"I don't know how you fix it. I mean like people. Can you know all they've got to make changes while you've got the same players you're not trading those players. You're not changing those players. How can those players be better more consistently even their own team. Says the same thing. Jake muslim who. I a feel or sense of moslem that. There's there's not a lot of bullshit jake. Muhsin agreed and so he said at the beginning of the year we we've learned a to be a little more mature in our game. Yeah well right now. They need to stick their noses in. They need to get their hands dirty because they may think they are. They're not san. Jose deserved the win. The other night they played the night before and montreal. Toronto had four days off five days off. They should toronto. Should've skated those guys into the ice. And it didn't happen and not much is happening throughout that lineup. With the exception. I mean michael hutchinson and his game wasn't very good right now. They've got the injury maroshek. Sounds like he's getting healthy. Jack campbell for the most part is has been fine if not better than fine but then you look at the defense. You mentioned muhsin david camp. Who's a real good defensive forward. His numbers aren't good defensively. Their power play isn't like you're the coach your sheldon keefe. You're looking at it. Gone aside from juggling that lineup. Where do you start. Just start with the power play and say okay. It's been it's been five games but really it's been two games. Yeah i've been six games. It's been two games because matthew knives visas about but everybody's hung up on the setup whether mourner belongs in the middle or on the wing against san. Jose couldn't get in the zone right no matter what your setup is. They couldn't get in the zone so they're not sharp. They're not right. Some of it can be cured with with a little bit more as we used to. Call a little as my dad. You say a little more elbow grease right like you get you get to work here. All all throw allies patterson from the connection. That's too there are times when a player thinks they're working hard enough and they're not like pederson says. Yeah my game's not right yet and you know what think back to his first year. How many times did you see him. Just tenaciously winning pocket. Back as an always on the puck like pavel data. Klay there right now. He may think he's doing it. he's not in. Toronto is not committed enough to get themselves over the hump to let their talent takeover. They're not yet and they better get there quick. Yeah agreed likewise with the chicago. Blackhawks this imprint. They're they're not but that's the way it appears. And i didn't think that they were going to make great strides. But i did feel that they were going to be better. And maybe that was putting too much stock. And bringing in seth jones and marc andre fleury and of course jon tapes being back on the ice leadership role and being healthy again. That's just a great. Nhl story but it just it. It feels like they're coming apart at the seams with that organization. Like on and off the ice while i was there for was there tuesday. I guess now and it was their home opener. They were playing the islanders. They played a good thirty minutes really good thirty minutes and then they just fell apart in their start. One in five their minus fifteen in goals like that is a debacle. Mine is so..

"You know. Is there anybody on this kings roster. That's better than like clearly. Better than jake muhsin or tyler to fully or alec martinez or like the kings got rid of some really good players over the last couple of years And it just goes to show you. I don't say this to to argue the point that this king's rosser is better as just. The idea of better is so much more complicated than just. Philip now is better than you know. Jeff carter at this point in his career or you know or a player but you know aid. A player comparison right. It's all about fit and chemistry and attitude and mindset where players are in their career. And so i'm. I'm hoping that it's correct. I'm hoping that this king's rosser is in fact significantly better than in passers honesty. The the eighteen nineteen doesn't matter anymore. You know hundred dollars. Paris into that team. It's a comparison to your holiday. How game fifty six was last year versus game one this year and honestly you know those are all really could players that you named their stanley cup champion there. Nhl contributor in their new homes but the the record after those those individuals left wasn't any worse than it was when they you're right eighteen nineteen to nineteen twenty was almost identical in terms of winning percentage overall And i think that now you look where the kings were last year. They didn't really add any big pieces over the last two years now. They've added the pieces that on paper make this team. Look better. you get the goalscoring arvidsson you get the clear number two center into no y- adds more experience on the blue line and then what will ultimately continue to drive that you kind of know what those guys are. But the other question is is two thousand. Twenty one twenty two. Mikey anderson better than two thousand twenty twenty one mike anderson which is the other part that you don't really discuss right. It's the need for internal improvements Nausea really good points so we only have two preseason games by which to judge whether or not the team is better than it wasn't of course the lineups for both those games will not be the lineups in the regular season. But they play up in a in arizona on monday. Played in san jose on tuesday Wildly different outcomes in both games. But i think based on what we heard from todd mclellan. I feel like the coaching staff was happy with both efforts. Yeah he seemed to in yaba. His indicated there are different games which arizona game a little bit more tighter checking the funny thing he said was it was either tighter checking or worsely executed which is kind of funny when he put it like that but the the moral of the story was a lot more open on tuesday in san jose a lot more chances law broadband russia's which was evident by the four to three score as opposed to two one on monday Know the kings played a very solid forty minutes yesterday or yesterday against san jose..

