"They plan to the light like Archie Graham takes us that bad under the lights. Fair enough, either. One either one Anyway. School Baseball Co. Yeah. Go, 7 30. Remember? He called out Jalen Hurd on our show. And now look as grand Cohn wrote. Looks like the nineties got played by Jalen Hurd again? Yeah, sounds were very devious. I want you to do that to the 40. Niners. 8 35 this morning, Susan. Slots are going to come by talks more giants. "Shut off that mind and go and that's really easy when you feel prepared. How Shanahan, eager to get the party started a party, of course. The upcoming 17 game regular season and we think some postseason for your San Francisco 49 ers called Shanahan. And other various Niners of import spoke today. After after practice of practice, By the way, Let me go ahead. Give this injury report before we hear more from Kyle Shanahan. Fred Warner, a practice that included in full Brandon Aiyuk. Both Ford, Dre Greenlaw and Jason Verrett. Um Trey. Lance, by the way, did practice in limited fashion. He was seen throwing, throwing the ball. And without splint on his index finger that had the microchip and it's so that is good news now for who did not practice. Um it's a list where Guys on it. You don't want to see any guy you expected. Javon Ken Law, Kevin Givens and Emmanuel mostly did not practice along with Jalen Hurd, who may end up on IR To start this season. Cal Shanahan spoke about the Ford and Nick Bosa and says that he's gonna let these guys run. Let that chopper saying he's not going to put those cats on a pitch count. I mean, you know, I don't plan on having pitched council guys. I mean, you plan on guys, you know who you don't play every single play and using the packages and stuff, but There's only so many people up on game day, so the numbers are never set in stone with numbers. She have goals and how many times you plan on being a personnel groupings and stuff like that, But it's not like the preseason where you say this guy is a place and he's out or this guy's 15. Um, It's whatever you have to do to win the game and what you have with your eligibles and packages. But those guys have been on pace to get to this game and played a high level and I love how they looked in training camp. And hopefully they'll continue have three good days of practice and have a good game on Sunday. Let me let me translate this for the people in the bad guys. They're healthy. We playing them next question. Yeah. I mean, there's only as he said. There's only so many roster spots. It will be interesting to see if they keep an extra D line mint up. So they can rotate their their incredibly deep defensive line throughout the game. But I mean, this is this is, you know, I don't want to say this to lay up because the road game in the NFL But this is Kyle Shanahan and a fully stocked offense going up against the NFL's worst defense last year dead last and yards dead last in points. Um so you know this This should be the 40 Niners with a big lead in the 40 Niners running the hell out of the football in the second half. There are no labs. The NFL it is, aren't there are teams that are in survivor pools That will tell you as such What? At a 13 point favorite lost out right on. The Raiders beat the Chiefs last year. Yeah, I mean it, It happens. And, you know, look, there is a positive to, uh, Detroit lands have been the microchip. The Niners will never lose him. They're always gonna know where he is. Absolutely. That's a positive. Absolutely. I think when you wait, there's just run them over. One of them. Supermarket scanners Exactly belongs. Had one of Maybelle arrested Easy. Yeah, yeah, Somebody turns like Snapchat. You always There was no trace that Yeah. Look, I mean, on paper, Yes. This team, uh, shouldn't have a problem with the with the Lions, but it is And we talked about this a couple days ago. It is on the road. And I think that Miyoko, we're talking about it. The teams that there are bad teams at home for openers can do some funny stuff. So I think this game is a little trickier. Then, then, maybe the talent would suggest because you look at it and they should mow the lions. They they that the matchup of their defensive line and Jared Goff. You couldn't ask for much better. Jared Goff is a pocket guy. You put people around his feet and his face. He's inaccurate. He hurries. He doesn't really get out of the pocket in and create a whole lot, so that this should be tailor made. For the 40 Niners. But goofy stuff happens all the time in the NFL and and and we see it, so I I suspect to get the win. I think it'll be probably harder than maybe most would expect. But if they if they won by 21 that wouldn't shock me. Either because that's what the talent would suggest. It's a double digit victory. But yeah, this is a This one's tricky. I mean, you look at it you go. Okay to one else start that would doubt that would That would be your inclination win win, but back to back at the road game in another road game, not coming home for a little bit. I mean, it's important because they have most of their tougher games at home. This year. They're road schedule. Isn't that bad? If I remember correctly, I think the toughest road game for maybe Tennessee. And that's not all the way until I think December they may play Tennessee something like that. But other than that, the road scheduled pretty damn manageable. For these guys. They get the tougher teams at home, which is a good setup for the 40 Niners. But I'm just excited that that it's back starts off tomorrow and then Sunday, we'll have a full slate. Post later games and it's going to be it'll be fun because, unlike two years ago When they made that run to the Super Bowl. There were no expectations that year..

"For the Niners today. That list includes Jalen Hurd, Given Ken Law Emanuel Mosley and Kevin Givens. Let's tell you who did practice today. Trey Lance practice or is currently practicing. In a limited fashion, but there is a video good video out there. So I'm our good friend Matt. Morocco's Twitter accounts are can be our insider that trey lance spinning footballs. Spinning them well. So Trey Lance, that finger no splint that had the microfracture in it. He's able to practice today in a limited fashion. What does that mean? I don't know. But who did practice today fully? Know what that means. They practice their ass off. The list includes Brandon Aiyuk, who's dealing with a hamstring issue. Aaron Banks Nick Bosa. D Ford. Full participation in today's practice. Drake Greenlaw and Jason Verrett. So there you go. You are in the know as far as the Niners. First practice in advance of their first game of the season, coming up on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, seven o'clock In the A. M. The pre game starts on 8 10. Is it on 18? Tim? It's on kgo on kgo. So plan your morning accordingly. Seven a.m. wake up, be there with Larry and John and Dennis and and Tim. You're not gonna do that, Are you? Yeah, That's right. "I don't know. Whatever they decide to do it like he's not going to be a huge part of their plans. Early on, anyway. He was like, uh, third on the depth chart, so they got other people ahead of him. But man alive. How can you ever trust this guy is gonna Be healthy for more than a game or to me. He hasn't shown it. How could you even believe that so I don't know Whatever. Not if we're frustrated. Can only imagine how frustrated college Shannon here it is, you know, and and obviously he's someone who is around him every day and and knows much more about the situation. The knee in particular. Than than we do. You would think he'd be frustrated. But Obviously not frustrating enough to just cut back. It's just there is something about heard, and that combination of skill size and speed At wide receiver It's just Shanahan is just probably if it's just for a couple of games, But if it's the right to games or the right handful of games, Kyle Shanahan just wants to be able to just open that bad boy up on the freeway to stay Larry with the car metaphor. Just open that bad boy up on the freeway and just blow everybody away. He must have a group of plays. That involved Jalen Hurd that he's just looking at him like board. When I unleash these cats, they just make a bus for me and Ken while I'm still coaching. You know what I'm saying? He just must be looking at those plays like I'm gonna kill him. As soon as Jalen Hurd can practice and play. I mean, think about this guy was talented enough to play running back in the S E C and then play wide receiver, you know for his second team and have and really do well at both. So he's a great athlete, but he's also had some crushing injuries, and sometimes the injuries overwhelm you. And your body just doesn't respond. I mean, I can't think of anybody, not anybody. I'm sure there's like Jesse Sapolu. I know had a couple years blown out early in his career. Nine are stuck with them eventually got healthy. We all know the rest being won Super Bowls. He was pro bowl or perennial, you know, in a foundation piece, but it's just really difficult. It's really rare. When you have big injuries like this to be able to, then come on the other side and get beyond it and have some meaningful NFL runs. So We'll see. The The good thing here is they don't have to. It's like the cut down where they have to cut him free. Now he's legitimately hurt, Probably and they can put them on the I R. And they can stashing for six more weeks and retain his Deal, but I would replace him while you still have them kind of a thing Just because you can't depend on them. That's really and then if he gives you something, then you consider it found money, But I think you're foolish if you depend on them. I can't wait till him and Marcus Lattimore get healthy, right? That was like the worst draft choice of all time. I got blown up catastrophic injuries. Oh, yes, I need that guy. I mean, that was a trend. Bulky special. I was sure wasn't it? I was just about to say, I think it was just about to say trade. Bulky, looking at Jalen hurts like It's my kind of guy. Yes, Michael. Did you say wide receiver with a knee injury? Oh, my kv in San Francisco goods and loose. Let's get have been here for a workout Herbs. What do you think? You know, for a fact, you know, for a fact, there is an alert on his phone for when Jalen Hurd gets put on. Well, hell, yes. It'll start screaming. That phone will be like, Yeah. Oh, God. You send it down, killing killing herds on waivers. Let's get him in here. It's funny because it's probably