"Not jumping off the eyes or plan by any means right now. But I think this was kind of the first time that we've seen him with Detroit try to build this team back up. And I do think the results are a little bit mixed, but obviously we'll see what he does in the next couple of years because I think we're still a decent ways away from this team actually being a properly competitive team in the Atlantic. Certainly, I guess the difference between them, I get to the point where you're making about the crack and they do have the young stars, I guess, in terms of black and then Raymond and the cider already in place where they're not bringing in Jaden Schwartz and hoping he's their best player. If Andrew cop is just a serviceable second center or second line winger for them. It might be a bit of an overpay here, but it'll clearly improve what they already have. But it's interesting to kind of parallel that to what the ducks did where I guess behind them in terms of their readiness to take this leap in terms of trying to be at least relevant. In next season standings. But they pretty much didn't do anything today. I was expecting it to be very active. They brought in Frank patron over three years at 3.65, but they've got all this valuable real estate in the top 6 beside Troy Terry and Trevor zegras. And DOM, I believe, last I checked, they've got about 14 million left just to hit the cap floor. So I'm really curious to see whether they're just going to kind of scoop up some of these guys like strom and whoever else on short term deals and overpay them just to get that a cap floor or whether they're going to try to go the trade route and absorb some of these desperate teams were up against the cap and take their bad contracts for sweeteners. Like we saw them do that in padre beach for his trade headline, especially with the Guinea did not off. It would have been nice if they would have been able to complete that and get an extra second for him, but the process was obviously very promising that they were already thinking that way. So maybe they're going to go that route. But it's interesting to kind of compare that and that level of activity compared to what Detroit did. Yeah. To me, I think the two teams are sort of in a different headspace Detroit has been rebuilding for what feels like a Turner now. And I don't think you want to create a culture of losing where the team doesn't try to make any meaningful moves towards actually going for it.

"Yes and no. I think people underrate how many players on the crack and actually played those roles already. Played top line minutes for the islanders. Yanni gourd was the highest used forward for the Tampa Bay lightning during the playoffs last year playing shot down minutes. He is more than capable. Jaden Schwartz was definitely up there. There's definitely gonna be guys where you're making assumptions based on time and ice. I think Jerry McCann is one of those because he played top 6 minutes briefly last year for Pittsburgh and crushed it, but he still didn't get a huge bucket of ice time and you can't really project him to score at a top 6 level playing in that role. So I do get it, but there are some players that have played that level that I think Seattle should be fine. One of the things I do with my model is regress players based on their role. So some of the column Blackwell, if he was playing 11 minutes per game last year or whatever, he would be regressed towards other 11 minute players and not towards the mean. So that should theoretically handle that issue. But there are some players that can still break the models a bit if they're just so much better and have done that for a longer time, sort of like McCann, who over the last two years has been really strong in a lower role for Pittsburgh. Well, I wish we had robbed here because he would be able to answer this as a football guy. But I know, I listen to a lot of football podcasts and they talk all the time about how the stickiness of metrics from one year to the next in terms of how well they transfer over or how well we can project them. And I know that in football, team defense is not very sticky at all in terms of it's very volatile for one year to the next and just banking on that is precarious. And I wonder how do you feel about that in hockey because obviously, I think we'd all agree that our ability to accurately evaluate defense is still very up in the air in terms of especially like individual contributions..

"A great guy. You're a veteran. i it's just getting old. You get hurt. I don't know how coskun in is still in the league You know they have arguably well not arguing. I was gonna say arguably the two best players in the nhl but there's no argument that connor mcdavid is the best player in the nhl. Then there's leon seidel number two or number three in the national hockey league but a terrific tandem can't do it enough. There are so many holes. There i know they picked up some pieces. That they think will be championship caliber. You know the zakheim hymens of the world's correct you know here's a guy. He was on my fantasy team last year. Of course he was with toronto. I loved him. But i mean this is real life emily. I can't live in a fantasy world. But i get disappointed. All the time with the oilers. So if there's a team that can knock them off and don't sleep on seattle like that. There was sleepless in seattle but never sleep on seattle. My thoughts on the oilers are exactly the same as yours. I don't understand why they didn't get a goaltender. I just don't like it's now practice as gm to me. Zakheim is a guy like great. You have him. And he's gonna add a ton of value playing alongside mcdavid. Yes played with austin matthews. But like that doesn't address the deaf down your lineup which has been the issue all along. It's not can we find someone to play next mcdavid. Wait find people to play behind mcdavid. Do you think that was a pretty good pickup. It really do amaral too. I mean let's talk about donkey guy. You know really well. So i wanted to tap into your brain about duncan keith. What's he got left as he still hungry he is. He's really hungry. He wants to play until he's like fifty he is like like brady obsessed with his body does infrared at home. I'll kind of weird stuff. Who but he's super competitive and are you super competitive though and i think it told on him to be in chicago last couple years losing and i do think that he kinda that veteran leader. Who's been there one before that the old hockey men do believe you need to win. But it's true. Sometimes we'll talk him. Do know right in some ways. And i do think you need that kind of veteran leader back there and for those who are laughing. Maybe you're laughing at me. Emily secretly about. I'm saying the crack and could win the pacific division like sixteen to one odds to win the western conference. I mean another preseason means absolutely zero. But what i've seen so foreign. I'm anxious looking forward to covering them. Obviously vegas opens up with them. At home against seattle on october twelfth on espn some afforded seeing them up close and personal but when you have that terrific goaltending tandem like philip grew chris trigger. That's half the battle okay. Pushy got those big burly defenseman or at least five. You've got a handful of big burly defenseman with leadership qualities marchiano. Donna is one of my favorite favorite players. Just gets it. Great leader you know. Obviously former captain with calgary flames. You know all of that. So i am not really counting out the practice. I'm not going to be surprised if they shake things up in the pacific division because it's a winnable division with you. I don't think it'd be a shock to make the plasma only question this team is who's going to score the owl's yeah so much strengthened their defense and i feel like this is one of those teams kinda like the national predators last year. We're like a defenseman. Romeo's your case leads them in points. Whether it's like vince. Don mark gear donahue