"You knew that that offense is going to have problems through the air. Then it started to turn on when cam started to pick it up a little bit. Things got a little bit better. Then at the very end of training camp, that summer, they started to do some of the design quarterback run stuff with can that they were going to do in the regular season. And they didn't show us a ton of it, but enough of it was there that you could surmise that they were going to do some of it. And that was when it was like, okay, well, at least they can lean on this, right? If stuff. It hits the wall, at least they can lean on this. So that was cool. But yeah, I'm all set with that training camp. Let's not do that again. We have 700 people right now. At least just on YouTube, listening to us talk about Jamar Smith. I appreciate it. I wanted to get to though. Okay. But you are going to watch to Mark Smith. I will make sure that. We're going to get you. We're going to get your Birmingham stallion test. So you can wear it during the game. Can you get me Birmingham stallion all 22? Then I'll really get into it. Honestly, these leagues want the publicity. I think they put it out. Probably reach out, right? I could probably Yeah. All right, I'm gonna hold you that. Anyway. Okay, so a couple other things happen over the weekend. I wanted to get to Jakob Johnson went on German media. Sorry. I don't speak German, so I'm using a follower of ours of the show and I thank him a lot. I Renee. He was the one that initially pointed it out to us. All of us, all the reporters on the beat kind of picked it up from Renee's Twitter and then he explained to me a little bit of translation of what exactly Jakob Johnson was talking about when he was asked..

"League year is officially upon us at 4 p.m. eastern, the calendar turned in the NFL to the 2022 season. That means that signings can now become official trades can now become official and for the Patriots, the first official free agent signing of the 2022 off season is in the books. That is defensive back, Terrence, Mitchell formerly of the Houston, Texans, a veteran corner, plays outside corner, played a lot in a zone system for levy Smith last year in Houston. Somebody that is a steady and capable veteran on the outside. I liked what I saw on tape out of him in zone. He understands route distribution. He knows where his eyes should be, you understand his roles and his responsibilities. Certainly not on JC Jackson's level, not somebody that's going to really move the needle all that much for the Patriots, but as a depth corner option, somebody that he can play on the outside, the Patriots needed somebody in this mold. And they go out and they get a guy in Terrence Mitchell that's played a lot of football in his career, but it's still only 29 years old. So this is the type of signing we were expecting for the Patriots, a lot of targets of the Patriots are going to be going after are just like Mitchell, these cost controlled veterans that were released by their prior teams doesn't affect the compensatory pick formula and is a reliable player for the Patriots in their scheme, along with Terrence Mitchell, some bad news for the Patriots on Wednesday, two more departures. This time, going to join Josh McDaniels and patriots west out in Las Vegas running back Brandon Bolden and fullback Jakob Johnson going to play with the former patriots OC with the Raiders Bolton bolster in New England really has been a consummate pro for the Patriots. One of the leaders in that locker room, somebody that has mentored young running backs like Damon Harrison Andre Stevenson and then just last season, taking over for James White and filling in admirably as the Patriots top receiving back, Bolden has done just about everything you could ask of him in the patriot system, core special teamer, reliable insurance policy on offense and a consummate pro in the locker room Bolden will be missed. It's not a catastrophic signing for the Patriots to see him go to the Raiders, but certainly somebody that has a lot of love in New England. Now, joining him with the Raiders is fullback Jakob Johnson, Johnson was not tendered by the Patriots, making him a unrestricted free agent he wasn't RFA, no RFA tender for the full back, makes him a UFA and now he is free to go sign with the Raiders. This is interesting, kind of like some of the other moves that they've made on defense. Maybe a bigger picture change going on here with the Patriots going away from a traditional fullback or potentially trying to upgrade the full back position as a receiving threat out of the backfield. That is definitely something the Patriots have looked at over the last couple of years. You have a Dan Vitale signing. You have the Dalton keen draft pick. You have Ben mason from Michigan coming in here as a practice squad player and obviously Johnny Smith, who's more of a Swiss Army knife HVAC type than a traditional inline wide tight and potentially for the Patriots moving forward. So it does sound like they're trying to get some more juice out of that fullback position and not just have it be your traditional battering ram lead blocker like we've seen with James Devlin and then Jakob Johnson, a different direction potentially for the Patriots at full back and maybe some more too tight end sets than what we saw for New England last season. Now the Patriots remain in the hunt for wide receivers inquiring just about everybody around the league still and the wide receiver market has been relatively slow and if I was a betting man, I would think the Patriots would sign at least one wider receiver before the first week of free agency ends. Obviously the big name that's still out there is Alan Robinson, the former pro bowler, but there are some others in those lower tiers at the Patriots have kicked the tires on from Travis Benjamin to Dede Westbrook to some other players that can potentially return kicks and punts as well because they also did not tender returner and wide receiver Gunnar roll chevsky officially on Wednesday. So of chevsky just like Johnson will be an unrestricted free agent as well free to sign with another team. So that's the wrap up of the Patriots news on Wednesday. We will have you covered right here on patriots press pass with any breaking news as it pertains to the.

