"Forty nine we got a lot of news on tuesday. unfortunately not much of it was good. Let's start with the biggest news of the day. And that is an update on the health of safety jakubowski tart. Well let me just let kyle shanahan tell you not moving very fast right now. He hasn't been out there. And we miss the time with You know. I don't know how long it's gonna stay on pop but i don't seem come back soon right now when kyle shanahan says they thought he would be back and he's still not back yet. That is not a good sign for juice. Whiskey tart or the forty niners defense tart has missed twenty eight games over the last four seasons so this isn't exactly a surprise but you would have hoped that the turf toe would cleared up by now. Tony jefferson fellow. Safety is also dealing with a groin and hamstring injury. Which leaves jimmy ward. Tapan wilson talanoa who fonda and jared maiden as the top safeties on the roster more on that later more in this bad news dump things are not looking good for wide receiver. Jalen hurd he missed practice on tuesday and well to hear kyle shanahan tell it. That is not exactly boosting his chances of making the team. I mean hurts it. And i know he's battling back from a serious injury And we know the potentially has in the upside on how much we think he can help us. But he's got a show that and you know there's not a lot of time left but hopefully you can get in a groove where he has a chance to go out there and play some football and give himself a chance to make this team so far this year hurt his caught exactly one pass in eleven on eleven drills and this is now year three that he is in without ever having played a regular season. Snap for the team. The odds of jalen hurd making squad. Right now are looking like slim to none. In terms of the actual practice yesterday was one of the most physical days of camp. There were multiple training. Camp fights between offensive lineman lake and tomlinson and defensive lineman kevin givens. They scuffled twice at practice during the second fight. Alex mack playfully pulled. Nick bosa away from the scrum. That's a veteran. Move right there in other news kyle. Shanahan was asked which of his quarterbacks will play. And how much this weekend. And the usually honest head coach didn't have much to say i'm untold any of the players yet so tell them and then i'll tell you as soon as i do which i probably won't for a couple of days i would expect how shanahan's going to be asked that question a lot between now and saturday. We always give you something to read something to watch and something. You might have missed something to read on this wednesday. Espn has a column about which teams are most likely to go from worst to first this season of course as you might expect the forty niners are on it but are they the best bet to win their division the year after being in the basement after read it to find out something to watch kyle shanahan said. The team was a little light in the safety department. And they're trying to remedy that ha ha clinton dix clayton gathers bradley macdougald. An andrew. syndey. Deo are all working out for the team according to espn field. Yates something you might have missed remember earlier this week when we heard kyle shanahan get asked about alex mack swamp ass. If you thought it couldn't get any weirder you were wrong. Here's jimmy garoppolo. If definitely makes difficult. If you're not ready for it i would say i think i've learned my career how to deal with it but that's the best way i can describe as you're playing in a dry game.

"Don't expect to see in team drills during the first week of training camp caution and said they're going to be eased in but that's a big deal because especially with ford. John lynch said general manager. John lynch of course. He said that the team has taken a cautiously optimistic approach and they feel like they kind of have his injury figured out. He's been around the team. He's been in you know working out. And then as far as nick boza. He actually met burroughs from the athletic reporter that he's actually gotten faster in some of his testing and then with jalen hurd no. It's just been i imagine. He's been in bubble. Wrap this all the time and other gonna you know. Put him out there when he's ready kind of easing men as well but those three have a chance to contribute wide receiver. Three for four or heard d- ford even if he doesn't start that's going to be the pass rusher on obvious passing nouns. And then that nick bosa guy who's probably going to be the best player on the team in one of the best buyers. Nfl getting him back won't hurt either. So always your take away from the news on those three. Finally positive injury news for this team. I'll start with the ford. I think everyone expects that. Whatever he doesn't field it's gonna be found money 'cause you didn't Deformity even return to the team. A lot of people thought he would step away or be released Just because his contract with the rework that he's back for the season and passes fiscal which is huge. And i think they're gonna keep his workload light during the training camp process and make sure he just ready to go for the season he's gonna be on the colli leonard Load management plans and probably for the season you know Being really fresh hoping for the end of the season and seeing what he can contribute on the field then moved to jalen hurd. Obviously as we know there's competition and the third wide receiver spot jalen hurd former thorughout pick. Can he really step up and be the big slot wide. Receiver that caution in looking for george. Biddle was asked if you know he would be open. If if jalen hurd removed to be a tight end and that could be kind of interesting. I think jalen is big chess piece in this offense game. Just stay healthy and on the field massive And then the last guy.

