"So it's San Antonio, is the spot. If he's going to get like a sandbag incentive a bitch, he worked it all the way back. That's pretty good. That's pretty good. I did. I'm pretty good at this, aren't I? Yeah, no. If he's going to get it, it's probably going to be San Antonio, I would think. But maybe he does just stay there. It'd be hilarious if he took the qualifying offer. He should. I think that's a bad idea for him for what it's worth. I think he should take his money, go get his money. But yeah, I wonder. I don't know. Deandre's in a weird spot. It's hard because there are not many landing spots because there are not many teams that want to invest this crazy amount of money in banks. And it seems like Phoenix wants him back only at a certain price point. Let's say, is maybe the best language. There's also just not a lot of parallels. There's not a lot of examples of stuff like this happening. I'm struggling to think of one. Former number one overall pick has had a really strong run in the playoffs, but there are still questions about his overall upside. Yeah, he's like 23 years old. Of course, for what the future of Deandre ayton looks like. There was a point in the playoffs where prior to the thallus series, I was like, is this kind of like already a top 5 center in the league? Is that a thing? Are we at that point? And you start you're a big fan? I'm a big fan of ayton. But I don't disagree with the positional matrix that limits how much you should be investing in a 5. Because as versatile as he is, as valuable as he can be on the perimeter as much as you can, switch a bunch of stuff as much as he has that great pick and pop game. Like all of these things, there's a cap and there's ways that if you catch the wrong matchup, he can really get he can really get exposed. And I don't think that that's anything about him. I think that that's just the fact that he's not the truest of all the unicorns because he's not he's not an MVP caliber player. He's a borderline all star caliber player..

"You know what I'm saying? You don't aggregate that. That's not a serious point. I'm just saying I still have to get next jokes in here somehow after we've been praising them. And it's just to say that it's all in. It's got to be all in this year. And yes, the taxes prohibitive. And yes, they haven't one diddly squat and it's, yes, Jalen Brunson is going to be filling up the garden every night and taking even more of a market share for the New York Knicks because Tim's ball is back, but if you're going to do it, do it right, Joe si, like just do it. And pay for good players who can make your team go one through 9, one through ten because you're going to need that depth in the regular season and you're sure as hell going to need it in the postseason just because every minute is so vital, make sure you have a deep enough team. And I do appreciate that the nets can develop players that you appreciate that the nets have a good eye for talent, I think, in the front office, but like less Blake Griffin, more Bruce Brown and if that's going to cost you a little bit more, it costs you a little bit more, but again, as you were noting and I agree, they're close. I mean, a lot of shit's got to go right, but like in no way out of the realm of possibility. This is still a team that has to be considered of the highest Echelon in the league. And I don't even know if everything has to go right into the case. I think people were so fast people. People were so fast. I don't blame anybody for being part of it. This is just the natural arc of narrative. It was just going to be like, ah, shit. And that's ruin the league. It was going to work automatically, even with Kevin not there. And when it didn't, it had to reverse just as fast. And it's like that's never been the case, much like their jerseys shade of gray and man, simmonds is a better player for this team if actualized than James Harden would be. Just because of what he can bring on the defensive side. Is it as fun? Probably not. But there's not a redundancy there in any way, shape or form. He is one of one. Kevin Durant needs to get needs to get Ben Simmons. On a zoom or in some house in LA and instead of video games, they can just watch draymond green short roll clips all day every day and you turn Ben Simmons into draymond green fully actual like beyond any realm of human possibility. Like the ultimate versatile 5 defensive positions guy who is just a beast as you noted in the pick and roll..