just running the point and the power play so as long as they get enough offensive. Contributions like yes. Jaden schwartz and naturally. We'll get like really forty goalscorers or consistent point you know producers in this league maybe not on their own. So i'm a little worried for them on offense just the depth there but from the back end especially in goalie. There's deep is anyone and i'm with you. I think they can be a playoff. Yeah and then. There's like vancouver. You know. I mean very disappointing year last year for the thought thatcher dem cult took a bit of a step back. You know different things went on there. And they're you know as we speak. patterson went. They're always something going on marriage just like that. Just attracts chaos and drama. Yeah i just. It's really a shame and it's such a passionate fan base. Some of them are a little nutty by the way in vancouver. But it's a beautiful city as we know but you know. I just think i am afraid to parole my money at the center of the table where the vancouver cannot saw that. They're actually going to bounce back. Big enough yeah. They could get one of these playoff spots in the pacific division. There's no question about it. If the seattle take doesn't make it you know as a top three in the pacific division or edmonton for. Some reason suffers a horrific injury. Is somebody that you know. I won't even mentioned it. Because i'm not putting anything like that out in the universe i still believe in the edmonton oilers by the way. I think it's good for hockey but I you know. I know they still have got oliver edmund lawson kinda girl into now in vancouver got stars and of course you got once these guys sign are get extended join us and all that they should make the postseason they should grab one of those wildcards in the west. But if i'm vancouver canucks i'm really gunning forget the wild card you have to deal with another division you must. You must get one of these. Postseason bursts got finished in the top three. Yeah for me. The season goes is allies. Pederson goes it really does last year before the season i predicted it was like dark horseback that he was going to be. Mvp just because he was on that traja day and he didn't have a great season at all It just wasn't up to his standards. It didn't look like a star player this year. I'm looking again for him to be a superstar and if he is and he can make everyone around him better..

"I figured that they would be playing teams. That aren't in canada. And have you forgotten. Because i have not how talented this team is. And they could have gotten father in the postseason you know obviously they pulled off the biggest upset shocking edmonton in the first round of the postseason Last year the way they did it. I was stunned. I was shocked They still have mark shy fleet. That was the big thing. Mir would shy fli You know he is the key to everything for me. The winnipeg jets but the nikolai healers. They got blake wheeler. Well it kyle. Connor was one of the best scores in the national hockey league. I think a lot of people are sleeping on the winnipeg jets and if there is a team that can knock off colorado and win the central division. They get my vote. I think there's an urgency. There you know capital you really urgency. When it comes to the winnipeg jets. They have that core group. The bill to win. They want to win. They have connor hell about has to stay healthy but i think there are You know i think. Don't sleep on the winnipeg jets. I'm in nearby. There's like unsexy est team to talk about probably because of their market. I'm not gonna lie. It's the punchline. Nhl jokes really. Is you know what is what it is. I think the shame because there's so many great players specifically great american players that we just don't get to appreciate down here for me it starts with connor. Jala buck i believe full. Stop his second. Best goal in the league behind. Andre bass celeski amazing Yes this team is a much tougher division this year but they've got the deaths to keep up with these guys in the central division. You know. I think they're very excited about a full season of pierre. Dubois was kind of a rocky start after they made that big trade for him But with the forward depth that they have with some of the defense they over also overhauled their defense which was a big weakness for them last year. And i do think the defense will be better in. Yeah i see a playoff team But i also see a team that just has a propensity to go through long bad stretches for whatever reason yeah. I'm glad you brought up a defense. Excellent point right now. they're top four is is some of the best top four in the entire national hockey league. They picked up dylan brennan dylan of course and snake schmidt born to lead. I love nature. He is a winnipeg jet right now and he joins like neil peon co i love of course former ranger and josh morrissey so those top four after that you know it's throw it up in the air see what happens. Bought the top four really strong. So i think winnipeg is moving in the right direction and they wanna get back to seriously becoming and being that stanley cup contender once again. Yeah okay here's a team. That i dislike always struggle talk about the saint louis blues. What do you think of. What what do you think the blues You know what sadly Because i think both of us love rhino riley They're taking a step back. I i mean they have some losses their first of all let. Let's start with your. I'm not going to be you. Debbie downer here either. Let's start with positives. They picked up Boots navy all right. While i wasn't a superfan of pablo bucci navy niches. a member of the new york rangers. He doesn't within days. And if you could put the puck on his stick he will score They also got him for nothing. That's right and because again i was not a perfect pablo david. And there's a reason why they gotta promise nothing but he will add to. This team as will brandon saad. Of course he is a member of the team as well. But no vince done. Okay on now. A seattle cracking right. No sammy blais. No jaden schwartz. Who's a good core group guy in that dressing room. No my kaufman and their goal tending. I mean jordan bennington. I love his fire. I love his passion but he left a lot to be desired. In fact he left the lada goals in the last year so he must return to form on. But you don't want emily. I really do feel the saint. Louis bruiser in danger of missing postseason. Even though they have vladimir tarasenko with something to prove. okay. I get it. And even though they have ryan oreilly but they again. It will be tough sledding. At times they will go into some deep slumps. We're going to see if they can pull themselves out of it and then got to get the goaltender yet. No no doubt about it You know there's a new look on offense right. And if i think if i'd take two for to you lose hoffman towards you game which never and brennan thaad. Even i think you know maybe brandon. Saad never just something a little bit different. You know the defense used to be such a strength of the team when they were in that stanley cup final when they won the stanley cup. And it's not that alex tranquillo left and went to dust. But kind of the turnaround was and you know. I do think that they could have some bounceback performances. But i just don't have trust in that defense. I wanna trust jordan bennington. But i just don't like you You know they're old. They're a bit boring i. There's not much for me to get excited about. Yeah and that defense. Pledge brought their top. Three i mean they have tori crude reichel. Parade goes still there of course and Justin faulk So but after those three guys the lock all right. Let's talk about the nashville predators. What do you think of when. I say national predators. I think of the past. I think of when they were smashed. Fill yes smash ville. 2017 went to a stanley cup. Final all was right. In the world of country. Music and broadway in nashville one of the greatest spots in the world to have fun. Bought.

