"The first one you've heard. This is the first one that looks attractive. Number six. Six. Yeah but be all those experiences mandate just. I'm thankful for every single one of them. Yeah. So so so you're sitting in your car, you're driving to work or you're sitting at work pretending to work for. You know trying to work and pay attention to things which you know is not actually working or paying attention. You're just not doing anything. What are you? What are you tell like? Man You know I. Like I told that story earlier you know pulling up instagram accounts while I had a day job and you know, I, think the big differentiator between me and other people during that time is when other people had off time in the oilfield, they're playing games and watching movies I was always reading and learning, and so I think it's a BS excuse for most people won't say that preface it with most people that if you have a forty hour job that is plenty of time to. At least learned in invest in yourself like you don't even have like you don't even have to have a quote unquote side hustle but you can be meaning other people you can be learning new skills like look at my path it's non linear. How did I go from being an oilfield roughneck to building up social media accounts on Instagram to wanting to buy a waste disposal company to digital wildcatters? It's because I was. Always, just taking the time to talk to other people and learn about other industries. So that's what I tell people is invest in yourself. So I was leaving I was planning my driveway I think this morning or yesterday morning and I saw the yard guy they're kind of like some stuff and I notice he didn't have headphones in and I was going to stop and I was going to say something to him but you. Don't say here bust. My Ass. Until tell. Speaking of Spanish honestly probably to communicate to them 'cause I've tried in the past but here's a funny story. So two, thousand, sixteen, I left the company that I founded in on August twelfth was a day that I said, Hey, we obviously you're having are falling out I'm leaving. What was I going to do? I had no fucking clue but I still had bills. And obviously was making no money in the start of life and so I looked out the window one morning I was probably a week or two into kind of my retirement and I looked at us all the were. And so I was like, okay. I'm going to go next door and I posted hey who wants to their driveway pressure washed right trust me the story is going somewhere and So lost. TO PRESSURE WASH At forty five responses didn't even own a pressure Washer when I bought some pressure washers since it started this little pressure washing business. But the reason I thought about the yard guy was because when I was pressure washing driveways could pull in five, hundred, twelve, hundred dollars a day surprising why.

"Into. My work. Life the way I look at it is You know I look at it as a numbers game like he talked about failures and you know risk like look when I quit my job at three young kids. Yeah. Three young kids in leaving my job six figure job going to zero not having any medical benefits and you know shout out to my wife, my wife went from not working to full time and being able to essentially financially support us even though is quite a bit less than what we made but. You know I look at like I've never viewed a loss or As a loss or failure is just it's an investment me yet and I think that's really important and he no, it's nice when you get a company like digital cameras like you've had five failures and you hit the one that takes off feels fucking good. Yeah and it feels good because you know how bad it sucks to keep trying over and over again and fail, and so like for me you know even if you could tell twenty year old calling like I could go back in time K. A. Look I'm GonNa give you you know a ten million dollar business and you can run it. I wouldn't want to go back and do that because the journey was the most exciting part for me actually like I. Kind of like get sad sometimes it's like you don't may not get to relive those those journeys and having those hardships but I think that you have to embrace those things I. Think Entrepreneurship is certainly isn't numbers game. If you look at the wealth gap in in America I, think it's pretty clearly skewed towards. Business owners math business managers may be. For lack of a better term, I hope that that that's fair. And there's a bit of a contract. Hey, we can pay you to do this one job where where maybe we do or maybe we don't really want you to think very much depending on what you're doing where you're going for but there's enough of those jobs to fill one particular mission for one company. To to.

"I was paying and so I was like really into being social obviously not going to class he's young man I just I just wanted my independence one an F. Lon. Long story my parents collectively got together like my mom and my Stepdad called my dad and there were like, Hey, we're going to drop them. He's like, yeah, I'm going to drop them too. So they completely dropped me financially I had three weeks to figure out what to do with my life. Is Up you're moving out, you figure out what you want to do with your life and so I looked at. I. Looked around. took an assessment of was like I can stay at Reynolds and Reynolds. Stay here. I can go full time at seventeen years old like forty, two, thousand dollars a year sounds like a ton of money right and I was like, oh, this sounds like kind of okay. I hate my job and I don't really want to do this I was like or I looked at some of the people who stayed there people who would done that same thing maybe ten years prior and kind of got complacent same position. Now, even looking like what ten fifteen years later. So we've seen him people in the same jobs during the same damn thing I'll say is not what I want for my life. And I was like I was never like nothing I was like anti military but it was was like I'm going to join the military right Not a big guy was not the guy who's GonNa. Go out and just shoot it on a guns was not the manly man playing sports or anything. But to do it, I started putting some feelers out there everybody talking Shit Insane I like Look Jake you should go to the air force you should go to the Coast Guard look at yourself. You'RE GONNA get yourself killed sounds like I will fuck you guys I'm going to re goes. Literally wash straight straight in the Marine Corps recruiters office.

