"jake arrieta" Discussed on Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney

"There's not a ton of swing and miss right now. So they're offense. They hit the ball extremely hard, but they pitch extraordinarily well too. And by the way, they play great defense, and that's what Jose Siri, who might be the best defensive center Fielder in baseball right now on the shelf. You know, they run the base as well. They haven't been thrown out on a tag up this year. They go first to third more than anyone. It's just those little things that they do. They ambush. Absolutely ambush first pitches. They're hitting four 94 when they swing and make contact. On the first pitch. I just look at the rays as the perfect combination of not just analytics for which they're known, but process as well. Because what the rays have done is they've had enough successes individually, where if you don't buy into the process that they have, then you're the outlier. You're the fool. You're the clown, because if the rays tell you something, generally speaking, the handle it pretty well, they have a very good coaching staff upon whom they rely to communicate all of what they know with players. And generally speaking, it's a pretty happy festive Clubhouse, not only because they're winning, but because I think the players feel like they're put in the best position to go out and be the best versions of themselves. So I had this really interesting conversation the other day with a longtime baseball person. And I said that the common denominator I think among the best baseball ops people in the sport are that they have some humility. And Eric neander to me is a maybe the best example that Chris antonetti would be another one. That there's an assumption of what they don't, that there's something out there that they don't know. When and you know this, if you talk to Eric and say, boy, you guys are having a great year, the sound of your year is knocking on wood. 'cause he's, he had just assumed there's bad news coming around the corner. You know, I think it absolutely, he and Kevin cash, Kevin cash is the same way that Kyle Snyder, their pitching coach, is the same type of personality. And it really works well for them. It does. Alex anthropologists, I think, is the same way I remember when I was, I remember when I was reporting the arm. Alex was running the Blue Jays. And he had three young, very talented starters. Right out of high school was Noah syndergaard, Aaron Sanchez, and Justin nicolino. And they were limiting them to one or two innings per start, which didn't make any sense to me because these were all kids who were throwing a hundred pitches in their high school stocks. And their arms had been stretched out. So why would you tighten them back up? And I called Alex up and I asked him, why are you doing this? And I will never forget what he said. He said, I don't know. And I thought that was a very interesting admission, a very candid admission for him to make, but he didn't want to pretend like he understood what was going on here. And I think that curiosity, that same curiosity, I don't know what's going on, but I would like to try and figure it out is what drives the guardians and the rays in some of these organizations that despite their low payrolls and despite their lack of lack of, frankly, all of the things that the larger markets have have still figured out a way to be successful. And that is that is something that I think is worth admiring. I'm never going to admire a small payroll for the efficiency of it. I think that's kind of obnoxious, honestly, but I will admire the work that people do under the constraints that they have. A GM can't go to an owner and say, give me $200 million. And then the owner says, okay, some GMs are limited and they're doing the best they can with the budget they have. And being able to succeed in spite of your owner is quite often, I think, a sign of excellence in your ability to execute something. I have three quick hitters before you go. The Saint Louis Cardinals off to a surprisingly poor start. How do they fix this? Because Jack flaherty, as you know it in your piece, he didn't look that great early on and they need a frontline guy in that rotation. Yeah, I hope Jack flaherty turns things around because back in back in 19, his second half, it was, I don't know, it reminded me of Jake Arrieta in his Cy Young season. Like that's how good flaherty was. Just absolutely dominant in that second half. And I'd love to see him get back to that. But really, buster, it's just about pitching with the Cardinals. Is it not? I'm shocked matte liberator who's carving a triple-A hasn't gotten the call at this point, but it's almost like the Cardinals with Michaelis and with flaherty and with mats, they have Jordan Montgomery, like they have guys who should be good. They just haven't been. And the reason I picked the brewers in the central is because I did not trust the Cardinals pitching.