"Puts more talent around Jalen Hurd Tenacious. I want to know why the Miami heat with Jimmy Butler bam out of by you. I want to know why, when you know and all the depot to the mixed If the Nets aren't fully on point. Why can't the Miami heat beat them in a seven game series? The problem is what Victor Oladipo, are you getting They're Tiki and Tierney. Remember what up tickets here to hear CBS sports radio taking and charity show coming from Our studios, The rocket mortgage studio, want to see your loan options, just payments and closing cost online in real time rocket can so we got some baseball going on which is awesome. And baseball's the friend that You just, You know, You don't realize how much you missed the friend until you get to see the friend again. That really that's what it comes down to for me every year, especially the kids now. Fall deeper and deeper in love with baseball. No, that that sounds odd because it was my first love. And then you know, quite frankly, like after college. I wish I was all I was just so injured and just I don't want that was done with the game. But You know, I was like, OK, I've got to throw some energies into into some other sports. Here I was. Baseball doubt certainly is a player. I just had nothing else to grind A. The levers and gears were shot and, you know, obviously got in the business at that point, and football is the monster, and I've always been a huge, huge hoop Spanish. You know, both NBA in college, and obviously you start to play a little bit of golf back then and talking about the majors and all you know, baseball does not get normal that ever. I understand this. Will never really get Much of the if any, really day to day of the baseball pie on a national level. It is a regional sport and is it it is a great regional sport, but boy Now that these guys are back on my screen just once. Every once again, you know, reaffirmed its the best. It's just there. It's kind of lazy. It doesn't have to be. You have to be sitting on the couch like 39. Let's go. Gotta get stopped. Gonna stop. No penalty. No like it's it's such a different energy. I love it. I'm so pumped that baseball's back, man, It's a passing. It's a passive watch. That's your You're right about that. So it makes it easy to kind of just chill and watch as opposed to be fully engaged in what you can't watch a football game. Not be watching and still understand what's going on there. Well, you guess you could miss a couple pitches here there. Whatever it may be. Ultimately you can figure out what's going on. But I'll tell you this. The energy in the playoffs is to me, depending upon what type of football game it is. Is comparable because of you are in and every baseball fan was that a team in a one run October game in the last 10 years or so, you I believe you're probably not your head in agreement with me on this when you are Either up by a run and you're on the mound. I mean, every pitch every single. There's no breathing room. Throw the pitch. Get the ball back Reset. Do it again. Throw the pitch, Get the ball back, reset to get football. While the levels the plateaus of the arcs of energy, probably or could be higher. I feel like what I watch what it's my team. When it's the Yankees in October. I feel like I never take my my heart off the emotional meter, where, at least during the big football game, I think I can exhale Mauritz, and that's odd for a sport that it's supposed to juxtapose juxtaposed the other way, But it actually doesn't work that way for me with baseball in October, October, Yeah, that's what I told his doctor over its right. No, you're in. May you know? Yeah. You probably you may be right about that. Even though in the NFL any football at any moment, there could be a huge play. It ain't staying with baseball. Any pitcher go over the fence. Yeah, but it's a run. Yes. If you down six runs, I hear you. Yeah, that's true. NFL. You get a pick six that changes the complexion of the game. The fumble? No, I I get it. But October baseball, you're right. There's nothing like it. Every pitch. All right, So listen, I I don't know how else to interpret these words. Let me play something from Robert Kraft, The owner of the Patriots is we know Bill Belichick's been running the show, both on the field visibly and behind the scenes for a while. Well, Scott pew all these last years a gym there. Oh, eight or oh, seven. No, no, it was away. Okay, so without a conventional GM for well over a decade, and they have with on a lot, especially offensive picks, especially the water, Seaver spot and Robert Craft waiting on some of those Mrs Pertaining to the draft here is the owner for the Pats. Really The teams who draft well are the ones who will be consistently good. I don't feel we've done the greatest job the last few years and I really hope and I believe I've seen a different approach this year. And you know, in the end, it all comes out What happens on the field of how well people execute Question for you. That's pretty much self explanatory, but what he says. I've seen it play out differently. What does he mean? The way they're scouting? That was a that was the most interesting part of the equation. Honestly, it sounds like he's talking about the free agency more than he is the draft and, you know, maybe what he's alluding to Is because they haven't done a good job with scouting and drafting bit's the fact right surprisingly, especially given what Robert Kraft has said and I agree with him. That the best way to stay consistently good is to draft well, is that they? They've been consistently great, and they haven't drafted well, which is a testament to the coaching staff. And I guess you know the role players and the leaders in the locker room and in the coaching staff on that team over the last decade or so, but to me what it sounds like listening to Robert Kraft just said there is We understand that maybe we are inferior at this part of the preseason of the NFL that is scouting and drafting. That's why we had license this year or Bill Belichick had license this year to go spend the King's ransom, filling the roster with proven veterans and free agency, which we talked about this from the very jump. Free agency. They patriots or just active all over the place, offense and defense. And maybe it's because they recognize they don't draft well. They've missed. They swung and missed too many times in the draft. She I don't think that that's it at all. I just think it's an acknowledgment that we weren't very good last year, and we want to be much better this year. So you know, let's play a couple of hands here and maybe we'll win. One of them will certainly draft like we always do. But let's at least fortify the roster by Spending a check with a farm or known commodity somebody that's got tape at this level where there's less of a projection where there's a real familiarity with their skill set and let you know. Let let's Let's get some free agents in here. Let me play this again. Diesel play that again on just be prepared to stop when I tell you Go ahead, decell. Really The teams who draft well are the ones who will be consistently good. I don't feel we've done the greatest job the last few years and I really hope and I believe I've seen a different approach stuff. Hmm. I think he's talking about drafting. I know. But what about free agent? So what's he talking about? That's why I asked you. Is it a different Wait. There's more dialogue in the building doom or people have voices. Is that Mork Communal inputted? What maybe was just bell the check. I don't. I don't know, Just a lot of sounds like he's seeing things different pertaining to how they're getting ready. A lot of their draft board. I'm looking at their draft from last year. Okay, it's called Duggar. Um Joshua J Line backroom Anfernee Jennings. He was a linebacker..

Final 53-man roster projections for all 32 NFL teams

"We're to get into the fifty three man roster. So today, we're going to make some projections I did a roster projection heading into training camp was on July twenty seven I had Jalen Hurd making the team I had Sean Coleman making the team. I had a few other players that they're just not going to make the team for whatever reason. So we're going to do that again today after trying to cap after all the news after everything we've seen and read and it will let's just compare to see what's changed since. So start with the first things first quarterback, Jimmy, Garoppolo, nick, mullins, CJ, Beathard I think they all make the roster I. Don't think that that's going to be very you know very controversial. It should be. I mean yeah. I I. Agree I all three of them making the roster as well. Especially, this season with Cova did I imagine that most teams will try to carry three quarterbacks if they can especially just given you know you never know. What happens if Garoppolo or mullins or you know they were to test positive or whatever the case is right and they were mistime than having Beth who understands the system? He's not great by any means just having them in the building is going to be advantage. Advantageous this season. I made this comment to someone else earlier Beth. `Red to George Kettle is Kinda of like you know James Jones or Mike Miller was. and. Lebron he's like teams back in the day. He used to have like those guys like travel with him. I think CJ beathard and George kind of like that George must have somewhere in his contract that Caesar method must be on the roster wherever he is. Those our buddy buddy but jokes, apart I I think all three of them will will make the team. So that's funny. You say that because Caitlin Beth one throwing to kill this off season for the most part it wasn't. Garoppolo. So maybe there is this weird clause in the contract right? I mean I feel like I could make a stronger argument where you carry two quarterbacks as opposed to three just playing the odds last year I can understand it as you know Garoppolo is coming off an injury. So you want to just protect your quarterback you WanNa make sure that you know united last minute fishing for a quarterback but you know he's out there he looks comfortable. No knee brace. In just in this situation I just can't understand a situation where. What are the odds that your third quarterback plays a snap in the regular season game just play the is I imagine that's less than ten percent very, very low at imagine. Right if we're going to do that, yet are the likelihood of a quarterback testing positive for having that whole situation happened shared night. There's a possibility that can happen without. It'd be a risk that I'd be willing to take, and I would much rather have you know a position player as opposed to you know a third string quarterback that major. May Not like the is that he throws a pass on likely and he's not going to help you in special teams or anything but that's I mean that's a Shanahan's ways and I don't see that changing I. Wonder if that will change you know this year with mullins and method both moans is a restricted free agent, right? Yeah. MULLENS will be back. He's restricted free agent. CJ BEATHARD is directed So hopefully, this is the last we've seen of method. CONHAM. I. Hope they don't some deal but Yeah it's tough. Especially, you know when you're having. Debates over other positions trying to like squeeze some other guy and you've got who's affected taking roster spot and like you mentioned, what are the odds that he plays right? but just given. Kyle and where they draft method and what they're trying to do I think they're gonNA, they're gonNA keep him on the roster rather than just swallow their pride and cut him. So both said before the pod before we hit record, this is what we think is going to happen not necessarily what we would do if you were in charge fifty, three man roster so.