true. So very true. O like I did it. I I hate to make light of this. I'm not really making fun of the injury or we're all I'm openly rude series. So am I. I'm sure he's worked his ass off to get back and we all want to see him bash. At some point, though. It's like nobody thinks he's faking it or or no, not at all. I don't I don't believe the bottle agency the knee, is it right, and I don't know that it's ever Going to be right. You would think after a year off, Okay, This is good. And then one game out. And maybe on the I r at that point, it's like, okay, you know what, Uh, and again it would be a much bigger deal. If he were a bigger part of the team this year, if he were like, let's say, second on the depth chart, and he was planning on playing him a lot of snaps, and then he couldn't rely On him. Like I said, he's third on the depth chart, so it's not like he's a massive part of the plans, although I'm sure he had some stuff that he would have liked to run with them. But you know what? It's not going to affect the team one way or the other. This isn't going to be like one of those things are like, Oh, man, they would have done this if they would have jail and heard. That's not the case. But we all want to see him. My point is man. Mean that trains waiting and waiting, and it's been waiting a long, long time. And there's a lot of passengers on board. They would probably get low. Restless right about now going. Yo, man, We're going to get out of here, not we're about to run out of coal. Before we pull out of port. As good as Deebo. Samuel has proven to be and as Impressive and as intriguing as Brandon Aiyuk has been, and is Jalen Hurd and Dante Perez. Just to pick two guys on the opposite side of that spectrum have been Big big disappointments where you look and cope. They were supposed to be. You know, big parts of this deal and got nothing out of it and two different guys. Two different, You know, situations in terms of why things are Did not work out in in Paris favor and currently is not working out optimally for herd. But you were still looking at those guys like, okay. Yeah, I can see it. I can see it now if we could just see it. And with with with Perez, we just never saw it and with hurt. We're just not seeing it. Hopefully it doesn't turn into a situation where we never see it. Great Coach said that one game stretch where God didn't say. PETA said that 15 game stretch was like, okay. Now he's kind of so I can kind of see it. I just never got the feeling with him. That football was as important As maybe it should be the guy in the NFL. I'm not saying you have to. You know, you have to consider yourself a football player like that. Tell you I'm a football player. You don't have to be that guy, but it's got to be really important to you. And I'm not sure that that was never the case. For him because there were there's definitely was more there. But I don't know if it was as important to him as it was to Kyle. It's hard to play that sport. If it's not important to you, it's hard to play any sport professionally. If it's not important to you, but You can almost not like basketball. But if you have the physical attributes and you have the talent and you got a little bit of drive, you can do it. Baseball. There's a great amount of dedication, but you can, you know, kind of like Football because it is such a physical sport. And because your body is the The the literal vessel to make it happen. If you're not down with it, and all of the stuff that comes with playing football and what happens to your body, and 99% of it is not good. If you're not mentally ready to deal with that, or you haven't compartmentalized it. You ain't gonna play. You're not going to play. Well, and let's be honest here. I mean, if you're a great receiver, your fast and you're tough, and he in a in a football sense, he was neither. And he didn't have the 40 time. So when you don't have the 40 time, they don't. They don't worry about you beating them off the off the line. So then they get up in your face. And now it's about how physical can you be at the line of scrimmage and he just got manhandled at this point, rerouted. I mean, he just never established any presence on the football field at all. Didn't catch the ball inside showed some alligator arms didn't you know? And then it wasn't fast. I mean, he didn't have Virk. He wasn't a vertical threat. And he couldn't beat the jam and that's and if you want came over physical and do the stuff you need to do with your body. You just It's not gonna work. You have to make that deal on some level, don't you? That this is going to be. I'm going to engage in three hours with the car crashes every single Sunday. If you are not willing or okay with that. Are you going to play? Just Tyreek Hill. He's awesome. He's incredible receiver he, you know, as tough as hex..

"And they have the guys that I would think. Richie James, Jalen Hurd, Travis Benjamin, You know those are probably the three guys. You know the Mohammed Sunu. It was with the team for like, three weeks last season and End up cutting him during the season and then bringing him back. So I don't know what they're expecting by bringing him back another season. Heck, I don't know what the new is thinking by going to a team that cut him in the middle of the year, so I mean, that's one position. I think where the 40 Niners. Really? How that they don't have much in and if you start looking at you know who behind I You can Samuel these last year you You knew going in that kill Kendrick born. He's put together a couple pretty good seasons. He could be capable starter this year. It's there's kind of taking a leap of faith. I mean, I think Larry a Duke tweeted yesterday. That, you know, G b d. V Westbrook. And doubt to me he would be the guy that is the 40 Niners. Add somebody from this point forward who could actually make the roster? He would be the guy somebody who has Background and was a productive slaughter Receiver missed most of all, Mr Almost all of last season. They got injured in week. Two, Um But it's I think, at this point, it is wide open. Who could be that number three receiver they They have some candidates, but no one has really done it at a consistent level. First off. I'm shocked. An agent was touting his client. What is this world thinking the same thing? He assured him. He assured him Tom, The guy that pays, uh, the agent. Has given the agent assurances and the agent gave the same assurance is celebrity. He will be healthy either. I know, right? I'm off my answer. Is that its representation? Larry, Are you going to sit for this? Are you going to want to hear Larry? You don't have no choice. Take it to the bank Dogs. Doug's word is OK. Oh, my word is oak. Jerry Maguire That worked out Well, uh, Beat him to me, Matt. This was always more about the money than the draft pick that they really wanted to. They could have given up a few more draft picks. They thought this was the guy to to win the championship, but I mean, you're talking. What would have got Samuel coming up? We've got both the coming up in a couple years. We want Warner coming up and we get. I mean, the Niners got some decisions to make. And that's an extra, You know, 11 12 million that they wouldn't have For the next three years. If this was a one year thing, maybe you give up some draft picks and take a run at it, but I I don't know how they were thinking. But for me, I would. I would have been well, we could. We could do that. But I don't know We got a lot of decisions to make. We like our team and I don't want to have to give up more money for a really good receiver. But another guy where we were. I mean, we got two guys will hope to find a third. Do you think they looked at it that way at all? All you had 100%. Yeah. I think you're right because it was two fold, right? I mean, it was a trap picks. Which I mean, they could have done it. It could have easily done it. You know, they had the two third round picks for next year. They traded one of them to move up to get Trey Lance. They traded one of the first round picks last year, so yeah, they could have Done that part of it. But if from what I understand kind of internally, a lot of the discussion was if we were to do this Can we still keep Jimmy Garoppolo? And I mean they could have. Yes, but they just they don't want to get in that situation. Where the term cap hell Kapil loved it. Yeah, it's been a long time, but No, that was right. At the time that New York family was taking over and and Prague Moratti was was counting the You know he was the Kabbalah gist. And and I think the the Yorks kind of came to the conclusion then that we don't want to do this again. You know, don't want to don't want to get in a point. Where you're you're just spinning on your credit card and keep pushing money out. And, you know, paying that interest rate and all that stuff. Uh, you know, figuratively speaking, of course, and then You keep doing this and you keep doing this. And then all of a sudden, like, okay, we're going to have to tear it down and build it back up. They don't want to do that. So, yeah. I mean, they could have easily have kept Jimmy Garoppolo and said, Hey, we will, you know, well? We'll give you whatever $20 million signing bonus guaranteed will push the money we can fit in all this stuff. They just don't want to get to that position where if you keep doing that, and keep doing that and keep doing that, at some point You're going to have to tear it down and cut some players and and then move on. So That that I think had a lot to do with it. The $15 million for this year. The 11 I think 11.5 for next year, the year after, you know if you do that, then. Okay, well, Are you going to be able to sign Deebo? Samuel? L ever signed him to an extension. Um, are you going to cut Julio Jones after just one year. You know? What are you going to do here? So I do think that? Yeah, I think that My guess is the money. I agree. I think the money they both are significant, right? The money and the draft picks, But I do think the money that was earmarked for Julio Jones along with the age. Had more to do with it in the drop picks. Matt Miyoko Hernandez insider joining us here on the Tolbert, Kruger and Brooks Show anything jump out at you. In this in this voluntary minicamp. Well it well, I'll be out there tomorrow. Um, last week, I guess I mean, and this is highly sounds crazy, but it sure looks like Trey Lance. Just one week later looked a heck of a lot more comfortable than he did the week before..