"I would expect that it's been the expectation since the trade deadline when they purposely acquired Spencer Dinwiddie as potential insurance for this. Right. I think they wanted to. It wasn't even a conversation about maybe they keep them. They're going to offer them a bag and the Knicks are going to offer them the bag and he's going to go to New York. That look, look, I'd kind of been told that it was unlike, look, here's the thing. So on the show I did with Danny larue. I mentioned, look, I didn't think that Jalen Brunson was saying, I know that it was right after the playoffs and I know that it was right after everyone had kind of said that, but I kind of even the way that I phrased things there kind of tried to make it so bad spans were prepped for him, leaving. You buttered the pan. Yeah, but I wasn't sure because I kind of also been told that the playoffs really made like a real chance at reconsideration, right? Like, hey, we have this great thing going. We just made the Conference Finals, like maybe I don't think it was a surefire done deal thing that he was leaving. You know, after the playoffs, I thought he was leaving before that, but I also think that the playoffs might have changed some things. It has nothing to do with tampering. It has nothing to do with anything like that. It's just, you know, family is families important. You know, like people want to be back around the areas that they're from. And it's close. Some guys want to get us all away from it as possible. Obviously, it's a good situation with the Knicks when you think about all the connections and if nothing else, Jalen Brunson knows the New York Knicks are going to take care of him and his family. That's a big deal. Right. Well, and I remember saying this on the show right after it happened, but like do you remember those headlines when the world wide west and Leon rose and Julius Randle all showed up courtside for the jazz mav series? Yeah. I kind of made the point that I don't think that was for dawn of a Mitchell. I think that Donovan was, it was good to be there for Donovan. Right. I think it was more for Julius or for Jalen Brunson. In terms of why they were there. And I've said that before on the show, maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. We got them now. But regardless, I think the Dallas kind of prep for this eventuality by acquiring Spencer Dinwiddie at the off season. And I think that deal was more about ending the Christophe's era, but I also think that they wanted some insurance in case this was going to happen. I don't know what they do from here. I think that they just kind of have to rock with what they got right now. And then kind of let this play out over the next couple of years, whenever they can clear some flexibility again..

"And you then continue down this road of trying to get a star, right? Like you have all these extra assets, you traded the 11th overall pick for three first round picks from the Oklahoma City Thunder. You have this extra Dallas pick still. You have your picks, like there's a lot of, there are a lot of avenues that could open up down the road, even if there isn't a star available right now. There are avenues that could open up down the road that could make this look different in hindsight. I don't even want to say it looks bad because I don't know that it doesn't look bad. I don't think I'm quite as low on this as everyone else seems to be. I don't know that I love it. It's just not sexy. There's nothing sexy about bringing in Jalen Brooks. He doesn't sell jerseys, man. It's not, it's not anything like what the next did, but that might be a benefit. That might be more of a feature than a bug. But the nets are doing. As it worked yet. So you have Tom thibodeau is your head coach. You're going to be winning on effort and grit and probably burning dudes out. There's only so many point guards that can actually do that. What Tom thibodeau wants them to do in the league. Jalen Brunson is unquestionably one of them. So it's a great move for the Nixon that regard. It just doesn't win the PR game. And it's not ultimately what needs to be done. It can't be it for them. And I'm really glad that you brought up the three lefties thing because again, I have no idea what you do with Julius Randle. And I think that there's a lot of that Julius Randle aftermath that's sort of seeping into this where, okay, now the Knicks are all in on Jalen Brunson, like this, again, moving heaven and earth to get him. Well, they gave all the money to Julius Randle after one year. Jalen Brunson's breakout year was then one year really. I know it's been developing here for a minute, but he really came through one year. There's not a lot of faith in the rose administration. Yeah. Yeah. Where he's a $27 million player, it's been one year, for sure. Totally. So I understand who are starving for a true superstar. One, they're not getting it, even though it's going to be a damn good player for them. And two, there's not a lot of faith in the fact that the Nixon have done business up until this point where they've overpaid overachievers. And you can look at Jalen Brunson, and I don't think this is correct, but you can look at Jalen Brunson and say, here we go again. So they need to do something else than the issue is. It's still the Knicks. It's still the white points next. And I don't know who's deeply interested outside of Donovan Mitchell of going in and I don't know if Donovan Mitchell changes everything for them either. Yeah, like and it seems like Donovan isn't available first and foremost as well. He also is under contract by the Utah JS. Yeah, so like I think that'd be cool. Like go get Donovan Mitchell, that'd be great..

