then they spend time which which seems to be based on on a true story because during the credits they talk about the actress having hit another another characters car with her car so i wonder if that if that is them talking about a real thing credits..

"They kidnap andy. Lillies gotta get andy back and goes after him but they just they just want around that house forever passing up opportunity after opportunity to pick up that hedgehog walk away with him boggled my mind how little they have ever they were putting into this ten dollars to tell the cheerleaders twice that. There's termites house to get them out of the room. Termites necessitate a freak out like roaches. Or maybe that's the cheerleaders. Also they have wooden legs. Yeah business to be in those high kick. Sometimes you just you kick in your leg. Just flies right off all the forest. Replace it as the kids. Go to school dean. Cain returns home in as dan mentioned before a very foggy morning. I'm assuming he turned back because he realized there are things in the thought. Yeah well he. He was going to his work beyond the borderlands. Because they live in the house on the borderlands. I guess the pig men forced him turn back. The fog wall of raven law dean. Cain returns he has forgotten something he ends up talking to whiskers he realizes that whiskers can talk but he thinks that he is having a mental breakdown. That whiskers is not actually talking. And that he's been working too hard. That was evidenced by him walking in while talking on his cell phone. Doing some business bitch stuff in the movies. Shorthand for works too much. yep wear a suit. Have a cell. Phone is called a sports agent. That's it means you work too much with your family. I hate having phone call. Scott i never i i would want to get all my business on overtaxed so the okay so the crooks have to hide under the bed while dean. Cain hangs out with handy. There's some more bits. Dean cain Somehow here's terror read and her boss talking is they're coming with a plan on how to figure out how to do away with this. They realized that they have to get the little girl to do. Like a counter wish dean. Cain takes andy to bed chair. Lures lily into the magical school bathroom and try and labor's the wish and i don't get it now when you say takes him to bed it they take a map. It's not a lot like you can talk. You can give consent. Let's do this sandy. I mean there's a lot of implied sexuality between end canes bob. I mean if if the mom can't escape the kitchen dean. Cain might just be lonely in that bedroom. That's very true melissa's gone through a lot. She's got her own her like her file. Actor is inside the a kitchen. She can't go too far from it. Okay now and she also is not. It's we don't know where she is during this time when dean cain comes back and his and these crazy she is just maybe she's sleeping in the refrigerator or something like that in her kitchen apartment..

"Say like the wish that the kid makes seems pretty offhand. Just like you know the way you might just like walk outdoors and be like oh man. I wish the weather were better today. You know like and she's like. I wish i could know what everyone is saying. Evan terry shows up and she sticks with the wish. I feel like i don't know if you're suddenly like. Oh we're doing we're doing wishes now like that are actually gonna come through. Can i switch it up. I might add mailed one. She didn't even invest a birthday candle in this wishes. Unlike yeah terry terry's rookie. How it is maybe maybe she has like a quota you know. She's like a cop on a street where people speeds many wishes she can for the month and a little girl whispers interrogation say. Hey listen got this. Take care of caesar. Just let them talk. Let all these things. I always wondered not to get too controversial. I always wondered why cops meet those quotas. It seems impossible for a cop to lose their job under any circumstances so i never understood like we got our parking ticket quotas. And it's like and what's going to happen if you if you write a less ticket one less. I don't understand so listeners. If you know the answer right to elliott kaelin right to me care of police. And i'll be in custody probably because they've caught me when i tried to steal the hair off somebody in their sleep. So lily walks away and then teri immediately accosted by her boss. Who is i. Don't know god. Who is this figure like. The i mean he's like ahead fairy. I guess explains that. Of course the wishy great. He's just he's just an older man wearing regular clothes. It's not even in a costume that he said that the wish was powerful. She's never should granted. He turns her into a toad briefly and then back into a into a human shape. Uh weird but then they don't actually talk about a way forward. I guess we'll get to that later. Lillies walk around with andy. The hedgehog who was talking to her. She's very excited she remarks. I still can't believe you can talk. Which was like that was like two seconds ago to still entire life. I think so Did you mention there's a no talking animals rule. Yes it's like. A code violation quotes very specific. But again it does nothing and then he goes to he goes this other this other magical character and goes i know they want to know if these walls could talk. Please don't make the laws talk. It really freaks people out. They don't want talking walls that can watch them. Do things. don't do it so now we're going to get a little bit of a little bit of conflict because we're introduced to a pair of very terrifying crooks. We have an older. I think italian gentlemen and has sidekick bubba or as it is brand out the movie bouba now. They're your mr roller criminals of opportunity. They are there it necessarily crooks. They're they're they're they're handyman. Yeah they're generalizing opportunity to to steal talking hedgehog for that. They were just posing as gardeners the whole time because they know because everyone in the family knows them already have a very nice ladder. That audrey was so take like she was more like. This is an indication of how boring the movie gets at times that she looked up the price of the ladder. That these handyman have. It's dan talking to four hundred fifty dollar ladder here..