"You've said in as much as you know. We did the exercise last week. On how many teams win the super bowl We talk about with the forty niners a lot there. I think that people have a strange kind of anti jimmy. Garoppolo biased And i really do think the even if he plays they they can still win games in a big stage. I think that the the division is really hard and that complicates things. And i just don't know you know in in a in the one by era If it's going to be easy to come from division like that and and get the breaks. You need in the playoffs danny kelly. Nfc west aficionado. Where are we on the niners this year. Yeah i mean wouldn't shock me. They were super bowl team two years ago. So it's not like. I don't think it's a wild stake. I i do think that And we talked about this a couple of weeks ago and we talked about the teams that could make. I think they need to have some things. Go right for them. I think you know whether it's jimmy. Garoppolo taking his game to another level or trey lance coming in and playing really well as rookie. I think those are two things it would certainly help. I don't know if they have as good of a defense as they had two years ago They still have a lot of clearly. Cornerback you could be an issue corner maccabi issue but at the end of the day like honestly when wounds fries me that much like a death so such good skill players And and like it's it's they're the best team by far at running after the catch and shanahan puts these guys in perfect situation to catch the ball have space And just make defenses pay I'm really excited to see who they kind of have is like third receiver. Whether it's maybe jalen hurd who. He was as a freshman or sophomore. Whatever he rushed for like a thousand yards as a running back and then he then he changed over to a to the receiver position. The third rounder. You didn't hurt his first two years in the in the league but He's another guy that's interesting. I mean i don't know who's going to be the third guy but They may not even need him with kills depot and there but Yeah this is just. This team has an identity I think their offense line will be strong. You know they got. They got shanahan calling plays which always makes it really difficult for defense for defenses to to figure out and then of course if their defense gets back to what they were a couple years ago then they will look like a juggernaut. I just think there's. I'm not quite as confident as evan. But i do i. There's absolutely like in the realm of possibility. Wouldn't surprise me that much. I wanna get nor am evans. Take on how the nfc west shakes out is q. I evan if you could rank the four teams nfc west. Where would you go right now. Now i mean clearly i think the forty niners are the best team but The rams i think are really really They've got those two studs on on defense and they've got a bunch of other really good like role players in the well. I don't know you know losing brand staley that i'd be a significant loss. I do think that stafford talking about eating stafford talk about quarterbacks that can elevate the players around them like. I think that stafford is going to. We're gonna see a big year. I think tyler higby. Or you know maybe cooper cups best season in and robert woods making more plays downfield instead of just everything. Around the line of scrimmage. Like the. I think he's going to help take their passing game to another level. The jared goff could could not reach. I think that they're really dangerous. And then you gotta russ seattle. And i mean i think the defense is looking a lot better and the offensive line is looked. I mean they got gave jackson thought that was one of the better moves of the offseason. They're they're dangerous and so as zona so your points about the division are very well made and and an an acknowledged. that's how i rank them though. Right now. San francisco rams seattle arizona nora. Nfc west and bananas general so nfc. West i think i think evans order is is right. I will say. I really liked the seahawks. You'll hear a little bit more about that in a second. But i don't think. I think it's like they're so consistent but it's easy to overlook them or something The one thing. I just want to reiterate. I think we've talked about this on other shows Trae lance was born in the year. Two thousand i hate it. We might seek knowledge. this is it is inherently untrustworthy. You are so young to do even remember two thousand and we already do this. Yes i two thousand. Remember the heritage youth thousand okay. It's borderline all right. Well but that you know what i'm not gonna win the super bowl either so two thousand i was in. I was in my prime which is banging and hockey goals in orlando of mathematic. Prime i to twelve or something you wanna give your seok sleep. Yeah so my second. Leap candidate is hawks ovens of coordinator shane waldron and i think that he will make the leap to being a you know one of that group of head coaching candidates. Who's just sort of on all the lists in a lot of the discussions. One of those guys and i think it's pretty simple. The seahawks are good team with a great quarterback so there's already a great infrastructure for him to thrive but he can get a lot of credit for doing it right p. carols a defensive head coach and they're looking for for someone who's going to give them a little bit of energy one word that pete carroll has used and some of the players of used as they've gone through they've started to get into otas there is tempo and that's been something that they've been saying that he's really going to bring to them and they're super excited about and i think that's really really really important because where we seen the sea hawks offense look the best with russ in recent years. It's when they're in two minutes situations or other times when they're situationally forced to pass forced to move. The ball quickly forced to use some tempa. If shane waldron can come from the rams a team. That's really good at using tempo just regardless of the situation now where he has russell wilson to talk twenty-five receivers. I think he can really get the most out of russ cover up some of the offensive line issues that i think been mitigated but still do exist and really just help everything mayor gel and i think if that happens then you know you sprinkle in a little bit of us to work for sean mcvay and boom gotta head coaching candidate. That's the.

"On the surface, the largest deal in NFL history at the time, but you know beyond those first two years, it's just been a year to year kind of thing. It's not like Jimmy Garoppolo said. Tremendous roster security with the 40 Niners. So I think you see that a lot as far as the you know his fit within the locker room. Within the team is this is a guy with blue collar roots from those Chicago's suburbs. Dad was an electrician. You know what wasn't wasn't really highly touted, coming out of high school because he played all of the games in the mud, and you know all that stuff matters when it comes to our guy fits on the team, and it really matters. In a situation like this hits right when his potential successor has drafted a number three after the team spent an astounding amount of draft capital get him, You know different guys gonna react in different ways. But I think the 40 Niners really pleased the Jimmy Garoppolo has has really stayed true to his roots in the way that he's responded to this and you decided to just get back to work. And there's an obvious way to get Jimmy to play really well, and that would be to add another big weapon to the passing game. I think we we started talking with you about this the week of the draft before because find no in Atlanta was talking about trading Julio Jones and it's Seems like it's gonna happen, maybe in less than a week's time when the calendar turns to June next Tuesday. David. So you've got a nice piece online, and I'm gonna skip the first three narratives because they're just ridiculous, but they're the one about affording Julio Jones. He's not too old. He's a great player. His contract is not bloated, but There is the salary cap is a bit of a problem here over the cap as the 40 Niners and 17. Million $663,487. So how would they do that? Whether what they have to restructure Jimmy or convert some of it to a bonus. Other players If they wanted to do this, And there's no reason why you wouldn't if you could come up with a draft pick compensation. But Justus far is fitting him on the roster from a cap perspective. How does Perak pull this off? It's gonna be really hard, Greg and you know that 17 million figure that's not even counting Trey Lance's contract yet which hasn't been signed. So once you account for all the rookies, and you look at it from a 53 man perspective. 40 Niners, especially after Jeff Wilson's injury that cost him even more money because it means another running back and have to make the 53 man roster. So they're down under 10 million and Julio Jones gonna cost 15 million with his base salary. If you acquire him this year, so you can already see that that that doesn't match up. Obviously, you can restructure players. Theo, you know, push the cap hits back into future years. But there's another huge issue with that for the 40 Niners, and that's the 2022 salary cap. The NFL just came out and said that 208 million will be the ceiling for 2022. The 40 Niners already have $194 million of liability stretched out. Among only 35 players for 2022, so you can see that they're already kneeling nearing the ceiling, and we don't even know what the floor is. And if you restructure guys this year Inevitably, that makes your 2022 cap bill bigger. So I would argue that 2020 twos and even bigger issue in terms of wanting to acquire Julio Jones. Then 2021 is in the 40. Niners have to consider both. They're going to do this now. Is it possible? Yes, it would be a really tight squeeze and would put a lot of pressure on this working out. You know, you couldn't have Julio Jones show up and play another eight or nine games because of a hamstring issue. But as you saw in the piece, I think that I think that his track record speaks for itself. I think this is the Hall of Fame caliber player. That could make something like that worth it. But it would require the 40 Niners to really gamble in a financial sense that Julio Jones and Jimmy Garoppolo could put on, you know, shows and in 2021. So that the 40 Niners might even be able to to recoup some draft capital after the season to really make this worth it on the spreadsheet because the draft obviously the cost controlled way to to move forward in the 40 Niners are running out of picks on that end. Even the Marty's unit, So you asked the question about Jalen Hurd and again. We saw him early. In fact, Pops first preseason games, scored a couple of touchdowns and he's had the injuries then he had a knee last year. You gotta Yuki got Debo. But that third spot Richie James is sitting there. Travis Benjamin has looked good. Where are you sitting in terms of looking at a slot guy looking at the receivers beyond I Yuk and Deebo. I mean, if you bring in Julio, then everything changes all the search of the Tulio. I mean, he's a unicorn. But so let's just toss that out for a second because I still think that's more unlikely than then. Likely at this point, but The way it's working now, I man it's always hard to say this because everybody jumps on me when I say it's Jalen Hurd is healthy because everybody says, Well, of course you're not gonna be healthy. It's Jalen Hurd. But boy Anybody who saw that? That preseason gaming in Dallas back in in 2019. You can't not, You know, think about the possibilities if Jalen Hurd is on that field During the regular season for the 40 Niners. And when we're talking about a guy who was a power back in the S E C, and an outside wide receiver in the big 12, I mean, if you were gonna build a player for Shanahan in the lab You would make him a power happiness CC on an outside receiver in the big 12 and you know that might be why Jalen Hurd and is the dealt with back issues in his career and why you started to really run into these Injuries with the 40 Niners because he was so heavily used in college and somebody different ways, especially the power back at Tennessee. But God, I would love him for the 40 Niners in that big slot roll. That's the way that the 40 Niners are moving offensively, Shanahan Recently has really emphasized size, especially in that slot role he he'd loved, You know, kind of the blocking advantage is that he can get the guy could be, um, you know actors a tight end in the run game, and he can also become one of those yak monster's one of those big targets in the past games, so E thought Jalen Hurd yesterday He seemed to be moving around pretty well off on the side. They're not really doing actual practice work yet. But if that goes well, the 40 Niners will be looking really nice there at that third wide receiver spot, and that's why would you really be circling right now and taking a look at through training camp? This camp thing that shoot. I'm reading about it. Now it's just came down to 208.2 million is a problem..

