We are hopeful that people of the state of California will take that mindset they brought into the last drought. And extend that forward with a 15% voluntary reduction, the governor's office says. If Californians reduce their water usage by 15% that could save enough to supply 1.7 million households for a year. Governor. Newsom is facing a recall election in September and has so far refrained from ordering any mandatory water restrictions. But the state has expanded its drought emergency to 50 counties, only eight mostly in southern California, plus San Francisco are not under a regional drought. State of emergency. Emergency proclamation makes it easier for local and state water agencies to address water supply issues, and it loosens.

Some Capitol Hill Lawmakers Back Amazon Workers' Attempt To Unionize
"Nearly six thousand amazon employees who work at a warehouse in bessemer alabama are voting by mail on whether to unionize. If they do this will be the first union amazon facility in this country. Here's jennifer bates. Who works there. I keep butterflies and butterflies. Normally come to calm me but hey this is my stomach faithful. It seems like it's getting bigger and bigger full of butterflies. Because there's no break in. Think i don't know how kogo nerve wracking. The election ends later. This month and i should mention. That amazon is a financial supporter of npr. But we cover them like any other company. Some lawmakers support the union. Including senator marco marco rubio or republican and of course president biden also michigan congressman andy levin earlier this month. He and a group of democrats traveled to bessemer. Good morning congressman. Good morning noel. How are you good thanks. What did amazon employees. They're tell you about why they want to unionize. Well you know a union election so often are about basic dignity and that was really true here. I was shocked to learn what it's really like in there They work in a facility. That's like fourteen football fields and it can take ten minutes to walk to a break room. They've to half hour breaks in a ten hour shift so they might get effectively ten hours to eat lunch be by the time they walk there and back lot of them. Don't feel like they can go to the bathroom. Except on their break. And they're watched and quantified every second they're monitored visually a listening geo positioning and every second they're not on task is measured and if they have a certain number of minutes off task in a week they could be fired sometimes might not even be a person involved it was really kind of dehumanizing to me. Here's the argument. That amazon makes amazon. Says look our employees. Earn fifteen dollars an hour which is a good wage in a place like bessemer alabama. Some of them have health benefits. 401k's essentially they have got the benefits that a union would get them. They don't need a union. What do you make of that argument. I'd like to tell that argument to any national football league player and the actor and a movie any presenter on major television or radio networks all of whom have a union every single one. The idea that unions are only for people who are the most poorly paid. It's ridiculous the one person who is unionized. That every airline is the pilot so this argument is ridiculous. These workers deserve a seat at the table to discuss a safe workplace. During a pandemic they deserve a seat at the table to have a workplace. That's human and a real person can go to and great make fifteen dollars. An hour amazon should pay them a lot more the owner of the company. The main owner had his wealth increase. Seventy eight billion dollars during a pandemic and they're about pay jeff bezos in their bag bragging about paying people fifteen dollars an hour there. What's wrong with workers having their own organization just that they can have input in their in in their work lives. And that's all these people are seeking is a seat at the table during this trip to alabama that you went on your colleague congressman jamaal. Bowman said this doesn't stop with amazon. He mentioned lift. Uber tesla and walmart as well. What is the ultimate goal here. The goal is for workers to be able to form a union and bargain collectively. If they darn well please. Noel were down to six percent of private sector workers in this country needing union. We're gonna pass the proactive in the congress and the president is going help. Jamaal Bowman defeats incumbent Eliot Engel in New York primary
"Defeated 16 term House incumbent Elliott Angle in New York's Democratic primary. Danny Lewis of member station WNYC reports. Eliot Engel has represented parts of the Bronx and Westchester County since 1989 and chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee. But after a hotly contested primary, former middle school principal Jamal Bowman has come out on top. This contest laid bare the ideological split that divides the Democratic Party angle was backed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as well as the Congressional Black Caucus. "Biggest upset of the primary season. So far, Jamal Bowman has unseated New York's long serving Democratic congressmen. Elliott angle. Bowman is a former school principal from the Bronx, and the race was widely seen as a contest between the parties Progressive Wing and the Democratic Old Guard the continuation of the dynamics in two years ago in New York. So you ran on a progressive platform in one of the bluest district in the country, New York 16th. But now, you know, I want to look ahead with you. Assuming you do end up in Congress, which is what most people are assuming, Let's just talk about how you intend to work with the rest of the Democratic caucus in the House. I want to start with the fact that you ran on Medicare for all. But the presumptive Democratic nominee for President Joe Biden, opposes Medicare for all. So how do you expect Democrats to resolve this issue on health care? A lot of conversation. Ah, lot of dialogue, Lather debate lot of listening a lot of learning on a lot of bridging the gap. I mean, the bottom line is the majority of the American people support Universal health care, a single payer system and Medicare for all, they supported that prior to the culvert pandemic, and now that we are living with in the midst of that pandemic. People supported and higher numbers. But here's the challenge. I mean, more generally. Obviously, this is a general election year. What do you say to the argument that pushing liberal policies during a presidential election year progressive policies? Could alienate voters in swing states and swing district. I don't think they will again when the majority of the American people are surveyed and pulled on this issue, the majority of the people support This particular issue, But beyond Medicare, for all, I mean, how do you make ideas like the green New deal or de funding the police popular in moderate district's? We're living in a different country at this moment, then we were even six or eight months ago. We have over 40 million people out of work as a result of the pandemic, So we need a federal jobs guarantee under the umbrella of a green new deal. We have kids who are losing quality education town because of the pandemic. So we need to fully fund our public schools called it disproportionately impacts. Those were upper respiratory illness as it relates to environmental injustice, So we need to deal with the environmental emergency. All of the things that we've kept swept under the rug for decades are now coming to light. As a longtime educator. What do you think? Is the single most important thing lawmakers Khun do to make life better for black Children? We need to start with a process of truth and reconciliation and really reckoning with our history of racial injustice and the legacy of slavery and how it continues to persist in all of our communities, and as we craft policy and worked together, we have to also look at the implementation of that policy, not from the perspective of a Scarcity, mindset or a zero sum game. This is about collaboration, cooperation and working together the build the country that works for everyone, But can you be specific? Can you talk about one specific policy idea that you would like to push? To get passed through Congress that could actually get past. By a Republican led Senate If the Senate does not flip in 2020 We need to give people back to work first and foremost, when we talk about full over 40 million people who have lost their jobs, their happening in Republican states and districts as well. We need to finally deal with economic inequality in our country. You need to make sure the wealthy pay their fair share and large corporations pay federal taxes so that we can invest in the people of our country. Get people back to work. A lot of comparisons have been drawn between you and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, also a progressive Democrat. What have you learned watching her navigate her first term in office. Is there anything you intend to do differently? Well, I've learned that it's okay to be myself. You know, Congresswoman Ocasio Cortez eyes a tremendous leader. She's brilliant. She's fearless, going against a system of white male supremacy, a cz. She's broken a glass ceiling in that system and created species. For new conversations that center, the working class and those who are most vulnerable. So I've I've learned it's okay to be myself and speak truth to power on the issues that matter, most to the people who have been mostly forgotten.