"Welcome once again to thirty two thoughts. The podcast geoff merrick long said elliot friedman elliot before we get into a lot of news. We'd like to send our support to jalen smerek. Yeah for those of you. Who didn't see it. Jalen america player. He's from michigan but he played in the ontario hockey league and he plays in the ukrainian hockey league and he was the victim of a brutal gesture during a game on sunday. And i think a lot of us are waiting to see what exactly is done with this. Is there a suspension. And i don't even want to describe it. Say what happens. It's so bad. I don't want to give any heir to that but you know we just want to say we support them and we hope the penalty and the punishment is severe because it needs to be nice player. I watched a couple of games playing with the oshawa generals when he was there one maybe two years in the oh l. and yes to your point full support to jalen smerek things to get to on today's podcast. We're going to go over. So michael stuff Hughes pederson ca chuck. That's on the board. Should mention and have a discussion about john ferguson. In arizona the new jersey unvaccinated players news at a saint louis. But i all or nothing. The toronto maple leafs piece put together by amazon. I'm about thirty minutes shy of completing it. Have you seen the whole thing. Well first of all jeff. If you're not going to finish your homework before the podcast. It's thirty minutes shy and all. That's lame lame. It's like you're not almost pregnant. You're either pregnant or you're not pregnant. I know what happened. Last season is no no big grand. Reveal at the end. I it's funny you say that because did you get your preview on friday. Got okay so. I got to and they said you know. You can't say anything about it until after midnight on monday. So even though we're taping this on sunday night. It won't be dropped until monday morning and i was saying to someone. What am i allowed to say here and their answer was well. It's not like this is a movie. You're not spoiling the ending. Everybody knows exactly what's going to happen so you're pretty safe to say what you need to say. Wait a minute wayne. Simmons broke his hand in that game against vancouver had no idea so here comes first of all. I thought it was great. I think if you're a fan and not as necessarily a hockey fan but a fan of drama. I think it's really good. I think you're going to enjoy it. The access was excellent. There were a lot of things there that i thought were really good sheldon keefe. Speaking to them and sheldon. Keefe i think is the who's going to be quote unquote the star of the series. But if you listen to his speech going into overtime of game six. Jason spats is speech after forty minutes of game seven. There's an exchange between joe thornton and nikki lers and you don't really hear what healer says because he isn't mike but you sure hear with thornton has say it's really something. As a matter of fact. I i think some of the moments that stood out to me where players getting treatment right after they got hurt. You know jake muhsin gets cut in the face and you see them working on him and the players reaction to him. That really stood out to me too. But it's kind of a small thing in the overall picture. I really thought it was excellent. You know there are a couple of things. I'd like to talk about further but jeff. What was your overall reaction to it. So there's a couple of things first of all it's really well done. it's so well produced it's real slick. It's easy to follow. I think you're right. I think the sheldon keefe comes out as a star. Man is a salty tongue. I was i thought i swore a lot. No sir my son. I was watching this out loud and my son who's knows what bad words are. He's almost ten whenever i do that. He says daddy said a bad word. And i know okay time to be quiet so sheldon this fly. Kief is flying crying. He's a man said a bad word vance at a bad word. I better put my ear buds in because this is going to be endless as watching the last part with my son. Tj and he's like coach like swear a lot. Hey i'm like yeah you're coaches. Swear a lot and he says not this much but yeah they do. This is nothing new dad. There's a couple of things in here. The gionta veras injuring game. Want against montreal the audio and the scene of him sort of coming to and screaming as almost like he's trying to get everyone away from him or off of him is kind of harrowing as was who was around him. We'll simmons and hyman thornton. Simmons were saying john john try. That was that was. That was a chilling part of it. I'll tell you what it was. Hilarious was the scene where joe thornton driving in his car and brian brooks on hockey central. Yes talking about how. The leafs didn't need to spend their last money on joe. I thought that was great That was a real nice touch. I thought the talk of sheldon keefe talking to jimmy. Vc and kyle dubus talking to jimmy v. c. when he puts him on waivers essentially asking him the same question which is who are you like. What kind of player are you going to be here. I thought that was really profound putting him on waivers. I mean that was that was an interesting What would happen but that was an interesting couple of scenes. One thing and this is tiny but whenever we see pieces like this about nhl teams. I always think of okay. How is this going to be different than the original. Hbo twenty four seven road to the winter classic. And you want to hear my big huge takeaway from this versus the hbo. Twenty four seven piece in washington capitals versus the pittsburgh penguins. Kyle has a better slapshot than dan..

"Try not. I knew it was gonna work out. I knew going to work out. I think it gets emotional. People say it's business but it's not. It's it's personal. I think you know. But i know joe at the end of the day really wanted to resign. Gabe man. i know gave on to stay. And i knew they figure it out. I think at the end of the day. Joe wasn't letting gave leave and i know gabe didn't wanna leave. But i was definitely supportive of gabe staying. That's for sure was very supportive. He's i mean he's one of our favorite players to watch a spectacular and sneaky. Tough to a lot of people that are are are finding out. How much does he make. What's that they're finding out with their face. Yes i'm sure brayden schenn's think twice now but actually when i enjoy in junior som- because you're a chr guys Really as a rookie. Handed the jake muhsin in a kitchen or hussein. Ask him but that was a rookie. Someone's going to run at one of the rangers players. And i might have been his first fight. I know was getting asked about that when the avalanche play toronto next year. And you went right. Muslim was like one of the toughest guys in the. Oh l. at that point. Everyone's like landis guy's gonna get it and he did more than all right man shelled. But how much does he make that line work. You're a rhinoceros. oh delay. you're one of those players in the nhl like it must be a nice feeling like whatever you want to do. You can do and you go and do it. But how much does cog make that line work. He's she's huge. I think just even defensively a lot of times. He'll back i. And i'm i'll played his wing or whatever but he's just such a power forward not just for a line but i mean he's the leader of our team as well he just kind of makes everything tick and You know for meco meco kind of has easier time. When games on the icy does a lot of the dirty work goes the net net presence. He's always get hit with pox and getting cross-checked in fron does a lot of stuff. No one wants to do. They make a lot of that too and gives me a lot of room to kinda you know. Play little higher plan the outside a little bit more and chase down. Pucks outweigh no. You're very high standards for yourself. What did you think after this year like. What did you work on the summer. Like do you ever go back and watch the vegas series or anything like that. No i don't need to as more of a mental thing than actual physical thing. I think for us and for me to we got a little hesitant you know. I think we beat them in game two but they dominate us in the second third And i remember thinking like oh like i remember talking on the plane like in our whole thing is the process like be good in the process. Results will take care of themselves a whole year. That's kind of our thing and it still is in the process. That game is so bad but we still wanna not meco.