"And by the way, the offseason practices go through phases. Like right now they're in quote. Phase two. Dave, You see me See me doing the air quotes here. Dave Air quote early go phase. Two is what they're in the middle of right now, Interphase two. That's how we're getting this offseason program started. It's the It's the first on field sessions for veterans and rookies together because they have that rookie minicamp. That's where all the Ricky showed up last week and did a little bit of media think they did that Friday to Sunday that normally phase two last like three weeks long, where they're doing this offseason workout stuff practices exercises for all the players are doing on field stuff there like full pads, but the rocking the helmet there jogging around and throwing passes to outer No. Doing it like partial speed. Just Getting their feet wet, getting used to each other seeing each other again, and Theo NFL Players Association initially and said they didn't want all these players doing this. So we weren't sure how many 40 Niners were gonna show up. The 40. Niners have 91 guys on their off season roster, but they'd have not released. How many people were at this practice. We can say this is gonna go all week long this week. They're doing this work out. Before they enter Phase three. Then they get in the O. T A's and the Goth of the mini campus. The only mandatory practices the players have to show up for before the start of the actual practice season. So no reporters air there are on the sidelines and they're not only will be out there are allowed to be out there till OTAs get going again. But Jimmy Garoppolo was there. And George Kittle was there. Fred Water. We're all there yesterday. Also guys like Eric Armstead, Marie's Hirst Art in key. Ah, lot of these guys took videos of themselves. Kevin Givens, who had some trouble this offseason on it is getting that situated. I think he was arrested this offseason in Baltimore and is awaiting the litigation of that He's at the off season workout as well. S so we're looking at a lot of these bigger name players or guys, you you would hope to be out there. A lot of times. This stuff is small potatoes, and it's got so you're like, Yeah, whatever. They should probably be getting their work in. But some of these guys showed up because they're getting paid to show up. Jimmy Garoppolo has $600,000 tied to work it out. It's a bonus for for taking part in these off season workouts, so probably good that they gave Jimmy Garoppolo that incentive. He's there for 600. K s O. It's important, Kyle Shanahan said for him to show up and do this stuff, and apparently, he's been big in the film room. Obviously, we know about Him. Colin Trey Lansing. It'll be nice to have another FCS guy around. I mean, he may just be being a leader, maybe being a teammate. And and that's the most you can ask for. For a guy who just had the heir apparent to his job drafted at number three, just a couple of weeks ago. So some of the guys to pay attention to who are going to be in camper who are there right now? Marqise Lee, who the 40 Niner signed the former Jacksonville Jaguar had his best season in 2016 83 passes 60. Excuse me. 63 passes for 851 yards. For the Jaguars. She actually opted out of last season after about it knee injury in 2019, So he did not play in the in the Cove. It's season in 2020. He could be a dive for the 40 Niners this year. We'll see He's sort of a burner so we'll see how he recovers from that knee injury. And again he would be playing alongside the lights of guys like Richie James. And by the way, they've added some other guys who were here in this this offseason practice camp with the 40 Niners. Check out the wide receivers they brought in. And look, Brandon, I you can indeed Bo Samuel when I've seen people over the last couple of weeks really start toe. Seo ratchet up their hype of Brandon I. You can let some other guys that the 40 Niners drafted in the last two years we haven't seen yet. You're chairman herds and your Juwan Jennings, The kid they drafted last season of the seventh round that we were kind of waiting to see and haven't gotten a look at any of these guys. You Jalen heard two big touchdowns against the Cowboys and the Cowboys game or a Broncos game preseason game in the last two years. Still haven't seen him hit the field yet. So cross him off game. Here's some of the other receivers that Aaron Camp right now, are you Samuel Trench, Sir? Field, Richie James. Travis Benjamin, the former Carolina Panther, right. Travis Benjamin hanging around now. Big body Dude. Marqise Lee, Mohammed Sunu, Jalen Hurd, Jawan Jennings River, Craig Craft, Kevin White and undrafted rookie Austin Watkins. So they're your wide receivers that are hanging out on. Don't forget this is a season where the 40 Niners well, the NFL has changed the rules on the numbers. The players have to wear like it used to be. And I guess until this year at the NFL level you had numbers that were assigned each position. I was wondered how they decided that way back when he's back in the day like you used to have receivers of war, the teens, right and then it was like nobody for a long time. Until when I was a kid. The old guys remember doing it was a Keyshawn Johnson and then Roy Williams didn't number him the Cowboys receiver. Not that happened. Not the basketball coach. Nice work, Dave. Thank you. Rocket number 11. Nicely done s O. They changed the rules now. Where you can have like defensive backs like in college. You have single digit numbers, wide receivers gonna have single digit numbers and by the way, that's gotten much bigger again in the last couple years. Tebow Samuel 19, right, Brandon, I you queers Number eleven's. You've got guys were wearing these smaller numbers personally, I like in 80. Like in 81. I like an 88. I like in 84. I like to 10 born 84, you know, So here's Here's what Some of the jersey number changes are going to be. This year. Two cornerbacks are changing their numbers for the 40 Niners..

"Left side 25 2015 10 5 left side of the end zone Touchdown Ohio State's 32 yards on the touchdown run after a 32 yard catch and run the play prior praise sermon. As the Buckeyes on the board for this man baseball his life. It's your guest host of the lead off spot. Bay Area news groups. Giants beat writer Terry Crowley hear him by saying to your Apple Home pod play KNBR. Trade to the Bay was true. On Thursday night when the Sanders killed 40. Niners made Trey Lance the quarterback of the future. It was true on Friday night as well. Third round draft pick Trace sermon. Joining the 40 Niners offensive contingent out of Ohio State a lot to like about this 40 Niner strap. That's how every fan base in the NFL feels after draft weekend, All 32 teams felt like their team came through with an upgrade. But I really do think that the future of the 40 Niners has changed over the weekend because this team has an offensive identity. Now with Trey Lance Ah guy who can extend plays a guy who can run the football as well as past the football and Trey sermon, joining this offense as well. A second round draft pick Aaron Banks. One of the largest offensive lineman the 40 Niners have pursued and cow Shanahan and John Lynch's tenure. I'm really excited about the run game possibilities, And to me, that's what Kyle Shanahan has always done best. His dominate opposing defense is through scheming up favorable run matchups, favorable defensive alignments through what he could do on offense, and now he has more athletes to help out this sporting matters. Offensive system trace sermon an interesting pick. Of course, because the 40 Niners for the past few seasons have gone with wide receivers in early rounds of the draft. We saw the 40 Niners do it. Not so successfully trading up for Dante Pettus. We saw them try and get Jalen Hurd in the third round. We all know how that has worked out so far, although San Francisco's still remaining optimistic about her chances of impacting this offense, But I like the certainty that you get would trace sermon who produced at Oklahoma who produced after transferring to Ohio State and produced on the biggest stage is like Last year as a grad transfer with the big 300 yard game that we talked about in the Big 10 championship. And then, of course, playing well against Clemson later on. So one thing that I want to touch on what Trey Lance's John Lynch's comments that post draft about what they saw in him or Trey sermon. I should say what they saw in him why they felt comfortable going after running back. So here's the 40, Niners general manager on the new running back out of Ohio State. You look at our backs in the past, and I think one common element is the speed and you may Look at his 40 time and say he doesn't really fit but sometimes 40 times can be deceiving. I You know, I think What speaks to us is like is 10 time was very good. And so you see that burst You see that ability to stick his foot in the ground, break tackles and hid it in a hurry. And then he's very adept at making the you know the free safety. The second Second level defender Miss. And so you know, they really good out of the backfield in the past game is well, I think he's a good fit for what we do. It was exciting, you know, colonized started this morning kind of watching the backs and it was fun. T o be able, and I think the move was prompted by just a growing feeling that Trey was a really good fit for us. And I think we stayed patient. But when we felt like, all right, our luck's about to run out. We made the move and we're happy to be able to do so. Make no mistake where he most hurt is still the home run hitter for this offense when the 40 Niners have a schematic advantage when they think that they can take a team deep through the run game. Most her will be the guy in the game for cow Shannon. He's the one with the breakaway speed, but where he moster has dealt with injuries. At times. He's probably not as effective when you give him the ball more than 15 times per game. The 40 Niners have seen that over the last few seasons, and they saw how effective he could be in the 2019 2020 post season when he was fresh. And well rested. He dominated against the Minnesota Vikings have the historic performance against the Green Bay Packers. And that's why the 40 Niners felt that it was necessary to go out and get Trey sermon to aid this backfield. He's someone who could have more of a day, one impact than Trey. Lance. In my opinion, I think that Lance is gonna have some growing pains. Lance is gonna be someone who you're not going to work into the offense. One week one. I really do think that the 40 Niners will defer to Jimmy Garoppolo at the outset of the season. Look, if Trey Lance passes him in week two and week three and practice that I do think that they will make that change. But I really feel confident that trace sermon is going to be a big addition. Right off the bat through this 40 Niners often so is exciting. His tray lances for the next decade Trace sermon gets me a little book more excited for the month of September when it comes to watching this 40 Niners offense on the field. Another guy that I want to touch on from this 49 of drafts. Been round pick Aaron Banks. I thought it was really interesting. The 40 Niners targeted a guard on offense because you don't often see that. In the first few rounds of the NFL draft teams were much more reluctant to take guards and they are to take tackles because tackles provide that premium value. They can stop pass rushers on the edge There number one job is to protect the quarterback. Keep them up right. And so the 40 Niners already gave all of that money to Trent Williams in the historic contract they picked up the fifth year option of Mike McGlinchy said There was Really no need for this team to go out and get a tackle this year, but they still wanted to fortify the offensive line with Laken. Tomlinson started in that left guard former first round pick who they traded a few years ago from the Detroit Lions to get him and he's been great. Ever since Arriving in San Francisco, they went out and got Aaron Banks and El Sereno Native Bay Area Guy grew up 40 Niners fan out of Notre Dame. So Michael Glenn, She's got some familiarity with him. And I think that banks is someone £325 to isn't necessarily the proto typical offensive line. And for Kyle Shanahan Zone scheme, But he is someone who offers ah lot of intrigue at the position because of how different he is in couch. Shanahan talked about some of that why the 40 Niners pursued Aaron Banks. People talk about. It's always one small guys, but that's not the case we want..

