Cavaliers clinch playoff spot with 108-91 win over Rockets

"The Cavaliers have wrapped up a playoff birth by knocking off the rockets. One O 8 91. Jared Allen delivered 24 points and 14 rebounds for Cleveland, which is going to the playoffs without LeBron James on its roster for the first time since 1998. Donovan Mitchell added 22 points as the Cavs won for the 9th time in 11 games. They are fourth in the east as they try to lock down home court advantage in the first round. Evan mobley finished with 19 points and Darius Garland 17 for Cleveland, Jalen Greene had 30 points in Houston's 5th straight loss. I'm Dave ferry.

"The top two players were lively in Whitehead, both of who went to duke. And no one's at night, but now he's the best guy from that class. These things when I love looking through the ESPN top 100s, they're so funny. They're so wrong. Wrong. And what they get right, but mostly what they get wrong. I want that job. That's what I want my job to do. I want to make that list every year. Because it doesn't seem to matter. Well, recently, John, think of only made his top ten 2024 NBA draft thing and he had brought James tenth. Who I'm not even sure is one of the 5 best person in LA right now. Like we had a guy in Centennial, Jared mcclain, who just won his third straight title who in head to head against Sarah canyon and was the best guy in the game. They're the same age. So I don't know what to make any of this list, but when I see somebody like Noah B 9th, is that a miss or did he get better in the last year? You got better. I think he got better, but that list is always a miss. I mean, especially if you look at the top two guys. I mean, I like lively. I think he's a good rim protector. If I were to compare lively to someone in the NBA, like a Nick Richards maybe as someone that he could be, but he's not the number one player in the class. And you look at the players ahead of Miller on that list, where it ate, fill ups, at 7, George at 6, Bailey at 5 Mitchell at four, Nick Smith at three, Derek Whitehead, two director lively at one. I get it. I do get it with a lot of those guys with Miller. He was more of a purely skinny mid range pull up shooter. He's extended his range of three and improved that rim like we just talked about. And he's done it on a high volume, and he hasn't needed to show his show off his playmaking, which I think is what he's going to show in the NBA. So with Miller, I get that ranking at number 9. But at the same time, it shows how hard this is where a drick white handed Derek lively both completely underwhelming this year at duke, even though lively has been a bit better in recent weeks. Yeah, it's also, these are COVID recruitments right here. You know, these are COVID classes, so you have to almost kind of look at it with a grain of salt. I mean, it could be something that can advise you in a way to look at these guys, but also that was the hesitation I had with the entire class. I'm like, I'm not sure any of these guys are rated properly, which is fascinating. The 2019 is one of my favorites. I love looking through these. Everyone throw out just look through stuff. Two 1018. Wiseman won. Cole, Anthony, too. Wow. Isaiah Stewart three. And then Anthony Edwards, the greatest athlete of all time. He was for RJ Hampton, Vernon carriage junior, Jaden McDaniels, Josh green, Nico Mannion, and Scottie Lewis was our, was our top ten. But then you go to the next year, 2020. Jalen Greene, cade Cunningham, Evan mobley, commanding Scotty Barnes, Jalen suggs. Pretty good. The top 6. Fucking nailed it. Yeah, that was perfect. Think back everything I said. They got it right there. Yeah, so it makes total sense, and then other years doesn't make sense at all. The 21 one, that had Chet, Jaden hardy, second, amani Bates three. Paolo was four. Baldwin junior 5 and jabbar Smith 6. Jalen third 7, but I do think some of the smarter teams do look at these lists like Golden State. I know the Celtics did it too. They did a bunch of times, but go and say, definitely Baldwin junior was at like 20 7th, had the worst college here of all time, right? Goes and plays for his dad. Yeah. Everything goes faster. And go on stage. Let's throw that year away. We're getting a top 5 guy from a year ago. And by the way, he was playing yesterday. So it's not a bad way to think about it just to think, like, that happened as Irene Williams too. We had like the year from hell. And now I would say he's somewhat stable, but so in a way, like the lists are a little bit accurate, but then other times they're just all over the map. I don't know what to make of them. I love looking at them. I read a coffee table book of just the list. I'm going to look at 1983 today. Good book idea. That would be a good idea. Let's put that together. Let's take a quick break. And then I want to talk about some more college shoot stuff.