"jake arrieta" Discussed on The Points League

"Feel like people don't do enough for the reasons that you state at the very beginning, people have gotten so ingrained in their heads that they have to pick up a starting pitcher to get points and the reality is you actually don't you need to find points wherever they're available and in a lot of cases, the best points are actually hitters to take off, which is weird to say, but like you have less risk because the worst that the absolute worst thing that could happen is they strike out four times you lose one point. But more often than not, they're going to score at least four. And if you can find the right matchup, you can get 6, 7, 8, ten points, if it's the right header, if it's Jake Arrieta and you can pick up a lefty mash, masher, ice cream cores, you know, not to talk about the season before, but like when we did the roto league, I didn't have a second baseman. I just played whatever second baseman was going to be playing in Colorado, and that was how I went about managing it. Because I just feel like people don't realize that that is an option because the pitching pool gets so depleted, particularly at this point in the season because everyone's got the good starters. They've probably already picked up the prospects on the come that are going to be debuting like I would have loved to have played Joe Ryan on Wednesday, but you know what? He was already with Matt nice swinger. Right. So like, you know, that sort of thing didn't happen, you know, four or 5 years ago. So I really feel like people might want to look at taking other options rather than just hitting probable on their filter and just taking whoever's playing Detroit that day. Because that's not always going to be the right answer anymore. And they're also less quality starts now than there were three or four years ago, which is basically what everyone's applying for. The low strikeout quality start, and those just really don't exist. Yeah, I think there's an opportunity in the lead to look at hitting hit streaming to some degree. And I remember like the very early part of the league kind of realizing when we realized collectively the value in streaming pictures, but before that, I was like, yeah, I was in a slump. I'll just drop them. And you're like, well, no, you maybe don't want to do that. Like write it out. You know, this guy may turn it around. But having the flexibility in your lineup to do that is critical too. So I picked up when I was planning for rob, I got not excited, but thought like, okay, I want to pick up Jonathan VR because he's going to hit lead off of the mets. They're playing 7 games that week. So I'm going to get 35 at bats or whatever. It's great. And then the second half of the week, like in that weekend, he sucked dick. He was like, one for ten, 7 K's and I was like, this I beat him beat robs. I'm like, I can't write Jonathan VR in one of these spots 'cause he's not gonna have all of this there. And then Nelson Cruz got a big alley boo boo on his forearm, his forms are the size of the fucking Mars. But suddenly now he can't hit, so he was kind of going to be in that day to day when no one you can't risk any of that in the championship matchup. So the original the Nelson Cruz rule applying, in fact, in the playoffs, ten years later, hilarious. So I had to make two hitters to start off the week because that was the only way I was going to contain it. So I picked up I picked up a hundred dozen because I really liked him. But he was going to play every week every day. Yeah. Good enough power, which was going to be the thing that would hopefully flip it in my favor. And he gets you home runs. So sorry, you have one Monday and Tuesday. Yeah. And then he kind of tapered off and he had him diesel matchups like Cleveland and somebody else had to get into the royals were playing, but. This week. It was a kid that's hitting lead off of the gnats and it's doing pretty hot. It's some good games and stole some bases and it was a good use there, but those are two ads. Those are two of the 5 there and you only have so much opportunity from that point out. So I had to ride with Eric fetty on two starts. And because I had him on a carry over from rob or whatever. So there's an opportunity there if you can plan it out right and you're not getting screwed on a guy getting a forearm borders or something. To plan your lineup. Yeah, basically exactly what you laid out for Jonathan VR was the reason that I went with Jean Segura. The Phillies had 7 games that finals a week. They were playing against Baltimore against lefties, he's sitting second right in front of Harper. The implied run total for the Phillies was like 6, which is like insanely high. And then the Phillies collectively just sucked ass. Despite having a high expected run, so it was and part of it was like, I knew wander would be coming back and then I could plug him in 'cause I knew it was rehabbed and went pretty well, but yeah, I ended up going with Jean. He was awful and I ended up wishing I had just waited till Tuesday and picked up kind of bell and played him. And he did go off, but Brandon bell was basically one Soto at Coors field. Like people needed. Yeah. You have the best season of his career. He's 34. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, the giant season's been fantastic, but like, yeah, he's a very undervalued player in our league. He's kind of like adjusted Turner esque player where he just doesn't get any respect that the auction because he'll have nagging injuries and maybe he only plays 5 days a week, but man, he's in there. He's really fucking good. And then, yeah, like so you kind of alluded to the Devin Williams pickup that I made, which was really frustrating last week because I picked him up on Monday and then it came out on Thursday that he had actually been injured for an entire week. And that was why he didn't play. I had no idea until I got the notification. I was like, oh, that would have been good to know. And then like, on Sunday, after everything had been decided, he came in for an ending and struck out about it. It was like, oh, I'm really glad that you could contribute those two points that are now completely meaningless that I really would have liked to have had earlier. So there was that and then obviously there was the Tyler Anderson game, which I just gotta tell you about my night. So the Tyler Anderson game took place on Saturday night and I had decided I wanted to go watch the Blue Jays because Robbie ray was also pitching. So I wanted to watch him. So I went to this brewery here in London called toboggan brewery and it has big bars, all the TVs. So I've got the Maple Leafs game. They have a preseason game against the Canadians that I'm trying to kind of be aware of because everyone else is really watching that game. And then I have basically this big TV all to myself with the twins versus the Blue Jays and Robbie ray ended up having a pretty decent start, but he really labored through the entire thing. Like he had a few strikeouts that he walked a ton of hours. It was more vintage Robbie ray, the Robbie ray that we knew from the Diamondbacks where he walked the yard, but then would strike out all the other players. And then like angels and Simmons, tomahawk the ball, like almost right at his head for a single, which scored one of the runs for the twins. But so like I'm watching, I'm watching that, and I have waited a while to pick up Tyler Anderson because I didn't want it to be like a late second scratch or something like that. So I waited so probably about 45 minutes before the Mariners started against the angels. And I'm watching Robert red and I keep looking down, it's like, oh, okay. So Thailand or Cindy's left handed and hopefully can neutralize a tawny. And then he had pitched really well. Since he had been traded

"But i don't know how many opportunities are coming after that. Yeah it's it's going to be interesting. Brought said that you know when he was asked about the hamstring injury which is why he was put on. I l. said It's one of those things he i'll read exactly what he said what he says. It's one of those things where i think. He thinks he's fine. Something's going on with the way he's pitching i think is best. We just take care of that. So they're going to optimize. This time on the. I'll give him the rest and then i think they're definitely gonna come back after the all star break us the time off. You throw some bullpens throw some throw some side sessions and then come back after the all star break and see like hey. Is he a viable peace for the rotation as valuable piece for the pitching staff and then take it from there. Because you know it's it's unrealistic to to have them continue if if he's not making out in the second inning like he has. The last two starts in. Jake arrieta knows that the cubs know that of the whole team is aware that the fans are aware of that too. Obviously it's it's you know. I think they wanna give him one more chance because he was emphatic. About it the cubs they have more advanced metrics more advanced data than we do. They they might. They probably see something that you know if they can correct something. Maybe you know. They'll see the jake arrieta they're hoping to get When they signed him in the off season yeah they were really high end when they sent him. The officers in they really believed Tell me how to obviously worked with area in the past. Mike rosello in additional. Ross catching ariana. And so there's this long standing relationship that they truly believe they were able to unlock something that he was unable to do in in philadelphia over the last few years in between chicago stint so You know if they're able to get back to that and look he was really good for the first five six starts of the year like he carried the rotation at a time when kyle hendricks zach davies. Were struggling out of the gate. In april area was good. I mean he was. He was legitimately good. He was getting some swings and misses. He was limiting baserunners yet to fifty seven area. I think in the first five or six outing so he helped the teams first win in the fan base welcomed him back with open arms so things have definitely taken a serious left. Turn since then it will certainly be interesting to see how the next two weeks or so play out in that regard but just in the short term andy. His rotation spy is coming up for the first half finale on sunday against the cardinals going into the all star break. Obviously he's not making that start. Corey is up from from aaa iowa. Coal stewart by the way also went on the injured list on monday. So he's not an option but justin steelers. We talked about. He's working his way back. He threw forty seven pitches wednesday night with aaa iowa so it comes down to one of those two guys abbas deal and maybe a bullpen game league into the break yet could be williams to would be on a normal rice going into that start..