"I said, I, was Twenty one wanted to start a trucking company I had all the clients I was just trying to get enough capital. So like what I was doing, I was actually arbitraging I had a client J. Klay Thompson and my buddy had his own water hauling truck company, and so I was connecting the two and then I was just charging premium and taking that spread and anyways my business partner ended up stealing money from US ten thousand dollars ended up winning the business and. You know that's what brought me to know here in Houston and what I'd call us eight, my my adult life. I'm not as much trouble as I was as a kid. But I, you know when I got that promotion in February two, thousand eighteen. You know I was young I was like twenty five, twenty, six years old no making. Almost two, hundred thousand dollars and I was like I'm getting too ingrained in this like I'm never gonNA quit I've got a two good I've got six figure salary. I've got medical benefits as like if I don't quit. Now, when am I taking test of this? He's like you just gotTa quit. I was up there. quit. I quit I called my boss on my hey man putting my two weeks notice he's like, what are you going to go do as I to be honest man I don't have a clue but I'm just going to figure it out. I'm going to do something and so that kind of led you know we did some crazy shit man we did some like both Jake and I we did some tech consulting. We Want Boston wolves up in Oklahoma some oil wells like. Don't know why we did that. But it was a good idea at the time and learned a lot from that of gut huge amount of experience experience you got you got a lot of experience that means financially was. You know exactly what? Could I. Don't ever lose that just learn consulting it was good financially honestly but it was not necessarily the clients that we worked with wasn't great. I'm sure if we had better clients would have been fun but the wells was we got experience. I get this I go like you know everyone that works in you know especially like engineers and fuelled hands they always have this dream of being like an independent oilman right and you WANNA go by Aska one well, and then we'll pick up. And so. We go and by these wolves up in. Okay. All, right. Excellent. You run into issues like when we bought him, it was the rainiest season in North West Northeast Oklahoma on record and that put us back like our lease roads or washing out you couldn't even get to the wells. You couldn't get our well service because was backed up and it became an issue like things that we couldn't even control from an operation standpoint and so yeah, we lost a Lotta money but. More importantly we lost time on it but then it's like what do you consider lost? We learned like I got a whole `nother level of respect for oil and gas operators out of that because it's not as easy as it looks even if you have spent a decade out in the oil business is not as easy as it looks to operate an asset. So it's very easy to chuck those up to failures. But looking back and looking at the butterfly effect of what leads everything. You. Guys can't see and pointing to. Which is another company that we co founded and indoor is a lot of money for we. We think it's going to do really really well, but had we not had that experience I don't think necessarily we would have the experience maybe even the credibility to even come out and do some of the things that we had done leader on..

"And There's is over here where to. Get Out. On. This there's this linked in influence or guy who literally walks around shirtless with a with a spray tan or maybe it's a real hand. Not. Not My cup of tea and like of super fancy sport coat jacket shorts, the cigar glasses and a hat. And it's like his thing. He's like. He's like sixty I'll I'll just say. Look. It's working like we're. Talking. That's pretty fly like Mo. Apparently, his big break was he stood outside of an astros. Game. Like on the deck and sportscenter found him and so zoomed up on him and ever since like sent like jackets, every couple of weeks halley does he does the whole. Thing. Already Jacket Guy. Gets to Sydney. How are you wearing a jacket in the middle of summering? Very. Light. Jacket. It's only because whenever I go inside, it's always like ice cold. At least I can take the jacket I prepared like it. So one of the things that we do is our stick. So you're just GONNA have to deal with it is you have to tell us a story from way back when that? tells us a little bit something about you and Kinda why you got into. Getting Yeah. you know the story I always like to tell is. I had a job. You know what brought me here to Houston from West Texas was I took a job as a project manager for a company that subsidiary under Shell and I. Started moving up the ranks there and they gave me my third promotion in February of two thousand eighteen. And I've always been an entrepreneur by Hartley. Started my first company was twenty one, a trucking company that no my business partner ended up stealing money from me, and so he folded it and I've always wanted to start businesses and jake and I had these ideas that we wanNA do around the. And anyways new cut you off because. I want to hear about you as a kid, right like this is this is still you as an adult. Right I wanNA hear about like you on the playground when you sold snickers or something you know I want to hear something we got motorcycle accidents.