"It was it was fun. I think they're gonna have a huge financial impact on the league this year. You think like i do that. It's vegas and seven other teams in the west and will kind of see where this all works in the pacific division. So i shut it to make predictions but i think they're gonna have a huge financial impact on the league. Yeah my only question about seattle is. Who's gonna score the goals like defense sher- the goaltending sure who's scorned goals on this. Low morgan geeky obvious. Apparently it's going to be the mortgage geeky show and listen You know everybody's feeding pass their players you looking here and say okay if mccain has a career year if you know donskoy who've seen go super cold but also go super hot can have year if alexander van berg can finally figure it out in turn it around you know jaden schwartz can pop it set for this team. It's almost like vegas right. And a lot of ways for this team to be successful in year one is a lot of forwards at half the have career years. You're right like how many teams are going to score in that division. I think the same score score. Vancouver's listened to vancouver has got three scoring lines. Now while the gotta get those two guys in right once those two guys two guys. I think that vancouver's gonna scoring vancouver's and improved team. I think los angeles has the potential to score we know edmonton is gonna fill the net anaheim. I think was the second lowest scoring team in the nhl ass season. Calgary didn't bring in anyone that's going to pop the offense at all. We know gonna be a lot of to win games. Yup at the saddledome can't see the san jose sharks so there's a couple they do like three. Maybe four teams that. I can see scoring in that device. It the same way. Vegas gonna score edmondson's score. I'm with you once everybody's signing in place i think vancouver's gonna score anaheim's not calgary's not so my question is what are la and san. Jose going to be i think. La can score. I think la can score goals. I think they can. But we'll see so i see this as a division where as darryl sutter says. It's a three two league. You're going to have a lot of three. Two games and seattle could win those. I think whoever wins those. Whoever in that division wins three two games is going to be in the playoffs. Already though you mentioned the financial impact of the seattle cracking you can't keep you. Can't you can't keep the merchandise in the shops out of a pandemic that is not insignificant. I've heard that they believe they're going to be pretty close to pre pandemic levels. I'm not sure the full season which was five point zero nine billion. But i think they're optimistic and i think seattle's very big part of that too breeding could check. I haven't heard as much on the weekend. I think ottawa here has kind of gotten i heard this short term deals like they weren't even close the two sides they did discuss short term. And i just heard it didn't go very well. I'm always wary of saying this stuff because one phone call could change anything. I can do this. But i heard that the long term like i said. I don't think they were that far and overall dollars but were they were disagreeing was on bonus structure potentially trade protection. And you know. Ottawa knows that they're going to have a big deal for students. Lay here at some point. I think they want to hold it down. Eugene melnyk remember a couple years ago. He made that crack about the lease and how they blew their salary cap. I think he's sitting there saying there's a limit to what we can do. But we'll see i was going to say how much of this If you're brady trucks cam if you're gonna commit long-term to the ottawa senators you wanna know what they are spending their money on and how much they're going to spend. I do believe that has come up in conversation is chalk. Wants to know what the long term i like. I think one of the reasons that dj smith got an extension first of all dj. Smith's a really good coach. I think we all feel that way. He's a really good coach for that team. But i think brady chuck made very clearly. Legs likes dj smith and auto like okay. We're not fooling around with this. We agree in. Let's get it done. But i do think that's come up is what's auto we're going to do and ottawa's saying look where we have. Some other stations are going to have to do here. And i do believe this is all part of the conversation. Okay so you mentioned. Travis hammond a couple of seconds ago. And maybe there's some thought that perhaps he may decide to opt out of this season. The new jersey devils have an unknown unvaccinated player as well Described as someone substantial to the lineup. I wanna say this vote. Corey mass athletic. He wrote that story as carefully as anyone could ever write it true. If i ever had to write that story. I would want to write it that way. And i can't speak to your corey's reasons for naming or not naming the player. I don't like to speak for other people aside for myself. But i just wanted to say that the tack he took it. I thought it was extremely well done. So what happens here. Is this another potential opco. Is this no. I don't i don't think so. You know one of the things that i have heard is that there wasn't appointment scheduled at at one point but the player you know just know decided. He wasn't ready or comfortable at that point in time. You know. i don't know where it's going to go like i had some people tell me that in edmonton ken holland did an unbelievable job. He had three players pretty.