"Management off over. I know i don't wanna raft and other defensemen like why waste my time controversial. But now i don't understand. I thought that with what you're saying. No offense resigned bro. What is going. I don't understand this chat right. I really don't wanna is like lost completely about what they're saying. I'm lost now. Because i just don't understand but i could just be stupid. I think i'm just stupid. Whatever i'm going to do a homer peck fuck your head. I can't steal it then. I wanna we l. I wanna stay though. None of them. If you want. that's fine. I just feel like he's the best defenseman in there. I love polack. But so well. I pull off last year. So i'm going. I love you paulie but all right so now our last pick last round. Oh yes through this last route. Sixteen last pick. What i wanna run. Ooh house had at home last year. I know who i'm going. Where and i know. You're not talk. Damn bro raising machine in my head really. Yeah i got bullet in the head. One bullet in the head tattoo ran on saturday. No no i want. Somebody like getting shot from behind with like it's political. Let me stop on podcast. Even though are opening song when their songs era okay. I know. I know going with dr steele well. I don't know who you're thinking about not going to snitch myself here. There's a lot of. Oh what fuck. I'm gonna wait till you draft o- o- really know chef tony the angela. I know you're gonna shut up. Don't say any who just kidding got two forwards on the mind shoulder. I got to focus on. I don't you have don't you only have events. I filled up defense. But i don't wanna i don't wanna rather my bench be all forwards. Gmi bunches for than one goalie. Give a goalie on your bench So you have three I know i know. I kind of realized i last season. I kind kinda got fucked. You know i'm gonna go matthias known a- but either one of these guys can be easy trade bait jacob through all know albertino. That's fine. that's fine. Yeah all right. So tell her to. Fully or mike hoffman same team. Mike hoffman. i think is going to have more of a role there. Yeah we're going to mike hoffman. I know i probably would've goaltender. But i like that idea going. I think i think that's it. That's it So i yeah. That's it we're waiting for the last auto draft pick. I wonder what's gonna be going to be. This is our mock draft by the way guys. We drafting a last. That's actually solid. Yes definitely solid tyler. Left's peace tyler Like like he's listening but so yeah that's it. There's there's some other players that well so there's some players left to build. I wish go over really quick Abandoned cain for obvious reasons. Then then there's Towered fully though. Shana vish house caloric bathrooms and claw drew and jordan stalled. Every left also jonathan tapes. I feel like well however hagi two. That's nuts teaser. I was thinking about on. Only because i feel like he's probably criminally underrated right now especially because he miss the the because he missed a year so i think that his is actually technically going to be a lot higher than where he is right now. The only thing is i feel like my coffin is going to have a really good role with montreal so i didn't go with him. Those are two. Oh enter fully talking about two. Yeah true so why. Don't you read off your team. My team real fast special ho embark of our my to starting centers. Technically chuck faulk coach. Coach cutch okay. Kuchar matthew my first left-winger have sam bennett nikita kucherov. He was My first overall. Pick on nick ziggy as well. In the right wing. Feel like those are two solid. He could play centers. Well my defensemen. I have eric blad morgan riley. Jake muhsin to fucking toronto defensemen. That's not smart Oliver adam larsson Vancouver hopefully he produces points. My bench is blake wheeler anders. Lee patrick line. A mike hoffman michael. Uc sorrows and thatcher. Snatcher co what about branch bench around okay. Sorry i'm no. It's okay all right through it. So i like it. Yeah i definitely like my team Brayden point at least pederson asthma centers. I've andre especially common nikolai ears as my left-wingers mar nanas and co caufield. As right wingers the my defenseman. I've out potential. O'shea theodore vegas defenseman. Oh actually three baseman. So i feel okay. I lo- theodore martinez. Oto drafts under d only Martinez okay martinez was my auto draft on defense. I had a forward auto lock in william knee lender. You know what jake muslim might have. Been my fucking auto I don't remember picking.