"This guy wants to be a tragedy. So I got. People that don't really know what roughneck means. I what does that? What does that? What does that look like? What is it until Zach? So a roughneck is a very blue collar job, and so when you drill these wells, you have a drilling rig in, it's just as hunk of metal and steel and very dangerous job I mean if you're a roughneck someone on your crew is missing fingers or toes then. So what are you missing mashing missing nothing except maybe my dignity of been a rough neck you know. It's not a glorious job is like bottom of the barrel, but I wanted to learn the oil and gas industry from the bottom up because I come from Midland Texas right in the middle of the Permian Basin always saw guys you know driving around and Lamborghinis and Shit I was like man there must be a lot of money in that. So how did they knew that Midland's got potholes everywhere? There's like there's this guy out there anytime the world's fastest car comes out he buys it, and so you know he had a Godley when there was only a bear on, there's only ten in the world one of them was in Midland Texas. Man. These roads they get beat up with trucks. To by the newest one, every time. Buying them in. A. Rhody one, six miles boom lost ranch. So anyways. In this time, I actually started building instagram accounts when I was on offshore rigs and start doing it my free time. So I built up this instagram accounts at three hundred, thousand followers I was monetize it through advertising had like Gary, V and Tyler Pez, and some of these dudes buying on the podcast and anyway I. ended up selling it in I just I was interested in businesses outside guess. So I started an e commerce business I'm vested in. ECOMMERCE. Business on the one that I tried starting you know I put twenty grand into it failed. And then you know Tennessee that's when I met Jake and I started seeing all these things were happening in oil and gas tech you know it wasn't to. Start, you engineering mark was the end of two thousand sixteen. Yes. So you know in that timeframe I started seeing a lot of cool things happening in digital tech and the way that we started off digital wildcatters was we're having these conversations with tech founders, and at that time there was a severe lack of capital and use them for these startups..

"Mark Harrison mark who are you guys? Digital wildcatters man digital wildcat McClellan. Did you get that spayed? Spade Wildcat wildcatters what is what's wildcatter oh? What's Wall Koetter? Okay. So if you don't. Yeah coming out swinging right at the game. I think I've ever had anyone ask what is a wildcatter walkout at term that was used back in the day for oil and gas for guys at went out in drilled really risky exploratory wells. So yet famous wall you ever do that. No, I never did. Okay. Yeah there's not much. You're saying you're liar. Sling I'm putting on were digital. So we're. Into into a new a new point of history where there's a lot of people like mark over here you know that are creating new technologies and willing guests. So that's kind of the. He's the dyke's religious all-cash. Here is not even us we're not digital new. So what you're saying is you're giving the company to hit. One hundred percent I'm just doing all of this. I, don't know anything I'm just the comic. That's how it works man. Okay. Granted over two. So, yeah. That's what did you do before this way? y'All do before this. Yeah. Go ahead Jake. How far you WANNA go. Let's start. With. You have to start with the employees. What did you even meet each other? What's going on? You start off your story. Okay. Yeah. So I, was in the Marine Corps from two thousand nine is two thousand twelve believable believable probably. Did. A lot of communications hardware stuff got burnt out like I'm gonNA. Give you the startup thing. I spend a lotta time in L. A. While I was actually in. The Marines in Camp Pendleton. kind of around the whole start thing I was like this is pretty cool. I'm going to do that came back to Houston. We had a startup house essentially, it was just a house or running in the ghetto. That was like I started headquarters..