"That you feel like you'd like to see get get their name called by the 40. Niners today. Well, I mean, I'll start I corner wise. I think they still need more corners. And I love Carrie Vincent from l s U is a 5 10 corner. Really, really feisty Ellis. You defensive backs always seemed like they make it in the NFL. He He's a real athlete. Keith Taylor, whose Teammate Molden are already got drafted. Taylor's a big 64 long arm kind of Kela Witherspoon body type, but he's really cocky, and he dominated at the senior Bowl practices and even in the game. I really like him. So to me, the secondary Richard account and Tyree Gillespie or two safeties account from Georgia Gillespie from Missouri. Um are that are really interesting to me. On Then there's a couple edge rushers today. I mean, Theron Jackson from Coastal Carolina is a really good, high motored pass rusher and a coastal Carolina coastal Carolina. Yeah, and then this one really get you. This is one of the sleeper of sleeper names, but Chris Garrett is a player from played at Concordia. Well, it's an unbelievable, unbelievable player. I mean, you really have to see this guy to believe it, but incredibly productive. You sacks galore. I mean, he's got ridiculous stats at the Concordia level. Ever. Concordia is, but I did see film of him and he is He's lightning off the edge. So you said you saw film guy Did she film actually have filmed nice, eh? So, but I mean, that is, Do you not know these things about Larry? This is like I mean, it's it's all day. It's every day. He claims to have a family. I think they're people he hired. What is what he's out about, because there's no way he's actually paying any attention to him with how much YouTube is watching, John Miller said. Hey, congratulations on the Draft coverage. Evan listening, I really enjoy it. I said, John, when you hear all those details, think of the total man hours that I have neglected Macro. Jeez, you don't get this knowledge easily Trust me now, But there's gonna be the other guy that I really love you go for special guys. Jacob Harris is a gigantic combo wide receiver. Wide receiver tight end There's a couple of these guys like this when you see me vocal from Stanford and Jacob Harris from Central Florida. Huge guys who could make you know, play in a number of different roles but run fast like running the four threes. So a couple guys like that would be would be nice if they came their way. Wow, That's impressive. Here. Let's let's let's test him because ah, guy I like Tonto follow with his draft knowledge and whatnot is Guy out of Denver by the name of Ben Albright. Larry. I know, you know, I know. You know, Ben. He just said that the guy the Patriots grabbed moments ago was one of quote his guys. In other words, He thinks he's somebody who really could pop out of the fourth round room. Mom J. Stevenson running back out of Oklahoma, and we know the Patriots solve that reputation that it's just like, Hey, you be the running back boom. And he'll score three touchdowns on week one or something like that. So so what do you think of him? Because he's going to be in theory, potentially behind Mac Jones here over the next year, too. I love him. I think he's a terrific player. I mean, you know the weight is what's his weight. You know, there was a lot of talk that he dropped some weight. If he did, he's gonna be even quicker. So he's like a big back who almost like built like a fullback, But he's clearly a half back. And you know if he can get his weight under control and not have, you know, baby fat you're talking about somebody. Who maybe maybe a real steel. Yeah, man. He's a big back for sure between the tackles runner. Stevenson was grated Oklahoma Well, my question is, I guess it's to you, Larry. What I mean, don't you think the 40 Niners really need a solid third receiver? I'm talking like that. That flanker that little wire Lee that quick, quick separation type of guy. Is there someone like that in the draft? You know, it's a great receiver draft. For sure. I mean, it's It's a terrific receiver draft. Um, the guy from the University of Houston Marquez Stevenson is a difference maker. I mean, this guy can absolutely we'll talk about 43 speed and just, you know, stretch the defense would be an incredible slot player. It depends. What they're looking for. Is that you know they still have Jalen Hurd here. And I expect her to show up in camp ready to play. Now, Doug Hendrickson we're gonna have on the show later is his agent will get a little report card on heard at some point, but he's the bigger physical 65 to £20.220 pounds slot, but they could you know, the other guy that I think is interesting. There's a couple guys Thailand, Wallace from Oklahoma State. Probably should've gone day one. He's still there. She Smith, who was a buddy of dead of of the Niners wide receiver from South Carolina. Who depot Samuel their buddies. She Smith is an undersized slot receiver that you're talking about Dennis, who's like Definitely can make plays and really, really impressive player on tomorrow. And Terry's another one from Florida State. Who's just you know, has great measurables and and had some injury problems of Florida State. And then probably the most productive guy is a guy named Jalen Darden, who played in North Texas, and his numbers are unbelievable. As far as production. He's a smaller, diminutive guy. But man, he's his productions. That probably is good or better than any receiver in the entire draft. Right up to the top With Devante and Jim are chasing all those guys. He just did it in North Texas. Yeah, And then that's what I would like to see in these. These later rounds, the 40 Niners to go out and find that one. That little step that little receiver that quick receiver kind of what they're hoping for Dante Pettus to be kind of be a guy that gets him quick separation make some big plays after he catches the ball, that type of player, maybe someone that special teams like 40. Niners haven't had A good kick returner. Punt returner, you know, on the squad. I think that would help the team out quite well. It's possible that Amri Thomas could could help out on that front a little bit. You'll hear from Amri coming up in about a half hour, so I got the chance to sit down with him last night. But coming up next we'll welcome our friend Peter Kurten back into the conversation, See what he thinks about what the 40 Niners have done. With Dennis Brown and Larry Krueger. Mark Wheeler Day three of the NFL draft our coverage right here on the sports later. This is the KNBR 2021 NFL draft special on KNBR, 1045 and 68, these sports leader..

"It sucks for Jimmy Garoppolo because it looks like he's not their future anymore. After signing $100 million deal few years ago here in exact, Wilson is significantly more talented than Sam daughter. Significantly improved bull. Puts more talent around Jalen Hurd Tenacious. I want to know why the Miami heat with Jimmy Butler bam out of by you. Take us back to a young Torii Hunter before he became a name that everybody knew. Man. Um, well, when I was a kid, I was my mom she taught out of the town. She was a teacher, and now I will go to school and then after school, I will go to my grandparent's house who were down the street from the school I was going to and I didn't play baseball or anything. And I was about nine years old. My granddad actually made me sit on the couch with my backpack on my back and the Cubs, you know, they played all day games and the Cubs in the seventh inning, six innings. And there was a guy by the name Andre Dawson. Parole. Jerry Crowe was dripping all of his jersey. Yeah, and I'll have the same thing. I had a girl as well on my granddaddy. I could never understand what he was saying. He always I told you who and sit on the couch. That's all that hurt. That's hysterical. The Haughey's ahold of favorite play for the Expos. Obviously great outfield back in the day, Tim Raines, etcetera. Let me ask you this. The I? You just said something that really caught my attention. You said you were about nine or so when you hadn't played when, when you grant that, thankfully because he made you a lot of money by by city behind on that couch by the way. So, too May and we've got a lot of parents listen to the show Baseball season's just starting nine years old to me, Not that it's too late, but baseball's a skill that you gotta learn early. I mean, there's a lot of kids to start playing football late that pop Stephen basketball that store playing late that pop track and field that pop but baseball. It's a learned skill you didn't feel May be overwhelmed is the wrong word. But how long did it take you to actually learn how to hit Because nine. Everybody's playing by the age of nine. That's into baseball by that point. Yeah, I mean, I was a football guy started playing football when I was spied on by played up at five. So we didn't have travel baseball or anything like that..