"Spot for the right things. Each and every night longtime listeners of all the king's men will be familiar with the phrase. happiness is measured by expectation. we say it all the time We try and keep our expectations measured. I think no player Is a more perfect. Fit for that phrase in adrian campaign because it feels like he's only twenty four He's about to turn twenty five in september but to me there's no player who seems to suffer negative criticism based on outside expectations than adrian. You know they come in plays second line center minutes in a season where jeff carter's than people want him to they keep trying to make him a second line center. It feels like to me. And then finally. Last season he winds up On third line left wing with blake szott wagner and they don't score goals but they dominate puck possession. Time you and. I've had many conversations about why that line seems to be the fit for adrian campaign and and i had sort of fallen in line with a group of people that thought that it was because he was finally moved to left wing. But you made the observation. That i thought was really fascinating which was on a with Late lozad in austin wagner. Adrian campaign is the veteran and he's not deferring his game to his linemates he's leading the line But then this season we go back to sort of moving him around. He's playing with copa. He's playing with velocity. Sometimes he's playing up and down the lineup. So all of that rambling is just a way to to ask you. What did you see different in this season from cambay then from the previous season i think this year there was definitely Points in the season and again it was the inconsistency that you know that always puzzles everybody. There was definitely more of an alpha dominant role by campaign that he took games over. He was a guy he wanted to You know at the you know the first part of the season when it kinks were having all the success in park when it had twenty five goals in twenty five games. How many times sees a guy that gained entry into the offense because of his speed so i think he accepted that role Now this'll be interesting. This next year she takes that strike or trying to establish consistency. A little bit better. Because i think as the kings start this next season i think the roles are going to be a little bit more defying I think he's going to be more understanding what's expected of him as opposed to which hope from from him and i think it's time now that that consistency factor really comes up and Is going to be a full season. It's going to be eighty two game season and he can't he can't afford to To disappear for ten game segments where he's not an impacted again. That doesn't necessarily mean he's got us for ten goals in three or four games. It's just that pressure is speed on the fortune. His physical play. He you know. He's a strong guy. He's bound so many guys off the puck because it becomes contagious and now as becomes a twenty five year old on this team this year. There's going to be a lot of guys that are going to be younger than him to just going to be a few guys a handful of guys especially not even a handful of guys up front. That'll be older than him. So he's got a really you know make. His presence felt there with his play and with his voice in the locker room. They need the voice and they needed a consistent fight for him but they're still upside to his game. Looking for consistency will ever be that. Thirty goals score. All only time will tell. But i think there's still a way for him. He's effective on a power play to be on the penalty. Kill continue to work on the faceoffs gives you that. Versatility to play center left right He's got a lot of places on the team. it's just a take. Make sure that those those peaks and valleys are are fewer and further between more consistency. His minutes have gone up every season. He played Has points of have a little bit this year. Fifty six games. Fourteen goals fifteen assists twenty nine points on pace reducing season and obviously the team around him could have been better. But i'm curious. You mentioned his voice in the locker room and needing to grow that role when he joined the team he's part of. I think he might be the only one You know. We talk about mike anderson being the third loudest voice in the locker room but mike anderson joined the team when it was already bottom of league. Right and and all the veterans not all but a ton of veteran voices and players had been moved out of the organization by the time mike anderson got here. You know when clinton by field and alixter gotten all these guys are joining the team on a permanent basis there will be these open spots for them to fill right whether it's on the ice or in the locker room but adrian joined the team right when they made the playoffs in two thousand seventeen eighteen. And and jake muhsin alec martinez. And you know. Tanner pearson in tyler. Toffoli in all these guys were still here. Trevor lewis cow clifford etcetera etcetera etcetera. How difficult would it be for for him to have to not only grow as a player but also change his personality as the dynamics of the locker room change around him. Well i think that probably you know if you if you talk to. Maybe some of the coaches at he had you know growing up. That could go all the way back to to use hockey and things like that they can give you originally as to what type of player was as he always been a by type of player others. No doubt it's intimidating when you go into a locker room as he did when he first came. How does players had been on stanley cup championship team. So you know you don't expect yourself come up and get a lot of people will tell you when you go. When you transition your specially first round picks. You don't wanna be you know you don't want to arrogance you. Don't want to be cocky. You wanna be accepted and absorbed into the cloth. And unless you're that superstar player like connor mcdavid comes on bang. Make a statement every every night. You know you're the guide franchises on your shoulders. Well that wasn't the case with campaign. I mean there's definitely expectation is that he's really good player. You know hopefully a great player. So i think now you gotta remember last year. There's no training camp jesse. So you know. The by fields. In a tally of these guys. They haven't been camp with a guy like camp racial mrs where he could see. Those guys maybe Those young guys might be more comfortable gravitating towards campaign as opposed to going up to ask co petar or rouda question. Your maybe they'll look at campaign He's just kinda gone through the most recently so this'll be a good year for him he's going to be one of those guys in the middle east. Not on that on the on that you know veteran grew out of a veteran group. But he's not the with years experience dowdy and quit your copay tar brown. Even i have follow in that like he comes. He comes underneath that where he's at middle guy for the young guys coming up so this is. This is a big year for him. This is a pivotal year for him. I think this is the year that he is either establishes himself as one of the guys. It's going to be that consistency again. Like you say. His numbers were good. Fourteen goals projects out over two eight over twenty goal season. But it's the fashion where they come to three weeks. He's best player in league couple of other weeks. Not a hundred percent. Sure if he's in the lineup. So is that. Consistency factor spread those rules out spread. The you know the assist all the points out things like that but perform on a consistent basis because at the end of the day that consistency will make his teammates better which will make them all better yet. It seems weird to criticize a guy forgetting hat trick. But he had three goals against anaheim one game in two goals against. I'm the next day at fourteen goals. Five of them came in two games. That means the rest of the season you know. Spread out the rest of his. I'm curious if you have a preference or or an idea of where. Adrian cambay fits on a cup contending team you know second line. Winger third-line winger play.