"I'm Krista as skinny. Thank you so much for sharing your time with us today. I really appreciate it and I also want to let you know. This is a special edition. I will be visiting with you alone today. I just thought with everything that is going on in the world right now that we could just spend this time talking about what's happening what's happening in the Permian and share what's on my heart so I just WanNa say thank you for being here and it's been almost a year since I ran my first Permian Perspective podcast and what a ride. It has been a short year ago. The Permian was challenged with growth pains housing schools traffic and healthcare and those were the issues that were at the forefront of our community today we are faced with a whole new set of challenges that were sparked by the corona virus which is now a global pandemic as you know and now more than ever we must be permian strong. I know that it has been an emotional week for many of you as stressful. I completely understand. I know I have been right there with you. Every step of the way worried about my kids. My husband my family. My parents my in laws. My brother a the list goes on and I understand what you're going through. I know the developments around the coveted nineteen has really intensified here with school closings and colleges finishing up the semester online the NBA suspending play. The remainder of their season March madness cancelled Disneyland. That's right the happiest place on earth has closed their theme park in California and President trump restricting travel from nearly all of Europe to the United States also this week the World Health Organization who declared the corona virus at pandemic. So I wanted to catch you up a little bit on. What's happening here in the basin with some of the news and events that we have seen here locally so that I could share that with you if you are listening around the World Pioneer Natural Resources Chief Executive Scott Sheffield told The Washington Post this week that the company is preparing for two years of low prices and will make the necessary adjustments to maintain our great balance-sheet Sheffield also told the Post that pioneer is secure. But there will be. Many bankruptcies are industries and tens of thousands of layoffs over the next twelve months also according according to the Midland reporter telegram earlier this week diamondback reported it was immediately reducing its completion crew count from nine to six and will lay down to drilling rigs in April and a third rig later in the quarter this week according to CBS seven news Apache says it will reduce its permian rig. Count Two zero over the coming weeks and plans to lower activity in Egypt in the North Sea. According to seeking out the DOT com it also announced plans to cut twenty twenty capital spending to one billion to one point two billion which is actually down from one point six billion to one point nine billion a thirty seven percent. Drop at the midpoint now. The company says it has ample liquidity throughout its fourbillion dollars undrawn revolver and flexibility to manage the nine hundred and thirty seven million dollars of bonds maturing between twenty twenty one and January of two thousand twenty three. Those are just a couple of the interesting stories. I wanted to share with you coming out of the business world. Of course we will be hearing more over the next couple of weeks and I will definitely do another follow up on what's happening businesswise here. In the basin of course we also have the University of Texas Permian Basin that is a wonderful education facility here in Odessa. Texas and they are continuing to track the rapidly evolving Kovic nineteen virus. As of right now there are no reported are known cases in the Midland. Odessa area. Now you TB is extending their spring break and hold no face to face classes from March sixteenth to the twentieth. That is what they have just announced. They will not cancel current online classes. That are in progress now during this time. Utd Faculty and staff will begin the process of preparing for a possible transition to online classes. If it's needed sometime in the future however the university will remain open during the spring semester. Of course all of this information is unfolding and by the time you listen to this podcast at will have changed even more but I hope that I can bring a little bit of hope to you during this time. What it all boils down to is uncertainty when we are uncertain about what the future holds. It is easy to become fearful right. Just go to the grocery store you can see the toilet papers out here locally also water and of course hand sanitizer but I wanNA remind you something that. My husband reminded me of today. He said do not. Fear is in the Bible three hundred sixty five times one for each day of the year. If there's one thing I know about all of the leaders of the companies I mentioned above and those leading in the Permian is they are fearless so as this may be Challenging Week. I referred to one of my favorite quotes. You know how I love quotes right. Well this is a good one. Remember this story to will run out of rain. Yes this too shall pass and so to all my friends in the Permian. We will prevail and be better and stronger. I wish you and your families a healthy week please be safe and I look forward to seeing you all soon. Thank so much for joining us. This concludes this special edition of Permian perspective. The story behind the oil and gas leaders in the Permian Basin of course remember my favorite quotes on life. Matas dream big. Believe in yourself and never give up you make it a great day. Hey everybody Alex here. With the events on deck for the next month we have some exciting things coming up to happy hours one