"It'll be interesting to see. I think with k b. The interesting thing is he's he's in the all star game As of right now like he's still committed to playing like he he's he he won't have the full four days off so it'll be interesting to see what happens there but the injury front for a kris bryant hobby buys is very important because of the comes do intended to compete and be buyers at the deadline. Whatever like it's all contingent on chris. Brian anthony rizzo and hobby. Buys being the core of the team and leading the offense and leading the team to where they want to go yet for sure we actually we seen havi really wake up on the last few days and he's honesty's looked good you know. He's taken his walks. He's not chasing as much swing and missing as much so that would be huge if he's able if he has missed some time. And you brought up a good point about the all-star break with the four days coming up it to me. It seems kind of hard even though these are like must win games and as must win as as they really could be for the cubs. It's it's hard to look at their history of hampshire injuries really just around the game but also the cubs this year and think that you know bryant is going to be able to to get out there and play depending on the severity of that and how he wakes up today or tomorrow and stuff it you know it. There's a very reasonable path here where he just doesn't play. These final. four games takes essentially a week or so off including the all star break doesn't play in the all star game and then comes back for that series in arizona's start next weekend so that's definite possibility in certainly makes things more difficult for the cubs To try to get back into this racist we talked about. But i think ryan to pair would be huge. Just russell always talked about being able to set up kimbrel to pera chafe in to see that for another couple of weeks here possibly like that. That chain that could change the calculus entirely. It'd be a huge factor and pair needed a break to like. He had the calf injury. A couple other. Non arm related Little issues at popped up. They said but i think just for for him to get that break for him to get right physically That workload really impacted him and he could come back maybe fresher than ever. So we'll see. I think that could be huge as well On the health topic on topic of performance and everything else jake. Arrieta had another tough star. Tuesday night at wrigley was unable to get through the second inning for the second straight. Start really over the last two months ten starts. He is in your a almost nine. He has certainly struggled in with his command and just isn't getting the results that he wants but he was emphatic. That he has a lot left in the tank. This isn't the end for him that he has felt good like in terms of his stuff. And it's true. I mean he's throwing the the radar gun is still lighting up. Some ninety three ninety. Four's in that last game on tuesday night but yet the command is the biggest thing is getting hit hard. He's walking guy's hitting guys So he's on the i l. now with a hamstring. Injury gives him certainly like at least ten days year to get right physically into to work on his mechanics. Get back into his his. I dunno get back into a groove or at least like have an opportunity to see what happens any. I guess where do you. Where do you see things going with area in the cubs here like it. Sounds like he's probably gonna get at least one more opportunity with the team coming off the i l..