So we go up to my buddy's parent's house and private six pack in me feeling pretty good, Pretty bust, right? And he had a robe. They had a row boat and I'm like, Let me jump on the rowboat. Right and I went out by myself and And I know that, thankfully, nothing bad happened. Of course. I mean, you're sitting here but your room, but it's hard. I mean, if you don't know how to properly roll sequence, I just kept going in a circle, right? And I kept getting more and more pissed. I went up, jumping out and swimming and pulling it back The lance, right. This is what the Eagles they're doing. They're going in circles. They don't know how to work work. The or that's a good analogy like they fired Doug Peterson. Because Peterson doesn't get along with winds were once doesn't whatever. So you get rid of the coach Now, I think Peterson was expendable. So do you, But if you're now going to get rid of Carson Wentz Okay. Maybe maybe you misread that situation. I mean, the season's over the league years is a month away a month and a couple of weeks a couple of days away. The 70 year is the 17th is the start of the year, but his contract is fully guaranteed by March 19th two days after the League year starts. It's fully guaranteed. So let's see here. All right, so this is from I don't know him, but I'm sure it looks like it's fairly reputable. The Windy City grid Iron and the contributor's name is Brandon Robinson, and he was recently on the bear report. Podcast so obviously bears heavy bears intensive. He says, quote. From what I understand the Bears made an offer that was bigger than what the cult had already offered. The Bears had previously offered two twos, so it was bigger than that when they went back to the okay, So whatever the Colts did, the Bears initially offered two twos and then it was shot down. They went back to the well and they offered more than two twos. Um, and the cold said that they weren't gonna budge. From what? From what? I don't. I guess this is transcribed. From what I understand The cult's had offered somewhat similar to what the Bears had already offered, but maybe a little less. But the Eagles wanted Carson went out of the NFC that much. They were able to maybe take a little bit less. So what the Eagles have been trying to do is to try to negotiate time and time again, through every single reporter that will listen that they need Maura and they're telling everybody to ones and that's just not the case at all. No. And now the Bears are getting really impatient and I don't blame them that goes on and on. And if you want to check it out again, it's the It's the bear report podcast, Windy City gridiron contributor. Guys obviously piped in Brandon Robinson's his name and, you know, Listen, It's not like there are other options out there. You know, if the Bears the Bears could say, You know what? This isn't working for us. You're gonna call the Jets about Donald. I'm not that you know, I would think winces. Probably better. But there are gonna We're gonna go all that on the shore, Watson. You know, we're gonna get Jimmy Garoppolo from the Niners because they might. There's other quarterbacks that they could go on. Get yes. And the the thing is Bt the longer this goes on and the more noise they start to, you know, male grow around Carson wins in this potential eagles divorce because it I mean, it was hot heavy week ago we can half ago, right before the Super Bowl. S O. That's not going to ever is never gonna go back to like a like a tepid room temperature water. It's not. This is gonna be simmering for a long time. This this this this rift, this relationship rift that seems to exist between the Eagles. And in the Carson winces camp. Um, what that does, Bt is it creates like an odd and this is again. It's a locker room thing. It creates an odd locker room dynamic now. Fortunately for the Eagles Nobody is there right now, like there's no like players on around each other. They're not talking about this and they go left or is that not even open? I don't know, with protocols like the coronavirus protocol because everybody is probably home now doing their own thing because the season's over, I don't I'm not positive bt But whenever that opens, If so, let's say it opens in a month or so right around the start of the league year and guys and this is still percolate. This is still like Simmering and like bubbling up to the surface, and guys are now around each other talking about this, That's when it gets really like uncomfortable right. There's remember some issues that we would go. We went through about, you know, you know a player whether he's going to be here or not, And, you know, does he fit with this new system, and it just gets uncomfortable? Because you know that they're trying to push him out or he wants to leave, and they're not letting it happen. It just it gets really odd and disruptive. And it's the distraction. And then the match and the thing that you cannot allow. If you want success in your organization is distractions and right now the Eagles they've been sitting with distractions for I mean, going back to the You know, we 10 or whatever it was 11. The regular season. Last year is not a lot of distractions on this team, So it's no it's no. No mistaking. No wonder why they've had so much, um, you know, up and down nature failures, you know disappointments because they were not clean. They're not clear. There's no clarity within that in that organization. I can't remember the last time the Eagles had a favorable PR day. Yeah. That's right. But I can't either. I mean, maybe maybe the first game with Jalen Hurd may be made because even think about the way they finished up the season with Washington. Yeah, when they pulled him just right. I mean, that was that that wasn't really the start of the end for Peterson. They were stuff before that, but that was, you know. Appointed over terror. So listen, here's my prediction with wins. I believe that it's still gonna be either the Bears or the cult's, however, given the recent ineptitude around the Eagles organization, all right and indecision. I'm not going to rule out the fact that they will continue to turn off the Bears and the Colts so much that both teams turn their backs on them, and that they will then be forced to do business with a wild card team..

"Smart speaker. Every NFL team now officially has a head coach. It was announced on January 24th that the Eagles new head coach would be Nick Syriani. He spoke to the media about what's going on with their quarterback situation. We have two quarterbacks in Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurd. Center top notch. They're top notch quarterbacks, and a lot of teams don't have any and so just excited, just really excited to work with both of them. So does that mean that they will be an open competition at quarterback if they both returned That's something that we have to look it looking in value evaluate, and I'm not ready to say that either way, yet we're just evaluating our players evaluating every position. Let's let Eagles reporter Tim McManus evaluate Syria Anne's comments. P. Listen to Syriani today he wouldn't even commit the Carson Wentz being on the roster in 2021. That is a far cry from where this organization was. Just a few short months ago and tells you Ah lot about the current state of affairs. Remember, Whence has not spoken publicly since the end of the season. He has not signaled yet whether he sees a path forward and Philadelphia and its Syrian his job to help bridge the divide that was created during the 2020 season. He's already reached out to whence. He said that that conversation was a good one offensive coordinator Shane Steak and also reaching out to Owens, But it's to be determined how Wentz feels about coming back, especially with Jalen Hurts in the fold. So the right player right now. To take it slowly. If you can get Wentz back in the fold, then you think about maybe a quarterback competition Come this summer. That'll be a good one to watch play out. On Thursday, the Texans announced that their new head coach would be David Collie. He spoke about how he found out about how he got the job. And, of course what's going on with the show on Watson. Sean Watson's of Houston, Texas. He's a quarterback of the Houston, Texas, and that's all that loud was concerned about, and that's all I knew. And whatever was been said about what was been what he wanted to do. He didn't want to do all I know. Is this having been in this business this long? You know, he is a Houston, Texas and I want him to be a Houston, Texas. And the reason I'm in this position today is because I knew he's going to be a Houston, Texas, and so That the outside stuff that was been said wasn't around to me. Texans GM Nika Serios spoke about his position with Watson as well, organizationally just want to reiterate our commitment to Shawn Watson. He's had a great impact on this organization. The great impact on a lot of people great impact on the scene. And we look forward the opportunity to spend more time with him here this spring. Once we get started, and you know, we have zero interest in trading the player Hall of Fame, a head coach, Jimmy Johnson, knows what he would do if he was in Cali's position. If I was David Collie, I go knock on his door. I do whatever it takes. I put my ego aside and say, Hey, the best thing for you to stay right here. Make concessions, do whatever it takes. Do not lose that player. You know, as far as trades, you know, it's so difficult with the salary cap with the contracts. Well, really, what you're gonna do compensation wise to make trades, but the Shawn Watson you're dating. Kelly needs to try to keep him there. Try to talk him out of it. So the drama continues in the NFL and in college basketball as we saw another top 25 upset. Number 19, Illinois taking on number seven Iowa It was good, so let's go to the second. Your sumo Open quarters. Kennedy.

