No. 3 Kansas tops Texas Tech to clinch Big 12 title share

"Kansas freshman Grady dick sealed the win on a pair of free throws with three seconds left in the game. Texas tech trailed by 9 at halftime and stayed close in the second half, but the red raiders were never able to grab a second half lead. Jalen Wilson led KU and scoring with 21 points. To be the champion and to finish on top like that, it means a lot and shows all the hard work and the grid of this team. So it meant so much to me. "You love pepperdine. Maxwell Lewis. How about TCU? Plus TCU got miles in that back court. Are they like a deep sleeper? I think TCU. I mean, the big 12 in general, if you want to bet on a team to win the title, it's someone in the big 12. Okay. So in my heart of hearts, like I said earlier, Kansas is the team. I can't get them out of my mind. They switch everything. They're so fun. They have this guy KJ Adams, who is, I mean, if I was the warriors, I would say we want KJ Adams to come here. He's a small ball 5. And Brady dick at both of them. Get both of them. Like, get both of them. I mean, Kansas is a fascinating group, and I think if it's not Kansas out of the big 12 Baylor, Baylor is a team that has my full attention, they got chacha back who is one of their best defensive stalwarts and I think they're going to be a really good team. I'm taking them off the hook. Maybe he has like 30, 35 point game. And he's going to say to one. Plus the chiefs just won. I don't know if that ties in at all. And we haven't had a repeat since Florida, you know? And even though this Kansas team, they lost Remy Martin, they lost O chiak bhaji, they lost Christian Brown, you know, they lost David McCormick. They lost a lot of guys on their team. They still have Jalen Wilson, who's one of the best players in the country. And they have two guys that could really get you 30 points when you talk about Grady and you talk about Jalen Wilson. Can I talk to you guys in Iowa at 40 one for the woman's title? Just to ride the king Clark bandwagon. I do feel like they'll have the most bets. Because nobody follows women's basketball, just like, what the machine. Yeah. The one who's on SportsCenter all the time. She is amazing though. She is great. I feel like she's gonna save the WNBA in some ways. She's got a great bravado about her too. Like, you know, she seems as if she wants the spotlight. See when she hit the game winner and she just ran. Yeah, like Jalen suggs. The concourse basically and just was screaming at the fans. "5th rank Kansas came away with an 87 71 win over number 9 Baylor despite trailing by 12 at halftime. Dewan Harris provided all 14 of his points while the jayhawks outscored the bears 55 26 in the second half. I just needed to be aggressive. I knew that and I had the opportunity to get it in driving lanes and my teammates found me too, so all the credit goes to my teammates too. Jalen Wilson led KU with 21 points and 13 rebounds. "The 9th ranked Kansas Jayhawks upset the 5th ranked Texas longhorns 88 to 80. After Texas battled to tie it early in the second half, Kansas fought back to a 13 point lead, padded by freshmen Grady dick, who led the jayhawks with 21 points. It was vital that we came out here with that energy and kept it through the whole game and whether it be through a timeout out of halftime and hats off to them, there are great athletic team. "Watching on YouTube, please smash the like button like your brain and Davies, you have consent. If you haven't yet subscribed to the YouTube channel, knock that out while you're here. It helps us when you do that. So please go ahead and do that for us. Let's get into it. The biggest game on Tuesday night. It was Kansas kids and state inside Allen fieldhouse, game started, and it really wasn't competitive. Final score Kansas 90, Kansas state 78, jayhawks led by as many as 13 points early by 16 points in the second half, Cruz to a 12 point win. As a result, Texas is now sitting alone atop the Vic 12 standings with 9 regular season games remaining longhorns are 7 and two in the lead. Kansas Kansas state Iowa state TCU. Each one game back at 6 and three dead leg. What'd you make? What you saw Tuesday night inside the fog where Kansas took control early and never really relinquished it. It didn't relinquish it, but I thought there was a for Kansas state I actually thought there was a viper pit type of element awaiting and all things considered and I saw what you said on CBS Sports Network during one of the segments on Tuesday night. If your case date, you absolutely take a split. I think what stover mentioned, there hasn't been a season sweep by case state of KU since 92 93. I think he might have said. And so you take the one one split. Unquestionably a 100%. No, it wasn't, I don't want to say it wasn't competitive because it was competitive. It just wasn't close. I actually thought there were a moment in the first half, where Kansas that building on fire, billis said at the top of the podcast, you could barely hear what his play by play partner was saying and they had the cans on, but it was just out loud. They were ready to go at the vlog. As you would expect, wanting revenge after that overtime loss, all of two weeks ago there. So it's a good one for Kansas. It brings more intrigue to the big 12 race overall. I mean, as a result, by the way, palm, Jerry palm swapped the teams on the one line, but there's so much more room to go. So we'll see on that. KJ was a one going into Tuesday, and now K states a two, Kansas because it got the win here. Kansas is now a one in the eyes of palm. Welcome to February, by the way, we are February 1, one month to go until March, but yes, the season, it breezes along with a quickness there. It's the big 12 results overall though, the standings. Right now, as you mentioned, Texas atop 7 and two, and then you've got a four way tie for second place, and then Baylor, which is capable of finishing atop the league, has four losses. We'll get to them in a little bit as well. But that really is GPU. That was my biggest takeaway. From the game itself, dewan Harris played well, which one Harris plays while Kansas almost always wins. And that was a really a really positive development there. Jalen Wilson continues to be an outright stud. And in fact, I had to brief mention of this in my Sunday column from West Lafayette on Edie. I'm just of the belief that Edie has clinched the player of the year. Again, knock on wood barring any kind of injury, which, you know, which I'm not factoring into that, that statement that that assessment there. But in