"Same time for two different organizations, which means it wasn't just that this was percolating. It means that probably, you know, some folks kind of wanted this out. I'm not going to speculate about who or why, but just the one two punch of two reports from two different places with various levels of specificity about it, it's just really interesting and strange. You know, Jake Fisher's report talked about Hardin missing just the rockets, but missing Houston. And I guess his lifestyle there. And his, you know, being part of the pop culture scene. And obviously the nightlife famously infamously he has enjoyed for many, many years. And, you know, okay, fine, but I thought this was a stage a career where harden keeps telling us now I just want to win. I want to win championships. I'm great with embiid and this is it. It's the only thing missing from my resume and every other every interview he does is about pushing back on the notion that he can't win in the postseason or that he can't win the big one or that he's just too about himself. And behind all that, you want to go back to Houston to a rebuilding team with a bunch of guys who are 22 and under to a franchise that you screwed on the way out. This is just bizarre. Bizarre is a good word for it. All right, let's unpack this from a couple of different angles. Hardin's returned to Hardin wanting to return to Houston. I don't get it all. It can't have anything to do with winning. The rockets right now are the worst team in the Western Conference. As we record this, they've got ten wins. They snapped, I think it was a 6 game losing streak against Chicago on Monday night. They have some interesting pieces there. I think Jalen Greene has the potential to be a dynamic score, jabari Smith certainly an interesting two way player. Kevin Porter, junior has a lot of talent, but there's a million question marks around him as far as his ability to be consistent and stay with that talent. They're light years away from competing. His desire to go back to Houston makes no sense from a basketball perspective. Why he wouldn't be eager to stay in Philadelphia, I don't understand, because the 76ers would appear to be a perfect fit for him.

"I did Taylor rooks show last week, and I explained to her. The feeling Howard going on the road in the playoffs in a close game in a hostile environment and making big plays down the stretch and getting a win and then getting back to the locker room with your teammates and the coaching staff and the training staff and the buzz and the energy of that. It is a drug. It is addictive. And it, it's something that I don't know that I'll ever be able to capture again. But that's why I'm so grateful that I got to experience it so many times in the 30 years that I got to play competitive basketball. I want to get back to some of that because I'm really fascinated just about the transition to your career and obviously it wasn't much of a transition in some ways because you were you were doing the podcast for the last several years of your career. So you were, you know, you had some momentum going before you retired. But I want to hit a couple quick NBA things for a minute here because as you and I sit here on December 22nd, we have, I think, in the 20 now my 26th season covering this leak somehow. I don't think I've seen parody like this. I don't know that you ever saw what during your time in the game or as a fan, this kind of parody. Four games are separating number one from number ten in the west right now. The east is a little bit more stratified, but still it's 9 teams or 500 or higher. The raptors are tenth, but they're four games out of 6. Orlando's night games under 500, but feels like a 500 team right now somehow, like they're really competitive, the same with the thunder, like those I feel like those are the two analogs for each other in the two conferences. What the hell is going on? Why do you think there's all this? I wrote about this a couple weeks ago and I got a lot of people with a lot of theories, but what's your feeling about why we're having so much parity in the league right now and is it a good thing or a bad thing? I think it's a great thing. I would start with the talent level in the NBA. I would start there because I was thinking about this even with the Christmas Day games. You mentioned DraftKings. The guys with the 5 best odds of winning MVP right now. They're all playing on Christmas Day. You know who else is playing on Christmas Day? LeBron James, John Moran. We were supposed to get Steph Curry as well. He's not in the top 5 for odds on DraftKings. So like, we've got there's a 5 games at a typical day. We have ten to 12 games. Think about that. We don't have Zion Williamson playing on Christmas. We don't Trae Young. The amount of talent in the league, the amount of players that you can legitimately say are franchise players. I think it's as healthy as it's ever been in terms of the talent level. Some of it, to me, is the luxury tax and teams having to make hard decisions. And because of the supermax contracts now, once the team signs a guy to that, your roster flexibility gets much lower and so that creates parity. You're able to build out teams now in a better way. And then the third thing, there's a lot of smart teams. There's a lot of smart teams and a lot of smart teams have drafted really well. The draft is always going to be a crap shoot. You can never sort of scientifically predict what's going to happen. Because we're human beings. And you don't know if a guy is going to get injured early in his career. You don't know how he's going to react to signing a max contract. You don't know if you don't have the proper player developmental place. You don't have the proper coach in place. You know the proper fit, the pieces around him. You don't know. But I think there's teams that have done it really well. And that this grizzlies, for example, have drafted really well. Yes, they hit on John Moran. They hit on Jaron Jackson junior, but think about the guys that they have drafted later in the draft. Dylan Brooks, Brandon Clark, Desmond Bain, who's now looks like a second star in Memphis. So I think that that's some of it. I don't think there's one thing Howard, why there's so much parity, but I think those are all that's part of the conversation, Shirley. There's things I'm leaving out. There's people smarter than me that can probably point to other factors as well. I agree with all of that and those you hit at least a couple of the factors that other people around the league had kind of suggested to me, including just the fact that as you say, like the talent level is just higher now and guys are coming in, a lot of them just ready to play. And you look at even this rookie class, the last couple of rookie classes, it used to be that you could not make an impact on winning as a rookie in this league for a long time. I mean, some did, obviously. But the generational players did. But generation. Exactly. But not the role guys, right? Not the Benedict Mather rins coming in or something. Like a little lower. David roddy from Memphis. Aldama from Memphis. Memphis mist on a single pick. Shout out to Zach climate. Jeez. The guy avoids any press or publicity and he just goes about that whole that whole front office just goes about and does their job really well. You could survey a thousand NBA fans and unless they lived in Memphis and even those folks probably could not pick Zach kleiman out of a lineup on Twitter on the Internet. Your point though, Howard, it's such a great point about the young talent and their impact on winning. You brought up the magic. I'll mention the Houston Rockets as well. Objectively speaking, neither of these teams are very good. But if you look at some of the wins that they have, why is that? Because they have talented young players. Jalen Greene, Kevin Porter junior, Shang gun, like the magic now finally are starting to hit on some draft picks. Paula Ben Caro at the time, no one thought he was going number one. He's a stud, man. He looks like a guy that's going to give you 25, 8 and 5 for the next 12 to 15 years. I'm just glad we got 12 minutes into the podcast before you went straight to the duke promotion. So that's good. And it was completely natural segue too. Brotherhood, maybe. The brotherhood. That's a real thing, isn't it? Yeah, it is. People ask about it all the time. What makes the duke brotherhood unique and

