"Are walk me through the way the running back position you think in this league is being evaluated right now. It just depends on it depends on that team, rich. It depends on the most important thing is for the players that you draft. The players that you acquire, whether you're talking about free agency or the draft, you have to have conviction on the players you're taking. And you have to have a clear vision for how you're going to utilize them. And so when we're together, again, you know, author Smith and the type of person he is and how he sees the game. And so we have a lot of smart people in this building. And when we sit down and go through it, we determine, okay, what's the vision for this player? Whoever it is, what's the vision? How are they going to be utilized and how are they going to fit into what we do? So that's why you have to go through everyone's draft board. Everybody's job for, you have 32 different graph boards because that team is going to take the best player for them. So when we discuss it, again, we don't put him in a running back box. We discuss them. No different than Drake. We didn't take Drake because he was the best available receiver. We took him because he was the best player for us and we had a clear vision of how we're going to use a much like Kyle Pitts a year ago. We're taking players who were not thinking about position. We're thinking about the impact they're going to have for us. And we have a clear vision in how we're going to utilize. Terry fontanel, general manager Atlanta Falcons here on the rich eisen show. Another way to help out a quarterback who's kind of new to the starting role as yours is in Desmond Ritter, get him a run game, get him protected, and again you use your second round choice on the offensive tackle Matthew bergeron out of Syracuse. But you also get him a tight end and you already have one of those and what a decision that was to take pits where you've taken him and you took a tight end top four and now you're taken a running back top 8 and a quarterback in the second round or you're given a shot here, is this walk me through your decision making on these being your tent pole guys and your expectation level here for the offense in year two for Desmond Ritter. Would it we do believe that you build a team front to back inside out. So you have to invest in the front. And that's always going to be the most important thing we are going to invest in the front. And so we're talking about players that we drafted in the top ten over the last three years, but we've also made major investments upfront when you talk about a couple of years ago. Extending our life cycle Jake Matthews and then extending Grady gear. Our defensive tackle a year ago and this year to be able to make Chris lynch from the high state garden league and to be able to extend Caleb and the investments we made with as we go through our defensive line with clay's Campbell, bud Dupree, David on yamada, bringing back Lorenzo Carter. So we believe that the most important thing is the front. We have to invest, whether it's draft capital, whether it's for a since, we need to invest because we believe the way you're in a really win game and have sustained success is establishing the line of we want to have tough violent physical front and we believe we believe in the identity that we have. And so we want to continue to add to that. But that being said, yes, when you can add offensive weapons that can help out because we believe in our team, we believe in Desmond because of the person he is, the leader he is, the way he works. We believe he's going to, he's going to get the most of his ability because of the person he is and the way he's going to work. And we believe in our team and it takes total team offensively defensively. You got to have balance. You have to be able to run the ball. You have to have playmakers. And you have to be able to rush the quarterback and take the ball away on defense and stop the run. So we believe we want to continue to make the total team better and that's going to help everyone. But what's Desmond river's expectation level then? What do you got for me for this fall? We want him to look my office actually faces are I can look right out my window and see the field and man whatever every time I turn around there's guys out there working and they're doing their best to get better and that's who that is and he's a worker and you look at he wasn't highly recruited coming out and all he did was once a Cincinnati and became one of the winningest quarterbacks in college football and no one will say that anything was given to him. He earned everything that he got and we expect the same with him here and he has that mindset. He's going to earn everything he gets and we love our team. We love the character and identity of our team that he sits right in there. So then let me ask you this this way then I mean you had so many options Arthur when he was on last month said, of course you guys talked about Lamar Jackson. You talk about everything and then you made your decision and then you kick the tires I'm sure on a ton of kids in this year's draft at the quarterback position had them in for visits and things of that nature. Why did you eventually land on Desmond Ritter as your guy? Yeah, it's about just what you said.

