So joe berry's certainly has a lot more talent to work with plus matlin floor hired for what one reason because he worked with the brand staley which is the vic fangio defense. But i'll tell you what it didn't look a whole lot different from the dom capers three four and then the mike patton three four after that and to me. That's you know the the question mark again was joel berry going to be any better than joe berry was in previous places and isn't going to be any better than capers pet more and at this point again one game. Not only the jugs machine but in catching tennis balls one handed. And if you see this if you see his touchdown in this game he's closely covered in the left corner of the end zone and the steelers need this play. They need this score to make their offense. And at that moment instead of just sort of giving up on the ball you could see that deontay johnson extended both arms and somehow some way came up with the ball and dragged one foot to make sure that he stayed in bounds to me. It was one of the great plays of week one of this season and it was made by guy who spent all of last year in the doghouse because of all his drops going a little more macro on that win. Peter and i. I know i spent a lot of time around college football. I don't wanna make to collegiate. But that was a meaningful type of win for the steelers. Not just getting off to one star but many people the big bad steelers picking pittsburgh to finish bottom half of the afc north. You go to the team. I know these are grownups. These are professionals who are paid to win every sunday. But i have to think that they walk back into that facility this week with a different kind of feel different kinds of confidence then a lot of the other teams who are also wanna know agree totally and and it was really an interesting week for the afc north bengals with unlikely win over the vikings. And you know it really stuck out to me is look. Cleveland is a very good team. Cleveland is a top ten team in the nfl right now. But in the last twelve minutes of their game against the kansas city chiefs they went from maybe not controlling the game total but but being in the lead and having a good chance to win and then two plays happen. "One. My name is Zach shambler. I will be right back. Oh, right we are back hope we're doing very, very well. Let's now jump into the second game of watch this weekend. It was a phenomenal game. The chiefs just beat the browns 33 to 29. And it was a great game. The crowd in Kansas City was phenomenal. I didn't realize how much I missed having really passionate fund excited live crowds in the NFL. It was like a sea of red chanting, oh. Dude, I love that. Even through the TV, it's just so cool to hear and I really, really miss that side of the NFL. Now, I want to start today by giving credit to Kansas City's quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He was put in a tough spot yesterday. Basically, they had three rookie offensive linemen starting. They had center creed Humphrey, right guard, Trey Smith, and then right tackle Lucas niang was actually drafted last year in 2020. But he opted out. So the result was that Kansas City had three starting offensive linemen who had never played a down in the NFL before. And they were playing against the Cleveland Browns. The browns have a really, really good defensive line. Two former number one overall picks to deviant Clowney, and then the headline guy, miles Garrett who's a fantastic defensive end. And they got pressure on Patrick Mahomes early and often. They was running around for his life. Now the key was, they could not bring him down. And I can not understate the impact of having Patrick Mahomes as your quarterback. He's the best quarterback in the NFL, buy a mile. His ability to extend plays and survive with a bad offensive line is just ridiculous to me. I think I often don't give enough credit actually. And he makes throws that other guys wouldn't even attempt. I mean, again, predictions for Kansas City. I talked about how I'm concerned about their offensive line..