"Saw that and I was like, you know, I think I'm all set. This whole Brooklyn experiment. I would like to see KD do well. Aesthetically, I still love watching both of those guys, but I have to penalize them for just how unbearable they've been. What's the opposite of a symbiotic relationship? Do you remember when you learn about that in science? And it's like, these two organisms show me together to make things better. What's the opposite of that? That's them. Yeah, dragging each other down, right? Destruction. That's Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Okay. I think that's accurate. Okay, so those are my meanest cuts because obviously both Katie and Kyrie and CP three and Booker have a claim to like top 5 status. The duos watchlist is another category. So I'm sorry. Franz Wagner. Yes, Franz and Paolo down in Orlando. I'm keeping my eye on those guys. I think if we did this next year, certainly the next two or three years, they are going to have a spot in the top ten. It's going to be very fun to watch those guys play off each other. Jalen Greene and tarry Eason in Houston, tari Eason loving what I'm seeing from him in the pre season. There's always one guy in the preseason that everyone gets so ridiculous about. I've seen heat fans tweeting about how Nikola jovic needs to be the backup 5. And now it's rocket stands. It's like jabari Smith is right there, but it's like no, it's tar Eason. Okay. Tari east looks like he's trying to tear the rim off the basket every time he dunks it, love anybody who plays basketball that way. And Jalen green, I think could average like 30 a game in Houston. I can't even imagine how bad the rockets are going to be on defense, but I'm excited about year two Jalen green. And cade Cunningham and Jaden ivy in Detroit. I think Jade nivy is probably a year or two away from being fully weaponized and unleashed on the league, but Kate is ready now to go. I'm putting Taylor Marvin Bagley on my duo's watch list. Wow. I am believing. I'm believing in Bagley. I had Marvin Bagley on my two K team. I think I've told this story before on the pod. When he was, it was before he was actually in the NBA, but I had one of those user created rookie classes, and I was just killing it with Marvin Bagley, so I'm going to big fan ever since. And then I told him that in person, we did like a pre draft interview, and I was like, by the way, you're killing it at center on my two K team. Can you dominate it? I could tell he loved it. So I'm still in on Bagley, dude. I'm so mad. I respect the Bagley loyalty so much. Did you create the rookies or was it generated by some nerd out there on the Internet?

"Golden State clippers, Phoenix, Denver, Memphis, and then Dallas, Minnesota, New Orleans together. And two of those teams are going to be in the plan. That's true. And by the way, it could be Dallas and Minnesota. I'm over on Dallas. Let's do Houston and San Antonio really quick. We'll just zoom through these. Houston's over under his 23 and a half San Antonio's over under his 22 and a half. It is the year of wembanyama. I think I am doing the I'm just going under on everybody who's 24 and under because I think they all have too much incentive to tank. The one thing I was wavering around was Houston. And I think I'm going to go over on Houston and under on all the other bad teams because I think jabbar is going to be really helpful right away, at least defensively and athletically. And I think Jalen Greene wants to bake the all star team. He won't, but he's going to try as hard as to make it in. I don't know. I think they're going to care for half the season. And if they tank, it'll be later. 23 and a half, 24 and 58 is a bad record. So can they get 25 wins? Yeah, I'm probably going over. What do you think of that one? So you're going your general theory was under on the bad teams because of when by Yama and because I think everyone's going to just toss games away as we get closer, but Houston, I don't think they're going to toss away right away. All right, this is something else I spent a long time on. Okay. Because remember last year we'd be watching the bad teams and I'm like, I got to give it to them. They're still playing their asses. Okay, see, it was the best example. OKC, depending on what number you got, you might have landed on the last day. I think I remember sending you a text being like, you gave us the highest fucking number or the lowest number. I probably cheated. And then Detroit, I mean, there were 12 and 45 team, granted Kate missed time, but they finished 11 and 14. So I was like, wait, Detroit's playing their ass off. Here at the end. So my whole theory of last year was I'm going under on all the bad teams because I think it's just what happens. And that was without the best prospect since LeBron James. Yeah. So I remember going, hey, next year, when you do the over unders, remember how hard some of these bad teams played. And I still remember it. And guess what? Houston still went under. Orlando went under, Detroit still went under. OKC, depending on the number you got, came down to like the last couple days because it was maybe 23 and a half. They had 24 wins. The pacers had the 5th worst record. They weren't even close to their total number. I'm going unders on all of them again. I just am even though when you look at Houston in a vacuum and you think, well, wait, they won 20 games last year and now the number is 23 and a half and with another year from Jalen and Kevin port junior, like, did you see his assist numbers? There's some guys I really like. I think sing goons probably gonna do some real shit for you. So now you're starting to see what this team could be. And I'm like, wait, that's not worth four more wins. I think it's gonna be disgusting in the funniest way possible at the end of the year when these teams are just the tank. What are we doing? What's the point? So yeah, I'm probably leaning towards under on like who I think the 7 worst teams are. We agree except I'm going sled over on Houston because I think they're going to give a shit. I'm fine with going. What do you got? Unfortunately, you and I are once again in lockstep. I'm taking the over for Houston in the under for San Antonio. I have one bad team I'm going to do an over on. Okay. Yeah, but I don't. I have no argument on the Houston thing, but to me this is like if you have to play all 30, I'm going to go with how fucked up I think it'll be the last 6 weeks of the season. Is it far fetched to think there could be an awesome Jalen green season? No. It seems like he's going to have the ball all the time. I worry about the Kevin Porter junior part of it. Not overlapping players. Part of the thing that I think is going to alter our math on this is the fact that we have two top guys. And the odds to grab one of those two, it changes. So once you're in the zone,