"Okay. You know what, right now, misses Driscoll, my 9th grade English teacher is clotting her way out of the grave. She's very like there is a beehive hairdo and some bony arms we have big old flaps used to hang from. And she's get her over here. Oh, no. She died a few years ago at the age of a 123. Two roads day 30 yellow wood, misses Driscoll. You see how many of these owners did you shit bags? I'm like, all right, I'll give you an example. Cam Newton gets drafted 2011. And Jerry Richardson, the owner of the team, gives him this lecture about you're representing the team, so he don't want any tattoos and piercings and don't want to like basically just basically said, I want you to act as much like me as possible. Don't be yourself. And I was like, what? Who are you? When we find out that guy was a complete like creepy ledger's it's gone back, but he's a billionaire. And so if you go by the logic of a lot of NFL owners out of the 32 shitty people, yeah, I'm with that and probably some racist among them and whatever. But universally they want to win. If you take the same thing and apply to baseball, the best players in baseball, over the history, they weren't the best managers ever. Yeah, the best managers were the guys who sat on the bench. They were the backup catchers. And the benchwarmers, a different skill set to a different interests, I think. Well, and when it comes to coaching, again, if you get all the way to 1988, at some point, these sports would catch up as far as their personnel. I think the NFL is 61 to 70% black. Black players. That's a commensurate with whatever you want to put on in the field. But and baseball's been doing this for years and years taking people from all different countries and trying to best guy get for the job gets the job. But when it comes to managing, if you look through the list of managers, most successful managers, they largely weren't stars as players. True. That's the logic of because they play the game well that they should be able to coach it well. Yeah, but they weren't nobody was getting opportunities. That's the point. Nobody was getting the opportunity and when you look at the fact, hey, the best guys that are doing this for black, but we can't trust them to coach. It was that mindset. Same thing with quarterbacks and no black quarterbacks. It took a long time for these weird outdated. Where's the last guy the kick field goals that was black? I mean, there's a couple in the league right now, but for decade after decade after death, and what happened to fullbacks? They used to have full backs in the NFL. You know what? The passing rule opened up and somebody had to go, you're adeno wide receiver to virtually every down so you're going to get rid of, you know, my last guy was James Devlin, Jimmy neck roll. And I'm okay with Jakob Johnson, the German. I'm sure you're German audience. You have voluminous audiences. I had Michael hawley on my do your pod. That's my podcast. And everywhere you can find podcasts. I've been on that podcast. And he reminded me that we had a conversation on the air where I was like, we still on the black quarterback thing. Is that still a conversation or can we just look around the league and say there's lots of them there's lots of successful ones or are we still like judge and like, well this is a historic moment because such and such a black quarterback and he reminded me, you know it's still a conversation and he had examples of it. I'm like, because you know when the first black quarterback in the first black head coach were in the NFL. The 1920s, Fritz Pollard. Wow. Remember two years last year Belichick was wearing like a Fritz Pollard's name on his. Really? Sweatshirt or whatever? Yeah. That's the cat underpants from the 70s. Different, different person. Yeah, no. It wasn't like did you show Fritz the cat movie at the theater? They do so in every X rated movie you could have imagined at the Manchester twin cinema. New England's number one adult motion picture theater house. I'm still going to write that screenplay. I'm telling you right now there's a HBO series in this. People used to come in and say they'd say. Do you have popcorn? Of course we do it. They go. I've done a Goodfellas meets boogie nights. Yeah. Meets. It was the 70s, right? It sure was. Yeah. Well, into the 80s. It's burgundy because you were on TV at the time. That's that's my elevator private parts. You need that other element because at the same time he's doing all that he's on TV. He had a radio girl. When I replaced Howard Stern in 1980, I had that movie theater. When I went on a channel three and Hartford as the sports anchor, I had that movie theater. And it was a glorious era. Great time to be alive. And there are multiple stories. None of which there are far too long. These stories put a Debbie do in the sequel. Dallas? Yeah, this is. Oh, she did Denver. Debbie does Denver. You know what that just felt like a money grab. Nobody ever watched him. Nobody ever watched the plots didn't matter. Except for garage girls. That was a great porn flick. All the lube and stuff in it. So now, I'd like to change the subject just briefly. Have you seen the neuro commercial? Have you seen it on TV? It's on incessantly. Is that a birth control for women? I have seen the ad yes. They tend to repeat. They play the ad 15 second advertising and they play the same 15 second ad right after. It's like, did you get the message first time? No, here it is again. And they shove this norex commercial at you. Now, Scott Debbie does Dallas part two. Oh, of course. And then part three the final chapter because there was still parts of that story that they hadn't really at the time. Yeah, there were so many so many loose ends, but if you didn't see the first two no. The third one is just her career wound down as soon as she got less photogenic in the last one she did was Debbie does deely Plaza. She only won that no one ever saw. Norex. Yeah, there was a second Gutman in that one as Erika. He was on the grassy Knoll is a shooter anyway. Yeah. Well, you remember the, you remember the commercials about with Michael Jordan and Larry Bird, you know, off the backboard through the hood into the thing all these crazy shots. Do you know what Lee Harvey Oswald? Said to Michael Jordan, holy grass you know. Oh no. What did he say? He said, I thought window. Through the Knoll through the governor. Nothing but neck. I'm sorry. Back to Norwich. People on these commercials. And I'm thinking, as I'm looking at him, with all due respect, these women talking about birth control and what I'm saying, oh, I just get a sense right to my house. And she was hideous. And then the other girl, oh, the old fashioned way of getting her standing in line. And this lady had like nose rings and eyebrow rings and a hair, a bandana on and she was wearing a thick flannel shirt. I think Randy woman. So what do you need birth control for? Seriously. I mean, I know you're kidding because there she is..