"So i think he creates an environment for those guys to grow and make themselves accountable Make make better decisions with You know going and engage in battles. He'll be there to support you but he's not going to work for you. And i think that i follow learn from a couple of kings best in copenhagen brown and i think he's a good person to be able to push that to the to the next year players that are coming. Up as you mentioned with the vulgarity. I think that's a great fit with a guy like me who you know. I think it's important for him at a young age. In winger what they're capable of doing and I apologize predictable as you can get very reliable. He's always in the right spot for the right things. Each and every night longtime listeners of all the king's men will be familiar with the phrase. happiness is measured by expectation. we say it all the time We try and keep our expectations measured. I think no player Is a more perfect. Fit for that. In adrian campaign because it feels like he's only twenty four He's about to turn twenty five in september but to me there's no player who seems to suffer negative criticism based on outside expectations than adrian. You know they come in plays second line center minutes in a season where jeff carter's than people want him to you know they keep trying to make him a second line center. Because i think as the kings start this next season i think the roles are going to be a little bit more defying I think he's going to be in mormon understanding what's expected of him as opposed to which hope from from him And i think it's time now that that consistency factor really comes up and Is going to be a full season. They need the voice and they needed consistent fight for him but they're still upside to his game looking for consistency will ever be that. Thirty goals score. All only time will tell. But i think there's still a way for him. He's effective on a power play to be on the penalty. Kill continue to work on the faceoffs gives you that. Versatility to play center left right He's got a lot of places on the team. It's just up. Take make sure that those up those peaks and valleys are are fewer and further between a little bit more consistency. His minutes have gone up every season. He's played Has points of have a little bit this year. You know when clinton by field alixter got all. These guys are joining the team on a permanent basis there will be these open spots for them to fill right. Whether it's on the ice or in the locker room. But adrian joined the team right when they made the playoffs in two thousand seventeen eighteen and and jake muhsin alec martinez. And you know. Tanner pearson and tyler toffoli in all these guys were still here. Trevor lewis cow clifford etcetera etcetera etcetera. How difficult would it be for for him to have to not only grow as a player but also change his personality as the dynamics of the locker room change around him. Well i think that probably you know if you if you talk to. Maybe some of the coaches that he had you know growing up. I mean there's definitely expectation is you know that he's really good player. Your maybe they'll look at campaign He's just kinda gone through the most recently so this'll be a good year for him he's going to be one of those glue guys in the middle east. Not on that on the on that you know veteran grew out of a veteran group. But he's not the.

"Changed. Gotta get that out of the and the third group is. He's trying to prevent a goal. And jake evans should be looking. That's three groups of people that i think exists out there. Do you think i'm missing. Anyone know whether there might be one one more group that sees this as two very specific teachable moments. And i don't even know if one is teachable. And i want to get to that in a couple of seconds here but you can look at this and say. There's there's actually two mistakes here one the hit and to the person putting himself in a position to get rocked and notices very distasteful for no. Cut you off there. Because i've been thinking about this all day. And i think i have a way to properly phrase this because i think there's a big difference between blaming the victim and saying could something have been done to avoid this and the best answer i got today was former former. Nhl player who now coaches kids and he said. I can think that mark safely was wrong here. But i can also say to the young kids. I coach that when you come out from behind the net in that situation you should have your head up. He said both things can be true. And this is a guy who played think he retired around two thousand ten. He said when i played that was okay and i had no problem with that being okay now. I don't think it's okay because the game is too fast and anybody with the lack of interference. And i know people complain. There's always interference. There's much less but with the speed of the players in the equipment they wear. He said we can't have that anymore and he said i feel very strongly that i can say that mark safely's hit needs to be taken out of the game but jake evans also has to understand that when he comes around the net. He's got to have his head. That's where i'm at on this one. That is exactly my position. But i wanted to take it. One step further will probably go back and forth on various parts of this initial situation in playoffs. We talk a lot about players making sacrifices. We talk a lot about players blocking shots. We talk about hired hockey players. We talk about putting your body in harm's way in a consistent basis. There's a part of me that wonders and there's only one person that knows the answer to this elliott. But part of me wonders if jake evans knows all that because i think that he does like you. Don't get to the nhl without knowing that like you don't come from around the net lake that without knowing the potential for danger exists. I refuse to believe the players. Don't know that. I was born at night but i wasn't born last night. I wonder if and only jake evans can answer this. I wonder if at that moment jake evans looked at this and said i'm going to score this goal and if i get hit i might get freight train here so be it. That's a sacrifice. I'm willing to make because it's the playoffs and i want this goal. You know. I think that's a very interesting way of looking at it and maybe that's true. I can't answer that. I don't know either. I wonder just wonder like it. Sounds like he avoided the most serious injury here. Like i was surprised to hear he didn't go to the hospital. And i trust dr moulder from the montreal canadian sir. He's been around at this for a long time. He's very highly respected by the organization. The players so i believe in his judgment. I trust his judgment. I was shocked to hear the go to the hospital. But it sounds like the good news is that although evans has a concussion and i take those very seriously he avoided definitely the worst case scenario that we were all worried about. But it's funny. You say that because people who told me almost the exact one eighty that their question was jake. Evans is still a guy who's relatively new to the national hockey league. He did get hit last year. By jake muhsin but he's still new the nhl and what they wondered is that what has one player. This is a hall of famer said this to me. Sometimes he thinks that young players come up through hockey now. Don't understand how much the game changes in the playoffs. And you know. He said to me that that play from march safely he said. There's no way that happens in the regular season and it kind of goes to a point that him and i agree on the biggest change in the playoffs is from the players. I know people hammer the refereeing. But i think some of the same things we complain about about. Refereeing happened in the regular season as they do in the playoffs. I think in the plows. The biggest change is the players. they're meaner they're nastier. They will do.