"Here's the Taj. Yeah, and the thing is, I really like the concept of Jalen Brunson as a Tom thibodeau point guard. Like I really think that that will work and that it will be very fruitful to the New York Knicks and Jalen Brunson, like I do like this marriage. It can not stand alone, though. This can not be the Knicks only move because as you said, they moved heaven and earth. And if this was any other market in America, maybe this wouldn't be as big of a deal. But the Knicks are making big moves for the tenth to 15th best point guard in the NBA. I mean, and that's saying something. You know, this is a guy who kind of got out of the mud in a little bit, you know, not expected much when he came into the league. He's a really good player. And he's going to be, I think, really good for the Knicks. But if the Knicks want to get themselves into any level of contention or just back to a baseline level of competency where you can expect them to be in the real playoffs year in and year out, it might be a struggle, but they'll get in year in and year out. I don't think Jalen Brunson and a couple of hopes and a prayer about Emmanuel quickly or some of the young players on this team is going to get them there. They still need to, they still need to do something else. And I think that that goes beyond just sort of bi annual exception or mid level because Jalen Brunson is not going, in my opinion, at least I hope I'm wrong about this because I really do like watching him play. He's not going to get you to that next level. He's not going to get to that next level. He was a high floor, fairly low ceiling player who's already busted through that ceiling. And I think some people can make the argument of, oh, he'll just keep going. He's going to have a good year. It's going to look like good money, in my opinion. Again, all that does is give the Knicks a competent point guard. They need way more than that to really compete in the Eastern Conference. And I appreciate that they're bold about it. They had their guy. I do think that there's some value to the notion of it's a very familial thing with the rose family and everything going on with Jalen like he's truly wants to be there, but again, we're talking about Jalen man. Yeah, it's a follow to follow on that. So Leon rose, his first client was Rick Brunson, who is Jalen's father. Very long-term connection there in terms of the families. They've known hell jaylen within 5 days of him being born..

"Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the NBA front office show. Been a few days, but I was traveling. I was out of town in Atlanta, actually, covering some pre draft workouts. Got to see an open run in Atlanta that was oh boy, it was fantastic. I'll have some more on that in the future, but it was great, great to get to see some in person basketball. And I actually pretty high level stuff too, that I had a lot of fun there. But we are finally back in action here for the NBA front office show, I'm Trevor lane, by the way, you can find me on Twitter at Trevor underscore lane joined by Keith Smith at K Smith NBA. Keith, we had a couple days off, but I'm ready to rock and roll again. Yeah, yeah, me too. It's been nonstop this time of year because it's playoffs and then we're starting to get news, stuff coming out and we've got draft stuff coming up and draft workouts and all that. So it really just goes one thing into the other and into the next and into the next but it's a fun time of year with a million things going on in the NBA. Well, why don't we start with some news that you may have kind of broke the Jonathan Isaac situation with his contract with the Orlando Magic? Why don't we kick off with that? What's going on there? Yeah, I'm not certainly not sure if I broke this or not. There's possibility somebody had it first. If so, my money would be on Bobby marks, ESPN because he's usually all over everything contract wise. But so here's the simplest way to think of this. Jonathan Isaac's contract was a flat $17.4 million per season through 24 25. So that was a four year deal. Started this year. Obviously, he didn't play this season. That's not played at all in the last two seasons. And then it's three years after that. It was set to be fully guaranteed, but there was a clause in his contract with certain injuries if he did not meet games played thresholds due to those injuries. That is contract would become partially guaranteed. There were remaining years this year stays fully guaranteed, which obviously would, we're well past the January 10th fully guaranteed deadline. So what that means is, for next season, the 22 23 season, it goes from 17.4 million to 16 million guaranteed. For the 23 24, 17.4 million to 7.6 million guaranteed, and then the final season at 17.4 million becomes fully non guaranteed. So no guarantee at all on that season. Now how this works, though, is 17.4 million saves as capital. It's just like any of the other non guaranteed contracts we talk about. That stays as capital. And the magic only receive any sort of cap relief. If they were to waive Jonathan Isaac from his contract. So the one we've probably talked to most of what I think is probably Al Horford, right? Where he has kind of that 14 and a half million of his 26.5 million guaranteed, but it only matters if he gets waived. That's the only way this really matters. And there's no sense the magic or willing to even discuss that or look at that or anything. Certainly not before they see Jonathan Isaac get back on the court, which the news on that recently was feels good about his rehab and that he thinks he'll be ready to go next season. But still worth noting. And then what happens each of those years is they have full guarantee amount kicks in. On January 10th, one all count contracts each year become fully guaranteed..