"And they're not. And there's been issues on and off throughout the year that you keep kind of pointing out whether it's, you know, linebacker depth or depth in the secondary or whatever that is. A lot of things on the defense are getting exposed and the pass rush that was getting home early in the season is not getting home of late. As you said, judeo, not just bad this game, bad, just non factor the last several weeks. So what are they? Last four games, yeah. What are and it's not just sex and the pressures are just down. He's just not there. You're not hearing his name called a lot. So what are they? Defensively and offensively. What's the identity? Yeah, it's a good question. I don't think they know. And that's late to not know. That's the problem. Yeah, it is. And look, the best case scenario is that you're hoping for is that it's 2018 again, which is, you know, look, they had the disappointing loss down in Miami on the kick-off return. We know that was a fluke. You know, the kick-off return is sort of like Jakob Johnson's punt block, almost the same sort of thing. And then they went to Pittsburgh and I think they lost 14 to 7. It was really it was low scoring game. I remember Brady being really frustrated in that game. And when did the Patriots ever lose back to back December games? And we were all horrified. We didn't know what was going to happen. And then all of a sudden after that, the coaches said, you know what? We're going to stop throwing the ball so much. We're going to start running the ball using our offensive line. We're going to rely on our defense, and that's the way they won the Super Bowl. I mean, look, Brady was heroic in the fourth quarter against KC in the AFC championship game. Right. Chip game, we understand that. But largely how they were constructed or how they went forward was the running game and defense. The defense was to stand out in the Super Bowl against the rams completely shut that team down. And the problem is, is that they're a long ways from that team. You know, they did it in 2018, 2019, they fell down the stretch, the defense let the team down. We thought it was going to be the strength. Now you're wondering, is this more like 28 to 2019? And that's what it looks like. I mean, because look, John, as much as you want to criticize the offense, and if you want to look at Mac Jones stats and everybody knows how I feel about stats and the correlation to how.

"If you're entire opinion on the game of football, it's solely based on the math. I'm sorry, you don't know football. Yeah. You can use the math to inform opinions, but you'd better be able to use your own. Well, that was my home. Better be aware situationally. Yeah, that was my whole thing with the patrons getting the field goal. Because all the nerds on Twitter are saying, how do you kick a field goal there? And I'm like, have you seen the Patriots red zone off in this year? Exactly. Have you seen the Patriots red zone offense this year? It's hunter Henry and it's nobody else. They can't do anything else besides throw the ball to hunter Henry in the end zone when they get into the low red zone or high red zone. So if you watch them all year long like you and I have and all the people in the chat have and stuff like that, you would recognize that fourth and 7 for the Patriots from a fourth and goal from the 7 is I don't know, I don't have a fancy algorithm to put a percentage on it is what? Maybe a 10% play for the math itself at 9%. Yeah. So it's just such a low low percentage. I want to move off this though. I want to hit on two more things before we sign up here real quickly. But wait, I want to hear one more time. How are you feeling about the math right now? Skeptical. Punt blocks. Yes. Three of them. All righty this year, I'm incorrectly and I want to apologize to delaunay to buy. It was Jakob Johnson that missed the block on the punt block on Saturday night. Matt chatham did a great breakdown of what exactly happened that the guy right to the long snappers left and right. They kind of help the long snapper, get on his block before they go and block their own guys just because Joe cardona has got to snap the ball of his head down. So they gotta give a little forearm shiver to the guy over the long snapper to make sure that Joe cardona can get on his block. And then they get out to their block. Jakob Johnson held a little bit too long on his help, assignment, and didn't get to his real assignment. But this has happened three times now. We talked to cam accord every single week. I think cam accord is a great coach. I think he's got energy. I think he's a smart guy..