"A the vegas is players as well. So i don't know maybe he's worth that. Money cog lianoing coma. Were doing that and they're not getting paid that much i think that's an overpayment from la. Am i crazy over five goals right and he got five point five million dollars just for being a good defensive player. More than a million dollars gold. That's a lot really that's crazy. That's ridiculous in my speaking of like. But that's that's kind of what you get for the canadian for not resigning him earlier. Like if you sign extension last season he's gonna make three and a half so when you guys go to the market people pay that or whatever after an amazing playoff round like he had so speaking of overpayments boy am. I glad we didn't go after this guy. Blake coleman twenty nine years old. He obviously he leaves tampa bay because tampa bay can't afford them because they're still over the cap in. He goes to calgary where he signs a six year deal worth twenty nine point four million dollars at an average of four point nine per million per season for that price. I'm like boy. You go right on. There is no way at all that blake coleman would be signing for that much in in dallas. There's there's not a chance. Jim no sign that yeah. I'm sure that he called blake kalman and then didn't call him back so i can imagine. Yeah yeah that's crazy. I was thinking three and a half maybe right even that was pushing it in my mind but yep agreed a crazy. Offseason years is what is what all this is. That's that's crazy. That's all i can say. I mean here's another one that we already knew about but jaden schwartz. He goes to seattle. He leaves saint louis five and a half million per year for five years. Twenty seven point five million dollars over that period of time. Maybe a bit of an overpayment for seattle but seattle doesn't care they have all the cap space in the world right and that was done on purpose. Yeah that's not. What i like schwartz too. I think he's a good player. He's a good guy to at least be pushing in the top six he will be in the top six in seattle. Be even on the first one. I think he played it on the first in line with with every there honestly but in most other organizations you wouldn't but for seattle. They just don't have i line guys right now so you'll take that i think it's fine contract. Here's one that really perplexes.

"Burns logan could sure is on a real sweet deal. They're really interesting team. And a tough team really to get a read on the. You have a read on the san jose sharks. They plug some holes. They wanted to plug. They wanted a third line center. And benino is a perfect fit i think. They wanted some positivity around their group and be does a pretty positive guy too. He's got a really good reputation as a teammate and cognitive does as well so i think that helps. The in thing is really interesting. I do think they want to give him a chance to show you know. Can he take job. Can he be the guy and rymer gives them a little bit of flexibility there. Just somebody with a bit more of a pedigree case. Anything goes sideways. But i do think that they really do want to say to hill. We'd like to see what you can do with this. San jose's kind of a mixed identity place right. Now you know. I'd heard some rumblings about t- mo meyer in new jersey. Those were flatly denied to me. You know someone said you're you're way off and don't go down that road so i'm not but i do think that doug wilson is trying things like before you know before they bought out martin jones i think he tried to trade him with some retention right so i don't think he's done trying extricate himself from things and obviously whatever happens with vander keen. We'll see where that goes to the seattle cracking. And i don't think anyone thinks that they are done by any stretch of the imagination They have cap space. They have a lot of defensemen Their defense looks good though still need a number one center and does it seem like and maybe this just opened the doors for that vantage deal to go back to washington. Philip grew our sort of landed in their laps. Six years five point nine million av colorado was only willing to go a certain place i think it was five times five or five times. Five point two five and then seattle came right in and beat them to it. It was a bit of a surprise. You know word started leaking out of what an hour before it happened that they were going hard at him but it was still a little bit of a surprise that seattle would do that. Because one of the things that seattle talked-about wise they weren't crazy about term and they bent it. In a couple of cases they benefit for alexia. Act they bended for jaden schwartz and they bended for group bauer but other than that they really tried to keep it tight near the one thing i think about the cracking is there's gonna be no easy games against them this year They've put together a roster. That's going to beat you up is physically going to wear you down. Comet you hard. I agree with you. They still need to number one center. And i wonder a little bit how much they're gonna score but i think they're going to defend really well and you know that when you go to the Cracking house that. You're going to get some bruises that davila. I'm really curious to see how people handicap that division. That's going to be a really interesting division next year. The pacific is gonna be vegas some would say edmonson some might be inclined to saving hoover. Who will talk about here in a second and a whole bunch of question marks up you might even just say vegas and then a bunch of question marks which will offend everybody edmonton. I get that. Let's get to vancouver Much improving kubrick squad. We talked a lot about Alva rex tillerson and connor garland throw jason dickinson into that mix and tucker pullman and ura slava halack and getting rid of bloated contracts albeit ones that were set to expire anyhow but still and all of a sudden and i know that the pederson in the point hughes the oser still out there. And we'll talk about that in a second but when you look at the lineup elliott even just with a couple of editions. Doesn't everything seemed to fit nicer. And if you're travis green are you now finally looking at your roster and saying we've got three lines can score here. I think right now. If you're travis green you're happier with your group on paper. I would definitely agree with that. I will say this. I think one of the more eyebrow raising contracts was pullman. I think that one caught some people by surprise. But i'm prepared to see you know what the cannot see here there deeper. These should be better. I still think you're looking at pederson hughes and waiting to see why they signed for before you truly stand the full piece of the puzzle. I do agree with you that this team should be better and the other thing that they did which i thought was really interesting was they really went hard to make abbotsford a contender. So they've got a lot of players there who are good h. l. plus nhl depth players and their close. You know you don't have to worry about getting them across the continent things like that. If you ever get a situation where you've got a ton of injuries. Those guys are generally closer to home now and there are a lot of guys who can play in spots at the nhl level. So i