"The ones that you don't make. Yesterday we saw a calculated and patient Jameis Winston. I really believe that working with head coach Sean Payton in New Orleans is making him a better quarterback. And I'd love to see that mandate, potential here in New Orleans is unbelievable. What he can do? I mean, Jameis adds an element to this football team, and this offense, the Drew Brees just couldn't do last year. James had a he launched a depot 55 yards to the under Harris for a long touch, and I'm like , hey, I don't think I saw Drew Brees here that one time last year. James throwing 5 touchdowns is even crazier when you realize this fact. Most of the receivers that he was throwing to against Green Bay were undrafted. Only one receiver on the saints active roster against Green Bay was drafted. By the way, it's kind of weird. It was time Montgomery. He got drafted by the Green Bay Packers. He only got one pass for 5 yards. Every other guy was brought in as an undrafted free agent. The point is that Jameis Winston did that and 5 touchdown passes against the packers won their division went to the NFC title game last year. James had 5 touches on passes with basically undrafted receivers and didn't even have his best guy. Right now, Michael Thomas are best receiver is out with injury. He's coming back at some point. I feel really good and really excited by Jameis Winston. So another thing that's impressive about the saints season openers when you realize that the city was just decimated by hurricane Irma. The team currently is operating out of Dallas, they're living in hotel rooms, their families are out of school and they all got moved. That's another big story here is overcoming adversity. kind of reminds me a bit of when the saints were kind of trying to recover in the city of New Orleans is trying to recover from Hurricane Katrina. "Now that didn't matter to their quarterback Russell wasn't Russell Wilson said, I got to make this work. I got to figure it out. I want to win. And my point is, Russell Wilson beat a better football team. The Indianapolis Colts. And Patrick Mahomes beat a really good loaded Cleveland Browns team with a struggling offensive line a really good defensive line he was playing against. These are two Hall of Fame quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson. And if you want to win with those guys, all you got to do is get your team good enough, make it close, and then they will do the work from there. They will elevate your football team and you will win. And then I encourage you, go look at the scores from week one of the NFL season. It's unbelievable. There's an outlier, the falcons game. I think Matt Ryan's a great quarterback. I haven't watched the game yet Jalen hurts. I heard played really, really well. Is Jalen hurts a better quarterback than Matt? I don't know the answer to it. It's possible. And I think the Broncos, giants gamete, teddy Bridgewater is better than Daniel Jones, but that's another one that's called same with Sam darnold and Zach Wilson. But if you look across the board at the NFL, the better quarterback won this week and every single game. It's unbelievable. You're like, wow, wow. If you said, hey, which team has a better quarterback? That team won. Every single time this week in the NFL. And so I think sometimes I overcomplicated. I go deep in the weeds, but this guy and that guy, it's like, wow. Is the quarterback good enough to elevate his team? Sometimes that's the question you have to ask and that's the only question you have to ask. And I would ask yourself if you're a football fan and you have a favorite team. Then ask yourself, can my teams quarterback elevate my team? Because I watch Joe burrow just elevate the Cincinnati Bengals, they beat Minnesota in overtime. Russell Wilson did it Patrick Mahomes did it. Tyler Murray had 5 touchdowns against Tennessee. When is Daniel Jones ever thrown for four and ran for one and dominated another football team? I've never seen that from Daniel Jones, and I'm still waiting. And that's why Aaron Rodgers has been.

New Orleans Saints to Use Interim Facility for First Month of Season
"The new orleans saints have picked their starting quarterback jameis winston. Jeff duncan covering the team new orleans times. Picayune sports columnist. There's so many moving parts here other trying to make roster cuts today get players out of there and they got families members all in the hotel move hotel so it's a it's a crazy situation very unprecedent.

"That's bold. you also got a lot of backlash for your colts pick. But i didn't see anything wrong with your colts back. Neither gary nor i objected to people actually pick because it was to lower too high too low and also the mechanism by which we got there. Which so let's let kind of let everybody in a little bit on the secret sauce. Here i picked this thing by putting down tally. So i had each team on a piece of paper. And then it w and l. And i went through the schedule and i tallied all the things because i didn't wanna look at the record until afterwards and it didn't want it to influence anything but then i got it done wrote. Everything turned it in editor. Mitch says change of plans. We need every single game game by gain and so then you have to go back a second time and and try to remember which wins and losses and then basically we had race the whole thing and then go back and do it from the beginning and so. I don't know if i realized that the colts were going to lose those first. Five games I don't