"The Patriots ability to before this game call up like Daniel ukulele or whatever that guy's name is who had a sack in this game. I had no idea who that was when he made this. Yeah. But to be able to call up a guy like that and see the game and be like, well, we're going to need more defensive linemen. Or we're going to have Michael wenu as the 6th offensive line. And we're going to be able to put Nikhil Harry in for Jacoby Myers, who Jacoby Myers couldn't block his way out of the paper bag in this game. And we're going to put Nikhil Harry in there to just be a run blocker. Like their ability to be able to shift their roster to play a game like this. Was basically anybody who ever wanted to blow anybody about Belichick and his roster construction. Why is this guy on this team? It's for a game like this. Now, do I think that these games require that you have some of the guys that he has on the roster? No, but this, you know, and so this was one game. But there's no question that the Patriots roster construction was way better than the bills. The bills couldn't really answer the Patriots their best runs came out of their tank personnel, running back, fullback, tight end, Michael wenu, and one wide receiver. I think that's right. Two tight ends, two backs and one wide receiver. And the bills, that's basically goal line offense. The bills, they couldn't field goal line defense, so they just had base personnel out there. Just by the math alone, the Patriots have a huge mass advantage. They have a huge size advantage. You know, when the safeties come up, they're going to have to take on Jakob Johnson or John Smith or Michael wenu. It's just math. And so the bills couldn't match up the Patriots won the game even before started. Belichick loves sun tzu. One of those things, the battle is won before even begins. That was an example of that. All right, the quickest three up three down we've ever done. Three up. We've talked about how he's on your list. Raman ray Steven. I thought he was tremendous. He was a freaking bowling ball in this game. He didn't, you know, it was like 23 for 78, but just he never goes down. He always falls forward. He's, you know, broken tackles all over the place. I thought he was spectacular and my third, Kyle van noy, I thought did an excellent job on the edge against Josh Allen, keeping him in the pocket. He also did a really nice job in the run game and I have to give up also for the offensive line. Minus Trent Brown and Micah winnow. I did not think that they were great. They weren't bad. They weren't great. They just weren't as good as David Anders was great, Shaq mason was great. Ted Keras was great. And Isaiah win was pretty good. I just thought those other two guys were stepped down. All right, let's look at speaking of being a step down. Let's look at the three down. Yeah, a lot of people are going to say, oh, Nikhil Harry's great blocker. Look, it's all size. It's only if you give Jacoby Myers Nikhil Harry size, he would probably be a better blocker. He was okay blocking. He also missed some blocks and, of course, the muff was the biggest thing in the game..

"De Kwan Jones in the middle of the defense and try to get it out on the edge. I think they're gonna have some opportunities to run the football in this game against Carolina and then you integrate some play actions and shore passes quick throws, get the ball out, all those types of things. And you could probably you can score against this defense. It's a good defense. It's 8th in the league and they have an amazing pass for us for their fourth in the league and pressure rate, fourth and sacks, both those guys burns and Reddick and really get after it. But I think there are a lot of ways that this matchup is not terrible for the Patriots. If they do go with some Jakob Johnson or like you said two tight ends, put some bigger personnel on the field and try to be the more physical team. I think that there is that option there against this Carolina defense. To the Panthers offense. And now the exciting part for the show begins for Alex bars because your boy, PJ walker is going to have a chance to start in this game. It sounds like Alex Sam darnold, Mikey already reported earlier today that the right shoulder injury is just as much a problem as the concussion is for Sam darnold. So I mean, he got brought to you, you saw that hit last week, great. Oh, you got it. Yeah. Yeah. Very limited by both injuries. It sounds like through the first two days of practice for the Panthers, PJ walker has been taking first team reps been preparing as the starter all week long. So it sounds like it's gonna be PJ and the first thing that I'll say and then we do have some plays in the vault for PJ walker but the first thing I'm gonna say is you can't let PJ walker is mobility and athleticism take you by surprise. And not that they weren't going to coach it and they're not going to game plan for it and all that kind of stuff. But we have seen in the past that even when they coach it, even when the game plan for it, guys like deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, cam back in Kara is Carolina days. Those players have given this defense.

"Can I get a quick thought from you kind of take it off the rails, but a quick thought before we move on because patriots worked out their third corner of the week per my grief, DJ Hayden. How do you feel about that? How do you feel about it? That means a veteran. I think Brian Poole might be a better fit for what they do. Brian pool is a guy that plays inside, plays a man to man. There are clearly doing their due diligence on these corners because John Jones might be out for longer than they, I'm actually wouldn't be surprised if we find out here shortly to Jonathan Jones going on IR for at least short term IR, right? They're clearly doing some due diligence to make sure that they have some veteran corners that maybe they can bring in and sign if Jonathan Jones doesn't end up coming back quickly. So I don't hate it. I also got a thing that they are completely out on juwan Williams after what they saw as good as I meant to say this before, if he's a healthy scratch this week. I mean, that's it, it's over. Yeah. So that's how that feels. I think more on the offensive side of the football, not really. I guess from Andre Stevenson, are we going to keep seeing him in the passing game or going to see more of him in the passing game, made some nice grabs last week against Dallas, the one pass protection rep that he got wasn't pretty, but the rest of it was pretty good. Yeah, I mean, you know, I think by default he has to to me the bigger question is is this the week that all four running backs are finally active? Is this so we see him and Taylor both on the game day roster? It's kind of raw mat and I don't know. I mean, it probably should be. But last week probably should have been two and it didn't happen. Your point about Jakob Johnson and it is nothing against Jakob Johnson, but it's getting interesting. Last week they used him a lot more because they came out early in the game and that 22 personnel package and they used him a ton. But if you're gonna have Jakob Johnson being a game day active every single week, he should have a bigger role. I'm game day, and I have to look it up. I'm not sure how much special teams he's playing. He might have a pretty big role in the kicking game, and that might be part of it..