"Contract was like at some point a teen girl has to be totally turned on by me. That's what it felt like because it's never remarked on again it felt like canes. Listen if we're going to have teen girls in this movie. Everyone has identified that. I'm still dill f- soon my contract so we cut to. Oh yeah we're introduced to whiskers hairless cat. That andy describes as bob cat from the old days and that has never might remarked on. Do not like it said in a way where i'm like was he an assassin woods. Go yeah go back to the possibility that this movie takes place in twenty ninety nine. Maybe they're like incident of bio dome old days or like pre climate catastrophe. Bob bob had whiskers before everything went to hell and they got put into this replica. Waste supported by later on when inexplicably becomes extremely foggy at one shot to another her when whiskers is telling his story about his lost. Love later on spoiler we see him sitting on a balcony in a city and it is the only time the existence of urban look patients or anything other than the school and the house is ever hinted at so. Yeah i totally. I think this is a totally valid reading of the movie that there was. He and bob used to live in a city and there was some kind of ecological catastrophe. Now he lives in this in this hologram dome whiskers. Has this whole like flashback. Like he's about like he's going on his fucking shrike pilgrimage. Or something like what. A flashback to see for he keeps on dying getting created into a new hairless cat. Yeah okay so let's see so. The lily is outside. She remarks like a child would that she wishes all the things that she sees could talk. Plants animals etc. Yeah immediately whisked away into a fair universe that looks like it. Looks like like a filter and instagram linked stories filter or a snapchat filter that they if you went to if you went to where shrek lives and you took a picture with an instagram filter. Feel like that's that's kind of animated butterflies around and we're introduced to lily's ferry. Bff play by terror. read is trust. I guess like a hippie like she's she's got some flowers in her hair he's going to san francisco. Yes when she. She explains that she's a rookie. She is there to grant wishes so. Of course lily wishes that all these things could talk. And of course -tary grants that wish..

"I went through them all cold a dad but this one i feel like spoke to us and no doubt if i was right or wrong i had my money on google talking and then auto filled talking feet talking that worth we get it and to me giving you were given a selection of movies to choose from. Why did this speak to other than your deep and professional interest in hedgehog. I mean two reasons first. I thought it would be funny by just came back for another hedgehog episode. That was the overriding one. And so it helped this seventy minutes. But like as soon as i turned it on i was like i made a terrible mistake. I got an email from toil thing like that. You were ten minutes into it and you didn't know if you could make it through or something and say that seventy minutes feels long when you're watching all them to be commercials in my right that's happening. Minute feels like both parts of soda. Burs shane film. Okay well guys. I'm going to be driving this vehicle. Let's see where we're at. So as i mentioned. Watch this shit onto kellyanne delivers again. We got some opening credits with footage of hedgehogs. Yeah as we're talking about the opening credits. I want to mention this written by george p saunders on george george saunders of pastorale and lincoln and the bardo. That's a different. George saunders george saunders actually like four screenplay credits weirdly but most of my about the similarities between george saunders works so i'm going to have to be honest the george saunders could write version of this story where a ferry gives all animals and plants around one house the ability to talk and it would probably tell us something bittersweet about the human condition so after the opening credits with footage of hedgehogs. We get a shot with two. I guess crooks are stealing a hedgehog with narration from the hedgehog in this like how. I bet you're wondering how i got here. That's exactly my And then so. This starts a theme in the movie. Which is the hedgehog introducing things. then saying. We'll talk about that later. How how would you describe the voice of the hedgehog still. I mean i would say fifty percent there it does. The cellphone somewhere need is clearly the director of the movie who also does the other animal voice and he is clearly trying to channel. Lorenzo music as garfield is not quite. It's not coming across. You know there's a there's a little bit of kind of droopy your dopey or quality and then like the cat it's like i'm the cat i mean all i can think about is in that manner. The hands of fate mystery science theater. Where jill's like that was just one. The voice suspect there just one guy just one guy so yeah so we we back up. Andy the hedgehog were informed. His name's andy explains that he got the ability to speak due to a wish that all animals can speak all the time just humans can hear it but he got it because a magic. Wait wait not too not too fast. Let's back up against backup to meet the family. There's a lot of freeze frames for services for forever saragossa manuscript of low-budget talking animal. Family