kind of liked all that. I'm just waiting to see. Once they get pederson hughes signed. This is not a travis green problem. Because you'll have them on his roster but white their caps situation is going to look like any idea what the holdup could be on these two deals. I know we're still seven weeks away. But i think there's a couple of things number one you know. You can't really sign them long-term right because you don't have the room to do it. But i think the other thing is in hughes case in particular now his situation's a little different because he's not eligible for an offer sheet but look at what happened to d- contracts are. We just talked about her with l nurse. And we're going to talk about it. More as we get into seth jones dougie hamilton later. Exactly so. I'm sure that that has hilma car. Hang what am i about. Kill makarios the obvious one. What are you doing merrick. That's the obvious. One that changes the equation around hughes. So we'll see bite. Like i like a lot of the debt signings. They made i. I like liu shan brady keeper. I like brady keeper there. You like keeper. I'm really curious to see pod kohl's in. I have a personal rooting interest in jack rathbone. I like his story. And i wanted to do well. You know i thought jason dickinson was a good pickup. I thought it was a really good pickup for them. He paused on dickinson. How many times did you hear when people came knocking on dallas's door the player they were trying to steal was jason dickinson. Yeah that was definitely the case for a while. There's no question about that but we talked about last week at the big one. Eckermann larsen if he finds his form. It's huge for the. I like a lot of what they did. Around the edges of their roster. But i'm just curious to see like the whole hughes patterson situation what cap machinations do. They have to do to get this all or not. Do to get this all sorted out okay. We'll finish off the pacific conversation. We're talking about vegas. And there's a couple of names that are dominating headlines there neither of which are members of the vegas golden knights. Marc andre fleury. And jack michael. Now they did bring in nolan. Patrick yevgeny dad. Off laurent soi. Who comes into backup robin leaner. But what's the conversation around vegas from your point of view. And why is the answer. Jack local. Oh i think i thought bringing back. Martinez was big for them to email..

"Hey if you're a kid out there you should play every sport until you know for sure that you're going in that gulf direction and that advice. Yeah i was standing there with harrison. Baiter and i said boy does that make a lot of sense in. He was like absolutely does harrison was there was a lot of. Vip's that were at this event and it was just cool. It was just. It was neat to see Whether it was dignitaries in politics or ceo's or harrison badir but people that were there that were in awe of watching greatness and they were hanging on every word man so it was. It was really cool. It was a neat thing. I think lewis can planted slag as a place to come on a kick ass golf tournament. All that and put whether it's gymnastics or the winter classic or whatever man if you want to be well received and you want to have an attentive sports fan base than than come to your event here And hopefully that word is is spreading and certainly seems to be engulf. I've got a shameless plug Sunday night ten. Thirty on the scoops. Tv show on fox channel to nolan. Gorman will be my guest john. we'll be my guest and pat hughes longtime voice of the cubs. He has baseball voices. He does these compilations of Any edits him rights him finds all this historic Calls and whatnot of great baseball voices. He'll be my guest on sunday. So nolan gorman pat hughes j k coming up on sunday. I always ask you what he working on for the post-dispatch this weekend this is perfect so i wanted to ask you if i'm off on this. I put on my conspiracy hat this week. When i saw jaden schwartz signed that contract with seattle like you know happy trails to jay schwartz. Awesome guys So important to the blues winning the cup and great player. You know one of the most hard nose guys blues have had and everybody loves them and you love to see him get a good deal. However did you kind of take do a double take at the way. This works with the expansion. Seattle gets to take vince. Done in the expansion draft after having an exclusive window to negotiate with schwartz and the other free agents and if they would have signed schwartz before the expansion draft in that exclusive exclusive window than they would have not been able to take done but they didn't sign shorts. they apparently got really really close to signing schwartz. They take down in the expansion going two for one on this and then they take and then they and then they just so happen to finish up that that negotiation schwartz and get both of them like what. I'm just a little confused. And i know. I know the league had to sweeten the pot so the expansion teams because for too long they were too bad and clearly. You know i'm wondering if they get a little too much now. Like vegas doesn't have a team. They don't have to lose a player in the expansion draft because there are one of the newer teams. Didn't it's the cup final in their first year. It never missed a playoff. Why the hell couldn't vegas give up a player in the expansion jet. I think they might have overcorrected this thing a little bit. So i wrote about that for. I wrote about that for the patriots at stltoday.com and i'm just curious if you're with not as youth you followed hockey a long time. What the blues kinda got the raw end of the deal here. Why would say so because of the two. I hate seeing vince dongo. I'm a big big vince. Done guy and if you knew the direction they were going to go you would have made that one player available in the draft.

"And it's not close. No question Let's go to the blues brandon. Saad is into the fold. Pavel buchnevich is also in the fold for the blues and doug armstrong boy. He doesn't wait he. He's gotta jump in and and it looks like he's got a couple of good guys that are much needed help up front. We'll see how it plays out. We'll see what army has left to. He doesn't sit around a way. He's gotta figure out what to do with lad but i think these two guys helped the help the blues. I'm both maybe a little under the radar because they're not names that that might be as as familiar with as some of the desired players that are that are out there. Some of the big trade targets or some of the biggest free agents but which he would have been second on the team in goals last season Behind ryan o'reilly very kind of very complete forward and and and check the big box. There and saad saad does all the things that that you look at you know really jaden schwartz. In as prime did the hard on pucks the kind of the greedy grimy things that he really takes pride in the blues. I think we're kind of missing some last year and And he's going to bring an element of that to it. So i know blues fans might not know much about these guys but i think they're going to be pretty good fits for the way. This team wants to play. And now we'll see what what army has left the big of course being what to do with live near care cinco look the blues. Put him out there..