"You know that's doing that. Yeah i don't wanna do that anymore. What i've what i've learned is that they got more goals than we did. In that game you know and listen. Wasn't you know bad bounces happen all day. Long steve all day long. You know in hockey in playoff hockey you know. So they're fine fuck. They had a great year get jinxed again it's not it's not like steve you're hanging onto like harry sinden. I think ran the boston. Bruins right around seventy four years in a row like that right like that guy's name is still around there. I might get it. I might get it saying okay. You know every team steve. Every team goes through where they gotta rebuild into all that stuff and and where are we catching at. What part of their rebuild. You know but. I don't know to get rid of the guy. The gm get rid of the coach. No they played great. They had a good series. They play they had a great series. Edmonton had a great series. Three of those games were in overtime. You know so. Yeah i think Sometimes you do need to make a tough decision by making changes and and not kowtowing to things because yeah that's the nature of hockey. It's short series seven game series and can happen ryan and honestly. Nobody likes to see the leafs having trouble more than me. But you know jake muhsin maybe most hard asked defense. But i don't think there's any question is and your captain john taveras your experienced skill guy. joe thornton is a so-called experience skill. He has experienced for sure. I don't know that you can put his skill in the elite department. The way you can. I know you can't weekend with john taveras. So he was a big mess to lose him in game one. He probably makes a difference in that series. And you wanna bring in these. All that joe thornton thing. This is what i thought. Toronto shoulda done right because the guy at streaks are greatness already a couple of great games and we will. We need them with the guys we need. The we need the experience. We need the body. Yada yada yada. Bring joe thornton okay. But not.

"Them to steve. If you're a gm of another team are you picking up the phone going. Yeah love to get that guy you know. We need that sort of thing on our team. Yeah it's about it's about the Is the expression. The is the juice worth the squeeze. I don't think i'm that interested. I don't think i Because i know the sense could use a guy like that Because the defense right now is a mass but this club has just recently gone through major turmoil in the dressing room with You know what happened with the era. Carlson mike hoffman situation whilst girlfriends getting into it Players upset with each other than was uber. Cab ride where guys get caught on video. And they're ripping the assistant coach. John video I think that that's been a real say what you want about the construction of the team. They've done extra work in making sure they're bringing in good human beings to the franchise right and so i think that While you might take a flyer on this guy like a bummer. You ask a question about whether if a rival gm. If i'm interested normally i might say yeah you get it down to a million. It'd be hard to hard to at least kick the tires there right. If you're if you're picking up the tab for the rest. I certainly in ottawa. Have lots of Cap room so i might look at it but Not with the recent history. The sense of had. I certainly am not taken a flyer on that right now it. It should humble the guy right. It should humble the guy Right to look up to wake up and go what what's going on here. Oh my god i'm not. I guess i'm not as good as i think i am right. Yeah some guys are beyond humbling. I don't think there's any question about that I wanna talk about another situation. That's happening in calgary right now. They had a players only meeting. Not real happy about their start overall and Matthew could shock is sort of at the center of this one because again. This is elliott friedman's column again. We all remember from last tuesday. If you've been watching hockey the jake muhsin incident where at the end of a leafs and flames game muhsin after the flames had just lost. Calgary's running around out there with empty net trying to tie the game and they failed and so at the end could shock and muslim kind of digging for a pocket and then the game ends muhsin turns around well cooks on his knees and gently flips the puck. Adam as if to say nice try junior. It was really no velocity in the pocket. All it was more just a you know enough where it could chuck you if he said f off and that's the end of it And they skate off the ice. That would to me seem like the natural thing to do but could chuck exploded goes after muslim tries to fight him and then after that after got broken up. He's skating off the icees knocking over the stick rack. Water bottles slamming doors. But he wasn't upset about the fights according to elliot friedman. He said It was more that he was upset that none of the other flames came in to join him in the scrum and Well i guess he conveyed that message in the meeting last friday and meanwhile got it back from some of the other players in what it can't be a riot out there every night which Well could chuck. I think would like it to be that way. So we'll see exactly if that's a an issue moving forward but certainly could shock is one of those guys that likes to be the so-called shift disturbance out there right and Guess maybe feels like the guys. Don't care enough right now. Right except fighting for another guy protecting other and speaking to marty right protecting other guys. Right is a huge thing you know. Come into a guys rescue Stepping in front of a guy saying hey you touch that guy again okay. I'm going to rip your throat out right all that stuff been around. You know particularly hockey right. It's been around a long time and when you see it. It's a really cool thing about sports. Okay so you really admire a player you know if one of your guys is getting. Beat up where you skate over there. You're gonna grab another guy and you're going to hammer him or maybe even third man in and take the big penalty but also steve. So that's impressive when guys do that. What's as impressive. Though steve is whole as as having restraint sometimes okay to show your team That that's the right thing to do right. No one's no one's checking out there. Steve no no. No one's afraid to fight a guy or mix it up with a guy. There's known as able to do that but that guy should have shown restraint and that would have been to me. You know when we got in the locker room. I think it would have been a pat on the back to the guy going. Good one because you could've you could've fought the guy you could. You could mixed this whole thing up in maters muzzle which he did and and now you've got a whole issue with the team. Now he comes off. Screaming goes you guys should have been in there too. I love to know how this meetings go when when three or four of the guys stand up. We'll we'll you shouldn't have done that. You know you you should have just pipe down. Okay laughed and walked