"Works. There's not a guy that's more comfortable in his own skin. I think he's a head coach than Mike vrabel. Maybe Mike mcdaniel. Yeah. So the other sort of tidbits that we teased running backs a little bit. And we had some thoughts on this after, I don't know. I'm vacillating, right? Because I think what we said on the last show and I agree with you with and you have a little bit more extra kind of good Intel from art Smith that I want to get to. I'll just reiterate, I think we're in a cover to league. I think that, you know, I've checked with a lot of coaches on how you beat this point and it is checked down. It's allowing running backs to soften up these zones, break it up so you can get the ball downfield. That's why I don't have a problem with bijan. I don't have a problem with Gibbs. I think that in this vacuum that we're in, you have to give teams an excuse or you have to give them a forgiveness, especially if there's an elite level prospect. But I really liked what I really like with art Smith told you about bijan too. Yeah, so there were some things like, you know, the day after the draft a couple days after the draft, I do, you know, some background work on what teams were thinking and kind of where they're at and one of the things when I was talking to falcons people about it and the discussion in their room was sort of, you know, where Arthur Smith has his vision for the offense and a big part of it and I thought this was so fascinating was Arthur connecting it to basketball. And he's a big fan of the 13 and 14 spurs and then of the current day warriors, right? And you know, the thing he likes about them is that they're positionless. And so they've got the flexibility to kind of create bad matchups against everybody. And part of the reason why is because they've got so many guys that are interchangeable. So they can move them around. And now you look at what they've built there with their first three first round picks. And I'm not normally a huge throw, throw everything at skill positions, guys, guy, but they do have like the offensive line mostly taken care of with Jake Matthews and Caleb mcgarry and Chris lidstrom and those guys, right? And so you look at what they've drafted the skill positions and it's Kyle Pitts and it's Drake London who are guys you can move around and now bijan Robinson who's as good a good enough receiver to line up in the slot. And so now if you're a defensive coach or a defensive player and you're looking at them at the huddle and they break the huddle and you don't know who's going where, that's a real problem, you know? And I think this even extends to like quarter old Patterson, one of the reasons why they really liked corridor all Patterson and why they've paid Corey Ralph Patterson is because he's another one of these guys who you can when you break the hollow, you don't know where the guy's going. And so I think it's sort of, it's like it's the idea of like looking at skill position players ambiguously and not as like in a box. Like this guy is just this. It's more how can we find guys who can do multiple things and threaten the defense in certain multiple ways. And I think Gibbs is the same thing. You know what I mean? Like Gibbs is a passing game weapon. Gibbs is not just a running back. Gives us a passing game weapon. And so if you don't think the receiver class is great, right? Why not take a running back first? And I think we get so caught up in like, well, there's the longevity and you can find Isaiah Pacheco in the 7th round, all that's true. But if you have this guy who can be a queen on the chessboard for you, you know, where you can move them around like however you like, well, then that's a problem for everyone. And then you take it to the second contract, which is the big question, right? Let me ask you this, Conner. Do you know what other players make? So Derek Henry makes 12 million a year. Joe Mixon makes 12 million a year. Nick Chubb makes 12 million a year. Joe also makes 12 million a year. Hunter Henry, Corey Davis, it's like these guys, these other positions where it's like, they're, they're okay. Right? But if you give a guy a second contract at running back, you're getting a guy at that price who is top of the league at that position, and you're probably only giving him a couple of guaranteed years. So you're going to be out of that after a couple of years anyway. So I just look at it and I'm like, have we gone so far with the devaluing running backs thing that now all of a sudden there are value. Yeah. You know? And it's not that crazy to think you can keep a guy on the field for 6 years if you manage him properly, you know? Like part of the problem with Zeke alley was the cowboys ran him into the ground, you know? And the cowboys, he had so much volume his first three years in the league got so beat up that eventually he was, I mean like, but you look at what Zeke Elliott did for dak Prescott and how much he meant for dak Prescott as a quarterback, right? And then look at like what Todd Gurley did for Jared Goff in LA and like that's what saquon was supposed to be for Daniel Jones and now they're able to keep saquon healthy for a year and what did that mean for Daniel Jones? There are so many levels to this that I think people just ignore and just, I think it's sort of lazy to look at it and stamp it as yep, running back bad pick, you know? Like to me, it's like, can you get them to the second contract? Can he do more than just run the ball? And can he help you develop a young quarterback? I think all these things can be factors for you. You know, and I just, I think that I just don't think people are creative enough looking at that position, you know? And it's sort of like the same thing as with the golf ball lineback. There's like Micah Parsons, a lot of the criticism of Michael Parsons was the off ball linebacker thing. Is that really just what he is? Right. Or is he more than that? That's why he fell to 12 one of the reasons he fell to 12. No, he's more than that, you know? And so I think that there are these people, these guys coming into the league now because of how the play games being played at the lower levels that are sort of stamped in a position when they're really kind of positioned with. I think Parsons is that guy on defense. You know, and I think on offense, you're starting to see more running backs coming in with that sort of skill set because they have to have that sort of skill set to survive at lower levels of the game. Or the 2013 spurs reference was solid and so I just Googled the 2013 spurs and it's so funny because I just sort of got back into the NBA because I have a friend who's a big Knicks fan and I've never liked the NBA. I've never really been into it and I just found out that Tim Duncan is not in the NFL or the NBA anymore. Like on the podcast live, I just found out that Tim Duncan was your reaction to that. Let's just say, you know, I mean, I like Tim Duncan. He's not like and he's not like now the head coach of the spurs. I just thought he would always just be with the spurs. I'd be like Bill Russell, where Bill Russell became the coach