"Yesterday. Actually, we were in the eye dot bullpen and it gets heated. Sometimes in the meetings. You and I don't agree on everything. It's not like it's all No Cherries and roses in there and We were discussing Jake Ariana and you're like DFA, and I said no money injured list. He says he still has something left. You owe it to him to try and work out his Issues. You don't have some top prospect the miners itching to get his spot in the rotation. And so let's just see how it shakes out Well yesterday, stunningly. Yes, he tweeted it. I retweeted stunning. Uh, They put him on the injured list with right hamstring tightness. Now, he says, it's been bothering him since May. Mhm. Right. Well, you're going to have his pitching has been bothering me since May two. Same here, But I'm not on the injured list, so he is going to have With the All Star break up. He's going to have a good 23 weeks to work on his issues, get his hamstring right and worked in the bullpen. Stop reporting that I'm just telling you, I don't want to hear that. You know, That's not true that we'll never report that. But let him go to the bullpen and work his issues out the pitching coach. That's the part. I don't give me the he's got to get his hamstring, right. Don't do that. Don't be disingenuous to the audience with that. That's why I said that. I've got a straight down his hips in a mocking tone. No, don't do that. Yeah. Does he need as straight and stuff out? Yes, but it should be with another ball club. So I send them No, stop. You send the message, pal. What message are you said, get him out of it, And he knows he's got nothing left. He's throwing lettuce up there. It's terrible. This whole thing when you're holding onto Well, you was so important to the 16 team. Well, that's great. What does that do for you In 2021? You knew that he was done when they signed them. Yeah, I didn't like to say. Well, I didn't either. Jed told us like, Well, you know, Lester doesn't have much anymore. We just felt that it was best to make the Based on what His checkered career is interesting to me, Ariana, the up and down right, All right, Rick Sutcliffe, who have really enjoyed by the way I've I've enjoyed sudden these broadcasts. That's great. I'm a J D fan. But I like that such there because he feels so much at home does. It doesn't feel like he's like on the road during ESPN. He's just comfortable in the chair. Wrigley Field, his franchise. I'm just talking about the Cubs, man. You just you just up there. Just having a good time with his buddy bug. I enjoy the broadcast, but he talked about how when he was around Baltimore and saw the good stuff, Mary. I said, You know what? He's not posture, but it could be something and we saw him with the Cubs and how he was able to get better. And then it's just been up and down with the Phillies. Not so much and then, but I just think that he's in a golf and his career man. Like like there's no reason for him to be on this ball club. You and I saw history together sitting side by side in Milwaukee. Watching guys need a mound visit. The bottom of the first one is what seven runs when a seven run lead. He's got nothing, man. Sometimes you just have to cut the cord, and that's how you d f A guys. See if you are not a D F A guys go to 35th invest. We'll show you how to do it. Take that, Danny. Do you feel like they should give Jake a chance to work his issues out in the bullpen, he says. I still have a lot left in the tank. The season is over for the Cubs, right? We we, We all agree they're not making the playoffs are eight games back there in third place in the division. They're not making the playoffs for me, Just like we were talking about how you know the other guys know their fate. Just let Jake area to stay on the roster because of what he meant to the team in 2015 and 2016 hoodie. When you said, send a message I almost jumped through the glass to grab you. You send a message to to Al Salih. You send a message to guys that are on the team in the future. You don't send a message to Jake area to like. That's not a message. You send the team by by punishing a guy that has meant so much to the franchise. I'm I'm okay with the farewell tour by six. I'm okay with it. I love you from her 16 championship. I love you Don't designation area to you. Just so especially let me ask you this question. He not sucks. He sucks. He's horrible. I don't disagree, and they should have kept job. Lester for $5 million instead of Jake area could have got up for three. I agree that kept you Darvish. There's so many should are things that the Cubs should have done. But sending a message to Jake Arrieta now is just absolutely pointless. David Ross even talked about what area to means to the organization. Could you imagine that conversation? Jed Hoyer? Who owes his World Series ring and probably his promotion to the But you know the position of GM and president to Jake Arrieta and David Ross, who owes so much to Jake Arrieta going in and having that conversation with him. I don't. I can't put my finger on it The You know there's a lot of hard contact. Um Was like the shape of the secondary stuff. Is not there. The command doesn't seem to be consistent. Um Yeah. Park your cop car. We knew Tracy. We try to fix that. But right right up to And now I'm not exactly sure have to go back and watch some stuff. It's it's different seeing the life view than this side, but it looks like there's just not A lot of sharpness to the to the secondary stuff, and maybe a little bit of lack of command. Jake, are you concerned? Your career may be winding down? Not even not even close. You know, Bruce, this.

"Yeah don't laser focus on framing the way that we have but i'm pretty confident that if you were to give me that test trying to remember if i ever did that in an article or sam did or someone did. I'm usually the first to say that. Although i went to scout school i'm the furthest thing from a scout but when it comes to framing i think if i took a test like that i would do pretty well. I hope someone wants to send it to me. I'll i'll take it but just having written about it and talked to players about it so much done of this week in catcher framing series episcopal perspectives. For awhile i've watched so many framing gifts. That i think i could recognize it pretty well. Now i understand. That's probably a a niche skill. I think that you would not you think that like our listeners. If they have doubts pick it up more quickly than they imagine because when most people are watching you know. They're watching an at bat from the center field. Camera there watching the hitter more than they're watching the catcher and so part of it is as you said just focusing your attention in a different spot and then you will really be like. Wow that guys good or wow no is not an yeah. I think that you start to pick up on the the nuances pretty quickly and the nice thing is that it's just so many pitches or gain so you get a lot of reps really really fast if you wanna if you wanna try to hone in on sort of who's good and who's bad and if you're trying to do that in you're interested like i would start in a simple way and just look at the leaderboards who is actually a good framer and watch them specifically and see kind of what they do and go back to the leaderboard and find a bad framer so that you have something to compare and contrast you. It's like you know if you were if you're going to a game and you're sitting behind home plate and you were like trying to put grades on fast on breaking balls and you'd never seen a good one before. How could you do that so go watch a good name first and then watch you know the people who are gonna catch for the white sox from now on and you'll kind of get a sense of just come back soon. Yes money grondahl. Yeah that's that's how framing techniques have circulated around the majors even having talked to some catcher zoo cave emulate this guy who's good at framing. Maybe he goes down to one knee or whatever it is. I will borrow that technique. So i saw some quotes from stasi in otani in madden saying nice things how they worked together and how he called a game so i hope that that becomes the routine. Not that i have anything against kurt suzuki as person i'm sure he's a nice guy but Yeah i'd rather be watching stasi with otani is i'm hanging on. Every pitch and a tiny threw two pitches that i think were slower than sixty eight miles per hour. He through a couple slow curves his to slowest pitches of the season. Sixty seven point seven and sixty seven point eight and he had one sequence where it was like. Sixty eight mph curveball. Ninety eight mile per hour fastball packed. Back it makes for a beautiful pitch overlay gift. So i'd recommend that people check that out. So i just want to end with a quick step last year related to something that happened this week doodles awesome based so jake. Arrieta had his second straight disaster. Adding for the cubs wasn't.