in Pittsburgh and one in Denver so the first one will be happening on March twenty second at Bubbas Gourmet Burgers and beer. "What's up digital wildcatters Jake Corley here Collin some parts but we had a good time there so then I got out and I was like you know what am I gonNa do at school I got the Gi Bill. Now plus I had the Hazelwood I can get a master's and have it paid for so Emmett School for eleven gt to which is very rare and I was like okay well that's interesting they staples in Maserati grants Rosemont like okay well that's nice too so I asked him what does he do he's he's and then it wasn't until concrete his job too early two thousand eighteen we linked up and he was like well I don't know what we're GonNa do and then we got into the wells and we got into a few other things introvert and like you're not a fucking I don't know maybe that's just me calling on the not that'd be Vietnam so we started doing that in two thousand sixteen very first episode of that episode is definitely an acquired skill for anybody who's you know kind of curious just like anything you just get a practice in so that was interesting because at the same hey bills next month or aluminium company puts team and then next everybody's looking at you for answers on something or some kind of insights and so that was a very yeah is two thousand and sixteen I think yeah and so do you WanNa fill in your story yeah I was GonNA say calling us at our stories are intertwined yeah not point for yeah so I'm from Midland Texas originally from the Permian Basin right in the middle of it and I feel like graduating high school out of Midland you've got to career pass right maybe maybe three you either friends and said Hey I'm going to introduce you to someone that ended up being a guy at savannah drilling which was a Canadian drilling company that move down to the immune and pretty much their thesis for hiring was we don't WanNa hire any west Texas roughnecks have bad habits we want brand new people that we can the Canadian way that was their superior way of thinking so I got a job and so you know I still remember man I'm sorry on behalf of Canadians and as a Canadian can say that obviously sorry for anything honest sorry no military and all you have is three canoes and a couple of paddles learn two things to say I'm sorry and to drink with people that's why Canadians are so good it's gotta be you gotta be friendlier exactly 'cause you otherwise you'll get your ass kicked as I remember in that office in you know the the supervisor told me like you know you'll probably start in like two weeks on someone drops off of a crew all right and I go home in two hours later he's like hey someone just quit get your boots going out tonight I was like what the fuck I remember getting out to that rig for a night shift and just like Intel whose new on hundred drilling site you know they go out there and they just look to the top of the dairy okay yeah and I was scared to be honest you know she was nineteen years old and anyways fell in love with it not not so much the rough making part that you know that fucking sucks you know anyone that's listening to the roughnecks attest to that but just fascinated I was fascinated about what we were doing and you know I'm just an entrepreneur by you know default that's how my mind's wired and so the entire time you know I'll be there tripping pipe all day just thinking about the economics of owning drilling and I was like man someday I wanna be Israel most far as pe- at the time and I want to own RSP I went on the fucking wells how do I do that and so I spent a couple years drilling and at that point no they worked my way up the ladder is working derricks and they're talking about making me an assistant driller I don't WanNa get too heavy on the drilling side I said I think I've learned enough and drilling I WANNA learn completions so when I started running Marlin and you know this was I don't know two thousand twelve timeframe and I mean we were just fracking like motherfucker of one hundred twenty hours a week just on stage work you know just living out on frank locations and did that for a couple of years and then we actually got squeezed out of Midland by the housing crisis and so my wife and I were running a house in Midland in the landlord on our last month said Hey were selling the house in a month you gotta find somewhere new to move and there was a ninety eight percent occupancy rate in midland in probably over reacted a little bit like fuck it we're moving onto midland we're going somewhere else and so my wife is eight months pregnant we threw all shitting u-haul limited say definitely overreacted allied fighter flight but Millon's you know if you want out of somewhere especially true to women it's a black hole you know it's hard to get out of midland so make me into that conversation a little bit with with my wife the I don't think actually my wife is an extreme risk taker too so I don't even remember the conversation but because it wasn't that significant it was like hey packer shit up and move and at the time I was working for pioneer energy services they had a yard in south Texas and Victoria it and they were Nice enough to transfer me to that yard and so we moved on to Victoria and it was not the same atmosphere as the Permian at all it was not making as much honey no significant pay-cut and manage it sucks I don't want to go back to midland and so we spent six months there and then I got a call from the Canadian he was my Taylor broke out with an award for years and he had taken a job in Houston as a project manager for and venture global technology running expandable casing and they'd hired him because they needed a day a Canadian citizen to run jobs up in Canada they needed another guy and he