"Just refresh for anybody who doesn't know. If you give a guy more than 50,000 guaranteed, you can't then put him on your G league team. Right. Because it's kind of like circumventing the G league. So with that. So yeah, so my guess is we're not going to probably get a pretty good chunk of a guarantee here with Toronto and it's going to be a real open competition for the last couple of roster spots. On the 15 man opening night roster for Toronto. Yeah, we should note for anybody who hasn't seen hustle over on Netflix. First of all, go watch it, but Beau Cruz is not really what his name is watch O herding girl nice. There's some people that are probably confused right now. But who's boat Bruce? I still contend that he needs to just change his name to Bo Cruz and just go with it. And which challenge? That's right. That's right. We need to make that happen. Honestly, if you haven't watched it, if you like our show, you'll clearly like basketball or your massive Trevor lane fans. And that's why you're tuning in. So like go watch, go watch hustle. It was fun. There were a couple parts. It was like, that's not how that works. Right. But that's okay. Let's put that aside. They did pretty good. It was a lot of fun. You do the same thing for draft day. You do the same thing for all the other sports. It's good. It's definitely worth checking out. There's this, oh, oh wait, I'm sorry. We can't talk about this one. We don't talk about Bruno. We don't talk about Bruno. The rocket signed Bruno Fernando. So I know Keith, you had something you wanted to mention on this in terms of the decisions that the rockets have to make more than just they sign Bruno Fernando. Yeah, so Houston is in a very interesting spot. Not only have they drafted a ton of guys in the last couple of years what was it for first rounders last year if I remember correctly, right? It was Josh Christopher, usman garuba, Albert shingun, and of course Jalen Greene, as the highlight player to that class. But then this year they drafted jabari Smith, Atari Easton and Thai Thai Washington. So that's 7 players. It's roughly half of your roster drafted in the last two years. But they did a four for one trade for Christian wood. This off season where we brought in Sterling Brown, Trey Burke, marquise Chris and bob and Mariano veg. In that trade. So basically, you have a full roster worth the guys here and they still had guys like Eric Gordon, Kenya, Martin junior, Kevin Porter, junior, David Noah, Jay Sean Tate, who they just resigned. So Houston right now, they're sitting in a little bit of an interesting spot.

"The most shooters they had out there with Thai Thai at once was two. It'd be davion mintz and Kellen Grady. There was never a time where he had more than that out there. In the NBA, in Houston, he's going to have 5 guys out there who can shoot. It's going to be him and it's going to be four other guys, or it's going to be him. And alper and Shen gun and three other guys and chenggu is so good with the ball on his hands on the perimeter that you actually have to push up and guard him on the perimeter. Otherwise he's going to hit you because you have to close down the passing angles. So the court is going to be so much more well spaced for him. He brings out a lot of the skills in terms of processing the game in terms of making high level reads quickly that Jalen Greene is still working on right now. Jalen green for the most part is, okay, I'm going to take a ball screen or I'm going to be on a wing. I'm going to attack close out. I'm going to be catching a second side kick out, maybe getting in isolation attacking, right?.