films. the movie just keeps keeps edging you about when you're going to get to the story Yeah it's like the most recent mortal kombat movie so we so we're introduced to the family. We have a little girl named lillie. Who is the caretaker for andy. The hedgehog we have. I think you guys might help me. Tina is her older sister. Who was a cheerleader to lee. Get out of that. "It more later in the show but first let's return to more of this cutting edge as we talk about andy talking hedgehog because dan. What do we do on this. Podcast this podcast where we talk about a bad news who watch a bad movie and talk about them and Boy this is a small timber or small embers Where we watch smaller movies movies. That normally you know we might think. Oh this is like Like beating up a fish in a barrel like just punch harder movie like this. we're punching so far down it's like we're burling fit into the ground to hit a corpse in the face general this general. We'd like to take on something a little larger. But every every year we get a month's dispensation to make fun of something real small and in this case oh boy it's a small moving in production and the small movie in time seventy minutes although when we were why how much. How much did they hours. How much this one costs to make guys. I don't know how much customer i will say that. There's a scene where you can see the address of the house it up hugely large. Yeah if you look it up. Is this house. That did not put up a fake address a- addresses written on the front house. It's not just the street number. It is the street number street name written across the top of the door. I've never seen that before and it belongs to the film. I don't wanna get into showing off but like that makes sense. I mean it's a it's a it's a it's a bigger house the my house but But it is a movie that takes place almost entirely inside and around one house. I mean i. It costs a feel good all depends on how much dean cain charged. You know alleged grit for dean came at five hundred on movie. Yeah this is probably part of terry's community service for something so the the budget for this movie is through the roof and before you say yes. A movie shot mostly in around one house could also be. Who's afraid of virginia woolf for bug but this is not that kind of movie. You know what i'm talking about listeners. Come on so. Dan tell us a little bit about of the talking. Hedgehog you how did this movie. Come to your attention Well you know small timber. I have found that the best thing to do These days now that. "Jamelle Lee thought are with us you guys win the teacher contest for the best deterrents I have seen thank you think black tee shirt white tee shirt ones as beans and rice other one says rice and beans well done you guys touched down I love it or do you guys live and we live in Brandywine Maryland and it's about twenty minutes outside of Washington DC the C. Folke welcome good to have you in here to do a debt free scoring yeah I love that welcome and how much have you paid off two hundred twenty two thousand two hundred twenty two dollars No Way that's a lot how long did this take twenty two oh no all are you making that a cell phone twenty two months and twenty two hours twenty two dangerous oh my gosh and what your household income don't tell ME two hundred twenty two thousand dollars you know currently the household income is that two hundred thousand two hundred okay and what was it what was the range was a low point the high point was two thirty four and we went from two thirty four to a hundred and eighty whoa okay all right and now making two hundred so what kind of that was the two twenty two twenty two we had a rental property medical bill credit cards at vacations rentals vehicles we we had it all paid off everything but your house everything but our home wow did you sell the rental yes we are so different from what that it brings with it a so for one thirty eight okay of the two twenty two at the two twenty good and and the rest of what was the other big ones cars are student loans cars we didn't have student loans and it was out cars and we had bought a brand new home so course with a brand new home we was brand new furniture brand new house federal law yes so did you keep the cars yes we did keep our cars so the rental property in just plowed through the rest of it out through the rest of it and Russia Russian V. licensing yes I love it so I won't be too been married close to fourteen years from this office okay so what happened two years ago that lit the fuse because you guys blew up man and always all hurry please give me the battle white and a I got pregnant and I went in for my twenty two week follow up and they put me on high risk and they indicated that I will have to stay in the hospital until I delivered her and the goal was to get her to twenty eight and so since I was in the hospital they wouldn't allow me to go home to pack or bring anything my husband went to a bookstore and he just so happened to pick up your around the financial piece book so I read it within one or two days and that's what kicked everything off room so your your stuck in bed but you are chomping at the bit now yes for ready to go and so Janelle's like okay I got two problems one is I got her in bed and now she's gone crazy well actually was three problems because it's the third one was being that she was on