Caitlin Beth Garoppolo Mullins George Kettle Cj Beathard Lebron Jalen Hurd Kyle Mullens Sean Coleman Cova First Things First Shanahan Mike Miller Caesar James Jones Jimmy Nick

"Next having George Kendall be and just block his block as bud off right I mean he's the best blocking Titan. He's the best receding Titan he's the Guy Right then maybe having guys step up. Charlie Warner. Roosevelt. Step up right. So that's your tight end group. You're you're running back group is probably. Pretty Stout. Right. You've Mckinnon now who I mean we don't know what he is but I. You know if we look at what he's been, he's really good. He come in and do stuff right away and we have breaking most who we just gave another extension to just gave him more money. You know I think they just gave him more money on the accenture gave him but you know they spent more money there the wide receiving core there is really no money it's all young guys and so stepping up. I think that's honestly if we're looking at anything coming into these next couple of weeks, it seemed guys step up and the pumice with no preseason games. So. It's all going to be hearsay. Because I'm not at the practices I don't know if you're at the practice is rob I'm in Connecticut Yeah, see? Exactly. That was my None of us are going to eat these practices to really see what's going on so. Week one at home against Arizona's going to be what we see what happens and it's going to be all speculation into that point and that's the that's the biggest problem that is the maybe. And we don't really know for sure but that could be the saving grace for this team because if you look at the early schedule, it's not. The gauntlet that we saw last year at times they start with Arizona, and then they play the to New York teams in. New York back to back the jets and the giants so. That's a star where they can maybe work through some of the problems sorta like we saw last year early in the season they were not the same team that they were in. December. When they blew up Cincinnati and that buccaneers game was very close and they played Cincinnati and they blew him out and then that Pittsburgh game what they the ball five times and still won it was a very much. It was very much a different schedule. Excuse me last year than it was A. Event is this year I. mean the jets and the giants are terrible like you can't tell me that those teams are GonNa come in and have any chance against a team that was in the Super Bowl. I. Just don't see it and then you play the eagles on Sunday night football. That's your first real test. Yes. But the one thing you said that Kinda you know closing out on this, the Arizona cardinals aren't anything to scoff about I. Don't think I really don't think that they're going to be an easy win that first week they did give the forty niners a game both times last season that offense I think is. Just. A bad match up for the forty niners defense. but I don't think cliff. Kingsbury knows a damn thing about defense like at all I. Really don't their defense is awful and it's going to be awful again this year because I still think there are a year away on defense, but we can't forget I think people love Niner fans are forgiving De'andre Hopkins is one of the best receivers in this league and he has a guy at quarterback who not only is faster than Russell. Wilson put is is younger and I mean he has upside but we know who wasn't as he's one of the best quarterbacks in the League we know we're dealing with I. Think we still don't know what Kylie. Marie is all the way yet. No, he's awesome. I. Think he's going to be a huge problem in the NFC west for a long time to come, but he doesn't play defense. So as much as the cardinals score I, think the forty niners are going to be able to score just as much because I think Shanahan's going to just go up and down the field on them and you know maybe they'll all be shootouts and and I guess you could say anything that happens. But I as much as they gave the forty niners trouble last season I don't see the forty niners losing with extra time to prepare week one against Arizona at home. Oh Yeah I don't see them. No. I don't see them losing the first five or six games. You don't see them losing ever. Not those losses on the schedule do that to me what's the first loss on the schedule? Okay. Secondly schedule. The Saints November Fifteenth I picked it the first loss they suffer I. Think the Eagles game is the closest thing they come to loss although with the Patriots, I, don't know. The. Patriots are kind of a wild card that could be a loss I don't think they're going to lose to Seattle I. Just don't think they're these this team that is going to be the legion of boom two point like a lot of the seahawks fans are saying right now but I don't know there's just so many unknowns right now because we get no preseason games at, it's the most annoying thing in the world like we would have had one already we should have had one last week. Yeah. Go back and forth right because my first thought was no preseason games. Awesome. Nobody's GonNa get hurt. woops. Yeah, YOU'RE GONNA get hurt because that's a training camp is and so the thing is like without me preseason games, the fans don't really get a chance to see. You. Know the actual. Present Super Vanilla but it it's better than watching the niners videos or the niners be biden's videos they're posting on twitter. Yeah. It's definitely going to be a season like no other. I certainly don't mind going into Seattle and into New Orleans when the stadium is going to be maybe twenty five percent full if that. Oh, yeah. Exactly and that's the thing is, is the New Orleans game was really scary when I saw it on the schedule and then Kobe happened or like you know you sort of realize that Kobe was gonna be a thing and there wasn't going to be fans in the stands and you're like, okay, we'll. New. Isn't, GonNa be very loud and we're better than that saints team like I don't think the niners are worse than that saints team at all. I. Mean. They proved it last year they were better. I have right now. I. Have San Francisco repeating the thirteen and three. In the three, the three losses are. Seattle Arizona. That's like the Atlanta game from last year. Okay. Just there's something about that Arizona team man I don't know what it is. They just scared me more than the Seok Sti sometimes and then the third one. Only because it's new England and weird stuff happens the New England. Patriots You know if they didn't get cam, I would say, I think the niners would win but I'm fascinated fascinated to see how bella check attacks Shanahan's offense and look if cameras healthy. He's really good. Not just like good like Amy's MVP level. Good. So we'll have to wait and see on that but I could be your I. Agree. Match up. You know what else I think is sneaky tough match-up week thirteen Monday night football on ESPN. Buffalo Sean. McDermott is a good coach. You realize he's gotten to the playoffs multiple years with the bills know what he does that mom. was like the last guy to do that and McDermott's there and he's a really good coach. They just locked him up. They got Stefan digs on offense a big at anything Josh Allen the bills are going to be a really just a pain. Give you all. You can handle every week. Yeah. I think that that is totally a chance to be lost just like I think that saints game as a chance I don't think remains a threat at all this team is going to be in it. No matter what I think. You know we're gonNA podcast and talk every week about problems the team having the receiving core they're going to be in every game that's a sham. That's what Shanahan is brought, and that's what this defense allows them to be. This defense is so good. Whether or not they take a step back there. So talented with Bosa Armstead Kinloch I..