"This is your, this is the guy, everybody wants to be there, head coach. The whole not criticizing player stuff. I don't get too worked up about that because I think if you want to get back in the game, you're not going to do that. But yeah, when it's simple strategy stuff, that seems a little odd. Yeah, indeed. I mean, I think when we step back and we look at Mark Jackson's coaching candidacy, how long has it been since he's been a head coach? It's been a while. At least 5, 6 years, yeah. Probably even longer. Why is he still out there? I keep coming back then. And I've got, look, he's super polarizing. I mean, I hear Lakers fans every day. Fans of other teams too saying Mark Jackson is great. Look at the warriors. He put poured the foundation for that team. Steve Kerr just kind of took it to the next level, but Mark Jackson's a fantastic coach. I've got other people saying Mark Jackson is not a good coach at all. He's going to create problems within the organization. All that kind of stuff. So he's extremely polarizing, but I just keep going back to that. What is it that has prevented an NBA team from hiring him for the last 5, 6? However many years, it's been. To me, that is the thing that speaks the loudest here and gives me cause for concern. I hope somebody hires him if it's the kings, but I hope he has great success. I hope it works out fantastic. That would just give me pause, it feels like the teams that have been interviewing him that have been doing these really do the digging on it, obviously there's some reason why he hasn't been a coach since then. Yep. Yeah, could completely agree. Yeah, I think you, yeah, those are all fair questions to ask. And that's part of what the process is too is like, I heard you've been at least mentioned, and maybe even interviewed for several of these jobs over the last, you know, several years since you've been out of coaching, why hasn't it happened? And what do you think the reasons are? And we should note to Mark Stein says that he really impressed of a vector in a diva. And that he's really, you know, maybe has that shot at the king's job. So maybe this is all this Lakers portion of the discussion is all. All meaningless because maybe he's going to get the king's job, but I do think it is we'll see because there's definitely going to be questions to be answered of aren't hasten juvenile. What did you learn? And what are you going to do differently this time around? That's going to lead you to be more of a success and I would hope the answer isn't just nothing. I want to do exactly what I did before because I don't think that's going to go really well. Well, and Stein did mention that he will be on the Lakers list if he doesn't get the Sacramento job Mark Jackson will, but he doesn't get the sense that he's a strong chance of getting the job in LA. So something to note there as well. Let's talk so tonight we get game one between the Mavs and the Phoenix Suns, which I think is going to be really exciting series of one that I'm looking forward to..