off. Walked off the ice. The game was over. You know. And so i bet there's gonna be some of that or was probably some of that in the meeting going. You gotta keep your temper a little bit pal. I mean the limited lame hockey. I've played over the years We'd always have guys like a like a ca chuck. Who were wrecking balls. All the time and it got exhausting. A penalty's being taken and constantly you know at a ten on the On the richter scale out there every single night my message would always be like you know what the bulk and occasionally go through the china shop without destroying the place you know rights in awhile so right But matthew could jack is obviously a great young player but Maybe needs sometimes pick his spots a little better and kind of interesting to that. His brother brady got into it quite a bit with zack. Kassian last night and I guess the two brothers both have a thing about kassian. Kassian can't be a very big chuck. I of course he's had a big thing going with matthew for a long time but Yeah brady wanted a piece of 'em last night and cassie wanted to oblige. "He have a bounce back season. Now i am of the opinion that everything that has happened to the kings over the last two or three seasons. Their fall from contention to second overall. Pick drafting status is not the result of players copay. Tara quick dowdy getting older being washed or anything like that. I mean i know that yet has nothing to do with those. Yeah and group. Yeah now carter suffered injuries and brown at this point. Maybe you know. They're all obviously older than they were two or three years ago but the year that they made the playoffs and faced off against vegas. Dustin brown on jacob heart drew doughty. Jake muhsin trevor lewis. I can't remember who else like. All those guys had career years so i always just sort of refused to believe that between you know april of two thousand eighteen and october of two thousand eighteen. That somehow they all physically lost the ability to compete. I was convinced that it was some combination of organizational draft You know they've fire. John stevens early into the eighteen nineteen season. I think it was there. Were obviously the complaints about willie d. last season. They had a new coaching staff new systems. And all that. And i still am of the opinion that it had more to do with what was going on between everybody's ears than you know on the ice and from what i've seen from drew doughty this season icy guy who's way closer to the drew doughty that we saw in two thousand eighteen and two thousand sixteen in two thousand fourteen than than the guy we saw during some of the darker moments last season in the season before it. Yeah i mean personally. I'm i'm with his game. I know he's happy with his game. He's been vocal about that. The coaching staff in management of have been happy with what they've seen on the ice. From judy he leaves the nhl in time on ice right. Now which is something that we want to get away from but given the current standing of the right side of the defense which wasn't supposed to read it an issue or a topic of conversation. He's likely going to be logging. Quite a few minutes in the absences of roy walker. But you know three goals three assists six points through through eight games as young good stat line for defense than You know it's interesting because you know we talked about how over the last few years. It's not the doughty's in the in the the core the quick the doughty copa tar trio or four five guys in that in that little small circle. But.

"Their welcome to the show. Sense fall eight five in edmonton on sunday night and still struggling with the basics. That's eight straight losses. Now for the sense they want opening night over toronto one of the best teams in the league and of course they've reeled off eight straight losses and kept on battling they've been Outshooting their opponents. They did it again this evening. Thirty eight to thirty three still getting thumped bill. Brady caccia calling white. Each had a goal and an assist and artem zoo got an assist in his first. Nhl game thomas shadow. His absence was obvious. Connor mcdavid leandra side. Let eleven points together on the night. They'd five a piece before the game was barely halfway through. So eight is back to the drawing board. Once again for the ottawa senators who still languish in last place overall in the nhl and they get a couple more games against the orleans here in the next week or so looking back to the saturday night. Game as the oilers beat the leafs that connor mcdavid goal was a thing of beauty. Was it not like he went around jake muhsin like he was playing in his are muslim. Talking about like muslim was playing his very first pro hockey game embarrassed. The guy goes in on a breakaway scores. Just vintage connor mcdavid stuff. There's not many guys in the league who can do that is tracy how good the guy is. How fast is whatever. I saw a bunch of comets and his lateral speed has his flat out speed. His hands is is all this stuff you know all of it adding up to what the guys the guys leading in all categories you know when it comes to scoring goals it makes me think those stevie if if i was to coach a kid even growing up if the kids growing up playing junior I would because it puts fear in defendant. Okay and a guy guys trying to defend a guy is speed. That's what i would go for. I would. I would say if you've got to pick one thing. Okay become the fastest guy in the league or one of the fastest. And you're going to get some room you're going to get you're going to. I don't know what you think. I mean stickhandling and all that stuff is good in passing and and whatever else you know hitting the games right now for sure. It's all about eve domain question. Yup yup guys are just. You can see them kind of freeze you know. They're not because like where he's he's gonna go somewhere here but i don't know he's to go and it's and i'm supposed to try and stop them and the next thing he's behind you. You know your crazy crazy. That's why most powerplays are set up with that neutral zone dropped pass because it allows for guys to come through the neutral zone with speed and gets defenders on their heels slaughter. People hate it because when it goes wrong. It doesn't look very good but if it's done the way it's designed it actually is a very effective way to break out power play and it. It takes advantage of speed. And that's how they did it game. The old others that was. That was the move with paul. Coffey coming coming up as you say coming up through the neutral zone right and drop it off and use frigging steamrolled his way in there really. Oh sure i remember that. Watch some of that stuff where they dropped it off to cough coming out of their own end for sure. Oh sure i mean. I remember the you know. Leave it for coffey down near the goal line and let him roll but one guy taking get through most of the neutral zone and getting over the red line and then slingshot at back to the defensive zone. You came from that's to me. I think that's