"Of them on a kind of route for route basis right like had some good plays for sure like had routes where they were able to get some separation like be able to win even if the ball wasn't coming their way and had some plays where the ball did come their way right where they were able to make positive things happened but it definitely wasn't the kind of consistency i think you would like like to see. I think that's what kind of shanahan's comments alluded to after the game was right like whoa. I'm just not seeing it all the time. I get flashes from these guys on some place but it's just just not there at the consistency level that i really wanna see it at and that was kind of you know my takeaway as well coming out of this. I think you saw each guy. <hes> deebo probably probably had i think the most positive game to me i would say that to me did have the most positive but both in terms of the way the way he was able to catch that that kind of underthrown ball from from c._j. Beathard but also based on his ability on that end around. I think he's a really really strong runner and i think he showed a little bit of that on that end around he had a lot of open space but <hes> he did show a little bit of that and i think that his route running still looked really really refiners compared to even someone like jalen hurd because on that on that deep route for example where he catches the bathroom c._j. They're they're actually running mirrored concepts on either side. It's a stop go. Jalen herders running the stop and go on one side and depots running on the side. We're ultimately he makes a reception and you can just see subtle differences in the way they run the route and while deebo does get the benefit of having i think should your corner on or at least a corner. That's ed terrible mistake awhan bro gotta offhand ultimately. He ends up just running clean around. You can see some of the differences there yeah <hes> gets <hes> gets a ton of separation on there like i mean winds at the line of scrimmage. Even despite i mean part of the reason <hes> you know obviously the the corner does make a terrible decision he re dr is jammed the wrong hand and we jane with the wrong hand. You miss it that leaves you unable to recover essentially and so which leads your which one's your offhand for the uninitiated associated so it's going to be the opposite hand from the one from where the receiver releases so here depots releasing to outside so you wanna shoot as a corner. You're inside hand because that way when i'm opening i'm opening with the receiver and i'm getting my inside hand on him and i can kinda ride him directly going if he goes outside and shoot <music> outside handle that's turning my body position inside and if i miss it's over because now you're you're literally cycle. You've you have no way of of quickly recovering from that position so you always want to go with the opposite hand the receiver releases so that you can mir the receiver that direction and kind of stay on top of him and so yeah you get that part of the reason he does look so stupid is because you know give obviously a little credit to depot there as well for release really gets the last i spit like just as the corner thinks he's screwed in like trying to play catch up you get the little stop like that makes the corner like almost completely. Stop thinking he got a break. He was then yeah. It was great and then you leave it. There and i think that was also a play to that was nice to see from depot because that wasn't a type of throw or catch that you see him. Make a lot in college right. He wasn't a guy that was necessarily a big downfield especially like contested catch type guy and that was the rap that people had on him coming out of of south carolina's. Everyone's saying okay he's. He's a slot guy. He's basically running back playing wide receiver you should throw him in the slot and that's that and when we did the kind of preseason yvonne alan..

"Step. A separation man covered their plan so if this is a good ball that allows him to catch this stride. There's some chance for some pretty big. Check on that play because there's not a lot of guys on the defense that are kind of closing in able to help and make that tackle right away so but the ball ends up being a little bit low down by his knees and takes him to the ground so he has throws like that and i think the other area that you would notice like accuracy that isn't exactly where you want it and this was something that absolutely showed up with him last year is he does struggle a bit on the move just just for whatever reason is far more comfortable when he can be stationary stationary in the pocket definitely doesn't have that same level of like touching it just tends to leave balls kind of behind or just again like on on the outside edges of the catch radius for for the receivers on the accurate adjacent exactly exactly so i think yeah that was <hes> kind of the most encouraging thing overall though from him compared to third and then and then you saw them both kind of had a play that wasn't so great that kind of stuck cows well. Let's talk about the interceptions for a little bit because i think after the game you look at shanahan's post-game comments and he was pretty explicit. They were both bad interceptions and then it seems like ah on mayo goes pod that listened to today. Maiocco said that he kind of put the c._j. Beathard one a little bit more on jalen hurd and kind of walk that when a little bit back but when you look at their interceptions perceptions i think they are they both had some elements where it was like yeah. I can understand why he threw the ball and also man that sucks that it was a that was an interception because you look at mullins interception option and you've got to laugh in the formation dallas's playing cover three. You've got two of the hook defenders in the middle of the field and one of those hook defenders should really carry that at linebacker the third receiver on the inside all the way up the field and he doesn't and he's able to kind of peel off and get into the area and intercept the ball. If mullins lins holds the ball just a little bit longer and actually throws that tight end he's going to have a pretty begin in front of the safety and that titans not going to be able to recover so not only was it kind of like got. You should've kept the ball a little bit longer and throw it somewhere else but then the decision you do make you kind of can put a penalty on that one right so i think they're they're kind of <hes> an element of of force in like i think you know it's tough to say definitively of course but i think there is an area that he theoretically put that ball right the completion so one it's compounded by the fact that he's getting hit right. He's releasing the ball and so that definitely alters the trajectory. The ball takes any sort of air. Kinda like sends it on a more downward trajectory that goes right to the linebacker so where he would need to put it in order for this avid chance at being successful is kind of more up in a little bit away from where that linebacker that only linebackers dropping to you and so when when the hit comes and it sends that ball down it just take any opportunity that that's going to happen but even if you're just looking at it from a decision like you mentioned. It's still kind of a questionable decision so i i think there was an opportunity for kind of a clear big play within his vision kind of in his i read that he's looking at their if he stays on that for a beat longer in his able to get a better read on the leverage of that linebacker vacher in sees that he's not gonna be in a position to cover this route..