"That's the only way to watch. As we're inside the first Midwest Bank studio. Here's a here's a tweet. And then I want to tell you about Ariana. We already punted on the season trading away. Darvish and Cara Teeny making the playoffs seems like a pride gift. At this point. He's right, like Pass inside about punting on being down. Six. They punted when they were even You know, they probably punted when they were even Yeah, And you Darvish like that's the head scratcher, right? Because Did you really get a whole boatload of prospects to really shape the future of the team? I don't know. I mean, I don't think that that's the way it was pitched. But the one thing that you're missing is a lead starting a space. So you know that if this team was really going to compete for the division for the wild card, try to win a championship This year, you Darvish in a Cubs uniform would have been helpful, and also he's been pitching very well. In your uniform Like last year. He was fantastic for the Chicago Cubs, and he really settled into what his role was with this team being the lead guy on this staff. And so I think like That's the that is the main question mark to me when you look at this whole situation because Would imagine since you moved Darvish in the off season. The idea towards the trade divine is that you are now going to move pieces when you get to that point, and the team played better than expected out of the gate. It was fun. The first two months were fun. It was fun. But but also Sylvie like that's fleeting right, because, like it's not sustainable, because that right now and being 6.5 back of the Brewers and off of that, that bad series and the terrible disaster last game up there in Milwaukee, you also know that in the wild card, you're not close. And so what do you do the rest of this year, and I think that's what it gets back to the the overarching conversation. What passing is pointing to is like today in sports, if you know Early on that you're not going to win a championship. Many people would prefer to go the tank route and to just blow up your season, then to try and enjoy in trying to get something out of your season. Even if the best that you can do is the runner up for the wild card position. You know, I'm saying so, like it's all about expectations at this point, and I don't want the Cubs to tank or go on this. Three year rebuild, and I think Jed sort of ruled that out last off season where he said, You can't do that anymore. I believe that the Cubs do open up the pocketbooks even if they don't sign bias. Rizzo and Bryant That you still go out? Maybe you sang trade Turner. What is he? He's a 28 year old shortstop on free agency. Whatever you go for Trevor story. What if you go after Corey Seager? There are guys That if you flip these guys, right if you flip Kimbrel, right, if you flip Chafin correctly and you maybe get your next Cal Hendrix and you get your next Jake Arianna that way, just like they did the first time and then you supplement them with signing guys. Maybe not your guys on the roster now, But why not? You could still go back to Javi bias after trading him. And say, All right, Javi, We got something for you. Now we want to pay you to here and look, he may say to you know, you pissed me off. You traded me. I'm not coming back. I'll take lives with another team. Fine. Then you go out and you signed Trevor story. Or you sign trade Turner or you signed Seeger like I mentioned, so. I think there are different ways to do this here. If you really creative. I don't want the cubs to tank. I think the funny response would be okay. We trade you away. Do you want to sign here in the off season as a free agent? No. You trade us away. It's like, Hey, bro. You You haven't played well, the last couple of seasons like would you expect like, Maybe that is the smarter approach like Kris Bryant hobby by his walk. Let him go. And then use your money wisely signed free agents that are going to produce at level or higher than what you expect him. Go and trade them now. Well, I mean, I'm saying, yeah. Yeah, trade them now get something back for them. And then if you really are concerned, because I know a lot of lot of Cub fans and you may even fall into this category. You really want to see them in a Cubs uniform for their career? You know, like some of these guys like Rizzo If there is no need to be a cup for life for you, if his back is healthy, I mean, no, no one has to be anything for life like J. And Here's the Joan too with Jake. How's that going? And this is my point there. I know you have a really good question to Tyler. J. Kerry added To me today's the eight year anniversary of the best trade in Cubs history. It's not even close the best trade in Cubs history is they went out and they traded. I believe it was Feldman and Clevinger, their backup catcher. I believe For Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strope. Pedro Stroke was a consistent reliever for them for all the years they won. Jake Ariana opened that window without Jake area to doing what he did in 15. Being great at baseball being great and dominating, winning in Pittsburgh in the wild card game, like if they don't win that wild card game is the window open in 16. He won two World Series games by the way in 16, like If that doesn't happen in 15, I don't believe the window opens, so he opened the window. And I think this is another good example of Hey. Going down Memory Lanes fund. But if they really don't have anything, how much fun is it? Watching Jake with the war of negative 1.4 and E. R a of 5.57 and a whip of 1.569. David Ross was asked the other day. Hey, are you going to replace Ariana? And he said, I don't know who we replace them with. To me. That's the sign that the Cubs stink that the Cubs should punt on a six game lead. They can't even replace the guy. Who is the 557 e R A. They've got no starting pitching. This team cannot win a thing. This could be the blessing in disguise to get guys like me. Who was we're really happy about them Winning. I thought it was a joy. It was a joyful ride. It was a joy ride. You know you were letting your hair going. The wind the windows. The sunroof was open. Yes, here It was a very degrees and it was beautiful And you're like this is great. Now all of a sudden, there's a huge storm cloud. What do you do? You close the damn roof. You close it and your your pant. I think that's what's amazing. Is that David Ross giving you the honest answer? I don't I don't know. Who are we going to also? We have. We got to roll him out there every fifth day. We gotta so you have a question for me, Tyler, don't you And for all Cubs fans, 3323776. So you heared Bryant's name you hereby is his name. You hear Contreras name in all of these trade conversations. Where is Kyle Hendricks? His name? Because could he be your version of what the socks had with Jose Quintana a little bit of control on him. He's pitched very well for your team. He's given you a lot of good years. You could probably get a sizable return for someone like Kyle Hendricks. A controllable really good starter. Would you trade Kyle Hendricks? 3123323776..