"It's just my name. But the important question. Did you wear this? Did you wear the suit to rothstein's wedding? Not this one. No. Similar color, but not this one. Pick us in. Here we go, Adam silver. Let's do it. Houston Rockets, draft make third overall. Yeah, the Houston Rockets from what I gather, they I thought that they really liked Paula Ben Caro, I don't know that this is a surprise to them, but I think that I don't know there will be disappointment because you ended up with jabari Smith that I think they probably wanted Paula van carro to be honest. Yeah, they probably do. But it's okay, right? We talked here. I love the fit. I love the fit in Houston, how he's going to be able to play right away as a floor spacer. He's going to help Jalen green even off the ball too. Jalen Greene wants to create those driving lanes are going to be a lot more open when you have a guy you have to hug up to on the perimeter who's going to shoot at less than 40% from NBA three for sure, but he'll get there to be mid 30 ish his rookie year. I would imagine. I love his intensity. I think he brings a chip on his shoulder to that locker room too, where he bought in all the time on auburn. Did he have the ball and advantageous places all the time in offense? No, he didn't. But he didn't huff and puff, he'd yell at the bench a little bit, but Bruce pearl talked a lot about how he loved that fire that he had that you crossed those lines into practice across those lines of the games. He was a different player. They played him on top of the press. They played him on the wing, a little bit in the post, the paint, the things he had to work on. I'd like to handle get tighter. I like to create a little bit more off the dribble. The synergy numbers and advanced stats will tell you that the few number of Tuesday taken is alarming. I just argue it's more of kind of like the system and what he was asked to do too. There's more to his game similar to Chet Homer and that he showed at auburn just because he played into what Bruce perron they want to do..

"Probably not quite as good of a pick and roll partner as Paula Ben Carroll because you're going to be able to switch that action a little bit easier because jabari is just going to try and shoot over the top as opposed to like punish you and take you down into the post. But I don't know. I think it's actually probably a pretty good I think it's probably a pretty good fit at the end of the day and if I was Houston I'd probably be happy with jabari and I'd be happy with chat too and we can talk about that momentarily but like I think that it works for Houston still. Absolutely. And with Houston, you ship out Christian wood, right? So you clear out space regardless of who it is and we're sort of kind of fitting this similar pieces into holes that don't work with. Well, if it is Paulo and you just drafted out from Shang, you have usman garuba, who's probably taking a backseat to all this talk right. But the jabari Smith junior Al presha goon pairing probably works a little bit more cleaner as a four and a 5 defensively, jabari can make up for some of those mistakes. Guard down the line up a little bit, threes and fours, maybe rotate for 5 a little bit, not the shop locker, clearly, that Chet would be if ends up at three. But I like that too. And jabari's translation is really clean. And I don't want a short change him either because we talk so much about the upside of the other guys. Jabari Smith junior is a year younger than Chet holmgren. His developmental track has skyrocketed. He was a top ten kid out of high school he was in the USA system. It's not like he came out of nowhere like a Jalen Williams who's surging. We'll talk about that later. But he's continued to improve at auburn. He improved by leaps and bounds. The jumper actually got better, who's more of a mid range shooter in high school that could take some threes. Now is a three point shooter. We're talking about Kenny M twos. So he's still a baby in his track of where he's going to be. And I'm really high on jabari Smith junior as well. Regardless of where he ends up. And if it is jabari Smith or chat holmgren in Houston, I like both of their fits defensively better without burn sheng goon than I do. Paula van carro. Now, I like the fit of Paula baine Caro and Jalen green more because I think that that two main game would just be phenomenal and as much as I like Shen gun as a prospect. I don't know that you can like truly consider him necessarily whenever you're like diving deep into this and like try and create like a high upside team, right? You take the best guys at the end of the day. And if you evaluate Paula Ben Carroll would be the best fit with Jalen Greene, you take him. But at the same token, it is worth acknowledging like chat holmgren does help to actualize a lot of like outreach on the defensive end. Jabari smith's mobility and his help side defense does help to actualize Shang on the defensive end in Shang's ability to make plays with the ball in his hand as a passer as a ball handler. I actually kind of like that. I do too. I have sold myself on it the last three or four minutes here that it makes a little bit more sense. I'm not worried. I don't need to worry. There's more of an opportunity I would argue for Chet to score more and be this centric force of everything else..

"Probably not. Is there still a possibility of some multi team deal where he goes somewhere? Westbrook goes somewhere and a bunch of other stuff changes. Maybe you're just leaving those options open. And if none of that comes to pass and you have to go into the season with him and you still got this, you know, shadow looming over you and he's obviously, you know, he would like to be set free. He had the opportunity, but not picking up his option, but not that anybody should have expected that. But the closer you get to the trade deadline or the further you get into the season, the less of a burden it is for a team taking it on. You still have to manufacture the cap matching stuff to get it done, but I could see them running out the clock on basically saying at some point he might be of use in some sort of trade and maybe we should hang on for that purpose. But yeah, I mean, it's excruciating in the meantime. This summer has to be the clock's got to run out this summer. You can't go to training camp with the question of John wall, will he or won't he play hanging over this team? And I see no reason if they weren't bringing John wall back last year with Jalen Greene and Kevin Porter junior and Josh Christopher and guys like that in the backcourt. They weren't bringing him back last year. Why would they bring him back this year? Like what would be any different this year than last year? And you're going to spend all season kind of battling with him over what kind of role he would have with the team. If he did come back, I mean, I understand fine. Picks up the option, you look at trades potentially this off season, but you get to like September 1st or even August 1st. Goodbye. Wave him. Like just eat the loss, like that's it. It's over. And move on and try to build something without that distraction hanging over you. It's a fair stance, but like I think it's actually hurting John wall more than it's hurting the rockets and that's not to minimize that. It is hurting. It is a 100% hurting John wall. I think it's hurting. It's not like hurting the rockets because John wall didn't make them a would have made them contender last year. He might have, I think it would have contributed to 5 or 6 more wins because he wasn't really a distraction either, by the way. No, no. He wasn't. Look, only when people like me kind of wrote about it and talked about it and kind of injected myself into those situations down there. But I think you've got to just cut ties for everybody's benefit. Like John wall, you know, take a $5 million haircut and sign for a $5 million exception somewhere, like get your money back one way or the other, just find a way out for both these teams. John wall is missed way too much time in his career due to injuries to miss any more time due to contract issues. Like as simple as that, he's over 30 at this point. You've got to move forward with this. Move forward with your career and the rocket should move forward with their team. Yeah, I mean, listen, he's hurt the most by this..