know if i had them down. But that's just kinda of how. I made the ten and seven work eventually like sometimes we had to fit stuff together because the afc records were already printed in the magazine. And so you know. Have to kind of like Wiggle them in a little bit. And but i still believe that like that first. Five games They're brutal Can pull it up right here but like yes so with or without carson wentz you have the seahawks the rams at the titans at the dolphins at the ravens. That's a tough. I five games. You know and it's a good team but You know. I think that there's an argument to be made that they could lose all those games. Yeah i mean i look. I think they're like eleven at six i. I didn't get worked up over a ten and seven prediction for colts though with the carson wentz question mark young so i i thought it was good. I thought you were going to object to forty niners jenny so i i did I i prepared for that On the on the last one. I just think i think we're going to get a tray lance package that we haven't seen it's going to be hard to defend and i think it's going to be second half of the year really fun. That'd be my That's my estimation and one more quick story speaking of the forty niners. So ray ratto is a writer based in the bay area has a radio show They had me on last night to talk about my four hours prediction. And he said Why do you do this. But it in a way that like i think got to the heart of it. Which is the this is a stupid thing to do. And i said well you know you try to do this. And then he said Have you ever done this successfully. Because i'm trying to figure out like who are you and why you doing and so it really put me into my place made me feel pretty good in general about everything and You know but we'll see we got three teams dead on last year. Another four teams within one game of the record. And then i think another couple within two so i feel pretty good about it. He needs to get more acquainted with the per. Agnostic kantor o. "Is it by singing. I need to also correct myself a few minutes ago. I was like it can often be connor me against gary but really. I you know they're so here's it's interesting like there is such an element of fear in not picking the bills to win the afc east. That like i was like not bullied. But like you know you know bothered throughout the season by this. And so i was just like you know what here. Here's the thing. But i. I have the new england patriots at eleven and six as sort of a way at like. It's sort of hidden cry for help like i. I really believe in new. But i'm scared of these people over. What a statement though to say that you felt compelled are scared not to pick the bills. When the afc fcat's that is quite a statement in connor would not have been said since the late nineties mid nineties when early nineties. I'm really dates here early. Nineties correct me all right. I spent some time doing some various You know market Radio interviews when this thing came out. Because everyone's like oh you're wrong. "You can manage that you hope that maybe with the full off-season traditional training camp Maybe some that got coach out of them. But we hear all the stuff about like. Oh this you know quarterback academy and and he's come along so well and and then he goes out there and it's one throw but it's the same mistake we saw just a thousand times in tampa. Yeah and i think the vision of the field coaches often say is one of the hardest things to fix or at least. It's the thing that drives coaches to the breaking point with a quarterback. You often hear what their vision is terrible. We can't fix it like it's over like whenever a team gets to a breaking point with a quarterback and decided to go in another direction that is often a factor and certainly you know it was a factor in tampo now. Of course they moved onto. Tom brady so you could say that. Didn't work out. what they've stayed with. James i don't know but i think if they did stay with jameson hadn't gotten brady. I think they would have the same reservations of like but we can't fix this thing. That is essential to your job. So i don't know maybe it's fixed. Maybe it's not but there seems to be a disproportionate amount of optimism and new orleans. I don't know. I was watching the game with my mom and she goes. But didn't this guy already happened and i guess bomb. He said exactly a very long chance longer than most people every chance. I wasn't good. I will say that if we all harken back to our division preview from a couple of weeks ago someone is feeling very good about his. Ian book x factor. Mentions there in book got a little. Bit of pop. On tv sean. Payton may be stacking him up as his hidden sort of tom brady for when this inevitably explodes but yeah i mean to journeys point. You can't complete an extremely important function of the job. Like seeing people in front of the people that you're supposed to be throwing two or anticipating that you you can't be a quarterback and you know this is coming from somebody who is a terrible grammarian still manages to collect a paycheck as a writer as our editor. Mitch knows but You know i'm an outlier. And i don't think that jameson necessarily in that same boat there. Yeah i think. There's a know i i've seen the argument like well. Look at ryan. Tannehill his turnaround in tennessee. I think the titans offense is much different than what tannehill was asked to do in miami and not to mention just super quarterback friendly and not that sean payton offenses not quarterback