"Tons of throws to Kyle Pitts. He had a huge game pits did. So we'll see. This jets defense doesn't scare me outside of Franklin Myers a whole lot, but it's a sound scheme. They know what they're doing defensively in terms of what their assignments are or now into week 6 of the season. So maybe the Jets have a better feel for what they're going to do out there. They did a pretty good job. The first time around against the Patriots, what do you feel about this tight end duo? Because I've talked about this a little bit this week. I think it's really important to talk about how Johnny Smith currently is being used in this patriots offense because to me, out of all the things wrong with the Patriots offense in the past and all these types of things that we've talked about with play calling and McDaniels and fork down decisions. One of the more head scratching things is the lack of Johnny smith's involvement in the passing game. This season so far, Johnny Smith has only run a pass route on 38% of the Patriots passing place. So essentially he is a glorified blocking tight end right now for New England. And that's not what they paid him $13 million in $30 million guaranteed to be. They thought this guy was going to come in and make plays in the passing game. Yeah, I mean, you know, to go to the extreme comparison, it's not quite this. They basically turned him into Dwayne out. Yeah, he's a better way now. I actually ran Allen right now. And I thought Dwayne Allen played an important role for this team. He was an excellent run blocker. He was a key part of that that run in 2018. He certainly was. But that's not what John Smith should be. Now, you can look at this in two ways. Is that just how they're going to use it? Remember, we talked about this when we signed him. And it's something I talk about all the time. It's one of my core beliefs in evaluating football, talent can only go so far, usage is a big part of it. If you ask a guy to do things he can't do or you don't have a player play to his strengths, he's not going to look his talents as he ultimately it is not going to look as talented as he ultimately as I call it, didn't kill Harry paradox. So is this their plan for John Smith? We've seen the misused players before. I don't think so. That would be such a monumental miss. I mean, it would be a miss on a like exponential level compared to what they've done. The other way I look at it is, will the offensive line sucked? The offensive line is sucked in I would agree with this one of the most I would agree with what you're about to say. If they were using Johnny Smith to block and passing situations more than they are. Last week against Dallas, Johnny Smith only had one rep as a pass blocker. So if you're saying, okay, they're just leaving him in their blocking with 6 instead of 5 guys, then I would understand where you're going with that, but they're not doing that. That frequently. Well, I think it applies to both, right? It's not like the offensive line has been great to see against the run either, especially the tackles. Sure. So it may be that, you know, they feel like they need to compensate for poor tackle play. And this is just the best way they can do it. Now, they kept the uncle Johnson on the roster. Nothing against Jakob Johnson..

"'cause right now you don't know Jakob Johnson in the backfield or Johnny Smith in the backfield. I'm talking about Johnny in the backfield. Okay. Because he did it once last week, one play they did it. So, to me, and the challenge is obviously that John is going to need a crash course in blitz pick up from a running back perspective, right? Which is, that's hard, especially against a team like Tampa. That is extremely difficult to come in first game and throw them out there and have them pick up blitzes from the backfield. But first and foremost, Jakob Johnson, they tried to put him in that role some last week and he did not do particularly well, picking up blitzes in butts for protection. He was as big of a problem as anybody else in blitz pickup. I think PFF gave him like a 2.3 grade in past protection or something crazy like that. So on top of the fact that Johnny Smith has experience playing out of the backfield in his past stops in a little bit so far with the Patriots in camp and a couple of times in games. He is definitely a sturdier option in terms of taking on blitzing linebackers and DBs to be able to pass protective. We know he's a good run blocker. And maybe that can unlock him a little bit in terms of just scheme versatility as well, throwing him swing passes, screens, little end arounds, you know, handoffs, tossed his things like that, right? Like other ways to get Johnny Smith the ball in space. Maybe you can present themselves out of the backfield. So, in my mind, I don't know. I think that's not a terrible idea. I don't think it's a terrible idea. They should have been doing it from the beginning because it just makes them more creative in the passing game. Yeah. I agree, but I think we can maybe hope that that is going to come along and I said in a couple different places that the Patriots 11 personnel package with the Kendrick Bourne Jacoby Myers and Nelson Aguilar on the field together is far more productive right now than 12 personnel is for them. And if you're not going to have James White now moving forward, I want to see what is it, I guess O2 personnel, right? No running backs. Yeah, they did that once last week. So give me, give me the three receivers with hunter Henry and Johnny Smith and zero backs and put John who in the backfield. I think that that's really the answer in passing situations for this team because Brandon Bolden is a liability. JJ Taylor and reminder Stevenson they obviously don't feel they're ready. So what are we doing? Give me the O2 personnel and get me Johnny Smith as an HVAC pass protector slash running routes out of the backfield. Thoughts. I said that they signed him that they should be using Johnny Smith out of the backfield to begin with. This.