of the Celtics when he retired. Yeah, I don't know. Yeah. God. And there's nothing, there's nothing after 2020 on his personal life. So again, Wikipedia. He would push pop, Greg pop if it's just inside the same way Bill Russell kind of like moved right in our back into retirement. That would have been perfect. That's what would make sense to me. I mean, the big fundamental. What better way for art Smith to build a team than around you? I wonder who is Tim Duncan as a Kyle Pitts. I don't know. Yeah. So last thing that I have here, I think rich eisen had the stat and it was somewhere in the 5th round I wanted to say that more quarterbacks had been taken through the 5th round of this draft already than the entirety of the year before definitely the most in the top one 50 ever. It was I think the most in the top one 50 ever. And I think to me, that is, that's the Brock pretty effect. That is. And you and I have talked about this. "I'm going to change the order here because I'm so excited to get to bijan. And so yeah, I did want to step on you there. No, no, no. This is good. So we'll get to the QBs at the end. We'll close it out with the QBs because I do want to talk about the QB order in general and how we felt that went. But favorite pick of round one, it was bijan. And so here's where I'm going to give myself a little bit of credit. I had bijon going to the Lions at 18. I thought that I did think that the Lions were in the running back market. I thought bijan was going to fall because I thought that Atlanta maybe needed a little bit more. But as I started thinking about this last night, I thought, how cool and smart this is because here's what you're doing. You've already put a little bit of gas in the motor behind Desmond Ritter. And you're already saying you're our guy for next year. We didn't go get Lamar Jackson. We didn't trade up to number one. And what is going to make, this is going to help him realize his potential. You're going to have a killer running game. You have a pretty decent offensive line. You have Drake London and Kyle Pitts who were two of the better skilled position players in the league. And now you have Tyler Tyler algier and bijan Robinson who are both just jackhammer running backs. I think you're investing in line we've invested in too. Don't forget about it. Jake Matthews. They paid Caleb Gary, like Mikael mcgarry. They've invested pretty deeply in the line too. Yeah. And so I think what you're doing is outside of the fact that I love the pick because if I was still playing Madden, if I had more than 6 seconds of my day to pick up a video game controller and I totally would.

And so I watched a lot of YouTube videos about Richard meal watches, read a lot about Richard meal watches, and I'm just saying it's really interesting. I don't know if I would spend a $100,000 on it, even if I had a $100,000 to spend on it, but okay. That's an expensive watch. All right, all right. A lot of Formula One guys like Richard meal. So, moving on from watches and poop. I think the deal with this team is they are, they are really bad. The thing that kind of shocks me and we didn't want to deep dive the offensive line too much and we are going to perhaps talk about another team that did not address their offensive lines efficiently. But the falcons have tried to build this offensive line and it's just bad. I didn't even know if the individual parked or that bad. They just didn't play well last year. I wonder if maybe the second year in the system, you get a little bit of a bump here, and then you can get something of a run game going behind Cordero Patterson, of course, and then, I don't know, maybe they over achieve a little bit. You can't really project anyone in this league to be like a two or three win team because there's just not that much separation and you're a couple of bounces away from being a 5 or 6 win team, but man, it is really difficult to find reason for optimism outside of we have Kyle Pitts and we have AG Terrell and eventually we're going to have better players around them. Yeah, the falcons were the poster child kind of for you and I did that story in October of last year. Basically about how every team is running this version of the same offense and the offensive line coach is a really important, but there's only like 7 of them that know how to do it. And so Atlanta was one of those teams that had to just find a guy and kind of work on it backwards, right? And sort of do things in a different way. So we'll see what happens there, right? I think this was always going to take a little bit longer. And some of the pieces were a little disjointed. I think we all knew that Chris lindstrom would be great in this kind of in this kind of an offense. Jake Matthews, to me, when he was drafted in 2014, I liked him a lot more than other people did during, you know, I think he had a really bad PFF season, but I thought he actually played pretty well. That first year, but he's a different kind of tackle.

Carl Davis has done a pretty good job this whole year. Run defense he came up with a couple of big plays, you know, Kyle duggar. I mean, look, this is a guy who, for a long time, most of his career end of the season we're like, well, is he going to start making plays? He seems to be in the right position. He doesn't seem to have a whole lot of mental errors, but does he have a knack for the ball and making plays? And now we've seen in consecutive weeks, that he's making plays. So all of that stuff, and he shut down Kyle Pitts. They largely just left pits to Kyle duggar and he largely shut them down. I mean, you know, let's be honest. I mean, it's not like there was much other many other weapons for the Patriots to pay attention to. They poured a lot of first round picks into that offensive line. You know, I think you can see where the new guys in charge there. Andy Reid didn't Kansas City where we can build around a veteran quarterback for the first few years be competitive year in and year out and then eventually pick our spot when there's a quarterback out there that we really like in the draft and get aggressive and going get him, But I do think job number one for them going into this offseason was cleaning up the salary cap, and that's This whole thing began. They really have five players. They've got gigantic contracts on the roster on DATs. You know Ryan, Julio Dion Jones, Jake Matthews and Grady Jarrett. And they've already restructured three of those guys. So you know, Ryan, Dion Jones and Jake Matthews are in for 2021. The question then becomes Where do you find space going forward? You want to keep pushing money forward, So what's already going to be a 22 in two problem becomes a 2023 problem. I just think when you add the fact that Julio quietly lodged that request through his agent in early March, you can kind of had things up. Where you say, OK, The Falcons were looking for capital E. Here's a guy who doesn't want out. The other guy's one in Let's build going forward is if we're gonna win right now, knowing that there's 12 big piece, the puzzle is probably going to come out who should call the Falcons today.