friendly but it just. It doesn't address the issue that jameis winston has had and again. Maybe maybe it. Maybe this is it. Maybe having this off season is what will ultimately make it work and we will see jameis winston who has plenty of physical tools to work with ear. End up working out here but I i don't know and again we're not prote- som and i'm not going to Jump on on this this. I don't know fascinating. Take that's been thrown around that. Some is is somehow the equivalent lamar jackson. But you can argue. You could build a poor. Man's lamar jackson type offense around tease him hill. He's he's a different kind of reiner. "Hill pod necessarily corrupt But it it. It felt very cold to me the entire situation. Shocking with sean payton involved. But just watching the whole thing. Unfold on monday night and listening to louis riddick. Brian greasy talk about it and they were basically inferring that throughout the week during the production meetings. Tatum hill was increasingly frustrated. Seem to have Acknowledged the fact that he was falling behind in this job. And sean payton kept telling the broadcast crew and tastes hill. That like you're just too valuable just the way you are and you know that kept being the sign is like i can't sacrifice you as a quarterback because i need you all these other places and so they just kept repeating it and repeating that to the point where i was like. What are we doing here. Then what's the. What was the point of all this. Was this ever a competition did he. You know and was james just so bad that they had to keep saying it was a competition until there was one day when sean payton could like slam the table mic okay. Now it's over. He acted like a quarterback finally. Well that's the thing. There's definitely a practicality to saying okay. Well we can use taste him on this other role whereas jameis winston if he's number two quarterback he's just you know he's going to be on the sideline the entire game so there's that but just looking at it again purely from what these guys have put on film in you know. We saw james for years in tampa he had very limited number of snap said he took last year but I've written about this play. I will probably write about it again. Before the season starts he played that one half against the forty niners at home when drew brees originally got hurt. And he was protecting a two touchdown lead and he threw the most jamesy dangerous mistake throw and bounced off jimi wards chest basically but the issue with james and. We heard all this stuff about like. Oh you know. He had the lisa surgery now so now he has now he has. I don't know x ray vision. Something like that. To whatever that was being termed as he doesn't have to squint anymore like george costanza spotting the spotting the the squirrels and seinfeld but yet he just makes these mistakes that are i don't know i don't know how you can justify him. It's it's not it's not misreads. it's not trap coverages. That are fooling him. He is just simply like not seeing full grown men on the second level of the defense and just putting the ball endanger again and again and again and again. And i'm not quite sure how.

The by berry tiny margin tiny talented. Everybody meets everybody got outstanding coaches. You turn the ball over there to fail. You get beat okay. I'm surprised that sean payton hasn't embraced the opportunity to turn jameis winston into a mobile quarterback. He has pro bowl abilities roaming. That's why i say. I mean but to make him a perennial right right. Where were you could be a perennial playoff team. He's not gonna be able to put up the listen drew. Brees is just right. You can't you can't compete with that. But is he strong enough mentally to at least step into the void and survive and thrive. I believe especially if sean payton buys completely in. Because i'm not sure there's a better play. Call than sean payton. I'm not sure. There's a better quarterback maker. Then sean payton so. Wouldn't it be a match made in heaven where you have a guy who just needs to get clean up right like if you can just take the garbage out of his system if you can take away all the bad ideas just start to clean those up and cut them in half. Then you've got big talent right right. I'm looking at the numbers. You put up in the years in tampa. And he threw one hundred. Twenty one touchdown passes eight interceptions. We'll let still pretty great. Yeah it's hard to. It's hard to find that it's hard to find that kind of an arm that ability throw that many touchdowns rises so the point is. I'm surprised sean. Just hasn't embraced like. Hey i've got a guy here. I've got a guy who's big talent but you said you open and but was is there. I got a guy nobody else wanted. Because what did i say i jameis. Winston was the number one overall pick. He was looking for fifty two hundred yard so he already got their got cut several times. Everybody said you can't play that position. Yeah i did with it. Yeah okay you can still do some of that with him as you pointed out because james has no cachet right now. James is going to be happy to have the starting. Yeah like he said after the game last night is been so long. Since i started a foot run really. It's that long so he he can't demand or commanding if you bring back in your tastes them hill packages that i couldn't believe drew brees would sit still for. He did yes. "Max your up. I this concern you yes it does. I mean look. I don't like preseason period. I wish they'd get. Because the only