said hey he's like I know a guy we should definitely talk to and so they call me up minis like get to Houston tomorrow and Did I gotTa Work Tomorrow He's like each fucking Aso peer until I call us and I'm like I'm not going to be a work tomorrow and I drive up the Houston and they gave me the job that day and this is in two thousand fourteen maybe six months before the downturn at the same time is that internship that you almost with those two jobs yes so yes I was actually going through this program with Cigna Engineering and CONACO Phillips and was a six month program and they would take you to train you to be a drilling consultant so you would you would take classes through cigna engineering and then you beyond side on a drill rig at the end of that program Conaco will take the students have that program and at the time they it'd only it would only look at college graduates and I don't have a college degree in and for whatever reason they decided to take a risk on me and bring me in and I just started blowing all these college graduates out of the water on all the testing and then plus I had you know four years or so filled experience at that point and twenty hour work weeks and so it was like a six it was six step interview process and I was on step four gone for a month and a half and adventure second you got the job and so I had to call up Sydney engineering and I was like hey I'm not going to be joining the program it was funny because you know Kinda like they actually got snubbed they sent me a rejection letter week later we've decided not to pick for the program motherfuckers I told you short no I quit on quit on you reject me I rejected you yeah so that's what brought my wife and I up to Houston and that was about five and a half years bill and so like I said it was right before the downturn you know I was extending no told us can make you know a couple hundred grand it's GonNa get to travel the world we had all the our national work and I was excited about it snowed only worked in West Texas and South Texas and then the downturn has happened in all of that international work went away but with the said you know I still got to see a lot of cool things I worked in every American play I spent a month on the north slope spent a Lotta time deepwater Gulf of Mexico on drill ships so I saw in anything and everything between when it came to oiling guests and so I did that for four years and then at the beginning of two thousand eighteen I quit my job I just quit and the reason I quit was a worked on call twenty four seven with no days off which only ended up being about four months out of the year that I would travel and be out in the field but the problem was like I can even schedule lunch someone in the the you know the opportunity costs was too big now I may have a lunch scheduled for David in that morning get called out to a rig out in the Gulf of me what's going on I'm gone for a month and so it's hard to plan your life or make any moves when you're living like and so two thousand eighteen both you're both sort of in a transition and you've we've been friends and yes we met say early two thousand sixteen yeah we'll ask us like how how the hell did you guys meet calling me a message on Lincoln I have no clue how you slid and his team and then we tried to link up for lunch and it just it would be kept missing each other and then one day I was going through in cleaning my inbox or looking for something and I saw call it in there and I was like oh we never got together so I sent him a message back when I was a kid you WanNa grab lunch so then we met at a place called the Greek place Nico Nico Nico Nico's yes we pull up in and you know that one hour lunch in a three and a half hour lunch and I was like I listen to this podcast and he was like Oh what about this episode and then we'd like dove into it and it was like this about cars guns stepbrothers when you guys best friends you you obviously have really good chemistry which I think is a y the podcast were expe- working with your partner is like awesome so yeah I mean people feed off it and always curious I'm actually shocked you've been working together since two thousand eighteen because it seems like you've been really close for a long time I mean I totally agree we did coffee shop working for a long time I don't think we ever really talked about that we don't we don't really know what we were working on a little walking down let's let's pivot to that because I mean it's actually funny sitting at the table with the three you guys heard your podcast Mark I get to know you a little bit but you guys are relentless entrepreneurs and I feel like I don't belong here necessarily because I kind of was an accidental entrepreneur Mo- mostly personality related just because I'm begum loud and in big public companies like it's not always is welcome you can't I I'm I think I'm very difficult person to have worked for you but he that's that's pretty much a running background ruth -tunities that they that this has opened up for you and how it became a thing yes so you know like I said I when I quit my job in two thousand eighteen I quit and I told my boss things like well what are you going to do and I kind of feel like a dumb ass when I'm like I don't know and you know I have a wife and three kids and the sky just thinks I'm fucking insane You know that lead into a lot of things I mean I quit and I cashed out my 401k I was like you know all this will that money doesn't last as long do you think it will spend the tax bill yeah exactly yeah he paid thirty percent tax on your 401k disappears quick but you know we are looking like shit we gotta we gotta do something quick and so we started consulting we saw a need in the market for emerging technology outside.