"Hit balls into outs pro-rated. Over the full year there would be about another. Three thousand total hits. We tend to think of shifts as the dominant new defensive tactic of the last decade. I've argued before that. This viewpoint is mistaken. Infield ships are extremely visible but the case for their efficacy is mixed. They probably reduce bab sometimes but may exact offsetting penalty that makes the overall on offense minimal. This analysis suggests ships are more like the tip of a defensive efficiency iceberg. That's walloping offense across the league so this is pretty fascinating. I think if rob is onto something because abbott beat down is a big factor in offense and batting average down people talk strikeouts and that's important and people talk about how the ball is behaving this year and that matters too but i think that matters a little less than many people have made it out to like. We're still at a almost all time. High home run rate and run rate on contact. So it's the bab declined. That is really notable. Like to ninety two last year which i think was the lowest since nineteen ninety-two which was before expansion and before another ball change probably and that was a weird pandemic year so you could kind of write it off but now to eighty eight and we haven't seen to eighty something in a really long time and i don't know if that'll come up a bit as as the summer goes on but not enough to be where it was in recent season. So that's pretty significant. I don't know what you may have this piece. Yeah i thought it was really interesting and it. It mostly just struck me how little i thought about this before which i think he when he gets the idea that the shift in field is visible. Like you see that so clearly and even when it comes to infield positioning. That's not the shift but just like shading your fielders pretty significantly looking pretty likely to notice that. But i'm usually not even if i'm outta game where i have the ability to look wherever i want to end. I'm not at the mercy of the television cameras which certainly aren't going to show you the outfielders backing up a tiny bit. Even if i'm deciding what to look at an usually not looking out there at least not closely enough to notice when someone is seeking a few steps back in positioning themselves like this so yeah it makes a lot of sense i think it has a pretty compelling argument with the the data. He's together here and it was mostly just striking to me. That seems like it has been in front of for awhile. It would explain a lot of the babba steph. We've seen which as you said is just so unusual and i think that you wrote about Last year in the pandemic. Yeah yeah because it started super low and then it rebounded a bit but it still ended up pretty low and it's weird because exit lassie's keep increasing especially this year with the ball. Maybe being or smaller it's leaving the bat faster and so it it's odd and that's kind of been a mystery for a long time about why babylon has been pretty stable for decades. Even as other changes have happened. And so that made it seem like everything was kind of constant but maybe it was some changes that were offsetting other changes and so it was hard to see on the surface. So yeah like you said. Even if you're in the park you know you would notice if you saw like a side by side shot of outfielder playing ten feet deeper but would you notice if you only see what he's doing on that day. I you know not necessarily like outfield sir. Pretty big so it might be hard to tell depending on where you are and as you said. You're you're pretty much never gonna be able to tell that on tv. And it's not easily tractor quantified. I guess distance from home plate is but it's not as glaringly obvious as people playing like on a totally different side of the field from where they have traditionally stood so it it sort of escaped our notice a little bit and yet seems like it might matter even more. So that's pretty fascinating. And i think you can see the the roots of it like there have been some isolated cases where teams have sorta let slip that. This was what they were thinking like. I remember in twenty sixteen when the cubs had that incredible defensive season part of that was that they had moved dexter fowler back significantly in the outfield and that was like an analytics driven decision and joe maddon said to get guys. A little deeper is probably the right thing to do. Keep the extra base hit out of it and permit the single now when the bulb loops in front of you. In the latter part of the game and the run-scorers everybody goes nuts percentage wise. It's probably better to play these guys deeper. And i think that fowler's defensive metrics improved and there is a a case where i think he helped save a jake arrieta no hitter because he was playing deepen and that might have helped him get through a ball so speaking about the the no hitters. You know one play can make the difference. So that was one case. I recall and then the following year with the orioles and adam jones. He backed way up all of a sudden and he said at the time. The number guys are smarter than the players. It's weird playing a little deeper. But that's the way our front office wants me to play. I'm not subordinate. I will do what they ask and sacrifices areas. That's what they see in the data. That almost sounds sarcastic. If he's like. I don't know if he was entirely earnest about that. But that was what they were telling him to do. And i guess it seemed to make a difference and that's also pretty intriguing to me. The idea that like for all of baseball history may be outfielders. Were playing too shallow. Pretty interesting with the shift Yeah like you would think it would have been more intuitive like stand where the ball is going to go but at least you had sort of at least after a certain amount of time. You kind of had the understanding okay. I'm on the side of second pace in that side of second base and so you were like really breaking boundary if you crossed over whereas backing up the seem like that big a deal. I mean you probably remember like in little league. When a big hitter was up everyone said okay. Backup rates so it's not really like that revolutionary seemingly so the idea that like the best players in the world were standing too shallow on the whole and that they were costing their teams runs and hits over the course of hundreds of years. That's pretty amazing. And i guess it's kind of like maybe the the risk aversion i don't know of like not wanting to be too