"To the game. We gotta play the day coming up. We'll settle on a poll question. Stat of the day as well make love in in the early part of this show. The first couple of minutes said that the Eagles won the hiring contest. With all these other teams they brought in yet Nick Syriani, the Colts offensive coordinator and make love in. I've given you ample time to make your case why the Eagles have made the best hire of all of these teams. Okay, you were talking about winning the press conference. Yes. The Eagles lost its so badly by hiring a cult assistant that no one's heard of. This guy's got to be a genius to hire him because they have to know everyone's gonna be like you hired Who He must be so impressive and my evidence is look at the final Four coaches charm. McDermott. No one knew who that was when he got hired. Andy Reid was a quarterback's coach. I think back in the nineties he had a little notoriety was a farmer who are the other two coaches that LeFlore I couldn't believe they hired him. I never heard him And why had heard of him, But I didn't know He was that good. Who's the other coach? We're missing 10. Bruce Arians is a little different. I mean, he would He kind of was over the system for years, right? Yes. Did he have a head coaching job? Like 15 years ago? He's been around But the point is like it was in Arizona. Yeah, head coach, Right? It's the guys that you never heard of. We're good, like John Harbaugh. So I was thinking like, if they're gonna hire next Syriani, he must have been really impressive right? Because they know the fan bases like what are you doing? I also wondered if you have the general manager Howie Roseman running this team. Oh, that's the other issue. And is he getting somebody who doesn't have a big personality that you're taking a little bit of a chance on But maybe you can dictate how you mold him as the general manager. That was the feeling I got. I don't know Nick Syriani, his resume other than he was with the Chargers. He's with the Colts, and I think he's surprised. A lot of people getting this job in Philadelphia didn't feel like he was on the short list or top two candidates. But, you know, teams don't have to tell you what they're thinking. As much as we want them to, and I applaud them. They kept it quiet. And if they got their guy for whatever reason, Good luck because the first order of business is can you fix Carson Wentz? And if I'm interviewing him, that's the first thing I say. Can you fix Carson winds and how Do you want to? Have to start there because the offensive coordinator and now he's gonna be a head coach. Can you fix him? Do you want to fix him? And then if not, then what do you have planned here that that that's what I would want to know. But if you think they want it because they got a guy who's not gonna win press conferences, uh Good luck. The Army club was kind of trying to be funny a little bit because there was this expectation that I'm going to say we were gonna get like a big name like a Josh McDaniels are Eric the enemy. And then they pulled this name seemingly out of a hat out of nowhere. But the Chargers did this with Brandon Staley, who will join us coming up next hour. That's why I kind of think I'm like all this might be good. You know, it might be a hopeful change. The Eagles are pretty lost right now. Would you agree with that? It doesn't seem like whatever they're doing is working. The reason why this is such a big deal. Mean the Eagles weren't any good. I don't know if they're going to be any good in the next couple of years. It's the Carson Wentz Jalen Hurd situation. That's the reason why people care about this job higher. If you didn't have a quarterback controversy, Let's say Carson wants just got hurt, and he's gonna come back. Nobody would care about this higher. They care about the higher because what it could mean for your team. If Carson Wentz goes to your team gets traded to your team. But if he stays in Philadelphia, they try to fix him. All right, we'll watch and at some point, you'll go ain't gonna happen. The reason why we care about the Texans is Shawn Watson. I mean, if you know is he in play for these other teams that other than that, you know, do we really care? Don't have any other players. JJ Watt won't be there next year. Does Eric the enemy? Get the job. If he doesn't get the job, then what's the reaction? What's the reaction with two? Shaun wants? What's the reaction with the media? What's reaction to players around the league like there were interested in that? But the Eagles I don't think anybody cares other than what's Carson wants his future Yama club. You know another guy. We didn't talk about Kevin Stefanski much when he got hired and he's winning like Coach of the year it What's his reputation? What have you heard about Cleveland? I know you follow the Browns just that he had. He came in with high marks that he was, you know, Offensive minded guy. You know, with Mike Zimmer in Minnesota, but he came in and I think had a game plan for Baker Mayfield and that's the key. He knew what he was going to do with his quarterback. He knew what he was going to do with his offense. It got tricky with Odell Beckham, who I thought they should have moved on before he got injured. In fact, I would still try to move on without him. Great talent, but I don't want him on my team. And I think Kevin Stefanski found out who his team was at the right time. And then they made the playoffs. Um, pony, I think about Eric the enemy. I wonder if he's ever had a conversation or its few tile with Andy Reid about being the coach and waiting. Because if I were him and you could somehow in next year or two or three, take over Patrick Mahomes at age 27. That would be more enticing to me than joining any other franchise in the league on I don't know that happens sometimes in college, where there's a coach in waiting rarely does ever work out. And Andy Reid 62, which She doesn't seem that old and coaching years no, and we'll check in with the chief's coming up here. One of the reporters covering this team. Just ask about has has that ever been brought up with Andy Reid of how long he plans on coaching. And Bella check, I think is 68..

"This is Maybe the most talent Nick Saban's ever had on offense, which is crazy to say, because of all the pedigree they have. The Julio Jones to Calvin Ridley's all of these players over the years, Jalen Hurd Soup. I mean, Jalen hurts, actually ended up having to transfer out on go play at Oklahoma for a year really remarkable when you think about all they have had to work with This to me is going to be as fun of a national championship games we've had in a while, and I know a lot of people still don't necessarily think enough of Ohio State not just based on a plane. A few games that they did like that was 20 continued to reference, but just also that I feel like maybe Ohio State didn't face the toughest competition when they did they beat up on Clemson. Okay, but And now they do it with the big boys. I think this is gonna be a closer game that people anticipate. Right, and I'm still figuring out Ohio State has even the Clemson game when they look great. Clemson played a terrible game, like their secondary was a complete mess blown assignments. It was very unclipped. Unlike That they would have gotten the full arsenal of Clemson with their play caller, Tony Elliott, who had to miss the game because the cove it maybe it would have been at least a little different and watching those games against Indiana and Northwestern and No, they just they didn't look very polished. But it's I tend to get some of these teams Grace because a cove it like it's it's in college football was such a mess game's canceled every week. You're just trying to get to the finish line. There really aren't hard set rules like the NFL did it Great. I mean, you knew what to expect. You might miss some personnel. You might lose him guys to the coded list, but you're playing the game. And here the protocols. It's very clear college was a mess. And so how state I give him a little grace for that, But I'm haven't seen enough to know that they're going to go in and dominate this game. I'm fascinated to see Krystle lobby and Garrett Wilson because so much attention is paid to Alabama's receivers and their offense. Those two Are a dynamic pair. To be sure, it's gonna be great. Can't wait for it the national championship on Monday night on ESPN and ESPN radio. Meanwhile, in Seattle, the Seahawks Trying to get back. It's now 30 to 20 with 2 28 left his D. K. "It doesn't It doesn't because coaches try to win, and inevitably there bad enough to get fired. What happened? Something that is not the same thing is the Jaguars Air jets. It is not the same thing because those organizations put those coaches position with the team stays the same thing. But you can't actually process this because again, your brain is too tiny. This is about to speak the Rams. So why did not engage just have to send everybody to lose that game? The Jets were thinking they were gonna lose anyway. Adam Gates wasn't though Adam Gates was not well, I don't gaze is not there to save his job. He knows he's gonna be fired. But that's my point. What happened with the Peterson has never happened to a head coach before. It is never had been no good ever happens. You can't go through 100 years of football. You have no idea history, the NFL where a team of your own three You want to know your own name. Your own team was a victim of this. You'd even know that in 1988. Bill Walsh does. That she's one of the greatest coaches ever, ever. He goes into a Sunday night game in the final week of the season, knowing that if he wins, the Giants are in the playoffs. But if he loses, the Rams are the playoffs, and he would much rather have the ram for the playoffs instead of the Giants. Don't wash purposefully loses that game. Phil Simms is irate. The Giants are irate because they felt like they deserve to be in there. And guess what? The 40 Niners end up winning the freaking Super Bowl more as so You know what? Show Bill Walsh. One of the greatest of all time is validated and why? Because he took a loss on a short term l for a long term victory, which is what happens in this legal the time in sports and let's go back to the Philadelphia Let's go back to the field with the team in position to win for three quarters and delivered in the fourth. Is that what happened? No, he didn't play anybody, but that's my point. And it's an organization of decisions that just Bill Walsh's call and then felt Peterson did that from the get go. We wouldn't have a problem with it. He also had Joe Montana start and brought in Steve Young. Now that doesn't sound like it's a huge downgrade because it's Steve Young, but he did the same thing. He went to his backup quarterback to ensure that Joe Montana couldn't be in there and you come back and win this game. We think the Niners players were aware of that the way the Eagles players weren't aware of this. Obviously, they're looking to fight Doug Peterson. The difference is that Bill Walsh had this incredible resume built up, so you're not going to question how he did it. He had won two Super Bowls and, of course, was in route to win Tomb or And you're not going to question what Bill Walsh does. It