"So this is really kind of a new path that's being forged for kids is where we're seeing this NASA are coming and basically say I'm out after two years of high school. I'm going to go this route instead. And he said they built a relationship with them and it feels really good and he wants to get into a place where he is what's best for him as a basketball player. He wants to be moving his professional path forward. So let's keep an eye on this and see where this goes here. Over time elite, you can read on a go Google and look it up. He will go to classes, he will still get it. There's a big, heavy educational component. This essentially rivals the academy models. Everywhere else in the world. Yeah. So that's what's different. Then they are not linked directly with an MBA team, obviously, because it's not how our professional sports work. But that's what this is like, this is the academy model app, right? It's similar to like the soccer system. And so it's going to be interesting to see how all this plays out. And then what ultimately is this becomes a bigger and bigger thing, whether it's G league ignite academy system, how does NCAA respond to all of this? How do rules? There's going to be a domino effect here. So how do they tweak things in terms of NBA eligibility and all that? Do we ultimately go to a two or none scenario instead of one and done? Do we go to something like that? For college, it's going to be interesting to see what the ramifications are. If this becomes a bigger, I think one player doing it that probably doesn't signal a huge shift or whatever. But if we start to see other people go this route, then there's going to be a domino effect here or a ripple effect where it's going to leak into college sports. It's going to potentially affect the G league as well. Just the whole process by which a player goes from that level play up to the NBA. We could be in the middle of a continuing shift away from the traditional go to college for this many years, then you go pro, then I think we're looking at a shift in terms of how players become professionals. Yeah, I know everywhere else in the world does it this way, that's how you get Luka Dončić as a 15 and 16 year old playing against professionals and in Spain, the way he did. And this is also as you get into this stuff..

"You figure it out and working out from there. So when you're looking at that strategy too, not only have you split up because you looked at Davis bretons, you'd like to Spencer didn't Winnie. Those were guys that the wizards, most likely regretted signing, right? There were some buyers there. They weren't fans of those deals, but you split up that contract to make them removable and now you've got a pretty solid performance out of Spencer Dinwiddie in particular, right? So you kind of got, you got the best of both worlds, not only did you split up the contract, but you also got some positive performance here. Now it's where you can say, hey, we don't have to trade Spencer didn't. What do you see? This can fit this can work no problem. And then that gives you a little bit more leverage in any kind of trade negotiations and that sort of thing. So I could also think too just real quick to kind of close the loop on this one. I get to think to you if you're Dallas you're looking out and saying, and I realized this may sound absolutely insane because he is not played wells. Well, really since signing that contract, but you'll be looking at and saying, hey, if we can get the office protons bought back on track, like just being the shooting machine that he was playing with Luca, and is he really all that different for us and what porzingis was? Different style applier, but production value may end up being right around the same for literally half the cost. And that is that becomes massive because that again, that changes the way you think about building your roster move before. But yeah, it's probably something we'll, when we have more time on another show, just really get into the theories around roster building where we might see some things starting to change. But yeah, we're both clearly on the same page of I think we're seeing a shift here where we're moving away from the load up three guys and stars and scrubs, fantasy sports kind of analogy. Yeah, teams are teams are starting to understand that. Obviously, and the Lakers, of course, are cautionary tale of what happens if you don't give enough respect to the role players and what that means to have that chemistry and all those sorts of things..

"But what we see here in the tournament, that low seed hangs around when you get under the 8 minute mark in the second half, now they start to believe, right? And they're like, we're here. We're not going away. And then that's when it gets real tight for the higher seat. Well, it's not the game within a game that that works. Necessarily, but within a series, you go into the last couple games and the team is hanging around and they're still in the series. Now it becomes a problem and clearly this pelican seem that I think they came in with the attitude of supposed to lose. But hey, we got to play the games anyway. I had a coach once I used to tell us all the time when I were playing the team that should beat us. He'd be like, hey guys, we got to go there anyway. We might as well go there to win. And we'd go play in a holiday turn to me and be like, well, we're going. Might as well bring home a trophy, right? Might as well. There's just his way of trying to take the edge off of like, you know, don't be nervous. We're okay. So yeah, I think this is going to be really, really interesting. To see how this all comes together. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. Let's jump over. And by the way, yes, I agree a 100% that we're going to be, it's going to be interesting to see the way this whole this whole thing closes out. But let's jump over to the Jalen Brunson situation with the maps. So Jalen Brunson's dad, let it be known that the Mavs are not going to get a hometown discount. We've talked a lot about the free agent market this summer and how ridiculously shallow it is. There's just not a lot out there, Jalen Brunson, being one of the guys that that's out there on the market, he's I mean, he's set to cash in. There's not a lot of money out there either, but the teams with cap space are certainly looking at jaylen Brunson. He's probably the top, if not one of the top names on the market. So would that be the case? They're kind of already putting out there like, hey, no, Dallas, if you want to keep him, you're going to have to pay and I think he's going to get a pretty hefty payday. And this is really what he should be putting out there right now. Like this is his chance for generational wealth. Why not make it clear that, hey, I'm going to take advantage of this opportunity. I know what the market looks like, and I'm going to make sure that I get myself set up for the future here. If anybody doesn't know, Jalen Brunson's dad is Rick Brunson, who played in the league for a very long time. And has also been a coach as well. So I think he might be speaking from an educated place on this rather than just a proud dad, firing off of like, hey, you want my kid, you're not to pay for him. But I do think what's really very fun to monitor with this too is because you mentioned the teams with cap space because we've already heard the pistons and pacers connected to him..