"And you love in in terms of just rob -bility to to make people take false steps and to make people miss or trick them with his movement that just kind of like Braxton Miller even watching him at the senior bowl practices. People. Get impressed with kind of that playground movement where you're trying to get a defender to move with a lot of lateral side to side movement. That's a waste of movement. You know, you want us you want to always be attacking downhill and even with your movement at sets up you're moving downhill while you're doing it. And I thought that any Isabella got little overrated due to do on data production as opposed to. How he got that production in big games? And so when I see I see that he could be fit in cliff Kingsbury offense as a slot player. But it's one of those deals where there's four different. There's four guys who can play the slot that they pretty much have on that team. Now FitzGerald is a guy who's evolved into more of a slot option as as he's aged on curious to see they're gonna stick him back out as a flanker split in the Kim Butler can act who I really loved could be could actually play in the slot as a big slot role. Christian Kirk was drafted last year who's ideally more of a slot player. So, you know, the the fact that they they've got maybe one guy who can who can obviously very good at multiple positions in FitzGerald and with Butler as Butler grows. You still have a situation where I don't see a guy like Isabela being used outside a ton unless it's just specific plays where they motioned him pre snap. And they know he's not gonna. Get pressed 'cause he struggled in my opinion against press coverage in on tape and the injuries where it was it was a lot of wasted movement. And when he got you know, rerouted or played physically he got distracted, and you could see him get distracted with the ball arriving on time and him not being able to make the play. Jalen Hurd is a guy who I really find intriguing the former five star running back at Tennessee. But he, you know, I thought he really turned himself into a fine receiver prospect in terms of his footwork quickness billeted drop and drive and he catches the ball pretty well. And he's he starts off. Moore's a big slot at Baylor. But you can see that potential for him to be split end or even a flanker. And they use them as a running back still on. I think whole that work is a receiver actually made his footwork better as a runner, and he was a lot cleaner and quicker and more precise with his footwork from being able to. To pick in slide to open creases in be patient. But they kind of say while he's kind of a receiver, and that we're talking is he gonna play more running back is gonna be a wing an H back type of player in line tight end possibly and the the way they define that could be a good thing in terms of the use it well enough. But if he just turns into a pure gadget, I we joked the gadgets get lost in the inbetween couch cushions in the NFL. And and to me very few teams. Do a great job of making the best use of players don't have a position. And I'm a little worried that you know, in San Francisco, if they've already have some of their receiving receiver d'etre pretty well defined that I fear that a guy like heard who could be very good as a wide receiver might get lost as a as a gadget in that mix. That's interesting and anybody else that jumps out to you on the negative part. Yeah. I mean, I think that they're more later guys. You know, this is a class where it's interesting because some of the talents who are who are most fascinating might be some of the running backs who are later on dick later on in this track. I think Trayvon Williams endeavoured single territory guys..

"That's good, man. Yeah. You have to have a personality. You can't just be a robot. And I think he's definitely not a robot. That's. Yeah. I was gonna say like I'm going to be seeing him in log room, and I don't want. I want to be able to joke around with him afterwards. If he made a play or whatever it may be let's get. Yeah. You got some jokes to one he might go. Some low blows, you know, real quiet and try to act quiet. But he he's got he's got some character. I'm all here for the jokes. I like to hear that. That's good. Well, you go get it from. All right. Not at first. But eventually, they'll come. I've been so we talked about yet saw his personality. So about you've worked with plenty of receivers. Do you have like a comparison for who? Does he remind you of? That was tough. I had a bunch of people during this whole draft process for him asked me that question. You know, he's different from all the guys that I've had are poach forty Dave's. But the titans, and you know brush guys who went on a plane, the NFL, you know, just with his size. And you know, it's his ability able to you don't just use that size to catch the football. You know, he's totally different in a lot of guys. I hit just because he had played position for awhile. Right. And so it's hard to make the comparison of especially the guys that I've cokes, but he reminds me of, you know, Kwame older as far as his size, and you know, just how aggressive he is. And just how he loves football. And that's about the only comparison I've kinda used with with Linda's of action, and I've I'm of diehard Florida state fan. So you tell me that say, no more. That's all I need to hear man. We're getting player if that's the case where on your, no doubt. Bolden was dog overplayed yet. Yeah. Yeah. Yet some fighting him for sure I mean, forty Niners fans know that he was here for. Couple of seasons in all year. He was tough, and he caught the football. And you didn't matter how fast he was. You knew he was gonna find a way to get open and catch the football. That's another guy that. Yeah. Like, you mentioned he's not he wasn't a burner..

"He he couldn't figure out whether he wanted to, you know, use head fakes to get around them or just gonna run through being bigger when with the guy, so yeah, that's something that I'll be keeping an eye on for sure. Especially if he's going to be playing over the middle of Phil. Yeah. You'll get better at those things. I mean, you you, you know, you got only so much that you can improve on that stuff especially in the college game. Just because you don't class restraints and ours was restraints and stuff like that. But I know it's our restraints there in the NFL, but you don't football more than you know, you worrying about right or chemist protests. Yeah. You don't you'll you'll have a chance to improve. And and like I said he's around some great coaches that little speed that process up on. Yeah. Absolutely. And now now that it's his job there. And now that he'll be able to do this every day and see what he's doing everyday review those practice a review his praxis before and afterwards. It'll be I imagine. It'll just be a lot different. So yeah, that's a good point as well. So hurt went in. In the third round. Do you think that was good spot? Former where where did you guys think that he was going to go? Well, you know, I thought he may have been you know, we probably could have been a late second early third round pick went where he ended up going. So I think that was spot form. I mean before God it just plays position for one season. I mean, you you got drafted the punch guys playing the position their entire lives in. I think that's a credit to him showing that you know, he has some ability to be able to do that. But you know, I thought they'd been a, you know, a second round pick to to early third and he ended up right there at that spot. Yeah. And we're talking to you like you mentioned his ceiling helps them a lot. It just natural ability helps on the lie. But he puts them really did things on tape for a first year player for first year receiver. So yeah, I think that third round just ride around that area. And then I mean, just go into the forty Niners helps a lot with who's calling plays all year. No question when when when an offense of. Guy like that. When office got Shanahan takes his chance on you early in the third round. Where teams are still looking for starters. I think that speaks a lot about you know, what heard can be no question. You know, those guys know what they're doing. Let them around football time, Colin and John. And so, you know, just trust the evaluation, and and I think done a great job by getting a great player like him. So you mentioned he's like a straight up serious guys that how he is all the time when he's on the field. How is he like I mean, he's competitive as heck man. And that's something about our program. You know have been here at Baylor. I mean, we're we talked about competing and competition. And he's he's he's the faith of that. And he's going to compete, and you know, he'll go have some fun and beating her own E. He'll joke around he'll laugh and have the time. But he understands that. But William between those white lines about this. They're saying if you take care of business, I you know, is a lot more fun. You can have a lot more fun. So he's business. I and have fun second. And that should give them a chance to have a pretty productive career..