a normal season, if you did not have this 7 four Goliath doing things, we almost never see. Jalen Wilson would have an extremely compelling case for national player of the year. And there are a couple of guys that are giving good chase to ED overall. I would put Wilson really neck and neck with Timmy right now. I'd have trace Jackson Davis in there. And then probably Brandon Miller, I think, although, you know, hakas, sasser, even to Bella said Arizona's playing well. But Wilson is probably the best among them right now, and he was awesome yet again. So if your Kansas, yeah, you had the three game losing streak, but your Kansas. You get back on the study. You get a winner up. You come back three days later. You take care of business against K state before turning around later this weekend and you'll go up and play Iowa state on the road. Not to quibble. I would stop short of saying executives locked up the national player of the year that feels a little bit like, and I agree with you. He's the far and away leader. There's no question about that. But that feels a little like every once in a while in college football season, somebody will be like, man, they've secured the Heisman with three weeks to go. And then, you know, somebody has a ridiculous game on a big stage and it just sort of flips it. So I'm not ruling out that somebody else could win national player of the year. But I see in the YouTube comment, somebody's making the case right now, Jalen Wilson should be the player of the year over Zach giddy, with all due respect, 'cause Jalen Wilson is awesome, has been awesome. That competition in this moment on February 1st is not close. Like if you were doing 60 votes, hundred votes, however many people, you'd wanted to have vote on this thing. Decade should be number one on every ballot. He should be a unanimous national player of the year right now. He's a statistical monster on what has been the best team in college basketball. Back to Kansas. It's wild. This time, literally this time last week. Kansas was on three game losing streak. And people were questioning, like, are they really to repeat his national champion? Were they just playing over their heads the entire time? Fast forward to today, they added a quadrant one win at rup over the weekend, quadrant one win last night. They're now 9 and four in quadrant one, four zero and quadrant two, 13 and four in the first two quadrants, zero losses outside of quadrant one. They've got two more quadrant one wins than anybody else in the country perdue included. That is such a, by the way, that is such a Kansas thing. This has happened multiple times in recent seasons. We look up and they might have the best record in the country or whatever, but you just look up right around this time. And then you check out the quad one wins. And as Kansas is clear, it's the first place. So I'm not surprised by this overall. Bill stuff, we mentioned every year, but it's worth repeating. Because of the function of the big 12 and how good it is, but also his non conference scheduling approach. He is Bill self has always putting his team in a position to have that exact situation.

"9th ranked Kansas lost at number 17 Baylor 75 69. It was the third straight loss for KU, a development noted by jayhawk forward, Jalen Wilson. No one's gonna feel sorry for us, losing. We're in a row. We're Kansas, so that's all they want us to do is lose. So he's got to find a way to bounce back and just come together more. Chianti Johnson got the winning basket with 25 seconds left in the OT. Jalen Wilson got to the line, a great player got to line a lot. "Got to be something close to sharp in every big 12 road game to win. Even if you're good. And that's just, that makes it the most challenging league in the country and I think the best league in the country. Let me keep it in the big 12 here since we're talking this because the second game on Saturday and the triple header was Kansas, Oklahoma state. And KU coincidentally enough, closed out the year with an homage to its biggest win of the year against UNC in the title game, and at home Saturday against the pokes, the jayhawks overcame 15 point halftime deficits to win. So how apropos of Kansas to do that, surprisingly enough, and this is obviously via KU stats and information. Their SID. The 15 point halftime deficit at fog Allen was the largest overcome by Kansas in that building. It matched it. They did it in 2014 against Florida, and they did it back in 95 against the UCLA team that was coming off winning the national championship 7, 8 months before shouts to the great Toby Bailey there. So Kansas obviously hasn't often fall behind by as many as 15 by the break. When it's time for a breather and that joint. But I was a little surprised they had never had a larger comeback from a halftime deficit than what they matched there. We'll get to the penultimate play of the game here in just a second. I will note that dewan Harris is rising on my list of favorite college players to watch because he is a past first past second past third college point guard. I love these kind of players. He had 9 assists only one turnover in this game and it is so clear that Bill self trusts Harris on a level where he has with some of his previous really, really good point cards there. There was no timeout called late. KJ Adams had the heads up give me a bucket with 4.8 seconds to go that wound up being the winning margin there. That came what like 40 seconds after Kevin mcculler hit a corner three mcculler didn't even have that great of a game. He was a loud presence in the final 90 seconds or so, but Jalen Wilson had 20 more and Adams was 6 or 6 on the floor with four rebounds in just 23 minutes. There's just a lot here for Kansas to like, Oklahoma state play. Oklahoma state played better than an average game. Oklahoma state probably played like an a minus level game, but Kansas had a 17 two run in the second half from like the 16 minute mark to about 11 minutes to go. That's when they were able to really push back, make the charge and get the game back to where it was, it was in doubt. And between that, shooting 48% from three, it's best so far this season, those are all factors that led to it, but obviously we're gonna, if you got this ready, go ahead and roll this because the McCullough block on Bryce Thompson right before the game ended was what was controversial. And I think he's got the video. Go ahead, nada. Oh, wow. That was a foul. I've seen it from the back angle. Clearly a foul. Bryce Thompson should have been at the line. That's a tough one.