"Hello, everybody. Welcome back to the NBA front office show what a night in the NBA last night. We've got a lot to talk about from sun's pelicans, who would expect that that series to be where it's at right now. We'll talk a little bit of news as well. Jalen Brunson, his situation, Ben Simmons, of course, everything going on there. I'm Trevor lane, by the way, you can find me on Twitter at Trevor underscore lane Keith Smith. Joining me at Keith Smith NBA. Keith, I'll be honest, you know, we did our weekend update. And ever since then, yesterday, when you drop that bomb on me and you told me that there are people out there that don't like Moon Knight, I have not been able to get that out of my head. I'm like, what are people thinking? This is amazing. It's driving me a little bit crazy. I will admit. Yeah, there are definitely people who are not fans. I actually met a person many person in person, I guess that's a weird way to put that. But. Is that what we say? That's what the kids say. I was actually at the eye doctor and he just randomly said, he first commented about which I was wearing a Celtic shirt, any asked me about the series, and then he said, he said, just out of nowhere, he's like, do you like marvel? And I was like, yeah, actually, he goes, are you watching Moon Knight? I was hoping he was going to be like, I knew what you are the front office. You know, he's going to get recognized. We didn't go that way. And then he's like, you watch a mood and I was like, yeah, and he's like, yeah, me too. He goes, but I'm just not into it. He's like, it's fine. It really boring. He goes, I could do without all the Indiana Jones stuff. And I was like, oh no. I was a little disappointed, but at that point they called me back and that's why my eyes are dilated if anybody's watching on YouTube and I look like a Disney cartoon character with giant pupils to this is why. It's the animated version. So if you're listening to the podcast version of this, go check out the YouTube channel so you can see what it is that we're talking about. All right, well, Moon Knight or otherwise, I guess let's kick things off with pelicans and sons. Mine, am I goodness? We got a two two series here now in Devin Booker being out certainly is a big factor here, but the pelicans, they brought the energy, they were fired up, you had alvarado was making big plays steal the ball from Chris Paul. You had, I mean, that place was rocking Brandon Ingram doing things, and now you've got a best of three series, are we headed towards a Denver Seattle esque one 8 upset?.