"They've got a lot of defensemen but i don't. I don't see a big deal coming there. Okay they signed jaden schwartz. They signed alexander van berg. They've got yanni gord. Could they make a deal for another forward. I think that's possible. Could it be with some of the draft casts pa- capital. Maybe i just don't think you're gonna see them. Got out that defense that they just draft. The might move one of them. But i you know. I don't see that larson or alexi. Aker daniel Those three in particular. I don't see them moving anywhere. We're going to wrap up season two right here right now. It feels just started right like every week. You know we've had a lot of things. How just started rea- now i think we're ending on a high. Yeah but it doesn't feel like it just started. I was just kinda as being cute. I guess you're right. It doesn't feel like it feels like we've been on vacation and grinding it out for thirty three episodes. However we've got some exciting news and we've kind of hinted at in previous episodes and that's the special summer alumnis series that we're going to roll out in the weeks ahead just to make sure that those who follow us on the platforms on youtube and whatever no rain dregs isn't going anywhere you and i are going on a bit of a hiatus he much bud we got some pods taped during the campaign Some hall of famers. yeah great. great guys That i've had the opportunity to play with some of these guys really good people so That's gonna roll through the summer. Yep we're in a record down on friday. We gotta get him to talk about the fight right. Aw i'll tell ya. I almost not in that fight with your face yes he ah let him tell the story but halfway through that fight i realized that only one of us in that fight knew what they were doing. We will get stumped to tell the story. So you're gonna wanna tune into that and ran a personal load. I wanna thank you for a tremendous year. You know we first started the podcast. We just do that. We want to talk hockey right. Tell some stories. Get some good guests analyze some of the bigger stories around the league and I feel like we do that. My job is easy. Just kind of lobbying it out there. bringing some inside information whenever i can do it because you're the best in the business and I haven't done a good enough job getting on your skin. So that's a little bit of a goal really going in to season two three to steal the duffy that tsn format of. What's bugging. ray. I feel like i gotta i gotta figure that out but you've been great to work with in saint to banks youtube dregs. I think we've had to really great years. I i love the way the podcast is grown and changed and we talked about some important stuff. And we've talked about a lot of silly stuff We love to get to the game and talk about the trades and the teams and players. And whatever the information is you dig up that i react to I hope that people have enjoyed it and season three will grow in a different way and considerably. More were were excited for it. "Just kind of have this pack mentality about it. Yeah i mean i. I'm looking at it right now. Definitely there not. There's nobody that where you look at. You go oh my god how to how this guy slipped through free agency. You know like the first day of free agency. But like i don't know. Can you get ryan murray for less than three years. Three million dollars is a much better men than derek forward. Just yeah. you're not right. Shot i guess but You know you. He's a good. He's a good player Sammy vaatainen is a player. I think that we all agree have has some lower end of the lineup value. You know again. Nobody's calling these guys can. Have you seen anything quite like the connects defensive depth shot on the right side where it seems like right. Now it's tyler myers travis. Avonex tucker pullman in luke shanna guests. I think madison bowie might also still be there about sheriff as a free agent. Yeah it's i. It's not making me timmy. Friends in conduct land right. Now i can tell you the truth. I i i mean honestly you know i guess a good gauge of how much it seems like the attitude towards cat space and contracts has changed in the course of seemingly two weeks. Is you know if you If you look down this list of contracts how many of them if they pass through waivers on january twelfth twenty twenty one would have been claimed. You know i think there's a double then that would be. I think there's quite a few of them that wouldn't be. You know there were there. Were good players all season long. Who were on contracts that just so happen. You know that it was two years. Instead of one year three years instead of two years it was three million instead of two million and there were passenger waivers seemingly on a weekly basis and then suddenly it seems like you know. I don't know if if the owners jams got all excited because they started. Espn logo in the corner of the screen for the first time but suddenly it seemed like the pursestrings were open and every team i guess just completely reverted to a you know i guess. In retrospect probably what they were dying to do last for which is get back to normal and and start giving out seven hundred seventy million dollars much of it as usual gonna get regretted. I think that is certainly true art. I'm going to give you guys my. Take away the seattle cracking. Yeah so i have to admit. I've spent a large chunk of the past week trying to come up with potential theories Talking to as many people as i can elite trying to sort of piece together what the vision and plan was here and sort of the sequence of events that led to all the decisions seattle's made in terms of personnel. They've acquired in various ways so far. What their vision was for this roster year one and i was hoping you know leading the expansion draft which the three of us talked about at length on podcasts. We are kinda came to a agreement that it made sense that they valued cap space in flexibility as much as they did. They didn't wanna take on anyone else's bad contracts really for the most part and we figured that either via some sort of trades down the road they would acquire assets for the future or maybe disgruntled players or players that other teams just couldn't afford anymore or they were going to go big game hunting agency with either dougie hamilton. Or gabriel landau scott or whoever else and they were going to really bolster their team. Which would have actually made sense. I think normally you'd say building through. Free agency is an ideal but just based on the personnel. They'd acquired in the expansion draft. They had this interesting complimentary group of low event defensive players and if you added a couples of linchpin offensive threats could really make them an interesting team especially in the pacific division and i guess technically like they certainly spent Here in day one. They got some interesting pieces depending on your mileage on them. But i can't. I can't reasonably say. It was an optimal use of their bill resources. And it doesn't make me feel doesn't do anything to make me feel more confident in what their plan is moving forward because it feels like something weird happened in the meantime and they sort of have to readjust because this couldn't have been their number one game plan heading into it. It just seems so bizarre case. The thing