bed rest I wasn't aware of everything all the bills that we had owned zero hour but that's our attention so well you know future reference or something happens how much will pay the bills with bills do you have a bill do I have a so from that point I wanna look for financial book because she's always reading from Barnes and noble how can I purchased your book and producer aha wow okay so what you guys do just dump everything out on the hospital bed and go through it and figure it out well not at first and when I was in there it was more of Hey we need to do this and he was no no I just need to know what bills to pay so I'll bring the bills whenever they come in the mail but it took awhile it it wasn't always easy I recall having the budget envelopes and I'm in one grocery line with my budget and my lows and he's on another line with his debit card so it it took a little while it was in that instant let's pick up the book and just do it but he of eventually came on board gotcha okay all right but in twenty two months you decide to sell the rental and pay off everything else so Jamelle what made you decide to go all in going from sort of being in well she drug good pitcher for me in terms of stress free household because we like to travel related to things like the same time who is also going at that she painted pictures to where we spend accordingly that will live a better life for more stressful life if we just pay save and pay out of pocket versus putting everything on a credit card so I was a bigger picture for me and now here we are yeah so when you go here was it worth it it was kind of an yeah I love it well done good job very very cool so what do you guys tell now that you're on the other side of this what do you tell people the secret to getting out of debt is I would tell someone especially married couples there's a few have a strong household and one person is strong in one aspect in terms of finances that that person taking the and you follow just get on board and that's with anything well as a strong person in a particular category from the from that person is go all in the overall outcome will will succeed that's logical and who who's the nerd at your house then I'm guessing I know okay you kind of enjoy it I mean that's what it amounts to and and that makes sense well done good job you guys what about you Aletha what do you tell people the KIIS arm I would say is three major things know your why have a vision where you want to go and then start creating goals to get there that's very good very good all all very good ways and reasons to get out of debt that's it so what's your why I'm R. why was we we just wanted to live like nobody else down the road my vision is at the age of fifty I want to retire from that government service and be a third grade math teacher and child and travel in the summertime I love it very good very good and what do you do Jamelle unlawful spent okay very good good okay very cool you guys I'm proud of you who were your biggest cheerleaders we are yes we are each other's biggest cheerleaders we we cheered each other on we actually created a vision wall in our basement because we was in the process of redoing the basement since it was a new home we need to get the basement done but we stopped in the middle of construction and painted the wall like a chalkboard paint we put our vision and everything up there so anytime we went down there and that was our cheerleader that was our visual that we got to keep going a lot of it out of the one in every house I'm I'm I gonna make one tonight that's good I like that well done well done so what was your biggest sacrifice for me I'm the Spender in the family so one my biggest sacrifice was not purchasing quickly they get out planted out save for and also decide whether or not if it's in the office of one of our many determinations in terms of things that weren't necessarily things and he says he always came first uhhuh and once I put in the back you know you don't want I used to do that to come Spender at our house just like you and you know I actually wrote it out one time and I figured out I didn't really have any he keeps almost everything on my list was once and so I was just widening he was convicted me to no end it was unbelievable it out most of us in America really I mean most of us don't have many needs if any at all we we have transportation clothing food shelter I mean we really ever needs covered and and most so and even a better version of any of those things as a warrant you know once you got a car a better cars not a bad thing but it's a one it's not a need you know a man yet we all say I need to and I do it too I still do it I have to fight against it that's why god makes me teaches everyday well done you guys so proud of you got a copy of Chris Hogan's book for you read our other problems said returns right every day millionaires because you're going to be one of very soon that you're right and that way you can travel in the summers out of a perfect I'm loving it well done very good stuff Jermall and Alicia and are you brought hello are your baby with you yes and how old is she he is a fifteen months and twelve months correct it looks weaker all rights very good good stuff all right Jamelle Alicia and little Kennedy two hundred and twenty two thousand dollars paid off in twenty two months until you're debt free scream three two one we.