"He's one of the best defensive players in the NBA when he's healthy. The challenge is putting him back into the rotation now and not having that kind of time to build chemistry on the floor. But I wonder how much of that is the nets just look and they go, we're not big enough. You're what? 6 9 6 ten. Get in there when we need you to do some of the things that you can do out there. And I do respect those who are saying like, hey, we just need to throw somebody with a little bit more size at Jayson Tatum. And people are right when they said, I mean, they played four minutes at Kessler Edwards, and he was a negative 6. His Simmons going to be worse than that. Probably not. Yeah, I hope everybody is very reasonable. The folks who were saying, look, we just need ten minutes. Okay, sure. Neil, I can live with that. Anybody who's thinking you're throwing them in there for 35, 40 minutes. Also, does Celtics probably have the book on how to defend him better than anybody else. It's very insulting to suggest, well, those teams didn't have Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. That's fair, but it's not like those teams were full of horrible offensive players either. They had Joel embiid dad Tobias errors. They had other guys who can score and shoot. Like, let's not get too silly about that. But I certainly don't think it's going to hurt them to a degree where it swings the series so far that's like, what a brutal decision this was. But I also don't think this is going to swing the series to where all right, well, the nets went down. I think it's more likely to be a slightly negative impact than it is to be a hugely positive. The question is, is it less of a negative impact than whoever else they would bring off the bench? And that's what the are looking to do there. And then as far as the well, they didn't have KD or they didn't have Kyrie on previous Ben Simmons teams. I mean, there's some truth to that just because that version of Joel embiid Tobias Harris certainly, those aren't guys where if everything gets gummed up and Ben Simmons is creating spacing issues and all that, you can't just give the ball to those guys and say, well, nothing worked. Go make something happen. You can do that with Kevin Durant and Kyrie and get decent looks. And now what I will say to you is though this kind of gives the Celtics a little bit more of an out to just send an extra guy. Those guys, because they just won't defend them. Defending Bruce Brown in game one, they really won't defend Simmons. I mean, there's plenty of clips and still shots and everything else of Celtics have defended Ben Simmons over the year. And it's put the second guy about 15 feet off him and in the paint..

"Not the best free agents out there, assuming, you know, like Zach lavine and guys like that are staying with their current teams. The pacers targeting Jalen Brunson, that's an interesting fit and to me, not to get too far ahead of ourselves here, but that gives even more credibility to the news that the pacers are probably going to look to move on from Malcolm Brogdon. Yeah, I think the idea with Brunson is I think they think he can fit alongside tyrese Halliburton really well. Maybe in ways better than brogden can. And I wonder if their idea with brogden is there's too many injuries. Now with that, that they want to get a more stable guy in there. I do project the pacers now, so I've redone all of my salary cap projections. Once again, as we kind of draft positions have been finalized and the like. They're one of only three teams. I project to have cap space. It will pre lottery draft positions. Let me rephrase that. This off season I project them on about 25 million in space. Which is that's a big number. And that's enough to, if you really wanted to get in on Brunson, they could do it without it having to be a sign and trade, which some of the other places that have been mentioned for him would have to be sign and trade. So I think it's interesting. Now, it was funny to see the reaction to that report from some Mavs fans who were like, he's going to go play for Rick Carlisle, who buried him on the bench previously. Yeah, I don't know about that. But we'll find out, right? One of those things we're often, it's the grass isn't always greener, you don't know what you got till it's gone or well, whatever that song says. So we'll see. So Joni Mitchell, I think. I don't know. I'm not a big music guy. I like music, but I'm not the music historian. Someone will correct me. I went 80s hair metal with that. So let me look that up while we're talking to the version I like of that song that looks like big yellow taxi. I like that counting crows version of that. Okay, the song that popped into my head don't know what you got till it's gone. It's by Cinderella, which again is like 80s. Oh, I know. That's what came to me. Okay. Yeah, yeah. We're on the same window. I went with the line from it, right? You don't know what you got to. Gotcha. But I'll save everybody from singing because that's not why anyone's here. So moving on next time. Let's do that. In fact, here Keith, just to get you on a different wavelength, let's go to your guy, Marcus smart winning defensive player of the year. Both of us had him projected to be the defensive player of the year. He was number one on your ballot as well, wasn't he? Yeah, I'm pretty sure he was. He was on mine. Makes sense. And the first time in a long time. Since a guard has won defensive player of the year. Absolutely incredible. Well deserved Marcus smart defensive player of the year officially. Yeah, I mean, huge. I mean, you know, incredible honor for him..