that i don't understand is they. You know i. I think sensibly kinda went cheap on goalies in the expansion draft. They they got a check and they got a treasure and one other. I'm forgetting to corey exam. So they send him up and down. Yes and li- joy to You know his track record even before he got pro. Hockey is is solid and and so it was like okay. they have waco of. They're getting their ducks in a row in the crease. And then they were like what if we gave a twenty nine year old six years and and almost six million dollars and then traded a one of the goalies redrafted back to the team that gave him up. What have we did that. And what if we let gavin beyreuther the only guy we took from the guy we took from columbus. What did we let him just sign with columbus. After all this like what was the point then would like just. I don't know say pass. We're good we're not gonna take these guys you know it's kind of belaboring the point a little bit but like when you go all man look at how much cam space they have. They could go hog wild they could. They could offer sheet Allies patterson they could they could offer sheet Any any number of guys and then they were like yeah. We're going to give jaden schwartz five and a half million dollars in leg. I don't have anything against any of these players that i'm about to say but going to give alexander number four and a half million dollars are gonna give jamie alexia. Four and a half. We're going to give adam larsson. Four were And then i said group are already. It's like oh okay so you're just gonna spend money like a normal gm that feels like they're like for you know quote unquote going for it Okay because you know the thing. The thing i and i wrote about again i wrote about this. Like a whatever Right before the expansion draft. But i think i said you know they. There's no pressure on them to be like actually good because their division stinks right. Les they could. We set it last week. They totally back into the third place in the pacific with the roster. They they had at the end of the expansion. We like you know that was totally a reasonable expectation and they said what if we barely improved but spent twenty million dollars to do it. It's a plan. yeah it none of it made any sense to me at all i was. I was blown away when that alex winberg contract came through. I mean you know you gotta remember like winberg is a guy who got bought out of a contract that was essentially just this contract like fleet. Last year he was on four point. Nine until twenty twenty three and now he's at four point three until two thousand twenty four and the only difference between then and now is that he shot twenty percent this season. Which as always you know we know is a perfectly good measure of a player's talent.

"One at least it's tyler pit lick. No no sorry sorry. Sorry no trades heading into this draft. Yeah will be trade but after the selection has already been made and we'll find out about that thursday afternoon after one o'clock eastern and pit. Lick is probably calgary. But i think philly's in there too but yeah i mean i am. I think we all thought that there would be some well. First of all francis said the teams were better prepared for at this time. But i'm curious to see where this goes. I'm also still wondering about free agents like i wonder. If there's like the one guy is you know. I've been on for a week now. Jaden schwartz. i think seattle really had interest in yup and they had a pretty serious negotiation with them. I wonder if that's still turns up to be the case down the road. We'll see but i was surprised. There weren't more trades. We'll see does that see i. I was surprised that it and i have two questions about it. One is that a reflection of how general managers felt coming off vegas expansion where they were much more aligned with. Just take the player that you want. We're not making any more deals. We already handed you a stanley cup finalist. Once we're not gonna do it twice or has you mentioned the first and the third prices just too high. While i think there's probably a combination of both but also if you don't think you can make trades you can't walk yourself into a cap problem if you look at some of the expansion selections there are guys who are not going to get you into cap trouble coal in from vancouver for example alexander true. He's not gonna get you into a cat problem. From san jose gavin beyreuther from columbus nathan bastion from new jersey carson. Our ski philly had a lot of guys that could get you into trouble carson torrance kitty. No vantage from the capitals. I think a really good pick. But they stayed away from dylan and scholtz for example. So that's what i think it was. Some of those picks were about to is. If we can't make deals make sure we don't lock ourselves into a problem. Well that's an interesting point that we should get to hear. It seemed as if listen ron francis. Talked a lot about having cap flexibility. And even though he's been given the green light to let the salary cap act as a magnet and suck as much money upwards as possible. You know fifty two point. Six million dollars is what these players today cost at twenty nine million dollars in cap space remaining this all according to cap friendly. This is ron francis. True to his word is not yes it is. We cannot column aligarh and that leads me to wonder what still could happen in. Free agency Mentioned schwartz you know what else could be there. You know where they're really thin. Is there thin at center they are. You know renault reported tonight. That yanni gourd is going to be out for the start of the season know. I'm not convinced about this. Giordano deal but i do think. They've talked to the rangers about strong. I do think that's a guy they've talked about. Does that mean filipino. Or something like that. Are they thinking about offer sheets. I mean i doubt it but you never know. I think it's going to be interesting that they've got a lot of room to do a lot of things and that's the position that really stood out for me is center of all the positions. I think they're thin at. It's that one We've talked with us being the goofiest and perhaps richest free agent situation The nhl is seen in quite some time in the off season. If you're gonna hit into a summer like this whether you're an expansion team or not you want to have the most salary cap space possible Like did you look at these pictures. And say i guess you're sort of already winking at this. You know what let's get this over with. Let's make this as as painless as possible from a salary cap point of view and then let's go shopping and there's two big names out there. We can go shopping to try to get in our basket. Having looked at all the players that got picked. It seemed as if that was a deliberate strategy. No question i like their d. yup de looks good. I actually don't mind their goaltending. If they're all staying. You know the one thing about the cord. That's really interesting waiver exempt. So they've got some flexibility there in their third position I like that. Pick by the way you and i talked about this last year. The beginning this season someone the organization to the beginning of the year said. Don't be surprised the if If ultimately joey accords the best goaltender in the ottawa senators organization. And they.