"I don't know if I mentioned it, but the Patriots had nobody claimed on waivers that they released yesterday. So everybody cleared waivers for the Patriots in terms of the guys that had to go through the waiver process. So everyone was an option for the Patriots to resign on the practice squad. So we'll get to some of the players that they were able to bring back. But was Ben mason the most predictable signing that we also seen coming because this was fascinating. Now, Ian rapid board said that the Patriots are signing Ben mason under the impression at least what has it was presented to rap sheet to quickly elevate him to the 53 man roster when a roster spot becomes available. So first and foremost, what do you think about them getting Ben mason here in the vault? As soon as I saw Ben mason was waved yesterday, I thought that my ears perked up, right? I thought this would be a possibility. But now it sounds like Ben mason has a legitimate chance to knock Jakob Johnson off the roster. And then they're gonna carry two fullbacks. Which they might. You know, we went from I was sitting here saying they're not gonna carry a fullback to, you know, maybe you go 22 personnel two tight ends two fullbacks and you just push your way down the field, I guess. I don't know. It's interesting. I think the nature of the fullback position is highly physical. And I think it's a spot that you just, you know, you want that depth, right? You want that extra depth. Because, you know, we remember what happened when James Devlin went down and then Jakob Johnson got hurt shortly after as a rookie and they really didn't have anybody for that role. So they have some more depth there now. I also wonder if it's maybe a thing where he's gonna be elevated quickly then sent back, maybe hunter Henry's not ready to go and Matt lacosse isn't ready to go instead of adding another tight end. You're just kind of used him as essentially a blocking tight end mason and you put him on the line of scrim. He put Johnson on the line of scrimmage and Nathan is the fullback..

"Okay, so I guess I could see that in theory because not every single team that uses a fullback, right? So there's only ten to 12 teams maybe that roster, a fullback, but a lot of those teams already have a fullback in-house that they really like. So they would have to put that guy and bring in yakub Johnson. To me, the other element of it too I believe in the language is kind of weird, but I believe if another team was about to offer him the Patriots could swoop in and protect him with the international pathway designation. So he wouldn't be eligible to play this year, but they wouldn't lose them. Like, I think that there's a way that no matter what happens, they don't lose them. It might turn into he can't play this here, but they can keep him around no matter what. So the tough part that I have with Jakob Johnson cutting Jakob Johnson is we've talked so much about how important the full back position is, and he's a good lead blocker. He's a solid he does. He's not James Devlin, but he's very good at what he does, exactly. And with life without hunter Henry this summer has hit with the Patriots, especially if it's going to be Cam Newton at quarterback 21 personnel is going to be a part of this offense, right? They're going to need a fullback in this offense. If they're not going to be able to go full 12 all the time because Johnny was nicked up or hunter Henry's nicked up and those guys are gonna miss games. When those guys miss games and they only have one true tight end that they want to use regularly, whether it's Johnny or hunter Henry, they're going to go 21 days. That's going to be first quarter first drive opening drive. It's going to be Jakob Johnson and Damien Harris down your throats. And they lose that entire element if they go that direction, could Devin osteo or Johnny Smith or 6th offensive lineman, recreate the fullback position. We've talked about linebackers, potentially playing fullback or whatever the case may be, right? Right. They could technically recreate it, but he's really good at what he does. Jakob Johnson. And we've seen with cam last night, tons of 21 personnel, right? Fullback lead, fullback draw, all these types of plays with the Jacob involved. So I find it hard to believe that they're going to walk away from the full back because it's just too it's too consistent of an offense for them. And then you have to put into that also that hunter Henry and Johnny Smith might need to be managed and I don't know. All the snaps being 12 personnel might not be as much of a thing as we thought it was a couple of weeks ago or a couple of months ago. Look, I didn't love leaving Jakob Johnson off. He was my 54th guy. I could be convinced that did he stay..