Because of how much I believe in the combination of Bill self in Grady dick. Plus Jalen Wilson, who is playing like an all American. Obviously, given everything Kansas laws from that championship team, they were going to need Jalen Wilson to be an all American level guy and so far he has been that dewan Harris is taking control of games late and greedy dick looks like one of the best freshman in the country. But the early returns on Tommy Lloyd's second team in Arizona really, really encouraging if you're a wildcat fan. Let's because I know we're up against it here. Go ahead and move to the final four in one where I continued to dominate northlander through two weeks of this season. Actually inaccurate. What are the records for two weeks right now? Y'all are tied at 5 and 5. Okay, so that would not be. But what I'm trying to the point I'm making is that based on my past efforts against you, if you grade me on a scale, I've really been unbelievable so far this season. The point I'm making is that I'm not the only one in charge of the music anymore. Let's go. Here we go. What first game do we have, my friend? And by the way, everyone listening, YouTube, you're the best. And we're trying to get to this as early as possible. "Before. Podcast on a pirate ship, my man. It's basically going to sound like hey, I got a question for you. Okay. Kansas. Yeah, it's going to be the best team in the big 12? Yes. You have them evaluated like that. Kansas is going to come off a national championship and be better rated, wind up as the best team and what could again, maybe. We'll see. Could again be the best league in college basketball. In the top 25 and one right now, no, I don't have Kansas as the best team in the big 12. I actually have Baylor as the best team in the big 12. I've got Baylor at 7th Kansas at 8. So, you know, you can mix those up in whatever order you want. But I technically, I guess going by the top 25 and one, I will have Baylor projected as the big 12 champion. If you want to get more Intel into why Baylor has a good chance of being the best team in the big 12, go back and listen. They've already been a feature team in our summer shoot around series. Over the past four seasons, by the way, Kansas after winning 14 consecutive regular season titles in 2019, did not win the regular season title in the big 12. That was the year that Texas tech in case state wound up having a two way tie. Kansas was the best team and won the regular season 20 20 before that season got canceled 2021. Of course, Baylor and route to a national championship. And then last season, KU and Baylor, they were both 14 and four in league play. They have separated themselves. Kansas has separated itself from the rest of the league for the majority of the past two decades since Bill self got there. Obviously, even before that, we know where Kansas stands. It's been the best team in its conference for decades running and what it's been able to do has been outrageous. But we'll see if this Kansas Baylor, you know, one, two, Ted aet tango will continue this season. I think there's a real chance at it. The roster is going to be intriguing GP. You've got them 8th in the country, but there are a few questions as to what we're going to be looking at. With the roster and who's going to be the guy, right? Because they've got a highly ranked recruiting class, which certainly will should play a factor. Although, as you well know, there have been some standout freshman over the years under self at KU, but it's not like Kansas has cut its teeth and firmed up its reputation on an annual basis going off of the outrageous play of its freshmen. That's not really how this normally goes. And I don't think that's how it will go this season, but two names to know are Grady dick, who looks exactly like you think Grady dick would look like. And then MJ rice, a couple of freshmen, great. It takes a really, really good offensive player. He was rated according to two four 7 sports 20th overall MJ rice and other incoming another wing, a top 30 player, more of a four star, should be standout players, but I still think parish, it's gonna be about Jalen Wilson, dewan Harris, and then, you know, the big 12 is going to have two players that I think will be semi dark horses to be the national the player of the year in the conference that can come by transfer. I think it's far dogs amac, who's at Texas tech, who I think could be an absolute monster if he hits there. I love that transfer situation there. And if not him, you know, maybe it will be Kevin mcculler who comes by way of Texas tech, a senior at 6 6 guy who was an outstanding defender, a season ago, could get even better. He transferred in part because he wants to expand his offensive repertoire and give himself a better shot at being drafted in the NBA eventually. So M color comes in as kind of the third major piece, but when I look at the roster parish, Wilson, Harris, mcculler, rice, you got Zach Clements, Bobby pettiford's back, Grady dick, who is going to be the guy. Well, Kansas need a guy. Well, have a guy that really emerges as a top two three player in the big 12. I'm not convinced that'll happen. Maybe it'll be a bit more by committee. And if that's the case, you know, self is who he is. He's considered the greatest coach in the game right now, by a lot of guys. Will that be enough? We'll have to wait and see. Something else on cell I'll share with you in a second. But when you look at this roster, you said before shortly before we started going here, maybe you actually felt a little bit higher on them than previous once you were actually dug in. What made you what made you think that, what stands out to you here? Well, I don't know that I should have a little bit higher than I have. What I meant by that comment is I had an 8th in the tree and I was like, oh, I don't know if I see that other than Bill self. I just trust Bill self to have a top ten team. But I didn't. I was like, I don't know about the roster. I don't know if that's a ton. And I still don't know if it's a top ten roster, but I can talk myself into the roster. After deep diving on the jayhawks, you know, over the past day or so. They bring back dewan Harrison Jalen well, it sounds too starters. And Kevin mcculler started 20 four games at Texas tech last season. For good team. So they've got basically three starter level experience guys from good big teams.