a new revelation here in the last five years. Well i'm not saying it was exactly like connor mcdavid but but he has had the speed radio. The big the big speed right the other fight i was like why do they edmonton oilers wanted. I decide to wear uniform. That looks very much like their hated. Rival calgary flames seem like an odd choice. The oilers must lead lead the league in alternative jerseys and of course this is all the adidas thing But i saw them in another one. That was like you know blue with orange numbers and such it was like i don't know it. Seems like their second alternative jersey. That i've seen already this year and the league the hell with wearing. Yeah what. I'm just looking at the leaf. Steel kinda the seventies eighties look and they wear numbers that are gray or dark blue. They have a great outlined but blue so it looked like nobody had numbers on. I know i know. I know how the how the marketing people look at that and go. Yeah that's a good one there. Everyone everyone they won't know who the guy is. But that's okay play by play nightmare. Can i have announced matt jersey. I think it's thirty five. I couldn't see yeah. Well marine's background. Yeah remember i mean. We're old enough to recall a game with. Nhl was played without helmets and that was actually kind of cool. It was very safe in the way of skull fractures and such but it was cool from a viewer ship standpoint. You didn't need to see the number because you could identify the guy very quickly just based on hair colour hairstyle facial hair. Whatever it is a everybody was very instantly identifiable and then the helmets game and then the advisors came and now they've wiped out the numbers in toronto fairly fan. You don't know who your word i can name. I can name two possibly three guys that i remember playing in the nhl without helmets. One was here. Craig mctavish okay And hang on. hang on. hang on hang on. who's the other guy. I've never played without a helmet. Surely you remember a time when the nhl was all guys like ninety five percent no helmets. Well no i. When i was a kid. You mean yeah. I'm trying to think after the mid eighties when i when i I can tell you some of the guys if you want. Yeah so you get craig matab. Which was the last guy to play without a helmet. brad marsh. Yeah that's sick. And if i year an auto actually. It's to imagine a team as young as the ottawa senators. Even they had a guy who didn't play. We'll play without a helmet there others other guys as well. That's still plotted around late. In the game rondo. Gay was very late Guiding smith anyone else see court not wear a helmet. Yeah he. he went helmet. I think his whole career went pretty late in the game. Was there a tough guy in philly to who didn't A tough guy in philly. Anywhere all philly. Yeah if go backwards. That's about as far back as i can. Go mccosh and brad marsh k. Changing gears interesting speech. The new jersey devils new head coach this year in lindy. Ruff veteran coaches bounced around the league for years buffalo. Dallas and now in new jersey and jersey's actually pretty good start they were one of the teams that did not make that expanded playoffs back in the summertime and now they're they're a point out of making the playoffs this year and their newly aligned division. So it's a bit of a spicy the devils where they are and lindy russ getting some credit for that and he gave a speech after their win This weekend he beat the panthers and he's doing this standard thing you know game puck to this guy kudos to this guy and then he threw in a bit of a dig at pk. Sue ban at the end of the speech says lindy ruff after the game the other day.

"And so his his age. Probably you can multiply it forward a little bit now however vancouver had myers hughes schmidt adler and then jamie benn and a free untested totally untested players like. How is that going to work. It's not and so they get hammock in there and now you've got hammock to play with us right. That's nate schmidt's a good player so really good. Gifted is a great word that they were gifted. So now you've got schmidt playing with adler and now you know in some form. And then you've got myers with probably lady their first round pick from a few years ago who seems to have come around the corner injury wise and play wise. Now you look at the blue light and you go man. I could see that this was a good signing for them. Now i don't know drags you know this like. They can't make it official till they put. Michael furlan lt. I correct correct. And that's the league has stepped in on that too by the way right frank. Seravalli was doing some reporting on social media and whatnot. Where they're saying okay. You need to disclose us and you need to file that contract otherwise roster that you have today is the one that you're going to work with Because it is a form of cap circumvention. Right and i believe. That's why the saint louis blues did what they did in announcing hoffman. So again as we're recording this. Maybe it will be announced when people are listening. Furlan has been placed on lt. Ira that's the wiggle room for. Jim banning in the to make the one year deal. Travis helmet worked. It looks like eriksson is going to be either on a taxi squad. Or i guess that's where he'll be so a million dollars comes off to cap one point seven five. That's a you know. That's ed pebble in the shoe of cannock fans out here. That's for sure is that and they're just you know they've seen enough of of what didn't work but they're still got you know they still got some clogs in the salary cap there but this this whole division is going to is going to be a bit of a scramble and i think we all know it's gonna be really interesting but vancouver's okay i i don't think they're calgary. I don't think they're toronto. I don't think they're montreal. But i think they're in that group with edmonton winnipeg. And kinda you know. It's a in my opinion. It's going to be three team scuffle to see who gets in you mentioned. We had a brief conversation with corey. Perry and fully fits into that category too. But i call it the collection graybeards right and it seems like veteran players players was down in cup experience just experienced period of always mattered. So let's let's twist this in a different way. But i look at what the toronto maple leafs have done. Here and man. I'm intrigued by it. I am and i think this goes back to the jake. Muhsin trade with the la kings where they went. Okay we're acquiring this piece and then they realize okay. Muslims pretty good defense than but manny's good and he's good in the bench. He's good with the media and you know they'd special there again The experience factor they bring in jumbo joe thornton and they bring in wayne simmons. So now it's become more than two incidents or just trying to mix things up a little bit right..

jamie benn Michael furlan Perry schmidt Furlan Seravalli nate schmidt eriksson hughes schmidt Ira Jim wayne simmons corey first round today one year joe thornton edmonton winnipeg more than two incidents seven