"Make a bet on the Thursday, September 9th, open air between the Super Bowl champion Buccaneers and the Dallas Cowboys. And if you lose, you're a wager will be refunded up to $25 for new customers only when signing up and use the promo code. NFL 100. Hello, everybody happy Monday and welcome into a new patriots beat podcast here. Alongside me, as always, Alex barth, I'm Evan Lazar. And today we are going to do a live in the moment 53 man roster projection. We're going to get to that in just a few minutes here. We're going to take you through every single position on the pads roster and break it down. Who he thinks is going to make the cut. We think is on the bubble, who we think might get traded. And from that point on, we'll go all the way through all 79 players currently there are 80 players under contract that you count Jakob Johnson, but he still has a roster exemption that's a whole another conversation for another day with Miguel benzon and he can explain to us when all of the deadlines are for that. But I wanted to start first and foremost with an opening thought Alex from the both of us on last night's preseason finale against the Giants. For me, I thought it was another performance from Mac Jones where we learned a lot about the Patriots rookie. It wasn't all perfect, right? There was some instances for Mac Jones held onto the football for far too long. His time to throw as well above three seconds, which typically Mac has a very quick release in the first two seasons in games, a very quick release. In this game, not so much. We also learned a lot about the front 7 Joshua J, certainly a player that is just continues to be on the rise for the Patriots. But the one thing I wanted to mention, I just tweeted it out a few minutes ago that I thought was noteworthy. Whether it was by design, whether it was Bill Belichick asking Joe judge to do him a favor and throw some zero blitzes at the Patriots quarterbacks last night. The Giants actually blitzed the Patriots QBs last night against the eagles, eagles didn't blitz Mac Jones or Cam Newton a single time. Zero blitzes. Last decade blitz cam and max 7 times and there was that play on second down on cam's first drive where they got two unblocked rushers to the quarterback got right through and pressure to throw away by Cam Newton. Mac Jones got bailed out on a defensive holding call in the secondary on another zero blitz or was a jailbreak and all outputs and nobody, they weren't able to block everybody up. The Patriots was 13 days now, have a showdown in the season opener with Brian Flores in the Miami Dolphins. And we know that B flow is going to bring the house. No matter who's at quarterback for the Patriots or who's that quarterback for the opposing team in general, Brian Flores absolutely loves to blitz, right? He was. He loves me amoeba fronts. He loves all of those types of things. So getting those down and getting that communication down, hopefully the Patriots will have David Andrews back in the fold..

"I I thought he was a guy who was really set to make a jump again that running back in the second year, he has some familiarity and I don't know that he's pause, he struggled on special teams. He's dropped three or four punts and, you know, that's something they're looking at. And again, with the running back room. So crowded Brandon, Bolden off to the great start that he's off to write down your new with JJ Taylor. I don't know, I I'm not ready to take them off the team just yet, but I'm I'm in there if he doesn't he doesn't go out and against Washington or Philly or one of these preseason games or maybe joint practices. I don't know. You definitely has not looked what I what either of us were expect like, you know, we really thought that he would have a huge camp and he definitely has not, I don't know that are running back over takes off Brandon bolden's been good but I think he was going to make the team either way. But you look at a guy like Rashad Barry who's contributing on special jobs and has had a great start. As a pass-rusher. Christian Wilkerson who again is a special teams contributor dead. If they want to keep an extra safety on the Ross talking, it I was actually thinking not to cut you off, but I was actually cuz we're going to talk about this position group, Nick Jakob Johnson, right? So that's another one. So that's the idea that six running backs is Ally. Yeah, modified spot space to keep an extra guy know the position you're going to go right to those six running backs. I had six coming in on my roster projection, becoming very very tough to justify that right now not that Taylor has been that bad but you have other guys like very like Wilkerson kind of coming out of nowhere and surprising and it you know he gotta get that wrong spot from somewhere. And again 6 running backs is especially if you're going to keep five wide receivers. If you want to keep you active Johnson and then that's essentially for tight ends. You're going to keep 16 skill position players, you're going to make almost a quarter. Your roster come from three positions. That that's a lot. That's a lot. Yeah, I agree. All right, let's talk about those tight ends. And fullbacks. We're going to talk about the virus humor. For two in a second. I don't think there's much to say about Johnny and Hunter Henry other than they've both practiced pretty much as advertised so far but Johnny Smith in particular. That guy is a beast. Like he is an explosive, a thing is huge. He's a great run-blocker, he's extremely versatile. I was kind of bullish early on on Hunter Henry and I think a big reason why is cuz they were working. So heavy in the Red Zone towards the beginning of training camp now that they've sort of gotten into the Run game stuff and got into the open field and, and played a little bit more between the twenties. John is Smith's just versatility, and, and just kind of ability to do everything, well, like he does everything. Well, it only thing that maybe you can say that he needs to fine-tune just a little bit. Is his downfield routing but he's explosive enough that he's able to still get open on more simplified route trees, right? Like crossers and and stuff like that or shall crossers, she's been great on. He is a dog..