"Three point shooting team at ranks 61st in the nation making 35.7% of its three point shots. The other good three point shooter is Caleb Daniels, who's a 38% three point shooter. He'll need to play well. And then I kind of want, I think Brandon slater is the guy. If Villanova can win or keep it close, I think that slater is the guy in this game that's most likely to be the guy we're talking about. If nova wins just in terms of doing all of the little things and they will need the other element to keep an eye on this and I'll get the Kansas in just a second for the Villanova side is they will need someone to step up significantly from a statistical standpoint. Will it be Dixon's going against McCormick? He's been a really good player. The Dixie McCormick matchup to me is one of the biggest mysteries in this game overall. But I think it's, I think it's going to be slater. If Villanova can win the game, he's the guy that maybe we look up and it's like, look at him, man. 14, 14, 8 and four or whatever. And he went a long way toward doing it. Now call me a sucker for a storyline, but I'm only on Caleb Daniels just having a heck of a game. You know what? New Orleans native? Yes. And I taught real quick. Yeah. Just 'cause I talk with Kellen Sampson here in New Orleans from Houston associate head coach. He said, he basically said, I'm paraphrasing what's up, and he basically was like, man Caleb Daniels is an absolute dude. He is a dude. We knew like we knew how good he could be, but he was so much more physical and imposed as well on the game than we anticipated. And this is Houston we're talking about here. So to your point, you know, coaches would agree, continue. No, I mean, kill Daniel's gonna be put in starting lineup for the third time all season, most likely, on Saturday night. He's a New Orleans native. Probably gonna be starting in place of Justin Moore. Jay Wright, on Thursday, talked about how crazy it is that Caleb Daniels is even in this position. So he got COVID once. Then he got COVID again. And then he got myocarditis, which is an effect that some people get when they get infected with COVID. Right. Jay Wright said he did not do anything, not even shoot free throws from April through September. April through September and to be where he's at now playing so far as one of the most important players on a final four team. And now he's going to be a starter. He's coming back to his hometown in New Orleans. Where he played just down the road to start his college career. Yeah, again, I'm a sucker for a storyline, but I really feel like he could be in for a big game. Kansas society on this breaking down for us. Well, how should Bill self approach this game? You know, it's my belief that we've got really, really good coaches here, but from a tactical standpoint from an X and O from an in game adjustment, your slobs, your blobs, all the designs. I think Bill self is the best that's who you ask coaches in the industry. You say, listen, it's a blanket, 5 guys against some blanket and other 5 guys you get the four coaches that are here and you get 30 minutes of prep time. Have you taken? I think Bill self narrowly wins that. So with that in mind, expectations on Kansas decide who's going to play well and how do you think the jayhawk should approach this game? Yeah, I'm curious to see what Bill self does with David McCormick. I think that's kind of the unknown in The X Factor in this game. Kansas says played very, very well when they're playing small ball lineups. But. Can you hear that thing right now? You've got to be kidding me. Keep it going, KB. They might not be able to hear it off Mike. I'm just curious if you can hear it. It's not who knows why it's happening. The small ball lineup for Kansas has paid off in a big way for Bill self. Villanova, mostly has to play small ball, right? I mean, their biggest Jermaine Samuels, who's 6 foot 7, has been basically their big man defender. He's been guarding like hunter Dickinson, 7 footer. I'm curious if self is tempted to say, hey, let's see what David McCormick does out there and it doesn't end up working out, but he knows he has the size advantage. And stubbornly keeps playing him because I think Kansas small ball lineup is kind of their death lineup. Like that is really, really good. What Jalen Wilson, Christian Brown, a chai baji. So that to me, I think, is I'm curious to see what Kansas does there and how they allot their minutes and what David McCormick's role will be. I'm pretty confident in thinking that Kansas is going to want to play as fast as possible, knowing that Villanova likes to place slow knowing that Villanova right now is basically entering this game on like a 5 and a half man rotation. Especially with Justin Morgan. I think keeping that in mind, that's most likely how I think Kansas will end up trying to attack this game. Even Jay Wright said on Thursday, Kansas will probably be the fastest. And quickest team, they've played against. And I think Villanova is kind of expecting that they will, they will try to meet on KU's terms. I don't know if it's necessary for Kansas to win. But for one player for me specifically, I almost feel like kind of gotta get a good Jalen Wilson game here. Yeah. He's been really good. I feel like that might, you know, Remy, I think I don't know from his plays, depending on it needs to have a good game you'd have to think. And I think that Kansas going small would not be beneficial to them. And they're going to want to run and I think they'll try, but I think they'll know all the way. Like Mark me down, Mark me down for 65 possessions in this game. I think Villanova slightly wins that battle. But Jalen Wilson coming up big in this spot. He might be, he might be the guy that we're talking about more than any other one. Maybe. I don't know. Maybe not. He can be a little bit like this. A little up and down there. But how about Jay Wright on Thursday comparing Jalen Wilson to Josh Hart? Villanova legend Josh Hart, a bigger Josh Hart. That's a big time comparison. Yeah. And Wilson's been huge. I mean, he's their most important rebounder. At his size, he's a very, that is a skill set that is absolutely paid off for Kansas. Let's pick this game KB. I'm checking right now. I'm checking the CBS sports app, which you should have on your phone and all your devices if you don't already. It's how you rate stories. Watch headquarters. You can't watch the podcast on the app. We got to work on that. But that's why you watch it on YouTube. Hey, YouTube. How about this real quick?.

"Start your morning. Keep starting your morning with much. I will start tomorrow. That worked out for you. I will start tomorrow with brink. VRI and K anyway, thoughts on Kansas, you wanna talk about Texas maybe missing the N sibling tournament? I think we're talking about Kansas. Having so many guys, like McCormick, who can go out and get you 15 and 15, go get you one and four too. But he can't go get your 15 and 15. A baji Brown Jalen Wilson got 16 and 8 Tuesday night that's two straight really good games from him. Ricky Martin played. This was amazing about Kansas. Rick Martin was voted big 12 preseason player of the year. Probably shouldn't have been, benefit of hindsight, but he was. And he doesn't play. You don't even notice. He does play, but doesn't do a lot. You don't really even notice. Remember Martin might really be ultimately a very good role player for Kansas in Kansas could still win the national title. The pre season big 12 player of the year could be a role player for Kansas and Kansas could still win the national title. So that speaks to Bill self and his staff and what that KU program has become. I don't become like it happened over the recent years. Forever. I was gonna let that slide. What that gave the program is forever been. This is what this program is slowly evolved to in the past few years if you haven't noticed. It's really been interesting to watch Kansas become a nationally relevant program. I know you realize because we talked about it before. Like the last time this didn't have a Nate Smith memorial Hall of Fame coach was whoever the guy was before Larry Brown. All right, I'm gonna spoil this for the live listeners. I've got an absurd Kansas stat. Trivia time. All right, let's go. You need to get it within three years. Okay. Okay, because I had someone I had a reader asked me this question for my app make section of the court report. And I went and I did the research. What year was the last time and play along live on YouTube if you want? And obviously at home as well. Kansas lost back to back home games. How long ago, how long has it been since Kansas lost consecutive home games at Allen field House? When do you think that last happened? Much. Is much the correct answer. It's not. Jeez. No, it's happened. It's happened, but it was three years. But was it last season? No. Okay. Well, then it must have been I mean quite obviously. 