"But just hearing that being able to a guy taking accountability as sounds like that's that's when you know, you have somebody that is this is going to skew their all and just be legit. So that's good to hear. So so he played pretty much primarily slot for you guys. And you know, obviously carried the ball a little bit as well. So that be versatility. How is there? Do you think that he can be outside receiver down the line? I mean, he can speak up outside receivers sore. What of John said about? About him. You know, he can line up, and he can lined up outside economic inside. He can lot of position tailback. I think he has so much position flexibility that you can put him anywhere. We have them inside because it was adding teachers for us and for him. I mean, he's going against a, you know, a nipple corner, which you ain't gonna see nickel corner. A college. The way you go see a nickel corner the NFL. Also, he was bigger than most guys was quick animals guys. He was bigger than the moat. So he was able to use his size to our advantage in we had an outside a little bit. But not as much as we used them inside. Just because of you know, we were able to take advantage of that situation in just speaking of playing inside in the NFL, it's he's he's still probably going to be quicker and bigger than a lot of the guys that he sees the Nichols. Well, so that'll be that'll be interesting to see what is role is just as far as how how they use him as far as jet sweeps and just quick out. So just stretching the field down just being a seemed threat as well. Because one thing that caught me off guard just watching him because you know, he gets his labeled as a raw talent just because he's played the play the position one year. But I thought he catches the ball really well away from his body for a guy that just hasn't played the position, and he just looks really comfortable. So is that is that something you guys worked on? Yeah. Well, you're on the God is going to catch the ball. All these won't catch a hundred balls after practice going to kick him off the field. And when people see they've on a think that you know, he's trying to you know, it's it's new or he's trying to impress people. But that's just how he goes to work. I mean, it was times I hit like our Jalen caught enough balls man you caught enough like all, but he has natural hands. I noticed that the first time I was able to work with him that he caught the ball naturally. He wasn't never fighting the ball or balls beating them up or anything like that ES natural hands. And he's going to he's going to extend his hands away from the body and catch the football, and he can make every single catch that you need to make you think it speaks to just the type of hard worker. He is just being able to catch the ball away from his body. But do so with guys like hanging all around, and he's he's pretty comfortable going up and get it. And he's not bothered by contact. And a lot of guys that have been playing the position all their life. They struggle as soon as somebody's in their hip pocket or just on them. The minutes. Somebody just hits the wrist. It's all she wrote. But that's not that's not a problem with her. No, he's he's a guy that you know, he used his side she'll defenders away and aids aren't you can get a cat that can make you contest the us which is easily that you know, you you've got a pretty special player. And you like you said, it's it's guys played that position for their entire lives that struggle with contested catches and east pretty natural in absolutely so okay. So it's not it's not going to be all sunshine and rainbows with her. Let's not. So he what's what's an area that he has to just improve..

"So this is why he's number three, but he does carry risks because if Pettus breaks out, and now all of a sudden, they've got more with deebo Samuel, and Jalen Hurd, and these guys that are that are not allowing kindled to be up in the hundred and thirty targets then then there's risk their eighty eight receptions last year for thirteen hundred seventy seven yards. Four year college career, forty eight receptions. Yeah. Well, he went Swannee receptions in his junior year twenty two and his senior year. So I'm looking at fantasy full just makes me laugh, all caq calculator. But right now Zakar is the to twelve and George Kittle is the three o five are you willing to pay the price for either of those guys if that ADP were to hold a you just said Kelsey is no irks is the to twelve George Kittle is the three o five. I think I would pay up for. I would I you know, the truth is what you're sacrificing their. I if wears Kelsey two oh five. The target that would that would be the that would walk us. We we all agree on Travis Kelsey. That's why. If you said one twelfth though, you know, there there've been years in the past gronk has been a first round. I was like, hey, you guys want a Snickers bar you want. This broccoli. That's why I didn't put the Snickers bar. I it was a time though, this offseason and is before the tyreek south happened. But it just looked like on paper like Kelsey was going so high and kiddos going so low that kid who was the obvious pit to me. I don't feel that way anymore. Right. You got around difference. So. Let's go to number four on our early tight endless OJ Howard out of Tampa Bay. I haven't six Jason. You got him up before Mike at five. OJ Howard needs to stay on the field. If OJ Howard stays on the field. He's too talented to not produce. I think that's what we can all agree on he's earned before. Overall tight end last year finished at thirteen. But he was the fourth most consistent last year when he was actually on the field. So has to take a step forward. We know Cameron brakes in the rear view mirror. Bruce Arians, hasn't traditionally us tight ends. But again, I still go with the two talented rule. All right. Yeah. I mean, that's that's my thing is whatever Bruce Arians wants to do. And he's going to put a better offense in place. Jameis Winston uses tight ends. Jameis Winston will look for his titans. Running down the field. There's no way they're not gonna use OJ Howard and capitalize on the gifts that he has if that's the case and he plays sixteen. I mean, you just said it he he was one of the most consistent tight ends when he was playing fee stays healthy. I don't see how I mean. Right now, I've got him. Mm down for only eighty six targets total. And we've been talking about comparing that to these guys who were up at one hundred thirty plus targets and this is coming out as my tight end four because I think his red zone opportunity. His ability like kill to just break away on an eighty yard run. Not every tight end can do that OJ Howard has done multiple times and will continue to do it. So when you when you have those big massive games. You also have a tight end coming into what is his third year in the league. That's usually how long it takes a tight into really come into their own at least. So his his pace last year in games. Played seventy seven targets fifty four receptions nine hundred four yards eight touchdowns. That's great for as I in in this landscape. Yeah. I mean, I think and then you have real opportunity there. They didn't spend up in the draft to go get another wide receiver option. You lost Humphries? Yeah. You lost de Jack's. He's going to be used, and you know, coming out of college. If you if you remember if. You've been with us for the last three plus years when he was a rookie. This was a generational talent. OJ Howard was like okay since gronk. He was you know, we we've talked a lot about teacher Hawkins sin and Noah fan this year to really good prospects..