"jaden schwartz" Discussed on 31 Thoughts: The Podcast

"Of thirty. One thousand podcast. Thanks so much for joining us today. Lots happening I shouldn't happen. Lots being talked about elliott and will stick with a couple of canadian teams. Here right now and we'll We'll start with the maple leafs. I'm of the mind that this is probably going to be a six times six deal. What's happening with zach hyman right now. Well he's got the permission to talk to all these other teams right and you know what i think happened again. Nobody direct like none of the direct sources will talk about it. But the best i can piece together is like i think toronto wanted to keep them and i think he wanted to stay. I agree with you. I think there's a six times six or maybe seven times six out there potentially for him. We'll see where this goes. I think what toronto tried to do. And this is kind of gas and educated. Guess was they tried to. Max hermit to bring down the av And i just think it's too far from where highlands potentially going to go here. You know. I think it's like a lot of players i think there's a willingness to leave something on the table. I i just think the gap was too big of what potentially is out there. What they suspect is out there. And what toronto could do so. Even though i think toronto tried to mac term it. I just i don't think they were. They were able to get close. See that surprises me. The idea the toronto would would max term this thing and again i understand this is this is your educated speculation but you know we just mentioned the avalanche and being an analytics driven organization and so is toronto and the same aging curves that exists in colorado exist in toronto with the maple leafs as well. And here's a player. Who plays an aggressive rough brand of hockey which can to injuries. And he's twenty nine years old and that type of commitment on term to a player where you know. The history of these types of players aren't flattering for those types of contracts. I don't disagree with you. Jeff but i think what that may have shown was just how much toronto felt about this particular player. And the other thing you can always do is try to make it so that you know it's easier by audible at the end of the deal ever. I guess it just showed. How much toronto thought about hyman that. They really tried to find a way and i just unfortunately don't think it ever got close. You know the The other speculation that edmonson. There's a number of teams would be interested. Edmonson was one of the first ones that popped up and my first thought. Was you know what type of good did zach. Hyman do in her previous life to be able to play with austin matthews and maybe connor mcdavid early andrei cycle in this life. Do we know if there is still interest from edmonton edmonton's one of the teams in there. You know. I know there were some reports in vancouver. That knocks are there too. I just like to talk about the quick sec number one. I do think the contracts are looking for that kind of player. I think they have some interest in in in jaden schwartz. I don't think they're the only ones you know. There's going to be a few other teams looking at schwartz. Like i wonder. For example of landis gog leaves if colorado goes there maybe. La goes there. He goes back to saint. Louis i mean those are all possibilities for him but the other thing about vancouver i i wanted to mention wherever some brock besser rumblings. Yeah on thursday. This is what i think was going on with brock besser. I do think his name came up. But i don't think it's because vancouver's got him on the market. I really think that it was vancouver. Going after something they really wanted or needed and besser name came up as the price that it was going to cost them. And i really believe that if besser was getting move this year it was purely because of a deal where vancouver got something and we would say. Okay now we kind of understand why this happened. I don't think his name is being thrown out there. I think it was specific to a certain kind of trade. So i don't think it's a general besser available. Let me stick with vancouver here for one second. What's going to happen with nate schmidt here. I think they're going to to trade him. They are trying to move him. I think everybody knows. I hope said. There's no nate schmidt's situation. And i guess it's all semantics. Maybe there is no situation. But i think there's an understanding that You know he'd like to play elsewhere. And i think they're going to try to accommodate them but they could have a lot of holes on their blue line. They're they're trying to sign. Adler i don't know how deeply they've gone with hammock yet. There is a chance he comes back and ends up back there. But i do think they're trying to find him a new home. Let me get back to toronto. then We just talked about Zach hyman the goaltending situation. We've talked about a plenty jack. Campbell is the goaltender under contract. He will be a maple leaf next season question. Mark about frederik anderson question mark about number three. Who's out there on another team right now. What are your spidey senses. Tell you about the goaltending in toronto. It's a great question. I think the goaltender market's gonna be really interesting. You know with the montreal situation now. Where they're they're gonna leave weber unprotected in there. They're gonna lose. Jake allen you don't think they can do a deal to get ron francis to stay hands off. I hear it's expensive man. He don't someone told me who had been a position to know that the The ask and this may all changes. The deadline approaches. That the ask for staying hands off of a player as a first and a third. I've heard it's been very very high. That's very very high. That's very high very very high and that kind of fits but i. I haven't heard that you know the goalie. Market's going to be going to be fascinating. Someone told me that you know this new dell covid thing is really interesting you know. Carolina has indicated that they think what he could win in our is too high and you know some people wonder if it's appear negotiating tactic but other people tell me. They think they're serious that they'll only go to a certain point with the delicate and and then they might move on any maple leaf wise. Well i should talk about. The goal is because i keep on losing my train of thought right like this is not your fault. This is my fault like my flee like attention span. I keep getting distracted by something shiny. The name of this podcast cats and laser pointers go really is so true. Goalie wise everybody thinks seattle is taking dreger from florida and signing him. Now will that happen. I don't know but people are expecting it. So what other goaltenders. Now i think seattle is interested in whole be but not at the number. I think they want to see if they can get vancouver to retain something or try something there and then seattle's undoubtedly going to take a couple of goalies to see if they can flip them because if it's dreger we'll see what happens. Withhold be and montreal things. It's going to be allen and all of a sudden. Where else could we be going with this. Didn't we all think. I thought that anton khudobin was going to be one of those guys but then big ben bishop goes out in agreed to waive his no trade right. There's another one bishop. Mike smith isn't signed yet and edmonton..