2009. Incorrect. Seeing some votes in the comments right now, none of these are the correct answer yet. Well, then it was obviously. 19 is it a 19? Does it start with a 19? It starts with a 19. How about that? It's clearly 19. 90 7. You're still too recent, my man. Jesus, lord. The last time a couple more seconds for people. What if it started with an 18? Wouldn't that be something? It would be something. Good dates back to the demise of the dodo bird. No one has guessed the correct year yet, but we got one who's pretty close. So the last time Kansas, this is absurd, dude. Last time Kansas lost consecutive home games, February 15th, 1989. 1989, that's more than 12,000 days ago. Bill self was an assistant at Oklahoma state, which oh, by the way, one at Kansas that season was part of the streak. I think K you actually dropped four consecutive home games that year, somewhat ironically that comes to season after Danny and the miracles. And if you really want to mind bender, we are more than ten years further away from that date than that date was to the breakup of The Beatles. That's how long ago this was. More than 30 we're coming up on 32 years here. Absurd. I think I can't prove this. I mean, I could, but I'm not gonna. There's no shot in putting this much effort into this. This has to be, this is an active streak. There's a chance this is the longest streak of its kind in the history of men's college basketball. To go this long without losing back to back home games at any point in the season, you know, we're talking more than three decades. Maybe, maybe UCLA did it with wooden, but he wasn't there that long. I don't think that any team's ever done this. I think what Kansas is doing currently has never been done. If you find information that proves me wrong, we'll give you a shot on the podcast, but I don't think so dude. They haven't lost back to back home since the 80s. How nuts is that? It's pretty nutty. And so anyway, in conclusion, that's why this program has evolved in the past couple of years. If you haven't noticed, Kansas is actually pretty good. Yeah, Kansas has gotten really good over here in recent years. I see folks argument in the YouTube chat, somebody ruined the world for today. Don't be that person. What if I every morning?.

"Like, you gotta keep up. Yeah, Jake. Jake definitely an alpha dog. I'll tell you about the Kansas. Like Jalen Wilson, David McCormick, you talk about getting back to who they were. Jalen Wilson last average 11 points of game 7 rebounds. Shout out a respectable 33 perception of three. I mean, you know, I know he missed those games early and he's trying to get back into that rotation. But if they're going to compete for national championship, Jalen Wilson and David McCormack got to get back to where they were a year ago, giving them a little insight scoring. And then I just think Jalen Wilson gives him a versatility that takes pressure off of look. I apologize. He could be player of the year. Christian Brown is I think fun as well as anyone. I think that to finding what I call being selectively aggressive because he can score up picking his spots, maybe that big shot the other night against Stephen F Austin. They've got pieces. But if they could get those two guys to be just a get back to who they were, then you got another wing defender because they haven't guarded the ball as consistent as they'd like. And you've got a guy that can get them to the free throw line that I think Kansas is a final four team. It might be without him. But those two guys would make a big difference for their resolute. They could figure out a way to get the lightbulb to go on those two guys. I think they'll be they're dangerous. That's a great point, Seth. And it's one of those things that I have to constantly remind myself of, even though I know it to be true that if a team puts up a bad week or bad performance or things like that, they're still going in the laboratory every day and working on it to get better. And I remember last year with Syracuse, like you talked to Jim behaim and it seemed like, you know, it was a death march every day. Like we can't beat anybody. We can't see kids. And the only time he was positive, if you told him that Joe lenard has them outside the tournament, then I say you don't know what he's talking about. We can win. Then they became good. But they kept going to practice every day and working on their deficiencies and getting better and getting better get better. And there's nobody better at that than Bill self. He's one of the best coaches I've ever been around in any sport. And so they've got all the pieces. I think they're going to continue to improve as they go along in the season and they'll be there at the end. I know that. Yeah. And remember guys, David McCormick got off to a slow start like this last year. And.

"Looked like he was played at a different speed. You know what I mean? Yeah. It really did. It did feel that way. And I didn't know, and I thought, I think Bill selfie and said, we're a little bit overrated for how high we are. I thought they lived up to it. I mean, I don't want to Michigan state didn't look great. I did think Kansas did, though. And I don't know if you're going to get superhero performances from osha agbaji, but if you have that, if you have a dialed in, roaming Martin, if you have a real post and Dave McCormick, if you have Jalen Wilson coming back, Christian Brown didn't give you much. That's a pretty good nucleus for a team in the big 12 and certainly to make a run for a national championship too. Yeah. No I agree. Okay. Penny. Do you have any other strong thoughts here before we get out of here? Is there any strong thoughts? Yeah, I don't who plays it who plays an 1130 on Friday what kind of cruel and undress part. What did I do to deserve that? UCLA was a UCLA Villanova, 1130 Friday night. I know for you, you're probably like stretching and getting to run in, but that's a tough one for the east coast for us over here. I'll say, I'm like not super excited about that. That's like a 6 30 game for me. That's like a normal game time for me. Like, that's not. No, no, no, it's not 6 30. It's what it would be like three 30 or four 30 for me. And it won't end until like 6 37 o'clock probably. So I'm not, I'm not like wildly excited by that to be honest. I'd rather have the active just because the season has started and it's so early in the year and filling over UCLA UCLA's second the country Villanova's fourth in the country. Let's do it. But it's tough for us to east coast, guys. We'll survive, but it's tough. Yeah, and did you watch any of the Villanova game tonight? I watched about ten minutes of the second half. They're up by a million. They're doing jump stops, a real possession. Just a Moore's really good. That's the kind of get a read when you're up by 40 50, but I think you have like 27 points. He looked very solid out there. Yeah. I caught a decent amount in the first half. Yeah, really liked what I saw from Justin Moore really liked what I saw from Brandon slater actually as well. "He was happy to be like the point guard. He and dewan Harris kind of split that role early on in the game. And then in the second half, he went and got it, right? He took 9 second half shots. You got it. Yeah. And I didn't think that too many of them were outer rhythm. Maybe a couple of them were, but I think that him getting the rest of his teammates involved at a high level is a much better way and starting the game that way. Getting everyone kind of into the game is a much better way for Kansas to attack. And then letting him finish late, letting him go get it late. And then people that were there media members that were there said that he said all the right things in the postgame as well. Like that's exactly what he that's how he wants to attack. That's how he wants to go about it. So yeah, very, very impressive. And the other thing about if oh shy is this guy and is there legitimate primary scorer who can be a 20 point per game guy 19 point per game guy in Jalen Wilson can be what we think Jalen Wilson is going to be, you know, somewhere between 13 and 15 points per game. Well, then you're kind of slide and Remy Martin down in the pecking order a little bit to where maybe instead of having to be in the top guy because we thought that he'd be the top guy, just due to his personality, right? Right. Like now he's the second and third guy, even at times he's the third guy. And that's a much better role for him, I think. In Kansas, like he's gonna be a little bit more capable of playing well within that role. So I really liked what I saw from Kansas and I'm really excited to see what this team looks like when Jalen Wilson comes back. In terms of prospects for them, like, look, I don't really think they have any other prospects. If we're just being candid, Christian Brown is interesting. Jalen Wilson is interesting, but he didn't play tonight. So, you know, I don't know what else to say here with Kansas in regard to the NBA..