"Ways. Carpool would lock and Wiley marks is back with us. Let's move to San Francisco where new report claims there is friction building between the forty Niners codes cow Shanahan and general manager John Lynch with the two not on the same page about the direction of the franchise after a disappointing first two seasons. Together. Shane have reportedly wants his own personnel guy to run the draft and free agency. The when asked about the report the coach called quote, complete b s listen Bleacher report, I think had this report. I think there's truth on both sides. I think at this time of the year NFL draft if there's not friction between the coach and the front office. There's a problem. And so there could be a problem in some friction that doesn't mean they wanted divorce that means it's draft season and they'll get over. But why this report this year when the last two years we've seen them in their media Vail ability after the draft. They both been present. So why this year why does she when you go out there and the draft you get Nick Bosa you get two receivers deebo Samuel versatile. Jalen Hurd, like I don't see where it comes from like everyone's praising the forty nine draft this year and all the moves they made all season. It's a little mind boggling that this report comes right now when it seems like everything's in alignment, we'll having done several games last. You haven't been around. Both those guys known both those guys very well. Part of part of having a great organization is has to be some discourse. There has to be some disagreement. There has to be some argument. I was coached by one of the great office of line coaches ever has koshen Alex gives they were times when we went toe-to-toe face to face cousin each other out. But you know, what we both had the same goal that same vision in mind, sometimes we had different ways of getting there. But we had the same goal and vision in my remember these two guys worked at deal together. Signed contracts that were identical to one another that paid them. Both the same go down the road for six years. And they both knew by the way going down this road. It wasn't a one year fix that. It was such a mess that it was going to take several years. So they knew full well what they were getting into. They may disagree on some of the players. And remember they had they had accolades last year for their drafter two years ago. A Reuben foster is no longer there. Right. And and Solomon Thomas has just not been he's been a tween. He hasn't really been an inside guy. And he hasn't been able to turn a corner from the outside as defensive in. So they've had some issues in some miss in the draft and that will create a little bit attention during this time of the season. I'm with you. This is this is healthy disagreement is healthy. Yeah. But the first station we are hearing is probably organization that's all schedule. Look when your franchise quarterback goes out there and gets hurt throw the clipboard away basically that year. I mean, it's going to be very difficult for this team to go out there and live up. Expectations went Jimmy G was hurt. So this year coming into the season, not say that they don't have disagreements, but for it to become worthy and kind of the loom over his franchise things excessive I think someone in the room saw these guys have a knock down drag out and over a second third or fourth round pick a coach loves a guy scouting department. Does it somebody's gonna win or lose the argument? Somebody's feel is going to be hurt. And then somebody seeing that can misinterpreted or make more of it. Right. Then what it really is. And to get in the moment could cow hand be like F this guy. You know, he wouldn't have had this job without me. We did this. And he and you feel betrayed. I saw dick for meal and call Peterson copies the general manager of the cheese. They got cross ways over Larry Johnson running back out of Penn State Carl Peterson wanted for negotiator. Jerry Tillery is an official. Visit. Aren't even know what to do with my lips. Like, how do I I have no idea how I made this sound in the first place, and I've been trying to replicate it along with the brand starving for days, and she's not possible. Okay. Get really high for this one. Because this is a guy that we both talked about both love red four three at the combine official visit Georgia wide receiver Michael Hartmann. What you give to you? Like, you really going to bring it. You're the one who's got it all these there's like five like you're like just salloway totally off the charts Nevada cast offer you so what do you think of these official visits? I wrote a piece recently, I'm bleeding renascent dot com. Finding like a complementary piece for Jordan Howard, which is like a short term view things, but finding the areas where like we have holes in the in the backfield, which I found to be breaking tackles in space being allusive. And also the the second one being pass catching receiving ability. Durell Henderson who's an official. Visit was one of those guys for me the top guys. Whereas like the Olympics go any other guys on it list. Justice hill is a guy that we mocked the eagles in our last seven around market. Yes. Eighty seven or eighty eight Kistin Sollac, and he was a day three guy that we light. So they're bringing in a lot of running backs. They're also bringing these big wide receiver Jalen Hurd. And then you have Tillery matched with Christian Wilkins was another. Visit like they're really hitting these positions of need pretty hard. Yeah. Now, I find that big slot vibe, very interesting. So it's been jail. Unheard AJ Brown for shore. Did they have to kill Harry or now? Yeah. Nikiel Harry was one right and carry and then I've seen like they've had miekel Hartman in Paris Campbell as well. So obviously some clear like speedy gadget types, which I've long held the belief. I don't know if it's strong enough to be a belief like just like an opinion. But I very much felt like Peterson wants a gadget player the way he had in Kansas City with two with Terry Hill. And they've they've used galore gadgetry sort of ways, but it's never been super productive for them. And I think they really would like that gadget. Type that Peres Campbell type. I don't think they wanna spend an early pick on it. But I do think it is a mold. They wanna fill Dextra cluster was another guy that they brought in local from where I'm from from Largo high school player that kicked out of the kick seminal out of the playoffs. I remember him. "Drills this week. He's dealing with a groin injury Jacobs is the number one running back in the draft. And it projected first round pick and Baylor wide receiver. Jalen Hurd will not participate in drills due to a minor knee scope, so that is the latest and greatest as we go into combine we take a look about her out of Baylor right there. So we'll come back. Now, we have Jim Nagy along with Ryan and hawk and here is is finish up. The highlight. Jim your NFL scowl for eighteen years, you one titled home groom with Bela check with Pete Carroll talk to me, some about their mind processes as we'd go through the draft. How were they similar? How were they different? I think that thing that connected all those guys they're invested in the process, right? There's some coaches that just kind of want to. Sit back and let the personnel guys do their thing. Let the scouts do their thing. But those guys were all invested. So take you back to the first year. Pete was in Seattle two thousand ten I wasn't even with the Seahawks at the time and the senior bowl used to have a really spread out practice form where there was time in between to go back to the hotel. And there was a Xhosa station set up with all the tape. And I go down there to watch tape between practice and who's their peak carols down there watching tape between practices, which told me something. And then when I in my time in New England, Bill Meljak always sat aside a day during the year to watch college tape, which not a lot of not a lot of pro coaches. Do they'll get through the season and get through the coaching, and then kinda jump into the college draft and Bill just kept it all the way through the season one day one day a week, and it just shows their investment that's the same. Yeah. No doubt to NFL. Does these guys over on the N word? Without the combine invite. I honestly, I couldn't believe when they told me earlier today, tell me some of your stories about going through this whole friend, the the cool thing for me was because I wasn't a combine invite. I wasn't invited to any games. Like the senior bowl there on a lot of ages who were willing to pay for me to train. So what I did was I got the key to LSU's indoor facility, and I will go there at night after classes because I knew I wasn't getting drafted. I was getting late. So I needed my degree. So I stayed in school. I would go after school. I would train myself. I would do to twenty five as many times as I can racket do it again. I would go run to forty. I even had a girlfriend at the time who will come time me. And if I had heard time that my pro day, I would ran forward to I think she was trying to make me feel good. But I- trade myself. Marty Smith's Analysis: Does Alabama's Crimson Tide have any real competition?