thing i care about in preseason his please get hurt on my team right anyway. I want to get him. And so the fact that he's not playing reduces it minimizes injury risk. And if you ask me. Do i want more ready to play or do i want to make sure that leg is healthy because we saw pretty solid mid pack quarterback even behind an awful offense line with no saquon last year. Then he hurt his leg and he was awful. He was terrible right. I'd rather have him healthy. The thing that bothers me. Most though from what. I've seen with the giants so far as i was picking them to win the division. I'm not moving off it yet. But i just assume over time the offensive line will improve has not looked like it. Has you know it was picking who to win the division. What do the giants are the second best team in the division and the second best defensive team and so while. they're not as good offensively as the cowboys. They're much better defensively. Same thing on the other side with washington. But i thought they'd be better off the offensive line. Still doesn't look fixed. it's still like really bad. And that's going to hurt saquon which is going to hurt daniel jones and also makes me think it increases injury risk during the preseason so so where i come out on it is i wish they had fixed the offensive line. I like what i've seen from daniel jones in these joint practices so he doesn't have to go out there and preseason number two. You mentioned the offense alon. So why am i gonna put daniel jones out there with his office alive and i'll say to add to that. There aren't timid. Golladay is not out there. Playing these stars are not. they're playing. The charts is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and then he dealt with a few different injuries so we have seen him be of topnotch quarterback and as far as being placated the situation with the eagles. I would argue that. He doesn't need the tough love now. He needs someone to him back up. I think he's lost. I can't I can't think of Anything worse to happen right now if you're a Patriots fan right now and and all you want is New Hope. Okay. This is a new hope the possibilities are endless blank canvas money draft picks Capital. Theoretically the Patriots could do a lot of different things some of which could be very exciting and interesting and I can't think of one thing that would just throw a wet blanket all over over all over that any more than bringing back Cam Newton. Yeah John, it's it's weird. I I started hearing the chatter on all the Sports Talk radio station a week and I'm like what the hell is going on? Like it's basically like Cam Newton's become it's similar to some of the debates that you hear in politics like where they just like Stoke fear in people to generate interest in their shows and things like that. It's like, ooh now Cam Newton's the boogeyman that like who they might be bringing Cam Newton back just to get people to react like people people need to settle down and this is why you suck. Had to be SJ this why you listen to this podcast because you know things like how last offseason when everybody was going nuts about Saddam was a guy in Cherry stem is going to be this and Jerry system is going to be that and he's going to be the next guy. You know, what did I tell you from January of last year over a year ago. I told you that he was not be the starter that there was going to be some sort of Veteran competition. So, you know, welcome to coming here where you where you get well informed you don't have to worry about the hysteria. You just get straight facts and and what's going on. So here's where we are. We Cam Newton and this is something that I've been talking about since the end of his Patriots season, which is it's always been a possibly that Cam Newton could come back here. It all depends on what happens with the market and who they end up with the quarterback and this and that but for anyone to suggest the Cam Newton month Is going to be re-signed being the definite number one. That's what we want starter here next year. That's not going to happen. It just it just isn't in and here's why. We've also sort of touched on this but just to sort of reinforce the point. I think what happened this past season is the Patriots realized and and look we've talked about it that there wasn't really a plan back to check understood that there weren't enough chairs for the quarterbacks and somebody was going to be left could have been Jameis Winston could have been Cam Newton could have been Andy Dalton could have been anybody. It happened to be Cam Newton and they said they'd make it work. It did not work and what I think John what happened was and actually I know this happened the Patriots realized after the Cam Newton experiment that not every quarterback can work in the system and that's not to say Cam Newton still not capable of playing good football. I think that he is do I think it could be better with a better Supporting Cast absolutely I do and do I think God Part of the problem last year. Yes, but at its basis in this scheme, you need a quarterback who sees the totality of what's going on in the field. You need someone who's going to win before the snap. You need somebody who's going to see something on the defense say that's this is about to be a bad play here. We're checking to this and Cam Newton outside of you know, he might he might have alerted a few plays here and there but not even close to what we've seen in and look I'm not going to compare him to Tom Brady. Nobody's