ends up validating them if if it ends up. What you can't figure out right now is if it ends up that the Philadelphia Eagles at the number six pick of the draft Ghetto Hall of Famer And the guy that goes Number nine is a total bum, Doug Peterson, Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Loria will end up looking very smart for this decision. They may They may but it's not Peter's gonna be around long enough. It just players. You're gonna trust them next year after what he pulled. I mean, the idea also that the players now will suddenly never trust their head coach. Get it all in the moment stuff. I want to go back to the Philadelphia 70 Sixers. We knew they were trying to lose for five years. We do organization was everybody knew which game any game out of the sixties was to try to win games. We what? We all knew that if The organization told the coach Brett Brown that he should lose. That was well within our expectations of that situation. We knew this. We all knew this now. A lot of people were not happy with that. The league wasn't happy with that. What Smarter. Cooler heads would prevail and say that ended up landing them Jo Ellan beat and Ben Simmons the only reason they're competitive. Now, The only reason is because of that, and had they landed a LeBron or Anthony Davis. It would have been a stroke of genius. And so what you're saying, though it's the same thing is that organizations don't always try to win every game and I hate to break it to you. It's the same theory. You take a short term loss for a long term gain. Which is exactly what Doug Peterson of the Eagles are trying to do. On Sunday again, I get that part of it. But but Once you take the field, all bets are off. You could put your team in a position to lose. You. Absolutely could do that at your organization was right. You care about your ethics and all of that again, It's just the optics, not the outcome for you. Yes. Because if they again if they sat, Jalen Hurd start the game said You know what needs some films earned this? It needs sun filled one out there to stump for four quarters. Something right? Well, guess what? You know what that was the Eagles position to do that. What the difference is is the Eagles organization thought they would lose the game. They were in a position now suddenly to win the game and their head coach looked all those players in the eye or busting their ass after busting their ass all year and saying Sorry, don't care about you guys learning this win. I have a game plan for a running quarterback gonna go put the stationary zombie out there. And lose the game. It is. You're it is your right Once you take the quarter field, even if the odds are stacked against you to try to win the game. That is what Doug Peterson should do is head coach. It's what any head coach do in any sport. Even if your organization and you as part of that pre game feel like you rested enough guys to put yourself in a position to lose. What you're in that position. You don't in the fourth quarter. Turn around go. Oh, no, we might actually win this thing. All bets are off. That's not a head coach. That's a chump. I mean, we're just gonna keep going round and round. We are. I bet you most. I betcha FDA old Twitter right now. Most people would agree with me. I really do believe that. Yeah. I don't care if most people agree with you. Just because something's popular doesn't make it right. Okay. What you are wrapped up in Is that there's semantics to the outcome that it can't look like that. And to me, it's always throwing a game. It cannot look like that. So it's okay to throw a game. But not if it looks like you're throwing the game. Yes. You know what? Yes, Yeah. You know what? That's the stupidest thing you've ever said. It's too hot. It's not that writes bear out of all the dopey things that you said it's okay to throw a game as long it doesn't look like you're throwing the game. You made the point about the Steelers and Browns. The Steelers were essentially throwing the game ahead of this game versus believable when they got in the game that Mike Tomlin coach to lose, or they within two points of winning the game. So it's okay..

So the Washington football team about to get a blast from the past here in Philadelphia, the Eagles just put in Nate Sub fell. The former late round pick of Washington Tol played quarterback Now. Jalen hurts now on the sideline. He doesn't appear to be hurt, but he He wasn't necessarily helping matters. Washington in front 17 14 now early in the fourth quarter, Jalen Hurd, seven of 20 passing the ball for 72 yards. He was intercepted in the first quarter that set up the Washington field goal. But hey, has rushed for both Eagles touchdown, so as literally the only source of offense for Philadelphia tonight he's now on the bench, Nate said. Felled is in and it's not the first questionable decision. Doug Peterson is made tonight for Philadelphia. The football team Alex Smith, intercept. Did in eagles or deep in their own territory. The Eagles Actually go for it on 1/4 and goal they don't convert. So the Alex Smith interception doesn't hurt them. Go figure Alex Smith, by the way, 156 passing yards He's thrown for both Washington touchdowns, one to Terry McLorin on the opening drive of the game. It's the first opening drive touchdown or score of any kind for Washington this season. Logan Thomas caught a touchdown pass in the back of the end zone right before halftime to give Washington the lead. So trying to hang on here in Philadelphia, a win for Washington means the Tampa Bay Buccaneers come to FedEx Field. On Saturday nights. They have already released the schedule for wild card weekend and as such, the Ravens will travel to Tennessee to play the Titans on Saturday on Sunday afternoon at one PM Baltimore with a statement win in Cincinnati, routing the Bangles with 404 yards rushing And as part of that effort, Lamar Jackson, the first quarterback in NFL history to rush 4000 yards in consecutive seasons, So they finish up the year 11 and five and they are one of the hottest teams in the A F C With five straight wins to close out the regular season. Final 53-man roster projections for all 32 NFL teams
"We're to get into the fifty three man roster. So today, we're going to make some projections I did a roster projection heading into training camp was on July twenty seven I had Jalen Hurd making the team I had Sean Coleman making the team. I had a few other players that they're just not going to make the team for whatever reason. So we're going to do that again today after trying to cap after all the news after everything we've seen and read and it will let's just compare to see what's changed since. So start with the first things first quarterback, Jimmy, Garoppolo, nick, mullins, CJ, Beathard I think they all make the roster I. Don't think that that's going to be very you know very controversial. It should be. I mean yeah. I I. Agree I all three of them making the roster as well. Especially, this season with Cova did I imagine that most teams will try to carry three quarterbacks if they can especially just given you know you never know. What happens if Garoppolo or mullins or you know they were to test positive or whatever the case is right and they were mistime than having Beth who understands the system? He's not great by any means just having them in the building is going to be advantage. Advantageous this season. I made this comment to someone else earlier Beth. `Red to George Kettle is Kinda of like you know James Jones or Mike Miller was. and. Lebron he's like teams back in the day. He used to have like those guys like travel with him. I think CJ beathard and George kind of like that George must have somewhere in his contract that Caesar method must be on the roster wherever he is. Those our buddy buddy but jokes, apart I I think all three of them will will make the team. So that's funny. You say that because Caitlin Beth one throwing to kill this off season for the most part it wasn't. Garoppolo. So maybe there is this weird clause in the contract right? I mean I feel like I could make a stronger argument where you carry two quarterbacks as opposed to three just playing the odds last year I can understand it as you know Garoppolo is coming off an injury. So you want to just protect your quarterback you WanNa make sure that you know united last minute fishing for a quarterback but you know he's out there he looks comfortable. No knee brace. In just in this situation I just can't understand a situation where. What are the odds that your third quarterback plays a snap in the regular season game just play the is I imagine that's less than ten percent very, very low at imagine. Right if we're going to do that, yet are the likelihood of a quarterback testing positive for having that whole situation happened shared night. There's a possibility that can happen without. It'd be a risk that I'd be willing to take, and I would much rather have you know a position player as opposed to you know a third string quarterback that major. May Not like the is that he throws a pass on likely and he's not going to help you in special teams or anything but that's I mean that's a Shanahan's ways and I don't see that changing I. Wonder if that will change you know this year with mullins and method both moans is a restricted free agent, right? Yeah. MULLENS will be back. He's restricted free agent. CJ BEATHARD is directed So hopefully, this is the last we've seen of method. CONHAM. I. Hope they don't some deal but Yeah it's tough. Especially, you know when you're having. Debates over other positions trying to like squeeze some other guy and you've got who's affected taking roster spot and like you mentioned, what are the odds that he plays right? but just given. Kyle and where they draft method and what they're trying to do I think they're gonNA, they're gonNA keep him on the roster rather than just swallow their pride and cut him. So both said before the pod before we hit record, this is what we think is going to happen not necessarily what we would do if you were in charge fifty, three man roster so.
Marty Smith's Analysis: Does Alabama's Crimson Tide have any real competition?
"Alabama crimson tide mardi like, ooh. Yeah. Nobody's honest to God. We've been talking about this around here their second team led by Jalen hurts is that is that the best competition that they would have if they played in the national championship game against their second team with Jalen Hurd. No, no Clinton's good, man. Not only is Clinton good. They're really starting to figure it out. Trevor Lawrence is he's a bona fide scholar now at quarterback their defenses elite. They look very complete to me now and only in the last couple of weeks have they look back complete. Notre Dame looked very good. The other night. I was here Yankee Stadium. But at this point, I still believe it's Alabama everybody else from a lot of different perspectives. Their death is unbelievable. To he's going to run away with the Heisman Trophy and their physicality. So I think that I think that Alabama. If they don't show up unprepared, which I don't expect and they don't suffer some sort of catastrophic injury. I think I think they're going to win it in convincingly. But Clinton is good guys.