"Alabama crimson tide mardi like, ooh. Yeah. Nobody's honest to God. We've been talking about this around here their second team led by Jalen hurts is that is that the best competition that they would have if they played in the national championship game against their second team with Jalen Hurd. No, no Clinton's good, man. Not only is Clinton good. They're really starting to figure it out. Trevor Lawrence is he's a bona fide scholar now at quarterback their defenses elite. They look very complete to me now and only in the last couple of weeks have they look back complete. Notre Dame looked very good. The other night. I was here Yankee Stadium. But at this point, I still believe it's Alabama everybody else from a lot of different perspectives. Their death is unbelievable. To he's going to run away with the Heisman Trophy and their physicality. So I think that I think that Alabama. If they don't show up unprepared, which I don't expect and they don't suffer some sort of catastrophic injury. I think I think they're going to win it in convincingly. But Clinton is good guys.

"Of this list there are some interesting running backs in the big twelve matt talk about david montgomery i'm excited to get into him justice hill from oklahoma state is a player that has shown great flashed on films when i've seen tcu has a pair of box that i think are really interesting as well so to me there's the big twelve running back is kind of the position this conference that i'm most excited about why receivers we touched on david sills who else should we be aware of fm the underclassmen racks look at marquess ground from oklahoma who really flashed me i didn't know anything about them but i was i was studying baker mayfield early last fall with those games in his senior season this could really flash me because of how explosive is he's undersized but he can run but you go back to the seniors gary jennings from west virginia we mentioned david sills on one side gary jennings is the other guy and that offense to keep an eye on in the senior class tcu's got a couple kids jalen austin kvant turn pin is known more for his returnability and then a name kind of a blast from the past ross to watch from baylor jalen hurd who was running back at tennessee we all talked about he was the other running back there with alvin kamara then he ended up transferring out went to baylor there were thoughts that he was going to be kind of like an h back at two hundred thirty five pounds but he's lost a bunch of ways it looks like he's down to two twenty he's going to be a wide receiver them this year so i keep an eye out for jalen hurd as well going back to the underclass and we mentioned marquees brown colin johnson's a big kid from texas to lodge hakeem butler from iowa states and other big body kid like allen lazard from last year akeem butler is a big body who could play inside and outside and then denzel mims from baylor as well so some interesting receivers which you would expect coming from the big twelve okay let's get to the titans anybody to know tiedin at senior in the senior class not i got nothing right now in terms of who are watching but to underclassmen one is draft eligible chase allen from iowa state he's going to be a junior this year and then the other name that everybody's really excited about taking over from mark andrews at oklahoma o kind of played that h back role playing the slot grant calcaterra from oklahoma he's going to be a true sophomore so he'll be a big name i would imagine he'll have a lot of production this year so he'll be the big name for that twenty twenty draft when we get into this time next year as a potential junior in that in that class let's get to the line friend you you told me to check out dalton risen and yod knee is could you stay i haven't done juice day so i haven't looked up his official pronunciation but i'm interested interesting because i've heard a lot of good things about us that's why i wanted to watch them what what were you thoughts there well what did you think arisen her i well risen her honestly look this is a kid who's been starting since his true freshman year and he's got all kinds of accolades so i was i was pretty excited going in i was left wanting i don't think that he's overly athletic he's not overly powerful he's not a technician so i'm struggling the see how he's going to excel at a starting level even as a serviceable starter at the next level now this is the kid who's got reps at tackle garden center throughout the course of his career so i think that versatility will help him moving forward and he's got another year obviously to tape to kind of adds to that but i i wasn't overly impressed with risen or so i was a little disappointed when i finish watching them i was not i was not impressed at all i watched them against stanford and i don't really see it and now i will say this i had watched yada ni i yod needs a.

"Because i feel like if i asked you every every other podcast you're feeling on who's going to be the starter and who's going to have the job by the end of the years i feel like is went from to definitively are you back in the hurts camper no well let's not forget that last week two days before the spring game at hayes from bleacher report puts out a big jalen hurd story in it his father is quoted as saying and most of the stories about how you don't write this guy off he's he's fighting to keep the job and matt asks his dad will what happens if he does lose the job and his dad says quite bluntly he well he become the biggest free agent in college football history so i think we always knew as possibility that he might transfer that kind of made it seem like wealthy that it's a definite if he loses the job i think that nick sabin is gonna find every opportunity possible to keep him happy but you're delaying the inevitable a little bit i mean how do you how do you keep guy on the bench who want came out and won the national championship game who anybody with any you don't even have to have much football by to notice that he's a much better passer than jalen hurts i will say watching the spring game you're reminded that he's all the big plays he can make a scrambler and i don't know really got a chance to see that from to you to play one half of one game let's not we did we did see the scrambling though on that first drive was the first or second drive that he came into the game you saw kind of that i mean is jalen exactly on that dimension.