"And memorable in violation of old NCA rules. Best I can tell, he did this in June. If he would have done it in July, it's not an issue. But because he did it in June, it was at the time of violation of NCAA rules and the punishment will be a three game suspension. And so, you know, the timing, the young man had poor timing. And I understand why people are fed up with it, like, come on. What are we doing? He's an all American and you're taking them out of it for what? But if you wanted to argue the other side of it, it was June 2021. There were roles in place, even if the rules were about to be changed. And, you know, he broke the rules. And arguing that the rules changed after the fact, I don't, you know, it's just not a very good argument. Well, there's a lot of context around this and to anyone that wants to compare Mark fuse suspension versus Kofi coburn versus Jalen Wilson. They are different situations being dictated by different factors. Jalen Wilson was a coach, athletic director decision. Mark few was a university president war decision. And this is an NCAA decision. They're not remotely the same. And remember, now remember this because it seems to many people bring this up. Not that it excuses. I'm just trying to give you more background as to why all of this happened. Kofi coburn was no surefire thing to return and play for Illinois this season. The fact that he has puts Illinois in the conversation for preseason top ten team and, you know, maybe the best team in the Big Ten and all that. But Kofi coburn was gonna maybe go to the NBA. And then he was in the transfer portal. So for Kofi cobra and GP, he might have been done at this point when he was doing this. I know he was like still considering Illinois, but like, at this point, like what he was doing, he was like, I don't know if I'll ever play there again. Why not? I get it happen why it happened. Here's what here's what brought Underwood said. When the release came out on Monday, we are disappointed with the three game suspension because there were unprecedented factors and altered timelines, love me some altered timelines GP. Multi universe theory. Here we go. Underwood continues related to his decision to ultimately withdraw from the NBA draft and return to school. Once Kofi had a full understanding of where he stood regarding the draft, he made an educated decision to return to school, work toward his degree and continue improving his game. That said, we understand and respect the NCAA's decision in this matter. And we will move forward accordingly. As always, Kofi's attitude and outlook remain upbeat and positive. He is focused on helping his teammates prepare for the season. And we can't wait to have him rejoin us on the court. I think Illinois got off easy. And I don't say that meaning, I believe Illinois that coburn should have had a longer suspension or anything like that. I'm saying, I think the answer to a look at this case, all the details involved with it. And otherwise, might have had grounds to suspend him for 6 or even 9 games or ten games, otherwise. The fact that it is just three games in Atlanta, when it landed, I think, is actually probably I'm going to criticize the incident at the start of the podcast and maybe give it a little bit of a dap here at the end. I could see a situation where if it wasn't right up on July 2021, parish when the rules changed. And if we were still kind of in that in between, what's really going to happen deal? This would have been a longer suspension, depending on the gear and how much he sold it for, et cetera, et cetera. And I also don't think this is going to matter. I think Illinois is going to win all those games. It's got two small schools and marquette. Now marquette will be a little tricky, but they're gonna be down this season and I think Illinois without coburn is good enough to be the golden eagles. We'll wait and see. But I don't actually think the suspension is going to matter to Illinois in the win loss column. But as always, I reserve the right to be quite wrong. I don't think it'll matter either. I think they'll still start three O and it'll fly by. And then you'll look up and he'll be ripping rims off the backboard very quickly. If you listen to this podcast, you know, I hate the rules. I hated I've always hated those rules. I hate all the rules. I hate every rule. But like, you know, you broke the rule and there is typically a price to pay for that. And so it is what it is. It reminds me a little bit not to get too serious again. But. One of these things is a very serious issue. The other not really. I don't mean to come across like I'm comparing the two. It's just something that popped into my head as I was watching people discuss this. The Ahmad Arbery case down in Georgia is getting ready to go to trial. And I was listening to a podcast about it because that's actually the type of podcast that listened to. I don't listen to sports podcasts at all. I was listening to a podcast about that. Because on a surface level, it was like, okay, this should be a rap. Like, you know, three white men chased down an unarmed black man who was jogging. Wanted a rifle Adam and shot him. It's on video. Like, this is easy. And what you find out, according to experts, it's not easy, because of Georgia law at the time of that shooting, killing. There is actually a reasonable chance. These men are not going to be convicted of murder. Based on what the way the law was written at the time. But what's interesting is that this is like the one thing Republicans and Democrats can agree on anywhere, especially in Georgia, is that that video of his killing was so.