deep and to have balls falling in front of you all the time and maybe you're worried that that will be more common. It'll make you look bad like the bowel frozen front of you people think that's anew whereas if it goes over your head well that was hit hard and people are more likely to think. It wasn't playable and less likely to blame. You is just kind of amazing to me that something like that which you would think might have been something that you could kind of intuit apparently wasn't and now everyone has Been taught the better way to it. Apparently this makes me think that we need you. Know we have this proliferation of available broadcasts and you you get a lot. There are a lot more camera angles than we see on the broadcast right. That are available to us. And i think we need like a trend. We need trend. Cam that is just from the press box view and gives you the whole field sort of like the all twenty two and football so that if you decide that what you wanna do is spend an entire game just watching outfield positioning that you have the ability to do that so that we can peak at this stuff. Because i think you're right. It's really hard on a traditional broadcast. They understandably are concerned with infield action. Because that's where the pitcher in the hitter are and the only time you ever really see outfielders. Moving around is when like the bench. Coach is doing big hands to to tell the guy move and then he's looking at his car and he's like i m move because a big hands on the car and then you you see him move but often that's laterally rather than sort of front to back so yeah we need. We need lab league and we need trend cam. These are my solutions to baseball. This how i solve it. Do you get when the chiron shows the positioning of the infielders. Sometimes it should like either. It flashes it or maybe even shows it permanently do you. You're capping that they're sure. Yeah i guess like it doesn't bother me. I'm not i don't find it destructive to my viewing experience. An can be kind of informative to see where guys are playing. Because sometimes if it's a team you watch less often you may be don't have an intuitive feel for who everyone is zoomed out view rate. So it's useful to to have it confirmed that. Oh yeah that's where the shortstop really is playing you know. The third baseman released that deep. So yeah i like it. I think it's fine. Do people not like that. I i like it. Yes behind to do with the outfield freya cast..

"They're not going anywhere. I'm not sure they're going to finish in last. But i think the mets are winning this division by at least five or six games so philadelphia katrina. I home my guy what i love. They traded actress. I am so tired of watching. After narrates agent at the end of the year is apparently he hit. Looks like he'll qualify with the six years of service time. So that's a good call up all right. That's enough of the closer stuff because we talked about allergies razz on every show. Let's take a look now at your forecaster which we should remind people. And i don't do it enough because it's the best piece of content at espn fantasy. Fantasy forecaster is updated every single day. We're starting pitchers hitting matchups all that good stuff and not just on fridays. It used to be fridays now. It's every single day if you wanna look at next. You're going away this weekend. Yeah let's go away this weekend off during the forecaster russ ready for next week. I can look at the forecast right now and no next starting pitchers because rain does not affect them at all. Doesn't trista no. I appreciate it thank you. It's this this. Is the thing. Been doing the longest as far as a writer. And i love. I just love projecting out hitting pitching matchups Tend to match at the next ten days. And i'll tell you this past week has been interesting a lot of changes and i'm going to have a piece coming up in the next week to ten days or so about forecasting ahead pitching workloads on what i'm experiencing with the forecasters so keep an eye out for that. We'll talk next week about that. Maybe maybe even talk about whether next week all right. Yeah you get the memo all right. So taiwan walkers going tonight sandiego never gives up home. Runs against you doris. That's a pretty good match up there are. We had to present buying on walker. Where do you where do you rank walker. I don't look at your rank is anymore. But he's got to be top forty by now right. yeah walker. I think was forty eight. When i did the final draft of it And there were a good number of pictures. I liked in that top forty tier. That's the only reason he squeezes way in there. But yeah like you're saying he could make the case for all right so i'll be watching now in tonight. Espn plus has boston. Houston a day game. Martine perez z. Maybe who elliot's hernandez you like him right at pittsburgh got it like that matchup. I'd do and of all the match. You're gonna to drop a pitcher into in his activation start first for the year off the injured list. That's the one because a pitch cap doubting doesn't really hurt you. When you're pitching in pittsburgh and that extremely friendly pitchers part hernandez had some adjustments during spring training. Wrote about it so you could go google at find it if you want. I do think he's worth a certainly worth and add by the way home. Colorado is next. That's another great matchup. Great matchup anthony desclafani. If he pitches poorly tonight against the cubs. then people will drop him yet. I have no idea whether good or bad. But i'm just saying that's an important outing for him. But if you could just well texas. After that and adam wainwright added where. It's one of my favorites. I gotta tell you can hit. I love the thing with him. In yachting marina yup forever. But he's he's good now. Yeah yeah g. is good and alexis in fantasy. He pays attention to us. These are good guys. Friday day games a native all the at night. I oh boston yankee series. I have to assume. That's the sunday night game without looking Looks atlanta pushed the an anderson. Back day he'll face holy orders that that's an interesting match up with potential playoff. They played in the playoffs before in anderson. I think i'm on the enersen. He's got control strikes people out. But it's the dodgers that scares me. They scored eleven last night in the first inning. So yup what do you do there. do you use anderson. And it's an extra day rest has to help it does. And they do that. Typically with him. I think that's going to continue. So the innings kaffir for