"I'm just going through something Players that maybe we didn't hit on, we can do a show at some point where we just allow you guys to Rapid Fire put names in the chat and we'll just rattle off our takes on every single player that you guys want to talk about and not a, I thought it would be a bigger Jakob Johnson day today. Not not not a huge Jakob Johnson day, but he's definitely not done anything to, you know, lose his job or anything like that, you know. It's really going to come down to sort of a numbers thing. I would say with him and in a stylistic thing, more is more show. What I write tomorrow night, Alex in stadium, practice at 6:00 National. That's what we need to talk about from today's practice. Can I have men in here because Nick Folk was not at practice, Nick Folk was not a practice, we got our first extended, look at Quinn, Nordin, a, what you think, 648? He did click one in, he had a kick blocked by Matthew judon. Which by the way? Matthew judon with a kick block, have a nice Matthew judon. He's been excellent. I wasn't dead. Wowed, we know what the light power is, and it was on display, but the accuracies got to come along that being said, he's getting better. I think he's getting better. He was really all over the place when he started and in the spring. And now you know it either goes through a dozen close only counts in horseshoes. Like he is raining in a little bit and that's encouraging. So, you know, we'll see you tomorrow. We'll see if Nick folks back tomorrow, whatever the case may be, but we're going to get a good look at, we're going to get, I think our best. Look at North, we had a good look at nordine today. We're going to get our best look at him so far tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow night off season ticket holders, Foxboro residence, I'm pretty sure that's still what it is even in these covid-19 and then general public on Tuesday Tuesday..

"If he doesn't want to sit out the year and he thinks song Cosign and play somewhere else. You do kind of have to let him go. But you know, if he says yeah you know like being a patriot and maybe there's not a huge market for fullbacks, which there usually isn't. Then maybe he said, you know, that works for me still getting paid all that, you know, he gets to hang out around the team still. And then you revisit again next year, it's possible. I understand people's cuz I I believe in my life last roster production, I had Jakob Johnson off the team and I got a lot of pushback from people about that, right. Because he has been a good player in his role for the Patriots last year, but it just kind of feels to me like that. Full bad position is unless he's doing some other things, whether it's a kicking game potentially or whatever you can do. Yeah, he's not make himself valuable, somehow get Beyond just being that lead blocker cuz there's just not going to be the Reps there to Warrant carry that but carrying that player like you said you put one of the tight ends back there. You put one in the offensive lineman backyard. Heck you could put one of the defense of life Back there in a goal-line situation and and, and do it that way, my grave. Well played fullback for the Patriots, you know, Atlanta Rob played fullback for the Patriots. So there's all sorts of possibilities if they really need to get rid of full back on the field and they don't have Jakob Johnson Rossford is he valuable enough to make the team. Let's jump back over to the wide receivers some of these depth wide receivers..

"He was southbound free agency to come over and be that athletic fullback. He opted out never played. I think he retired I think he might have retired this offseason I think that. Yeah and that's so that leaves you with Jakob Johnson who we all love, who know, you know, we all know, he hits the whole heart and blows people up and I love I love the guy and I think there's a value that I think that the Patriots always like that but Considering where they are this year with Titans. You still have Devin asiasi, you might have Matt lacosse for how long. When when it comes to configuring a roster. Can you just call this Dalton Keen? Still have a place on this roster? I entered when they drafted him. He did. But has the has the math changed because of what they want to do at fullback and I think it's a liquid, your question. And, you know, so the Troy Brown, they're crazy world of Troy Brown. My my question and commentary about that. Wasn't about dog. I think he has the potential to be good player. I also like this College film. I think that he has a chance to be sort of like a modern-day crash. Jim Jensen, who was one of my favorite dolphins, growing up dead but my question was more about have the have the Patriots out of necessity? Change the, the direction of their offense and does Dalton Keen still fit into that. And I think it's, I think it's a legit question. And I think it's going to be a question that goes on all the way through training came down to Final Cut Downs, where the Patriots say, they look at the math and they're just like, all right, well how many wide receivers are we taking more importantly, how many tight ends slash full box? Are we taking? I mean, if if you're going Johnny Smith, founder Henry and say, Devin asiasi because I think what we saw in the off-season practices LED you to believe, okay, there might be something there. So those three Place Johnson that's for Dalton Keene is going to be a v, like really does he do enough, is he going to do enough? Is he going to be good enough to get on the field in that Kyle, you check roll this year back to earn a roster spot. I just have a lot of questions about that. So I thought it was a legitimate question. I'm not saying I had the answers, but I think I think his roster spot is definitely up for grabs wage on. What happens with injuries direction of the offense, once we get the camp. Yeah, I wouldn't call him a big Adelman but I like, I like him. You like him. This Podcast Thursday, we are both fans of Dalton Keen. We think he can fit as an h-back, if the patriots feel like they have a spot for him, I think he could add to this team. But as you said, it's a numbers game. And when you bring in the title, wage brought in the receivers, they brought in, it gets a little tougher to make the team. That's just kind of the nature of the game. I hope they hold onto him, I hope they find a way because as the crazy world of Troy birth, John pointed out.