"So K is a standout Jalen Wilson has been suspended for the first three games of the season after a weekend drinking and driving incident. Bill self announced the suspension on Tuesday. It means Jalen Wilson, he's gonna miss next Tuesday's game against Michigan state, the champions classic. He's doing also gonna miss next Friday's game against tarlatan state and the jayhawks, November 18th game against stony Brooks. So dead leg, here's the question. Will this development cost Kansas? What is expected to be a three and a start? I think a very well could. Jalen Wilson is practically speaking probably a top three player of importance on that K you roster. This is a serious issue. And we've actually had a lot of DUI things in the news in the world of sports. Obviously, Mark few going back to Labor Day. We'll be serving a shorter suspension technically than Jalen Wilson. For his DUI arrest. And then there is the awful devastating and horrendous story that came out on Tuesday, Oklahoma, Oakland, Las Vegas Raiders. Star wide receiver Henry ruggs was impaired while driving and killed another young woman in that car wreck. And that incident is a torturous reminder of just how unacceptable and unavoidable and avoidable, something like this is. So Jalen Wilson suspension, if it had been longer, frankly, I would have had no issue with it. You just can't have this ever. No matter how old you are, whether you are 18 or 98, can't have it ever in our society. It's something that's still plagues society because people imbibe and suddenly think that they're better to drive than they are. So yeah, could it affect Kansas ability to beat Michigan state of the champions classic? Sure. But that's not the biggest takeaway from this. They want to have them on the floor. They might lose the game if they do. That's just the fallout to a much bigger issue. And to Wilson's credit after the fact, his statement actually read pretty sincere. He understands the severity of what he did. And Bill self suspension, you know, this doesn't surprise me. I thought this was gonna be the minimum when it came to what he had done and he'll own up to it. And he will not be on the floor to start the season of the two games after that? I read his statement. And yeah, it struck me as a guy who knows he made a mistake sincerely. And I wonder if that's more emphasized because his statement is released on the day that the Henry rugs tragedy happens in Las Vegas. And reading the details about that, I mean, they're just horrific. You know, one way to put it is that a young woman's car was struck and she died. The more specific way to put it is that she burned to death in her car. He hit her car from behind at an excessive speed. It burst into flames, and according to police, she was couldn't get out of the car. She burned to death in a car, 23 year old woman. And it's just a reminder of how quickly obviously your life can end. Totally randomly. Like this young woman, this one as far as we know, was doing nothing wrong other than like nothing. She wasn't doing anything. And she just got hit from behind by a drug driver and burned to death in her car. What? But on the other side, for Henry ruggs, this guy who, by the way, just had a baby last year, he was with the mother of the baby in the accident. He was instagramming from top golf the same top golf. We've been through a million times in Las Vegas. And was just having a night out and then decided to get behind the will of a car, clearly, when he shouldn't have, and he took another person's life, he ruined his own, his career, I mean, I'd never say never. It's the NFL. But, I mean, he's going to jail. In Nevada, if you're convicted of that crime, felony, DUI, resulting in death, it's a minimum two years federal prison. And possibly 20. So he's going to jail and to just, you know, I guess everybody who gets a DUI even one that doesn't result in something as extreme as this, I guess you always regret it. But my God, I can not imagine him trying to wake up today and come to terms with how he has just first ended someone's life, but completely wrecked his own. And if you're jaylen Wilson or anybody else who's been in a similar situation recently, I think that's got to resonate with you. Like, okay, I was unlucky that I got called, but boy, how lucky was I that nobody got hurt that I didn't get hurt. Right. I have ruined the start of my season. But outside of that, you know, jayle Wilson's gonna be playing in February. We won't even be thinking about this anymore. So on one hand, he's very, very, very lucky. That he's only going to serve a three game suspension. And that's because the alternative is that sometimes drinking and driving instance, they lead to what happened early Tuesday morning in Las Vegas. As for Wilson as a player for people who maybe didn't watch canes is too much last season. He was their third leading scorer and leading rebounder. And that was as a red shirt freshman. He'd only played two games the year before because he broke his ankle in the second game of the season against UNC Greensboro. He was second in the big 12 in double doubles last season. And you might remember, he missed the jail's first round NCA tournament game that was against eastern Washington because he tested positive for COVID. Returned for the second round game against USC. But only played 9 minutes. He just wasn't the same. And they got blasted 85 51 lost to the Trojans. He didn't close the season too strongly. He was held to single digits in each of his final four games. So he was better early last season than he was late. He was on those national player of the year list early in the season. It wasn't as good late in the season, but he was still really good and he matters. Big time. And now Kansas is going to have to beat a good Michigan state team without him. And I guess I would still pick the jayhawks to win the game, but certainly this makes that a more difficult challenge inside the guard. We will preview and make our picture that game on our Monday podcast right before right before the season starts. I did reference Wilson's statement. I'm going to read it to you in full right now. He said, quote, to my family, Friends, coaches, teammates and jayhawk nation. First and foremost, I want to apologize to all of you from my mistake this past weekend. I accept full responsibility for my actions and I'm extremely remorseful in my lack of judgment. I know it wouldn't be fair for me to ask for forgiveness right now. So instead, I plan to show you the true man I am and my true character through my actions and behavior moving forward. Again, I am truly sorry. It's a nice statement and yeah, we'll take you out your word, Jalen. And the rug thing is certainly all the more illuminating giving the timeliness of all of this happening. And I would think it's something that is impacting the Wilson in the situation surrounding Kansas, even more so because that Jalen Wilson is a college basketball story Henry rug is a national news story. And so once you see that penetrating into your environment and is discussed amongst people in your community and it's on television and in your social media feeds, it has even more even more resonance there. But it'll still sit. And Kansas will go without them Tuesday at the champions classic. So before we get out of here, should be noted Jalen Wilson is not the only notable player who is going to be suspended for the first three games of the season. All American Kofi COVID is also going to be suspended for the first three games of the season because of an in double-A violation. Specifically, he was selling.