the year is going to be a little bit limited for this matchup. One granted home game. I like that good. Stop shown decent command impressed me in that department. I'll give him a go. I'm hesitant but i'll give him a go there. Well we got some overrated pitchers from my recent blog on friday night. Dallas go overrated. Jake arrieta rated frankie month us. You know the word john snow. I didn't even bother to put him in the article. Because everybody knows Montana colorado so nobody's going there anyway but i'll tell you what you should. You should not be using montage anyway. His career you take away the one good half season before the is five twenty career. What are we looking at here. This is an example. It's like lakes now. We overrate pitchers based on one. Good season ariana. We did that for years. Montage fell in the. Who's that marlins the rigging alaska class of metrics that look better than the true potential. So i think there was. "Hello and welcome tap so one hundred twenty three thirty eight postmark. Paulie has always joined by bryson. And jacob is a lot better Day to be talking about the blue jays and it was last time we recorded absolutely it was so we had the opening game. A little rain. Delay the second game 'cause which caused doubleheader yesterday and we finally saw the debut from yours truly allocate and. That was the obviously highlighted of yesterday. Despite the second loss of the doubleheader a lot of people a lot of good takeaways from the series alone on jay's end up winning the series anyway to three against the yankees we also like considering. They came back from a being swept by the raise. Losing his series to the red sox. It's it's it's good to gain ground on the al east and thankfully i mean they're done with the east for a little bit but you know it's good to get some ground on while you could especially considering that the standings will start to solidify going into the summer months. Yeah this is a point where it starts to a you know you can actually start to read into what the standings sakes before you know. It's it's like two months into the season. You know forty fifty games. It doesn't really matter but at this point it starts to get you know where you can start to actually read read into what it says. So let's talk about alec. Minoa is obviously that was very exciting. Six innings pitched to hits zero runs to walk seven strikeouts. We all saw the emotion of his family. Visiting at yankee stadium seeing him. Strike out the yankees lineup. It was pretty incredible The thing i am most grateful from this start is the fact that a was a seven inning doubleheader and be the bluejays barely user bullpen at all all day so they had the off day built-in with the postponed game on wednesday and then going into thursday they only use one inning of jordan romano in game one and then one point one innings of aj coal in game too. So that's the thing. I'm most thankful of from this thankful to robbie. Ray thankful dalek granola for even though the fact that they lost the second game they didn't stretchable and which we know was a huge talking point in our last episode alec manila robbie ray. They were great Well i mean robbie ray had a bit of a tougher outing but if you can If you can get that many innings out of a starter and especially considering a two innings to cover that's perfect I think alec minoa. I want to talk about him he. He was very impressive. He didn't start off the greatest i think. He walked his first batter but then he struck out. He ended up striking out seven over six innings to walks northern runs. As you just said he. But the thing that i found most impressive was his actual stuff. And i'm gonna go out and say when i saw his fastball. It almost reminded me of jake arrieta back when he was with the cubs because that thing was moving all over the place to the point where it it honestly looked like a slider or some other type of pitch and i think that was extremely impressive. You didn't see a lot of jitters from alec minoa now i was watching very hesitantly. Because i jokingly put a thousand dollar bet that he would get a no hitter and that was kind of happening for a bit of time but I was very very impressed by him..

You're a pitcher. you're part of the game. You should hit period. They get to the. Da leagues right. I mean they go through the minor leagues. The pitchers are part of the batting. Were wary shaking your anymore. No they take that now college. We be high school. Yeah oh wow okay. So that's news to me. It depends on the league. Which is girl were sleeping. Yeah and i seem pitchers who can hit. I mean know a great example. Jake arrieta you know he ll right. Yeah there are pitchers who can hit. What's his name on the cincinnati reds. Oh my god Michael something i think. His name l. lorenza. Lebron yeah thank you michael and michael lorenzen lorenzen. Wright guy can play everywhere. I'm looking at autonomy. You know. But i just feel like the pitchers part of the game. Yeah he pitches every five days so he's only going to get that but i see him in the batting cages. I seem pitchers get home. Runs that i love when pitchers get runs. It's so fun you know but then you know back to with brands argument. You know again. Look at shorter when you know when he came back from his injury he got that advantage of being the d. h. He didn't have to feel. And but when they played at wrigley so game one game two he was a hitter and he you know he made a difference and then when they got to wrigley he had to sit because they wouldn't let him field so let's he came in as a pinch or so. But then you see you know. The pitchers trying to to leg out. So they don't get double the often they get injured. And kyle hendricks tripped over first base during spring training. And this why we need a d. age. Unlike unlike the thing you know you gotta tease. Who's not a d. age. And he just tori shoulder so i feel like the injury can happen whether you're you're pitcher. Not in. if you're a pitcher you should be conditioned to be able to run from home to first without tearing leg. Yeah no. I guess what i'm i. I'm probably on the same side as break. I liked it last year. Just for that shortened season. But i don't know if i'd ever want it and it made sense and that's again two to one you lose thank you bye. Thanks for coming on a great question. Yeah we love it so thanks. Thanks later by this. Yeah who's who's next. I think we got a couple of people up next right next up. We have tim sergeant. Right yeah okay. Here goes edge alot. Been.