his column and his email newsletter as a grounding for understanding the president resident that too as a grounding for understanding the present we'll talk with him now about two of those recent pieces and get his take as well on the democratic primary candidates coming soon to Jamelle state of Virginia he lives in Charlottesville there's a new Monmouth poll out today the chill Sanders Biden and Bloomberg basically in a three way tie for first there spoiler alert to mail has a new column today called the trump in liberalism of Michael Bloomberg Jamelle thanks for the time today we always appreciate when you come on thank you for having me you wrote earlier this month about trump's new additions to the travel ban really an immigration ban particularly including Nigeria you take us back to some earlier immigration history and that column and also in the very first one you wrote for the times last year the today resonates what what you call a decade worth of nativist hysteria that began in the nineteen teens can you remind us of the roots and manifestations of that sure so in the nineteen hundred eighteen nineties nineteen hundreds there was a big wave of immigration to the United States mass immigration and it came predominantly from southern Europe and Eastern Europe and at the time many Americans many white Americans of say English and German stock regarded those Americans are those immigrants it's not really being white the same way they were now it's important not to overstate that they were seen obviously is European obviously as of a piece with them but not really fully able to assimilate into American society and Italians in particular were seen as having a form of religion as belonging or having allegiance to dangerous ideology is like anarchism and so and and and Italian are there there are basically bombings by Italian anarchist me eighteen nineties nineteen hundreds is it is all this fear and fear mongering about immigration and it breaches it's kind of peak in the nineteen teens and leads to a series of immigration laws there's one in nineteen twenty one the quota act which establishes set quarters for every country and in nineteen twenty four there's the Johnson reed act which is in some ways and updating of expansion of the court to act we're in the quarters are tightened there are links to be eighteen ninety census which is before the big wave of immigration into our country is our insurance from any given country will depend on the number of people living in my country from that country in eighteen ninety so just for number sake if they're only a thousand Italian Americans were Italian immigrants in the country in eighteen ninety Dan Johnson read several only five percent of that number can actually be commensurate country after this bill is passed and that was a a way to explicitly reduce the number of immigrants from these countries as well as from Asia is specifically China and Japan and from African nations but not all right not only the colonial subjects British from south British Africans British people from our English people from India that could just in time for them it was very clearly an attempt to encourage the immigration of of our European seen as amenable to American culture and discourage the immigration of everyone else this almost this forty year cycle where there was forty S. years of mass immigration through Ellis Island then the native this backlash that you've been describing culminating in the Johnson read Immigration Act of nineteen twenty four which locked it down for another forty years then it opened up again in the Immigration Act of nineteen sixty five there and forty years later let's say by the time we get to two thousand five or so and they're trying to pass comprehensive immigration reform nativist back less prevented that all the way through trump and if that cycle is something that really does represent and Evan flow what do you think it's us out of this it's difficult to say right what got us out of the the past cycle of nativist backlash was a long period of assimilation first of all that many of those are eastern European and southern European immigrants especially after the second World War it became fairly integrated into American society by the sixties and seventies there are more or less just to white Americans you happen to have you know non Anglo sounding last names and that helped lower the lower should have the fury and the fear of immigration there was also the Cold War and the Cold War plays a big part in out many of that you couldn't be called social justice games of the twentieth century the simple fact that the United States had a major political and ideological competitor one which at least nominally was committed to some kind of racial equality which which openly attacked and talk to the United States for racism at home which supported anti colonial movements across the world that fact really did spur of the United States to frankly get its act together and so it's it's the top the competition with the Soviet Union which in part makes a federal issue a federal officials more willing to support the civil rights movement in the United States it's that competition which is on Lyndon Johnson's mine in part when he does signed in nineteen sixty five immigration bill which really liberalize is immigration United States we don't have that kind of great power competition I have super power competition there's no similar ideological rival to make season the same way I so I'm not sure if there will be an external pressure pushing American officials away from the division what if there is a major difference it's that the nativism of the early twentieth century did have a considerable