going to be Tom Brady, but The Baseline Jimmy Garoppolo would have been a lot better. Jarrett Stidham probably would have been a lot better in terms of what he could even when Jarrett Stidham got in John. We saw things like Palm Coast him would change things that the line that's the Baseline in this offense. And that's where it starts. The number one tenant in this offense is don't run any bad place when the quarterback is incapable of doing that for whatever reason that's that's strike. Number one strike. Number two is understanding after the snap. What's going to happen? What is the defense going to do? What is that going to mean in in reaction time? Like if I see the if I see the free safety all of a sudden rotate from too deep to single single life safety. I should know like that who's going to be open, but great. Let me ask you real quick. Cuz everything you're saying makes perfect sense, but did you need a year of did the Patriots need a year of Cam Newton to know that he wasn't that guy? Is it did you think he was that guy walking through the door? Is there anybody really smart Personnel people out there who thought? Oh can't might be able to adapt to this Patriots dial offense. It didn't seem sensible fit. Anyway. This is a guy who's always had accuracy problems who who plays a totally different style of ball. I mean, I don't know why you would have brought him in the first place. If your idea was to offer a patriot style offense

Turnovers Doom Saints in 30-20 NFC Divisional Playoffs Loss to Bucs
"Bill. I just want to dive into it here. Because there's a lot to get to after watching the bucks. Beat the saints. Thirty to twenty so new orleans had been in tampa bay twice this season in week. One about four hundred years ago and then again in november. So what was the difference in this game vs those other two. I really simple pablo the saints. Just didn't protect the football. In the two regular season games between these teams the saints won the turnover battle. Both times there are plus three in the week one victory and then one up in the rematch. Tom brady threw five picks across those two games. Only seven in his other fourteen games. That really felt like the saints had his number and they were gonna have to flip that to win in new orleans. Well they flipped. It didn't turn the ball over the saints coughed up. Four times including three interceptions drew brees. The bucks turned the first few takeaways and two touchdowns and use the fourth to wrap up the game and kneel down. It's virtually impossible to win a playoff game. That sort of margin the saints will just sloppy in this game. Mean breeze could have thrown four or five picks. He threw an awful interception under pressure for the first one and on the same page with alvin kamara on a scene route for the second interception. The third bounced off jared cook. Who also fumbled away a completion on a drive where the saints were looking at. Go up to scores. They lost the ball and proceeded to give up seventeen unanswered points to end their season. So clearly the bucks had a formula of sorts for stopping breeze in it seemed like every aspect of this game. But it's not just that they stopped him instead. They made him look straight up terrible really often and i'm wondering how did they do that to that degree. Well i really think that todd bowles bucks defense. Look the tape from last week's game against the bears look how drew brees was playing. Look at how pal those receivers were moving and just didn't think there was anybody in that lineup who could reliably win against man coverage or beat them down field with their speed. This was especially true. After the saints lost deonte harris who had two long punt returns early in this game to a neck injury the saints did get a long touchdown but it was not with brees on the field. It was the lone snap for one jameis winston who came in and use the same trick. Play the bears ran against them last week. For a long touchdown coming across his sanders they handed to them. Refers goes to jameson mega man. Wide open trade smith at the twenty five fifteen ten five and a touchdown saints and jameis winston. What a touchdown pass against his former overall when breeze on the field it was pretty clear at the game plan was to dare him and his receivers to try and take shots towards the sidelines and get downfield and the game plan worked the bucks used heavy doses of twists and stunts upfront create pressure and then just smothered breezes receivers. I honestly it really felt the only reason. Sean payton didn't bench breeze for winston on the last drive. The game is because it was probably a last few snaps of drew brees his career.

But you have to do it at your own risk until there's that clear move among the fans to go with James Winston.

"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback situation. Jameis Winston will be reporting this morning. He's done with his suspension. You could imagine he's eager to get back to work. The team is two and one and Ryan Fitzpatrick has more than twelve hundred yards passing with eleven touchdowns versus I think now four total interceptions. So if you're Dirk cutter, what would you do? We certainly know that Fitzpatrick has a passion for football and that fire that intensity that competitive spirit. That's contagious. And the team has responded. The offense has responded. The offense is happy and productive. So now Fitzpatrick goes into a week of uncertainty with Tampa Bay after the loss on Monday.