"Jump. Yeah, I dig this. This is like the kind of guy that you want to put next to Trae Young, I think. Trey has, at times, early in his career, struggled to play a little bit more off the ball, having Terry having Kevin herder, having bogged and Bogdanovich, like, that's enough guys to wear Trey should be able to make a bit of elite playing off the ball. You know, I think that this is a team, it's been rumored throughout the off season that they're looking at Rudy Gobert at the very least. I have no inside information onto that. That is purely coming from the media reports for the love of God do not aggregate this. No aggregations pod. That's the subtitle of game theory. Yeah, but this is a team that is ripe for a consolidation trade. I think it makes a lot of sense for them to consider packaging this pick even within a consolidation trade. So yeah, no, I'm a fan. Okay, you are up here at number 7 with the Houston Rockets. The Rock could still have that back. That wasn't part of the Christian wood trade we discussed, right? The rocket's still of that pick. I'm going tie tie Washington. Oh. That number 17. Look, I've tie tight. Number 14, I'm a big fan of Thai Thai. I think he's a really, really good fit next to jail and green. The reason for that is I think he does a lot of the things that Jalen Greene doesn't on the offensive end. He's a really high level passer. He's a really high level processor of the game. Not to say that Jalen Greene isn't. I think that he's still learning in that regard and we'll get there in time, but Thai Thai passing ability, his shooting will play off the ball really well next to Jalen green. It's just a really, really smart pick Jalen's going to be able to collapse the defense and then he's going to be able to kick it out to Thai Thai like on the weak side. And then Thai Thai is going to be able to get into the paint that way with an advantage, make passing reads. He's an elite level mid range player. He shot 57% on floaters this year. He shot 59% on shots from 8 to 16 feet this year. He is absolutely awesome as an offensive player. Defensively, I have some concerns. I think you just figure it out early in their careers. You have Thai Thai of Jalen green. You have Paulo, you probably need to pair them. You have Albert and Shen goon as well. You probably need to pair them with elite level defensive players off the bench. I think that the rocket should be accumulating talent and trying to figure out what to do with it. Accumulate talent that makes sense next Apollo ban Caro in jaylen green. Thai Thai Washington makes a lot of sense next to those guys..

"From John soch, who were Matt penny's favorite players from pangos. We didn't answer that top. I kinda did. Xavier Booker was, I think, my favorite long-term prospect. They fall was very, very good. I thought Elliot caddo had a dunk played well from the guard spot. Which I think any of more of the top of my head. It was pretty balanced, but Xavier Booker, to me, it was really like the guy who I hadn't seen in a year and had significantly improved and all the high major highest high major stuff is beyond warranted. Let's see here. Oh, I like caden Cooper too. I realized his energy. He was like, he plays with skill factory. Out of Georgia, but I got in a good way, some Katie Johnson vibes from like the Wayne, just really into every single play and intense. I want that guy on my team. Let's see. We're scrolling. We're downloading, we're still here. We're scrolling. They're not skipped. Don't turn it off yet. What is wrong? Over the next 5 years, this is from Courtney Kennedy. Why is everyone so sure Anthony Edwards will be will be better than Jalen green? I'm not like sure of it. I like I've always liked Anthony Edwards like intersection of power and explosiveness. A little bit better and I've always liked those upside a little bit more defensively because of that. Then Jalen Greene, but I don't think that's a sure thing by any stretch of the imagination. They're both like fucking 21 years old or Jalen I think is 20. So I would know that that's not a sure thing. I still take Anthony Edwards. They're both very charismatic. They both have this really deep belief in their game and people really mad on the Internet because that's what we do on the Internet really mad because Anthony Edwards was asked his dream starting 5 and he listed himself at the two. Which is awesome. Like you should..