amount of popular support modern day nativism does as well but it also has an equally large if not larger opposition I'm there are low there are a large number of Americans many many of the white Americans who do have a real commitment to something like a racially equal society and have rejected the anti immigrant rhetoric and policy of the present administration and so that that is eighty new developments in American history and in fact if you broaden this to just think about you know racial egalitarian isn't writ large the constituency for it is probably larger now than it's ever been in that could end up being the thing that moves us away from this present worth noting I think as we look back on that nativism on the rise of a hundred years ago is that that was also a time when the resurgent clan was on the rise in the south like I think the Charlottesville Robert E. Lee statue that was so controversial recently stems from that era not from right after the civil war correct me if I'm wrong you make this column this connection to the clan on the rise in your column last January what do you think ties them together I think what ties them together is the nature of the second Klan scholars of American my terms of movements and claim a particular role will divide the clan's history at this point two three periods there's the first clan which emerges after the civil war during reconstruction which is more or less I just kind of just a terrorist group terrorizes blacks kills blacks and their white allies kind of you can almost think of it as the paramilitary arm of the X. inveterate still vying for political power that clan doesn't disappear but goes into sharp decline once the federal government all right works to suppress it in eighteen seventeen eighteen seventy one and doesn't reemerge earthy clan doesn't reemerge until the nineteen teens early nineteen twenties and this is what historians call the second Klan missing clan is actually pretty different it is a fraternal organization it doesn't take its iconography from the original claim as much as it does from the popular it was a popularization of that clan in the movie birth of a nation by D. W. Griffith were in that film that clan is sort of the heroes of the story but the ones saving the south from reconstruction all right and the the second Klan although organized around the symbols or can be interpreted symbols of that post civil war south is much more constituents broader in its concerns it's not just about anti black racism not even primarily but AT black racism but about stopping immigration about protecting traditional gender roles about all right maintaining sort of the higher are the hierarchy of race and religion with the white Anglo Saxon Christians at the top and truth doing this not as a vigilante group but as a broad based mass movement has millions of members is heavily concentrated in the Midwest not necessarily the south and has a big influence on the native as politicians of the day who see in the clan kind of popular support for their positions of the connection I make in my column and and the connection I think listeners should make is even the social base of that second clan which is middle class which is a small property owning these are rich people but they are poor either and that is anxious about its status in channels that anxiety into a politics of exclusion and hatred such troubling the really interesting connections to mobile we my guess New York times columnist as we talk about some of his history pieces you wrote last month about the first book you read this year the counter revolution of seventeen seventy six slave resistance and the origins of the United States of America by Gerald Horne historian at the university of Houston and it places the American revolution in the context of the geopolitics of African slavery not just the desire of the white colonists to not be dominated by England was the revolution scene in the colonies as helping to protect the institution of slavery one thing accord does in the book that's really useful and it's useful just for anyone thinking about the revolution the colonies is that it's important to not treat the Connie as as a single model left right and so for calling this in the south I'm from Maryland and Virginia down to Georgia the revolution the part of part of why the patriots were able to build popular support for the revolution in the south was because of this very real fear of the British not just freeing insulate people put arming them in there already been precedent for this in the preceding decades permit which according speaks about many of the many south Carolinians for example worth it descendants or themselves transplants from Barbados at the time a British colony kind of a hub of British slavery in the Caribbean and even the recurring wars armor betas between the British between and free free blacks between indigenous groups the British in listed black flat black soldiers and obviously there are black armed blacks fighting against the British and so there's this experience of blacks in arms Africans in arms which terrified wipers contest in the south instead that fear spurred on again by the colonial governor of Virginia or done more basically announcing any freedom for any slaves as far for the British against the patriots did spur southern colonist Ted join the patriot because in the north and in the mid Atlantic it was a little different slavery was existed there wasn't as deeply tied to the economic system although Boston and Providence Rhode Island were major slave trading ports but up there all right Riteish control over commerce over at the ability of merchants to sell their wares two other powers in the.