"It have a future NBA draft lottery pick? I don't think so. Does it have a future first round pick? I think it will. Maybe. I think that I think that will be that player was a 35% career 35% shooter from three 52 from two. High level defender. I think that if Kansas is going to be what we think it can be top 5 team in the country in that discussion, then inevitably usually you will have a player that will work his way into that first round discussion. I think I will be that player. But you've hit on every player of note. The remmy Martin stuff is going to be what I would keep an eye on. You mentioned average 19 points per game last season. 49% from two. Good, 34% from three. Okay, 76 from the line. A high usage player and preseason big 12 player of the year. I don't think he's gonna apologize he's gonna be the best player on the roster, so I don't know. We'll see on that. He is clearly the addition that makes Kansas the pick for people that like me that are picking Kansas to finish first in the league and get all that. But we'll see. I'm intrigued by that, but I'm more intrigued about Brown making a jump. How he does translating as an up transfer, right? And then Jalen Wilson, who had moments last season, but was an inconsistent player. He started great. Dead. Made one out of every three attempts from three. That's just okay, was less than 50% from two point range. That's just okay. I think we would both agree that Jalen Wilson can not have a repeat of last season if Kansas wants to win the big 12. Got to be better. And it's not just Christian Brown making a jump. He's just got to get back to making shots the way he's clearly capable of making shots. Like he shot 44% from three in his freshman season. And then that dropped down to 34% in his sophomore season. He's not a 34% shooter. And so I've just got to assume, let's split the difference on that, take it up to 39%. Well, that's a different basketball player. And when you add, so now, let's say he's shooting to his capabilities and you add rimi Martin, who is, I don't really just non shooter, but he's certainly not a great shooter, but what he is is a great creator playmaker. From the backcourt. In Kansas didn't have a lot of that last season. And so, you know, now you've got a real playmaker and Brown is shooting the way he's capable of shooting. You got a team that I think and you know by definition where they're ranked in the preseason suggests that they're capable. But this is a team that went to national park. Question for you. This is a quote. Here's a quote. We can become Omni national and reposition because actually we are not tied. Culturally or physically. So we are actually are in a great position to leapfrog tech end quote. Who said it, successions, Kendall Roy? Or Texas's.

"So really, all you're losing out on is the difference between n, i l money and the two-way deal with the upside of making your start of your career, just way easier off, right? So, I mean maybe she gets a guaranteed deal and I'm just like, off on this, but I would be surprised if that happened right. Would be surprised, maybe he knows more than we do. Maybe his feedback was different that we have and he will look good. One, when there's group workouts and he can actually play and get up and down five-on-five. He's never going to like look the part staying, especially athletically, but he's he's a gamer, too. He's a super job. Out there near your plane and you're making reads, kind of as you go and on the Fly. He's the guy that I would want my team. Well, folks, we, we are at 10:00 eastern time. Where are you right now with the world? Is Matt Pennock for a question. I'm in Brisbane, I'm in, I'm in not Atlanta, we, we advertise Atlanta. I'm in Cartersville Georgia, which is about an hour outside of Atlanta. Sure. Who is, who is from Cartersville this year, what draft prospect? Oh gosh, that's, I don't know. But you know what, one of the high schools that we rent from is where Trevor Lawrence played. That's a good that's a good tidbit, but who's actually off Cartersville can't remember? There might be a Prospect Park yourself. So you're in the east coast. Chinese you think. So, let's two hours, I guess he still has not announced what he's doing, I guess how Johnny like, you know, I work tomorrow yet, 8 a.m. games had starting. We can't as much as the loyal handful of people that would stay on for us to talk about nonsense, a wait for the announcement. I don't think we're going to make it during this Thursday. Recording. Yeah, I don't think that's going to happen either. I mean the last couple of guys here are I mean Marcus car. I mean Marcus car. It seems like it's going to transfer somewhere else which is probably the right month of talking r c is going to transfer, probably the right move, I guess like a chance future. Yeah most of these things going to transfer. You can skin Jalen Wilson and by Chicago is for them, we didn't talk about Kansas. Yeah, let's try. It bhaji in jail and Wilson getting those guys back was big. I kind of figured that they would get both of those guys back. I'm not a huge fan of either of them. In terms of the draft, right now, both of them do very different things. Well, like Jalen's going to have to shoot it and then OSHA is going to like really needs a high-level Defender, like not just like in a solid one, like he is..

"Saturday. Two pm eastern number twenty three kansas at number seventeen west virginia inside joe missoula coliseum. You can watch it on. Cbs america's most watched network is the network stars west virginia minus to give me a reason to pick kansas in this game. There's none right got a is. It justifiable k. This has dropped four straight road games by an average of nine point eight points. Those games were oklahoma state. Baylor oklahoma tennessee. I figure we're in agreement here. I'll take baba steam. I gets gets a win. We'll be stunning. But there's just not anything to base picking kansas right now gotta go. Wvu kansas six and six in the first two quadrants with all six losses coming in the first quadrant cases is not bad cases. Just isn't great. They're just like look but one obvious difference between early in the season in like recently. The jalen wilson is five of twenty six from the field in his past three games. This should nineteen point two percent. He averaged sixteen point three points and nine point zero rebounds in kate us first game. We were like whoa look at this. Now he's past seven games didn't seven point one points five point seven rebounds so he has slipped. Kansas has slipped west. Virginia by the way hasn't been great five and four in the past nine games three and one in the past. That's that's okay but five and four in the past night. yeah. I mean again. Kansas lost four straight road games. And i know it's not going into joe missoula coliseum under normal circumstances but like it's still a rogaine.