"I don't care that they drafted Chengdu and usman khruba a year ago. Who knows what happens with Christian wood and Kevin Porter junior, John wall, again. But I sort of like the fire and ice pairing of him with Jalen Greene, who played really well to end the year. And Paolo would bring you immediate toughness that winning mentality of being a final four and being at duke and having so much success in high school. And it's a place that I think that will really embrace the chip on his shoulder. He's going to have if he goes third overall. All Medicare believes he's the best player in the draft and lives it. It's not lip service like he thinks he's the best player and doesn't understand why he's not number one on all the boards. They're going to get the most out of that with that fuel. I don't think he's going to get complacent and be there. Jalen Greene heard the same stuff the first half of the season. And then he turned it on late at the end and had this great finish of the year. You take that guy and now you have Paolo and they're kind of running together. That's a good base to build upon. Regardless of what happens with everything else in the roster. So for Paulo, I considered his reasonable draft range one through three again. I would be surprised if he got on the top three. So considering the top teams, right? Paulo loves to operate in that mid post range. And Orlando's core, like Wendell Carter as much as we like the idea of Wendell Carter shooting tends to operate more in that area. They don't have a ton of shooting right now. I worry that Paulo would get a little bit crowded there and we wouldn't see the best out of him. Right? While he's developing his three point shot, I'm not worried about that happening long term and if Orlando thinks Paulo is the best player in the draft. I think they should just take them and figure it out. I don't have that. I think jabari is a little bit better than he is because I trust jabari defensively and I trust this movement skills a little bit more and I trust the shot a little bit more, but if Orlando thinks that Orlando should take Paula. Oklahoma City, I think it's easier to work around two star questionable defenders than it is to work around three. And in Oklahoma City, if you drafted Paulo, you'd be working with Shay gildas Alexander, who is not a very good defender right now. Josh giddy, who is not a very good defender. And Paulo, who we have defensive questions about in terms of translation. Like, I thought that he got toasted a little bit on the perimeter defensively at duke. I thought that some of it probably was engagement related. At times, not always..

"It pretty much got filled out like we expected it to. Yeah. Yeah, Scotty Barnes, kid Cunningham, Evan mobley, all unanimous first team. No questions at all about that. Franz Wagner got 84 first team votes, 15 second team votes once. Some poor unfortunate soul did not vote for him period for the all rookie team. But I don't have a problem there. Dan, if gets into jail and green, shouldn't have been Herbert Jones with an outside chance of Josh giddy. Those were the next three guys, Jalen Greene, got the final first place, our first team voting. So your first theme, Scottie Barnes, kid Cunningham, MM mobley, Franz Wagner, Jalen green, so the top four picks in the draft. Plus Orlando had the 5th pick, but not the guy. They drafted 5th. That was Jalen suggs. Then the second team, herb Jones and Josh giddy, but the second team, then bones highland, IO Des Moines and Chris duarte. Rounded out. Jonathan kamina was closest. He had 47 second team votes. Chris duarte had 52 second team votes. Io de soon move got two first team votes. And then giddy and Jones got 24 and 32 first team votes respectively. So I don't have any real problem with this. I think the right guys made it. There, just to close the door on it. Austin Reeves, two second team votes. For your guy. HBK, right? Billy Coleman. Bones highland no matter what. That was my thought going into last year's draft, great to see him doing well. Wish you had a different Jersey, but great to great to see him doing well. He is a lot of fun. I'm glad to see him get that second team. Nod there. I think it was kind of funny. So I put out there on Twitter. I tweeted out something to the effect of Austin Reeves did not make first or second team while rookie and just a picture of Austin Reeves. And people went Berserk. On both sides, I've got Lakers fans saying, what? How is this possible? Shouldn't he be on one of these teams? And then I've got fans of everyone else pointing at this tweet and saying, look how delusional Lakers fans are and how could they even think that I literally just tweeted out he wasn't on first or second second team. And people are taking that. However, whichever way that they wanted, it's fantastic. I love Twitter. Yeah, we can do a whole show on that comment later, I guess. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, in general, I love Twitter too. I really do. I need to be better about setting aside the key ones I encounter each day in the innovating and let's stay on in all this stuff. We'll use this as a trend..

"So Jalen Greene and his postgame interview who's just coming out said the rockets game plan was to attack Carmelo Anthony in isolation. That's smart gameplay. There's nothing wrong with that. I don't think that's offensive to Carmelo Anthony. He's a bigger dude, doesn't move his feet super quick. The rockets have a lot of quick guards on the perimeter that are pretty good driving to the basket. That seems like a pretty obvious game plan if you're the rockets to try to ISO mellow when he's on the floor, and then attack from there. That makes sense. Kai's adventures said LeBron's last plane regulation is as bad as his acting in space jam. Frustrations coming in from Singapore. Well, welcome in from Singapore. Eduardo says, hey, trev you should invite Maddie James for a show. He's spending all his money on super chats. Yes. He said, just kidding. Thanks for the venting opportunity. You're welcome, Eduardo. Thank you for the super chat as well. Jared chakra, on a different note. If do you think if Reeves developed his shooting, he can resemble a prime Klay Thompson. I like his defense, even though he's young, I like Austin Reeves a lot, but no. I don't think so. Reeves isn't the pure shooter that Klay Thompson is. And so that's why I'm saying no. I like his defense a lot. I think his shot is coming along. I think he's going to be a really good player. It's not the player comp that I like for frosting Reeves right now. Got to get him with the lethal shooter and the off season man. So you leave the shooter. He got Greg Williams together, shout out to Smith. Great Williams is shooting 50% from three. And he's taking a solid bond room to. So shout out to him while having a great year, but and that's one of the things I wouldn't mind the Lakers keep being handy if they even as an assistant because we know Frank is likely gone, but fail handy's training ability and working out players that player development is world renaissance really respected and Ron leak circles because of his ability to develop players and work with them. So I would love to keep Bill handy with a new potential coaching staff, but unfortunately we'll see where it goes to somebody just comment a sign lethal shooter..