"Daily Tolbert the twenty twenty nine five other kids. Everybody thank you so much shooting and thank you coming out Democratic presidential debate and and literally moments ago and we are coming to you. Live people coming to you live. That's right. We're live. You don't believe me. Check your watch eleven o'clock. You see told you now. We'll get to what happened in the debate in just a second but first it's important to know what the stakes were coming in because you see unlike previous debates. We're all you needed to make good on stage. Which is a permission slip from your mom this one. This one had a higher threshold for entry. So only the top ten candidates made the cut eleven if you include Marianne Williamson debating from the dimension of the mind so it meant for the First Time Biden Haydn Warren and burning all on the same stage yeah so this was a major milestone in the primary campaign which is why proper debate preparation was more important than ever this morning. The candidates are getting into debate mode in some unusual ways. Beto rourke jamming on drums Andrew Yang shooting hoops beat Buddha judging amy clove chart sharing the same flight Buddha judge tweeting very funny united. I mean it was bound to happen. There's so many candidates flying to so many places it was going to happen. You know what I feel bad for. Anyone who happens assisted next to a presidential candidate on flights. Can you imagine what it'd be like just like so let me tell you about my twelve point plan and how we're GONNA get this country bags like. Can I sit next to the crying baby. Please ways the only candidate would want. Some of my flight is Bernie Sanders. Yeah because you know he'd start some shit. He'd be like Oh come. The one percent of the plane has ninety percent the legroom. Let's go to first class killed up but the candidates aren't the only ones preparing for tonight's debates. ABC ABC News also took some extra measures to make sure things went smoothly. ABC News hired these local actors so producers could plan lighting and blocking techniques. We've got Senator Bernie Sanders. Senator Elizabeth Warren former representative Beto rourke played what how lazy the cost for this thing. I'm sorry none of those people look like the candidates they're standing in for the Bernie. Guy Has a mustache right. The guy has a full beard and the woman playing Elizabeth Warren isn't even native American. I don't even know what that was about. I will give him some credit though only on stage for a few minutes and yet they're all still polling better than bill de Blasio so congratulations. Now one of the more interesting aspects of the democratic debates has been unlikely pundits who has emerged online so as per our debate night tradition. Let's check in on the most recent political musings from a rental James Simpson twirl yours truly I kurt all of you to try to find some way to watch these debates because we gotta know who these people are and really what they're talking about. when it's over do I'm not listen to these pundits and these allege experts. Tell you who won the debate. You had the vote. You're the expert mark. I'm just saying take care. You shouldn't listen to the experts. You know those people who will tell you that blood splatter can't be in in two places and someone did the crime just missing to yourselves come. I'm not surprised. OJ's telling people not to listen to the witnesses look at him. He's like come on guys like the we did it with me. No scientists no forensic experts also also. I do like OJ making videos. I just want to let you guys know that he's on twitter making these videos because then I know where he is all the time I look in the background like all right palm trees. We still safe. We're still say liberty ways he so with ten. Democrats lined up and ready on the stage it was time to begin the third Democratic presidential debates and while most of the candidates use their opening statements pitch their version of America Comma Harris decided to fast forward straight to her debate with trump. I have a few words for Donald Trump who we all know I was watching so president. Trump you spent the last two and a half years full-time trying to sow hate and division among us as and and that is why we've got nothing done and now president trump you can go back to watching Fox News. Oh Oh come coming with the fire here the crowd you're happy they were you know trump is pissed off wherever he is right now right yeah. He's probably shouting at the TV jokes on you. I got picture picturing picture super furious. He's like you know what actually you're fired again. Omarosa I'm with you so oh come and harass her opening remarks to go directly Donald Trump but Andrea Andrea went with a different approach. He just went with cold hard cash. It is time to trust ourselves more than our politicians. That's why I'm willing to do something unprecedented tonight. My campaign will now give a freedom dividend of one thousand dollars a month for an entire year to.