"Guys who's putting a little bit more pressure on his teammates on the coaches, maybe even on the front office to, hey, let's keep this going. We're finally becoming the team we thought we could be. Let's do this. And why that is probably a little bit more important is that means that it's not, hey, I don't just want to see a Dennis shorter salary dump at the trade deadline, like get us some help, let's try to improve this team. And I think that is, that's what's the best players on the team should do. They should be pushing teams to continually make the team better. As long as you don't get involved in, go get this guy go get that guy because that's when it can go sideways. Just put that pressure on and go from there. So not a huge story. A lot of people are taking it as jaylen Brown wants out or jaylen Brown says must win or I'm leaving. It's not that's not the story but the story is, you know, hey, there's starting to be a little bit of pressure from Brown and the reality is he's halfway through his contract that he signed his new deal that he signed kicked in last year. This is year two of it. So after this year, he's only got two more years under contract left, and that's about when we start to hear guys if they're in the position to put a little pressure on their organization. Absolutely. So we'll see where things go from there. Let's finish things up, though, with another wing player. Jeremy grant, welcome back. Yeah. Welcome back. Jeremy, it sounds like he might even play tonight. Obviously a major name out there on the trade market. We'll see how that might factor in to maybe how many minutes he plays and that sort of thing. But he could be back. He's expected to be back this week and could even play in tonight's game for the Detroit Pistons, nice to see him back out on the floor. Yeah, and let me use this as a little bit of a soapbox moment. The pistons do not need to nor will they showcase Jeremy grant. They may get him out there to prove, hey, he's southeast past the thumb injuries ready to go. But they don't need to say, hey, Jeremy, grant, you're going to play 40 minutes a night, so teams can really see how good you are. It's not how this works. Teams know who Jeremy grant is. They feel really good about Jeremy grant's skill set. They just need to maybe there might be a couple of cake. Can we see him play a couple games? I just want to make sure that thumb doesn't look like it's a mess. With that, but showcasing players is that is when it is a player who was not in the rotation at all, all of a sudden is in the rotation and playing 25 minutes a night in games and it's like, where did this come from? That's a showcase. Teams don't have to showcase because I've heard some people saying the Celtics push Dennis Schroeder to play so they could showcase him with boy the first trade value..

NBA Front Office w/ Keith Smith & Trevor Lane
"jalen brunson" Discussed on NBA Front Office w/ Keith Smith & Trevor Lane
"The worst he becomes the one of the best 6 men in the league. The best he's a starting garden. We feel pretty good. About the way this roster coming together. And I think there's a thought of right now, Luke is kind of a guard, but you could put him out forward if you got a really good defensive guard in there. That's all kind of become miss marsh and it flows together anyway now. Within that world and their ecosystem and in their offense. So yeah, this says to me, he's not going anywhere by the trade deadline unless they get a silly offer or they're able to put him plus Hardaway plus something else together to go get a star that seems kind of unlikely. Are you worried at all about the excitement level of the trade deadline? It feels like we're hearing more and more teams are not going to try and part of that is this time of year. It behooves teams to say, oh, no, no, no, no, no. We really like this guy. We want to keep this guy for bargaining purposes, but we've heard now. I mean, we've heard the rockets are now loathed to move Eric Gordon and whether or not that's true. Again, but jaylen Brunson here, we're hearing more teams are being hesitant to move players. Like could this have a cumulative effect of being a somewhat of a disappointing trade deadline if that's the case? It could. I mean, I've seen some reporting that some teams are basically saying, hey, we're going to run with what we have. Part of that is some teams still don't entirely know who they are. Because normally it's right around Christmas and the first of the year that teams feel pretty good about all right, here's who we are. They take the next month. They work through it. And then we're at the deadline. Now this year, that process is really still happening now. For some teams, because some of these teams had a month or so from mid to late December through mid to late January, kind of wiped out with all the COVID absences and things like that. So I think that's good things a little slower to develop. Went through that whole period where basically everything went on hold because it was just going to fill out rosters with G league call ups right now. But I think it is where that period from a week to two weeks out from the deadline is. Got to get a first round pick for him. And another team says, I'm not giving you a first round pick. And then lo and behold, trade deadline week or trade deadline day. It's all right, how is two second rounders? Okay, that works. Let's go. And I think it's just we're still posturing right now. And that'll be where it will go from here..