"Great. Jared choker, whoever that sengen guy is alper and singing, he's a guy who the rockets picked up in the draft. I believe they got him number 16 in the draft. Got him in a trade with OKC. I thought it was a nice trade for the rockets. He's a talented player. Him and Jalen Greene made the Lakers look dumb, tired of this team. I've gone from watching intently, game one to just listening now. Fair enough, man. Look, if you got a distance yourself at this point of the season, sure. Understand. Janet green's a stud. He's good. He's a baller, man. Frank Vogel was complimenting him before the game. We did our pre game pressor and Frank Vogel was raving about Jalen green. He was pretty high on him. And we're seeing why. Yeah, man, 32 points on 13, 21 shooting and he just had a great poise about a man. He was not afraid of the moment at all and just say big shot, the big shot, the big shot down the stretch in the fourth quarter in and over time. So, man, he's got pus a good one in January. He's going to be a stud man. Maddie James LeBron 33% from the field, one of 9 from three, poor decisions down the stretch, couldn't make the layup down the stretch. Look, it was not a good game for LeBron. There's no question. It's not a good game. And again, we don't know how big a factor of the injury was. Was it just a bad night? Was he not feeling it? Whatever it was, it was a bad game. It was a bad performance by LeBron, and I think that his energy level was mimicked by the rest of the team because that's what we've seen from them this season. If LeBron is fired up and he's going out there and he's going a 150% and he's closing out, everybody else does too. When LeBron's not, everybody else follows suit and they're low energy as well. And I shouldn't say everybody. There's a few players who still hustle through everything. But in general, LeBron's whatever LeBron is at, everybody else seems to seems to follow that. John Robertson Dow said, LeBron doesn't care in winning tonight, he was only thinking about moving up the all time assist ranking. So now it's the assist rate for a while people were saying, it's his only word. Come on. Now it's the assist. This team is so weird. We'll win against the warriors and we'll lose to Houston John Hamilton. See, that's the other thing too. As much as this is another one of those games where as much as we want to dissect the X's and O's, and we can talk about the stagnation of ball, particularly late in the game and on the U and I were texting about a rant about.

"You know, the NBA draft lottery was last night, the 14 teams that did not make the NBA playoffs. Spurs had a 1.7% chance of getting the number one pick. Conversely, They had 98.3% odds of getting the number 12 pick. And they got the number. 12 Pick second year in a row number 12, isn't it? Yes. Detroit got the number one pick their first number one pick since 1917. I believe back Then they grabbed a guy named Bob Lanier. Yeah, he was pretty good. Yeah, There's uh, There's not any Bob Lanier types hanging around this go around. Houston Rockets get the second pig. Plus, they've got those 25 picks that they got from Brooklyn for James Harden. They might be pretty good. About four or five years. Yeah. Cleveland third, Toronto fourth and Orlando fifth. I think both Orlando and Golden State both ended up with two picks each. In the lottery. So what do the Spurs do? Going to have to ask somebody a whole lot smarter than me. No, they're not going to get Kate Cunningham, Evan Mobley out of USC or Jalen Greene. Kay Cunningham out of Oklahoma State guard Evan Mobley out of USC center Jalen Green shooting guard out of the G league. He didn't go to college. This draft. I don't know a lot about the draft, but you look at draft boards whose, you know ranked as you know the top players through whatever number it is guard. Every big time. Yes, something like 25 of the top 30 projected 1st 30 Pixar, All guards. Spurs don't need no guards, No Or then again, maybe they do because if you look at why is it guard heavy? Because in high school, the game has turned two guards and shooting college is the same thing. And the NBA use is also the same thing. Who's got big man that matter. Got Nikola Jokic of Utah who won the league MVP. What good did that do them? No, they're done. Maybe this first. Grab a guard. Maybe they're looking for a big man. I don't know. Big men include Isaiah Jackson Power forward out of Kentucky, who could be around 12 Al for instant gun, a power forward out of Turkey. That's not a college. That's a country he's a power forward, and Greg Brown power forward out of Texas. Those are about the only really big guys that I'm aware of, and For Greg Brown to go at number 12 would seem to be just a little early. I think so. I don't know what they're going to do, but I can tell you this the biggest concern The San Antonio Spurs have is something they can do absolutely nothing about. And that's what happens with DEMAR DeRozan. Because he's an unrestricted free agent. It's up to him whether he wants to come back or whether he wants to bolt. And we do know that he has said, And of course you would. He's going to test the market. You've got to test the market. Because other than the game being about guards It's always been about The money. Oh, yeah, so we'll see what happens. But there do you go.
